Ash - character study

We are doing a new project called ‘write what you know’ which means writing a film about something that has happened to you or around you. Mine is about why people don’t report things straight away as this is something I see complained about a lot with #metoo

Ash is the main character ~17, and based on me. She lived with her dad who emotionally and sexually abused her, and then moved in with her mum when she was ~16.

Personality

Are they more optimistic or pessimistic? Pessimistic - considers herself a realist, prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

Are they introverted or extroverted? Introverted - was great at making friends as a kid but really struggles to since living with her dad.

What bad habits do they have? She keeps things to herself far too much - she wasn’t allowed to talk to her dad as he would make it about himself and so, despite not living with him anymore, she still internalises until she can’t anymore

What makes them laugh out loud? Shitty puns

How do they display affection? Giving gifts - listening to what they like and giving things related to this

How do they want to be seen by others? Smart (was always told she was smart so doesn’t want to seem dim)

How do they see themselves? An idiot, weak, a bad person. Then she moves. Smart, funny, kind, brave, creative/inventive

How are they seen by others? Funny, kind, smart, gentle

How competitive are they? Competitive with themselves, doesn’t care so much about competing with others but hates when she does something worse than she has before.

Do they make snap judgments or take time to consider? Indecisive but once set on a plan, she will do it to the max.

How do they react to praise? Struggles to, not used to it

How do they react to criticism? Also struggles as not used to it. Never really praised or crisitised, just sort of blends in

What is their greatest fear? Wasps. Being abandoned.

What are their biggest secrets? The abuse

What is their philosophy of life? Fuck it, might as well try.

When was the last time they cried? A wasp landed on her while she was on a hike and she had a panic attack

What haunts them? Her dad. she is starting to see him on the streets and in her dreams.

What are their political views? Prioritising people's safety and well-being over the economy

What will they stand up for? Equality, environment, women's rights, sexual assault

What quality do they most value in a friend? Honest / real

If they could change one thing about themselves, what would it be? Their past, though she wouldn’t actually change it. Or make themselves more confident

What is their obsession? gardening

What are their pet peeves?

What are their idiosyncrasies? Autistic. Stampy feet flappy hands.

Friends and Family

Is their family big or small? Who does it consist of? Small - Taylor (sibling), mum and dad. Lots of extended family but she has moved too much to bond with them.

What is their perception of family? Used to hate her mum but now appreciates her. Loves Taylor but weird sister relationship as they didn’t grow up together

Do they have siblings? Older or younger? Taylor, 3 years older.

Describe their best friend. Does not have any - struggles to bond with people long term

Describe their other friends. Mainly extroverted people that talk for her.

Past and Future

Did they grow up rich or poor? Not obviously poor (she wasn’t aware of it) but far from rich. Under the poverty line a few times but didn’t go to food banks

Did they grow up nurtured or neglected? Felt nurturing but was rather emotionally abusive

What is the most offensive thing they ever said? ‘I would like to live with mum/dad��

What was their first kiss like? Awkward school dare - she’s not that into dating but did hook up with someone while in a depressive episode to avoid thinking

What is the worst thing they did to someone they loved? ‘Basically everything ever’

What are their ambitions? To help others get through what she did. set up her own music label

What advice would they give their younger self? Say no clearer

What was their childhood ambition? Be a musician

What is their best childhood memory? Camping at Tolpuddle music festival and the way the musicians interacted with the audience.

What is their worst childhood memory? The dad experience

Did they have an imaginary childhood friend? No. She would talk to her blanket though.

Love

Do they believe in love at first sight? No. She is aro/ace, she thinks

Are they in a relationship? No.

How do they behave in a relationship? She has only been in one proper relationship and this was a depressed escapism one - she was sleeping with her as a distraction from her life but wasn’t sexually or romantically attracted to her. she was nice to her but was mainly there for the sex - though she is terrified of insulting people so was still respectful and kind

Has your character ever been in love? No

Have they ever had their heart broken? By her family, yes

Conflict

How do they respond to a threat? Disassociating - she struggles to speak and is very slow. She also stims a lot which leads to rubbing her skin raw and has many scars because of this.

Are they most likely to fight with their fists or their tongue? Neither but her tongue if really having to.

What is your character’s kryptonite? Loud people/sounds

If your character could only save one thing from their burning house, what would it be? Her blanket that she has had since she was born

How do they perceive strangers? No one is trusted until they do something big

What do they love to hate? Sound design

What are their phobias? Wasps

What living person do they most despise? Certain political leaders and CEO’s that are fucking up the plannet

Have they ever been bullied or teased? No - they aren’t really noticed at all. Taylor used to tease her constantly though - mean, even for a sister, but they are far better together now.

Where do they go when they’re angry? To her garden plot. She has one away from the house.

Who are their enemies and why? She doesn’t pay attention to anyone enough to hate them that much.

Work, Education and Hobbies

Do they have a job? Yes

What is their current job? Editing music videos for a band that she knows from secondary

What do they think about their current job? She likes doing it but hates that she could mix the songs better than them - they wont let her change anything though

What are some of their past jobs? They worked at the sweet shop round the corner for a few months before she moved in with her mum.

What are their hobbies? Mixing, baking, minecraft, gardening

Educational background? 7+ (the new uk grading system) in all subjects at secondary. Working on a music and media course at college - predicted distinctions.

Intelligence level? Very smart but struggles understanding basic things often

Do they have a natural talent for something? Baking but she doesn’t enjoy it so doesn’t do it often.

Do they play a sport? Are they any good? Swimming - she’s good enough to not drown but mainly enjoys just floating around

What is their socioeconomic status? Working class. Her mum is slightly more well off (upper working) but both parents kept their money troubles to themselves.

What is on their bedside table? (Kubrick was obsessed with bedside tables, he thought they spoke the truth about an individual). Three books: one on music theory, Percy Jackson but she’s barely got through it, and one on gardening. A bedside lamp. A mug. Her glasses. A spray. A hat. Sweet wrappers. A pen and pencil. Her journal, open.

What is in their bin? A years worth of receipts after she finally emptied her wallet. Seed packets. Tissues.

What is in their purse or wallet? Lots of receipts and business cards. A few bank cards. Lots of change but no notes.

What is in their pockets? Her phone and earplugs. Her jacket pockets are stuffed: rocks and shells she likes, seed packets, tissues, gloves, various bits of rubbish she has picked up, pens, a tiny notebook

What is their most treasured possession? Her hardrive

Spirituality

Do they believe in the afterlife? She hopes is doesn’t exist - the idea of still being alive after you die is horrifying

What are their religious views? She was into all the spiritual wiccan things at one point but fell out of it during her last depression spell. She still uses crystals and tarot cards though.

What do they think heaven is? Heaven is in the moments of bliss

What do they think hell is? The world we are currently living in

Are they superstitious? She thinks other things are out there and around us but she isn’t scared of that. She likes to leave apples outside for the ghosts and fae

How would they like to die? Either by her own hand (again, depressed) or drowning. Old age would also be nice.

What is their zodiac sign? Taurus

Values

What do they think is the worst thing that can be done to a person? Not listen to them

When did they last lie? ‘No, its fine’ - when asked if they wanted to talk about what he did

What’s their view of lying? Lying is bad, it’s just really confusing. That being said, she is okay with it when you are doing so to protect yourself

When did they last make a promise? They don’t make promises

Daily life

What are their eating habits? They won’t eat things if they are in the wrong order. Eating is boring so she wont do it unless she is actually hungry. She has lots of ‘bad’ foods - tomatoes (puree is okay), cucumber, bananas, mushrooms, dates, oranges (orange juice is okay). Fizzy drinks. ARFID

Do they have any allergies? no

Are they minimalist or a clutter hoarder? Hoarder. Everything looks like a mess but it all has a reason for being where it is.

What do they do first thing on a weekday morning? Clean teeth, shower, water, food, pack bag, get dressed, clean teeth, check the lights and plugs, college.

What do they do on a Sunday afternoon? Edit and then do some gardening

What do they do on a Friday night? Make pizza and play minecraft and drink

What is the soft drink of choice? She doesn’t like fizzy drinks. She will have ribeena

What is their alcoholic drink of choice? Blackberry liquor that her mum makes for social drinking. She has a habit of getting very drunk with vodka and smoking to dull her mind

Miscellaneous

Who is their hero? Elton John

What or who would your character dress up as for Halloween? She doesn’t celebrate halloween and instead tries to do Samhain rituals.

Are they comfortable with technology? Yes but she does tape over her camera and is always using a vpn

If they could call one person for help, who would it be? Taylor

What is their greatest regret? That they didn’t say no enough. Thinks about the butterfly effect constantly though so wouldn’t change anything in her past if she could.

What would they do if they won the lottery? Split the money between her, her sister, her mum and a little tiny bit for her dad so he doesn’t hate her. She would set up her own music label and get a farm but almost the rest of it will be for setting up charities/donating. She wants one charity for helping victims of abuse, another to go to an orphanage, and then to alazhiemers and autism charities.

What is their favourite fairytale? Snow white and rose red

Do they believe in happy endings? No

What is their idea of perfect happiness? Sat on her farm, her music playing softly in the background, many cats and goats and chickens, and a bowl of soup.

If your character could travel through time, where would they go? They would stay right where they are. Although, she would quite like to tell the guy that came up with autism to not be a sexist twat.

What sport do they excel at? They are weirdly good at golf but don’t like it as it is such an unnecessary use of green space

What sport do they suck at? Frisby

If they could have a superpower, what would they choose? Invisibility or the power to change chances

My first IT fic and it’s finally reddie! Terrible pun but please go review! I’m going to be posting more IT related stuff on my AOA account. I have a couple ideas in mind. Send me prompts! I’ll write about any of the losers!

Title: Forever

Summary: Eddie reveals to Richie he's leaving Derry. Takes place after IT Chapter 1.

"My mom's selling the house".

It had came rather abruptly and for once, the loudmouth Richie Tozier was too stunned to speak. He turned to look over at Eddie, who was looking away from him. Maybe he had misheard his best friend. Eddie had his scarf so tightly round his neck, it was covering his mouth. He looked like the little brother from A Christmas Story. Perhaps Richie had just misheard him.

"I'm sorry did I hear you correctly? Your mother is selling your house?" Richie asked when he was finally able to find his voice. Eddie nodded, refusing to look at him.

Richie should have known something was up since earlier that morning. Eddie had been oddly quiet, not quite himself. It was the first week back since winter break. February had been a harsh winter for Derry. This past weekend had brought a lot of snow. It was Thursday and the pair were doing what they had always done, walked home from school together. Usually, they would have taken their bikes but that was hard to do in the winter. It was easier, and safer, to walk in the snow. Lucky for them, the sidewalks were neatly paved. Though it hadn't been that way on Monday. Derry high school didn't close for shit and Richie had spent the whole walk listening to Eddie freak out about how they were going to get frostbite. Though he had played off being annoyed, he secretly liked Eddie's little rants. God, for once he wished it was still Monday.

"Fuck," Richie muttered, before getting louder, "Fucking christ this sucks the rot Eds! First Bev, now you" He kicked angrily at a rock that was in their pathway, watching as it sunk into the snow, "Maybe no one will take it," he added quickly. His mind coming up with a million reasons on why and how this move was not going to happen, "I mean, who in their right mind would move to this shit-hole anyway".

At first, Eddie didn't say anything. He didn't even object to his hated nickname. But then Eddie had stopped walking, which in turn caused Richie too as well. Eddie looked nervous, his eyes darting everywhere except at Richie, "She already sold it," he mumbled softly, twiddling with the zipper on his jacket, "We leave for New York right after school ends..."

Richie was dumbfounded, "Are you fucking serious?! That's only like...four months from now". This was all happening way to fast. He had been to Eddie's house nearly everyday the past few months. Not once did he see a for sale sign or any other indication that Sonia had been trying to sell, "I guess property value goes up when the child eating clown gets killed! Who the fuck knew!" It had been several months since the defeat of Pennywise and nearly as long since they lost Beverly to Portland. The once seven members would soon be down to five.

Eddie had always knew his future laid outside Derry. After all the shit he had been through in Derry, he knew he couldn't stay here for the rest of his life. It was being separated from his friends that was going to be the hard part. He thought he had three years till they would all go off to college. Now he would have to start high school all over again at a new school... with no friends. Eddie shook his head, "She sold it pretty quickly. I didn't know until she had already done it".

"I can't believe we had to spend our last summer together nearly getting eaten by that shape shifting fuckface," Richie said angrily, "What's so great about New York anyway?"

The smaller boy was looking a little green, "My mom's sister lives there. She's got cancer and mom wants to be closer to her. We're the only family she's got," Eddie sighed, "Plus what had happened this summer".

Sonia Kaspbrak had always disliked his friends, that was abundantly clear. After his arm accident on Neibolt, she had sworn that he would never be allowed around them. Hell, if she had had it her way, he probably would have never left the house unless it was to pick up his medicine. Oddly enough it had been Gretta who had freed him from his mother's lies. After he confronted his mother about his medication, it had been a whirlwind. The night he had returned after the defeat of Pennywise had been particularly rough. Unsurprisingly, she had freaked out when he had come home covered in filth and shit. After he had taken a shower and convinced his mother he was physically alright, they had continued their talk from earlier that day. She had once again denied making up his illnesses and was quick to blame his friends for his problems. Eddie had been firm. It took a lot of convincing, and mild threats that he'd never speak to her again, for her to back down. Their relationship was far from perfect, but he had hoped this would set them in the right direction. Although, there was no convincing his mother to at least hold out till he graduated. The house was sold. There was no going back now.

"And the others? Do they know?"

Eddie shook his head, "No. I-I want to but..." he was shaking a little now. His left hand was deep in his coat pocket, digging, "I was thinking maybe tomorrow bu-but,"

Richie stared at the inhaler which Eddie had removed from his pocket. He frowned, "I thought you got rid of that thing," Richie grabbed it, much to Eddie's protest. He shook it and sprayed, holding it out of Eddie's reach, "Gazebos remember?"

"Yeah I know just..." and Eddie continued in his attempt to grab the inhaler, "Stop you're wasting it!"

"You don't need this stuff," Richie said firmly. He had stopped spraying but still help it above Eddie's head, "Not anymore,"

The inhaler had sat on the nightstand in his room since the day they defeated Pennywise. Eddie hadn't thought he would ever need to use it, not since the confrontation with his mother. The day she had revealed they would be moving, he had felt drawn to use it. He had lasted about a week, before he had slipped it on his coat early this morning. It had sat there all day. As soon as he had announced the move, he could feel it weighing down in his pocket. Eddie knew Richie was right. He didn't need it. But there was still a part of him missed the comfort the inhaler once gave him. He stopped reaching, "Fine I wont use it,". Richie didn't look to convinced, "I wont", he insisted again, "Just give it back. Please". At first, Eddie wasn't sure Richie would. But after a beat, Richie had capped it and placed it in Eddie's open hand.

"Fine," Richie said shortly. He watched as Eddie hesitated, before it was slipped back in his coat.

They continued to walk for another two blocks. Neither of them spoke until they had reached Eddie's house. There was no car in the driveway indicating Sonia was still at work. The two stood in silence, as if waiting for the other to speak first. The person ended up being Eddie. He was shifting back and forth in his spot, his bottom lip quivering, "Remember what Stan asked in the club house awhile back?" he began, once again refusing to meet Richie's eyes, "He asked if we'd all remain friends....if we'd still remember each other"

"No way I could forget that ugly mug of yours".

Eddie's eye twitched, but he once again ignored the jest, "We'll still be friends right?"

Forget the losers? Forget Eddie? Richie wasn't sure it was possible to forget them. They weren't just his friends, they were family. The thought of losing touch with any of them was scary to Richie. And he could tell Eddie had similar feelings. But after all they had been through, they were worth fighting for. Richie had to believe their friendship could withstand distance.

"Forever," Richie said, trying to sound as confident as he could. Eddie nodded but the worried look on his face stayed the same. Richie gripped Eddie's arm, "I mean it Eddie. Derry, New York, wherever. You'll never be able to get rid of me," he said teasingly. He let go of Eddie's arm before adding, "No way I'm letting any of you guys go," and for a moment, Richie could feel a twinge of pain on his hand where Bill had sliced it.

"Forever," Eddie echoed back.

Richie could see Eddie was relaxing a bit. He nodded "We'll make sure to do everything," he promised. As he gazed at Eddie's house, he felt a bit uneasy. The thought that by this time next year, some other people would be living there crossed his mind. He pushed those thoughts away, putting on his best smile, "We'll see ever movie the Aladdin has to offer, the arcade, sleepovers with the other guys, panty raids, finally getting someone to touch your dick beside your right ha-"

"Bee-beep, asshole," Eddie interrupted, shoving Richie lightly. He tried to sound annoyed but Richie could tell he was trying not to smile.

"I'm serious spaghetti man! Make me a list of all the stuff you wanna do and we'll do it," Richie was already coming up with a million other ideas, "And...and I can visit New York,". Fuck his parents better let him. Even if he had to do extra chores all year. Hell, he'd hitchhike to New York if he'd have to. Although, he'd probably have more of a problem convincing Eddie's mom.

For the first time of the afternoon, Eddie smiled, "Thanks Richie,". He then made to turn towards the path that led to his house. But suddenly, Eddie stopped himself. He turned back, slamming his body into Richie's and wrapping his arms tightly around him. The hug had took him by surprise, though definitely not unwanted, causing Richie to fumble back a few steps. Then sudden warmth had brought a tint of red to his cheeks and caused his glasses to began to fog up. When he got his bearings, Richie returned the hug. After what seemed like forever, Eddie finally pulled away and headed up to the house.

Before Eddie made it inside, Richie called out to him, "Give your mom a kiss for me!"

He watched as his friend paused at the door. Not bothering to turn around, Eddie slipped Richie the finger. Richie laughed and watched as Eddie went inside.

Fear of Dogs, Dog Nicknames, and Doglike Tendencies

Carlos has an obvious fear of dogs. For him his Cynophobia goes well beyond the words his mother said to him to make him fear them.

Carlos’ fear is ingrained in him. There are very very few dogs on the Isle, partially because of Cruella’s obsession with furs. The few dogs on the Isle are also associated with “evil” and aren’t the nicest. Carlos has had exactly one interaction with them, and he peed his pants, he was only 5 give him a break. But this interaction, when he reiterated it to his mother, is what started that conditioning to fear dogs. It was something Cruella used to keep a hold on him, and it worked, it worked so much he almost did not go to Auradon because of his fear of dogs.

Carlos’ first interaction with Dude is one of the most terrifying things he does in Auradon. Carlos hid it very well, but petting Dude was huge. The entire time he held Dude he was tense. He half felt like the dog knew who his mother was. Dogs tend to sense that, especially with Carlos. Cruella’s legend and story are passed around the canine world. So he was terrified Dude would attack him especially after Ben left. Dude had licked him and Carlos knowing nothing about Dogs, was pretty sure the dog was tasting him.

Carlos didn’t hold him for long when Ben left. In fact he essentially dropped the dog, and he and Dude had a stare down. Carlos then carefully left and Dude followed him which only added to his anxiety.

Eventually Carlos got used to Dude. It wasn’t overnight, and the dog only started sleeping in his and Jay’s dorm when coronation was upon them. Other small dogs were okay at a distance. Dude was the only dog he trusted so he carried Dude around because at some point it became a bit like a safety blanket.

However Carlos cannot handle big dogs, or dogs that bark alot. There are days where he can’t even handle Dude. Even into the time frame of Descendants 2, he just gets hit with a bunch of emotions that he can’t handle. His mom’s voice in his head is extra loud, every thing is too much and Dude becomes something he fears, and something he doesn’t want to get hurt because he struggles to not obey his mom’s voice.

It takes Carlos a few years to get used to dogs of all sizes. And even then it is a very very rocky road. He gets used to them, and really used to them when he goes to college, when he meets the Radcliffes, and gets his service dog Laurie, a dalmatian.

dog nicknames

First things first, Carlos is allowed to refer to himself in that manner (look I found a use for the dumpster fire that is book 4) because his chat name is in fact C-Dog. Carlos is okay with three people calling him Pup, the go to, or any dog related thing other than Pet. Those three people are Jay, Evie, and Mal. Those are the only people who have either express permission from Carlos to call him that, or Carlos has never complained about being called that by them (save for the one time with Evie in book 1 when they first met and even then it wasn’t a nickname). The only other person who calls him dog names, and dog related names that he will never put a fight against is his mother. It is canon she referred to him as pet, Evie thought he was a dog after all. Carlos will never correct his mother on this, or ask her to stop. The one exception being my left behind verse, where you can add Uma to the list.

If your muse was not listed above, it is safe to assume that calling him Pup, or Spots, and Dog-Boy, or whatever is not allowed. Carlos will automatically not like you. Carlos is not really a fan of nicknames in general. Carlos is just fine, and C is okay if you know him really well, Los is also permitted. Carlos however will not stop most kids on the Isle from doing it, though they do it in a more mocking tone rather than an actual nick name. He’ll tell them to stop, but it wont do much.

Carlos is so sensitive about the dog nicknames because of his mother. Everything with his mother is a pretty touchy subject. He loves a woman who abhors him, he atones for her wrong doings because he doesn’t think she can, and he truly does care for her in a weird fucked up way. However, when he was little he was treated like a dog, some of those behaviors have stuck with him, for example unless permitted he wont sit in a room, and when allowed he’ll only sit where directed, or he’ll sit on the ground. His go to is sitting on the ground if not told where to sit. With being treated like a dog— a puppy— whatever, came the first of the dog nicknames. Carlos never corrected his mother.

The nicknames are a sensitive subject with him because with the Core 4 they know enough to know what they really mean, no one else does, so calling him by those names is doing more than just putting Carlos in a bad mood, its reminding Carlos that for his entire child hood he wasn’t considered human. Carlos likes his name and would encourage people to call him by it.

doglike behaviors

Carlos has doglike tendencies, the core of these comes form his mother. His mother from the time he could crawl treated him like a puppy. When he could walk on two legs, she did what she could to keep him on all fours, which is when she started to give him chores.

She called him derogatory terms, and put to use much of the dog stuff in her basement. We know she locked him in the crate, I imagine for a while it happened at night, until it got too small for him to actually be able to fit in it. But he was still put in for punishments. She also called him “Pet”.

Because of these instilled and learned dog behaviors they carry over into his normal life. For example he doesn’t sit til told, and if given the option in a non-school setting he wont sit on the furniture. He does his best to not think about why he does things when and why he does them. The small behaviors don’t bug him like being called “Pup,” or “Runt,” or “Dog” does. Granted “Runt” and “Dog” bug him no matter who says it, but Mal. Evie, and Jay are all allowed to call him that without him getting pissed off. Anyone else shouldn’t do it, no matter what, that doesn’t stop the entire Isle from it. He also doesn’t correct people about it, like ever. Evie is least likely to do it because of their conversation from when she realizes that Cruella was referring to Carlos all those years and not an actual dog, and the fact that Carlos says it triggers him (granted I am not a fan of that phrasing in the book but we’ll go with it).

Behaviors that he does WITHOUT realizing:

Growling when angry or adrenaline is rushing (so for this and the one below Carlos does know he growls especially after Jay tells him— however Carlos does not realize when he does it, unlike when he whines and whimpers)

Growling to assert dominance and to protect protect

Tilts his head (you know the thing dogs do, he knows he tilts his head but he does not realize it is a dog behavior)

Run to just get pent up energy out (ie zoomies)

Chew lollipops and suckers instead of licking them like a dog would chew a bone

Play with toilet paper, trying to build things or whatever, picking it apart, but making a mess in the end

Makes a nest out of his bed when sleeping

Doesn’t sit til told

Opts to sit on the ground over furniture

Behaviors that he KNOWS he does:

Whine (whether this be in a form of begging, or not)

Whimper in his sleep (due to nightmares mostly)

Beg

Jump at people who he thinks he has an upper hand on

Cower when corrected

Run to avoid punishment (unless its Cruella)

Carlos’ behaviors are best left not talked about. However that doesn’t stop people from talking about them, especially in Auradon when people notice it. It causes questions as to who his father is, many under the impression that it could possibly an anthropomorphized animal turned human such as King John from Robin Hood’s story. The truth is not so crazy.

Carlos is aware he has dog behaviors he fully accepts that as a fact of life, just as he fully accepts that his life is a pun and he must live with that. That does not mean he necessarily likes them being brought up, even by his best friends. Their are only so many dog jokes a kid can take. He also vehemently denies any of them when they are brought up.

Chika and Riko give advice. Hanamaru receives advice. Does it matter that it isn't what they meant? Progressively shorter, sillier (& inappropriate-er) humorous skits around the idea that Hanamaru's formidable appetite extends to certain boy-related activities (implied only, non-explicit). The title is not missing any punctuation. 1100w.

Somewhat non-PC, but I hope not too offensive (I feel like there is potential for a “don’t date the player, date the game” pun here).

Chika and Riko sat enjoying the sun on the slope overlooking the sports ground, turned so they were almost facing each other. On the grass their shadows where thoroughly tangled, their actual bodies less so. The school administration had strong views on appropriate public conduct. Closeness and a little light petting was easily defensible, since as demonstrated by other groups around them, it was quite common even among platonic friends. As far as Riko was concerned, the thrill of minor rule-breaking just made the occasional stolen kiss that much sweeter.

"Hi guys"

"Hi Hanamaru, whats up?" Chika responded cheerfully.

Their friend sat down on the grass beside them. "You two have dealt with this sort of thing, and I need some advice"

"Sure, what about?"

"You know what people have been saying, about me... and the football team"

At the recent school fair Hanamaru's eating prowess had attracted a certain amount of fascination from the boys at the adjacent school, particularly as she responded to their encouragement. As a result of those events, in addition to a permanent ban on foot-long hot dogs at school events, she had gained certain level of notoriety. This, and her continued association with the boys, had earned her the enmity of a group of the more socially "outgoing" girls, who saw her as stealing their spotlight. Whether or not they counted as truely "mean girls", they certainly weren't above spreading some mean stories.

Chika glanced at Riko uncomfortably. Hanamaru was right, they had plenty of experience with unkind rumours. "Yeah, I think I know the one"

"It's so unfair!" Hanamaru huffed. "I haven't done that, not with any of them! They treat me like a sister, or princess or something" Frustration tinged her voice.

Chika nodded in sympathy, stories like that could be so infuriating, even if nobody really believed them. "You can't control what people think of you"

"I just wish I could change things"

"You could try talking to them" Riko suggested, "Even if they don't change, at least you have let them know how it makes you feel, so it is their problem"

"It is kind of awkward to bring up" Hanamaru sighed and turned to stare down at the sports ground. "Look at them down there, without a care in the world"

Chika followed her gaze and saw that the mean girls were gathered at the edge of the field, ogling the football team as they ran laps. "Kind of shameless" she conceded.

"...Running around getting sweaty in those tight little shorts, I just want to go down there and-" Hanamaru stopped and her face hardened with resolve.

"Er" Chika had seen that hungry look on Hanamaru's face before... generally around baked goods. With a shared look of shock at Riko she started to re-asses the conversation she thought she had been having.

Hanamaru stood up "Just like you said, if I don't say anything, nothing will change" she strode of down the slope.

The couple sat in contemplative silence for a while.

"Don't tell me she really is going down there to talk to the team" Riko smiled nervously.

"Ok, then I wont"

"But she is, isn't she?"

"Maybe she is just going to talk to them on the way to the girls" Chika didn't sound convinced. After thinking for a while, she moved her position so she was almost parallel to her girlfriend "If she uses gestures, I don't want to see" she explained apologetically.

After a while she spoke up again "So is that even a thing, like team-o-sexual?"

"I don't know. I suppose there is polygamy, or polyamory" she saw Chika's puzzled look "Being in a relationship with more than one other person where it might be more complex than just one and many"

"Well, aren't you knowledgable. Do I have to watch you around other girls now?"

"You're all the girl I need" Riko leaned over to deliver a brief but heartfelt kiss.

"Sakurauchi!"

She looked up the hill to see the teacher. "Sorry sensei!", turning back to Chika she mouthed "Worth it", before getting up to receive her lecture.

Yō smiled as Hanamaru entered the store, it added a bit of variety to the evening. Her friend had been doing a lot less Friday night shopping since she had switched to rechargeable batteries. How did one person use that many batteries, anyway? The girl did like gadgets... she imagined a large collection of buzzing oddly shaped and brightly coloured toys. Fans, remote controlled cars, engraving tools, that sort of thing. There was an art to retail, distributing your mental and physical activity evenly though the shift to avoid exhaustion and boredom. There was the entertainment of making guesses about people's plans based on their shopping list, tempered by the fine art of knowing when such speculation should be avoided lest it open doors best left closed.

When Hanamaru came to the counter smiling and humming cheerfully, Yō took one look at the items and carefully, deliberately, shut down the speculative parts of her brain. Two dozen condoms and an X-large bottle of lube. There might be an innocent explanation, but it didn't seem safe to look for it. "My parents are away for the weekend" She explained.

"Um, ok." After a pause, Yō switched on her retail smile, "Will that be all?" she asked brightly.

"Um, hang on" Hanamaru dashed off, returning a moment later with several large bottles of sports drink "Have to stay hydrated, Zura!"

(Bzzzzz... It's the future, Zura!)

The coach scowled at the boys jogging sluggishly around the field. Kids these days! Most of them had skipped weekend practice and they still didn't have any energy.

(Before high school she never thought that she would become a fast woman, but thanks to the Aquors training regime, now only the quickest and wariest boys can escape)

Watching the girl carefully at lunch Riko felt that Hanamaru seemed even more cheerful and bouncy than usual. But then what was she looking for? The target of her surveillance took out a sheet of paper, the boys' school athletic roster, she realised, and started looking over it intently. Like a menu, her watcher worried.

"Yō, swimming builds stamina for other things, right?"

"Sure. Thinking of trying a marathon?"

"Oooh, marathon, good idea!" She picked up a pen and put marks beside a couple of names on the roster.

Riko shared a look with Chika and carefully focused her attention on her food. Maybe it was better not to be sure.

(Hanamaru says: Competing over a girl is a waste of energy, sharing is caring!)

"It is important that foreign exchange students get the opportunity to see and experience a wide range of local cultural activities, so we would appreciate if students from both schools should help to show him the best experiences our country has to offer"

"Oh, I see, C-H-A-S-T-E. English is tricky" Chika looked up from her phone, glancing worriedly at the oval "We should tell her"

"Nah", they jumped, hearing the coach behind them "He could use a few more laps"

A/N: Ok, that last one in really poor taste, but the pun is a classic. Almost didn't publish these because it isn't very PC, but in the end I don't think it turned out too bad. It actually started out as a serious idea about Hanamaru approaching established Chika/Riko couple for advice about initiating things with her oblivious boyfriend... but I got sidetracked. The original idea (or maybe a more serious take on Poly!Hanamaru) might still happen if I ever write a sequel for Girl Friends.

1: Boku No Hero Academia - character develoment? check. Non-neglecting of side characters? check. Bomb af graphics? double check. Loveable best boy? yep yup. Great fandom that collectively hates Mineta? yesh

2: Diamond no Ace - sports anime that actually shows the struggles of different teams? yesss. epic scenes that are so great it could be a meta anime but it still retains the basic functions of baseball? huehue double yes. the mc is such a ball of energy and genuinely wants to be the Ace and has so much development as a character that you honestly start wanting him to get that number? yes yes yes yes yes

3: Nichijou - one of the greatest work anime has produced. really its so effing hilarious and it really pinpoints the things everybody does in everyday life. like flip a police officer for mistakenly confiscating your boys love manga. accidentally stabbing your thumb with a mechanical pencil, the struggles of ordering at Starbucks or even..

4: Magi - a smol baby boy tryna bring peace to the world? check. fucking strong girl that can beat any kind of wild beast there is? heck yeah! magic? yup. loads of backstory that actually makes sense and relates to the arcs? checkity check. villiains that really arent villains and good guys that truly are the bad guys? ho boi yessss. a magical recorder? you got it. also the graphics are great

5: Mob Psycho 100 - another smol baby boy just tryna navigate middle school. blessed with amazing psychic powers but powerless in terms of popularity and friendships. truly such a great anime that teaches a lot of moral stuff and has A M A Z I N G fight scenes. our boy mob is such a freaking god and the art style is very different but so expressive 10/10 would recommend

6: Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou - [Daily Lives of High School Boys] like nichijou, this is another anime that is at the height of comedy gold. every episode is such meme worthy. the main protag really isnt the main protagonist, so many puns, great side characters, and i cant express how much of a feel good anime this is

7: Bakemono no Ko - okay this is a movie. and when i say this is such a fascinating movie, i mean it. this really smol boy gets adopted by a bear after he runs from home. this big bad bear™ is actually so pure and best dad. the uncles are great and so punny i cant. okay, they also have some really epic sword fights.. i really cant explain this movie without giving spoilers lmao but go watch it if you want, you wont regret it

8: Hunter x Hunter - young fisher-boy and young assassin-boy walk into a hunter exam together, who survives? friendship.. and the newly acquired dads they found along the way [honestly go watch it, i was skeptical at first but i never loved anything more in my life] also the arcs are so monumental, really great plot and friendship!!

9: Yuri On Ice!!! - edgy ice skating and gay couples that reaffirm what love is? check. little smol bean yurio tryna act all mighty and tough? yep. amazing soundtrack? heck yeahh! great characters that in no way hate on homosexuals? you got it. amazing graphics? best boys? well dang, you got it!

10: Shokugeki no Soma - food. food. food wars. great scenes that have food giving you orgasms? basically a sports anime but about food? great mc that really deserves all the love he gets. when they tie a bandana on their forehead, shit is about to get started. food. food. food wars.

11: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - as i write this, i cry. this was so good and i was wary of watching it bc there was/is so much hype around it but alas IT WAS SOO GOOD I CANT. like two brothers? amazing morals? the fact that nothing is as it seems? kickass female characters. alchemy. the hype is real with this one, but its so worth it and i 10/10 would lower you down FMA hell.

12: Katekyo Hitman Reborn! - [also known as Reborn!] i found this by mistake and my life really hasnt been the same. mafia story. first few eps are just comedic and really dont tell you jack shit about the storm thats coming afterwards. holy heck, a main character that set standards for how to demolish your enemies? friendship! fight scenes that make you wanna fite anyone? so many powers that actually make sense? checkity check. friendship!!

13: Bungou Stray Dogs - hidden powers that main character doesnt know about? check. good dad dazai. another mafia story. a mafia boy tryna kill the mc because of his powers and dazai has become mc’s dad instead of his [okay i’m trolling lmao] but really this is a great mafia anime. theories. villainous characters that have been blackmailed into being bad.. really it has it all

14: Haikyuu!! - small chibi boy just wants to play volleyball in peace. “i can jump™” meets skyscraper black-haired blue-eyed god who rules the court. [trollingg] but honestly, this has to be one of the most accurate sports anime i’ve watched. spiky main and side characters that are completely adorable and its kinda hard not to get sucked in, but you will

15: Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! - gamer dude dies [by mistake] and on his way to the afterlife, he’s given a chance by a goddess to go to another world and defeat the demon king. grants him the possibility of taking any one thing to this new world, my guy picks the goddess [fukin dead] and whoops there ya go lmaoo. but no honestly, its great and funny and the explosion/action scenes are beyond E P I C. also best girl, Megumin, is there so you should def check it out

Friend’s Initial Impression Of DanganRonpa 2 Characters

So my friend who has a very eccentric mind and a unique sense of humor recently finished DR1 and is starting Dangan Ronpa 2. So I wanted to get his opinion and feelings on everything along the way. So he wrote this up just based off their picture and name, not even Ultimate talent.

Monokuma: The real villian behind DR1. His bear puns will increase, and his killings will be more imaginative and fitting for each deaths. Hes probably a real thing, but who knows, I still hate his guts, but thats probably what he wants.

Monomi: I hope she's hope to polarized the despair. If not shes probably a derranged rabbit thing. She's ready to have food for her children which consists of 1000 rabbits which the father is probably unknown til the last few chapters or ending credits.

Hajime Hinata: The Ultimate Tryhard- He's probably gonna try really hard. He is a model student and the most he's ever done bad is stepping on grass or cutting in line to get his favorite baked goods during school lunch. He'll be involved in every scenario and it is later revealed that he is the Ultimate Survivor, bet that hasn't been done right? Survivor, Non Killer.

Nagito Komaeda: The Ultimate Unhygenic- He is immediately casted as the weird one. He wants to be friends with everyone but he has a quirk that makes it hard to get close to him. He will be forever remembered for his long winded monologues about life, and he is likely a fan favorite because everyone can relate to him somehow. He will get accused of murder, and will likely get crushed in a stampede of humans in a Black Friday shopping because he ironically dies when people are selfish, but he at the same time got attention from people kind of. Dies in late chapters. Killer.

Chiaki Nanami: The Ultimate Merchandise Pusher- She is the best grill on this whole roster. Anyone that says otherwise is lieing to themselves. Sadly, she is so pure for this world that she will likely fall victim to something stupid or lame event. We will get to know about her favorite games and how selective she is with cake while window shopping. And after you get so used to her BOOM, a sideswipe. But its okay, I still adore her. She will likely die on her own accord because one of the other students refuses to give her a wifi password, and she can't complete her achievements and suffers. Dies In middle chapters. Victim.

Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu: The Ultimate Onomatopoeia- He is likely smug but don't let his looks fool you like it did to me. He's a well renowned actor and believes this DR2 is an elaborate plan to get him over the next new movie or DR3. If he can play any role, he can be in any movie. Check him out in Star Wars around Christmas time. He's gonna play a jerk that hits on all the characters, but we will find hes faced with a scenerio where he should adopt method acting and actually kill someone to gain experience. He will likely be killed through a filmstrip of all his past indie films and he finally gets his breakthrough role of being roadkill. Dies in middle to later chapters. Killer.

Ibuki Mioda: The Ultimate Hot Topic- She's in a band called Pollution Solution. She wants to prove to the world that anyone can play a kazoo if they tried hard enough. She has picked up a lead that a record label is pitching American Idol to make their return and she feels that this is her chance to shine. Sadly, all of her bandmates arent around, but what is this? Could she had broken away from her bandmates because of creative differences? Then all of a sudden she wants to be an idol, but it turns out to be a Love Live event. Frustrated that she can't express her music through normal means she decided to (pull the plug) on someone's life because they are doing better and more content than her. So she's all (amped) up. Her death will be unable to complete her lyrics with a feathered pen due to writer's block. Dies in later chapters. Killer.

Kazuichi Soda: The Ultimate Red Herring- I don't know. He looks like a jackass. He looks really insanely evil. Is this all part of the plan? I'm trying to stop drinking soda, but that won't make it any different from digesting his schemes. I'll let him play the victim I guess. But I've learned that looks isn't everything in this damn series, I'll likely get this all wrong. In one world he's the tutorial murderer in another hes a softspoken fellow that cares about his friends. Dies early on chapters. Victim.

Gundham Tanaka: The Ultimate Shining Finger- He looks like a stellar dude. Although he's probably a bit of a cold silent type. Or like one of those serious everything I say is a metaphor or haiku character. He's gonna be the one that's trying to collect intel of what's going on in the world, but gone too far. It looks like he likes animals, so someone they'll be turned against him because of the stupid puppetmasters/killer. Dies later chapters. Victim.

Byakuya Togami: The Ultimate Reddit Post- I refuse to believe this is the same Byakuya. Here in my state the auto insurance companies MUST offer the same basic minimum coverage in order to do business in the state. Everyone here must have at least the same basic level of insurance (both auto and medical) . You can go to any provider you choose and this basic minimum insurance level costs the same . If you want more insurance you can pay for additional coverage. But that basic plan is available to all. So why not have a similar program for medical insurance as part of a nation wide group policy. This group can be subsidized by the government but it would be managed by the existing insurance providers. (In other words if you want to be in the insurance business you must offer and support this minimum plan which would be a foundation for any other plan you offer) The govt pays the insurance company a flat rate to manage each person enrolled in the basic plan. The more money the company saves (the better they manage the insurance) the more money they keep. However if that company provides poor management it will cost them. Either subscribers will change management companies if they feel they are getting a raw deal or wasteful management would not be payed for by the government. One advantage I see here is that consumers would have an alternative providers to go to if they feel wronged by a particular management company. Insurance providers also have an incentive to offer additional services to the basic plan members in order to attract more subscribers and earn money. With a govt program like medicare your stuck with the one provider (the governement). As they say One Choice is NO Choice.... If someone wants additional insurance they can buy additional coverage from any provider they choose. But No one could be denied coverage for the standardized basic plan. Since everyone is part of this national group policy the basic insurance is portable and independent of supplemental policy one may have. So if you change jobs or move to a different state you may loose the supplemental policy BUT your basic coverage remains intact. You merely transfer the company that provides the management services for the basic medical. Insurance providers would get paid by the fed to manage the participants in the basic plan for each participant in the basic plan. this would put market forces into play for the insurance providers to make money by attracting additional participants through better service or offerings. COunter to this is if the consumer gets crappy management services they can transfer to any other insurance provider.

He looked at my lisence, wrote down some information and gave it back to me. He then said ''do you realize it is an offence not to carry your car insurance documents with you when asked to produce them at the roadside?''. Again I apologized and said that I had no idea that this was the case. He then gave me five days to produce my photo and counterpart driving lisence and car insurance documents at the local police station or I would be arrested for failing to produce documents on demand. He then asked me to provide a testimony which would be read in court if I didn't produce the documents and so I said ''I'm terribly sorry for any inconvenience''. He then let me out. (sometimes i think shes adopted by him other times i think shes biologically related). and reboot dante is her boyfriend (because he is still my favourite character and hes just really important to me). i dont have any drawings of her but she has white hair thats shoulder length and wavy, and she loves wearing crop tops and leather skirts.

Jeremy:Ok so he started out as a ripoff dean winchester (except a teenager who looked super emo cause that was my style when i was 15).Now hes a sweet pun loving nerd who still looks kinda emo but isnt as bad as he used to be. He’s a half demon too and his powers awaken during an extraterrestrial accident. He has a boyfriend named gabriel who is very sweet and cares alot about jeremy because J doesnt really have a good relationship with his parents and is pretty much a loner. but gabriel is a literal ray of sunshine who helps jeremy socialise and get out of his anxiety/depression fuelled shell when he can. Aeon:(aeons nonbinary and uses they/them and she/her pronouns so i usually go back and forth between the two sorry!)So aeons from another dimension where they live in a magical kingdom. theyre a mage and they love practicing magic and stuff. they leave their kingdom and move into the large forest spanning across most of the continent because theyre not content with how the king treated the teenagers and young people in the village they lived in so they just left. in the forest they meet a wizard-like sage person who teaches her more magic. she lives in a little marshmallow shaped house thats in a tree and practices alchemy and magic and they also go to explore the ruins all throughout the forest. one day though she finds a gold orb and she drops it once she returns home and she gets teleported to jeremy and gabriels dimension. she ends up passed out on a beach where jeremy was and he rushes over to check if shes ok. she ends up living with jeremy and gabriel in like a studio apartment however she desperately misses nature and often just disappears for weeks at a time to explore forests and stuff. but the boys know that she would be safe on her own because she has enough magic to protect her (however that doesnt stop gabriel going into mother mode and calling them every night to make sure that theyre ok and check to see if they need any help.) sometimes the boys join them on an adventure just because the city can be super stifling and it greatly improves jeremy’s mood sometimes. aeons clothing consists of her burgundy cape which she pretty much never takes off, croptops, shorts, skirts, boots, fishnet tights, sort of a goth-ish vibe but like she kind of has one off goth pieces she gets influenced by jeremy and gabriel alot so she takes elements she likes from both of them. she has no piercings or tattoos

unamed alien oc:so imagine a weeaboo, but for the entire human race? that is what my alien oc is like. he is a sentient gumball machine filled with eyeballs and tentacles coming out the bottom (he also has legs). his mission is to protect earth from alien threats that would offbalance the course for the humans but on a routine patrol his ship crashed onto earth. jeremy found him too and was shocked but just went along with what he saw cause he knew it would freak out gabriel. alien speaks like how octodad glubs and is very peaceful and likes learning about human culture. he can turn invisible in public so that people dont get freaked out by him. he joins in on the antics of the group and even tho he cant eat pizza it wont stop him from trying.

Interview with Artist Graeme Durant as part of Critical Perspectives at Teesside University

The following conversation with Graeme Durant took place as part of his participation in the Critical Perspectives at Teesside University Fine Art. Durant’s work work was the subject of a major survey exhibition at Baltic, Newcastle, UK and at Bloc Projects, Sheffield. For the entire interview, please go here.

Critical Perspectives: Graeme, one of the things these artist talks and workshops allow is for there to be a bit more of a cross-generational conversation between artists working at different levels along with students—to give students access to these other voices and approaches. A number of students contacted me after your talk and said that it was particularly helpful as you had been a student more recently, but were now getting higher profile shows like the one at Baltic. For them, it made you more relatable and perhaps helped them see a bit of a path they might apply to their own approach. How is this for you? How does it work from your perspective as I remember you mentioning that you were usually a bit hesitant in these sorts of talks?

Graeme Durant: I always really struggled with talking about my work, to tutors and other artist. Still kind of do. People tend to ask me what I make and my reply is mainly just “stuff”. I am slowly coming to realise what I do and why, and have a passion for the concepts I’m playing with, so can openly talk about them more.

Things like these talks help a lot! They add a good amount of pressure and seriousness to make a person open up more.

I have taken part in these residential retreats the past two years that have also helped me talk about what I do/have done. They took place in Cumbria a

nd Cornwall, and on them you live with 15-20 other artists/writers/dancers/thinkers and you discuss your practice or area of interest to one another. Its been really helpful to me so I am going back again in February!

CP: You mention that you are a bit resistant to theory, which I think scepticism is really healthy, but then a lot of your work self-consciously references work by other artists such as Baldessari or Brancusi, but also pop culture with references to people like Tilda Swinton. What’s interesting to you about this sort of in-between place/approach?

GD: Not really sure how to answer, I’m still on the hunt for the answer myself. I guess I make for myself, as an average entertainment or as banal distraction. Whether it is commenting on popular clichés or historical subjects the work becomes a DIY drama—a place where crude/slapstick/impotent art and precocious/sensitive/emotive art all exist as predominant characters. The work is habitually self-critical; I am the zombie drawn to the colourful, moving thing. Dragging my feet until some flesh and bones appear giving me a hint to understand my actions.

CP: One of the students asked me to include a question about your interest in making copies or knock-offs rather than pressing the real thing? For instance the skewed Kurt Cobain guitar or keyboard made from an object lying around studio or your arch?

GD: This is something that has only appeared to me recently, or should I say I’ve come to understand that I’m doing it. I would say I build fast visual associations between objects and conjunctions.

The idea of realising a thing you want or want to see by making it is crucial to developing and mirroring existing emotions and concepts outside the realms of language. I want it, I could buy it, I’m not, I’ll make it. Guess this has connections with kinaesthetic learning. Doing/making the thing makes you long to understand it.

I think this is one of the concepts I’m toying with a lot at the minute. I think there is something interesting about how, found objects and ready-mades have done a sort of full circle in the art world and are heavily used throughout college and beyond. Not that it is a copout but more of a natural progression, like how in school you copy a bowl of fruit, then you do a self portrait, then you have to choose an artist and make your work in their style. This follows a lot of artist around after graduating and it does make some interesting viewing. I saw a really nice piece of work in London and it was a book a guy made of all of his paintings of Leona Lewis (the pop star who rose to fame in X Factor). He had (or what I understand) no real necessity to contextualise his stuff, he just was a fan/artist which has appeal too.

CP: There is also a really nice casualness to the objects you make as well as your painting. Do you see any parallels to this approach to the work above?

GD: I’m not sure casual is the right word; it comes across as something ‘cool’. I would say it had a sense of constant improvisation. A conversation with heavy or phallic forms prevail for instance, and presenting them through a twisting of conventional and unconventional materials and painterly surfaces that are simultaneously flat and textured may be read as casual but they are all deeply considered. I always allow for mistakes, errors and follow different directions within my practice therefore encouraging experimentation.

CP: There is a show that has gone around called Supermarket of the Dead that is about the traditional Chinese practice of burning paper money or objects as a sort of offering to the ancestors in the afterlife. It started with really simple objects, but now it seems obsessed with creating paper status objects like ipads, Prada shoes, designer clothes, cars, paper lingerie. I think these sort of cultural translations and copies are really interesting, but I’d like to hear your thought in relation to what you do? http://www.skd.museum/en/special-exhibitions/archive/supermarket-of-the-dead/index.html

GD: I’m quite interested in when this tradition took hold and became modernised by making ipads and other commercial goods. I’ve heard of burning paper money before. There must have been some progression in traditions. I guess this it what I’m aiming for with my new endeavour with the bonsai and scholar rocks. To change/challenge/adapt traditions and conceptions of what they are for.

So they basically jazz up the coffin to put the fun into fun-erals, excuse the pun. I saw these in real life at the British Museum a few years ago and was totally blown away!

People have a tendency to embellish things and make light of certain situations. I guess this has parallels with the question below, I make deadpan associations with the titles I pick, to allude to certain information that I wish to divulge.

CP: Along with the resemblances that some of your object take (copies or replicas) you also seem to build a lot through resemblances of words or even tenuous similarities in words that add another level or visual pun to the work. How does this come about and what do you attempt with it?

GD: The titles come about from pulling in info from all areas, conversations, books, internet journals, memes, you name it! I just write the things that jump out to me down and go back through my notes and delve into them more. Some get so lost that I cant even remember writing them down. For example… my top three favourites…(taken direct from my notes)

you mean you want me to rush the rush job I’m rushing to rush deadliness of leisure and the uplifting effects of industry you left the door open so the cat ate the doughnut. Some are pretty obscure and I have no clue why I wrote them down…

CP: What is exciting to you at the moment (art or otherwise)?

GD: Land rovers/unimogs/oxyacetylene/local history/flat eric/the sea

CP: What kind of advice would you offer to students or artists just leaving art school?

GD: Think I’ll keep this one uber simple…just keep making!!.. it sounds silly to say but my years at uni were the highest achieving years, think there were seventeen1sts handed out. And I can only think of one person who got a first that is still actively making work. Quite sad really as some people were great and had potential but lost interest and faded away because the lack of support goes and you get a bit deflated. I didn’t get a first by the way. I got a 2:1 and was pretty chuffed!

CP: Whose work/ideas are you interested in lately? Why exactly? Any collaborations?

GD: No collaborations, but hoping that 2017 will bring some!

CP: What is appealing to artists about a place like Teesside or say Newcastle? Why might it be more likely that these sorts of ideas and approaches might emerge from an environment like this as opposed to someplace like London or New York?

GD: This is hard to answer… having lived in Newcastle for 30 years come January I always question the pull of London and other big cities have to artists… I can list things that are great about the areas in the north but wont as they are so obvious. But there must be reasons for moving south. Money I guess… sad to say. People get more funding and opportunities.

CP: If that’s the case then where do we go from here then, or where might it be important to go?

GD: Stay put? Follow the sheep? Move all of the interesting people you know to a small town and put it on the map?
