five songs on repeat, tagged by @mythopoetry
h’okay so for years i used to make fanmixes of “songs i put on repeat” either for that year or, when i had a lot of songs, for the first and second halves of the year. i like putting songs on repeat is what i’m saying.
lately i haven’t done the mixes but i still keep track so these are the ones so far this year. some of these (1 & 5) were already repeats from 2014. what can i say? they still hut the spot.
I Am Kloot - “The Same Deep Water as Me” (I Am Kloot, 2003) ; Drench your soul in the water / Cleanse your heart of the stain
Brown Bird - “Ebb & Flow” (Salt for Salt, 2011) ; If I should die out here at sea / (Ebb and flow, ebb and follow) / Anyone be mourning me / (Ebb and flow, ebb and flow) ; nb. i adore the entire album
Frightened Rabbit - “Swim Until You Can’t See Land” (The Winter of Mixed Drinks, 2010) ; Are you a man? Are you a bag of sand?
Hurts - “Illuminated” (Happiness, 2010) ; We are all illuminated / Lights are shining on our faces, blinding ; nb. i used this in my fanmix for fallen angels, A Gift For the Fallen, Volume 2: Landing, and it’s still one of the mixes i am most proud of)
Conor Oberst - “Lenders in the Temple” (Conor Oberst, 2008) ; I'd give a fortune to your infomercial / If somebody would just take my call

Tagged by @kiyaar several days ago! Thank you!
RULES: go to spotify, go to your On Repeat playlist (it’s curated for you), put it on shuffle, write down the first 10 songs.
Okay, here we go!
They Might Be Giants - She's an Angel. I have been listening to every TMBG album in chronological order (I just got up to The Else) and anyone who has seen one of my recent fanfic titles already presumably has figured out how much I like this song; it’s not my absolute favorite TMBG song ever but it’s up there and it would definitely make the hypothetical playlist I would make to explain what TMBG is like, because this is peak TMBG. It’s a song about the possibility that one’s girlfriend is an angel. No, an actual angel. It’s a problem for the narrator, yes.
The Gaslight Anthem - Biloxi Parish. Garrideb made a really good Starsky/Hutch vid to this. I love watching S&H vids because I can watch one and think “okay, surely I have now seen all the clips this show has of one man tenderly cuddling his injured partner” and then I open the next vid and there will be EVEN MORE. I love this show.
The Horrible Crowes - Behold the Hurricane. I think this is mostly the same band as the previous song; it has been on my “if I figure out how to vid comics I should vid this” list for a while, long before I saw Garrideb’s S&H vid. Then I found out they were the same band. My brain likes what it likes, I guess.
The Why Store - Lack of Water. Sometimes Spotify brings me playlists that are like “here are some great songs you loved from the 90s” and I’m like “I have never heard this song in my life but I really wish I had heard it in the 90s, thanks.”
They Might Be Giants - Ana Ng. The best song on the album Lincoln. Fight me. I have in fact seen a bridge that had “I don’t want the world, I just want your half” painted on the side of it -- sadly, it has since faded and been replaced by more graffiti because this was about twenty years ago -- and every time I saw it, which was twice a day, I wondered if the song had inspired the bridge graffiti or if this was in fact the bridge from the song.
Crosby, Stills & Nash - Haven't We Lost Enough? Yes, I am making a Steve/Tony 616 Civil War fanmix. Yes, this is the first track.
Phlotilla - Going Down Fighting. Thank you, The Old Guard, for introducing this song to me. That movie had a really good soundtrack.
Green Day - When I Come Around. I’m gonna party like it’s 1994. It has been 29 years and I still have no idea what most of the words are to this song. I keep telling myself I’m going to look them up and then I don’t.
Brandi Carlisle - Wherever is Your Heart. This is actually also on my 616 Civil War fanmix; it’s for the uplifting Avengers Prime ending.
The Cure - Friday I'm in Love. I have a favorite shirt. It is so much my favorite shirt that I own it as a t-shirt and as a hoodie. It is the words of Friday I’m In Love depicted as a series of pictures. It’s the best shirt.
Tagging @lysimache because I’m deeply curious how much of this playlist for her is Taylor Swift. Also tagging anyone else who wants to do it! You can say I tagged you.

Hi, do you have more content about the homeric texts, specifically about Diomedes and Odysseus? I depend on it for a livelihood gjhgkjhkdx
god I fucking wish....in terms of like adaptations, the only adaptation I know of that includes diomedes is dante’s inferno. and tsoa but I assume you already know it and I am not a fan of miller’s characterization of them. in terms of fannish content, @kashuan is a fantastic artist with good iliad opinions who has some wonderful diomedes and odysseus art. there’s this fanmix made seven years ago by a deactivated blog that I still listen to pretty frequently. i’ve reblogged basically every post related to diomedes in the last seven years and let me tell you There’s Not A Lot, but some of it is good. I can recommend some academic articles about diomedes if that’s your sort of thing, but that’s about it. pls make more diomedes and odysseus content, I will consume and promote every piece of it. if anyone knows of some secret place on the internet/an adaptation with diomedes and odysseus content that I haven’t found, pls let me know

The Purrfect Crime: Chapter 5
Chapters: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 Music Fanmix by @pennywaltzy
Rating: Teen
Summary: Bruce and Selina go on a lunch date. Selina receives disturbing news. Batman and the Commissioner set a trap for Catwoman.
The Purrfect Crime: Chapter 5
Bruce got to the office thirty minutes early, energized by Batman’s morning escapade at the pet shop. He couldn’t get Catwoman’s earnest rage from the night before out of his head. He should have put together the pieces sooner, but to be honest, the plight of stray cats around Gotham City was very low on his radar. The humans of Gotham suffered as much, if not more, than the animals—though he agreed deep down that the need to care for the city’s animals wasn’t diminished by Gotham’s other problems.
Debra looked up from her desk and smiled when she caught Bruce’s eye. Uh oh, thought Bruce. I know that smile.
“I made you an appointment,” Debra sing-songed.
“I’m all booked up for today—er, errands and that sort of thing. Alfred knows,” Bruce answered, trying to glide past his secretary’s desk.
The sanctuary of his office was only ten feet away. He could make it in three seconds.
“It’s a lunch date. Alfred said lunch was clear today. Selina Kyle.”
Bruce stopped in his tracks. Debra’s dimple was out in force and couldn’t have been more charming. She held a pen at the ready over her desk calendar. Her voice oozed a false nonchalance.
“Shall I cancel it? For your errands?”
The pen descended quickly . Bruce involuntarily reached out a hand to stop it. Debra was pitiless!
“No! Ah, I mean, no, thank you, Debra. Lunch with Selina sounds nice. I’m surprised she called, honestly.”
Bruce snatched his hand back and stuffed it into the pocket of his well-tailored suit. He felt uncharacteristically nervous. Between Debra and Alfred, he sometimes wondered who exactly was in charge.
“Don’t be. I think the Gotham Cat and Habitat Conservation Society is following up on several of the larger donations; sort of a one-on-one thank-you for your contribution. Or at least that’s what Ms. Kyle said.” Debra shrugged and set down her pen, turning to her computer.
Summarily dismissed, Bruce walked the last few feet to his office; work and a particularly hairy land development issue was waiting for him, after all. He turned at the doorway and looked back, his mouth half open and a half-finished thought on his lips. Debra cocked a suppressive eyebrow at him. He shut his mouth, shook his head, and closed the door behind him.
By the time lunch rolled around, Bruce couldn’t have been more happy about the break. He’d researched both hard and soft copies of Gotham’s property and zoning laws for several hours and was ready to tear his hair out. He knew his legal team had already pored over the pages in depth. But Bruce Wayne was smart too, when he chose to show it, and he certainly was stubborn. A morning spent with dusty old legal volumes wasn’t out of character. He leaned back in his luxurious office chair and scrubbed his hands over his eyes with a sigh. There were absolutely no loopholes. He’d have to pay the piper if he wanted to start residential and commercial development on that land.
Debra buzzed in on his intercom. “Don’t forget your lunch date, Mr. Wayne. Alfred will pick you up in five minutes.”
As if he could! Bruce grinned to himself and rose, smoothing the rumples out of his button-down shirt. He snagged his suit jacket on the way out of the office, gave Debra a conciliatory wink, and got on his way. Unabashed, Debra winked back.
“There he goes—like a bat out of hell when it comes to Selina,” she sighed happily to herself.
Selina’s glossy short locks were easy to pick out among the lunch crowd at The Dark Bite, a trendy downtown restaurant. She was seated outside under the shade of gently swaying branches. Trust Selina to know a spot with natural greenery to brighten the experience, Bruce thought.
She looked up and smiled as he approached.
“Is this seat taken?” he asked.
Selina pulled a mock frown. “You’d better not. I’m expecting a high-powered businessman to join me for lunch.”
“I’ll just move over when he arrives,” Bruce assured her and seated himself.
Selina smiled and looked the other way as he removed his suit jacket. An impeccably dressed waiter poured a glass of water, then another of white wine.
“I hope you don’t mind; I chose something ‘summery’ to match the weather,” Selina said, indicating his wineglass with the wave of a hand.
“Sounds perfect,” Bruce agreed.
“So how are you? How’s Alfred? Dick?” Selina asked, once ordering was out of the way.
Bruce sipped his water and leaned back into his rattan chair.
“We’re all in good health. Dick’s a little bored by summer vacation, but he’ll survive. He’s a bit too old for camp now. He needs to find a job.”
Selina let loose a silvery peal of laughter. “You definitely sound like a dad. Are you going to find him something at Wayne Enterprises?”
Bruce shook his head. “Maybe in a few years, but he’s too young and too charming to actually do any work at dad’s’ business for now. They’d let him get away with murder—and he would take full advantage.”
“Sounds like someone I know,” Selina chuckled.
“Guilty as charged,” Bruce agreed with a grin.
They paused, comfortable in the lull. A breeze stirred the napkins under their water glasses and sent the leaves overhead into a dizzying swirl. Dappled shadows danced delicately across Selina’s beautiful face. Bruce let his mind wander into territory he scrupulously avoided. Selina’s company was always a delight and left him strangely wanting when he was alone once more. He couldn’t help but wonder how a relationship with her would be. To ask for more—to give more. To see her smile each day, and hear her voice murmur close to his ear. At times like this, he was keenly aware of the shadow of the bat over his shoulder. Its burden felt heavy, its protection thin.
Bruce shook himself and tuned into what Selina was saying.
“...and we’ve put down earnest money to secure the property, and things are just going perfect. The new Gotham Cat Sanctuary should start moving ahead full speed in about a month. Honestly, that’s why we’ve been making the rounds and saying thank you to our donors. It’s such a perfect piece of land, and your contribution came at just the right time. Bruce, I can’t wait to make this place a reality. It’ll have room for all kinds of cats, big or small. State of the art veterinary facilities, specifically designed for feline health. Enough room that we’ll be able to take in new animals indefinitely—which is so important with all the kill shelters here in town! And there are some big cats with strange histories; we find more of them every day. Do you know, down in Texas, there’s a lion in a sanctuary zoo that was owned by a drug dealer? Can you imagine? Those are the kind of animals I want to help.”
Selina’s eyes shone with passion. Bruce stared, mesmerized. Selina was famously unflappable—he should know. He’d been trying to get a rise out of her for years. Her new project had clearly taken over, in the best way.
Her phone rang at the edge of the table. She checked the screen, thin eyebrows raised.
“Oh, I’m so sorry Bruce. Do you mind if I take this?” Selina half-rose from her chair.
Bruce inclined his head. Selina pushed away from the table and stepped over to the waist-high wrought iron fence that enclosed the restaurant’s porch. Their food arrived moments after she left, a phenomenon that never seemed to fail in Bruce’s experience. He unrolled his silverware, settled his napkin on his lap, and awaited Selina’s return.
His first clue that something was up was a shift in Selina’s posture as she returned. She still smiled, but it appeared glued in place. Bruce set down his fork, concerned.
“What’s up, Selina?” he asked, trying to peer under her lowered lashes.
She shook her head, chin dipping toward her chest. Bruce leaned forward and reached over with one hand. Her fists were balled up tight, white knuckle tight. He could feel tension thrumming under her thin skin.
“Selina, please tell me,” he murmured.
Her chin trembled a bit as she took a shaky breath. One tear dropped onto the tablecloth.
“The property’s been purchased,” she whispered.
“Oh, no…” Bruce groaned.
Selina nodded, frowning. “Some developer made a better offer. More likely he bribed the right city official. There were no other offers as of this morning! They were going to sign papers with us this afternoon. I can’t believe this.”
Bruce rubbed the back of her hand with his thumb, willing her fingers to unclench beneath his own. Selina brought up the edge of her napkin and dabbed at her eyes. She gave a gusty sigh.
“I’m sorry, Bruce. I’ve ruined our lunch.” She cast regretful red eyes over the table.
Bruce shook his head forcefully. “Don’t be. Selina, I know we’re not close, but… you can come to me with anything. I’ll always listen.”
Selina gave a tremulous smile. “I know that Bruce, and thank you. And you’re wrong. We are close. We’re just busy.”
“That’s true enough,” Bruce agreed. His heart wavered between a plunge of concern for his friend and a leap at the smile he’d brought back to her face.
They turned to other topics over the meal, but Selina’s bubbly energy never quite rallied. Bruce felt—and compartmentalized—irrational anger at the investors who’d cheated her out of her dream. Not a single call came through on his phone. He knew he had Debra to thank for that.
Inevitably, the time came for Selina to return to her other duties. Bruce didn’t press her for another glass of wine or dessert. She’d stayed pleasant through the meal, but it was clear she needed time to process her disappointment.
He escorted her to the valet and waited as her car was brought up.
“So, have you heard about the recent string of cat thefts in Gotham?” Bruce asked.
He’d stayed well away from mentioning it to anyone, but Gotham PD had broken the story in a news conference just that morning.
Selina stiffened and cocked her head to look at him. “I saw it on the news, yes.”
“It’s such a disparate collection of animals—big cats, a show cat, kittens from a pet store. I wonder what the commonality is,” Bruce mused.
“I trust Gotham PD to handle it,” Selina shrugged. “Or maybe Batman will get involved.”
“Maybe,” agreed Bruce.
Her car ready and running at the curb, Selina turned to Bruce and took his hands. She stood up on tiptoe and kissed his cheek.
“Thank you, Bruce. For everything. It’s really nice to see you.”
He gave her fingers an extra squeeze and let go. “You too, Selina.”
He watched her drive away, brake lights flashing as she merged with traffic. Alfred pulled up a few seconds later and came around to let Bruce into his vintage black Rolls Royce. Bruce smiled to himself when he noticed the well-trained valets side-eyeing the vehicle. Lost in thought, he strapped in and let Alfred return him to Wayne Industries.
Batman met up with Commissioner Gordon late in the evening at the GCPD Headquarters. Everyone except the beat cops and the front desk on duty had gone home for the day. Things were quiet as Batman slipped into a utility closet window he was familiar with. He didn’t know whether Jim found it unsettling or reassuring that Batman could get into into the GCPD building undetected, but it was always wise to have as much knowledge of a space as possible. From inside, the closet had a simple twist lock. Batman let himself out, careful to check the deserted hallway. Jim’s office was three doors away.
He noted first the noises coming from a cat carrier on Commissioner Gordon’s desk. Someone was protesting their incarceration.
“Ruffy, I presume?” asked Batman from the doorway.
“Oh! Batman! Do you always have to sneak up like that?” Commissioner Gordon grabbed at his heart as he looked up with wide eyes.
“Sorry, Jim. Force of habit.” Batman came up to the desk and peered into Ruffy’s carrier. “You’re a handsome fellow. Ready to serve your city, Ruffy?”
The tiny white cat meowed a question in return.
Jim rolled his eyes as he removed Ruffy from the cage. “Needy little thing. I can’t deny I love him, though. He’s a good cat.”
He held his pet up high as Batman pulled a thin collar outfitted with a location transmitter from his bat belt. He placed it around Ruffy’s neck and buckled it.
“Now, you’re sure the collar is secure?” Commissioner Gordon asked.
“You won’t lose Ruffy—that’s a promise. I’ll take good care of him,” answered Batman.
Commissioner Gordon gave Ruffy’s ears one last scratch, then deposited him into Batman’s waiting gloves. Ruffy revved up his purr. The Commissioner fixed the little cat with a droll expression.
“Well! Would you look at that! How quickly I’m replaced,” commented the Commissioner.
“Makes my job all the easier,” Batman chuckled.
He didn’t mention the catnip hidden in one pocket of his belt. Batman hitched Ruffy into an underarm carry and shook hands with Commissioner Gordon. He opened a window and ducked out under the panes of glass. The night air was cool and pleasant. Little Ruffy’s whiskers twitched as he sniffed about curiously.
“If my suspicions are right, I’ll have him back to you in less than a day, Jim. Thanks for volunteering Ruffy.”
Commissioner Gordon gave a final nod. He stepped back as Batman fired his grappling hook and swung away.
A few blocks away, Batman dropped down into an unnamed alley and remotely opened the Batmobile. Ruffy leapt right in and settled himself to one side of Batman’s centered seat. Batman shook his head.
“I’d almost think you understand what we’re up to. Or maybe it’s just the catnip,” he told the cat.
Batman and Ruffy drove to the edge of town and stopped at a deserted block. The area was somewhat known for being Catwoman’s haunt, although of course no one knew her actual location. Glimpses and sightings, amounting to little more than urban legend, were Batman’s main body of evidence. He was reduced to hoping it was true—and hoping she was not watching from the shadows. Batman cast a keen eye all around as the translucent carapace of the Batmobile slid back. Not a single shadow stirred.
“Alright, Ruffy. This is it. Do the Commissioner proud,” said Batman.
He exited the vehicle and picked Ruffy up. He deposited the small cat in an unassuming alley with a surprisingly decent amount of trash. The area was known for non-violent squatters. As a result, Batman hardly ever visited it. Thieves and murderers were more his concern. He pressed a hidden button on the side of Ruffy’s collar, then let the cat go.
Ruffy immediately took off down the alley to explore. Batman felt a twinge of concern. Ruffy was a pampered housecat, not a tough, feral stray. If he got in a fight, he could literally be eaten alive. Batman had already noted the absence of other strays—just like the alley near the pet shop. Hopefully Ruffy wouldn’t encounter another cat at all.
Batman leapt back into the Batmobile and sped away. He had a hiding spot or two even in this part of town. He parked not far from Ruffy’s alley and turned off the vehicle. Ruffy’s locator pinged on the Batmobile’s display and the readout of his vital signs was normal. Batman settled in for the night. He was officially on a stakeout.

TENIPURI
Not a new fic, by the way. I’m in the process of archiving my fics in just one place so old stuff like this may pop up here often.
Ignorant Boy, Beautiful Girl (Ryoma, Sakuno) Everyone expected them to get together by the time they turned fifteen. And yet, they didn’t. A RyoSaku fanmix.
Angus & Julia Stone - Just a Boy Do you believe that there is treasures in the ocean Did I say I’m just a boy One kiss from you and I’m drunk up on your potion That big old smile is all you wore
Tim Minchin - You Grew On Me You grew on me like a tumour And you spread through me like malignant melanoma And now you’re in my heart I should’ve cut you out back a the start
Guillemots - Made Up Love Song #43 You got me off the paper round, Just sprang out of the air, The best things come from nowhere, I love you, i don’t think you care.
Melpo Mene - I Adore You Lost in a daydream of blue I feel so free And then it’s like I fall from the sky Everything that I see is you And you should know that I’m thinking about what you said When you held my hand Oh, I adore you
Jack Johnson - Better Together MMM, it’s always better when we’re together Yeah, we’ll look at the stars when we’re together Well, it’s always better when we’re together Yeah, it’s always better when we’re together
Loney Dear - Ignorant Boy, Beautiful Girl
Everyone expected them to get together by the time they turned fifteen. After all, it was fairly obvious to everyone that she liked him (those daily lunch boxes had to mean something!) and that he liked at her (surely, he didn’t come to her rescue every time just because he was bored or was feeling altruistic.). How else should their story end?
But when Sakuno was fifteen, she stopped giving Ryoma his daily lunches and started going out with a boy from the photography club, a handsome young man named Ichiro. A month later, Ryoma dated one of Sakuno’s friends from the tennis club. It boggled everyone else how they could date people other than each other.
But he was Ryoma and she was Sakuno. They were never the type to follow conventions–or expectations. They just did not operate that way.
Sakuno had no doubt in her mind that she liked Ichiro. He was nice, he was polite and he treated her right. What’s not to like?
Yet, Ichiro still could not make her heart flutter the way a certain Tennis Prince did (and still does!). What was wrong with her anyway? Here she had a boy who liked her but she was still pining over someone who’d never reciprocate her feelings in the manner she wanted.
It made her quite guilty, using Ichiro to forget Ryoma and her stupid feelings. A good guy like him deserved better and more. But she was desperate. She needed to get Ryoma out of her system or else he’d stay there forever and she’d be forever hurting. Call her selfish for thinking about herself for once; she didn’t care.
She’d learn to love Ichiro in the same degree. She’d learn to forget Ryoma. It was bound to happen.
Eventually.
It was just a matter of avoidance.
The disadvantage of having their shoe lockers right next to each other was that even if they tried to avoid each other for the entire year, there still stood the probability that they’d find themselves in the same place at the same time.
Of course, neither Ryoma nor Sakuno would admit that they were indeed avoiding each other. The idea was ridiculous. They were just busy, that’s all and the timing was never right.
“Hey…”
“Hi…”
“It’s been a while.”
“Yes, it is.”
And then there was silence, followed by an air of awkwardness. Sakuno wanted to ask him a lot of questions. How are you? Are you happy? Did you miss me the way that I missed you? But she kept these thoughts to herself and all she managed to say was, “I heard from Tomo-chan that you won yesterday. Congratulations.” She smiled as naturally as she could. Ryoma replied with a blank stare.
“You did not see the game.”
Sakuno could have sworn that he sounded upset and/or hurt. But it might just have been her imagination. Her brain had this awful habit of making her think of things that weren’t there.
“Ichiro needed help in his project so…”
“Ah.” Ryoma nodded.
“I’m sorry.”
“That’s fine, Ryuuzaki.”
But it wasn’t; he wasn’t. He couldn’t grasp why she would miss his game for some project that Ichiro guy had. Surely, it wasn’t that important? Then Ryoma silently chastised himself for being silly. Of course, she’d choose Ichiro over him. It wasn’t even up for debate.
“I have another game on Friday,” he declared casually.
It was an invitation, a plea. Come and see me,please.
“Really? Good luck then.” She wanted to tell him I’ll be there, just like the old times, but saying that would be a lie. She didn’t want to lie–or at least, not to him anyway.
If Ryoma was disappointed (he couldn’t possibly be, could he? ), he was quite good in masking it. “Ah, thanks.”
They stared at each other silently, a thousand and one things were running inside their heads; a thousand and one things they wanted to say but wouldn’t. Couldn’t.
Ryoma eventually broke the silence. “I have to go.”
“Me too. I have to meet–” Sakuno stopped herself from continuing. “Uh, I’ll see you around.”
“Yeah, see you.”
They set off in opposite directions.
Ichiro could not help but notice that she was distracted. Not that she did a great job in hiding it, with her glancing at the clock every five minutes or so. It was one of those things that she had yet to perfect.
“Are you supposed to go somewhere else , Sakuno-chan? Because you can go if you want,” Ichiro offered. “We’re almost done anyway.”
Sakuno wanted to take him on his offer. God knew how tempted she was to simply leave and run off towards the tennis courts. It took much of her self-control not to do it. That and her nagging feeling of guilt.
She shook her head. “No, I have no other plans today.”
She wondered how Ryoma was doing right then.
If there was one sure way to annoy Ryoma, that was to tell him that his dating habits resembled his dad’s–or Ryoga’s. They were not the same at all. Ryoga would change his dates as often as he would change his clothes. Ryoma on the other hand, had gone out with five girls in a span of a year. Big difference as far as he was concerned.
“I’m not like either of you,” he declared one time, to which Ryoga had rebut by saying, “Yeah right, and I’m a poor, ugly turd with no sex appeal whatsoever.”
Ryoma smirked, throwing Ryoga a mocking glance. “Well, aren’t you?”
Ryoga shrugged nonchalantly.“I don’t know, Chibisuke. Why don’t you ask all the lovely ladies begging me to go out with them?”
“Your modesty never fails to amaze me.”
“And I should the say the same thing for your stupidity, dear brother.”
Ryoma’s eyes narrowed. Naturally, he did not appreciate any jab on his intelligence “And care to tell me how I’m being stupid?”
The older boy smiled. “Because you keep on going for substitutes when you could have gone for the original.”
Ryoma cleared his throat. “I don’t know what you mean.”
“Would you like me to elaborate?” Before Ryoma could say ‘not really’, Ryoga raised a hand and started. “You’ve gone out with five people this year. All five have long auburn hair which they like to tie in twin braids. Obviously, there is a pattern.”
“Is there?” Ryoma shrugged. “I did not notice.”
Ryoga rolled his eyes. “Right.”
When Sakuno turned 16, she experienced getting dumped for the first time. A guilt-ridden Ichiro confessed about liking someone else, about using her to forget this other girl who never acknowledged his existence.
“I’m sorry.It’s not you. It’s me.”
If only she weren’t getting her heart broken, Sakuno would have laughed at the irony.
“Hey, did you hear what happened?!”
Ryoma didn’t intend to listen. School gossip, after all, was never one of his interests. He didn’t want them nor did he ever seek them. To him, they were nothing but a complete waste of time.
“What?”
So he tried not to focus on their conversation.
“Sakuno-chan and Ichiro-kun broke up!”
“Seriously?! Too bad. They were so cute together.”
"Yeah. Why did they break up anyway?”
“Well, here’s what I’ve heard….”
Donning an expression of boredom,Ryoma leaned forward on his desk and rested his chin on the palm of his hand. Anyone who had seen him would think that he had other things on his mind. But he was listening to the conversation around him with complete interest. He didn’t mean to. Swear to god, he didn’t. But he ended up doing so anyway. Not that he had a choice. His classmates were talking so loudly, he couldn’t block their voices even if he wished to.Not that he wished to. For once, some school gossip actually ended up being relevant.
“Wait…what?! You broke up with Chiaki-chan?! Why?!!” Ryoga exclaimed, throwing Ryoma an incredulous glance. “Dude, she was hot!”
Ryoma shrugged. “It wasn’t working out anymore.”
“That’s what you said the last time too.”
“Because it really isn’t working out. What else should I say?” Ryoma deadpanned.
Ryoga eyed him suspiciously. “Chibisuke, are you sure that this sudden decision has got nothing to do with the knowledge that a certain pigtailed girl we know is now back on the market again?”
“Oh lord, here we go again,” Ryoma sighed. “How many times do you want me to say that I don’t like Ryuuzaki before you start believing it?”
“I’m never going to believe it because I know you like her.”
“I don’t.”
“Yes, you do.”
“No, I don’t.”
“Yes, you do!”
“No, I don’t.”
“Fine!” Ryoga cried out. “So can I date her then?”
Ryoma glared. “Fuck off.” And he hurled a pillow towards Ryoga’s face.
By chance, they saw each other by their shoe lockers again.
“Hey.”
“Hi.”
And the encounter was no less awkward than the other times they met. Sakuno wondered if they would ever go back to the time when they were actually behaving as friends would. She missed those days.
Ryoma stared at her, looking a bit conflicted. He seemed like he wanted to say something; he just didn’t know how to start. Finally, he managed to blurt out, “So, how are you?”
Sakuno blinked. “Eh?”
The black-haired boy ran his fingers through his hair. “I heard…”
“Oh.” She gave a small smile. “I’m fine.”
Ryoma nodded. “That’s good.”
Silence.
“Um… I better go ahead. Tomo-chan’s probably waiting for me.” She bowed. “ I’ll see you around.” She turned to leave, but he called out to her before she could take a step away.
“Wait.”
She gave him a curious glance.
“Well, I’m going that way too,” he stated casually. “Why don’t we walk together? If you don’t mind, that is.”
To say that Sakuno was surprised by his offer would be an understatement. But it would be a total lie if she claimed she wasn’t pleased by it.
“Not at all.”
Ryoma came up beside her and together they walked down the hallway, stealing glances at each other every chance they could get.
There was something up with Ryoma that he was not telling. Ryoga was sure of this the moment Ryoma barged into their bedroom and caught him red-handed, eating his last box of Pocket Pancakes.Normally, Ryoma would be upset by this and then he would rant about Ryoga’s parasitic tendencies and inability to buy his own food. But today was different from all other days and Ryoga wondered why.
“What’s up with you?”
Ryoma shrugged. “Nothing.”
“You’re in a weirdly good mood.”
“Am I not allowed to have a good day?”
And Ryoma went on to whistle a happy tune. Ryoga was certain he just entered the Twilight Zone.

That Belongs In A Museum!
A fanmix for 1931: Scheherazade at the Library of Pergamum, following the Sterling route.
Listen at Spotify.
Even more playlists here.
Tracklist and notes below the cut, notes are from the game (slightly abridged).
Don’t Rain On My Parade – Glee Cast
Well, today was the big day... doubly big, actually. My birthday and my graduation day! Time for the next step in my adventure!
I Get A Kick Out Of You – Hetty Kate + Sam Lemann
Anna. She's my best friend. I remember when Norma Howard tried to frame me for pickpocketing. Anna, no more than two thirds her weight, jumped on her back, wrapped her arms around her throat, and just rode her around campus screaming, "Justice! Justice!"
All That Jazz – The London Theatre Orchestra and Cast
And then there's Aunt Evelyn. She's eccentric, she's temperamental, she says that Prohibition saved drinking by taking it away from stinky men in saloons and giving it to women of refinement and long lists of friends, and I love her more than anything.
A Cool Cat In Town – Tape Five feat. Brenda Boykin
Dr Rudeger von Prenzwald? Old friend of the family. He was like the little brother my father never had. Plus he's the Graf of something-something. Good friend to have.
Archaeology – Danny Weinkauf
Professor Nigel Hemsworth is the best teacher I have this year. He doesn't have the kind of field experience I do, but a good heart is harder to come by. And that, Professor Hemsworth has in spades.
Fix The World Up For You – James Morrison
There was a time when Felix Weber was my best friend. Then he went one way, and I went another, and now its years later and all of a sudden he's someone who needs to shave, who has a job to support his mother and sisters.
Gangster of Love – Mark Bird Stafford
Sterling Evans: treasure-hunter, man-of-action, grifter and secret romantic. I think. What I'm sure he is is fun. I don't think I've ever met anyone as good as Sterling at making a girl crack a smile as the roof is caving in.
Secret Agent Man – Blues Traveler (Johnny Rivers on Spotify)
Roland (Smith, if that's his real name) is a smirking, secretive Briton of a man. I may occasionally feel uneasy trusting him, but so far he's never made me regret it. I just wish it was easier to make him trust me.
Dead Egyptian Blues – Trout Fishing In America
I know a prince. An Egyptian prince. From, heavens, I don't know? The Fourteenth Dynasty? This is not something that even my rather unusual upbringing prepared me for. Dad would be over the moon!
Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better) – Alex Rathgeber + Caroline O’Connor
(Australia) Unfortunately, we had company... no matter how often we seemed to leave Sterling and his oh so stealthy car in the dust, we'd get to our next port of call to find he'd already beaten us there!
Hollow Hills – Bauhaus
Two words. Raeks… Karahkwa.
Love And Treachery – Madeleine Peyroux
Sterling: You were in my way, so... I. Beat. You.
New Orleans – Hoagy Carmichael
Oh, Anna, don't be grumpy! It's nearly Mardi Gras! Revelry, tomfoolery, and public drunkenness... what could possibly go wrong?
This Dark And Twisty Road – Abney Park
Oh Diary, I can't believe it! All that wondering about Sterling's 'sponsor', who he was and what kind of horrible monster he could be...
Draw Your Swords – Angus + Julia Stone
I nearly lost Sterling - again - today. In that moment, being so close to him and almost losing him like that, it was like all my feelings crystallized at once. And then he said he loved me, and they went goofy all over again.
Whatever Lola Wants – Sarah Vaughan
Lorelei: This dig site is closed 'til further notice, but my tent's still open for business.
Walking Wounded – Tea Party
Rudeger: You, Mr. Evans here, you don't know war. I do. Lore does--she grew up in its shadow. You talk about free will, but when the armies start moving there's no such thing. You're worrying about giving up something that's already lost. You just don't know it.
But For Now – Jamie Cullum
Sterling: What do you think you're doing? Sadie: Adding a touch of light to the dark.

short version | long version
So, the thing is, this mix was originally a whopping 262 songs. That’s 17 hours of delving into my headspace. I know this because the mix in full can be found on spotify, for those adventurous enough. By the end of the year, there may even be more!
The original 200+ can also be found in month format, for those that don’t feel like dealing with... all that. I’m actually a little sad that I don’t get to talk about every single one of them, though I’m sure it would have gotten tedious in the end.
i. saturn || sleeping at last I’d give anything to hear You say it one more time, That the universe was made Just to be seen by my eyes.
This was, according to my last.fm data, my second most played song of 2017. Well, third if we count the song that racked up 10,000 plays because I left it looping on my computer for a week. Whoops. These first four songs on this mix are my Mcshep songs. But also, Sleeping At Last is lovely. There’s several other songs by them on the full mix, but this one is by far my favorite. ii. run baby run || the rigs So wait, keep your heart inside My hands won't keep it safe I'll just feed on dreams & smile as hope slowly dies.
And here we have my most played song of 2017, which I’ve basically been listening to nonstop ever since I discovered @randommindtime‘s Mcshep fanvid. It is absolutely earthshaking, entirely haunting, and just all around a beautiful song that describes John Sheppard and all of his issues to a T.
iii. the brothel (lidolido remix) || susanne sundfør We are ruins within ruins On every corner a gladiator is begging for another century
I’m not sure why this is such a Mcshep song in my mind since I first discovered it as part of a really ridiculously awesome X-Files vid, but my guess is it got thrown into a playlist between two Mcshep songs and was forever that in my head. Fun fact, I only recently, when making the spotify version of this playlist, listened to the original version of the song. iv. can’t pretend || tom odell Oh, feel our bodies grow, And our souls they blend. This song is the only song that has made it onto all three of my year-in-review mixes. I originally found it in 2015 as part of a Bioshock vid and then last year I rediscovered it in the form of @randommindtime‘s other amazing Mcshep vid. And honestly? I haven’t stopped listening to it since. I have no doubt that it’ll be on 2018′s mix as well. v. capsize || frenship Capsize, I'm first in the water Too close to the bottom I'm right back where I started Said I'm fine I found this song through either a Stydia or a Sterek gifset. I’m like... 90% sure that it was Stydia, because it was around the time that season... 6? came out? Whichever one that Stiles is taken in, and thematically it works pretty well for it. But, I’m equally sure I’ve seen a Sterek gifset for the same song. Whatever. It’s pretty and I like it. vi. undiscovered first || feist The height and the breadth, is it wrong to want more?
Gosh. Okay. So, Legion. Mindfuckery of a show that can basically be summed up in words like “acid trip” and “dance numbers?” and “omg aubrey plaza.” It was brilliant and horrifying and really, really cool. But what’s more, it had the best fucking music. The 8tracks version of the mix only has two songs from the show, but the full mix on spotify has six or seven. vii. feeling good (bassnectar remix) || nina simone It's a new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life for me And I'm feelin' good
This was the second song that I found through Legion. I mean, I’d heard the song before, but holy fucking shit. Like, I knew that I was attracted to Aubrey Plaza, but there’s every other character she’s ever played, and then there’s this role.
viii. kings || tribe society Lost in the world full of nonbelievers Searching for smoke in a stillwater pond A nothing king, they called a dreamer This is my life and I call it a song This and the next song I actually found because I had queued up feeling good on youtube while driving home from my friend’s house after watching that particular episode of legion, and youtube did that thing where it automatically queued up music afterwards? Only I lucked out that night, because the next six or seven songs were absolutely amazing. This was my favorite of those songs and quickly became my Horizon Zero Dawn theme song. ix. river || bishop Can't change the way we are One kiss away from killing
Another of the songs that I found that night! This one also got a lot of play while playing Horizon Zero Dawn. x. human || rag’n’bone man 'Cause I'm no prophet or messiah You should go looking somewhere higher This song I’d originally found through the Mass Effect Andromeda trailer but it quickly became a favorite of mine. xi. believer || imagine dragons By the grace of the fire and the flames You're the face of the future, the blood in my veins Even though this song has been in basically every fanvid since it came out, this was also solidly a Mass Effect Andromeda song for me, since I listened to it a bunch when I was playing the game. It’s one of the songs that I actually don’t mind coming on at work. xii. feel it still || portugal. the man Ooh woo, I'm a rebel just for kicks, now I been feeling it since 1966, now
I actually found this song before it got popular! The first time that it played at work/on the radio I was blown away, but I think the first time I’d heard it was on American Gods? At least I found it when I was watching the show. xiii. girl, you’ll be a woman soon || rafferty Well, I finally found what I've been looking for But if they get a chance they'll end it for sure Okay, so for anyone who is paying attention to this who lives in Columbus, I get my hair done at Virtue Salon, which is basically the best salon in the entire world. Even if you don’t live in Columbus, click on that link. Look at those pictures and tell me that isn’t the most adorable salon in the entire world. They have the best playlists every time I go in, and though I am not super fond of some of the lyrics to this song, I really love the slow croonyness to it. That was a really great day. xiv. wise enough || lamb I had a dream that all of time was running dry And life was like a comet falling from the sky I woke so frightened in the dawning, oh, so clear How precious is the time we have here
I first heard this song on the second season of Sense8 and I was struck by just how damn beautiful it is. It almost didn’t make this final list, but in the end I couldn’t count it out. xv. say you’ll be there || mo Any fool can see they're falling, gotta make you understand I'll give you everything on this I swear Just promise you'll always be there
I don’t actually remember what fanmix I originally found this on, but I remember that I was at the intersection of Clime and Harrisburg-Pike just outside the fire station when I realized that it was a gentle, gorgeous cover of a Spice Girls song and basically fell immediately in love. xvi. holiest || glass animals Yeah, you're the holiest, holiest thing I know This song I found as part of this mix, which is basically a young holy lovers mix and just. has so much quality music. But this song was the first that really made me start looking at Glass Animals. I’d heard some of their stuff before, but never when I was paying attention, not enough for me to decide if I liked them or not. Up until the last month or so, this was my top played track. xvii. the greatest || sia Don't give up, I won't give up Don't give up, no no no
Yeah, there’s no story here. I just really like Sia. xviii. bogeyman || johnny hollow And now I'm dancing for the doomed and the damned And I'm advancing unassumed with dirty hands
Someone I follow on tumblr had reblogged this song back in the spring-summer months when I was feeling very aggressively reylo, and I just. I really like that fairytale where the innocent girl grows up and eats the monster. It’s a favorite of mine and part of the reason that I like pairings like reylo and darklina. xix. to be human || sia And what's the point of knowin' it If you can't change it?
This song came on at the end of Wonder Woman and I made my friend Alex wait until I’d listened to it before I let him leave the theater. I fell pretty rapidly in love with it. xx. strangers || halsey We're not lovers, we're just strangers With the same damn hunger To be touched, to be loved, to feel anything at all I won’t say that this is my favorite song off of Halsey’s new album, because that goes to Mourning, but it is the song that I listened to most. I’ve been toying with the idea of an original novel since around the time the album came out, and this song came on while I was plotting some of it out in my head. I really hope I end up writing it. xxi. cities in dust || everlove Your former glories and all the stories Dragged and washed with eager hands But oh, your city lies in dust, my friend I think the first time that I heard this cover it was when I discovered this mix back in 2015. It was a mix for Holland from the Darker Shade of Magic series, but I ended up going back and listening to the mix again while I was reading the third book in the series. While driving to work one day, I realized how utterly perfect it was for Dishonored, and basically compiled my mix, the salt water sting, over the course of that day.
xxii. history || monakr Oh… when they write of us in history lauded only for our victory They don't never tell, never fail to tell They don't ever tell Oh…. other side in history
So, back in the summer I read Hermione Granger's Hogwarts Crammer for Delinquents on the Run, and it was absolutely fantastic. But in my humble opinion, the soundtrack that I discovered was somehow even better. I had to limit myself to only two songs from it on here, but a good half of them are on the spotify version.
xxiii. messiah || prides You don't have to lock the door I don't live there anymore.
This is the second song that I chose from that playlist, mostly because it ended up being the lucky track that had an extra play.
xxiv. i shall rise || karen o They'll know my name When they've forgotten all about you
I found this song well before I actually started regularly listening to it, and it ended up getting played around the time that I was mining for Dishonored songs for that mix, and those lyrics just called to me. Also, y’know, it’s a really great song. xxv. in the sea || ingrid michaelson No no don't rescue me I like the salt water sting
Another Dishonored song, this was obviously the song - and line - that gave me the title for the mix itself. I think I’d originally heard it as part of a Jaspis mix. xxvi. i put a spell on you || annie lennox I put a spell on you Because you're mine Okay, but this song in Annie Lennox’s smokey gorgeous voice just made me think of gay woodland witches and it was one of the best discoveries of 2017. xxvii. personal yeezus || chambaland Baby we livin' in the moment I've been a menace for the longest But I ain't finished, I'm devoted And you know it, and you know it
Okay, so let’s talk about Atomic Blonde. It wasn’t the best movie I’ve seen this year, but it appealed to a very visceral, gay part of me and ever since I saw this trailer I was basically in love. I’m sorry, but if you weren’t at least a little gay before watching Charlize Theron have a torrid love affair with Sofia Boutella while simultaneously kicking ass and taking names... you will be.
xxviii. gold | imagine dragons Statues and empires are all at your hands, Water to wine and the finest of sands. When all that you have's turning stale and it's cold, Oh, you'll no longer feel when your heart's turned to gold. I... don’t remember when I first listened to this. I think it was at work? But I saw some really good fanvids, and honestly? I should probably just admit at this point that I just love everything that Imagine Dragons comes out with.
xxix. which witch | florence & the machine Who's a heretic, child? Can you make it stick, now that I'm on trial
I am like 500% sure that I fell in love with this song because @kaikamahine said something about it, because I first started listening to it around the time that I realized Fantastic Beasts had a fandom.
xxx. thunder | imagine dragons Just a young gun with a quick fuse I was uptight, wanna let loose I was dreaming of bigger things And wanna leave my old life behind
Yeah, I just liked it. Also, there have been some really awesome Thor vids to this since Ragnarok came out.
xxxi. take me to church | hozier Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life
I wasn’t actually sure that I still listened to this often enough to add it, but last.fm tells me that it’s my fourth most played song. I mean, it’s a great song, and you can be damn sure that if in a twist of fate Hozier releases an album next year, every single one of those songs will be on the 2018 mix, but it has been a bit.
xxxii. trouble | valerie broussard Dangerously having the time of our lives These boys are just poisonous thorns in our sides Starting fires wherever we go Watching em gamble everything they own I’m just going to direct you to this animation and wail about Six of Crows a lot. Weirdly enough, I think I actually prefer the unfinished version of it. Some bits hadn’t been added yet, but I really love the grittiness of it.
xxxiii. pure feeling | florence & the machine Those strangers carry me I'm lost; they're finding me I... don’t actually remember where I found this one. It probably has to do with @kaikamahine. Either way, I have listened to it A LOT.
xxxiv. battle royale | apashe Work on 'em put a little work on 'em Trigger finger in the air I put a little dirt on 'em
This song is stupid awesome to blare while driving home from work a little fast at 2 in the morning. Also, y’know, it’s just great in general. See, Steve Rogers agrees. Also, oh my gosh, there’s a new Black Panther one.
xxxv. i may fall | casey williams There's a place where we'll stand outnumbered Where the wolves and the soulless will rise In the time of our final moments Every dream dies
So, sometime in the last few months I let my roommate talk me into watching RWBY. I’ve been less than interested in the past because I’m an animation snob and I just... couldn’t. But I marathoned the whole series in like a week. There were three songs that stood out to me, but this song is actually the one that made me finally break down and give it a chance.
xxxvi. not today | bts All the underdogs in the world A day may come when we lose But it is not today Today we fight!
SCREECHING NOISES. MORE SCREECHING NOISES. I’m sorry, but it has to have become apparent by now that my musical tastes are influenced almost entirely by fandom, but fanvids in particular. This song is the BEST pump up song that I’ve found in years.
xxxvii. is this love | the governors Did you think this was love Is love a future of your kind Don't you think I would mind If I would wasted all my time I can't love if you lie This song. Made my year. It’s dark and sexy and a little fucked up, and came around when I was in the middle of reading the Grisha Trilogy and struggling with just how hard Darklina was hitting on every single one of my kinks.
xxxviii. sweet dreams | mark hadley ft. dresage I travel the world And the seven seas, Everybody's looking for something.
This cover came out as part of the Wrinkle In Time trailer and I fell really, stupidly in love. This was actually a last minute addition, because I couldn’t stand it not being on here.

i have father, he’s not you | a sanji fanmix; pretty self-explanatory about his feeling for VInsmoke Judge and Zeff. (LiSTEN: youtube / 8tracks / spotify)
Side A (intro-track 09): VINSMOKE JUDGE. Most tracks are rock songs containing anger and hatred mood about shitty father who left his helpless child and keep seeing him as a failed son.
Side B (track 10-outro): ZEFF. Most tracks are slow rock and pop hitting right in the feels about a son holding on dreams and leaving home to make his father proud.
note: for 32 Days of Sanji prompt: family. Bon Jovi’s track isn’t available on spotify. Annotation is under read more.
INTRO: I’ll be coming home just to be alone. 'Cause I know you’re not there and I know that you don’t care. I can hardly wait to leave this place. By the time you come home, I’m already stoned. And you scream at me. I can hardly wait till you get off my case. This is not a home, I think I’m better off alone.
01. To my father, it's your son. Are my screams loud enough for you to hear me? Should I turn this up for you? I needed someone here to help me. But you don't know how to listen. And let me make my decisions. I sit here locked inside my head, remembering everything you said. All your insults and your curses make me feel like I'm not a person. And I feel like I am nothing but you made me so do something. 'Cause I'm fucked up because you need attention you couldn't give.
02. I was born in a house of glass and silver floors. One question with two answers I asked. Anywhere is better than here, away from you. A little boy who had been wearing my face had told me I was born to be given away.
03. Am I the greatest of your arsenal? Or am I the latest of your art of war? You're so good at what you think you do to me. You're no good at what you said you'd do to me. Because of you walking out of my life, there are words that don't belong.
04. Dear father, in your eyes, I just never added up. In my heart I know I failed you, but you left me here alone. You say that I'll never change but what the fuck do you know. I'll burn it all to the ground before I let you in. I can't forgive you because I remember everything.
05. It's in the nighttime. Am I lonely? I watched you go. My friends always wonder, ask "How you been?" Am I mistaken? He was a man who didn't want me anymore. He never round. How much did you get for selling out my name? Still won't forget those hazy days.
06. Father, tell me, where did I go wrong? You never made me feel like I really belonged. I just don't know what's ahead. I'll just keep my hopes locked away instead.
07. Hey dad, look at me. Do you think I'm wasting my time doing things I wanna do? But it hurts when you disapprove all along. I'm never gonna be good enough for you. I try not to think about the pain I feel inside. It feels like you don't care anymore. 'Cause we lost it all, nothing lasts forever. It's just too late and we can't go back.
08. You were my oppressor. And I have been programmed to obey. And now you are my handler. And I will execute your demands. Leave me alone. I must disassociate from you. I won't let you control my feelings anymore. And I will no longer do as I am told. And I am no longer afraid to walk alone. Let me go, let me be. I'm escaping from your grip. You will never own me again.
09. I don't want a family who would damn me and resent everything I am. I don't need to prove to all the ones who feel that I need to fit in. I won't ever tell you that I failed you. I'd rather start life over again. I don't want to fight you, just to spite you. But I'm not afraid to take you out. I'll never lose who I am. No, I'm sorry to say there'll be no sacrifice today.
10. I was a stranger, and you came to my side. And you said "Oh, you're alright now." And you were so knowing I felt so lost and confused. I barely knew you. Someone save me. I need you there when the nightmares and dreams have come true. Yeah, we belong
11. He's well aware how vital a father figure is, how big of a responsibility it is. Discipline to prevent things when they're older. His only son is only 21. His dream is my dream, my dream is his dream. And so he targeted to be the dream guardian Guarding it from anything and anyone whose harming it. But in his heart, he knows the hardest thing about it is. Giving up on his dream to be all about his kid. Sometimes a dream is all that we have. We have to continue to dream. 'Cause once it is lost amongst other thoughts then what really are we? I close my eyes and I can see the sacrifices he made for me. Put it aside for his family. Yeah, so I'ma keep it alive.
12. Daddy couldn't save himself. But he looked at me as what he could have been. Now I know what I've got to be. Everything that'd make him proud of me with my second chance that he never had. ‘Cause his dreams are at the bottom of his bottle and he's never gonna be who he ougtha. And he knows... that he's no hero but he's doing what he can, trying to make me a better man. He made me what I am. Stopped me from becoming another you. And I'm proud to say that he is my father.
13. With a gentle touch, all these burdens and such fears are wiped clear. Who says you are to stay? It's far from giving up. And then I'm lifted up. And from the floor, he prays away all my pain. "All the things you can't control should never destroy your love or hopes." I found a place where we belong. All I've ever wanted was to be happy and make you proud.
14. I know I took the path that you would never want for me. I know I let you down, didn't I? So many sleepless nights where you were waiting up on me. I've been around the world and never in my wildest dreams. Would I come running home to you? I've told a million lies but now I tell a single truth. There's you in everything I do. Remember when I broke you down to tears. Please forgive me for all I've done. So I bet my life on you.
15. I couldn’t believe it there was a tear in my old man’s eye. When I was leaving, he tried to say goodbye. I learned a little thing called sacrifice, givin’ up on dreams, lost a couple fights. I couldn’t believe it when the tears came to my eyes. It isn’t easy standing on the other side. ‘Cause I heard my old man in my mind saying, “Stand tall when you stumble. Stay proud when you’re humbled. All the lessons you learn won’t be the ones that you plan. And when you go on without me, walk like a man.”
16. When my strength was gone, and I just gave up on life. In my darkest place you were my guide. And you told me that I should live my life to the limit. When you fall down, get back up and fight. Well, the shape of my heart don’t lie. I’m determined when you trust in me, it’s all I need. Nobody can tell me they were there for me before you came around. There was pain in every heartbeat but eventually you built my resolve to be strong. Now I’m hoping, if you hear this. You believe that all that I do is to make you proud. Make me stronger, so I rise up.
17. Do you know how much it hurts to go and leave it all behind. I see you in my mind 'cause you were right there all the time, far away in another place. Give my soul just to see your face. Wherever you are is where I want to be. Look around and tell me what you see. Everything, everything but me. No matter how many miles stand in between, in my heart is where you'll be, holdin' on to all our dreams.
18. Because of you, I am standing tall. My heart is full of endless gratitude. You were the one to guide me through. This is what we dream about. But the only question with me now is do I make you proud? Stronger than I've ever been now, never been afraid of standing out.
OUTRO: When I left home to be who I am, some people said "No Way." But I laid it all down, gave everything. In my head rang the words that my father said, "You're never far. I will be where you are. Son, I know there'll be times you will feel all alone. And when you come to me, I will open my arms."

I have been working on fanmixes this morning, and thinking about them. Like most things I do, I rarely finish any fanmixes, although it is a default thing I do when I get into a fandom. Usually I end up just hurling a bunch of songs I suspect will remind me of the fandom into a big playlist. Sometimes I will find a few perfect songs while still in the fandom; sometimes I will listen to the playlist and whittle it down until it is less of a mess. But usually it doesn't go further than that, even if I am terribly proud of my efforts. The closest I have ever come to sharing a fanmix was that time I shared my list of "Unexpected Disney Songs For OUaT Characters", and I've changed it since then. (Also, not super into OUaT anymore except when I am into OUaTW, though I am still proud of this fanmix in its end result.) The most complete fanmix I have ever made, which I feel is probably as perfect as possible and shareable if I felt like it and anyone cared about the fandom anymore, is my Mohinder fanmix (Heroes). I'm particularly proud of the fact that it is probably the only fanmix on the whole internet that is just about Mohinder and not about him as part of a ship. (well, it would be if I had put it on the Internet...) I've got a small handful of Battlestar Galactica fanmixes that are pretty good but probably have too many songs and not enough focus, because mostly they are about one character's entire character arc. I have a pretty good handful of songs for a few Teen Wolf characters, and a PERFECT song for Peter Hale, but nothing resembling a complete fanmix. Ditto Stargate; I have a lot of songs for Daniel, and a handful of good songs for everyone else, but no real fanmix. I've had a fanmix that is just a little bit not quite right for ASOUE for probably a decade; i call it Invisible Ink and it is a Beatrice Letters-based Lemony/Beatrice fanmix, and no matter what I change or add or remove it is always not quite right. (I am, however, super proud of the fact that I had the title--and the song from which I got the title--ages before ATWQ existed and actual invisible ink was an actual plot point, if nothing to do with Beatrice.) I also have a not-quite-right but less polished Jerome/Esme fanmix (to clarify: not a pro-Jerome/Esme fanmix, more about how messed up and loveless they were together), a bare-bones attempt at an Olaf/Kit fanmix, and various attempts at collecting songs on the theme of various characters. Just yesterday, I threw together a "real housewives of paltryville" playlist based on jokes from the Unfortunate Associates podcast, and I'm not sure yet whether it is a functional concept for a fanmix or whether I have all the necessary songs for such a thing. Oh, and I had been working on a Lord Tedd (El Goonish Shive) fanmix off and on, and that's actually coming together surprisingly well. I just don't know that it's something there is any interest in. Basically, any fandom I have ever been in, I have some manner of playlist for. And this morning I am wondering about whether I should put in a little more effort and clean up some of them and, like, share them. I don't even know how people share fanmixes these days, but I could at least do like a list or something? Are graphics still sorta mandatory?

From Out of Love to Mountain Sounds [Dhurke and Amara/AA Spirit of Justice Fanmix. Listen at playmoss!]
[Crazy=Genius- Panic! At the Disco][L'amore è Femmina (Out of Love)- Nina Zilli][Where's the Revolution- Depeche Mode][Dragons- Caravan Palace][Sister- The Black Keys][Mausam & Escape- Slumdog Millionaire Soundtrack][Heart of the Cannibal- The Cat Empire][Lovers Flower Garden- House of Flying Daggers Soundtrack][Mountain Sound- Of Monsters and Men][Eternity's Moment- Bravely Default OST][Better Not Wake The Baby- The Decemberists][Like Sin- Chase Coy]
Hey, so after I had finished and posted my Dhurke/Amara fic a couple months ago, the story still won't leave me alone and so I went and did a fanmix based off their backstory. And yes, Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice spoilers ahoy. I got a variety of songs here, so I hope you guys enjoy both the fic and fanmix!
>>>My fic Dancing With Butterflies and Dragons the fanmix's based off of. Also got music commentary on why I chose these certain songs under the read more.
xxxx
1. Crazy=Genius [Panic! At the Disco] And I said Hey a-ay, hey a-ay If crazy equals genius Hey a-ay, hey a-ay If crazy equals genius Then I'm a fucking arsonist I'm a rocket scientist Hey a-ay, hey a-ay If crazy equals genius
You can set yourself on fire, hey a-ay But you're never gonna burn, burn, burn, hey a-ay You can set yourself on fire, hey a-ay But you're never gonna learn, learn, learn Hey a-ay
Starting off this fanmix with a bang. The arson incident is pretty much how things went downhill for everyone involved and Ga'ran able to pull it off.
2. L'amore è Femmina (Out of Love) [Nina Zilli] L’amore è femmina, se non riceve non si da (Tic tac, non riceve non si da) This is the mess you left, I’m out of love and it’s a fact (You left, out of love and it’s a fact)
I’m sure you’ll smile, you have to go You’re an independent grown man after all Out of love, must have been sent from up above Lala lala lala la…
This song is Italy's entry from the Eurovision song competition a few years ago. Yeah I imagine some of the lyrics can relate to how Amara feels about her husband before he came to get her. The translated version of the Italian lyrics, Eurovision has you covered.
If you guys are interested in Italy's entry for this year, filled with references of Buddha and a dancing ape, tho...
3. Where's the Revolution [Depeche Mode] You've been pissed on For too long Your rights abused Your views refused They manipulate and threaten With terror as a weapon Scare you till you're stupefied Wear you down until you're on their side
Where's the revolution Come on people You're letting me down Where's the revolution Come on people You're letting me down
This is Dhurke's lyrical theme right here. What I'm amused most is the band's latest album is called Spirit. YUP THE IRONY.
4. Dragons [Caravan Palace] -Instrumental
I guess you can consider this more of the whimiscal side of Dhurke and his Defiant Dragons haha. Plus the title is "Dragons," gotta add that.
5. Sister [The Black Keys] Sister, sister what did they do to you Sister, sister what did they do to you Did they take and try to break A heart that long It’s so wrong
Amara and Ga'ran's theme, plus The Black Keys are my jam.
6. Mausam & Escape [Slumdog Millionaire Soundtrack] -Instrumental
Anyone remember the movie Slumdog Millionaire, the one with the Indian guy wining his country's version of the game show and trying to find his love interest? Yeah thought this might be a good track of Dhurke and Amara on the run.
7. The Heart is a Cannibal [The Cat Empire] Goodness knows I don't like sadness, she cries before she wakes And so my friend, if you love her, don't turn away Don't fight it Don't run away We're people, and we're animals You're thunder, and the heart is a cannibal
I've been listening to The Cat Empire's music when in the editing stage of my story, and had this song on repeat the most lol. The lyrics I pulled out I can't help but think "You're thunder" can relate to Dhurke's name orign based off Druk the thunder dragon. Let's ignore the fact the song is likely about cannibalism.
8. Lovers Flower Garden [House of Flying Daggers Soundtrack] -Instrumental
You can probably guess which scene I have in mind for this music. >.<; Anyways, I admit to haven't watched House of Flying Daggers in a long while, but I remember enjoying it.
9. Mountain Sound [Of Monsters and Men] Some had scars and some had scratches It made me wonder about their past And as I looked around I began to notice That we were nothing like the rest
Hold your horses now Sleep until the sun goes down Through the woods we ran Deep into the mountain sound Hold your horses now Sleep until the sun goes down Through the woods we ran
The lull during the few months Dhurke and Amara got together.
10. Eternity's Moment [Bravely Default OST] -Instrumental
There's one scene in my story where Nahyuta reads to his mother an old Khura'inese tale I thought of, and I thought this musical piece from BD works well, gives a storybook feel.
11. Better Not Wake The Baby [The Decemberists] Make your moan of your lot in life Split your mind half crazy Gouge your eyes with a butter knife But it better not wake the baby
How long will this go on? How long, indeed? You can bang a drum 'till the money's all gone But it better not wake the baby
When the Ga'ran regime caught on Dhurke and Amara, then taking Amara and Rayfa back to the palace. "Better Not Wake the Baby" boy that's a good title, right?
12. Like Sin [Chase Coy] You got a silver tongue And you run your mouth at every chance you get In time I might forgive you But I'm not that quick to forget
I admit, been trying to find that last song that fits how I had Dhurke and Amara's relationship at the end of my fic tragic but hopeful, and... Well, ok the lyrics could fit more somewhere in the middle but the music is calming. Then again, Amara still said how Dhurke has a silver tongue, soooo haha. Also for some reason it's a bit hard finding lyrics to this song orz.
...As I was making this playlist, apparently Crazy=Genius and Mountain Sound have been added in several playlists already. @_@ Oh well, these two songs still fits this fanmix, lol.

18, 26!
18: any fanmixes you’ve made for this fic/verse?
I’ve never made a fanmix (though I’d love and heart-eyes forever if anyone wanted to do something for any of my stuff), but I like to listen to music and get inspired by songs, so that’s close enough. So, songs I can link to fics:
Florence + Machine, especially her first album, Lungs, which I listened to on repeat in that middle period between several years in on my obsession with the Silm but before I started to de-lurk and share my head-canons and write my fics. So the older fics/fics whose roots come from those years, “Brides of Death/Gift of Men”, that Andreth story, is Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up) and The Dog Days Are Over. “Howl”, where I zero in on the festival/ceremony of remembering their exodus towards Beleriand, is also that song and the fourth song, Howl. There’s several Florence songs that scream Aegnor/Andreth to me, and that one that’s the Lay of Leithian in pop song form, so there’s “Hold Fast Err Night Comes”, but I still haven’t written the exact scenes of Aegnor/Andreth fluff that Paolo Nutini’s Candy demands.
For “Of Ingwë Ingweron”, especially the early chapters, I listened to the Journey video game soundtrack.
Also when writing “Release from Bondage”, I listened to the Game of Thrones soundtrack, in particular tracks from season two and especially Theon’s theme and variations on it and Winterfell’s theme, for obvious reasons.
26: anything you’re planning to write in your fic that you’re worried readers might like?
Aha. ahaha. ha. hahahaha. I’m not a BNF and I’m not writing the fan favorites or favorite settings, my work is heavily OC centeric (and interconnected to each other), so I struggle with the feelings of wondering if any readers will like the very premise of my work with the desire that they should and would love it as much as me. In specifics- Am I respecting the horror of what I’m writing about, these imprisonments and death and war, and is the awfulness coming across to the reader in a way that they are satisfied? (then the counterpoint voice- is this too much? should this have been tagged for warnings and rated higher? Oh gods am I a bad/rude writer and triggered someone?)
With characters like Aglar- will this be too much screen-time connected to/about the Fëanorians- but it’s unflattering so will I have the lynch-mob from their fans?
Are my tangents on fish and food and rivers interesting? Is there enough romance? Too much unrequited love in the backstories of the Ten from Tol Sirion?
How much of Oromë among the Elves and the Three Prophets going to Valinor do I have to write to satisfy readers? Can’t I write slice-of-life and quasi-anthropological dissertations on early life of Ingwë and others and not betray the expectations of “Of Ingwë”? Can I flesh those scenes out enough?

SO YOU'RE TAKING QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR FIC, EH???? Then let me do a throwback and go choose - "Baby Let Me Follow You Down". :D?
Ohhhhh my former favourite fic. The one I missed a show by a band I REALLY WANTED TO SEE in order to finish. The one I wrote half of while sitting on a balcony looking at the ocean and NOT going to the professional conference I was supposed to be attending...
I love this fic, still, at least in concept. But there are A LOT of things I would change about it if I were writing it now.
You didn’t specify a question (although I see now that the post didn’t actually ask you to, so that’s on me). So here we go:
1: What inspired you to write the fic this way?
The first thing you need to know is that it was written as part of the Dragon Age Reverse Big Bang and was inspired by a fanmix that basically had the theme of “co-dependent relationship”. So part of the theme and idea behind the fic came from that. As for the rest--honestly, the thing that sticks out to me the most is that when I first wrote it I used third person POV and then AFTER IT WAS ALREADY WRITTEN I decided the story needed immediacy and a tighter POV and switched it to first person AND present tense.
At the time, I stood by that decision. I thought it made the fic better and tighter and more tense, but when I read it now I sort of hate that it’s in first person AND that it’s in present tense.
2: What scene did you first put down?
The first one. I’m traditional like that. I have to write linearly or I get myself all messed up.
3: What’s your favorite line of narration?
THIS!
“The Crown and the Lion is one of the worst establishments I’ve ever frequented, but their drinks are cheap, their food isn’t awful, and my apartment is upstairs, so it's somehow turned into my default bar of choice. I’d even worked there for a while, back when I was in law school. Bartender at the seediest establishment in town wasn’t even in the same vicinity as any Rendon Howe pre–approved life plans, but after my family was disgraced and whatever money we’d had left disbursed to the crown as reparations, I hadn’t been left with much choice. I’d taken the job, used the tips to pay off some of my loans, and tried to look at the positives. I was alive, I was still working toward a career, and spending nights tending bar allowed me to meet some of the people I’d no doubt be defending in court, someday."
4: What’s your favorite line of dialogue?
“So, what? I just wear this set of clothes every day and then bring them home and wash them at night? I don’t think anyone’s going to be thrilled the next time I show up in court wearing stained jeans and a t–shirt with a griffon on it.”
5: What part was hardest to write?
Ugghhh the whole entire thing. I mean, on the one hand this was pretty easy (compared to how things are going now), but I remember really struggling with this, to the point that I honestly wasn’t sure I was going to get it done. 2013 was a lifetime ago, though, so I can’t say I remember the specifics. I just remember really struggling to get the tone right and the tension (I don’t think I did, looking at it now, but for where my writing was at the time, it’s pretty okay) and the whole relationship. This pairing is one of those that I like to write where you sort of come out of the fic hating everyone if everything goes well, but it needs to be a balance and with the whole co-dependency thing it was hard to keep Anders sympathetic.
6: What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?
I mean, the whole present tense, first person thing. And I don’t know that I would have specifically written the relationship this way if I didn’t have the fanmix. Then again, it’s not that much of a stretch compared to how I canon it in my head (because lbr there is ALMOST ZERO ACTUAL CANON to go off). I think one thing that’s different is that they don’t end up together in the end, but they’re both happy about it. That’s not usually how things go with me and this pairing, but in this case it needed to be.
7: Where did the title come from?
One of the songs in the fanmix - it’s also the title of Chapter 4.
8: Did any real people or events inspire any part of it?
In this case, no. Or, at least, not intentionally. Sorry to disappoint, but it is NOT about football boys and instead is about my lovely, lovely, lovely loves from Dragon Age: Awakening (an expansion to the first game) who in canon say approximately five things to one another ever, because that is all it takes for me to point at them and yell OTP FIVE LIFE.
9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?
I mean, while I was writing it, yes. See above about how I wrote it in third person POV and past tense and then CHANGED ALL OF THAT AT THE LAST MINUTE. Makes me wonder if I still have that version anywhere. I wonder if I will like it better.
10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story?
At the time, that was all I was writing, for one thing. But also... someone said “dysfunctional, codependent or otherwise broken romance.” and I thought “what else could that possibly be but Anders/Nathaniel?”
11: What do you like best about this fic?
The actual story it is telling. The narrative arc. I really like the concept and the story and the bones of it all.
12: What do you like least about this fic?
The style. At the time my writing style was really minimalist (believe it or not, this is actually LESS minimalist than the rest of what I was doing at the time) AND I still regret my POV/tense switch.
13: What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn’t listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?
In this case, it’s based on a fanmix so I basically listened to that on repeat. You can find it here.
14: Is there anything you wanted readers to learn from reading this fic?
No? Seriously, I’m not that deep.
15: What did you learn from writing this fic?
Writing it... I don’t know. That I’m a stubborn bitch. That I *CAN* write and finish things on deadline and to someone else’s prompt if I just buckle in and do it. The importance of clear communication via email (the reason there are three fics for this one fanmix is that when I emailed the mods and said I might not finish on time but I was going to try my hardest they told me to let them know if I wasn’t going to be able to and they would look for pinch hitters. I took this at face value and therefore didn’t tell them I WAS, in fact, going to finish it. They took this to mean I wasn’t going to because I never got back to them and asked others to fill in. I was angry about it because the reason I gave up a lot of life things in order to do it was that I didn’t want to leave someone in the challenge with NO story and then they got people to do it anyway, but it all worked out and I got over it.)
That was a lot. Especially for an OLD AF FIC that I wish I still liked but mostly just want to re-write now that I learned some things about writing.
Anyway... THANKS!
Everyone else... ask me things! You can specify numbers and then I won’t write you a fic-length response. But also feel free to not. It just might take me longer to get back to you.

(This mix was originally posted on LJ in February of 2008. I’m putting all my old fanmixes online w/ the info here! :D)
IF YOU HAVEN’T PLAYED THE FIRST BIOSHOCK, THERE ARE SPOILERS IN THIS FANMIX (just a warning XD)
1960. Your name is Jack. You're the only survivor in a plane crash in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Surprisingly, you find yourself near a curious tower jutting out of the water. You wade over, climb inside and find yourself in a sprawling underwater city, complete with clubs, apartments, factories and leaks. What was this place created for? Who created it? Why? How? It's a technical marvel, why hasn't it been all over the news? These are the questions you are searching for answers to, until more questions materialize, that is. Such as "Who is Atlas and why am I helping him?", "Why is my hand seething fire, insects and electricity?", "Why are these gigantic robots suddenly out for my head?" and "Oh dear god, why is that little girl chugging the red fluid she just needled out of that corpse?" Society here has collapsed, the people have gone absolutely out of their minds, everyone is jacked up on plasmids and now you're stuck in the middle of it. Welcome to Rapture.
Fanmix on Playmoss!: https://playmoss.com/en/hexterah/playlist/would-you-kindly-a-bioshock-fanmix (a couple of the songs won’t play on PM cause of the companies that have their music blocked -- they can be found on the actual youtube site though, if you wanted to hunt down the songs under the cut that the playlist skips~)

[ The body is a terrible thing to waste. So says the artist. The Purrfect Crime: Chapter 2
At 5:58 a.m. the next morning, Batman stood outside the grand auditorium that hosted the Southminster Cat Show, two cups of steaming coffee in hand. It felt a little odd to stand around holding coffee in broad daylight, but even in summer most of Gotham wasn’t awake and on the streets yet. Batman locked his jaw against a yawn. An unmarked sedan pulled up in front of the doors, its quiet engine purring for a moment before it shut off. Commissioner Gordon exited the driver’s seat and slammed the door shut, knuckling some sleep out of one eye as he did so.
“Morning, Batman,” he said, gratefully accepting the proffered cup of coffee.
He didn’t blink as he raised it to his lips and found it creamed and sugared exactly to his liking. Of course Batman knew how he took his coffee. Sometimes the Commissioner marveled at the world he lived in, but it was too early for such existential musing today.
“Good morning, Jim. I trust you slept well—and that Ruffy was around to keep you company?” Batman waited politely as an officer in uniform unlocked the exterior door and held it open for the pair of them.
“He sure was. No worries. Hey, Carl,” the Commissioner greeted the flat foot.
“Hey, Boss. Nothing unusual after they reported the missing cat last night. The place has been quiet. Well, except for her,” Carl said the last under his breath, pointing a thumb over his shoulder at a frumpy looking woman.
“Is that Mrs. Golightley?” the Commissioner asked.
Carl nodded, his lips pressed hard together.
“Say no more.” The Commissioner straightened his tie and re-tucked his shirt into his slacks. “Okay, let’s go.”
They approached the irate woman, who advanced menacingly as soon as she caught sight of the Commissioner. She wore a pink cashmere sweater over a pink, plaid pencil skirt cut below the knee. The color of the rich fabrics clashed with her expensive, red woolen jacket.
“Finally. Finally! I’ve been here since four in the morning!” she fumed, throwing her hands up in the air.
“Hello, Mrs. Golightley, I’m—”
“I know who you are, Commissioner. I see you in the papers often enough. What’s he doing here?” She turned her gimlet eye on Batman, a sneer curling her upper lip.
Unperturbed, Batman replied, “Police consultant. I’m here by request.”
“Ridiculous costume. You can’t expect anyone to take you seriously,” she shot back.
Batman swallowed a response Robin would have been proud of. He turned to inspect the premises, listening as the Commissioner began his interview. They stood in a generous foyer. Soft morning sun filtered through skylights overhead. Batman scrutinized them carefully, but they didn’t appear to have been tampered with.
With a thousand missing cats—and a single cat-themed thief in Gotham—Batman had a short list of suspects. But it wouldn’t do to draw a conclusion without evidence. Catwoman had more than one modus operandi for breaking and entering. He’d check the door locks next.
He followed Mrs. Golightley and the Commissioner as they made their way into the main auditorium. It was decorated in stately tones, the impression of class and poise unmistakable. Even the cat agility course projected an air of seriousness. A few owners were already running their felines over the course, or placing them onto inspection podiums to practice judging procedures. Most of the animals were far more demure than the cats Batman usually encountered. Not a single hiss or spit could be heard as the animals were carefully handled and moved around.
Mrs. Golightley strode through the center of the auditorium, her pace hurried as they neared a door in the back wall.
“This is where the cats stay overnight. We’re not allowed to take them home once they are registered in the competition,” she said, opening the door and ushering them through.
The back room adjacent to the auditorium was spacious enough for a hundred or more cats. Heavy metal shelves were affixed to three of the walls and crates of all sizes rested upon the shelving. Each owner brought their own crate for their cat, Batman realized. Most were large enough to fit two cats comfortably and were kept neat, toys, blankets, and food dishes arranged within. Mrs. Golightley, however, led them to the smallest crate in the entire room—barely big enough for a kitten to stretch out. Batman fingered a lock on one of the closed cages.
“Do the owners receive a key for their cat?” he asked Mrs. Golightley.
She nodded.
“I have a key to this crate and one of the judges is entrusted with the other. No one else should be able to let my kitten out. I think the judge is dirty. There’s no other explanation,” she said in a loud stage whisper.
“Now, now, let’s not go accusing without proof,” said the Commissioner, raising two hands in defense.
Batman knelt before the tiny crate and looked at the bottom of the lock. He grabbed a mini-LED flashlight from his belt and shone its intense beam over the keyhole. The other two watched with interest, Mrs. Golightley forgetting her ire for a moment.
“It’s been picked,” Batman announced, pointing at the keyhole. “See the scrapes against the keyhole opening? A normal key will certainly scratch, as the user misses and finds the fit, but a lockpick kit leaves finer, fresher grooves. Commissioner, I do believe this evidence points to the cat being stolen.”
“I knew it!” Mrs. Golightley roared. “Commissioner, I want my kitten back immediately! It’s a very rare breed, practically priceless! Its value will only increase when I win Grand Prize tomorrow. I want it back, and I want it in perfect condition.”
She poked her nose right into the Commissioner’s face and stabbed one long, bony finger at his tie. She was tall enough that the Commissioner was unable to loom over her, but he tried anyway.
“Mrs. Golightley, I have my best detectives on the case. You’ll hear from us the moment we have news of your kitten’s whereabouts,” he said, clipping the words off succinctly,
“I’d better. I’ll take this all the way to City Hall if I have to,” Mrs. Golightley seethed.
Batman melted into the shadows as the Commissioner opened his mouth to fire back. The two traded comments, unaware of his stealthy retreat. Batman ran his flashlight over the rest of the space as he walked the length of the shelves. He checked out every crevice and nook, seeking a way into the room. He’d noticed the single door into the room was in perfect working order, so the thief hadn’t entered that way - no evidence of lock picking. He wondered about that. If the thief had a perfectly good lockpicking kit, why not just use it to facilitate the whole crime?
A throat cleared quietly behind him. Batman paused in his ruminations and turned to find an elderly security guard eyeing him nervously.
“Yes?” Batman rumbled.
“Can I uh, can I talk to you?” the man asked.
He held his cap in both hands and twisted the brim. Batman watched him shuffle his feet and took in the sight of his bowed posture and rumpled uniform. Batman nodded, indicating a quiet corner of the room. The guard followed him.
“What’s on your mind?” asked Batman.
“I uh, I need to share some information. Off the record, if you know what I mean? The police already interviewed me,” the security guard stammered.
“Okay, Bill,” said Batman, reading the man’s name tag. “I take it you were on duty last night?”
“That’s right,” Bill confirmed. “And I didn’t see anything. I don’t know how that tiny cage was opened, unless someone got a copy of the key or something.”
“It was picked,” Batman supplied. “Were you in this room guarding the cats?”
Bill leaned close to whisper. “To be honest, I was asleep! Please don’t tell the cat show, I’ll be fired!”
He rubbed his neck in embarrassment, straightened out his cap, and settled it back on his head. His gray mustache twitched and he ran both hands over his five o’clock shadow.
“I really need this job. It’s hard to keep awake all night, though. I have to take my daughter to school in the mornings, and-”
“-and we’re going to keep this confidential, off the record,” Batman cut in.
Relief overtook the man’s features and he sagged against the wall. “Thank you, Batman. I want that sweet little kitten found, but I’m not willing to get fired for the harpie over there.”
“You say it’s a kitten? Can you give a description?” Batman asked.
“Sure can. I’ve made friends with a fair amount of these cats in the last week. I suppose they’re all valuable, but in my opinion that little kitty is worth more for her disposition. She’s got a tawny coat and big, sad green eyes. I imagine you’re not much of a cat person, but I am, and that little critter just wants a home where it is loved. I always take time to pet it every night. Since we’re off the record, I can be perfectly honest and say I’m truly glad the kitten is out of that crate. Have you heard the term failure to thrive?”
Batman nodded, not liking where the man’s information was going.
“I know it’s not usually used for a scenario like this, but Mrs. Golightley’s cat was looking thinner and less healthy to me. She’d stop in every six hours or so during the day—we keep a log, so I checked—but she would just run it through the course and drop in some food and water. Other than myself and the other guards, no one gave the kitten any love or attention. I’d personally use the term neglect, but I’m not saying anything illegal happened here. Except the theft, you understand?” His confidence back, Bill’s tone turned stern.
“I understand,” Batman replied, glancing over his shoulder to where the Commissioner and Mrs. Golightley were still arguing.
The rustle of a cleaning cart interrupted the pair as a woman from janitorial entered the room.
“Excuse me,” she said, touching the brim of her cap as she hefted a mop out of her mop bucket and started on the opposite end of the room.
A flash of metal between Bill’s feet caught Batman’s eye. He motioned for the security guard to step aside and knelt down.
“Now, this is interesting,” he said, holding up a small metal screw for Bill to see.
A moment of hunting with his flashlight revealed three more. Bill had been standing in front of the air return grate. A quick inspection revealed it was missing the four screws to secure it in place.
“Commissioner, I think we’ve found the method of entry,” Batman called.
The Commissioner and Mrs. Golightley crossed quickly, the woman slipping on wet tile as she passed. She clutched Commissioner Gordon’s arm to regain her balance.
“Put a sign up!” Mrs. Golightley snapped at the janitor.
The janitor tossed her long ponytail back and immediately complied, popping open a yellow, A-shaped CAUTION sign and standing it on the wet floor. She dipped her head even lower and went back to mopping.
“Commissioner Gordon, Bill and I discovered the screws to the air return were removed. I think our thief came in during the day, removed the screws, then used the ducts to enter and exit last night after the room was locked. Ah, Bill?”
Batman turned to the man, who was nearly quaking in his shoes.
“Bill, did you leave this room last night for any reason? Perhaps to use the facilities?”
Bill cleared his throat and straightened up. “Yes, that’s right Batman, I did. Only once, and I locked the door behind me.”
Batman gave a small smile and snapped his fingers. “That’s when the thief entered. Entrance and escape were already taken care of, so the thief only had to wait for the perfect moment to slip in and pick the lock!”
Bill nodded his head in quick motions of agreement, his hands clutched tightly together. Batman knew it was more likely the thief had waited to hear Bill’s snores before making his move, but it was all the same. Picking a tiny, uncomplicated lock like the ones on these crates would have taken no time at all.
Commissioner Gordon smiled. “I’ll radio forensics to come in at once. Maybe the thief was careless enough to leave a fingerprint behind. In the meantime, Mrs. Golightley, I suggest you go home and try to relax.”
Without warning, Commissioner Gordon went from tough and incisive to charming and concerned. The combination was too much for Mrs. Golightley, who softened a bit as he steered her toward the door.
“Well, alright, but you’re sure you’ve got all your men searching for my little Whiskersoft?” She peered at him over her shoulder, brows drawn together.
“Yes, Ma’am. All my men. On the case. For your cat.” The irony was lost on Mrs. Golightley.
She gave them one last look and clicked away in her black heels, heading for the front of the building. The tension in the room deflated. Bill looked back and forth between the Commissioner and Batman, suddenly aware he was no longer needed.
“Well, then, I’ll take myself off too, unless you have any more questions?” He took a half-step toward the door.
The Commissioner opened his mouth, but Batman shook his head.
“He’s fine, Jim. He already gave a statement.”
Commissioner Gordon nodded. A wet slap behind them reminded the men that the janitor was still completing her rounds in the room.
“Let’s go where we can talk privately, Batman,” suggested the Commissioner.
They went back into the auditorium, where they could speak under cover of the scattered conversations of various cat owners around the room.
“Mrs. Golightley doesn’t care one whit about that cat, so long as it brings her money or prestige,” the Commissioner stated in disgust.
“Bill would agree with you. He thought the animal was getting depressed from lack of attention,” Batman murmured, his voice pitched below the bustling sounds around them.
“The trainer at the circus talked about how expensive his animals are, too. I suppose it’s a concern when we’re dealing with theft, but these are living things.” Commissioner Gordon sighed and shook his head.
“Jim, what with the monetary value of these cats and the cat-burglar techniques used to procure them, I think we have to name Catwoman as the main suspect. She has the skills necessary to do both jobs. She’s also got a nose for valuables. Stealing living animals seems a bit afield of her usual prey...”
The Commissioner pursed his lips. “Diamonds and jewelry, you mean? Yes, it does. But we’ve seen Gotham’s criminals escalate and take new directions before. All right, I’ll put out an APB on her.”
The Commissioner unsnapped the radio on his belt, but Batman placed a hand on his arm.
“Before you do that, do you mind if I try talking to her? She’s a criminal, but she’s generally non-violent. She’s helped me in the past when there was no other option. And she genuinely likes cats. I want to hear what she has to say for herself.”
“I can give you twenty-four hours, Batman,” the Commissioner agreed. “After that, if there are no other suspects, we really must move. Unpleasant owners aside, I have a duty to the law here.”
Batman nodded. “Understood, Jim. Thanks for letting me tag along this morning.”
Batman crushed his empty coffee cup and tossed it into a trash can next to the front door. He stepped out, ignoring the gasps of pedestrians on the sidewalk. Once he was clear of the building, he fired his grappling hook high overhead and swung away without a backward glance.
