Into the Abyss

Boy, it has been a clean minute since I've updated my Azur Lane progress, mostly because the content has been a trickle this year, but with the current Rerun Event, I felt obliged to do so. Seriously this year has been mad slim on stuff to do in my favorite WWII sim. As a KMS main, coming off a year which was straight up lousy with Kraut progress, I am a little… disappointed with the current offerings. I feel like it’s been that way for a while, actually. Like, I found the stagnation of the game to be pretty prominent last year but, again, I am heavily Iron Blooded so that’s probably just my bias. That’s not to say I haven’t gotten anything for my main Fleet over the last few months, just that I kind of wanted more. Still, there were other facets which have progress so I can’t be all that mad. But I kind of am.

Look, man, this Iron Blood drought is killing me. Like, we've had a few crumbs but that's it. Crumbs. Obviously, I've gobbled up what i could, which ain't much. The two P6 boats, one of which was a Decisive and the Confluence of Nothingness event. That's it. Man, i am STARVING over here! So much so that, when Friedrich Carl showed up on that Banner, i dove wholeheartedly into that sh*t. And, boy, did it cost. I went at that banner with round four hindered Wisdom Cubes. It literally took close to three three hundred of the f*ckers to finally pop the first, new, Kraut Girl in almost a year. Seriously, i popped SO many f*cking dupes of almost every other ship on the Banner before i finally scored Carl. That sh*t hurt my pockets, bad. Like, egregiously. She finally decided to appear, when i was at my wit's end, but I'm content about it. I ain't happy, but my main Fleet is still one hundred percent complete, so small victories. But, for real, Manjuu needs to drop some more KMS ships soon. I'm dying over here!

The Coldest Winter

The whole reason I am writing this thing, is to address the massive Ruskie mammoth in the room – the Abyssal Refrain Rerun. Once upon a time, long, long ago, i passed on this Event because i kind of didn’t give a sh*t about chasing another Fleet at the time. I was headlong in my Iron Blood quest so I missed out on a lot of ash*t back then. Shimakaze, New Jersey, and, prudent to this particular post, Kronshtadt. Tunnel vision, for sure. After I netted U-110 and caught up with the Iron Blood offerings, I set out on honing my Northern Parliament Fleet next. After the Germans, the Russians are my favorite Fleet based on aesthetic. By then, however, Abyssal Refrain was in the rear view and I missed out on, like, three of those ships, Kronshtadt being the most important. Not only was she a glaring hole in the puzzle that was my burgeoning SN Fleet, she was the last UR boat I needed, after claiming both Shimakaze and New Jersey on Rerun Lite events. Seeing her banner reappear, I absolutely made a run. The thing is, I was low on resources. Chasing after Friedrich Carl taxed my pockets hard. Fortunately, since this is a Rerun which I had kind of participated in before, I had Ship Building tickets. Ran through those real fast but it wasn’t enough. I only had around one hundred, fifty Wisdom Cubes and was sitting on the edge of my seat rolling for that UR sweetness. It only took three. Sixty Cubes and she popped. I FINALLY had EVERY natural UR ship (not Decisive) available! Yes, I've included Sovetsky Soyuz in that assertion I absolutely made out like a bandit during Snowrealm Peregrination. Here's my truth: I'm a religious LGBT+ person in rl - so I gobble up the opportunity to project onto potentially religious LGBT+ characters in fandom spaces . . . But I have not feasted this much, THIS WELL as I have when it comes to Interview with the Vampire.

There are so many layers to this show and I haven't even finished it yet, but I'm just over here feasting on the religious symbolism and imagery and SAINT LOUIS and I know I already ranted about the final arc of the first episode and haven't even gone into like two other points from just the first episodeeee.

I am going feral and I needed to rant about it on my blog for just a moment because I am over here living my best fandom experience to date because it's there, I'm not trying to make a feast out of crumbs and subtle nods - because it's rampant, and I am so inspired and I can't wait to draw more and write so much soon and just AHHHHHH -

tbh I expected ST/Eddie fandom to die / go into a sleeping mode™️ until s5 is released. However, seeing Eddie and Joe tag dead still makes me incredibly sad 😖 even though I knew it will happen 😭

Same. I knew that the lull was coming and is inevitable, but it still gives me the sadness. But like I said to this anon just now, the fandom will never really die as long as we're still here keeping the love alive (ugh I know how hokey that sounds hahaha).

I think I'm going to spend the long wait for S5 being happy for Joe's opportunities and gobbling up whatever crumbs he throws at us, and reading the fics that (hopefully) people keep writing. For me, writing them helps keep Eddie alive too.

And I plan to keep overanalyzing the show with anyone who will listen, haha!

I’m pleased to share that the May issue of Aphelion is up. It includes my poem, “Little Brown Changeling,” which is about our dearly departed Otter, who we miss so much. Thank you to editor Dan Hollifield and the rest of the Aphelion team.

Little Brown Changeling for Otter

I found a tiny creature in the vacant lot beside an abandoned hotel. I thought it was a kitten.  It was kitten-shaped and mewing. I searched the dry July weeds for a mother cat or littermates

but found none. The creature was all alone, so I took it home. Having no money for a veterinarian, I asked a farmer friend with a colony of barn cats to come have a look. She agreed that it was, indeed,

kitten-shaped. No mites, no fleas, just a little brown bag of bones, barely three weeks old, fur brittle and falling out from lack of nutrition. I know now that she should have been bottle-fed. I know now that I did

literally everything wrong. All I had to feed her was dry kibble. I wetted it down to soften it for her milk teeth. She gobbled it all up and wanted more. When I could afford a vet, he agreed that she was definitely

kitten-shaped, and we scheduled an appointment to get her spayed. When she peed under my bed, I asked her not to do it again. She listened very seriously, nodded, and honored my wishes. Then, when I gave her

her first bath in the sink, her paws grew webbed and powerful, her fur grew sleek, her pipe cleaner tail thickened into one more suitable for aquatic propulsion, and just like that, she was a baby otter. We had all suspected she wasn't really a cat,

or if she was a cat, she was an absolutely singular feline. The other cats made it clear she was not of their ilk, and I will never forget how joyfully she splashed and frolicked in the water. For a time, her favorite form was a bat.

Around and around the apartment she sailed on brown wings, whipping around corners to startle us, tiny fangs glistening as she laughed. She never grew very big, five pounds for most of her life, but despite my meager ministrations,

our little foundling thrived, her fur becoming burnished and downy soft. Then came her owl phase, golden eyes blinking in the darkness, rotating her tiny bird head to smile at us. I still have a brown feather from those years.

When she was frightened, she would become a brown crab with a piecrust carapace, scuttling sideways, pincers clicking defensively, and when she was feeling guilty, she’d move in a strange, hump-backed shuffle, eyes paling to yellow,

a hyena. If you’d dropped her in a barrel full of regular crabs or a cackle of hyenas, I still would have known her. Her distinct vocalizations were always the same regardless of shape. She trilled and cooed

when she was happy, snorted and chuffed when she was annoyed, chittered to demand treats, and at night, she became a little brown dormouse, snoring in her blanket nest. I saw her become a rat,

a buzzard, a monkey, a raccoon, a salamander. Her body would lengthen itself into serpentine form, and we’d have a tiny dragon on our hands, belching tiny flames like a scaly brown Zippo. In the water, she liked to be

a mermaid, though more of the Fiji variety than HC Andersen, with her mashed-in face and sargasso hair. She was a sphinx, a fairy, an elf, a manticore, a banshee, a gargoyle, a squinty-eyed gremlin, a goblin, a Gizmo, a Gollum, the world’s smallest

Wookie, whatever the hell Grogu is, and Salicious B. Crumb. She was the rarest of beasts, and like all fantastic pets, the day came all too soon for our little brown changeling to leave us and go back to her realm for good.

One final transformation, one final conflagration, and in a little brown urn, we keep her phoenix ashes. Sometimes, I still hear her singing, and sometimes, she visits me in my dreams, and there, at last,

she shows me her true face.

Into the Abyss

Boy, it has been a clean minute since I've updated my Azur Lane progress, mostly because the content has been a trickle this year, but with the current Rerun Event, I felt obliged to do so. Seriously this year has been mad slim on stuff to do in my favorite WWII sim. As a KMS main, coming off a year which was straight up lousy with Kraut progress, I am a little… disappointed with the current offerings. I feel like it’s been that way for a while, actually. Like, I found the stagnation of the game to be pretty prominent last year but, again, I am heavily Iron Blooded so that’s probably just my bias. That’s not to say I haven’t gotten anything for my main Fleet over the last few months, just that I kind of wanted more. Still, there were other facets which have progress so I can’t be all that mad. But I kind of am.

Please, Sir, May I Have Some More

Look, man, this Iron Blood drought is killing me. Like, we've had a few crumbs but that's it. Crumbs. Obviously, I've gobbled up what i could, which ain't much. The two P6 boats, one of which was a Decisive and the Confluence of Nothingness event. That's it. Man, i am STARVING over here! So much so that, when Friedrich Carl showed up on that Banner, i dove wholeheartedly into that sh*t. And, boy, did it cost. I went at that banner with round four hindered Wisdom Cubes. It literally took close to three three hundred of the f*ckers to finally pop the first, new, Kraut Girl in almost a year. Seriously, i popped SO many f*cking dupes of almost every other ship on the Banner before i finally scored Carl. That sh*t hurt my pockets, bad. Like, egregiously. She finally decided to appear, when i was at my wit's end, but I'm content about it. I ain't happy, but my main Fleet is still one hundred percent complete, so small victories. But, for real, Manjuu needs to drop some more KMS ships soon. I'm dying over here!

The Coldest Winter

The whole reason I am writing this thing, is to address the massive Ruskie mammoth in the room – the Abyssal Refrain Rerun. Once upon a time, long, long ago, i passed on this Event because i kind of didn’t give a sh*t about chasing another Fleet at the time. I was headlong in my Iron Blood quest so I missed out on a lot of ash*t back then. Shimakaze, New Jersey, and, prudent to this particular post, Kronshtadt. Tunnel vision, for sure. After I netted U-110 and caught up with the Iron Blood offerings, I set out on honing my Northern Parliament Fleet next. After the Germans, the Russians are my favorite Fleet based on aesthetic. By then, however, Abyssal Refrain was in the rear view and I missed out on, like, three of those ships, Kronshtadt being the most important. Not only was she a glaring hole in the puzzle that was my burgeoning SN Fleet, she was the last UR boat I needed, after claiming both Shimakaze and New Jersey on Rerun Lite events. Seeing her banner reappear, I absolutely made a run. The thing is, I was low on resources. Chasing after Friedrich Carl taxed my pockets hard. Fortunately, since this is a Rerun which I had kind of participated in before, I had Ship Building tickets. Ran through those real fast but it wasn’t enough. I only had around one hundred, fifty Wisdom Cubes and was sitting on the edge of my seat rolling for that UR sweetness. It only took three. Sixty Cubes and she popped. I FINALLY had EVERY natural UR ship (not Decisive) available! Yes, I've included Sovetsky Soyuz in that assertion I absolutely made out like a bandit during Snowrealm Peregrination. I hate myself for feeling that way, but you do. You hover around me as I do things or obtain things for myself, hoping to get a bite. If I give you a little, and I always do because you look so pitiful, you take more than you are owed and I’m left with crumbs.

A friend I haven’t seen in YEARS bakes me homemade breads before leaving for another year and I share with my family for dinner, have one single slice, you have at least three and gobble up the last pieces behind my back.

I buy and bake us cookies; if we all get 4, I get 3 and you get 5.

I spend $100 taking us out to the movies and you say we should do it again next month for a film you want to see—and who would be driving, paying?

It wouldn’t bother me quite so much if you reciprocated even a tiny bit. If you bothered to write “happy birthday” on a card once in a while instead of only coming out to eat someone else’s birthday cake.

M and I finally get a weekend (without the smelly dog) to watch something on the big tv together after the end of an incredibly difficult week, a moment of victory, and now you’re here because you heard me start up the oven, sitting in the chair I always do during these rare kinds of weekends.
