Road to RPm: How to be a BLEPP Passer

The Board Licensure Examination for Psychologists and Psychometricians (BLEPP) started in 2014. It’s safe to say that this is one of the relatively new national exams in the Philippines.

Through the years, only more or less half of the total number of takers are successful in passing the Psychometrician board exams. Here are the results:

2014 - 1,290 out of 3,283

2015 - 2,061 out of 4,466

2016- 3,690 out of 7,312

2017- 4,957 out of 8,701

2018 - 4,035 out of 8,453

I placed these numbers not to scare future takers. I just want everyone to have an idea on how tough the exam is. So you can get the picture, the board exam is not easy as it seems.

I passed BLEPP 2018. For someone who is in the helping profession, I would want to extend my knowledge and help fellow Psychology majors who would want to take the Psychometrician licensure exam.

Knowing that you are here, searching for tips on how you can attain your goal of being an RPm too says a lot about your determination. Keep that up and I’m pretty sure your name will be on the list of passers too!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs):

1. What are the subjects included in the Psychometrician Board Exam?

The Psychometrician board exam is composed of four (4) subjects namely, Psychological Assessment (40%), Theories of Personality (20%), Abnormal Psychology (20%), and Industrial Psychology (20%). However, there are news that additional subjects will be added in future examinations. This isn’t confirmed yet for BLEPP 2019 so you can calm down a bit. Just a bit.

2. What is the passing grade in order to become licensed?

You need to attain a general average of at least seventy-five percent (75%) for all subjects, with no grade lower than sixty percent (60%) in any of the subjects.

However, there is what we call a conditional passer. These are the examinees who attain an average of 75% but they have a grade lower than 60% in any of the four subjects. What's the catch? Conditional passers may retake the subject(s) within the next two years and they must obtain a grade of at least 75% in order to pass the licensure exam.

But of course, that’s not THE GOAL. Aim to completely pass all subjects and become a board passer. If you can, go the extra mile and even top the board exams!

MY TIPS ON HOW TO PASS THE PSYCHOMETRICIAN BOARD EXAM:

Disclaimer: These tips helped me a lot but it doesn’t mean that it will certainly work on you too. It will still depend on your personal preference and your learning style.

1. Have a study schedule and STICK TO IT.

Set a goal. Since there are four subjects, I allotted at least one month per subject. I started reviewing as early as June 2018 so I had ample time to review. By October 2018, I had around a month for a refresher and to reread.

I had daily and weekly goals to meet. This helped me a lot because I wasn’t only organized with my review but it helped me to feel accomplished once I see my progress on paper. It felt great to tick off topics on my to-do list. It was reassuring for me.

What if you don’t meet your goal? Of course there will be days when it’s harder to study, especially during the rainy season. There are days when you’ll be distracted and you couldn’t focus. Don’t be afraid to adjust your schedule as needed. But refrain from always doing this and putting off your goals for tomorrow. We all know that each hour of studying matters! “Bukas na lang” and having a lot of excuses won’t help you pass the board exam. Make sure to make up for your backlogs and delays.

It’s better to study in advance than to cram. Besides, you will feel more confident when October comes. Imagine if you are still halfway through the coverage and it’s already October first. I swear, that will be terrifying! SO STUDY IN ADVANCE.

2. Fix your body clock.

On the day of the board exam, you will need to wake up VERY EARLY. If you are nocturnal and you are more productive at night, you will have a hard time to focus during the board exam if you do not fix your body clock. Trust me, I’m a night owl as well.

Why is this important? If you stay up all night studying, your body will be used to waking up late and feeling sluggish during the afternoon. It will be hard to wake up and arrive on time for the exam. For me, it was a challenge to train my mind to be ready for the first exam at 8am and also make sure to fight that after-lunch-siesta sleepiness for the afternoon exam at 1pm.

So my tip is to fix your body clock. While reviewing, I woke up as early as 5am. My study schedule was from 6 in the morning up until 8 in the evening only (breaks included of course!) But it’s still up to you, whatever works for you. That’s just my study tip.

3. Reward yourself!

As mentioned, I only studied for around 12 hours. After a day’s worth of studying, I make sure to reward myself IF I FINISH MY DAILY GOAL OR TARGET. I watch my favorite tv show to unwind or eat my favorite comfort food or go out for a drive and get milktea.

This is important too. Remember that too much of something is always bad. Rewarding yourself will keep you sane, make you feel motivated to accomplish your review goals, and to of course, free your mind of the fears and doubts!!!

4. Choose only one to two reference books per subject.

There are a lot of books available that would help you, but it will be too overwhelming if you study too much books per subject. I will list down below the books that helped me throughout my review.

Psychological Assessment and Theory by Kaplan & Saccuzzo

Psychological Testing and Assessment by Cohen & Swerdlik

Abnormal Psychology: An Integrative Approach by Barlow & Durand

Theories of Personality by Feist & Feist

Industrial and Organizational Psychology by Aamodt

Sikolohiyang Pilipino by Pe-Pua

These were the main materials that I used. I finished these books from cover to cover. These books were recommended by the lecturers in the review center that I enrolled in, RGO.

I also used some of the powerpoints that our lecturers provided as well as the review booklets and drills that were given to us.

5. Enrolling in a review center or self-study?

It’s a case to case basis. Remember that not everyone who enrolled in the review center passed the BLEPP! Enrolling in a review center is not a ticket to those three letters! I would like to believe that this greatly depends on you. Sure, enrolling in a review center has its advantages. You’ll have test drills and review materials. Some lecturers are also kind enough to give a copy of their powerpoint presentations. You’ll also be motivated to study because of a supportive community of fellow Psychology students, review center staff, and your mentors.

But there’s a downside. It was honestly overwhelming and draining to sit from morning til the afternoon, from 8am to 5pm. For someone with a short attention span like me, after two hours, I was honestly zoning out already. It’s hard to pay attention the whole day for lectures.

Another downside is that you will feel pressured, especially when you see your friends’ progress with the review, reading, and results in the test drills. You MIGHT compare where you are and what you’ve accomplished, which leads me to another tip.

6. FOCUS ON YOURSELF but surround yourself with positive people and have a support system!

COMPETE WITH NO ONE ELSE BUT YOURSELF. Don’t compare your progress with anyone else’s. Trust your pace and focus on your own review. It will cause you additional pressure if you compare with the people around you.

Don’t hangout with those with negative vibes. “Hala babagsak ata ako.” “Ako rin.” Remember, our mind is a very powerful place. Feed it with the right fuel. Stay with people who will motivate you and who will not bring you down.

7. Think positive. Be optimistic!

I’m not gonna lie. My BLEPP journey was not easy. There were nights when I felt like giving up. I also doubted myself if I will make it. I shed a lot of tears during that five months of review. My mantra all throughout is: “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.”

I didn’t take the exam with the goal of just passing. I wanted to have decent results, to top the board exams if I can. I didn’t have a mindset that’s mediocre, similar to this: “Kapag pumasa ako edi good, kung hindi okay lang.” Why is that, you ask? Because I want to pass the exam. If I give myself the assurance that it’s okay for me to fail, even if in the back of my mind that’s not my goal, and that’s not what I want to achieve, the universe won’t pave a path towards my success. Law of attraction!

So set that goal, claim it. You will pass and all your actions, thoughts, and everything else will be circling around your dream of being an RPm. Believe that you can and you are halfway there.

8. Know your learning style or what works best for you.

In my case, I’m a visual learner. So the use of flashcards (i made my own using index cards), writing down key words, drawing to understand certain concepts, and reading while using colorful highlighters really helped me!

9. Believe in yourself and don’t listen to your demons!

Your motivation will wear out at some point. You will start to doubt yourself. You will begin to question why you wanted to take the exam in the first place. You will feel like you will fail. These are just some facts.

Don’t be afraid. Just pray, trust in the Lord, and His plans. So what if you don’t make it? What are you afraid of? Being judged by others? Being reprimanded? Remember, you can always take the exam again. Passing on your first or second, or third take won’t really matter. What will truly matter is what you do with your license. Just strive, do your best, and believe that you will become an RPm.

10. Apps that helped me.

Forest - The first app that I used is called Forest. It helped me to stay away from social media and to get rid of distractions! It’s also for a good cause because you can plant REAL TREES once you get a certain amount of coins. Stay productive. Help Mother Earth as well.

Tide - This app helped me to stay calm. The “breathe” option where it guides me to take deep breathes was effective in letting go of my anxious feelings! The “sleep” option helped me to fall asleep faster at night when I need to doze off already and it gave me good sleep because of the relaxing music that the app has. Also, the alarm that this app has helped me not to wake up feeling shocked (unlike the usual alarms in our phones!) The alarm increases in volume so you won’t wake up feeling so surprised because of the loud, nerve-wracking alarms. I hope you got what I was trying to say. Haha!

Headspace - Once I get up every morning, I allot a few minutes to meditate and clear my mind. So I can be ready for an exhausting day of reviewing. It also helped me to think more positively and to get rid of my fears, doubts, and whatnot!

Spotify - Studying with music really helped me remember things better and to stay focused. I highly recommend the Deep Focus playlist on Spotify! If all else fails, listen to Oceans by Hillsong and other Christian songs.

11. On the day of the exam:

Make sure you bring everything you need! (Especially your pencils and NOA)

Bring a jacket.

Make sure that your scantron won’t get crumpled, WET, or tampered!!! PROTECT YOUR ANSWER SHEET AT ALL COSTS. Keep it neat and tidy.

Manage your time well especially for Psych Assessment.

Make sure not to spill your drinks. I brought water and coffee (in case i feel sleepy) and drink away from your paper.

You may use the questionnaires as scratch papers. You can mark and write on them.

Make sure to READ THE QUESTIONS CAREFULLY. Some questions are meant to be confusing. Make sure that you know what they are asking for! (Be aware of the double negatives and look out for the words like “except”, “all but one” etc.

When in doubt, stick to the basics. Go back to the roots and basics of Psychology.

It’s better if you bring food to eat. Imagine that there will be thousands of takers. There will be long lines in the nearby restaurants.

Use your lunch break to rest. Don’t talk to your friends and discuss answers! It might ruin your confidence.

It won’t hurt to follow some superstitious beliefs! What’s there to lose right? I wore red underwear. I entered the room with my right foot first. I broke one pencil (donated the others) after the last exam and I never looked back on my seat once I passed my paper! But of course, your success won’t really be based on these but it gave me some sense of comfort and extra boost of luck, I guess.

PRAY. The Lord is with you. Trust His plans and remember that he answers prayers only with three ways: Yes, Not Yet, and I have something better in mind. Stand firm in faith.

12. After the exam, wait patiently.

I know it will be the most anxious-filled days. You will think that your nervousness will be gone after taking the exam but no. Your anxiety will still be through the roof! Remember to pray. Know that you did what you can. Be proud of yourself because months of studying wasn’t easy. Be proud of yourself too because not EVERYONE had enough courage to even try to take the board exam and that alone is already an achievement.

Here are the completed fan fics that were submitted to us for day 1 of SessKag Fandom Appreciaton Week 2019!

Lord Charming by forthright

Rating: T

Summary: CU. More than Sesshoumaru’s pride took a blow when he lost his arm. He’s in a delicate position… and desperate enough to seek the advice of a self-proclaimed expert. A clumsy romantic adventure told in 100-word snippets.

Why @animehusbandno1 recs it: BEST Sesshoumaru characterization ever! In fact all characters are incredibly well written and I love the insights into the Youkai court of Sesshoumaru’s mother. It’s an epic tale of 800 chapters with 100 words each and every single one is a gem. If you haven’t read it yet, I beg of you go and READ IT PLEASE! I’ve lost count how many times I’ve reread it over the years and it’s the one fic that made me fall so hard for Sesskag that I shall never get out of it again.

Summary: Strength is not determined by what you are. Love can be both a strength and a weakness. A cold youkai lord gets a lesson in love from a big-hearted miko.

Why sesshomarupatrick recs it: This fan fiction is about our stoic, legal demon lord learning the definition of love from (soon-to-be) his priestess. This is a one-shot, but it’s a very lovely and touching fiction, so I really thought I’d recommend this fan fiction if the Awards were opened again!

Why VS recs it:

This is the very first SessKag fic I have read and until now the fic I have reread the most! Kagome is travelling to different points in the past, meeting not only InuPapa but Sesshoumaru at different points in his life too. It is hard to find a good fic where Sesshoumaru doesn’t stay somewhat flat as a person. ShadowsWeaver1 did not only give Sesshoumaru an actual personality with many sides, but did so with Sesshoumaru at different ages too!!! And for that they have earned my respect and my love. A must read for any SessKag fan!

Why @stormielikeweather recs it: This Fic is one of the first SessKag fics I really fell in love with. At the time the concept was unique, and the story is written beautifully.

Summary: On Halloween, Kagome decides to dress as her utter opposite. Of course, she never expected to run into him.

Why @teaandcrumpets recs it: Post-canon fic + slowwww burn. Some of the more emotional bits hurt my heart- like had me in actual physical pain- until they were resolved, that’s how good the writing is. Also I love the characterization of everyone, and the plot/romance feels very natural and realistic.

A secret that made her lethal and a bit unstable.

Why VS recs it: In this one Sesshoumaru becomes Kagome’s light. She takes the role of the unstable, badass assassin. Warning: A somewhat happy ending. Absolute refreshing and yay to strong Kagome!

Intro

You know sometimes I like to challenge myself.

How to Play

This reading challenge consists of 3 sections. Fantasy, Sci-Fi and General for a total of 52 prompts which comes down to about 1 book a week.

You can do 1, 2 or all 3 sections.

With each section you are allowed 1 Double-Up. Double-Up means you can use 1 book for 2 prompts. Preferred is not to at all but if for some reason you are struggling with time or a prompt you can.

In the general sections you can use both fantasy and sci-fi books but not other genres.

Graphic novels, comics, audiobooks and novella’s are allowed. It is all reading in my book.

Rereads count.

You can move the books around throughout the year if things fit better elsewhere and all.

You can step into this reading challenge at any point. I’m starting it in January 2019 but in reality this is a reading challenge you can fit for yourself in anyway you like. If you want to start in May and end April the year after, that is totally fine.

in all honesty? i do tend to go over certain sentences over and over because of how particular i am 😭 but i’ll try my best to help you! this is what i do:

start out by just dUMPING all the ideas that come up in your head as soon as they come to mind (they are called headcanons after all HAHA)

you can worry about refinement after you’re happy you’ve got all your ideas out!

after you’ve done that, return to your first bullet point/idea and refine it more. turn them into better sentences with a lil more detail, and add more ideas to expand on that point if needed!

do this gradually for each bullet point/idea

once you’ve expanded and added detail to each one, go back to the start and reread everything

are you satisfied with all the points? if not, make tweaks as you go along! have more ideas that came to mind that you want to add? then add them in!

(this process just repeats tbh until you feel satisfied with everything)

but remember that writing should be fun most importantly! if you’re feeling too tired then make sure to take breaks in between, and come back once you’re more rested- never push yourself cause that can ruin your motivation :)

headcanons don’t have to be in great detail either, that’s why i love writing them! they’re just silly little ideas that i like to jot down and expand on

Jenn Recommends: Fantasy

All right, kids; it’s that time again. Time for me to babble on for an obnoxiously long time about books I have read and adored, and time for you to just shut the fuck up and take all my advice, because I have great taste.

Since this recommendation list concerns fantasy, all of the following books are actually part of a series, because it is illegal for fantasy authors to write standalone novels: they will be publicly executed for devoting anything less than 3,000 pages to Timmy’s sword and stones. You know this is true because you just read it on the internet.

If You Like: Political intrigue, really hot people, + everyone and their brother being canonically gay as fuck.

Read: The Kushiel’s Legacy series by Jacqueline Carey.

This series starts with Kushiel’s Dart, and there are actually two trilogies worth reading in this world: Phedre’s (the first trilogy) and Imriel’s (the second, which I may like even better). We do not talk about the third trilogy. In this write-up, I’m just going to talk about the first trilogy, but if you enjoy it, I definitely encourage you to read the next three books.

Phèdre nó Delaunay is a courtesan who was born with a scarlet mote in her left eye--a mark of the god to let others know that she’s into really kinky shit. You cannot spank this bitch hard enough. As a child she is sold into indentured servitude, and bought by a man who recognizes the mote in her eye for what it is and what it signifies--namely, that people who sexually enjoy having the ever-loving fuck beat out of them are pretty much up for anything, which means she will make a great spy.

So that is what she is trained in--not just the arts of the bedroom, but the arts of overhearing everything meant for non-State-approved ears. Of course because this is a novel and something has to happen in it, she stumbles upon a plot against the throne that gets a lot of people stabbed multiple times and throws her and her hapless goddammit-this-is-my-first-real-assignment bodyguard into a Perilous Journey that spans Many Lands.

Two things I really love about this series: the world building and the casual approach to homosexuality.

The various different countries are obviously based heavily upon European history and lore, but she’s done enough research to really flesh them out. We don’t just have a few generic descriptions here and there of vaguely European geography, but actual religions and languages and histories which are more than just given a hasty, passing mention to conjure the illusion that the world is more tangible than it actually is: you can taste and touch and hear Terre d’Ange.

As for the casual homosexuality: the main pairing is hetero, but Phedre takes several female lovers, because in Terre d’Ange, the one rule by which everyone must abide is ‘Love as thou wilt’. No one is really straight or gay; sexuality isn’t really a thing, labels aren’t a thing; people bone who they bone and nobody bats an eye. Kind of like Ancient Greece, till it came time for you to stop porking Archimedes during oily wrestling sessions and churn out a couple of brats. Sex work in this world is also considered in the service of the goddess, and those engaged in it are bestowing a blessing on their customers; it is an honorable and profitable line of work.

I honestly could not put these books down. I have two copies of the third book in this trilogy because I ordered it online while halfway through the second, then promptly panicked when I realized it wouldn’t arrive in time for me to immediately begin the third as soon as I finished the second novel. I actually drove an hour and a half to the nearest Barnes and Noble just so I didn’t have to wait two agonizing days for the next book to arrive. The writing can be a little heavy-handed (think purple euphemisms for a man’s steely pleasure wand, etc.), but overall it’s gripping and lush and I could barely stop reading long enough to take bathroom breaks.

If You Like: Bleak stories where probably nobody is ever going to get anything more than a brief glimpse of happiness before it’s cruelly torn away from them and legitimately creepy monsters.

Read: The Banned and the Banished series by James Clemens.

This series on the surface is your fairly generic Evil Dark Lord vs. Savior Newly Awakened To Their Powers. Elena is a thirteen-year-old girl who has just been visited for the very first time by the dreaded Aunt Flo. With puberty comes the blossoming of new powers: a red hand that shoots a lot of fire out of it, a power I would’t mind having while trying to navigate a bunch of idiot-inflicted traffic. Over the course of the five books in the series, she picks up her Adventure Party and they sally forth to do battle with the Dark Lord’s minions (of which there are a metric fuck ton, in scientific terms). Some parts begin to feel a little monster-of-the-week, as the protagonists barely have time to take a breath in between waves of tentacly evil.

So why I am I recommending this series? Because Clemens is not content with just scattering some generic tropes around the page and calling it good: he wants you to go, “What the FUCK, dude??”. A lot. This is probably the only book in which you will encounter a woman letting a bunch of spiders crawl into her vagina. Or later giving birth to those spiders, which have, upon the touch of the Dark Lord, transformed into a monster that smells like dead baby and eats people’s faces. I recently came across this series in Russian and have been rereading it as a 31-year-old adult, and there are scenes which even now thoroughly traumatize me; it really explains why I am the way I am, since I first read the beginning books when I was only 11-12.

This series is surprisingly hard to put down; I suppose it’s because you are compelled (or at least I am) to find out what the hell kind of nasty thing is next going to emerge from the forest and inspire you to check under your bed at night even though you’re a goddamn adult. This series is not for the faint of heart, obviously. But if you like dark fantasy, and you’re into the idea of reading something that on the surface seems a pretty standard fantasy tale before it suddenly starts hurling vagina spiders all up your business, check it out. Also, if you’ve read any of my work and you’d like to know just what the fuck is wrong with me, I believe this series can throw a little light on that.

If You Like: A protagonist who won’t take your shit but also is allowed to be emotionally vulnerable, Chinese history, detailed military campaigns.

Read: The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang.

Rin, a war orphan raised by shitty foster parents in a backwoods village, is accepted into a prestigious military academy where pretty much everyone, teachers included, hates her because she’s a peasant and this school is for the sons of rich people, goddammit. Rin is talented in the nearly lost art of shamanism because she’s the main character of a fantasy novel, and it is only her newly-found powers that have a chance of halting the advance of the Federation as they march upon the Nikara Empire, intent on conquering (and graphically torture murdering) everything in its path. On the flip side: her powers have also been known to turn literally all their wielders into raging loonies who have to be imprisoned for the good of everyone.

My ignorance of Chinese history is absolute, so I’ve no idea where the author (herself Chinese, and an historian, I believe) is pulling from in order to build the foundations of her world, but it’s obvious she has done a lot of research and painstakingly agonized over every little detail. It’s nice to finally step away from the usual Euro-centric world of much Western fantasy, and into one so fully fleshed-out.

This story actually reminds me in some ways of Mulan: the unlikely protagonist bests nearly everyone in all of her training--but only because she works three times harder than anyone else, and no one particularly admires her for it, saving her from Mary Suedom. She’s intelligent and determined, but nothing comes easily (especially when one of your masters is more than a little unhinged). She has exactly one friend, and spends most of her time trying to read her way to a better martial artist.

This is not, however, a school story; and though the characters are 16-17 when they first enter the academy, it is not a YA story either. It is a story about war, and the author has no interests in presenting war as anything other than it is: revolting, traumatizing, horrific. There are some very graphic depictions of violence, so if you do not have the stomach for that, this is not the book for you. Neither massacres nor first kills are glossed over; everything is presented exactly as it looks, smells, feels.

Because life is never one long angst-ridden slog, however, and there was always something, before war, there are moments of legit humor; I actually laughed out loud at several lines. And that leads me to something else the author does very well: dialogue. Much dialogue is an excuse for the author to sound worldly, wise--poetic. It also often hardly sounds like human speech. Real humans, even articulate, intelligent humans, do not shit a fucking Keats verse every time they open their mouths. In The Poppy War, people, wonder of wonders, actually sound like people; perhaps even more notable: teenagers sound like teenagers.

Stylistically, this book is utilitarian; I won’t be highlighting any phrases because they’ve left me awestruck. But it is not lightweight fantasy; the main characters wield terrifying powers with immense consequences. They are mangled, tortured, killed; some of them are drug addicts because only in opium can they find a momentary release from what they have survived. It’s a hold-onto-your-balls-kids kind of story. This is the first novel in a purported trilogy, and I will definitely be keeping an eye out for the rest of the series.

I’m rereading some snippets of a Yashahime fixit fic idea I’ve been playing with and I genuinely think I’m funny:

“Rin. You’re bleeding.”

“What?” Rin asked, checking her elbows and body for any signs of the blood that Lord Sesshomaru could smell, “Where?”

He already turned on his heel and was marching out of their home as Rin pulled up the bottom of her kosode to her midthigh just in time to see a pale drop of blood run down the inside of her leg.

“Oh.”

“Oh!” Jaken responded with a bit more excitement than her.

She knew what this meant and if Lord Sesshomaru knew about it, then he was probably getting one of the ladies from the village to help Rin take care of it. This was the first time she’s ever bled before and she was certain a great Lord such as himself had better things to do than to help her figure out how to deal with her monthlies.

Kagome and Sango had talked to her about expecting it soon and that would explain the ache she was feeling in her gut earlier that morning.

“You’re becoming a young woman, Rin,” Master Jaken proclaimed tearfully before smacking Rin’s hand as she moved to wiggle out of her dirty clothes (He’d seen her naked before. He did help raise her afterall). “But you need to behave like one! No man of respect will want to marry a woman who behaves like a wild animal!”

She mulled that over, rubbing at the spot on her wrist that he slapped with his tiny clawed hands, “Well then...I’ll marry Lord Sesshomaru,” She declared seriously despite the fact that she was joking.

“WHAT?! No! Lord Sesshomaru is much too old for you!” Jaken squealed.

“Then I’ll wait until I’m Lady Kaede’s age and marry him then!”

“You will still be far too young!” Jaken proclaimed and Rin couldn’t help but laugh at how haughty he was getting, earning another good smack to the wrist.

2017 reading wrap-up

I don’t normally do this, but I figured that since this year was the first year I kept track of the books I read and also set a specific goal (1/3 books by authors of color), I thought it could be interesting to see what I read in 2017. And yeah, this is a little late but I didn’t have laptop over Christmas break so *shrug*.

I read 186 books total, with 73 being by authors of color. (That’s actually 11 more books than I needed to read, so yay for being an overachiever.) I think having a specific number to aim for helped me to diversify my reading and push me to read things I wouldn’t normally have read and I want to continue doing that. Of those 186 books, 108 had a person of color as a pov character and 61 had a LGBTQIAP+ main character. I think I’ll try to focus on reading more books with good disability representation next year because I only read 23 books with a disabled main character (not counting thrillers that used mental health as an an unreliable narrator plot twist because ugh).

I read mostly the same number of books (between 9-20) each month during school or summer, which surprised me since I normally think of myself as reading more during vacations. Also, I read 9 books when I should have been doing NaNoWriMo, which might explain why I didn’t finish..

Penthesilea [20/20]

Chapter Summary: Sasuke stares at Sakura, feeling somewhat inadequate beside her; she has undergone such an important change, and yet she is clearly the same woman he was first drawn to. Where it was once so easy to talk to her, now he finds himself at a loss for words.

Chapter Beta: None besides my own eyes. I’ll go through the spellchecker at some other point. I’m just kind of eager to get this finished. So don’t be surprised if you come back in a week or two to reread (assuming you intend to reread) and find a bunch of grammar stuff changed.

“And it will go down in history that the infamous warlord, Uchiha Sasuke, survived single combat with the jinchuriki Uzumaki Naruto…only to faint during peace talks at the thought of impending fatherhood,” Kakashi intones with false solemnity.

He is far more amused than is appropriate.

Or necessary.

The members of the main families crowd together in a smaller tent, away from the eyes of their vassals and other witnesses. Based on what Naruto told him upon his waking (while mocking him with unconcealed glee), they have been given an hour’s grace while the main families try to decide how to come to terms with the news Sakura has brought them, and while Mifune attempts to calm the rest of the clans.

That’s easier for some than others.

“What is the meaning of this?” Hyūga Hiashi demands, glaring thunderously down at Sasuke. “Is this some plot to undermine the agreements we have made?”

As if the man didn’t abscond with his entire clan, Sasuke can’t help thinking. There is a dim, almost manic hint of amusement to the notion.

“I would say those agreements were null and voided when I first came here,” Hinata speaks up, quietly but firmly. “This only furthers our need for new accords.”

“Daughter –”

“Hey, it might not even be yours,” Suigetsu suggests, peering over Sasuke’s shoulder to stare at the baby.

“What the hell’s that supposed to mean?” Naruto interrupts, obviously insulted and defensive on Sakura’s behalf.

“Are you seriously that blind?” his redheaded cousin demands, uncaring of protocol as she slaps Suigetsu upside the head. His head explodes into a spray of water.

“Hey!”

Sakura motions for them all to be quiet, and in a crisp voice says, “I don’t appreciate the insinuation. If there are serious questions about her parentage, a simple blood test would –”

“No.”

Everyone pauses and glances at Sasuke, as this is the first time he has spoken since he returned to consciousness.

“There is no question,” he continues, in a stronger tone. “Sakura would not lie about this. Especially after everything. Besides, this child…” His gaze falls upon the infant again, and he swallows thickly. “She has inherited my eyes.”

This appears to effectively silence everyone for a moment, before another round of questions and demands starts up, far too many to answer all at once. Sasuke feels more uncomfortable at this attention than he was earlier, when he was facing possible imprisonment or exile.

Which I might still be, he thinks dimly.

Sakura is trying to answer questions and soothe insulted egos and pacify demands about their affair, while Naruto and Kakashi try to help. Words like ‘treason’, ‘dishonour’ and ‘collusion’ are thrown about. Sasuke knows he should be speaking up, but his brain appears to have stalled as he gazes upon the baby.

Sarada…

It’s eventually Suigetsu and Obito who cut through the tension of the assembly with their usual blunt disregard for propriety.

“So no one else is gonna ask the obvious question?” the surviving Hosuki clansman asks, glancing between Sasuke and Sakura.

“You mean how the hell during this whole war that’s been going on, they found time to f—” Obito begins, but Rin slaps her hand over his mouth.

Sasuke feels an uncomfortable warmth in the back of his neck and Sakura’s is overwhelmed by a coughing fit.

“The how and the why are not what should concern us just now,” Kakashi says gravely, though his eyes still gleam with amusement. “The details can be explained later. What concerns us now is the existance of this child, an heir to the Senju and the Uchiha. I’d think we can all agree that this is a more solid promise of peace than any piece of paper, no matter what circumstances brought it about?”

“Besides, Sasuke still needs time to process,” Naruto sniggers.

Sasuke glares at him, wondering if it’s worth risking a harsher punishment than he’s already in for to punch the man.

In the background, the lull Sasuke noticed in the commotion from the main tent has faded away as well. Mifune has returned, and approaches Sakura.

“My lady, the people are demanding answers, and if they don’t get them some are threatening to leave,” he tells her. “Whatever…story you need to set straight, do it fast.”

Sakura makes a face. “There is no story. Just the truth.”

Sasuke catches the by-play, but still feels too disoriented to react to it; he is trying to force his brain to think strategically once again. His difficulty is compounded by the unwavering attention from the other people in the tent.

Sakura notices, and then says to Mifune, “If we might have a moment of privacy?”

“I would not advise it,” Mifune says. “The other clans are already worried about back room dealings between clans, but between the two belligerents—especially considering the serious circumstances of Uchiha-sama…”

“This not a meeting of two clans, but of two parents discussing their daughter,” she retorts firmly, and then levels a challenging gaze toward the head of the Hyūga. “Surely you would understand that, my lord?”

Hiashi appears to struggle with something a moment, but when Hinata lays a hand on his arm, he relaxes.

“Very well,” he mutters. “We will all await you in the main assembly. Soon, I hope.”

He leaves, and is slowly followed by the others. Naruto beams at them both as he leaves, while Kakashi offers a wink of encouragement on his way out.

And then they are alone for the first time in months.

But Mifune is right, and time is of the essence.

“The truth?” Sasuke prompts tightly, not knowing where else to start.

Sakura nods, and motions for him to sit with her. She kneels down into seiza, adjusting her hold on the infant. A beat later, Sasuke joins her, sitting with his knees scant inches from hers and staring at her expectantly.

“Sarada is three months old,” she tells him matter-of-factly. The words would be utter nonsense to someone else, but to Sasuke they only prompt him to count backwards.

A year ago.

A year ago it would have been possible, because they were still—

Memory hits him then – an encounter, one that wasn’t their last, but certainly one of the most memorable.

“Will anyone else ever make you feel like this? Answer me, Sakura.”

“No!”

“No what?”

“No one else…no one else will…fuck, Sasuke, please!”

His eyes widen, his ears and neck burning at the memory; Sakura nods, her own cheeks turning red. “Yes. I think that’s when it happened. There’s always a small chance of contraception failing, but I never thought we would fall into that percentage.” She snorts in an undignified way. “I suppose I should have, considering the circumstances of our entire relationship.”

Sasuke has no idea what to say to this, and waits for her to continue.

“I suspected after we healed your brother…and by the time I knew for sure I wasn’t…I didn’t know how to tell you. Everything was so precarious, and I was worried it would negatively influence the peace we were trying to build,” she says. “By the time I decided to tell you and figure everything out afterward…it was that horrible day when Itachi…” Sakura trails off, struggling here, and Sasuke is reminded of the fact that she was quite fond of his brother – not only as her patient but as a friend. She clears her throat and goes on. “I was just about to, when –”

“Danzō attacked,” he finishes, eyes widening as he remembers. His lungs feel like they’re constricting.

“Yes.”

“You were…that day…” his mouth goes dry. “You could have been killed – you almost were killed. Both of you, if not for…”

“Itachi,” she agrees. “I believe that’s why he threw himself in front of me.”

“He knew?” Sasuke chokes.

Sakura’s expression is sad. “Yes. How, I have no idea. I didn’t tell him anything, I wasn’t even showing physical symptoms then, but he…he suspected. Or maybe he hoped, because when he asked – like it was a joke - but I said I was…he looked like he expected it.”

Sasuke shakes his head, unsurprised; somehow, Itachi always seemed to know everything that was going on. If he weren’t a man guided by logic, Sasuke would think his brother had mystical abilities.

“He wanted to meet her so badly,” Sakura tells him in a voice barely above a whisper. “He wanted you to be happy. And he knew what she would mean to…to everyone.”

Sasuke can’t find the right words to reply to this.

“You should have told me,” Sasuke tells her, his voice inexplicably hoarse. “If you had told me –”

“Would you have believed me?” she challenges quietly. “If I appeared before you, heavy with child, saying it was yours? In your midframe, and without seeing her for yourself, what would have happened?”

He stares blankly at her, and immediately an image presents itself to him, something so horrible he can’t help pressing the back of his hand to his mouth lest he vomit.

He probably would have accused her of infidelity and run her through with his blade; or worse, shoves a chidori through her heart.

“I tried,” she admits. “Even when you were so far gone, when you accused me of – I hoped, but – but you weren’t listening.”

Sasuke can’t repress his own shudder, as his brain provides him with detailed memories of every encounter they had in the past year. Of her full-cheeked, healthy glow that he attributed to her healing abilities, of the winter cloak that hid her growing belly, and her total absence from the battlefield in the last few months –

It’s juxtaposed with his crystal-clear memories of each and every time he put her in harms way, of the times they fought beside one another—and against one another. When she forced herself to complete Itachi’s healing, when she fought Danzō’s Susanoo, when he tried to destroy her, the way her body always seemed to move to protect her centre—

A horrifying realisation hits him.

“You knew that day. I placed you in that genjutsu, and I…”

She too shivers at the memory. “We were so lucky that Kakashi was there.”

Sasuke feels like he can’t breathe, his heart pounding erratically in his ears and a pain creeping through his chest that isn’t entirely physical. It’s like someone is digging through his ribcage and heart with a dull blade, his stomach pulling tight. Bile rises in his throat as the inescapable truth hits him like a barrage of enemy arrows.

His vision swims in and out of focus for a few long minutes as he tries to regain focus; Sakura watches him worriedly, and he wonders if the only reason she hasn’t reached for him is the baby in her arms.

So many times when I could have killed her.

“You couldn’t have,” the interrupts his chaotic thoughts as if she’s read them. “It turns out my abilities apply to part of my body. At the time, she was part of it, so she would have been fine even if you had—”

“You’re not helping,” he says through gritted teeth.

“I’m not trying to,” she tells him matter-of-factly. “You should feel bad about it. That’s something that’s going to haunt you for the rest of your life.”

His mouth parts in surprise at the coolness in her voice here, but then he closes it, because she’s right.

“But that’s the past,” she goes on. “The past can haunt us all it likes, but it’s done and can’t be changed. The future can be. And I know that more than anything you want that. Because we have her.”

He thinks on this, and then asks, tentative, “We?”

She nods. “No matter what happens between us, she’s ours. Nothing will ever change that.”

He ignores the pit in his stomach at the unspoken implications of that and focusses his attentions on the baby again. Tentatively, and only after receiving a nod of encouragement from Sakura, Sasuke reaches shaking fingers toward the sleeping baby and brushes her bangs from her cheeks.

“Sarada?” he asks, hesitant.

“I named her for you and me,” Sakura tells him. “And…for Itachi.”

“It’s…it’s a good name.”

She offers him a tiny, cautious smile. “I hoped you would like it.”

He rests his hand on the crown of Sarada’s head, overtaken by a sudden strong desire and yet unable to articulate it. He shoots Sakura a beseeching look, and after a moment, her smile widens. “Do you finally want to hold her?”

He nods once.

“Here,” she says, and inches closer to him. “Hold out your arms. One goes under her body, and you have to—yes, sypport the head just like that.”

“I’ve held a baby before,” he grunts, a little of his usually orneriness peeking through the disbelief.

“You’ve never held your own before,” she quips.

To which he can offer no argument.

The swaddled baby is a warm, comforting weight in the crook of his arm; a beat later, Sakura’s familiar warmth spreads across the side of his left arm as she leans closer to him.

Sasuke tears his eyes from his daughter to Sakura, and is surprised to note silent tears running down her cheeks. He can’t tell if they are from happiness or sadness, but the sight of them bother him all the same.

“I don’t mean to force this on you. I never did,” Sakura says, trying to keep the warble of emotion from her voice. “I wanted to tell you alone, away from everyone else, so that it wouldn’t influence the peace talks. This should have been more private, and I’m sorry I couldn’t manage that –”

“Sakura –”

“But she started crying, and she never cries unless something’s wrong. She’s usually so quiet and well-behaved – and I think she got that from you, because my mother told me once I was a fussy baby –”

“Sakura –”

“ – and before you think I’m trying to use her to influence your decisions, you have to know I would never do that. And whatever decisions are made today, I don’t expect you to ever love me again –”

“Sakura.”

He speaks sharply now, loud enough that the baby in his arms shifts and frowns in her sleep. Her parents are quiet a beat, watching with baited breath to see if she will wake, and when she doesn’t, Sasuke deliberately returns his gaze to Sakura.

As soon as her eyes meet his, he informs her, “I never stopped.”

Sakura’s lips part in surprise, and a tiny oh escapes her.

For the first time today, she appears to be the on at a loss for words, and it seems wasteful not to take advantage of this.

Mindful of the baby in his arm and wary of the receptiveness of the woman before him, Sasuke leans tentatively forward. He moves slowly, giving her every opportunity to pull away from him – a right she has every excuse in the world to use, and yet he is relieved to see she doesn’t. As his face draws nearer to hers, her eyes move from his eyes to his mouth and back again, cheeks turning an even darker shade of red than earlier. She rests one of her hands lightly on his arm, and he pauses to confirm whether this is a sign to stop, but the subtle twitch – fingers curling into the material of his robes – suggest the opposite.

He can see a tear beading on her eyelashes, and feel the tiny, flyaway wisps of her hair against his face.

When their lips finally meet, it is utterly chaste.

There is no push or pull in this, no desperate need to possess or taste or merge. Sasuke fits her trembling bottom lip between both of his, resting softly against her, and though she gasps, he makes no move to deepen the kiss.

For once it is Sakura who breaks away first, exhaling a shuddering sigh; there are two damp trails down her cheeks, but she is smiling at him. She opens her mouth to say something, and then abruptly shuts it again. Before Sasuke can pay much attention to the nervous, expectant feeling in his stomach, she reaches up with her hand and taps two fingers against his forehead.

“I never stopped either,” she whispers, leaning forward until their foreheads rest together.

They stay like this for a long while, resting against one another and gazing down at the child between them.

“But if you ever pull anything like that again, I will unmake you,” she tells him, voice laced with promise. “As it is, as soon as you’re back to full health, I’m going to kick your ass so hard, Uchiha Madara will feel it.”

For the first time in years, Sasuke laughs.

“People will still want answers,” Sasuke says eventually. “You saw earlier. They’ll want to know how this happened.”

“I doubt we have to explain that.”

Sasuke gives her a look, causing Sakura to laugh, and then turn serious.

“We won’t tell them about Itachi’s illness,” she decides. “That’s his own secret, and as your brother and my patient, I see no reason to make anyone aware of it.” Sasuke is grateful for this. “As for our time together before…”

“They don’t need to know about that, either,” Sasuke says, feeling unexpectedly protective of those secret nights together. “As far as anyone might know, the day of the failed summit we…”

He flounders, trying to find the right words, and Sakura grin, and supplies, “Went for a stroll?”

The way she says it drips with innuendo.

“Yes,” he answers shortly, ignoring how warm his clothes feel just then.

“Perhaps we even discussed uniting our clans to ensue the peace,” Sakura goes on. “And then Danzō’s betrayal stopped any possible plans.”

Sasuke nods thoughtfully, and then asks, “Is that why you brought it up?”

“What?”

“That day – the last time we – you mentioned bringing the two clans together,” he reminds her. “Was it because of Sarada?”

Sakura sighs and nods sadly. “Partially. Of course, I want peace…but I also want a better world for her. Don’t you?”

He does. More than he has ever wanted anything in his life.

Yet, even as he thinks of the bright future his daughter has in front of her, he can’t help sensing a darkness that threatens it. A shadow cast by her own father, hated and reviled by the people of this land for his deeds.

“She will be judged for my actions,” he realises, “if they aren’t judging her for them already.”

“Let them try!” Sakura says fiercely.

“No,” he shakes his head. He carefully hands Sarada back to Sakura, who automatically takes the baby though she looks confused. “My legacy will harm her and anything she aspires to in the future. It would be better for her if I left. This world is for her, not for m –”

Sakura’s free hand snaps out and slaps him. It’s not a particularly powerful for her, but enough to make his teeth rattle.

“You damned, stupid idiot!” she snarls. “How could you think of doing that!” She shakes her fist at him, and he suspects the only reason she doesn’t do worse is because of the baby in her arm. “We both lost our parents, we both know what that feels like! And you would subject our daughter to that?”

“We had parents worth emulating,” Sasuke replies stiffly. “She already has one of those in you. My being in her life would do her more harm than good.”

“If you’re worried about your legacy here harming her, then we’ll all leave!”

Sasuke opens his mouth to argue, and then realises what she just said, and blinks. “What?”

“All three of us,” Sakura goes on, expression stubborn. “Together. We can start over somewhere else – change our names, become…I don’t know, farmers or something. It doesn’t matter, because we’ll at least stay together!”

At this point Sasuke’s jaw has dropped in shock, because this was the last reaction he expected to his suggestion.

“We’ll sign this peace accord and then leave,” Sakura goes on. “We could even make it a condition of the accords, that to ensure peace remains here, the Senju and Uchiha will leave this land. I’m sure it wouldn’t take much to convince people of –”

“No. You and Sarada would be better off here. My leaving has nothing to do with you –”

“Nothing to do with me?” Sakura demands angrily.

Sarada begins to fuss in Sasuke’s arm, and they both fall silent once more, conscious that their argument is disturbing their daughter.

“You can’t give up everything on my account!” Sasuke hisses.

“I already have!” Sakura shoots back in a harsh whisper. “You and your damned eyes, that first day we met!” He goes still, stunned, because those are his words. “I’ve been ready to give up everything ever since that day, and it’s been hell! Do you know how hard the past few months have been? Especially since Sarada was born? Some days the only way I got through it was by telling myself that today would be the day. Today you would come back to me. To us.”

He looks away. “If I have put you through so much…it would be selfish to stay.”

“It would be selfish to leave. If you do, Sarada will be without her father…and I will be without the man I love.”

“Sometimes that which we love can cause the most harm,” he murmurs. He thinks on the generations of Uchiha who threw away their lives for the clan they loved so deeply.

“You’ve already done me enough harm to last a lifetime – would you do more?” she asks him bluntly, and he winces, because he deserves that. She sighs. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that. Naruto explained your reasons and…I know you weren’t in your right mind...”

“It’s no excuse.”

“No, but I’m offering it anyway,” she replies, and tries to smile. This time, she is unable to do it. “If you leave, you take my heart with you. People can’t live without their hearts, Sasuke-kun. Not me, nor you.”

“I don’t deserve any of this, Sakura,” he sighs, though he feels himself wavering. “I’ve taken so many lives—”

“And I haven’t?” she counters. “I told you once before. The reason I became a medic was to make up for the lives I had to take. You can’t make up for your mistakes if you’re dead, or if you leave.”

“Sakura…”

“Stay,” she implores him. “Build the future your brother wanted. Be the father Sarada needs, and try to make up for the damage done to this country by being a part of it. I’m not saying you ever will—you’ve done a lot of things wrong. But it’s better than the alternative. Exiling yourself is the same as running away, and it goes against everything that you are.”

“I still face a tribunal,” he reminds her. “I doubt they will care to take into account this future of yours.”

“It doesn’t matter. Whatever they decide, we will deal with it as a family.”

He stills. “Is that we are?”

“It’s what we have always been,” she insists. “Even when you were too stubborn to see it.”

Hello my dear friends.. !!! You are probably surprised to see this post today because I never blog over the weekend. But today is my birthday, so I just wanted to say hi to everyone and thank you all for being such an amazing and important part of my life, particularly for the past couple of years. I saw this post first on Steff’s blog @ Little Book Nook and thought it would be a good one to do on this special day of my life. Don’t forget to checkout their blog for more fun bookish content. And now let’s get started with this post.

1. What was the last book you read?

It’s just the first week of the New Year and I was already overthinking what to read. So, I decided to pick up my go to escapist read, The Warsaw Protocol by Steve Berry.

2. Was it a good one?

It definitely was a lot of fun and I just love the familiarity of reading about characters whom I’ve known for so long.

3. What made it good?

The same factors that have made me continue with this series for almost a decade – lots of history, descriptions of beautiful places across the globe which I would love to visit, and some thrilling action and adventure.

4. Would you recommend it to other people?

I definitely would, especially when anyone needs a little pick me up or to readers who love books like Da Vinci Code and movies like National Treasure.

5. How often do you read?

I try to read pretty much everyday because it’s such an important part of my life.

6. Do you like to read?

Is this question valid???

7. What was the last bad book you read?

I really wanted to like Blitzed but I just couldn’t.

8. What made you dislike it?

I had too many expectations because the main character Brynne was a favorite from the previous books. The book had a lot going for it but some of the actions of Brynne felt very unlike her and downright awful, and the conflict at the end so unreasonable that it just soured my whole experience.

9. Do you wish to be a writer?

I mean, I think I want to be but I’m not sure I can. I’m not a very creative person, so I don’t think writing my own stories is gonna be my thing. But I love blogging about books.

10. Has any book ever influenced you greatly?

I did a whole post last year about books that have impacted me over the years and the first one that I always talk about is the Mahabharata. I have read many versions of the epic and I can still find something to learn from it.

11. Do you read fan-fiction?

I haven’t read much recently but there was a long period of time in 2018 when I was pretty obsessed with fanfics. And I still like them, I guess I just don’t have the time.

12. Do you write fan-fiction?

Nah.. As I said, I’m not a very creative person.

13. What is your favourite book?

Ain’t that the toughest question you can ask any reader..!!! But one of my last year’s absolute favorites is Red, White and Royal Blue.

14. What is your least favourite book?

This is actually even more tougher to answer, because why would I want to remember books I hated. So, I’ll pass.

15. Do you prefer physical books or reading on a device (like Kindle)?

Kindle, any time. I’ve gotten used to reading ebooks on devices and now I find it actually tough to read physical copies.

16. When did you learn to read?

I don’t know, must have been 3 or 4.

17. What is your favourite book you had to read in school?

I didn’t have a lot of assigned reading in school but one my favorites was a Sherlock Holmes short story, The Speckled Band which started my obsession with him.

18. What is your favourite book series?

Throne of Glass… Always !!!!!

19. Who is your favourite author?

Wow there are so many..!!!! Rin Chupeco, Nisha Sharma, Sandhya Menon, Leigh Bardugo, SJM, Robert Jackson Bennett etc etc.

20. What is your favourite genre?

Fantasy… duh!!!!

21. Who is your favourite character from a series?

Again… it’s obviously Aelin. I don’t know why I love her so much, I just do.

22. Has a book ever transported you somewhere else?

I have really felt transported by the Grisha trilogy, particularly Ravka is written very vividly and makes me wanna go there.

23. Which book do you wish had a sequel?

From my last year’s reads, it has to be Descendant of the Crane. I can’t believe there might not be a sequel.

24. Which book do you wish DIDN’T have a sequel?

I’m not exactly sure because I usually love getting more books with the same characters. But I definitely wish Cursed Child wasn’t canon.

25. How long does it take you to read a book?

If the book is good, just a day. If anything goes beyond 2-3 days, then I’m either gonna hate it or DNF it.

26. Do you like when books become movies?

I’m very bad at visualizing what I read, so I love movie adaptations. They just need to be good.

27. Which book was ruined by its movie adaptation?

Allegiant maybe. I loved that series (till that dreadful ending) but the movie was so dull and boring.

28. Which movie has done the book justice?

Lord of the Rings… !!!! I know hardcore book fans might not think so, but I adore the movies.

29. Do you read newspapers?

In childhood yes. Now I get my news from twitter.

30. Do you read magazines?

I might turn the pages of a magazine if I’m in a bookstore but I’m not that much into them. Sometimes, I might buy an Indian one if it has my favorite celebs on the cover or any special interviews.

31. Do you prefer newspapers or magazines?

None.

32. Do you read while in bed?

I actually put on an audiobook and go to sleep while listening to it. It has become a daily ritual now.

33. Do you read while on the toilet?

Well I usually have my phone or iPad with me, so sometimes yes.

34. Do you read while in the car?

I don’t know how to drive and I have a tendency to panic even when I’m a passenger, so reading while in the car is very good for curbing my anxiety.

35. Do you read while in the bath?

Nah.. not my thing.

36. Are you a fast reader?

Yup.

37. Are you a slow reader?

Nope.

38. Where is your favourite place to read?

My couch.

39. Is it hard for you to concentrate when you read?

I don’t think so. I put on tv or music while reading and I can concentrate just fine.

40. Do you need a room to be silent when you read?

No way. I’m not good with silences.

41. Who gave you your love for reading?

My parents were apparently avid readers before I was born and my name literally means “Literature”, so I always say I was destined to be a reader. And books were always what I got as gifts right from when I was around 6 years old, so I think it would be my parents who gave me my love for reading.

42. What book is next on your list to read?

I have no idea. Maybe Trick Mirror or Of Curses and Kisses.

43. When did you start to read chapter books?

I don’t think chapter books were really a thing in my childhood.

44. Who is your favourite children’s author?

Enid Blyton.

45. Which author would you most want to interview?

I met Nisha Sharma once during the Baltimore Book Festival and had a lovely chat with her, but I would love to do a more indepth interview with her for my blog.

46. Which author do you think you would be friends with?

I would love to be friends with Leigh Bardugo and Sandhya Menon.

47. What book have you reread the most?

Review: QoS

Throne of Glass, Queen of Shadows, Crooked Kingdom and Red, White and Royal Blue.

48. Which books do you consider ‘classics’?

I don’t think I like the label classic. It sounds a bit pretentious.

49. Which books do you think should be taught in every school?

Among the books I read last year, I would choose Kindred, How to Hide and Empire, Between the World and Me, and Good Talk.

50. Which books should be banned from all schools?

I don’t think banning books serves any purpose, other than driving up the interest for them. But maybe we can tell students about the problematic content in certain books and then let them decide if they still want to read them.
