I miss HTTYD 1.

So much!

Everything about it was absolute peak-! The story, the sound effects, the BG music, the nostalgic score, the character design and character development, the theme, the dynamic flight sequences, the FEELS!

And finally, one of the best scenes in the franchise's history with a score so damn good one can see the whole thing while just listening to it. Not to mention the absolute dread and ferocity Toothless exhibits in some scenes.

Httyd 1 was truly the best piece of media in the franchise (not counting the books)

I rewatched the Dragon Prince recently since season 6 is coming out next month (WOOOOOO) so naturally i had to put my most recent blorbos in a The Dragon Prince Au

Jack

so Jack is a Skywing elf mage-in-training because the power set of Sky mages seems to match Jack's powers the closest. They create gusts of wind, storms, can fly, breathe ice breaths, and frost touches. It was a tough choice between that or a Moonshadow elf, what with the whole invisibility thing, but i just can't imagine Jack not being able to fly :/

And even though most Skywing elves dont have wings, i gave him the wings because vibes and because i can

i did add some moon opal charms to his staff though, so he can do some small moon spells

Toothless

i wanted to adjust some of the details to Toothless's design because i didn't want it to be a 1-to-1 of his design in HTTYD. I noticed the dragons in Xadia all have snouts, horns, and muscled forelegs, and i tried to incorporate some of that to Toothless. With a narrower head and longer legs and more hand like claws.

I added more prominent scales, nose plates (like the storm dragons in TDP) and tried to add more horns to spots on his legs and wings.

I also made Toothless a lot bigger than he is in the HTTYD universe because those Xadian dragons?? Excuse me?? Even a common one is still pretty huge!

There's also a dragon that exists in the Dragon Prince universe called a Midnight Dragon, and it's connected to the Moon Arcanum! They're said to have pitch black scales and are sensitive to light, so i thought it was fitting for Toothless. There weren't any pictures of the dragon tho so i kinda just made the design as i went.

Hiccup

i tried using costume designs from both the first two movies, with the vest, the belts, and the pant pattern.

colors took me longer to figure out, because i wanted to have some red (like in RttE) along with the greens and browns. Overall though im happy with how it turned out!

I think Hiccup would be the son of Commander or General Stoic in the Katolis army some years before or during the events of The Dragon Prince/Mystery of Aaravos.

These designs are for early in the story, before Hiccup loses his leg and when he meets Toothless for the first time. Definitely thinking that him and his village are known for their handling of dragons and elves in the region and then Hiccup shoots Toothless down just like in the movie. But as they become friends, Jack finds them and misunderstands the situation and thinks Hiccup is going to kill Toothless.

So that'll be fun >:)

So here we go again:

Last week i was on holiday and we were in an arcade.

Now, for context, recently me and my bestie have been rewatching a bunch of childhood films and stuff together, and one of the ones we really got reinvested in was httyd. Rn were actually watching rtte together! :3

So when i saw a httyd claw machine with Toothless, the light fury and a few nightlights in it, of course my immediate natural response was

... but my stupid ass still proceeded to spend £10 trying to win him

After i had sacrificed my money to the addictive shame hole that is the coin slot, my little 6 year old nephew came over and was like "i wanna try!", so i stepped aside and, frustrated, made a comment to my mom about how "I swear if he wins one now its rigged"

And guess what?

HE FUCKIN WON ONE

The universe decided to spite me and mustve found it absolutely hilarious, as this child who was barely tall enough to reach the controls walked away happily with his new dragon friend.

Safe to say, i went to bed that night very salty XD

I came back to the arcade the next night with an absolute VENGEANCE

I marched straight over to that machine and continued to throw money into the abyss

I very well couldve just bought a plush from somewhere (which was likely the much smarter thing to do) but now it was a matter of goddamn principle, and i was ready to fistfight lady luck at any second

After i wasted another solid £15, my nephew once again bounces his way over to me and asks to have a go

My exasperated, frustrated ass just tells him to go right ahead and steps aside, quite frankly on the verge of just punching through the glass and reaching in to grab the plush myself.

He puts in his coin

Moves the joystick

The claw drops

It grabs the plush

AND HE FUCKIN WINS IT

LITERALLY WHAT ARE THE ODDS 😭😭😭😭

He very excitedly got it out of the machine and then gave it to me, since he already had one, it was the one i wanted, and i spent alot of money trying to get it

And so in return for Toothless, i let him pick out some yarn and made him a sweater for his dragon XD

Honestly for me he’s the only one with blorbo potential, especially in rtte (the ending that the franchise deserved imo… what third movie? There wasn’t even a second one! I do like the 2nd movie but I just can’t deal with stoic’s death)

For me he wasn’t my favorite until one of the times I rewatched rtte and realized that he was canonically bi (fishlout/snotlegs will always be canon to me, there were too moments and I feel like it definitely could’ve been implied if they hadn’t done the stuff with heather [fishlegs did her dirty ngl, like he flirted with Ruff at Dagur’s and Mala’s wedding] and Ruffnut) and that he wasn’t the complete ass hole than I thought he was. Also Spitelout was definitely abusive to him, it’s canon that he psychologically abusive and manipulated Snotlout and belittled him >:c

Anyway, I love him, I wanna hold him in the palm of my hand, and maybe squeeze him :)

I headcanon that Rtte is a whole different timeline from the rest of the Dragon series and movies. It kinda stands out as its own thing. Just expressing how I felt after rewatching the series. It could honestly be just it's own stand alone timeline and create more stories and world building out of it.

I feel as though some plot points have been ignored or simply did not come into fruition due to studio restraints.

I'd be willing to watch a whole series of just Hiccup finding more lore about the Grimborns after death. Like how vast is this business? A leader dying shouldn’t stop from there honestly. This is a vast business and connections that will be effected if the leader is gone and they have to go through close relatives or voting on who should carry the title. It's way to big to simply just disappear and I wanna know the impact of it; including to the riders that have became known for going up against them.

Interesting headcanon for sure! I’m the kind of person who likes trying to squish the whole franchise together, shows and all.

But also, that would be so interesting to see how the Dragon Hunters are affected by all this, and what happens years later. Like, you’re right: they lost their leaders. What comes next?

Hiccup discovering more about the Grimborns posthumously would also be crazy interesting, because there’s emotion attached to that.

I could see revenge plots against the Riders and their friends happening at some point. Oooh, that would be fun. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!!!

Forever grateful to Toggo/SuperRTL for just putting the entire german dub of Nexo Knights (aside from the 2 special epsiodes, but I don't think they ever aired in germany) on YouTube and the app/website (with the wonky webgames) for free.

I mean, they put most of their shows on the website, but often only some of the episodes and especially on YouTube where they usually only put the peoples favorite episodes. Especially if it's like Dragons rtte or Trollhunters that belongs to Netflix.

But I can just go on YouTube and rewatch it whenever. Disney could never. As soon as a show doesn't give them money they erase it's existence, which makes pirating they only way to watch some stuff.

So yeah, if you understand german, you can watch Nexo Knights on Youtube. Full episodes, no ad breaks in the episode. Only thing is that it's on the YouTube kids mode so there are no comments and you can't scroll through YouTube while watching.

Or maybe you wanna learn german, go watch Lego Nexo Knights on Youtube then.

I'm in love with your blog. No one ever goes into this much detail about Riders of Berk or Defenders of Berk and it's long overdue. I'm not too good with words, so I'm really thankful you're able to explain so clearly what makes these shows amazing. Every post is so well written! Can't wait to read more 😊

Hey! Thank you so much. You have no idea how much this means to me.

I revisited this series, following a transition in my personal life, and felt like I needed some space for fun. I love reviewing shows / breaking down characters and when I latched back on to this series, I thought I would be alone in the fandom because, frankly, its a pretty old show.

ROB and DOB isn’t as easily available like RTTE on Netflix. And it was my brother’s subscription to HULU and PEACOCK that got me the chance to rewatch them. So, I thought, who else would wanna read or know about this show given the chance, yannow?

I do pour my heart and soul into writing, editing, framing the show into posts and I do feel a little exposed when I talk candidly. I think the HTTYD series speaks to me on a deeper level than just an adventure movie, and I trust it is the same for many of us. It means the world that many of you have been responding so kindly and encouragingly on this platform. We can never have too much of this type of positivity.

Hiccup is a lost boy in a forgotten age, Toothless is a totem of his courage. He is finding himself, in a world where he shouldn’t succeed (naturally), in a world that only wants to take from him, to take from anyone. A world greedy for power, influence and money. Similar to ours.

But Hiccup isn’t interested in that. Though a born leader, he comes into his purpose from the angle of kindness, and it is that angle that makes him such a great heir / chief to Berk. Berk is in a transition. They don’t need a large, strong Viking chief anymore. They need an innovator, a listener, an inventor. Someone smart. He is exactly what Berk needs for the future, the village is just beginning to know that.

The thing about ROB and DOB is, it is where it all started. It is a show portraying the incremental developments of Hiccup from boy to man. His temperament is still immature. His goals, a little superficial. But his heart, it grows larger and larger, because he is open to making mistakes and correcting them. Forgiving and moving on. Sure, it is about training dragons, but it is also about parenthood, friendships, family, relationships, responsibilities. Growth. To miss out on ROB and DOB is to miss out on a lot.

He becomes a strong leader of Dragon’s Edge because of his compassion. He becomes a man worthy of Astrid, because of the same. And that spoke to me, because for a long time, I wondered what the point was in being considered “the nice one”. For many years, I thought it was always weakness to be nice, because you get bullied for it / made fun of for it. But, I see now, that kindness is strength. And in time it will reap benefits. What kind? Too soon to say.

I get that this is a cartoon, it might just be for kids. But as a girl, in my early 20s, still growing, finding myself as I navigate through the cusps of adulthood, I am beginning to realise why we need nice people. I can see how this show relates to me, even if I am no longer the target audience it was created for. But having watched this as a kid, and then revisit it and finding different messages and take-aways can we consider this show timeless? Apt?

Be kind. There will be a few, those treasured few, who would pierce beyond the veil of our compassion and realise, that there is more to life than just gold, treasures, power and titles. It is all about community. And that is in essence, what Hiccup is, a man born to serve his community, the son of a chief. The impetus of change.

I believe that his father saw it, and that’s what lead him to say, at the end of DOB :

I’m currently making a pretty long post about my reasoning for why I think all of the main dragon riders are autistic, and I just wanna clarify some things before. (I’m aware this post isn’t rlly necessary but I wanted to put this out there first.)

i watched the first film multiple times couple years back, I’ve more recently rewatched riders/defenders of berk and am watching race to the edge currently. I don’t remember or care about anything from the second film onwards, most of what I know about everything else is from other peoples posts on here and stuff

okay.

i know i've said that the httyd soundtrack is pain before. i know that. and i've been nostalgic before. nothing new there.

but i think today is the first time i've actually felt such a strong pang in my chest that i stopped listening to it.

life isn't crappy right now. in fact, i'd argue my life used to be worse during the time the franchise was ongoing, and that's why i took such deep solace in it.

but so much of me wants it back. i wanna be nine and rewatch the first movie again and again and not really get the plot but mimic hiccup as he steps over toothless's drawing. i wanna be thirteen and watch the second movie on my dad's phone because i missed it in theaters and gasp when stoick dies....because deaths like that don't just happen. i wanna be sitting in front of the tv watching rtte season 2 and yelling out "WHAT" when astrid and heather hug each other in snow way out. i wanna be about to go to sleep when an amazing fic idea strikes me and i work on it right then and there and post it and get hopefully at least one review by morning when i wake up. i wanna see that persephone or another fic updated and drop whatever I'm doing and read it.

i want to fly again.

i miss hiccup and astrid and stoick and snotlout and ruffnut and all of them.

most people who follow me know that i wasn't the biggest fan of httyd3. i didn't think it was oscar-worthy like the first two movies were. but

i still want it to win.

i want the franchise to win, and it's okay if it doesn't. but i think that it should win on account of all three movies, on account of the show, on account of me loving it. that's not how it works. whatever.

i just want the feelings httyd gave me back. that's all.

Thanks! I never got a chance to engage with the fandom while the franchise was up and in full gear, so I decided to watch the entire franchise over(#tazzylive extends back to the first movie, I have a link in my desc if you wanna see it) and liveblog it. 

RTTE is my favorite part of the franchise. It has so much depth, more character development, and doesn’t make Hiccup or the riders overpowered heroes. Plus it has the best HTTYD villain of all time. I love it so much.
