Thinking about A Square being returned wrong. Mirrored. Irreversible
A Sphere fucks up, and puts him down in the wrong direction, wrong side up. It's not like he remembers, but A Square certainly does. When he wakes up- it's too late.
The third dimension never phased him, but what about something so intrinsic as your own body, flipped the wrong way? The world becoming upside-down, having to relearn to navigate the places you called home. And it's such obvious proof of the third dimension, but what if it's all in your head? No one can tell with your features being confined to a corner, you can only try to explain the distress you're going through, but if you try you'll certainly be deemed a madman.
We know his knowledge changed him, but what if it changed him physically? In a way he can never return from? He could've passed it off as the strangest dream, denied it's truth, lived the rest of his life at peace, but how do you disprove something so concrete? Would he think himself insane too, after a while?
Someone let me access a two-dimensional being i have a hypothesis that needs to be tested

I actually, sincerely, literally had a license to piss because of health issues I have. It also gave me a free pass to carry a water bottle which was banned contraband at every school I ever went to and also let me continue to wear skirts still even after my school system implemented a school uniform. Which directly led to a reform of our uniform since it was seen as unfair by other students and their parents that I was the only student allowed to wear skirts so technically it's thanks to me that wearing a skirt as part of the uniform is allowed by my public school system. And teachers still didn't give a singular fuck and liked to try and tell me I couldn't use the bathroom, lolol.

Fandoms love flip flopping, where once the main interpretation was of an abusive Carmilla, now commenting on her characters flaws gets you called out for slander (politely called out, no hate to that individual I respect u greatly <3)
ANYWAY. My Opinion on Carmilla. She is Morally better than the mechanisms, and her intentions were good, however the relationship between her and her immoral children WAS ABUSIVE. In both directions.
I shall look at all Cannon Interactions between Carmilla and the mechs:
-Carmilla specifically never starved them for THAT long
-Carmilla installed a morality switch into brian. (the mechs claim it was for cruel entertainment purposes, I do not believe them)
-Carmilla did not bioprograme the mechs
-The Mechs airlocked Carmilla "Lots"
-Carmilla didn't leave through the airlock the last time
-The Mechanisms are described as "on the run" from carm
-"it always ends like this" refering to Jonny panicking as Carmilla drugs him in homestuck
Its common for the mechs to be violent towards each other, but that seems more like banter to me. With Carmilla its different because thats a parental figure grasping for control over her children she loves, inflicting violence to keep them in line. The Mechanisms Inflict it back, airlocking her and trying to get away from her because they see her as impeding on their freedom.
The Mechs assume Carmilla made the morality switch for entertainment because their own motivations for doing anything are for entertainment. I think they see carmillas modivations as Trying to control them, hold power over them, when her actual motivations were to stop them from hurting people.
The Relationship between Carm and the Mechs was an unhealthy power struggle between individuals who love eachother but were ultimately too at odds with eachother's morals to ever work out a healthy situation. In the end Carmilla realized it was for the best if they parted ways.

Been reading all of your psychosexual analysis of homestuck + it's characters and god this stuff is fascinating. It can be real hard to find any writing on sexuality, kinks and fetishes in fandoms but it seems that hs is almost like a gold mine when it comes to this topic thanks to the coming-of-age theme. The murder = sex post hasn't left my head since I read it and now when I see any scene mention / involve either of the two I can't help but think about how the other could be relevant. Never thought suicidal ideation could be so masturbatory before this.
Glad to say your posts have helped me get a slightly better understanding of anything I read. I'd never really thought much about things like positioning of characters in frames / panels, sequences of events and choice of words since I didn't really care for literary analysis before I got into homestuck. Sort of a 'came for the cool flashes, stayed for the writing' type situation, which is a pipeline that makes me thankful for the animations Hussie made because I'd only ever inferred that the writing was bad from conversations I'd seen people having about hs.
Anyway, you talked about how Rose's fear of drowning (loss of control) correlates to her non-con kink and now I'm wondering what you think the other characters fears suggest about their sexual interests? I'd assume John's fear of heights has something to do with the fall, and from there some sort of corruption kink / a fetish for anything generally 'sinful'; which would explain his interest in 'bad' girls like Vriska (and the way he eagerly adopts her mannerisms).
The planets tend to include each kid's fears / insecurities so it's not exactly hard to figure those out, but I'm not sure whether I'm making the "right" connections, since I'm just making the best with what I have (bare minimum literary knowledge) and homestuck makes a lot of references to outside works.
Extra request: if you've got any good books / posts / articles / whatevers on psychosexuality or such please tell me. I'm curious and bored
I'm glad you're getting something out of the blog! Goofy fetish talk is kind of rare, but it is striking when you find it: I watched Good Luck Chuck at Karkat's recommendation and that turned out to be a central motif. Sex/death substitution is a bit more common... here's a write up on Pulp Fiction you might like. You might also like these posts by SMG on Prometheus, he is the one who introduced me to a lot of the storytelling strategies I discuss on this blog. More generally though, I recommend looking for articles about movies you like and adding "psychoanalysis" to the search -- if nothing else, it's an easy way to find people who take sexual symbolism seriously.
Evaluating your own accuracy is tricky, but I can only recommend that you regard your current model of the story as provisional. Even as you search for information that strengthens your current understanding of the story, you'll likely stumble upon another framework that works just as well or better. Keep an open mind, some things have multiple answers
Re: fear-becomes-fetish motifs, the last major piece I wrote in this vein was about Dave, I think? It's kind of outdated though. My focus on individual psychologies faltered as I reoriented myself towards like, similar fear>fetish material on a societal level. One example: people inclined to worry about being Replaced by other races are the impetus for miscegenation porn, which repurposes feelings of resentment and inferiority for titillation -- this gets channeled into the "black always mates white" narrative of doom in Sburb, Derse (black) launching "seeds" at Prospit (white)/Skaia, Caliborn sexualizing his predomination over Calliope, etc. You can see traces of this narrative show up in characters like Kanaya (who agrees with Eridan that race purity matters, only to be haunted by cuck jokes like Watching Oblong Meat Products Tumble Into Places They Dont Belong) but its not like she even knows what black people are -- she's an alien. So when she tearfully agrees that Dirk can take better care of her wife than she ever could, it only /refers/ to the miscegenation porn structure, casting Kanaya as the impotent observer suffering yet another Lalondian "black out". There's a degree of abstraction at play that makes it difficult to say Kanaya "has" the kink being discussed through her, at least not in its entirety.
All of which is to say that while the kink angle is occasionally useful, it's not my current approach. Like you technically can link Jade's fear of lightning to her being a furry, but despite John explicitly referring to furry as a kink thing (and Jade having a daughter named Yiffy), the earliest reference to furry stuff is better parsed in terms of misogyny and transphobia, imo. You might be able to find more stuff indicating that Egbert secretly enjoys the Fall of Man (like her professed love of apocalypse movies, or the cheeky Save Rose From Corruption roleplay), but also the entry item could indicate a fixation on the Adam's Apple in the throat, as an early hint of June motifs. Or maybe I've just been away from this methodology for too long, and Egbert's traumatic fall from the slimer pogo indicates that the fear of heights should be linked to manbro bukkake theatre??? Idk, but again, that's not really my element anymore

haphazard assortment of thoughts on the unwanted guest:
firstly, it really does have to be said—crazy good, probably my favourite of all the tlt short pieces, and i say that as someone who lost my mind over as yet unsent for like a week. excellent conceit and excellent execution, just a really gorgeous piece of writing. the play format of course reminds me of what abigail says to harrow in htn—that the river bubble is a ‘play [she’s] directing’—the inside of one’s head as a stage in which other actors can intervene & whereby mileage can be gotten out of Symbolism as immediately “real,” tangible presences that the kind of realist baggage that a more quotidian prose form would usher in would probably falter in accomplishing. it’s a lot!! i think even if i wasn’t already a tazmuir writing style defender (contra the insistence that she’s yknow homestuck fanfiction serial numbers filed off hack) then this would have had me floored anyway.
the play format also works in the way that muir’s general dexterity in form and willingness to really make use of craft as a technical space where discourse can be generated always works—i’m talking about the ‘fanfictiony’ voice in gtn which manages to say something both about fanfiction and about the text itself, the use of the dramatis personae as a space where atmosphere can be established and plot points hinted towards (thus blurring the lines between what is and is not diegesis), the drastic shifts in style between different close thirds, the shifting from third- to second- to epistolary first-person, the use of poetry both diegetic and not (the noniad, the epigraph poems…), the mimicry of the ‘voice’ of the king james bible in the nona epilogue—she never stays in one place for too long and she never seems to stick to one central style or form, and it really works in her favour. insofar as tlt as a whole is a very ‘patchwork’ kind of work, building itself up from its big big index of references and intertexts and memes with hugely variant levels of ‘prestige’ or legitimacy attached to them, the ‘patchwork’ use of form really works in muir’s favour. however i am also fuming because i was right in the middle of writing a tlt fic which jumps into a play format two-thirds of the way through and now my idea doesn’t look ORIGINAL but ANYWAY—
& i really do need to flag my good friend vee’s mercy/augustine fic, which makes use of a similar conceit and pulls it off masterfully—i am deeply jealous of vee’s talent and i think the unwanted guest makes this piece (from 2021!) shine even more, if anything.
i am DYING to see where muir is going with the use of hamlet, of all things—dulcie quoting it to palamedes immediately catapulted my mind back to abigail’s reference to ‘that undiscovered country’ in htn. obviously muir likes to drop contemporary (or contemporarily canonical) references and turns of phrase all over the place, but the attention drawn to the quote as diegetically referential (“I like that. Is it from something?” / “Yes. It’s complicated.”) has me wondering about a) the survival of ‘pre-res’ literatures ~over the river and like WHY and b) what a thematic interlocking of tlt and hamlet can do, here…….real aveheads remember cytherea ophelia theory where i tried to use ophelia as a point of reference for teasing out some arguments about cytherea and death and aesthetics and white femininity and whatnot. all of which is to say i need to sit with this hamlet reading a lot more but i love it, i am so here for it.
of course ‘kissing or feeding, we can’t be sure’ calls to mind ‘how meat loves meat,’ alecto biting harrow’s mouth by way of a kiss…and the general thematic throughline of, you know, certain practices of love as practices of consumption, naberius later being figured as the ‘meat’ in question contains echoes of this eroticism which ofc guides the contours of the necromancer/cavalier dynamic, eroticism as a currency of power, we know all of this stuff because it’s all over the text but i am just thumbs-upping it from the sidelines
the coffins had me thinking of utena’s black rose arc, which is a fun link to make considering the equivalent moment in the main body of nona is also referencing utena, ie. with the ‘rules’ of the duel being that cam has to get the handkerchief out of ianthe’s pocket as kind of an equivalent to skewering the rose. i feel like the tlt/utena overlap is pretty self-explanatory but it’s just fun to see the fingerprints all over lol
i think a lot of this was treading old ground thematically (erotics of consumption, dog motifs, we’ve seen it already!) but i will say that i did Yell Out Loud over ‘who's she got dawdling behind her but that creature—tugging visibly at her leash like an overeager dog.’ reminded of the other memorable use of ‘leash’—’even the devil bent for god to put a leash around her neck’—and, of course, the endless parade of commonalities between gideon & alecto. anyway there’s not really anything in this line that we didn’t already know about gid as a character, thematically speaking, but i point it out because it inflicted +100 psychic damage when i read it. gideon as a ‘creature’ is particularly slimy, & sort of puts me in mind of ianthe's tendency to talk about what appears to us as 'butch masculinity' (as opposed to the more effete masculinity of augustine or even babs) with a notably derogatory slant (the 'hurtful threats of sexual violence' line comes to mind); i don't know that i have much to say about it here specifically but it's an interesting one that i think informs the kirianthe dynamic pretty heavily (especially when held up against, like, harrianthe ... ianthe has a kind of respect for whatever harrow's gay and stupid gender is Doing (at least insofar as she can mould it to her own desires; i'm thinking of the dios apate forcefemme scene lol) in ways that i don't think she has for kiriona? but this is v off-topic, lol).
i have never been especially taken by dulcie as a character but i think this may finally have forced me to fold and admit that she’s great. her haters!!! her agonies!!! camilla would have to cook!! the balance between levity and sincerity was really well-managed. & i love the double meaning of “unwanted guest” as both palamedes intruding on ianthe’s mind palace and naberius setting up shop inside of her.
i need a week to sit with where this idea of the consumed soul as being literally ‘digested’ such that it can begin to ‘inhabit,’ however immaterially, the host body, or like to alter the characteristics of the host body such that to carry out such a consumption is to kind of kill yourself as well, slots in with lolita theory. or like, i need alecto right now. i am however reminded of chew, a short story that muir wrote in 2013, which also plays with these ideas of sexual assault as a forcing of a part of yourself meaningfully ‘into’ another person, and cannibalism as the reenactment of such a process, figured in the story as kind of a reclamation or at least an assertion of permanence—“I was always going to be in the ground with him in me,” she said. “I just wanted to make sure, that’s all. I just wanted to make sure.”—which the unwanted guest seems to kind of, play with in reverse? i don’t know, but i’m interested—as ever—in where muir wants to take these ideas of rape and consumption and absorption that she’s got in her hands.
i keep returning to…i hesitate to say ‘parallels’ because i think that imposes a narrative onus that i’m not actually that convinced by, but these, like, commonalities between babs and gideon. gideon is played off against so many people (cristabel, loveday, alecto being the big ones) that it feels kind of inane to add another person to the pile, but like…they’re the two who get got in canaan house, they’re both ironically ‘false’ cavaliers and expressions of the ‘truest’ or most paradigmatic form that cavalierhood ‘can’/’should’ take, they both have unconventionally gendered names (‘babs’ is a shortened form of ‘barbara,’ it is a typically feminine name imo) and (by our standards) somewhat unconventional genders (gideon is butch, babs effete)—and of course the unwanted guest places a lot of emphasis on the coercive ‘making’ of cavalierhood (the reference to babs being ‘fixed’ were he to have a disability! ianthe’s glib ‘society really is to blame’ comment—ironic, obviously, but not wholly untrue) not dissimilar to the emphasis that gtn puts on cytherea moulding gideon into the state she comes to be in at the end. babs and gideon as the two possessed corpses in nona, obviously. two wildly diverse but ultimately converging trajectories! a dialectical tension between their fundamental ‘opposition’ (as by-the-book cavalier vs whatever gideon is doing) and their fundamental ‘sameness’ whereby the dialectic is resolved in their mutual deaths. also just, of course, continuing the throughline that muir has had going for a while now, of gender/gendering as a set of coercive enforcements loyal to a hegemonic structuring of the world.
that’s all i’ve got, i think. just. really good everyone say thank you tazmuir

Names for every sprite (canon and not) - Homestuck
After this post (link), I started thinking about names for every sprite (prototyped Kernelsprites) that isn't simply their names smashed together. You can totally disagree with me :) I'm fine with it.
Yes, I will also explain my thought process and the names' meanings.
Note: I love using common words as names, but there will be other options as well :)
Note2: I find translations and meanings on google; of course I don't know all the languages of the world. So if I fuck-up some names, pardon :( (I can't fuck-up italian names cuz I'm italian tho lolz).
Note3: Not everyone has 2 names, it's hard :c
Note4: Many characters miss, and I WANT to make a second part!!! So don't worry too much about it (but you can totally contribute if you want :) )
Note5: No ship tagged cuz it's not a ship list lolz, but you can consider it like that if you want :3
Long post
Canon:
* Davepetasprite^2 = Paws, Hunter
>Paws: cuz i said so (scientific answer).
>Hunter: Both cats and crows are hunter-animals.
* Erisolsprite = Selvhad, Jabez
>Selvhad: "Self-hatred" in Danish.
>Jabez: Hebrew name, meaning "born in pain".
* Fefetasprite = Harcsa, Nyna
>Harcsa: Means Catfish in Hungarian.
>Nyna: Means "enclosure of fish" in Babylonian, but it sounds kind of like Nya/Nyan too (onomatopoeia for cats in japanese). Also, niña in spanish translate to little girl (which is cute).
Non-canon, random order:
* Johnrosesprite = Spring, Aurora
>Spring: When there's a lot of sun but breeze as well.
>Aurora: Girl-name (so perfect for Junerosesprite); an Aurora in italian also refers to Northern Lights, which are formed through "solar winds" (at least that's how we call them).
^* Rosejadesprite = Spring (it's perfect here too!!), Wisteria
>Spring: There is SUN, the FLOWERS blossom!!!
>Wisteria: Purple flower that is toxic to cats and dogs (and horses, if you care).
* Aradavesprite = Jikan, Horatia/o
>Jikan: Means Time in Japanese.
>Horatia/o: Latin names that means Timekeeper (or Hour, Time, Season). Horatia is feminine while Horatio is masculine, I imagine them simply switch from day to day.
* Jadekansprite (Jade+Kanaya) = Lotus, Zhade
>Lotus: Frogs often use Lotus leaves (alternative to frog leaves, called "common plantain" lol).
>Zhade: French name that means "precious stone". It's Jade in french, basically.
* Johnluxsprite = Netsky, Cloud
>Netsky: It's a PC virus. I choose it because of its name. Obvious reasons.
>Cloud: Another word for name srr, but John=Wind/Sky, Sollux=PC, Cloud=The thing on the sky & The App(s) (there are many).
* Solkatsprite (/Katluxsprite) = Downup, Moros
>Downup: One of the names of a powerful virus, which locks all accesses to infected advices and that permits to others to control the device from distance. It mostly uses fake anti-virus programs to spread - like "scareware" (it was used as a war weapon too).
>Moros: In Greek means "Doom"/"Impending Doom", but it also looks like moron so of course I had to include it.
* Rosekansprite = Rosemary, Ambrosia
>Rosemary: Yes, their ship name. But it simply fits!!
>Ambrosia: It's the Gods' food; Ambrosia is the *pollen* that Gods drink to stay immortal.
* Calliejadesprite = Titan, Oxalis
>Titan: Could be just me flashing like crazy, but anyways the Titans where the children of Heaven (Calliope, a Cherubin) and Earth (Jade, who saved Earth + plants + green + oh my god).
>Oxalis: It's a flower that looks like a candy cane.
* Davejadesprite = Saros
>Saros: A period of about 18 years between repetitions of solar and lunar eclipses.
* Calliroxysprite = Mojito
>Mojito: It's a "candy alcoholic drink", made with white rum, sugar, *lime juice*, soda water, and mint.
* Aratavsprite = Cornelius/Cornelia
>Cornelius/Cornelia: Means "horn" in Latin :) Cornelius=masculine, Cornelia=feminine.
* Nepquiusprite = Witten, Kamala
>Witten: Masculin Germanic name that means "Pale person" (also "Blonde" but ignore that part).
>Kamala: Hawaiian femminine name that means both "Lotus" and "pale red".
* Vriskansprite = Kyanite
>Kyanite: Blue-Green gemstone that has healing properties (allegedly), useful for low blood pressure, relief from physical pain, as well as a mind-calmer for trauma-recovery.

Banished! To The Horse Realm
(page 1328-1348)
Tumblr media
One thing about whatever far future planet this is taking place on is they have the Kool-Aid Man. Perhaps a true constant of all worlds.
As it hurtles towards the finish line, this intermission hits maybe its three best jokes all in a row. Following all the other time powers we’ve learned about, Cans’ being that he clocks you makes me so mad. Honestly the joke would work even if he just punched really well, but, it gets followed up with Diamonds Droog grocery shopping and the Spirited Horse calendar.
Droog grocery shopping is funny to me because imagining any of these guys going about their day to day lives is funny. The knowledge that their city has cars and grocery stores opens up so many possibilities. Do these guys have families or roommates or perhaps even pets? I can imagine Diamonds Droog with a wife and kids but I can also imagine Droog living in a cool bachelor pad with Slick where they share groceries. Do they have hobbies outside violence, porn and playing cards? There’s also casinos, so do Slick and Deuce meet up for a whiskey on the rocks over the craps table every Thursday? Is this true of the Felt too? Do Eggs and Biscuits have day jobs working in an actual kitchen? Does Stitch freelance as a ballgown designer? This is what the next intermission will be about hopefully.
Tumblr media
Anyway the edits of Hearts Boxcars into each month of the Spirited Horse character is an all timer. Imagine you’re trying to take some justified revenge on a rival until they banish you to the farmland to atone for your crimes. Cans’ powers are probably the worst to be on the receiving end of, and might have the longest term impact (besides Snowman’s). Like, what if Boxcars had plans? He probably had a concert lined up for next month, and maybe his daughter has a big birthday coming up?
There’s another Problem Sleuth reference where Boxcars hurls Eggs’ torso towards Cans ‘in an attempt to placate him with the red meat’ (p.1333) under a flashing gif reading ‘BATTLE TECHNIQUE: TORSO FLAIL’, which links to Problem Sleuth page 218, where Ace Dick tries the same move on a nearby beast. While Ace Dick is successful in placating the beast with the red meat, it doesn’t work for Boxcars (leading to horse antics). The Midnight Crew originally came from Problem Sleuth bonus content, and have interacted with them in Homestuck canon (p.833), so it’s fun to think that they’re beholden to the laws of the PS universe as well as the HS universe, or a hybrid between them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the good goofs things get very real, very quickly. Slick wrenches open the safe with the crowbar despite Clover’s warnings, proving he was able to risk any amount of bad luck and also the lives of his own gang in order to get to English’s secret treasure. Like either Slick is just this ruthless all the time and willing to throw his friends under the bus at a moment’s notice, or this is the ONE cause he is ride or die for.
I would lean towards the second option because it seems like the vault used to belong to Slick himself, judging by the spade scanner and Slick’s arm holding the code to get inside. And I would guess this is some Skaian technology since Slick and his barcode were likely programmed on the ominous planet. I’ve noted before how a construct who looks like Boxcars is carrying a safe that looks like English’s on page 957 – could this be Jack Noir’s equivalent safe? Back when Spades Slick oversaw the affairs of a dark kingdom, he owned this safe and keeps something important in it; Snowman knows this because she was there too, and while she can’t get inside, she can betray Slick by giving the safe to English? Maybe??
If so, she really doesn’t want him getting back in, or she’s just pissed off with him and taking revenge in general. She looks extremely cool standing framed in the doorway holding a gun – the circle of white behind her looks like a giant cue ball guiding her plans from behind. They have a cool but brief fight and she teleports away, locking him in the vault.
I mean. Clover did warn him about the bad luck.
But now I understand why there was just an extended conversation between Slick and Droog about the right-left eye and the sprites’ abilities to face in different directions.
By brute force destroying the entire mansion (including 1000 clocks) and killing every character except three, this intermission has managed to tie up most of its threads, except for the two biggest open questions: what is in this safe, and who is Lord English?

long post about the 10/8 update incoming!!!!!!!
ok i dont usually post my thoughts on updates bwcause im the number one adhd rambler of all time but here we go.. you get to read them today!!!!!!! SO. one of my big HSBC theories is that Ult Rose is actually the mastermind of sorts behind the whole story. not in an evil way, because dirk isnt even evil, just in the way that she knows a lot more than shes letting on!!! and that dirk and al might not be the only ones with real influence here. this theory was first thought up by my friend @classpectpokerap and its called the "Gloves are Canon" theory and you can read about it more in-depth here and here! as a fun challenge go back and read the epilogues and early hs2 (and also new updates) with the idea that rose knows more than we think. youll get some really fun stuff out of it and hopefully youll be convinced :p
SO ANYWAYS. how does this concern the 10/8 anniversary update?
HOO BOY
first of all, lets get a few content warnings and things outta the way. this lil analysis is gonna talk about some suicidal characters and suicidal ideation so plz !! be warned!!
first off, we know that Ult Dirk is really just afraid. hes not scary or intimidating at all, to the reader, because he killed himself in one timeline and hes really just trying to do it again. he even says this in the epilogues- that he hopes his death is Just when it comes, and he hopes its dave that does it. dirk feels as though he doesnt belong- hes always felt this way. he thinks the world and his friends would be better off without him, and his last gift to them is to create a new universe where they can start fresh outside of lord english's influence for good. he might be the most obnoxious narrator on earth c, claiming that he knows whats best and that hes doing right by everyone and by you, as the reader. but the TAGLINE of the epilogues are "tales of dubious authenticity". it tells you from the start that youre dealing with the worlds most unreliable narrator here. a guy who says one thing, says hes fine, puts on a mask to make himself seem stronger, but is always harboring the most pain. who also thinks this way?
rose fuckin lalonde!!!!! this isnt just beyond canon either. try and count how many times she did some suicide mission shit in og homestuck. and how non chalant she was about every single one. this character trait stuck around, and its especially clear in the 10/8 update.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and who does she reference, saying that he made the right choice to kill himself?
Tumblr media
bam. this miserable motherfucker wants Out.
notice how she doesnt say "kill himself". she says LEAVE. as if she knows ult dirk is in the other timeline, alive and well. as if she knows that she could have done that too. made the right choice. the canon choice.
but what does that mean, in terms of Gloves are Canon? well, if you read the gloves are canon theory part 2, it states how at the beginning of candy, rose's ult self visions completely went away supposedly, but by the time HSBC picked up last year, theyre back...and worse?
how? its only been a few days, in universe.
was she lying about them being gone? is it the influence of having the Light, the Narrative, the Eyes of the Reader back on her now that the comic is going again? was she ulted the whole time just like dirk and we dont know it?
Tumblr media
to the reader, the rosemary breakup in both timelines was a destruction of rose's character. but to rose.....its what she thinks kanaya deserves. rose thinks kanaya deserves a life without her. rose thinks shes BETTER OFF without her. and maybe deep down she thinks the whole timeline, and the whole universe, is better off without her too.
just like ult dirk.
i have a lot of thoughts on the other two parts of the update, but i wanted to focus on the concept of ult rose with this post because. god. idk her whole section was so potent and not only confirmed my theory, but just made me feel sick!! /pos

Fraymotif Introductory Megapost
Wow, cool, an intro post.
This is a Homestuck blog, with a lot of spoilers. A LOT.
This is your warning.
So what’s this all about?
Fraymotifs are powerful battle techniques used by Sburb's Heroes. They are basically super god-like combo attacks between multiple Heroes of differing aspects. In canon, they are shown to be 2 to 3 player combos, but it is theorized that they can include up to 12 players.
Interactions between Classpects
The way I look at Fraymotifs is as a synergy between synergies. A Hero’s Class is how they interact with their own Aspect, while a Fraymotif is how two or more Heroes interact with each other’s Classpects (Jade, a Witch of Space, changing the space in which Dave’s, a Knight of Time, protection through time is used into a single concentrated bubble; slowing time within a bubble around Bec Noir via Adagio Redshift).
My Goal with this very ambitious blog
There are 144 unique Mythological Roles (Classpects) within Sburb, and a Fraymotif involves 2+ of them. Let’s do the math for a second. The equation to figure out the number of combinations there are between r elements of a set of n items, ignoring differing permutations, is: C(n,r)=n!/(r!(n−r)!). So, 144 choose 2 comes out to be 10,296. That's actually 10 thousand different Fraymotifs for just combos of two Heroes. It shoots up to 400k+ once you include combinations of 3. There’s probably a lot less when you disclude combos between Heroes of the same Aspect, but its still an astronomical number. On top of that, there are at LEAST 36 single-Aspect Fraymotifs, meant to be used by a single Hero, and I do not wish to cover those, simply as a personal preference for what I find interesting. Sorry, I’ve got enough on my plate with the 10k+ I already intend to do, and those are at least wacky goofy combos.
I wish to at least cover what I think ALL 2-Player Fraymotifs there can be, in this blog. That is over ten thousand, so I will be covering many at a time within a post. There also may be more than one possible Fraymotif per Aspect-Combo, but for the sake of brevity (the irony is not lost on me) I will limit it such that each Pair of Classpects only get 1 Fraymotif assigned to them. That narrows it down to a measly 9504, and I do not feel sorry for making each of them special.
I don’t know if I will have the brainpower to cover 3+ Player Fraymotifs as thoroughly, so I will only cover them upon request! So please ask if you really wish for my take! I will be glad to nerd out some more. Hell, you can ask pretty much anything you want about my efforts, that's what the askbox is for (^-^)b
The Fraymotif design process
This will develop the longer I run this blog, but as it stands now, I start by analyzing the Classpects of each Hero involved and take note of their abilities in their own right. Witch of Space naturally has control over the properties of physical Space so their abilities could localize and/or expand the area of effect of other physical powers, stuff like that. Of course, this requires a comprehensive understanding of Classpecting first. Classpecting as a magic system is defined in-world by flawed/biased narrators, so most of it is left up to interpretation. As a Mage of Heart myself, I am very Classpecting-pilled, and I feel as though I grasp the concept very naturally. For areas in which my understanding is a bit thin, I do like to reference Ouroborista’s take on the system, and I am especially fond of the Class symmetry proposed therein, albeit a bit contested throughout the community. But hey, most of it is up to interpretation anyway, so if you disagree, please let me know in the asks, I would love to hear your opinions! Classpecting is all symbology lol.
Next I look at how the abilities of the Heroes interact with each other, obviously. A Witch of Space localizes the time powers of a Knight of Time, and constructively interferes with the powers’ purpose of protecting, keeping the Target trapped in a bubble separated from the outside world (Adagio Redshift). A Seer of Mind may use the Knight of Time’s protection as a guide to see through the various alternate outcomes to find a version of events where things went a little better, and the Knight would then lock-on to that timeline to bring their partner to refuge, perhaps re-doing a section they struggled on before (Assylum Dal Segno). It is mostly a case-by-case basis, but a HUGE part of Fraymotifs are the Motifs themselves, that is to say, a theme or recurring element. The motive behind a power or ability. A Knight of Time would have access to Time shenanigans (That’s the theme of their powers), but the leading motive behind them will be for Protection, even though they are a solid combatant by themselves.
Edit: I forgot to mention that while non-godtiers are able to use Fraymotifs (See: Dave and Terezi with Assylum Dal Segno in [S] Collide), I will be designing these under the assumption that all participants are godtier. Some Fraymotifs will be simple, despite everyone's access to their full godtier kit, but seriously there's 9.5k of them they can't all be perfect.
There are obviously a few Fraymotifs that are defined in canon. But I mean. Come on. Canon is a tangible thing that can be messed with in Homestuck, and mess with it I shall. There are 11 2-Player Fraymotifs that we see in HS, and when you treat June and Rose’s and Dave and Terezi’s duplicates as a single Fraymotif each (as I will because they are consistent in how they utilize the abilities despite a different graphic (well, except for Rose and Roxy but that’s a whole different beast I will address in the next section)), that lowers it down to 7-technically-8 Fraymotifs that have been shown, and only 4 of those are named. I will try to keep-in-line with the Fraymotifs we actually do see, and interpret them in a way that matches the tone with the rest of the ones I design, because its 7-technically-8 out of 9.5 thousand, and I don’t see you out here doing this.
Following that is the fun part -- the name. Fraymotifs are music-themed, and thus have music-themed name schemes. Ivories in the Fire (Heir of Breath + Knight of Time), Mixolydian Maelstrom (Heir of Breath + Seer of Light), Fantasia's Inhale (Heir of Breath + Witch of Space), and Adagio Redshift (Witch of Space + Knight of Time), to name a few (that’s actually all of the named ones in-world). So keeping with that theme, I will come up with equally badass and/or ethereal names for the other 9.5k. Such as: Assylum Dal Segno (Knight of Time + Seer of Mind), Sostenuto Spotlight (Knight of Light + Mage of Heart), Flash Sforzando (Page of Light + Mage of Heart), etc.
Preemptively addressing my personal biases
Hussie outright stated that before the events of [S] Collide, Fraymotifs were a piece of throwaway worldbuilding, and are referenced as a hard magic system, despite the fact that it is anything but. This frustrates me to my core, like, fricking, for example: Both of June and Rose’s Fraymotifs shown in [S] Collide can be interpreted as the aforementioned Mixolydian Maelstrom, which is just varying forms of attacking with wind and lasers. And Dave and Terezi’s (Assylum Dal Segno) can both be interpreted as allowing a Target refuge in another, better timeline, because they both either bring Dirk back or send themselves to another timeline and both are actually part of the same series of events. So that’s all fine. But. The Lalondes. Rose and Roxy have two separate Fraymotifs together, one where Roxy does a Voidey thing and removes the nonexistence of a bunch of perfectly generic objects in a laser-cube made by Rose, and another where they just do a bunch of Aspect-related attacks.
In fact, a lot of Rose’s powers seem to just be “lighty magic attack:” when that is far from her role as a Seer, and goes against that whole “leading motive” theme I brought up earlier. It seems that she was just around to do laser stuff. Which is cool! In a fast-paced epic fight sequence! I liked it! But I want to get a bit more creative with these, moving past the “they hit them a lot with their Aspect” for those Classpects where they can do so much more than that. I said that canon was something to be messed with, and I’m going to tweak things as I see necessary because there are 7-technically-8 that are shown out of the 9.5 thousand I’m going to do so who cares.
Another thing I want to bring up goes more into the Classpecting side of Fraymotif design. In the 12 Aspects, they are aligned along the Time-Space axis, but something that I rarely see focused on is the Breath-Blood axis. Time and Space rule the physical world, but Breath and Blood rule the nonphysical world in a way I find really cool and interesting. I see Breath and Blood operating not only under their commonly understood Freedom/Bonds mechanics, but also messing around with causality. I think that Blood is very fate/destiny-coded and that Breath is very unrestricted from such matters. Karkat and Kankri both had a personal arc based around the fate/destiny of their people, and feeling responsible for it when all that got messed up, while Tavros and Rufioh both had a personal arc about becoming detached from who they were “supposed to be”, June especially becoming fully detached from deterministic causality with her retcon powers being able to mess with past events without dooming the timeline (and her being removed from who she was due to that broblorone making her transfem). You may be thinking “Oh, but Doom is for outcomes and fate” but really only with destruction and bad endings. Hope and Rage deal with positive/negative emotion but Heart does ALL emotion indiscriminately. When chopping up the whole universe into just 12 pieces (13 if you count Piss. (I do not count Piss.)), there’s going to be some overlap on account of there being more than 12 Things in the universe. Them’s the breaks.
Last thing here is the names. A lot of people, and I mean a LOT of people, look at Hero-specific names as being taken from a pool of words that have to deal with their Aspect. Like, a lot of people will interpret the name Ivories in the Fire (Heir of Breath + Knight of Time) as having the components "Ivories" + "in the Fire", where "Ivories" is a "Breathy word" and "in the Fire" is a "Timey word" and will just toss them around until there are like 50 "X in the Fire" Fraymotifs. I'm not a huge fan of that. Another way this is seen is in Land names, where people will read "Land of Maps and Treasure" and will automatically throw in "Maps" into a big grab-bag of Light words and "Treasure" into a separate bag of Thief words, as if this was a cheap flash name generator instead of a deeply specific thematic choice. Perhaps I'm being melodramatic (very real chance there), but I think that each name should be about what the Fraymotif does more than what it's made of. "Redshift" isnt specifically a Space word or a Time word, it's a phenomenon that is deeply tied to both Space and Time, and Adagio is a reference to the time-slowing effect of the Fraymotif. Obviously, with 9.5 thousand to come up with, there will be a lot of names that are similar, but they'll be on a case-by-case basis.
How in the world will I go about posting all of this?
There’s over ten thousand of these damn things, so I will come up with a whole bunch in one go, and make that one post, tagged appropriately ofc. These posts will be queued, so there will be at most 1 per day, and any asks will be answered as soon as I get them, skipping the queue (unless your request is in the queue, then you gotta wait :p).
There will be many Fraymotifs per post on some posts, like 15+ 12 max, so there will be at least 1.7-ish 2 years before this blog is full-up on Fraymotifs. Wack.
Edit: fixed the stats
Alright, thanks for reading, again please ask anything in the askbox, and I hope you enjoy my handiwork B)

this is the first time that ive heard about the debate re: interfering with conditional immortality? if you dont mind explaining, whats up with the debate? like why is it a thing?
the text is deliberately inexplicit about what the enchanted clock actually does; whether it innately has some magical property which allows it to decide whether a god lives or dies, or if it just 'tells the time', so to speak - the resurrection process happens independent of the physical clock, and the hand just points to whatever option was going to happen anyway.
Vriska's first death plays with this ambiguity on purpose. Jack strikes the clock with an item that we understand has enchantment-nullifying properties, the hand lands on the closest option by way of gravity, and that seems to be it - Vriska dies. but because we don't even know what the clock is doing to begin with, it's not actually clear what the sequence of events is - did Vriska die because Jack nullified the clock when the hand was already hovering over the Just side? or did the clock just stop working right as Vriska was going to die anyway? again, this ambiguity is ON PURPOSE: Vriska by her very nature shines a light on the absurdity of trying to fit a real person into such rigid categories as 'hero' and 'villain'. Hussie had pretty much exactly this to say when asked about it in 2011:
The clock did appear to lean "just" an instant before, and there are plenty of ways to argue in favor of a just death. There are many mitigating factors as well to supply a counter argument. It would not be that interesting if it were absolutely unambiguous, where everyone could all easily agree that her death was just. Or if everyone agreed there was no justice in it at all. There are enough factors in play where you have reason to think about it a bit, and such that it leaves plenty to discuss. You may consider the evidence and draw a conclusion. You may even feel very strongly about your conclusion! But for either the story, or me, to provide a categorically "right answer", immediately following the establishment of all the things that made it interesting to consider, shortchanges all that, I believe. For the clock to settle unceremoniously on "just" I feel would come across as a nonconstructive, compact ethical lecture, quickly nullifying all there was to evaluate and talk about.
but because popular readership has a really hard time with anything ambiguous, the common interpretation of this scene simply came to be that Jack killed Vriska by fucking with the clock. boo!
the issue has been mitigated by various factors since this event, no doubt many of which are in some way references or callbacks to this original controversy. firstly, Aranea getting her "Lucky 8r8k!!!!!!!!" when Jade dies a Just death after a building falls on her. this has widely been referred to as Aranea "manipul8ing" the result of the clock, because there are actually a couple of competing ambiguities here which readers have tried to sand down simultaneously:
they have arbitrarily conflated Aranea's mind control powers with Vriska's suite of Thief of Light powers
many choose to take it as read that "luck" is actually a 'real thing' in the world of Homestuck, and that Heroes of Light are somehow genuinely able to alter reality by manipulating it. if a really lucky person like Vriska or Aranea finds a dollar coin on the sidewalk, it is because their luck somehow made that coin appear there - this is certainly one possible way in which "luck" could work if it were 'real', but Homestuck is far more interested in asking this question than answering it
they have a really hard time believing that Jade 'deserved' to die, because she was being 'mind controlled' (this is a whole debate of its own) and therefore not 'really' 'evil' and therefore her death can't 'really' have been 'Just'. because once again, they think the Heroic/Just system of conditional immortality is some objective thesis on morality, and that the world of Homestuck actually has rigid laws determining who 'counts' as a 'hero' or a 'villain' - but again, this is a question that Homestuck is asking, not a statement it is making!
this all comes to a head with the climax of Caliborn's arc in Act 7, where he destroys the god tier clock and absorbs the resulting rainbow energies of immortality - implicitly one of the boons given unto him by Yaldabaoth which allows him to become immortal and everpresent throughout time. this case is harder to make a definitive argument about, because it is certainly true that Caliborn destroying the god tier clock symbolises his nullifying its effects and thus overcoming death. but there are other factors to be taken into account:
the result of nullifying the clock's enchantment is not internally consistent. when Jack breaks the clock, Vriska stays dead - thus implying, possibly, that a) the clock is responsible for bringing gods back to life. but when Caliborn breaks the clock, (we are to assume, at least for the sake of argument) he becomes immortal - implying that b) the clock is responsible for killing gods. both of these things cannot be simultaneously true; if a) is true, then Caliborn, having destroyed the clock, must stay dead after being killed. if b) is true, then Vriska, having the clock's effects negated, should have access to unlimited restorative powers. we must assume that the truth is a little more nuanced or - God forbid - metaphorical than either of these two things.
my last anon refers to "slick beating up vriskas [clock]" and "caliborn [...] destroying his" - implying a clock for each god which the savvy trickster might be able to individually interfere with in order to disrupt immortality judgements on a case-by-case basis. but of course this isn't how it works: so far as we can observe, there's a single clock in Scratch's apartment that presides over all of the comic's judgements, and so there's no reason to believe Caliborn's clock is in any way entirely his own; presumably, it's the same one he will later use as decor when he becomes Scratch. so whatever he does to the clock at his point in the timeline should remain true along the clock's entire timeline - he can't just destroy it 'for himself' and nobody else. at least not in any way that can be taken 100% literally.
Jake 'disrupting' Jade's judgement in 8r8k is just another entry in this same vein... except, like, without any of the real moral ambiguities? I don't think anyone's arguing that being a cheater puts adult Jade in any way the same kind of ethical quagmire as Vriska or werewolf Jade, LOL, nor do I think there's any seriously strong reason to believe that being shot in the head from a distance while standing still generating a force field is a Heroic death either. so nudging Jade's death from 'probably neutral' to 'definitely neutral' - if that's what we're supposed to interpret as what's literally happening -doesn't really come across as a particularly awesome display of Jake's power, here; but Naked White Jake in general is a whole new can of worms that the comic hasn't even had the opportunity to start opening yet, so I'm reserving my analysis on that for now.

Whitestuck is canon, anyone who says otherwise are coping and lying. Its fact majority didn't actually read the comic or skimmed through it. It's pretty much explicitly stated with the kids being referred to as "pink monkeys" multiple times, and other occasions with them getting described as pale. In more detailed artwork within the comic, show their hair and facial features. Not to mention the stereotypes the characters embody, making them obvious parodies of nerdy white kids.
There are no trans characters in base homestuck, it's never hinted or implied with anyone. No one shows that they struggle with their gender identity, we see them as babies, they are fully comfortable living as the gender they were born as. The issue is Hussie has a weak spine and can't actually stand on anything and will change things for crowd pleasing bitchy people. Brownie points, he's a hack.
Now that I've gotten your attention person who wants to tell me im wrong answer me this:
It's shown both Striders would show off porngraphy to anyone who asks, regardless of age or who there are. Dave showed off a comic he stated to be "borderline pornographic" to Terezi when she stated she was 6 and showed it off anyway telling her to keep it a secret. He made Karkat draw dicks and would snuggle and kiss WV despite him being mute meaning he couldn't actually consent to this. Dirk drew porn of his friends for some random guy he didn't really know and was trying to encourage the art to be more explicit. Theres his creation brobot which not only physically assaults his friend but also sexually. Why would Hussie make a parallel about the Striders pushing sexual boundaries? Do you guys think if homestuck didn't encounter the end of the world and the characters lived their lives on earth would the Striders commit sexual assault on the basis of this information? You know, Considering how nonchalant they are about it. I would like to know your thoughts on this idea.
Everything is on point. And yeah, Dave and Dirk are the actual sexual harassers. People bitch about Jade Harley being too forward of wanting sex in Epilogues or Eridan being an incel creep, when it was someone like Dave Strider who was the real pervert who showed his horniness to a blind girl and a veteran soldier. The only reason people like Dave and Dirk get a pass because of the whole gay thing for someone, despite that it's not homophobic for guys to be uncomfortable if a homosexual comes onto them without their consent. But hey, this series also allowed rape via Mindfang and Dolorosa and age gap lesbian romance like Meenah and Vriska. So maybe the series is saying same sex assault is fine because it is LGBT.

I associate cringe is dead solely with “people refusing to engage with homestuck as a literary work bcz they see it as cringey/ embarrassing” , what context were you referring to?
i had to think about how to phrase this as precisely as possible to make it clear that my problem is not with the general idea of engaging with art with sincere, unabased enjoyment. since the phrase is so broad, that it honestly covers a wide array of behaviors that are largely contextual depending on the context its used lol. know what i mean?
anyway, there's a slim margin using it and similar terms ("no ethical consumption under capitalism" became an excuse for people to sell-out shamelessly, instead of driving people to take a look at how they exploit each other as a consequence of living under capitalism) as cover for unabashed conspicuous consumption. in a perverse and crass way, people try to turn consumerism and gleeful participation in the vile ethics of capitalism into a sort of activism and the entire thing makes me sick. i think it should be ok to level criticism and maybe even a few pointed jabs at people who can only relate to art if they can buy some stupid shit from it to posses.
but also realistically, it a subset of people so small that it really isnt something worth caring about beyond being annoyed at knowing they exist. also of course i think a lot of shit is annoying. im 30 or 40 years old!!!! everything is annoying!!!
