The Lady in the Black Leather (Ch 21)

Catch up here [chapter 20]

Aiden x Scarlett, Graham McTavish, Reader

You, Aiden & Scarlett visit for a while, then Graham shows up with a pretty bouquet of brightly colored daisies and mums with a big sunflower in the middle of it, and a tray with two coffee cups and a brown paper bag in the other hand. He had a ‘get well’ balloon also for you, which was tied to the vase of flowers.

You giggle and thank him for them. He grins and sets the flowers and balloon down on the windowsill next to the ones from Aiden and Scarlett.

He comes and gives you a little hug and kisses your forehead. “How’s my girl doin?” he asks.

You grin, “Don’t let Rich hear you say that!” you tease.

He grins, “Well, me and Gwen laid claim to ya before Rich did, so he’ll have to just deal with it.” He says cheekily, making you giggle. “So, how are ya doin?” he asks.

You shrug. “Tired, my leg hurts, and I’m hungry.” you reply and grin when he sets a bag on the table and hands you a french vanilla cappuccino from the tray.

“Well, breakfast is here now, so at least ya won’t be hungry anymore.” He chuckles. “Don’t they have ya on pain meds?” he asks you.

“Yeah, but I told the nurse I didn’t want them till I had some breakfast in me. I’ll get them in a bit.” You tell Graham.

Grinning, you dig into the bag, seeing pastries like what Todd has delivered each morning. You look up at Graham. “Where did you get these from? They look like the ones Todd has delivered each morning at the shop!” you ask.

He grins. “I got them from the pastry shop that he gets his from. They asked why his shop was closed and then saw the note Rich left on the door this morning. They said to tell ye and Todd that they wish ye both a speedy recovery!” he says with a smile

You grin and take a bite of a strawberry scone and let out a happy little groan. “I love these ones! These and the doughnuts with the icing and the strawberry or cherry fillings! OOOooohhh they are the BEST!” you giggle.

There’s a knock at the door and a young lady is standing at the door with two big bouquets of flowers. “Excuse me Miss, but are you Harley?” she asks.

You nod. “Yes.”

She comes in and tells you, “These are for you. Where would you like them?” She asks.

Your jaw drops. One bouquet is two dozen red and pink roses with baby’s breath and purple lavender filler. The other is a bouquet of 6 yellow roses, brightly colored fuji mums and daisies that were colored brightly with food coloring.

Scarlett gets up and takes the bouquet of red and pink roses. She sets it down on the table and looks for a card. “Aaahhh! Here it is!” she says and hands you the card.

You open it up and see it’s from Richard. “For the love of my life. You mean the world to me, Sweetheart. I hope these brighten your day. I’m thinking about you & know I love you more than anything in the universe! Xoxo – Rich”

You grin and show it to Graham, Aiden & Scarlett. They all smile, and Scarlett puts the card back on the plastic stand and Graham takes the bouquet and puts it on the windowsill next to the other ones.

The delivery gal hands Scarlett the other big bouquet and then heads out to do more deliveries after you thank her for bringing them up.

Scarlett digs around in the bouquet and finds another card. She hands it to you, and you open it up to see it is from the Police Department that Alex, Todd and Jack worked for. It said, “Heard what happened, wishing you a speedy recovery! Our thoughts and prayers are with you! – Inspector Kathleen Walsh & your friends at the NYPD 19th Precinct.”

You look at Graham and Scarlett in surprise. “The police department sent me flowers?” Graham chuckles. “Apparently so Sweetheart!”

You shake your head in disbelief. “Well, that was nice!” you state.

They all nod. Graham takes the flowers and puts them on the windowsill as well. “You’re getting quite the collection, Sweetie!” Scarlett teases you.

You grin. “They’re making my room smell nice, that’s for sure!” you say, grinning.

Your doctor knocks on the door casing and then steps in. He talks with you for a bit and checks the wounds on your leg after shooing everyone out into the hall.

He asks you about all the scars on your legs and you explain they go all the way up onto your crotch. You tell him that the ones on your legs were from your last three boyfriends you had before meeting Richard. And you tell him the ones on your crotch were from the ex-boyfriend, Ben, who shot you. You ask him to make a note of you telling him that to put in your medical file. That you don’t want anyone thinking it was Richard who gave you them. You explain you never had reported the abuse from your ex boyfriends because of fear since the ex-boyfriends had all threatened you that if you told they’d go after you and your family. He nods in understanding and makes a note of it in your file.

He tells you that he doesn’t want you walking on the leg for a few days, and that you may use the crutches ONLY to get from your bed to the restroom in your room and then back to your bed for now. You nod. He asks if you need any stronger pain meds and you shake your head.

“I’m due for them when the nurse comes back with them. I told her I wanted to wait to take them till I had some breakfast in me first.” You reply.

He nods and tells you he will check in with you tomorrow morning then and tells you to have a good day.

Your friends come back in after the Doctor leaves and they have another two bouquets. You roll your eyes and giggle. “Now who are these from?” you ask.

Graham sets a small oblong flowerpot on the table with Hyacinths, tulips, daffodils and crocuses on the table in front of you. You grin and take a deep breath. “Oooohhh! Those smell wonderful!!!” you pull the card off the flower pick and read it. It’s from Captain Angel L. Figueroa Jr. & the NYPD 1st precinct and says: “Wishing you a speedy recovery, Harley! Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you recover!”

“Awwww! That’s sweet!” you say and put the card back on the flower pick.

Scarlett takes the planter and puts in on the shelf by the sink so you can smell them when people open the door to enter and exit.

The other bouquet is pink and white stargazer lilies and hot pink roses and lighter pink carnations with some greens. You look at the card and see it’s from Lee Pace. It reads: “Wishing you a speedy recovery and hope you and Phantom are doing well.”

“Oh! Those smell lovely too! It’s gonna smell like a flower shop in here!’ you giggle.

Graham and Aiden chuckle and Graham adds the flowers to your collection on the windowsill.

Scarlett looks at the time and nudges Aiden, who glances up at the clock and sees they need to get going to the studios. “We gotta get going, Harley. I gotta film some scenes this afternoon, and Scarlett’s gonna go check on the shop for you and Todd.” He tells you.

They both give you a hug and tell you they will see you later on. You wave goodbye and they head out.

The nurse comes in with your pain meds. “Are you ready for your meds, Harley?”

You nod and she gives them to you. You down them with your water and she makes a note in your chart on the hospital’s computer. Then she heads out after seeing if you needed anything.

You look at Graham and say, “Now what do we do?”

He chuckles. “Well, what would you like to do?”

You shrug. “I don’t know. Graham, can you tell me about your family? I don’t even know their names, you said your wife told you to tell me ‘welcome to the family’.” You said. “You must’ve been telling her about me.”

He chuckled. “Aye, Lass, I told her ‘bout you. How I met you, and how I was tryin’ to hook ya up with Rich. She wanted to see what ya looked like, so I sent her the pics I took.” He explained. “Didn’t want her worrying if the Papparazzi snuck photos of us when we all do stuff together.

Scarlet told me your parents died a few years ago and I mentioned it to Gwen… It was her idea, actually, to ‘adopt’ you, so to speak.” He giggled. Gwen is my wife. Our two daughters are Hope and Honor.” He tells you, “Honor was born in 2006 and Hope was born in 2012.” He says beaming with pride. “I’ll show you pics of them later.” He says. “They live in New Zealand where we have a house.” He tells you.

You look at him surprised. “I thought you were from Scotland, though?” you ask.

He chuckles. “I am, Lass, but I’ve lived all over the world. We decided to settle in New Zealand, though, after living there while we filmed The Hobbit.” He explained.

“Oh! I saw a lot of the bonus features on my Extended Edition DVD’s of the Hobbit. It looks absolutely wonderful! It’s on my bucket list of places to visit someday.” You tell him with a big grin.

He chuckles, “Well, Lass. I’m sure Rich wouldn’t bat an eye taking you to come visit us there. He loved it there as much as we did and considered buying property there, but he’s so busy with filming and such, he said he’d rather wait till he got older and started to slow down with work.” Graham tells you.

“Graham?” you ask.

“Yeah, Sweetheart?” he replies.

“I want to do something special for Rich, but I don’t know what to do. He doesn’t like to talk about himself, so trying to find out what kinds of things he likes, I’m finding is rather difficult. Do you think you could help me?” you ask. “I know he likes chocolate ice cream, wine, legos and reading. But that’s about it.”

Graham chuckles. “Yeah, he is an introvert and shy, so whenever people ask him personal questions, he tends to shy away from them.” He tells you. He gives you a few ideas of things Richard would like and suggests to just be observant, “You’ll learn more about him from just observing and listening, than from anything else, Lass.

He’s moody and grumpy sometimes, but don’t let it get to you. It’s just how he gets into characters he portrays. He’ll often take them home with him and struggle to let ‘em go. Maybe having you around will help ‘im with that, Lass.” Graham tells you.

“There’s so much I don’t know about the film industry.” You sigh. “I’ve never seen how one is made from start to finish. He asked if I’d come with him when he travels for the promotional stuff for the film too. I’ve never traveled very much tho. He said something about finding out the details for taking Phantom with too, so I’d feel safe.” You tell Graham.

Graham grins. “It would be nice for him to have ye with, Lass. I know I’d enjoy having you with us. My wife and kids don’t travel much with me. It’s such a long flight from New Zealand to the US and Europe that they don’t make it very often to join me for premieres. It’s a whirlwind of a time, and is exhausting, but it’s a lot of fun too. You get to meet a lot of people and just sit back, relax and talk about the film with interviewers. If you do come with, we’ll be sure ya are well taken care of.” He tells you.

You giggle and grin. “Graham, did you get my dress from Aiden’s? Don’t let Rich know anything about the dress. I don’t want him to see it or see me in it until he picks me up for the event! I want it to be a surprise!” you tell him.

He gives you a positively evil smirk and says, “Your wish, is my command, Sweetie. And yes, I picked it up from Aiden’s last night before I headed home. It’s in my closet in my bedroom, which he won’t dare go into. Scarlett said I should hang it up so it wouldn’t crease the velvet.” He tells you. “I’ll take ye to go have it altered to fit ye when they let ye outta here.” He says.

You grin and happily clap your hands. “I can’t wait!

Graham chuckles and rubs his beard, thinking.

“Graham, do you ever do Skype or Zoom or FaceTime your family? You’re always saying I remind you of your daughters.” You tell him. “I thought it would be nice to say hi to them and talk with them and your wife, if it was okay with you. I don’t know how the time differences work between there and here though.” You mention to him.

He glances up at the clock and you can see him working out the time differences in his head.

“Well, Lass, it’s about 1am there right now. Well, if ya can wait till around 3 or 4 pm our time this afternoon which should be able to give them time to get up and get ready, then we can give them a zoom call, we’ll say “Hi” and I’ll introduce ya to them!” he tells you.

“For now, though, what do ya want to do?” he asks. Phantom comes over and sniffs all the flowers on the windowsill and ‘wuffs’ at them.

“What? Don’t you like all my pretty flowers, Phantom?” you ask. He chuffs and comes walking over to your bedside. Graham smiles and gives him a good scratch. “Do ya need to go outside, Boy?” he asks.

Phantom gives a short yip and Graham stands up. “I’ll go take him out to do his business, then we’ll be right back, Sweetheart. Did someone take him out last night or this morning?” he asked.

“I don’t know. Maybe the officer had one of the nurses take Phantom out. You’d have to ask him.” You tell Graham.

He nods and clips the leash on Phantom after he adjusts the service jacket. They head out and Graham stops to talk with the officer. The officer tells him he had one of the nurses take Phantom outside when he needed to go to the bathroom, and she brought him right back up. He did say they played with the rope toy for a bit having a tug of war.

Graham chuckled. “All right. Well, we’ll be back in a bit.” He tells the officer.

I’ve finally submitted my final essay of my nursing degree, however, I still need to sit my final exam. But that will come in August as I was not in the right frame of mind to sit it yesterday (Friday). Posts will still be sporadic, but we are coming to the final chapter in this arc of the story. I do plan to follow Claire through her uni career though, so we’re not completely done with this family yet.

CHAPTER 13

Claire and Jamie managed to sneak away before lunch while everyone was occupied with other things. Murtagh was playing with Fergus, Brian was having a snooze, Willie and Ellen were battling it out in the kitchen like they did every year, Rabbie was tackling his model train kit from Claire, Louise was calling her family and Jenny and Ian were out in the stables.

“I can’t believe your dad did it,” Claire said as she lay her head on Jamie’s shoulder. “I thought it was a bit weird earlier when he started calling him Fergus, but I didn’t want to call him out on it.”

“I ken, Sorcha,” Jamie replied, his fingers playing with Claire’s curls. “I had nae idea he had it planned. I was goin’ tae ask him if I could tell Jenny an’ Willie at least about Fergus after the holidays were past.”

“But he beat you to it,” Claire finished. “You know you have another family member as well? Me.”

“What d’ye mean, Sassenach?”

“Your mum has told me that I’m a part of this family forever,” Claire explained. “Jenny has apparently chosen me as her sister, so your mum has accepted me into the family. Told me that there is always a bed here for me. Even if we don’t work out.”

“I don’ think that’s goin’ tae be a problem,” Jamie said with a smirk. “Yer in m’ bones no’, there’s nae way yer getting’ rid o’ me.”

“Well, how would you feel if I requested a placement up here?” Claire asked. “We get asked where we would be willing to go for placement because there’s only two universities in Scotland who offer my course. Originally, I put Glasgow and Lanarkshire as those are the health boards in my immediate area, but we are offered placements up here, too. So, I could speak to my tutor about changing my options.”

“So, ye could spend yer whole summer up here wi’ Fergus an’ me?” Jamie asked hopefully.

“Maybe not this summer,” Claire replied. “You see, I have to undertake a general placement within a hospital, meaning one which does not specifically involve people with learning disabilities. So, I will most likely be in either the Royal Infirmary or the Queen Elizabeth. But that placement is only eight weeks long, and the summer is sixteen weeks long.”

“So, ye can come up here an’ spend yer summer holidays wi’ the family?” Jamie questioned.

“I’ll need to find a new place to stay in Glasgow, too,” Claire added. “I don’t want to be in halls again next year.”

“I’m sure Janet will take ye on as a housemate,” Jamie suggested. “I’ll talk tae her later fer ye.”

“You don’t have to do that,” Claire replied. “She’s already offered, but I’ve said I want to try and find my own place first. Maybe with Mary, she’s a sweet girl.”

“But no’ wi’ yer fiery friend?”

“Geillis? No. I don’t want to run the risk of seeing your Uncle walking about in his underwear,” Claire laughed.

“I still cannae wrap my head aroun’ tha’,” Jamie laughed as he buried his face in Claire’s curls. “I mean, my Aunt Maura has been dead but five years, an’ Geillis is young enough tae be his daughter.”

“She’s already a widower, herself,” Claire supplied. “She married a man old enough to be her dad when she was eighteen and he had a heart attack at her twenty-first birthday party.”

“Hope she doesnae expect loyalty from him,” Jamie continued. “He’s got a reputation of being a ladies’ man. Rumour is he’ actually my cousin Hamish’s da’ rather than my Uncle Colum.”

“Oh, Geil’s no angel on that front, either,” Claire added. “She’s no stranger to flaunting her conquests around the flat.”

“The perfect match then,” Jamie commented.

“Yep, I’d say so,” Claire confirmed with a smile

Jamie smiled back and made a move to kiss Claire, but just before their lips met, the door burst open and the whirling dervish that was Fergus jumped onto the bed with one of his DVDs.

“Seanag says dinner will be a while, Uncle Willie is fussin’,” Fergus explained. “Can we watch this, da’?”

“Sure, lad,” Jamie said as he took the film from Fergus. “You get yersel’ comfy wi’ Claire an’ I’ll put it on the telly.”

“M’lady?” Fergus asked as he sat beside Claire and snuggled into her side. “When da moves in here wi’ me, will you be moving in too?”

“Claire needs tae stay in Glasgow,” Jamie informed Fergus, sensing Claire’s surprise as he joined them on the bed. “She’s studyin’ tae be a nurse and still goes tae school there. Jus’ like Miss, eh, yer Aunt Jenny.”

“But you will still come and visit?” Fergus pressed on with hope shining bright in his eyes.

“Of course I will, Fergus,” Claire promised. “The Frasers are just as much my family as they are yours now. And I’m sure you and your dad will be down to visit me as well.”

“Will we, da’?” Fergus asked, his eyes shining with hope. “I’ve never been to Glasgow before.”

“Only when it willnae interfere wi’ Claire’s studies,” Jamie assured the excited little boy. “We can maybe visit some of the museums with her.”

“That would be wonderful, Fergus,” Claire confirmed. “But your dad is right, I should put my studies first. So, we will wait to decide on when you can come visit. But for the time being, let’s just enjoy spending the time we have with each other before we get called on for dinner.”

Fergus nodded his head and curled into Claire’s side as Jamie pressed play on the DVD remote.

The reason no one in my family that I live with knows much or anything about my personal pop culture is because when I was younger they went out of their way to hurt those safe spaces. Star Trek could take it because it’s Star Trek. I’m not letting you hurt _____ Because _____ welcomes me unconditionally.

So, as you find yourself forced together with other “family” this holiday season keep in mind that at some moments pop culture garbage angels are all some people have to keep them together. “Tell me about it” can be very powerful. Even if you have to say “tell me a little bit about it” to have some time limits.

I was going to say “Sometimes Pink Diamond becomes Rose Quartz and sometimes she just needs a Pearl to listen to until she gets it our of her system.” but that doesn’t seem quite right. At least the idea is there.

Sometimes we just need to find a meme, run it in to the ground, and let it run its course and we’ll be able to make it awhile longer.

Hello? It’s Neil. When do Chris and I get our gratuitous shots in knickers and suspender belts?

Yeah, got a copy of PSB’s It Could Never Happen Here, and aside from the shot of the nuns which could fit in with the other weird Catholic imagery and the skinny dipping there was no real reason for the rest of it.

And running over the hitchhiker standing in the street would have been hilarious.

I haven’t seen Fantastic Planet yet, or to know I have, and it’s been awhile since I’ve watched other weird movies so the PSB movie is currently queen of the weird around here.

No, Neil doesn’t get bashed. It’s a self inflicted end of a chain that ends with What Have I Done to Deserve This?

Dear mum, whomever did the Psycho Grams wot was on MTV’s Liquid Television might have seen this film.

Yesterday was another one of those days where I know I did stuff and things. Closed the lids on the doll making tubs and tidied that up. The four finished heads are with doll stuff. They still need sealant and a quick fidge to Neil’s nose but that’s nothing. Martin and the others will have to wait.

Did some more tracings for the Bachfhhfhfa sketch book. Wrote a few odds and ends. Think I figured out a bit more of a plot for the PSB story. Ended up ordering a set of the Spectrum Noir Colourtint tinted graphite pencils. Reviews are kind of meh on Amazon but I trust the Art Gear Guide guy who does more than coloring books and has used Derwent Graphitint.

TL;DR Spectrum Noir Colourtint is the same idea as Derwent Graphitint but more vivid and you might want both.

I was there to get the latest Sailor Moon DVD set but I’m not waiting for Amazon to get it when I might be able to find it in a brick and mortar store. As I have to start over from the start with the binging, perhaps, and will probably get in to Crystal first I’m in no hurry.

I glued together a couple of pages in the grey sketchbook to prepare for putting stuff in after them. It’s not one of my experimental boo if some pages aren’t missing or glued together.

So today I want to do some finished art and not have stuff around the house get in the way.

We had to cook one of the turkeys yesterday and I actually got to be in the kitchen to make my lunch. Alone. The kitchen is one of the places where we take a lot of Repressitall.

because I’ve not actually listened to it in full, thoughts on the entire Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again soundtrack, because @freetobegrace did it and now I need to get it out of my system

and i’m sorry to everyone on mobile who needs to scroll past this

When I Kissed The Teacher:

I’m so glad they changed the pronouns in this song to make it gayer. Kind of wished they’d followed through on that. Just... make Donna canonically bi, you cowards.

when watching it in the movie the vocals seemed so lacking - it sounds so studio-sung compared to their very energetic dancing. so it works better as a soundtrack.

I Wonder (Departure):

I can see why they cut it, it’s a lovely song but it goes nowhere - it’s nearly five minutes of yeah we get it she’s leaving.

A ninety second excerpt would have been nice as it is quite appropriate, though

Hopefully we get it as a deleted scene like we did The Name of the Game

I like the “my friends are my family” line change. But like...zzzzz.......

(I’m also annoyed that they give Rosie and Tanya so few songs and then cut one of them. like I’m here to stan them give me something to react to.)

One Of Us:

how dare you take this song from Donna. I’d have loved to watch Meryl act the fuck out of it.

the way they shot it was cool though

but also holy shit I can’t take their voices they’re so weak

Waterloo:

why did they cast actual stage actors in roles that barely sing and then do this

backing vocals are good though

and it was ridiculous which was fun

Why Did It Have To Be Me:

probably my favourite of the younger dads’ songs, somehow. it’s better suited to questionable vocal abilities, possibly because they haven’t had to alter the vocal range for it, as it was originally written for a man singing it.

not doing a medley with Happy Hawaii was a wasted opportunity, though: it’s a song about a holiday, work with it!

After all I've had to go through / I'm making no plans (making no plans oh-ooh) / But I, but I believe love gives me a second chance, mmm see! throw it in, nobody will even notice except for die-hard ABBA fans losing our goddamned minds!

I've got a feeling the dream will come true / Somebody's waiting and I'll forget you / Hey Honolulu, we're going to happy Hawaii look change the last line back to “why did it have to me" and you’ve got a perfect song end

for context Happy Hawaii has the exact same tune

I Have A Dream:

pretty forgettable... but pretty. worked in context.

seriously it sounds so similar to the version in the original movie I’ve very little to say

Kisses of Fire:

this is better than the mess we got in the movie

I still haven’t forgiven them for their crimes against this song - if they wanted a joke song, ABBA has about a dozen weirdly niche songs they could have used, not one of my childhood faves

Andante, Andante:

I think they just wanted to include this song tbh - had Lily James jumped in on Kisses of Fire it would have worked better

The Name of the Game:

I find it far too interesting that they kept the change from “bashful child” to “curious child” that they made for the song in its original context in the musical

Knowing Me, Knowing You:

taking Sam’s song from the stage show and giving his younger self the same song? works so well!

having young Sam and young Donna sing together, and Sam and Sophie together? also works well!

why did they shorten the ah-has, everybody knows them so it sounds weird

Angel Eyes:

finally some good fucking food

seriously this is the first song thus far that I’ve actually put on my phone

it’s just FUN and I’ve missed Tanya and Rosie throughout, oh my god

this really highlights how much better the ensemble was done in the first movie - like it’s a bit weird how enamoured these generic young adults are with Sophie, whereas the ensemble in the first movie had a bit more age and appearance range and were a bit more of a Greek chorus as opposed to a generic workforce who really like their boss with the American accent despite her spending pretty much her entire life in Greece... but I digress

the best part of this song is definitely when Rosie and Tanya are singing

Mamma Mia:

yes! fun! happiness!

Lily’s vocals are growing on me now that I’m not looking at her being far more energetic than she sounds

seriously though let Rosie and Tanya sing too damnit

also I know it ends on the shock return of Bill but like... it doesn’t even have that energy in the recording

Dancing Queen:

let’s be real this is the most joyous scene in the movie

you’ve got the boats, you’ve got the run for the harbour, it’s pure happiness

not sure if the lack of a standout lead vocalist is a good thing or not... but it’s so damn happy (I mean it’s probably supposed to be Amanda but you can barely bloody hear her)

though you’re a teaser you turn them on / leave them burning and then you’re gone soooo sounds like they didn’t want to be saying it

I’ve Been Waiting For You:

this started and I felt like I’d been stabbed because I bawled my guts out both times I saw it (and my mum cried too which made me cry more)

and listened to the original and cried ninety seconds in

the lyrics are so so different to the original which is just disorienting

end of the first chorus and I’m crying

it’s okay but it works well in the context of the flashback (less so in the present)

it is very oddly specific in its lyrics

though the common ideas of what exactly comes the next day tend to be like... a lover, a stalker, a murderer, death itself... so with that in mind... big yikes

In general:

I think part of the fun of the questionable singing in the first movie is that it’s a bunch of Hollywood heavyweights giving it their all and clearly having a blast while they do it. If we don’t know who they are, and their singing is a bit meh, it’s just... not quite so fun.

not enough energy - were they singing on set like they were in the first one? because a lot of the recordings are kinda lacking in guts

genuinely the fact that we get an extended version of Kisses of Fire that never appeared in the movie when we don’t get Hasta Mañana is going to annoy me until we get a proper recording of Helen Sjöholm singing it (prayer circle for the DVD honestly) because that was the best sung song in that entire movie

Game of Thrones - S03 E09

Weddings! Killings! The two genders!

I made a list of people half way through this episode that I considered to be marked for death, which was as follows:

Littlest Stark Rob Stark Mrs Stark (elder and the younger) Iain Glenn

Those who survived this episode I still suspect will not make it past the end of the series.

A couple of things to mention at the start of this review, firstly: I found it hilarious that Bran’s voice broke between this episode and the last one, oh, the trials of casting child actors for long running series...

Secondly, I did call the ending of this one fairly early on, because the phrase “this was too easy” was ringing in my ears from about five minutes in. In spite of this, there were some really nice details which added to the shock value of the actual killings, of which there were so very many. The man who ultimately kills Mrs Stark the younger (and the boringer) is shown chatting happily to her earlier on in the feast. Catelyn Stark’s performance during this scene was also great, with her rising discomfort eliciting a nervous response from the viewer. This was good show-don’t-tell stuff, Catelyn didn’t at any point say “Oh no, I think they��re going to massacre us.”

I feel like these deaths were foreshadowed by how boring the characters and their overall arc had become. There was very little left for the characters to achieve. Richard Madden was reconciled with his mum, boring wife had been married and impregnated (although I kind of hoped she was going to betray Richard Madden in a big way, but it turns out she really was there just to raise the tension...ah... female characters). By the time we arrived at Filch’s nasty castle, they’ve been moodily wondering the countryside for what feels like a decade.

I will have one brief interlude to say that putting together a selection of ugly women for a TV show is never going to be a good idea. Firstly because most of the women cast as “Filch’s Ugly Offspring” were not that ugly, and secondly, it’s essentially a way of saying “Oh BTW, if you wanted to know what Western standards of beauty look like, here’s a showcase of all the women we could find who missed the mark”. Ultimately, this highlights just how ridiculous, samey and unrealistic Western standards of beauty are, and makes the show look shallow.

Unfortunately, the fact that the ending was really good means that the rest of this episode pales into insignificance, especially any of the bits with Egrit and John Sneuh. I just don’t care about them. John Sneuh is so deeply crap at negotiating. Every argument he had in this episode felt like he could have used four to six extra words and convinced his opponent he was correct. I’m not sure John Sneuh knows four to six extra words, though. Just like Castle on a Cloud in the DVD of the Les Miserables 25th anniversary concert, Egrit and John Sneuh scenes are for toilet breaks and snacking.

The stark lads (on tour) have now divided, littlest stark is going off with Tonks and Bran Flakes is going to try and get over the wall with Hodor, Love Actually and posh sister. I’m not very invested in this lot, I like Hodor as a character but because I was alive and had an internet connection in 2016/17, I know not to bother getting attached.

Lost track of what happened with Iain Glenn in the city because I sort of assumed he was going to die, and somehow this scene left me walking around singing “Hark the herald angels sing” for a good hour or so afterwards. I think it’s probably inception from Iain Glenn being in Doctor Who in one of the episodes with all the angels. Either way, like I said, Iain Glenn is marked for death and I may or may not have added an unnecessary extra N to his name... These are uncertain times and I’ve no extra energy to spend fretting over the correct spellings of names of British character actors.

Overall, very good dramatic killings, but the narrative for the characters who died was a bit stretched by the time they finally got there. When Richard Madden copped it, I was more than a little bit relieved.

Buffyversary

Well. Holy crap. 20 years of Buffy. 20. YEARS.

Let me talk to you about what Buffy means to me.

I'm a "first wave" millennial. I was born in 1985. My formative years were spent on the internet before that was a normal thing to do. It was the great unknown.

I didn't get into Buffy at the start. When it started airing on BBC2, I didn't pay much attention. I watched one episode (I think The Witch) after some urging by a friend. I'd always been into the supernatural. I played VTM (predominantly online, in Yahoo chat - "The Vampyres Tavern", under the "Romance" chat rooms). I read predominantly fantasy. I think it was mostly my friends that ended up influencing me to start watching just as season 2 kicked off.

By the end of that season, I was hooked.

I'm not sure what it was the spoke to me. The fighting? Yes, i love people kicking ass. The language? Buffyisms stay with me until this day. The characters? None of them were what you'd expect. They played against stereotype. It was awesome.

I remember being aggressively pissed off that my boyfriend at the time booked this wonderful valentines date... because it was the day Once More With Feeling first aired. Luckily for him, he also recorded it for me.

I was a totally Bangel shipper, but i never heard the term "bangel" until about 5 years after the show ended. It was just "Buffy/Angel". It was a miraculous love.

I had a bit of a ritual. Friday nights. All lights in the living room off. Me, a bottle of pepsi, and a box of jaffa cakes. I demanded silence. I got SO MAD when my parents or brothers interrupted. That was MY TIME. Dork.

I will never forget when I realised spoilers were bad for me. I devoured Buffy spoilers, but for some reason didn't do the same for Angel. Then "The Trial" aired. At the end of that episode, Drusilla makes a shock return, siring Darla. I was jumping up and down. I was PSYCHED. And then I realised that if i'd know that was coming, i'd have not experienced the same feeling. I swore off spoilers from that day, and never returned.

Buffy was also my first Internet Fandom. I'd been around nerdy spaces on the net for years by this point - at 14 i was a chat room/forum vet, already moderating a bunch - but all about role playing. I tried to get into The Bronze forum a few times. I never really felt welcome. It seemed mostly americans, so spoileriffic. Somehow i found this Buffy fansite, "Anywhere But Here", and on that board i found my people. It was a good mix of people from the UK and America. It was pretty queer centric, being run by a straight woman and a gay man, and i found my confidence to talk openly with those people about being bisexual before i was ready to talk to my real life peers. I had 3 amazing friends, all females from the UK, and we formed "The Wiccan Watchers". Yeah, we were a bit of a clique, but i dont think in a nasty way. We just liked having our own special thing. We wrote fanfic together. I met my first "internet strangers" in a trip to Devon, where all of us teenage girls finally got to meet.

My mum had to phone the other girls mum before she let me go. So embarrassing.

I'll always remember drinking tequila with nectarines instead of lemon, because thats what we had, and it was yummy.

I'll also always remember beeing deeply suspicious that the BTVS writers were lurking on ABH. Particularly after things we wrote started appearing in the show. I screamed at my TV when Giles and Willow discussed the wiccan coven in Devon.

We had awards ceremonies for board members. I hosted. I wrote a song for one. It was based on the Sarah Michelle Gellar/ Jack Black 2002 MTV movie awards intro.

We were the coolest.

We all went off to university, me last of all, in 2003 (i was the baby). We grew away from ABH. A few people moved on to become Browncoats, myself included. I got care packages from my Buffy friends. I sent care packages to my Buffy friends. They were more than "internet friends".

Buffy was still airing. Angel was still airing. But not for long.

Being a cusp millennial - let me tell you about my internet. At home, i had broadband. In my halls of residence, i had dial up. That you had to pay for, on TOP of the charge you had to pay to use your phone line to begin with - oh yes, i paid for my landline phone like with a pre-paid card. Now, i cant even imagine it. Luckily, being a nerd and having nerdy roommates, i found a dealer. A guy from the computer studies class who would download eps of Buffy and Angel on the lab broadband and burn them off for me. Excellent. I still had my backup though... Box sets. 6 seasons of BTVS on VHS. 4 season of Angel. That was about... 57 VHS tapes. They were my security blanket. They went with me wherever i went. Absolute NIGHTMARE for my parents who had to ferry me up and down the country during breaks.

Thank god for DVD’s. Then Digital Downloads. SO MUCH EASIER.

My Buffy friends also set my dating criteria. I'd had a couple of bad ones. They told me i wasn't allowed to date anyone until they met specific criteria, including loving StrongBad from Homestar Runner, and of course, Buffy.

That night i had a "one night stand" with the hot goth nerd i'd been sporadically flirting with. We joked around about strongbad. The next day we spent the whole day in bed watching Buffy, until i kicked him out without even a phone number to go on.

13 years later, we have a mortgage. He's still a hot nerd. We still make each other cry laughing, and still lie around watching cult TV. Funny how life works out.

My Buffy Friends have done well by me.

While my life drew me away from internet fandom, Buffy was ever a presence in my life. Once i was on MTV as a selected group of Whedon nerds. The producer tried to give us "kooky" facts like "I've watched Buffy 5 times!". 5 times? Laughable. 50 maybe. We all sort of cut in and gave true facts - mine being that i was writing my dissertation on intertextuality in the works of Joss Whedon. She gave us the startled blink that only non nerdy people can when faced with SHEER GEEK and was like "... oh, Okay. Wow they are better than what we came up with."

That is the one time i met Joss. I got a hug. I'm terrible at meeting people i admire. Its just an impossibly huge task to be faced with someone who changed your life but doesn't even know you. I always say something fucking stupid. This time, i just got a hug. It was good.

I try not to regret anything, but there is one thing in my life i do regret. At the Serenity premiere in London, i had a ticket for the after party. My partner was with me. We had to catch a train. I couldn't justify abandoning him and going. Luckily... one of my Buffy Friends was there. One of my original ABHers. I gave him my ticket.

He danced with Joss. I am full of raging jealousy. I'm also full of joy that if i couldn't go, another life long Buffy friend could.

I haven't even mentioned Anya yet. Oh, how i love Anya. Anya was the first TV character i ever encountered that i felt was speaking my language. I mean, she's an ex vengeance demon, so i'm not sure what it says about me...

It gives me ridiculous nerdy joy that my nieces both have an accidental Anya link... 1) Born on the 4th July, 2) Called... Anya.

I like to think that Buffy made me who i am today. And who i am is a kick ass woman.

Today I was involved in a horrible collision. Last year I had Unitrin Direct....they were charging me $85 a month...this is with NO tickets or accidents for the last 5 years of my driving record....this is also with the BASIC insurance that you need in Florida...10/10/20...NO collision...and a $1000 deductible..... So at the end of my 6 months...it was time for a renewal...they tried to bump me up to $140 a month for no reason...still no accidents/tickets...nothing had changed...i had expected my rate to DECREASE....they tell me it's a STATEWIDE INCREASE ......so i called around... Ended up switching to Allstate who has been charging me $90 a month (better than $140 right?).....6 months go by, everything's cool.....now my policy renewal is coming up and they're trying to tell me i need to pay $160 a month for their basic insurance. Are you kidding me? And according to them it's another STATEWIDE INSURANCE INCREASE ...... They also told me that it could be due to not having CONSECUTIVE insurance for the last few years, as in...I switched from State Farm to Unitrin to Allstate......they told me call the state insurance commissioner...which I did.... Got connected to some guy in Gainesville who tells me that the INSURANCE companies are the ones who decide the rates and increases...not them. Pretty much BS....Allstate's blaming the state, state's blaming them...feels like a huge runaround to me. Guess my questions are.... Should I stick with Allstate and pay $160 a month for this absolute BASIC insurance (keep in mind..no collision, $1000 deductible)...my car's not even worth a YEAR of their insurance. .... I'm a 39 year old driver who's had a full licence since the age of 17, I have full no claims and although I've been involved in 2 accidents neither of them were my fault (fingers crossed I'm not to speak too soon). I'm only buying a car worth 1000 and the difference in cost between fully comp and 3rd party, fire & theft makes it worth thinking about going for the latter as the fully comp is 609 with 250 excess and TPFT 480 with 250 excess. Does anyone know, if I was involved in an accident cause by a 3rd party driver can I claim from their insurance? I remember on my 2nd accident (about 14 years ago before the recent technology) although I got all the details of the registration and the driver he gave me incorrect details and the DVLA never actually found him as the car had been in between owners. However I was put in contact with a type of agency who assist in these cases and I got reimbursed for my car and neither did it affect my insurance. How am I covered 3rd party if I have an accident that's the fault of the 3rd party? Logically I'm thinking that I can claim for my car from their insurance? My car is a 1994 Lexus ES300 with 125,000+ miles on it. I would say it is in good or fair condition, the leather seats are cracking badly and it has a few scrathes, etc. I'm just wandering if it is in my best interest to repair this car or for it to be totaled out. The estimate for repairs in $3500.00, which could always go up once repairs start for unseen damage. I'm just not sure the car is worth repairing for that amount considering its condition.
