What’s this, a second chapter in one day? Alas, this is the final chapter of this installment. I will be returning to this ‘verse at some point, but I am currently writing for another fandom at the minute.
CHAPTER 16
Previous
Claire woke first on the morning of the Hogmanay celebrations, she loved the feeling of waking up in Jamie’s arms and didn’t know how she would cope when she had to go back to Glasgow in a couple of days. The feeling of Jamie stirring behind her, made Claire smile, so she turned around in his arms to burrow her head further into his chest. There were lots still to be done this morning, but she wanted to hide away from the outside world for just that little bit longer.
“Mornin’ Sassenach,” Jamie murmured as he pressed his lips to Claire’s. “I’m surprised there is still only the two of us in bed.”
“Hush,” Claire jokingly scolded. “I can hear footsteps outside the door, so I think Fergus is just a late riser this morning. He has been working quite hard the past few days, and the high he got off of donating his toys was almost unbearable last night.”
“Did ye get somethin’ nice tae wear tonight?” Jamie asked, suddenly remembering the ladies’ shopping trip yesterday. “Do I get a sneak preview?”
“No, you do not, James Fraser,” Claire scolded, just as the bedroom door opened and Fergus found his way onto the bed to snuggle between Claire and Jamie. “I had Jenny as my stylist, so you can trust I have a suitable outfit to match you, and Fergus, in your kilts.”
“Fergus has a kilt?” Jamie asked as he began to stroke Fergus’ curls. “Another gift from Janet?”
“No, M’lady,” Fergus corrected around his thumb, which was currently located in his mouth, and Jamie’s eyes snapped to Claire’s.
“Sorcha?” Jamie questioned. “You bought him a kilt?”
“I noticed while we were sorting through his clothes, he needed a kilt,” Claire explained as if it was common knowledge. “So, while we were out, I had Jenny help me get him one. He looks so handsome in it and will match his daddy perfectly.”
“Well, I can’t wait for tonight,” Jamie smiled. “But as much as I would like to stay here until tonight, I’m needed to help out with the horses. Ian has asked da’ if he can take Janet tae Loch nam Bonnach this morning.”
“Ooh,” Claire taunted as she pushed at Jamie’s shoulder. “Getting yourself another brother soon, are you? Off you go, I’m going to hang off and let this rascal sleep a bit more as he appears to have dozed off again.”
“Alrigh’, Sassenach,” Jamie smiled, and he pressed soft kisses to Fergus’ forehead and Claire’s lips. “I’ll set an alarm for 9 for the two of ye, get some more sleep. I’ll let mam know.”
Claire just gave Jamie a soft smile at his gesture and snuggled back in with the little boy who she was sure occupied about half of her heart by now. And she was pretty sure his dad occupied the rest of her heart.
**
When the alarm went off at 9, Claire woke, but Fergus did not. So, she decided to go and run him a bath while he was still sleeping and nip downstairs to get herself some coffee.
“Ah, mornin’, Claire,” Ellen said as she mixed some wonderfully smelling ingredients together. “Did ye’ sleep weel?”
“Morning Ellen,” Claire returned as she located the coffee pot that Ellen had placed on the stove top to keep warm. “Yes, thank you. To be honest, I think I’m going to struggle when I go back to Glasgow. Not sleeping in Jamie’s arms.”
“Weel, ye’ have weekends an’ when yer classes resume yer always welcome tae visit on long weekends,” Ellen reassured Claire. “But I dinnae think yer goin’ tae be the only one struggling. I can see Jamie an’ Fergus spending a lot of nights in the same bed when ye go back tae school.”
“Thank you, Ellen,” Claire said as she hugged her new mother figure, careful not to get the baking mix on her clothes. “Now, I’ve run Fergus’ bath, I just need to go and get him up and ready for the day.”
“Mind just put him in jeans an’ a jumper,” Ellen said as Claire passed through the kitchen door. “Ye can change him intae his kilt around 4. If Fergus is anything like Jamie at that age, ye’ willnae want him in his kilt too early.”
“I was just going to put him in another pair of pyjamas,” Claire smiled. “We’re just going to have a lazy day, maybe watching DVDs or painting, so he wasn’t getting under anyone’s feet.”
“Beauty and brains,” Ellen smiled. “Jamie has really picked a goodun wi’ ye. Now go an’ get the lad up before the bath water goes cold.”
It was easier to get Fergus up and, in the bath, than Claire thought it would be. She sat and sang to him while he played with his toys for a little while. She then decided to wash him before the water cooled too much.
“Right, young man,” Claire said when she was sure all the soap was out his hair. “Let’s get you dried and into some fresh pyjamas. It’s too early to get into your kilt. We can play with your toys or we can watch some films.”
“Can you read me a story, please?” Fergus asked as Claire wrapped him up in his towel. “I like when you read to me.”
“Of course,” Claire smiled, which gave her an idea. She would use her phone to record her reading the stories and then pass them onto Jamie for when she was back in Glasgow. “But we’ll go downstairs first and see what we can get for breakfast.”
***
After breakfast, Claire and Fergus retreated to Jamie’s room and Fergus gathered some of his favourite stories before curling up in Claire’s lap. Claire just smiled at Fergus as she went about readying her phone to record some of the Mr Men books for the little boy.
Ellen popped up with some lunch for them, which Claire was grateful for, as her throat was becoming dry with all her reading. Ellen noticed the pile of books when she sat the tray of sandwiches and shortbread down.
“Ye’ been reading some books this mornin’ then?” Ellen asked.
“Yeah,” Claire smiled. “I asked Fergus to pick a selection of books, then I decided that I’d record myself reading them. I’ll pass them on to Jamie for the nights when all Fergus wants is my voice.”
“Ye’ve really fallen for my boys, haven’t ye’?” Ellen asked as she took Claire’s hand in hers.
“I used to feel so lonely,” Claire whispered, not wanting Fergus to hear this part of the conversation and become upset. “Then I met Jenny, and I didn’t feel as alone, but there was still some loneliness. When she invited me for Christmas, I didn’t know what to expect, but I went out and bought some little gifts that somehow I knew would be just right. But nothing really made sense. Then I met everyone…”
“Ye’ were made tae be a part o’ this family,” Ellen smiled. “Ye were made tae meet Jamie an’ bring father and son and grandson together. So, as part of this family, ye’ll never feel alone…”
Before Ellen could continue, the door downstairs slammed open and Jenny’s excited yells for anyone could be heard, which automatically brought a smile to both Ellen and Claire’s faces. They knew what Ian’s intentions were when he took Jenny out today, so, they were excited to see the ring.
“We’re up in Jamie’s room,” Ellen called in response to her daughter.
“Mam, mam, I’m getting’ marrit,” Jenny almost yelled as she came into the room. “Ian’s asked me to marry him, an’ I said aye.”
“Ye’d be daft no’ tae,” Ellen jokingly replied as she took her daughter’s hand to admire the engagement ring. “That man is gaga for ye’, an’ has been fer years. Congratulations, my girl.”
“Thanks, mam,” Jenny said as she threw her arms around her mum in joy. “Look Claire.”
“Oh, it’s gorgeous, Jenny,” Claire said as she held Jenny’s hand to steady it, ensuring she got a good view of the ring. “You are one lucky girl.”
“I’m going to go down and check on my clootie dumplin’,” Ellen said. “Just give me a shout if ye want me tae look efter Fergus fer ye’, Claire.”
“Thank you for lunch, Ellen,” Claire said, tearing her eyes away from the ring for a second. “We should be good with Fergus. We’re just about to put a film on, so everything should be fine.”
“An’ give us a shout if ye need a hand wi’ anythin’ mam,” Jenny returned. “Just because Claire an’ I are goin’ tae talk about my ring, doesnae mean ye cannae shout on us.”
Ellen nodded her head and took the tray downstairs, leaving the plates for Claire and Fergus, Ellen went back down to continue with her baking, leaving Claire and Jenny to gush about the morning’s events.
“First thing’s first,” Jenny said once Claire had put Toy Story on for Fergus to watch. “As my only sister, will ye’ be my maid of honour?”
“Of course,” Claire gushed immediately. “I’d love to be your maid of honour…”
***
The afternoon wore on, and soon it was time to start getting ready. Ellen had volunteered to get Fergus dressed since Claire and Jenny had lost track of time talking and were running short on time to get themselves ready. Claire’s outfit was reasonably simple, but she needed the time to try and focus on her hair. Jenny and Louise managed to fashion Claire’s hair into an acceptable messy bun, while Claire applied some light, natural makeup.
“Jamie is going to love you in this,” Jenny smiled as she arranged Claire’s tartan sash correctly, then her own. “A little black dress is always a good idea for a Ceilidh, but the way yers clings in all the right places and paired with our Tartan, I don’ know if Jamie will be able tae keep his hands tae himself.”
“Oiu,” Louise agreed. “I have seen how he is with you at the best of times. But we will have to make sure we get a photo of the three of you tonight.”
“Aye,” Jenny agreed. “Yer first Hogmanay as a wee family. An’ Fergus is going to be so adorable in his wee kilt.”
Before Claire could answer them, there was a knock on Jenny’s door. “Will ye three witches hurry up, we’ll be late, an’ we cannae hae that, da’s lighting the bonfire.”
“William Simon Murtagh MacKenzie Fraser, ye little…” Jenny yelled as she chased her brother away from her door, followed by Claire and Louise’s laughter.
Claire and Louise grabbed their bags, and Claire also grabbed Jenny’s before heading downstairs. Claire was knocked breathless when she saw Jamie and Fergus standing at the bottom of the stairs waiting on her. They were in matching black Jacobite shirts (as Jenny had explained when Claire bought it) and their own Fraser tartan kilts. The three of them truly were matching, like a little family tonight.
Suddenly, Jamie’s eyes were drawn to Claire on the stairs, almost as if he had a sixth sense that was attuned to only her, and his jaw dropped open. “Claire,” he whispered almost reverently, and moved to the bottom of the stairs and held his hand out to her. “Ye’ are truly a beauty to behold, Sassenach.”
“Thank you, Jamie,” Claire replied as she ducked her head to try and hide the blush adorning her cheeks. “And you and Fergus are truly perfect gentlemen, waiting on your lady at the bottom of the stairs to escort her to the party.”
“You look pretty, M’lady,” Fergus said with an awestruck look on his face.
“Thank you, Fergus,” Claire said as she scooped him into her arms. “And you look so grown up in your kilt.”
“Right everyone,” Brian’s voice called out. “Let’s get going.”
“Let me get a picture of Jamie, Claire an’ wee Fergus first,” Ellen said as she came bustling into the hallway with her camera. Brian just shook his head and watched as his wife fussed about their son and his apparent new family, getting them into position and making sure she was taking the perfect photo.
Once the photo was taken, everyone piled out to the cars and headed off to the town hall to begin the festivities to bring in the new year.
***
The party was going well, the weather had stayed dry, so the bonfire was a success, and soon the band made the announcement that it was ten minutes to midnight. Claire and Jamie had been dancing away on the dancefloor while Fergus had been napping under the watchful eyes of Ellen and Brian.
“’M goin’ to get Fergus,” Jamie said as the 10-minute warning was given. “I want tae ring in the Bells wi’ ye’ an’ Fergus in my arms.”
“Okay,” Claire said with an encouraging smile, letting Jamie know that was exactly what she wanted too.
Jamie soon returned with a groggy little boy in his arms, but as soon as they reached Claire, Fergus appeared to be more awake. Almost as if Claire’s presence was a tonic to his sleepiness.
“It’s almost time to shout happy new year,” Claire said to Fergus, and Fergus reached out to Claire. Jamie handed him over to her and wrapped both of them in his large arms and began to sway back and forth with them while they waited on the countdown to begin.
“10…” the band leader began, and everyone joined in. “9...8...7...6…5...4...3...2...1... HAPPY NEW YEAR!”
“Happy new year,” Jamie said as he pressed his lips to Claire’s and pulled her and Fergus in closer to him. “Happy new year, Fergus.
“Happy new year, Jamie,” Claire said as she pulled away from Jamie’s kiss. “Happy new year, Fergus.”
“Happy new year, da’,” Fergus said as a wide smile split his face in two, turning from Jamie to Claire. “Happy new year, mam!”

Ch. 1
Claire Fraser had always known she was a witch. Her affinity for healing hinted at it and her ability to time travel confirmed it. What she didn’t know was that she would come into her full power the day she became a mother. Concerned with how her pregnancy is progressing, she seeks the help of Apothecary Master Raymond in the hope that he will be able to teach her how to utilise her newfound power and protect her family from disaster. A canon-divergent AU told through the pages of the Fraser Grimoire ‘The Book of Faith’.
A/N: @just-a-kid-at-heart - once again this one is for you! Thank you so much to @moghraidhjamie for organising this year’s Secret Santa Fic Exchange and ultimately encouraging me to write more.
Chapter 2: To Guard Against Miscarriage
Red Raspberry Leaves Vitex Agnus-Castus Berry Powder False Unicorn Root (alt: Wild Yam Root) Amethyst (alt: Moonstone, Malachite, Rose Quartz, Agate, or Ruby) Length of Rope (pref: Green) Baby Blanket Physical Item of Love
“No, no, no, no, no,” Claire whispered to herself. “It’s too early.”
The red stain on her undergarment had her heart racing. She was a trained medical professional and she knew that she needed to stay calm. But, by God, she couldn’t control it. And she was starting to panic.
“It’s too early.” This time she said it louder, stronger. She placed her palms on her swollen belly and took slow, deep deliberate breaths in an attempt to lower her heart rate. “It’s too early.”
Spotting during pregnancy wasn’t unusual and a sensitive cervix could easily be to blame. Perhaps.
Despite resuming their sex life after Jamie’s ordeal at Wentworth and their subsequent time spent at Abbey of Ste. Anne de Beaupré, intercourse remained infrequent and was unlikely the cause. What then? She started running through other alternatives, everything she had ever read, everything she had ever learned or overheard someone else explain to a patient but soon stopped herself. The darker her thoughts the faster she noticed her heart beating in her chest.
She pulled off her undergarment and went to the chest of drawers in search of a replacement. Usually she had help dressing and undressing - something she came to appreciate more and more as her stomach continued to swell - but this she was determined to deal with on her own. There was no need worry anyone, not yet.
Finally redressed, this time with a clean rag nestled between her legs, she slipped on her shoes and made her way down to the dining room. As usual, there was a pot of tea and buttered toast waiting for her on the table.
She contemplated her options as she ate and only grew increasingly frustrated. For longer than she even had even known for certain that she was pregnant she had been having a number of increasingly clear dreams, all featuring the colour blue. Just two nights previously she had dreamed of the soft soul of an unborn infant, her own she had assumed, that was starting to crack. She had traced the line with long feather and sealed it in blue. But what was the point in dreaming of powers that she herself had never possessed? She had too many questions and little way of finding answers. What she really needed was some help.
“Suzette,” Claire called as she placed her empty cup down on its matching saucer.
“Oui, madame?”
“Please organise for the carriage to be ready. I must go to the Rue de Varennes as soon as possible. And if you can find Fergus, send him up to see me, please.”
“Oui, madame,” Suzette curtseyed and left the room quickly.
Despite the length of time she and Jamie had spent at Jared Fraser’s home on Rue Tremoulins here in Paris, Claire didn’t think she would ever get used to people being at her beck and call. Yet, today she was especially thankful for it. Rushing around and organising things was the last thing she ought to be doing yet they needed to be done. Without people like Suzette, Magnus and Fergus in her life… she couldn’t bear to entertain the thought and was grateful that Fergus chose that moment to come through the doorway and into the dining room.
Claire stood and walked to meet him halfway.
“Fergus,” she placed a hand on the boy’s shoulder, finding strength in his stature. “Go to L'Hôpital des Anges and tell Mother Hildegarde that I will not be in attendance today.”
“Oui, Milady,” Fergus stood tall and nodded his head, looking much older than his 9 years of age. “I will go at once.”
Normally his youthful eagerness to complete any task asked of him would make her smile fondly but even he couldn’t bring any joy out of her when she had more pressing things on her mind. She followed him out the door and at such a slower pace he had completely disappeared from view by the time she was walking up to the carriage waiting for her.
The ride to Rue de Varennes was thankfully unimpeded by other traffic and before long she was making her way inside Maître Raymond’s store. Delphine looked up at her from behind the counter and abandoned her work to call to someone out the back.
“Ah, Madonna,” Master Raymond walked out to meet her and take her hand. “I was wondering when you might grace us with your presence here once again. Tell me, how may I assist you?”
“I don’t really know,” Claire admitted and looked around the store to make sure that she, Master Raymond and Delphine were the only ones there. “But I can say that it is of a… délicat matter.”
“I see,” Master Raymond nodded and let go of her hand with a pat. “Follow me.”
Entering the shop’s secret room for the second time was no less fascinating than the first. There were items on shelves and table tops that were either new or she had simply missed earlier, overwhelmed by the amount and variety of stock kept hidden from prying eyes.
Drawn to statue of the Titan goddess, Leto, Claire moved to the shelf and picked it up to admire it from all angles.
“Something is on your mind.”
Claire smiled, unsurprised by Master Raymond’s intuition, and put the statue back down in its original place. “Yes. I have an ailment and I believe my skills as a healer are not adequate for address the problem.”
“Tell me, have you noticed anything else?”
“Anything else?”
“Oiu. Perhaps you have noticed an aversion to a particular food or drink… or there has been a sudden change to your physical status?”
“Well, you might think it foolish of me… but I have been having dreams of late.”
“That does not surprise me, Madonna. Many women who are with child do. The details are of little concern but what themes have you noticed time and time again?”
“The colour blue,” Claire shared without hesitation. “Souls, I think. And me… healing them.”
Master Raymond considered her for a moment and then moved a step closer. “Here, let me see your hands.”
Claire held them out and allowed Master Raymond to study them. She watched with one eyebrow raised as he closed his eyes for moment and nodded.
“It is fausse couche that you fear?”
“Oui,” she confirmed.
“Mmm…” he let go and set about collecting a number of items off shelves and out of bowls.
Claire took a seat on a nearby stool to watch while she waited.
“Are you familiar with the casting of spells?” Master Raymond asked as he climbed a small step ladder to reach something.
“No. I’ve seen it done by others,” she admitted, thinking primarily of Geillis Duncan, “but I have never intentionally cast a spell.”
“It’s simple, really. There are five things you must do. Cast a circle, state your purpose, perform the chosen action, give thanks and, when all of that is done, reopen the circle,” Master Raymond noticed the look of trepidation on her face as he moved back down to solid ground and smiled softly at her. “All you must remember is that intent is the most significant ingredient and love the most powerful of all. One day, with enough practice, you will be able to do this on your own just by simply feeling it. There will be no need for stones, potions or anything of the like. But for now… you will need a little help, Madonna.”
Master Raymond handed her the basket and Claire glanced inside. Small jars of herbs and powders were accompanied by a collection of stones and a length of green rope.
“Rope?”
“Oui, Madonna. You must knot the rope to stall delivery. After the spell has been performed you must keep this knot wrapped up in a baby blanket and keep it in a safe place. When the time comes for your bébé to be born you must untie said knot. Do not forget,” he added pointedly with a slight smile to the corner of his mouth before leading her out to the front counter.
Generous as ever, Master Raymond only let her pay for the stones claiming that the rest were a gift for her and Jamie’s unborn child.
“Thank you,” she said even though the words didn’t really seem to be enough.
Once home, she made sure she was alone on the top floor before gathering some items from around the main room and then locking herself in the bedroom. In what seemed like no time at all she was kneeling on the floor, surrounded by a ring of candles and a feeling she couldn’t quite describe thrumming through her veins.
Studying everything in front of her she had the feeling that something was missing. She double checked the list Master Raymond had provided along with all the items from the store. Red raspberry leaves, vitex agnus-castus berry powder and false unicorn root now combined in a small metal pan. Five stones of assorted shapes and colours surrounding the pan and, of course, the length of green rope. It was all there plus the embroidered baby blanket that she herself had added to the collection when she had returned home. Despite reassuring herself she had everything she needed, the feeling that something was missing remained.
“The most powerful ingredient is love,” she murmured to herself.
Claire stood and walked over to the dresser where the box of silver apostle spoons resided on top of it. She lifted the lid gently and considered its contents. Twelve individual spoons… supposedly for the twelve children they were sure to have - or so Jamie had told her the night he had given her the gift. She smiled at the memory and picked up the silver spoon that sported Saint Andrew on the handle. The Patron Saint of Scotland. She closed the box and returned to her spot on the floor, the apostle spoon still in hand. She placed it down on top of the baby blanket and picked up the already lit candle. In a clockwise motion she turned, using it to light each of the candles that surrounded her.
With her first task now complete she replaced the lit candle at the top of the circle. She picked up the green rope and tied it tightly around the handle of the spoon before reading the incantation out loud.
“Sécurisé dans mon ventre, une graine d'amour. Là pour grandir et s'épanouir jusqu'à sa libération par la nature dans quatre mois. Entouré de sécurité, de santé et de complétude vous resterez jusqu'à ce que ce nœud soit défait.”
Claire glanced down at the spoon still resting on the baby blanket. Nothing was different, nothing had changed. This time she picked up the spoon and cradled it close to her chest with both hands. She closed her eyes and repeated the incantation louder, all the while focusing on the unborn baby inside of her.
“Sécurisé dans mon ventre, une graine d'amour. Là pour grandir et s'épanouir jusqu'à sa libération par la nature dans quatre mois. Entouré de sécurité, de santé et de complétude vous resterez jusqu'à ce que ce nœud soit défait.”
Her hands tingled and she peeked down at them with slight trepidation. Much to her delight a soft blue was glowing in the palm of her hands. It was reflecting off the metal of the spoon and the green rope tied around it was now tinged a shade of teal. She smiled and closed her eyes before repeating the incantation once more.
“Sécurisé dans mon ventre, une graine d'amour. Là pour grandir et s'épanouir jusqu'à sa libération par la nature dans quatre mois. Entouré de sécurité, de santé et de complétude vous resterez jusqu'à ce que ce nœud soit défait.”
Now content, Claire placed the spoon back down and picked up the piece of parchment. She held it against the flame of the one of the candles long enough for it to catch alight and then dropped it into the metal pan. Smoke curled up as the botanical ingredients burned along with the words and she found herself unable to look away from the glow until it had fully dissipated.
Without waiting for the smoke to clear, Claire wrapped the spoon up tightly in the blanket and then used her thumb and forefinger of her right hand to extinguish all of the candles one by one. Holding the bundle carefully, she stood and walked over to the small cupboard by the bed. She crouched down as best she could and tucked it away in the back corner, confident that no one would find it there not even by mistake.
—–
Claire’s back ached and no matter which way she turned she couldn’t get comfortable.
She was eight months pregnant and she was grateful for every single day their baby remained safe inside her, she was. She knew it was best for not only her but also Jamie and their unborn baby to stay in bed for a few more weeks but she felt like she was going to lose her mind.
The stress of Jamie being arrested for duelling Black Jack Randall had caused her to lose so much blood that she had been confined to L'Hôpital for a number of days. Knowledge of her situation had evidently spread as Master Raymond, himself, had visited her during her stay . Initially he had been pleased, assuring her that the spell was holding strong and she needn’t worry about the baby, but then had moved on to assess the rest of her and adamantly insisted that she take better care of herself.
She adjusted her pillow and turned on to her other side. She let out a frustrated sigh when she found that to be even worse than her previous position.
Ever since being ordered by Mother Hildegarde almost three months ago to convalesce at home until the time came for her to give birth, she found it hard to sleep at night. More often than not she would lay awake thinking about Jamie locked up in the Bastille Saint-Antoine and in the early hours of the morning when she finally fell asleep she would dream of his death, herself forced to watch with her hands bound in black rope. While Jamie would suffer a different form of capital punishment each time she was always guaranteed to wake up sweaty and with her heart racing.
To make matters worse, she often felt like she was dreaming during daylight hours.
Despite Mother Hildegarde’s warning that the King would expect some sort of payment in exchange for Jamie’s freedom she hadn’t hesitated. She knew that pregnant women were protected by the crown, even to the point of pardoning any woman previously sentenced to death who proved she was with child while on death row, and had prayed to whatever God that might be listening that the King himself would not expect a heavily pregnant woman to service him. What she hadn’t expected was to find herself judging the fate of not only Master Raymond but the Comte St Germain, too.
Since then, memories from that day would play through her mind on random occasions, often prompted by the smell of incense or the sound bells tolling in the street. She couldn’t help but wonder what had become of Master Raymond and she prayed for forgiveness for what she had inadvertently done to the Comte.
Still, it meant Jamie being released and she would do it all again if it meant they could be together. All three of them.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a soft knock on the door followed by a muffled “Madame?”
Intrigued by the excited tone of the voice she recognised as Suzette’s, Claire climbed out of bed and pulled on her robe as she walked to open the door.
“Yes?”
“You must come, Madame.”
“Wait, Suzette. Come? Where?”
“Downstairs,” Suzette grabbed her hand and held it in both of her own. “Everyone is so pleased.”
Still perplexed by what was happening, she tiredly followed Suzette all the while holding in the yawn that threatened to escape. She held on tightly to the railing as they made their way down. It was dark with only candles lit here in there to guide them but she could see and somehow feel the glow coming from below. As they reached the landing Suzette bobbed to curtsey someone in front of her and promptly walked away.
Claire stopped and so too did her heart. There waiting for her was Jamie, looking up at her with shadowed eyes somewhat hidden by the long curls falling around his face. His clothes were the same as he had worn the last time she had seen him except now they were torn and faded in places. All of this accompanied by the long beard that had grown during his time at the Bastille he looked like a completely different person. And somehow exactly the same.
“Claire.”
His voice was raspy, as though he had been ill or perhaps even crying recently but it was the best sound she had ever heard. She pulled up the skirt of her robe and rushed forward only to be reminded of her large stomach as she flung her arms around him and pulled him into a crushing embrace.
“Claire,” he said again and this time she was certain he was crying. He raised his arms and embraced her back far more gently than she had him. After a time he released his grip and she pulled back to watch him bend down to place his hands on her stomach. “The bairn?”
“Safe,” she replied. With anyone else her answer might have seemed rather out of place, most likely expected her to use a word like ‘healthy’ or perhaps even ‘growing’ but she knew that Jamie would understand her meaning. “My nose, however… is not. You stink to high heavens and are in desperate need of a bath.”
Jamie laughed and wiped his eyes. “Aye, Sassenach. That I am.”
Suzette was correct that everyone in the house was pleased by Jamie’s return. They set about preparing a warm tub and fresh clothes for him in the bedroom while Jamie tried to insist that she return to bed while he bathed but soon realised that it was going to be a battle he was never going to win. She suspected he might not have wanted to, either - he didn’t even hesitate to lean forward when she moved to scrub his back gently with a cloth. She bent down and followed the cloth with soft kisses to the back of his neck. Goosebumps rose and she smiled to herself.
“I can hear ye smiling from here, Sassenach.”
“I was wondering if you could still do that.”
“Do what?” Jamie turned his head to look back at her and she pulled back slightly so that he wouldn’t have to crane his neck so much.
“Know everything about me, without sight nor sound.” This time she kissed him on the lips long and slow, as if attempting to make up for all the time they’d spent apart. Eventually she pulled back and ran the palm of her hand down the side of his still furry jaw line. “Let’s get rid of this shall we? I want to be able to kiss you and not be prickled all over.”
“All over?” Jamie smirked at her. Both his words and his expression were half-hearted but she couldn’t have cared less, simply happy that his natural forever-youthful state was starting to reappear. She slapped him on the shoulder playfully with the cloth before dropping it into his lap.
“Only if you’re lucky,” she teased and went to over to gather the razor and soap.
She could remember shaving Frank’s face for him, once upon a time in her previous life. She had always felt it was an intimate act, trusting someone else to do it and she had been so proud of the fact that he would ask such a thing of her. But shaving away the remnants of Jamie’s beard, of his time in confinement, she found it to be even more intimate than any other. Jamie’s physical body not only relaxed and surrendered itself to her hands but his soul was hers to hold as well.
It was late by the time they climbed into bed and they laid in silence for a time simply enjoying each others presence.
“How long?” She finally asked.
“Two weeks.”
Claire nodded and pulled his arm tighter around her middle. She had know all along that his return was only temporary. The King would never allow for a convicted Scottish criminal to not only be pardoned but remain living on crown land. She also knew that Jamie would have a plan. “What are we going to do? I don’t think I can go anywhere right now.”
“Nay,” Jamie confirmed. “Fergus and I will set sail for Scotland at the end of the week. We will make our way to Lallybroch and send word when we have arrived and preparations have been made for you and the bairn.”
“I’ve only just gotten you back,” she pouted and Jamie kissed her lips with a chuckle.
“I dinna wish to part from ye either, Sassenach, but ken that I also willna leave ye alone. Murtagh has agreed to remain here with ye and then escort ye home to Lallybroch once you and the bairn are well enough to make the journey. But dinna fash,” Jamie slid his hand down over her hip and grabbed a hold of her buttock, “for I’m here now.”
“Yes, you are,” she agreed and leaned up to kiss him properly.
As tired as both of them were, their affections remained chaste and before long the two of them had fallen asleep in each other’s arms with their unborn baby nestled between them.
—–
Every day for the past week she had considered untying the knot around the apostle spoon and each time she walked past the cupboard in which it resided the idea had only become more tempting.
That morning when she couldn’t even keep her breakfast down she had finally given in and untied the rope.
She was well aware that still being pregnant was a miracle, one that may never have come to fruition had she not performed the spell. But now she was nine months pregnant and increasingly desperate to not only give birth but also be reunited with Jamie. She couldn’t deny she was being selfish but her back hurt, her abdomen felt stretched to the limit, contractions seemed to be increasing at a horrendously low rate and all she wanted was to receive some affection. Preferably from her husband - the man very much responsible for her current predicament - but at this point she thought she might accept it from anyone. Or perhaps no one.
For hours she had been walking around the house in an attempt to not only encourage active labour but also keep her somewhat distracted, hoping to prevent her from dwelling on what was to come. A sudden pain had her bending over and gasping for air.
“Milady?”
Claire reached out and gripped onto Magnus, suddenly thankful that the house was always teeming with people. She looked down and saw drops of red blood on the floor boards. She pulled up her skirt and found more soaked into the leg of her stocking.
“Milady? Should I call la sage-femme - the midwife?”
“L'Hôpital, Mother Hildegarde,” she gasped out and fell to the floor relying on Magnus to help her.
—–
Claire started to wake. Her hands moved down to cradle her belly but instead of taught rounded skin she only found a soft, flabby surface. Her heart started racing as flashes of the past few days came to mind. Arriving at L'Hôpital des Anges. Laying on the table and staring at the ceiling while people bustled around her. Someone - a man - barking orders. Fever. Dreams. A blue herring. She pushed away the sheet that covered her and moved to sit up.
“Where’s my baby?” Claire turned to find Mother Hildegarde standing over her with a hand on her arm. “Where is my baby?”
“Madame, do not trouble yourself. You must save your strength,” Mother Hildegarde replied and offered her some water. She barely resisted knocking it away.
“I don’t want any water. I want my baby. Bring me my baby. I want my baby!”
“Shh. Madame, Claire. It’s all right. Here she is.”
Panting, Claire followed Mother Hildegarde’s gaze to find one of the nuns walking towards them with a wrapped up cotton blanket.
“Oh!” The bundle was placed in arms and she relaxed, quite simply stunned by what she saw. She was holding a little girl with a head full of beautiful copper hair and, while her eyes were closed, she could tell they were slanted a bit like Jamie’s. She pulled back the blanket to count all ten fingers and ten toes, just to double check. The fresh air caused the baby to fuss and so she replaced the blanket and bounced her arms gently in an attempt to calm her. “Shh…”
“I baptised her. And gave her a name. Faith. You must understand, I worried that you… “ Mother Hildegarde started to explain and Claire nodded. She was far more taken by the infant in her arms than worrying about names. “Ta petite fille est parfaite, Claire. She is perfect.”
Claire couldn’t take her eyes off of her, not even to thank the Mother or even as tears began to blur her sight. She ran the back of her finger down Faith’s warm cheek and smiled.
“You are so beautiful, Faith” she whispered, her daughter’s name rolling off her tongue as if she had been saying it all of her life.
“Aye,” Murtagh said gruffly as he came to join them. “And yer father canna wait to meet ye.”
End Note: “Secured in my womb, a seed of love. There to grow and blossom until released by nature [number of months] hence. Surrounded by safety, health, and wholeness you shall remain until this knot is undone” (incantation courtesy of google - original source unknown).

A Lost Brother
Ho, ho, ho and happy new year @mricg, I am your Secret Santa. I hope you enjoy this little look at Jenny after she watches Jamie being taken away by the British.
Jenny watched as the Redcoats carted her brother away. Yes, it had been his decision to turn himself in, but she still had the terrible feeling of how she had betrayed her brother. It didn’t seem right that Jamie had to be the one to sacrifice himself for the safety of Lallybroch.
When they were younger Randall had taken Jaime while he was defending her honor, then she hadn’t heard from him for five years, as he avoided home, not wishing to bring any harm to Lallybroch. Then Jamie had returned and with a wife who she could see made him happy, but the moment cut short as once again the Redcoats took him away. When he and Claire returned to Lallybroch from righting that wrong, within months they were off again fighting this damned rebellion, which had robbed Jamie of his wife and his heritage of Lallybroch. Jenny was struggling with why this was the way things had to be, why must her brother be a part from her again, why must he suffer so much.
It was nearing dark before Jenny could bring herself to move from the archway that had taken Jaime away from her once again. It was young Jamie who got her moving as he came out to tell her that Mrs. McNab had supper on the table. Jenny blinked out of her stupor, she had never felt so useless in her life. What was she doing standing around being idle and wallowing in her grief? This was not the first time she had lost her brother, and the grace of God had restored him to her before, she would just have to pray that the same would be true this time. There was work to left to do, she thought as she turned and went into the house.
-----------------------
Dinner was a quiet affair, as most dinners had become as of late, but this one seemed extra quiet. The children all seemed to sense that something was off with their mother, and none knew what to say. The youngest had been fed earlier and were already in bed in the nursery for the night, but young Jamie, Kitty, Maggie, Rabbie McNab, and Fergus all sat around the table along with Mary McNab in silence, eating potatoes for what felt like the millionth time.
Jenny turned to her eldest son. “Jamie, after dinner we will go to your father’s study and look over the ledgers for this quarter. We need to see how we are doing this quarter compared to last and which of our tenants might be in need of some assistance.”
“Aye, mam, but I thought Da kept the ledgers in order?” Jamie questioned. He knew his mother knew about everything that went on at Lallybroch, and the place couldn’t run without her, but he had never seen her looking over the ledgers that was something his Da had always done, and he had just begun to teach him.
“Aye, but as you can see your Da isnae here at the moment to look, and we can’t just ignore things and let them sit, as a result.”
“But isna Da, coming home soon?” Young Maggie questioned.
Jenny sighed, this was the one question that she hated from her children. Unfortunately, each time they took Ian away for being a proposed supporter of the Jacobites, the time he spent in jail varied. On some occasions the Deed of Sassine with elder Jamie’s transfer of Lallybroch was enough to convince them and the British returned Ian home shortly, on others they questioned him more and it took much more effort to return Ian home to them. Jenny had hope that after turning in Jamie to the Redcoats that Ian would be on his way home shortly, as they had proven their loyalties to the crown with that betrayal, but Jenny could never be certain of what they would do. If he didn‘t returned home soon, Jenny would contact Ned Gowen to see what was going on.
“I hope so, mo chridhe, but I dinna ken exactly when your Da will return to us, and some things canna wait.”
“Aye, Mam,” Young Jamie responded, “we can look at the ledgers tonight.” This would be a different experience with his mother. He hoped he had learned enough from his Da to be helpful if Mam had questions for him.
“Good, the rest of you off to your beds for the night. There’s naught more to do today.”
-------------------------------
It had been a long week since Jenny had watched the British cart her brother away. Jenny was in the kitchen helping Mary McNab clean up from the evening meal when she heard the dogs barking out in the yard.
“Sounds like we have a visitor, madame.” Mary stated as she was drying off one of the dishes.
“This late?”
Jenny walked to the door to see who had come to Lallybroch for a visit this late in the evening. As she opened the door, she stopped short. She could see him hobbling through the front gate, Ian, her beloved husband, had returned. Jenny took off through the door to reach Ian.
Hearing footsteps approaching, Ian looked up to see his wife running to him. A smile spread across his face as he saw Jenny for the first time in over a week. These partings between them were happening too often, they would need to discuss and see if they could figure out a way to appease the British and make them stop. He couldn’t take another jail sentence.
Jenny stopped in front of Ian as she brought him into a loving embrace. The two held onto each other for dear life. Ian could hear the sobs coming from his wife and pulled back to look at her face.
“Mo ghràidh, it is sae good to be home and to look upon your face.” Ian said as he wiped away the tears running down her face.
Jenny responded to Ian with a kiss, she would need that boost of courage to tell him all that had happened while he was away. “Ian, you have nae idea how happy I am that you have returned to us, come inside, Mary and I will get you a plate of food. I am sure you are starving from your journey.”
Jenny escorted Ian inside the house to the kitchen. “Mary, can you fix a plate of food for Ian?”
“Right away Madame.” Mary answered as she rushed to the cellar to grab food for the meal.
Ian and Jenny sat across from each other at the table holding hands and gathering courage and strength from the other.
“Mo chridhe,” Ian began, “I’m sae glad to be back home with you, I hate when we must be parted, because of all this madness, will the British never stop their terrorizing of us.”
Jenny smiled a sad smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes, telling Ian of Jamie’s sacrifice would not be an easy feat. “I dinna ken, if it will truly stop them, but we have hopefully found a way to make then stop.”
“What have you done?”
Jenny held back a sob, remembering the image of her brother in the back of the Redcoat’s cart. “It’s not what I have done, it’s what Jamie has done.”
“Jamie?” Ian questioned, what had his fool of a best friend done now, to cause his wife such heartache.
“Aye, he arranged for us to hand him over to the British.” Jenny began.
“What??!!”
“He wanted to see Lallybroch safe, and he knew his presence here was only making the British harassment worse because of the rumors of Red Jamie in the woods. Arranging his arrest would prove our loyalty to the British and hopefully stop the raid. I couldn’t convince the fool of another plan. If I’d refused, he would have done it himself.” Jenny huffed, still frustrated with the stubbornness and sacrifice of her brother.
Ian moved to stand next to Jenny embracing her as she cried out her emotions over the loss of her brother. He didn’t understand why Jamie was always the one sacrificing himself for Lallybroch and his family. “I ken, mo chridhe, it’s difficult, but we will get through this. We must preserve and see Lallybroch safe as Jamie would have wanted.”
Jenny laughed, turning to reciprocate Ian embrace. Having Ian home had restored a bit of her hope and joy. “Aye, the fool would never forgive us if we let his sacrifice be in vain. Lallybroch will survive, for Jamie, and for us.”

Okay, so it’s been an age since I posted chapter 13, but as some of you may have seen from my update, I lost my mum in May and I had to focus on finishing uni. I passed my final placement, and essay, but I just have to pass my practical exam now (and hopefully I will graduate in November). You may have also noticed from my posts that I have gotten into several other fandoms recently, too. But enough with me, and on with the story.
This will be the second last chapter of this fic, but perhaps there will be some one-shots or sequels to follow in this verse.
CHAPTER 14
Previous
Brian was sitting in his armchair following another wonderful Christmas dinner prepared by his wife and daughter, with some input from his oldest son, of course. His family were engaged in a number of activities around the room and he could feel his eyes being drawn to his second oldest son and the little boy who was sitting on his lap by the Christmas tree.
His behaviour of late towards both boys could have been considered downright rude and he was desperate to make it up to them. He had denied them the chance to bond as father and son, but by the looks of it they were certainly making up for lost time. Truth be told, Jamie and Fergus were looking more and more like a family, especially with the influence of Claire.
Claire was another surprise he didn’t expect. Yes, Brian knew that Jenny had a friend who would be alone at Christmas, but he didn’t expect her to fit into his family like she had always been there. The way she took on helping Fergus without even being asked was amazing, his English was on par with what was to be expected of a 3-year-old.
“It’s a beautiful sight, isn’t it?” Ellen asked as she perched on the arm of the chair. “Jamie will be a wonderful father, because he has learned from the best. Ye didnae hae a thing tae worry about.”
“I ken that m'eudail,” Brian said as he pulled Ellen down onto his lap. “I had every faith in the lad. But I could see his own doubts when he would look at Fergus from time to time.”
“Come on, Brian,” Ellen chided quietly so as to not disturb the rest of the family. “He’s only twenty-one, an’ ye’ve hammered into the boys that they have to bear the responsibility for their actions. As far as I’m aware, fault in this case is the lass an’ no’ Jamie’s. I believe she had been the one to provide the condom, an’ if that’s the case, Jamie believed himself tae be protected.”
“If that’s the case, I bet he’s learned his lesson,” Brian said.
“Aye,” Ellen replied. “Ye ken Claire’s the first lass he’s shown an interest in in years. I’m sure he’s learned his lesson. So, ye dinnae hae tae be so hard on him. Jus’ remember, when all this happened, he was a silly lad o’ seventeen in the first throes of puppy love. I’d bet anythin’ on the lass seein’ Jamie as soft target once she realised who he was.”
“But when she realised that Jamie was just Jared’s nephew, she changed her mind,” Brian continued, everything finally dawning on him. “She realised that she was in no place to raise a son, so left him in the hopes that he would get to us.”
“Exactly, ye big buffoon,” Ellen said with a laugh. “An’ lookin’ at the two, in fact, three of them, could ye deny them the happiness ye gave them this mornin’?”
“I suppose yer right,” Brian conceded.
“Of course I am,” Ellen said with a smug smirk. “I’m the wife.”
***
Jamie couldn’t be any happier than he was in this exact moment. He had his son in his arms and the woman he was fast falling in love with was singing a quiet Christmas song. Claire’s voice was so soothing, and it was working wonders on soothing Fergus to sleep. With the hype and excitement of his first family Christmas, Jamie had feared they would never get him to sleep. But, by the end of the song, Fergus was snoring lightly in his arms.
“Yer a miracle worker, Sorcha,” Jamie whispered. “I didnae think we’d get Fergus tae sleep the night, but yer voice must be magic.”
“Doubt it,” Claire whispered back as she lay her head on Jamie’s shoulder. “He’s probably just tired himself out just like his uncle.”
Jamie raised an eyebrow in confusion and Claire motioned over to where Rabbie was sleeping, slumped against the sofa. “I guess we best get these two boys tae their beds then.”
Just then, Jamie let out a yawn and Claire gave a little laugh. “Make that three boys,” she said and pressed a chaste kiss to Jamie’s cheek.
“As long as ye join me,” Jamie replied. “After last night, I don’ think I can sleep wi’out ye again.”
“How will you cope when I’m back at school then?” Claire asked as she made to get up from the floor so she could take Fergus from Jamie.
“Wi’ great difficulty,” Jamie muttered to himself after he handed Fergus over to Claire.

The School Trip - Preview 🍎✏️🚌
Chapter 5 - A Wedding (Preview)
“So do we have any volunteers?!”
The tour guide’s loud proclamation was met with an awkward silence. Having not been listening for the last ten minutes, Jamie had no idea what volunteers were needed for and hoped one of the more exuberant students would put their hand up for whatever banal activity the guide had in mind. Interlacing his fingers with Claire’s, Jamie prepared to sneak away from the group unnoticed.
“Cat got yer tongues today? How about we get yer teachers up here then, aye?”
The chorus of laughter and clapping from the kids had Jamie completely confused. He looked over at Claire who appeared just as in the dark as he was, hastily untangling their hands as the students all turned to look at them. Cursing fate for once again thwarting plans to speak to his Sassenach, Jamie stepped forward; assuming he’d be asked to throw a horseshoe onto a nail or something.
“That’s the spirit!”
“Ooooh, Mr Fraser and Dr Beauchamp!” Heckled one of the students.
“Ye gonna snog her Mr Fraser?” Yelled another.
Panic crashed into Jamie like an unexpected wave; a sheen of sweat springing to the surface of his skin. He and Claire had been standing at the back of the group; how did anyone know they’d been about to leave? Wading through the crowd, Jamie felt the tips of his ears heating as though a candle was held to them. When both teachers were standing up the front the purpose for their volunteering was made clear.
“Now, let’s have ourselves a marriage ceremony!”
“A what?”
Claire’s shock made her cut-glass English accent even more pronounced. Jamie smiled; his Sassenach was clearly as alarmed as he was. The tour guide turned to Claire with unbridled glee:
“No need to panic lass, it’ll just be a mock one although I am licensed should you feel the urge to make things official!”
“Excuse me?”
“Ye and the tall red-headed lad, ye are a couple yes?”

Still tinkering away at the full chapter; hopefully will have it posted later this week xx

An Leabhar Dìlseachd [AO3] by @thetranquilteal
Claire Fraser had always known she was a witch. Her affinity for healing hinted at it and her ability to time travel confirmed it. What she didn’t know was that she would come into her full power the day she became a mother. Concerned with how her pregnancy is progressing, she seeks the help of Apothecary Master Raymond in the hope that he will be able to teach her how to utilise her newfound power and protect her family from disaster. A canon-divergent AU told through the pages of the Fraser Grimoire ‘The Book of Faith’.
A/N: Happy New Year @just-a-kid-at-heart - this one is for you! Thank you so much to @moghraidhjamie for organising this year’s Secret Santa Fic Exchange and ultimately encouraging me to write more.
Chapter 1: Inscription
To my darling daughter,
Giving birth to you was the most incredible gift I have ever received and seeing you grow into the woman you are today has been an absolute joy - one that words cannot describe. Now, I pass An Leabhar Dìlseachd to you, Not only to aid you in your journey but so that you may fill its blank pages with lessons of your own. Just know that my love for you is infinite and I will always be proud of you.
Your mother,
Claire.
Claire sat and watched as Faith read the inscription she had added to the book the night before.
Sitting at the desk in Jamie's study she had stared into the peat fire for close to an hour trying find the right words. How could one possibly articulate the significance of the past 18 years in just a few sentences? It wasn't until Jamie had come to check on her and encourage her to come to bed that she had stopped overthinking and simply written down what was in her heart.
“What was it like?” Faith looked up, one hand still resting on the paper not yet ready to let the words go. “Becoming a mother, I mean.”
Claire leaned back in her armchair and looked about the living room as she considered her answer. Lallybroch held so many memories. Both bitter and improbable yet no less wondrous. Her eyes settled on the portrait of her holding Faith in her arms hanging on the east wall.
“It’s... extraordinary. It's something that no one can possibly prepare you for, not truly,” Claire smiled as she remembered the weight of Faith asleep in her arms, so heavy she was sure her arms might suddenly stop working there and then. Yet under no circumstances was she going to put her down in the cot or hand her over to someone else to hold. Not even for a short while. “As I'm sure any woman could attest, you receive a lot of advice on what life is like with a newborn. But… no-one can ever prepare you for the connection that builds between you and the baby growing inside of you. Sometimes before you even know it's there.”
“When did ye realise ye were pregnant with me?”
“Your father and I were at the Abbey of Ste. Anne de Beaupré. I - we weren't expecting it. I mean, we had been married for many a month at that point but I was under the impression that I couldn't bear children. That such a thing was impossible.”
“You must have been surprised.”
“Your father certainly was when I told him,” Claire said with a chuckle. “I didn’t tell him straight away, though - not until I was sure. The nausea and the tiredness could easily have been caused by all the stress I was under at the time. The first thing that really hinted at it was the vivid dreams. It was a long time ago now, but I remember them featuring your father. Not so much his body but his soul. Always out of reach, a blue wall separating me from him. Over time, as my pregnancy progressed, my dreams changed and... so did I. By the time you were born the power that I dreamed of was a reality, something that I literally held in my hands.”
“Was it the same when ye had Bree? Did ye discover ye had even more power, then?”
“No. The first time was certainly the most profound - or so I found. Before you were conceived I was very much limited in my abilities but by the time you were born I was... a completely different person in terms of magic. With Brianna, however, I was very much the same before and after. But when your sister was born things were different, perhaps that's why I don't recall. We had lost at Culloden. Your father was living as an outlaw, unable to be with us. I was putting all of my energy into protecting not just the four of us but everyone here at Lallybroch. That’s not to say she didn't have an impact at all, I know she did. While you gave me power, Brianna gave me strength. I don't believe I would have been as successful if not for having the both of you.”
Claire reached her hand across to her daughter in offering and Faith met her half way with a smile that confirmed she was being just as maudlin as she suspected.
“Will ye tell me, Mam? The stories?”
“Surely you're tired of listening to an old woman's tale by now?” Claire released Faith's hand and reached up to brush her now white curls away from her face. A cause just as doomed as when they had been light brown in colour.
“Dinna let Da hear ye speak like that,” Faith tilted her head in jest. “Ye ken how he gets. All defensive and insistent that - not only you but the rest of us too - show ye the ‘respect ye deserve’.”
“He does go a bit overboard sometimes, doesn't he?” Claire chuckled.
“Just a bit? Mam. Please. Do ye no’ recall the time he forced all of us kids to sit down and listen to him talk about ye for so many hours, Young Ian fell asleep on the floor?”
“All because someone knocked over and broke the cauldron that I had brewing in my greenhouse? And the culprit ended up being-”
“That stray dog Fergus had been feeding scraps to!” They both said in unison and laughed at the shared memory.
“Oh, go on,” Claire waved her hand at the book still sitting in Faith's lap and glanced out the window to check the location of the sun. “We've enough time before anyone comes looking for us.”
Faith turned the page with unrestrained glee and began to read aloud.
