These screaming matches aren’t out of the ordinary for them recently. They usually make a good team, but sometimes their methods of handling missions are a little too different. “I had them right where I wanted them. Stupid men will tell you all their secrets if they think you’re dead anyway.” Regulus turns the sink on its hottest level and begins furiously scrubbing at a pot from the stove.

Keeping track of who has more so at the end of each month the loser has to take the winner out on a date. Well, James has been calling them dates. Regulus prefers to call them “work dinners.” 

“How could I forget? You’ve been rubbing it in for the last three months in a row you arrogant fucking asshole!”

“Aw love don’t get jealous. I’ll let you win next month if you want. Take you someplace real nice.” The sarcasm is heavy in James’ voice as he leans on the island with both hands. Regulus’ eyes briefly focus on his forearms before he turns back to the sink, taking his anger out on the pot again.

“You’re fucking impossible,” he says. “I’m done with this conversation.”

“No you’re not.” James says, coming around the island to stand next to Regulus. “No more ignoring this, Regulus, we have a problem, let's fix it like adults.”

Regulus drops the pot again and turns off the water, taking a deep breath. “Fine.”

James takes that as his cue to speak. “You hate not having control. You hate to admit you’re wrong and you hate when I have to save you.” He can see Regulus’ face getting hotter with each word.

“Okay, we’re doing this. How about you?” Regulus shoves a finger into James’ chest. “You can’t stand it when I’m right. You hate when I take risks and they pan out and you hate that the agency values me more because of it.”

James swats his hand away, starts closing in. “Fuck the angency, they don’t matter.”

“They do matter, James. They’re everything!” Regulus is yelling again.

“Not to me!”

“Then why are you even here?”

“For you!” Regulus stops, mouth hanging open. “If it weren’t for you I would’ve packed it up a long time ago, but you matter to me, Regulus. You matter to me more than the missions or the money. I am here for you!”

“James—”

“No, don't tell me this is strictly professional or that we’re just partners because it’s been more than that for a long time and you know it.”

“I—” He’s staring at James with giant gray eyes, mouth opening and closing around words that won’t come.

“Just have me, Regulus. I’m already yours, anyway.”

 “You fucking asshole,” Regulus whispers around what could be a sob. James can’t tell because Regulus’ fingers are in his hair, pulling him down until their lips clash.

It’s chaste, but intense. Their mouths stay closed but they press into each other like there’s nowhere else they could possibly be.

After a minute, Regulus pulls back slightly, breathing in short bursts. He is crying, James realizes as he feels the wetness on his own face.

“Regulus,” James tries, bringing his hands to cradle the other man’s face.

“Shut up,” He returns, kissing James again, but with something new. Something hungry. He kisses James like a man starved and James doesn’t let a second of it go to waste.

The Tragedy of Dutch Van Dir Linde

Warning: spoilers ahead for both Red Dead games.

Dutch Van Dir Linde is one of the finest characters I've ever come across and that I think about a lot because in many ways, he is represents the dreams that people have and the awful reality of it too.

Heytham, what the hell do you mean that this manic, selfish, delusional piece of shit is like you or me?

Here is an example. When you were a kid, did your parents tell you that your dreams will come true if you worked hard? And did you believe it? I know I did. I studied often, got a great SAT score, joined many extracurriculars, did volunteer work regularly, got a part time job, had all high grades in advanced level courses and in AP/honor programs and I had one goal. To get into my dream college.

I made my resume. I did everything right. I listen to what people better than me told me to do and I waited for that acceptance letter- so confident that I would get into the university. Never once did I imagine that I'd get rejected, but I did. For a 17 year old kid, it felt like the world was ending. I remember sobbing myself to sleep, waking up, and then just laying on my bed disappointed in the world and the lies it fed me. In a perfect world, I'd have gotten accepted. Worst people than me got accepted, why couldn't I?

But I moved on. Life continued and I was fine. I was bitter, sure, but I managed to get over it and work towards better paths and a better future.

But what if I didn't? What if I got hung up on that forever? What if I fought the rejection? What would I have done? What would I have not done?

This little experience, one that many people have gone through, is kind of a microcosm of the much bigger human truth that the world will never be an ideal place due to the human nature.

If I was like Dutch, I would have fought the rejection- I would stick so diligently to the ideal that I believed in so hard, even though that failure was more than likely a guarantee. I wouldn't find an alternative to be better and do better things. I'll get hung up on a dream and never move past it.

That's his dilemma. He believes in the ideal, like we all do, but he will fight tooth and nail to make that ideal real while we will sigh and realize that life will never be the way we want it to be.

Dutch feels betrayed by the world, or at least by his vision of the world- especially America.

America was a country built on the promise of all men being born equal under God and under the law. All men.

That was the dream, the hope, and the promise.

What happened instead? The continuing of the institute of slavery, the massacre of natives, the monopoly of magnates, and the constant discrimination of those not considered 'white'.

It was disgusting and awful and it should've never happened- but it did and people tried to remedy it in ways that were gradual but real. They found different paths and different dreams and though there is still much work to be done, people are finding a way.

Dutch couldn't do that though. He refused to do that. He wanted the ideal and he wanted it immediately, even though it was impossible. He killed for his ideal, he robbed for his ideal, and he led people to hell for his ideal.

But it didn't matter. His ideal will never exist and he couldn't accept that- which leads to his end.

He won't be caught. And he didn't get caught by commiting suicide- a final fight. He wouldn't surrender to John or the Pinkertons, because that would mean admitting that his entire life was a struggle for nothing because his vision will never be realized if people like Cornwall or Favours or the professor continue to exist. Life was hell because of those people and the American dream did not exist because of those people.

And Dutch is right! From the very beginning that this country was created, it relied on an ideal that turned out to be a lie.

And Dutch couldn't handle that and wanted a perfect world that can never be realized and he tried to get that perfect world by lying and stealing and cheating and killing. What a depressing dichotomy.

Now, of course, when it comes to the personal motivations of Dutch, whether pride, hubris, narcissism, or any of that, they can all by factors to Dutch's pointless battle, but his motivation has always been clear and it never changed-

"Yeah, I know it's tough. You like Dutch. He's a charming fellow. He makes sense. He's like one of those nature writers from back East. Only he takes things a tiny little step too far. Rather than just loving the flowers and the animals and the harmony between man and beast, he shoots people in the head for money. And disagreeing with him. Dutch lived and died to create an ideal that would never be real because he could never accept reality and that is one of the saddest fates a man could have.

The Northeast states watching out for each other, but they're subtle about it. Like dropping off a cup of coffee, but if someone comments on it, they'll brush it off like it's no big deal

in fact, many of them can recite, word for word, the exact schpiel jersey goes through every time someone asks for ingredients from his garden. oh my god i hate you get a job why are you always mooching off me. what the fuck do you mean you'll go to a grocery you're taking things from my garden. ill bring them over myself. idiot.

there's just a silent agreement that there's no alcohol allowed at parties anymore bc after Pa's like 9th attempt at sobriety they all had a big think ab where the problems were stemming from and that was the best thing they could think up.

because i am a heavy believer in jewish ne supremacy there is a wonderful period between rosh hashannah and yom kippur when they're all putting in the best effort to be nice to each other which immediately dissolves the second they have to try and decide who gets to use the shofar. they may not be able to physically fight today, but trust the grudge will be remembered.

the level of PTSD and just general issues within that group must be so intense but because they are emotionally represed. they just. arent allowed to talk about it. someone could be having a full breakdown but u r a member of the northeast and you should just let ur heart break inside and never ever talk about it because it would be Awful and Wrong

however. what u can do. is watch sport together in silence. maybe you'll even say 'good game' at the end by be careful of that one because its basically a confession of ur endless fraternal support, wouldn't want to get too deep would we.

and ur only allowed to talk about ur problems through jokes. haha yeah i still see faces of war in my sleep. haha yeah i cant cope w the guilt anymore. hehe.

so to answer your ultimate question, the most pain you can experience is not even your own, but that of ur brother when he drowns and you are not allowed to save him. but anyway.

Sonic hot take:

Sonic generation's Planet Wisp act 2 isn't just good, it's great.

Now I'm only defending act 2 (Modern Sonic's) because I am never touching act 1 ever it was absolutly horrible and by far the lowest point in the game for me, even worst than the less than climactic final boss but act 2? What a transformation man.

See this as a mini review of the level and why I personaly like it, if you hate it then less power to ya I suppose this is my opinion and not yours

First of all the opening to this level where you run through the open is one of the most fun to get right in the game, yes it did take me an hour or so to fully master it and remember everything but once you know how it flows... Man you feel like a demi god even if boosting isn't practical the platforming more than makes up for it, a bit too short if you ask me but hey even this opening section is longer than most Sonic forces levels (that game's awful my god)

After that there's the least fun part of the level where's it takes waaaaay too much from Sonic Colors and decides to be all about slow platforming, I can find enjoyment out of this part but I 100% understand people not liking it it's not for everyone.

Still this might be the shortest part of the level unless you really suck. (it took me 5 whole minutes to go through this part when first playing... Pain)

Then the part that still gives me issues even after all the training I'v been doing is the rocket/minecart parts, but even with it being the hardest to master... It might just be my favorite.

Now don't get me wrong one wrong move and it's ggs for you do half of this section AGAIN! The minecart aren't bad but you might wanna do a stomp attack to get on them faster after taking out the enemy on it down, BUT DON'T it will just send you back down cuz you'll attack too early, just let the flow carry you.

For the rocket Wisp... It's really nothing, especially compared to the slow drag that was Act 1's Spike Wisp. (it was better in Colors imo)

It's actually really fun and a nice change if pace to just go up with that Wisp and even if the last part of the level where you gotta Speedrun not to die, find the Wisp in time, use it at the right place is a bit stressful when playing for the first time it really becomes fun to play as soon as the 2nd try

Now for some non gameplay/level design reasons I like the level:

It, looks, fantastic, the whole game does don't get me wrong but this level might be the best looking level along side Rooftop Run act 1/2 and Crisis City act 2

The opening with the Wisps cheering you on is a really great recreation of the og opening of the level

The facility looks outstandingly great as well, a step down from the visual marvel that is the actual planet but still, incredible

The music too is... As expected from Sonic Generations, is a great remix of Planet Wisp Act 1 from colors, I wouldn't say it beats the original because the piano is just... Beautiful in that original piece but it's still an outstanding remix

All and all, you don't have to agree with anything I said... You might not even know what I'm saying but I apreciate it if you gave all this useless rant a read, for now just have a great rest of your night, day, space and time distorsion.

What is the worst fighting game? What is your favorite dbz fighting game? And sorry about your haircut i hope you find a style or a cool hat while it grows back!

theres a lot of worsts, theres a lot of nonfunctional games and truuuly shitty stuff out there. i guess i can answer this question in an interesting way by explaining that most of them come from the same era -- "after sf2 came out and achieved god level popularity," but "before most developers could figure out why sf2 was fun at all" - and remember, for a lot of people, sf2 is fucking impossible.

this era is pretty long, too, because it stretches from the n64 all the way to the ps2. it transformed through that time, in ps1/n64 gen there were a lot of 3d fighter attempts that, like, weren't able to figure out how to make a 3d fighter. they either controlled horrifically, or didnt have a combo system so you just poked eachother, etc, etc...

but im getting ahead of myself. look at a game like shaq fu - a classic 'worst fighting game' (but nowhere near the 'actual worst'). the graphics are amazing, characters are cool (including shaq) and the premise isnt that awful. but the game just controls so horrifically that the only fun youll have from it is laughing at it. jumps take for-fucking-ever because theres a huge animation for it that has many many beautiful hand animated frames lol

mortal kombat armageddon, a game i love to death for including every MK character up to that point, is decent enough to play but it is a broken mess if you look at it for more than a second. there's infinite resetting air combos, ridiculous juggles, characters that can teleport and grab you from BLOCK CONFIRMING an extremely fast projectile (think 2 of them in a second)... cool game but its Really Bad, but ill still play it if its around because fuck it and i like it.

my favorite dbz game is fighterz even though ive barely played it because out of all the Anime Fighting Games its the Anime I Actually Respect and they did a bang up job of making a fighting game that feels like youre Watching A DBZ Episode. i watched a lot of it at ECT because it came up before my commentary and my god, i admit, its fun to watch characters like jiren in that game

1) About 70s fashion: It has good things, of course (and I must admit I completely ignored female fashion because my mind is filled by hot men), all decades have. But I'm someone who will always choose the first half of the 20th century when it comes to fashion. Sorry.

And I do remember the crop tops and slutty shorts men wore at the time. So it's not like I'm immune to the 70s charms. Yet, if I have to say what decade of the 20th century has the worst fashion, I'll still pick the 70s. And say the best fashion is arguably late 1930s, late 1940s or early 1950s. But that's just me.

Yet, I must also speak about the architecture and interior design of the 70s. Is awful. It may be colorful and bright. But it's an acquired taste. And would you really choose anything built on the 70s over Art deco arquitecture? Yeah, I thought so.

2) About sex: Who says sex is irrelevant, dear Jude? I'm all for fictional sex. The thing is, both the Mafia and Hayes coded Hollywood have a level of restrained lust, secret desires and profound yet in denial homoeroticism. It's more of a matter of what flavour you prefer. And as submissive as I can be, and as alluring as Boss who can take my life or reward me as he wishes may be, I'm significantly more seduced by the idea of being forced into a world of hypocrisy, where I can be an active player, a star with my own shine, even if I have a significant part of who I am lost in the shadows. A word that shines like gold, yet hides what truly is going on. A world that is at once desirable and terrying, where there is always a real chance to simply retire and live in the glory, yet the temptation to stay is ever present. A word of appearances, of masks, of beauty, virtue and sin.

It's just so erotic. Even if there wasn't sex involved, it would be so erotic.

3) About superhero IFs. Did the nonnie mean the IF where one of the RO's cucks the MC? I understand the outrage, even though it was an interesting thing to try and it is really obvious is going to happen. But that IF has multiple other flaws stacking over that problem, the cuck situation is just more evident. I think it's made worse because that specific RO is like the most attractive female RO the game offers. Had I been straight or bisexual I would have considered only her as a romance choice. Although, that game didn't have very interesting RO's in my opinion, since most of the interesting characterizations and dynamics went to non romanceable characters. It saddens me the bad reputation that IF has, given that, if I'm correct about what IF the nonnie was referring to, the author is a fellow Latino.

Also, I understand the need to do something because someone said you couldn't do it. But just due to the decade you wanted to set the IF you would have multiple differences with all of the superhero IFs that I know of. Since most are set in modern times. Often, in regards to time frame, what makes them interesting is that they are an example of alternate history. Like Fallen Hero (God has forsaken me and made me, even if he is non existant, into the fan who brings up Fallen Hero in every conversation).

The thing is, superhero stories do offer a lot of variety. From the themes, the conflicts, the way the powers are relevant to the story or not (for example Unsupervised allows such a variety of powers they are not as central to the narrative as Fallen Hero, in which the story does not work if Sidestep had another variation of super powers).

I'll never be as brave (this is not a backhanded compliment, yet I'm aware it could be understood as such, hence this explanatory parenthesis). I'm too fond of playing around identity, I guess. POPPING OUT OF THE PLOTS PLEASE MEME TO DISCUSS A PLOT I'D LOVE TO DO AT SOME POINT: Doe, but she recognizes your muse from one of her dreams.

The scene doesn't seem familiar at the start; Hollywood deja vu be damned. It's a good day, a damn good day, a croissant from the local bakery kind of day; she's turning the corner, then life freezes, and she feels like she's been struck with a right hook that's detached her from reality & blown her clean out of her body. She feels like she's in the third person, and an awful tingling shoots from her chest down to the tips of her fingers. A face, a face too familiar, she sees it, she recognizes them. The dream, the lead-up, her death; she always dies at the end.

NOW HEAR ME OUT: we could play this precisely as it comes out of the package; Doe and the other muse, we'll call them person B, are in direct opposition. Doe remembers them alright; the cards are dealt, and whether or not she likes it, she's slipped onto the tracks leading up to her end.

Maybe Person B has had so much riding up to this point of deception and ultimate murder; maybe Doe isn't the only one with a bulls-eye on her back. Months and potentially years of planning are suddenly thrown clean out of the window on account of a deus-ex-machina type vision no one could account for.

Person B could try to play it cool, *don't be silly*, but one look in Doe's eyes and it's obvious. She knows everything. How? Who knows, but she does. Now they're trapped in a stand-off. Doe only knows through her dreams. She has no concrete evidence, but the slightest slip and it's game over, but just as equally as she knows, they know she knows. It's a stand-off. This could, in turn, escalate; maybe it's now a cat-and-mouse game. Them trying to catch Doe slipping and separating from the safety of packed public places and guarded areas, while she, in turn, is looking for *anything* to be their death sentence and to prevent hers.

Or maybe, despite the implied murder, it can remain a comedy and deceptively light. The obvious tense atmosphere remains, but it could be combined with high jinx and played more for laughs, focusing on mutual gaslighting to try and stop/enable the plans.

Or MAYBE it can be more of a murder-in-slow-motion sort of thread. Doe IS a horror character after all, her character IS defined by her death in many way and alternate take on her end. Be it her finding the strength to confront her killer or trying to run away again, it would still be fascinating to explore either way!

OR OR OR OR we throw the above ideas out the window and take an alternate approach to the prompt at hand! Doe's dreams, while ultimately ending the same way, often involve full scenarios and situations beforehand. Alternate timelines, potential outcomes, alternate versions of her crying out in anguish through time and space.

Sometimes, she just... meets people. In the dream, it's not a first encounter; on some level, she understands the full backstory, even if there are no memories to back it up. Yeah, this person has been my friend since I was five, I found this person while mistaking someone in a crowd, this person gave me a ride. It makes sense in the dream moment; the background is set dressing. But through the course of the dream, she gets to know them, befriend them, like them, before the, y'know. Maybe history won't repeat this time. Seeing them strokes a desire to reconnect. Do you remember me like I remember you? Bonus points if they, in fact, do... or the details of the dream come to start falling into place. But with the friendship renewed, Doe becomes more certain to defy fate, or at least outrun it,

Maybe the memories that come back aren't surrounding death but more of a background. What if the memories that come back are really sweet? What if they're embarrassing? Gobsmackingly horny, Doe is left consumed by embarrassment, trying to explain why she's not able to act normal?

THEY REMEMBER DOE. Oh my god, Doe feels alone in the shared memories, but they aren't. The other person may have similar dreams or tap into Doe, and there's that deep, intimate connection: I remember you.

Doe is overwhelmed by the memory of the dream coming back and crumpling in sheer panic but is comforted by the person she recognized. Maybe a short and sweet thread but potentially becoming more if they decide to try and help her and dig deeper... or perhaps Doe can't recall the full details, and they're the person she should be avoiding. 👀

DOE SEEING YOUR AND HER DEATHS AND TRYING TO GET THEM TO BE SAFE WITH HER AND GET OUT OF DODGE, bonus points if she tries to convince them in increasingly ridiculous ways by recalling specific events in the lead up to the death to convince them while trying to defy the clock and the killer coming after them

Some Thoughts About... Fuga Melodies of Steel 2

An evil army has invaded your town.

Good news! You have a hyper advanced magic tank with a laser that can destroy anything!

Bad news! Said laser is powered by a human sacrifice.

More bad news! The only people on board the tank are tiny children so to fire that laser you need to... yeah... commit a lot of war crimes.

Oh gods the bad news doesn’t stop! The murder tank’s AI is independent so it chooses when to power up the death laser, not you. And it’s brutal. It can even snatch a character out of your active party.

Fuga and its murder tank are back, baby, and... it’s pretty much the same game as the first time around! But that’s pretty okay because Fuga was a neat strategic RPG with a Grandia-esq battle timeline system. Everybody in a fight is shown on a timeline and when a character reaches the end of the timeline, they act. However, your tank has three types of attacks and by hitting the enemy with the attack they’re weak to, they get shoved back down the timeline and their actions are delayed. It’s not quite as good as Grandia because you can only delay an enemy once until it acts, so even if you keep hammering them with their weakness, they won’t keep getting bumped down the timeline. But it is still a fun battle system and the game has style and tells its story well.

There are some nice quality of life features in Fuga 2 (that the Internet tells me were eventually patched  into the first game).

You can now speed up the tank’s movement on the travel screens. It’s still kind of slow but not as awful as it was before.

You can now see what enemies are in the battle on the formation screen when setting up your attacks. No more fumbling with UI to remind yourself if the enemy is weak to Red+Red or Red+Yellow.

You don’t trade items for other parts in town, you just earn money and buy things. You mostly sell unwanted items for money but expeditions pay out cash items too. There are still a lot of trading events on a trip or giving things to people for unknown rewards in story moments so there is still some of the trading component.

When you’re shopping in towns, you can now see what items are needed for upgrades on the tank. That’s huge because trying to remember all of it before was a pain!

Making upgrades no longer has a failure chance, it instead has a “high success” chance that will refund some of the materials spent on the upgrade if you hit it.

The game’s difficulty is really uneven. I’ve had boss fights I just waltzed through and then fights against regular enemies that I just barely survived. It’s usually against enemies that boost their evasion so you can’t hit them or enemies that can boost their defense every turn for free so you can barely do any damage. Defense enemies you can counter by using skills, but that gets expensive quickly and some enemies can raise defense faster than you can lower it. But for some of the evasion enemies, no idea how to counter that early on. You just have to play a really tedious fight where almost all your attacks miss until the enemies decides to stop evading. It’s not fun or hard or complex, it’s just annoying. Towards the end of the game, you eventually learn some skills that are guaranteed hits but it takes a lot of leveling up to get there.

I did save scum once, but in my defense, it was a BS moment where the enemy magically jumped up the timeline and knocked me under half health in a single attack, activating the Soul Cannon and taking away one of my best characters. The game broke the rules, so I did too.

There’s a new Airship feature but it’s pretty half-baked. You can hire the ships to take you to alternate paths, destroy enemies, or drop off supplies. However, it’s way too expensive to use on your first times through the game. Even when going through New Game Plus and NG++, you’ll be saving your money to buy the stupidly expensive post-game items so you can’t afford it. Then when you can afford it, you’re strong enough to not need the airship to destroy enemies.

Story is the big thing for Fuga, but for new players, they do a really bad summary of what happened in the first game. Unless you played the first one, just getting a series of images without any text or explanation does not catch people up, so you need to Youtube/wiki that business. Like, it starts with a flashback and then has multiple flashbacks within its flashback. I would recommend reading a wiki on it all because the franchise’s backstories are bonkers but really neat. “Little Tail Bronx”. Even the franchise name is weird. That’s not the name of any of the games, that’s just the collective name for the three series that make up the franchise.

The story has a fantastic homage to TinTin and his ilk. I genuinely looked forward to the end of each chapter so I could get the next issue in the comic series. They put so much effort into it and they totally didn’t have to. Bless you, Captain Sucre and your owl that understands human language!

In Fuga 1, the moment-to-moment story bits were not great but the overall story was really neat and F2 carries that through. Some keen intrigue, magic tech, and really leaning into how depressing its murder tank mechanic is so it never becomes a power fantasy that glorifies war. In F2, you quickly find out that the uplifting “power of friendship” moment at the end of 1 wasn’t what you thought it was and is secretly extremely depressing and something you’re going to have to deal with now.

The characters, though, are such one-note anime tropes. It takes a LOT of time with the conversation/friend mechanic to get to their interesting parts, but some of them still just never change. There’s a fat kid in your group so of course his only role is to eat food and talk about food. Then you have the sullen jerk kid. The smart nerd kid. The innocent childhood friend girl. But then there’s Mei, your little sister whose role is to be damned adorable and if you loaded her into the murder tank laser, you are a monster. A MONSTER!

They do a nice job of laying the groundwork for future games without making you feel like you’re missing out on this one. Everything in F2’s story gets resolved well but there are multiple characters that you want to know more about and they stay mysterious. And the trailer/secret movie for the third game is super intense and looks like they’re going to go to some wild places.

An addition to the story is a new moral choice system, but it too is really half-baked. The moral choices don’t matter. No matter what you choose, the same outcome happens. Even if that doesn’t make any sense.

For one example, the villain deploys a drone to attack a town and your choices are to ignore the drone and go after the villain or to let the villain escape and save the town from the drone. If you choose to go after the villain, it gets away and when you get back to the drone, it’s already destroyed the town. If you choose to go after the drone... it got to the town early and has already destroyed the town. Way to make your choices feel utterly meaningless. I don’t need the story to do a complete branching since this was just some random town, but man, make it have SOME significance.

You do unlock some team moves by continuing to make the same “class” of choices (“Resolve” or “Empathy”) and they’re the main draw. You tend to make your choices based on unlocking the next move, rather than what actually fits the story, and that reeeaaally doesn’t feel like how that system should work. And the more violent Resolve powers are way better and more useful than the Empathy choices that actually fit the characters and story better.

Fuga 2 also has a really nice New Game Plus mode. There are multiple endings worth getting and all your character levels and tank upgrades carry over across your runs. Unfortunately, all the bonuses you get from the “moral choices” in the story are removed. There are events tied to your scores so I understand resetting that, but to take away the team abilities is lousy. You only unlock the really good ones at the end of the game so because they reset, you only get them for a chapter or two. Replaying the game makes taking new paths on the next run easier so you can feel powerful and stomp your enemies, or keep some difficulty by choosing a harder route and getting better upgrade materials from them.

The game seems more balanced towards the NG+ playthrough. The “Safe” routes are easy in the early and mid game. The “Normal” routes will knock you around a bit if you play sloppy. The “Dangerous” routes require you to play strategically. On NG+, you finally have the tools to counter enemy actions and you’re strong enough that delaying an enemy might give you just enough time to defeat it without taking damage, compared to the first playthrough where you’re so weak that you’re going to get hit whether you delay the enemy or not. Unfortunately, on NG+, you’re going to have so much health and special energy that the first two-thirds of the game are a total breeze. You have to go out of your way to lose some of the boss fights once you’re super upgraded (like say if you were a questionable person and you wanted to go for the “let all the children die” ending. Hypothetically, of course). They really made getting the bad ending super difficult. You’re going to need all those upgrades and tons of items at the end if you want to be a bad person and that really helps sell that this ending is not good and not something you should be striving for.

If you’re interested in the series (and are okay with the, ya know, fictional war crimes), there’s a demo for the first game on the Playstation and Switch stores that is irresponsibly long. It’s like a quarter of the full game so it gives you a really deep look at what you’re in for. These are well-made games with a lot of effort and care put into them so I hope the series does well (and we get that third game).

Blink and Ten

Well, it's been a hot minute, innit? Wait... i don't think that's how innit gets used. Well... whatever.

Fuuuuck the boss fight in this one. i don't know if it's some issue wiv changes between LBP2 and 3, or just poor design from the chump, but if your boss fight is lasting 14 goshdarned minutes, something has gone well sideways. The level preceding is actually pretty fun. The first act has a nice gimmick and pretty smooth flow; the second has a couple of issues wiv the speed and distance from some of the obstacles, but is overall an enjoyable bit that gets good use from the grappling hook; then the third act boss just tosses the biggest spanner in the level's momentum. The framing device of the spiteful wizard/game master is cute, tho', and the overall look hits a nice sweetspot for me.

Someone on the sbureddit had wanted the music from this one recorded, which is why i spent so much time screwing around in that first room. It looks like it's meant to be the hub/tutorial section for a multi-level sidescrolling beat 'em up, which might be fun. Shame it broke the way it did. Don't know if this was originally done in LBP2 and ported into LBP3 or what, but it looks like they were using a custom bot, and once that despawned/refused to respawn, well there goes the only way to interact wiv the level (they may have gone the bot route for sizing/proportion issues wiv the environment, which is something i've run into myself when trying to make things look properly scaled). The music was good, at least.

Now, i doubt when they made this level, the creator was thinking that 11years in the future someone would put it on YouTube and have to put that whole title on a title card and overlays, but even still... that whole title can piss up a rope. Gods but it is so awkward. And long. The level is. Well. i mean. It is a level. You can definitely say that much.

This one's fine, really. It's got a nice enough look to it, and a well-chosen Velvet Audio track to back it. Didn't really like that you have to die to pick up one of the few point bubbles, but that's a thing sometimes. i don't know, personally, if it has enough oomph to really deserve its Team Pick, but i don't know what standards they use for that at the end of the day. Plus, like, even if the Team Picks are twice monthly, that's an awful lot of them since LBP1 started. Wait. Are they twice monthly? Have they been going on since day one? Heck. i can't even remember anymore. All i'm saying is all of them are a winner, but not every one is necessarily a winner, you know? There's a LittleBigPlanetarium sticker in here. i used to have an account there. It's always a little bittersweet to see the old fansite stickers in levels.

We talked about this one last Friday. Pretty sure i've got nothing more to say about it right now.

i liked this one well-enough. It has a decent, if not particularly zippy pace to it, and the velociraptor stuff was simple, but fun. The presentation was a touch too clean for my taste, but the use of bold red highlights help keep it from looking all drab grey and brown that factory theme levels in LBP tend to drift toward; also there's some nice use of smaller stickers and decorations to give things a good texture. All that said, it has this oddly empty feeling to it that i tend to associate wiv LBP3 levels. Not, like, emotionally empty, just... i don't know... like there's too much screen and not enough in it? Does that make sense? Side note, but i'm kind of ashamed that i've known of shimokita893 as a creator forever, and only just got the pun in their name. This despite it being one that honeybunny used to say all the time.

Oof but that bounce pad bit. i think they might be too close together, and being in two different layers was making something go wonky, but that section was such a pain in the butt. Also, this level gives us a great example of why we either need checkpoints directly after mechanical heavy bits, or we have to set them up to reset after they've been passed. If you watch all the way to the end of the video (or skip there. It's ok. i don't care about my analytics), you can see a nice bit of me bricking the whole level because i died too early, and instead of having an obstacle to progress the stage again, i just had a big hole to the floor of create mode. Ope.

This is another one that really needed more playtesting and editing passes. There are a lot of breaks in the level, and communication wiv the player is... well, frequently unclear, you could say. It is very pretty, and it was kind of nice to have an excuse to play as Toggle again. Shame the whole thing is so dark, you often don't get to take in the detail work.

Nice. Ok, more seriously, we just get this one scene here, and it's presented nicely enough. A bit strange they actually let us play it, instead of locking it into a camera like you usually get wiv eyecandy-style levels. Maybe it's meant for RP? i can't say. i can say the creator left a very nice comment on my level, and i looked at their moon, and they had levels to play, and so we had an episode. That was cool. i'm trying to expand the range of creators i'm looking at.

i like this one so much. i don't know if it's the best race i've played in LBP, but it's definitely high on the list. Once it gets past a little choppiness early on in the level, it plays so smooth. So much so, i actually wanted to go back and play it (and did) multiple times to see if i could trim a little bit of time off my record, and that's a rarity for me. The way the secrets are tucked away too, is a really nice touch. It's funny, because Woutery is almost exclusively a music creator, so playing this, and it was, like, "wait, could you do this the whole time?" There is a funny little break in the level, but i don't know how i triggered it, and couldn't replicate it, so... guess its just my usual silly luck.

Here’s to Larry

If you are a Dallas Cowboy fan, you have probably heard the news. My prayers go out for his soul and to his family that they be supported in their grief.

There hasn’t been too much in detail yet and unfortunately there will probably be some eventually. I am not one to read obituaries or comb the news looking for excessive facts about a person or celebrity’s death so I will just wait and see if I run across the morbid details.

What is really important is a very important person has died and not just a VIP because of a sport, but more importantly because of who he was to his family and friends. I did not know him, but the people who did are speaking very highly of who he was to them.

I do not write about the Cowboys as much as I did nor even talk about them as much with friends and family. They are one frustrating team even as of late. Sure they started making the playoffs again year after year, but watching them come out flat at the start of playoff games and lose year after year is just mind boggling. And I am not writing to talk about that.

One play early on in Larry Allen’s career said so much to me about what type of player and teammate he must have been. I cannot remember all the details, but I do remember the Cowboys were playing New Orleans and were not doing well in that game and maybe even the year. He was a rookie or second year player. There was a turnover, cannot remember if a fumble or interception, however the New Orleans player had the ball and had one heck of a head start, yet Larry Allen chased the player down and tackled him. And this wasn’t a turn around and catch the opposing player, no this was a full fledge sprint for tens of yards down the field to tackle him. He was already out of the play by the time the New Orleans player was sprinting down the field, but Larry didn’t give up and caught him. Truly an inspiration to watch.

He was a great offensive lineman no doubt, but that play above for some strange reason stuck in my head. I can still vaguely see him running across my television set and make the tackle.

Unfortunately for the Cowboys this era has long ended. Yes we would like it back, yet for now no such luck.

This also reminds me how fleeting for a fan when your team wins a championship. As a player, winning the ultimate prize stays with you for life, no matter what else happens or at what level of your championship. For many people the camaraderie, the memories, the friendships the ultimate sense of accomplishment stay with you for life. For a fan it comes and goes leaving you wanting more. Living it vicariously is wonderful, but once it has come and gone you are left with the desire to have it happen again. Like a drug fix, it doesn’t truly satisfy like actually winning that trophy.

I did not play professional sports, no where near in fact, but I did win I was young and to this day I can still remember defining plays in my head. The lights of night games shine bright in the recesses of memory. I have seen the Cowboys win all their championships, and their losses in the Super Bowls, I stayed up until God knows what hour when the Stars won a Stanley Cup and watched with awe as the Mavericks beat the LeBron lead Heat to win the NBA finals. And of course there was the oh thank God moment last fall when the Texas Rangers won the World Series. All of those moments come with nerve wracking evenings hoping beyond hope.  Yet the details of those games fade over time and I cling like all fans to the hope of the next Championship. On a side note what is funny I do remember the time a pass bounced off Jackie Smith in the end zone against Pittsburgh or the infamous tip or no tip pass against Baltimore in those two losing championship games or the ice bowl against Green Bay and watching Bart Starr cross the goal line with about 20 seconds left. Funny how those moments stick with me as a fan. I do not know why, but I digress.

And Larry Allen was an integral part of the Cowboys for years and contributed greatly to their last shining moment in the 1990’s, yet for some reason that one play mentioned above is the one I most remember.  He played past the prime of the 90’s teams and only had one ring, but I am sure that game meant more to him than I can even begin to relate. The best I remember from that game is that the defensive back, Larry Brown won the MVP for the game due to multiple interceptions. I looked up his name just to be sure, thankfully my memory is working.

I still remember when my favorite Dallas Cowboy passed away, yet he had long since decided to live a quiet life after living a very public life. I was sad, yet it was easy to accept. Don Meredith definitely lived a full life, unfortunately Mr. Allen had a bit more of life in him.

So to all the Cowboy fans, well all sports fans everywhere enjoy when your team wins, try a bit harder to ingrain into your memory those moments because they are as fleeting as life. Larry Allen will be missed by his family and friends and a whole slew of Cowboy fans even though we did not know him personally. Let us hope we ingrain who he was as a player in our heads and who he was as a person in our hearts.

These championships we yearn for are won by individuals who have dedicated their lives to being the best at their sport and position they can be. Unfortunately, we lost a very young man for whatever reason who did climb that mountain and he will be missed. Let’s hope we remember the man as much as the player.

my new period just started, and we're learning about - ahem - "health technological innovations + EU" while, i'm icked by the amount of law we'll be doing alongside, i'm hitting the T of STEM, so we love that!! i have hit, s, t, and m so far !! i don't think i'll be getting close to the E until maybe next year on erasmus ??? or master's !! 😭😭 but i'm so glad to hear that you're making progress (hopefully it's going well !! or else, i might have to bring out the whatchamacallits (also look! my computer recognised it, i swear, i got so surprised !!!)

oh my gosh, i so relate !! because, that paper started off about care for xyz disease comparing east/western europe !! it ended up turning into something msm, and i swear - it wasn't pretty. i kid you not, i had DREAMS of google scholar with the search bar full of "MSM" and other boolean operators and other disease names. i hated it, but i passed so we love.

Since you also love the last of us (wow we love taste) were you a newer fan that played tlou1 and 2 back to back or did you play tlou1 around the time it came out, waited like 7 years just to have **spoilers** a beloved character die within one hour of the game in such a brutal way. Ill admit i was PISSED and so sad like i never cried that much over a character but then i simmered down and realized that ellie was always the center of the story not joel. And absolutely love how complicated and how it tested us and catapulted these discussions like whos in the right? Is anyone right? There’s no heros or villains it’s just people in awful and hostile environments who are used to resorting or seeing extreme violence in order to survive or to even cope.

the first game i got for ps3 was gta5, followed by the last of us. i have a CORE memory of playing the building level (after leaving the boston QZ) for the first time on the lightest difficulty shaking like crazy bc runners were so scary😭😭 (i was like 11 okay). and yeah this was 2013 when it came out

tlou1 is still my favorite game of all time. it’s the best. when i heard about the second one coming out (this was 2020 i think…?) i was excited but scared. this was also around the time aot season 4 was announced, and i was scared about that too bc😭😭what if the new content isn’t as good or ruins things. i tried to keep my expectations low

i think a week before it dropped, there were the leaks about joel dying. and whenever i get spoiled for anything i just gaslight myself into believing i was misremembering a joke, or it was proven to be a troll💀

brooo this is a core memory too. i was sitting on the edge of my bed playing in the dark like a foot in front of my tv and was crying just at the beginning sequence with joel singing to ellie. (happy crying)

the death scene was traumatizing and shocking at first more than anything and yeah i felt soooo betrayed😭😭but i was like ‘okay this is a rly ballsy move. JOEL? one of the most iconic characters in gaming atp? the game has to be exceptional’

ugh i can’t remember my opinions from back then. but it was easy to get on the hate train that was IN FULL FORCE back then. i remember it was so fucking sad to see the reception. ppl were saying the 10/10 reviews were paid off, laura bailey who played abby getting just BULLIED off social media with death threats. horrible times

god you’re so right. you know it’s extremely similar to aot in several ways, with tlou telling a story that holds no punches and completely reflects the complexities of actual real people, what morals are objective and subjective, how far can you take revenge before it destroys you, stuff like that. a story expertly told and a game expertly designed, also.

i love the last of us 2 these days lol. ofc there’s what everyone agrees with - it’s a technical marvel, the graphics are unbeatable, voice acting, sfx, the accessibility options established what should be an industry standard (i’ve seen reviews from blind gamers who enjoyed tlou2).

i love the story. it’s SO much more than ‘revenge bad’. I ARGUE that the first game was about JOEL’S revenge on humanity for taking away his only daughter, but.. i’m getting sidetracked.

it’s not perfect. some things should’ve been more deeply established or scenes reordered. that is to say it’s not tlou 1, but it’s pretty damn close to perfect for me haha!!

a highlight that’s on my mind right now is how the game is protected in a way by its politics. dina being jewish and openly bisexual, LEV A TRANS BOY AND HOW THAT WAS HANDLED BY THE GAME OH MY GOD LOML, ellie a lesbian, the gay flag and crosswalk in seattle, stuff like that. the edgy right wingers just hate the game on principle, and it being very very dear to my heart feels nice lol. ie, the way 4channers fixated on the rattler guy to hit lev in the garage door near the end.

CoD Purchase Notes:

I believe it has been since the last notes that I purchased Call of Duties 3, 4: MW, MW2 (OG), Black Ops 1, Ghosts, and Advanced Warfare. This completes my collection at the modest sum of 85 bucks. That’s half because Ghosts and AW only sell the “gold” version bundle with 1 DLC for 20 bucks each. Still, I’m glad to have access to exo zombies at all since it isn’t in the bad game of AW.

Since then, I refunded my copy of CoD 4 because I didn’t realize that my secondhand physical copy of Infinite Warfare included Modern Warfare Remastered! It said “download required” on the box, so I assumed it came with a download code that would surely be redeemed already, but no, it comes with a little 100 megabyte download starter on the disc itself which is amazing. I’m really glad I’ll get to experience that campaign in its best form and get to try the multiplayer with a few more active players.

I still have all my stats and unlocks from back in the day for BO1 and MW2! It’s crazy that I only have 30ish hours in the multiplayer of MW2 and didn’t hit max level when it seemed so big to me at the time. Same with BO1, with only 20 odd hours in the multiplayer (and a .67 KD, yikes) BUT I have 30 odd hours in just the combat training mode and god knows how long I spent in zombies.

Speaking of - I did do one round of Kino and got to round 17 solo after pack a punching the ray gun and m16 and getting all four perks, which I was very proud of accomplishing on my very first try here in the second-to-oldest zombies mode. I remember years ago reflecting on how much easier the classic maps were in BO3 compared to their original versions and now BO3 itself seems like ancient history compared to the modern CoDs and their open-world zombies too.

Also it’s crazy to me that Black Ops 1 has no incentive to use one gun over another! I mean, sure, there’s challenges for each gun to complete but they just award basic xp/points. The camos and attachments are just unlocked by purchase. I appreciate offering the player agency but I don’t have a strong desire to grind this game out that way. also kind of wild to see “equipment” as something you just respawn with instead of being timer based like field upgrades. Face camo is funny. Crazy to see this game have more reticle customization than any other CoD still. The red splash badges for double kills and such are also hilariously dated now but they seemed so cool and modern at the time. I was so excited for Black Ops 1 that I still call the Stakeout pump shotgun “Ithaca” from its trailer name by total accident. I also kind of miss how these older maps sometimes had more of an identity or gimmick than the dull modern maps. I did do 1 match of BO1 as a sneak preview and it was honestly a ton of fun and not nearly as clunky as I was expecting, though definitely a bit sluggish compared to what we expect now.

MW2 came first and I much prefer the idea of revisiting it and getting every gun or at least one gun fully equipped with attachments and camos. I do kind of miss the idea that the attachments are one-and-done “game changers” and that each attachment on a gun counts as basically an entire different weapon since it changes it so much. Pro Perks seem unbalanced though and as always, the effects are simply insane how some perks are devastating (stopping power) and some are nearly pointless. Very funny to see tactical insertion as a grenade, only 3 tactical, and the bizarre “blast mask” as a grenade. Also I had forgotten that shotguns were a secondary in MW2! I’ve already had a lot of fun in the menus alone and I haven’t even started an actual match in it yet. not to mention spec ops!
