*Ethos, Pathos, Logos*
Tumblr media
In this entry, I will examine the critical question(s): What is the main purpose of this artifact's message and how are ethos, pathos, and logos used in this rhetorical artifact to achieve that purpose? Is the way that these rhetorical appeals are used ethically?
To investigate these questions, I examined the Disney movie Descendants as my rhetorical artifact. This movie uses ethos, pathos, and logos to argue that everyone is ultimately in charge of their destiny when given the chance, which is overall ethical as it teaches children that although some things in life may be predetermined, nothing is truly set in stone. The movie focuses on the story of four descendants of Disney’s classic villains: Maleficent, Cruella De Vil, The Evil Queen, and Jafar. King Ben of Auradon gives them a second chance in society. These four are enrolled in Auradon Prep, a school that is composed of mainly the good characters and protagonists from Disney, and it is up to these four to change their deviant image. They are given a change in normal society to change their narratives, and they definitely do. Specifically, Mal’s speech towards end of the movie exemplifies this.
Herrick (2013) calls upon Aristotle’s artistic proofs: ethos, pathos, logos. Ethos looks at the speaker’s credibility and devlops their backing. Further, there are three parts into dissecting the speaker’s ethos. These consist of one’s intelligence, or Phronesis, their virture, or arete, and their goodwill, or eunoia. These come together to form a speaker’s backing to convince their audience to listen to them and their message. A speaker also needs to appeal to their audience’s emotions through pathos. This idea is more audience focused and puts them in the center. A speech uses different emotions within their speech to persuade the audience to feel a certain way. When the emotions correspond to the speech’s message in an appropriate manner, the audience is more likely going to listen and agree with the message. The last component is logos which appeals to the message’s argument. This is the intellectual rationality of a an argument and the truth of one’s form of reasoning. Thus, if a speaker does not have a higher level of reasoning, their rationality is weak along with their logos.
Mal creates ethos as a a role model by stating her new position after all that she’s been through. She states, “I choose good, you guys.” Through this statement, she is stating her definitive stance. There is no question in her statment as her mind is made up. It is important to note in the movie that as soon as she says this statement, she puts her fist out to her friends to unify them and join her in her decision. They have all gone through these moments togehter. They grew up together with their villian parents, and they have gone to school in a new environment that has shown them the potential of what they can actually achieve. And Mal wants them to take this next step together, of their own accord, without their parents. They are still free to make their decision since Mal is appealing to them, so she is still giving them the choice to turn back to their ways, but it is clear that they are all in this together and they will be in the future when they put their own hands with Mal’s. Through redefining their identity, each of them is still in control, and Mal keeps it that way.
Mal uses a pathos appeal to make others feel empowerd. “I want to listen to my heart, too. And my heart is telling me that we are not our parents.” Each one of them have difficult relationships with their parents. Some of them are grateful to them for taking care of them, but these connections became more and more skewed as their time at school increased. Thus, with Mal stating that each one of them is their own person, she is also stating that their parents do not control them any longer. Here, they can live by their own rules and live the lives they want to despite what anyone, especially their parents say. Further, Mal draws on her own heart, something that every person has. In doing so, she asks everyone to listen inside themselves. She makes it clear that they are their own individuals, but then she asks them to discover what kind of person that they want to be. In stating their freedom of the past, Mal makes it clear that the ball is in each of their corners.
Mal uses logos by stating her experiences and how they have affected her. “And I don’t want to take over the world with evil. It doesn’t make me happy. I want to go to school. And be with Ben. Because Ben makes me really happy. Us being friends makes me really happy. Not destorying things.” Mal has been through it, really through it. She grew up on an island of villains and had to find a way to survive. When she traveled to Auradon, she was faced with a whole new realm of challenges similar to what all teenagers face, such as coursework and fitting in among the other students. Thus, she has seen both sides, so she is able to make a well-rounded decsion about staying there, about staying with Ben, and about staying with her friends. When she says this, she is tearful, but sure. There is a new air about her as she establishes herself in the overall narrative while rewriting her own.
These techniques are overall productive in the sense that as children are the intended audience, they are able to see an example of someone establishing themselves in a new story. They are successful in creating their own narrative and can do so with support from their friends. However, as this is fictional, the manner of achieving this success is unrealistic. Children may perceive that leaving their family is the only way to establish themselves or at least the easy way. An accurate depiction of this is when a student first moves away from home to college, but even then, parents can still be involved and connected with their child. Also, this movie is a very extreme example of establishing narratives since teenagers are not usually offered enrollment at a very wealthy private school with everything paid for. However, these extremes aid younger audiences in understanding the complexities of good and evil and how they change easily change.
In summary, the movie Descendants approaches Aristotle’s three artistic proofs of ethos, pathos, and logos in a successful manner. Specially, in the chosen speech, Mal uses all three to boost her credibility, to reach out to her audience’s emotions, and to establish her own responsibility in this. Although it is a fictional story, there are many attributes that audiences can reach to and bring into their own lives.

Don’t come for me...
As much as Feyre sometimes is a lame character (IMO) I have to admit there’s something very sad about wanting your sister’s love more than anything and never getting it, even to the point where you don’t even know how to ask for it or where to look. In the whole series, Feyre always mentions Nesta, even more so I think then Elain. There’s so many instances of Feyre yearning for Nesta’s love or having a high opinion of her even with the harshness that she shows. She tells Alis to go across the wall if need be, because her sister will put aside her prejudice and shelter them, because that’s just the person she is. She argues in favor of her with Cassian in ACOMAF, telling him hey she really loves people, she just feels too much and she’s actually very thankful for your promise to protect her people and her family. She argues with Rhys even in ACOWAR at his insulting idea of her sister being unleashed to the city like a rabid beast when at that point they are still relatively new in their relationship. She asks Amren in ACOFAS if she’s seen her sister and is upset when Nesta chooses Amren to confide in instead of her or Elain. At the end of ACOWAR, Feyre is the one who is like stay out her, join this meeting, you’re the guest of honor when Nesta just wants to leave. Feyre is the one who keeps inviting her to many things that Nesta doesn’t want to be involved in.
This is sad in the way, that even though we know Nesta is traumatized, and we know that Feyre should probably be more understanding since she has also went through something traumatic, Feyre is still not completely loved by the one person she probably wants to be loved by the most. Let’s look at the fact that when Feyre mentions Nesta loving people, she always says that Nesta shows love to Elain, from the beginning to the end. Example in ACOFAS, “To say that to me, fine. But to Elain?” Elain is the number 1, the sister that Nesta puts above the rest. That’s the question she asks in the library in ACOWAR, “’Why do you push everyone away but Elain?’ Why have you always pushed me away?”
So, this is why I can understand why Nesta has to be accountable for her mistakes, because she’s made some. I think that’s a big enough reason for Nesta to have to be accountable, because you should never be allowed to make someone feel unloved. The argument of letting Feyre hunt is lame to me, because we all know they were all kids, and the dad should have stepped up in some way. But the fact that Feyre questions whether she’s really loved by her sister, I think is enough to say that Nesta needs to learn something.
Others have made mistakes, for sure, but they don’t have to be accountable for their actions, because they are not the main character of the book and the one person who is, is the one who is hurt by Nesta and not the rest of the characters. I think if they had their own story told, then for sure, accountability. But this book series, is Feyre, and now Cassian and Nesta’s story, so you see where I’m going with this.
So at some point, I understand this idea that Feyre is wrong to send her to Illyria, to deal with Nesta’s trauma like that, to not be more compassionate, yadda yadda, and I don’t fully believe it was her own decision I feel Rhys probably had something to do with that, he was the one who was literally like “perhaps there’s some string to be pulled, webs to be weaved,” or whatever he said in ACOFAS.  And don’t get me wrong, I love Nesta more than any other character in the ACOTAR universe, I just don’t see how you can completely dismiss Nesta’s actions, but at the same time accuse Feyre of villian-y. If Feyre doesn’t have a right to take away someone’s autonomy, then Nesta doesn’t have the right to make someone feel lesser than or unloved as I said before.
And, not to make this longer than it already is lol, in analyzing these characters and their actions, you really get to see how many people care about Nesta. The way she is for the most part. Like Cassian, you can tell he has so many feelings for her, regardless of whether he’s an a**whole sometimes, but she dissed him after they almost died together. Elain, she loves that girl, but she too is dissed. Feyre, read everything I wrote above. Even Amren, who sees her on regular occasion, even considers her a friend until that day they had an argument, which let’s be real was probably about her. And then ultimately her father, who came very late, but who showed he loved her, who said he loved her, who showed unconditional love really to Nesta who wanted to starve, and tried to starve them indirectly, and who used to put his cane far away from this disabled man because she was angry. So, I don’t buy this oh Nesta has nothing to apologize for. I hate apologies written in stories, personally, and Nesta is an action type of person anyway, but I do think that a healing arc that involves Nesta would have to have her be introspective and to really come to know that if people don’t love her, she pushed them away. People don’t have to put up with other people. Realistically, none of us can go through life as if we’ve done no wrong, otherwise there would be no growth, no maturing, no long-lasting relationships. We would suck and it wouldn’t matter if we were angry or harsh or had witty comebacks, we would suck as people because we do not show that we care about other people. So Nesta has to change, because she’s spent four books being like this. She doesn’t have to change completely; she doesn’t have to be Elain or Feyre or Mor or some other chick who’s happy-go-lucky or nice to a fault. Her personality doesn’t have to change. She can still be angry, but proper healing I think for her would mean learning that she must grow and improve, and that she has to take control of her own life, her actions, her past, that part that she played a role in, and everything else that involves her. Of course, people did her wrong, I’m sure people will still do her wrong, but at some point she needs to take back her life and open herself up to love and show people she cares. Because if her M.O. is that actions speak louder than words, her actions right now are saying she hates everyone including herself. And as we know, she’s not an island, as they say and she’s not sociopathic or a narcissist, so she can and should change for the better.
And, I certainly don’t say this to be like “you shouldn’t hate Feyre or the inner circle or Nesta or whoever, or none of them did anything wrong/right.” Hate them if you want, it makes no difference to me. It doesn’t affect me at all. I just think that as long as were analyzing things, we should analyze from all points of view. And I certainly think that ACOFAS is looking less, to me, like a list of sins that the mains are committing against Nesta and more of a web of their own trauma, their own pov’s of the situations, and the current climate of whatever their dealing with at the time. People are messy. Book characters even more so apparently.

Of Moons, Millionares and Mothers Part 2: The Ballad of Duke Balloney or “I’m Flintheart Glomgold and I Always Will Be!” (Commission for WeirdKev27)
Tumblr media
Hello all you happy people. I”m Jake, I review stuff and today continues my look at Ducktales season 2 story arcs, of Moons, Millionares and Mothers. And while this arc as a whole is paid for by WeirdKev27, due to the Arc’s length, 17 parts including 15 episodes and 6 comics (2 of which will be in the same review), this one’s special as he’s using his patreon review every month to do so. If you too want me to review something of your choice simply hit up my ask box or join my patreon at patreon.com/popculture buffet. You get access to my discord, to pick a short when I do a group of them for characters birthdays, help me hit neat stretch goals like my next which is reviewing a darkwing duck episode a month, and best of all EXCLUSIVE REVIEWS. And I just added one this saturday of a carl barks story centerting around wigs, legal battles and attempted murder, both by our villian.. and by our heroes...
Tumblr media
I will never get tired of that panel nor the boys inexplicably finding a blowgun. Point is it’s there if you want it at THIS LINK, but enough plugging so I can help pay the streaming bills and keep doing this... let’s get to the meat of things shall we?
This episode begins the second arc of this retrospective, The Glomgold Arc. And this arc was inevitibly going to come to this blog for two reasons. The first is that I have made no secret, in fact i’ve shouted it as loud as I can the neighbors are concerned, that I fucking love the 2017 Version of Flintheart Glomgold.
Glomgold is Keith Ferguson’s best role, tied with Lord Hater obviously, but it is indeed a tie. No one but Keith could’ve pulled off glomgold’s combination of ego, ham, and batshit insanity. He just makes the utterly stupid and wonderfully ludicrious things that come out of the mans mouth sound so damn natural with such an unearned confidence. It’s very clear that Frank had Keith in mind when putting this version of everyone’s faviorite South African Billionare pretending to be a Scottish Billionare and wisely built the characcter around him and his immense talent. I was not familiar with Keith at all, wasn’t even aware he voiced hater before this show but damn if that hasn’t fully changed.
Glomgold was also just in general a brilliant update of the character: While I know a lot of duck fans weren’t happy with this version at least at first. As the action figure sitting on my shelf that once road in a car with my david hasslehoff baywatch funko pop I have entirley due to my love of baywatching,  this insane music video hoff did in the early 2000′s, and just in general how gloriously rediculous the man’s life is when you stop and think about it for a second from a pay per-view concert that ended up falling on the same night as The OJ Chase,  to his kung fury cameo , to his weird insetence they never had sex on baywatch desspite mounds of video evdience and the fact the show was buit around the bulk of it’s cast’s sex appeal, to the fact the model of his pecs used for the spongebob movie was sold in an auction and on and on... I was going somewhere with this...
Oh right as the action figure, and previous praise, shows I am not one of these fans: The original isn’t bad, in fact one of my faviorite life and times chapters that i’ll be covering this week and talking about later in the review has him as the main antagonist and a pitvitol figure in Scrooge’s life in the worst way possible. Rosa GETS what’s needed for Flinty to feel specail: to have him be an evil mirror to scrooge, what he could’ve been had he kept down the path he started down in Africa. A ruthless, amoral asshole who will do ANYTHING to get rich.
It’s just often that isn’t emphasised enough and he’s instead just another one of the millions of generic assholes trying to get scrooges money sometimes with hired goons...
Tumblr media
Not only that but Frank really COULDN’T have him at full effectivness. See an arch enemy in the Silver Age, which STARTED the same year Glomgold Debuted no less, wasn’t a big deal. They were still considered your deadliest foe but they’d often, much like Flinty be shuffled into the rogues gallery, show up for an issue to meance the hero, then either escape, get thrown in jail only to escape from that easily later, or be presumed dead. The last one I bring up because it happened to Magneto a LOTTTT pre-claremont. For Fuck’s Sake Charles have those teenagers train to look for a body once in a while!
Original Flinty was built for that, and brilliantly so as Barks had a talent for it , as seen by the fact The Beagle BOys, Flintheart and Magica have stuck around ever since and even in comics overseas where Flintehart is replaced.. it’s by Rockerduck who Barks ALSO created. The 87 Show followed the same formula, which was just as standard for 80′s cartoons. It’s why Megatron took until his toy was canceled the movie to shoot starscream in the face.
The problem is villians evolved and the expecation became more that a true arch enemy had to be a true threat. While Frank and Matt COULD’VE made Flintheart a real and honest threat, he also would’ve had to make him a Big Bad. The probelm was those seats were clearly taken: while i’m pretty sure some ideas came as they went, the main story beats were clearly planned out well in advance: Webby being a clone was always the plan, as was FOWL, Darkwing being a fan of a fictional Darkwing who became the real thing, and Della being on the moon. So he presumibly carefully choose each season’s big bad... and thus Season’s 1-3 would be full up wise. Season 1 had Magica, who he made into a TRUE threat, yet left the door open for her to return as she did, Season 2 had Lunaris who even if they hadn’t fully thought him up, they probably had thought up the moonvasion, and Season 3 was what they’d built the series towards with FOWL.
Details probably changed, it’s very clear to me they were likely going to have all three buzzards be important and ended up deicding to pivot to it just being Bradford over time. But given how well they though tout the general framework, I highly doubt Flinty was ever considered as a seirous big bad.. and I know i’m saying this in an arc that tried to set him up as one, but i’m getting there simmer.
So they could wait for a season 4 that might not happen.. or make him a recurring villian. So Frank and Matt decided to do that and leaned into comedy. Centering him around keith who Frank worked with previously on Wonder and thus knew he could play a hammy manchild like no one else, they simply leaned into the goofier aspects of his personality. His being similar to scrooge became him being an intentional and blatant knockoff. As Scrooge himself perfectly summed up in episode 1 “The poor man’s version of me.. which to be fair still makes him insanely rich”.
It’s another reason to really love this version as while yes, they did make him a bafoon.. he’s a wonderfully, redicuously layered bafoon: He still contrasts scrooge perfectly, manically hammy to Scrooge being calm, especially around flinty, blantatly crooked to Scrooge’s died in wool honesty, and wasting money on revenge instead of spending it on his actual company. There’s more obviously but some i’m saving for the review.
Not only that but his insane schemery has a rhyme and reason to it: He attacks Scrooge every week like the saturday morning cartoon villian he is, but his schemes are always unwieldly and massively stupid, and he always goes with the first draft. It’s something the team enforced: the first version is what they role with because that’s how his sad brain works. He also is obssed with sharks and explosives, the former being given a suprisingly heartfelt and unsuprisingly insanne origin story towards the series end, and works them into every plot no matter how much itm akes no sense. He’s pure ego, pure stupid and pure fun.
So yeah circling back to him being the big bad, I felt he was made one for this season for two reasons: the first is while a lot of fans (raises hand) enjoyed this version, some didn’t like how inept he was, so this would give them a breif bit of Flintheart being a genuine threat again. The other was frankly... they didn’t want to play their hand. Lunaris WAS the big bad... but fans would get supscious if there was seemingly no true threat on the horizon. Magica popped up in episode 4. We didn’t know her full plan yet true, but all we needed was lena SAYING HER NAME and fans of any other version of teh Disney Ducks would instantly go “Oh shit there she is”. So fans would now have the expectation of a main antagonist.. but would be instantly supscious of Lunaris and Penumbra if there wasn’t one for the first third of a season it took to them, and it’d leave a gap in the story to not have someone driving the plot on earth.
So Flinty got an upgrade.. a slight one and we’ll talk about the eb and flow. And thus he got a proper origin. Now granted they could’ve planned this too, but this one’s harder to tell as the curse you me gag could’ve been a clever setup or could’ve just been a one off gag they somehow turned into an entire episode. So Flinty got an arc.. and a comedic foil, the other reason this was inevieble, and Kev’s faviorite character, Zan Owlson. So how did it work out for them? Well we’ll begin that journey under the cut.
Tumblr media
We begin our story a few months ago.... on every level really: the months ago shadow war aired when this episode originally good, the months ago I reviwed Shadow War (which via counting I found out was my 200th episode not counting Patreon. Nice), and most importantly for this story, the four months ago before the present day of Season 2.
Glomgold saying curse you me as he fell into the bay during the Shadow War.... only for once in his life he dosen’t somehow get out of it unscathed and instead passes out, almost drowning. He’s found by Fisher and Mann, two fisherpersons... Mann is specific about that due to being a woman despite the obvious irony. It’s a good gag. Flinty acts like he normally would.. hostile, demanding that they know who he is.. and while they don’t.. neither does he.
Cue credits and cue present day. Via a newscast with Roxanne we learn what I mentioned earlier: It’s been four month and Glomgold’s been missing. The general mood.. has been about what you’d expect.
youtube
Yeah Roxanne turned on him real fast. I genuinely wouldn’t be surprised if it was because he later openly bragged about stealing scrooge’s money during the shark thing on live tv at some point, making Roxanne look terrible for enabling him and for blatantly supporting him earlier. I mean.. how else do you get a corrupt journalist to do anything decent.
But with Glomgold gone SOMEONE’S gotta replace him.. and that someone is Zan Motherfucking Owlson. Top of her class at Mouseton Univesity, Owlson is the show once again updating things: previously they added Mark Beaks to the Rogue’s Gallery as he contrasts the 50′s (scrooge ) and 80′s (glomgold) idea of billionares from previous versions of the property being a modern tech weasel. Though instead of just one thing Owlson represents a few: The most obvious is she’s a woman of color: Having a black woman in such a high position of power is something disney would’ve outright vetoed in the 50′s and 80′s. Here it’s well accepted as it always should have been. It also feels like a delebrate move on Frank’s part: There weren't’ any major african or african american coded characters in season 1, despite the show being very open and accepting, so that needed to change. The other is frankly outside of Brigtaa MacBridge, whose also weirdly absent from this series for some reason and has taken Fethry and Rockerduck’s place as the most major overseas duck character to never get adapted, there are hardly ever any females on Scrooge and his richer foes level. He’s had the occasional female rival or suitor, but only Brigittta had staying power and while I love the idea of her, another person as rich as scrooge whose willing to spend more and has a crush on him, she badly needed an update as she’s essentially Adventure Era Amy Rose in a grown ass woman’s body.
Owlson also provides a diffrent dynamic in that she portrays the ideal of what we’d want from a ceo: She’s honest, works hard, earned her way as square as scrooge did, gladly donates to charity and is extremely charismatic and intelligent. Granted most CEO”s are nothing like this but still, she’s what we WANT them to be. Using the money not for themselves or taking big paychecks but to help people. She also provides something Glomgold needed: a straight man. While he has one in Scrooge at times, Owlson unlike both of them is a fully functional resonable human being. Scrooge, while a good person deep down, can be reckless, impulsive and greedy, and Glomgold had a tarzan like experince with sharks, goes on to name his dummy son sharkbomb, and tried to murder Scrooge on live television twice that we know of. She’s the calm, snarky, put upon sane person trying to reign in the crazy shark explosion man.
Owlson dosen’t get a ton to do here, but that will change and she does get a decent amout in the final scene. But what she does here establishes who she is and how sh’es FIXED Glomgold industries; She’s shut down the vast number of money sinking scheme related departments, set ups everal charities, and is even setting up a new one with Scrooge, Dimes for Ducklings. In short she knew exactly what was needed to fix the company and it’s image and did so in FOUR MONTHS. Probably even less given they had to be sure Glomgold wasn’t coming back right away. I guarantee he’s faked his death like 10 times just to try and kill scrooge. They have to make sure it’s real first.  As one last note before we move on, Owlson is played by Natasha Rothwell, a producer and writer who i’ve only seen outside of this in Love, Simon and Sonic the Hedgehog.. that is a weird combo of things that mean a LOT to me I haven’t been able to bring up here again.
We find the tv this was all playing on on the docks with a non-anthro segull pecking it while a bunch of fisherpersons go about their day. We also get this guy.
Tumblr media
Add him to the list of spinoffs I want THE LIST OF SPINOFFS JAKE WANTS: 1. Darkwing Duck 2. Donald, Daisy and the Kids 3. The Sabrewings 4. Tailspin Reboot 5. The Flintheart Glomgold Show 6. A Sequel Movie 7. This Guy Punching A Fucking Fish
So you might be wondering when any of our main cast are going to show up.. and why the fish puncher isn’t in said main cast. Well that’s about now as Webby and Louie are fishing. Well okay more acuratley webby is fishing because she genuinely enjoys it and Louie is tagging along so he can nap on a boat while Webby paddles him around. That plan is threatnned by her spear fishing and he suggests using rods instead, but they need bait for that.
Naturally, given we need to get this plot going our heroes run into Duke Baloney, aka an amnesiac Glomgold. Understandably, both of htem think this is some sort of scheme at first because waiting for someone related to Scrooge to stroll by his fish stand for some sort of shark themed trap, especially since he’s right near the water so he dosen’t have to worry about keeping them hydrated like that time he dropped one from a plane onto scrooge’s board meeting with two chainsaws strapped to it. But .. it’s not. While we the audience saw him amnesiac, and at first I thought that spoiled the episode... it really dosen’t. He still ACTS like himself on instinct, so your not sure if he faked it as part of some elaborate scheme or is really gone till this scene shows that, no he really isn’t there. And the how is simply in knowing the guy: Glomgold is not good at subtley. He has disguises and such, but their never remotely convincing. He could NEVER pull off  actually being a humble fish monger nor have gone four fucking months without yelling at scrooge or remotely contacting him. There’s also the fact Fisher and Mann 100% belivie in duke and back up his very real story of being dredged out of the bay. There’s also his south african accent, which actors including David Tennant himself have admitted is one of the hardest to pull off but Keith does swimingly, which is a hint.. but only on rewatch or for those who know his comics origins.
Louie isn’t convinced which is fair: even if Glomgold isn’t good at this sort of thing, he’s still tried it a lot. Webby however correctly figures he has amensia. So the two simply try talking to him. Fisher and Mann do get a bit dickish laughing off the idea he’s possibly Glomgold.. despite the fact you know you dredged him out of the fucking water 4 months ago.. and if you actually looked at the news, would see Glomgold disappeared around the exact same time you found Duke. It just annoys me because otherwise these two are great characters: Friendly loveable fisherpersons who love their job, have no comeptiviness and genuinely want to help their friend duke. The encounter does have them seeing a fancy money clip Duke has but with no other options they leave for now.
But while Duke has forgotten who he was... bits of glomgold still stir within him. And that starts when Duke spots the McDuck Industries fishing boat, the best fishing boat on the sea, something his friends are okay with.. but Duke naturally isn’t. So while Duke was a calm sane fisherman before the true glomgold in him is on full display as he comes up with insane schemes involving fish and explosives, before presenting a rather insane scheme to his friends involving getting engineering degrees and other stuff.. it’s as poorly drawn and wonderful as you expect from him. But what’s telling is that he reigns it in when his friends show obvious concern with his actions... something Glomgold would NEVER do. For one he dosen’t have friends. For another, he doesn’t care about anyone else’s feelings or thoughts.
By now Webby is also championing that Duke is a diffrente person.. which is true. Duke is Glomgold stripped of his hate and resitment towards scrooge. He’s who the man COULD’VE been had he not sworn eternal vengeance on Scrooge. Louie is doubtful that he’s amnesiac still.. but neither can quite figure out the full story so it’s time for research.. and for Webby to accidentally knock Louie into some lobster traps.. which given he’s spent the entire episode assuming an amnesiac man isn’t that despite all the evidence to the contrary, he earned that. That said these two were the perfect choice for it: All of the boys have a bit of skeptic in them, and we already had a plot with Huey being skeptical.. and even he would’ve given up by now as would dewey since he only has a pinch at best. Webby.. has none. She can question motives and stuff sure, but at her heart she’s a kind forgiving soul who belives the best in everyone. And.. its’  paid off fo rher. Look at the whole Lena situation, she believed in her, even while Lena was actively manipulating her,.. and it truly changed her, convinced Lena to do the right thing despite the cost, to choose love over the abusive monster who made her. It’s the only missed opportunity in the episode for me. Character wise it has exactly the 8 it needs to tell the story and focuses heavly on the five it truly is about. But not having Webby bring up Lena when we don’t hear her mentoined AT ALL during her absence (though to the shows credit they did a good job showing Webby still had never remotely given up), and it made the wait more agonizing and would’ve made her motivations hit even harder: that she belives in duke because she believed in lena and it was real. And while this thank christ isn’t remotely romantic, the point does stand: She wants to see the best.
Louie is a conman by nature so he only sees the worst, the weakest in people, the things he can use to take htem down or take hteir money. He can’t fathom someone doing good because he can’t fathom HIMSELF being good. And that.. says a lot.. but he’s accepted himself as a shady conperson who cares only for himself.. even if that’s not the truth. His inclusion here enhances his own arc much like Huey’s role in quack pack enhanced his. It shows that deep down Louie dosen’t think much of anyone.. and probably not himself. That he has to be shady and greedy to survive when that’s not tru. Sharper than the sharpies yes but also square.
One last bit before we moved on  I just found out though: The Crew originally had this as a straight up origin story: no kids, none of the rest of the duck family, except presumably Scrooge’s parts here, just Glomgold’s struggle with amensia and his past leading to who hei s now. Honestly I think that version could’ve worked, but likely given disney seems TERRIFIED of making a show starring an adult without a chlid and had to be talked into the child light Golden Lagoon, that was a non starter but I think it still works fine. I also foudn this out via a twitter thread of Frank’s rewriting history that goes in deep on teh production of each episode. Had I known this existed before writing this one, I would’ve used it for the other two arcs and most dangerous game night, but I intend to read through it so I have everything on the table from here on out.
For only the second time in her long career of researching stuff though, Webby has hit a dead end. Mostly because she couldn’t find anything on Duke.. and NOTHING on Glomgold’s past pre-Duckburg. The most she has is his visa...
Tumblr media
I want to frame this on my wall.. and someone is actually seling id cards out there, so I want this one at some point. It’s not Disney because they don’t care about fan merch like this, but then that just means they don’t get the money because they didn’t think of it or put the work in then huh.
But yeah with nothing else our heroes go to the only person they know who knows him well...  Scrooge.
Meanwhile Duke has .. this... I just.....I can’t put words to this truly bizzare surreal dream sequence.. it involves Glomgold going insane, the kids dancing on a bagpipe, and owlson is there.. despite the fact that Glomgold should have zero idea whot hat is. I think the kids mentioned here but even then, he somehow knows exactly what she looks like.
Tumblr media
Otherwise good stuff and it’s raining hard as Duke goes in. Fisher and Mann have formally added him to their sign, and warmly welcomed him in and Duke says “this is the nicest thing anyone's ever done for me I think” which is probably true. and makes what’s coming all the more heartbreaking.
But before what’s coming Duke has another thing coming.. Scrooge who the kids brought to talk to him. The two talk casually, the kids watch not knowing.. and then Scrooge comes back to them. Turns out Webby was, unsurprisingly right on the money, Flinty does have amnesia, and unlike what Louie thought.. he isn’t inherently evil. Duke is just duke.. and Scrooge has no intention of fixing the amnesia. And while that SOUNDS bad.. his intentions are noble: Glomgold.. was a throughly miserable person. He was never happy and never would be till Scrooge was dead by his hand and that was never going to happen.  It isn’t even taking an enemy off the board: Flinty is only a threat on occasion. Scrooge clearly ENJOYS their conflict: it may annoy him from time to time, but he clearly enjoys upstaging the guy. And as he points out, it’s not a brain injury or anything: Glomgold is practically immortal as Louie put earlier, and Scrooge outright mentions Glomgold’s taken a LOT of explosions to the face. So he’s in no real danger physically or emotionally.. he’s happy. He has friends, a calling he truly enjoys. There’s another reason too but we’ll see that in the final scene.
So Duke is finally happy... but it doesn’t last... the kids go out but a storms a coming, and Duke selfleslly heads out to save them.. only to get hit on the head and fall in the ocean again.
It’s here we get the 2017 version of Glomgold’s origin story. We did kinda get one with life and times, as we saw his first meeting with scrooge and why he hated him, long story short with the long story coming later this week Glomgold left Scrooge for dead and Scrooge’s response was to come back, kick the fuckers ass, tar and feather him and utterly humilaite him, leading to Flinty swearing vengance.
But while I love that version..t his one is just as awesome if not better. And it’s without having Scrooge ride a lion. Here we instead meet Flinty as a child Scrooge’s age... and as a shoeshine boy. Yup just like Scrooge Duke, Glomgold’s birth name, was an industrious young boy with big dreams. He also had unwieldy schemes from minute one, but Scrooge saw in this lad the same fire he had and tried replicating his own origin.
The problem was... the different context ruined it. Scrooge was paid by an equally poor ditchdigger the us equilvent of his pay: still useless in scotland, but a good lesson in hard work and not being swindled. Scrooge tried that... as the richest duck in the world and without giving flinty the same amount of money.
So Duke/Flinty took umbrage at this yelled at scrooge.. and pick pocketed his money clip. In the only bit taken from the rosa version of their first meeting, Scrooge never realized he’d met flinty already. There and then duke came up with his first true, and first insane scheme: Save the money and use it to mold himself into a richer, more scottish version of scrooge dedicating his life to one upping him and killing him. A “single white female” type thing as Frank put it.
It’s.. utterly brilliant... taking Glomgold being a knockoff as mention and just running with that... making Glomgold a LITERAL knockoff. This was indeed the plan all along: A way to have him be both south african and scottish and it was brilliant. It also gives him more depth and more tragedy: He COULD’VE been the next scrooge.. but instead of being his own man or learning any of the hard lessons scrooge did he doubled down on never learning anything and getting vengeance on an old man’s well meant but accidently classist gesture.
So Glomgold reawakens and while it first looks like he’s going to save the kids... he instead throws Webby into the raging sea, and steals their fish. Webby is heartbroken and Louie asks him “what about duke.” His response is heartbreaking as it is character defnting
“I”m Flintheart Glomgold and I always will be!” the lightning shot, the cackle..i t’s just such a damn good moment that underscores the tragedy of the episode as Glomgold’s new friends are horrified by what he is now and what he was always meant to be and Glomgold leaves to go stalk scrooge once again. He indeed is Flintheart Glomgold and always will be.. because he threw the decent person he could’ve been away. He’s miserable.. because he can’t let go of his rage or ego and just move on from something that happened to him when he was ten! He has to be in his 60′s now! Glomgold may think Scrooge is his worst enemy.. but it’s really Flintheart Glomgold.... and it always will be.
So naturally his first actoin is to storm into his company and scream at scrooge. How he found him there... honestly not a huge suprise it’s his company and he likely knows how to find scrooge anywhere because he’s a creep like that. Scrooge and Owlson’s reactions are both worth a look at:
Tumblr media
Given Glomgold bursts into an already annoying meeting of Scrooge trying to get the dimes part knocked down to nickles (and likely lower before that given he mentioned Pennies earlier), to accuse Scrooge of trying to trick him by appearing as a boat in his dreams her bafflement is both understandable and hilarious. Like she probably HEARD what Glomgold was like but gennuinely didn’t belivie it and her face is just now frozen in a look of “oh my god they were not exagearating what fresh hell is this”.
She tries to be professional and introduce herself but he just brushes her off and yells at Scrooge blaming him for being forgotten (”You literally forgot yourself), with Owlson also considering calling security. She only dosen’t because Scrooge points out he’ll tire himself out eventually and as usual for their jousts, is not remotely threatened or worried. He’s just..sad. And getting back to his reaction.. that’s what’s telling about his plan. He probably KNEW this would happen. He in his heart knew Duke Balloney would be gone soon, and he’d have to deal with Glomgold again. It helps soften the implicatoins: it wouldn’t last and fraknly if it did Scrooge would probably have people check on him regualry to make sure he was okay. He’s not a monster.. he just wanted Flinty to be happy for five minutes and to not ruin that out of some misplaced sense of right and wrong.. when the right thing was to simply let the man be happy till it inevitably blew up.
Glomgold however, furious at being forgotten and cast aside has decided to take a huge poorly thought through gamble and challenges scrooge to a classic Scrooge comics trope between the two, but with higher stakes: A contest to see who will be the richest duck in the world by the end of the year.. and given Christmas happens right after this i’m just assuming he means a year from now. Winner gets both companies and fortunes. Scrooge scoffs at this.. till Flinty pulls out the clip, taunting him with how he did it and “If I can beat you once scrooge i’ll beat you again”. And this, Flinty revealing he stole from him and he NEVER KNEW it or realize it, enrages scrooge enough to agree and to take him seriously... meanwhile Owlson.. just tries to get actual work shit done and just forges their signatures. Look she is a woman of color in the business world with genuinely good motives... she’s probably used to using white nonsense to get things past two idiots having a peeing race.
Final Thoughts:
This episode is truly excellent and like Most Dangerous Game Night! i’d forgottne just HOW good it was. The pacing, the comedy, and the character work is all on full blast and i’ve gushed plenty enough about how great an origin story is. it’s a character piece that explains why this doofus is the way he is and that is what holds him back.
Next time on MMM: Louie’s back as he pulls a ghostbusters to make quick money and Storkules starts rooming with Donald with predictable results.

Why I love team JNPR
You know the usual. This is in my opinion. If you like it, reblog it or both that’s your choice. If you have questions, or want to add on to this then comment.  Read at your own time and will.
Ren and Nora compared to Yang: Yang had a mother. May not be by blood related but by relationship. Her mother died while she was young, but she still had her father and uncle to raise her. She had a social life in school, and she was trained by her father and uncle. Ren and Nora on the other hand, have no parents, only watched after each other and were trained by a bunch of strangers or by themselves. So unlike Yang, Ren and Nora would have a hard time relating to some people than Yang would.
Pyrrha compared to Weiss: Weiss was born and raised in a rich family. True, she was always cautious when it comes down to others using her for their own gain. But she takes her title way too seriously and it made her arrogant and cocky. Pyrrha doesn’t take her title too seriously, but she was overwhelmed by it. She hated how everyone only saw her as a tool or a weapon they can use for battle, and not as a person. She tries to welcome anyone into her life, but they always reject her, mainly feeling unworthy of her. Because of this Pyrrha felt truly more alone than Weiss. Unlike her, Pyrrha made her way to the top, she wasn’t born into it nor took the easy way to get there.
Jaune in comparison to Ruby and Blake: Jaune had nobody! Jaune had no uncle, no best friend, no teacher(sensei), NO SUPPORT to help him become a hunter. Jaune literally unlike Ruby is way out of his comfort zone. And unlike everyone he had no aura or training to help him. Jaune unlike Blake was treated, like a faunus, as a huge literal joke. This guy has literally had more reasons to be a villian than any of his teammates do. Plus, he has more things in common with the bad guys than he does with the heroes. He lost his partner and best friend due to the heroes, and Ozpin’s actions.
I liked team RWBY in volume 1-3, mostly because it made sense and was reviling each character’s problems and goals and was setting up the conflict of the story. But in volume three I started liking team JNPR more, because how they are not like the other teams. Everyone knows Pyrrha Nikkos, and believes without her, team JNPR is nothing more than failures. And you can’t blame them considering Jaune only became a leader because he was assigned to be one, and Ren and Nora were a bit too relaxed and into to each other to be leaders at all. And now with Pyrrha gone, they must prove that even without her, they can still be a great team. While defying the so-called “destiny” Cinder described as well.
In volume 4, we see Jaune does miss Pyrrha, and that he trains at night to her video message. He does feel sad that he lost her and that he couldn’t even express his feelings towards her as she did to him. And when he realized the truth, of course he was suspicious, his friend would have died either way by Amburn’s soul taking over or being a target for the rest of her life. Ren and Nora not only had to be there for each other still but now they had to be there for Jaune like Pyrrha did. (Even though they were completely horrible at it considering their flashback and action in volume four.)
In volume 5, (oh my gosh, this one is the reason I hate the show sometimes because of time constants) we learned the whole reason behind Jaune’s actions, which is revenge on Cinder. Team JNR were first to see Oscar before Ruby. Oscar was place under Jaune’s care do to the fact he was also a underdog (even though Oscar can just learn from muscle memory like Ozpin said) but Ruby takes that role for some reason and we are expected to take it. When the battle arrived, when Jaune had Cinder right in front of him, he did not hesitate to fight her. This backfired and one of his friends got hurt. He acknowledged that he missed up, that it was not suppose happen, and by doing so, he got his semblance. (Even when that makes no sense considering Cinder was after Ruby and Jaune’s secondary reason for coming along was keeping Ruby safe. At least I hope it was.)
In volume 6, could’ve better, Jaune made Oscar question himself even further, which is good. Because, one, Oscar is fourteen, and unlike Ruby he doesn’t have much of a clear idea on why he came along on the journey in first place other than Ozpin telling him to. When Jaune heard Oscar ran away, unlike Qrow, who punched him by the way, and don’t say it was for Ozpin because they share the same body, Qrow still hit a child, Jaune helped in the search and apologized to Oscar for his behavior. He gave Ruby an option when she couldn’t think of anything then she takes charge over it. Also, Ren and Nora admitted that they love Jaune and would not want to lose him just like Pyrrha. (Again, they were completely bad at that, considering they didn’t talk about that on the train, nor called Jaune out on his actions, completely ignoring him and etc. Really Jaune needs new friends.)
In volume 7, here’s the thing, Jaune had no reason to hate the General because he already worked things out with Qrow. How and when? We don’t know. But that shouldn’t mean he should flat out trust James with his life unlike Clover. Why you may ask, first, Qrow told him about the maiden powers. I mean, he wouldn’t leave out the people who knew about them like Ozpin, Good-witch and Ironwood, right? No. So Jaune has a reason not to trust James, not because of Pyrrha but Lionheart, the general’s actions so far and how the truth almost torn them apart mainly himself. Plus Jaune, and his team work more in Mantle, than RWBY, so they would have more run-in times with happy huntresses than team RWBY would on a regular basis. Then it’s how Mantle and Atlas situation is affecting their team with Ren and Nora butting heads over who’s right and who’s wrong, whether their ready to be hunters or not, and more importantly questioning their relationship and loyalty to not only each other but their friends. Image Ren, taking it too far where he could say something he’ll regret. Or by finding James to be right, he would sell out his friends believing it was the right thing to do. Image Nora having to choose between Ren or Jaune, which will be devasting more for Ren than Jaune because of how close they are to each other.
In volume 8, (Even though I highly doubt that team JNR will ever have a scene to themselves and now preview.) Jaune will feel bad because he not only lost the relic, he lost Oscar even though he’s alive. Now, how would this disturb him? Well, even though Nora would have to decide between him and Ren, in volume 4, there was a scene with Jaune going with Ruby and Nora going with Ren. It would feel obvious that she would follow Ren anywhere, even if it means leaving her friends behind. That could leave Jaune broken because he lost not only Pyrrha and Oscar but his teammates, making him the official Qrow and Raven of the group. This could cause Jaune to further out cast himself from everyone, trusting less in others and undoubtably make more horrible decisions than he already has before. That could also make him more of a target for the villains themselves. However, Jaune’s will to still protect the people and his friends will be the what keeps him sane and less brainwashed like Salem’s forces or the Ace Ops. (Or call team RWBY out on their mistakes.) But who can save him from a self-destructive path?
Many of you will say team RWBY might be able to help since their the main crew. Well, sadly, I disagree. Do to the fact that none of them tried to talk to Jaune after the Cinder and Ozpin incident. And there are multiple characters who have gone through a similar process or are wiser, than the main cast. The only ones who I feel can make an impact on him are maybe Maria and Penny. Penny may be android, but she seems more human than the RWBY girls put together. She is kind, friendly and mostly very supportive towards her allies. Maria may not have had many friends or levels of companionship as others, but she does know about how it feels to be powerless and scared of what’s to come. Maria would basically remind Jaune that being afraid and sorry for himself isn’t going to make things better. Penny would try to keep his sanity alive until he could once again maintain it on his own. However, the final person who I believe can help him is Qrow or even Oscar (Ozpin). Qrow would just remind Jaune on how far he has come, and for him to understand that nothing will play out as he planned. He would even tell him more about his team, mainly Raven and himself and how their decisions affected their family. Same goes for Oscar (Ozpin) but telling him how many mistakes he has made during his lifetime. He might even tell Jaune he knew about his fake transcripts, just didn’t care much about it if Jaune was willing to work and improve.
I know many people love team RWBY due to them being an all-female cast or for other reasons I cannot explain. But sometimes, there are situations that they cannot relate to. And even if there was, team RWBY does nothing to resolve it. For example, Jaune was sad about Pyrrha and trains under her videos. He wanted revenge on Cinder and Weiss almost died for it. And though he was asking appropriate questions, he went about it the wrong way, causing Oscar to feel unwanted and run away. Yet, none of his friends, bothered to either call him out on it, nor done anything to cheer him up or reason with him. Ruby who literally saw Jaune committing every one of those transaction, and has a dead relative, said nothing. Yang who lost both her moms, whose uncle was a constant drunk and had to take care of Ruby while her worthless dad is busy, said nothing. Weiss who has a somewhat of a dysfunctional family, said nothing.  Blake who is supposed to be an escape victim of a one-sided relationship, who seen how friends change or show their true colors with time, and literally seen more death than her team members and blames it on herself, said, nothing. Basically, Jaune overcame some of his problems on his own along with the help of the Red-Haired Women (and she barely mattered). And even though Ren and Nora talked to him, he already had reinsurances he needed to move forward. The point I’m trying to make is the reason I like team JNPR is that they are more real than team RWBY. They have weakness, they have arguments, nothing goes their way and when something bad happens they face the consequences.
That is why I love JNPR better than RWBY. Jaune, he was just a normal person until he made a chose to leave his old life behind for something greater, only to have his character taken by Ruby and Oscar, who just ruins it, and to never improve. And we still know nothing about him. Pyrrha who should just stayed alive because no one has learned from her death. Ren and Nora are just to be a better ship than Bumblebee. I hope these characters get better, but I highly doubt it.

Tangled Salt Marathon - The Brothers Hook
Tumblr media
It’s time to say goodbye to Hook Foot. He won’t be missed.
Summary:  Rapunzel takes everyone to see Hook Hand in concert. However, this brings back bad memories in Hook Foot, as he was always overshadowed and looked down on by his elder brother. Hook Hand is revealed to be employed by the self-centered King Trevor who wants Hook Hand to play at the ceremony of the marriage between the Seal of Equis and his female mate. When Hook Foot sabotages his brother’s performance at the wedding he must face King Trevor in a dance off to save Hook hand’s career.
The Episode Placement Is Indeed Wrong
Tumblr media
I talked about this last episode, but the ordering of episodes is confusing.
The Brother’s Hook does come after Rapunzel: Day One in terms of production order and is placed after it on the Disney Plus, but it supposedly aired before Rapunzel: Day One originally and the events make more sense in that aired order. As they’re traveling on foot here because they lost the caravan, and they’re all stressed out and fighting in the first scene of this episode. Also it world explain Hook Foot’s absence in Rapunzel Day One.
Yet why would they order things that way? Why hold off on resolving the Raps and Cass argument if you’re not going to even hint at it here? Why not place this earlier in the season so that you wouldn’t be dragging Hook Foot along in the Great Tree for no reason?
It just goes to show how rushed and poorly planned out season two actually was.
This is Another Pointless Parallel
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So Hook Foot is suppose to represent Cassandra here and Hook Hand is supposed to be Rapunzel in this scenario but like that doesn’t work for several reasons.
For one, Rapunzel never discouraged Cassandra’s dreams. Cassandra herself just never opened up to tell her what those dreams were, and indeed even the audience don’t know what Cass’s dreams are now that she’s already achieved her goal of becoming a guard back in the first season. I don’t think even Cassandra knows what she wants.
Second, Rapunzel and Cassandra’s conflict isn’t actually about ‘dreams’, it’s about control. Each wants to control the other, to be in charge, because they think themselves always right. Both equate ‘being right’ and a lack of criticism as validation and to them, and this show in general, validation is equated with ‘love and compassion’ and is the ultimate end all and be all goal for everyone. Even though that’s not how validation works and a it’s a very unhealthy mindset to promote.
Third, no one owes you anything. Yeah, Hook Hand is a jerk here, but at the end of the day giving up on his dreams was Hook Foot’s choice. You are in charge of your own choices, and at some point you need to decide if you’re going to listen to rest of the world telling you no or have some self respect and do what you want because you want it. You don’t actually need anyone’s approval but your own. By making ‘validation’ the end all and be all of the narrative, it undermines characters agency and fails to teach people about self respect and accountability.
Same goes for Cassandra, even more so in fact. She needs to be the one to get off her ass and try for what she wants. No one is going to hand it to her and Raps doesn’t owe her a damn thing. Cassandra is the only thing getting the way of Cassandra because time and time again the series gives her chances that she refuses to take for ill defined reasons. There’s nothing at stake for her to lose if she just left.
Last off, no one learns anything from this. Cass gets nothing out of it despite being right there the whole time, and Rapunzel is too hypocritical and self centred to see that she is very bit the bully same as Hook Hand. Not because she crushes Cassandra’s dreams like the narrative wants you to think, but because she tries to insert herself and her views on to everyone.
Bullshit
Tumblr media
Once again, may I remind you that there is over twenty villians in this show and only four of them get redemptions. Four! And one of those four was Eugene’s doing not Rapunzel’s.
The narrative does not support the ideas that it wants to push. If you want me to believe that Rapunzel does sincerely believe in second chances then you need to show her giving that chance to everybody equally. And no, not everyone has to take it, not everyone needs to be redeemed, but she needs to at least try. Especially if they’re a recurring baddie with a tragic backstory like Lady Caine’s.
Oh, and may I also remind you that currently a 15 year old orphan is rotting away in a jail cell because of the corrupt government and Rapunzel does not give a crap!
The Song Is Sounds Good But It Adds Nothing
Tumblr media
It doesn’t add anything to the overall narrative and it fails to add anything to the episode itself because it gives us no new information.
This is extremely wasteful. Not only because Alan Menken and Glenn Slater are highly respected artists who are wasting their talents on crap like this, but also for pure budgetary reasons. Tangled has a limited budget for songs that is worked into the contract. Each season is suppose to get eight original songs and two reprises. (tho season three trades out one of those songs for an extra reprise)
In an arc heavy series like this, with such a limited number of songs to convey information, then you need to choose where those songs go wisely. The writers did not choose wisely in this instance.
Rapunzel You Are Not In A Position To Give Advice Here
Tumblr media
This episode is foreshadowing for what season three would become. Which is a complete formula switch up that undermines the narrative’s goals.
This is suppose to be a coming of age tale. That’s in its mission statement. It’s what the writers supposedly wanted to achieve according to interviews and the very pilot episode itself.
That requires Rapunzel learning and growing. She can’t be in the mentor role. She can’t be the one to give out sage advice if she is the one who is meant to grow the most. She not there yet. She’s not experienced enough to fulfill that place in the narrative.
Season one may have been repetitive in it’s lessons but it at least tried to show Rapunzel owning up to mistakes and changing as a person, but here and in season three they toss that out the window and have Rapunzel teaching other people lessons instead. People who ultimately don’t matter to the overall narrative.
Instead of showing her growing as a person and coming to fit in that role over time due to experience, it has the opposite effect of showing Rapunzel as being patronizing, selfish, and unworthy to rule. Because she has no grounds for having an opinion, no basis for her advice to go off of, no experience to back up what she says, and zero claims for being in charge except for being born in a classist feudal system.
Had the narrative actually bothered to call out  this instead of just having Cass pitch a hissy fit over nothing, then we could have gotten a really complex character and unique moral to the show, but that’s not what actually happens.
King Trevor Is the Saving Grace of This Episode
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don’t think the writers realize that Trevor isn’t the hateable douche that they believe him to be.
Oh sure he’s not nice, he’s essentially the equivalent of an annoying ‘I want to speak to the manager!’ type customer. But there is a huge, huge difference between being a Karen and being a fascist dictator. One’s irritating and the other is actively malicious and a danger to people's lives.
Frederic might be outwardly more pleasant but he’s still a person who abuses his power in order to harm poor people. Trevor is just a mother-of-bridezilla here and a perfectionist. Like big deal.
And to be honest Rapunzel isn’t that much better.
Tumblr media
Like you are a bully Raps. You’re every bit a pushy and demanding as Trevor is, particularly in season three.
While she’s not actively malicious like Frederic, she’s still a danger to people because she refuses to acknowledge that the power she wields has an impact on others lives and that that impact can indeed be negative.
There’s something called the banality of evil. That being simply mean to others isn’t how true evil spreads. It’s people refusing to challenge the system, and if you are a part of that system then you are a part of the evil it spreads no matter how nice you are outwardly.
Rapunzel and the show at large, does not understand the difference between being nice and being kind. It introduces the concept of flawed government and systems but then does nothing to actually challenge it. It forgoes the actual work it takes to make change happen by focusing on easy outs and proformative progressivism.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trevor does more than either Frederic or Rapunzel here with this one line alone than they do in three full seasons.
Eugene did indeed commit a violent crime, no matter how much the show tried to present such a crime as ‘funny’. Trevor is in his legal rights to prosecute the person who tried to kidnap his child/pet and assaulted his personage.
Yet he’s actually granting mercy here. More than that, he’s inviting them to his child’s/pet’s wedding. He’s offering friendship when he could have had them killed. Because Tevor, for all his faults, recognizes the power the that he wields and then makes the conscious decision not to abuse that power.
Moreover over he acknowledges the difference between what is a personal offense and not a an attack on his kingdom as a whole. What Eugene and Frederic did could have been considered an act of war and Trevor never even considered that an option.
It’s sign of bad writing when the person we’re supposed to consider a jerk and a recurring antagonist is more compassionate than the main heroine herself. Even as he jeers and makes an arse of himself.
This is the Point Where Rapunzel’s Characterization Buckles and Breaks
Tumblr media
At first glance this seems like growth. She’s now assertive and taking charge, and Hook Hand did indeed had this coming, but in context of the greater narrative and how Rapunzel’s character develops past this episode, this is the point where the wheels start to come off.
Rapunzel is a hypocrite. We’ve established this as a fundamental part of her characterization back in season one and it’s the driving force behind all of the main conflicts with her in the first two seasons. But before now, her hypocrisy at least had consequences. It caused enough problems that if you were paying attention you could see it for the flaw that it was.
But here her hypocrisy is presented as being right. She looks over Hook Hand even as she tells him not to look down on others. She dictates to him how his relationship with his own brother should go, when she has zero context for said relationship. She’s heard only one side of the story and only a piece of it. She doesn’t know what actually went down between them while they were growing up nor does she honestly care why Hook Hand does what he does. Even as she asks him why.
Yet she is rewarded for this behavior. She’s never called out as wrong. The narrative bends over backwards to accommodate her and reinforces her views. Without direct consequences a character’s flaws are rendered meaningless, and so the character will only frustrate the audience rather than endear themselves to us.
That is the opposite of what you want to achieve in a story. You want to the audience to like you’re main characters, or at least find them entertaining in their awfulness. Making them right all of the time, even when they’re wrong sabotages this goal.
Trevor’s Still the Better Person Here
Tumblr media
Like it may not have been Hook Hands fault, but at the end of the day he did screw up at his job and a paying customer has the right to be upset and refuse to work with you again or even demand their money back. That’s what being self-employed means. It’s part of the risk you take as being a contractor.
Trevor’s not being unreasonable here just because he raised his voice and wants Hook Hand to leave the wedding premises. Yeah the insults are uncalled for, I’ll give you, but remember that Frederic locked a tailor in a stockade for accidently ripping a robe; that he has the ability to fix if he wasn’t locked up.
Tumblr media
And he resolves conflicts and personal insults with a dance off!
Tumblr media
What happened when someone called Frederic out for being a poor leader and endangering lives, oh yeah they wound up in jail!
Also This Episode’s Big Climax is a Fucking Dance Off
Tumblr media
Out of all the low stakes conflicts in this show this is the lowest.
And it’s coming right off The Great Tree and the big Cassandra vs Rapunzel fight. This shouldn’t be here. It’s throws off the pacing the tone.
Well I Guess Trevor Kept HIs Word, Which Is More Than What Frederic Would Do
Tumblr media
Like Trevor is defeated and he does indeed complain about losing, but everyone is apparently free to leave afterwards and Hook Hand still has a career so I guess Trevor kept his side of the bargain. Even though he has no reason to and no one to hold him to account for it. He just has a code of honor I guess.
Meanwhile, Frederic throws a teenager in a dungeon after promising to help him and completely ignores his supposed friend Quirin being encased in amber.
Tumblr media
So What Was the Point In Bringing Hook Foot Along Again?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What did Hook Foot add? What did he bring to the story that no other character out there could bring? What does writing him out of the story now achieve, and why couldn’t he have been left out of the narrative all together?
If your answer to all of those question is ‘Nothing!’, then congratulations you have more sense than the showrunners.
I have seen a few people get angry and suggest that Lance should have been the one to go because getting rid of Hook Foot meant getting rid of the shows main disabled rep, but that’s ignoring that getting rid of Lance would mean getting rid of the shows only real black representation as well. Because tokenism isn’t real representation.
Yet for all of how poorly handled Lance’s character was, he still has more reason to be there than Hook Foot. He has a unique connection to one of the main characters that, once introduced, would be hard to ignore. There’s nothing connecting Hook Foot to the plot or the main characters, and that’s why he shouldn’t have been in the show at all. Regardless of how much you may have liked him.
Destiny Isn’t a Goal!!!
Tumblr media
How many times do I have to say this!?
A goal needs to be specific. It needs to have logical motivation behind it. It needs a clear obstacle to be overcome for the character to achieve it.
A vague ‘destiny’ has none of those things.
Conclusion
Meh. That’s the word that best describes this episode and the majority of season two. It’s not the worst thing ever if you just want to shut your brain off for 30 minutes, but it’s not actually good either, and if you stop to think about any of it for more than two seconds it falls apart.

This is just my opinion and as canon progresses I may be proved wrong (current chapter 288), but here goes.
▪︎
Hawks is a victim.
But Hawks is wrong.
Very deeply wrong.
But even so he will still be lauded for his actions.
▪︎
Hawks is very clearly a victim. He was only about four when the Comission bought fostered him, and from that very tender and impressionable age, he has been raised to believe one thing, that the world is wrong and needs fixing and if he has to die, or live with a bloody aching conscience because of the actions he's taken, then that's what he must do. He has been given a gift, how selfish and dirty of him to keep it to himself and not use his beautiful, powerful wings in the aid of others.
This is his purpose in living, after all.
So with this way of thinking, of belief, at forefront if his life, he makes his way to the top.
How much agency he's actually had over his own self, even the bare basics of presentation and personality, is debatable, but it isn't much.
Not only does he not get to keep his own name (something that is very important for your sense of self), but the name he does gets, he doesn't even get to choose.
He is told who, and what he is from the very start of the time when would he be beginning to understand and form an individual idea of himself.
I don't think he knows who he is at all, and that's what driving his decisions. He's caught in a fear driven blacked out spiral.
For all intents and purposes, Takami Keigo, is dead.
(Though he might be starting to wake up thanks to Dabi. And I don't mean that in a "true love's kiss" kinda way. Dabi stomped his head, burned his wings off, and called him by a name he probably hasn't heard in years. That's got to awaken something.)
▪︎
But for all this, all the sympathy and relatability and compassion I have for him, he is wrong.
There comes a point in every person's life when, no matter what horrible, evil thing has been done to them, they need to be held responsible for their own choices and actions. And Hawks is at that point I think.
Killing Twice, was wrong.
Killing Best Jeanist, was wrong.
I still believe he actually killed Jeanist. It doesn't make sense for it to actually be a fake. In trying to win the trust of the League, Hawks killed one, and in trying to prove his loyalty to the Comission, he killed the other.
The end justifying his means. (So he hopes or believes).
He has stated that he was willing to take all the ugly awful things onto his own back if it meant that heroes as a whole could rest, and that's just what he has done.
But I think that when this arc with Shigaraki is done, whatever the outcome, (by the older heroes at least) Hawks will be hailed as, well, a hero.
He killed Twice, a villian. A villian with duplication powers. Can you imagine what would happen if he were able to copy Shigaraki, or Gigantomachia? Thank goodness he was able to nullify that potential threat, right? And he took a massive injury too.
He will be respected.
But the Commission (if still in power) will still have him. (And if there's no Comission, what will become of him? He will founder even worse than before, cut loose and directionless.)
I think the Commission (again, if still in power) will pin Best Jeanist's death on someone else, they have a plethora of scapegoats to choose from, and prop up Hawks as someone who stood on the edge of villainy to protect society, to protect you, and who suffered greatly for it. But in the end he was validated and victorious.
It's a frickin' great propaganda piece.
Reestablishing their hold and position, while simultaneously beating down any dissent or sympathy towards the League. Because, "Look what they did to one who saved you, look what they've done to this one you love."
Though I think in secret they will punish him. Their little puppet went off and thought he was a real boy. He needs to remember that he doesn't belong to himself.
Hawks is a grey character.
Trying to make him fully evil and uncaring, or pure and blameless, is a disservice to the work Horikoshi has put into him.
Horikoshi's world starts out as seeming very simplistic and basic. The heroes are very good, and the villains are very evil.
But it quickly expands to be more than that, more complicated, and with more outlying factors than are first shown. (Probably because of how Jump does their series', but he gets quickly to the point.)
And Hawks is meant to illustrate that for us, the twisted duality of their society and reasons behind the choices they make, whether good, bad, or an undefinable middle.
Anyway, Hawks is very clearly a victim on multiple sides, but has also made his own independent choices (regardless of what motivated them) and they are indefensible.
Also his conscience is not entirely dead, though he's tried to dampen it, and whether or not he's formally held accountable for what he's done, he will not ever be free again, I think.
He had a chance for fellowship and freedom, and in his fear, fear of the unknown the "villians", and fear of losing the Commission's approval of him, he killed it.
The Comission certainly won't let him go again and the League will kill him on sight so he has nowhere to turn.
And even if the Commission and subsequent society is destroyed, his guilt will still haunt him.
He is absolutely wrong. But I still like him, and I wish things would have turned out differently.
Hawks is, in all parts, a tragedy.

Charmed 02x08 Review SPOILERS!!!!
Sorry this took so long y'all. Family stuff just blew up in my face this month has been just terrible it's been terrible since the end of november to be honest, so I just wasnt in the mood to review. But I shall starts. In general i liked the episode 8/10 for me. I like the pacing, the general plot advancing. I liked it, but I have some complaints though. So let's just get those out of the way. So I'll do pros and cons by subject since there were things I both disliked and liked about each thing.
1. Hacy
Let's just get this big guy out of the way. So abby and Harry kiss was a big no for me, although it was hot for sure.
Now there has been a lot of back and forth about this so I actually wanted to compare to the things that bugged me about Macyx galvin and where I thought one does better than the other.
Communication
So like Harry and Macy do not communicate well with each other right now. I feel that thier communication issues though are better (or at least make more sense to me) than Macy x Galvin.
Macy while communicating with Galvin, as far as arranging things, was bad, but with her kiss on halloween she did make her interest in Galvin known. They both had an understanding that they were interested. So I thought the whole Summer ordeal was worse in that sense because, while the follow through was poorly done, Macy's interest was stated.
With Harry and Macy, it appears that neither of them have stated any interest to one another (neither has told the other thier feelings) and neither is aware. So harry kissing some one else isnt as bad to me as the Galvin x Summer situation because of that (speaking about this area soley).
The passive aggressiveness of Harry and Galvin in certain situation isnt comparable because Harry is doing it more.I felt Harry's reactions are more justified (we will get to the hypocritical portion later) in that he is going through the wringer, is hurting and confused, and self-deprecating and many of us agreed that the thought of Macy preferring Jimmy would be bad and hurtful to Harry and logically make no sense. But harry has more scenes than Galvin did in season one so he feel more passive aggressive than Galvin, but I attribute that to screen time and proximity to the Macy (he always there so more time and chances to interact). But also, for me, Galvin wasnt as passive agressive and his sometimes aggressive or snideness wasnt because of Macy. Outside stuff (problems with summer) would make him snap or his trauma also caused him to snap so the situations are comparable there but, again Harry has more screen time so his snapping feels worse to me because it happens multiple time in one episode versus one or twice in a whole season. Since the situation ( and right now I am speaking soley on the summer x Galvin situation) was different. I am up in the air I as to which was "worse" i think both situations are sucky and i think i am more bothered by Galvin x Summer because again Macy had actually expressed her interest (communication wise) but the hacy situation feels more full of that passive aggressiveness and that will turn it into something I really cant get behind. Right now I feel Harry is in a bad place and probably shouldnt be with anyone until he get himself settled personally.
Love triangle/square or whatever
So like with summer x Galvin it wasnt really a love triangle I mean kind of but not really. Galvin didnt pursue Macy while with summer and was generally nice during that time. Summer wasnt necessarily the jealous girlfriend stereotype she was nice, but did call out suspect behavior.
The abby xharryx Macy x jimmy thing is like aweful. It is the love triangle that I hate most at least where the abbyxharryxmacy part is concerned.
I mentioned it before but I hate when one or two people use another person as a means of getting release/relief when they are actually interested in someone else. I think it is cruel to both the used character and the main LI. Worse when both are using others because twice the cruelty. IDK what was going on in Harry's head. But I have never like that type of love triangle, and worse so because it is possibly the other type of triangle I hate which is (usually guy) caught between two ladies and one is clearly the villian (I thank novelas for this gem *sarcasm*) and it is mostly a lust thing.
Especially given that James Westwell was a serial cheater, apparently, this idea of "I love one person but am in lust with the other despite thier character" is like the worst to me. Abby is straight up an ambitious murder, and like I guess that maybe Harry's default type because Charity had similar qualities, but again for a guy who supposedly has strong feelings for Macy and was so confused and hurt by her attraction to Jimmy (which apparently wasnt attraction at all) the ease of him doing the very thing he was mad about , and the ease of being able to push aside his feeling for Macy and give in to that abby kiss was gross.
Sorry but although they werent together, for me, guys who can do that easily should be on our cheater radar. Knowing that James was a serial cheater just makes it worse imo.
While the summer x Galvin situation felt worse on the communication front (expressed feelings) it was better done than here because there is a lot more grossness in the dynamics of the love shape thing right now.
Overall, I get Harry isnt in a place to be with anyone and it's all confusing and he is lashing out. He has not told Macy his interest and neither has she so he shouldnt be held to the boyfriend standards. But still the writers are toeing the line here. What happens next will actually help me define whether this turns into a Galvin situation where I end up not liking the two characters together. If Harry tries to continue the passive aggressiveness about Macy and Jimmy. I'll be done. I mean if he does have feelings for abby and trying to move on, but still tries to pull that with Macy it will just be straight up manipulative. Right now I am like okay he was lashing out and I get it and the abby kiss is probably a big mistake. He can continue the mistake path if the writers wasnt to go there, but if he doesnt recognize that he did something hypocritical and still comes for Macy about Jimmy it will be very very wrong.
I think they for sure need to clear the air but if the writers wait to long or do too much damage I wont be satisfied with the clearing of the air.
I am not necessarily mad right now over the abbyx Harry thing because I am waiting to see how they will handle and present it, but I mean it is on that line and writers need to watch out. I dont think Harry was trying to be manipulative and the lashing out happened before abby kiss. As long as the lashing out (at Macy) doesnt continue I will watch and support the development and exploration of thier relationship and dynamic with the others.
2. Maggie
So like Maggie shows her naivety here and I am not that mad. Like she isn't pulling a "I am so in love and blind to the world" thing she makes her decision based on what she thinks will do the most good for the most people. It is still naive, but she is still maturing and you can see that. Her wanting her sisters to trust her judgment and not feel like they have to baby her is reasonable although again those insecurities clouded the main issues here. She is growing and I shall see how she continues to mature.
3. Mel
I think they tried to fit some personal development for mel here and it both worked and didnt work. I thought it wasnt done badly but at some points I was like....okay could this have been saved for another episode or done beforehand. I wanted to see it, just didn't think it felt in place, especially after leaving the wedding. She just had some development and then was like welp guess I am gonna stumble upon this amber. Like mel could have gotten her new powers before, I mean I felt they could have made the stumble upon the amber scene and new powers at any point before and it could have been more relevant and interesting placed somewhere else than this episode.
4. Abby/overlord/parker storyline
Abby was probably the best thing in this episode. I love her as a villian. I am here for it and I want it.
Parker got dark real quick and while I think he and Maggie shouldnt be together, I am glad he didnt die. Also glad abby clarified that his actions weren't caused by the apple. Because at least OG with Cole the tragedy (the first storyline) was that he made a choice to protect the person he loved but he ended up becoming the source and actually being taken over by the source so his actions were tinted by his OG love but corrupted by that force that possessed him. Where as abby tells him, that that jealousy and want for blood was all him. Maybe the apple and that power made him more likely to act on it than of he hadnt, but it wasnt the apples fault necessarily so. I am glad for the clarification, makes me not want Maggie and him together, but I like that exploration of power and choice. Even with Macy while the power amplified those insecurities she still was making choice which also made her choice to give up that power extra meaningful. Power is corrupting but you can still choose to fight that corruption or give in to it. I like that.
5. Jordan
I love this character to be honest. I am still figuring him out, but like dude is cursed and has been basically touched, punched, and robbed by these guys. He can't catch a break and like nobody even checks on him. Like he so far is a pretty decent although suspicious (like he doesnt trust others easily not like he himself is suspect) guy and I like him but he is getting some serious Darryl treatment right now. I dont like that, but I like him and want to see more of him. Plus, what the heck happened? Did they leave him passed out in the gym? Did they wipe his memory? What is going on?

Lisa’s big long post
OK
HERE’S THAT THING I WAS TALKING ABOUT
LISA’S ADVENTURES POST OBTAINING GOD HOOD
LONG POST READ MORE TIME
OK
Enough with the caps lock
SO!
When last Lisa’s story had left off on the internet, at least to my memory...
She’s happily married to Edward and Winry from the FullMetal Alchemist universe, and they have a gaggle of five kids between the three of them that they adore dearly. Lillian is no longer a villian, but more of a “bad influence” aunt type and chaotic good instead of just straight chaotic Evil. God hood was obtained through a ritualistic battle with her Boss where he, of course,  didn’t explain anything before kidnapping everyone she knew and forced her to fight him. I may go further into that another time if anyone’s interested but that’s not the focus for this post.
So, all that has happened, Lisa’s reached the end of her own journey and she’s offically the newest God of the Multiverse: The God Of Inter Dimensional Travel. Where on Earth could I go with her now that she’s reached this conclusion to her Demi-God hood and can no longer be forced into any universe and can travel between dimensions she wants?
Lisa Green is getting apprentices.
Now, she’ knows a lot of people and most of them are well known heroes: Goku, Sonic, Yugi, etc etc. But she knows them well enough to know unleashing someone like Goku loose on the multiverse means trouble. I mean, he’s gonna throw hands with every person who looks like they vaguely know how to make a fist.
So she looks for people like a younger her. The pure hearted, goody-goodies, who want to help others and maybe they’ve got some problems, but over all just want to do good for the sake of doing good and not cause ‘it’s your job’ or other such bs.
So she takes on a total of four apprentices from worlds she visited during all her travels.
And yeah, there’s a ... a few she visited after gaining God hood and some I just never addressed before.......
Don’t worry about it.
She sends out an invitation out to each of her candidates and awaits their arrival on the Island.
Steven Quartz Universe is the first to arrive, eager to see Lisa and find out what this is all about. A big hug cause look how damn grown up he’s gotten, she’s so proud of him!!
Marinette Dupain-Cheng arrives next, barely keeping from tripping on the portal’s edge by Jim Lake Jr’s appearing in time to catch her. Lisa’s quick to pull them both into a big sweeping hug and thanking them all for actually showing up.
Yugo’s the only one to immediately surprise our Goddess, opening a portal above her and dropping into her arms with a laugh. She, of course, gets him back for it with a big hug.
With her four candidates present, Lisa explains her reasons at last. The kids all have a choice of course. She’s not gonna force them the way she was. They already have so much to worry about in their respective home universe’s and she’s only offering them this cause she believes they’re the only ones who could follow in her footsteps, do her job better.
Knowing these characters the way that I do, I believe they’d all accept. They know Lisa, they know she’s genuine and she’s something of a big sister character to each of them. My sister and I went about on the subject and I can’t think they wouldn’t.
She brings them to her Boss and presents the four as her new prodigies. There’s a ritual where he copies powers from Lisa to give to the kids, including the ability to shape shift the way Lisa does, travel into the void and into worlds the way Lisa could during her Demi God days. No “summoning things with a snap” due to each of them already having something all their own before hand.
From there I’m kicking around some ideas for what world Lisa takes the four to for their real mission but I know about the dynamics the group is going to have.
Lisa’s the obvious one, she’s in charge but does the “I’m-going-to-only-offer-advice-and-only-step-in-if-I-legit-fear-for-your-safety” bit, which she sucks at cause she’s got that mom instinct to protect the kids as much as possible. Super Mom, gives great hugs and considers the whole crew members of her family, the usual for Lisa.
Steven is the team’s go-to healer, obviously, and defensive tank. He’s a mediator when things get heated (as few times as that happens with all these peace-keeper types) and is always the one to try and be there for the others to vent to. It takes all of the team to get Steven to vent but once he does, he gets comfortable enough to go to them when things in his home world get to be too much.
Marinette is also a defense type fighter but is also one of the first to jump into a fight. She’s the team little sister and she’s the one who needs the others to step up for her during confrontations. If something gets heated, she’s usually part of whatever’s going on.
Jim is the main fighter of the crew and the defunct leader. Despite every member of the crew being the leader in their respective worlds, Jim’s the one who naturally takes up the role best and tries to keep everyone’s needs in mind. He tries to take up Lisa’s job from her cover in his world and play guidance counselor but he’s usually better at comforting the others instead of working out all their problems right out.
Yugo, despite being the oldest of the four at 20+ years old, is still the baby. He’s the heaviest hitter with his lasers and Wakfu sword and shield combo, combined with the fact he’s an reincarnated God-King of his own caliber. Yugo’s the one the kids forget is about as mature as Lisa, but he’s still the one to get them out a pickle with his portals. The one the others rely on to make sure their emergency landings end without a splat.
There’s a few things regarding their first outing as a team will have, but I’m still foggy on details:
They’re getting separated. Whether just from Lisa or into groups of two on top of it is up to the which world they wind up in.
Marinette is gonna deal with some shit. Her world’s too... goodie goodie. People don’t really get hurt in her world the way they do in the boys’ so the big “objective” for the kids is Marinette understanding how much higher the stakes are in other worlds, possibly even seriosuly injuring (or even killing) some monster or attacker in defense of her friends or herself.
But it’s all up in the air. I may start writing one shots of the adventures of “The New Heroes of The Multiverse” depending on how well this receives or at the least, how my brain chooses to work from here on.

Survivor Gabon
Survivor is infamous for promoting conniving and treacherous players, but I was happy to see the final four players all be decent to each other. No players get through the game without some lies or scheming, but none of the cruelest players made it to the top. The jury was still bitter, but most of the jury members were sour and miserable people before they were voted off.
BEST MOMENT: Marcus Lehman threw an immunity idol into the ocean. His alliance was so confident they were safe that they didn’t need it, they just wanted to get it out of the game. Minutes later, they found out they weren’t merging and Marcus was voted out.
WORST MOMENT: Corinne Kaplan made an embarassingly mean and hurtful attack on Sugar for being a leach on society and implying her tears over her father’s passing were fake.
BEST CHALLENGE: Kota dominated Fang in most challenges, but there was a water lacrosse game where Marcus weaved through all of Fang with ease and tossed it over to Randy for an easy score three times in a row. Fang barely tried and it showed.
THE MOMENT THE GAME CHANGED: There were two major momentum swings. The first and most impactful was when tribes walked away from the merge feast in two new, shuffled tribes. Kotas carefully crafted strategy was washed away as the king of Kota, Marcus, was voted out when Susie flopped back to the original Fang tribe members.
BEST SURVIVALIST: Bob Crowley worked every moment he wasn’t sleeping. He rebuilt huts, built benches, made multiple fake immunity idols. The jungle was like a hardware store for this guy.
WORST SURVIVALIST: GC asked his team to vote him off because he couldn’t handle it. He was always eating more than his tribe had to eat. He almost missed a challenge because he was off in a canoe searching for food.
FAVORITE PLAYER: Bob Crowley was the oldest guy in the game and the quirkiest. Despite his age, he won the most individual immunity challenges. He bow-tied his buffs around his neck and was the father figure for his younger tribe members.
LEAST FAVORITE PLAYER: Randy Bailey was nasty, bitter, and cruel, but most of all he was pitiful. He had no friends in the game, and sadly no friends at home either.
BEST STRATEGIST: Sugar Kiper played the dumb blond and hid behind a dominant and irritating man. She let Ace be the target and think he was controlling her and then blindsided him once she was in a strong position. She never had a larger alliance which turned out to be serendipitous in a season where twists turned alliances into liabilities. She also found the idol and used it perfectly at several turns. Her fatal error occured when she chose to save the “good people” and vote out less likable players because she would rather lose to a nice person than give bullies a chance at the million.
WORST STRATEGIST: Gillian Larson started the game with a school yard pick selecting weak players first which allowed Kota to stack the deck in their favor which led to their challenge domination.
BIGGEST TAGALONG: Matty Whitmore was the nicest guy there and a good competitor, but he was too nice to make move, so he followed along with his tribe mates at every council. He made it to the top four but only by Sugar employing her idol to save him.
PLAYER WHO DESERVED TO GO FURTHER: Jacquie Berg showed strength in the social, strategic, and physical aspects of the game. After being the only new Fang member to really try in the water lacrosse game, they quickly voted her out in favor of Kelly who was weaker in every aspect of the game.
PLAYER WHO THOUGHT THEY CONTROLLED THE GAME (BUT DIDN’T): Crystal Cox should have been a dominant force in challenges, but she did well in just and was an embarassment in most of the rest. Strategicly she followed along with Kenny’s strategy.
BIGGEST GAMER: Marcus didn’t get a chance to do any individual challenges, but he owned at almost all the team challenges except the final one after which he was eventually eliminated.
PLAYER WHO SHOULD HAVE WON BUT DIDN”T: Sugar played a skilled strategy and social game. Bob rocked the challenges, but didn’t play much of a rounded game. The jury was more concerned about being bitter than choosing the best player. She controlled the game generally and was the decisive actor in almost all the important moves.
ACTUAL WINNER: Bob was a fun person to watch and I felt good about him winning. His biggest error was needlessly promising to give Ken his individual immunity necklace.
WHAT THIS SEASON DID WRONG: They casted some pitiful players. It is normal for survivor to seek out some villian types, but Randy and Corinne were plain mean. The game requires some backstabbing, but these two were miserably hateful. It wasn’t something they did out of stress or strategy, they boasted how it was part of their personality and character.
WHAT THIS SEASON DID RIGHT: The tribe mix ups were entertaining. The first shuffle took place after each tribe ranking their members allowing the schoolyard pick to be informed of the opposing tribe’s heirarchy. The second transfer was almost a blindside in itself. Faking out the surivivors at the false merge feast was a great twist to pull the floor out from under the players and destabilize a seemingly indestructable alliance.

Season 1 Analysis
STANDARD DISCLAIMER: I am going to be applying the concept of criticism to a TV show you presumably love and adore as much as I do. If you do not want your idea that the show is immaculate to be challanged, I would not advise reading past this point.
Tumblr media
Mood for this season: Logic? Nahh...
I'm taking three film classes right now, I only rip it apart because I love it! (Sry, if I seem a little overly critical at times)
So, let's start with some background (you get to learn about me, yay! This is what you came here for. Right?). When the original series (seasons 1 and 2) came out in 2012, my little brother, at the age of six, was THE target audience for lego ninjas that you could battle and spin really really fast. I... am five years older than him. He collected sets, and he even bought me a spinner pack with the "girl character", the "blue one", and one of the skeletons so that I could play with him. To this day they are the only legos I own, but they sit in an altoids tin in my night stand. It was right before our family moved to Germany (we're a military family btw) that our parents purchased the disk episodes of seasons one and two. When you live in Europe, you tend to want to do a LOT of traveling. Every weekend, I kid you not, we went to another country. Which means road trips. And road trips mean movies. I would always let my brother choose what we watched, because he was the one who would get fussy and upset, so we watched a lot of Kung Fu Panda, and Madagascar, and a LOT of Cars (as in plural movies. I quote Cars 2, regularly), but the thing we watched most often was those niniago DVDs. Because you could just auto play those episodes one after another for a seemingly endless movie that would last until you arrived. So, I've seen these episodes a few times. Like, A LOT of times. Drilling these episodes into my mind over and over is what made me obsessed with it later (but we'll talk about that when we get to season 3).
Upon rewatching... they are exactly as I remember. There were no real surprises, so I don't feel like I have too much to say shock value wise, but that doesn't mean I don't have anything to say.
Plot
I've made a joke post about this before, but season one does fall into the treasure hunt formula. Find a fang blade. Lose it. Look for next one. Repeat for the next few episodes. Same thing can be said for the true potential. Find what holds them back emotionally, overcome it by the end of the episode to save the person/people you needed to fix your relationship with, glowing orb/pillar to make you certifiably awesome. For four. Episodes. Straight. Even if you space out the episodes where the ninja get their true potential, or when they find the fang blades, it would keep you on your toes a bit more. This being said... it does greatly help to give every episode a PLOT purpose. Every one of those "previously on ninjago" recaps was shoving a bunch of stuff in there. Most ninjago episodes do serve a purpose (except of course the atrocity that is the first half of season two - we WILL get to that next time) at least character development wise, but it is nice to have meaningful plot development too and keep a consistent pace throughout the season. This season certainly keeps up the pace. There is not an episode you can just miss. Even with the recap, you would still probably be confused. One thing that NO OTHER SEASON has over this one, hands down (aside from season 9 maybe, idk yet) is flow from season to season. Planning benefits this season GREATLY. It carries over things from the pilot, and sets up more to come in the next season. Watch them all together and it flows more naturally than any other season bookends. (Although I will say all the ninjago season transitions are smoother than any of Chima's [I will not touch that rabbit hole EVER again])
Characters
Character interaction is AMAZING this season. You really get to know the characters and feel all their growth equally. Every. One. Of. Them.
Think about it, Wu has an arc with his brother, Lloyd has an arc with the green ninja, Nya has an arc as samurai x, and it goes without saying that all of our regulars have an arc. And... that's about it. Those are all the characters. And I think that's why this season works so well.
You have four main characters, a handful of side characters, and they all get time and focus. Everyone has something to do during this season. As the season's go on and we accumulate more and more characters there's less screentime to go around, and the characters can suffer for it. There's a reason by season 6 they were literally REMOVING characters from the show. They don't have time to get distracted by Kai and his petty problems and drama this season, cuz Jay needs some focus for once, and we'd like to give him a little development gosh darn it! But I'm getting ahead of myself. This season works really well. Just because I feel like I should, I'm going to give you a breakdown on my feelings on new characters as they pop up or change dramatically, and because this is the first season, that means we get to do it for... all the characters! So here we go.
Nya
She's good this season. She's the most responsible in the group. The samurai x reveal was handled really well. Making all the ninja jealous of her really worked to give her credibility. She's just the right amount of strong and independent while still retaining her femininity. It goes WAY down hill when season 3 hits, but as for season 1 Nya I actually really enjoy her.
Wu
I mean... what are you going to say? He's Wu? Anyone have a problem with Wu? No? Good, moving on.
Kai
So... this is where my bias comes out. Quick piece of info, my elemental personality is water... so like the opposite of fire. I see a little bit of myself in each of the ninja... except Kai. And I think that's why he's my least favorite. Don't get me wrong! I don't hate Kai or anything! He's got some good lines (episode 5 comes to mind) he's adorkable enough. It's not hard to play or to write a hot head, but it's hard to play or write a hot head that I personally enjoy. I think what Kai is missing for me personally is the tripping over himself because of his attitude, and sarcasm. Sarcasm and sass. It's there, it's just not as prevalent as I personally would like it. He has a lot of opportunities and theoretical development, I'm not sure too many of them were taken advantage of fully, or maybe they just didn't read the way I personally can grasp it, but none of it felt very completed or meaningful. Like I said, I'm a water gal, so maybe I just can't relate and that's why it's not as powerful. I'd be interested to see your rankings of the ninja and how they line up with your own elemental personality. There's got to be a correlation there, right?
Conclusion, just not for me
Cole
Cole and Jay are tied for second favorite in general. It fluctuates from season to season depending on what's going on, but for season 1 Jay has Cole beat. I think the only reason just being screen time. Goodness knows Cole has been a bit neglected in that category, but hey. He's still really good for what he's got. I think in real life I probably act the most like Cole. I try to be serious, responsible and a leader and then I just get goofy sometimes. I love his true potential episode! It's funny, and heartwarming, and the only episode actually about him, so it's fun to see!
Conclusion, just needs more love
Jay
Jay is then, my second favorite for the season. He's funny. What else can I say? Personal opinion; Jay freakouts are the best this season. Especially at the climax. He just has that pure goofball-ness to him this season that makes his humor not annoying and actually relatable and funny. I also love his family to death! He loves them, he knows it, we know it, and the interactions between them are precious! It really is the way he plays off of other people that makes him enjoyable. He has a lot more dry humor here than other season, which I am partial to. I've got some kinks to work out with this one in later seasons but for now, he's good.
Conclusion, No, I'm the real Jay!
Zane
...My baby! Especially this season he is so innocent, loving, caring, and mysterious that I can't help but love the heck out of this guy! I am a sucker for a good mystery! He has this whole other world he's a part of with his "sixth sense" and falcon and running away at night. It's unique and special to him and it's really cool! Plus, there is SO much ATMOPHERE that comes with this guy and MAN I LOVE it! It's all just so beautiful. I love interactions between him and Jay, I love his mutual respect with Cole, I love EVERYTHING. This season and the next have the most growth for him, and it shows.
Conclusion, there's a reason we call him the pure one
Romance
Kinda adding this one last minute, but I think it needs to be here. All we got this season is Jay and Nya but BOY has their relationship changed! This is the single one thing that caught me off guard. I forgot what their relationship, especially before Jay's true potential, is like. Honestly, I love it! They're so awkward and clumsy around each other at first, and then grow into this understanding couple of one another. There's not too much emphasis on it, but it's sprinkled in everywhere. I like it! Maya approved!
Villians
The devourer arc is one of my favorites. Maybe it's the nostalgia tingles at work again, but the snakes are ninjago's quintessential villains. Nothing can ever hope to replace them. It feels natural in the plot, they have their own culture and beliefs, and their motivation makes sense. You have your legitimately scary villains and bumbling comic villians in perfect balance. Scales starting as second in command was an amazing call. It proves he has power he's earned, is not easily put down and sets up his lust for power to be explored later. Pythor. Oh man oh man Pythor. I am a sucker for ATMOSPHERE and his introduction is BEAUTIFUL. Utilizes the rule of 3s and completely subverts your expectations with that eerie empty tomb. I love it! So manipulative! So sly! They aren't my all time favorite villians, but they're certainly among the best the show has to offer.
Garmadon is also there. He's half good half bad... sorta. Idk. He's not especially interesting, at least compared to the snakes and what they're up to. Let's be honest, he's just waiting around to get awesome in season 2 ;) I do like when he comes in with all the skeletons like, "yeah, no one likes you. Screw snakes!" Only to walk that COMPLETELY back next season, but you know. Whatever.
Lloyd... should I put him here? He's enjoyably annoying for a little bit... and then just annoyingly annoying. It's not too bad. He has some redeeming moments. Once he's the green ninja and has some responsibility on his shoulders, he gets a lot better.
Climax
... I love it. I don't know what else to say. It's tense, it has proper build up, the threat is real, they get desperate, they come up with a creative solution, they work together, there are stakes, there's good action, good drama, good humor. I don't have any complaints. I can't touch this one. There are minor things, but I don't think they're worth bringing up. Go watch it. It's freaking awesome. Enough said.
Humor
Pretty good this season. There are a few eye roll lines, but that's in all the seasons. Things can get kinda stupid, but for the most part, especially some of the more subtle humor really works.
Favorite line of the season, Cole's "I don't like metaphors" episode 11 - All of Nothing. You're welcome.
Drama
Not overly saturated this season, which is kinda nice. I mean, there's always "drama" but as far as heavy stuff, we have Zane's whole crisis thing, and then the Garmadon family reunion. I'll get to how I feel about the Zane stuff down below. As for the Garmadon stuff... it's fine. Gets a lot better next season, but for now... fine.
Spotlight Episode
So for every season I'll choose one episode that stood out to me to either praise or criticize in detail. There are a lot of episodes that come to mind for season 1 for one reason or another. The one about the power of rumors (also known as the pink ninja episode), lloyd rescuing the team, Cole's true potential is a classic episode with a good mix of heart and comedy, and of course THE FINALE, but because I am biased, and because I am a sucker for personal drama, season one's spotlight episode is episode 7, Tick tock, Zane's true potential. This was by far the episode me and my brother watched together the most. Aside from the movie Cars, it's probably the one piece of media we have scene the most times together. The episode begins by establishing Wu leaving, the ninja are at a loss of what to do and then... THE FALCON. Best character this season! XD seriously, the falcon theme is one of, if not my favorite piece of music in the show. Certainly the most memorable. And most importantly it kicks in the ATMOSPHERE! Have I mentioned ATMOSPHERE?
ATMOSPHERE
I am a sucker for some good ATMOSPHERE (no, I will not stop spelling it in all caps), and BOY the falcon chase scene! Zane is slowly taken away from his team members in order to reflect upon himself, and as he runs through the snow by himself to follow this bird you can see his determination, curiosity, desperation, and just that Zane factor that makes you go "awww, my child! He must be protected!" (Even though, you know, he was built to protect and all that) but just AGHH! I can't put into words for beautiful this whole sequences is! Go watch it right now! Look at that beautiful Zane! Listen to that music! That FREAKING MUSIC AGGHHHHHH! I LOVE IT SO AGGRESSIVELY! LISTEN TO IT! LIKE SERIOUSLY, LISTEN, HERE'S THE LINK!
https://youtu.be/2p07cgwwYws
It makes my heart SO happy! Idk if I'm the only one who feels that way about this scene but oh... oh how it gets me. Every. Time. Michael Kramer and Jay Vincent are freAKING GODS!
Okay. I'm done with the falcon chase. Now onto, like... the part of the episode people care about. The tree house, again, an amazing location. Unique, and mysterious, and as soon as he walks in, you just get this sense of memory. The flash back is ADORABLE and the others finding him... I think this was handled pretty well. Their reactions seem genuine (I mean, I would want to get out of there as soon as humanly possible too XD) and you can feel the genuine concern from all of the ninja, trying to help their buddy out in their own ways.
Zane's true potential feels really earned, and his thing that holds him back was established as soon as the series began. He was different and weird and he didn't know where he came from. Coming to accept what he is, accepting his past and finding an identity of his own is what gives him the power to unlock it.
Now, just for fun and because I know I'm going to hear it in the comments like "why is Zane's discovery of identity more valid than anyone else's? What about Kai! His true potential is entirely based on finding his purpose!" And yes. Theoretical commentor you make a valid point, but I think the key difference is in the identity they find when they unlock it.
Zane accepts his personality, his past, and his robotic nature as himself and can be proud of who he is as his own person. The thing that held him back was vague and sort of indefinable, and what he became afterwards was concrete, solid, and dependable. That's why you feel like the character has gotten stronger.
Kai goes in the opposite direction. The thing that holds him back is that he wants to be the green ninja. That's solid and concrete. The problem then becomes that you know exactly how the potential will play out. He's going to face something, discover he's not the green ninja, and come to terms with it. And his ending identity is much more vague. His purpose is to protect the green ninja... okay, what does that mean? What kind of a person does that make you? He didn't change as a person, his views about a certain topic where changed. Those are two very different levels of progress.
And I know you can argue that it wasn't the green ninja thing he needed to get past, he needed to get past his pride and all that, but even if you make that argument that conclusion is harder to reach and less apparent than Zane's progress as a character. Zane's progress is entirely centered on him. Kai's progress will never be separated from Lloyd. Just watch the episode. It feels like a Lloyd episode. I remember thinking the first time I watched it when he came out of the volcano "wait... what was his true potential? Why is this happening?"
Anyway, that's my little soap box rant. I hope I didn't offend too many Kai fans. Again, it's probably just my water bias coming into play. I know there's a frame work in place for development of all these characters, and every single one of them gets an arc and theoretically everything should work out and make sense and work beautifully and perfectly, but sometimes when you step back and look at it, it's just a matter of "but does it work?" And maybe it's a matter of opinion, but Kai's potential didn't work for me.
I've been on this way to long. I'm stopping now.
Misc
I really like the suits this season. They're all unique and the masks... compliment the Lego head shape nicely? Does that make sense? It makes them look a bit cuter. Anyone else see that? Idk, maybe I'm just going crazy.
Watch this season thinking about how the snakes become good in season 3...
I want more of the Pink ninja.
I love scales and his slight incompetence. Not total, just slight.
This exchange:
Pythor: I hardly have any friends
Lloyd: Woah! I hardly have any friends too!
Pythor: You don't say!
All together I really like this season. Light hearted, funny, good action and characters. Not super compelling or anything, but it doesn't need to be. Second best season for nostalgia tingles in general, third best for me personally. Most of this is a matter of opinion, so don't fret too much over anything I say. I'd love to see your thoughts/rankings/comments/disagreements in the notes! That's the point of this thing!
If there are any aspects of the season I skipped, let me know, I'm not perfect.
Thanks for reading! And if you got this far... I don't know. Work the word saxophone into your comment. Bonus points if it makes sense!

INTRODUCING THE HEROS OF TIME FROM ANOTHER UNIVERSE!!
Greetings! Your local nerd is here too show off some more OCs, and this time they're from Dragon Ball! There is multiple universes in Dragon Ball but this one is kind of different, this universe is breached through Hell and a right is torn from one world to another. The villians from the original villians find their way into a new world to bring havoc upon, it's up to Kai-Lan and her friends to send them back to their original world!
Two are not here, why? I can't get a screenshot saved of Majin Kai and Trance's race isn't in the game..
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Majin Kai of Light Lucifer→ Majin
Majin Kai of Darkness Ornias → Majin
Kai-Lan → Saiyan (Protagonist)
Heeroine → Purified Saiyan
Lieutenant Onyx → Human
Android 0.5 → Prototype Android
Kohlrabi → Albino Namekian
Runi → Heir of the Arcosians
Galax → Gravity Arcosian
Echo → Angel (Trance's Attendant)
Goddess of Time Trance → Kidd's race (Black in this universe)
Goddess of Time Slaine → Kidd's race (White in this universe)
God of Destruction Kidd → Kidd's race (Gray in this universe)
God of Destruction Soul →Soul's race (Black dog rather than cat)
Supreme Kai of Time Kyrem
Lady Kai Prima
Arureruto →Saiyan infused Demon
Let me give a small explanation on some of my bbies here.
Lucifer- ⚠️UNDER CONSTRUCTION ⚠️
Ornias- ⚠️UNDER CONSTRUCTION⚠️
Kai-Lan- ⚠️UNDER CONSTRUCTION ⚠️
Heeroine- Her true name is always kept hidden, as well as her brothers, Heero. The two of them are Saiyans and being a hero was always their dream, they trained everyday with every chance they got. Even using the Hyperbolic Time Chamber that's in their universe, they are known as the strongest Saiyans in the universe so far.
Lieutenant Onyx- A true and trustworthy young man, add loyal too! He will go through Hell and high waters to make sure his conrades and civilians are safe, being the lieutenant if the Red Ribbon Army this is the perfect trait. His idol is the General Blue who does exist in this world, he does everything he can for him but he may still disobey if the situation isn't justified. Hemaybegayforhim
Android 0.5- She is the first build of the Androids, she was considered a success yet a failure due to her occasionally malfunctioning. She was shut down and put up but years later, someone working for Capsule Corp traveled back in search of lost materials. Instead of finding what they needed, they found an Android to take back with them. (The mystery person is empty for grabs, so if you want to be apart feel free.)
Kohlrabi- A Namekian born albino, he is the youngest spawn of the grand elder (???) and is known for his helpful personality. He is the intimidating type though he is still young, but he loves to help others anyway he can. He's well known for carrying senzu beans and antidotes, he is as much as a medic as a skilled fighter.
Runi- The youngest of the two brothers, his father is dead and his brother has took his place. (Brother is open) He is not cold hearted BUT he does have ice type attacks. He is special with glacial and freezing types while his brother does fire/lava. A lot of their races make fun of them, all because of fire and ice-.
Galax- ⚠️ UNDER CONSTRUCTION ⚠️
Echo- Echo is the youngest of the Angelic race in this universe, he once was the weakest of the family but ever since he was appointed to Yrance he has his hands full. Between her falling asleep during battle/training to accidentally altering time, he can't relax and has to constantly fix her mess ups. After years he has got her better and his own strength has improved, sky rocketing him to be the second strongest child. The strongest so far his one of his sisters, and one of his brothers is under him. He tries his best to keep Trance happy whom he crushes on just as much as protect z as well getting his father's approval to become a strong and wise Angel and be the next high priest though being the youngest of the whole family. (The Angel race in this universe varies from blue to green, blue is stronger than green however. The ones born blue green is stronger which Echo is born that way, four out of twelve children is that way so first come first chooses to be the higher-ups in this. If you want to be the Angel appointed to the other two I am making message me, if you want to make your own deity and Angel then say that too. úwù)
Trance- In this universe, there is three skin colors of the Trance's race. (Like Beerus in this universe) Trance is solid black and is kind of lazy, she likes her catnaps and can be a hassle for Echo. She is the equivalent to Beerus BUT is more lazy than him, she will often times fall asleep in the middle of battle or training. She can alter time and even just paid it, however, she tries not to alter and mess with time herself though she may ever appear in a timeline fix herself with Echo to aid your hero. (I am going to make a gray and white God/Goddess as well, however, I am still leaving open places for other deities. So feel free to message me to be one!)
Slaine- Slaine is the second Goddess of Time, being part of Trance's sporting the white skin color. She is semi lazy but more productive than Trance, the two wear turquoise fusion earrings to reach an even greater form. She often times creates small changes in history without realizing it, but that's no problem for her or Tramce to fix before her attendant notices.
Kidd- ⚠️UNDER CONSTRUCTION ⚠️
Soul- ⚠️ UNDER CONSTRUCTION⚠️
Kyrem- ⚠️ UNDER CONSTRUCTION ⚠️
Nino- ⚠️ UNDER CONSTRUCTION⚠️
Arureruto- ⚠️ UNDER CONSTRUCTION ⚠️
I am sorry if this is a poor explanation of them, but I tried my best to make it brief.. But this is only some of my OCs, I want to make more BUT I want to interact with other people just as much.. So if anyone is honestly interested in being a true character in my universe, please reblog with your OCs, a brief bio, and tag me in it! If I see them as no God mod, I will add them in! Especially since I got several open places for others to either first in or for me to eventually make someone after so long of no one wanting the place.
Please tell me how terrible or neat I am on this, like said I tried to make it brief so hope it doesn't sound stupid..

Seriously, the hardest part is the beginning and I am not kidding when I say that you just need to print, cut, fold and paste. Don’t worry!
The files we will give you are ready to use.
This is a very important question. We all know that Tony Stark or most of the characters on our website have an athletic complexion; in this way, if you are the proud owner of a big belly I would recommend you to work out a little bit before you decide to build your Ironman costume or any other costume.
The 3D files (ready to print) are from someone who is 5.872 feet (1.78 m) tall, 163.14 pounds (74 kgs) and waist 30.
If you are near to these numbers you don’t have to change anything, but if you are NOT near to these numbers or you are planning to build this for a kid then you just need to change the scale of the files.
And Guess What? You will find the information to change the scale easily in the members’ area. And we will also help you to know what is the right scale for you.
Mmmm, around 6 months… JUST KIDDING!
Of course not, this depends on how much time you spend per day, some parts of the process require a few hours to dry.
But if you spend around 2-3 hours per day you could finish your costume in less than a month. Of course, if you just work on it on weekends maybe you will need more.
As I told you, it depends on how much time you invest to finish this…  Also, if you put more attention in the final detailing you could delay more time but you will have a better-finished armor.
Of course, we can!
And not any costume, we can make a crazy-badass costume for you.

Favorites : Lolita (1962)
Tumblr media
I’ve been a major fan and devotee of Stanley Kubrick for ages now... anyone who knows anything about my love of film knows that.  Normally, I don’t need an excuse to dive into his films.  However, with the recent passing of Sue Lyon, I realized just how long it’d been since I sat down and watched Lolita, one of the first films of Kubrick’s to garner major controversy.  The risque subject matter, and the rather frank approach of addressing it, is still shocking to some to this day, and the film remains an early classic in a catalog full of shining achievement.
Professor Humbert H. Humbert (James Mason), on his way to an assignment at Beardsley College in Ohio, stops in New Hampshire for the summer in hopes of finding a room to rent.  He answers an ad for an available room belonging to Charlotte Haze (Shelley Winters), a widow suffering from ferocious sexual frustration, and at first he is turned off, but his mind quickly changes after seeing Charlotte’s daughter Dolores (Sue Lyon), who answers to Lolita.  The young Lolita is beautiful and flirtatious, and Humbert finds himself head over heels for her, despite the massive age gap between them.  Charlotte, with her demanding and obsessive nature, clings heavily to Humbert, and in a play to get alone time with him, she sends Lolita away to summer camp, while simultaneously putting an ultimatum of marriage towards Humbert if he chooses to stay.  Humbert regretfully accepts in hopes of biding time until Lolita returns, but upon discovering his intentions, Charlotte falls into a fit of rage, leading to a fatal accident.  Humbert takes advantage of the situation, picking up Lolita and keeping the news of her mother a secret for days, all the while attempting to woo her, and due to her grief, Lolita decides to stay with Humbert, attending a high school near Beardsley College when Humbert accepts his position.  During the school year, a mysterious Dr. Zempf (Peter Sellers), who turns out to be famous playwright and director Claire Quilty in disguise, convinces Humbert to allow Lolita to take part in the school play, but Humbert soon discovers that Zempf has other plans for Lolita.  Humbert attempts to take her away, but during a hospital visit, Humbert leaves her unattended, only to find her missing when he checks in on her.  Humbert is shattered, and dedicates his life to finding Lolita and rekindling the attraction between them, discovering shocking truths along the way.
Kubrick puts on a masterclass in insinuation, with layers upon layer of subtext bursting through the seams of the narrative.  Large doses of visual gags accompany the verbal titillation, with this combination of scintillating subject matter famously earning tons of backlash against the film from supporters of the Production Code and the Catholic Legion of Decency, despite Kubrick’s toning down of the intimacy between Humbert and Lolita found in the original novel.  The film is extremely self-aware, using humor to soften the shock of the subject matter, but not making light of it or glorifying it.  The way that the dramatic tension is fueled by the tangle of sexual tensions hits the root tone of the novel in the only way that film is able to.
The narrative is fueled on gaslighting, mind games and lies that fly from all sides.  The levels of emotional manipulation coming from all parties involved is really and truly toxic.  By default, there are no true heroes, villians, protagonists or antagonists, but if these roles must be designated, Lolita would be the protagonist by default due to her age, and Claire Quilty would be the antagonist due to his malicious, trickster nature.
Lolita is not afraid to be funny, even in the shadow of such controversial subject matter, with Peter Sellers even making a mocking reference to Spartacus right out of the gate.  The writing is humor-filled poetry, with the verbal pugilism flying between characters in a fast and furious nature.  Kubrick reels in the cinematic flare of his previous films, opting instead for reserved cinematography that allows the story to be front and center, with his boldest compositions coming in the climax and falling action.  On top of that, he somehow manages to lean into the controversy, almost celebrating the risque moments in anticipation of public backlash.
James Mason is delightfully pitiful, toeing the line between hapless idiot and lovestruck fool as he exudes desperation for lust, followed by desperation for revenge.  Sue Lyons is sly and coy, putting up a front of maturity propped up by a foundation of innocence, wonder and fear.  Peter Sellers does what he does best, donning multiple character hats in a preview of what he would later master in his continued collaboration with Kubrick.  Shelley Winters plays the character that garners the most sympathy, inviting the poisonous element into her home that eventually unravels the worlds of many characters.  These four are the root of the story, with a host of memorable faces filling in the spaces to keep the story moving forward in the most entertaining way possible.
Lolita is the kind of film that can really push certain viewer’s buttons.  For those unable to suspend disbelief, the experience of the film is most certainly uncomfortable.  If taken at face value as a piece of art, however, the film really and truly stands up, joining Dr. Strangelove, or How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love the Bomb in the rare air of Kubrick comedies.

Johto!
(My home girl’s region! :D)
1. Which starter would I pick?-This is like Sinnoh but instead of me adoring them all my reaction is more,‘eh, alright.’ Out of them all I always end up going with Cyndaquil no matter how many times I tell myself Im gonna choose someone else. Idk, maybe it’s the eyes and the part of me that cosplays Italy can’t get over them. X3
2. Favorite Evolutionary line/pokemon?Ok when it comes to Johto there are alot of pokemon in it that I forget are from Johto. It’s partially due to there being few complete lines in this region, which is something that can’t be fixed now. However houndoom and houndour hold a special place in my heart. They most closely resemble my own dog, and it combines my two favorite types. Idc if it’s a mainstream choice, this is one line that is amazing. 👌
3. Least favorite evolution/pokemon?-Sunflora. Hands down because it ever so greatly triggers me. See my favorite flower is a sunflower. When I heard there was a sunflower pokemon I flipped in joy. I saw sunkern’s adorableness and gushed. When it evolved I adored the happy attitude. Then I found out how much it sucks in battle and felt my heart get crushed. When I say bad it has one of the worst stats in the whole series, and I know my muse is Karen, so yes I know her quote about fighting with your favorites, but when your favorite looses to a top percentage rattata it’s time to get a new favorite. Also they missed the chance to make a fire grass type. ;_;
4. Favorite gym leader/elite four?-Alot of the gym leaders in this region left an impression, and really interacted with the player. However Jasmine, and her precious pure self always makes me smile. I mean c'mon she’s one of the only people we’ve seen nickname their pokemon. Plus she calls it Amphy, like how a kid calls a teddy bear ‘teddy’. Then at the same time she also commands a giant metal snake that can snap you in half with one good hit. Bless this girl. Ok this next one I maybe a lil bias but um, Karen, duh. X3 Dark type was my favorite long before Karen came along, and btw I never played the original gold and silver so it took me awhile to meet her. When I saw her in the game and heard her quote I was like,“WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN!? WHY DIDN’T I GET TO INTERACT WITH YOU AT ALL IN THIS GAME!? HOLY FUDGE! You’re like…woah…” It was that same sense of awe I got when first meeting Cynthia though this chick had more edge. Then I found out about her crimminal side and I am sold on her as my favorite for eternity.
5. Favorite town/city?-Blackthorn, and half of the reason is due to that name. When I played HGSS I was going through my warrior cats phase and so this nake was everything. Tbh it still sounds like such an amazing name for a town. I mean it’s intense, causes emotion, and makes the place seem intense. Which it is. I mean it’s in the mountains, you have to scale a cliff to leave, and there is a cave called the den of dragons that has dragons. Can you imagine telling people that’s where you grew up!? Just introduce yourself as the person from Blackthorn and watch people awe over it, you win life bud.
6. Favorite non-town/city location?-Hint it’s a tower. No not the bell one, I’m talking the burned one. Idk why but exploring abandoned or grungy places is so much fun to me! It’s like an adventure, and you never know what could be in there! (Lol like legendary doggos x3) Plus this place is like falling apart and has all of this history! I would go nuts researching and taking in the details of the place! Finally I know some people hate the smell of campfires but it’s my favorite thing ever, so any burned wood smell would be like a bonus.
7. Side mechanic that distracted me from the main game.-The pokewalker was up until I accidentally washed it a week after getting the game. Yeah, lost an eevee that day. Anyway by far the pokeathalon sucked my attention away more than any other side mechanic in any other game. I loved that place cause it could make my wimpy pokemon (like Sunflora) great, and my already strong pokemon stronger. Also I believe it was the flag capture that I struggled the most with. Took me literal hours but I finally beat the record there and felt such victory getting to the final room.
8. Would I punch the main antagonist in the face?-I’m not gonna count Giovanni cause he wasn’t really a part of this except being someone they were trying to get back in the crew. As far as the antagonists go there’s four of them which makes it a bit harder. Also like I said they were just trying to get the band back together, it wasnt like they were going to destroy the world like alot of the other villians. So like the last one, if it was in the moment yeah I’d try to apprehend them, and punch if necessary. Though I wouldn’t say too much was at steak for anything too extreme. Also post game I think just talking to them all individually would be good. Not in a therapist way just a casual convo might go a long way.
9. Would I punch my rival in the face?-I probably would of tried to multiple times. Sorry Silver but stranger or not you stole a pokemon and broke a wall of someone’s prolerty. That’s kinda illegal. After kicking your butt in battle I’d try to arrest you. I mean if Elm later said it was chill, said you were free to keep the pokemon, and you two worked out some deal for the wall then I’d be cool with it. However knowing myself I would be focused on righting said wrong until it was handled. I mean maybe we’d befriend each other somehow while I’m nailing his face, but even then I’d encourage him to go handle the situation.
10. Rating of the game 1-10?….I am sorry Sinnoh fans but 8. Look, this isn’t nostalgia talking. I never played the original games so if anything I ought to have more nostalgia with Sinnoh. However I don’t because when it comes to games I look for story. Johto just felt as though it had a more complete story. The characters were engaging, and I could relate with them. There were so many quirks and twists that made it feel unique. Yeah ok the pokemon designs lack in evolutions, and style, but I prefer story to design. No the whole world wasn’t at steak. In all honesty the villians were more brutish than they were intimidating. Though I could follow their reasoning, and in some ways rooted that things did work out somehow for them. Plus the ties of different families with Clair & Lance, Janine & Koga, Silver & Giovanni, were all elements I enjoyed seeing. (Then there’s all the ones in the manga that I found out about later). It made the region seem more personal and tied together. Plus who didn’t love the calls from your mom, trainers, and yes even Joey. Though slightly repetitive it all helped bring the player into the world, and I love seeing that.
(Dont get me wrong though, we need another Sinnoh game first, then maybe a Unova or Kanto would be good.)
(And @evolutionexpert , tbh Elm is my favorite prof so nice. 👌 )
