I’m a little fucked up thinking about how if this was told traditionally, Centaurworld would’ve been centered on the Mysterious Woman.
It’s a traditional romance turned tragedy and I eat that shit up. Imagine it focusing on this amazing multiworld place and there’s the chance of a whirlwind Romeo and Juliet inspired romance between a common elktaur and a human princess.
MW’s love interest mysteriously disappears, but General arrives and reminds her of him, so she lets herself fall for him. They marry and things seem at ease, but there’s always something a little... off. He’s clearly keeping a secret and their life together is marked by little tragedies.
This culminates in her discovering the elk and learning what General did to himself. She angrily rejects him and the elk, only to see her husband and former love, who are the same person, go to war with each other. They claim it’s for her, but she knows the truth. That all of this is born from a deep self hatred.
And it seems to end with her beloved still split in two, part of him locked into the rift. She’s gone too, trapped in a bubbly world while dealing with knowing she was the catalyst for this destruction, even if she knows on some level it wasn’t about her.
And then Centaurworld happens, and she’s terrified because she knows the once wonderful creature she loved is willing to tear the world apart out of his own self hatred. That he could never accept himself and he wouldn’t let anyone else do it either. And she’s given a chance to end it. But she can’t.
Because the Nowhere King is letting her. At the end of the day he still loves her. The one bright point in his pointless existence. And she still loves him, the elktaur he used to be. The General she fell in love with after her chance at love seemed to disappear. And his anger and hatred returns because she hesitated.
And then, after everything we see play out, we come to the Last Lullaby. And she hesitates again, and again, and this moment hits so fucking hard canonically because there’s a depth and a breadth of a story that’s only been hinted at
because Centaurworld is about Horse learning to not hate herself like the elktaur did. That she can accept herself through her friends and loved ones’ actions and this leads to a true self love that allows her to become a shaman with everyone by her side
but MW’s hesitance still hits so fucking hard because we know she still loves him. Despite everything, she does, and she wishes that he could’ve accepted that even if he hated himself other people would love him for him. She still loves him, but she knows he’ll never accept that. And he has to die to make up for all the pain he’s caused.
I think Centaurworld would’ve been good from that perspective too, but I like what we got. I really love that Horse learned to love herself not just through self acceptance. But like... every single time she doubted herself after something happened, she was affirmed and loved and cared for. And even when she reunites with Rider, after some understandable confusion, Rider is just as accepting and loving and never for a moment actually lets Horse down.
Horse has to learn to accept herself, or else she could’ve gone the way of Elktaur. But unlike him, she listened to the people around her and let their affirmation soak in.
And like. the old phrase “you can only love others if you love yourself” is bullshit. And I think Centaurworld affirms my way of thinking here. Horse sure as hell didn’t love herself, couldn’t truly accept herself until she saw Rider again, not really. But the show demonstrates how important it is to not only to have a support system but to be able to open yourself up to them and actually lean on them when you need to.
I have a lot of feelings about Centaurworld

Elktaur/Reader/Mysterious Woman PT. 1
Took this off my AO3 acc, to elaborate the character names are just what they are. Woman being Princess, Elktaur being Elktaur, etc
Stray lights had flown in through opaque, thin curtains that swayed from the open window, it barely illuminated the room full of clothes strewn about haphazardly and the mess of papers that sat by themselves in bunches across the ground. The papers had small sketches of constellations and comparison sheets of Centaurworld’s and the Human World’s stars, moon, and sky to find all that you could. The endless possibilities were endless. Especially with the centaurs’ magic, they could conjure up ways to explore space in a way humans were not able to! The number of benefits that came with living on this side of the Rift was more than amazing, astronomical feats could all be completed so easily! Your aggressive scribbles against another paper that browned at its corners and were now inked with sentences about the observations made on Centaurworld’s stars, the charming aspect so far as how the sun represented a moletaur despite being a- a… You stopped in your scribbles, eyes blanking on the page as exhaustion and drowsiness caught up after realizing that you never really got the chance to sleep because you were busy doing research about the stars again. The world alignment of constellations always made you curious too, though none of that was important right now when you saw the daybreak pierce through your curtains. In an instant, you shot up from the wooden tile floor and bolted to your dresser to fish out whatever clothes you had in there. You were practically losing it as you pushed through countless bundles of clothing before slipping on something akin to a cloak, tunic, and some wide-leg trousers that barely hovered over your shins while slipping on some shoes. A weird assemble of clothing on par with scrolls under your arm, you scampered down the hall to your door, and just as you slammed it open- a startled woman on the other side jumped back in surprise. Thankfully, she didn’t get hit by the abruptly opened door and had only stumbled, the woman seemed fine. You froze on the spot, realizing what you had done, "Princess!" The startled shriek was enough to make the lavender-haired princess look at you and wave off your worries, "It's no big deal, not like I got hurt or anything," she chuckled while brushing down her dress, hiking up her skirt to brush down the hem with a glance to, you, her acquaintance. You became flustered, babbling nonsensical muck to apologize for being so brash but she only waved it off. The princess was more than understanding of the small mishap, her gentle touch resting on your shoulder and waving the 'problem' off. She then linked her arm around your shoulders to pull you in close to her side with a sly smile resting on her lips and her eyes alight with curiosity, "So," she began with a gesture to the scrolls you held under your arm, "What're they for? C'mon, you can tell me!" She excitedly clung to you as you both began to walk down toward the docks. You shook your head, making a motion as if to zip your lips shut, "I can't tell you that, it's for your father and my team!”
She pouted in reply, "But I'm the princess, shouldn't I know more about this for when I take the throne?" Her attempts to make you loosen the lid on this 'secret' research were fruitless, she knew all too well that you couldn't disclose anything about what you were doing but she still hoped you would humor her enough to say what it was. You sighed, shaking your head and looking away from her for a moment, you mulled over letting the princess know at least something about the operation, "Well, there is-" she suddenly interrupted you, "We were also attacked by a beartaur! It was an invigorating experience, we were-! Wait what?" She looked at you just as you looked at her and with a horrified expression but she just waved it off yet again and laughed, "I'm fine, but my guard is absolutely paralyzed with fear! You should've been there to see it!" She swayed with you held tight against her side, causing you both to fumble down the dirt path like drunkards rushing home. You roll your eyes and try to keep balance while the dirt path merged to gravel while you both got closer to the docks. It was beautiful, the world was so saturated in Centaurworld with greener trees, grass, bluer skies, and water, everything felt like it was a part of a fairytale and you were more amazed by it the more you saw the world. You wanted to travel and see the entirety of this world but you had a job, a job to stay within the boundaries of where you were posted. While engrossed in your own thoughts, you didn't notice the princess' leg sweeping yours out from under you and like dominoes the both of you tumbled onto the pearly cobblestones of the docks. You shrieked yet again, collapsing facefirst while the princess landed across and on top of you. The scrolls you had now rolled off, some dipping off the edge and into the water while some teetered close to it, the clatter of hooves caught the attention of both of you- the sight of an elktaur suddenly dashing on over to collect the scrolls safe from the water and return them to you while you and the princess recovered from falling. You look up and the first thing you noticed was the grand horns that loomed over you and the elktaur they belonged to, you felt your throat dry up as he knelt in front of you and held out the scrolls that fell, "I'm sorry, the other ones fell in the water and I couldn't get to them, I managed to... To save these for-" he looked tongue-tied, stuffing the scrolls into your hands while the princess stood up and rushed over to the edge of the docks with a horrified gasp, "Oh my flonk! I'm so sorry, I-" The water rose suddenly, beckoned on by her hand as it let the soaked and dripping scrolls splat against the cobblestones. You whine and let your head hang low, "Those were important! Now they're ruined! Oh, I'm going to be beheaded!" You bunch your hands in your hair with the dry scrolls smushed against your hair, Princess looked apologetically to you and the wet scrolls, doing her best to remove all the water from them as bundles of water pooled out in a huge clump from each and were dropped back into the water. They were somewhat dry but the ink was ruined now, she pursed her lips tightened into a thin frown, "I can explain to my father it was my fault, you don't need to fret." She reassured you while the Elktaur awkwardly stood there and rubbed his hand against his shoulder without a clue as to what to say.
“It's fine," you begin, inspecting the scrolls you had in hand with tired eyes, "These were the important ones." Princess blinked, as if not understanding what you said, so you repeated. "The ones you have are my doodles of constellations, I just mixed up the seals-" you squeaked in surprise as the wet scrolls were thrown at you- the elktaur dodging them in time, "You dork! Don't worry me like that!" Despite her tone, and her furrowed brows, she still broke into laughter and held her stomach with a snort. The elktaur looked between the two of you, unsure of what to say, he was so red in the face and for a moment you thought steam was about to come from his face. He spoke up nervously, "W- well, I'm glad your.. Yo- your your- y'know's is fine! Ha!" He rubbed the back of his neck, you could feel the secondhand embarrassment all the way from where you were on the wet cobblestones. He helped you up, linking his hand around your arm and hoisting you up while keeping the most distance that he could. Princess had come strolling over, bumping her elbow against his side, "Smooth, very smooth." She winks at him before noticing his uniform, she recognized it as one of the high-ranking officers that maintained the Rift. She gripped your shoulders from behind, "My, saving super important scrolls and keeping the Rift up and running? I should let my father know of you," she smiled, leaning over your shoulder and looking to the mystery elk who perked up and found his vocabulary. The elktaur shook his head briskly, "No, no! I don't need any thanks! It's just, y'know- I'm doing my job!' You quirked your brow, lifted up your scrolls, and gestured to them with your other hand, "Saving scrolls that are meant for the king is not just 'a part of your job', you deserve some thanks!" You exclaim and Princess had nodded in agreement, the elktaur's hind legs bent closer to his front legs, rubbing his neck yet again, he obviously was overwhelmed with the compliments and an offer to put in a good word about him. Suddenly, the woman behind you squealed in delight, linking arms with you and the elk while dragging the two of you toward the Rift gates. "We should host a party in your favor!" She looked up to him and then to you, "Shouldn't we?" She then turns to you, making you nod as a result of the whiplash her sudden hyperness brought. You lean against her, sighing with a small glance to the pretty elktaur you both stumbled onto and felt the question linger on your tongue before being spat out.
"What's your name?"
He looks to you as if he wasn't already making small glances at you, his face tinges a crimson hue before he can begin to utter it, "Funny enough, I'm Elktaur. But you can call me something else for short!" He quickly blurts out the last sentence, raising his hand up shakily before letting it press against the side of his face while he turned away in embarrassment. The elktaur was Elktaur, you weren't about to question it and instead just gave your name in exchange for his name. For a moment, you catch him tensing up before relaxing like a ball of putty. You could bet he had a prettier smile too, you imagined the little laugh lines stretching upward and revealing the sweetest smile ever- "Just to be clear, you're saying all that out loud," Princess hummed as you both neared the Rift Gate, the sight of people lining up with fresh goods, ore, and whatever else they had on hand to go through the gate was all blank to you when she had said that your head spun. The elktaur had unlinked arms with Princess, turning to look back at the both of you, coughing into his sleeve before speaking; "I have to go manage the gate, make sure everything is running smoothly... Wouldn't want any mishaps to occur," he spoke a little more formally this time as he excused himself and you couldn't help but hope you'd get to meet him again. Yet, your thoughts were interrupted yet again when Princess yanked you close to her side again, "Looks like it's gonna be you and me," she teased while you both got into line. You can't help the smile that crept to your face before sinking into the side embrace, pulling out one of the scrolls the elktaur saved, "You mentioned wanting to know what I was researching, right?" Her eyes became wide, watching you unroll it intently, she nodded excitedly.
"Well, come closer, we got time to read it now."

So, I finished Centaurworld last night/this morning at like 1 am. So, forgive my inability to use the Keep Reading function on mobile, but Spoilers Below:
Honestly, I really found the Nowhere King's backstory to be compelling. There's the obvious less of don't change the core of who you are for others lest you succumb to self-hate. But, I don't know, something about the way Elktaur since he has no real name talked about his body/his form read very body dysmorphia to me. And I don't understand what that experience is like, so I can only speak to what I've observed from others. So feel free to tell me I have no idea what I'm talking about or debate my thoughts on this.
That said, looking at what became of the Elktaur after he split or, well, transitioned, I can see two different lessons that can be taken away from it. The first and admittedly worst take, the one that concerns me most, is a anti-transition lesson. That transitioning would make you wash yourself in toxicity of your gender. Which probably has less legs to stand on than the other lesson. That being, be kind to the part of yourself that you're leaving behind or you'll fall into a dark spiral of hatred of both that former part of you and your current self.
Again, I could just be talking completely out of my ass and misconstruing things, but that's just what I saw as I grew to understand Elktaur, The Nowhere King and General's story.
Also, as an aside, I feel really heartbroken for The Mysterious Woman, who I've taken to calling Amelia because she reminds me of Amelia from Infinity Train lol. She didn't deserve the lies she was told and the pain she had to go through because The General would rather bury who he was than offer that part acceptance and understanding. Amelia deserved better.

Long, Stormy Nights
Elktaur/Reader
Outside the library, you could hear the roar of thunder and cracks of lightning something you felt familiar with all too well. Thankfully, the centaur in charge of the library didn’t decide to close as they wanted to offer shelter to anyone coming in to avoid getting soaked. You loll your fingers against the pages of the book in your hand but you long forgot about what you were reading as your eyes fell to the grand window in front of you, the rain pelting against the glass in ferocious thumps. It was more than what you thought was possible, would there even be the appearance of a taurnado? You’ve heard of those things, never saw one of course, you just knew of the terrifying beasts that claimed souls in their winds. Slowly, your hands pushed the covers of the book in to a close and couldn’t help the sigh huffed out from your lips- nothing but boredom in these parts. Despite all of Centaurworld’s wackiness and craziness, you pursed your lips tighter as you lifted your gaze to see the silhouette of a tall being with a gangly, human-like top with an elk bottom half appeared in the window- a cloak shroud and clung tight to its body, the silhouette shuddered and crept backward in some sort of awkward, fumbling steps that only led for the centaur outside to fall on its feet. The book you had in hand was instantly on the table side as you rushed outside to help the poor thing that fell, the muddy ground overrun with rain drenched your shoes while you rounded the building to find the fallen elktaur with his beautiful antlers made visible through the crack of lightning that illuminated the sky. He was pretty, yet obviously hurt, so you pushed aside whatever thoughts you may have had while ushering to him- “Are you ok? Come here, come, let me get you inside,” your voice and hands reached him, startling the elktaur who jumped at your touch and words. A human? All the way out here too, he looked down at your legs and confirmed that you indeed had only one pair of legs and then looked back to you. He was in awe, eyes glittered in the rain as droplets caught on his and your lashes. A soft noise of, ‘thank you’ broke from his throat as he let you help him up to stand on all fours again. Your hand didn’t end up leaving his for a while, as you led him back to the safer, warmer confines of the library you noticed how he trembled from the cold rain soaked into his skin and fur. His head was turned away as to not look at you, finding it hard to believe such a beautiful creature acknowledged him, his heart rose to his throat and found it hard to speak his mind. Yet, your thumb circled on his knuckles to comfort him and guide him through the motions, “Th— thank you.. I was on my way to home and I got lost on the way because of- the uh—“ he struggled, watching cautiously when you let go of his hand to grab up a seat for him, “The storm?” You finished the sentence for him with a pleased smile.
He nods, feeling his face grow hot despite how cold he felt, you gesture and usher him to take a seat which he awkwardly does. All of his movements were clunky and felt as though he was some schoolboy crushing on someone. The elktaur’s eyes cascaded to the ground, seeing that you’d left him and he assumed it was just you going to go back to do what you previously were. Obviously, no pretty human would want to be near him and his ‘centaur stench’, he hit his palm against his forehead with a groan low and pathetic. Why did he have to be a blundering idiot? His hands pushed to cover his face as he leaned into his palms, why did he have to studder and mess up his- he suddenly pulled back his hands when, something soft and thick layer over his shoulders after his cloak was removed. It was produced warmth that made his body shudder involuntarily as it combatted the cold. He opened his eyes to be met with your face, kind and smiling, “I know that the rain may affect you more because of your fur and encumber you, so- I wanted to be of some help!” Your little jazz hands almost made the elktaur huff out a breathy laugh at your cuteness. It was all too good, like a surreal dream that he knew would have to end shortly soon. You made him feel less lonely, as you sat beside him and brought by the book you were reading earlier to read to him- the closeness flustered him as he stammered and tried to discourage you but you didn’t relent. You gently let your arm link around his waist, watching as he tensed more and more when you pulled him in flush against your side. His hand pressed to your shoulder, “But, you— you’ll get cold too, I wouldn’t want for you to hug me like this..” His words carried two different meanings, yet you wouldn’t know about it til much later, “Like what?” Your voice snapped him to attention as a blush bloomed to his face when he watches the way you set down your book again and then feels your hand press against his cheek.
“You’re perfect.”
His heart near exploded at those words, feeling it pound hard against his chest that it felt loud enough to hear in his ears, turning his head away with a shake of it. “You don’t know how wrong you are,” he softly mumbled and thankfully you didn’t hear it explicitly. The elktaur sighed, feeling his head grow heavy on his shoulders as he leaned forward, curling his legs closer to his body so he could fit more of himself under the blanket and glared at his hind legs. If he was a human, he could easily pull all of himself under the blanket and cuddle you but no. As an Elktaur, he can’t do that. His self detrimental and hateful thoughts directed all to himself and the body he was wrongfully put in- his train of thought had blanked hearing your voice again. The elktaur turned his head back to you, listening as you read the story to him and he felt a new fond warmth delve deep into his chest. The way words flowed easily on your tongue and through his ears was calming, he felt sweet undertones threaded in, you made him forget yet again why he was so hateful in his mind. How could a human he just met do that? His ears pulled back, eyes lowered to be half lidded, that was the magic of humans and how kind and amazing they could be. He reached out, taking your hand again gingerly, watching as you perk up before smiling and continuing to read.
Maybe, he should thank the storm for letting him meet you.
elktaur x reader when?
