AU LORE :

At 36, Calico Jack was the captain of the REVENGE (formerly Charles Vanes's ship, which he mutinied and took over).

At 37, he was captured by the Royal British Navy and thrown in "pirate prison" (idk what it was called irl). On his first day, he was whipped/beaten by the guards, something they did to every pirate on their first day.

[I imagine this part like a scene in a movie] As he lays there in the dirt, he's nearly unconscious, but feels someone grab him. They drag him over to their cell and get someone to help her clean his new wounds. It hurts, hence the drawing, and it depicts that scene.

[She is one of the big bosses of the pirate prisoners, so holds authority with them]

The person who helped him was Anne Bonny, whom he fell in love with. They are together in the prison for a few months before escaping and spending the rest of that year pirating on the high seas.

At 38, he's again caught and this time sentenced to death instead of imprisonment. Anne Bonny is able to convince the court to pardon her because she was pregnant (Calico Jack's son/Kwazii's father). Anne Bonny leaves him for Mary Read, who was also pardoned. (Irl, there was no evidence of them being in a relationship ship, but in Octo-universe, they are now. Lesbian cats.)

He's able to escape his hanging and flees, where he hides for two more years (until 40 years old, and authorities wound his left eye), then a storm shipwrecks him and he ends up in the Amazon for another 15 years.

my final graphic design thesis project from about this time last year! i made a sleeve for a diy vinyl record (track featured by my friend aria @everlastingwife ^_^). this process was so much fun to experiment with!! on my first attempt, i tried to 3d print a record using a 3d model i generated from the wav file. this did not work because i didn't have access to any printers with a fine enough resolution — all of the grooves holding the audio information totally melted. for my second try, i used a subtractive process instead and badgered my department into buying the gakken toy record maker, which was essentially a tiny record lathe. the audio quality was total ass but it worked much better and was playable! lot of trial and error involved but i'm overall very satisfied with the final outcome :-] hope to make some cd mixtapes now that i no longer have access to that little lathe.

Waaah! 💛 That's awesome because I really want to write it. Chapter one is currently being edited and I think I might be happy enough with it tomorrow. In the meantime, here is a little, little bit from the beginning:

Law makes himself look ahead again, focusing on the snow-covered trees lining the steep cliffs. One of those trees will be the right one. The one with the climbing rope. He remembers the shape of it—he thinks. Hopes.

Three thundering cannon blasts steal his attention and he almost trips and falls over his own feet, even though the din of battle has been going on ever since he climbed out of hiding. The fight has been taken far out towards open sea but it burns so bright against the night that it’s impossible to miss. Two Navy warships flanking the familiar silhouette of the ship he thought of as home, not long ago at all. There’s rapid gunfire coming from off the deck, all sound delayed but sharply ringing between the islands, seeming as if it’s coming from everywhere at once. 

The ships are all heading away though, moving fast. That’s good. Very good.

Law finds the right tree almost by accident—by running straight into it while looking over his shoulder again, but he’s not in a state to dwell on things like dumb luck, divine intervention or what the odds are. He sweeps a boot through the snow, finding the rope laid out and dangling over the edge of the cliff, right where Cora-san left it. 

“We’re going to have to make a quick escape after we get it, so you need to be ready, Law,” he had said while concealing their tracks and Law had just hummed into his feathers, barely listening. The plan was mostly a blur to him then, filtered through fever and cold wind, but Cora-san sounded so sure. It was going to be okay and they were going to make it out. Together.

Law looks at the rope now, following the length of it with his eyes to where it ends, swaying above their rescue boat—familiar and small, far below. The water in the hidden cove is black, crested by white teeth where it crashes against the cliffs. Never has anything looked more likely to swallow him whole.
