I'm starting to wonder why I even bother to worry about a lot of things rn. I texted my manager an hour ago when I woke up to explain what we got done last night in case no one had said, because I thought that he was at work today and I didn't want him to be sitting wondering what did and didn't get done. I thought I was being helpful but he's just fucking left me on read after we worked our asses off all night??? Like okay he might not be at work today but would it kill him to just say that? I'm having a bit of a battle with myself in my head bc on one hand my anxious brain is freaking out like omg he probably hates me after this weekend bc Friday I was just mega anxious and feeling really down and I just kept apologising and I was working really slowly bc I felt so shit and that was the best I could do, Saturday I went in specifically to apologise for being so annoying and awful to be around and we all laughed about it bc he had told everyone I would probably do exactly that but he seemed.. not very willing to actually say everything was okay no matter how many times I asked (which I know is my problem and not his but he knows me and knows I just need explicit reassurance that he does not hate me and is not pissed at me and idk he didn't seem sincere but that's more than likely just my anxiety talking. And then I just texted him today and maybe I was overstepping bc it's not really my responsibility to tell him what got done, I was just there to work the shift and maybe he thinks I'm trying to be a kiss-ass bc he mentioned the promotion which I'm not, I just thought it might be helpful to update him. But then the other half of my brain is like wtf why is he being such a dick, why am I busting my ass for this man like yeah he's really really lovely most of the time and this changeover has been so stressful and I get that but he's kind of taking it out on his staff which isn't like him so then I worry like is he okay is he more stressed than he lets on and then I get back to my anxious brain of 'oh no I'm adding more unnecessary stress by being anxious myself and annoying him with my need for reaasurance which he does not owe me'. BUT then like. He's at work with me in the morning so I can literally say to him tomorrow 'sorry if you weren't at work yesterday and I hope I didn't overstep, I just didn't know if it might be helpful for me to let you know what we got done. Are you alright and what can I do today that would be helpful' and everything will be okay and I do know that, so I just need to relax and enjoy my day off today, but damn I'm finding it difficult lmao.
apologies for the long rant, I'm mostly posting this bc I ran out of space in my written journal but I want to document my thought process and that i am actually considering the more logical side of the situation that he's probably just not at work and also trying to enjoy a day off, hence not replying to texts about work. Go me for acknowledging that 👍🏻
#i sound like a crazy person#but im proud of myself for challenging the dumb anxiety conclusions my brain likes to jump to#go me for considering more realistic explanations#progress#recovery#anxiety#mental health#personal#work

7 Common Mistakes Made by Fitness Businesses
Once people decide they want professional fitness help, they’re spoiled for choice. Take my local shops for example - there are four gyms/fitness studios within 100m of each other! The flipside of this is that people also tend to lose motivation or forget about their fitness goals quite quickly.
What does this mean for you? Well, unless you're one of the mega fitness brands, you've got to work your butt off to attract and convert new clients. Then you've got to pay close attention to other aspects of your business or you may not be able to retain those clients, or profit.
I’m not a personal trainer and have never run a gym, I just want to share the results of surveys/interviews I’ve done with close to 100 fitness professionals (both clients and non-clients).
Here’s the shortlist.
Things to avoid when you’re running a gym or personal training studio
These common mistakes are here to help you. As you read, just remember:
- Everyone makes some or all of these mistakes at some point.
- It's valuable to pinpoint problems so you can set a path for continuous improvement.
- These mistakes are VERY inter-related. If you fix one thing it will improve other areas too.
1. Working too hard/long hours
Many of us start a business for a better lifestyle but, sadly, it is much more common for business owners to be working an unhealthy number of hours each week.
If you've started a fitness business and you're feeling overworked and underpaid you need to know that you're not alone - you're in the majority. This ultra-competitive industry requires that you put yourself out there on social media and everywhere else possible so that you have a good shot at success. This means failure is very public. Maybe that's a good thing? Some of us work better under pressure.
If you don't have anyone helping you with your clients, your day is probably something like this....
- Get up at 4:20am for the early sessions
- Work your butt off during the day to get things done
- Take breaks whenever you have a few moments
- Try to look energetic for the evening sessions
- Get home late
- Post and comment on social media
- Then, just when you try to sit down and relax you get client messages or new enquiries via Messenger. You can't ignore those!
Sound familiar? This 'mistake' is actually a symptom of other root causes mentioned below. I think everyone starts out working like this out of necessity. It's manageable in the beginning due to the excitement of it all - but it's not sustainable.
2. Not having a well defined target market
How do you compete with 24-hour gyms or massive franchises that have a seemingly endless marketing budget? The answer may be to narrow your focus on a target market, or to specialise/niche.
If you haven't yet niched it might be because you're worried that specialising in something may deter other 'would be' clients. Well it might deter a few. On the other hand, if someone is looking for a new fitness solution, what is it that would currently attract them to your business rather than a super well known and trusted brand?
Being unique and promoting your point of difference has three advantages:
1) It tends to attract the sort of people you want
2) You’re more likely to provide an amazing service that will keep them with you
3) They’re more likely to spread the word
Is there something about your business that people would actively search for and when they find you they would think: This is it!
3. Poor financial management
Fitness businesses aren't alone on this one. Poor financial management is the leading cause of small business failure.
The thing about the fitness industry, is that most trainers or instructors are working to build up their client base and can't really spare time or money to manage the finances properly. A lot of people spend more time and money on marketing to increase revenue - but don't stick your head in the sand. It's important to know your numbers even if they’re pretty small at the moment. Knowing your numbers may provide extra motivation for improvement.
If you already have the finances sorted when big changes happen, such as registering for GST or suddenly making a bigger profit, then you won’t be caught off guard. The tax office doesn't accept ignorance as an excuse and having a tax debt makes running a business much harder.
4. Not creating systems
"Let systems run the business..." Michael Gerber
But who has time to develop systems when they're starting a business? Well, when you consider that 94% of problems with a business are systems driven and only 6% due to people (Deming), it makes sense to work on the 94%.
Here’s the good news: you already have systems for your business, even if you haven't documented them. You just need to get them out of your head.
Years ago, I used to type up static manuals for business processes but that's all changed. Now we create an online directory of every process and fill each module with video and screenshots or easy-to-update text.
This seemingly boring task seems way more interesting when you consider the big benefits:
- Improved quality
- Improved client satisfaction
- Improved client retention
- Increased referrals
- A more professional perception
- Increased perceived value and higher fees
- Optimised marketing
- Optimised sales
- Optimised training
- Optimised management
- Improved team satisfaction
- A higher business valuation
- The prospect of franchising
I'll stop there but, honestly, the implementation and continuous improvement of systems is what separates the leaders from the pack.
5. Going it alone
"... and let people run the systems" Michael Gerber, again
Most fitness businesses are started by one or two people who are running all the sessions themselves and trying to balance all other business tasks in their down time. This is OK in the very beginning but then it's common to get stuck in 'no man's land'.
You'll become too busy to do anything properly and your business will suffer, not to mention your mental health.
There are some tasks that could actually be done better by someone else for a cost that makes sense. Consider things like cleaning, bookkeeping, social media management…
Then, imagine finding an amazing trainer/instructor who could handle 12 sessions a week. Your time could then be spent on business improvements that are much more valuable than running sessions. If you're worried about what your clients would think, don't worry, you can focus on retention activities that may make them even happier than they were before.
The business is so much more valuable to a buyer once the separation of owner and operations is complete. In fact, it's nearly impossible to sell if you haven't done this to some extent.
And one more thing about going it alone... wouldn't you like to have a holiday?
6. Thinking you can't afford or not ready for the software you need
Software can seem expensive but there are so many benefits.
I have noticed how those who make the leap and fork out for good software suddenly find themselves signing up more clients. They become busier with more clients and couldn't imagine coping without the software.
On the other hand, those who hold off seem to be constantly struggling.
Why is that? Maybe it's because the software gives a more professional appearance, which attracts customers.
Here are a few reasons it can make life easier for you and your clients.
Good software efficiently manages payments. This gives you a consistent and predictable cash flow. The majority of fitness clients actually find this better than having to have the right cash or purchase 10 packs through a weird system. Direct debit is set and forget - for them and you.
It also efficiently manages bookings or scheduling. Clear communication around schedules is vital for your business. Why wouldn’t you optimise that?
This sort of software can help you grow. Maybe it's the retention work you can do with the software that gives the competitive edge. Or perhaps it’s the marketing capabilities they include if you integrate them with marketing apps.
However it happens for you, after some growth (if not from the start) you'll need good accounting software - not only to help you stay out of financial trouble but also to know your numbers, set targets and monitor your performance.
“That which is measured, improves”
Peter Drucker
7. Thinking you're too busy to spend time on service and satisfaction
To be honest, there were tonnes of "being too busy to..." type mistakes in the survey responses, but there was a lot of overlap so I've narrowed it down to the three key areas.
I've also changed the title of the mistake from "being too busy to" to "thinking you're too busy too". My reason for this is that these things are so important in the fitness industry that if you don't attend to them regularly they will come back to bite you.
They're not just “nice to haves” - they're critical.
If you spend hours on social media each day, that's great, but it may be more effective to to spare a bit of time on:
Improving your services (REFERRALS, CLIENT ATTRACTION AND RETENTION) You're probably already continuously educating yourself on health, fitness and nutrition. That learning is an amazing building block for new services and the continuous improvement of existing services. Service improvement is a leading determinant for referrals, client attraction and retention.
Checking customer satisfaction (REFERRALS, RETENTION) Trying to sense the vibe of customer satisfaction probably isn't good enough. You're probably too busy to have one-on-one chats with everybody, so consider using your software to periodically send out a three question survey. This could highlight problem areas fast, shows changes over time, and let you know the winning elements that shouldn't be changed.
Checking team satisfaction (TEAM RETENTION, CLIENT SATISFACTION, REFERRALS) How’s the team doing? This should also be systematically checked. Even if you've got bulletproof hiring and training systems, when a team member leaves it's a major disruption, and a black hole for money and your time.
Keeping your team highly engaged and proud of the business should reduce team turnover and mitigates the risk of them leaving on bad terms. You need to look after your crew so well that they don't start looking for work elsewhere or, worse still, decide to build up their own client base in direct competition with you.
Some of the fitness people who helped with this article had ways of lessening the impact of these 7 mistakes through additional revenue streams like online coaching, online training courses and product sales. I'd love to hear about your fitness business if it's immune to any of these 7 mistakes. I’d also love to know I've missed anything so get in touch in the comments section to add your experiences.

12 november 2018
13:22: Sitting in music library right now, trying to “brainstorm,” trying to “keep things fresh,” or something. Nearing 50,000 words on this project, and feeling like I need to do something with it in order to keep it from “going stale,” not on the level of y’all the readers, but even for, like, myself, doing this, I think. Not that I’m having a bad time doing this, or that I’m starting to get bored with it, or anything, the only reason I didn’t update the liveblog for the past three days were personal matters that kept me occupied for most of each day, so, like, it was practicality, not lack of interest that “kept me at bay.” At the same time I never like just continuing to do something the same way just because it’s what you used to do, and I’m having, like, an itching feeling about the liveblog, like, “gotta do something new with it, gotta ‘switch it up’ a bit.” It’s naturally evolved, I know, in terms of the structure and the tone and the prose since first starting, which is good, I like the natural progression of it, but I want to play with it a bit, like, push the form “to its limits,” or something. I feel silly writing that, hahahah.
Really dislike days when I “don’t update” the liveblog, even if it’s for valid reasons, still feels like I need to have some kind of “plan of action” in case that happens. Consistency seems like a prerequisite, or else liveblogging as a form loses meaning/power/effectiveness?? Crap now I’m going off on a liveblog theory tangent, theorizing, I’m theorizing, folks, like a big giant moron. Let me try to parse this out, let me try to, uh, “illustrate in text” where I think I can start bending the form:
-Have been doing timestamps to-the-minute as a way of structuring the blog, with, sometimes, “mega updates” that are more cohesive paragraphs, foregoing timestamps, when I’ve been lazy/unable to jot time down on phone note, or when unable to get to a computer to update blog for long periods
-Enjoy this notion of the timestamp, gives the whole thing a “real” feeling to it, knowing, exactly, what the person is doing, and when, but need to find a way to make it more precise??
-Maybe make a private Twitter or Mastodon account and post what I’m doing, that way Twitter/Mastodon can automatically log the timestamp and I don’t have to keep adding it into my phone’s note document, and I can, “with ease,” log things with a more exact level of detail?
-This doesn’t really change the form, or anything, of what I’m doing, though, want to incorporate something “new and exciting” so I’m not just going off of what I’ve grown comfortable with, need to keep “pushing myself”
-Okay think, George, think, what would be challenging, now that you’re used to logging each minute of being awake, what would make it harder, like, leveling up, the next stage in the game, the next boss hehe
Oh wait I think I know, think I have something for you, let me “serve you up” with this, let me “butter your bread,” guys. Boy George has got something, you remember MySpace, when you could do things like “listening to” and put music?? Okay so here’s my idea, I think it’ll be mutually fun to read and to write, I’m gonna write a paragraph or so about the music album/song/thing that I’m most listening to during each day, since this usually changes by day, and also because I’m listening to music for most of the time that I’m conscious. Actually, wait, wait, let’s calculate, let’s do some calculations:
-awake for, like, 16 hours each day? -subtract ~2 hours lectures per day -subtract ~4-5 hours piano practice per day ~subtract any time i’m with people i like, unsure what this metric is, heavily depends on day
Okay for like 9/16 of the hours that I’m conscious I’m going to be listening to music, and I have, like, a LOT to say about music, like obnoxiously so. So this is good, I can include an insertion about the day’s “soundtrack,” OH OH THAT’S GREAT okay that’s what I’m going to call it, I’m going to call this section “Soundtrack of the Day” hahaha, okay, nice, nice. Will do this section later today, needs to be “late enough in the day” where I really know what the soundtrack that fits my mood of the day is. That way the Soundtrack of the Day can give insight into how I’m doing, and it can also just be fun to write about music in itself. Also going to do that timestamp thing with a private Mastodon/Twitter account that only I can access so that it’s a lot easier to quickly input what I’m doing and have it automatically timestamped, been thinking about doing this for weeks now but never “implemented” it.
Okay, okay, there’s the Liveblog 2.0 update, we are now on phase two of liveblog, folks, here are the “patch notes”:
-fixed timestamp logging system, switching from google keep to mastodon
-added “soundtrack of the day” section, should provide further insight into each day’s liveblog, should also be fun to read from a musically critical perspective
-additional resources added towards maintaining liveblog, even minimally, on days when time constraints make longer updating practically impossible; new timestamp logging system should aid in this, as i can just mirror all the tweets/toots onto liveblog without elaboration, but at least they’ll be there
Sick it’s 13:44 now, I’m going to head up to the practice rooms and “see what I can do” for a bit. Oh crap, I almost forgot, hahaahah, here’s what I did today: -woke at 11h right before needing to run out of door for piano pedagogy class -hurriedly brushed, didn’t do hair, threw on clothes, ran out door -stopped for organic low-sugar energy drink, 100mg caffeine, en route to campus -went to class -went to tim hortons, got jelly donut, large coffee with one milk -brought tim hortons to music library
Fairly straightforward day so far, I’m still not sure, exactly, where my mood is, but I’m feeling well re: liveblog 2.0 changes. Don’t know if there are enough changes to constitute marking this as, like, a completely new version, instead of just a point release, but whatever I’m not about to fricken start labeling liveblog updates/“patches,” like, 1.2 or 1.02, just sticking with whole numbers lmao.
Also don’t have too much of a plan today, my obligations today are “scarce,” there are not many of them, no, not many at all, nope. Will practice and “see where my heart leads me,” I think, yeah. Feeling very “neutral” today, feeling like a murky, amorphous, grey sac.

3D Printing Mega-Post (with links!)
Being a member of the maker community means I am surrounded by people who are totally in love with 3D printing. There’s no other group with whom I can have a 30 minute discussion about bed adhesion, lol. While the cosplay community is also generally supportive of the technique, every now and then I will come across somebody who thinks it is akin to cheating. Most recently it happened on a blog I really enjoy. When I read posts like that, I can only shake my head and assume that person must not really understand all the work that goes into 3D printing. Even in the best case scenario where you find a ready-to-print model and own a printer large enough to accommodate it, there is still tons of work that goes into taking a raw print from... well, a raw state to something beautiful. Hence I have decided to type up an overview of 3D printing; what it is, how it works, and all the steps it takes to create a cosplay prop. This is not a detailed tutorial; rather, it’s a high level scope of all the steps. Without further ado, here’s 3D Printing 101!
*12/20/17: Updated with new information on the latest printing technology plus even MORE links!
How does 3D printing work?
3D printing is an additive manufacturing process used to create three-dimensional objects; think of it as the opposite of sculpting where you start with a block of material and cut parts away (subtractive manufacturing). There are actually many types of 3D printing technology, but the most common for hobbyists by far is Fused Deposition Modeling—or FDM for short. In plain English, FDM means the printer head is essentially a hot glue gun that “draws” the cross-section of a model, building it up one thin layer at a time. After tens or hundreds of layers, ta-dah! You have a 3D object! You can check out this link for more info on other types of 3D printing.
The workflow for printing looks like this: find/make a 3D model, optimize that model for printing, convert it to G-code with a slicer, and send it to the printer. Once printing is complete, you need to assemble any separate parts, fill major gaps, fill/prime/sand the surface, and then paint. If any of those terms are confusing, don’t worry! I will explain them all.
Finding, Modifying, or Making a Model
Sourcing models is one of the topics where I see, “Cheater!” start to sneak in. There is a misconception that you can find just about any model you want, download, and hit print. This can be true depending on what you’re trying to build; popular cosplays like Iron Man, Halo, and Star Wars do have a plethora of models available for free, and many are already optimized for printing. Once you get outside well known characters, however, it gets much more challenging. If someone has 3D printed components in their cosplay, it’s never safe to assume the person just downloaded them.
Downloading Models
It’s always worth hunting around for the files you need even if the character isn’t well known. Even if you want to build everything from scratch, it is nice to see how someone else tackled the same challenge. There are a couple websites I like for searching for printable models:
Thingiverse: Run by Makerbot, Thingiverse is a huge collection of models designed specifically for 3D printing and all of them are free! This is where I always start my search for 3D printing files. Most come with some degree of instruction and suggested optimal print settings.
GrabCAD: I don’t use this site as frequently for costuming since the focus is engineering, but it’s very possible to find some cosplay goodies there. Other than scaling, most models should be ready to print.
SketchFab: While this was originally a place to share 3D models, some users also make theirs available. If you need a file for printing, be sure to search through the Downloadable section. (and even if you can't download the file, a 3D reference beats 2D refs any day!)
When selecting a model, try to find something that specifies it was made for 3D printing. Otherwise, you may need to do some manual cleanup and that can be challenging. Just FYI, game models are never ready to be printed but if you want to start with them, Source Film Maker has hundreds to select from. it’s also worth Googling to see if anyone has offered ripped models for free, but be aware that these should NOT be used for profit. Steriolythography (or .STL for short) and Wavefront (.OBJ) are the two most common file types, but get an STL if you can. OBJs will often come with texture files (.mtl), but those are not needed for printing. Aim for highest resolution you can find unless you want the low-poly look. Trust me, you don’t want to be filling in faceted planes with heaps of Bondo later.
There are a few products and processes that allow for multi color printing, but for the most part FDM machines are limited to one or two colors. If you are bound and determined to have multiple hues, you can check out Prusa’s new Multi-material upgrade, the new Da Vinci Color, or the Palatte Filament Splicer. I suspect that multi color printing is going to be one of the next major features to hit hobby printers, but for the time being most methods are either rudimentary or really expensive. It can also be fun to print with multiple materials such as combining rigid and flexible pieces, but that is best reserved for a dual extruding printer. When it comes to cosplay, I would either suggest printing in the object’s final color or preparing to paint. Even if you choose to paint, try and pick a filament color that will make sense if it is revealed through wear and tear.
Modifying Models
If something wasn’t specifically made for FDM, how do you know if it’s printable? Most commercial 3D modeling or CAD software have tools to check and correct issues with models—sometimes automatically. Unfortunately the easy-to-use, open source options in this area are a little barren but there are still ways to do it. Here are some free options for both checking and repairing mesh issues:
MakePrintable is an online paid service, but it will let you repair a set number of models per month for free. In my experience, this is best for basic issues but it couldn’t get any easier.
Microsoft STL Repair: Similar to MakePrintable, but unlimited and free. The downside is that you have zero control in the process, and files need to be opened with Microsoft’s free 3D Builder (from there you can export as an STL).
MeshMixer: An Autodesk product that has a number of capabilities for manipulating meshes. It’s more complex than MakePrintable and Microsoft 3D printing, but you have way more options.
Meshlab: Ah, Meshlab. This program has been around for a long time, and in many ways it is incredibly capable. Unfortunately, it’s also somewhat unstable and has bad documentation, so tutorials are hard to find.
Blender: A popular open source 3D modeling program, Blender also has a 3D printing add-on with some mesh analysis tools. This is the most robust option I have tried, but Blender has a steep learning curve and it can be intimidating for newbies.
Making Models
There is a good chance that you won’t be able to find ready-to-print files, so you might need to heavily mod or even make your own from scratch. Unfortunately, you will need to jump into 3D modeling software to make this happen. There are two major categories of software types: engineering (computer assisted drafting, or CAD for short) and artistic. In a nutshell, CAD is usually meant for objects (cars, wrenches, buildings, etc) and offers tight control over dimensions, surfaces, and shapes. Artistic software can be used for just about anything from trees to characters to spaceships, but it can be more challenging to make precise mechanical objects. I use both depending on what I need to create. There are actually a ton of free 3D modeling tools, so I will list the ones I have experience with and can recommend.
TinkerCAD: This is probably one of the most popular free CAD programs, and for good reason. It’s browser-based and very intuitive to use, thus it has become popular in schools. The entire thing revolves around building objects out of primitives, so if you need something complex it might take a little creativity to get there. TinkerCAD also has its own library of downloadable objects and it can export items for 3D printing (or even send them to a printing service!).
Google Sketchup: Available in both free and paid versions, SketchUp is a lot more complex than TinkerCAD but still very approachable. For some reason, it would drive my professors nuts when anyone used this software for homework. Be sure to check out the hefty list of extensions as they can significantly increase the program’s capabilities.
Autodesk Fusion 360: I will admit that I haven’t used this one very much, but it has been getting very popular very quickly. Fusion 360 is a fully-featured, professional CAD program meant for industry use, but it is available for free to students, startups, and hobbyists. If you want to grab the bull by the horns and work with maximum potential, get this software. It can be intimidating for someone who has never set foot in CAD before, but it is one of the most approachable fully featured CAD suites I have ever seen.
Sculptris: And now for something completely different! Sculptris is the baby brother of Z-brush, an industry standard software for digital sculpting. It’s actually very capable, and if you need to model something organic or CAD just isn’t making sense, give Sculptris a whirl.
MeshMixer: MeshMixer’s site calls itself, “a Swiss Army Knife for 3D meshes,” and that’s pretty accurate. It has some CAD capabilities mixed in with artistic tools and a few unique things to boot. It’s reasonably easy to use, although there could be more tutorial support in my opinion.
Blender: Ah, good ole’ Blender. Completely free now and forever (unlike many Autodesk programs), it’s the most capable and robust open source software I have ever used. Blender is definitely on the artistic side although it has add-ons that make CAD a little less painful. The major downside is the interface; simply put, Blender is incredibly unintuitive. Thankfully, Youtube has tons of high quality tutorials to get you started.
Slicing
Once you finally have a printable model in your possession, it’s time to send it to a 3D printer. If you are using a 3D printing service, congratulations! You can send them your model and call it a day. The rest of us will need to use a Slicer. Remember how the printer moves a hot glue gun around to draw a shape? Well, the computer needs to tell the printer head where to move, how fast to move there, and when to start and stop drawing. It uses a language called G-code to do this. A slicer’s job is to convert a 3D model into G-code so the printer knows what to do.
I use a free slicer called Cura from Ultimaker, but Slic3r and Repetier Host are popular options too (although more advanced). If you want ultimate control, cutting edge features, and don’t mind paying for it, Simplify 3D is considered the best slicer on the market. Cura is my slicer of choice due to its friendly interface. In the photo above, you can see how it has made layers out of a model (hence the name “slicer”).
The first thing to do will be properly scaling your print. Cura assumes your units are millimeters by default, so you may need to convert to your original modeling unit (inches, my my case). Unless you are printing a small prop or have a very large printer, your parts will probably be too big to fit on the print bed. If this is the case, return to your modeling software and split into smaller pieces.
When it comes to 3d printers, you get what you pay for. The more expensive models ($1500+) offer the closest thing you can get to plug-and-play experience, but even they will have failed prints, clogged extruders, and other common issues every now and then. The rest will need some degree of hand-holding. It took me about a week to get my $200 Monoprice Select Mini printing to the best of its ability, and that involved a lot of fiddling in Cura and 18 test prints. Spend some time optimizing your software for the fastest, highest quality prints; you’ll be grateful you did once you get to the sanding phase.
Update: After 10 months of regular, reliable performance, the board on my Monoprice Mini has died. At $160, I definitely got my money’s worth and other users have had theirs much longer. I am upgrading to a Prusa i3 MK3 kit, but I would still recommend the Select Mini v2 as a good gateway machine.
Printing
With your slicer ready to export G-Code, now is the time to set up your printer! A 3D printer’s “ink” is spools of plastic string called filament. There is a variety of plastics to choose from, but Polylactic Acid (PLA) and Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) are the most common. PLA is cheap, readily available in many colors, and is made from plant starch. For most people, it’s the go-to choice but it is not the strongest material. ABS can provide better structural integrity, but it’s a little more finicky to print and the fumes are noxious and require ventilation. This link has a good summary on various types of filament on the market.
If you search Amazon or Google for 3D printing filament, you will get approximately 82376483456978938 results. Be sure that you are searching for the proper diameter filament; most printers are 1.75mm, but some are 2.85-3.0mm. Reliable brands of PLA that I have worked with are Hatchbox, Matterhackers, ProtoPasta, and ColorFabb. Be wary of no-name brands off places like Ebay or Amazon; not all filaments are created equally and I have definitely wasted money trying to be thrifty on Amazon.
With your filament loaded in the printer, it can be a good idea to extrude some and make sure everything is working properly. Next, verify you set the proper export settings in the slicing software. Different plastics need different speeds and temperatures, and often the packaging will give you a good suggestion. When all is ready, slice the model and send the G-code to your printer!
I always stick around to watch the first few layers of my print because most mistakes happen at that point. Bed adhesion in particular can be troublesome. My solution of choice for PLA is a layer of blue painter’s tape with a light misting of hair spray. Others have used glue sticks, but that didn’t work well for me. If you notice any problems, pause immediately and try to fix the issue. A small clog can turn into a major problem if plastic goops all over your extruder.
When the print is done, it can be tempting to pull the model off the bed but have a little patience! The plastic can warp while it is still warm, plus your printer will still be hot. Let it cool down slightly, then pop it off the bed.
Surfacing
Now comes the tedious part! First of all, remove any supports (or if you have a dual extruding printer, dissolve support filament) with pliers. Depending on the support type, a box knife or X-acto can be handy. I have also heard that deburring tools are handy for this. Next, assemble separate parts with glue. CA or epoxy are good choices, or you can get fancy with friction welding. If you printed with ABS, acetone can help glue pieces together and even smooth your model.
Next you will need to fill any major gaps such as those found along seams or where errors may have occurred in the print. Bondo Glazing and Spot Putty is a popular option for large holes and epoxy can be used as well. You can also use wood filler although I would reserve this for parts that will not be subject to a lot of handing or strain as it can be a little brittle.
Now you have to do something about all those layers.
Your options are sanding, smoothing, or a combination of the two. In the past I have wet sanded the plastic starting from 120, 220, and 400 grit wetdry sand paper. The “wet dry” part is important because PLA will heat quickly from friction and then you have to wait for it to cool again. If I wanted the plastic to show, then I would take it to 1000 grit or even a bit higher. 220 is the minimum for a matte appearance and slightly rough feel whereas 1000 starts to approach injection molded plastic. Bear in mind that dark filaments will show scratches and need sanding at finer grits to look clean. If you intend to paint, 400 grit paper is high enough. Then you will need to spray your model with primer. Allow to thoroughly dry (no longer cold to the touch) and sand with 600 or 800 grit paper. Reapply primer and continue sanding until you are satisfied with the surface. I have found 3 or 4 coats to be sufficient. Paint will hide very few defects, so you can’t take shortcuts with this step.
You can circumvent some obnoxious sanding by filling the layers first. Automotive filler primer works wonderfully although the fumes are terrible and it will need be to used in a well-ventilated area. Filler primer is much thicker than normal primer and with enough coats, it will fill in all those grooves. I found that 3-4 light coats built up a good base to start sanding, and then another 3 coats with sanding between each application gave an excellent finish. This might sound tedious (and it is, to be honest) but the primer sands much easier than PLA. I was satisfied with the finish 220 grit sandpaper provided.
I have heard that CA glue is also good for filling grooves, and Smooth-On makes a self-leveling product called XTC-3D that you paint over your model. I haven’t tried either of these, but they get good feedback from others. Finally, if you have printed in ABS you can try vapor smoothing your part; just be careful playing with acetone, and don’t do it too long or you’ll melt your piece.
Now with all that said, my experience with finishing 3D prints was with the intention of creating a production-quality model (aka something that looked like you bought brand new it from the store). Every print needed to be practically flawless when viewed at close range. For cosplay, this is unnecessary. Nobody is going to hyper-analyse your work from inches away; rather, you can rely on the 10 foot rule. Also, weathering will hide many defects
Focus your efforts on pieces that will show the most. For Soldier 76, this means I will be spending many hours making his mask smooth and pristine, but I’m not even going to paint the brackets on his boots.
Painting
Now you are on to the last step! Unless you wish to control texture through brush strokes, I always recommend spray painting or airbrushing. Rattle cans are available in a myriad of colors these days, but if you have an airbrush they are handy for detailed work. I had a professor who wouldn’t let a can of Rustoleum in his classroom and demanded we use Krylon, so I guess you should also use Krylon? The artists I know who use spray paint swear by the Montana brand, and they have a huge range of colors to select from.
Anyway, all your spray painting should be done outside or in an area with plenty of ventilation. I always wear a dust mask--not because I’m worried about paint fumes (dust masks don’t stop fumes anyway)--but because I don’t want to breath in teeny paint particles. Even if paint is non-toxic, it doesn’t belong in your lungs. I also like to tape down a huge backdrop so I don’t get any over-spray surprises. Your coats of paint should be incredibly light, almost like dusting the model with pigment. It will take many coats, but the slow buildup guarantees even application. I promise the effort is worth it, plus thin coats of paint dry quickly anyway.
Sealing
Last step! I have always used rattle can clear coats to seal my models. This step should not be skipped because your paint job can be marred very easily, but the sealer will help protect it. Always, always, always use the same brand of sealant as your paint or test on scraps first. I cannot reiterate this enough; not all products will get along together, and nothing ruins your week (or month) quite like destroying a detailed paint job. If your model will be going through a lot of wear and tear, you may consider coating it in clear resin for durability.
Conclusion
So as you can see, there is a LOT more work to 3D printing besides downloading and hitting print. I didn’t even go into detail and the post is huge. Any of these topics will have more information if you search on Youtube or Google, plus my Ask is always open. I hope this helps somebody!

Hey guys! Got my submission finished early this week. This is both my submission for @thebookjumper Olicity Hiatus Fic-A-Thon for the Prompt: Malfunction and the next installment in my "Here or There" verse. Thanks for reading and I would love to hear what you think!
Summary: Thea's having some iPhone problems and she comes to Felicity for help...because why wouldn't she? And if they catch lunch and get to know each other in the process? All the better!
Rating: T
Disclaimer: I own NOTHING!
Here goes...
It wasn't like a date or anything. Not like a date date or anything anyway. That's what Felicity kept telling herself. Sure, Oliver and Sara had apparently ended things (cue the internal happy dance), but that had nothing to do with this. And Felicity had nothing to do with said ending of things. She'd been perfectly happy for them. If they brought each other comfort, gave each other some shred of peace in their painful lives, who was she to judge just how selfish and twisted the whole situation was? Felicity was, admittedly, no Laurel fan even though she barely knew the woman personally. If Oliver and Sara wanted to dump salt on an obviously still gaping wound while the woman was already struggling with grief, guilt, and addiction issues...well that was their despicable decision to make, wasn't it? It was none of Felicity's business and she'd stayed nice and out of it.
But anyway...SO not a date! It was just a marathon. A friendly marathon between friends. There was no reason to stress and over-analyze every single little thing. No reason to type up a detailed two page itinerary...and she was totally going to delete that...in a minute.
“Felicity?”
Felicity jumped and immediately reached up to downsize the word document filling her screen. She painted on her professional smile and looked toward the door. Then she frowned confused. “Thea...I mean, Miss Queen? Why was Thea Queen standing before her desk...and talking to her? It wasn't unheard of for Thea to visit Oliver at the office, but she never stopped to speak to his blonde EA. She barreled straight ahead through to Oliver. Felicity was beneath the younger Queen's notice...or she had been...before today. Felicity was honestly a little stunned that she even knew her name.
The blonde genius looked toward Oliver's empty office and realization dawned. “OH! I'm sorry, Miss Queen,” she told the smiling brunette, “but Oliver's currently in a meeting with a VP from Accounting. They're in the conference room and he won't be back until this afternoon. He's been dreading it all week. Can I take a message for you?”
“Oh no,” Thea waved away her concern and that mega-watt smile didn't dim one bit, “I'm actually here to see you.” She walked around to the side of the desk and hopped up to sit on the edge. Wearing a beautiful navy jacket, a slinky cream top, skinny jeans, and matching cream heels, Thea somehow looked both fashionable and lethal. Her eyes never left Felicity. “You are Felicity, right? Is it okay if I call you Felicity?
The blonde blinked...and gulped. Why was Thea Queen smiling at her? Why was she speaking to her? Why was she here to see her? None of the Queens, save Oliver, had any use for Felicity. In fact, she had it on good authority that Moira Queen hated her guts...and wished her serious bodily harm. Was this a trap? This had to be a trap, right? Some scheme to prove she was incompetent and deserved to be fired and then physically ejected and permanently exiled from Starling City? Oh great google! Where was Oliver when she needed him? Oliver needed to save Felicity from his pit bull of a little sister! She did not sign up for this!
When she realized Thea was still waiting on a response, Felicity gave a quick nod. The brunette smiled even wider if that was possible. “Great! So...I've got this problem.” She reached into the purse slung over her shoulder and pulled out a phone. She held it up to the blonde. “I'm having an iPhone malfunction and I heard you were the girl to see.”
Felicity blinked. “Have you also heard of the Apple Store?”
Thea pursed her lips. “Yes, but I was hoping you might be able to help me out...seeing as you work for my brother and all.”
“I'm his EA,” Felicity told her.
Thea cocked her head to the side and lifted her brows. “Aren't you like a genius?”
“How do you...”
Thea shrugged. “Ollie said something.” She looked to the side and started kicking her feet back and forth. “Anyway, so I was loading this new update on my phone and things started going totally wonky. Some of my apps disappeared, and then my code didn't work, and then it wouldn't read my thumb,” she held up said thumb in example, “and I'm almost positive if I have to set it back to factory defaults it's going to delete all my pictures of Roy.” She turned big sad eyes on Felicity and pouted like a true drama queen...pun intended. “And I never saved them to the cloud and I can never get those memories back, you know? Is there any way you could find it in your heart to help me?”
Felicity gaped at the girl a little stunned.
Thea shrugged again and sighed. “Okay, so I might be having a few problems.”
And Felicity really didn't know what to say. She still wasn't entirely convinced this wasn't a trap, but this was Thea! Oliver's Thea! And if she could help the girl, then shouldn't she? It wouldn't be the first time Felicity had wrestled with a cantankerous iPhone. They could be stubborn boogers when they wanted to. And Felicity liked Thea even if the other girl didn't know her or like her in return. She liked Roy, too. Wasn't helping Thea out the least she could do?
Her mind made up, Felicity finally nodded. “I can't make any promises, but I'll look at it for you. Do you want to pick it back up this afternoon? Or maybe Oliver can bring it back to you?”
“Oh no,” Thea waved her hand in the air, “since you're being nice enough to help me and all, I thought I could treat you to lunch. You can look at it at the restaurant and we can get to know each other in the process.” She smiled widely again.
“You,” Felicity said, “you really don't have to do that, Thea. I don't mind helping you.”
“I want to,” Thea said. “It'll be fun.”
“But...I'm at work,” Felicity said.
“You get a lunch, right?” Thea cocked a brow. She pointed toward the clock on the wall. “It's about lunchtime now.”
Felicity gaped at her. “But...your brother...”
“Is going to be in that meeting until later this afternoon, right?” Thea said.
Felicity whimpered as she ran out of excuses.
“Great!” Thea clapped. She hopped off the desk and spun back to face the blonde. “Let's go!”
Thirty minutes later both women were seated in a booth in a trendy new sandwich shop in downtown Starling. Honestly Felicity would have preferred Big Belly, but her sandwich was okay and Thea insisted on paying for the meal. Felicity was earning her keep by tackling the issues with Thea's phone.
Bypassing the key code hadn't taken long but now Felicity was running a diagnostic of the software. Somehow Thea had lost all but the standard permanent apps and utilities. Thankfully all her photos and videos seemed fine and the remaining software wasn't corrupted, but Felicity couldn't figure out why she'd lost the content to begin with...or why her key code would change.
Normally Felicity would write it off as a glitch, but this was the Queens they were talking about. What if someone had tried to hack Thea's phone? What if they sent her spyware and she'd inadvertently given them a backdoor into her personal information? Personal ID, credit and debit accounts could all be connected to your phone these days. Not only that, but with the lingering threat of Slade...there were just too many dangerous possibilities to ignore them all.
Felicity dug in her bag and pulled out her personal tablet. She used Thea's charger and connected the phone and tablet so she could take a closer look at the software. She hummed under her breath and bit her lip as she settled into her zone.
“So,” Thea drawled, “how did you and my brother meet again?”
“Uh,” Felicity shrugged but never looked up as she continued to dig through the lines of code, “he spilled a latte on his laptop. I worked in IT then.”
Thea snorted. “Sounds about right. Ollie is notoriously bad with technology.”
“He's not that bad,” Felicity defended him automatically. “Oliver lets people underestimate him. He uses it to his advantage.”
“That's surprisingly insightful,” Thea noted. “You know my brother pretty well, huh?”
Felicity looked up and smiled. “I think I do. I know I didn't know him before the island, but I think in some ways that's a good thing.”
The younger woman seemed to be studying Felicity. “You don't judge him for his past,” she realized.
“I never knew Ollie,” Felicity explained, “and I think Oliver appreciated that he had a clean slate with me. He didn't have to meet any expectations. He didn't have to worry about disappointing me.”
Thea nodded and her expression was thoughtful. “That's why he's close with Mr. Diggle too, isn't it? You both see him for who he is and not who he was.”
“I think so,” Felicity told her gently, “at least partially anyway.” She paused, but then decided to continue. She really wanted Thea to have a better understanding of her brother. “But John's also a soldier. He's lived through...some pretty horrible things. I think Oliver can relate to that.”
Thea winced and looked down. Felicity returned to her work on Thea's phone and allowed the younger woman to collect herself. The blonde was almost through double checking the code when Thea finally spoke up again. “So, why haven't you and Ollie ever dated then? Since you understand him so well and all.”
Felicity's head snapped back up and she stared at Thea wide-eyed. “I...uh...what?”
Thea grinned and her eyes sparkled. “You do find him attractive, right? So what's stopping you?”
“I'm me and he's Oliver!” Felicity told her. “We are two totally un-mixy things!” She took in the amusement in Thea's eyes and huffed. “Your brother does not see me that way, Thea. We're just friends...and...and he's my boss! That would be totally inappropriate.” She paused and then thought of something else. “Also? He just got out of a relationship. He needs time to heal.”
Thea snorted and rolled her eyes. “First of all, that thing with Sara? Totally not a relationship. More like a train wreck...a repeat train wreck.” The younger woman leaned forward against the table and closer to Felicity. “And secondly? There is absolutely no way my brother only sees you as a friend while you run around wearing those dresses.” She indicated the bright purple dress with cutouts that Felicity was currently wearing. “Ollie may have changed but he hasn't changed THAT much.”
Felicity gulped and looked desperately back down at Thea's phone. She needed to be back at work...like NOW!
When the elevator doors opened, Oliver was leaning over her desk frowning. “Felicity, where've you been? Rogers wants those projections you worked up for the project with S.T.A.R. Labs. I can't find...” he finally looked up and immediately zeroed in on Thea. His eyes narrowed and his mouth tensed. “Thea...”
Thea smiled at him sweetly. “Hi, Ollie! Sorry, I kinda stole your gurl. I needed tech support,” she waved her phone at him, “and Felicity here was nice enough to help me out. I treated her to lunch for her trouble.”
Felicity frowned and walked briskly toward her desk. “Thea's software update messed up her phone.” She leaned over and typed in the commands to pull up the report Oliver needed. She hit print and pointed toward the printer as it came to life. “That should be everything you need for Rogers.” She poked her finger into Oliver's chest. “And don't let him question the numbers. I triple checked and my math is right.”
“I'm sure,” Oliver nodded but he was still staring down his sister. “Your phone didn't seem to be giving you any problems this morning at breakfast.”
Thea shrugged. “I installed the update later. No big, Felicity fixed it for me,” she smiled again at the blonde, “and we got a chance to know each other in the process.” She focused back on her brother and canted her head to the side. “You're always saying I need new friends.”
“That's not exactly what I meant,” Oliver muttered.
Now Felicity frowned up at him. “You don't want me to be friends with your sister?”
Oliver winced and turned her way. “That's not what I meant, either.” He studied the blonde with affectionate eyes. “I think Thea could definitely benefit from a positive and supportive female friend, Felicity. Anyone would be lucky to count you as their friend.”
Felicity's stomach fluttered and she smiled at him. “Thank you.”
“Awesome!” Thea cut in. She skipped forward to stand across the desk from them. “Then we're definitely on for manis and pedis, right?” she asked Felicity.
Oliver looked back toward his sister suspiciously, but Felicity nodded. “Sure. You have my number.”
“Yes,” Thea grinned at Oliver as she nodded, “yes, I do.” She motioned between her brother and the blonde. “I'll let you two get back to work now. I've wasted enough of your very valuable time.” She spun on her heels and headed back toward the elevators. “But I'll text you later, Felicity. We'll set up the details for this weekend.”
“Okay,” Felicity nodded. She still felt a little overwhelmed by Thea's sheer presence and exuberant personality, but she liked the girl and she wanted to know her better. Thea seemed to be giving her a chance and Felicity was determined to take it. Besides, just knowing how much Oliver loved and adored his sister, Felicity couldn't help but feel affection for the younger woman.
Felicity didn't understand, however, why Oliver suddenly looked so worried. She cocked her head to the side and looked up at him. “What?”
“I...just...” Oliver lifted a hand and ran it over the top of his head and down to the back of his neck. “Did Thea...say anything...”
“About what?” Felicity frowned as she studied his face. Was he, was Oliver Queen, actually blushing?
Oliver squeezed his eyes shut and shook his head. “Nothing...nothing.” He blew out a breath and motioned toward the printer. “I should really get that report and head back to the meeting.”
Felicity nodded. “Okay.”
The two of them maneuvered around until Oliver could move over to the printer and Felicity could slip into her chair behind her desk. The blonde genius had just spun back to focus on her monitor and her work when Oliver cleared his throat and drew her attention back to him. She looked up to find him grinning at her. “By the way?”
She blinked. “Yes?”
“The itinerary for our marathon?” He cocked one brow. “I'm impressed. Very thorough.” He stayed long enough to watch the bright red blush rise from Felicity's chest to cover her neck and cheeks. Then he winked at her, turned, and left.
Felicity groaned and thumped her head down into her hands. “I swear, these Queens are going to be the death of me!”
Thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed the story!

Bitcoin Gold Recent Updates; Who Won't Support Them?
Gold is ALL THE RAGE these days... but maybe not in the way you might be thinking of. Not physical gold you silly mustache fans, but Bitcoin Gold! Also, when I say "rage", I kinda mean rage... If you have not heard of the contested hard fork coming up on October 25th called Bitcoin Gold, I will walk you through the basics as well as give the most recent updates for those already familiar. PLUS, I cover how my favorite cryptocurrency wallet will handle the situation and what that says about this fork. What Is Bitcoin Gold? Bitcoin Gold is the name of the new currency intended to fork off from the Bitcoin main blockchain on October 25th. If you don't know what a "Fork" is, then check out this recent article I posted about them in general. Not all forks result in a new currency, but this is an aggressive change to Bitcoin and not everyone agrees. Their are not a lot of details on "how" Bitcoin Gold will do the things they want to do, but the main reason for this fork is to make Bitcoin mineable using GPU's instead of very expensive and power hungry ASIC's machines. They claim this is to keep Bitcoin as decentralized as possible, because as it stands it is too expensive and resource intensive for individuals to mine Bitcoin so the majority of Bitcoin mining is done by large pools or mega corporate miners. This leaves the average guy out and the Bitcoin Gold team feels that their new currency is the solution, but is it really a solution? Latest Bitcoin Gold Updates
Bitcoin Gold (BTG) as a solution to this specific mining decentralization problem has been a hot debate this last month and not all are convinced. Since announcing their plans, there was VERY little information provided by the Bitcoin Gold team and speculation ran wild. Unlike Bitcoin Cash (a previous hard fork of Bitcoin I wrote about earlier this year), the Bitcoin Gold team had no solid plan provided on how they were going to accomplish any of their goals, no information on the development team, and a website that was pretty much blank. While there are a lot of skeptics of this project that are just calling it a "cash grab", the Bitcoin Gold team finally put out a press release a day or so before also updating their website with some actual information. The press release is fairly lengthy, and they basically attempt to refute the negative claims that people have been circulating. You can download and read the entire PDF version of the press release here: Maybe a document like this has helped to quel those that were quite missinformed, but it still does not provide a complete roadmap for their project nor does it provide the type of technical information that other developers (think wallets, exchanges, etc) a way to deal with Bitcoin Gold on their applications. While the updates to their official website, http://btcgpu.org (not even https!), do give a little more information, its not much. They now list a little about the intended features, a comparison to Bitcoin and others, a few photos of their team, a very basic FAQ (although it does talk about the mining aspect), and a short list of those that fully support the project, most of which are mining-centric. Support Is Lacking From my perspective, the support for this project is lacking. The overall idea behind the fork is, at heart, a good one, but I think it has been executed badly. While doing research I found that many companies and dev teams will not support Bitcoin Gold like they may have with Bitcoin Cash, and the BTG team is not making it easier for them to do so.
Recently I reached out to the support team of my favorite wallet, Exodus, about the Bitcoin Gold fork and if they planned to support it the same way they have with Bitcoin Cash as they JUST added Bitcoin Cash & Ethereum Classic to their stable of fully supported coins. I must admit, I initially could not find any info on Bitcoin Gold on their website or a search online, but after a quick message to their support team all was clarified! I got an almost immediate response from Doug Barbieri, Exodus' Community Support Engineer (love that title!), and he gave me the break down and also pointed me to the FAQ article already on their site that I overlooked which explained everything in detail (thanks Doug!). Here is the full body of that post below, but you can also check out the page on their site here. "Just like the Bitcoin Cash fork, there is another fork coming October 25th. One thing to understand is that it is not the Segwit 2x upgrade to the Bitcoin Network (that comes next month in November), but instead, it is a clone of the main Bitcoin blockchain that will result in a 1:1 split of your Bitcoin funds. So if you have 1 Bitcoin you will receive 1 Bitcoin Gold. The goal of Bitcoin Gold is to make it possible for anyone with GPU graphics cards to mine Bitcoin Gold just using their home computer, which they believe will make mining more democratic. This is opposed to big companies that mine Bitcoin using computers called ASICs that costs thousands of dollars each, and because of the prohibitive costs of mining Bitcoin, this pools hashing power into a select group of companies. The only problem with Bitcoin Gold is that it is still in active development, and its current state does not provide the necessary resources for Exodus to provide a seamless experience for our users. Therefore, we will not support Bitcoin Gold like we did Bitcoin Cash. We will be concentrating our efforts on the upcoming SegWit2X fork in November and will know more information as the date gets closer. As long as you hold the private key for your BTC, you will be able to claim your Bitcoin Gold by exporting the private key and importing it into the dedicated Bitcoin Gold wallet when it becomes available." As you can see, the Exodus team does not plan to support this fork like they did with Bitcoin Cash (although if your coins are in an Exodus wallet you can still use your private keys to get your Bitcoin Gold in an official BTG wallet), but instead will be focusing their efforts on the upcoming SegWit2x fork planned for sometime in November. Where I Stand I am standing by the Exodus team 100% and I think they are making the right decision on this one. I will be leaving my Bitcoin in my Exodus wallet through the October 25th snapshot, but I will still claim my free Bitcoin Gold as soon as possible and probably just dump it for more Bitcoin or my Altcoin of choice. This is just MY plan, do your own research and come up with a plan that works for you and your investments. Hopefully I have shed some light on this subject and those that are Exodus fans or Bitcoin Gold fans have the information they need to go forth and 'Stache that crypto! I Have A 'Stache Of Gold!

some helpful ap review guides!
So I’m taking a couple of AP classes in high school, and I’ve collected a ton of aid docs to help me through the year.
I’ve compiled them all into this one post so you can click on a specific class’ aid doc to help you. I’m still updating some of the tips and tricks, and I will add more as I take more AP classes. [update, May 2017: I’m officially done with high school, so I won’t be adding any more high school AP aid documents, but if people want me to add stuff for other classes, I’ll try!]
IF YOU DON’T HAVE MICROSOFT WORD, tell me so I can put some of the docs on google doc instead.
The more updated version is on my own blog: eekal.tumblr.com/help
More info under the cut
General Tips: It’s extremely recommended that you take the AP exams from previous years. They never repeat questions, but they will 100% repeat concepts and test question styles that they did before. For instance, the WHAP exam will have the same-styled multiple choice questions that question the relationships of civilizations and effects of major events. Always answer every multiple choice question. They take the same amount of points off if you leave it blank and get it wrong. I think they don’t take off for guesses anymore, but it’s always better to guess than leave it blank.

AP World History [took in 2015-6]
My own notes that I hope to finish one day (lmao, I only have like 3 chapters done) : https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zG5qouoO0UQE9_eN0e96c9a73lvYcwPolvTr7UaCISA/edit?usp=sharing // It’s kind of too specific, and covers too much of one chapter. Would not recommend seriously.
I love these docs; this is like the only thing my teacher has ever done for my class: Useful Websites Maps 2 Know Gigantic Study Material
Chapter outlines for every chapter [using Traditions & Encounters: 5th Edition]: Outlines
Tips: The most helpful thing I’ve learned over the year is that the AP exam at the end is mostly about relationships between cultures/civilizations and the effects of various events. For example, the test won’t ask you the specifics about Columbus’s expedition, but it will ask you what happened because of it [ie smallpox + columbian exchange]. Memorize the big events of each section/unit/period like wars and significant trade routes, so when the test essay asks you what the effects were, you can just pull them out. Be sure to memorize certain photos like what the Hagia Sophia looked like, Mansa Musa, Alexander the Great, architect types, trade routes, what empires looked like in their prime, etc.
They always ask about the biggest changes in each time period:
Mongols
Byzantine Empire
Rome/Han
Salt/Gold Trade Route
Silk Roads
Trans-Saharan Trade Routes
The Great Schism / the start of Protestantism
French / American / Haitian Revolutions
et cetera
Remember, this tip might not work for you as I took the exam in 2016, and I heard that the CollegeBoard is going to change it in the coming years. Moreover, your teacher might present information in a different way for their finals and tests.
AP Calculus AB [took in 2015-6]
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-D5e4luKNSQkFXBIoOhytmeHraUxpBc2xPq3dJ3K9kE/edit?usp=sharing
This one explains past free response AND multiple choice AP tests from like 1997 to 2015: http://www.askmrcalculus.com/index.html
Tips: Possibly the easiest AP exam. If you know what you’re doing and practiced the past free responses, you should be good to go. It’s really handy to make a notebook with like steps to show how to do each type of problem. Study and fill this notebook out throughout the year, and you’ll be more than ready to take the exam in May.
AP Biology [took in 2015-6]
Honestly, these Enduring Understanding pdfs really helped me review at the end of the year, especially if I didn’t understand a certain topic. It even has book chapters to go back to if I REALLY didn’t know a single thing.
Big Idea 1.A: Change in the genetic makeup over time is evolution. (pdf)
Big idea 1.B: Organisms are linked by lines of descent from common ancestry. (doc)
Big Idea 1.C: Life continues to evolve in a changing environment. (pdf)
Big Idea 1.D: The origin of living systems is explained by natural processes. (pdf)
Big Idea 2.A: Growth, reproduction, and maintenance of the organization of living systems require free energy and matter. (pdf)
Big Idea 2.B: Growth, reproduction, and dynamic homeostasis require that cells create and maintain internal environments that are different from their external environments. (pdf)
Big Idea 2.C: Organisms use feedback mechanisms to regulate growth, reproduction, and to maintain dynamic homeostasis. (pdf)
Big Idea 2.D: Growth and dynamic homeostasis of a biological system are influenced by changes in the system’s environment. (pdf)
Big Idea 2.E: Many biological processes involved in growth, reproduction, and dynamic homeostasis include temporal regulation and coordination. (pdf)
Big Idea 3.A: Heritable information provides for continuity of life. (pdf)
Big Idea 3.B: Expression of genetic information involves cellular and molecular mechanisms. (pdf)
Big Idea 3.C: The processing of genetic information is imperfect and is a source of genetic variation. (pdf)
Big Idea 3.D: Cells communicate by generating, transmitting, and receiving chemical signals. (pdf)
Big Idea 3.E: Transmission of information results in changes within and between biological systems. (pdf)
Big Idea 4.A: The subcomponents of biological molecules and their sequence determine the properties of the molecule. (pdf)
Big Idea 4.B: Competition and cooperation are important aspects of biological systems. (pdf)
Detailed Lecture Notes!! I used these instead of reading that giant textbook [no diagrams or pictures though…]: Assorted by chapter
Tips: There are no tips to this course. Simply memorize the notes using flashcards and mindmaps. I printed and highlighted the lecture notes during class and went over them again in my own time + looked in the textbook and copied down the diagrams and pictures. Then I rewrote the most important topics with at least one example in each category on a mindmap/flashcard and memorized them before a quiz/test/AP exam. This course is extremely content heavy. The AP exam multiple choice was easy in a sense if you understand the concepts, but the essays were harder in that you had to state examples and explain why things were happening. REMEMBER that there’s a formula sheet on the front of your test booklet [I forgot that and got 2 questions wrong ㅠㅠ]
AP Statistics [took in 2015-6]
Inference Cheat Sheets !
I also have a notebook full of notes that I would scan in, but I would have to rip apart my notebook. However, I will rip it apart in a heartbeat if someone needed it.
Tips: This was a really easy AP exam and class, partially thanks to my wonderful teacher, but if you are having trouble with the concepts and math, look up youtube videos! My friends in different classes did that, and they were perfectly fine on the AP exam.
AP United States History [took in 2016-7]
Content: Bill of Rights / 27 Constitutional Amendments // lol. pretty helpful tbh if you forgot all of your amendments at the end of the year APUSH Review // Teacher recommended me this website; never really used it, though
http://wikibenn.pbworks.com/w/page/78594635/APUSH%20Review APUSH Topics separated by periods // Useful for the periodization topic and as a really good review like right before your test 2015 MC Practice exam
Hooray for huge books: Short outlines [not mine] // also works as chapter notes More short outlines [not mine. download the doc to view the full document] // also works as chapter notes Long outlines [not mine] // more useful for reviewing for tests/ap exam More long outlines [not mine] // more useful for reviewing for tests/ap exam
Essays: 2015 Sample Essays // I basically printed out some essays that I had problems with and analyzed them to see what I would need to include in my essay. For instance, for the periodization topic, I printed out the first essay and highlighted the examples/topics/organization in the essay to see what I would need. General long essay help Periodization formatting X / example // I didn’t really use this, but it seemed helpful Writing in APUSH review // seems more intensive than the others
Cramming: Very intensive APUSH review Kinda long APUSH review Brief review of APUSH Important Supreme Court cases // I’d argue that you don’t even need half of these, but Important Treaties // I’d argue that you don’t even need half of these, but Important Legislation The Magic years // Incredibly important years/dates Political parties over the years of America Summaries of all of the POTUS’s
AP Spanish [took in 2016-7]
I, unfortunately, did not take the AP exam for this class, and also I suck booty at spanish ㅠㅠ
AP Physics C [took in 2016-7]
Um, I basically died during the exam, but…
It's extremely recommended that you study for this exam at least 1 month prior, but if you’re like me and chose to wait until the very last 24 hours to study, use these tools to mega cram.
Physics C Equation sheet // Check with this to see if the equation you’re studying is given on the exam or it’s written differently
USE YOUTUBE VIDEOS TO REVIEW! Very helpful in getting the content across and knowing what to do for some situations. Flipping Physics // I love this man? I watched all of his ~16 minute review videos to get the basics of the topics down, but he does forget some important equations/concepts. Don’t worry, I included them at the bottom of this section. I didn’t watch his simple harmonics review video because of the lack of time, so I don’t know what he missed on that video. Dan Fullerton // What a hero. My friend recommended him, so I don’t know the faults of his review videos.
Really simple review of the equations // A little bit too simple in my opinion. This is for if you’re 2 hours away from the exam. Physics review with practice questions // I don’t know if the person writing this website ever finished it, and I’ve only ever looked at the kinematics review, so I can’t really recommend this one over the others. Really simple equations review // Again, really lacking on the concepts. More reviews // I haven’t checked this one out, but it was in my bookmarks. More intensive review // This one looks really intensive, and I appreciate Mr. B for these powerpoints. I should’ve used this one, but I didn’t ㅠㅠ Really helpful review packet (especially the applications of forces) // I mainly used this for the applications of forces pages One month physics C study plan (which I did not have enough time for) // lol. 2D Motion Review 1D Motion Review
Practice exams: 2012 MC Test 1998 MC / FRQ Test General practice questions
What Flipping Physics forgot: Kinematics/ Certain equations that you can derive for max height / time of flight Velocity and Acceleration relationships- +v, -a / -v, -a / v = 0, a =/= 0 Concept questions for kinematics Momentum/ Types of collisions and associated equations- Elastic equations / Inelastic equations 2D collisions Ice skater-related concept Various moments of inertia for different objects Centripetal motion/ Banked turns- With friction / Without friction , Going from rev/min to rad/s Gravitons / Roller coasters / FBD for speed bumps and top/bottom of a loop on a roller coaster Gravitational/ Binary stars with circular orbits- concepts Orbital velocity formula Single object in ovular orbit and associated equations Binary star physics Basic binary star with circular orbit concept // Unfortunately, I can’t find much on these besides my in-class notes, so message me if you need those. Here’s what I’m talking about for the first one, though. Perihelion vs. aphelion concepts- 1 / Momentum in gravitational unit- 1 / 2 // There’s also more on this, but they’re in my notes
Tips: Lmaoooooo. That curve is your friend tho. As long as you get a 50%, you’ll get a 5.
Everyone, good luck on your AP exams! I’ll probably only update this on my actual blog page to add more review sheets for more subjects later on
[pssstt, i'd appreciate it a lot if you bought something off this list if this helped you!!]

Musicians guide to promoting new music
Do you have a plan for your music release but you don’t know how to promote it?
Planning a music release can be a very intimidating thing when you haven’t done it before. Even when you have, getting eyes on your music isn’t as easy as google searching cold contacts and begging them to listen to you.
It actually doesn’t work that way. PR takes time and effort to execute well. Sadly, many artists believe that PR is done by blasting a press release out to the top 100+ music sites that they Googled. This never works, because PR placements start with people you already know and have a relationship with. You can’t expect to get results with cold contacts you get from a stock list or google search. It’s a waste of your time and efforts. Especially if you have to buy your press list.
As a member of the press, I can assure you that I have never discovered an artist from a mass mailing. Even if they get through my spam filters, I never read them because I never signed up to receive the information and I don’t know the credibility of the person mailing me without permission.
On those two reasons and so many more, cold mass mailings don’t offer value to me as a press agent nor do I consider them an effective .
A quality list must be developed over time. I always say that if you don’t know each person on your list by name and qualifications, don’t bother emailing them.
Instead, I recommend working with a qualified team that can help you promote your music professionally. A team that gets proven and time tested results. Track record is everything in this business.
We have been promoting artists for 10 years, you can Read the FEEDBACK here: https://www.avaliveradio.info/feedback
Now let’s go down a solid list of strategy that you’ll need to know for a successful Music Release.
Pre-release Guide:
Here’s my break down for releasing new music so you don’t miss a single opportunity. What we noticed that separates the best artists and teams who get results vs. those who are floundering is planning. Follow our lead and you’ll be gaining exposure and seeing results like a pro.
Register with a Performing Rights Organization. to collect your royalties you’ll need to sign with a both a Performing Rights Organization (“PRO” for short) as well as SoundExchange. The three options in the U.S. for PRO’s are ASCAP, SESAC, and BMI. For live royalties, BMI and ASCAP both offer portals to collect royalties from playing live. Once your songs are registered on the PRO database, you log in and enter any dates you have performed those songs, where they were performed, and which songs. The PRO companies payout quarterly so be sure to enter the performances soon after they are through, otherwise, you could miss a deadline! You also have to register with SoundExchange, which focuses on royalties for your recording (mechanical rights), while your Performing Rights Organization focuses on royalties for your song (performance rights).
** If you do not yet have your music streaming across all platforms, you can use a service like Tunecore to distribute your music to all digital stores and streaming services in preparation of our package. I recommend making sure you will be released on Spotify, iTunes and google play at the least for best use of our marketing packages and for the success of your release.
When to release? Releasing on a Monday or Friday gives popular artists the best chance to maximize their chart potential. Billboard tracks sales from Friday to Thursday each week, so a song or album released on a Friday has the advantage of being tracked for all seven days of the weekly cycle. Try releasing something new at least once or twice a month for optimal growth. You Get Paid More often and have more music for your new fans to listen to. This helps you generate alot more streaming revenue from every mega fan. If you are willing to put in the time and effort, releasing singles is a great strategy when it’s done consistently and often.
Gather Images: Hopefully you filled up your cell phone with good quality images that can be used on your social media and in your music promotions with us here at AVA Live Radio. We recommend filling a drop box or google photo file with at least 10 high quality studio photos that help to track your journey to this new release. They can be full color, or black and white images. They can also be a mix of in studio pictures, playing your instrument, official art work for the release, play date posters, band photos, or even photos of the band hanging out together. Get creative and think like a music fan. What kind of pictures help to document this time and tell the story through visuals. What kind of picture will draw someones eye to the fact that your a musician and you are living that life.
Fill in our New Single Release form When you get on board to work with our marketing team, make sure you fill in your form. The New Single Release form will help you pull in the information about your single that will best represent you on promotion days. You only have to fill this in once, so do a great job. The more details we have to work with, the better your visual story and digital foot print will turn out. We want this information to work for you past the release date, so everything you can tell us about bringing this single to the public will be helpful. Try to tell a story. Mention details on writing, recording, mixing, mastering, being in the studio, etc. All these details can be really exciting for your fans to discover. Taking them on a behind-the-scenes journey of this music release is a great way to form a stronger bond with your current and growing base. If you have a website, a blog or even an instagram page, you could tell this story with great visuals that we can use to help people walk that journey with you. It’s important that we map this journey out to the press as well. This way we can ensure that your music makes a solid impression on the people that matter most. When documenting this information for your fans, send updates on how the recording, mixing and mastering is going using videos and photos via your socials, plus capture longer-form stories for Instagram Stories and for your newsletter.
Up to 1 month before your release, engage with your following on milestones through multiple distribution routes. This can include: Your own newsletter, website, blog, instagram, Facebook, youtube, linkedin, etc. Share versions of the artwork you are considering and song titles by polling your fans and holding contests to select what cover or title to go with. Have your fans weigh in on photos, graphics and get them involved with the process. The goal of all this activity is to get people excited so they are engaging and thinking about your progress. When you order one of our packages, we can use the pre-release time to support your content and start telling more people about you through social media. Our artists have found it very helpful to have our assistance during these days prior to any release.
Focus on Increasing Your Audience : If you have been recording new music you may have taken your eye off of your fan sites but it’s time to get back in the swing. You need to grow your social and email list during these pre-release time. This takes some thought so get your team on board. Use my Social media Tune up list to get your pages up to date. I have s section filled with ideas. If you have not kept up consistently find your friends and people you admire (bloggers, other artists, venues, local spots you like to hang out in, etc.) on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook and friend away! This will increase your audience because many of the people you follow will follow you back. Also, start reaching out to people in your inbox and outbox and get them on your list (remember it’s illegal to just sign people up, so do this with integrity and ask each person to stay in touch through your newsletter). Your newsletter is the place where you will be able to monetize so, don’t skip this step. Also look back through all your previous post comments and try to reactivate all those conversations. It helps to feed the algorithm some targeted followers to show your future posts to. This also reminds those top fans that you are still around. These are the people who are most likely to play and share your new music.
Prep Your Website and social skins: Change the artwork on the landing page to announce the new music and b sure to add those same images to all your social media banners and thumbnails. The key here is to accomplish a unified look for everything public. Canva is a great free resource to create art at the right size for all your social media pages. Change your bio to announce the release on all social pages.
Update Spotify:
Header and Profile Photo: Keep these up to date and in line with the rest of your social profiles.
Image Gallery: Choose images most aligned with your brand and recent music.
Social Media Links: Add links to your socials.
Update your spotify bio> With 1500 characters to share with your fans, you can update this whenever it makes sense for you. Keep your bio updated, include shows, notable press, and new singles.
Add an Artist’s Pick: You can designate a song, album, or playlist as the “Artist’s Pick.” This will appear at the top of your profile with a note from you. You can add a custom image to your Pick or share tour dates if preferred.
Release Week Checklist:
Make sure your New Single Release form is filled in and completed in full at least 1 week prior to your preferred launch date. Pick a package and get started: here
Start a Spotify playlist that includes your new single along with 9 other songs that are more popular (both indie and mainstream) and closely related to your theme, genre. Think of songs that come from artists with similar fan bases to your own. You can create additional playlists as well focused on themes such as wedding, romance, travel wanderlust & adventure, an activity, or event.
Update your fans with a countdown posting a great new photo or video clip each day for 7-10 days leading up to your release. Include this on social media, send a newsletter with that story at 10 days in, 5 days in, and 24 hours before the launch.
Plan your content calendar. Write down what things you are planning to post this next 7-14 days. It’s so helpful to have a plan down. Consistency is key to seeing post growth and social potential. You should have already started activating your pages during the pre-release week but it’s never too late. Include video clips, live stream, photos, play dates, and links to upcoming reviews and articles in your content calendar. I love using hootsuite to set up posts ahead of time but facebook also has a creator studio that allows you to set up posts for instagram and facebook ahead of time.
Release Day: Set aside a few hours to support your own release on those first few hours it goes live. You will want to get the release into as many hands as possible even if that requires personal messages, live streams, links and newsletters. Also don’t forget to send your release to your most active fans and ask them to share it for you. Remind them that your first goal is to get to 5k streams and you need their help to meet that milestone. Getting people on board with a target goal, is a great way to activate your fan base.
Social Media: Create a post for all your social media pages that offers a streaming link. I recommend using a landing page on your own website that offers all your links from spotify to apple. I use http://wavve.link/avaliveradio to include links to multiple pages. Create a release tile and post with the album / single art and say “out now”. Instagram: Create an Instagram Story video and post by 9 am. Go to Instagram Live and talk about the fact that the music is available and ask for fan feedback. Facebook: Post a status update announcing your release, and pin it to the top as a timeline feature. Go to Facebook Live and talk about the fact that the music is available and ask for fan feedback. Twitter: tweet out your release announcement. Pin the tweet to the top of your profile page Go to Hootesuit and program the tweets for 1-3 times a day for the next 10 days. YouTube: Customize the top banner, profile picture to announce the new music. Add your wavve link and mention of the release to the “About” section. Upload cover art and have track streaming in the background. Newsletter: Send out a newsletter announcement to your mailing list.
Now that you have a plan and strategy for releasing new music, come sign up for a promotion and let’s start making a difference.

Sometimes, great looking portfolio themes don’t offer WooCommerce and WooCommerce themes don’t have an attractive enough portfolio to engage with your readers. With Arnold, you definitely get both. This theme is modern, flat in style and creative. The design is natively responsive, it’s compatible with all the major page builder plugins, including Gutenberg and I think it’s a theme you can grow with. It’s proven to be popular, well supported and it allows you to deliver a great user experience as well.

Hermes
Hermes is a fantastic WooCommerce WordPress theme with a clean, minimal design and plenty of flexibility and functionality. This theme is clean, creative and powerful, the colors and layout can be adjusted to fit what your website needs to be. The developer includes multiple homepage layouts, product pages and more, it’s great for businesses, news, corporate websites, but it’s best for eCommerce. This theme is responsive, SEO optimized and flexible. With a user-friendly design, this theme works well without any sort of coding knowledge, so you’re going to be able to establish a site quickly and efficiently. Speaking of fast, the one click demo data import allows your site to be online within moments of installing your website. Visual Composer is included, as is Revolution Slider and Mega Main Menu. Those plugins have combined valie of over $60, which can save you a bunch of money if you’re looking to add that functionality. All things considered, this theme is a really great value and super simple to use.

Marketify
If you’ve been looking for a great digital marketplace theme, you have to take a look at Marketify. Marketify was one of the first themes for WordPress to offer the ability to create a multi-vendor marketplace and it’s still among the very best themes of it’s kind. The design is clear, simple and easy to navigate. Whether you’re an admin, a seller or a buyer, the theme just works really, really well and it’s easy to use too. They’ve recently updated this theme to a v2.0, which is completely responsive, adds support for Easy Digital Downloads and they’ve updated security too, which is absolutely critical when you’re setting up a marketplace site.

Zelle Pro
Zelle Pro is a clean, simple WordPress theme with a really unique design, it’s a one page theme. A lot of times, people don’t consider one page themes, but there are probably more websites that could use a one page theme than there are pages that actually do take advantage of a one page theme. One of the benefits is load speeds. Once the page is loaded up, that’s it, it’s over. There’s no constant loading from page to page, you can display everything from a blog to portfolio, even an eCommerce shop, all on one page. It’s a great way to make a website really work, assuming you want a simple, minimal style site. And let’s face it, if you’re looking at this theme collection, that’s probably why you’re here.

There are a ton of different demo styles included, some of them pretty niche specific. There’s one called, Splash Food. We’ve got even more food blog magazine themes. Check them out here. A video magazine WordPress theme called Splash Movie. Here’s a sports magazine demo. Nice use of a background image in this one. If you’d like to see more WordPress magazine themes, check out this collection. Splash Relationship is a relationship magazine theme. Splash pets magazine, could work great for a pet store too. And all of the Splash Magazine theme demo sites are WooCommerce ready for maximizing your income if you happen to have products you want to sell. Create has always been a powerful on flexible theme, but now it’s been redesigned from the ground up. Create 2.0 is built using the page builder plugin from site origin. Ultra
This is an incredibly powerful theme, it’s called Ultra and it was created by Themify, one of my favorite theme developers around. This theme allows you to take full control of your themes design from the header to the footer and everything in between. This is a must have WordPress theme for web developers, though it’s perfect for beginners as well, the flexibility is there to ensure that you get a website that looks just the way you want to with all the features that you want. There are several really interesting aspects of this WooCommerce powered theme, the countdown clock, progress bar, counters and contact forms, not to mention built-in timelines and a cool typewriter effect. There are professional quality sliders and dozens of different layouts to help you get started quickly. This theme has smart layout options for any taste, five different single post layouts and 6 header background options as well. There is preset typography but you can control that yourself through the admin panel if you so choose. This is one of the most powerful WooCommerce themes around and well worth your time to take a look at.

Shoppe
One of the best things about WooCommerce is its ability to allow you to become Your Own Boss. When confronted by all of the different challenges of running your own business, it’s important to have as many tools at your disposal that can help ease the burden and make things a little bit simpler. I think that this WordPress theme can be one of those tools. Shoppe is a Simple and Clean Ecommerce theme that can really get the job done of making your content stand out without being too intrusive. It’s got a simple design that is professional and attractive, but the features are just as powerful as any. Shoppe allows you to build a professional e-commerce site and just a few minutes, it comes equipped with themify Builder, a handy and Powerful drag-and-drop page builder, not to mention plenty of other eCommerce features like Ajax cart, wish lists, quick look light boxes, Ajax quick search and plenty of shop layout options. Notio
Want a fun theme with grid layout and easy to grasp, minimalist style to make a really memorable first impression on the folks who come to your website? Yeah? Me too! Well, Notio is a theme that might be a fit for what you need. Notio is a high end portfolio theme which also allows for WooCommerce sales of any kind of products, from digitally downloaded files to stuff you normally find in a brick and mortar store. Notio is easy to use too, simple enough for beginners but fluid and dynamic enough for expert web designers. I think you’ll find that it’s simple to get started and there are plenty of options to make the site look like you want it without being too arcane. Tweak the settings, give it a try. We think you’ll love what you find. Installation is a cool and easy process, thanks in large part to Notio’s single click installer. Yeppers, it is what it is. One click gets the job done. Get started now, not in a few minutes. Pretty, pretty, pretty cool. Visual Composer, which allows you to change up the layout rapidly, is what powers this theme. Lots of the very best templates on the market are using this powerful tool and it has no limits to what can be build. No fences. Notio looks great on any device thanks to retina ready display and that means your WooCommerce driven store with grid layout is going to look amazing and behave even better.

Inverto
Inverto has a simple and crisp style that puts all the attention on your products. If you’d like to integrate a high-quality WordPress blog on your shop website, Inverto is a great this theme is a little bit different than many of the others in this collection, it’s got a very Stark black and white design, it really allows your content to shine through. It’s sort of the monochrome look that may not be for everyone, but if you’ve got modern products to sell, I think that it does a pretty good job of presenting them in a clean and clear way. It certainly focuses all the attention on your content and there are relatively few distractions. This theme also comes with a high-quality portfolio and personal blog setup, a crucial detail that many e-commerce themes overlook. This responsive theme has one click demo data import, a dedicated support for him and it supports all the most popular plugins to help make your blogging life easier.

Slikk
Cast your weary gaze upon Slikk, a modern WordPress theme that pretty much donkey punches the competition. This theme is like a rogue cop, unafraid of the consequences of being a total loose cannon and an absolute badass. This theme dumps flour on a grease fire, just like you’re supposed to, it rescues kittens from a tree and it walks old ladies across the street. It’s loud and brash on the outside, but warm and tender on the inside. I think it’s a perfect blend. For look books and blogs, for eCommerce websites and elegant fashion shops, this rough and rugged theme has few equals. This is a strong theme that lays on the horn if you get in its way. It’s a theme of the plan, it’s never ashamed to make a scene and it kicks and in the face of weaklings. That sounds kind of rude, I don’t think this is a theme that you would bring home to meet your daughter, but do you really want your daughter marrying a WordPress theme anyway? If you do, that’s your deal I guess. Really, it’s up to your daughter. Anyway, the cherry on the top of this Slikk WordPress theme is its judicious use of features and it’s simple and fearless Style.

China or Vietnam for Product Sourcing?
Nearly four years — during a time when our international lawyers were seeing a big increase in Vietnam work from companies looking to diversify their manufacturing from China — I wrote a series of blog posts on sourcing product from Vietnam. Since that time, our Vietnam practice has steadily grown, until about five months ago when it exploded. In light of the rapidly increasing demand for information regarding sourcing product from Vietnam and in light of the dearth of such information, I am going to reprise and update those posts over the next few weeks.
This first post comes from March, 2015 and was — I believe –written from Ho Chi Minh City.
As my law firm’s Vietnam practice continues to grow, I have become fascinated with how companies decide on where to outsource their product manufacturing as between China and Vietnam, both for new products and for products currently being made in China. One of the reasons I am so fascinated by this is because so many factors must go into the decision and unless IP is paramount for the company, the legal issues are not usually central.
So I was delighted to read the post, 3 Key Factors for Sourcing in Vietnam, particularly since it is written by InTouch Manufacturing Services, a company I know to have substantial China sourcing experience.
That post starts out talking about how the media has been writing often of late about manufacturing shifting from China to Vietnam. It then notes that Nike now gets 42 percent of its product from Vietnam, as compared to 30 percent from China, widening the gap even since 2010. The post then presents the following wage chart from the Japan External Trade Organization showing that China factory workers make, on average, three times as much as factory workers in Vietnam.
The post calls this wage disparity “significant for any labor-intensive product like footwear, garments, and electronics.” It is, but as I am always saying, if wages were the only factor, every company would be looking to start sourcing in Afghanistan, South Sudan or Yemen, and of course they are not.
Most importantly though, this post analyzes from a sourcing perspective the following three key issues involved in choosing between China and Vietnam.
1. Product Type. The post notes that “Vietnam has proven to be quite capable of producing labor-intensive products like footwear and is now starting to win over major technology companies for significant investments in more technical manufacturing.” However, though “capabilities and confidence in Vietnamese manufacturing are growing … China still maintains a significant competitive advantage.”
The post rightly warns those looking to shift production from China to Vietnam to consider “the risks posed by a [Vietnamese] workforce that is relatively new and inexperienced” and suggests asking “what might you be taking for granted in China now that you may find yourself struggling to manage or live without in Vietnam?”
2. Your Existing Supply Chain. The post rightly points out that Vietnam’s infrastructure is not as good as China’s and this could be particularly problematic for smaller companies that cannot essentially fund their own infrastructure:
Vietnam’s fragmented manufacturing industry makes it harder to identify suitable suppliers, especially for those new to Vietnam. Lack of basic infrastructure is a main cause of this fragmentation. Contrast that with China where you can find just about anything you want – and usually more than a handful of viable options that aren’t too far away from where you need them. With well-paved roads, 7 of the world’s 10 busiest shipping ports, and a massive network of high-speed and commercial rail lines, infrastructure in China is extremely well established.
* * * *
Both countries pose their own unique challenges to foreigners looking to establish operations there, but the path is clearer in China. Tons of businesses have already set up shop and blazed the trail for mega corporations and small-time entrepreneurs alike. Potential foreign buyers and business owners of all sizes will have a relatively easier time finding guidance about China than for Vietnam.
This is very true and one of the things we are finding we are having to do for our clients looking to go into Vietnam is to connect them with appropriate people in Vietnam, far more often than we do for our clients looking to go into China.
3: Foreign-owned Manufacturers. The post discusses how so many of the “manufacturers in Vietnam established for export are actually foreign owned,” with a large portion of those owned or operated by Chinese or Taiwanese. Very true, and for more on that, check out this post, What’s Your Vietnam Strategy? on my time in Vietnam during last year’s anti-Chinese riots.
Interestingly, the post notes how this foreign ownership means that the time and energy you have spent “learning the nuances of Chinese culture and manufacturing will not have gone to waste. This makes it easy to transfer existing QC checklists, specification sheets, or other documentation that might have been written in English and Chinese. You’ll generally find that these factories also employ Vietnamese staff proficient in both English and Chinese.”
The post also wisely notes that with so many Chinese manufacturers themselves having set up in Vietnam, you should discuss with them how you “may be able to work with your Chinese supplier to keep some of the production processes in China, while outsourcing others.”
It makes for a really good read and I recommend you read it.
The same core things have remained the same for Vietnam, but there have been improvements on all fronts.
Product Type. As expected, manufacturing in Vietnam is becoming increasingly sophisticated, to the point that it nears China standards for many products. Many of our clients that make clothing, shoes, furniture, doors and many sorts of housewares have been in Vietnam for years now, with great success and with rising manufacturing sophistication. Many of our clients that make kitchen appliances and electronics and more complicated household items (like door handles/locks) are either sticking their toes into Vietnam or are looking to do so.
Existing Supply Chain. China’s road and port transportation has improved since 2015 but it is still not even close to China in terms of capacity or reliability, especially for smaller companies. Vietnam has been discovered and even overrun with new manufacturing in the last few months and this is taxing its roads and its ports and its factories. Companies that have not experienced product delays in Vietnam for years are experiencing them right now and we expect that will only increase as more foreign companies that ship product to the United States (and even elsewhere) move production from China to Vietnam.
3: Foreign-owned Manufacturers. Still true. Many factories in Vietnam that cater to America and European and Australian companies are owned out of Taiwan.
One new thing about which you need to be careful these days is making sure your product made in Vietnam will actually be deemed to have been made in Vietnam for US tariff purposes. We are hearing of Chinese companies assuring their foreign buyers that they will ship their products to Vietnam (or Indonesia or Malaysia or Thailand or Hong Kong or Taiwan or Cambodia) and from there have them shipped to the United States and that doing this will make them “tariff free.” Having your made in China products shipped to Taiwan or to Malaysia or to Thailand or to Vietnam or to anywhere else and then having those products shipped to the United States as though they are not from China can and does lead to massive fines and to JAIL TIME. Chinese factories are claiming either that this transshipping is either legal or that nobody ever gets caught, neither of which are remotely true. Do you really want to be legal advice about United States customs law from a Chinese factory with a massive incentive to sell you Chinese products and very little incentive to keep you out of jail?
US importers that falsely label the country of origin on their imports are subject to significant fines and penalties and to criminal prosecution. Lying about a product’s country of origin can subject you to 20 years in Federal prison. My law firm’s international trade lawyers are always pointing out that whenever the US increases tariffs on a product, the US Government knows there is an increased likelihood of illegal transshipping of that product and it prepares accordingly. The U.S. government is preparing to catch those who transship China products to avoid the new China tariffs and it will no doubt be tougher than usual on anyone they catch engaging in transshipping
The examples below are illustrative.
A US importer is told by its Chinese producer/exporter whose products will be covered by the China tariffs not to worry about the tariffs because the Chinese company will ship the product through Taiwan and list them as Taiwan products. The importer should decline this offer because if it imports this product knowing it is from China and not Taiwan, it will be criminally liable under U.S. customs law and subject to potentially massive damages under the U.S. False Claims Act.
A US importer suspects its Vietnamese “producer” is not actually making anything, but rather simply transshipping product that comes from the Chinese company that owns it. The company visits the Vietnam facility and it does not appear anything is actually being produced there. The US importer raises this concern with the Chinese company which tells the US company that it can avoid any problems by being listed as the consignee of the products and not the importer of record since it is the importer who is at risk. This too is simply wrong information.
Transshipment is a crime and Chinese companies and their US importers can have very different interests when it comes to importing product into the United States. The Chinese company wants to ship product to the US above all else and the US importer should above all else want to avoid Customs trouble and stay out of jail. The Trump Administration has made known its desire to vigorously hunt down and prosecute transshipment claims.
Here’s the thing though. There is often a lot you can do to legally change the country of origin of your products, but the key here is legally. The other key here is that the rules for figuring out the appropriate country of origin are incredibly complicated and best left to an experienced and qualified US customs lawyer.
So though it may be possible for you to make minor (or major) changes in how you are having your products made so they can legally avoid the China tariffs, you need to tread carefully and not just go along with what your China factory is telling you to do. It’s your company and your money and your freedom that’s at stake here and this is not something on which you should be messing around and taking advice from anyone whose job it is to do anything but look out for your interests.

Consulting – WordPress Theme that Perfectly Fit any Business Site
Don’t think I’ll reveal a huge secret stating the fact that Consulting is a WordPress self-explanatory consulting theme obviously, from the popular Envato Power Elite Author, StylemixThemes. The name speaks for itself!
In time when a whole bunch of handy features fit it best for consulting and business financing, I’ll surely say Consulting might be used as a WordPress business theme in general, despite much of the marketing industry focuses on those two segments stated above.
Therefore, this review deserves a look if you planning to run a business website for yourself or for your own client. Give an overview of my consultation, read to see what this well-developed, thought out, theme can do, and the parameters that it gives you for setting up your site.
The Feature List
Let’s start with functionality and detailed features while we’ll get back to the valuation afterwards:
25 one-click import demo varieties.
47 templates in each Containing the ones for services, case studies, team member pages, and more – WPBakery Page Builder supported.
Appointment booking feature supported by Booked plugin.
Events calendar containing multiple developed display templates.
Slider Revolution.
Multi-location Google Maps display feature and stress-free Google Maps API implementation.

25 Well-Built Consulting’s Demos Check Out
The biggest bet by the developers of Consulting as you might notice are the neat demos.

Just as unique, exceptional and creative as professional, they will certainly catch your eye:
With all those varieties you will certainly find the one that will provide the impression you want your site to give and render.
Installation Process – Getting Started
After completing installation of the theme, you need to activate your product under Consulting -> Product registration
Once you acquired your ThemeForest purchase token, enter it so you can activate the theme.
After this you can choose and install the demo content under Consulting -> Demo Import:
Each demo layout requires a number of plugins to function properly. Fortunately, StylemixThemes has made it easy for you to install the plugins and they will be installed automatically during the demo import.
Depending on the speed of your Internet connection, it may take some time to install all the plugins and import the demo content.
After finishing the process, you will get up and running website, and all you need is to change the texts and images.
Customizing The Consulting Theme Options
After importing the demo of your choice and having fully-functioning website, you would definitely like to make the site your own customizing some things around.
You need to proceed with two basic tactics in order to make this happen:
The WordPress Customizer to change general theme style options
WPBakery Page Builder (former Visual Composer) to edit individual page templates
How they work:
The WordPress Customizer in Consulting Theme
Consulting is making an accent on easily customizable WordPress Live Theme Customizer loved by the customers instead of a custom theme options panel
The settings in the front-end customizer are focused for viewing changes in the website preview in real time and not requiring any coding skills
You could observe all of the different Customizer possibilities in the screen beneath:
For example, to manage the address in your header, follow this:
Proceed to the Headertab
Input your new address
Directly grasp alive showing
Likewise, you could as well rapidly shift among the 12 built-in header styles only by using the drop-down in the Header Appearance block:
Furthermore, new Consulting demos are featured by dedicated Header Builder, see how it works here:
youtube
With an intuitive drag-n-drop editor it’s easy to build a customized header and provide great user experience on all devices and platforms.
The StylemixThemes using the Header Builder Plugin in their flagship themes like Consulting, Crypterio and Pearl.
Besides, the WordPress Customizer has a load of features to go around.
Individual Pages Customization Via WPBakery Page Builder
While you use the WordPress Customizer to set up the big picture settings for your website, if you want to edit the actual demo page templates that come with Consulting, you’ll use the included WPBakery Page Builder (formerly known as Visual Composer).
For example, to edit the homepage design on your site, you’d:
Go to the WordPress Pagesarea
Find the page Consulting is using as the homepage
Click Edit with WPBakery Page Builder
Then, you can edit your page using simple drag and drop editor with a live preview:
And it’s not just your homepage that you can edit this way – you can also edit any of the other ~47 page templates that are included with the demo content.
For example, here’s what it looks like to edit your Contact Us page:
I personally prefer the designer’s strategies to developing page templates using the page builder for the reason that you are very easy to enter and customize things around even if you do not know how to code.
Analyzing deeper on Consulting one of a kind Functionality
Since you’ve got the idea how its functioning already let’s deepen into Consulting’s coolest features.
Due to the containing plugins and demo content all of them come already integrated. That is – I didn’t have to manually set any of this up – it just worked from day one.
Book an Appointment Feature by Booked Plugin
When you closely working with clients and among business, appointments bookings are one of the crucial necessity. And that is where included premium Booked plugin comes in which lets you easily set your availability and allow customers to arrange an appointment.
All you do is set up your availability from your WordPress dashboard:

GreenSock for Beginners: a Web Animation Tutorial (Part 1)
My aim in this article is to give you a thorough introduction to GreenSock, also known as GSAP (GreenSock Animation Platform), a super performant, professional-grade HTML5 animation engine for the modern web.
This is the fourth article in the series Beyond CSS: Dynamic DOM Animation Libraries.
Here's what I covered in the past issues:
Animating the DOM with Anime.js touches on how to make the best use of animation on the web and when you could consider using a JavaScript animation library instead of CSS-only animation. It then focuses on Anime.js, a free and lightweight JavaScript animation library
Fun Animation Effects with KUTE.js introduces you to KUTE.js, a free and feature-rich JavaScript animation library
Make Your Website Interactive and Fun with Velocity.js (No jQuery) shows you how to use Velocity.js, an open source, robust free animation library, to create performant web animations.
GSAP has too many features to fit in one article. This is why I've opted for a multi-part article all dedicated to various areas of the GreenSock library.
In more detail:
By the end of this first part, you'll have learned about GreenSock's capabilities and features, licensing model, core components, and basic syntax to tween and stagger DOM elements
In part 2, I'll introduce GreenSock's native timeline functionality
Finally, part 3 will focus on some powerful bonus plugins GreenSock makes available to accomplish complex animation tasks easily with a few lines of code.
If you're already a GSAP Ninja, check out Animating Bootstrap Carousels with the GSAP Animation Library, where George Martsoukos illustrates an effective use of GreenSock for UI animation.
Without further ado, brace yourself, the journey is about to begin!
What is GreenSock and What Is It Good For?
GreenSock is the de facto industry-standard JavaScript animation platform available today.
It's a mature JavaScript library that has its roots in Flash-based animation. This means the guys behind GreenSock know web animation inside-out, the library has been around for a long time and is not going anywhere any time soon.
GSAP includes a comprehensive suite of tools, utilities, and plugins you can leverage to handle any web animation challenge you happen to face, from animating SVGs consistently across multiple browsers to coding complex animation sequences, dragging elements across the screen, splitting and scrambling text, and so much more.
To mention just three things I particularly love about GreenSock:
Although the library is mega rich in terms of features, the learning curve is relatively shallow because it uses an intuitive and consistent syntax across all its various implementations and plugins. In addition, it offers awesome documentation, tutorials, and support via the GSAP Forums. Also, the library itself is continually updated and maintained. These are all crucial factors when building a project which relies on an external library for any of its key features and user experience
It's modular and light-weight, which means it won't add bloat to your web projects
Thanks to its powerful timeline functionality, GSAP affords precise control over the timings not only of single tweens, but also of multiple tweens as part of a whole animation flow.
Core GreenSock Tools
These are GreenSock's core modules:
TweenLite — the foundation of GSAP, a lightweight and fast HTML5 animation library
TweenMax — TweenLite's extension, which besides comprising TweenLite itself, includes:
TimelineLite
TimelineMax
CSSPlugin
AttrPlugin
RoundPropsPlugin
DirectionalRotationPlugin
BezierPlugin
EasePack
TimelineLite — a lightweight timeline to take control of multiple tweens and/or other timelines
TimelineMax — an enhanced version of TimelineLite, which offers additional, non essential capabilities like repeat, repeatDelay, yoyo, and more.
You can choose to include TweenLite in your project and then add other modules separately as you need them. Alternatively, you can choose to include TweenMax (the approach I'm going to take in this multi-part series), which packages all the core modules in one optimized file.
It's also worth noting that GSAP offers some paid extras like the DrawSVGPlugin to create animated line drawing effects with SVGs, the powerful MorphSVGPlugin to morph one SVG shape into another (even without requiring that the two shapes have the same number of points), and others. Although you need to be a paying member of the Club GreenSock to use these plugins, GSAP makes available to you for free a special CodePen-based version so that you can try them out. This is a cool offer I'm going to take full advantage of later on in part 3 (and you with me).
License
GSAP hasn't adopted a free open-source license like MIT largely for reasons that concern keeping the product's quality high and its maintenance financially sustainable over the long term.
GreenSock makes available two licenses:
Standard License — use of the library is totally free in digital products that are free to use (even if developers get paid to build them)
Business Green — this license includes three tiers with the middle tier, Shockingly Green, being the most popular. As a Shockingly Green member you'll gain access to all the bonus plugins and extras, but without the commercial license.
Despite the non-adherence to MIT and similar free use licenses, by letting you peek into its raw code both on the project's GitHub repo and in your downloads, GreenSock encourages you to learn from its developers' code and their mastery of JavaScript animation, which is one of the best features of the open source philosophy.
