hey, that's okay, you're allowed to block people for your own safety. i don't keep track of who does and doesn't have me blocked. if someone wants to block me, that's their right, it don't take it personally. you do not have to apologize for blocking me at any point. that's not something you ever have to apologize to someone for, but i totally get why you would want to do that to give yourself some form of closure. that makes sense to me

i understand why you would've blocked over that. when i was running that server, i was friends with some very aggressive people who were adamant on policing the usage of the word femboy, so i apologize that things got so shitty about that. other staff members that were involved were very, very pushy and i ended up feeling extremely alienated from that server because i found myself disagreeing with a lot of the rules that got put into place. i especially started feeling uncomfortable because other staff members were very transandrophobic and it was causing me a lot of self hatred for being a trans man at the time. that discord server was not good for my mental health, which is why i stopped interacting with it before leaving altogether.

it took me a while to realize i did not agree with those people and that the fighting over who "gets" to use the term is so fucking petty and stupid, but i see it now and that shit was dumb. i can see why you would've been upset and left and blocked over that. at the time, plenty of people were mad about it and they had every right to be. i wasn't treating certain people right. i left that server a while back because i just got so tired of how it was being run and did not have the energy to try to rectify it due to homelessness and housing insecurity at the time. it was way too authoritarian in terms of who was allowed to identify as certain terms for me to continue to give it my stamp of approval. it was like, the exact opposite of what i wanted in a queer discord server.

Yeah, I'm gatekeeping. I am naked at the gate, gock out, axes raised, and howling like an AU version of Ragnar Lodbrok who is deeply concerned with media literacy. Let me explain why.

This is not a fandom in the traditional sense - this is a community of writers. There is no fixed "canon"; the canon is what we build as a community. Not by fiat, not by vote, simply by writing the next fic and deciding what parts of the world we can, should, or must integrate into it, and letting that influence whoever comes after us. This is why it's recommended to read the foundational works before writing - they, as a selection, exist to give a solid overview of what HDG is.

But it goes well beyond the foundational works, of course.

Why are the biorhythm mechanics of Ramifaction considered canon? Because a bunch of other authors in the space looked at Ramifaction and thought, "Wow, I'm stealing that, that's incredibly cool".

Why do some beats in Training The Rose seem so familiar to me? Because me and the author have been trading influence back and forth since our respective fics started - it's genuinely very flattering to see how much of Rosanna has gotten into Iya. 🥰

Why do so darn many fics feature the specific stylistic note of "approval" being bolded and italicized? Because Good Sensory hit the HDG community like a fucking nuke. (Extremely minor spoilers but if you ever run into an Eevee named "Fable", that's probably also Sheepwave's fault.)

Each individual author's "canon" is going to be subtly different. My influences will be different from someone else's, and that's okay. It allows for currently active stories in the setting as varied as The Ascent, Good Sensory, Dancing to Her Rhythms, Lucky Star, Dark Forest Hypothesis, Freedom's Ember, How A Floret Fucks Around, or A Part Of Who I Am. All incredible stories with different focuses, different feels, different levels of sexuality, kink, consent, and horror, hell, even different genres... and they still all have that very distinctive, very special vibe that HDG has for a lot of us. They're adding parapets and flagpoles and occasionally maybe an extra wing to our collaborative sandcastle, feeling out the boundaries and creating good art within them. And through that, what HDG is can grow without compromising what makes it so special.

It's not even that hard! Like, it's always hard to make a work that's genuinely great, but making an HDG story that fits the setting and resonates with an audience? You can do it! It happens all the time. There are quite a few new authors who show up on the discord, lurk for a while, then casually drop a fic that shows, if nothing else, that they get it. Hell, there are even Tumblr RP blogs here I could point to that definitely get it - @honey-floret immediately springs to mind. @lucy---lou is new but seems to be heading in the right direction; I enjoyed their most recent post on a dinner date with an affini and her floret. This isn't some exclusive clubhouse there's no way into.

But if you don't get it, please don't take it the wrong way when we ask you to exit our sandbox. It's okay - this isn't for everyone (and to anyone saying otherwise, or minimizing the sharp and fucked-up elements of the setting, Fucking Stop It.) - and we like it that way. If you aren't willing to engage with the setting on its own terms, find a different setting. Make a different setting, even! But the nature of HDG as a shared writing community setting means that we need to work to maintain what's special about it.

If you're loudly complaining about how you'd love HDG if only it didn't have so much of <insert core theme of HDG here>... I say this with as much kindness and love as I can offer: You don't actually like HDG. You should find something else to obsess over. Don't expect us to react kindly when your fic tries to tear out the main hall because you think it'd look better without all the severed heads. We are here for the metaphorical severed heads.

If you don't like non-con, this setting is not for you.

If you don't like dubcon, this setting is not for you.

If you don't enjoy forced drugging, intox play, and being treated as lesser, this setting is not for you.

If you aren't generally down with the idea that changing a person to help them be happier and less miserable, even if this means drastically changing them against their will, is a good thing in a fantasy setting, HDG might not be for you.

And that's fine. It's not for everyone. It's aggressively, emphatically not for everyone. It's niche, it's weird, and we're quite happy to stay that way. There's nothing wrong with reading HDG, bouncing off it, and going, "Hm, not my thing".

That said, if your response is to explicitly seek out consent in the non-con setting; if your response is to complain when the consent gets even slightly dubious (shoutouts to the weirdos whining about Good Sensory, a fic which is and continues to be as consensual as it is possible to be within the world and framework of HDG); if your response is to rate fics based on whether or not someone gets their mind erased...

...maybe don't? Maybe go find a different setting and writing community. Hell, make your own. HDG is probably not for you, and it definitely doesn't need you to "fix" it.

We're over here in our sandbox playing with toys like disempowerment, dehumanization, and unconditional love and care regardless of whether you think you need or deserve it. If that's not your jam, there's countless other sandboxes with countless other toys to play in. Find one of them.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go back to slow-boiling a Terran so hard she doesn't realize how few choices she truly has left, and making it so much fun for her she doesn't really care.

okay so it must have been late 2018 or early 2019 aka the height of TMA fandom while the podcast was still running because of fucking course this is about Tee Em Ay.

I was incredibly cranky and just downright miserable because I'd just had an appointment with the Gender Psychologist in Zurich I was seeing so I could get approved for top surgery and referred to a surgeon which, beside the fact this meant I had to drive the train back home from Fucking Zurich (we all know Zurich sucks), also meant I'd just spent an hour with the lady who had implied that before I could get approved for surgery I'd have to convince her that this was The Appropriate Procedure for my Specific Gender, when my whole gender deal is [vague hand gesture] [a sharp burst of static] [a void so deep nobody's looking back], which didn't make her happy bc it meant I couldn't Explain my gender to her.

So while I was freaking out about that in One discord chat with a friend while sitting on the train, I was also distracting myself from all that by talking to Merlin about our experiences reading TMA fic. And we, both ace, thought it was kinda a shame when E-rated fics had the tag "Canon Asexual Character" only to then neither deal with nor even mention in passing that John actually Is ace while he's getting railed by Martin or whatever.

I lied in my OP - I didn't write one (1) tweet about being annoyed about that, it was two or three. And granted, I didn't make extra sure to word my annoyance delicately, mainly because I was a) feeling cranky and miserable, as established, and b) I was tweeting all this to an audience of genuinely like 28 people.

Well! A TMA fic writer with a couple hundred followers and a partner who was a Fandom Big Name saw that and felt vagued I guess, took a screenshot of my tweets and posted it while whining about my opinion and how this could Only be about them and anyway, it's fine because an ace friend of theirs said--

This was the start of Ace Discourse in the fandom. People @-ed me and sent me msgs on Tumblr and anyway, won't anybody think of the poor aces who DO fuck (which, I unfortunately was too overwhelmed at the time to reply with something like "this was never the point, I KNOW there's aces who fuck, I AM ace and will have you know I'm very good at eating pussy)--

Anyway. A few days later above-mentioned author started tagging their shit on ao3 with "Ace Subtype: Kinky Ace" or w/e, and people jumped on that bandwagon.

I don't know if this is still being done because to this day TMA remains the only fandom I've completely turned my back on due to its fanbase (and the fact that the last two seasons were dogshit imo (and also I have one-sided beef with Jonny these days because he said something stupid about the Fermi Paradox that one time, but I do recognize that this is beside the point and also parasocial and petty)).

Anyway. TL;DR: The only media-related thing worse than TMA fandom is the movie Old (2021) (dir. M. Night Shyamalan)

The great thing about my (not tiny but not insanely high) follower count, none of which are tumblr celebrity who can curse me with notes, is generally posts won't get too many more notes than I'm expecting. I'll tag my vaguely insightful fandom takes or jokes with the fandom tags and then sure they'll get notes and occasionally even dip into the hundreds or occasionally thousands of notes. But in a mid sized fandom that just released the most recent episode that's not super surprising and it also isn't a problem bc those posts don't lend themselves to ppl getting super discoursy or mad about them

But the fun thing is. Despite the fact that I do have a decent number of followers at this point, none of them care about my untagged hottakes about "thing I saw that made me mad" of the day. They all follow me for some fandom or another that I once did a good post in and I'm probably consistently disappointing them by not posting about that fandom enough

So I can still be a hater on main bc as long as I resist the urge to maintag whatever I'm ranting about, it's gonna get at most 3 likes from a couple of mutuals.

Right. Lucy often gave you advice on clothes - on the times you joined him in the city, you were constantly texting her pictures of clothes you saw in shop windows, wondering if you should buy them. And it made sense - the fact he got a full view of your body between the two photos was just a heavenly side effect of you trying to show both sides of the set. This didn't mean there wasn't someone else in mind with the lingerie, but at least you hadn't meant to send those photos to some asshole who you couldn't even tell him about.

But, more pressingly, he still had to respond. You'd sent Lighter six messages now, and he'd opened them immediately and not said anything the whole time. Not even typing. Just staring at the photos of your boobs like the lovestruck, horny idiot he was. He told himself to get a grip.
