Leaving aside the most important part of the chapter, Yor must kiss her husband for world peace and the Twiyor nation to be happy.

I think it's a good message if we look deeper into how the stereotypical duality of women is portrayed to us, which I think is a message that can encompass anyone in general.

The most conventional romantic movies are usually about the man being - stereotypically - the strongest and the one who must protect the woman, who wins his sensitive heart and makes the hero bring out his sweetest feelings.

Becky being a little girl has in her heart the fantasy of a sweet romantic love just like the one in her novels and movies. But sometimes, people are not so conventional.

Both Anya and Yor, don't feel comfortable being pigeonholed into “girls waiting to be passively rescued”, because within themselves the love for the people around them is a drive to be strong, take action and save others.

I feel that one of Endo's best points, is her way of undertaking a concept of what femininity, or rather, “feminine energy”, represents. Feminine energy is a force that comes from feelings, it is fluctuating and unpredictable, sometimes like a gentle breeze and sometimes like a terrible hurricane.

Most of Endo's female characters are strong, independent women who do not need to be rescued. And they are very willing to put themselves in the face of danger to protect those they love. This is something we have seen, with characters like Yor, Sylvia, Martha, Fiona, and they have been able to save other men or take on subjects much larger and more muscular than them.

Even with girls like Anya who we know very well is a very brave girl and has been in the face of danger despite her age (maybe too much, our poor baby is only 4 to 5 years old, God), and has the strength to send a bully flying (and fall in love in the process) on the first day of school.

So …. if women are strong …. men are weak?

Absolutely not!

Everyone, regardless of gender, is strong. We know perfectly well that Twilight is someone capable of taking care of himself, is someone who is physically trained and has enormous intelligence. Even Yuri has survived so many dangers that we wonder how the hell he didn't die. Damian is a brave guy (when he doesn't see an insect lol).

The point is, even though women and men (or any gender in general) are strong. We all have our weaknesses, our sensitive sides.

You can do things on your own, but you don't have to do everything at once....

Clearly, although Yor is physically strong, she has problems with metal and verbal confrontations. Because her insecurities are so great that when they make her doubt herself and her own value, she tends to lose it and that is when Loid is there for her, not to take care of her because she is weak, but to remind her of her own value (because she doesn't seem to realize it herself) and to make her see that she is worthy of the understanding and love of others. In the same way that Yor reminds him that he too can be a little weak and take refuge in her.

Even if we feel weak and awkward, we can take initiative....

I think it is very important, the idea that Yor or anyone in general can have the “initiative” to seek on their own that “love” that you so desire.

Many times we feel that if we don't fit into the expected canon, or social archetype we are not worthy of love. (Feminine women who feel vulnerable and who depend on the guy to live are the ones who get love in the end). When nothing could be further from the truth….

Being weak and vulnerable is something totally natural and not exclusive to one gender or social role. We are all weak and strong at the core, and we need each other to complement each other and to be able to enjoy much more of our own love and the love we can give and receive from others.

Yor's desire to actively seek love (kissing her husband a lot) is not only a way to develop her bond with Loid, but a way to grow her self-esteem and challenge her insecurities. To stop seeing herself as a child in front of the world, but a woman who can get things because she wants them (and has her husband's consent, of course) (But, come on, we all know Loid needs kisses from Yor).

... right so who wants to hear my deranged theory about Yuri Tokyo Debunker with no evidence backing it up I believe only as a joke.

The mutual mommy issues and classical music interest made me think that Yuri and Jin could be related. A lot of Yuri's... yuri-ness screams second child syndrome, I couldn't find where or if it was even said but Yuri seems to indicate he was raised to be a doctor. We know Jin's dad is the head of the entire institute, the institute also has a medical branch. Based on what we know about Jin's dad he seems like the old school political dynasty sort, if he had two sons raising one to take over the Institute and the other to oversee its medical branch makes a lot of sense. It would also make sense for Yuri, as the baby of the family, to maybe be closer to their mother than Jin was. If Jin was expected to take over for their father, it makes sense for his dad to monopolize his time and not allow him to spend as much of it with his mom. Yuri could have spent almost all of his time with her, and if Mama Kamurai was particularly sickly (or cursed) Yuri's interest in becoming a doctor becomes extremely significant. It is clear both Yuri and Jin love their mothers, whoever they are, but if she was the same woman their hatred for each other can be explained by a sibling rivalry. Jin resenting Yuri for being mommy's "favorite" and h Yuri hates that Jin is daddy's favorite and gets all the money to do whatever he wants with while he's stuck writing expense reports for his vital research. Jin could even be blaming Yuri for being unable to save their mom, it certainly seems like Yuri is blaming himself already.

If this was the case, I think whatever injury Jin has sustained probably was the breaking point between the two. Yuri probably doesn't want to lose his brother, he seems like the sort who would really desperately want big brother's approval. If Jin turned his help away in disgust then of course that would nuke the relationship between the two dorms. If Yuri really was just Jin's younger brother (oh how phrasing it like that would irritate him) then of course everyone else would see his behavior as a temper tantrum and not a concern. He's just mad daddy doesn't love him, give it a rest. Yuri will get over this soon enough, he's a grown adult... right?

This would also mean that Yuri didn't need to ever have been placed in Frostheim. He always could have been in Mortranken, he just associated with Frostheim because he is the younger brother of the King. And why he hates Darkwick General so much and is so insistent on doing his own thing: he wants to prove he is more than his family name. That he can cure people, that he isn't his father's puppet. This would probably further drive the wedge between him and Jin, that's something Jin wants to do himself but can't on account of being the oldest son. He sees his little brother as privileged in the same way his little brother thinks he is.

Counter Arguments/Rebuttals:

They do not look much alike. Zenji and Jiro + Hyde and Sho do, so the game making them look different is my biggest reason I think this could be wrong. They don't need to be related for their dislike for each other to make sense, it would just be deeply tragic. And could potentially set up an arc where Zenji chews Jin out for being a shitty older brother, he loves Jiro so much he would die (and probably did) defending him. Why is Jin ignoring his brother? Has he no heart? (not to mention why Yuri is so attached to Jiro, little brothers need to stick together)

Different last names. I think this could be explained by Yuri using his mother's maiden name to separate himself from his family, which would further irritate Jin because how fucking dare he use their mom's name like that?

Like I said, this doesn't need to be the explanation for why Yuri and Jin hate each other. He very easily could have just been a student there and failed to help Jin through his injury. It makes just as much if not more sense. My one real reason for holding onto brother theory when that one works is that... fuck that's a lot of students transferring out of Frostheim. Almost too many to make sense if you go with Haku having originally been there too. It almost feels like it makes more sense if Yuri has always been in Mortranken... but not by much when you take into account everything else you need to believe in order for brother theory to be true.

Hello! I just finish reading the "Ocean Idiots for Idiots" i need to know more about the conflict with the two churches worshipping the sea. (Meaugism and Nortumbic, right?)

In any case, I don't have any further thoughts abt this presently, but please enjoy some old notes of mine:

The head of the Kitonese Empire and the Head Priestess of Saumaces are locked in some sort of hella toxic Yuri obsession with each other that started as a religious conflict and power grab and has since escalated into an eternal Cold War/proxy religious battle that’s consumed the both of them for years.

The head priestess is hella in denial about her reasoning but once told Priya to hold her desires in check, lest they control her (you know, like a massive hypocrite). Not like she hasn't been single handedly orchestrating an elaborate gambit to prove to this one woman that her belief is true and that

Kiton’s empress (or maybe head general? Unsure) is a strict woman whose main goal is to acquire power and build a nation that can outlast any storm, conquer any foe. However, given Saumaces’ status as Indra’s favored, they can’t outright attack them.

Saumaces was spared from Indra’s Great Storm (her lashing out post The Incident™), and this led to a lot of resentment towards them as they didn’t have to basically rebuild from scratch. Weird that. Church of Indra the wrathful more about both appeasing her, and ensuring that humanity is strong enough to endure her violence(?).

With Mariza thrown into the mix, Saumaces’ status is called into question and now they’re vulnerable to attack by their enemies, eager to get their hands on the most built up nation (second if you count Kiton, they’re also pretty good but had something of a head start rebuilding)

Kiton’s Lesbian:

Early 40s, Long ponytail or some kind of elaborate hair-do, no in between. She’s a military savant, having risen up the ranks from a young age and establishing herself as an authority not to be questioned or trifled with. Her drive comes from a need to survive, to outlast and endure. She’s heard stories (or was there?) for the aftermath of Indra’s storm (debatable, idk how long ago it actually was) and thinks that Kiton, and the world at large, must rebuild and strengthen. (Might be the universe's equivalent of an atheist? At the very least doesn't really respect the gods. Appease them maybe but those motherfuckers are on thin ice)

Saumaces Lesbian:

Mid 50s, Short cropped hair (curly?) and a sun-worn face. She’s served the church of Indra her entire life, and is heavily devoted to Indra (not like Priya tho lmao), believes deeply in the generosity of the sea and that those the sea does not favor have… maybe earned her ire. Is aware of others’ negative feelings towards the nation but believes that in time, they’ll come to see that Indra’s will remains. Is very aware of the power that belief in Indra grants, both in the literal sense, and in the "I'd rather not deal with an all out war" sense.

Saw some art of it once that was very cute, also they would just work well together. They are both badass chaotic older women who are down for anything, love drinking, have a job they are passionate about, raised a kid that is now a member of the straw hats, and don't let their age stop them from having fun. I could see them meeting at a bar and getting along like a house on fire. Kokoros kinder nature could also balance out Kurehas mean streak - Kureha can be aggressive and firm when that's what's needed while Kokoro can be a softer mediator. The world needs more old woman yuri.

Grannies unite!!!

Both older women who are experts in their fields, interacted with Gol D. Roger, and look after the younger generation, passing on their trades. Both also have close bonds with deceased mentors to members of the Straw Hats.

CoraHawk: I just love to think about this one and these two. Imagine you are Dracule Mihawk and you have this crazy flamingo lookin coworker that you can't stand and suddenly you meet this tall, pretty clumsy blonde guy and you perhaps catch feelings and then you find out this is the brother of the coworker you HATE. That in itself would be hilarious to me and I just know the Warlord meetings would be legendary with Doflamingo knowing that Mihawk went and [Redacted] (fucked) Nasty with Rosinante like the SQUABBLING WOULD BE INSUFFERABLE AND THE BLOODBATHS. Anyway moving on from that, I think there's an odd balance hidden in there somewhere. Like a golden retriever and mangy stray dog bonding or Sunlight through the window on a warm spring morning and Moonlight shining through the planks of a crumbling but still occupied home. Stuff that's completely opposite but serve the same purpose. I think Mihawk would be intrigued and might think Rosinante is a bit ridiculous at first but eventually would be so enamoured by him and his little antics. Rosinante would be just as guarded as Mihawk if not moreso with everything he's been through and Mihawk would work his way around those guarded walls. Rosinante would most likely struggle to trust completely and to let go and I think Mihawk would be a great person to help with that, he'd make Rosinante feel safe and he'd be dependable for him and understanding. It's hard to put all my thoughts on this pairing down but I just think it would strangely work. They'd have an interesting dynamic for sure.

Happy new year! I continue to love yuri!! (and also... sonic the hedgehog... which has yuri in it now so really lucked out there)

2024 saw the end of one of my fav new(er) manga to come out recently, Monthly in the Garden with My Landlord! It really crept up on me for how much I've ended up liking it but dang, what a good ride! Sad to see it go but I'll defo keep up with the author's future works!

I've been doing a lot of catch up this year as there are plenty of longer running series' I just hadn't dug into, such as How Do We Relationship? Delicious in Dungeon and This Monster Wants to Eat Me.

Delicious in Dungeon is now so easily in my top 5 favorite manga of all time. Love the group dynamic, love the funniest morally grey elf Marcille Donato, love that its doesn't feel like it drags or goes too quick within its 14 volumes, just love it!! Also wild to see so much Farcille merch in the artist alley this year, it felt like every other table had something and I can't really think of another f/f pairing that's hit that level within the con circuit merch scene. It was a lovely to see!

On the more textual yuri side of thing: How Do We Relationship? Oh geez, of man, and what god damn read! It took me a few volumes to really get into it but the reveal that it's not “story about what happens after you start dating someone” but is actually “a story about what happens after you breakup with someone” is devastatingly good!

Rip to all the college yuri I'll read going forward because every one of them is going to be compared to HDWR, its set the new standard for me haha. It was so good I had to go and buy the whole thing in print as soon as I finished.

Speaking of which, this year I went back to buying manga in print and I'm really glad I committed to that! At first it was more a reaction to the waves of delisting we've seen but It was a lot of fun hunting down deals to populate the Yuri Tower. This corner of my room now legit makes me smile when I look at it, even if I'm going to have to work out how to fit more books on there soon.

On the video game side of things I played an old SNES RPG called Eternal Filiana and was sooo charmed by it. The game is based on a 80s light novel that is very much influenced by Lady Oscar's popularity at the time, having its own protag also be a blonde haired women who was raised as a man for plot reasons.

The part that was most interesting to me though was that the André to Filena's Oscar ended up being a woman she marries within the first 30 mins of the game. Filena and Lila can be a bit goofy in the games (b-b-but we're both women??) but they still have some legit sweet moments and having watched the OVA first, which is tries to take itself more seriously, I now have a real fondness for the pair. Here's to the first married yuri couple!

And finally... Sonic. It's been another good year for Sonic! The comics continue to be a fun read and I really liked Sonic X Shadow Generations despite being apathetic toward Shadow lol. He was good in it though and all his levels ripped! Great game! Third film also fun! Very excited by the characters who show up in the stinger :) I also got into making custom figure with my brother this year so that's been a fun hobby for us to do together.

I might have ranted about this before but I can't find my old anon tag nor my old posts so. 🐊 anon from now on for whatever else I need to rant abt on here.

this is all mostly me ranting about forced inclusivity and queer stuff (coming from a poly, pan person) so if you need to skip over this, you've been warned

Firstly, I absolutely despise Vinedeeri. It feels like it only exists because "uhh woman and woman haha they're the few woman characters in the game lets ship them because yuri" SHUT UP!! Ships used to have an interesting dynamic, they used to have substance and angst and fluff in every fandom I was in, all the ships I used to see were because they were so interesting and created so many different scenarios.

Instead, what I see most of in the phighting community and similar fandoms is "toxic yuri/yaoi!" "I love my yaoi" "gay ppl" and whatnot. Can people not ship things that aren't queer anymore? Can people not ship things for a dynamic instead of for sexuality?

It genuinely baffles me that Trafficdeeri is considered a rarepair. Don't they literally have interactions in canon?? Isn't Lightblox like an adopted daughter to Traffic?? Also I prefer Hyperzuka over Hypertana. I've had several people look at me weird for this one and I genuinely still feel a bit uncomfortable saying I ship the two because of that because it was the kind of reaction being a proshipper gives you, but as far as I'm aware they're fine to ship? Feel free to correct me on if there's anything I'm missing, but I just find the kind of "alcoholic mess x previous alcoholic mess" dynamic more compelling than "alcoholic mess with issues x alcoholic mess with issues" regardless of whether it's being interpreted as platonic or romantic.

Also also, I don't like Scythe being made POC. I find making a character black for inclusivity kind of silly, but even moreso insulting when it's, oh, you know, one of the only characters with a different skintone?? What, is being tan not "inclusive" enough? Did it not appeal to the fandom enough? Was having a character that was tan in a way that'd fit the canon not good enough? I dislike race swapping in general, but it's just. So much more irritating when it's taking away the only tan character the game had. ffs real inclusivity should live up to it's name, it should be inclusive not "appealing to the minority" it should be inclusive for everyone. The minority that needs it, the minority that's harassed, the minority that barely speaks up about it. Not just one group. Please. God. also she's a serial killer that's kind of an issue too liike. out of all the characters you had to pick 1: the serial killer and 2: the only playable character with a different skintone

I would also like to say I absolutely hate she/her subspace. I genuinely do not get why someone would look at an insane scientist that'd probably laugh at torturing people and go "Aww, she's so quirky" or whatever. It genuinely confuses me beyond belief how she/her subspace is such a widely accepted headcanon. What part of probably-capitalist mad scientist that invented hundreds of machines made for war and ruthless killing says "girlypop twink" to you??

And lastly, this game has boring characters when it tries to make them interesting, ironically enough. Some of the most interesting characters to me (outside of subspace) are Vine Staff and Shuriken just because of how many different angles you could take with the core of their character and how... Fundamentally simple they are. They're siblings, they have a clear theme, they're kind of angst-free characters outside of Vine's curse, and they have a strong bond. It's not a lot, but it's all that you need for a lot of interesting content. On the contrary, take Broker and Scythe- two relatively safe picks to hate on. They're part of a cult, Scythe is a serial killer, Broker has some sorts of phone imagery as far as I'm aware, and the cult has something something eyes something I genuinely can't remember. It's kind of more? It's meant to be more, at least. And yet I can't figure out anything interesting about this other than Broker's theme with phones that's kind of neat but the lore does nothing with that. And the eye stuff.. well, yeah, it has potential but it's just so, so underdeveloped. In trying to make the cult so much more it's ended up with so many concepts and so few that are actually solid, in comparison to characters that are simpler. Hell, look at Boombox! He's also a pretty simple character, but he's easy to enjoy too. And there's also the whole thing with him being able to tell something's up with Subspace. Maybe I just read into details a lot, but oh well.

In case you couldn't tell, I like healthy characters who's strength is small fun facts and details.

It's been almost a year since I wrote up this Role Swap AU, and we've had a couple significant character reveals since then so I think it's time to add to it.

Melinda takes the Yuri role, obviously. She's overly devoted and clingy with her sweet baby boy Damian (who is thirty years old), and though she likes the idea of him getting married in theory, no woman is ever going to be good enough for her tiny little baby (who is 6'2"). And unfortunately even with a cover identity as smooth as Anya's, she is a widow with a young son and from a lower social class than the Desmonds. She never stood a chance.

Publicly Melinda is "retired" from the social scene, but she maintains a broad range of contacts and is still popular enough that she could show up at any event and be welcomed. She is also not retired from anything in fact, and still works for the SSS in an administrative role.

Loid eventually manages to get her to warm up to him, as a nice young man if not as a grandson. Anya continues to never stand a chance, but at least Melinda is too classy to try and ruin her social life.

When Damian takes in the Briar siblings, they allow Melinda to think it was his own idea instead of a family agreement, which makes her more accepting. This isn't more "fake" grandchildren, this is her son being the generous caring man she knows he is!

She takes to Yor the fastest since she never had a little girl to raise before! (Yor is 14.) It helps that Yor isn't weirdly intelligent for her age like her sons and Loid and even Yuri are. She's a normal teenager surrounded by geniuses, which brings out Melinda's protective side. (Yor is still the LAST character in need of protection in the entire series.)

Though Melinda's security clearance is high enough that she knows Garden exists, she has no idea her own son is part of it, and she would be furious if she found out.

Demetrius is, and stay with me on this one, replacing the Authens. He's a former scholar whose declining mental health (PTSD) means he can't work anymore, and ends up moving in next door to the Forgers (Melinda arranged it) and helping Loid with his studies (Loid works better with someone who is blunt and straightforward).

For the last few years Demetrius was living in the Desmond family's old country house, but his condition has improved enough that he can handle other people, albeit in small doses. During the war Demetrius worked in weapons, especially bombs, and his triggers now are mostly to do with the sky and wide spaces. So the city is better for him, even though he rarely leaves his apartment except for doctor's appointments.

The public believes that Demetrius took to the countryside to write a dissertation, and since he was never very social to begin with people eventually forgot about him. His name only comes up when people are lamenting how disappointing the Desmond sons turned out to be. A reclusive bookworm and a middle manager.

Damian was never close to him either, though he did dutifully visit him twice a year while he was "convalescing." They usually didn't speak at all during these visits. Demetrius is more communicative now but he doesn't have anything to say most of the time. Damian feels awkward around him until they get to the topic of Loid's schooling and both agree, firmly, that children should be allowed to be children.

Interestingly, Demetrius's paranoia means that he correctly deduces that both Anya and Loid are a lot smarter and more calculating than they're letting on, but because he knows he's paranoid he dismisses his own observations most of the time.

Eventually he will be the second person that Loid tells about his powers.

We start with a dark horror and possibly scifi about ethics in science, immortality, and an outlaw fugitive alien plot as a boy finds himself part of a group of immortals declared legally inhuman. While I have some misgivings about Oh No I Was Secretly A Creature All Along plots, I do fucking love horror and there’s a lot of ways for those plots to hit hard in the trans and gay and autism organs and be really important!!!!

Dimension W

The New Tesla Energy Corporation has monopolized the fourth dimension and the coils that connect to it. A duo of bounty hunters, one human and one robot, make money via repossessing illegal coils and seek out the answer to the mysteries within the dimension. I really wanna watch this one for a few reasons, the primary one of which is 'there are multiple fat women'. It seems to have freaks and weirdos and fun times, and its comedy is emphasized more than most of the other ones on this list so it might give some needed levity!

Kyoukai no Kanata

A bumbling monster hunter with blood powers meets an immortal via trying to shank him and ends up in an arrangement where she'll keep trying to kill him to boost her confidence while hunting monsters in what I hope is a monster-of-a-week show that came highly recommended by a friend as her favorite anime, or one of her favorites, so i have high hopes! Script's by the hibike euphonium guy and the power system seems quite interesting!

Air

A puppeteer (if he’s as good as Sakon will remain to be seen) stops his Road Trip To Meet A Golden Sun Jupiter Summon to stay for a bit in a town and, as happens to anyone who stops for too long, gets attached to the place and also meets a girl who might be said jupiteresque being. My friend informs me that it's gorgeous, sounds amazing (so I'll make sure to get clips), and has "nice sad vibes"!!! And it’s…listed in a “provincial horror” listing… hoho

Heike Monogatari

A child who can see ghosts and the future walks tirelessly through the tragedy of the war between the Taira and Minamoto families before the dawn of the first shogunate. It's wildly beloved by a friend of mine, and also centers a historical event i know some but not all about and definitely need to know more about the Taira side of. Seems like a beautiful drama, one I could lose my heart over.

SSSS Gridman

Digital kaiju! Digital hero! Digital amnesia! A monster of the week show about an unknown amnesiac summoning and merging with Hyper Agent Gridman to fight digital, possibly virtual monsters while making friends(?) in the real world! It's the one thing Tsubaraya Productions has that isn't Ultraman, and I expect some tokusatsu vibes from it along with the mecha stuff, i've also heard it has gay girl megatron??

Akudama Drive

It's a prison break and crime story set in a tech dystopia, starring a scene girl shoplifter, and featuring a bevvy of unpersoned convicts in what seems like an excellent ensemble clusterfuck!!! The Danganronpa crew made this thing! It's also beloved by a friend of mine, and I've heard it'll be a generally excellent tragedy of a time

Canaan

A reporter gets saved from assassins by a woman she might do yuri with, and the summaries I’ve found seem to imply a plot about terrorism and mystery! It’s a Type-Moon work that isn't part of the fate, tsukihime, OR melty universes! It might still have magecraft, but it's tagged sci-fi too, and a type moon take on scifi sounds interesting... it’s also based on. *checks wikipedia* a…perfect-Famitsu-score visual novel for the Nintendo Wii. So I might need to dig out some old hardware to watch this thing. For fun’s sake!

Killing Bites

A guy unintentionally becomes the underground wrestling promoter of a ?werewolf? Woman who murders his friends and wins him a shitload of money. The end goal? According to the summary, control of the economy!!! This was recommended as garbage and good lord I need garbage so much good god I need to put some trash inside of me.

sure!! the most obvious one is sharp objects by gillian flynn, which you probably already know at least by name if you haven't read it or watched it already — it's a textbook emotional incest narrative, one that invests all the women and girls in the house in a relationship that only gets murkier and murkier.

i have heard very interesting things about jawbone by monica ojeda, which i have not yet read personally, but which i have been told is an all around meh novel with a fascinating lesbian oedipus narrative trapped inside of it about a daughter basically subsuming her mother.

thicker than water by kathryn harrison is a must, a fascinating read about a girl who's lost her parents and who endlessly reminisces and fantasizes about them, especially her mother.

in a similar vein, luminal by isabella santacroce is a short, scatological and very trippy novel about two ambiguously lesbian teenage prostitutes living the life in mitteleurope, and our narrator has a near-obsessive fascination for her mother that borders and occasionally touches on the sexual.

sputnik sweetheart by haruki murakami is a novel i can only describe as "if carol was explicitly about the younger woman's desire for a mother figure" — it's not particularly good or compelling, it's your average murakami novel and the narrator is painfully annoying, but it's definitely tropey enough and readable enough if you're looking for some older woman/younger woman motherly projection content.

kind of an out of place recommendation among so many contemporary novels, but you should absolutely read proserpine by mary shelley, a devastating poetic drama about the rape of persephone and demeter's search for her which leans heavily and almost incestuously into their desperate love and longing for each other.

if you're into comics, i can recommend are you my mother? by alison bechdel, a mostly-autobiographical companion piece to the far more famous and father-centric fun home. if you like manga, you need to read kyoko okazaki's helter skelter and pink, both in general and also because the themes of unhealthy attachment between mother and daughter are delightfully executed, especially in pink.

i should also mention the storied tradition in yuri manga of giving the protagonist a mother complex, starting from shiroi heya no futari by ryoko yamagishi (one of the first ever yuri, and a wonderfully melodramatic story at that) and culminating in taiyaki nakamura's fun slice of life stories about teen girls ceaselessly trying to seduce their own mothers (yuru oyako, 1 x 1/2).

honestly I like it enough. It’s not something I’m nuts over (cause frankly pairings in general are something I don’t care for) but it’s something that I appreciate for what it offers up: Two old women who had lost everything at some point being there for each other.

I think it’s sweet how BlueStar and YellowFang are portrayed in the new ITW Graphic Novel but also unfortunately people don’t care about those moments because I never see waves of posts about that one panel of BlueStar and YellowFang rubbing their faces against each other while blushing; I see waves of posts about stupid fucking FireGrey I don’t care about them. Never does the old woman yuri get any attention it’s always the young man yaoi that gets fans screaming and crying and spam posting about it. Anyways preddy good pairing if I must say so myself.

FireStar/OneStar

I like it in the case of FireStar getting divorced once again and only in that case. I see some portrayals of this done in a way that makes it seem like the final straw that broke them up was OneStar being such an oh so meanie weenie to poor lil FireStar. When really it’s more likely for them to have broken up because OneStar got sick of how FireStar had treated him during the whole Windclan Civil War thing, practically forcing him into the position of leader when he didn’t want it.

it’s something that the fans use to further demonize OneStar. Like yeah he was mean as fuck to FireStar but you’re all annoying as fuck about it and also are wrong in how you view his rudeness towards him

Bumble/TurtleTail

Very solid pairing that I myself enjoy a lot. In recent times though I’ve felt my perception of it change in a little more of a negative light, but in a good way.

don’t get me wrong I really like the idea of a healthy TurtleBumble relationship but knowing what went down with Bumble in the books, it makes me imagine a relationship of the two that started out amazingly but slowly withered away because of TurtleTail practically turning her back against Bumble when she needed help the most. I like the idea of Bumble becoming more and more angry towards her because of this and TurtleTail feeling great amounts of grief and guilt but still unable to fully accept responsibility for Bumbles eventual death. With her even going as far as never truly apologizing to Bumble and kind of dunking on her physical abilities on Bumbles fucking deathbed.

The idea of Bumbles ghost growing angrier at this whole thing is amazing to me and the thought of Bumble herself being scared when she realizes she actually hates TurtleTail now is just -Chefs kiss- perfect.

or What Methods Of Manipulating Magic Are Looked Down Upon (using magic with a physical object as a magic focus to help visualize, guide, and well. focus. your will. as opposed to the Proper way of doing things which is just doing that straight from your brain)

or What Ginger Actually Researches (the constantly opening portals to other worlds and the network of magic that sustains their world)

or The Weirdness Of What The Wizard World Is (a pocket in the void between worlds kept stable and living by a network of magic created by the world’s founder long ago)

anyway here’s old woman yuri lore. tl;dr — two failgirls with very little self respect meet and get into a completely unsustainable arrangement. what happens next will shock you!

rosemary was from a declining noble magic family and was pressured by her terrible father to maintain their family’s position and reputation under threat of them losing everything, but she was really Bad at using magic in the “proper” way. ginger was a clever and inventive mind wrt all sorts of methods of doing magic and really wanted to use her skills to better her world, but she was an absolute nobody who had left her terrible family behind, had trouble interacting with others, and hated the spotlight

they met at school and became friends because they recognized something in each other. shared loneliness and pressure and need to Do Something Important and fear of failing. the were really each other’s only real friend. and soon, they also realized that their skills were complementary.

so they decided to work together to succeed. basically, rosemary would be the face and ginger would be behind the scenes. ginger would help rosemary seem like she was good at magic by letting rose take credit for her stuff + rosemary would provide ginger with the resources and connections she needed for her work.

this arrangement was a little deranged, but it was fine to both of them. ginger was horrifically socially awkward to the point where she was alright being behind the curtain as long as she knew her stuff was helping people. rosemary was terrible at magic and desperately wanted to keep her family’s position, be secure and respected within this society, and not lose it all.

in school, this mostly took the form of ginger doing rose’s work for her + rose vouching for ginger and getting her certain learning opportunities. as adults, it took the form of ginger letting rose take credit for the stuff she made and use her Rich Person Nepotism to get it where they agree it will be best used + rose getting ginger funds and space in which to do her work.

rose worked her way into higher levels of power, ginger was furthering her research, and they were doing great. rosemary even had a kid! and ginger helped tutor that kid. everything was fine.

until 10 or so years after rosemary’s kid was born.

rosemary decided to use (insert a new vaguely defined invention by ginger) for some purpose that a) was never what ginger intended for it, b) had the potential to be a harmful misuse of this kind of magic, and c) would only benefit the other powerful people whom rose wanted to maintain her position among. politics!!!

ginger was a big idealist, so she was like absolutely not! we do this to help people! do you not see the consequences that could happen? and rosemary was like uhhh, it’s not gonna happen because you’re good at this. and even if it does it’ll be fine. what’s your problem? it’ll secure our futures!

and ginger had the sudden and horrific realization that their priorities have always been totally different. so she was like. rosemary i do not know how to tell you that this will hurt people and it won’t make anything better. and if you do not realize this. i am out of here. and rosemary was like wow, are you fucking turning on me NOW? right when we’ve almost got what we always wanted? for no good reason at all? what about loyalty?????

so uhhhh. ginger left and promised she wouldn’t tell anyone about their arrangement. but in retaliation for the perceived betrayal, rosemary stole all ginger’s documents and blueprints and stuff and has been using them to fake it and make it ever since. ginger was pissed when she realized, but it’s not like she could do anything. she doesn’t really have any recognition or name to speak of. so she went to go live a quiet life doing portal research / world hopping in the backwater of cinnabar quadrant because at the very least she still has her magic college degree.

ginger’s bitter and tries not to think about rosemary but she still catches the news and sees that rose continues to ruthlessly push onward on the same path. ginger feels like rosemary will eventually back herself into a corner and ginger’s not sure if she’ll be happy to see it happen. because when it happens it won’t be good for anyone

rosemary rationalized what happened as ginger betraying her because ginger thought she was better than her and rose was nothing without her and she only liked her because she thought she could always order rose around. so rose is better off without her anyway!!!!!!

so they’re not friends anymore. since then ginger has gotten better at talking to others and having more self respect out of necessity, and she has begun to take pride and not shame in being recognized for her work. but rosemary has changed very little, aside from becoming more desperate not to lose what she has. ginger’s work can only carry her so far
