Lily: Hi I'm Lily and after I got sent to magic school, all emotional ties with my muggle sister, who regards me as a freak, and my mother, who was more sensitive to her side, were severed. They didn't tell me when my dad died. I brought 3 musketeers.

Remus: Hi I'm remus and I got bit by a werewolf when I was 5, then my dad offed himself because of it. I brought moon pies.

James: Hi I'm James and I fell into limerence with someone and incessantly pursued them for over a year in ways that were detrimental to both of our mental states. I was so public about it I don't even need to say who it was. My mother sat me down one day and said "was it something your father and I did, something we said, that convinced you you need to beg someone to love you? to let you show them love?" and that broke something in me. We're chill now though, and I have coping techniques that work for me while still allowing me to be my expressive self, so I brought mr. goodbars.

Peter: Hi I'm peter and my animagus is literally a rat. I brought sour patch kids.

Dorcas: Hi I'm dorcas and my pureblood parents will never say it to my face but they wanted me to be a boy. To compensate I was sure to always get top marks, be well liked, and experience gender dysphoria. I burnt out before our 5th year, and learning radical acceptance in the place of trying to guess unspoken rules saved my life. I brought smarties.

Regulus: Hi I'm regulus and in order to be sure my mother didn't assassinate my brother for running away, I stayed behind in the abusive household and eventually became a deatheater to keep my cover, hunting down one bald headed bitch's horcruxes until it literally almost killed me. I think it did kill me in some lives. and I brought the starburst.

Mary: Hi I'm Mary and due to blood supremacist bigots, I have to go to school with people who want me to die just for having the audacity to exist. The muggle world is also like this. The school I go to does not matter in this scenario. I brought mentos for the salad and a bottle of soda for the show.

Evan: Hi I'm evan and my ex went on holiday to another country for 3 months, told me we could write to stay connected, they didn't, broke up with me via owl while still on said vacation, and then came to talk to me in person about that, denied that it was an active choice to disconnect from me, then tried to put the onus of any friendship to follow on just me. We haven't spoken since. Also I'm a sex positive, but also trauma affected ace, it was an open relationship, and they somehow still managed to be shady/inconsiderate about hooking up with someone on the vacation. I brought blow pops.

Pandora: Hi I'm pandora and sometimes I get prophetic dreams so vivid I can't tell when I wake up. Sometimes, though the future is not stagnant, I see my friends die :) I brought airheads.

Marlene: Hi I'm marlene and I have 5 brothers. 3 of them accept my nonbinary identity. The rest, and my parents, blatantly ignore that I use they/them pronouns. Then they told me if I don't have children as an adult I won't be worth visiting because it's my job as a pureblood to produce an heir. So I went to St. Mungos and got sterilized. I brought baby ruth candy.

People talk about Remus, Reggie and Lily being a power trio, which, fair enough and I do love their dynamic. But not enough people talk about Evan Rosier and Sirius Black secretly bonding over their shared protective nature for Regulus. They don't like each other, they barely tolerate each other ffs, but nobody can compare to them when it comes to being the Regulus defence squad (alongwith Barty and Pandora). They know Reg can protect himself and they trust him enough, but they're every bit of the scary overprotective brothers simply because they care so much. They don't fight his battles for him, they just prevent anyone from ever attempting to do anything malicious.

Barty had always truly been Regulus's best friend, and that includes not liking Sirius because he thinks Reg deserves better.

But Evan knows better. He knows Reg's pretense to dislike his gryffindor blood traitor brother, he knows how much he still cares for Sirius's opinions, because that never changed. Sirius was always the most important to Reg, because he truly loved him, his true family. It wasn't a belief, Reg just knew Sirius loves him, his little brother, just like the sun rises in the east, Sirius would always be there for Reg. Contrary to what people thought, Sirius didn't dislike Reg because he was a Slytherin, as he was still his Reggie. Regulus craved the approval from his parents, but with Sirius, it was just there. He knew, if he asked, Sirius would do anything for him.

Evan had very few people he could trust to call his friends. Regulus was without a doubt one of very few people he would kill for, and one of the two people he would die for. He knows that just like how him and Barty are important for Reg, just like how Reg absolutely loves Pandora, Sirius is just as important, if not more so. It was an easy choice, a deal really, a friendship of convenience, a mutual fulfillment.

He himself distrusted Sirius, but knew just enough to know Sirius would not betray Reg's trust. Sirius distrusted Evans perhaps even more than he disliked him, but he knew he needed someone in the snake's pit, someone who actually cared about Reg, to know he was safe.

They worked in surprising harmony, and read between the lines to know much more than what they initially let on. It wasn't really affection between them, far from it, but the common motivation was shockingly stronger than their hate. A quiet companionship, they never put a name on. They got along fine enough to know the clues they spoke while in the facade of being absolute enemies in front of others, clues to know when Reg was in danger, because regardless of what people thought of Sirius, he was plenty cunning, had ambition in spades, he just valued bravery more, for he wanted to be brave enough to publically stand against the disgusting beliefs his parents had.

But he understood the slytherin's usual dancing around the words just fine, vague attempts at warning, and Evan was brave enough to pursue a "friendship" even though he never trusted Sirius. Because courage was never just a single house's trait. Because ambition was not something exclusive to just one house either.

And because one thing that made them so alike was that they were loyal to a fault, loyal to their respective houses, loyal to their beliefs, but above all loyal to the people they chose as family, loyal to the people they loved.

You have been around them for a while, you knew them but never had a word with any of  the four boys. Lily Evans, a fierce girl, whose personality and intelligence was paired with ginger hair and bright viridian eyes, had a few words with you, at a potion class. And her  good nature ignored the fact you were usually linked to a pure blood fanatic, Regulus Black. 

On said occasion, her words kept slipping through her mouth—she was surprised by your kindness and the way you’ve carried a light conversation about the day’s topic, since she expected you to be a complete asshole. She believed you could be a good friend, a good partner at class—as your intellect matched her own. Over the following weeks, she kept looking for you to start banal conversations, about classes, about anything. It was about time to meet her friends.

Three of them had a study meeting with Lily Evans, and they adored the girl, they won’t say no. “I think she’s Regulus' girlfriend?” James has said, when yours and Lily's blooming friendship became a topic. 

Sirius snorted, “Pff, that spineless idiot could never have a girlfriend. Haven’t I told you he's as cold as my progenitors? The only way he’s getting to that point is if they arrange something” He was unusually so bittersweet about his brother’s affairs. Since he stopped caring a long time ago. 

James smiled at his behavior, laid his books down on the table. And sat across Sirius and Remus. “We just saw them” 

“Maybe she pity him?” He earned a round of laughs. Remus had shocked his head, covering his eyes with a large hard at Sirius’ nonsense. 

“Yeah, most likely” James mocked him.

Remus eyes’ caught his ginger friend arm in arm with her new friend, you. “Speaking of the devil…” He said, warning his friends. 

They liked you in a beat. Sirius' first impression was that you were a complete opposite to his younger brother. You laughed at their lighthearted jokes and had a focused expression while they explained some of their pranks. It was nice and refreshing to have you around, it wasn’t always, but it was often enough to have a sense of proximity. A belief and a feeling you were a friend to all of them. Your first impression of Sirius was meh—nothing less, nothing more than you expected. He had the most charming personality, an ounce of his attention was enough to make you feel like a radiant sun—a fake one tho. You knew his ways with girls, how they would fall to his feet with a smirk and a mischievous grin. Your confused feelings constantly met a wall when you saw his interactions with a potential love interest, even if it’d last a few weeks—days even. 

Regulus Black had collected the courage to ask you to be his girlfriend on a sunny, fresh spring morning — just a month before summer holidays. It was a question you have been expecting since you realized your romantic feelings for him, months ago. It was easy since he let you into his softe, most vulnerable side. Where you learned about his terrors and insecurities. Where you learned his need for reassurance —that you like him, that you love him— has its roots in his abused childhood, where his parents deprived him of pure and sincere affection, only praising him when he did things Walburga and Orion thought were correct. His way of understanding of love was tainted by his emotional baggage—it was something you thought you could work on together.

Four Gryffindor boys saw you both hand in hand, kissing in public. You didn’t see them, as your eyes could only lay on the boy staring lovingly at you. You were both in love. That love you crave and envy when you’re young and wild, a love seemingly pure and sincere at the surface, one that couldn’t be marred by anything or anyone, but one that was cursed by the first shared glance. You'd have to scavenge a bit to find its rotting foundations. That day Lily Evans and her kind self gave you a cold shoulder unmatched by the concern and guilt in her eyes. They boys didn’t acknowledge your presence. It lasted—and continued for a week, until you couldn’t bear with it.

You were glad you found the group hanging in the common room. Your presence was noticed at first by James, who tried to escape when his eyes met yours, Lily held his hand, keeping  him in his place.

“Can someone tell me what’s going on?” Sirius received a whiplash when he turned when he heard your voice. Now, all of them stared at you. “Like if i made a mistake i would want to apologize, but i don’t know what i did” Your distressed tone and how your voice broke were enough to make the older Black brother feel a pang of guilt. Like a stab at his heart by his own hand. Because it doesn’t matter how hurt he was when he saw you and Regulus’ holding hands—it didn’t matter because now he had hurt you, by isolating you from them, your friends. Thinking you did something wrong. 

The sand-like haired boy shared a quick look with Sirius, as saying you, and only you can fix this. It was his responsibility. “It’s okay, i’ll explain to her” He had said and the rest of them flew out of the room in a blink. 

Now alone, he had focused on your red rimmed eyes, on how you bite the insides of your mouth. “I’m sorry”

You let out a humorless laugh, “What does that mean?”

His breath faltered, “I shouldn’t have done this—I was angry I guess” You nodded, confused. “I don’t know how to say this, huh” 

To catch Sirius Black struggling to find some words was a spectacle—nor of you enjoying it. It fueled your anxiety and desires to run back to Regulus’ soft gaze, the one he gave you when you told him you were going to fix whatever you’ve done. Maybe it was a mistake, maybe you should have let the time work it out for you. 

“Sirius, you’re scaring me, please,” You tilted your head, getting close to him. It destroyed him—your fucking worried eyes. 

“I liked you, and you ran to my brother’s arms!” His tone was harsh, and he crossed his arms in his chest when you shot him a confused look. Like a spoiled child, who wants something he can’t have.

“So you decided to not talk to me again, without saying anything?” He couldn’t utter a word, he felt dizzy, even. He couldn’t understand how he was in that situation. “You know, I liked you too, for a while, but I knew if I told you, you’d have broken my heart. That’s who you are” 

He breathed in, appearing trapped. “It was different with you!”

“How—how was it different? —No, you know what, save it. I didn’t deserve any  this” You pointed furiously your index finger in his direction. 

He bit his lip. He would rather see you angry than put up with your understanding side. He hurted you, and maybe he didn’t deserve to be forgiven, for now. “Sorry, it's not gonna happen again. Don’t know what else I can do” 

So he didn’t do anything.

Summer came over, distancing you from them. You tried to close the wound, because they never apologized, and Sirius did a terrible job at it. But it didn’t matter anymore, because  you probably won’t see them again. They graduated and you’ve heard James and Lily were trying to have a baby—feeling the need to leave something behind. You were afraid to reach for them, to send a letter congratulating them, to know what they’d do now. You missed Lily and developed a hate for Regulus’ older brother and his poor emotion management. A feel that grew everyday like an undergrowth, one you watered with self doubt.

“I knew he liked you,” Regulus’ had confessed some time after. “He stared at you as if you were a piece of meat. Another girl he can ruin and then left” 

You wouldn’t have suspected anything if his eyes wouldn’t give him away  — he felt guilty.

Your breath wavered at the realization, and Regulus knew. “You’re cruel, I’ve been in love with you for months and you only asked me to be your girlfriend because you saw Sirius as a threat?” Your voice was delicate, slow but unsteady, as your own insecurities jeopardize your calm.

Regulus had shook his head rapidly, with a mind ridden by guilt. “I felt the same, I was just scare you didn’t want me that way—He just made me realize I had so save you” 

You snorted. “Pff, Save me?” 

His head gave up, hanging low, avoiding your eyes. “I’m sorry I was wrong, please don’t be angry at me” He begged in a low tone, barely audible. But it was sincere and ras.

“I’m not—“

“—Nor disappointed” You smiled. It was real Regulus. It was Regulus’ realizing his decayed stability. And you had promised you'd go through this. 

Warm hands greeted his cold, sharp cheeks. Held his head and mind—quite literally. “I’m not, Reggie,” It was heaven, as your thumbs traced his cheekbones. “I’m just sad, you needed — you waited until someone gave me attention to act. You wouldn’t have said anything…” In such a short time your self deprecating ruminations had leaked through your conscious mind. But you won’t unfold your heart in this situation. 

His head lingered near your shoulder, craving more of your touch, but so afraid to ask for more than he thought he deserved. “I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt you. I’m sorry, can you forgive me?” He kept apologizing, not raising his voice. 

You push his head up. You hadn’t expected to find tears at the edge of his silver eyes. “You’re forgiven, just don’t do that again, please” Like a caged animal set free, his arms snaked around your torso, flushing you against him. But it wasn’t enough—he craved more. 

Shoving his nose into your shoulder, Regulus had tried to remember your scent. To have it forever stuck in his mind. “I’ll try. I’ll do anything” A short silence filled your ears. “Do—do you still love me?” He muffled against the upper side of your left collarbone. 

You placed a short, tender kiss on his cheek. “I love you, Reggie” A promise, it was a promise. All you could do was give, give everything to him.

Foundations putrid and all, when pieces fell, they’d remain together glued by the sweet but dangerous desire of being needed and to need each other. Glued by three-word promises.

Just saw your post and I was wondering how you would write any of your ships confessing. Like how would they realise they're in love? How would they tell the other?

I'm about to go on a Long Rant so, bear with me !

- Jegulus, for me these two had to build a sense of trust and friendship before confessing their feelings. James has a bad history with coming off too strong and Regulus' insecurities make it hard for him to jump headfirst into anything without overthinking it. So regardless of how smitten they are with each other, they start off slow and gentle, work their way up to stealing glances and touches and feeling hopeful about their feelings being reciprocated, and then they'll have a chat about it, confess in the astronomy tower while stargazing and sharing the softest of kisses (can you tell I'm obsessed with them?)

- for Wolfstar, I am a firm believer in them falling in love at first sight, but not being able to pinpoint the feeling due to their young age. So the moment they start to understand what causes their hearts to beat harder when they're too close or why they simply can't take their eyes oof of each other, they are a tangle of limbs and would confess after a steamy makeout session. I also like the friends with benefits to lovers trope, especially when it's Remus pining and Sirius not realizing how in love he is. But overall I'm a firm believer in Sirius confessing the SECOND it makes sense to him. He's just not the type to think it through beforehand.

- Dorlene 🥰🥰🥰 I love the rivals to lovers trope with them. Whether it's quidditch or school, both of them are too talented and too brilliant, and confuse the excitement they feel around each other with a competitive streak. Up until the moment one of them is dating someone else, and the bitterness and jealousy they feel is too distinct to be mistaken for anything else. Cue the pining, then hopefully the kissing and dating because for me, they are made for each other in every possible way.

-Rosekiller are friends with benefits. They are both too unhinged to start it off in any other way. They're paired up on their first year with Regulus, becoming instant friends, wreaking havoc together. Then they start to grow and discover themselves, and nobody is better for them than each other. But after years of them fooling around without feeling the need to date or sleep with anyone else, they figure out that they're basically dating already, and they just settle into it more comfortably.

- For lily, I see her as a lesbian, but I'm still discovering whether I prefer her dynamic with Pandora or Mary. Maybe both. But yeah, I don't really have any specific thoughts about it yet.

Warnings: reg is a confused boi, a bit of angst

Word Count: 636 words

A/N: Aroace Regulus, my beloved <3.and I think this is the longest one I've written. This might not be accurate. I'm not aroace myself, so I'm sorry if I got something wrong!

The crackling bonfire cast a warm glow over the group. James animatedly recounted the highlights of his latest date with Lily, who nestled comfortably against him. Peter sat nearby, listening intently.

Marlene and Dorcas roasted marshmallows, their playful banter filling the air. Evan lounged with his head resting in Barty’s lap, eyes half-closed, but a smile played on his lips as Barty complained about studying for the umpteenth time to Remus.

Remus leaned back against Sirius's legs. Sirius perched on a tree stump above him, effortlessly charming as he cracked jokes and joined in the stories.

Across the circle, Regulus frowned at the couples, arms crossed. Sirius looked at his brother, wanting to go to him but hesitating.

With a sigh, he tapped Remus's shoulder and caught his eye, nodding toward Regulus, silently asking for support. Remus offered an encouraging smile, nudging Sirius gently. "Go," he said.

And who was Sirius to ever question his words?

“Hey,” Sirius began, “Mind if I join you?”

Regulus shrugged, “Not like I could stop you,” he replied.

The brothers had only just started to mend their relationship, so Sirius felt a need to be careful. “What’s on your mind?” he asked.

Regulus stared into the flames. “I don’t know,” he admitted, “Everyone here is so… wrapped up in their feelings. And I don’t… understand.”

Sirius frowned. “You don't understand feelings?"

"I don't understand romantic feelings. There was this guy a year above. I—I thought I liked him. He was charming, and everyone else seemed to think he was perfect. I thought maybe I should feel something for him, too.”

“But you didn’t?”

Regulus shook his head, frustration creeping into his voice. "I tried. I really did. I wanted to feel that spark, that excitement everyone talks about. But I just... didn’t."

Sirius didn't know what to say to that. He didn't know how to understand.

Regulus turned to Sirius, curiosity glinting in his eyes. "How did you fall in love with Remus? What told you?"

Sirius paused, surprised by the question. "It wasn’t an overnight thing, really. It crept up on me."

"How?"

“At first, it was just his laugh. I remembered hearing it across the common room, and it would make everything else fade away. Then, it was the way he listened—like he genuinely cared about what I had to say, no matter how stupid. It made me feel seen."

“And then?” Regulus pressed, trying to understand something foreign to him.

“Then it was the little things,” Sirius continued. “The way he’d always remembered my favorite snacks or how he’d nudged me when I got too loud. But it was more than that. I wanted to be there for him, to support him when he was feeling down. I wanted to share my world with him.”

Regulus still looked puzzled. “But how did you know it was love and not friendship?”

Sirius chuckled. “I think it was when I realized I constantly thought about him, more when he wasn't around. I wanted to know everything about him, not just the surface stuff. I always wanted to be around him and felt this warmth in my chest whenever I saw him smile.”

Regulus furrowed his brow. “And it just clicked for you?”

“Yeah,” Sirius said, nodding. “It clicked when I realized I didn’t just want to be his friend; I wanted to be something more.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever felt that way about anyone. Not even close.”

Sirius placed a hand on Regulus’s shoulder. “That’s okay, you'll figure it out. You have all of us to help you."

“I just wish I understood it better," Regulus mumbled.

“If we all understood each other and ourselves, the world would be a hell of a lot different,” Sirius said.

Regulus sighed heavily and looked at his older brother. "You quoting that from Lupin?"

"Maybe." He grinned.

They sat together for a while before Sirius got up and turned to his brother. "Come on," he nodded toward the others.

Regulus frowned. "Are you sure?"

"Positive."

Stars. Sirius also sees the sky from his prison cell and what does he see? Oh that’s right the moon!

Anti-Hero

We had two theories for this one first being Regulus bcoz of the self deprecating vibe and “I'll stare directly at the sun (James) but never in the mirror”

But we could also see it as Mary post-war? It's hard to describe why, but everyone sees her as the Anti-Hero cause she saved herself even tho she had full right to do that

Snow on the Beach

For this one I was utterly confused and absolutely useless and Marls came up with this interpretation herself

This song is Sirius's perspective specifically during the wolfstar forgiveness phase after the prank. "You wanting me tonight feels impossible".

Both of us agree that this song screams all the Black children because none of them chose this town (family) and dreamt of getting out, I mean the whole song recounts a young person who longs for love but eventually understands that they are on their own and always have been afterall whatever you do you can never escape the black family curse can you?

Midnight Rain

“He was sunshine, I was midnight rain”

I mean do I even need to say anything? Its jegulus bcoz they r the literal definition of opposites attract even tho they loved each other they were born on two different sides of a war which inevitably became the reason of their end.

Both of us agree it could be both Regulus or Dorcas because canonically Regulus knew about the horcruxes, and died while deceiving the dark lord and on the way to kill him (also bonus bcoz the final blow which made him take this decision was bcoz Voldemort exploited Kreature so Reg decided to get even) Dorcas on the other hand canonically had to be killed by Voldemort himself because she was posing as too big a threat to his empire

Lily about Severus and how even tho she  mourns and misses her friendship with him, it will never be worth more than her self respect and how she won’t let him walk all over her, a diamond’s gotta shine afterall ;)

To me this song is sooo obviously jegulus coz of the chorus alone, its James realizing that he’s falling in love again, this time with Regulus after pining after Lily for years. Just how when he thought he was “unlovable” and it was all doomed this sickly, victorian looking, snarky slytherin boy swoops in and steals his heart right out of his chest

Marls has her own hc for Emmary tho where basically Mary was in love with Lily but it was unrequited and then she had a situationship with Emmaline but ended up catching feelings which is so perfect for this song

Karma

"And I keep my side of the street clean, You wouldn't know what I mean"

Again I had no opinion on this song coz it felt like too happy and too upbeat a song for any of these miserable sods (I still love them ) but Marls swooped in with a brilliant interpretation which was that its from Dorcas’ pov to the slytherin trio basically throwing shade at them for choosing to stay and join the death eaters instead of leaving and fighting for the “right” side like her

Sweet Nothing

"They said the end is comin', everyone's up to somethin' I find myself runnin' home to your sweet nothings"

Now for this song we had differing views with me being a jegulus girlie while Marls being a jily girlie (we still love both the ships tho, we just have a preference)

To me the song is jegulus coz I see it as them expecting the inevitable end of their relationship and doom due to the impending war and their family’s differing views and them just trying to tune everything out to spend their limited time together and in love.

On the other hand Marls interpreted is as to when the Potters were in hiding with only each other and Harry for company. How they could see that the war was on full ride and they were at the centre of it while still trying to create some sweet and happy memories with their son

Mastermind

"I laid the groundwork, and then, Just like clockwork, The dominos cascaded in a line, What if I told you I'm a mastermind?"

(Try and tell me the whole bridge doesn’t scream Regulus Arcturus Black.) To me the song is about Regulus because the man literally was a mastermind, while being a death eater he planned to betray Voldemort by destroying a horcrux and he was actually successful in retrieving it tho maybe I’m a little biased due to his characterization in the fic only the brave (Marls also thinks the song could be about James bcoz of the bridge "To make them love me and make it seem effortless")

The Great War       

"I vowed I would always be yours, 'Cause we survived the Great War"

Marls didn’t really have an opinion on this one but for me it was very clearly wolfstar. First reason obviously being the fact that they are pretty much the only couple who actually survived the war (the first one that is, we all remember how the second one went). "Somewhere in the haze, got a sense I'd been betrayed" being how they both thought the other was the spy and the prank

Bigger Than The Whole Sky

"Every single thing I touch becomes sick with sadness, 'Cause it's all over now, all out to sea"

Now this could go two ways one being the black brothers,

(Since it in itself is talking about the person suffering due to a relationship when they were young and it even now haunts them I feel like this song could be interpreted many many ways bcoz all of the marauders era characters dealt with a lot of trauma at a young age)

"Was it because I'm a Black?" I’m sorry). They could see their relationship was straining, they kept waiting for the other to take a risk, a step to fix it and how even through their suspicions, they loved each other regardless

Hii! What are your personal headcanons about james and sirius friendship?

I've got soooooo many. In the end, I thought I'd share three big ones rather than a long list of small stuff.

Sirius and James were each other's first friend - as well as first best friend

Yes, I know, James was clearly adored by his family and had a great upbringing. But he was raised by very elderly parents, whose friends probably had grown up kids by the time James was born. I don't see him going to muggle school, so I've always pictured James as someone with a loving family, but no friend before starting at Hogwarts. Being an only child I think it could have made him lonely, even if he wasn't lonely in the 'he had no one around him who loved him', more lonely in the sense of 'he didn't really have anyone his own age to play with.'

Sirius, I hc to never having truly fitted in with his family. Some people are very much a product of their childhood and their parents believes - but some aren't. Some have always grown up knowing that their parents have (in their view) the wrong measure of things, and I've just always pictured Sirius to fall into this category. What his upbringing has brought to him, is the same confidence that privilege often brings - and has brought to both him and James, even if that privilege in Sirius' case, is also tainted by a cold and unloving childhood.

Like many, I do think he was closer to Regulus before Hogwarts, but I think he knew, deep down that they were different. I think we can categorically state that Sirius did not go to muggle school (lol), and I think the people his family surrounded themselves with would be people Sirius wouldn't enjoy, so yes, I picture both Sirius and James as friendless prior to Hogwarts.

This is part of why they take to each other so so quickly. They've always wanted a best friend, and suddenly they run into this person they just vibe/click with. In fact, if you read my fic you will notice that I've made all the marauders friendless ahead of befriending each other. I think Peter was bullied, Remus was obviously growing up in isolation (that's just canon), and I've explained my thoughts of Sirius and James. I think this dynamic made them super eager to protect and foster this friendship group.

Assuming Sirius would be able to cast a Patronus (not sure he could) after Azkaban, his would have been a stag

In fact, I wrote a one shot about this: I can't love you back to life, but I can live your love.

While this is entirely a headcanon, I have my reasons for it. Firstly, there's a strong parallel (and contrast!) between Severus Snape and Sirius Black. Both came from quite challenging home situations, both had some expectation of being in Slytherin (whether that was personal expectations or family expectations), but clearly had a need to differentiate themselves from their family, and both spent the majority of their adult life mourning and punishing themselves for a mistake that cost them their (former, in Snape's case) best friend's life. They also spent that adulthood trying to make it up to their best friend. YES there are lots of differences between the two, and that's an essay in itself, but fundamentally, Snape lives in the service of Lily's memory and Sirius in the service of James' memory. Snape's Patronus is a doe, and I don't think it's a stretch to assume that Sirius' would likewise be a stag.

From the wizarding world:

The form of a Patronus may change during the course of a witch or wizard’s life. Instances have been known of the form of the Patronus transforming due to bereavement, falling in love or profound shifts in a person’s character. 

And also from the wizarding world:

The Patronus is, after all, on its most fundamental level, ‘a pure, protective magical concentration of happiness and hope’. Happiness and hope, with which love often walks arm in arm.

The times Sirius is described to be at his happiest is when James was alive and happy, such as when Lily and James got married. Given he pretty much acts only in their memory and out of love for them and Harry in the books, just like Snape's whole essence is to keep Harry alive for Lily, it just makes sense in my head.

You pretty much did NEVER see one without the other

Wait? That's just canon!? Yes, of course it is, but it still opens it up for interpretation HOW literal those statements are, when the teachers, Fudge and Rosmerta discuss them.

I think they were pretty much inseparable, like: always, for a few different reasons. For one, the teachers are pretty strong worded in the way they describe this friendship:

‘Do you remember who his best friend was?’ ‘Naturally,’ said Madam Rosmerta, with a small laugh. ‘Never saw one without the other, did you? The number of times I had them in here – ooh, they used to make me laugh. Quite the double act, Sirius Black and James Potter!’ Harry dropped his tankard with a loud clunk. Ron kicked him. ‘Precisely,’ said Professor McGonagall. ‘Black and Potter. Ringleaders of their little gang. Both very bright, of course – exceptionally bright, in fact – but I don’t think we’ve ever had such a pair of troublemakers –’ ‘I dunno,’ chuckled Hagrid. ‘Fred and George Weasley could give ’em a run fer their money.’ ‘You’d have thought Black and Potter were brothers!’ chimed in Professor Flitwick. ‘Inseparable!’ ‘Of course they were,’ said Fudge. 

In the series, you do really never see Fred and George apart, and we're not going to go into when that changes. I don't think the parallel is by chance, even without the whole 'trouble-maker' aspect.

Also, the mirrors. Sorry, they had to speak to (or pull faces at?) each other during separate detentions? It was that bad to be apart for a few hours? I am not even sure it's cute. It's clearly co-dependent- and unhealthy, but it's fiction and we love them for it.

Finally, we actually never see James and Sirius apart in all the flashbacks we have during the story (including the 800 word short JKR? wrote), until James is in hiding. Like: wedding photos of James and Lily? Yes, but Sirius is also there. From the moment we learn who Sirius is (not counting PS/SS mentioning him by name), he is present by James' side.

Does that mean I think Lily and James went on dates with Sirius? No, of course not, but aside from romance, I think they were pretty hard to see apart. In fact, I'd say that in my long fic, I actually possibly underplay it a little because I do want Sirius and James to have scenes with the other marauders without the other one present. What level of inseparable am I thinking of?

Sirius would watch James' Quidditch practices unless the weather was too bad (which admittedly will have been a great deal in Scotland). And while I don't think JKR intended for Sirius to play Quidditch, I actually find it hard to picture him not getting on the house team so he could spend time with James, but that one, I do go back and forth on.

I think they absolutely took all the same subjects. It wasn't a question of what one of them wanted to take, it was always: what electives are we taking. I don't think the teachers basically did see them apart.

I am also not sure they would have chosen different occupations had they not joined the Order and lived off their inheritance, and it's not to romanticise their friendship. Ron follows Harry to become an Auror, and while I think Ron and Harry are closer than people remember, and are a strong parallel to Sirius and James (also the two did take the same subjects in school), I think Sirius and James were a bit closer still. So I find it hard to believe the two of them would choose different jobs. Even though both Sirius and James are, at least from what I see them as, independent people. They are just not independent of each other.

I think James, Lily AND Sirius became closer friends in year 6, which leads the way for James and Lily dating in year 7, as Lily increasingly feel confident that the two boys have started to mature, crowned by James becoming Head Boy.

I very much believe James and Sirius moved in together first after Hogwarts, and that James wanted them to have a few years together just being boys, but that the war just sped everything up. Also, in case you saw my 'I recently went to a wedding' post, that best man lived with the bride and groom for a LONG time before they got their own place, so I do sort of headcanon Lily to have moved in with them both before she and James got married (I also think they got married not that long before Harry was conceived - but that is a different post)

And so on.

What I certainly don't buy, is the number of posts where Sirius and Remus walks into a room and start talking to James. Nope. Sirius and James might walk into a room and start talking to Remus. Doesn't matter if Sirius and Remus were romantically involved (which I don't hc) or not. Sirius and James were hard to find apart. Most of that is canon, some of that is headcanon.

Time to pack up, congratulate myself on another too long post about how I obviously got everything right (don't worry, most of my reasoning is truly just explaining how it ended up making sense in my head), and say mischief managed.

okay but instead of muggle!aunt!reader that’s Lily’s little sister imagine wizard!uncle!reader that’s Jame’s little brother. him being the first to arrive at Godric’s Hollow but quickly Sirius Black arrives too. both are devastated until they see Peter but no words need to be spoken as the boys share a look and immediately attack the fucking rat. of course there isn’t a wizard in England that believes the reader would be capable of killing his big brother so Sirius is let off the hook as the blame of rightfully placed on Peter as it should have been in the first place. when the reader discovers Dumbledore intends to give Harry to the Dursley family, the reader pretty much goes “no” and basically steals him until McGonagall tells Dumbledore to let them be. so baby Harry could be raised in a flat in Diagon Ally or maybe a cottage in Hogsmead or even Lily’s childhood home on Spinner’s End as it seems like the one place they probably wouldn’t find either Potter boys.

maybe he’s born the same year as Regulus and the two become friends? maybe he’s a spy for the order that informs Sirius that Regulus isn’t so bad?? maybe he’s able to prevent Regulus from drowning after drinking the potion??? just imagine all of Sirius’ jokes about them being the ‘second generation’ of the Black/Potter duo.

Yesss!!!! I’ve often thought about doing something like a Wizard!Uncle!Reader with Harry. I mean we have Muggle!Aunt!Reader on Lily’s side, why not have a Wizard!Uncle!Reader on James’ side? It would be amazing! Especially for Harry.

I could see Wizard!Uncle!Reader never having really liked Peter Pettigrew. He just never really trusted the guy and certainly didn’t think that he belonged in his brother’s group of friends but James just went along with it so the Reader bit his tongue and went along with it too. But he would continue to keep his guard up when it came to Peter. Not that the Reader thought Peter was smart or cunning, just scummy and cowardice in his opinion.

I could see Sirius and Remus being pretty protective of James younger brother, more likely after James’ death especially if the Reader looked so much like him. I mean James was probably already pretty protective of his brother too but he also knew his brother could handle himself and would only involve himself behind the scenes or when he really needed too. Merlin help if Severus tried anything with the Reader, James wouldn’t hold back from kicking his ass. (Oh my glob, magine Severus having a crush on the Reader?!?!)

I wholeheartedly adore the idea of the Reader and Regulus being best friends. Like, I just imagine one of the times Sirius went to hangout at the Potter’s he dragged Regulus with him since he knew the Reader was the same age and basically forced a play date between the two. I wouldn’t put it past James and Sirius plotting to get their brothers to become the best of friends just like the two of them so that they could keep this Potter/Black tradition going, even if they had to force it on their brothers until they fell into it themselves. I also think it would fit so perfectly if the Reader ended up in Slytherin, not only to further the friendship between Regulus and him, but also to give Severus a heart attack every time he’s in the common room or in the boy’s dormitory given that the Reader most likely resembles James quite a bit.

I definitely see Regulus coming to the Reader about his plans to thwart the Dark Lord’s endeavors and him being all for sacrificing himself only for the Reader to be like “Nah, we’re not doing that.” The Reader is all for thwarting Voldemort but is adamant about putting more thought into it so that Regulus doesn’t have to lose his life over it. Of course he wouldn’t want to lose his best friend so he’ll do everything to make sure he comes out of it unscathed, or as unscathed as either of them can get.

When Harry’s born, the Reader would be such a devoted and doting uncle. He had Sirius definitely have scheduled babysitting days only for both of them to still pop up to take up baby Harry’s time and attention when it’s the other’s allotted time to spend with the baby. And whenever the Reader comes around he always drags Regulus with him. It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to imagine the Reader persuading Regulus to move in with him after graduating Hogwarts hence why they’re always together. (Maybe they’re just really good bros or maybe they’re lovers, who knows? Why not be both?🤷🏻‍♀️)

When everything goes down, I could see James and Lily instead making the Reader their trusted secret keeper. He would keep their location under lock and key which would more then not lead to his brother and Lily’s lives being spared, along with Harry’s. If they still went with Peter as their secret keeper or he somehow knew where they were going to be and still went to Voldemort about, the Reader would be hunting down his ass. He would at the very least be able to save Sirius from being put away but he wouldn’t rest until he killed Peter Pettigrew himself or saw him dead with his own eyes.

Even if Lily and James were to still meet their demise, the Reader, Sirius, Remus and Regulus would definitely be taking in Harry and raising him how James and Lily would have wanted. The Reader and Sirius would be the main ones to fight to keep Harry with them and to keep him from going with the Dursley’s. They may be likely to allow for Harry to interact with the Dursley’s on occasion if Dumbledore is so adamant about Harry being involved with them (mainly Petunia) due to Lily’s sacrifice and trying to keep that protection over Harry alive and active. But the Reader and Sirius won’t allow the Dursley’s to be Harry’s sole legal guardians, a family he’s force to be stuck with.

I like to imagine that Sirius, Regulus, the Reader and Remus all reside at 12 Grimmauld Place. Best to make use out of it while they have it really., not to mention it would give Harry more space to grow and run around in. It’s also definitely a coping thing for them all to be living with each other, especially for Sirius and Remus to be so close to what it feels like to have their best friend alive and well again, by their side like old times. Although the place would definitely go through a complete decorative and atmospheric change to make it more of a warm and welcoming home for all of them, especially if Harry’s going to be raised there. Walburga’s portrait just gets booted into a room no one ever goes into except Kreacher. The Reader comes up with an idea of him, Sirius, Regulus and Remus making up their own new family tapestry to put up instead of the old Black one. They of course add Lily and James to it along with Harry, as well as the good and worthy family members from all of their respective sides.

Harry would grow up happy, healthy and so very loved. He’ll never be told anything but the truth regarding his parents, never left in the dark about anything retaining to him or his family and the events that took place. He’d be allowed to know whatever he wanted about magic and more. And of course quidditch! Not to mention all the birthday parties he would have and the friends he would be able to invite over, especially from Hogwarts. Harry would be free to do as he pleased really, not having to be kept secret or act as if he didn’t exist at all.

When he finally does get his Hogwarts letter he and all his uncles are over the moon. They all would take him to Diagon Alley for his things and some other bits and bobs, they may even invite Hagrid along too just so he can be a part of it given how attached he grew to baby Harry. Overall it’s a wonderful experience that the Reader, Sirius and Remus wish that James and Lily could have been a part of too but are more than happy that they got to be by Harry’s side instead of him having to be on his own.

Also, as much as Sirius likes to gloat that he’s Harry’s favorite, it is very much the Reader who Harry is attached to the most. Not that anyone can blame him given that the Reader looks and acts very similar to James. Harry himself may also feel closer to the Reader because he does resemble his late father so much that Harry correlates himself and the Reader as being father and son rather than uncle and nephew.

Regulus welcomed September. A new year is borne from another reckoning. Another storm is weathered, another tempest yet to come. He’s happy to leave home behind. His forearm will sting for eternity but it’s a small price to pay. He knows no one can find out about this or his greater intention. His plan is set - leave nothing behind. His mother never cared for the spare. He has no friends, no allegiances. He has one thing though, undefined and unfinished, a weakness. Regulus is too selfish to leave it behind just yet.

“But you're breathing in my open mouth, you're the gun in my lips that will blow my brains out.”

Regulus can only watch. He watches James at breakfast, at Quidditch. Their friendship is tentative at best and forbidden at worst. He waits for only one thing - their Wednesday night rendezvous in the astronomy tower. He never asks for more than he is given. Regulus knows that he can’t show just how much this means to him - anything he treasures will inevitably be taken away. He can do this. He can long from afar. He survives his mother. He survives the misunderstanding of his brother. So he can do this. Loving James is never something that needs to be survived, it’s a lifeline, a tether.

“I wanna make you drive all night just because I said, "Maybe you should come over"”

“You could just leave?” James’ voice is quiet, hesitant even. Again, it’s Wednesday so they’re perched in the astronomy tower like owls. It makes Regulus laugh that this is the only time he feels free - when he’s trapped on a ledge, with the boy who risks his best friend just to be here. It makes Regulus almost happy to harbour the fleeting thought that he is important to James. “I’m not Sirius.” Regulus’ voice is firm, resolute. He knows his brother’s intention - always took the fall, always shouldered the blame, always sought to mark the path for Regulus behind him. What Sirius didn’t know wouldn’t hurt him. This conversation always makes its way back around. “It’s not a crime to leave something so terrible behind.” Regulus wishes he could believe James - if only he knew that the terrible things still await.

“Wanna make you fall in love as hard as my poor parents' teenage daughter.”

Another Wednesday. A repeat ritual except it is different. “She’s amazing.” His voice is rich and passionate. “She’s kind and smart and intelligent and just so, so pretty…” James’ voice trails off as Regulus pats his back sympathetically. This is all Regulus will allow himself. He doesn’t have much to say. Regulus will not beg for a love he doesn’t deserve. In fact he wouldn’t ever ask for much more than just company. He knows James deserves to be loved - a love that is pure and untainted. Regulus knows that he is ruined, that something so distorted and ugly could never exist in the bubble of James’ life. He looks at the blush on James’ cheeks and thinks of the girl who causes it. Regulus knows if he begs like a dog, surely he deserves to be put down like one too.

“She'll be the best you ever had if you let her.”

Lily watches James, the vacant stare present in his eyes. Every Wednesday night he’d go missing until Remus finally relented. Every Wednesday he’d go to the tower, just like he did before Regulus had left. Every Wednesday he’d sit on the ledge and wait to hear footsteps behind him. He’d wait for Regulus to sit down next to him and smile - like really smile, not just his usual smirk. Lily would gently rub her hands over James’ shoulders before resting next to him. She was used to the sharp inhale and soft exhale of disappointment. In this moment, and only this moment, she couldn’t be what James wanted. She wonders just how much love James has to give, if he can love someone and grieve another at the same time.

July 14 - Rejection | @jegulus-microfic | wc: 774 Part 10 of Medium!James AU Previous Part | First Part

It’s a nice, lazy Saturday. A couple days after the full moon, but Remus is doing alright so they’re not too worried about it. Said man is half-asleep on his bed, not doing much other than just laying with his eyes closed. James and Sirius are lounging on James’ bed, prattling away, and Pete is working on an essay. 

“So,” Sirius starts, turning to fully look at James, “James? Are you and Reggie together?”

James sighs, “No, we’re not.” They shake their head, “I’d like to date him, but…”

“Why don’t you?” Remus asks, his voice quiet, “It’s clear that he likes you back.”

“I don’t know.” James shakes their head, “I think part of it is that he’s still living with the Blacks, but he’s not making a move and I don’t want to push it. I don’t want to push my luck.” 

“It looked like you guys were about to kiss the other day.” Sirius teases.

“Felt like it, too…” they sigh, “And maybe we would’ve, if it weren’t for you.”

“Sorry.”

Pete snorts, “No you’re not.”

“I am absolutely not.” Sirius responds, grinning. Then his expression sobers up and he regards James with a soft look, “Just ask him out. I can guarantee that he likes you back and that he’d say yes.”

James shakes their head, closing their eyes and covering them with their arm, “I can’t. After dealing with all of Lily’s rejection, it’s just…”

“I know the two of you guys don’t like to talk about that,” Remus starts, “But maybe you should talk to Lily about it. You’ve cleared things up with your relationship now, I get that you’re friends, but I think you both need the closure of talking about it. And it might help you get the courage to ask Regulus out.”

“I’m not sure it will help, but I’ll try.” They stand up and head out of the dorm, saying goodbye to their friends. Marlene is out in the common room, talking quietly to Dorcas and leaning into the slytherin’s body, “Hey girls, do either of you know where Lily is?”

Marlene shoots them a look, “Do you not know where she is?”

“Not my turn with it.” They shake their head. 

“I think she’s in the library.” Marlene answers after a couple seconds, both Gryffindors ignoring the confused look that Dorcas is casting between the two of them at their words. 

“Thanks Marls.” And with that, they’re sweeping out of the common room and making their way to the library. They find Lily sitting at a table near the back, where she normally studies with Remus, her books and parchments splayed out all over the table in front of her. 

She looks up when she hears him, tucking a strand of hair that’s fallen from their ponytail behind her ear, “Hi, James.”

“Hey Lils.” James smiles, sitting down across from her, “Can we… talk.”

The girl makes a mark on the paper she was working on then puts her quill in its place, “Yeah, of course. What did you want to talk about?”

“Can we talk…” they clear their throat, “About the whole me having a massive crush on you and the constant rejection. Remus said it might help get both of us some closure.” Then quickly, they add, “But if you don’t want to, we don’t have to.”

“No, I think it would be good.” She smiles, “For both of us. Did you want to talk here or somewhere more private?”

James thinks for a moment before casting a silencing charm on the table and around them before humming, “I think this is fine.” Lily nods and the two of them get to talking.

It’s an eventful talk, both explaining their sides. The way that they were affected by the whole thing, a whole lot of apologizing from James--which Lily starts telling them to stop with after about the tenth apology, insisting that she forgives him and they didn’t walk away from the whole thing unscathed, before being met with resistance everytime because it was so much worse for her--and James can confidently say that the two of them will be walking out of the conversation feeling much better about their earlier years and with their friendship closer than before. 

Although, James can’t say that it helped them feel better about asking Regulus out. Comfortable with their friendship with Lily and walking out of a talk on what the issues were, James still can’t help but shake the possibility that no one would want them. Especially not someone like Regulus. 

And now they’re going to be spending winter hols with him.
