But given half a minute to think about it, Dick somewhere completely cut off from everyone but Bruce, no allies on hand, surrounded by enemies. Angry as he was at the lie, there was something about that he just fucking hated. or Thinking your brother is dead and then finding out he's been alive the whole time really has a way of making you rethink the relationship.

Do you think there are insanely few couples with Percy in this fandom? Characters that are well thought out and have a backstory. For example, Rachel and Percy are an interesting dynamic and a repetition of the Theseus myth with a different end to the story. Or Percy and Michael Yu (Apollo's son who fell off the bridge) It would be interesting if he survived: Percy feeling guilty for the fall, and Michael comforting him. Or Will and Percy, where both feel the guilt of the survivor (Will is the doctor, and Percy is the commander and leader), or the same Percy and Nico with their story and attempts to talk. Percy and Ethan would be a real pain in the ass with a story and explanations. But they don't nominate them as a couple? Like Pernico, they can be found, but everything else? Will's only fanfiction/The Percy I found was the one where he cheated on Apollo with Will, and Will cheated on Nico with Percy. And I really can't stand cheating.

I think it’s a shame how little other shops there are. Personally I love Percy and Ethan, because I think that dynamic is really interesting, particularly when you highlight the fact that Percy didn’t like the gods, and that Percy ends up thinking that Luke wasn’t necessarily wrong. I might be biased tho bc I am currently a Percy and Ethan oneshot bc I couldn’t find more than one good Fic about that ship.

I also, hot take, think Percy and Leo are a possibly very interesting match. I’m also currently writing a oneshot about them too. But I think they both have powers that related closer to each others than anyone else. They both at some point fear their own powers (at least as far as I’m aware, I’ve not finished HOO so my Leo knowledge is a bit small) and I think they could have a very cool dynamic. Missed opportunity to for Percy to see someone struggling and not super confident with their powers, like he was all those years ago and not have him help! (I like this even better if I think about my HC that Luke taught Percy to control his powers, as Percy canonically points out that Luke is the only person who will train with him after he’s claimed)

I also think you make a really good point about Percy and Michael. Especially because Percy is so prone to guilt, and already has a lot of survivors guilt. It would be an interesting dynamic both ways, if Michael survived and if he died just like he did in canon. If I can think of a good concept for a Fic I’m going to look at writing one for them.

I’ve always been a fan of rare ships too, so I’m pretty used to struggling to find fanfics written about them (Harry Potter/Theo Nott, Percy Jackson/Leo Valdez, Percy Jackson/Ethan Nakamura, etc.)

I feel like I have read a few fics that are Percy/Will, and I like it because it almost feels like it’ll never last. Both feel guilty, and both struggled to survive through the war. I also HC that Will does resent Percy for Lee Fletchers death, and maybe even Michael, because he was there on the bridge and saw it happen. Even if he doesn’t necessarily resent Percy for it, I think it still creates an interesting dynamic. If I can find the fics I liked for them, I’ll leave them in the comments.

Honorable mention to Percy/Pollux and Percy/Castor, because the inherent sadness and depth of guilt that would play into either relationship is amazing. There are criminally little fics with this pairing, so if anyone has any good recs pls send them my way. I’m hoping to get something in the works about one of these ships, but no promises.

Also we do need to mention the Percy/Rachel and Percy/Nico of it all. I wholeheartedly believe that both of these ship options are so much better than what we get in canon. I think Percy with Rachel would be so much healthier than what he had with Annabeth in canon, and that maybe even having someone removed would help him to cope with everything that happened. Allow him to grieve and mourn and be angry. I also think Nico is still a very good choice, paticularly because I don’t like his canon pairing with Will. Especially the limiting use of his powers. In contrast I think Percy would help Nico, would teach him how to use his powers in a way that makes them stronger and doesn’t drain him, because Nico taught himself and never had someone who could teach him how to train his powers up to be stronger and longer lasting. I think Nico also used quite strong powers immediately, in the sense that it’s like if Percy was running around causing earthquakes every where, it drains him and never learnt how to properly manage that. Percy used to get drained with his powers, but he built them up into what they are now, something that didn’t happen with Nico. I have a lot of love for Pernico, because it’s so angsty but has the poetenial to be so good, and again it goes back to guilt.

I think I’ve just realised that a running theme in Percy and his pairing is his guilt. His guilt factors into every relationship in his life, and shapes it. His guilt impacts his relationship with Annabeth, and arguably has a hand in what makes it toxic. Percy is synonymous with his guilt, and I think no matter what pairing you put him with, the guilt has to be acknowledged in some shape or form.

A Perfect Home Part 1 ❤(Around 7.8k. Merlin has been gone for four years, and those important to The Kingdom... aren’t really coping very well. An attack in the woods leads to them desperately searching for a physician before Elyan dies, days away from home, days away from his sister. A Physician, his wife, and their son, is what they find. FREYLIN!! ARWEN!!) 

A Harrowing Childhood💙(Around 6.9k. The knights needle out of Merlin just how horrifying his childhood was. EXTREME TW for child abuse, animal abuse, child death/murder. Severely abusive Hunith. Arthur and the knights look after Merlin, and Arthur sneaks away to tell Hunith what’s what. Once more, read the warnings and tags first pls.)

3 times Merlin saves a patient...🧡(Around 6.7k. ...+1 time there’s nothing he can do, and Arthur comforts him. Accidental baby acquisition, Arthur being a good friend, Merlin’s friends realising how BAMF Merlin is as a physician.)

A Slight Embarrassing Exposure🧡(Around 2k. Arthur walks in on a previously kept secret, and is rather pleased about it. Lots of teasing occurs, but it’s all very soft and loving. Implied but no explicit sexual content. Merleon :D) 

Old Friends🧡💙(Morgana and Elyan already know)(Around 4.2k. When Arthur, (good) Morgana, Merlin, and Gwen head back to rescue Gwen’s brother, they all discover a little more about Merlin’s past. Arthur is a little horrified, Gwen is annoyed and then uncomfortable and then fond, and Morgana thinks the whole thing is rather funny. Fluffy Merlyan Reunion :D)

The Shadows❤(Around 6.2k. Merlin from a week in the future appears in the Throne Room, bloody, dirty, terrified, with a warning of shadow monsters that will kill everyone. Angst as hell, happy/bittersweet ending in part two. Background Freylin :D)

The Shadows Part 2(final part) (Around 6.2k. The two Merlins argue, more secrets are revealed, and an unexpected but entirely welcome old friend pops up to help out. Bittersweet, but hopeful ending. Background Freylin continued :D)

Merlin Breaks❤(Around 5.4k. The gang follow Merlin out into the woods where they see him having a screaming, crying, magic-explosion breakdown. They had previously been unaware of his magic. They all feel especially guilty and terrified, more-so when Kilgharrah shows up to promise Merlin a better life, puts him to sleep, and rips into them like it was what he was BORN to do. Cliff hanger ending, but I promise part three will fix things. Eventually :D)

Merlin Breaks Part 2 (Around 5.7k. The gang do their best to hide their misery and guilt, whilst simultaneously looking out for a suicidal Merlin. It’s not going too well. Angst (momentary Gwen & Merlin besties fluff))

Merlin Breaks Part 3(final part) (Around 5.6k. Arthur decides that something must be done, and he confronts Merlin in the gentlest way he can. There’s lots of tears, lots of guilt, but also lots of comfort, and the fluffiest love confession I’ve ever written so... enjoy that :D)

Arthur gets sneaky❤(Around 7.3k. REQUESTED. 5 times Arthur sneakily sees Merlin doing something ridiculous to make his life easier, and +1 it’s so ridiculous, he feels the need to confront him about it. Semi crack treated semi seriously. BAMF Merlin, resigned Arthur.)

Uther Ships It Part 1💙🧡(It is implied that Morgana, Leon, and Arthur know, but no one else, bar Gaius, knows)(Around 7k. Uther is at his wit’s end with Arthur not realising his feelings for his manservant, and decides to do something about it. He recruits Morgana, and gathers intelligence from Sir Leon and Gaius, to help it his plans. CRACK but also FLUFF!!)

Uther Ships It Part 2(final part) (Around 8.3k. Arthur and Uther have a very soft heart to heart, Uther and Morgana’s plans take a turn for the dramatic, and their plans are discovered in a manner that is rather mortifying for everyone involved. Bar Morgana. Who is enjoying herself far too much. FLUFF!!!)

The Murderer (Around 7.7k. Arthur comes home from a hunt and has to tell the gang that they (A+M) were attacked, and Merlin didn’t make it. Everyone grieves, it’s super angsty, then Merlin's Ghost shows up and reveals to everyone what ACTUALLY happened (he revealed his magic, Arthur killed him). THIS IS VERY ANGSTY!!! A little comfort, but no Arthur Redemption, and only a little hope in the end. I’m very proud of this one, but I also hope you cry)

M-Cubed (and Leon) fuck shit up💙(Sort of. Leon already knows. Arthur... eh)(Around 4.5k. REQUESTED. Merlin, Morgana, and Mordred use their magic to prank and otherwise mess with visiting Lords that they don’t like. A nasty Lord that abuses servants and undermines Arthur comes along, and the three of them need to step up their game. Established Merleon, in which Leon stays as far away from the chaos as he can, until Merlin gets hurt, that is. Fluff!)

Respectfully, My Lord❤(Around 7.3k. Arthur and Merlin have a huge argument in front of a crowd, that involves The King getting punched in the face and Merlin cussing him out and quitting on the spot. Leon, who was among the crowd that witnessed this, sets Arthur straight, comforts Merlin, and makes sure they sort themselves out. Angst but then a hella fluffy Merthur ending :D)

The Guard Dog🧡(Around 6.5k. Gwaine has the bright idea of taking all the knights, including The King, to an underground (but perfectly legal, he promises) fighting ring. To their utmost surprise, Merlin is competing, and kicks ass. He also has a nickname that the gang are hypothetically horrified to find out the story behind. CRACK and badass Merlin. What more do you need?)

Merlin isn’t ok (until he is)❤(Around 9.7k. 5 times various people notice that something is terribly wrong with Merlin, and subtly start helping him out, and 1 time Merlin finds out they know he’s not in a good place, and decides to go to them for help. Read the TWs, happy/hopeful ending, and a nice flash of Merlin+Gwen ultimate friendship, if you can make it through the sad things first. Vague Merthur but not much)

Merlin is a slut (Affectionate)🧡(Around 1.4k. REQUESTED. Arthur wants to address the rumours that Merlin is a good lay, to save his manservant’s pride and dignity, only to have his most trusted knights tell him the rumours are true. Gwaine almost kills himself laughing, and Merlin wonders if he can somehow convince Arthur that this rather harrowing conversation didn’t actually happen. HELLA CRACK)

More than Bilingual?🧡(Around 6k. A sort of sequel to Merlin is Bilingual, in that the gang find out that Merlin actually speaks a whole BUNCH of languages. slight Merthur, hefty God!Merlin, but it’s not really important)

Merlin is a badass Part 1🧡(Around 5.3k. Merlin is lead to believe that Arthur (and potentially some of The Gang) have been kidnapped. He goes after them, guns blazing, just to find that the heavily guarded fort has no prisoners, and a crude clue leading him back to the castle. Merlin is HELLA badass (without his magic, he stabs and punches many people). A few secrets may be revealed.)

Merlin is a badass Part 2 (Around 10.5k. We go way back to the beginning. The entire thing is from the perspective of Arthur, the six knights, Gwen, Morgana, and Gaius, as they watch Merlin... well... kick ass. It’s unsettling, it’s angsty, it’s hella cool. No one knows quite what to make of it, and the gang’s captor gets what’s coming to him.)

Merlin is a badass Part 3❤(Around 6.3k. Merlin continues to be cool and scary whilst everyone else stares on, dumbfounded. Arthur continues to be gay, and Merlin decides fuck it, and reveals his magic. Happy ending!!)

Thunder Sucks Ass Part 1🧡(Around 7.8k. Thunder is terrible, but only for classically trained knights. Merlin loves storms, but Leon and Arthur hate them. Merlin discovers this and helps them through it without a second thought. Eventual Merthur :D)

Thunder Sucks Ass Part 2 (final part) (Around 6.1k. Merlin realises why Arthur and Leon are acting so strangely, and manages to turn storms into something that the two knights low-key look forward to. HELLA fluffy. Pre-Merthur)

Merlin gets better (though still pay attention to the TWs, due to the timeline, it gets pretty graphic before it gets better), Arthur and Leon have a little bonding moment, Hunith arrives in Camelot (and subsequently, Arthur gets mothered) Merlin writes his own letter to Arthur, inviting The King out to meet him. It’s getting happier folks!! It ends on a hopeful cliff hanger!!)

Control Part 5❤(Exactly 10.3k. Arthur, Merlin, and Lancelot catch up, there’s some feelings-y stuff. Creek:

Creek is pretty much my only OTP ever??? I was shipping them in middle school way before they made Creek canon and I only found out about TxC LAST YEAR???? My South Park friends irl are mostly libertarians, so nobody told me and I've basically lost my goddamn mind about this during covid. I stopped reading SP fanfic around 2010/11, and now have binge read every single Creek fic I could find in the past year. As a result, I have a million recs for Creek fics; if you're looking for a particular fic, I can probably help; and I am now legally insane.

It's really funny to me when people discuss problematic stuff common in Creek fics today. Some of this stuff is deeply entrenched in a long fandom history, but it's a shadow of what it once was. Every other Creek fic in the late 00s was like Craig bullies Tweek into suicide, Tweek is an anorexic cutter for some reason (ok, reason being, simply: 00s), Craig is a rapist/murderer (this seems like way too much effort for Craig/a misunderstanding of his psychology)?? I want to say to these people, you don't know how good you have it. I'm glad for the changes, though, because vers Creek is beautiful and I love it. Like, of course Craig would take it up the butt. Don't be immature.

I was completely blown away by Tweek x Craig. I still can't believe it, and I'm just grateful they addressed Creek and can also see how well they complement one another. There's something so sweet and vulnerable in their relationship, and I'm glad they've taken care to show that Tweek can hold his own and be a total brat.

STAIG:

Staig seems to have gotten popular more recently as I don't recall seeing much Staig back in the day. I've def read Creek fics with Staig in them this time around reading fic. I'm not a huge fan of ships w/ Craig and a main four member, but out of them all, Crenny and Staig strike me as most plausible. Craig and Kenny are actually friendly, but Craig is Stan's foil and there's always sexual tension w/ your foil. If you can't f*ck your foil, how in the hell are you gonna f*ck anyone else??? This is often how Staig is used in fics where Creek is endgame - Stan is some dalliance that helps Craig come to terms with his gay ass. Good for him tbh.

I prefer Staig to Cryle/Crenny because when Kyle and Kenny are made out to be skinny little twinks, physically comparable to Tweek in some way, there's often this impulse to denigrate Craig's bond with Tweek to legitimate his relationship with Kyle or Kenny. I'm not a fan of this approach generally - I also don't like it in Creek fics when Craig's minor crush on Thomas is something that needs to be obliterated in order for his relationship with Tweek to have meaning.

Because Stan and Tweek aren't physically similar, there's less of this impulse to put Tweek down in Staig fics, so I'm more apt to read them in the first place (I'm sorry, I just love him). I've read Staig oneshots where they're together because Tweek cheated/was on drugs. Rachhell (https://archiveofourown.org/works/14299416) and metrophobic (https://archiveofourown.org/works/16138796/chapters/38540477) both had great ones like this. The latter is Twoken-centric but takes place at Staig's wedding, and metrophobic also has a fascinating Staig (and Twenny!) in "Tweeker Nation" which is so goddamn good: https://archiveofourown.org/works/14300271. I think I headcanon Tweek's future relationship to drugs differently from others and I also see him as more likely to be a homewrecker than the one in the relationship cheating, but I love these oneshots and would love to see how Staig got together under those circumstances.

By and large, though, I'm here for like angry fighty Staig messing around? I also love platonic Staig when done well - it's done very well in gremlinteeth's "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space" (https://archiveofourown.org/works/15904065), cocoacremeandgays' "Three Sides" Series (https://archiveofourown.org/series/1231883), and applecrumbledore's "Seven days of alien summer" (https://archiveofourown.org/works/7687666 - they're not friends, exactly, but Craig is kinder to Stan once he grapples with his gay crush on Kyle). That said, I’m always into Craig casually hating Stan's guts, just because, like in qindarka's "Aisle 10" (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/6062509/1/Aisle-10) and IDRC's "The Ring" (https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12195070/18/The-Ring).

K2:

Okay, so back in the late 00s, I was obsessed w/ Creek, but because of the wild power imbalance between Craig and Tweek in a lot of Creek fics at the time, I'd get tired of reading the 1000th story where Tweek is completely pathetic and Craig is either the big hero or chooses to wreck Tweek for funsies, and I'd read Style and K2. I am trying to get back into these ships, or any ships in other fandoms that are like Creek, because the hold Creek has over me - oh boy, am I unwell.

My impression of K2 at the time was that Style has that soulmate-y vibe to it, but Kenny was often a means by which Kyle has some gay revelation about Stan. Often Kenny would do this deliberately and wouldn't have any illusions about his significance to Kyle relative to Stan. I remember the sexual tension between K2 would often get me like Idk, Kyle! Maybe go with Kenny? You gotta at least once in your life go with a Kenny.

The state of K2 now, a decade later, seems more diverse, especially since we got Mysterion up in this bitch. I put "missing that special something" because, seeing it in passing in fics that also contain Creek, sometimes it lacks the spark I remember it having when I used to read K2 fics (this likely has more to do with my mentality than the fics themselves tho). Send me your K2 recs, plz!!! I used to love it so much and wish I could find the fics I loved back then.

Hi Days! I'm a huge fan of your work and your tumblr blog bc you give so many naruhina fanfic recs and talk about your stories, etc.

To sum it up, you're my favorite person lol, I'm a bit shy so I'm asking this as an anon, but I wanted to tell you something random just because I've always just thought about it and maybe you would agree or comment on it.

Have you ever listened to mitski? If you haven't I recomend you do bc she's amazing, but anyways I was listening to a song of hers called "washing machine heart" and it reminded me of naruhina, like the fic "together you and I" but different you know, like naruto only married hinata because he couldn't have sakura, she was his second option and every time he looked at her he wished and pretended it was Sakura, so Hina tries her hardest to look pretty and try to be the person he wants, always getting saddend by the idea that she isn't the one he wants, she knows his heart will only belong to Sakura. She let's him trample all over her heart and use her because she loves him unconditionally, maybe cry to her on some nights because he longs for Sakura's love that will never come.

I've read so many fanfics and I've never encountered one using this concept, I'd write it myself, but I'm not good at writing, maybe I'm reaching but it could inspire an angst story made by you or just a prompt or idea/concept for anyone to use. The hurt in this could be inmaculate and I bet a good writer could bring everyone to tears if they read a story like this. You don't have to do anything ofc I'll love you either way, I'm not meaning to push you to write a whole story with this concept by any means or to even post this ask, it's just something I made up/ related to this certain song, so I wanted you to see it, perhaps share your opinion or thoughts on it or just think about it. I love pain a lot hahaha bc I'm not a narusaku shipper in any way, I actually dislike the ship a lot.

Naruto finally makes it to the Hokage’s office, having had trouble shaking off fangirls on his way.  He can immediately tell he’s the last one there, even though it’s the eve of the Rinnegan Festival.  Tense expressions greet him, the atmosphere somber.

Sakura whips her attention back to the desk before them.  “Rokudaime, with all due respect, I don’t think Naruto belongs on this mission.”

Her behavior has confused him all night.  First moving away from him so that Hinata would sit between them at Ichiraku when Hinata could have just sat on the other side of him.  Then pushing him to follow Hinata back home.  He said aloud that he’d be seeing her later, and that he wanted to catch up with everyone first, but Sakura just glared at him...

She’s been pushing him away, more and more every day, breaking his heart to smaller and smaller pieces...whether knowingly or not, he’s not sure about that, but she’s never rejected him from being her teammate on a mission.

Worried, he meets Kakashi’s gaze.

“I understand your concern, Sakura.”  His tone is heavy.  His usual careless attitude nowhere in sight.  “Call it just my gut-feeling...you’re going to need Naruto’s strength for this mission.”

Hanabi was kidnapped.

Hiashi and Hinata are nowhere to be found.

“What do you mean...?” Naruto finds himself asking.  “I just saw her.  We just saw her.  Not even an hour ago.”

“When Sai reported Hanabi’s kidnapping, believe me, Naruto, we moved to notify her family immediately.  Anbu can’t find them.”

“What?”  The last memory he has of Hinata abruptly leaving dinner and running off without hardly a word nags at him, inexplicably tightening his chest.  “She’s fine.  Hinata’s strong.  She can take on anybody.  No one would dare-”

“Naruto,” Sakura interrupts, her gaze cutting sharp.  “She’s nowhere to be found.  And as much as you believe that, no one is invincible.  Not even Hinata.  We need to form a plan, otherwise we’re losing precious time.”

“No one is invincible.  Not even Hinata.”

An emptying numbness invades his insides, discomforting slickness muting him.

She knows everything about him.  She’s been his rock after Sakura tried to shut him down for good.  So how can it be that she’d just disappear?  There’s no way.

Hours of wandering around in abandoned, desolate, war-stricken villages in god-knows-where, and nothing.  No one.

He’s asking for the hundredth time, but he doesn’t care, he’s past the point of desperation, and anxiety-laced tension fills the air.  “Taku, you really don’t see anything?!”  The Hyuuga they have on their team led them into this godforsaken wasteland.

Taku turns on him aggressively, getting in his face in reaction, and yells, “What about you??  You think I’m not trying my best?!  This is my family!  Just because you’re Hinata’s boyfriend doesn’t mean you’re any more worried than the rest of us!  You don’t sense her??”

No.  He doesn’t.

His Sage Mode has never been so useless.  In fact, he senses no one besides them in this place, and it’s with terrible unease that he begins to entertain the thought that she’s gone for good.

“There’s no one even here besides us!  Nothing!  Why’d you take us down here?  Where are we even?!  How do we get out of here in the first place?!” he argues back.

“Sakura-san was right!  You don’t belong on this mission!  I don’t know what Hinata-sama could ever see in you, I haven’t seen her smile in months!”

“What do you mean by that?!  She smiles all the time!  I’ve never seen her act so cheerful in my life!”

“So you fucking know it, too!”  Taku glares at him with an incredulous expression.  “That she’s just acting!”

“What the hell do you mean by that-”

And he doesn’t know what happened next, but Sai’s grabbing onto Taku and he himself is locked in Shikamaru’s shadow manipulation.  Chakra’s sparking off his own hands, while blue embers warp along Taku’s.

“Calm down,” Shikamaru orders both of them.  “We’re not getting anywhere if the two of you keep fighting.”  He waits for Taku to loosen his stance.

Sai lets go of him.

Taku throws an insulting glare around before sauntering off.

Shikamaru sighs.  Hard.  “Go cool your head, Naruto.”  He retracts his shadow, and Naruto wastes no time walking off in the opposite direction, far from wherever Taku is heading.

Yet Taku’s ridiculous words ring in his head.  “That she’s just acting.”

But she said that she’s happy to be with him.  That she doesn’t mind that he’s still in love with Sakura.  She said that she’s just happy to be with him.

She said that.  She did.  And she wouldn’t lie to him, right?

She was just acting?

“You’re not going to finish your ramen?” he asked her on their date last month.

“No...”  Suddenly, she smiled brightly, something she’s been doing more often ever since he mentioned that he’s always liked how genki Sakura is.  “Do you want the rest of mine?  I’m dieting.”

He scrunched his eyebrows at her.  “Dieting?  Why?”

“Well...”  She looked thoughtful for a moment before seeming to come to a decision.  “Naruto-kun, you like thin girls, right?”

He knew she was talking about Sakura.  “...I guess...”

“I want to make you happy,...” she started.  She bit her lips for a hesitating moment before continuing, “so I’ve been trying to lose a little weight.”

“Oh.”  He didn’t know what to make of that.  Unbidden, he looked her over. 

“Can you tell?” she asked, her characteristic shyness lowered her lashes, yet she didn’t fidget under his examination, and he could tell how she was trying her best to have that confident persona he admires in his former teammate.

Despite her recent changes in attitude, Hinata’s still been so physically small compared to himself and everyone else.  Under her jacket, he couldn’t tell if she looked skinnier or not, and even if she was, he doesn’t think she really needed to be skinnier.

But then she looked up at him with that heavy, hopeful weight in her gaze, and he couldn’t let her down.  Not when she’s trying so hard for his approval.

He fibbed easily.  “Yeah.  You look really good.”

She shined another smile at him that made him feel good.  Even if their relationship wasn’t traditional, he could at least still make her happy.  He could at least tell her some sweet words and see her sweet smile and-

She was lying.

She wasn’t happy?

He never made her happy?

Then what was the point of any of it?

No, she must have been happy, right?!  She said so!  She told him so!  Many, many times!

After all, he asked her.  All of those times he thought she was faking her smile, he asked just to make sure, and she vehemently told him that she was really happy to be with him.

She said he could talk to her about all of it.  That she could take on his heartbreak because her feelings were so much bigger than...

“Uzumaki Naruto.”

The unfamiliar voice has him leaping to his feet.

A man as pale as a ghost with piercingly icy eyes is floating down to him on some strange platform.  “You’re really as pitiful as I expected.”

“Who the hell are you?!”  He readies his stance.  He’s not in any mood for games, and he’s ready to let loose some of his stress on this very suspicious character.

“Hinata’s fiance.”

“Hinata?!”  Fire races through his veins, heating his feet, and he’s ready to leap at this guy.  “Where is she?!”

“With me.”

His heart rate exponentially explodes, beating into his ears, his skin practically bristling.  “Let her go,” he demands, and the threat of his words leaks from every pore of his being.  “Now.”

The man almost snorts.  “What makes you think she wants to see you?  You only ever used her, broke her...”  His collected expression hardens, and Naruto can sense that he has no intention of releasing her.  “I’ll make her happier than you ever could.”

Several thoughts fly too quickly through his mind to properly process any of it, leaving only residual uncertainty and that deepening sense of his culpability in her sudden disappearance.  But he doesn’t linger on the unpleasant sensations.  “What the fuck do you know?!”  And he’s charging at him, a Rasengan heavy in his hand.

The enemy is far more powerful than he appeared, immediately blowing him back with some kind of focused chakra.  “Weak, pathetic.”

“GIVE HER BACK!”  He replicates himself a dozen times, each of them throwing Rasenshurikens at the man.

Yet more of that strange yellow chakra protects him.  He’s unscathed even under his shadow clone onslaught.  “No.  I gave her a choice, and she came with me.  I’m just here to get rid of you, take revenge against you for her sake.”

He hardly comprehends the nonsense spewing out of the enemy’s mouth, and he rallies his clones into close combat, but the man manages to avoid many of the attacks while landing hits of his own.

Clones poofing away only to be replaced by more, frustration and fury starting to blind him into sloppier and sloppier moves.

“I love Hinata.  That’s why I deserve her.”

He chokes on his own breath, and in his momentary loss of concentration,...

He’s falling.

aaannnnd that’s as far as I want to go with that.  Imagine the rest of the team arriving in time to notice Toneri making his escape toward the sky, and I guess the rest of the story would sort of follow the rest of The Last...Naruto self-reflects a lot in a bundle of depression for a long time and yeah.

...ahhh...  I encourage you to write the fic you want to see in the world ❤️

Trans man Wei Wuxian HC

Hear me out (although I'm probably not the first to present this hc/au) - a trans masculine Wei Ying is both believable and also adds an extra something to his whole arc (but also I'm very much enjoying projecting onto him...)

He (socially? medically? I'm unsure about my own specifics as to how transitioning would work in the cultivation world but trans people have always existed, so they do here too) transitions young, before puberty, while in Lotus Pier (perhaps another reason why he struggled on the streets but is taken in by the Jiang Clan)

Jiang Fengmian and Yanli are supportive, particularly Yanli (ofc she is, she's literally the sweetest person in the world)

Ziyuan is resentful of him challenging Jiang Cheng as another male heir

Jiang Cheng is happy to have a brother but as he grows up he inherits his mother's resent and becomes insecure of his own masculinity (adds to the eventual rift between the brothers)

The cultivation world is not free of transphobia, transitioning is rare but not unheard of but no one in the main clans has transitioned (publically?) before; most people might only be a little hesitant of Wei Wuxian but perhaps their transphobia increases as he becomes more unruly (for which I'd like to punch them in their metaphorical stomachs)

Lan Wangji and the Lans are always respectful (did you expect any less), however Wangji is judged for being with Wei Wuxian by the more bigoted cultivators (fuck them) either because they pretend he's an unmarried lady (ooh the scandal ooh the misogyny why am I pissed at the imagined society in my imagined hc lmao) or simply bc he's not cis

When the core transfer occurs, Wei Wuxian also gives up his transition (testosterone cultivation?? gimme some I want it) and is a greater sacrifice than anyone could ever know, he learns demonic cultivation as an alternative and no one realises since he passes so well anyway

Perhaps the Wen clan is also known for having a higher acceptance/concentration of non cis and trans and generally queer people and Wei Wuxian is branded for helping them

Being summoned into Mo Xuanyu's body means that he inhabits a cis male body without the need to transition and adds a layer of joy to his return (god could someone pls summon me into their body I don't want mine anyway)

The ultimate standoff of Wangxian vs the world culminates in Wei Ying telling Lan Zhan to denounce him and his transition to save himself (this is literally so painful to write) but instead Wangji proclaims his love and dares anyone to challenge the man Wei Wuxian is and has always been (*cries*)

Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian eventually reconcile and recognise each other as the brothers they always were, and the cultivation world begins to recognise more gender fluidity and queerness as Wei Wuxian returns

I debated whether to add this but A yuan could be Wei Wuxian's biological child, depending on his transition and his own choices - trans men can and do still carry children by choice or otherwise (personally I hc Wei Ying as ace for projection reasons, this is obv not canon if you've read the book 😅 )

A disclaimer before I list fic recs: “badass” can mean a lot of things and not just the traditional hollywood version of “badass”, and I personally believe MJ is a badass as she is in how she’s clearly v socially conscious and stands up for herself and others (see her defending Peter against Flash then against Brad in FFH) but for the sake of narrowing this down I’ve gone for fics that fit that more hollywood definition of “badass” otherwise I’d just be listing every peter/mj fic in existence.

19. Cat and Spider by @awakening5- there’s no such thing as too many black cat mj aus...this one blends elements of canon beautifully

21. Catch a Tiger by the Tail by @groo-ock - spider-man noir au in which MJ is spider-man..really great murder mystery and noir story all-round (w lots of the hallmarks of the genre except they’re flipped on their heads like a homme fatale instead of a femma fatale)

22. slow dancing in the spider’s web by quiet_lights- a dark, dystopian post-Blip au in which MJ is a detective investigating crime in New York...only one chap and has not updated in a long time but if you like mysteries and dystopian-set stories then I highly recommend it regardless

Fandom(s): I have engaged with other fandoms in the past but I am ashamed of those parts of my life so just atla/lok forget that I have ever mentioned being in any other fandom.

Where you post: ao3 (though I post hcs on here as well and I have a post series I am currently procrastinating) 

Most popular oneshot: bad girls basically all the major teenage girl characters of ATLA are a gay friend group and they form a band, also Mai has a giant crush on Ty Lee, shenanigans ensue. This one was written at one of my darker points re: not being able to see my gay friend group (my gaggle, if you will) and it made me really happy to write about these girls supporting each other and connecting with one another through music. 

Most popular multichapter fic: far and away it’s the greatest of them all, my only fic to ever get over 100 kudos (the celebration of which was the genesis of my very first fic recs post.) I’ve talked about it a fair number of times but basically Toph and Bumi duel, Toph wins (look me in the eye and tell me Toph wouldn’t win if she and Bumi dueled, bryke), and then Bumi finds out that she doesn’t really have anywhere to go now that the war’s over, so he invites her to stay at the palace in Omashu with him as his Earthbending teacher, shenanigans ensue. it’s definitely very close to my heart. 

Favorite story you’ve written so far: if I had to pick a favorite I’d pick victory lap, which is a Suki-centric fic set after the war in which Suki’s trauma and the pressure of constantly being there for everyone kind of catch up with her and it all becomes a bit of a mess. I think in this fandom we have a tendency to idealize Suki (because she’s not fleshed out enough in canon) and I wanted to kind of break that image. I love Suki to death but she’s not perfect and I wish more people would give her the time and space to exist as a complex human being. So yeah, that’s why this is my favorite. 

Fic you were nervous to post: keep the world at bay, for a lot of reasons. I knew that this was going to be long and I wasn’t sure I’d be able to keep myself going through the writing of it (I’m committed to it but it’s hard knowing that I have so much work still ahead of me). Additionally it’s an Avatar Sokka fic and I know people do not like those, and I totally understand why and you’re free to have your opinion but I just wasn’t sure if anybody was going to vibe with it you know? and even if somebody vibed with Avatar Sokka as a concept maybe they wouldn’t vibe with nonbender Zuko or Waterbender Yue or the twelve different redemption arcs (I’m exaggerating but also everybody’s getting redeemed) or the way I want to portray Iroh or any number of things because there is so much canon divergence in this and I as a person have such a different perspective than bryke. But so far it’s going really well, I think I’m managing everything all right, and I’m hoping I can actually pull this off! 

How you choose your titles: usually song lyrics, but sometimes I’ll have a really good idea for a title (as with sore loser and victory lap--it just worked and the symmetry makes me really happy.)

Do you outline? yes, heavily! I didn’t with tgota and it caused a lot of problems and so ever since I’ve tried to have something in front of me that tells me where I’m going. The outline’s not super duper specific though because I usually want to give myself room to improvise. Pretty much every OC you’ll see in any of my work was made up on the spot (the ktwab outline had Zuko interacting with “the crew” and then while I was writing I decided who Akemi and Captain Fukuhara would be, and it ended up working out beautifully so now I do that for all my fics)

In progress: of what I have posted on ao3, three of those fics are in progress (not ready to make nice, let him fly, which should probably be done soon bc it’s a twoshot, and the aforementioned ktwab) 

Coming soon/not yet started: Bumi fic, Ty Lee fic, and wuko coffeeshop au are all in the process of being outlined and researched. I’m starting Ty Lee fic after I finish let him fly, and I’m starting Bumi fic after I finish not ready to make nice (like let him fly, Ty Lee fic will either be a oneshot or a twoshot, probably a one shot, and like not ready to make nice, Bumi fic will probably be multiple chapters but not in the 40-70 range like ktwab and wuko coffeeshop au, so I have all my bases covered) 

Do you accept prompts? usually around follower milestones I do! people never send them to me so it’s kind of a moot point but when I reach my next milestone I will put out a post saying that I’m accepting prompts, so watch out for that. 

Upcoming work that you’re most excited about: tbh Zone has been getting me pumped about writing this Bumi fic so I’m excited about that, and the Ty Lee fic very much feels like Something I Need To Write the way victory lap did so I think whatever comes of that is going to be really good and really sad.

mai for the ask game?

Why I like them

she’s got a good sense of humour - so deadpan, and she’s almost dramatic in how dreary she finds everything. i like how mean she is like she’s a spoilt brat

she’s one of the bravest characters imo - how many times does she defy azula? and then is gonna fight to the death over it? i just wish we knew more about her. like is it arrogance? does she finally just wake up? is it love? i always want more from mai! not fair!

i also think she’s very miserable and depressed and i dont know what she needs but she’s not getting it at any point in the show

i like that she and ty lee seem to have a good relationship, but i get the feeling mai might feel like ty lee is azula’s and so she holds her at a distance. i also think its very funny how they take shots at each other during the beach- mai doesnt say it in a particularly cruel way but it obviously gets a reaction

also i had a big crush on her when bk 2 first came out! i think it was her husky voice...

Why I don’t

i guess bc she is so reserved it is hard to get into her head. so i don’t not like her, there is just less material to work with when engaging with her character. especially when in bk 3 her actions are centered around zuko, but i dont find their relationship particularly compelling. it fits into the story but it doesn’t make me feel very much (except that goth portrait of them)? like, she’s so repressed and he’s so angry and confused they make a very unsatisfied couple, even if it has nothhing to do with each other.

also.. she would treat workers like shit lol

i dont think i have an otp for her. maiko fits easily w the fics i wanna write (for plot reasons), and i kind of love maizula in a messy kind of way. i would kind of love to see her get with some ember island frat boy but she only uses him for his body and disappears in the middle of the night never to be seen again. would love to see her w more female characters but i think she needs to open up a little more before that could happen (she’s repressed ). if anyone has bi/les mai recs pls hmu

also that mailee fic you recommended was really good! i could get down with that

honestly? zuko. but also maybe sokka? i think they would be really funny together. can you imagine how awkward it would be? sokka would be so intimidated and mai would scare him so much. i would love to see that. he would probably find him funnier than she found him bc she’s used to all ty lees bizarreness. also ty lee (but see ty lee ask for a couple more thoughts)

Head Canon

mai dissociates on the regular.

mai had a secret notebook or diary in which she writes her innermost thoughts/draws zuko in love hearts and one time azula found it and showed it to ty lee and she hated her from that day . now she doesnt keep a diary or anything that anyone could find :(

au where she would eventually leave home and form an alt/postpunk synth duo . she really likes amping up the distortion and heaps of girls fall in love with her

she really takes to a lot of courtly activities but like toph she chooses not to engage in them

when she drinks she gets awful red blotches on her face. she’s more vain than she lets on so she doesnt say this is why she doesnt drink. 

in some ways she understands azula more than anyone - they did bond over hating their mothers and their mothers favoritism of their brothers - but they never spoke about it openly. it was just mutually understood.

she kind of loved torturing her parents by falling for the banished prince but they couldnt really say anything openly about it because it would be seen as treason

unlike ty lee (who really doesnt know who she is in many ways) mai knows exactly who she is, she just doesnt know how to be her in her current situation
