Increase in young women and girls using paracetamol for self harm leads Australian Government to limit pack sizes for panadol etc. Limits on where and how you can buy. Recommendations have been put forward to make it a script only med.
No mention of any preventative measures to try and avoid women and girls getting to a point where downing a large box of panadol sounds like a good idea (please don't. Apart from all the many and varied reasons why you shouldn't do this to yourself it is apparently very painful).
Thanks very much Nickolas Buckley Sydney Toxicologist who has made these recommendations. As a cis white male in a major city I very much doubt you've ever had any difficulty in your life getting even the most basic pain medication so I really appreciate you making it even harder for those of us who are not in that demographic to live pain free.
There's one pharmacist where I live. They jack the prices up on absolutely everything. We have no permanent doctors they're all ring ins. None of them like giving scripts or doing tests. They don't want to be responsible for the care of a patient they've just met, don't know the history of and will possibly never see again. And wait times for appointments is months. Not days. Months.
All of which would be irrelevant if this measure actually stopped anyone harming themselves. It won't. Taking away one means does nothing. You need to take away the impetus. And that requires more mental health care availability, more education, equality for females (of all varieties) in healthcare & education & pay & bodily autonomy & everything else. It requires prevention not policing.
Why tf do I need to be angry about this? Why is it so hard for these jerkwads to see the obvious?? Wait a year and some other drug will be taken off the shelves because it's being misused and nothing of actual value will have changed.

ngl i think a lot of the people who hate* on australian taskmaster just arent acclimatised to australian comedy and comedians like. the vast majority of contestants are well established comedians here with their own ‘characters’ that are being played into by tom gleeson himself . like idk. his making fun of wil in s2 probably came off as needlessly harsh to people unfamiliar with wil anderson’s popularity and continued presence hosting shows in the australian comedy sphere since like the early 2000s, but to the average australian viewer AKA the target audience of the show, its obviously intended as a joke and its funny because we have the context! idk what im even saying i just think people are especially harsh on the non-british tm adaptations because they arent as immersed in other countries’ comedy spheres as the UK’s and its unfair that people seem to expect foreign taskmasters to be equally enjoyable to a fan of the OG taskmaster who hasnt bothered to get the background on the cultural context . and also i wish people would stop expecting every taskmaster and assistant to perfectly replicate greg and alex’s dynamic… its simply not going to happen!!! there’s no reason for it to happen. the foreign variants are made for the audience in the country! meaning they are not made with the intention of being a copy of the original to please fans of the original. argh
*hate is not the right word really, its a bit too intense compared to what im talking about . i just cant think of a better word rn

//
when i went to the mountains and walked
the bush was still black
though the fires had passed out of memory.
wattles lined my path, twined in the roots
and bones of trees long dead;
bright in the afternoon they flowered
gold and alive and
young and i thought that was beautiful.
that they compliment
kindly the colours of survival.

Can we get Maine trending please? I need Maine to trend. I need people to know that if it could happen here, it could happen anywhere. I need people to fight to ban assault weapons and fight to keep weapons out of the hands of dangerous people. There were supposed to be failsafes in place to keep this from happening. We need to ban assault weapons.

in the same way that all the time milestones beyond The Australian hurt me, I physically cannot cope with the year turning to 2025 because I do not know how to put a mental grasp on a world where it is no longer The Year I Lived In Australia. that feels like such a thick dividing line putting it In The Past.
and similarly to the way I did back then, I feel like I am using my bare hands to grip onto the edge of a truck bed as it flies 80mph down the freeway. And I do not like it

dear sir please friend explain to me what on earth a swimming carnival is
hiiiii jules
i feel like i should really host an australian culture 101 class on here at this point, but it's actually really interesting to see what parts of my normal childhood are actually not universal
anyways, swimming carnival. singlehandedly the only good sports carnival we had in my opinion. i say, sports carnival and essentially it is just a full day of being in the sun doing some kind of activity. we would have at least one every term, so four a year. they are your typical things like cross country, track and field, and of course, swimming.
depending on the school, you either had it at the start of the year in february (just as summer was wrapping up) or at the end of the year in december (as summer was beginning). everyone would sit in their respective houses (or assigned school sports teams) and cheer for everyone in the pool for their house if they weren't obviously in the pool for their age group.
it was mandatory to go and you had to swim at least once. the year you were born was called, you took off your ridiculous house colour get up (except for my first primary school, i always managed to be in the blue team), and you swam in either freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, etc. etc, for house points. obviously, house with the most points won at the end of the day
there were also a few team races and sometimes they had free swims so people could just cool down and not die in the summer heat lol. but it was mostly just a day off schoolwork with your friends, eating lollies or ice cream together (they would always have a canteen on site) and getting sunburnt.
i didn't usually go to the ones in high school, but the primary school ones were the best. i miss it. just a tad.

actually. you know what. why can't artists tour more often from an australian base?? southeast asia is right there. huge populations. jakarta, singapore, ho chi minh city, manila, kuala lumpur, penang, then up the mekong (they should take a tour boat like it's a tour bus) to bangkok and whatever the capital of laos is called i'll look it up later. go visit the mountainous cities in viet nam not just the delta ones up to bangladesh and mumbai and whatever the other big city in india is called (i'll look it up and update this post). sri lanka. up to south korea and japan and hong kong and taiwan then shanghai and beijing are HUGE like as an aussie i can barely comprehend their population. could do some nice holiday shows in bali, fiji, heck, why not do one in port vila? honiara? both cairns and perth are really good bases if we just get in some infrastructure how hard is that? connectivity between the western and eastern worlds of music and australia is so well placed to do this. i would say darwin too but no one wants to live in darwin it's too hot
BUT I JUST DID AN ENVIRO SCI DEGREE IN WHICH THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT FEEDING THE WORLD FROM DARWIN AND YOU KNOW WHAT?? WHY NOT DO IT WITH MUSIC TOO

i sometimes hear you saying "cheers love, the cavalry is here" in your voice
ENGLISH!!! THAT'S ENGLISH!!!
We say "cheers, mate" even to women, unless you know the woman in which case most people would use "ta", unless you're a bogan or from the bush/Outback in which case you'd then say "cheers, love."
Women get so angry if you call them "love" unless you're in the Outback. It's like the US southern thing of calling a woman "honey." In the south it's considered a sign of respect similar to calling a man "sir", in the north it's offensive and patronising. Same thing with "love." In the cities you'll be called an ocker and a mysogynist and get yelled at. In the Outback, if it's acknolwedged at all, the girls do that cute thing where they look away with a smile.
Language is weird.

For my buds in Australia, Kids Help-line has been an amazing resource for me over the years, they're for anyone aged 5 to 25 years and I'm pretty sure they're free to call, even on a mobile!
Tumblr media
They have a bunch of resources on their website, and free phone or web (even email?!) counselling services.
Tumblr media
And, unlike places like Lifeline, they aren't just a crisis service, so you can call and talk to someone supportive/mental health literate even if you aren't actively suicidal, even if there's just something that doesn't feel quite right...
Tumblr media
I'm gonna age out of their service soon lol and would just really like to suggest y'all check em out, esp. if you've avoided calling a helpline before because you aren't sure if your problems are "serious" or "valid" enough to talk about (they always are).
Tumblr media
See below for real time footage of me saying goodbye to Kid's Helpline:
Tumblr media
In my experience they have always been kind, they're very nice, don't be afraid to call ❤️
