Started replaying Hollow Knight and had an idea because of how my gameplay is going

I have Grimmchilds charm equipped and went to get Unns charm (1 flame so far).

The cavern shook as somthing rose from the acid lake. The being was nearly as big as the cavern, and was looking directly at ghost.  The giant being look to be about to do somthing, but paused. "You are born of pale light and root." The being said moving closer. "Oh, but I see you are born of void even more. How dire the circumstances that there must be for you to ever have been created." The continued with mourning in their voice. "Wah" grimchild put in their two cents. "Hm?" The slug turns to grimmchild. "You have the price of red flame with you aswell...." They were silent for a moment, "I see that this kingdoms stasis has met it's end." The being placed down a charm infront of ghost. "Children of change. May my blessing help you in your great task." The being decreed. They then retreated down below the surface of the lake. Shape of Unn Charm acquired.

Japanese Linguistic Observations in Spy x Family - part 5

Part 5 - Translating humor and wordplay

Translating jokes from one language to another can be difficult, especially when the humor revolves around wordplay that's only apparent in the original language. Luckily for a comedy series like SxF, most of the humor relies on concepts that are universal to all languages, but there are the occasional jokes that require creative translation in order to get the same effect in English. What I think is the most well-known example of this kind of joke in SxF is from chapter 26, where Yuri tells Anya that "knowledge is power" during their tutoring session.

The Japanese phrase for this is 知は力 ("chi wa chikara"). Anya mishears this as ちわわぢから ("chiwawa jikara"), which means "chihuahua power," which is why we see the image of a muscular chihuahua in her thoughts. This results in Yuri calling her チワワ娘 ("chihuahua girl") from then on. Obviously this joke would be lost if translated directly, so Casey Loe, the official English translator for the SxF manga, got creative with making it work in English. He cleverly utilizes the English expression, "the whole enchilada," which sounds enough like "swole chihuahua" for Anya to believably mistake the two. This translation also makes it so that Yuri calling Anya "chihuahua girl" later on makes sense.

But unfortunately, because a series can have different companies working on the localization of its anime versus its manga, inconsistencies between the two often come up. In this case, the anime team translated this joke completely differently, and less effectively in my opinion. You can see from the below screenshots that they had Yuri use the word "unleash," which then led to Anya associating a (muscular) dog without a leash as powerful (?) Again, this translation was a stretch in my opinion and not as good as the manga version. This also makes it so that translating Yuri's nickname for Anya as "chihuahua girl" won't make sense.

But what's interesting is that, many months and episodes later in season 2, they stayed consistent with that translation and had Yuri call Anya "stupid leash girl" in episode 28.

Despite my dislike for this translation, I have to give them kudos for remembering it all that time later and not just directly translating it as "chihuahua girl." Though it makes me wonder if they'll stay consistent in season 3 where Yuri will be referring to Anya as "chihuahua girl" once again.

A further complication is that, not only do these kinds of inconsistencies exist between the anime and manga translations, but they also exist between the different streaming services that stream SxF with English subtitles throughout the world. I only have access to the subtitled version from Hulu, which is where my screenshots are from, and I think other streaming services in the US like Crunchyroll, Amazon, Netflix, etc, use the exact same subtitles. So when I refer to "the Hulu subtitles" throughout this post, I mean other major US streaming services too. However, I'm not totally sure if they all do share the same subtitle script, so if anyone who has these services could confirm, that would be great! However, @tare-anime informed me that Muse Asia's English subtitles for SxF are completely different! For example, they translated the above joke more closely to the original, by using the phrase "puppy power" and keeping Yuri's nickname for Anya as "chihuahua girl."

There are further differences with Muse Asia's translation as well, for example, they directly translate Anya's names for Loid and Yor, "chichi" and "haha," as "Father" and "Mother" instead of "Papa" and "Mama."

(thanks again to Tare for the Muse Asia screenshots!) This is different, not only compared to the Hulu subtitles, but also the official English manga as well, both of which have Anya consistently use "Papa" and "Mama."

Tare also let me know that Disney Plus in Asia, another service that streams SxF, has yet another version of the English subtitles! And these are only the subtitled versions for the US and Asia - if SxF is streamed with English subtitles in other countries, I wonder if those are different as well. That means there's at least 3-4 different English subtitle scripts for SxF, with different ways of translating certain things, like what I described above. This could make things confusing for someone without any knowledge of Japanese who reads the English version of the manga and watches the subtitled version of the anime on one or more streaming services...if they read the first few volumes of the manga with the "swole chihuahua" translation, then watch season 2 of the anime, they're gonna be confused about why Yuri calls Anya "stupid leash girl." There's other more minor inconsistencies too, like how the Hulu subtitles have Yor call Anya "Miss Anya" all the time, but the manga doesn't.

I'm sure there's some licensing reasons why there isn't one official English subtitle script that all the streaming services can use, and why they don't consult the manga translations, especially for the more difficult-to-translate parts. It seems like wasted effort for so many official English translations to exist for the same thing.

But anyway, back to the translations of jokes in SxF, another one that stood out to me occurred in chapter 23. During the scene where Loid is asking Anya about a name for Bond, he explains how dogs have trouble discerning the sounds of consonants. The phrase he uses for this is 子音の聞き分け("shiin no kiki wake"), which means "distinguishing consonants," with "shiin" meaning "consonant." However, there's another word "shiin" with the kanji 死因 that means "cause of death." This is what Yor thinks he means - 死因の聞き分け ("shiin no kiki wake"), which means "determining the cause of death." So in her thoughts, she imagines asking Bond if he prefers death by blood loss (失血死) or by being crushed (圧死), and when he shakes his head at both, she says "you're not good at these distinctions, are you?"

This is a difficult joke to translate, so Casey got a bit loose by having Loid use the word "plosives" instead of "consonants," and then having Yor mishear it as "explosives." He then changed up Yor's dialogue by having her say that Bond prefers C-4 explosions over other methods of death.

While I don't think the translation of this joke worked as well as the previous one (I feel like Yor wouldn't know about C-4 explosions?) I couldn't come up with anything better myself, lol. It just goes to show how translating things as closely to the original as possible isn't always the best choice…but oddly, that's what the Hulu subtitles did! For some reason they opted not to even attempt to rework this joke for English, and kept both Loid and Yor's dialogue as exact translations. This results in an exchange that makes no sense and will leave people wondering how Yor could mistake Loid's "can't tell consonants apart" as "can't tell causes of death apart."

However, there are some cases where the wordplay works similar enough in both Japanese and English that the joke can be translated without too much modification. An example of this is in chapter 59 where Becky asks Yor how she was able to "get" Loid…"pierce his heart" as she puts it. Yor thinks she means this literally, to which she replies that she wouldn't hurt Loid.

The Japanese version is very similar, with Becky using the verb 射止める("itomeru") which means "to shoot down" (with an arrow). However, it has a figurative meaning too, which is "to win" as in "win someone's heart." Yor thinks Becky means the literal meaning of shooting down, so she says that she wouldn't shoot Loid and that she doesn't even use a bow and arrows.

The Hulu subtitles translate it more or less directly, having Becky say "shoot an arrow through his heart" and keeping Yor's "I don't use a bow and arrows" that the manga omitted. Rare case where I think the anime translation worked better than the manga!

In the case of this joke, the concept of "shooting someone's heart" to mean "winning someone's heart" is universal in both English and Japanese, so little reworking was needed. This also helped keep consistency with Yor's tendency to associate otherwise benign concepts with violence due to the nature of her work.

I'll wrap up this post with what I think is the most commendable translation of a joke so far in the manga: how Casey translated the names of the guest characters at the ski resort in chapter 94.

Their names are puns in Japanese as well, and Annie over on Twitter already did a great breakdown of how each of the wordplay in their names was translated, so definitely check out that thread here. Since this chapter has yet to be animated, I'm really curious how the anime translators will handle this…since it seems like they don't reference the manga, they'll probably either translate the names literally or come up with their own pun names, and either will unfortunately lead to the same kind of inconsistencies between the anime and manga translations that I touched on earlier.

To summarize, humor can be a very culture/language specific thing, so it's up to the translator to make sure the same feeling is conveyed in their translation even if they have to essentially make up their own jokes. With that said, it's a shame that there isn't collaboration between the translators of the anime and manga to ensure consistent translations across the franchise. So I hope this post helped shed light, not just on how some of the jokes in SxF were conveyed in Japanese, but also on why some things in the English version of SxF seem inconsistent between the anime and manga.

Kieran looked up to see MC walking towards him and waving, with a minccino riding on their hat.

“Oh! Hey there, MC!”

They sat down next to him and minccino climbed down off of MC’s hat onto Kieran’s lap.

“Hi, minccino,” Kieran scratched behind her ears. She melted into his touch, delighted. “Aren’t you cute?” He looked back up at MC. “Did you catch her recently? I don’t think I’ve seen you with her before.”

“Yes, I did! I caught her in the Polar Biome for Drayton’s challenge, and we’ve grown quite fond of each other ever since. Her name is Cappuccino!”

“Chino, chino!”

“She’s very sweet.”

Cappuccino jumped back to MC and climbed up onto their shoulder. “She likes to be up high.”

Kieran smiled halfheartedly. “All Pokémon just love you, don’t they?” He looked at his feet.

“I wouldn’t say all…”

They sat in silence for a moment.

“I…” MC started, “I want to apologize.”

Kieran looked up at them.

“I shouldn’t have lied to you. That wasn’t okay, and I’m really so—”

“I’m sorry too! I’ll never lash out at you like that ever again. I promise!”

“I know. It’s okay, and I forgive you.”

“I forgive you too.”

MC smiled. “Can… Can I have a hug?”

“Oh! Y-yeah…”

The two leaned in and embraced each other. After a moment, Cappuccino crawled over to Kieran’s shoulder and nuzzled into his neck.

“Eek! H-hey!”

“I’m not doing anything…?”

They let go and MC saw that Cappuccino had found a new perch.

“Chichi! Chichi!”

“Aw, I think she likes you!”

“Mrrmph-! T-tell her to stahap, w-would you?”

“Wait, are you—”

“N-no!”

Cappuccino paused to look at MC. Kieran let out the breath he was apparently holding in.

“Hmm, I think I know something that might cheer you up.”

“Wha-?”

“Cappuccino, use tickle!”

“Chi! Chichichichichichichichi!”

Cappuccino rapidly swished her tail back and forth against Kieran’s neck and ears. When he scrunched his neck and shoulders to protect himself, she would crawl to the other side.

“Ah! Ahahahaha nohoho! S-stahahahahahahap ihihit!”

Kieran didn’t want to accidentally hurt her, so he just sat there, giggling, fists clenched in his lap.

“I was right! Now let’s see… Are you ticklish here?” MC gently poked Kieran’s tummy.

“Nahahahahahat you too!”

“Sounds like a yes. How about riiight here?” They wiggled a finger in his belly button.

“EEEHE! NohohOHOhooo!”

Cappuccino wagged her tail under his chin.

“Ehehehe *snort* I- *snort* stAHAHAHA!”

MC laughed along with him. “What about these ribs of yours?” They kneaded his lower ribs with their thumbs and Kieran shook his head and kicked his feet out.

“Chichichi!”

Wanting to help MC, Cappuccino slipped under Kieran’s shirt and clung to his bicep as she swiped her tail over his right armpit.

“W-whaAAHAHAHA! G-gehet oUT of-eEHEHEHE!”

“You have a really cute laugh, you know,” MC commented, still tickling his ribcage.

Kieran blushed.

Cappuccino then crawled down his torso, came out the bottom of his shirt and sat on his left knee.

“Chino!”

“What is it?” MC asked Cappuccino, “Do you have an idea?”

“Chino, chino!”

Cappuccino held on to Kieran’s thigh and swished her tail against the underside of his knee.

“N-no! Not my knehehehEHEHEES! I’m rehEHEHEHEALLY t-tihihicklish thehehEHEHERE!”

“Good work, Cappuccino! It’s super effective!”

“Shuhut uhuhup! You’re worse than CahahAHAHAHA! WAIHAIHAIHAIHAIT!”

MC joined in, squeezing above Kieran’s kneecaps and holding his legs still with their own while Cappuccino hopped back and forth between his legs, brushing her tail against his inner thighs and the undersides of his knees.

“AHAHAHAHAHAHA! P-PLEHEHEHEHEHEHEASE! DOHOHOHOHON’T! STAHAHAHAHAHAHAP!!”

“Don’t stop? You got it!”

“NoohOOOHOHO-AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! IHAHAI’M GONNA DIHIHIEEEEHEHEHE! MAHAHA! MEHEHEHERCY! MER-HAHAHA-HERHERHERCY!”

“Alright, Cappuccino, that’s enough.”

“Chino…”

Disoriented, Kieran leaned over onto MC’s lap and gasped for air.

“Ehehehe.. haha… ahahaha…”

MC patted his head. “You alright?”

“Yeaha…”

Cappuccino clambered over Kieran and climbed back up MC’s arm onto their shoulder. MC continued to soothe Kieran by lightly scratching his scalp, which he appeared to enjoy. They stayed like that for a few minutes until MC stopped and Kieran finally came out of his daze.

“Wha- When did I get on your lap??”

“Don’t worry about it,” MC said reassuringly, “I don’t mind.”

Embarrassed, he sat up and avoided MC’s gaze. He twiddled his hair in his fingers.

“Thanks.”

“For what?”

“F-for tickling me… I haven’t been tickled in a while, and, so uh… it was nice.”

“Oh, I’m glad!”

“Yeah.” Kieran peeked at MC and smiled, genuinely.

“Feel free to ask any time. Right, Cappuccino?”

“…”

Kieran stopped hiding his face and turned towards the pair. “Looks like she fell asleep.”

“I’m surprised you didn’t, after that.”

“I almost did, you have a magic touch. No wonder your Pokémon love your pets so much!”

my family bounced around for a while kinda dropping a family member in each place.....most have since passed away but i still have family in Alola, and Paldea and in this town no one has heard of kinda near Paldea? anyways. our town literally has 3 families living in three plots of land, with abandoned-ish buildings used as schools, etc... people outside our 'town' call this place 'An abandoned but haunted, poke-less terror-town' which is less than half right. Pokémon, or monmon as we call them stay clear from even seeing this place, making it quite peaceful, it's not haunted though. the few people left who know of this place describe it that way, but most of those great(x4) grand parents are long gone so....yeah. boring but not boring *IS* a thing, and I live in it.

a Pikachu that can only say pika-chi instead of its actual name

and an eevee that was forced to double evolve at the exact same time, causing a glacion eevee, rather than glacion or just stay as an eevee. at least that's my guess....she has water, ice, and normal type moves so.....*shrug*

Does the baseless, fan perception that Goku couldn't care less if Chichi cheated on him with Trunks or Vegeta disgust you as much as the idea of Krillin getting cucked by 18? (Also can't help but feel that it's not a coincidence that people who hold those beliefs/write those stories always involve Trunks or Vegeta).

Here's the thing, the idea that Chi-Chi would ever WILLINGLY cheat on Goku is what disgusts me. That woman is nothing but faithful, and even if Goku drives her crazy, she loves him to death. Even when he's dead and gone she doesn't really move on, and even hearing that he's coming back for a single day she gets giddy and even considers getting a makeover just to look nice for the reunion. So if anything, that level of gross mischaracterization hurts most. I also think some people seem to conflate the idea of Goku "not caring" with the fact that Goku simply couldn't fathom that level of betrayal. He has no interest in sleeping with anyone else, or being romantically involved with anyone else. The thought, the temptation even, it just never enters his mind. But the idea that he wouldn't be emotionally hurt or impacted if she did is ridiculous. As for why Vegeta and Trunks? Saiyans. Whenever anyone does these sorts of cheating or "cuck" fics, it's almost exclusively with a Saiyan (though Roshi may be tossed into the mix if 18's involved for... some reason). They see them as "alpha males" and so the only sorts of men women would want to be with... and in the case of some, it's also a chance for self-inserting into a love affair with a buff weremonkey. It's why those fics often tend to give them bestial and/or vampiric traits when they "mate" with someone. Fantasy, self-insertion, shallow reasons, you name it. But you'll rarely see any of that with, say, most of the human characters, even the ones seen as handsome. Too vanilla. And since Gohan and Goten really aren't options for Chi-Chi (unless they're willing to cross some lines which should not be crossed) then yeah, that really only leaves Vegeta or Trunks. Or Broly, seen that a few times too, sadly. It's amazing how this fandom seems to embrace every negative stereotype at times. Rampant sexism, toxic masculinity, inserting their biases into "facts" about the series, assuming, assigning, or ignoring intent at will, adopting whichever is most convenient... It's a constant headache.

Gohan gazed lovingly into Videl's eyes as they lay in bed, his fingers gently caressing her cheek. "I can't even begin to describe how happy I am, Videl. You, Pan, Piccolo, our home, my career…I don’t know how I got to be this lucky.”

Videl smiled, leaning into his touch. “You’re a good man, Gohan. That’s enough to earn it.”

He shook his head. “I could name a hundred good men without as wonderful a wife as you are.”

“Oh, stop! You’re making me blush!”

He leaned in, kissing over her tinted cheeks. “No, really. I can’t thank you enough for pushing me to be honest about my feelings for Piccolo. It’s like I’ve stepped out of a shadow I didn’t know was there, finally seeing the sun for what it is.”

"I'm glad it was the right decision. Seeing you and Piccolo together...the way you look at each other, you understand each other in a way I don’t think I could understand. It’s clear this relationship is important to you.”

“It is,” Gohan agreed, his thoughts drifting to the countless moments when Piccolo’s steadfast presence had offered him solace and guidance. Their bond that had evolved into something profoundly impactful on his life and, by extension, on his family’s. 

Videl shifted closer. “And I know it's been wonderful for Pan too, having another caring parental figure in her life."

"It really has. Piccolo is so gentle and patient with her. He's helped me learn new parenting styles."

Videl nodded thoughtfully. "You should tell your family. I know you've been hesitant, but they deserve to know, especially when it’s something that makes us this happy. And I think they'll understand, especially your father."

He sighed, feeling the warmth of her suggestion mingled with the trepidation that came with it. His father would certainly be confused, but it was his mother he was worried about. Her strict rules and traditional values would surely clash with the unconventional nature of his relationship with Piccolo. “You know how my mom is. She’ll see him as a threat to our family.”

“Maybe, but we’ll make her come around. She loves you, Gohan. She wants you to be happy. You just need to make her see that this is your happiness.”

"You're right, as always." He pulled her tight against him. "I don't know what I'd do without you, Videl. Your unconditional love and support means everything to me. I promise, I'll tell them soon."

Videl kissed him tenderly. "I'm proud of you. And I know they will be too."

Gohan smiled as he watched Piccolo gently play with Pan in the living room. She giggled and grabbed at his antennae, her tiny hands exploring the ridges and curves. A soft chuckle rumbled from the Namekian's chest, a sound that had become surprisingly tender and familiar within their home.

"You're getting so big, little one," Piccolo murmured. "Soon you'll be strong enough to start training with your dad and me."

Pan babbled happily in response. Gohan felt his heart swell with love and pride. Having Piccolo in his daughter's life meant the world to him.

As Pan became distracted by her toys, Piccolo turned to Gohan, his expression growing serious. "Gohan, we need to talk about our relationship and how it will impact Pan's upbringing."

Gohan nodded, giving Piccolo his full attention. "Of course, what's on your mind?"

"I know your family doesn't know about us. And while I'll support whatever you decide, I do have concerns about Pan growing up with secrecy and shame around our bond." Piccolo's eyes bored intensely into Gohan's.

The half-Saiyan lowered his head. “I know. I already promised Videl I’d tell them. I’m just worried about how my mom’s going to react. You know she doesn’t like you very much.”

"Then, you will make Chichi see reason. Pan deserves to understand this relationship as benign and natural. I won't have her believing her father is doing something wrong." Piccolo's voice grew firm with conviction. "You need to find your courage and conviction, Gohan. Decide what we are to each other, and let no one make you feel ashamed."

“Even if it means confronting misunderstandings and prejudice?”

“Especially then,” Piccolo affirmed, his expression resolute. “You’re a father, Gohan. Your choices shape the world Pan grows up in. She needs to see strength in conviction and the love in our kinship–not fear or doubt.”

Gohan was taken aback by Piccolo's intensity. But he knew Piccolo was right - he had to stop hiding. For Pan's sake, and his own. It was time to stand tall and declare his truth.

“I’ll stop hiding. For Pan, for Videl, for us. It’s time I show the world the family we’ve built together.”

Piccolo gave a rare smile. “That’s the man I trained you to be.”

The laughter and chatter within the warmly lit living room abruptly ceased as the front door swung open with a resounding thud that echoed through the house. Chichi stood framed in the doorway, her figure rigid and imposing as her eyes landed on the scene before her.

Gohan, Piccolo, and little Pan were nestled together on the couch. Gohan's arm was draped over Piccolo's broad shoulders, while Pan giggled, tucked between them, her tiny hands squeezing over the pink patches of skin on the Namekian’s arms.

"Mom!" Gohan's voice wavered between surprise and concern as he stood up. This isn’t how he’d wanted this to happen. Not with them suggesting the implications he knew she would make, and certainly not with Pan there to witness the argument.

“Chichi,” Piccolo acknowledged, sounding surprisingly calm. 

"What is going on here?" Chichi demanded, her voice shrill.

Unsure how to begin to diffuse the situation, all Gohan said was, “I didn’t know you were coming.”

It was the wrong thing to say, giving her more room to speculate. "Clearly not, or you wouldn't be carrying on like this in front of my granddaughter!" Chichi glared at Piccolo. “Is this what you do when your wife is away?”

Gohan tried to muster up his courage but his words sounded weak in comparison to his mother’s dramatics. “It isn’t like that.” 

"Unbelievable! I didn't raise you to be disloyal! After everything Videl has done for you, this is how you repay her?" Her voice was laced with accusation.

Turning her fury on Piccolo, she jabbed a finger his way. "And you! I should never have let you near my son! You've been a bad influence from the start!"

It was the straw that broke him. Anger he hadn’t even realized he carried erupted to the surface. How dare she treat him that way? It was one thing to belittle her husband or children, but Piccolo deserved nothing but respect.

Shaking, Gohan stepped between them. “Stop it! I won’t let you talk about him that way!”

Pan was used to hearing her grandmother raise her voice, but Gohan almost never yelled. The little girl started wailing.

Instantly, guilt set in, and Gohan attempted to soothe her. “Everything’s okay, sweetie.”

Her crying eased but didn’t stop completely. Piccolo cradled her against his chest. “I am taking her outside. She does not need to hear this.”

“Thank you,” Gohan said, touching his shoulder.

As soon as Piccolo was out of the door, his mother spoke again. “Are you sure you want to trust him with her?”

Gohan glared, his anger flaring again. “Oh course, I do.”

“He kidnapped you, what if he steals her away, too? I’ve heard him talking about training.”

There was no hesitation in his response. “He isn’t going to kidnap, Pan.”

“Why do you trust him so much?”

“Because he has always been there for me. He’s honest and loyal. The only reason he kidnapped me was because the world was in danger and you refused to let me train.”

“You were just a little boy.”

“Yes, I was.”

There was a moment of silence as they both mourned him having to grow up too fast. 

“I knew I should have protected you more…”

 “Yes, you should have. You should have protected my childhood and let me play like a normal kid. But you also should have let me train so that we had a chance of surviving.”

Chichi was shaking now and holding her mouth like she was about to cry. “I was scared. I didn’t want anything to happen to you.”

“I know.” Gohan understood where she had been coming from more now than ever. He didn’t want anything to happen to Pan either. “But if we hadn’t done anything, everyone would have all died.”

“I just wanted you to have a normal life.”

“Normal?” Gohan’s hand clenched into a fist. “You call being stuck inside a single room studying all day normal? I wasn’t allowed to play with other kids. The only company I got was during training. You micromanaged every aspect of my life!”

“Because I wanted the best for you!” Chichi shot back, her fist balled at her sides too now. “I didn’t want you to waste your potential the way your father has…Always chasing battles and leaving his family behind!”

Gohan laughed bitterly. "Oh, so it's Dad's fault now? You're the one who never let me make my own choices!"

The dam had burst. Years of resentment poured out of him.

Pacing back and forth, his frustration boiled over. "All I ever wanted was to be a normal kid! To play and make friends. But instead I was forced to study all day, then throw myself into battle after battle. Did you ever ask what I wanted?"

Chichi opened her mouth to respond, but he barreled on.

"No! It was always about what you and Dad wanted. At least Dad had an excuse. It’s Saiyan nature to thirst for power and pass on their legacy, but you? All you wanted was to live the life you never had through me. But I'm not just an extension of you and Dad. I'm my own person!"

Chichi sank into a chair, looking stricken. "I'm so sorry, Gohan," she said softly. "I thought I was doing the right thing...giving you the life I always wished I had. But I see now that I was wrong. I didn’t mean to hurt you."

Gohan's anger melted away. He sat down across from his mother, his eyes full of sadness rather than bitterness. "I know, Mom.” 

Gohan took a deep breath as Chichi wiped tears from her eyes. He knew this conversation was difficult, but it was time she understood the truth.

"I know you and Dad love me," he continued gently. "But I can't pretend anymore. Piccolo has been more of a father to me than Dad ever was. He actually cared about my interests and what I wanted. He didn't just see me as a means to defeat the next enemy."

Chichi bristled slightly at the criticism of Goku, but she held her tongue. 

"Dad was hardly around," he went on. "He was either dead or off training. But Piccolo was there. He taught me how to fight, yes, but also how to think and make my own choices. If it wasn't for him...I wouldn’t be who I am today."

“That’s what I’m afraid of.” Chichi’s face contorted with a mixture of hurt and desperation. “I don’t want you to regret the choices you make because of his influence.”

“The only thing I regret is not standing up for myself sooner. I am an adult. You can’t control my decisions anymore, and I choose to have Piccolo in my life–in our lives.”

There was a moment of silence as Chichi sucked in a breath and released it, presumably trying to remain calm. “I don’t care if you want him in your life or not. It is unfair to treat your wife like this.”

“Videl knows. How I feel and what we do.”

She was taken aback by that information. “You are fucking him.” The verb sounded foreign and ugly in her mouth.

“No, I’m not,” he answered, eyes and voice both laced with ice.

“You expect me to believe that when you were just canoodling on the couch?”

“It doesn’t even matter. This isn’t about you, Mom. This is about my family.”

“I am your family.”

“Yes, you are. But you don’t get to dictate this. We are happy.”

“Videl certainly–”

He cut her off, words resolute. “Videl is more than supportive. And Pan adores Piccolo.” 

“She is supportive?” Chichi slumped in her seat. It was as if she was a balloon of hot air and the air had all ran out. 

Gohan reached out to touch her hand, his voice softening. “Are you okay?”

“I just…I suppose I never thought your relationship could be that secure. She must really love you.”

“Dad has his faults, but he loves you, too.”

“I know. It’s just easy to forget sometimes.”

Gohan waited, allowing her time to process the complexities of her own marriage before continuing. “I know you’ve always wanted what’s best for me. But I need you to understand that this is what’s best for me–no, for our family. This is the life I want. With Videl, and Piccolo, and Pan. You have to accept that."

Chichi stood up and went to him, embracing her son tightly. "You're right, Gohan. I'm so sorry I never realized how much Piccolo means to you. All I could see was my baby being taken away from me. But you aren’t a baby anymore, and instead of taking you away, he’s shaping you into a wonderful man. It won’t be easy, but…your happiness is the most important thing."

Gohan returned the embrace, feeling the weight of years lift from his heart. It had taken so long, but finally his mother understood.

They broke apart when the front door opened, revealing Piccolo cradling a sleeping Pan. “I assume you two have sorted things out?”

Chichi nodded slowly, a fragile smile tugging at her lips as she looked at the way the Namekian cradled her granddaughter. “Yes,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

She met Piccolo’s gaze. “Piccolo,” she began, voice unsteady with emotion. “I’m sorry for how I’ve treated you. You’ve been a part of this family and I…”

He gave a solemn nod. “Apology accepted.”

Chichi let out a breath, relief flooding her features. She stepped forward and, to Piccolo's great surprise, enveloped him in a tentative hug. After a stunned moment, he gently returned it.

Gohan beamed as he watched the exchange. The rift between two of the most important people in his life was finally healing.

Just then, the front door opened again and Videl walked in, stopping short at the scene before her. "Oh wow, this is a surprise!" she exclaimed, taking in Piccolo and Chichi's embrace and her husband’s obvious happiness.

Chichi pulled back from Piccolo and turned to her daughter-in-law with a smile. "We're celebrating the new addition to our family," she said warmly, glancing at Piccolo.

Videl's eyes lit up with understanding. She crossed the room to slip an arm around Gohan's waist.

"Well in that case," she said, "I think this calls for a feast!”

As Videl moved to the kitchen, Gohan went over to his mother again. “Can you let me be the one to tell Dad and Goten?”

Chichi giggled. “Of course! I can’t say I understand it myself, let alone well enough to explain to your father of all people.”

Gohan couldn’t help laughing as well. If anyone was going to need a simple but clear explanation, it would be his father. “Maybe I will make him some slides like I do for my students.”

She grinned. “Be careful, that might scare him away.”

He put an arm around her shoulder and started leading her toward the dining room. “That’s a good point. Since you’re staying, how about I tell you more about our relationship.”

Chichi smiled. “I’m willing to listen.”

Marriage. 5

Chapter 5: Year 1. Part 2

If I could land 3 kicks and 3 punches, before lunch, I’ll count that as a success. And so, it began.

By the time lunch time came around I was surprised at myself. For the fact I landed more hits than excepted. I was so proud of myself that I thought I should have made training a game from the start. At least, put a challenge on myself. I was so happy that I didn’t notice the looks Kami and Mr. Popo gave me. “Goku, are you ok?”

“Yeah, why?”

“Just that you’re eating more than your usual amount.”

“Is that a bad thing? I just used up a lot of energy, is all.” Kami nodded and walked out the room. Once lunch was done, I follow Mr. Popo to the steps in front of the temple. Today’s lesson was about nature.

…

“Good Chichi. Let’s take a break.”

“I’m ok dad. I would like to get a few more in before we return for lunch.”

“Chichi, you sure you haven’t done enough sit-ups?” Dad is right. After one more, I sat up and crossed my legs. I decided to meditate before I got up fully. Today already felt like a long day, yet it wasn’t over. After meditating for half an hour, me and dad went into our capsule home. It’s been two months since he promised to train me.

At first, it was just like it was when I was a kid. But then, dad forced me to stop wearing my armor. By now I already understood why. Doesn’t make any less sad. I had to except I was no longer a child, with a child body. So, I adopted more of a tai-chi uniform. I like how it flows with my movements, and it looks nice. Instead of a traditions gi, I wear a cheongsam on top. Even though dad trains me, I still try to practice my katas on my own, when he’s not looking.

Once inside the home, I started up cooking our lunch. Also, since starting training, I started teaching myself other things. Since my dream was still to be a simple house wife, I had to learn how to be one. Whenever we made it a new town or city, along our training path, I always made sure to buy plenty of books. Once I sat lunch on the table, I called out to dad to join me.

As we sat down to eat, I couldn’t help myself to read a book. I made sure it wasn’t a book I recently bought. It was a simple book filled with romantic poetry. It’s actually one of my favorite things to read. It was not until I finished one of the poems that I noticed dad looking my way. “Is something wrong, dad?”

“I’ve noticed you been buying a lot of books lately. Is there a reason why?”

“Because I want to learn so much. And if, at the end, I was to become queen, shouldn’t I know as much as possible to help others?” This answer seemed to pleased dad, even though it wasn’t a lie either. I do want to help other, and I want to learn so much.

“Are any of them new cook books?”

At this I got excited and ran to my temporary room, to get my latest book. I came back and went on a rant how I want to try cooking all these foods. Once or twice I mention how I hoped Goku would like my cooking. Without me knowing, daddy frown every time I mention Goku. I was just too excited to notice.

Once lunch was over it was time for my ‘proper lady’ lessons. I didn’t really like this part of the day. I had to learn to hide any emotions. I had to learn to stay calm, no matter how angry something got me. But can you blame me? I after all, have my dad’s famous temper. I remembered one time I punched a boy for bullying a smaller girl. The group with him called me names, but I ignored them. They weren’t worth my time.

Soon after that girl and I became friends. She was the only friend I had in our village. I didn’t understand why nobody liked me. But it didn’t bother me, cause at least I had one friend. And there was always Goku.

After our two-months training away home, dad was ready to go home. I was a different story. I wanted to train more. Once back at our village we were greeted by one of our eldest maid. With her was her grandson, Li. He was a weird boy. Whenever his grandma brought him over, he would always follow me. It bugged me a lot. Whenever I was in the garden, trying to get a workout going, he would show up and watch. At the beginning, I didn’t mind. After a few times, he tried talking to me, that what annoyed me.

Li would go on and on about how cute I looked. He would then question why did I even want to be strong. “It’s not like it matter. Grandma says it’s a waste, and it’s not proper.” Whenever he said that I left and went to my room to finish my work out. There were times he would even try to get into my room, while I’m trying to change.

I told dad this, but he insist that Li is just trying to be my friend. It sure didn’t feel that way. How would my Goku react to this? Would he be like daddy? Or would he be on my side? Whatever the answer might be, I just hope Li never touches me. If he did to damn what daddy says.

We stood home for a month. During that month daddy threw parties, and invited everyone who had a son my age. During these parties I had to dance which of the boys. While dancing with one of them, he tried grabbing my butt. I reactivity punched him. I did so hard he flew to the back wall. I was so angry I failed to notice how disappointed my father looked at me. After taking shallow breaths to calm down, I left the ball room.

Halfway to my room I noticed Li was following me. “So what now princess?” The way he said that pissed me off. I had every mind to punch him too, but I ignored him and went to my room. I had enough! I changed out of this big stuffy dress, and put on my uniform.

I packed up, and left a note for dad. In the note I stated I was going off training to cool off. And for him to not worry about me. I then took my bookbag, made sure I had capsules and left. I aimless traveled to the ocean. I was chased by dinosaurs and other monsters. Times like this I wish I had my helmet, but I can’t rely on that anymore. I had to find my own strengths.

3 days had passed and I have finally returned home. I was greeted by a very worried daddy. He was sobbing as he picked me up, in a tight hug. He said we should throw a party to celebrate my return. I kindly asked that we didn’t do that. I don’t need parties and being surrounded by people. At first it seemed my father understood. While, until 4 months later, he threw another party when we returned for a training mission. At this rate I will never be strong as Goku.

I confronted my dad about this and told me how everyone needs rest. Rest? “You call this rest!” I was so mad. I could understand if we came home and all we did was relax, and catch our strength. But nope, we come home and he plans a huge party. Parties are nice, but I don’t even get a chance to relax for a few days. Well time to put up my perfect princess attitude and get on with it.

…

Two months into these lessons and I swear I was getting more and more bored. The math stuff was helpful when putting it into my training. The reading and writing I didn’t get but I tried reasoning with Mr. Popo about it. Surprised he agreed to end those. But he did teach me other stuff, like health and biology. It made sense, since I could imply it into my training.

I was getting better each day with understanding living energy. I was even able to officially beat that damn doll. So today Mr. Popo was going to spar with me. I still couldn’t beat him, but I was getting close. Sometimes he would mention something about a temper. I asked him once what that was. He answered by simply punching and I got mad and was going to try to punch him. He then said, “That’s a temper.”

So guess it’s another word for mad. So, another word added to the list of things I need to control. Lately living up here I been making a lot of list. Like things I had to get a better hand of, things I wanted to ask my friends, and stuff I would never tell a soul.

It was almost a year into this training and Kami stated it was time I trained with weighted clothes.

“Her Resolution, His Origin” part 1 - 1/3

The sequel of “The Iron Woman”, and is also chapter 5 of “The UNSPOKEN” webcomic series (originally named #truten in highschool au). Can be read as a stand-alone work, but reading the previous chapter or the whole webcomic is still recommended.

Super brief summary: Goten and Trunks were enjoying some last summer days near Goten’s place, and Chichi fell asleep while reminiscing about her youngest but growing up son. We’re basically in a flash-back from her dreams.

This one time I was a TA for a math class in high school and the teacher was like can you hand these papers back to Jackie and I was like huh??? WHO??? There is no Jackie in this class. But he was talking about Jiaqi....... I didn’t know she pronounced her name in English like that 😔

How I got my Pikachu

I was having horrible luck catching my first monmon, but I heard a rustle...then a scream! 'Pikaaa!!' A fleeing Pikachu, but the oddest thing happened. It ran towards me, dead stopped and said 'Pika-CHI!!' before darting between my legs past me. I turned quickly trying to stop the poor Pikachu from darting right into a giant crater...but was too late. without thinking i jumped into the massive hole after the Pikachu, caught it, and swung it onto my belly, my back facing the ancient meteor debris. the last thing i remember was waking up to the Pikachu striking the sky with lightning exhausted and trembling from constant strikes. it wasn't striking anything, and i passed out again. I ended up waking up in a hospital, looking around and wondering where the Pikachu is. not long after that thought crossed my mind some nurses rushed in looking around frantically before rushing right back out. i weakly checked for broken bones and surprisingly my back was super stiff but nothing was broken. I *WAS* gonna take it slow but so many freaked out screeches 'CHI! PIKACHI!! PIKAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!' really got my attention. I jolted up and ran despite the pain all over, and i guess adrenaline kicked in because the limping excuse for a run i was forced to use changed to a grimace filled face with an actual sprint. a bunch of nurses had cornered it, literally using their legs and bodies around it closing all exits from the corner. a Pokécenter employee and a professor i didn't recognize came in and stared at me in shock. they both just stared and spoke with one another. finally they talked to me 'are you the one that pikachu saved?' I answered 'actually....we saved each other... what is going on, why is that pikachu literally being cornered??' they looked at each other grimly before asking. 'is that pikachu yours, if so...you should be arrested.' My eyes grew wide and i barely stammered out 'what??' before they went to get the pikachu. with a new fear unlocked and a fresh wave of adrenalin i bolted, not-so-lightly shoved one of the blockading nurses and caught the pikachu, holding it close i asked them all 'what is going on?!? I saved this pikachu from the fall, and now your saying i should be ARRESTED??' they both look confused as the pikachu happily says 'pikachi' and nuzzles me. they speak amongst themselves and i notice a man's shape as his shadow leaves from the corner right next to the window. pikachu notices and zaps the window into shattering, as the man began to run, and the unknown professor leaps and sprints after him, pulling off his professor jacket showing a police uniform. after cuffing him and bringing him into custody i begin to collapse from the exertion. the nurses quickly catch me and pikachu is right there when i wake up. DB AU - The Gyū Kingdom Legacy

DB au where Gyū Maō gets back the Gyū royal fortune by entering cooking competitions. And winning.

(Note that his Chinese name is Zhōng Chùn (忠犉) & Mówang (魔王) is his title. His Japanese name is Tadashi Gyū (狩野牛) & Maō (魔王) is his title.)

Toriyama canonically says that Ox is one of the 2 greatest chefs in the universe. The other being Yamcha. So, I say, let them exercise that skill. Also, why did ChiChi need Hakakke to teach her to cook when her dad was so good at it? As such, I hc that that was the one thing she didn't need to be taught &, as such, there's another best cook in the universe & her name is ChiChi.

Also, ChiChi & her sons, then later Pan, having to learn etiquette & whatnot because they're royalty of the Gyū Kingdom.

Like, I wanna see ChiChi as the future queen & Goku as her consort, but him being completely out of his depth. Gohan especially, considering the fact that he's the Crown Prince of the Gyū Kingdom & is one day expected to be the new Ox King.

I've only ever seen 1 fic ever go into this sort of thing & I wanna see it more.

I'd like to add on to this, ChiChi's mother being an Amazon from Themyscira who had been sent to touch base with their Chinese branch in Jusenkyo before eventually meeting Tadashi & starting a family. Therefore, Chi-Chi would've inherited her warrior race capabilities. At the same time, I believe that her father, Tadashi Gyū, is descended from Oni or Ushi Yōkai, meaning that his horns are real. So, she's also part yōkai.

This would give Chi-Chi access to yōki, something pretty different from regular ki, as well as mahō or magic. I actually think that the armor she wore as a kid was probably of either Amazon or yōkai make. Either or.

I want ChiChi to eventually learn some of her ancestral techniques, such as the Όπλα της Αράχνη (pronounced: Ópla tis Arákhnē | literally: Arms of Arachne). Made to honor Athena's humbling of Arachne by turning her into a spider. This technique works much like the Shiyōken, but instead of just 2 extra arms, the Amazon is granted 4, giving her a total of 8 limbs when including legs. The thing about the Arms of Arachne is only women of Amazon descent can use it.

Amazons also have a much more 'Spartan' fighting style. Meaning that they exploit certain weaknesses that most everybody has.

the journey to a private location was dreadful, aimi's stomach was in knots the entire time. am i in trouble? do they hate me? did i do something wrong? many questions alike run through her mind before senju turns and finally speaks, making aimi stop in her tracks. momentary confusion consumes her as she gazes at the other. chichi...? ❝ u-um... i don't know anyone named chichi- ❞ perhaps she was mistaken? this may just be one huge mistake. raising a hand, she brushes back her hair and clears her throat. ❝ i may have gotten it wrong then, sorry! the boy i'm thinking about is called sanzu. ❞ her dear, very strange friend who she spends a lot of time with just pampering him with self-care. but because of this, she can describe his looks perfectly.

❝ he's not too tall with very pretty long hair - same kind of colour as mine, maybe a shade lighter. he wears a mask all the time but he has two scars here, ❞ raising two fingers, the girl points to the corners of her mouth. giving a satisfied nod, aimi waits for any sort of reaction from her new friend, half expecting to receive a punch in the face for some reason. ❝ oh- and he has eyes like yours... i don't know if i'm thinking of the same boy... ❞

Ok so I put out a message on tumbler to find the aurthor who wrote a gokuxchichi fan fiction where whis and chichi became friends goku was jealous so was beerus and bulma thought chichi was trying to get the advantage for goku over vegeta it’s my favorite dragon ball fanfiction EVER written and I know the authors name was 26chapters on this website and on the fan fiction website but they deleted most of there stories and I have no way of reaching out to them or knowing what platform there on if anyone could help me out I’d be VERY grateful I just want to be able to read that story over and over again it makes me feel so warm inside reading it and it’s a comfort story for me and I miss reading it so if anybody could help please let me know !

BNHA Kid Headcanons

KIRIBAKU

-Eijirou had always wanted a lot of kids

-and Katsuki can't say no to his husband

-so there's 5 of them

-(damn 5 whole children)

-their kids call them Papa (Eijirou) and Dad (Katsuki)

-the first one is a girl

-she's just a copy-paste katsuki (personality wise) but with a better attitude

-they were figuring out how to raise kids

-they did pretty well, I think

-Her quirk is Fragmentation (She can make spikes on her body, then shoot them off like missles)

-her name is Mieko (Already Prosperous)

-the second one was a boy

-he ended up much more like Eijirou

-overall a radical little dude

-his quirk is Lavanic (he secretes lava like how Mina secretes acid)

-Izuku respected his wishes and accepted the fact that they probably wouldn't have kids

-until Shouto had a chat with Natsuo (after Natsu became a dad)

SHINKAMISERO

-Denki and Hanta were the ones most excited to have kids at first, and Hitoshi was like 'cool go nuts I'll help raise them'

-So, biologically, their first kid's parents are Hanta and Denki

-but he's still very close to Hitoshi

-he looks and acts a lot like Hanta

-he's an all around sk8r boi

-his quirk is Electric Tape (basically Hanta's quirk but he can send and harness electricity via his tape)

-His name is Takeo (Warrior)

-one day when he was young, he had a really bad nightmare, and the only one of his dads awake was Hitoshi (since he's an insomniac)

-Hitoshi listened to his boy's rambling, and told him that no matter what monster or villain comes after him, he promises that he'd always protect him

-but one day, some B-tier villains broke into their home while Hanta and Denki were out doing Hero things

-Hitoshi tried to take them down, but they anticipated fighting him and had a strategy to take him down and ended up knocking him out

-when he was woken up by the police, they discovered that Takeo had been taken by the villains

-for five days, the villains had held him for ransom

-and for those five days, Hitoshi worked literally non-stop to try and track down and rescue Takeo

-after those five days, they ended up paying the ransom, and Takeo was returned to the police and his family safely

-except for a large gash on his shoulder he got during the initial break-in

-the whole event deterred Hitoshi from having more kids

-he was very anxious about being there for Takeo, and Hanta and Denki understood that

-so he and his husbands didn't have kids for like 15 years

-at this point, Takeo is a teenager, more independent, and is stronger/can tale care of himself

-Hitoshi feels better now about being able to put his attention elsewhere (focus less on Takeo)

-so he brought up to his husbands "Hey, do ya maybe wanna have another kid?"

-and they were like "omigosh yeah totally yes let us have another child"

-and there were twins!

-one boy and one girl!

-Hitoshi was just as confused as Baku when twins showed up

-"hol' up I only signed up for 1 kid not 2"

-"too bad they're yours"

-Biologically speaking, both of them are Hitoshi's, but the boy has Denki's DNA and the girl has Hanta's

-it's a bit weird for Takeo to have newborn siblings, but he loves them regardless!

AOMINA

-since I HC that Yuuga is graysexual, he didn't really vibe with kids for a while after they were married

-but Mina was totally fine with that!

-"hey it means I can still say fuck in my own house it's cool it's cool"

-although when Mina expressed further interest in kids a bit down the line, Yuuga was like "mmmmokay why not"

-and they had a girl!

-she has pink skin and weird eyes like Mina, but blonde hair and purple eyes like Yuuga!

-she also doesn't have horns

-she's very much like Mina

-she comes off as narcissistic at times, but she just has enough self-confidence for two people

-her quirk is Glo Splash (from one side of her body, she secretes one of the chemicals that make up the liquid in glow sticks, and the other half of her secretes the other chemical. She can mix them together to make it glow!)

-her name is Minako (child of Mina)

-Mina is not allowed to name their children anymore

-so when their son is born, Yuuga named him

-he got pink hair and horns and yellow eyes, but normal skin and normal eyes

-he's oddly very timid and anxious, which gives him a disconnect from the rest of his outgoing family

-his quirk is Lazer Horn (he can shoot lasers like Yuuga's from his horns)

-the kids have hyphenated last names (Ashido-Aoyama) as opposed to having only one last name like their parents

-since Tooru was already pregananant when they got married, their first kid was quite a tad older than the majority of their Classmate's kids
