Also itâs really fascinating because in a certain way Austen finds the trope of redemption through romance/good girl fixes bad boy dead but in an even realer way Henry is just the wrong candidate for it. Or, to be even more accurate, the setup of Henry and Fanny is the wrong match for it and thatâs what makes it funny. The truth is that Henry objectifies her, NOT physically. His appreciation of her beauty is hands down the most romantic thing he feels for her but he objectifies her morals and her goodness, in essence: her character. He, and in a different but equally real way Mary treat Fanny like a doll and every time she does something of quality they react with surprise and delight as if a doll had done it. The fact that the surprise and delight are genuine makes it worse because itâs even more objectifying. Theyâre like âlook at the doll speak! The doll said something incisive and profound! The doll doesnât even know of what quality she is made because sheâs so simple! Noble simplicity!â And it is objectively condescending andânot to beat a dead horse here!!!â truly objectifying. They both see and sense her superiority to the rest of Mansfield but that doesnât mean that they treat her like a person. Henry makes much of her, refuses to listen to what she actually wants, enlists Sir Thomas against her, feels no scruple whatsoever about putting pressure on her, and doesnât know her well enough to know that she does âknow her own mindâ despite not knowing her own manner. Heâs also the wrong candidate for this trope because heâs too knowing and observant. He KNOWS heâs in the trope. Heâs kind of like âhmmm Fanny redeeming me, Fanny changing me, wow, love to consider it from a moral aesthetic point of view, what a flower in her cap that would be and how it would stick it to the rest of the Mansfield crewâ and so heâs not set up to be surprised or charmed into compassion and real love 1) because heâs self-aware of the good it would do him and 2) because he gets ahead of the good by manipulating it for his own schemes. Alleviating boredom/sticking it to Mansfield and co. being the two main ones for as far as I can tell. He even knows that if he just waits, if he just holds out that âabsence, time, and distance,â as he says, will speak for him. Will clear his way. Will work on Fannyâs heart. Because it IS a powerful trope for a reason! And especially if Edmund was out of the picture re: Mary what else would there be for her to do? But thatâs the thing. He SEES the truth of it and sees the inevitability of it but only because heâs thinking of this in terms of winningâwinning her, but also just winning at the scheme, pulling the con. True love doesnât do that. The absence, time, and distance of which heâs speaking would be enacted by someone with a loving heart in such a different way because it would just be the simple act of compassion and not wanting to trouble the beloved that would be the motivator. It would be Darcy going back to his normal life after the Hunsford proposal with no intention of winning Lizzy back or determination to pursue her or need to clarify anything past the letter but still with love in his heart for her. Henry doesnât have that love and never did and so cannot be changed by it. He plays the stakes of it all like a game and because Fanny isnât playing it at all he loses, in every possible way.
#and Edmund treats her like a person always#he is a FOOL especially re: Mary and he is blind but he stood up for her. wants her happiness. protects her from Aunt Norris.#thinks about what she wants and treats her neither as an invisible purpose or a person on a pedestal#and he just loves her. took him some time to realize it was romantic but he DOES love her. always has!#mansfield park

so I just read a post from @everythingiloveblog andâfirst of all go check it out it has incredible insights and constructive criticismâ I feel OP has made an incredible point which brings me to something that bothers me from episode 10:
Okay. I understand Jack and Joke have aâŚvery unusual relationship. I know theyâve been through hell and back, together and apart, and their bond is stronger than ever.
And, ever since the beginning, they show us a dynamic that doesnât promise to be all âlovey-doveyâ or cute or anything like that.
Thatâs fine. Weâre all here for it. Every relationship is different, and actors Yin and War have made it clear Jack and Jokeâs dynamic was going to be different.
But, and this is a big, big but, there are things I do not agree with, and Iâll start by casting light on this moment right here where they say âI love youâ for the first time.
Emphasis on the first time.
That was not a first time âI love youâ. Thatâs not how you say I love you for the first time to your lover with whom youâve been through hell and back.
I mean yes, theyâve shown it plenty, but still. This moment was, and Iâm very sorry if I ruffle some feathers, to me, very bro-coded (thereâs nothing wrong with that, itâs just not very engaging for me)
And as much as I love their dynamic, as much as I love their characters, it felt incredibly underwhelming and lacking of a tenderness I was desperately craving after such a long slow burn. I know I may be coming from a more âromanticâ point of view, but whatâs wrong with a little romance?
I really would have loved them to be a bit sweeter, or more tender about it.
Another thing is the closing scene at the hospital; sure, Joke later tells Jack he was the one who betrayed, but Jack didnât know that right away, and the first thing he saw was the man he loves in shambles, bawling his eyes out, visibly in need to be held, and he didnât take him into his arms nor made any move to get at least physically closer to him.
That put me off, if Iâm being honest. Arenât they supposed to be in love and care for one another? Jack did say âIâll only focus on youâ and, yeah, heâs angry and confused about Save and worried about his daughter but it would have been very human of him to at least seek and give comfort to the person he loves.
They do have their moments, their chemistry is top tier, and thatâs undeniable. But there are certain little actions that would be very realistic for them to partake in, and it leaves me a tad unsatisfied when they donât.
Of course, Iâm still eating this up, Iâll take anything. Yin and War did an incredible job with this show, and this is just a bit of criticism, done in my most humble, respectful opinion.
Thanks for reading! I know some will not agree and thatâs fine! Letâs just all be respectful about it! â¨đŤśđ˝

tss is kind of a weird manga if you think about it. I've been doing that a lot
its main goal is to be a sequel to flowers, and in that a sequel to the original shaman king, but then you read it and that's. really just the tip of the iceberg. tss is already a confusing, messy story if you know what it's doing, but if you go into it only having read og shaman king and flowers (like I did the first time around) you are going to be so lost
takei has this habit of reusing characters and concepts in his work, he's been doing it literally since the beginning. if we're counting each one separately (including alumi), he's written five anna the itakos. the anna that shows up in butsu zone is almost identical to anna from the original oneshot. he does this reduce reuse recycle thing in shaman king too, most obviously with anna and gandhara. and of course this continues into the mainline sequels.
flowers is interesting in comparison to tss, because it is a shaman king sequel in the way you'd expect. it repeats many of the same characters and plot beats as the original (apathetic main character, itako no anna fiance, edgy rival with a goth older sister). hana even mentions a few times that he doesn't want to relive the same beats as his father. compared to tss, the prior work flowers draws on the most is shaman king. for a few chapters. because then we get yahabe.
yahabe is probably the cleanest copy paste into the shaman king universe, excluding butsu zone. it was a oneshot that wrapped itself up after clearly defining its premise while leaving room for the story to continue. except, instead of this continuation being a full yahabe serialization, we just get yosuke in shaman king. yahabe!yosuke and mankin!yosuke could exist on the same timeline, and with how the flowers anime reuses shots from the yahabe manga and ova, that feels like what's supposed to be canon. any deviations from the shaman king canon in yahabe itself can easily be explained away by yahabe being from yosuke's perspective as a non-shaman who doesn't know what the hell is going on. he integrates so cleanly into flowers I didn't even know he was from something else until earlier this year. the same thing applies to death zero, because I fully forgot that was a different thing while writing this.
so flowers has shaman king, and yahabe, and death zero, and it sets up the main plot. and then there's tss.
tss is completely incomprehensible if you haven't done at least 30 chapters of external reading.
or, it's comprehensible, but it's also bad. the reading experience is made so much worse if, for example, you haven't read ultimo and don't know how terrifying not-stan lee actually is. or how important the themes of ultimo are to tss itself. ultimo is a conversation on the objectivity of good and evil, in the same way tss is a battle of ideologies between gods. if you haven't read ultimo, the dong family comes out of absolute nowhere and make even less sense then they do with context.
and then there's senju. the page where senju, when asked what he's learned on his 40 (20 in real actual life) year journey, smiles and says he "can't save people after all" is probably my favourite moment in anything takei's ever written. the weight of that statement means nothing to the reader who's only come from shaman king, because the senju we see in shaman king is sati saigan's spirit ally and nothing else. "I can't save people after all" is an answer to the main thesis of butsu zone, an answer given decades after that manga was cancelled to a collection of readers who might not even know what that is. it's an impactful moment if you've read butsu zone, if you know how it was cut short before takei could take the story where he wanted, if you know the creator has been writing about the same things, about the state of the world and doing what's right and how there are no bad people who can see ghosts, for decades. it makes you think about the thing you're currently reading, the sequel to the one story that author told that made it, that got to say its piece.
because takei's work is kind of cursed. his manga are frequently cancelled, his oneshots never picked up for serialization. the magazines his sequels run in getting cancelled themselves, leaving his stories in limbo. even shaman king, his most successful work, only got its true ending years after it concluded. there is so much in takei's work that has gone unsaid.
when senju stands in front of daremoine and says he can't save people, it's satisfying. it may have been what takei set out to write in 1997, or maybe it was something he thought of in the years between, but either way. this is the ending of butsu zone. this is how its theme's conclude. in the sequel to the sequel of a manga from which its original protagonist was a side character, and underdeveloped plotline. and when you've read butsu zone, it feels good, it feels complete. it hits you like a ton of bricks
this is why I think flowers and super star lose people. because they aren't sequels to shaman king. they're sequels to everything takei has ever written.
to get the most out of super star, you need to have read not only shaman king and its spinoffs, not only flowers, but butsu zone and ultimo and yahabe. hell, to understand shaman king you need to have read mappa douji, or the entire ending falls flat on its face
if you lean into it, this creates an interconnectedness to takei's work, a sense that what you're reading right now is a part of something bigger. whatever is being contemplated currently ties into a much larger conversation about society and morality spanning one man's entire career.
if you don't, you get... a bunch of messy stories. tss makes no bloody sense half the time. ultimo is insane enough on its own, and you're supposed to keep track of that and all the little changes that fit it into this timeline? not to mention the flaws in takei's writing itself, how he tends to pace things weird and leave gaps in his stories, all of it makes tss specifically pretty inaccessible to the average reader.
what is there to take away from this?
I'm not sure, really. I love tss, a lot actually. I enjoy the sense of discovery that comes with engaging in this twisted knot of a story. I think that if you tried to read tss with only shaman king and were frustrated, you should check out yahabe and ultimo and especially butsu zone and try again. you might still think it's a mess, but I think it's worth it to see if that's what lost you
but I know that's also a big ask, that's over 80 chapters of manga to read just to have the backstory for the insane stuff in tss. not everyone's up for that, and that's fair
do I think tss would be more accessible if it only drew from shaman king? yes. do I think it would have been better?
no
#shaman king#shaman king the super star#I have mixed feelings about takei's work and tss especially but I still really love it#I've been trying to condense these thoughts into some kind of video essay so consider this post a first draft#I'll probably think some more on this later

Black Paint
Vessel x Fem!Reader
A/N: After almost a week of more i FINALLY finished this omg. sorry for all the teasing it just turned into way more of a beast to write this than i anticipated lol. Now that this is done though I have more of a horror oriented idea surrounding Vessel the character that I want to work on next. Hope you all enjoy! Word Count: 8.4k (oops) Warnings: none
--------------------------
The bar is busier than normal. You have to push the door rather roughly to not so politely get someone blocking it to move, and when you finally do make it inside, the air is thick with the smell of beer and warm bodies.Â
Great.
You grumble quietly to yourself as you wade through the mass of bodies, laughter and the loud din of conversation assaulting your ears as you approach the bar, a glimmer of hope flickering in your chest when you see your usual seat at the end is open. The bartender, Ryland, spots you immediately smiling at you as he gestures to the seat that is tipped forward onto the bar to signal its reservation.
He reaches forward as you finally reach your destination, tipping the chair back so it lands on all four legs and you slide into the well worn wooden seat. The patron to your left glances at you, eyes flitting from you, to the seat that you occupied, back to Ryland before dropping back to his glass.Â
You smile warmly at the bartender as you pull your scarf from around your neck.Â
âThanks for saving it for me,â you say, talking about the seat. âI hope I didnât put anyone out.âÂ
Ryland shrugs already mixing your drink as his eyes flicking to your neighbor for just a brief moment before they return to you.
âCouldnât leave my best customer without her seat,â he says kindly, his words making you feign an exaggerated wince.Â
âUgh, Ry,â you groan, âyou canât keep calling me your best customerâŚit makes me sound like an alcoholic.â
Ryland laughs as he slides your already finished drink across the waxed wood bar top.Â
âWellâŚâ you chuckle as you take the drink. âMaybe this is sign enough.â
Your friend shakes his head. âYouâre not an alchoholic love, trust me,â he emphasizes. âYou might be one of the most regulars, but having one drink a visit doesnât mean that much. No AA for you yet.â
You raise your glass as you laugh, âCheers to that.â
Ryland opens his mouth to respond but a shout from the end of the bar cuts him off and he rolls his eyes before sending you an apologetic look. âDuty calls, sorry.â
âI get it, go do your job. Iâll be here,â you assure him.
âOh, I know.â
His words make you chuckle again as he rushes off to tend to more customers. Usually you spend most of your nights here at the pub after work talking to Ryland. Itâs usually just you and maybe a handful of other people, also regulars. Tonight is different though, much busier, and you find yourself slightly disappointed you wonât get to chat much with him.Â
You shrug to yourself, reaching down to retrieve the book youâve been reading from your bag. Might as well pass the time somehow, you drove all the way down here - no point in wasting the trip.
However, as you turn in your seat to reach your bag hanging on the back of your seat, you see a set of eyes on you. Your bar neighbor.Â
You ignore it at first, but then remember how heâd looked when Ryland revealed the seat heâd saved had been for you. Without thinking, you grab your book and lean over slightly to be heard over the loud atmosphere of the room.Â
âI hope I didnât take this seat from someone who needed it,â you say quickly, âDid you need it for someone?âÂ
The man shakes his head at your question, swirling the glass in his hand around idly.Â
âYouâre good.âÂ
His words are short, but you immediately take notice of the deep timbre of his voice.
You nod, taking his curt response as âback offâ and move to lean back into your bubble when he speaks again.Â
âYou must be pretty important to have the bartender save your seat though,â he says, lips quirked up slightly. âEspecially if you only ever get one drink.â
You let out a small scoff, waving him off. âNobody important, trust me,â you say. âIâve just been coming here for a while, and between you and me, Iâm a generous tipper - I think thatâs the only reason Ryland puts up with me.â
He smiles at that, closed lips pulling rather upward before he tilts his head back to finish off his drink. âThat will do it,â he tells you before falling silent as he lifts up a hand to signal for another drink.Â
You follow the natural flow of conversation and let it end there as Ryland comes over to take the mans order, you turn back to your book.Â
You get through a few pages of your book, successfully able to tune out the noise around you but unsuccessfully able to turn out the stranger next to you. For whatever reason, you find your eyes flitting over to him more often then they should.Â
Heâs handsome in a mysterious kind of way. You know youâve never seen him in here before, so heâs not a regular. Heâs not here with anyone either, just silently sipping his drink of choice and occasionally flicking through his phone. But otherwise he just seems to beâŚexisting here. Head bobbing to whatever rock music is playing through the speakers eyes glancing around the room.Â
However, the one thing that seems to catch your eye most of all are his hands. Heâs constantly fiddling with his glass, the several silver rings that adorn his fingers, clinking softly against the sides. But what piques your curiosity is the small flecks and smears of black on his knuckles and staining the ridges around his nails.Â
It looks like paint.Â
And before you can stop yourself, you find yourself asking,
âAre you an artist?â
This seems to pull the man from his reverie, eyes turning to meet yours in slight surprise.Â
You gesture to his hands when he doesnât answer. âSorry I just - It looks like paint. on your handsâŚâ
He looks down at his hands, brows raising slightly as he lets go of his glass to absentmindedly pick at the stains. He chuckles as he does, the sound sending a pleasant flutter through your chest.Â
âYou could say that,â he says vaugly.Â
âThatâs cool,â you offer a bit lamely, your mind anxiously reeling for a way to continue.Â
You hold up your book. âIâm more of a consumer myself. You knowâŚinstead of the creator.âÂ
God, what the fuck is wrong with you?
The man shakes his head, âI doubt that,â he says kindly. âMost people I know who read are the most creative out there.â
You shrug, âI guess that makes sense...â You trail off for a moment.Â
He obviously didnât seem comfortable talking about what exactly he does since he avoided your question so you try to dance around it.Â
âHow did you get into yourâŚart?â
The man shrugs, starting to fiddle with his glass again. âI thinkâŚIt started as a way to express myself I suppose. Most art does. Then I just never stopped. I think of it as an escape if that makes sense.â
You nod firmly, once again thumbing through your book.Â
âIt does. I think thatâs why I love reading so muchâŚâ
The conversation continues smoothly after that, the strangers seeming more open to talk as you both ramble on about everything and nothing. He asks you about what book youâre reading and you tell him, surprised to find heâs familiar with the author. You both just ramble on from things as simple as interests to eventually arguing about drinks of choice.Â
Soon enough youâre on your fourth drink - a first for you really - and laughing about some story he had told you about a friend of his.Â
âNo way!â You exclaim through broken laughter, cheeks warm from both the alcohol and the sound of his laughter. âI donât believe it.â
He shakes his head hand placed over his chest, âI swear it.â
âOh my god that isâŚâ your words devolve into more laughter as you take another sip of your drink.Â
Your new friend goes to speak again but cuts himself off as his phone buzzes on the bar top. His smile falls, only slightly, as his eyes scan the screen before he lets out a small sigh, Turing the screen off and tapping the phone against the solid wood beneath it.
âDuty calls,â he says ruefully, moving to stand as he pulls a pen from his pocket and scribbles something onto a dry drink napkin.Â
You sit up straighter now, fighting off the pang of disappointment as he starts to pull his jack on.Â
âWork?âÂ
He shrugs, sending you another one of those half smiles. âSomething like that,â he says before pulling out what is obviously way too much money for his two drinks and tucks it and the napkin beneath his glass.Â
âGet home safe,â he says, before turning to push his way through the mass of bodies.Â
âYou too!â You call after him, hoping he heard you over the din of the room.Â
A low whistle catches your attention from where you watch the him exit the bar, and you turn to see Ryland has joined you once again. His eyes are bright as he looks at the empty place beside you, the cash and napkin in his hand as his eyes scan over it.Â
âWhat?â You ask, leaning forward to get a peek at the note.
Ryland sends you a wicked grin. âSeems like someone made a good impression,â he chuckles, shwoing you the napkin. âYour tab is payed for, love.â
âFor the ladyâs drinks as well. keep the rest.â
The handwriting was surprisingly neat, a mix between print and cursive as it flows across the delicate paper. You glance back up at Ryland as he whistles again.Â
âDamn good tipper too, at that,â he admires. âHope he comes back.â
Itâs then, as your friend is drooling over his tip and you glance back down at the note in you hand that your realize it.Â
You never even learned his name.
¡ ¡ â ¡đĽ¸Âˇ â ¡ ¡
Itâs several types typical days at the bar before you see him again, and to say youâre surprised is an understatement. It had been almost a week since the night you met him, and you had resigned yourself to the fact that youâd probably never see him again.Â
So, when you walk into the much calmer bar tonight, your eyes donât search the room. Instead you make a beeline to your usual seat, waving at Ryland as you do. You hand barely meets the wooden back of the tall chair before a high pitched whistle sounds from behind you, turning several heads in the pub, including yours.Â
You csilently curse the way your heart leaps in your chest as you find the source, a familiar face raises a glass from a booth in the back before waving you over. However, unlike last time, heâs not alone. There are three other guys sitting with him at the table, all eyes on you as you glance from them, back to your usual seat, before falling to Ryland.Â
Your friend, who stands in front of you now gives you a scathing look. âGirl if you sit down in the chair I just might kick you out. Go,â he points to the table before walking off.Â
You canât stop the chuckle that leaves your lips as you listen to him, hand falling from your familiar place in order to walk towards the back table.Â
The stranger from before assess you as you approach, eyes trailing from your face to your feet then back up again, and you canât stop the shiver that runs up your spine at the action.Â
âDidnât think Iâd see you again,â he says, taking a sip of his drink.Â
You give him a confused look. âI did tell you I was a regular here right?â You ask. âI should be the one saying that about you.âÂ
He smiles, âOh I didnât forget,â he assures you. âHow could I forget this placeâs best customer?âÂ
âOi, quit flirting and let the lady sit down!â One of the other guys at the table interrupts, leaning over from his place next to you to push out the last free chair as he looks at your strange companion. âYou havenât even introduced us.â
At the mention of an introduction, the man seems to freeze, as if he too realizes just like you did last time, that you never exchanged names.Â
âWellâŚUh, this is-â
You interject quickly with your name, sticking your hand out to the one who had pulled out the chair for you. He laughs at your formal greeting and playfully swats your hand away as he stands.Â
âWeâre the hugging type Iâm afraid, but-â he pulls you into a quick hug before ushering you into your seat, âItâs nice to meet you. Iâm ivâ
You look at him puzzled for a moment, as you take your seat, spotting closer to the table.Â
âFour like⌠like the number?â You ask, unable to keep the surprise out of your voice.Â
The man laughs, as if he expected that reaction and nods.Â
âYou heard right. Iâm iv,â he gestures to the man to his right, who has shorter white hair, âThis hereâs iii, and that-â he points to the man sitting next to your friend, âis ii. And well, you already know Ves.â
Your slight confusion must show on your face as laughter erupts from the table, the boys nudging one another as they all pause to take sips from their various drinks. The one named iii waves his hand in a dismissive manner, shaking his head.Â
âItâs a bit of anâŚinside joke I guess. Nicknames we gave each other that just kind of stuck,â he explains.
You nod at his explanation, still perplexed but accept it nonetheless. And plus, now you know the name of the mystery man from last visit.Â
Ves.Â
You wonder if that is some sort of nickname too.Â
However, you donât dwell too long on that fact before the conversation last time with Ves comes to the front of your mind. With brows drawn together, you lean over slightly towards Ves, pointing a wandering finger towards the other three guys.Â
âWait, so was one of them the one that went streaking through the park after a night of drinking?â
The grin that splits Vesâ face is all you need to know the answer as a cacophony of groans and loud protests erupt from the table. But itâs not until iii slaps his hands on the table as he leans forward with a betrayed look on his face.Â
âVes, really man? We promised weâd take that shit to the grave! Why are you out here dissing me like that?â
The only response iii gets is a laugh from Ves and soon the other guys follow, elbowing their friend and tossing teases across the table, and before you know it, you join in too.Â
***
The night goes on much like that, more stories of their wild times together coming to light, and they even get you to spill some more embarrassing, albeit funny, memories from your college days. Its through these conversations that you determine the must have been friends for a while, and you smile at the thought of what other antics they could get up too.Â
This time, and idle chatter also reveals something else to you.Â
More black paint.Â
Itâs still apparent on Vesâ hands like last time, although it looked like he tried to do a better job of scrubbing it away. The same couldnât be said be said for the other guys. The dark pigment adorns their skin in small amounts much the same way as it did Vesâ the first time you met him. Itâs mainly prominent on the ridges of their knuckles and fingernails, sometimes on their wrists when you can see the skin form where their shirts or jackets ride up. You even notice a particularly larger smear on the side of iiâs neck when he lens back to laugh particularly hard at some lame joke you said.Â
Itâs probably nothing, they probably all work together, it would make sense. But no matter how many times you try to ignore it, your curiosity wonât let it slide.Â
And ii notices. Probably from when you let your eyes linger on him a bit too long when you noticed the paint.Â
He takes a swing of his beer before gesturing to you with the glass. âAlright, out with it,â he says casually, âI know Iâm attractive but nobody stares at me like that.â
iii reaches across the table and swats at his shoulder. âOi, donât be so full of yourself mate-â
iv joins in on the banter. âYeah, we all know Iâm the best looking-â
Playful banter breaks out at this, the lot of them seeming to forget about the question ii even asked you, and in the break from the spotlight, you eye drift over to Ves.Â
Only to see him already looking at you, a pensive look on his face.Â
Heat rushes to your cheeks and you look away quickly, reaching for your glass to take another drink as your eyes fall to your watch.Â
Holy shit, itâs late.Â
You let out a small huff, quickly downing the last of your drink before setting the glass back on the table with a soft thunk.Â
âI have to head out,â you say, turning to gather your purse before moving to stand.Â
The announcement brings out a chorus of protests and pleas to stay but you shake your head.Â
âI donât know what you all do for work but I have to be up in...â You look exaggeratedly at your watch, âoh five hours, so with that-â you reach into your purse and pull out several larger bills, laying them on the table, âDrinks are on me tonight as a thank you for a lovely evening.â
More protest follow, but you wave them off and before you know it the three guys you met earlier are out of their seats and giving you hugs as if youâve known them for years, murmurs of âsee you aroundâ and âdrive safeâ meeting your ears before they back off.Â
Then, Vesâ is in front of you before you can blink, and itâs only now that you seem to realize just how huge he is. Well, in reality, heâs not the tallest person youâve ever seen but he still towers over you and has aâŚpresses about him you canât seem to place.Â
You look up at him and smile as he holds your coat up in his hands, having retrieved it from the back of your seat before you could. He helps you as you slip your arms through the sleeves, and you turn back to him, smile still tugging at your lips.Â
âThanks.â
Ves nods, shoving his hands in his pockets.Â
âI can walk you to your car,â he offers, nodding to the windows. âItâs dark.â
You shake your head in an automatic response, âYou donât have to do that-â
Vesâ is steering you towards the door before you can finish, âI insist.â
The boys call out their goodbyes as you leave, and Ves just chuckles as you make for the door.Â
âThey liked you,â he says as he pushes open the door, holding it for you until youâre both out in the crisp night air.Â
You laugh, turning right to head towards your car parked just down the street.Â
âI liked them too, theyâre a riot,â you say fondly. âI can see why youâre all friends. They seem like good people.â
Ves smiles softly at this, nodding his agreement. âThey are - basically saved my life a time or two.â
A silence falls over you too then, neither of you sure what to say as you lead him further down the sidewalk, your car now in view. The only sound is the soft thudding of shoes on concrete and your own breathing.Â
Your over active mind races for something to fill the silence, but you reach your destination before you can think of anything, and you try to swallow the disappointment you feel as your night draws to a close.Â
âWell,â you say, pulling out your keys, âthis is me.âÂ
You turn to face Ves, your back to your car as he stops just a few steps from you, closer than would be considered normally appropriate.Â
Not that youâre complaining.Â
He looks down at you again, features obscured by the shadows casted by the street lamps. But he seems to be studying you, that curious tilt to his head making your heart stutter slightly.Â
âIt was nice to see you again,â he says finally, voice gentle in the quiet night.
âIt was nice to see you too,â you say, tugging your bottom lip between your teeth in a moment of contemplation. âI had been looking for you. Before tonight.â You admit.Â
His brows raise at that, slight surprise painting his features.Â
âReally?âÂ
You chuckle, âYeah. I remembered after you left that we never even learned each others names andâŚit was silly. But Iâm glad I got to see you again.â
Ves smiles at your words just a small gust of wind blows though, sending a shiver through you as part of your scarf falls down from around your neck. He reaches up instinctively to adjust the fabric, his knuckles brushing the underside of your jaw as he tugs it back into place.Â
âWell,â he breathes, âMaybe weâll see each other again.â
Youâre looking up at him again, closer than ever and you can barely muster the weak âyeahâ that falls from your lips, before his hand drops back to his side.Â
âHave a good night, love.âÂ
And then heâs walking back towards the pub.Â
Your mind is racing again, and like a total dumbass you blurt the first thing that comes to your mind.Â
âBaby oil!â You call out, stopping the tall man in his tracks as he turns to send you a very confused look.Â
âFor the paint,â you clarify, gesturing to your own hands. âBaby oil gets paint off pretty good. Better than soap and water.â
Ves smiles, and just nods turning back to continue his journey.
But even from this far away, the silent night allows you to hear that deep laughter slip from his lips.Â
¡ ¡ â ¡đĽ¸Âˇ â ¡ ¡
Today was one of the bad days.
Everyone has them, you know they do, today is just your turn, you suppose. You donât have many of them, or at least - you donât go to the pub when you do. But even Ryland notices your dour mood, noticing right away when you by pass your usual seat without so much as a wave in favor of picking the tiny booth at the very back of the establishment.Â
He only offers a small pat on the shoulder as he drops off your usual drink, muttering a quiet offering of solidarity before walking back off.
It feels stupid. To be this upset when nothing even really happened. Your car didnât break down, you didnât have a partner dump you, you didnât get laid off, itâs just-
The tears seem to come without warning. Burning at the back of your eyes, lower lip wobbling in an attempt to stop the onslaught of tears and the sob clawing at your chest.Â
Get it together!! You scream at yourself, frustration further fueling the tears.Â
Life just sucks sometimes for no particular reason it seems.Â
Work is overwhelming, your hobbies arenât interesting, your house too quiet it seemed to scream at you instead of comfort you.Â
You take a sip of your drink, wiping furiously at the tears that escape as you do so.Â
Youâre thankful you chose the booth seat facing away from everyone. How embarrassing to be a caught in a pub crying over -
âFancy seeing you here.â
The all to familiar voice shocks you from your own mind and you jump in your seat, making the mistake of looking over your shoulder to see none other than Ves.Â
âOh my god,â you mutter wiping hastily at your cheeks as you watch his lips turn downwards in concern.Â
âWhatâs wrong?â He asks, coming closer despite your inner desire for him to leave.Â
You shake your head, wiping your nose for good measure as you stare down into your drink.Â
âNothing,â you say, voice clogged with emotion. âDonât worry about it.â
You take a deep breath, trying to steady yourself when you realize heâs sliding in the booth across form you. Plastering on a watery smile you clutch your glass between your hands as you look at him.Â
âI didnât expect to see you here,â you try to say casually, but fail miserably.Â
Ves just shakes his head, eyes soft as he rests his clasped hands on the table before him.Â
âYou donât have to do that,â he tells you, ânot with me.â
âDo what?â You say, lip trembling again as your tears bubble up once more.Â
âPretend youâre okay, when youâre not.â
The laugh you let out is a bitter thing, small and broken by the tears that drip from your eyes that you wipe away again and again.Â
Ves doesnât say anything as you try to compose yourself again, but you find yourself unable to, and he eventually stops you from fruitlessly wiping away tears by reaching up to take one of them in his own.Â
âWhatâs wrong?â He asks again, somehow even gentler than before.Â
All you can do is shrug, tears salty against your tongue as you lick your lips.Â
âNothing, really,â you say again, continuing when he looks like heâs going to argue.Â
âIâm justâŚsad. Donât know why.â
Ves nods understandingly, thumb swiping comfortingly over your knuckles. He doesnât say anything. Maybe because he doesnât know what to say or maybe because he knows it wonât really matter. Either way you appreciate his presence - itâs nice to know someone is here, even if no words are shared.Â
After a few quiet moments, he grabs a drink napkin with his free hand, offering it to you.Â
You take it, fingers brushing his own and notice something that takes your mind off of your own turmoil.Â
âThe paintâs gone,â you say softly, turning his hand over to inspect it.Â
You glance up only to see Vesâ lips twitch upwards ever so slightly.Â
âBaby oil,â he says, âwho knew?â
His words make you let out a soft chuckle, and he joins in, his hand never leaving yours.Â
And suddenly, youâre not so sad anymore.Â
¡ ¡ â ¡đĽ¸Âˇ â ¡ ¡
Laughter bubbles up from your chest as you and the boys spill out of the bar into the cold night air. Your breaths materializing in front of you in puffs of white steam. iii is hanging of off ivâs shoulder, doubled over in laughter at something that someone said - you canât even keep track of the conversation anymore, laughter cutting most of it off anyways.Â
However, after a few more long moments of racouys laughter, iii perks up brows raised slightly as he looks to you.Â
âHoly shit I almost forgot,â he says, letting got go iv to address you now. âYouâre coming tomorrow night right?â
You send him a quizzical look before looking over to Ves where he stands next to you, only to see him waving his hand in front of his throat in a âcut it outâ motion, stopping abruptly when you catch him.Â
âGo where?â You ask, curiosity piqued.Â
You watch as ii rolls his eye, âCome on Ves,â he groans. âWe already decided to extend the invitation.â
You hear Ves let out a huff, running a hand through his hair as you speak up again, confusion turning into annoyance.Â
âWhat are you guys talking about?â You ask, exasperation lacing your words.Â
Itâs iv who speaks up this time, wrapping an arm around iii.
âThereâs a concert tomorrow,â he says grinning. âWe have an extra ticket and wanted you to come.â
âA concert?â You ask, turning to Ves only to see an almost imperceptible blush tinging his cheeks. âWhy are you so worked up about a concert?â
Ves huffs again, shaking his head as he digs around the inside of his jacket for something. âIâm not worked up,â he grumbles, finally finding what he was searching for and pulling it out. âI just-â
II interrupts Ves with a clap on the shoulder and a shit eating grin on his face. âHeâs just mad because he wanted to be the one to ask you.â
Ves shrugs his hand off his shoulder and lands a playful punch to his friends arm, mumbling something about being a prick and heâd pay for that later, before he turns to you, offering you what you realize now is a small badge attached to a lanyard.Â
âHere,â he says, softer than when he addressed iv. âItâs VIP, just show up an hour before show time and theyâll tell you where to go.â
You take it from him, the black lanyard soft beneath your fingers as you examine the item. The badge is sturdier than you expected, seeming to be made of metal instead of plastic. itâs all black with a red symbol youâve never seen before printed on both sides the name of the band printed just beneath it with the words âVIP PASSâ below that. The lanyard itself is black with white lettering echoing the same as the badge.Â
Sleep Token.
Huh. Youâve never heard of them before, but that doesnât surprise you as you havenât been a huge music buff most of your life. Then, as if Vesâ words finally register with you, you look up at him again, brows pinched in confusion once more.Â
âWait. Theyâll show me where to go - are you guys not coming with me?â You ask, âBecause this ticket it wasted on me if you guys donât come, I donât even know the band-â
âOh weâll be there,â iii laughs from his place next to iv.
The boys all laugh at his words, leaving you feeling utterly left out of some inside joke they have. But before you can get to worked up about it, a warm hand reaches out to take your own that holds the pass.Â
âDonât worry about them,â Ves says, rolling his eyes. âGive me your phone.â
You comply without really thinking about it, watching as the much taller man takes it from you and types something into it before handing it back.Â
âThere. I put in my number, just text me when you get there tomorrow and weâll find each other.â
You nod, stomach fluttering as your fingers brush his when you take your phone back and pocket it.Â
âSounds good.â
ii claps his hands together, seemingly satisfied with tonights events. âAlight, now thatâs settled we probably need to get going. Big day tomorrow boys!â
The rest of the group whoops in agreement, grouping together as they head down the sidewalk, only Ves lingering behind at your side. Only when he gestures towards your car down the street do you realize he wants to walk you there.Â
âOh, right,â you say, chuckling softly as warmth rushes to your cheeks.Â
Youâve been getting unusually flustered around him lately, unable to control the fluttering in your chest when heâs around.Â
Itâs silent for a moment before you break it, gesturing with the pass to the guys ahead.Â
âThis must be some band for them to be this excited about it.â
Ves laughs at that, an actual laugh deep from his chest instead of the usual soft chuckles he gives you.Â
âYeah, theyâŚYou could say itâs a huge part of our lives,â he says.
You hum softly, looking back down at the pass.Â
âWell then, Iâm sure Iâll like them if you all enjoy them this much. Ill try to listen to some of their songs on the way home-â
âNo!â Ves interjects, voice loud on the quiet street as you both come to a stop in front of your car.
He clears his throat when you give him a withering look, caught off guard by his outburst.Â
âI justâŚâ he begins, âtheyâre best live,â he tells you, rubbing the back of his neck. âPromise you wonât listen to them before the concert tomorrow.â
His eyes seem to be pleading with you, and you canât find it in you to deny him despite your curiosity.Â
âOkayâŚIâll wait until tomorrow.â
Ves sighs, relief evident in the way his shoulders drop ever so slightly, and before you can even blink his face is right next to your own, warm lips pressing quickly to your cheek before heâs back out of your space, grinning like a fool.
âGood. See you tomorrow night.â
And all you can do is stare, stunned silly, as he jogs to catch up with his friends.Â
You only realize when you pull into your driveway that you never got the location of the concert, or the start time at the same exact moment your phone pings with a message. Itâs from an unknown number but lists an address and a time, followed quickly by a second less cryptic message.Â
Hope you got home safe. See you tomorrow.
-V
* * * *
Even though you get to the concert venue an hour early like Ves told you too, itâs already packed. You almost donât find parking until you get lucky with a street spot a few blocks over. When you finally make it to the entrance the line is down the block and seems to keep going. You look around for a line labelled for VIP, anything to tell you where to go, but all you see is the sign pointing to the long line for general admission.Â
You pull your phone from your pocket, pulling up Vesâ number to shoot him a quick text.Â
âHey! Iâm here but I donât see a sign for VIPâŚwhere are you guys?â
You wait less than a minute before a response comes through.
âV: Weâre running way later than expected. Find an attendant, they should be able to point you in the right direction.â
You huff at the message anxiety gnawing at your mind as you bit your lip. Late? You donât know anything about this band or this venue, you donât really want to go in without them-
âMiss?âÂ
A voice behind you makes you jump, turning to see a younger looking man with tattoos put his hands up in mock surrender as he chuckles. Heâs wearing a t-shirt with the same logo as your lanyard.
âSorry, didnât mean to frighten you,â he says kindly, gesturing to your lanyard. âYouâve got a VIP pass. I can get you to where you need to go.â
âOh,â you say, looking down to the pass hanging around your neck. âYeah I was just texting my friend about where to go I donâtâŚâ you hesitate for a moment. âIâve never been to one of these before.â
The man smiles, holding a hand out as he gestures for you to follow him towards a side entrance to the venue.Â
âThatâs alright. In your defense we donât have the best signage for VIPâs,â he chuckles. âWe donât get many of them.â
Surprise tugs at your chest at his words.
âYou donât?â You ask, âMy friends are supposed to meet me here, will they know where to go?â
The man chuckles at this, eyes glimmering with mischief as he looks over to you before opening the door to head inside.
âI think theyâll be fine.â
You follow him inside the venue and marvel at the gargantuan space as he shows you around. The stage is set up, lights on but not moving and the bands logo projected onto the back wall of the stage. The venue looks big enough to hold thousands of people. The floor closest to the stage is void of seats, allowing for people to stand up close to the stage while stadium like seats art up about half way back and up all around the room.Â
âSo this is it,â He says as he brings you up to the side of the front of the stage on the floor, right next to the barricade in a small roped off section separating you from the rest of the open floor seating. âTheyâre going to be letting GA in here in a few minutes and concert starts soon after that,â he extends his hand to you. âMy nameâs Sam by the way, if you need anything donât hesitate to ask someone.â
You smile, your nerves from earlier dissipating slightly at the thought of knowing someone here as you take his hand.
âThanks, Sam.â
He smiles back, before his phone buzzes in his hand. He looks down at it before waving it in the air slightly.Â
âDuty calls. Enjoy the concert!â
And then heâs gone, leaving you alone in the big empty room waiting for your friends.
* * *
âVes, where are you guys???â
Your text has gone unread for several minutes, but your nerves are at an all time high as the room around you continues to fill with excited concert goers. The doors had opened half an hour ago and the room was already packed to the brim, people who had floor seats rushing in to be the first at the barricades as the start time drew closer.Â
You send another hurried text, looking around you in hopes that Ves and the guys would show up any second.Â
âThe concert is about to start!â
For a brief moment, dread settles in the pit of your stomach. What if this is some cruel joke being played on you. What if they bailed last minute and decided not to come, leaving you here by yourself. An ache settles in your chest as the fleeting memory of lips agasint your chilled cheek flashes before your eyes and you go to send another text.Â
âVesâŚplease tell me you guys are coming.â
As if on command, the room around you goes pitch black, the crowed around you erupting into a deafening roar as the stage lights slowly come to life with the sounds of harsh guitar strings flooding through the speakers.Â
You phone lights up with a text message.Â
âV: Weâre right hereâ
The crowds roar around you continues to crescendo as the music flows from the speakers, the blue lights on the stage illuminating a sole figure emerging in the center of the stage to greet the adoring crowd as the drums behind him explode in a rhythmic beat.Â
You donât have time to try to direct Vesâs message, your attention draw and held captive by the presence now on stage.Â
They approach the front of the stage, just mere yards from you where a microphone stand sits, and youâre immediatly observing the sight in front of you. Itâs a man, that youâre now sure of. He moves to the beat, the black cloak he wears billowing out behind him. Heâs not wearing a shirt but any skin that would be showing is covered in black paint - from the portion of his face not hidden by a hood and face mask to his chest and right down to the fingers now wrapping around the microphone. Â
The mask is obviously the most striking thing. White with a red symbol of the band painted on the front, missing the lower half to leave his mouth free to sing.Â
Which he does.Â
The vocalist starts to sing into the microphone, a song unfamiliar to you, but no less enchanting as a streak of familiarity zings though you. His voice sounds familiar in a far off distant way - and for a moment you wonder if you have heard this band before somewhere.Â
Without really thinking, you find yourself swaying to the beat, foot tapping against the ground as the bas reverberates through the room. Your eyes flit from the lead singer to another figure you see drifting across the stage, guitar slung over his shoulders as he plays.Â
Heâs also masked, visible skin inked in black and the suit jacket he wears having a hood pulled up over his head.Â
In fact, all the members of the band wear masks with any visible skin painted black. From the drummer to the back up singers to the other bass guitarist now waltzing along the stage towards the section your standing in. You notice as he getâs closer that heâs the only one not wearing a hood, his ash white hair flipping this way and that as he moves to the beat.Â
As if sensing your specific gaze on him, the bass player looks up from his guitar strings to where you stand, and sends you a playful wink before turning back the way he came, all but swaggering off.Â
It all seems to click into place in an instant, your eyes going wide as they flick from the shock of white hair back up to the lead singer, whoâs now pulled the microphone from the stand and walking to your side of the stage, never missing a single word of the song.Â
He stops right in front of where you stand, an the crowd behind you goes wild as he reaches out towards them, before bringing just slightly to look directly at you, sending you an almost imperceptible smile before heâs up and back the way he came.Â
You canât stop the laughter that erupts from your lips as realization sets in, you finally push past your confusion to join the crowd in jumping and clapping and trying your best to sing along to songs youâve never heard before.Â
It feels like you blink and the entire time passes by going from upbeat high energy songs to slower more emotionally charged ones. You find yourself completely drawn into the whole experience, especially on the soft songs, and you can tell that parts of himself were poured into them when they were written.
In no time the concert is drawing to a closer the last notes of the set flowing through the speakers as the crowd erupts into more deafening screams and cheering as Vesâ bows thankfully to the arena. You just barely manage to catch it as he looks over to you, turning and placing his hands together in a âthank youâ motion before you feel a gentle hand on your elbow. You turn to find Sam, the one who lead you in earlier, gesturing off to the side of the stage.Â
âCome with me!â He calls, struggling to be heard over the crowd.Â
You nod, casting one last glance over your shoulder before youâre lead out of the main arena to the backstage area.Â
âSo, what did you think?â Sam asks, genuine curiosity lacing his words.Â
You smile wide, adrenaline still coursing through you from the excitement.Â
âIt was amazing! Iâm just sad I didnât know the songsâŚâ
Sam let out a small laugh, âWell, Iâm sure youâll have plenty of time to learn them all someday,â he says before coming to a stop in front of a door towards the back of the backstage area. âYou can wait in here. Vessel and the others should be by shortly.â
VesselâŚ
You donât have time to dwell on the name reveal as Sam opens the door and ushers you inside and barely has time to close it behind you before a round of raucous laughter and cheers assault you as three of your four friends all but jump you as you enter.Â
You laugh and hug them all, noticing that their masks are now gone, replaced with the familiar faces you recognize, just streaked with black paint.Â
âI canât believe you guys!â You exclaim once the noise dies down a little bit. âWhy didnât you just tell me you were in a band?â
iii waves a dismissive hand at you, moving to plop back into the couch in the center of the room. âWhereâs the fun in that?â He teases, taking a water bottle that iv hand him.Â
âYeah,â iv agrees, taking a seat by iii, âitâs all part of the fun, love.â
You roll your eyes, turning youthful attention to ii who has yet to say anything from his place propped agains the edge of the couch. When he notices your eyes on him, he throws his hands up in surrender.Â
âDonât look at me, I was the one who wanted to tell you. These blokes,â his eyes shift to look at something behind you, âand him - outvoted me.â
You turn to face the object of iiâs attention, only to be met with a familiar towering form, the white and red mask still in place. Now that youâre able to see him up close, you canât help the way your eyes roam. He truly is imposing like this - not in a bad way - but he seems to take on a different persona adorned in the costume. You take note of the paint still on his skin, but noticeably patchier from where it rubbed off or has dripped away due to the thin sheen of perspiration coming through. And from this close, youâre able to fully see the mask he wears, the intricate details and the way the eye holes are formed to create the illusion of there being 3 sets of eyes instead of just two.Â
Thereâs so many thoughts running through your head, yet the only thing that youâre brain manages to verbalize is a very simple, and quiet -Â
âHi.â
Ves chuckles at this, the sound low and deep as it reverberates through his chest.
âHi,â he mimics before casting a glance behind you.Â
He must have silently communicated with the other guys because you soon hear rustling behind you as the al stand and start to move towards you, and thus the exit. They all murmur quick goodbyes to you, telling you and Ves to come find them later and you al can go out for drinks again, until eventually itâs just you and Ves alone in the room.
Neither of you have moved and you can feel a certain tension in the air that either of you have left to break. Until you finally work up the courage to speak.Â
âSoâŚVessel?âÂ
The word comes out as a question, and you watch silently as he lets out a small huff, lips quirking upward in a small smile.Â
âI figured âVesâ was a more socially acceptable way of introducing myself,â he jokes, reaching up to tap the mask. âDespite what you might think, I donât try to scare people away.â
He pauses for a moment, hands clenching at his sides slightly before he speaks again.
âSoâŚwhat do you think?â
You canât help but perk up at his question, flashes of the concert coming back to you immediately as you practically bounce on your toes.Â
âWhat do I think?â You repeat, exasperated. âVes, that was amazing! I might not have known the songs that well but it was phenomenalâŚâ
Your words come out faster than you can really control, rambling on about everything you loved about the concert and their music. Youâre so caught up in recalling the recent events that you fail to notice as Ves moves ever closer to you, eliminating the space between you both.
âAnd then when you were on the piano and singing that song I could just tell that you poured your heart into it and it reminded me of that night at the bar when I was upset and you -â
Your words are cut off before you can continue, large calloused hands cradling your cheeks as warm lips capture your own in a kiss that takes your breath away. You barely even notice the way the mask he wears presses into your cheek until one of his hands leave your skin in order to pry the offending article up and off his head, lips breaking from yours only momentarily before kissing you once more.Â
You hands fall to his sides instinctively, skin warm beneath your palms as your try to pull him closer. He obliges your request by moving to wrap an arm around your waist, holding you too him until he eventually breaks the kiss, resting his forehead against your own as you both struggle for breath.Â
âYou are truly amazing,â he says softly, brushing a stray piece of hair from your face.Â
You pull away from him then, just enough to look up and capture his gaze with your own, heat flooding your cheeks.Â
âYouâre one to talk,â you jest lightly, reaching up to wipe at the pain smudged on his cheeks.Â
âNever in a million years would I have guessed you literally cover yourself in paint. I thought you were a painter!â You exclaim.
Vessel laughs at that, eyes crinkling at the corners as he does so.Â
âWell, I guess technically I am a painter-â
âNot what I meant,â you argue, reaching up to wipe at something tickling your cheek.Â
Vessel reaches up and grabs your hand before you can wipe your cheek again, eyes widened slightly.Â
âStop, youâve got paintâŚâÂ
You glance at your hand in his, only to see black paint smeared over your palms from where youâd touched him earlier.Â
âHere,â he says, reaching up to wipe at the smudge you assume is now on your face.
However, his nose scrunches up as he does so. âOhâŚâ he tries to wipe it again. âI - Iâm just not helping at all really-â
You dissolve into a fit of giggles as you imagine him just smearing more paint around in an effort to clean it up, and he soon joins in before reaching grabbing the corner of his cloak to use instead.Â
He takes your chin between his fingers, tilting your head to one side as he used the piece of fabric to delicately wipe away the traces of paint. His eyes trial over your features as he works, taking you in until he eventually drops the fabric back to his side in favor of cradling your face in his hands once more.Â
âI really want to kiss you again,â he whispers, eyes shimmering with mischief.
You smile.
âThen what are you waiting for?â
And then his lips are on yours, and you couldnât be happier for that busy night at the bar all those weeks ago.Â

Im not a fan of every argument made here on either side, so first I'll get a few things out of the way;
1, that abuse victims often go on to be abusers themselves if they don't put in the work necessary to heal from their own abuse, that's what people are talking about when they refer to the CYCLE of abuse. To deny that is... Also uncomfortable. Being a victim of abuse does not make you exempt from abusing other people. 2, I wish we'd stop equating toxic with abusive because there is a difference. 3, i don't think autistic coding is really a fair defense of said toxic traits I'm gonna be real. There's nothing wrong with headcanons and projection but just to focus on what actually happened in the series without using headcanon to excuse harmful behavior. I don't know what traits are being referred to as "autistic coded" here so honestly I'm not gonna touch that with a ten foot pole and just focus on what we see;
Its hard for people to accept, but abuse does not happen on accident. Abuse is an intentional choice one makes. And over all, no, Ford isn't abusive. He, throughout the series and due to a combination of his self-centeredness and being a victim of abuse (hell, his self-centeredness was weaponized against him as part of the abuse) was absolutely toxic for most of the time we've seen him.
The argument that he abused Fiddleford is so stupid I'm not even going to acknowledge it. The thing with Stan is, he frankly wasn't around him enough to actually abuse him. A one time event is not abuse. A single fight is not abuse. Abuse is long and drawn out and, as I said earlier, intentional. And, like what was already pointed out, Ford was in a bad state. He'd reached the point of Bill going fully mask off, so to speak, and the abuse now being at it's worst. He was fully isolated and sleep deprived and it made him crazy. Yes, his unwillingness to destroy the journals was deeply selfish and another mark of how self-centered he is. It's the definition of irrational. But, once again, he wasn't in a spot where he could think rationally. (Granted, even if he was, I still don't think he would've been willing to destroy the journals because his self importance and self centeredness is one of his biggest flaws and an important part of his character)
The closest Ford ever comes to being abusive is, yes, with dipper. He starts telling him a lot of the same things we know Bill told him at the start of their partnership; you're special, we need each other, these other people are only holding you back. Nobody understands you like I do. When Dipper expresses concern for Mabel, Ford is immediately dismissive. He looks at Dipper and all he sees is himself, and all he sees in Mabel is Stan. He is the one who pushed that dichotomy, because he really couldn't think outside of himself.
His greatest flaw is that he's self centered and self obsessed. But the thing is, is that he learns his lesson. It takes literal apocalypse to get there, but he does learn and he does reflect and he does apologize and try to do better. He course corrects. Gravity falls, ultimately, is about family bonds and breaking the cycle of abuse. Ford almost continued that cycle with Dipper, but he stopped before any permanent damage could be done, both to their relationship, and to Dipper and Mabels. He fixed his relationship with Stan.
He did in fact have abusive tendencies and toxic traits but ultimately he put in the work to fix them and be better. Ford is a well written and well balanced character. He displays how someone even with good intentions can unintentionally fall back into cruel and toxic habits, and can start repeating the abuse they were put through. He also shows that you can come back from that. That starting down that path doesn't mean you have to stay there. That it's possible to heal and get better.
None of what I'm saying is an indictment of Ford's character. The opposite: he is complex and well written and imperfect, and I love him and his character arc. He could've been so easily made into an irredeemable villain, a no good bastard who's just horrible and abusive. He had all those pieces laid out. But the choice and skill to actually have him go through the motions of falling into abusive tendencies and then getting better is amazing on Alex Hirsch's part, and a testament to his ability to write deep and complex characters.
(also this is just kind of my own aside but the use of "autistic-coded" as like an excuse for how a character acts is really annoying to me for a number of reasons? For one, just off the bat, it's an attempt to make your headcanon sound more canon than it is, but by nature of being a headcanon, it's not really a fair or valid argument here. Second, there are ways to make a legitimate argument and analysis of a characters actions in canon and debate criticisms of their actions without saying "they're autism coded so actually you must hate autistic people", like it's okay, you're allowed to make a legitimate argument. Also, "character did shitty thing because they're autistic" isn't the win you think it is, because let's be real, you're either implying that they have no autonomy over their actions because of their autism, or that you think autism makes people shitty or toxic, neither of which is the win you think it is. Ironically lack of media literacy applies in both cases here, just for different reasons. Okay side rant over, just wanted to throw that out there because holy hell it's something that is used so much in fandom and it gets grating after a while.)
The tldr here is that Ford isn't an abuser. He was abused, he had toxic and abusive traits, but he put in the work to heal and better himself. He's by no means perfect and that's okay, he's a good character, and he's actually trying to be better.
Today in "I hate autistic-coded abuse victims", this shitty take.
Ford did not abuse Stan. He did not abuse Fiddleford. He did not try to drive a wedge in Dipper and Mabel's relationship (he was doing what he thought was best for Dipper and thought Mabel would be fine).
Just admit you hate autistic people and have no compassion for abuse victims. And admit you have no media literacy.
Also, calling a canonical abuse victim an abuser is...uncomfortable, to say the least. Especially with how you're just making him out to be abusive for...not handling personal interactions perfectly. You're demonizing autistic traits. And you need to research how abuse can effect people.
(Also, I know Ford's not perfect. But you don't seem to know that he's flawed but ultimately a good person. You just want a "perfect victim" when it comes to abuse victims, and it's obvious)

My relationship with the Ace Attorney 3D models is weird, and I cannot decide if Iâm on the âthe 3D models are FINEâ side or the âBRING MY 2D BOYS BACKâ side
Because I like the different things they were able to do with the 3D models. They could make animations more fluid, and make the characters more expressive (ex. Athena. Sheâs WAY more expressive than any of the other characters, and all her reactions wouldâve been very difficult to animate in 2D. It could ofc be done, but it would likely cost more money and take more time). Additionally, I think a LOT of the stuff they did in AA6 like the dances and the seances would not have been possible if the games werenât already being translated to 3D. In short, the 3D models gave the team the ability to do more fun stuff with the characters in my opinion.
However, some of the characters who were part of the series pre-3D modelling did NOT translate well. Miles and Klavier are usually the examples I complain about irl, like THEY MASSACRED MY BOYS. Klavier looks like his face wasnât quite rendered correctly and his hair couldâve been nicer-looking in 3D, and Miles just. Doesnât.
However, other characters DID translate well. Like I think Phoenix looks great in 3D, and I love the ability to dress him up like heâs my little doll. I also think Apollo looks fine (pun unintended). I mean, his surprised sprite definitely looks better in 2D đ but considering what they were working with I believe it looks okay. Maya and Pearl also look great.
I guess I want some of the older charactersâ sprites to get looked over and changed, but overall I think I like the 3D models more than the 2D models. I find it weird to say that since Iâm usually a huge â2D IS BETTER HOW DARE YOU LIKE 3D BETTERâ person, but the cutscenes in AA5 and 6 made me feel better about the change. The 2D artists still have a place in the making of the series, so personally Iâm chill about that aspect.

still haven't moved on from zane in this episode (aka I hit tag limit again and am unhappy about it)
#alek insanity#not gonna main tag this but prepare for a tiny rant#home is actually really good zane characterization and its super cool to me how it holds up to this day#s1 characterization is very specific to me because the behaviors displayed by the ninja there (mostly) isnt bc thats how they really are but#its due to societal pressure. cole originally being more 'stone faced tough guy' -> 'down to earth' -> 'really sensible easy to talk to guy'#is because hes always been a sensitive guy... but he felt he couldnt express that true version of himself. thats the whole thing behind his#true potential. jay going from s1 -> s6 -> now is less of societal pressure and more teenager figuring himself out but it still applies. ish#seeing how much the ninja have changed or grown from then to now is amazing because back then they all wore masks. they didnt know each#other all that well. but theyve gained that comfortability with each other and also have grown and matured as people#some seasons / eps characterization for certain people im not a fan of (lloyds random misogyny arc in s13) but i mean the overall trend here#and then there is zane. zane in home was pretty dead on to how he behaves now (at least... when it comes to his faults?) and i dont want to#say people skim over that but i am the sf proclaimed n1 s1e2 fan and overthink every scene. zane's early characterization is some of my fav#for him period. he also goes through a ton of traumatic stuff and a ton of bad writing bouts but why he acts so 'weird' or 'distant' has#always been a thread sewn in. he changed so much he stayed the same in a way... if that makes sense. -> ohhh the ninja get mail and he#doesnt? oh he has no family? he quite literally walks away from that situation. oh the ninja are yelling in his face and asking whats wrong#with him? he literally walks away from that situation. he says its to follow the falcon but seeing how he apologized to them by not only#baking a ton of pies (cough... the food fight is what led to him leaving at first) but he also found them a whole entire new house.#zane is unable to truly value what he does for others. insert him in s11 saying he 'tried' to fufill his goal of protecting others.#everything he has ever done still isnt good enough. then the ninja tried to apologize and he didnt really... let them.#that one post about characters putting on facades and that facade being how people really see them. even in fandom. thats zane to me#the guy who lies about being upset and avoids his problems ran away after being yelled at? and he said he wasnt really mad? that is a lie!!#him being a ~360 when it comes to his character development is neat to me because he never hid behind a mask in the same way the others did#cole wanting to seem tough vs being really soft? kai wanting approval so bad he starts being selfish? kai isnt selfish usually!#he is self centered but that is a whole different thing. just wanting to fit in and breaking free of that. zane's true potential came in the#form of 'i finally know why i am not normal' instead of 'i will be my true self'. zane never pretended to not be weird#(instert book) states he literally didnt know why people got mad at him. he just existed and it was 'wrong'. the mask he hid behind was#avoidance. he was pretty open about how he actually was (most of the time). when he was upset he would audibly sigh and walk away lol#but for him saying he wasnt upset / saddened by the ninja... it felt like a moment of selflessness. if that makes sense. he blamed himself#for the monestary burning down. so he didnt deserve the apologies (ish) in the virtues of spinjitzu zane is shown as the generous one iirc#he puts the needs of others over his own. he will bear whatever burden he needs if others are happy. at that same time he doesnt allow

*Busts down the door* NOBODY EXPECTS THE SPANISH INQUISITION!
Ha, sorry! I just saw this post and felt compelled to add my own two cents since Macaqueâs characterization and reception by fandom is something I feel pretty strongly about. Also bear in mind I mean none of this hatefully, Iâm just participating in a debate.
While again, you're correct and valid in a lot of your points, I just can't agree with the statement that Macaque is just a bad person.
Thatâs great! Because Time didnât say Macaque was âjustâ a bad person. They actually acknowledge several times that heâs complex and multi-faceted. But being complex doesnât mean you canât also be an asshole to almost every other person you interact with. He repeatedly hurts several characters, and in the first two seasons he does so with zero provocation other than his hatred for Sun Wukong. Heâs complex, yes, but still a dick.
I get what you're saying, but season 3 is entirely about dissecting the characters (namely Wukong and Macaque) while they're at their most vulnerable. And while this show isn't really known for consistent writing at times, the season is also spent getting to know Macaque and what his true intentions are.
I get what youâre saying here, but thatâs⌠debatable? Monkie Kid has 11 minute episodes, and a lot of them are crammed with details that arenât expanded on. Wukong is consistently benched every season and special, even if itâs done differently each time. He literally spends half of s3 meditating, and in the special heâs possessed. We donât really see him at his âmost vulnerableâ unless you count him being yelled at by Mei and then possessed by LBD, and even then thatâs not really emotional vulnerability â which I assume is what youâre referring to.
Similarly, Macaque isnât really emotionally vulnerable either. Heâs tossed around by LBD, and sure, heâs âvulnerableâ, but he spends all those scenes being terrified or snarky. We donât really see inside his head at all. Andâ what âtrue intentionsâ? Heâs literally hunting down the Monkie Kids to deliver them to LBD because sheâs threatening him into compliance. Those arenât true intentions, thatâs just forced compliance.
M.K literally goes "deep, deep down, you're not [a bad] guy", and Macaque takes that as his incentive to join the group and help them save the world, which he continues to do for the next two seasons.
Uh, yeah⌠so, I did not like that speech at all and I think it was done very poorly and was unwarranted, but that is only my opinion. However, Macaque didnât really help in s4. He just showed MK a video game to motivate him into fighting Azure and nominally helps Mei beat Peng. Not a lot happens, and heâs certainly not remorseful or apologetic towards anyone for howâs heâs treated them in the past. Itâs just kinda brushed over. In s5 heâs a LOT more helpful of his own will though, Iâll give you that.
He also only was present for 1 episode in season 1, and I think 2 in season 2, so it surely wasn't "two full seasons". These seasons we don't know almost anything about him. We're supposed to take his actions purely at face value up until Season 3, where it's all spent letting us know that he does all of it because he was terribly hurt and betrayed (at least to him) by his closest and only friend (regardless of the nuances of that situation as well) and feels now more than ever that he can only rely on himself (something he also literally says). It's why he tries to save himself over the world (along with his well-hidden but clearly there) hope and belief that MK and his friends were capable enough to handle the rest in Season 3.
Okay, you may be right that we didnât see a lot of Macaque in the first two seasons⌠but what we did see from him was not good AT ALL. Sure, he may have only had two episodes, but he spent those episodes being a dick and torturing MK and his friends for funsies. You canât just say âoh, we havenât seen their full character yet!â Just because he only had two episodes in the first two seasons. Even if he had little screen time, he spent all of it being a manipulative asshole.
And as for s3 â again, even if heâs traumatized and has hope for the Mobile Kids, heâs acting on it in the most dickish way possible. He didnât HAVE to separate the van into two copies and torture Mei and Sandy, but he did. He couldâve just isolated MK, taken him to LBD, and finished the job. He chose to keep Mei and Sandy around to get to MK.
Him "having fun while doing it" is, again, why we're meant to take his actions at face value. He acts like he doesn't care how he makes people feel, acts like he just hurts people for the fun of it, when there are clear reasons (justifiable or not) why he does those things.
⌠This is just headcanon territory. Iâm sorry, but the only time Macaque shows a SMIDGEN of regret for what heâs doing is in s3 ep10 when he is actively being consumed by LBDâs curse, and even then he sounds more in pain than anything.
This is shown all throughout season three. He didnât have to torture the Monkie Kids, level Ao Guangâs palace, hold Mei hostage, beat the shit out of Tang and degrade him, or choose to mock MK when he couldâve just gotten the job done with. He CHOSE to do those things, and he smiled the whole time. If you interpret him as remorseful thatâs totally fine, but that is a headcanon. If he was genuinely sorry, he would have said something or showed even ONE SECOND of remorse on his face when he was alone.
His debut episode, he only does anything he does to get back at Wukong because he's upset for a valid reason. Was it okay for him to hurt MK the way he did? Of course not. But he didn't do it just because he's evil and likes hurting people, he did it because he hides away his good nature to keep people away and avoid being hurt (something he actually unveils that very episode in his lessons to MK. Macaque indirectly lets us know how he thinks with his learned ruthlessness).
Yeah, uh, I donât know how to say this, but your buddy killing you 500 years ago doesnât justify you trying to kill his mentee. Is the reason heâs upset valid? Yeah. Not valid enough to manipulate and try to murder MK, though.
Also⌠we have no proof he âhides his good awayâ. That was an assessment made by MK. You know, the guy who generally tries to see the good in people. Maybe Macaque was teaching MK with methods he genuinely believed in, but you can literally see throughout the episode how Macaque is manipulating MK and making him more and more angry and prone to lashing out so he can steal his powers. Using MK to get back at Wukong was Macaqueâs first and foremost priority that episode.
In Shadow Play, he outright refers to MK as his student, and they have a conversation at the end that really should've explained everything. He says he's "a good kid with a terrible mentor".
Macaque calls himself MKâs mentor to fuck with him. Thatâs it. He says it in a mocking tone, and is pleased when MK snaps back. I agree that he was definitely growing somewhat fond of MK by the end, but that doesnât change the fact that âstudentâ was a word used by Macaque to mock MK, and MK visibly reacts with anger and frustration when heâs called that by Macaque. Not exactly a moniker used with fondness in that episode.
This episode isn't him mentally tormenting MK just for the sillies.
⌠Yes. It literally is. The entire episode he mocks MK and makes assumptions about MKâs character that he based on (his biased and untrustworthy view of) Sun Wukong. Macaque literally drags MK through the mud while peppering his friends around, laughing at him for relating to the warrior. Why? Because Macaque assumes MK and Sun Wukong are the same people when theyâre NOT.
Also⌠even if Macaque was trying to teach MK a lesson, he didnât have to strip away the free will of three people to do it. He had so many other options. He chose to hurt people.
It's him, in the harsh and brash nature I mentioned before that we actually see best in perspective post-redemption with the game he has MK play in Season 4, teaching MK to never forget where he came from and to not allow his newfound power and glory to cause him to forget about the people who care about him and who helped him get there. He tells the story about him and Wukong as a way of saying "don't let you and your friends become like us, don't ruin the good thing you have". This is an inherently good lesson done in a way that would disallow MK to actually see that Macaque is trying to help.
I agree that the lesson is good, but itâs still based on Macaqueâs biased perspective of Wukong and MK. MKâs issue that episode wasnât him becoming a glory-hound and forgetting his roots, he was having a breakdown over losing his mentor and discovering that heâs a magical monkey. However, I will agree on this point that Macaque was genuinely trying to help here.
His holding Mei hostage was obviously not okay (and I'm pretty sure he was bluffing, because he literally said before that that he didn't want to have to hurt anyone and that he was only there for the rings but that isn't the conversation, and either way holding people hostage is inherently bad),
Headcanon. We have no proof he was bluffing. Not wanting to hurt someone is very different from hurting someone anyways, and as weâve seen Macaque is VERY capable of killing someone. In fact, Iâd argue he had more motivation to do something drastic here considering he was literally being consumed by LBDâs curse! And againâ he chose to hold Mei hostage and threaten Tang to complete the ritual. He couldâve waited it out or tried to talk but he did not. He chose the violent route. Sure, maybe he did because of his trauma, but that was still a choice he made.
but again, we know why. You can hear it in his voice and his dialogue that he's become desperate. Testimonies from both Wukong and Peng let us know that Macaque has never been the fearless type. In fact, his self preservation bleeds into a lot of his moments, where we never see him go in swinging. He plays mind games, he turns his fights psychological to give himself the upper-hand. So we know that Macaque is both, literally not himself, and clearly behaving in ways he never would. When he breaks free, he tries to run away. He doesn't keep pursuing MK and the gang, he tries to save himself and again, leave the rest to them.
Yeah, and he also gives himself the upper hand because he likes to be in control and psychologically fuck with his opponents. And actually? Aside from how desperate he sounds, nothing Macaque did in that episode was out of character. Being consumed by LBDâs curse didnât change his brain chemistry all of a sudden, Macaque was capable of holding Mei hostage WAY before even coming into contact with LBD.
Also, yeah, he does run away. He runs away from the consequences of his actions after torturing Mei and forcing Tang to complete the ritual, leaving everyone else to deal with the mess he made.
And his regret and remorse are shown in the way he sticks around and keeps helping them when he has no reason to. He doesn't need to help out with LBD in s3 after he's free, cheer up MK with his speech, or help Wukong break out of the Scroll of Memory, or be there for the fight against the Brotherhood all in s4, or have that talk with Wukong at the beginning of s5, especially, again, given everything we know about him and his constant feeling of needing to flee, but he does all of it anyways.
You do realize that in the s3 special and the latter half of s4 the world is about to end, right? Macaque helps because itâs in his own self-interest. I will give you season 5, but the earlier seasons? Heâs helping because heâs not a dumbass and knows that the world is close to ending and that he should probably stop it if he doesnât want to DIE.
Also if someone showed their âregretâ by sticking around to do the bare minimum with no apologies Iâd yell at them to leave. He doesnât even show remorseâ he never apologies or looks regretful. Heâs the same as always; cocky, snarky, and arrogant with a hatred for Wukong. Sure, it may have dimmed as the series progresses, but heâs mostly the same except heâs a âgood guyâ now. No apologies to Tang, Mei, Sandy, MK, Wukong, anyone. He never shows any kind of regret in any way. Claiming that sticking around is how he shows regret is headcanon territory.
Should he have an apology? Of course he should, and it sucks that we don't get one, but we know that Macaque shows his feelings through action, and, in moments of vulnerability, isn't very good with words. It's why MK thinks Macaque is just being a dick when he initially tries to give him advice in s4.
Headcanon (Iâm noticing a theme here). Sure, Macaque isnât a very open book with his emotions, but you canât say that he shows regret through actions when those actions have been bare-minimum saving the world. He never tries to show kindness to anyone heâs hurt. He dips in, saves the day with snarky commentary, and dips out.
Yes, Macaque isnât good with words, but he also doesnât seem to try. When he shows up as MKâs having a breakdown in season 4 he doesnât try to comfort the kid, he literally announces himself by degrading Wukong. Whichâ do you think that would make MK feel better? Sorry, that was mean, but seriously.
MK thought Macaque was being a dick because Macaque showed up acting like one.
He didn't try to murder MK, he used him as bait to satiate a long-standing grudge. A bad thing, but not done unprompted.
⌠Yes. Yes, he did. He wouldâve crushed MK to a pulp in s1 ep9 had Wukong not shown up. Macaque had no idea that Wukong wouldâve shown up at that exact moment. For all he knew MK was about to die by his hand and he was CHILL with it. More than chill, actually!
Alsoâ what do you mean ânot done unpromptedâ?! Trying to kill a kid because you have beef with his mentor seems pretty unprompted to me! MK had no issues with Macaque until Macaque showed up to manipulate and kill him. Just because Wukong wronged Macaque once doesnât make Macaque trying to kill his mentee prompted, I would say doing something like that is very much unprompted!
He didn't brutalize MK. He used harsh means to teach MK a valuable lesson. It was bad to use MK's friends the way that he did, it was bad to go at MK's safety and headspace to get his point across. But it was done with the intent of a good outcome.
What point?! What outcome?! I just rewatched the episode and all Macaque says is that MKâs a good kid with a bad teacher (which is an opinion, by the way), and Macaque couldâve just said that. And he says that AFTER he leaves the theatre and MK had to hunt him down. The âpointâ Macaque was trying to get across was that MK and Wukong were selfish assholes who didnât care about their friendsâ which is a biased and factually incorrect narrative that he made up because he couldnât see Wukong and MK as two different entities.
Iâm sorry, but no lesson is worth violating the autonomy of three people and traumatizing another. Tell me; if Wukong did anything similar to that to teach MK a lesson, would you still be cool with it?
He fought Tang for the Ring of Samadhi (I'm pretty sure he barely even hit him, so I wouldn't say "violently beat on", but an attack is still an attack so I won't tell you you're wrong)
Macaque kicks Tang in the face and throws him to the floor. He tries to punch him in the face and the ONLY reason he didnât get to kick the shit out of Tang more was because Tang managed to unlock his cicada powers. Macaque didnât beat on Tang more because of lack of opportunity, not lack of malice.
and, again, was just playing mind games as we see him do constantly no matter the enemy--a defense mechanism, a legit fighting strategy.
Itâs also known as projection. Macaque does it a lot, especially to MK. Macaque brings up Wukong during their fight despite the fact that Tang was benched by MK and has barely interacted with Wukong that season. Alsoâ Tang is (if weâre going off of Word of God) around 40. What threat does he pose to Macaque to necessitate a defense mechanism? Even when Tang gets powers itâs just making a shield. THAT is a defense mechanism.
But he was under the iron fist of LBD, and wouldn't have even bothered with Tang otherwise (I really could keep going about his actions in s3 and how well masked his encouragement of their team actually is). He was given his warning before this moment, and literally almost was killed then and there before he told her about their plan. LBD wouldn't have even known about it and thus wouldn't have had the time to prepare until his life was on the line.
This is true, but again, he goes about things in the most violent manner possible. Alsoâ the only visible encouragement I see is at the end of âThe Winning Sideâ, and thatâs mostly to himself. Sure, maybe heâs not as violent as he could be, but thatâs still not better.
His siege of the Dragon Palace of the East Sea was also only done because the LBD was practically dangling his right to live in front of him and as a means of self-preservation. This is a bad thing he does, but one that hardly counts, because again, he never would've bothered otherwise.
Iâm gonna let you in on a little secret: the siege of Ao Guangâs palace? Yeah, that was before the ice curse that threatened to encase Macaqueâs body. Sure, he was being coerced by LBD before then, but he still chose to attack the palace. He acknowledges that Ao Guang was only sent to slow him downâ he couldâve left and pursued the team instead! But he instead chose to siege the palace and assault Ao Guang and he does so smiling and laughing.
Alsoâ my god, âone that hardly countsâ?! Just because youâre being coerced into an action doesnât mean that everything you do during that suddenly doesnât count! Oh, it doesnât count to Macaqueâs character? Well, guess what! It counts to the destroyed palace, the probably injured people who lived in that city, and the definitely injured Ao Guang.
You canât write off everything Macaque does in s3 and use LBD as a scapegoat. She is an instigator for his actions, yes, but she wasnât whispering in his ear to attack the palace. And if she wasâ he sure seemed to have a hell of a time doing it either way.
You're right, trauma doesn't exempt someone from responsibility, but the point isn't that Macaque isn't responsible for his bad actions, because in most cases, he is. But there's a lot of detail and understanding of his character that's missed when you take all of his actions before his redemption (and even after for some reason) and write him off as a "bad person".
Holding someone accountable â missing nuance and detail. Macaque does bad things repeatedly, many times of his own free will, and even when they arenât he takes them a lot farther than necessary.
And I gotta askâ when was Macaqueâs redemption for you? Was it when he said sorry or showed remorse to somebody? Because I hate to break it to you, but that NEVER happens. Never. Not once. He leaves, shows up to nominally help, then leaves. There is zero present remorse there. Saving the world one time after all your other options are exhausted and getting a little speech about how deep down youâre actually a good person doesnât âredeemâ you.
I thought we all agreed that redemption is taking accountability for your actions and making steps to be better. Macaque never does either of those things. The most he does is save the world and help out the team. Thatâs it. He doesnât say sorry. Heâs not kind â physically or with words â to anyone. He sticks to the shadows and doesnât say anything until thereâs an opportunity to be snarky and bag on Wukong. That is it.
Also, like I said at the start, Time never writes Macaque off. They acknowledge several times his complexity, and how he is a very nuanced character with multiple facets. But being a complex dick is still being a dick.
Thatâs all! If youâve read this far thank you, and again, I donât mean this as an insult, just a debate. Have a good day!
For fun how about rating Wukong ship from lmk and give your opinion why?
SWK Ship Ratings
(Scores rank from -10 at the lowest, and 10 at the highest)
Shadowpeach
Name Rating: 5/10. Basic, but rolls off the tongue. Started the trend of Sun Wukong having extremely basic ship names- more on that below.
Canon Rating: 0/10. Whatever they had in the past, Macaque simply treats Wukong far too awfully to really justify the two of them ever getting together. Even the attempts at reconciliation feel more like extremely forced ship baiting, given how it goes from one of the two being marginally kinder to the other than usual, then immediately dropping it for more sniping. (Past!Shadowpeach receives 5/10.)
Fanon Rating: -10/10. Iâve spoken at length about this, but fans love to distort Wukong into a drooling abuser so stupid he canât breath through his nose, usually while turning Macaque into a Possession Sue who only serves to be the authorâs simpering self-insert who is the most perfect little baby of all time who has never ever done anything wrong at all even once. If there is an attempt to be ânuancedâ or âunbiasedâ it manifest as âSun Wukong âkilledâ (re: defended himself against) Macaque so heâs worse.â Itâs an awful, extremely pervasive dynamic that rots any fandom enjoyment I could have had for this couple.
Personal Enjoyment: 6/10. Getting to write Macaque as the legitimately awful person that he is takes off the edge of seeing constant âuwu sadboiâ Macaque content. Still, I donât touch anyone elseâs Shadowpeach content because of this.
Peachlotus
Name Rating: 2/10. As youâll see, most ship names involving Sun Wukong are, uh⌠extremely lazy. Just one of the other characterâs traits with âpeachâ slapped before/after it. Fandom really dropped the ball with most of these. This one is especially clunky, at least on my tongue.
(See, Macaque gets stuff like Lunartides, Inkypages, Shadowpeach, etc- all very cool.. We need to diversify the nouns is what Iâm saying. Coulda been something like âGingerRootâ cause orange fur + plant boy. âFlowerBudsâ for the platonic name for peaches + lotuses. Do you guys see what Iâm saying. It canât just be raw peaches all the way down.)
Canon Rating: 2/10. Ne Zha also doesnât treat Wukong too kindly, interacting with him mostly through insults and physical attacks. He does seem to have some understanding of the king, though, which gives him a slight boost over Macaque.
Fanon Rating: 1/10. It barely exists, and what little does exist is essentially just âNe Zha is mad at Wukong over what the fuck ever, so theyâre fightingâ and little more. Thereâs a lot of potential for bonding over immortality and awful pasts or being commandeered by domineering authority figures, which I wish was used more often.
Personal Enjoyment: 2/10. I donât see the dynamic, personally. Again, Ne Zhaâs only interactions with him are only ever vitriolic or exasperated in nature, which doesnât leave stable footing for a relationship to stand. Maybe Iâll make a chatbot for them one day and see if I come around to it.
âFreepeachesâ
Name Rating: -5/10. This shit is exactly what Iâm talking about with the lazily slapping âpeachâ onto whatever and going on. âFreeâ has no meaning between Wukong and Tang- itâs just a holdover from a more popular ship. Tang only mooches food from Pigsy. Thatâs one of the biggest elements of their dynamic. Sure, Tang likes free stuff (food, rides, physical labor), but when does he ever get that from Wukong? It just makes no sense.
AND IF IT HAD TO HAVE THE FRUIT, TANGYPEACHES WAS RIGHT THERE
Canon Rating: 6/10. Tang literally drew himself and the Monkey King together inside a heart. He adores Wukong, thought maybe not for who he truly is- and the two donât any interaction in terms of Tang realizing his autistic parasocial special interest idol is a lonely old sage who misses his friends, which cripples what was a pretty cute dynamic. I think Tang coming down from his hero worship and being just a genuine friend to SWK would be cute, definitely.
Fanon Rating: 9/10. Pretty enjoyable! Freepeaches is one of the few dynamics where Sun Wukong isnât constantly turned into a punching bag/villain to be beaten around for the amusement of the audience, and the two are often portrayed as legitimately healthy together- I especially enjoy how Tang is portrayed as needing to move past his hero worship for the two to have a healthy relationship. Itâs cute.
Personal Enjoyment: 6/10. Never addressing the resemblance to Sanzang or having them interact in regards to this while the circlet is back on Wukongâs head feels like a massively missed opportunity, honestly. I think Sun Wukongâs personal feelings have been left to the wayside for far too long in canon, and getting to a point where almost every fucking character represses their feelings is lazy and boring.
Peachbuns
Name Rating: 4/10. Again. Just âpeachâ slapped onto an adjective or noun. Itâs frustratingly boring. This one sounds delicious and both components are related to food at least, which fits Pigsyâs background⌠but it also sounds like something a horny dude would ask for pics of in your DMs.
Canon Rating: 1/10. Pigsy isnât willing to take any of Wukongâs shit, so he serves as a pretty great âbullshit barrierâ that provides a legitimately strict opposing force to Wukong, but thereâs little else to even their relationship out. Heâs never kind or supportive or worried- if the two interact, itâs always through the lens of âPigsy is mad/suspiciousâ. Thereâs never any real bonding or growth between them at all.
Fanon Rating: 4/10. This ship barely exists, and when it does itâs Sun Wukong being lectured through life by a big strong man- not a dynamic Iâm a fan of. However, it is surprisingly kind to Wukong in terms of empathizing with his struggles. Again, I wish there was less of âPigsy teaches Wukong basic life skillsâ because it falls right back into the revolting fanon that is âSWK is a big dumb fuck who canât read or cook or take care of himself without a husband to wipe his ass.â
Personal Enjoyment: 2/10. I just donât click with it. Pigsy doesnât like Wukong, doesnât trust him, and doesnât interact with him outside of that.
Moonstone
Name Rating: 10/10. This is what I like! Moonstone is not only a very real (and very beautiful) mineral, but it ties to both of them equally! You donât see Wukongâs status as a stone-born demon be referenced often, so this is a refreshing change of pace from the constant âpeachâ names.
Canon Rating: 7/10. Changâe is a lovely woman who is simultaneously not be willing put up with Sun Wukongâs bullshit while still legitimately respecting and admiring him. It makes for a nice duality in their relationship that most of his dynamics donât provide.
Fanon Rating: 10/10. The working dynamic is so fucking good to start with that Iâve never once seen fanon drop the ball. Never. This ship is always so fucking sweet and honest with Changâe calling out Wukong for his bullshit while never pushing it to the âShit on Sun Wukong Showâ levels that the fandom loves so much- she takes no shit, but does no harm. Sheâs supportive and acknowledges his traumas and fears. Wukong does his best for her. Moonstone shippers get an A+ and extra recess time.
Personal Enjoyment: 7/10. I just⌠I really like this one, dammit. Thereâs not a lot to go off of, but seeing fanworks that do not primarily treat SWK like living trash/baby the hell out of him is nice.
Lionpeach
Name Rating: 3/10. Again. Very boring and generic. Iâve seen Fuzzypeach which is a little cuter, at least. Still, itâs all the same âpeachâ+noun format.
Canon Rating: 3/10. The devotion Azure bears to Sun Wukong seems like it would bear a higher marking, but itâs shallow and flimsy. Azure never understood Wukong, never wanted what was best for him, never cared about his safety or happiness. Azure projects his beliefs and wants onto the people around him, blinding the big fella to shortcomings on their parts, and is delusional enough to never look inwards. Still, I can legitimately see
Fanon Rating: 0/10. Itâs just smut. Thatâs it. When it isnât itâs just âOoooh! Azure is jealous of Macaque! Tee-hee, sorry Azure!â and thatâs it. Iâve never actually seen any non-sexual, Azure-focused Lionpeach.
Personal Enjoyment: 5/10. Itâs a fun enough dynamic to explore, especially with how unhealthy it is. Iâll probably make a bot of this too one day. Maybe a âyandere dadsâ type. Or a mutual Primal Moon bot.
Celestialchaos
Name Rating: 10/10. Another not peach-based name is a win in my book!
Canon Rating: 6/10. Xiangliu is civil enough to Wukong (about as much as everyone else), but the mention of them having once been friends is what got my attention. Shrouded past + + potential reincarnation shenanigans + decently civil behavior = a very happy writer. Itâs so little but it makes my brain itch.
Fanon Rating: 0/10. It doesnât even exist babes ;( Iâm scrounging for water in the lonely plains of a desert yâall. Iâm a lonely little cactus and Celestialchaos is my annual three-inch rain.
Personal Enjoyment: 10/10. Câmon now. You all were expecting this. I love this ship. Iâve already made four chatbots. I love Xiangliu as a wild little freak who desperately tries to push Wukong away from other people and sad lonely Wukong finding refuge in a freaky toxic snake. Especially I like the idea of Xiangliu pitting himself against Macaque and going after Sun Wukong just to cause a little trouble, only to actually catch feelings and start pursuing him in earnest. I like âI want you at your worst so I can prove that I still love you even thenâ Xiangliu and âYou love me at all?â Wukong.
I really like this ship.

something i do not think i've mentioned yet is that dream/alt!zakri is like... his own character. he's zakri but not enough to be fully the same. whether or not the version of him seen in the dream sequence comic is actually real is up to interpretation but he is, distinctly, his own guy. they're different sides of the same coin, yes, but they're still different sides
if he is real to whatever extent, i figure he's probably completely unconscious the majority of the time and gets woken up once every however long to be present in some variety of weird dream sequence. most of the time they're mostly just bits and pieces of memory from his own timeline, in which he's really not aware of what's happening, but rarely you'll get something similar to the dream sequence comic where he's more aware of the situation. the dreams involving him are always strangely calm and comfortable, no matter what is happening. dreams involving alt!zakri seem to affect main timeline zakri the worst when he wakes up
dunno if this is worded in a way that makes sense. it's just a few thoughts. anyway some design notes include he has a different outfit (doesn't have zakri's massive coat, prefers short sleeves), has shorter hair and a bit of a different haircut, and his face is definitely different somehow - generally seen as entirely faceless in dream sequences, though
#if you want my answer for whether or not i personally see him as real the anwer is nnnot really#he's barely more than a trick of the light. echoes of someone reverberating through zakri's thoughts#something of a shadow cast by the memories his dreams so like to tap into#THIS SAID. alt!zakri's deal is up to interpretation and i encourage you to make up your own thoughts about him#the lore around him is intentionally unclear. while i see him as a trick of the light it's perfectly fine to disagree with me on this#posting#oc: zakri#i mean i did just get done saying he's a different character but he is still *a* zakri and this tag encompasses all zakris everywhere#the side plot crew#story: bad end

I really wish some of the actresses who have voiced Disney Princesses would stop comparing their princess to the previous ones and claim how she was the "first" one to have *gasp* independence and strength *gasp*. Have they ever watched a Disney movie outside of their own?
#disney#disney princess#txt#that crap irks me#a few of them have done like paige o'hara mandy moore auli'i cravalho#can people talk about disney princesses as humans and not as stand-in's for âgirl powerâ for once?#this is why i mess ONLY with jodi benson. she is one of the only ones who speaks about her character as a PERSON and not just a vessel for#whatever the hell they want to promote#âshe isn't like the othersâ head asses#shut up#ironically they are actually pushing that âi'm not like other girlsâ mentality on them LMAO#i mean jodi will actually bring up all of her character traits and praise how well-written she is and now real she feels#some of the other ones only say âshe didn't need no man so there's THATâ đ#don't get wrong i respect their work and contribution but man that stuff really annoys me#the guys who have voiced their princes do not do that nonsense. they don't feel the need to compare their characters to the previous ones#only women do this crap. i ain't surprised. it's expected honestly#i mean imagine if one of the va's for a disney prince went âmy character was the first one to have a personalityâ#cuz we all know that if disney princesses have been getting blasted for their lack of proactivity and independence#the princes have been getting blasted for their lack of personalities which is also bullcrap too and that criticism was decimated a long#time ago as well as the princess one#but yeah imagine that#although bruno campos (hunky babe prince naveen) did say that his prince was âdifferentâ from the others and it was like uuuh no he isn't#he is cocky smooth handsome tall muscular and charming he is actually like MOST of the princes at the beginning if we are gonna be honest#he just takes it to a slightly more exaggerated level

Close to You | Denki x Chubby!Reader
Summary; Denki doesnât play when it comes to threats to your relationship, even at the expense of his friends.
Warnings: smut (p in v, implied cunnilingus, breeding kink (I mean itâs međ) slight quirkplay) mean!Denki (but really only to his friend, he takes it out on your pussy thoughđŁ) dickhead!bakugo.
SN: I will be posting the Jungkook fic soon!!đbut this is just a little snack I had preplanned until thenđđ
You werenât quite sure how you got here.
As soon as Denki stormed through your door, everything had been a bit of a blur. The only things you were able to make out of the senseless rambling was âfucking dickheadâ âcan make her come harder than anythingâ âgonna fuckinâ breed herâ.
That, that had your pussy quivering.
While you were busy pondering what brought on this sudden shift in your boyfriendâs mood, Denki was thinking of all the different ways he was going to show everyone just how much youâre his.
â â
âDoes he always talk to you like that?â Denki looks up at you from where his head is resting on your lap. âWho?â He asks, brows furrowed in confusion.Â
Youâd both decided it was time for you to meet his friends and he couldnât have been more excited about it. You met with the group at a homey sports bar for the more relaxed atmosphere and besides a few minor flubs, he thought you all got along well. You and Mina made plans to get your nails done together, you recommended the rolling papers you use to Sero, and Kirishima hadnât found someone with his sense of humor in ages. You even managed to bring Bakugo out of his shell, bouncing recipes off of one another seamlessly. So he wondered what went wrong.
âBakugo, I donât really like how he talks to you.â You try to convey without looking controlling. âLike when he calls you stupid and things like that. I mean he even had you running around, getting stuff for him today like youâre some âerrand boyâ.â âThatâs just how he is,â Denki waves you off. He was used to Bakugoâs antics after having gone to school with him, so he knows better than to take it to heart. âAnd he doesnât genuinely mean it when he calls me dumb.â He chuckles, focusing his attention back to whatâs playing on TV. You sigh, a bit unsatisfied with his answer. âYou know your friends better than I do,â You start, carding your fingers through his blonde tresses. âI just donât think itâd kill him to be a bit kinder to you. Youâre not in high school anymore, you donât have to cater to him.â You say, pressing a kiss to his forehead. But what you said got him thinking.
â âÂ
If Denki was being honest, he was pretty accustomed to the way things were. And if he hadnât met you, he was sure that this wouldâve been his everyday life.
You hadnât meant to initially, but you made him realize that there was a sort of hierarchy within his friend group with Bakugo at the head and after being with you for so long, he realized he was actually getting fucking sick of it.
Sure, Bakugoâs kind of behavior is expected when youâre a hormonal teen struggling with new emotions, but now itâs time to get a fucking grip.
He hadnât even meant for everything to go down the way it did, but Katsukiâs nothing if not a shit starter.
â â
âand then Minaâs gonna pick her up so they can get their nails done. Iâm pretty sure theyâre gonna head back to (Y/N)âs place to get ready and we can pick them up from there.â Kirishima explained to Denki, whilst simultaneously narrowly dodging a blue shell in Mario Kart. Denki grunts in frustration, his character having slipped on a banana peel. âThat sounds good, gives us plenty of time-â Heâs cut off by Katsukiâs brash voice sounding from the couch. âHey, Dunceface, go and get me a milk carton from the kitchen.â
Now, normally Denki wouldâve made a playful comment about Katsuki being lazy before getting up and doing what he was told, but after being with you, after spending so much time working on bettering himself not just for you, but for himself, heâs not just gonna be walked all over anymore.
âNah Iâm in the middle of something, anyways, Kiri. I was think-â âHAH?! Did ya fuckinâ hear me? I wasnât asking-â âIs it really that serious, Bakugo? Iâm doing something so just get it yourself.â He scoffs, rolling his eyes at Bakugoâs immaturity. Both Kirishima and Sero watch the display with baited breath, unsure why Kaminari suddenly has a death wish. Bakugoâs eyes widen at the blatant disrespect, sparks threatening to shoot from his hands, however, Kaminari doesnât back down.
Katsuki narrows his eyes before a humorless chuckle escapes him, âOh, I get it. Ever since Chubs decided to fuck with your dumbass you think youâre a big man. But no matter who you fuck, Dunceface youâll always be the idiot who canât function after using their quirk.â Bakugo practically spits.Â
If Katsuki had said something like this around a year ago, Denki wouldâve probably sulked and went to do what Bakugo had told him to, but now, he felt nothing but pure indifference. âYou know something Bakugo, I really used to admire you,â Kaminari starts, a smug smirk making its way to Bakugoâs lips. âI really thought I wanted to be strong like you. But now, now I just feel sorry for you. I mean you spend everyday comparing yourself to Midoriya, youâre shitty to everyone who fucking cares about you and youâre so insufferable to everyone else that no one else genuinely WANTS to get near you.â A humorless chuckle leaves Denkiâs own lips, grateful to finally get this off his chest. âYou think people want to be around you because youâre cool when the only reason they can even stand to be near you is because of how dangerous your QUIRK is. People wouldnât give a fuck about you otherwise.â Kaminari stands, collecting his stuff before moving towards the door, âIâll see you guys later,â He emphasized to Kirishima and Sero. âMaybe you can get him to be an actual decent human being.â He scoffs, walking out of Kirishimaâs apartment.
Bakugoâs left stunned, Kirishimaâs shocked and Seroâs impressed. Though, it doesnât take long for Bakugoâs shock to turn to anger, explosions ready to burst from his hands. âHeâs. Fucking. DEAD!!â He exclaims, and thatâs all it takes to snap Kirishima out of his stupor, trying his best to calm the explosive blonde down.
â â
Itâs difficult for you to form a coherent thought with the sound of skin slapping against your ears.
Youâre on your knees, arch pressed deep into your back as Denki slams his cock deep inside you. You gasp at the intrusion, but you have no time to recover as he sets an unforgiving pace. âHeâs a fucking bitch. Doesnât know shit.â He growls under his breath, hips canting against the fat of your ass, the sight of the rippling skin making his mouth water. Youâre trying to talk, want to ask him what happened at Kirishimaâs place, but then heâs slamming against that gummy spot deep inside and you keen.Â
Youâre limp, practically dead weight as Denki flips you over onto your back. He has your knees pressed against your chest, your pudgy tummy folded over as he slams his hips against yours, the fat jiggling deliciously.Â
âPlease,â you gasp, trying to catch your breath as he aims directly for your g-spot, your cunt clenching at his unforgiving pace. âFucker thinks he knows shit about us, Iâll fucking show âim.â Denki mutters under his breath, cock throbbing at the warm wetness surrounding it.
Heâs ravenous, tongue laving at your neck, sucking the skin harshly. You whine as his hands reach to pinch your nipples, your clit twitching signs of your impending release. âPlease, baby. Let me cum, please.â You beg, tears threatening to pool in your eyes. The sight has Denki feeling a bit merciful, after all, you werenât the one to rile him up.Â
So he pulls back a bit, sitting back on his haunches to grind his cock deep inside you, hitting spots you couldnât dare reach on your own. He guides one of his hands down to your clit, using little shocks from his quirk on the bundle of nerves.
The feeling sends a new wave of arousal gushing from your already sore cunt, but youâre nothing if not greedy for his cum. âWant you to cum in me, baby. Wanna feel you fill me up.â You murmur, cradling his face in your palms. You do your best to keep eye contact, though, with the way his cock is drilling inside you, the action is difficult. You connect your lips together and the act has Denkiâs hips stuttering before he thrusts once, twice and heâs filling you up, snatching your nth orgasm unexpectedly from you.
You slowly pull away from each other, though Denki is sure to keep his cock nestled deep inside you, flipping you both over so that youâre on top of him. You trace shapes on his bare chest, slowly coming down from your highs. âYou wanna tell me what that was all about?âÂ
Denki sighs as he thinks back on what led him here. There was no doubt that the dynamic in the friend group has shifted, whether that was in his favor or not remained to be seen but what he could see was right in front of him.
You.
You were his present and his future, and as he slips his cock out of your sore cunt and the rush of his cum gushes from you like a river, his mouth waters at the idea of this being his new everyday. He shakes his head as he pushes you to lay back, situating himself between his new home.
âJust wanted to be close to you.â

Since you've mentioned Scarlet Lady in one of your posts, what's your opinion on it?
I've mentioned before that I'm a big Scarlet Lady fan, which is the only reason that I'm comfortable answering asks like this one. I don't publicly criticize the content of hobby creators. That's wildly inappropriate! Punch up, not down.
The linked post was a general discussion of the adaptation process and how @zoe-oneesama did a fantastic job, so for this one, I'm just going to do some general gushing because I do actually like praising and enjoying things!
Scarlet Lady's chosen format (comic) allows it to have this wonderful conversation with canon where it can rely on the framework of canon to tell it's own story while also using canon for jokes and meta commentary. This means that Scarlet Lady is about as close as fan content can get to a direct reboot because it's able to have moments like this one from the comic's first post:
[Image description: Adrien standing in his room after transforming into Chat Noir for the first time. He is beaming and his eyes are shining with excitement as he exclaims, "This is gonna be awesome!"]
A single picture that communicates everything we need to know about Adrien getting his miraculous. When I've done this same thing in fanfic, I had to write out the full scene because that's how novels work. You have to give the full picture. With a comic, you can just quickly acknowledge this thing that we all already know and then move on to the new stuff. A picture really is worth a thousand words! (Or, in my case, more like two thousand...)
This allows Zoe to keep the same akumas that we get in canon without her story feeling like a boring rehash because she can focus on what's different in her version. A novelization of the same content would have to show both the stuff that stays the same and the stuff that changes for it to be coherent. That's a lot less fun to read and write. It's why I basically never revisit canon akumas in my own stuff. It's just too derivative for the written word.
This is one of the big reasons that I loved Scarlet Lady. Because it was able to have that more directly conversation with canon, it was able to take canon and say, "hey, why don't we embrace the tone that you established in season one and retell the story with that vibe?" That's something that I desperately wanted to see, but that is totally unsuited to my chosen artistic form. It couldn't be a novel. It had to be a comic.
If you want to know what a true formula show version of Miraculous would look like, Scarlet Lady is it. It does everything that Miraculous should have done:
Sticks to a lighthearted tone where nothing is ever super serious
Keeps Gabriel entirely unsympathetic
Has slow character development and background hints at a bigger plot as the only serial elements, allowing the individual episodes to be their own story while never feeling incomplete or rushed
Allows characters other than Marinette to shine while keeping Marinette as the clear main character
Makes Adrien narratively important
MAKES THE LOVE SQUARE CUTE SO I CAN ACTUALLY SHIP IT
Understands that Lila and Chloe can't coexist as antagonists
Reverses the love square, which is the best way to tell their story. Yes, I will die on my "love diamond" hill. It's a good hill. Come join me. I'll bring cookies.
I could keep going, but you hopefully get my point. While Scarlet Lady is certainly not the only way to do a formula version of canon, it's proof that a formula version does work! You don't have to go the serious route for Miraculous to be successful.
I want to take some time to gush about the ending, but I don't want to spoil it, so I'll put that gushing under a "read more" in case anyone hasn't seen it. I'll finish out this less spoilerish section with this:
I feel like some people are surprised when they learn that I love Scarlet Lady because - as some of you have probably picked up - it is quite different from my ideal version of canon. I'm not sure why that would stop me from enjoying a thing, though. It's important to remember that our personal ideals are not the only way to tell a good story. There are lots of ways to take what canon gave us and make something wonderful! It's part of the reason that I enjoy being in a fandom.
If I only wanted to see my ideal take on canon, then I'd stick to writing/imagining my own stories. But I don't want that! I like seeing alternate takes, too. Scarlet Lady is one of my personal favorites. It's completely different from anything that I'd ever think to write and that's why I'm so glad that it exists! I like being entertained just as much as I like creating my own entertainment and I don't want to only read stories that look like something I'd write. That's boring!
Spoilers below:
I've mentioned before that there are many, many ways to properly handle Chloe's character and Zoe did such a good job with her take on that! Chloe isn't absolved of all the things she did wrong, but she's also treated as a young woman with the ability to change.
While the comic bares the name of Chloe's alter ego, she was the never the main character. She never went on a journey. The story kept her to her shallow season-one self: a petty brat who just wanted attention. It did this because that's who Chloe was in canon and who Chloe needed to be for the comic to work.
The first time we see any complexity from Chloe is in the comic's final few episodes, which was absolutely the right call for Zoe to make! In a recent post, I talked about how the end of a formula show is the only time when you can break the formula in catastrophic ways and that's what Zoe did. She kept Chloe static until it was time to end the story and that's when the formula breaks. That's when Chloe gets depth because, once she has depth, the formula doesn't work.
That depth is not used to redeem Chloe, but to show us that there's hope for Chloe. That this petty brat who we've been dealing with has some serious issues and needs help. Help that she's going to get far away from the people that she's hurt because her issues aren't an excuse for what she's done. They don't erase the harm that she caused. At the same time, understanding her issues makes us hope that she can be better now and Scarlet Lady took a moment to give us that hope. To show us the START of Chloe's true story.
That is the kind of ending that I have wanted to see in so many properties!!! It was so wonderful to finally get one that did this right. A story that understood that full redemption to the team and damnation to death/suffering are extremes on a scale of possibilities. You don't have to go to extremes! You can fall in the middle and the middle is a perfect, natural place for Chloe to land in this kind of story. Fully redeeming or even fully damning Chloe simply doesn't work in lighthearted formula content. It's too big a lift as canon has already demonstrated.
I also loved Zoe's take on Emilie. I've mentioned that I don't like evil Emilie in part because it makes her revival feel like the start of a new story. She's back and she'd bad, so we have to take her down now! But I don't want that. I want the story to end when Gabriel is stopped. Zoe does this by giving us an Emilie that is another perfect middle ground. She matches canon's uncomfortable implications without feeling like a true villain who is a threat to society.

could i request spencer x bombshell!reader where maybe spencer and the team meet readerâs ex boyfriend / a guy she used to be interested in and heâs sooo different from spencer so he assumes her flirting is a joke but really she never had a type until she met spencer n now sheâs only into nerdy, sweater-vest wearing sweethearts <3
love ur work sm i only read spencer fics but i read all your characters bc the writing is so intoxicating !!
thank you for your request angel! <3 1k, fem
Spencer looks adorable today. Youâre not sure if he knows, but that can be easily rectified.Â
âSpencer Reid,â you say sternly.Â
Heâs immediately wide-eyed and sorry. âWhat?â he asks, pouting.Â
âYou have some explaining to do.â You glare, taking your compact from your pocket. You open it, check your appearance, fighting a huge smile as you flick the mirror on him accusingly. âSo, what do you have to say for yourself?âÂ
âI donât get it.â His eyes jump between the mirror and you. âSorry?âÂ
âYou should be sorry. Do you see how nice you look today?â He rolls his eyes. âHey, donât act like you donât know what I mean.â
You and Spencer have known each other for years now, and you love him. Youâd die for him easily in the field, and out of it too, but youâre not together and heâs bad at accepting compliments, so he shrugs you off like youâre only teasing him.Â
âMy handsome partner,â you say. Even if he isnât your boyfriend, thatâs your loophole. You and Spencer get paired for everything these days, because youâre best friends and Hotch has given up on separating you (though professionally thereâs no need). âI could eat you.âÂ
âStill mildly threatening, then,â a voice says.Â
You spin in your chair, shocked and a little horrified to find the last person you wanted to see here in Connecticut. âCory!â you say, knowing heâll believe youâre enthusiasm if nobody else.Â
âHi, beautiful. You werenât gonna call me?âÂ
Your lips pop as you reply, âI was definitely going to, just as soon as we werenât on the clock. How are you?â you ask, standing to receive the hug you know heâs going to give.Â
Cory is⌠well, heâs gorgeous, though that hadnât been why you had fun with him when you were here last. Heâd seemed nice enough and plainly interested in you at the time, and youâd been sort of lonely, so really he was a necessity of the soul rather than a want. Plus, he was very rich.Â
Gorgeous he may be, but Spencer Reid he is not. You donât deny it to yourself âthe genius behind you has completely changed your type, the kind of man you vy after, and if youâre honest, heâs the one for you. So hugging Cory and pretending youâre going to call him for drinks after the case is over isnât easy. You lie rather than reject him.
âHe seemed nice,â Spencer says in the awkward silence Cory leaves behind.Â
âSure!â you say, blowing out a hot breath. âWas I embarrassing myself? I didnât expect to see him.âÂ
âYou were the same as usual.âÂ
You tilt your head back as the door opens again, worried itâll be Cory back for a last word. Emily smiles at you knowingly, a bag of takeout in hand. âGod, did you see that?â she asks, eyebrows rising. âHe was perfect.âÂ
âIf you like the Greek god motif,â you joke.Â
Spencerâs frowning at his files when you turn back to him. âSpence, whatâs wrong?â you ask.Â
âMm? Nothing.â
âYou sure?â you ask.Â
He maintains that heâs okay as the rest of the team flood in for lunch. You pretend to believe him, not sure what youâve done to upset him but willing to figure it out. You unwrap his food for him and place his plastic cutlery on a napkin as you know he prefers, sorting through the cup drinks to find his diet lemonade. âHere, handsome,â you say, touching his shoulder gently as you sit down next to him.Â
He bristles.Â
âSpencer?â you ask.Â
He looks around the table. Hotch and Rossi are talking about something with shared smiles, while JJ and Morgan debate the case. Emilyâs on her phone with a straw between her lips. They arenât listening, and so he says, âItâs not a fitting nickname.âÂ
âWhat, handsome? Thatâs not a nickname, itâs a pet name, and itâs true. Youâre one of the most handsome guys Iâve ever seen,â âyou laugh and grab his elbow when he shakes his headâ âare you kidding? Spencer, you could be a model. Iâve told you this a hundred times. You have amazing cheekbones, just dreamy, and your lipsââ
âOh, god, please donât start,â he says, covering his face with both hands. He sounds like heâs smiling. âI shouldnât have said anything.âÂ
Hotch shoots you a donât tease look. You send him a vehement Iâm not back, waiting for him to look away before you prod Spencer again. âYouâre so cute, Spencer, you donât get it.âÂ
âI donât wanna be cute, cute isnât your typeââ
Your eyes flare. âWhat would you know about my type, Spencer? Is thisâ is this about Cory?âÂ
âOf course it is,â he says, face pink as he drops his hands.Â
âSpencer, he is not my type.âÂ
âBut you dated.â
âOne date. And that was before I realised I liked dorks in sweater vests,â you say. Youâre both acting like this is half a joke, a skit, in case youâre overheard, but youâre also both well aware that itâs serious and vulnerable and flustering to confess certain things right here and now. Too bad it has to be done. âI miss your glasses, babe, they really added to your charm.âÂ
Spencer shakes his head, picking up his styrofoam boxed lunch to ignore you.Â
You sidle close to him, your pinky finger rubbing the slightest hint of his bare wrist. âWanna get drinks with me tonight? I need a cover story in case Grecian Cory tracks me down. And, you know you get that really cute blush when you drink. What do you say?âÂ
âNo,â he says with a smile, which means yes in this instance.
You kiss his cheek, giggling at the lipgloss left behind. âYouâre my type, handsome.â

The Incredible Hulk (1968) #249
#I liked this reversal of a classic Hulk trope#the Hulk finds himself in this underground ice world and admires it for being pretty and peaceful#but it is too cold for his comfort and he wants to get back to the regular world#and as heâs walking over to this guy to tell him that and get directions from him as to how to get back to the surface world#he knocks into one of his statues and breaks it and says âStatue was pretty! Hulk did not mean to break it!â#and I was expecting this guy to get upset about the statue being broken and so attack the Hulk for that mistake but he didnât even care#what he fought the Hulk for was that he wanted to mantain his peaceful world#and was worried that if the Hulk left alive he would tell people about it#which culminates into this scene where the Hulk criticizes this guy for just attacking him on the assumption the Hulk would ruin his peace#which is actually something that the Hulk has done himself before#just seen a person and assume that theyâre gonna attack him so he attacks them first#and for me thatâs really interesting#how the Hulk says âHulk will never understand puny humans! Hulk does not even want to!â#but because he can be so reactionary when heâs in an upset state heâs not really always as different from humans as he thinks#whereas this Jack Frost character was able to understand his own hypocrisy#and that he called the Hulk a monster when it was him acting monstrously#and he has the presence of mind to reflect on his actions and then try to make up for them#marvel#bruce banner#my posts#comic panels
