Ok, but what about the fact that Snape was a complete hypocrite? He openly looked down on Muggles and Muggle-borns. When his friends cursed someone, he had no problem with it. And he didnât hold back from making nasty comments about them either. Lily didnât like the fact that he hung out with them, but he didnât careâhe brushed it off as âjust a joke.â Yet he expected Lily to stay away from the Marauders. He showed some pretty nasty tendencies even as a kid.
Oh, so now weâre pretending people arenât shaped by their environment? That kids donât absorb the biases of the world they grow up in? That someone whoâs been abused, neglected, and ostracized isnât going to develop warped coping mechanisms, internal contradictions, or, I donât know, cognitive dissonance?
Letâs break this down like youâre five.
Severus grew up in an abusive household, with a neglectful Muggle father who likely hated everything about magic, and a mother who was a beaten-down, powerless witch. His entire experience with the Muggle world was pain, humiliation, and isolation. Of course he gravitated toward the magical world as an escape. And when the magical world itself was split into factions, he latched onto the side that promised him power, belonging, and a way to finally matter.
Do you think that kind of upbringing magically (pun intended) turns someone into a well-adjusted, morally pristine human being? That he would just wake up one day and unlearn all the resentment and bitterness that had been drilled into him since childhood? That he, a literal outcast, would immediately reject the ideology of the only people who accepted him? Because news flashâthat's not how human psychology works.
And yes, cognitive dissonance exists. People hold contradictory beliefs all the time, especially when those beliefs are shaped by pain, trauma, and survival instincts. Snape genuinely loved Lily, yet he still harbored prejudice. He despised the Marauders for tormenting him, yet he didnât think twice when his own friends tormented others. Because peopleâbrace yourselfâare not consistent. They rationalize, they compartmentalize, they act on emotion rather than reason.
And this is where the real irony kicks in: you whine about Snape being a hypocrite, but fail to see that this very hypocrisy is what makes him a well-written, deeply human character. You act like contradictions in a personâs mindset invalidate them, when in reality, theyâre what define us. People change, people regret, people make mistakes. The difference between a shallow, black-and-white character and a rich, layered one is that the latter struggles with these contradictions instead of magically overcoming them in a neat little redemption arc that makes you feel comfortable.
So yes, Snape was prejudiced. He was bitter. He was deeply, tragically flawed. But he was also capable of love, remorse, and change. He spent decades working against the ideology he once clung to, sacrificing everythingâincluding his dignity, his safety, and ultimately his lifeâbecause he realized he had been wrong.
And that? Thatâs what makes him more compelling than any of the one-dimensional "good guys" who never had to fight their own demons. Thatâs what makes him more interesting than the people who had privilege, support, and love, yet still acted like assholes just for fun.
So go ahead and clutch your pearls over "hypocrisy," but just know that all youâre doing is proving that you have a painfully shallow understanding of human nature, storytelling, and, frankly, reality itself.

At this point I am convinced some people are watching this show solely via the subtitle files, because that's the only thing that explains drastically misunderstanding everything that's not spelled out in dialogue to this extent.
Honestly some of the most embarrassing mass failure of media literacy I've ever seen. It's not even complicated stuff, it's basic text comprehension and story fluency.
- No, Caitlyn's "I know!" is not anger at being called out; she's saying she is very, very painfully aware of what she's done wrong. Watch it again.
- No she didn't take the guards away or go to the cell to have sex with Vi. TF?!?
It was Vi who initiated; Caitlyn was surprised she did.
She pulled the guards away to help Vi if/when she chose to do what she knows her well enough to know she probably would. Vi makes her choice - Caitlyn doesn't "let" her, she just supports it, because it's Vi's choice to make.
Vi has no idea she's done this until after, it doesn't affect her "agency" at all. That's not what any of those words mean!
- She did this as a direct acknowledgement of and response to Vi's previous criticisms.
You are supposed to be able to make the very, very minimal leap of imagination required to understand what the show is telling you here; that she is genuinely sorry, genuinely committed to getting her shit together, and that she has heard and received every word that Vi has told her.
The reason this gesture is so important is that it demonstrates she's now going out on a limb to put herself, her resources, and her privilege to work for the greater good.
And the reason Vi reacts the way she does is that she understands all of this immediately.
You should not need the show to sit you down and spell this out to you step by step Barney the Dinosaur style.
- She works very hard and sacrifices quite a lot to try to do right by people after fucking up so badly before, but not before very explicitly acknowledging that she can't undo the harm she's already done. And this isn't even an inference thing, she actually even says this bit out loud twice, and you still somehow missed it.
- For $5, what do you think the show was suggesting by having Sevika take up her seat, her final costume have no Enforcer uniform elements, and having her allude to an ongoing struggle. Come on, guess.
I am loathe to call people stupid just because some tv show stuff sailed over their heads, but... y'all are legitimately testing that. This is not exactly The Holy Mountain or something, it is very straightforward storytelling.
And just... I mean why would you be this loud about anything without making sure you didn't have it ass backways first?!? In public!?!? đ
You guys, you have to watch shows to know what is happening in them.

So being a "live" author rather than "write it all up, publish, and come what may" type author, do you ever take reader commentary into consideration? Like I imagine for sure nothing that'd change the story per se, but if people expressed that they liked the exposition for example, do you feel driven to maybe put a little more whenever it fits?
No. The story gets what the story needs; if the readers like a lot of something then I make notes for the next story so that I can (if I choose to do so) design a story with more of that from the start. Being a 'live' author gives very little room for direction, theme or basic structure and tone changes because you can't go back and rewrite published chapters. Spent too much time taking the audience into account will turn you into one of those tv writers who spend too much time reading about their own show on twitter and end up writing a mess as a result.
I keep an eye on the reactions as an educational tool; did this elicit the kind of reactions that I wanted? Is the audience exhibiting the sort of discussions that I expected? If not, why not? That data is used to improve my craft. For the story in progress, the main thing I'm checking for is comprehension. Does the audience sufficiently understand the plot and setting? Is there something they're wildly misunderstanding? That's the one thing that does change how I write the story in progress; some misunderstanding is normal (the audience will usually have some people who understand something explain it to the people who don't), but if everybody's misunderstanding or forgetting something basic, it means I've communicated it incorrectly and need to communicate it again before it becomes plot critical. Checking the live reactions is also a good way to skim for minor plot holes and ensure that your twists are at the level of predictability you want. You want a small number of people to guess each twist in advance; this shows that you have correctly seeded the pieces and it's not coming out of absolutely nowhere. If a very large proportion of the audience is guessing a twist, then it's not a twist, it's a revelation for the character, which is perfectly fine and YOU SHOULD NOT ALTER IT, THEN IT'S A MESS COMING OUT OF NOWHERE, YOU'RE NOT IN COMPETITION WITH YOUR AUDIENCE OH MY GOD TV WRITERS GET OFF TWITTER, but it's handy to know which one you're writing in advance.

i've seen a couple people in the notes of this very good post about fictional polyamory by @thebibliosphere say things along the lines of "oh, i've been doing it wrong :(" or "how do i know if i did this right??" or "i should probably give up and start over, i wrote this badly :(" and. no!!!!
(i AM seeing far MORE people say "oh, this clarified and helped me so much, i think i know how to fix issues i've been having with my own story" which. YES!!!!)
listen. if you're a monogamous person who's writing a polyamorous relationship, and you've been focusing mainly on The Triad and All Three Together All The Time as the endgame, that's literally fine. that's a perfectly acceptable and strong starting point for your plotting, imo. you do not need to give up on a story that you've started like this.
but the things discussed in the post Can and Should improve your execution!
you can keep the same plot beats and overall relationship arc 100%. polyamorous relationships are infinite in their formations, every one is unique. "basically a monogamous romance but with three people" Does exist, as a relationship type. you're not hashtag Misrepresenting (TM) poly people with it
BUT i do think it will help to read up on some poly people talking about how their relationships Differ from monogamous ones.
so i have outlined some basic important concepts about polyamory.
MORE IMPORTANTLY though, i've broken down some questions that you can answer throughout the writing process to strengthen your individual dyad relationships, your individual characterization, & your characters' individual feelings/experiences. this is a writing resource have fun
future kitkat butting in to say i spent over two hours writing this and it definitely needs a readmore. it is also NOT comprehensive. but everything should be pretty simple to follow! feel free to reblog if you find it helpful yourself or just want to reward me for how gotdan long this took KSLDKFJKDL.
i've grabbed quick links for a couple of the important concepts, some have SEO pitches in them but the info largely seems to be good. (if i missed anything Egregiously Gross on these sites i should be able to update the links with better ones later, since they're under the readmore.)
sidenote: this is NOT meant to be overwhelming, despite the length. if you can't read all of this, that's Okay. you do not need to give up on your writing.
here we go:
compersion!
compersion is a BIG thing in a lot of polyamorous relationships. it's joy derived from seeing two (or more) of your partners happy together, or joy derived from seeing your partner happy with someone else.
compersion is really important as a concept because it highlights that every individual relationship within a polycule is different -- and that that's a GOOD thing. it's sort of the inverse of jealousy.
by the "inverse of jealousy," i mean that instead of feeling left out and upset and possessive, you feel happy/joyous/content.
i can use personal experience as an example: it's a Relief for me when my partners receive joy/support/sex/romance/etc that i can't (or prefer not to) give them. and i love seeing my partners make each other laugh and be silly together.
it's 100% okay for a poly triad not to be together 100% of the time, it doesn't mean that the third member is being left out or not treated equally when two people do things alone together.
(i have individual dates with my partners all the time! PLUS larger 3-and-4-person date nights.)
if the third member DOES feel jealous or left out, then the polycule can have a conversation to figure out what needs/wants aren't being met, and solve that. this happens semi-regularly in my polycule, as it will happen in any relationship (including monogamous ones)! it's just part of being an adult, sometimes you have to talk about feelings.
metamours!
a metamour is someone who is dating your partner, but ISN'T dating you. this may not be relevant for people writing closed three-person romantic sexual triads, but it's a super helpful term to know.
the linked article also lists different types of metamour relationships with some fun phrasing i hadn't heard before. the tl;dr is: sometimes you'll be domestic cohabitation friends, sometimes you'll be buddies with your own friendship, sometimes you might not interact much outside of parties, every relationship is different.
there's no one-size-fits-all requirement for metamour relationships. sometimes polyamorous people will end up dating their metamour after a while (has happened to me), sometimes polyamorous people will break up with one partner for normal life reasons, but remain friendly metamours.
the goal of polyamory is NOT for EVERYONE to fall in love. it is 100% okay if this happens in your story, it happens in real life too! but it is also 100% okay for characters to be metamours without ever becoming "more than friends."
(sidenote: try to kill any internalized "more than" that you have when it comes to friendship. friends are just as important and special and vital as partners.)
of course there are a million ways for messiness to occur with metamours within a complex polycule, exactly like with close-knit platonic friend groups. however this post is not about that! there's enough "here's how polyamory can go wrong" stuff out there already, so i'm focusing on the positives here :)
open versus closed polyamorous relationships!
i'm struggling to find an online article that reflects my experience without directly contradicting at least SOME stuff. so i'll give a quick rundown
google has a bunch of conflicting definitions of open relationships and whether open relationships are different from polyamory. the general consensus seems to be that an open relationship prioritizes one partnership (often a marriage), but that each partner can have extraneous flings or long-term commitments (most often sexual in nature).
this is not typically how i use the term wrt polyamory. the poly concept is pretty simple. a closed polyamorous relationship is one with boundaries like a monogamous one. there are multiple partners in the polycule, but they are not interested in having anybody new join said polycule.
an open polyamorous relationship tends to be more flexible -- it just means that IF someone in the polycule develops mutual feelings for a new person, it's fine for them to become part of said polycule if they want to! the relationship/person is open to newcomers.
some groups will need to negotiate this all together, others will just go "haha, you kids have fun." just depends on the individuals!
with open AND closed polyamorous relationships, the most important thing is making sure that there's respectful communication and that everyone is on the same page. but there's no one-size-fits-all way to do that.
i wish i could give you guys a prescriptive "You Must Do It This Way" guide, but that's.... basically the opposite of what polyamory is about, HAHA.
feelings for multiple people!
i was gonna tack this on to the previous section but decided it warranted its own lil bit.
a defining feature (....i'm told?) of monogamous relationships is that a monogamous person only has feelings for One individual at a time. they only want a relationship with one individual at a time. or, if they DO have feelings for multiple people simultaneously, they're still only comfortable dating one person at a time & being exclusive with that one person.
this is perfectly fine!
the poly experience is generally different from this. but once again..... polyamorous people all have different individual perspectives on this.
for me, i have never been able to draw hard boxes around romantic vs sexual vs platonic relationships, & i love many people at once. my personal polycule lacks many strict definitions beyond "these are my chosen people, i want to forge a life with them indefinitely, whatever shape that life takes"
some poly people feel explicit romantic or sexual attraction to multiple people at once, some poly people feel almost no romantic or sexual attraction at all. i'd say that MOST poly people feel different things for different partners, which is not a bad thing!
some poly people are even monogamous-leaning -- they have just chosen one romantic partner who is themselves part of a larger polycule. (so this monogamous-leaning person has at least one metamour!)
or alternatively, they might have one romantic partner AND a qpr, or other ways of defining relationships. (this is a factor in my own polycule!)
i made this its own point because if you're writing a straightforward triad, this is unlikely to come up in the story itself -- but it's worth thinking about how your characters develop/handle feelings outside of their partnerships.
like, is this sort of a soulmateship, 'these are the only ones for me' type deal? in which they won't fall in love with anyone else, and can be fairly certain of that?
that's pretty close to typical monogamous standards but you Can make it work. just be thoughtful with it
alternatively, can you see any of these characters falling in love Again after the happily-ever-after? and how would the triad approach it, if so? what would they all need to talk about beforehand, and what feelings would everybody have about the situation?
it's worth considering these questions even if the hypothetical will never feature in your actual canon, because knowing the answers to these questions will help you understand all of the individuals & their relationship(s) MUCH better.
i've been typing this for nearly two hours and there's a lot more i COULD say because... there's just a lot to say. i'll close out with some quick questions that you can ask yourself when developing the dyad dynamics within your triad
first, take a page and create a separate section for each individual dyad. then answer these questions for every pair:
how does each pair act when alone?
how do they act differently alone compared to when they're with their third partner?
are there any elements of this dyad (romantic, sexual, financial, domestic, etc) that these two people DON'T have with the third partner?
if so, what are they?
are there any boundaries or hard limits within this dyad that aren't shared with the third partner?
if so, what are they?
partner 3 goes out of town alone for a few weeks. what are the remaining two doing in their absence?
(doesn't have to be anything special, it's just to get a sense of how the two interact on a day-by-day basis without the third there)
what is something that each partner in the dyad admires about the other -- that they DON'T necessarily see in the third partner?
what problem do These Two Specifically need to solve in the story before their relationship will work?
how is that problem DIFFERENT from the problems being solved within the other two dyads?
doing this for ALL THREE dyads is VITAL imo. that way, you develop complex and nuanced and different relationships that all have unique dynamics.
those questions should be enough to get you started, i hope
then After you've charted the differences in relationships, you can start to jot down similarities in the overarching triad. what does one person admire in Both of their partners? what are activities that all three like to do together? what are boundaries or discussions that all three share?
but the main goal is to figure out how to Differentiate each relationship!
a polycule is only as strong as the individual relationships within it. if two people are struggling with their own relationship, adding a third person won't fix that.
(UNLESS the third person is the catalyst for those two to, like, Actually Communicate And Work Their Shit Out. i just mean that the old adage of "maybe if we just add a third-" works about as well to fix a miserable non-communicative marriage as, uh, "maybe if we have a baby-")
AND FINALLY.
if you're not sure whether your poly romance reads organically to poly people, you can hire a sensitivity reader with poly experience. if you can't afford that, you can read up on polyamorous resources like a glossary of terms & articles actually written by poly people. (and stories written by poly people!)
you can also just.... ask poly people questions, if they're open to it. i like talking about polyamory and my own relationships so you're welcome to send asks if u want, i just can't guarantee i'll answer bc my energy levels fluctuate a lot and i don't always have time.
polyamorous people are in an uphill battle for positive representation right now & so the LAST thing i want to see is authors giving up on their stories bc they're worried about getting things Wrong. well-meaning and positive stories that treat this kind of love as normal, healthy, & aspirational are So So So Needed. even if you guys end up with some funky-feeling details.
seriously, if you're monogamous then you probably don't have a full idea of Just How Nasty a lot of people can get about polyamory. i wish it DIDN'T mean so much for you guys to want to write nice stories about us, but it does mean a lot. and it means a lot that you want to do it WELL.
in conclusion. this is not a prescriptive guide, it's just a way to raise questions. and also, you all are doing FINE.
#thebibliosphere i apologize for tagging u when we don't know each other at all i just want u to get credit for the initial discussion#given that it is so much more thoughtful and clear than anything i'd think to write.#i did NOT mean to spend multiple hours on this but once i started writing i was like#oh god i actually do have like a lot i can tell monogamous people about writing poly people & the poly perspective#anyway. i mention it in the post but people can send me (respectful. obviously) asks if they have questions#i cant promise to answer all of them bc i am bad at this. but if i'm well enough then i'll try#polyamory#non-monogamy#ethical non-monogamy#writing#my writing#writing advice#relationships

âšMC teaches the brothers about "jinx"âš
âIâm kinda hungry,â you voiced, your Curses and Hexes homework doing little to retain your attention.Â
Mammon snorted in response, not bothering to look up from his D.D.D. âWho are ya? Beel?â Â
You waited a second before retaliating, hoping that someone would come to your defense. Alas, it seemed that the brothers lounging around you had long learned to tune out any word from Mammonâs lips. Â
âI have basic needs like all of you too, you know,â you huffed, gesturing to the Avatar of Gluttony, cross-legged on the carpet next to you.  The warmth from the fireplace at your backs cast flickering light over the crinkled chip bag in his massive hand. âEating isnât trademarked by Beel.âÂ
Beel grunted, sharp snaps sounding from the rhythmic churn of his jaw. Â
Leviâs handheld console let out a chime that signaled some sort of victory. âItâs only, like, his whole personality lmao.âÂ
Beelâs chewing paused, but Asmo swooped in first. âThereâs more to Beel than food,â he cooed, âI mean, look at those sculpted muscles! Heâs also the most handsome little brother~ ⥠â Â
âGee, thanks Asmo,â grumbled the lump of blankets on the couch. Â
âAw Belphie, donât be like that! I like your slender physique, too!âÂ
Somehow, the mound of linens seemed to shudder in distaste. Asmo only shrugged, losing himself in his hand mirror. Â
âAsmo is right though,â Satan hummed, turning the page of his current book â A Comprehensive Guide to the Devildomâs Most Toxic Plants, âTo define Beel as solely a glutton does little to recognize all his positive characteristics.â Â
Beel swallowed, before flashing a dazzling beam. âThanks, Satan.â Â Â
The living room fell silent once more, save for Beelâs snacking and the crackling of the hearth. Â
âHey!â You thought youâd try again. âKnow what I could go for right now?âÂ
You paused for anticipation, readying your answer. 1, 2, 3 and...Â
âHellâs Kitchen.âÂ
Your spine went ramrod straight, eyes locking onto Mammon in the split second after your voices had harmonized. Â
âJinx!â You gasped, âYou owe me a soda!â Â
âHuh?â Mammon blinked owlishly. Â
âJinx!â Your enthusiasm was lost on your company. Your neck cracked as you glanced from brother to brother, your grin dampening when they looked at you as though youâd grown a second head. Â
Satan frowned. âWhat are you talking about?âÂ
âIs that some normie saying?â Though he sneered, there was curiosity in Leviâs eyes. Â
âYou donât have jinx here?â You barreled onward, explaining, âItâs a game we play in the human world when two people say the same thing at the same time.âÂ
âHow does it work?â Asmo pursed his lip, which only drew his attention to his shade of lip gloss, his mirror capturing his eyes once more. Â
You shrugged, âThere are various versions of the game. Sometimes, the loser canât speak until they buy the victor a drink. Other times, theyâre silenced until their name is uttered aloud 3 times.â
Mammon lunged forward, toppling off the couch as he rushed on all fours to where you sat on the carpet. Before he could protest, eyes wild with a mix of fear and anger, you placed a finger to his lips.Â
âNope! Not âtil you buy me a Devil Cola!â Â
âLOL!â Levi rejoiced, âMammon, youâre such a n00b!âÂ
You werenât the only one who noticed the way Mammonâs eyes brightened, Satan chiding, âWatch it. You canât say his name or heâs freed, remember?âÂ
âOh~ I wonder how long he can hold his tongue?â Asmo giggled, finally distracted from his mirror. You couldnât blame him. Mammonâs expression was a cross between anguished and constipated. Â
His jaw clenching, slivers of his teeth glinting through curled lips, you could feel the irritation radiating from the Avatar of Greed. Absently, you considered if you should tell him it wasnât an actual curse. Did he know there was no power other than himself silencing him? Â
âCan he eat?â Beel inquired, genuine concern mingling with sympathy as he watched his older brother straighten up and march towards the entrance hall. Â
âYou don't need to speak to eat,â Belphie's muffled voice reasoned beneath the blankets.
âHEY MAMS!â You called to his back, shoulders curled up to his ears in anger, âBuy me a Devil Cola, wonât you?"
And really, you hadnât expected him to follow through at all. He left the room and you returned to your homework. Beel continued eating, Belphie continued sleeping, and Satan continued reading for the sole purpose of poisoning Lucifer, you were sure.Â
About thirty minutes passed before you heard the door to the Hall of Lamentation creak open. Â
âNo way!â Asmo squealed, a shutter sounding before Mammon could sprint to the couch and swat the D.D.D. from his freshly manicured hands.
Your jaw hit the floor as you looked up at the second born, at the condensation dripping down the can of soda that he thrust in your face. A petulant pout only brightened his blush, the way his eyes looked anywhere but you. The red tint to his skin darkened as his brothers laughed, jeered, teased him. Â
The least you could do was offer him some praise. You smiled with all your teeth, âThanks Mammon! The jinx is lifted.âÂ
He scowled, waving off your gratitude with an unnecessarily noisy exhale. With his newfound freedom, he instantly started pestering Asmo, critiquing his most recent Devilgram selfies. As your heart swelled with affection, the words in your textbook falling on blind eyes too occupied by the tiniest movements of your family, you felt completely at ease. Â
You didnât think you needed to elaborate, to clarify that you had used your pact and that there was no real magic behind the jinx.Â
However, when you entered the House of Lamentation two weeks later, you realized you had been very wrong.Â
The living room was a disaster, pillows tossed this way and that, candle wax oozing across something that looked suspiciously like a summoning circle. Splintered wood littered the carpet, broken chairs in a mangled pile next to the hearth. You were pretty sure you could smell something burning. Â
You nearly dropped the bag of groceries in your arms, Beel stock still at your side. One look at your shopping buddy told you he had no idea what was going on, concern blazing to life in his purple eyes.Â
âLucifer?!â He called out, immediately seeking reassurance.Â
Instead of the eldestâs smooth drawl, you were met with an incomprehensible shriek from somewhere in the kitchen. A clatter of pots and pans. A crash. Â
Belphie came sauntering into the room, nodding in greeting. âThe jinx didnât work.âÂ
âWhat?!â You gawked, surveying the damage to the room, âWhat is going on?!âÂ
âHe could still talk!â Satan fumed, stomping out of the kitchen with his bony tail lashing back and forth, âSo I cursed him, but then that asshole reflected it, and it hit Asmo instead.âÂ
Sure enough, a completely drenched Avatar of Lust was next to appear, his mouth moving a mile a minute and yet, not a single sound to be heard. He tossed his hands in the air, hissing something fierce before flicking a wet strand of hair from his face. Â
âAnd Asmo tried to charm Mammon to speak for him,â Satan was still ranting, âbut Mammon tried to charge him for his services, which then set Levi off about repayment with interest.âÂ
You hugged the groceries tighter to your chest, squeezing your eyes shut as you realized you knew exactly what was happening in the kitchen. You heard the roar, the rumble of the houseâs foundation, the continuous rush of water drowning out twin shouts you had heard far too many times before.Â
But not as many times as the one voice that rose above them all. Â
âMAMMOOOON?!âÂ
You winced. Youâd have to buy your first a Devil Cola later. Â
*ă»ăă»*:.ă.*.ă.:*ă»âă»ăă»*:.ă.*.ă.:*ă»âă»ă

When I see people fighting with darklina shippers I wonder what they took from the Shadow and Bone trilogy. And I don't mean the basic things like "he's a bad person". I mean the fact the story is at it's core a story on how different people process the struggles of war, and the outcome of their actions while doing so.
I wonder if they understand malina is not the good, healthy ship, but rather the result of two very young orphans who lost everything and everyone else and bonded on an unhealthy level, to the point where Alina is willing to give up parts of herself to fit Mal's insecurities.
It's not meant to be cute and fluffy. It just is. And in that sense, I wonder if they actually look at the darkling as the full character that Leigh worked her butt off to portray, past the "ewwww, this man is problematic". Especially in times like right now, where genocide and "how far is too far when you are responding to aggression" are being openly discussed by everyone.
Sure, it's easy to reduce the darkling to this toxic abuser. It fits a box you can check and not think about it later, but I find that to be a disservice to Leigh. So many of you are old enough to think about what makes a character tick, and the context that the story is giving you, regardless if you find the characters' actions justifiable or not, and I see so little of that nowadays in every fandom. Where is y'all's media literacy? Comprehension skills? The ability to reflect on such a complex universe as is the grishaverse?
People are allowed to ship the two characters that are opposite sides of the same coin, and grieve over the boy the darkling was and the man he could have been, before the weight of war destroyed him.
Alina certainly did.

I think that every comprehensive anti-zutara argument should try to answer a very crucial event, and that's Zuko's "I'm sorry (...)" to Katara in the Crystal Catacombs in the Crossroads of Destiny.
Because, why did Zuko do this? We've seen before that he's very unpleasant or even hostile towards people he doesn't know or doesn't care about (and even towards people he does care about). At this point in time, he still harbours a desire to return to the Fire Nation and is still capable of attacking the Avatar as soon as he lays his eyes on him. He did start to attempt to settle into his "Lee" persona in the Earth Kingdom but that persona is irrelevant when he comes face to face with Katara, someone who knows exactly who he is and who he already fought against with all he had. Someone he already insulted and griefed.
He is empathetic, but he instinctively shows it only in his facial expressions that he's clearly unaware of, and in extremely tense, critical moments such as when his ship's helmsman almost fell to his death, or when Zhao got pulled by the Koizilla. Katara had just started verbally attacking him, and based on everything we've seen thus far, it's entirely believable that Zuko might have just sat in silence, brooding as a response to her. They were trapped, sitting in a stable moment with nothing around them happening. She wasn't in danger.
And if an argument says that this indeed was an OOC moment for him, that creates a whole cascade of other problems if it's removed: it would basically affect the entire rest of the plot. There would be no shock of him betraying our heroes, there would be no tension/relief that Katara still has the magical healing water, Zuko wouldn't have known that the Avatar surely survived thanks to that water, who knows what the gaang and Zuko's dynamic would have been at the Western Air Temple if Katara wasn't locked in a state of feeling deeply wounded by his betrayal. Aang wouldn't have had a reason to get frustrated as intense as he had when he saw the scene in Ember Island Players, and he might not have done what he called himself stupid for afterwards.
Something compelled Zuko to overcome his broodiness and apologize to Katara, subconsciously probably for all his previous behaviour towards her as well (the talk about being marked, and lately thinking about being able to make his own choices definitely is a reference to his choices and behaviours from before). This apology isn't directed towards Aang, as he lunges towards him the instant he sees him, even though Aang had asked him for friendship months ago.
Add to this Zuko's suspicious comments and behaviours towards her from before, especially in the North, and it becomes pretty difficult to argue that he didn't have some kind of feelings for her. But I mean. What's the problem here? Everything in canon could still stay the same, identical, just with the added undertones of a melancholic "what if".

LANGUAGE HEADCANONS
including the vegimals, also some pirate culture lore for kwazii ig
@calamaroo
BARNACLES
Barnacles learned basic English as an extracurricular when he was younger, but he only really learned it (and gained the accent) when he went to university in Manitoba (polar bear capital of the world and the university works by, with, and for indigenous people with a lot of foreign people coming to study). he's got a similar thing with the speaking Russian and I'm gonna steal the specific language of inuktuk from you.
Also because the Arctic has so many different countries in it (although everyone in the Arctic considers themselves as just "the Arctic because wtf are u gonna do about borders? come through the snow storm and take me to another snowy white spot that looks exactly the same (to you) as the other snowy white spot I was in? FCK borders in the Arctic no one there gives a sht)
Anyways they do have a common sign language because I LOVE SIGN LANGUAGE AND WILL INSERT IT EVERYWHERE I CAN
------------------------------------------------------------
KWAZII:
Kwazii did grow up with a very mixed pirate crew, although A LOT of members were either English speaking or Japanese speaking predominantly , he also watched a lot of old kids anime as a kid in Japanese as well lol. not to mention the native island cultures they often interacted with including my very fictional "meowri" (they're sphinx cats with ttattoes and very loosely inspired by Polynesian cultures)...
Because of the general culture of the pirate crew being diverse (esp cuz of interactions on ports/other crews) there was also a lot slang and terms that was known shared and sort of used as a basic communication system for everyone.
so there'd be random Spanish and Arabic terms from the most niche origin points just being used commonly, and that includes a lot of outdated ones, cultural sayings, or words that just don't exist in a lot of other languages, and etc
not to mention that because of how old the pirate clan he was a part of was (founded in 1920s) and because of the different crews there's genuinely like hundreds and hundreds of them being in these isolated communities and even being born and raised in them. so there's a lot of words that cant even be found anywhere else, so kwazii does get frustrated when he cant express what he wants to say but he just... cant even translate the word
OR the words everyone else uses for it doesn't make any sense! it... it kinda makes him feel stupid sometimes
also because his clan did work with a lot of wild animals as non tech sources of information (you feed them and then they get u good info!! for strategy, spying, whatever! and no one even blinks an eye cuz its just a crow (an extremely intelligent bird)!) but uh... the problem with that is that well alot of animals uhhhh misunderstand stuff
so that means that all the names of locations, descriptions of wild animals, ways of naming ships, and all the information would've have to have been animal comprehension friendly. not to mention be more coded cuz of non-friend pirate clans and G O V E R N M E N T S- so I'd get some wacky name replacements for all sorts of things.... its really a mess XD, a beautiful mess but still
also explained why so many of the pirate tales about *insert scientific name of the episode's animal* was often over exaggerated with strange details... including ones pirates shouldn't even known. Like how could they know about sword fish making the water around them warm?
its because a lot of that info CAME from the animals... animals who... don't understand numbers and say things like "and it was 20 feet tall!" even if it was only 5.... because it FEELS that tall to the small animal yk? also not understanding science on a deeper level so its all explained in a strange way. Ofc the pirates DONT help the issue because they be exaggerating the hell out of their own stories-
yeah sure the snake was "long as the river itself" Cj and SURE it was 20 sharks or whatever and not THREE that chased you kwazii
lying in story telling is just a form of pirate love actually, so is pranks and pickpocketing but kwazii refrains lol... this turned into me yapping about the blorbo
-----------------------------------------------------------
BASIC COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
Speaking of the basic communication thing, the octonauts crew was trained on the main words for rescue related communication in more common languages like Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, etc and will take time to learn (or just refresh) before heading to a new location.
Because in my own au the communication abilities of the wildlife is a lot more limited based on their level of intelligence. so an orca would technically be bi lingual in their own orca language and be able to speak nearly identical to a humanoid person
also like I said before about sign language, BASIC PIRATE SIGNS THAT ONLY OTHER PIRATES KNOW AYYYYYYYYY
-------------------------------------------------------------
DASHI:
Australian Dashie my beloved<3 honestly she WOULD have learned several languages and learned more for/from her friends shes so capable and incredible fr. also FCK it MORE sign language! I headcanon shes CODA, which means you're the child of one or two parents who are both either hard of hearing or Deaf! so she actually was learning sign very VERY young from her mom <3 and well the rest of her family cuz they all knew it lol
--------------------------------------------------------
PESO:
peso is obviously bilingual and he's the BEST at the basic communications skills thing and most well versed cuz he deals with the most animals one on one, so he actually can communicate with pretty much all the animal creatures, even taking the time to learn some slang terms the animals might have learned so that they'll feel safer and more comfortable around him!
he also picks up on a lot of dialects especially since his cousins are so diverse
-----------------------------------------------
TWEAK:
as for tweak she knows a lot of Spanish actually because hey! Miami has A LOT Spanish speakers, so much that's its actually made an entirely new developing dialect unique to the area!
tweak actually understands a decent amount of Japanese and Russian but.... not for normal conversations, more like because of all the engineering studying she did! research papers, studies, articles, lectures, books etc etc... so she could probably have a full conversation about the physics and math of submarines in those languages but if you wanted to talk about like... how you're feeling today or what you want for dinner she can not answer that LMSO
INKLING:
inkling would absolutely know like SO many languages, I have the headcanon that the reason he actually met barnacles in that university was actually because he studied LAND SPECIES for years (and continues to enjoy observing his crew and doing behavioural experiments on them without anyone noticing, esp since they're so diverse and they're in such a unique social environment on the octopod! but shhhh don't tell the others it would ruin the natural response they have! he does this with love btw)
hes also literally mega brained so I'd be surprised if he didn't at least understand the basics of any language the octonauts knew purely based on his own curiosity....
SHELLINGTON:
hehe Gaelic go brrrrrr
also because I headcanon Shellie as being a a mix of Eurasian otters and small clawed Asian otters, I think he does have some Philippine heritage and knows some Tagalog but not that much and he's a bit sad about that in all honesty. his *ss would also know latin
VEGIMALS:
IVE BEEN PLANNING TO MAKE A VEGIMALESE LANGUAGE POST:
ok so basically their language is entirely unique and not just because of them being the only known vegimals:
the thing is that their vocal cords (or vegetable/fish equivalent) isn't really made for the languages they hear on the octopod... or English.
the thing is they are their own little pod, and during their earliest developmental years they spent the MAJORITY of their time only with eachother or with shellington, what this means is that while some of the verbal and auditorial cues they have is just innate to vegimal understanding- (and also had difficult time replicating sounds shellington made, while it being easier to replicate a word one of the other vegimals made)
they quite literally made their own words for a lot of things while talking with eachother, before shellington had even realized! a lot of their language development did formulate very similarly to english (and Gaelic) because that's what they were hearing from shellington!
as they continue to grow and get older (they're really only about like 11 to me) their English has actually improved a lot, because they've learned how to mimic the others better, that's how they learned that the vegimals still used a lot of the literal baby talk words that shellington used with them while they were growing up, but just in their own original language
not to mention a lot of their language does have a lot of the meaning derived from the enunciation, tone, rhythm, and etc... so that means its a bit harder for those who just.. don't have the built in brain biology to distinguish those sounds to understand them
ofc shellington did literally raise them so its much much easier for him to understand because (whether he realizes it or not) he was actually learning the language AS they developed it! ofc over the years the other octonauts have actually started to subconsciously pick up on the meanings of those more subtle language features of vegimalese, and combined with knowing the vegimals slang/phrases, and the vegimals learning how to replicate more and more English ones, their understanding of the vegimals only keeps increasing
but to anyone else who isn't an octonaut its.... kinda like hearing a lil guy yip yip a bunch of gibberish and then everyone else in the room going "oh yes of course! that's a great idea Tototofrit! and don't worry, well make sure our fish friends aren't scared as we perform your very clever and crafty plan!"
also my friend said I can pull off a decent vegimal accent so if anyone wants any tips lmk (I would stim in vegimalese in middle school btw LMSO but I did learn a decent amount on how they pronounce things and their speech patterns... still working on perfecting it but I got some starter tips LOL)
also the reasons halibeet and pikato don't show up as much as the other vegimals is because they're just genuinely more introverted, halibeet and pikato do enjoy each other's quiet company tho (as well as the other vegimals, but they're really more homebodies who just aren't as into the whole adventure stuff)

WELCOME TO THE FOREST AU!
Or the continuation of the first post (you can read it to understand more!)
Remember that I suck at writing stuff, so if something is bad written you know is for that
Okok, let's go to with the rest of the characters, which are a bunch and have a lot of lore with them
FOREST CAST
Let's start with this
-> Gustavo

Yeah, he's a gnome, I know thats pretty basic and that's why I decided to go with it.
Gustavo lives in the forest in a Gnome Village, he work as a chef next to other gnomes, deliverys stuff with Brick and has a normal life, well, not that normal. I decided to add a little more to his character

TahDah! He's a Were-Rat! I also know that is also basic, but I don't really care.
Gustavo transform into a rat during full-moon night, and during this form he's more rat that gnome. He act like an animal, youknow, walks in four legs, rummage through the garbage, bites, he's one of the reason Peppino has problems slepping, of course only when he in this form. Also he's able to understand Brick in his rat form, which is usefull since Brick has to take care of him while like this.
-> Brick the Rat

THE GIRL!!!! From the list, she is the only character that has the same design that the original.
She's still loyal, smart, also she's strong. Helps Gustavo with the deliverys and with cooking somethimes, she also help him when he's in his Were-Rat form, trying to make sure he doesn't do anything he will regret later. She's also pretty good friends with the rest of the animals in the Gnome Village
-> Hazel

Here is Noisette! Or Hazel here, she's called like that cuse it didn't make sence call her Noisette in the AU.
Hazel lives in the forest, likes to hang out in Vigilante's cabin or in the Gnome Forest. Everyone knows her, but not because she's a social person, everyone knows her cuse she is the Guide of the Forest.

THAT'S RIGHT, I INVENTED A SPECIES FOR THIS AU.
This is actually Hazel true form, the human look is only a disguise so humans can see her, people cannot see her during her true form. Hazel is a Guide, which are creatures that guide humans who get lost in the forest to the exit, because of this Hazel know pretty well the forest itself and everyone who lives in it. Even with this she still gets bored because no one gets lost in the forest, so whetever she sees a new person she inmediatly start follow them around, she's curious by nature too. Nothing more to add, she's still silly, dummie and chatty.
-> ???

This is the Fake Peppino of the AU! For now we would call them ???, mostly cuse is kinda lore accurate and I'm still deciding a way to refer to them maybe i will call him Bruno idk
This guy is a Spirit, the oldest one actually. They speak the language of the trees, which means only other Spirits, The Guide, The children of The Forest and The first Tree can understand them, that's one of the reason their name is complicated, cuse is hard for humans to pronounce it. They also understands english, they're just unable to spoke it. This guy is one of the reason Peppino can't sleep, since he moved near The Forest, this spirit fell a lot of curiosity for him and since then has tried to see more about the human's life, not knowing they're making the situation worse.
-> Roothead or The Youngest Brother

Remember when I mention The Children of The Forest before? Well here we have it, the Youngest brother. You can call him The red Brother too.
Roothead was born from The Forest next to his brother and they were both raised by Granma. Roothead discoverd that there was a human near The Forest, so he decided to choose him as one of the choose ones, did he care about all the nightmares he gave him to that human? Not really, he should be happy cuse now he can see all there weird creatures that are way far from his comprehension. Anyways he likes to see what Peppino and his friends are gonna do with this new 'power' Rootface give him.
-> Rootface or The Oldest Brother

And here is The Older Brother, you can also call him The yellow Brother.
Like Roothead, Rootface born from The Forest and was raised by Granma. Unlike his brother, he prefers to not get involve with humans. He's always trying to stop Roothead from doing stupid things but cannot always stop him, for example, the new human who lives near the forest. Rootface doesn't think Peppino is a good candidate for been a Chosen one, so he tries to convince Granma on revoke him that ability. For now, it isn't working.
-> Granma or The first Tree

Yeah, Granma is a fucking tree here. She conserves the same personallity as in the game, that means she's kinda sweet and kinda like a bitch.
Granma is the First Tree that ever gain a Spirit, she's is consider the mother of The Forest and raised the Children of The Forest. She's the one who chose The Vigilante to be a Chosen one and also the one who permited Roothead chosing Peppino to becoming one. Even if his oldest grandchildren keep telling her to revoke that power from Peppino, she's convinced he has something to contibute to The Forest
-
There we go, all the characters from the AU, or at least the ones I already have drawn lol. In a future I will draw other characters that are not that important in the plot, like Gerome and John or the Gnome villages.
Thanks so much for reading this shit, I know it sucks but I'm happy to finally show something about my AU. Hopefully I will be able to work on the comic and show everything I have planned <3
With all that said
WELCOME TO THE FOREST AU!

Snape never actually suffered abuseâthatâs just fanon)) No one ever hit him, and his father wasnât an alcoholic. But people keep going on about how âhe had awful parents,â when the only evidence is a single argument we see once
Itâs called basic literary interpretation and text comprehension for dummies. I mean, I donât think Rowling, in a childrenâs book, needs to explicitly show his parents beating each other up for readers to understand the scene. If the author presents a very specific moment where, from the protagonistâs perspective, thereâs a huge man yelling while his small child is hiding and trembling, does she really need to put up a neon sign to explain whatâs happening? Does she need to explicitly state that Severus was in an abusive household? Have you ever read a book that doesnât spell everything out for you, or are you just missing a few neural connections? Just asking. Because the day you start reading books for adults, which have even more subtle subtexts, youâre going to be left clueless for half the story.
Rowling put that scene there for a reason, and itâs to show that Severus came from an abusive home. We all interpreted the same thing when reading it, and if thereâs a widespread consensus, itâs because she did it well and the message got through. If you canât put two and two together, thatâs not my problemâitâs an issue with your cognitive development. Rowling also included the scene where Snape is wearing his motherâs clothes for a reason: to make the reader understand that if the kid had to wear them, itâs because his family had no money. And Rowling specifically makes Snape tell Lily, âMy father doesnât like anythingâ so that we understand Tobias is a man who is always in a bad mood, angry, and has a really nasty personality. She doesnât need to spell it outâsheâs showing it. Itâs called show, donât tell.
And to top it all off, Rowling herself said in an interview (and Iâm putting this last because we may or may not consider it canon, though it doesnât really matter since the canon itself already provides plenty of evidence) that Tobias didnât hesitate to hit Severus with a belt when he thought it was necessary.
So, not fanon at all. I donât know if the problem some of you have is that you havenât actually read the books or that you have the reading comprehension skills of a zygote, but what you just said is utter nonsense that the books themselves contradict.

bro i'm tired of seeing the most brainrot takes on arcane, especially relating to vi like "erm... she's a cop now... thats problematic...đ„"
holy fucking shit thats actually like the whole point. like the whole point of her character is to show the bending of morals that can happen in a person under certain circumstances, and in this case the circumstances are that her sister is a legit terrorist. (im also not anti jinx btw i luv her too)
also, she isn't fucking real. applying the same ethics to fictional characters that we do to real life people is never a good way to process media. and liking vi as a character does not automatically mean you love cops. christ. like am i crazy? is this not common sense?
also, i feel like with the reveal that she's an enforcer, people just automatically forgot all the character development that she went through the entire show, like she obviously does not just automatically become #1 enforcer/piltover lover.

christ, look at her and tell me that's the face of someone who's absolutely pumped to be an enforcer. like have we all just forgotten who vi is as a character? and if you are genuinely clutching your pearls over the fact that vi is an enforcer now, i'm sorry to say that you just don't know league lore cuz this was always gonna happen. like she's a cop in the damn game i don't know what you expected.
also, arcane has always been explicitly very anti-police brutality/ anti- oppression in it's themes. i mean, it isn't spoon fed to you, and it doesn't portray everything as black and white, just how nothing is black and white in real life, but it is very good at getting these themes across. do yall genuinely think it has thrown that all away and is now a super pro establishment alt right copoganda? NO! obviously not! and that isnt what vi as a character is here to represent.
also i saw some rando on here dissing vi, and then said that SILCO is a better person?! and dont get me wrong, i fucking love silco, he's so cool to watch and is an endlessly interesting character, but are we as a society really gonna pretend that the drug lord who floods poor neighborhoods with drugs for is own personal gain is the morally superior character? sometimes i feel like you guys did not learn basic reading comprehension. like these are very simple concepts to grasp i'm afraid.
ok im done thanks 4 reading :) i had to rant a little lol

Danny
Always have to keep you guys guessing ;) so this one is veeeeery different from my normal content, but I figured Iâd put something tamer to balance out the upcoming Pt. 2 to that Thread story. Itâs a bit long, but I didnât feel like keeping two concurrent multi-parters. Let me know what you think!
=============
âSo, itâs the necklace?â I asked the professor at the university. It was a wonder I was able to keep up with even half of the lecture that had just transpired.Â
âSomething like that.â The professor replied back to our small group. âWeâre all just a sea of electrical impulses. With this computer model, we can accurately track and mimic the exact electrical shocks needed to replicate a mind. Of course, the mind is so much data, the transfer-the upload needs to be instantaneous with an equivalent download- the university doesnât give us enough grant money for computers that can store that much data, much less secure it. So, we needed biological means of storage. Thatâs why thereâs an even number of participantsâ.
The room was utterly confused. For one, there was definitely an odd number of participants. Dr. Cohn was never known for dumbing down complex concepts, but even the smartest kids in class seemed stumped the past few hours. Maybe he didnât have to go in that level of depth for his experiment.
Our group was a mix. It seemed like a sampling of the very best of the class, and a few average performers. I did find it weird they offered extra credit to students that probably didnât need it. Sticking out like a sore thumb was Chad. He was the school quarterback, though no one was sure for much longer, as he was on academic probation. I couldnât help but speculate with Kat, a top performer, on his placement. Combining our limited knowledge on the students in our class, and the schoolâs football team, we landed on this being some sort of extra credit that the university probably forced on poor Dr. Cohn. Ever the nosy one, Mackenzie piped in. âOf course theyâd try to save their star quarterback. I heard 3 professors already quit trying to bring up his GPA. This is basically his last shotâ. Â
And then there was Danny. Part of that âvery bestâ group. Unlike the other students in the room, he seemed to take in the professorâs whole lecture and was deep in thought. His face lay still, serene. But I could see the intelligence behind his eyes spinning to life. I always liked when he did that, like he was chewing on an idea before spitting out the most brilliant insights. Or maybe I just like how the corner of his mouth would turn up into a small smile when he finished thinking things through. I caught myself staring again, thanking my luck that no one had seen. Mackenzie laughed a little behind me. I sighed, laughing a small defeat. Almost no one had seen.Â

âSo it basically swaps our brains?â Danny inquired. He looked around the room, gauging our comprehension. That was when it clicked for me. He took note and let out a small smile. I smiled back. That was the other thing I liked about the guy. He always seemed to want everyone to succeed. This wasnât the first time heâd thoroughly condense a difficult topic into a quick word or phrase the class could understand. His eyes smiled whenever he could recognize concepts âclickingâ for people and I saw it do the same as my other classmates- even Chad- figured it out. I recoiled a little, from a nudge from Mackenzie. I sighed again, airing a âthank youâ her way. I had been staring again.
âNo, nothing like that! Could you imagine how difficult an operation like that would be? All this does is swap your mind.â Aaaand just like that, we were back to confusion. Danny smiled though.
âGot it. So your brainâs the hardware, your mindâs the software. The necklaces do a switcheroo and then new hardware, same software- or, vice versa, I suppose.â Back on track.
âWait, how much of âmeâ is in the hardware? Like my memories?â I blurted out, immediately growing red. That seemed to have garnered an approving smile from Danny. I grew redder.
The professorâs eyes lit up. âNow youâre thinking like a scientist.â He laughed before shrugging. âWhoâs to say⊠we are running an experiment after allâ. Dr. Cohn always was a messy one.
âSo, uh, how long is it supposed to last?â Mackenzie asked.
âThatâs the fun of it, once weâre paired, the switch can go for as little or as long you as want!â We. That threw me off a little. I caught his glance to Chad. âDonât worry, Iâll be a part of this experiment too.â The professor said, with a smile that felt too wide. âDonât forget to record your notes and thoughts into this log book. For privacy, theyâve been password protected- weâll reconvene this little group in a year and just draft up a summary of your experiences from these books.â
There was an obvious question everyoneâs mind. Thankfully, Kevin asked it. âSo whoâs swapping with who?â
The professorâs eyes lit up in excitement. âWeâve all been paired, randomized of course. Iâll leave the pairings to figure out when theyâd want to swap. Just put on your necklaces at 6pm tonight and start your log books. After that, whenever either of you squeezes your necklace, the swap will ensueâ. From the way the professorâs eyes kept darting to Chad, something told me it hadnât been entirely random.
I thought through the possible pairings. Kevin was kind of cute, I guess. Though I wasnât sure if it was just the airport effect with how limited our group size was. Kat or Mackenzie would just be weird. Mackenzie especially- that girl knows a little too much about me and lord knows what sheâd do behind my wheel. Running down the list of people, there was Chad. Of course, who wouldnât want to be in Chadâs shoes- I had to dispel a dirty thought that passed my mind. Everyoneâs probably thinking it. The professorâs body wouldnât be too bad either, I could always just pressure the faculty into giving me better grades, maybe boost the grades of my friends. And then there was Danny. Danny. My heartrate shot up instantly.
Sitting in my dorm room, I looked at the clock with a bit of fear. â5:55 pm,â it read. I took a few deep breaths, trying to calm my nerves. â5:59 pmâ. Nope. There was nothing calm about this. I closed my eyes shut, as I felt the necklace whir a little. Looks like someone else already squeezed it.Â

=============
âLog book 1:Â
<3
It was Danny. Holy fuck, I got to be in Danny.â

I stared at the journal entry. That was all I could manage to write with my shaking hands. I could hardly believe it. A lifetime can change in 5 minutes, apparently. My heart was still beating and my face still flushed when we switched back. He had a soccer game so our first meeting had to be short.Â
My first minute was just looking down at my new Danny-worn hands, breathing through his lungs, inhaling as much as I could of his room. I wanted to commit this man to memory. My logic-or, Dannyâs logic perhaps, told me there would inevitably be more swaps to come, but my mind wouldnât have it. Whatever piece of Danny I could get, however minuscule, I wanted to stretch every moment infinite.
I felt a sense of guilt wash over me, as my new Danny-worn package began to harden when I realized he was in soccer gear. I tried to shake off the feeling- I couldnât do that to him. Then came the text. I recognized the number of course, it was my old bodyâs. âHey man, glad to see weâre partnersâ. My heart stirred. âItâs Danny, but you probably already knew thatâ. To see him text me so casually froze me in place. âAnyways, I do have a game coming up, mind if we switch back?â I couldnât even bring Dannyâs hands to answer himself. âIâll take that as a yesâ.

Zzzip
And just like that, I was back. My hand clinging to my chest, breaths ragged.Â
Wait, Fuck. Was I still hard in his body when we switched back?

âLog book 7:
Met up today. Joint gym day.Â
Gym feels better in Dannyâs body. Unsure if exercise has a different effect on peopleâs bodies, or if itâs tied to our minds. Seems to be a lag in my emotions.â
Iâm not really one to be consistent with exercise. I set the book down, and relocked it, panting as I had in our first switch, but this time due to Danny working my body to the brink.
I think he noticed, because he apologized profusely when I slumped in the bench to catch my breath in the locker room.
I canât believe I had agreed to it. Danny wanted to test the effects of exercise with different bodies. He stated he wanted to see what it was like doing routine exercises in a different body. Does the body retain that physical memory? Or is it the mind? I only agreed because it was Danny. So, there I was, in the school gym staring at the door like a fish out of water.Â
I felt a reassuring hand on my back before my ears immediately shot red when I realized whose hand it was. âDo you have your log book on hand? Should probably write down notes immediately after the switchbackâ. I immediately panicked at thought that he wanted to compare notes, thinking back to my first entry but he seemed to have caught on to my thought process and immediately dismissed the idea. âIt wouldnât make sense to taint the data with outside factors. Danny was probably the only person that fully understood the professorâs entire experiment so I took his word for it.
When we swapped, I had to focus on not instantly growing hard. For someone seemingly so bookish, the guy was surprisingly fit. Walking to the treadmill, I felt every muscle brimming with power. My first run in his body. Euphoric. Danny was a well-oiled machine. Every component moving in tandem. Lungs drawing in and out powerful gusts of air. Eyes staring me in the mirror, furrowed in powerful determination, and legs gliding with a grace that did not diminish the power behind each foot. I lost myself in the exercise, content to just being inside his body, guided by his body. I finished the run with a heavy pant, knowing full well Iâd be hard beyond belief at what lay before me. I eyed myself in the mirror, in sweat-laden body of my crush. The scent was indescribable. Like a pleasant musk basking in the damp earth. Was it always this good? Was this how other people felt when they exercised? I twirled the necklace around Dannyâs neck, making sure to not squeeze, mentally thanking whatever gods there may be for this experience.
I looked back at Danny, in my body. His running form was a bit clumsy, but there was a confidence in them that I didnât often see in myself. Maybe a trick of the light, or residual feelings from the run I just had but I was captivated. I honestly looked almost cute like this.Â
He finished, panting before immediately pulling out his book and writing a few notes. He beamed back at me, pointing at the necklace. Even in my body, that smile was unmistakably his. I smiled back, ready to swap once more.
Zzzip
Weird. I still felt the infatuation. I looked back at the body I had just inhabited, still feeling the butterflies in my stomach. It was Danny so I was used to those, but not immediately after a swap. The past few times it always took a second or two to readjust. Danny looked at me, a bit uncomfortable. No doubt it had been from the grave face I was making. I shook my head, not wanting to worry him. Or worse, force a premature end to this experience. âItâs nothing, just a hell of an exercise hahaâ.
This may be a bit of a problem.

=============
âInteresting, and youâre sure itâs residual feeling?â Said a slightly disinterested Chad, eyeing his dreamy biceps.
âYes, when I.. uh.. felt angry in his body and switched back, my body did too.â Â
âWell it is a swap, of course so your mind returning to its body would feel the same things it feltâŠâ The professor in chadâs body spoke in a slightly faraway tone, like there was something heâd rather be doing. âThough, it shouldnât be this instant. Itâs not physically possible unlessâŠâ
I winced, worried for the worst and hoping to remain Dannyâs partner.
âThis might be a bit of an issue if those necklaces are defectiveâŠâ He then mumbled something about permanent effects on the mind. âIf they are, weâd have to stop the entire experiment. It wouldnât be right-â The professor caught a glimpse of Chadâs body in the reflection of his door before looking back at me. âLook, maybe just limit the swaps to low pressure situations, and try to avoid high-emotion situations in case your âresidualâ hypothesis is correct. Cause if that were true, it would mean you leave a little of yourself every time you swap.â
âGot it, professorâ.
âMaybe keep this side effect a little secret for now. We wouldnât want the others worrying and tainting the data,â Chadâs body spoke in an authoritative tone as his hands sauntered below the desk. âOh, and please close the door on your way outâ.

âLog book 50:
Pain.âÂ

We had been swapping fairly frequently, despite the professorâs warning. Danny was a drug I couldnât shake. The guy was my kryptonite and he had no idea. Everytime we swapped, every moment we shared, I couldnât bring myself to tell him about the professorâs words. Every swap back, I could feel my heart beating as wildly as my first time, stomach churning pleasantly. It was like a wave of sweetness whenever I had a chance to be Danny. Then, the guilt came soon after.
Danny seemed to like the spontaneity. Eventually, we settled on free-switching, aside from classes. Some days, Iâd randomly switch and my eyes would focus on my homework, completed with a little smiley face drawn on the corner. I tried that little trick with him once, only to get a text back of his graded assignment, scored uncharacteristically low for the top performer, followed by another text âNice try anyway lolâÂ

âLog book 190:
I hate you.â
Zzzip

âDanny, is something wrong?â The shock of the situation stopped me from initially processing anything I was seeing. My clumsy hands. I had been fumbling with my collar, when I accidentally initiated a swap. A wave of embarrassment hit, and then anger. Seething, bottomless anger.
I almost dropped the flowers Dannyâs body had been handing her. Without explanation, I quickly squeezed the necklace to send me back.
Zzzip
I sat in stunned silence for a second, before the anger drew me back to my thoughts.
Who was I angry at? Of course it was a girl. He had to have been dating around. It was presumptuous to even think we were anything more than partners in a crazed professorâs experiment. And yet, I was still angry. Irrationally angry at Danny for not picking up on the hints, maybe angry at the professor for dragging me into this mess in the first place. But most of all, I was angry at myself.Â
I felt the buzz of a text, ears still heated. Danny again. âYou ok?â Â
I sighed as reasoning took over and anger transformed into sadness. I wrote a quick note in the log book, then pulled my phone up before texting back. âYeahâ.
âLol Claudia says hiâ, came a text back. I gritted my teeth, not wanting to impart any jealousy in my response, but I was soon stopped by another text.Â
âIf you wanted to meet my sister, you should have just asked lolâ.

âLog book 290
Iâm stupid. Iâm sorry. Iâm stupid. Iâm sorry.â
Iâm so sorry. I said to Danny in my head, as I slumped in my chair. Youâre so fucking stupid. I told myself. These past few months swapping back and forth with Danny had been a dream.Â
From something as simple swapping before brushing his teeth to even taking a class as him. I savored every single moment.Â
But as the experiment had been drawing to a close, and as I felt my time nearing and my guilt intensifying, other, less kind thoughts bubbled in my head.Â
What if I did âthatâ in his body. What if I did it while thinking of my own body. I gulped. Danny didnât know, and from what I could tell, he hadnât suspected a thing. âMaybe I could make him like me.â Even just saying it out loud felt like a taboo. I could just imagine Dannyâs disapproving face as I pondered corrupting our newfound friendship, and corrupting him at his core.
The devil on my shoulder continued. Weâve been swapping all this time. And he doesnât notice. My dick stirred. He wouldnât notice and you could train his body to fall in love with you.
No. No. I couldnât do that to Danny. I eyed the near approaching date on the calendar- the date the experiment would end- and I gulped again. I pulled up a photo of him.

Darkness gripped at my chest, as I pondered my next step. And then I squeezed.
âDanny, I love you and Iâm sorry.â
Zzzip
My heart, or rather Dannyâs, began to beat faster and faster. I pulled up a fairly difficult puzzle before I swapped, so I knew I had some time with his flesh before heâd try to swap back.
I gingerly pulled down his shorts, staring at his bulge hungrily. Then I slowly teased out his dick, moaning at the feeling of flesh touching flesh. Being in his body, having this level of access to Danny. I was hard instantly.
It felt almost macabre, seeing his flesh move to my every whim, forced to feel my feelings. I wanted to etch myself into him as much as possible, and with every pump I moaned my original bodyâs name. It took all of the restraint in Dannyâs body, which, apparently was a lot, to not burst. But one can only hold out so long, hearing oneâs crush moan their name in delirious ecstasy. I sang my name in his resonant voice one more time, before flashing instantly to my body and back to his.
Zzzip Zzzip
I released his sticky white seed in what felt like the first cum of my life. I suppose, in a sense, it was. I hoped that sealed it. Conditioning Danny to me. The swaps were imperceptibly fast, and I took the lack of delay in emotions as a sign of success.
Zzzip Zzzip
I released a breath in Dannyâs body I didnât know I was holding, basking in the afterglow before immediately realizing what I had just done.Â
Guilt came out of me drop by drop. As his tears began to leave their marks on his shirt, I slowly began to clean up. The pleasure of the situation still clung to me, as I mournfully switched back. Then came another gut-wrenching wave of sadness. Danny, Iâm so sorry.Â
I looked to the incomplete puzzle in front of me, laughing a little at his lack of progress to ease the sadness.
Then came another text from Danny. âDude, that puzzleâs impossibleâ.Â

âLog book 300:
Food definitely tastes different in a different body.â

âLook, just try them manâ Danny said with a smile, holding a fry in his hand. And the necklace in another.Â
Only a few short days left before the experimentâs end. I made no mention of that night, nor the professorâs words to Danny.Â
Danny had, in fact, been coming by more often. Prompting more hangouts, initiating more switches. I was elated every time he asked. I even caught a few longer glances from his body, marinating in pleasure at seeing this new side of Danny. However happy I had been, underlying it all was the guilt of my deed.
Danny again held the fry out expectantly. I laughed slightly. âHaha, fineâ.
Zzzip
I took a bite from his body. Yep, it was definitely a fry. My own body looked up at me, smiling a Danny-flavored smile before grabbing the half-bitten fry. âNow letâs control for this variable. Same fry,â he said, wiggling it in the air.
Zzzip
I stared at the fry covered in a bit of his saliva. Heaven. I looked back at him and nodded. As we parted ways, I couldnât help my smile from peeking through.Â
He was right, it did taste better on my end.
=============
âSo, weâre not getting paidâ? I asked Danny, as we sat in the table. He had a few wine glasses in front.Â
It had been a full year since the experiment first started. Despite the general weirdness from the other groups swapping, everyone had been relatively well adjusted. Except for Chad, or whatever heâd be called now. A swapped Kat couldnât help but spill the beans. Apparently, the professor had no obligation to offer the guy extra credit. He specifically targeted the quarterback for his experiment. Whatâs worse, heâd apparently created a newer version of the necklace. One that could overwrite and transmit. Chadâs frat brothers mentioned he was offered another credit for participating in a second experiment for this new necklace. After that, no one had seen either person. The pair had mysteriously disappeared, leaving the school scrambling to cover up everything. All most of us knew was one day we suddenly had perfect grades retroactively added for the past year, along with a very scary letter prompting a signature.Â
âThe university isnât going to do anything about this.â He said. I was still skeptical as I slowly eyed one of the wine bottles that once graced former Dr. Cohnâs shelf. âItâs the least they could do for all those, ethics violationsâ. He pulled the cork with a satisfying pop, a mischievous gleam in his eye as he handed me a glass. âNow câmon, try thisâ.Â

I suppose alcohol had a way of loosening me up. âSoâŠ. weâre not getting paidâ? I asked again, sarcastically this time. It had been a year, so talking to Danny felt easy. I thought back to my log book, fully intending on burning the thing. Danny shook his head.
âHard to put a price on crimes against humanity. Or, something like thatâ he laughed. âThe university just said to dump everything and basically forget that experiment ever happened.â
I couldnât help but laugh as well. I shrugged, knowing money or even perfect grades for a year held no candle to the experience of a lifetime I just had with Danny. I was afraid of the answer, but it had to be asked. âWhat should we do with these things?â I asked, looking at the necklace still gracing his beautiful neck. His eyebrows raised as he saw the same necklace gracing mine.Â
âI mean, by now, youâre pretty used to it, right?â He asked with an almost pleading look in his eye. There was something bugging him. I watched as he fiddled with his feet. âMaybeâŠâ His ears turned bright red. It was riveting finally seeing this side oh him. More than that, it was downright cute. âM-Maybeâ he stammered again. Danny took a deep breath to calm himself, though his scarlet face told all. âMaybe we can keep. Um. Swapping. Sometimes, sometimes I like being you, and sometimes I kind of like when youâre me.â He looked at me and smiled weakly, trying to change the subject. âA-Anyway, you need a place to stay next year, r-right? It kind of feels like weâve already been roommates these past 12 months, whatâs another 12?â His sweet words did nothing the dampen the guilt I felt in my betrayal. In any other circumstance, Iâd have died happy just hearing that confession from him. Instead I could only think back to the professors words. I did live, at least partially, in Danny throughout this past year. It felt like a betrayal of myself to not come clean.
âDanny, listen. I think I need to tell you first, in your bodyâŠâ My breath hastened, and I felt my stomach churn. How do you tell a guy what youâve done with his body- *in* his body? Dannyâs face frowned in concern as my bubbling emotions seemed to knock him out of his quick spell of shyness.
He smiled a little. âLook man, whatever youâve done in my body, Iâve probably done too.â His smile widened. âYour body is mine, my body is yours. Call it evenâ. More words that would have swept me off my feet, had I not been confessing. More torture ensued.
âI went to the professor about it a few months ago and never told youâ I continued. I was practically holding back tears. âOur necklaces were bugged, I thinkâ.
âThe professor saidâŠâ I gulped. âIt was possible that when we switch, our minds donât come through all at once.â Now tears did begin to swell. âYou know how itâs supposed to take a second for your emotions to catch up. Well, when we switch, I still feel the same emotionsâŠâ. I gulped. âSince day 1, I think Iâve overwritten your, um, preferencesâ. Dannyâs poker face felt like a dagger in my heart. Itâs a face I often made in his body when I was in deep thought, so I knew he had to have been processing to the same conclusion. I could practically see the gear turning in his head. Click.
Face still an enigma, Danny waited a moment and then asked a simple question. âWhen did you tell the professor?â Click.Â
I sniffled as I laid it bare in front of him. â5 months ago. Danny, Iâm sorry! I dunno, I just thought maybe⊠maybe if we kept switching, if our minds kept being in each otherâs bodies. Maybe if a little piece of how I felt kept lagging behind, you might have-â Now the gear was fully spinning and I saw the realization hit his face. I had no idea what he was going to do. Punch me? Maybe. Run away in disgust? Likely. Instead, Daniel had done something equally surprising. His hand rested on my shoulder in a reassuring fashion. Then that same hand motioned me forward.
My memory of the next moment felt like a million moments in one. It was something so outside my realm of possibilities, my brain simply couldnât process. The whiplash hit my senses all at once. Sweet but a bit salty. A moment of quietness before the background sounds of the campus slowly drizzled back in. The scent of fresh laundry and damp earth. My eyes took even longer to adjust from black to red to an image slowly refocussing. Last was my brain, which had been stunned into silence. I sat back in shock, repeating the same phrase over and over in my head. Danny just kissed me.
He laughed, eyes twinkling and mouth pulled into a smile, beaming in the way that always made my heart swoon. âThat theoryâs bogus. Trust me. I havenât felt any differentâ. He smiled again, sheepishly this time, before fishing something from his backpackâs large pocket. He looked at the item in front of him, hand slightly shaking in hesitation before making his decision. Slowly, he held up his own log book, flipped to the very first page:
âLog Book 1:

Oh, also, I really hope that this point isn't news to anyone, but if you don't already have a basic understanding of what it means to develop information security, now is the fucking time.
Critically, I want to see people being responsible in how they interact with:
A) the dissemination of information and the correction or disruption of misinformation
B) privacy related or personal data (of themselves, but ESPECIALLY of others who you could unknowingly harm)
C) pictures and visual media
D) your bodies: not a good time to start leaving traces of yourself where they shouldn't be, e.g. blood, saliva, etc
E) triangulatory/tangential information (you know that guy who can tell where you are by the weather descriptions? That's an extreme example very few people can pull off, but you'd be horrified how little info I need about someone to correctly interpret whole sections of their personal history and data)
F) other people. If you have never formally done so, find a conflict resolution/group facilitation class with a local organizing group or community college. Start learning what healthy boundaries (flexible, but neither porous nor rigid) look like for you. Pick a communication style to cultivate so you can be consistent in how you navigate stressful moments. Figure out what it means to you to share space with others with intention. (And yes, there is no one way to do this, but every one of us will need to find our most secure version, whatever that is, ESPECIALLY those of us who are already vulnerable here due to past trauma, neurotype, TBI, healthcare/wellbeing needs, etc)
I'm a really open book in a lot of ways, and yall might rightly look at that and go "butts you're one to talk about infosec"
And yeah. Yeah. But like.
I know what you know. I made those choices on purpose or at the very least addressed the aftermath of the accidents with intention. I also know what I did to be protective of myself and my info, and you don't know those things. You should know how to do them for yourself though, because it will help you understand why I can have done what I've done over the years and still say this now.
It matters what people know. It matters how easy that knowledge is to revisit. It matters how much of that knowledge is heresay vs documented and verifiable. It matters what contrary information is ALSO known. It matters what interconnected information about OTHER PEOPLE is known. It matters when you haven't said anything at all versus when you said a bit versus when you said a LOT. It matters when you say a lot without saying anything at all.
Information gathering is about putting together puzzle pieces. It's slow work, and it involves a massive amount of resources to do comprehensively and at scale. Information security is about making the gathering process not worth the investment such that the gatherers give up before they are able to put together enough pieces to do real damage. This is what "need to know" means.
For example, in a healthcare practice, it is a HIPAA requirement that access to protected patient info be limited to those who have a clinically relevant reason for accessing it. This means that certain system credentials or permissions will reveal varying amounts of protected information about a person. While one MIGHT be able to put together enough puzzle pieces for certain minor information gathering from early stages (e.g. where someone will be a the specific time of their appt), one likely cannot identify deeper and more vulnerable levels of information (who is the appt with and what is it for?)
This kind of layered buffer is most important when people who AREN'T PERMITTED (permited as in able to do without effective correction/consequence, not permitted as in legally or appropriately authorized to do) to access this info are trying to access it. If someone is permitted (e.g. if person with the appropriate credentials/access permission discloses it voluntarily or if a subpoena is ordered, etc) then the level of access is less protective - they will typically simply access the level of info they need if they will be permitted to.
But there are further layers still of information security. For example, you can tie up a LOT of time forcing authorized bodies to refresh and specify their authorization over and over again, each time appropriately only providing the exact level of disclosure they have required of you. The more specific the information they are looking for, the easier it is to bury so deep down that they literally cannot access it even if they are looking right at it.
I was taught to write documentation "like at any time it could be read out by the patient in front of you, or by another provider asking us to justify a treatment, or in open court by order of a judge". For a year, my supervisor had me write four copies of every piece of documentation I ever made. My personal copy (burned upon completion of the billable note), my "soft note" that removed all protected/identifiable information from the narrative (e.g. names, ages, genders, specific diagnoses/conditions), my "hardnote" which removed anything "heresay" which had been self-reported by the patient unless I could professionally verify it), and lastly my billable note which I understood needed to offer "detailed justificstion" for the used (and named) interventions which cannot be used to work backwards and interpret the originating care conversation.
The only note that ever gets read by anyone but myself is the billable, because they others are never retained long enough to be seen by others, even if they do have the appropriate access. It becomes very difficult for someone to use the hard data they are capable of getting from me, voluntarily or by force, to actually confirm context. This is a similar principle when orhanizers compartmentalize need-to-information.
So start learning what it looks like to cordon off each layer of infosec you're about to implement in your life. What it will look like to grant someone access to a new layer.
Be responsible. We protect us.
#man i really hope i actually managed to make clear what i'm trying to say here#dogwhistles are hard when your workbook comes from three generations back lol

the most sympathy shen yuan had for abused slave child shen jiu was "speechless" lmao he literally never thinks about him again. doesn't spare a second to consider how he's using a former slave's body without his permission. this is the guy who canonically feels guilty for all sorts of things he can't control, like lbh having to go into the abyss.
so why does he feel guilty for one thing he can't control and not about another? bc he doesn't care about shen jiu or have sympathy for him.
the one thing he never angsts about is the goddamn slave who's life, name, and identity he inadvertently stole. shen yuan angsts about lbh falling into the abyss not because he has sympathy for everyone, but specifically bc he likes and cares about lbh. he is biased towards lbh. he doesn't consider how shen jiu, again a former slave, would feel about having his body be used against his will by shen yuan, bc he doesn't give a goddamn fuck about shen jiu. no, he's not compartmentalizing, bc we would see him try to keep those thoughts away, he just doesn't have them.
shen yuan had sympathy in your head, not in the text.
you have sympathy for shen jiu, but projecting it onto shen yuan doesn't mean shen yuan magically has it. he canonically does not demonstrates sympathy, he demonstrates surprise, shock, and on single moment of "huh, i guess he had a bad childhood," and then he moves the fuck on bc he couldn't care less.
if he cared even the tiniest amount, he would be a lot more goddamn careful with the body he's inadvertently occupying. not blow it up or let it be ripped open by demon cock over and over. shen jiu doesn't consent to any of that either btw, and that is still his body. not shen yuan's. just bc shen yuan is in it doesn't mean he has the right to do whatever he wants.
this such basic body autonomy that i can't believe it needs to be fucking said. no one has a right to another person's body, not even if they got in there by accident. goddamn pro life type argument to say shen yuan should do whatever he likes with a body that is not his own and will never be his own just bc he got trapped in there.
i get you want shen yuan to be this super duper nice perfect mary sue self-insert you can project onto but he just isn't that. his primary motivation is to save himself for fucks sake. he is selfish. his favourite character lbh is canonically a rapist. a fact he has no issue with even when it's said to his face. he's a flawed character. let him be fucking flawed! it's fine for him to enjoy life in the body of someone who did not consent and fine for him not to think twice about it.
let him be flawed.
and it's always this flaw of his, this lack of sympathy for the villain that people get hung up over. all his other flaws are fucking hilarious. but this one has people crying tears of blood. it makes perfect sense for shen yuan not to have sympathy. it makes sense for him to believe all the wrong rumours about shen jiu. bc shen jiu was the villain, and shen yuan wants to believe he was just pure evil, and lbh was pure good. there's certainly a stunning irony in the fact that you display he same failure of reading comprehension for shen yuan is the very one he displays himself lol. shen yuan was wrong about the villain, and thats fine for his character.
when shen yuan has sympathy for someone, he treats them like lbh. lbh crippled countless cultivators, he still nearly fucked over the whole world, he turned the OPM into a stick. shen yuan has no issue with lbhs darkness and violence, but his stans sure seem to shy away from it, and from shen yuan's glaring lack of interest in behaving in a moral manner. neither shen yuan or lbh are good people, and thats fine. that's what makes them interesting in fact, and yet they get sanded down into basic ass stereotypical "good guys who can do no wrong" by people who claim to love them.

one thing you should know about me is that I'm a little insane
all of the new bill cipher stuff and euclydia had sparked a lot of discussions about the nature of a 2D dimension, so now I have a very strong one sided beef with anyone trying to claim that "we, as 3D beings, can only see/perceive in 2D" and as a 3D being myself I have to disagree and if I don't voice my opinions in public I will lose my mind
so welcome to "magenta's trying to explain physics without actually knowing physics to anyone who's willing to listen"
so first of all, one major key of this debate is the difference between "see" and "perceive", because that can lead to some confusion
in my opinion there are basically 3 stages to "sight" (and any other senses): 1. the information the eyes gets (our retinas?) 2. the image our brains create from interpreting that information 3. us comprehending what we see
I personally think of "seeing" as at least level 2, but for the sake of this argument let's refer to seeing as level 1 and perception as 2 and 3 (separating them to perception and comprehension doesn't add much to the discussion) however I still think vision encapsulate the entire thing, so keep that in mind
if that's the case, I do understand why people claim that we can only "see" in 2D, because in a technical sense: one eye can only see a flat image
for example, if we have these 2 balls in front of us in a 3D space, we wont really be able to tell anything about their distance and size with just one eye
HOWEVER, and that's the thing I'm mainly getting at: we do have the ability to tell size and distance in real life! by this great thing calls "depth perception"
now this is not really a concept I can explain with images since they are inherently flat, but you probably know it already just think 3D glasses, VR, or even just look around in your room! our two eyes + our brain gives us the ability to tell the distance of things from us! you can theoretically map the objects around you on a 3D grid just from looking at them, and if that's not 3D vision and perception idk what is
well, actually, I did see a thing being argued that "3D vision means seeing all sides of an object + inside of it, which is what 4D creatures will see" so lets think about that for a second
this argument stems from the way we interact with the 2nd dimension
as all the flatlands lovers here know, when we look at a world of 2D creatures, we are able to see all of their sides, and their inside, so supposedly a 4D creature would be able to do the same for us
but that's where things gets interesting, so let's go deeper!
this usually comes up in order to say "this ability to see around and inside of an object defines what 2D vision is, and thus only 3D being can see 2D, while 2D beings can only see 1D" however, I don't think it has to do with sight at all! but rather with point of view and existing in a higher dimensional plane !
the special thing about us really is our ability to move on the Z axis and separate ourselves from the 2D plane, and thus get a fuller view! so this doesn't have anything to do with us "being limited to 2D" but rather with us being 3D creatures in a 3D world and 3D perception!!! so supposedly, a 4D creature would be in the same situation, having 3D retinas and an overall 4D vision and perception!
if we were to be on the flat plain along the other shapes, our vision isn't going to serve us much better than it does for the 2D creatures, the only additional thing we will be able to see is the Z axis, which isn't really relevant to 2D beings
so now raises the question: can 2D creatures see in 2D? don't they only see 1D? ( - a line ?)
I'm going to jump through some loops here so I need you to hold my hand and bare with me
lets say we have this triangular fella with one eye, the light information they are getting is linear, so basically a line (which is represented on the right)
now this is where I'm making a bit of a leap: will their vision have 2D depth? like we have?
think for a second of the way we see, technically, even the flat image our retinas see is based in some 3D: specifically, objects appear smaller as they are far away, lines wrap into a vanishing point in the horizon, stuff like that!
the 3D world around us is getting compressed into a flat image with perspective, which we can later decipher back into 3D using both our eyes !
and as you might have noticed, a similar thing is happening in our triangle friend's vision! even though both circles are the same size, the light blue circle is closer, and thus takes a much larger portion of their field of view!
unfortunately, as we have established before, while this is a result of depth, this isn't equivalent to depth perception, as our poor triangle cant tell anything about the distance of the circles! is that circle close to him? is that a giant far circle? who knows!
this is where having 2 eyes might help!
our other friend, the 2 eyed triangle, should in theory be able to have depth perception similarly to us, and thus perceive 2D visually!!
how specifically their brain interprets that information is beyond me, the changes in distance, size and angles/curves might be visible as color changes or even width
it's important to remember that since there's no defined "width" to the "line" of their vision, it's actually filling their entire field of view and perception of sight, so it's not like it's a line within a black void but more of the definition of everything, so when compared to our perception of sight it's something more like this:
and if you want to incorporate the idea of closer objects appearing larger in their perception, it might be something like this (for a bunch of random circles in different distances):
the main thing is, when we are trying to say 2D creatures can only see 1D, it's usually just because we think of "2D vision" as a matter of height and width, when it can actually just be depth and width, both of these are valid ways of representing 2 dimensions! because there are 2 dimensions represented ! it's just a matter of point of view!!
I don't think our ability to see 2D objects from all their sides at once is defining what counts as 2D vision, it's just a way to see it from further away, and without relaying on perspective I guess?
so I guess that's the thing really, the core of this discussion: does perspective count? I mean perspective is what makes the axis that's "forwards" accessible, distorting the size to substitute distance. supposedly, when we step back to look to look at a 2D world, we don't need any of that distortion, and we can easily see both the accurate size and the distance of objects, so does that mean our vision is superior? that it's actually true 2D?
in my opinion, the distortion of perspective doesn't take away from our vision, it's just a way to represent the forward axis! no matter how many dimensions you have, forwards is always the first dimension to exist, and while you are looking straight ahead at one dimension lower than you are, your over all vision consists of a stack of "straight ahead views" along the additional axis, which I consider as giving it it's missing dimension!!
trying to argue we can't perceive the world in the dimension we exist in doesn't make sense to me, we are 3D beings in a 3D world which we intuitively interact with! just like we can move around the 3D space and hear the direction sounds are coming from, I don't understand why vision should be limited to any less, and definitely not perception!
well that was fun! this is basically just a matter of semantics, but thinking and trying to analyze vision and different dimensions was just really interesting! and I hope it was interesting to read for you dear one person who read this! have a candy! đŹ hopefully now that I release these thoughts into the world they won't hurt me as much !! time to dissolve i guess !

How about this?
Where there any instances on canon (or in a midlly divergent timeline) you could see a character second triggering who didn't canonically, and what do you think the resulting altered power would be like?
really interesting idea!
Very obvious answer though. Single most likely character to second trigger who didn't is lisa. I wouldn't go as far as to say she should have triggered, because I think that's too far and kind of accusatory but she absolutely could have second triggered during Speck and not for a second would I think it was out of character or unfitting. I mean it would have shattered the pacing but it would fit her character.
There is literally nothing anyone can do to lisa more truly agonizingly torturous than what happened to her in canon. Except for some dead dove fics by figures like Alotoaxolotls and even then it's still close.
The parahumans series is basically about lisa wilbourn triggering from watching her brother die and knowing she could have saved him and didn't and then watching that happen again. Twice.
I think the line "you couldn't have made it easy?" is maybe the single most heartbreaking line in the entire parahumans series for me. The whole pepper spray thing genuinely crushes me every time.
Close second is "this makes me feel really sorry for your dad, because Iâm starting to get a sense of what you put him through." Not very pithy, though.
If lisa triggered during speck it probably would have been late, when lisa realizes that she can't be the one to translate for khepri. This is a fucking crushing moment for smugbug fans (platonic or otherwise) because it's truly the moment where lisa had nothing left of taylor (and her facade as the smartest one in the room fully shattered).
If you wanted to put it somewhere else for some reason, maybe you could put it at the point where taylor leaves the undersiders to join the protectorate, but gold morning is just better. Or worse? If both of those are out for some reason then you could look at my fanfic where taylor dies post-leviathan, but that's distinctly divergent from canon, where these other two would just be completely canon until lisa second triggers.
For her second-trigger powers, this I always had trouble with. I'm not sure, cause the problem is that a second trigger has to be powerful compared to a non-second trigger, but still at least a little limited, and if you take like any limits at all away from lisa she basically becomes a god in purple spandex. Practically omnipotent. And that's not very interesting to write, except as a "lisa stomps all of canon" thing I guess.
My first and most comprehensive idea is basically that you increase her capacity for power use, making it way less of a debate whether it's worth it to use her power (it almost always because the tradeoffs are far less significant) but you make it far more prone to misfires or unhelpful tangents, especially about how people around her are lying-to or betraying her! This basically shifts the debate lisa has from "should I use my power?" to "should I trust my power?" The idea being that her power is less reliable but she's necessarily more reliant on it.
The opposite is also a possibility, where her power basically becomes way more reliable and accurate, but she has way less capacity. So it's basically always reliable but she really has to consider whether or not it'd be worth it because she gets very little power use per day. So it's more reliable but she can't rely on it. This one is probably a more concrete upgrade compared to tattletale 1.0 than the machine gun approach to thinker powers.
Since lisa's first trigger is mainly about regret, I guess her second trigger would be mainly about what she regretted. Did she more regret not knowing more or not knowing better? Something like that.
The problem with these is that they're kind of conceptually boring.
A third idea some others have floated around is if she gets an ability to control who suffers the migraine, so she could make others around her suffer the brunt of the migraine instead of her. However, my main gripe with this is that it makes her even more comically powerful than the other two options. Not only is it a lisa without migraines, it's a lisa with a shaker effect to induce migraines in others!
I'm not actually sure which of these (or maybe a fourth option i had not even considered) is the best option.
tl;dr: ask a lisa expert. I dunno. get silvianorton on the horn
