For The Forgotten Ones is completed, I haven’t read the final chapter yet because I wanted to finish this first
Buddy thank you so much for this wonderful story, I know I keep saying it but it genuinely changed my life. I hadn’t been in the Undertale fandom since about 2017, it was my first fandom experience so it was very special to me, but I left it far behind. at the start of this year I stumbled upon Calcium-cat’s comic based on the first chapter, and I found my way to this fic and read I think seven chapters in one night LOL. I had to stop because it was so late, but afterwards I sat in the dark of my room and just, felt. this fic felt like the peak of the old Undertale fandom, it was almost overwhelming (in the best way). all these emotions and this energy that I hadn’t felt in years all came rushing back it was like magic. like rediscovering the meaning of life. I know that sounds ridiculous and cheesy but Undertale genuinely made me who I am, it was my first fandom, drew my first fanart and wrote my first fan fiction and went to my first con and made friends and discovered this whole community that made me feel like me. and this story is interwoven with all of that. it feels like Home.
because of this fic I gained the motivation to create SO MUCH art, my skills have developed so much and I genuinely love my art now when I didn’t really before. I’ve found my style bc of you :) I’ve also gained an actual following now that continues to grow which is a dream come true since I first joined the internet. and I’ve made so many wonderful friends, I’ve got a group that came together bc of this fic and they’re all such wonderful people that I may never have met otherwise.
I’ve still got so many screenshots and ideas to draw for this fic so I’ll be appreciating it for a long time still, but this is a thank you, a gift and an appreciation for all that you’ve done. you consistently uploaded a sizeable chapter EVERY WEEK which is INSANE, your dedication is so inspiring. you created a beautiful world and characterized all these popular characters so well, especially when mischaracterizations have become the fandom canon atp (looks at Swap Sans,,,) you did so much. you created a family we all adored, we laughed and cried and prayed and joked and created this wonderful community within a wonderful community just to appreciate your words. truly effing masterful. I love For The Forgotten Ones, I will print it out into a book someday soon, to put it on my shelf where I can see it always. Thank you thank you thank you I’ve said so many words and still I feel I have not expressed the depths of my feelings
oh well
I gotta post this sometime lol
ok bye :) 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
(and to anyone else who reads this, this art is also going to be my dtiys event but I’ll make a separate post for that !!!! it’ll be going on until the end of November)

What do you do when there’s not much to an AU? You make up your own stuff, ofc. And as is per usual when I make Character Designs, I make up a shit ton of lore too.
The ramblings under the cut, but what I’m really interested in, is what you guys think. Do you guys have any headcanons/ideas for this AU? Let me hear them! Also, if you don’t wanna read on tumblr, here’s the Google Docs link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/151yshHxnb_--P6eMKkwkI2dee9xC_Llb/view?usp=sharing
Before I get into the characters’ roles, here’s some general facts and backstory of their town:
- Basically, it’s Undertale meets Harvest Moon / Stardew Valley. Well, kinda. I at least used that approach for coming up for the jobs for the characters. You know, how there’s always a general store, a doctor, a smithy, etc.
- The usual story of a HM game is that you come to a town that’s way past its glory days and you, as the player/farmer, help them get back to that. The “backstory” of the town is that that already kinda happened. I’ll get into it more in the character description, but basically when Asgore was still mayor, the town got really popular. Then yadda yadda, a certain tragedy happened, two kids died, and the town suddenly got very bad publicity. There was a lot of stuff going on back then, bad reputation being spread and also a lot of law stuff, cos, you know, supposed child murder ‘n all, so Asgore made the decision to shut off the town to ppl from outside. This was in the interest of most monsters living there, because as fun as it is to have a lot of people coming there, most just wanted to live a quiet life. Not everyone was happy with that though, so many moved away from town and some others are trying to get the town back on its feet. But more on that later.
On to the characters:
I’m just gonna start with the skelebros, cos it’s their fault in the first place I got so invested.
Basically, they are what the player is in hm/sdv. They just showed up one day, took over the abandoned farmhouse and began their life there. The two came to town way after it was “closed” and since then a new mayor has opened the possibility for new residents to move in. Their farm helps the economy of the town a lot and the mayor, like usually in hm games, is trying to use that to make the town more known again. The skelebros aren’t really working towards that goal however.
So, now a bit more detail on them individually.
Papyrus:
- The design is mostly based on what’s “canon” in this au.
- He works mostly on the fields and is in charge of the crops. Their fields aren’t spectacularly big, but still big enough to plant a few dozen rows of veggies.
- Paps also helps out a lot in town when he has the time. He helps Asgore with his plants, he goes fishing with Undyne, helps Toriel carry crates around and so on. This is inspired by the part-time job mechanic in HM ToT.
- Unbelievably, in this AU Pap is not an absolutely awful cook. Since he helps out at Muffet’s and Grillby’s a lot, they tend to show him some tricks to cooking. Even though Pap’s not a big fan of the greasy or overly sweet cooking those two do, he picks up a lot.
Sans:
- Again, design mostly based on the “canon” look. Maybe a bit more baggy.
- This is finally an AU this dude gets to rest. Since there are no resets and he doesn’t have to see his bro die again and again, for once in his life, he’s not a sad ball of depression. He’s just a chill and lazy dude that loves to make puns. Though, since he’s not too experienced with the feelings of loss, helplessness or grieving, he still tends to hide behind puns and fakes smiles if he does feel bad.
- Sans is in charge of the animals on the farm. Papyrus begrudgingly gave him that role since Pap’s loud demeanour and hectic movements usually scare the animals. Sans’ relaxed attitude draws the animals to him naturally and even if Pap mostly finds him sleep against a tree, in a stack of hay or on one of the sheep, the animals are always fed, healthy and relaxed, so Sans seems to be doing his job.
- Sans always has a small chic sit inside his hoodie or hat. Is it always the same one? Who knows, maybe.
- Sans also, somehow, can produce eggs out of thin air. Grab into his hoodie pocket, in his pants pocket, in his hat, in his slipper, there’s suddenly always an egg there. On good days he can even make butter or cheese appear.
Gaster:
- He’s literally just a scarecrow in this. Though, if you ask any of the bros why they designed their scarecrow that way, they won’t have an answer.
Frisk&Toriel:
- Frisk is mostly based on what I wore myself as a kid in summer. Just a loose shirt with a cappy. Toriel basically has her ut gown, just with an apron on top.
- Frisk just appeared outside the “magical” forest one day. Napstablook and his cousin found them and brought them to Toriel, who has been taking care of them since.
- Toriel runs the general store in town, but also often takes care of the few kids that still live there.
- Frisk usually helps out in Toriels store, plays with the other kids or sits around at Asgore’s. They’re notorious for nabbing small snacks, mostly from Asgore’s plants. You’ll always find them munching on something.
- Frisk was in town before the skelebros. Since they’d moved in, Frisk often went to spy on their farm. After a small incident with angry chicken, Frisk got to know the two better and now they see them as something between brothers and uncles.
- But Frisk honestly gets along with everyone. Just like in UT, they’ve not only been adopted by Toriel but literally everyone.
- Toriel and Asgore’s relationship is not as bad as in the main game, since, you know, Asgore didn’t kill literal children, but there’s still tension between them. Back when Asriel and Chara died and the whole thing with the bad rep for the town began, Toriel felt betrayed by Asgore focusing more on the town than giving their deceased kids the grieving they deserved. They’re not divorced, but Toriel still moved out and said needed space to think. Now that Frisk is in the picture though, the both of them are slowly coming to even ground and may even be able to talk things out and clear up the uncertainty of their decisions.
Asgore:
-Asgore has his UT Ending / Deltarune clothes, just with a gardener’s belt.
- He’s the previous mayor of the town, but after all the crap that happened, he stepped down from the position. Now he has his own little shop and sells seeds, saplings, homegrown veggies and fertilizer. So, basically what e.g. the Marimba Farm is in HM AP
- His main customer is Papyrus and they’re on friendly terms. Asgore is worried about how much and how hard Pap works, so he often gives him a discount.
- Since his family’s past tragedy, Asgore is kind of nervous around kids. So, when he first met Frisk, he hoped they’d not visit him too often. But to his chagrin, Frisk took an instant liking to him and spends a lot of time at his shop (and steals eats the fresh grown veggies). Now, he’s really grateful for that, because for one, he loves Frisk as dearly as he had his own children, and also because now the tension and mistrust between him and Toriel seem to grow smaller day by day.
Undyne&Alphys:
- I gave Undyne a pretty basic fisher’s outfit. Alphys basically has Elli from HM’s outfit, just a bit more doctory stuff added. She still has her canon lab coat too.
- In essence, Undyne and Alphys have 2 completely different jobs. Alphys is the resident doctor and Undyne runs the fish market.
Two things. Yes, I know Alphys is more a mechanic than a doctor, she fits the aesthetic though, so she’s the doc now. And no, Undyne being a fisherwoman is not cannibalism, think of it more as a shark hunting smaller fish.
- The reason I lump them together is because they act as the local “smithy”. Alphys is still really tech savvy in this (I mean, Mettaton is still part of this AU), so she takes on most problems with electronics and stuff. For Undyne, I didn’t want to lose her Royal Guard’s Captain image, so she’s really good at handling tools (and weapons, but Al doesn’t let her make them anymore). So basically, if there’s a broken tool, you can be sure that either Undyne or Alphys can fix it.
- As for relationships, those two are still an item. Alphys is still really shy and a shut-off, but since Undyne and Pap become best friends, she gets to know the skelebros better. She and Sans especially get along well, since most of the time Undyne and Papyrus are let loose, they sit back and talk about science-y stuff. (no, Sans doesn’t have a background in science but he’s still into sci-fi)
- Alphys has a bit of a strained relationship with both Asgore and Mettaton.
Back when Chara and Asriel died, it was because of “illness” (maybe poisoning?). Alphys feels awful because with her back then limited knowledge on medicine she couldn’t help the two. Asgore doesn’t hold anything against her but Alphys can’t help but feel guilty.
Alphys still built Mettaton’s body in this one. The two had a really big disagreement, because Mettaton hated the fact the town was going to close, and he couldn’t understand how Alphys could feel otherwise, even more so endorse the idea.
Mettaton, Napstablook, Mad Dummy/Mew Mew:
- Napsta and Dummy are pretty self-explanatory, they got straw hats. Mettaton’s outfit is a bit of a joke cos it’s a play on “work at the top and party at the bottom”. The tie has two different sides, one with the yellow red pattern, the other completely red. His “top part” is the business part, because when he’s on tv or in the mayors’ office, you don’t usually see his feet. The bottom is his party/dance part, cos his dancing/entertainment channels mostly feature his legs.
- Mettaton, still a robot, Napstablook and Mad Dummy are all still cousins in this AU.
- Originally, they all lived and worked at the Blook Farm, the Animal Farm of this AU. Mettaton, however, despised that simple live and after befriending Alphys and her building him a body, he left the Farm to pursue bigger things.
- Mettaton runs the local tv network. From weather to game shows, he does it all. He also runs the tailor shop in town that sells his designer clothes and merchandise. After Asgore stepped down, Mettaton also took over the role of town’s mayor and now works towards making the place more known again. Not everybody is happy with him doing that though.
- One of those people is the Mad Dummy. He can’t stand people anyways and he always claims that history would just repeat itself.
- Since the whole family is made of ghosts, they have different dummies and scarecrows they can use to take care of the animals. To mock Mettaton and kinda get back at Alphys for giving MTT such an opportunity, Mad Dummy found the blueprints for the Mew Mew robot and now modelled one of their scarecrows after it.
- Napstablook isn’t fond of taking over obejcts like his cousins do, so he mostly takes care of the snails. Somehow, he can interact with them even when incorporeal.
Muffet&Grillby:
- The two of them run the Inn together. Muffet cooks in the daytime and makes desserts, Grillby manages the bar in the evening.
- The two still can’t really stand each other but working together like this benefits them both because their rivalry just spurs them on more.
- Even though Grillby is a patient person, somehow Muffet is the only person who riles him up enough to retaliate. (Well, maybe except for Sans, he’s a strong second).
So, basically everything between those two is a challenge in some way. Even if Papyrus doesn’t notice, even his cooking lessons are a challenge for them.
- Even though they’re constantly bickering, after working together for so many years, there’s a strange level of respect and trust between them. Even if back when they first started this business, they’d pour salt into an already open wound, nowadays they’d know better and just take a step back from the other or even comfort the other (on very rare occasions only).
Asriel&Chara:
- They be dead. Kinda.
Some Characters that’d live in that town too but that I haven’t made designs for:
- Gerson is the original smithy of the town. He’d grown up in a family of smiths, but he’d always had an appreciation for the sea. That’s why, when the town became more deserted and Undyne had a good enough skill level as smith, he took up the Captains hat and now mostly spends his days out on sea. He also ferries people to places if they need him to. Oh, and just like in canon, Undyne learned most of her skills from him.
- Burgerpants is a poor dude Mettaton basically kidnapped when he was trying to get fame in the city. Now Burgerpants works wherever MTT needs him to, be that as cameraman for the tv shows, cashier in his tailor shop or his slave secretary in the mayor’s office.
- MK is Frisk’s best kid friend. MK’s parents are in charge of shipping the goods out of town and paying the individual people. MK’s the one that usually collects the goods at the end of the day.
- Other than that, there are only a few people in town. I’d imagine the older folks or the really young families stayed in town after it was closed. I think the librarby dude would still run the library. Some Snowdin residents like the stone family or the dogs also might still live there.

First off...HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO THE SQUID!!!
I honestly had no idea it was his birthday until last night from twitter. I was in the middle of writing this scene, in fact, and realized ‘Hey, you know what? I could probably get this done in time for it!’. Now here we are.
Secondly...This is a scene from one of my WIP’s. It will probably take place somewhere in the middle chapters, but I saw that it was a fairly out of context scene to show that it wouldn’t really matter if I showed it now as a teaser or later.
Obviously, I chose the latter.
That said, this is set to change a bit as the WIP develops, but it’ll be nice to see what you all think of it. Hope you enjoy!
Fandom: Undertale, but specifically UTMV
Pairings: Implied Errorink, or Pre-Errorink
Characters: Error (Who belongs to CQ) and Ink (Who belongs to Comyet)
Warnings: Nothing really. Although, again, it is a scene from a wip, which means that it is not in it’s final form. Let me know!
Word Count: 2488
~oOo~
His phone buzzed on the floor beside him. Ink paused in the middle of trying to balance a pencil on his finger, which was probably a losing battle, but since when has that ever stopped him before? That’s right, never. And it never would. Setting the pencil aside, he checked his phone and read the short message.
mommy-bear
Are you coming home for supper? It’s past 5.
Ink jumped, looking outside to see that, indeed, the sun was lower in the sky and time had in fact passed. They must’ve gotten lost in the throughs of their homework, or the casual avoidance of it, for one of them. Error seems to have made some sort of headway into the work from Mx. Alex. Good for him. He’ll be able to hand it in on Monday without it bugging him in the back of his mind while he ignores that bugging and just doddles instead of doing his work like he should until the next thing he knows it’s almost midnight on Sunday and he still hasn’t gotten it done.
But honestly, who would do that? Certainty not Ink.
Error had also noticed his jump and was looking at him now. “What is it?”
“Just a text from my mom.” He answered, gathering up his things. A glance to his study buddy showed Error blinking and setting down his pencil as well in order to listen. “She was just wondering where I was. It’s after five, y’know? I said I’d be back then.”
“Oh.” Error fell silent after that.
Once his things were all accounted for (he did lose his eraser for a minute there and partially freaked out about it, which was kind of silly as he had plenty more than just this one white one, others that were far more colourful, but he didn’t have to worry for long—Error had silently placed it on the bed for him to grab, making Ink smile in gratitude), Ink walked to the bedroom door and got to the top of the stairs before he realized another pair of footsteps were following him.
Man, Error really needed to take him up on the suggestion of bells. He was too silent on his feet, just too much like a ghost for his liking. Not that he didn’t like ghosts. He just didn’t like people being silent when their walking. It made him paranoid.
Ink turned around. “You know I can just walk myself back, right? I literally live right next door.” He held up one finger. “That’s the house right beside yours.”
Error scowled, just like he always did when Ink pointed things out like that. It was also a reason why he was determined to point things like that out as often as he did, which was rather often. “Don’t be stupid. Of course I know that.”
“Then why are you following me?”
“What if I wasn’t? What if I just decided to get some food? To do that, I’d need to go to the kitchen, which is also downstairs.” He gestured to the passageway to said downstairs. “Those are the only stairs to get there.”
Ink smirked, “You have a box on the top shelf of your closet where you keep all the chocolate you bought, stole, or stole from Fell.” This statement was rewarded with a light blush of embarrassment from Error, who looked around as if to make sure his brothers didn’t overhear.
Ink was sure that they already knew though.
He also suspected that they put chocolate in the box too, as Error was sometimes surprised that there was some there when he had said he had eaten it all.
“I didn’t even say I was getting chocolate! I might be getting something else.”
“You don’t snack on anything but chocolate.” Error’s scowl deepened. “You also sort of admitted to following me” He couldn’t help but laugh when the blush on Error’s skull deepened in realization and his taller friend looked away from him. It was always interesting to see just how much it took to get to this shade of blue, with the yellow freckle-like dots just barely seen overtop. The sight made Ink want to draw it.
He wanted to draw it so badly.
Laughter dying down, Ink tilted his head and smiled at Error. “If you wanted to walk with me, you could’ve just asked.”
For some reason, Error glanced back at him and quickly looked away again, blush deepening again, the yellow becoming brighter. He also started to glitch a little bit, which would normally spark a tiny bit of worry, but he could see that the other wasn’t in any danger, so he had no reason to worry. If the glitches got worse, then he could worry.
That was…pretty much the saying for being friends with him.
‘If the glitches got worse, then you could worry.’
Error burrowed down, like he usually would if he had his scarf on. It was, presumably, back in his room. Weird. The glitch he knew never went anywhere without his scarf; at school, at home, at the café, at the park, walking, sitting, it was always on. Well, it probably came off at home. Here he was with his family, a safe, happy environment away from the judging eyes of school and the city. He could be himself here. That’s an assumption, at least, hopefully the right one. Ink didn’t know the relationship between skeleton and scarf and never asked, never would talk about it until, or if, Error brought it up. He wanted to respect his privacy, after all.
But now that he thought about it, the scarf had been coming off around him lately. It had started off small. It started with it being up to his mouth, almost as if a way to hide or be smaller than he was. That was how it was for a while. Then one morning, it was down just a bit, just under his mouth. And as the days passed and the two talked more and became friends, the scarf would be lower and lower. Down to the chin in Math. Under the chin the next day. Around his neck a week later in English class.
It was almost like earning his trust. He had earned Error’s trust, which meant that he got to see the skeleton behind the scarf. The true, unshielded one.
It was…kind of nice, to be honest.
Ink blinked, coming back to himself and realizing that Error had mumbled something.
“Sorry, what?”
Error looked back at him and sighed a little before speaking up just enough so that Ink could hear. “I said, can I…walk with you?” His arms went in front of him. Ink guessed that it was a temporary shield in place of the scarf.
He was prepared to be rejected and just walk back to his room.
Well, Ink couldn’t have that, now could he?
“Of course!” The smile on his face widened and he started down the stairs with lighter steps. It was always nice when friends offered to walk you home or something of the sort. The walk was less lonely, even if you never spoke a word.
It’s just how it was.
They talked in the small time it took to get from Error’s house to Ink’s. Well, that wasn’t really true. Ink did most of the talking, which ended up being mostly complaints about homework and school and also talk about his works in progresses. Error just listened quietly, humming or nodding in certain spots. He would like to think that Ink could talk about nothing at all and Error would listen. It just seemed to be the way he was.
Their friendship was a good one. Maybe there were a few unbalances here and there, but overall, it was good and healthy and, most importantly, mutual. It benefited both of them in different ways. Ink had someone who would listen without interrupting, who cared about his interest and how he felt, even though he didn’t have a soul and relied on substitutes. Error had someone who didn’t pressure him into a conversation, who gave him and respected his personal space and asked before touching his things and body. It was like a missing piece just fell into place, so perfect, it felt like it hadn’t been missing at all.
That said, there were some hurdles.
Like how Ink was soulless. There was always that thought, loud or quiet, one that questioned whether the love he felt towards his friends and family was real. Or if he was just deluding himself and everyone around him into thinking that they were. This thought had always been there, since before Dream and Blue, before Error, before anyone he was with now—what if it was all fake?
It was kind of silly. The substitutes he took acted as a soul. It supplied him his soul magic, the working parts of his body and the emotion spectrum. He may not feel things as intensely as others and may be lacking a feeling in a certain way, but that didn’t mean they weren’t real. They’re substitutes for a reason, after all.
…Ah! They’ve arrived at his house.
Ink blinked, stopping on the first step and turning back to Error. “So…” he said, finding himself unable to think of what else to say. He shifted awkwardly and cleared his throat. “I’ll see you next Friday?” He tried to think back on what else was going on in school. “We have some sort of project to do or test to study for, right?”
Error nodded. “Yeah, I think so.” He fell silent too, but didn’t leave like Ink had expected. He lingered, clearly thinking about something with the way his arms slightly glitched around. He didn’t say anything, though.
“Anything else?” Ink asked, trying to prompt him.
The blush, which had died down as they walked over here, brightened again. “Um…yeah, actually.” Error straightened and fiddled with his sleeve. “Do you remember the lesson we had…I think it was a month ago? In Health?”
Ink rocked on his heels as he thought. It was times like these that he cursed his memory. A month ago…a month ago…he didn’t really remember a lot of the lessons from a month ago. But the ones that he did… “Do you mean the one about the different types of intimacy? I only recall that it was about intimacy, nothing specific.”
“Yeah…yeah, that’s the one.”
“Okay…why is it important?” Curious. Error rarely asked him if he could remember a lesson from as long as a month ago. He knew how bad Ink’s memory was, so why did he ask? And why now, of all times?
“I, uh…w-well…” Error stuttered. Error didn’t normally stutter. It was only when he glitched really badly and was on the verge of crashing that he stuttered, or lagged, as he liked to call it. Normally, though, he spoke fine, if quiet and almost echoey.
Speaking of glitches…the ones on his arms had quickened up a little. Not enough to be too worrying yet, but definitely something to watch over.
Frowning, Ink was just about to bring that to attention when Error spoke again, voice clearer. “Just…can you…raise your hand?” He slowly brought up a hand with the inside facing Ink, like he was to high-five someone. “Like this?”
Ink eyed him suspiciously.
One of the first things he had learned about Error was that the other had haphephobia. He couldn’t stand people touching him, as it usually caused a flurry of glitches in the touched spot, and sometimes it was so bad that the minute someone touched him, he crashed. Those days were few, but they have happened. Ink had been lucky that it hasn’t happened since meeting Error. But this fact he had taken in and committed to memory, determined to not trigger his friend like that.
He would hate himself, if he did.
But now Error was asking him to raise his hand? For what? He couldn’t see them high-fiving. It would be too painful for Error and frankly a bit of a reach for Ink (he hated being short like that). And because it would be painful, he couldn’t see why he had to raise his hand.
But he was curious.
Curiosity usually made his answers for him.
Just as slowly as Error did, Ink raised his hand, mirroring the one in front of him.
Error inhaled and…
Ink’s mind froze.
He could barely focus on Error stepping closer as excitement and happiness began to take over. The urge to squeal was overwhelming, but he reigned himself in as he knew that wouldn’t help Error at all. It would probably just make him run away and never come near Ink again. And he didn’t want that. So, he forced himself to stay still and stay quiet, eyes focused on the hand that started to come closer and closer to his.
He could see the black bones begin to glitch a ton and felt a spark of worry—despite what might just happen, he didn’t want Error to hurt himself. He would never want him to—he should speak up now. He should tell Error to stop and calm down.
They didn’t have to do it like this.
They didn’t even have to touch at all!
They didn’t…have to…
It was…warm.
Fuzzy.
The hands contrasted starkly and they would be stunning in a painting. The white of Inks and the black of Errors. They were different, but they looked so well together.
This…This had to be a dream.
But it wasn’t. There was a light touch to his bones, just enough to know that the hand against his was, in fact, against his and trembling ever so slightly and actually existed in the world and not just his imagination. Somehow, this made it even more surreal. He knew it was real…but he just couldn’t believe it.
If this was a dream, he didn’t want to wake up.
Despite his promise to stay still, Ink shakily inhaled.
And just like that, the spell was broken.
Error retracted his hand and walked away quickly. Ink was slow to realize what was happening and so by the time his hand was up and the name of his tongue, his friend was already gone. He stood there with his arm outstretched, gazing at the house next door blankly.
He slowly looked down at his hand.
It still tingled.
Gently wrapping his other hand around it, not daring to actually touch, he brought the hands closer to his chest, right over where his soul would be.
It felt like something should be beating wildly in there.
It felt like some new emotion had been lodged in his substitutes.
And somehow, it felt like that contact, the light touch of hands, was far more intimate than a kiss had ever and would ever be.

Speaking of music, I really like to sing, and I think I'm actually pretty good at it. I don't open up very easily at all, so if I'm honest with you I really trust you. And I've been described as the friend everyone comes to for comfort/advice, and I take that role with pride. In public, I can be very affectionate, or not affectionate at all. It really depends on what my S/O would like. But when we're home, I'm usually pretty clingy. (I hope thiat wasn't too much, or too little, info!) (2/2)
okay so I did a huge whoops and deleted the first half of this ask. Here's the first part of it:
Hi, I'm here for a matchup! (Sorry in advance if I do a lot of asks to fit in all my info). My name is Viper, I am Genderfluid, Pansexual, and Polyamorus. I am an ambivert, who normally doesn't leave my house unless asked, but once I do my inner extrovert comes out. But I can only take so much, and after a couple of hours I'll need some alone time to relax. I like to read adventure/sci-fi/horror books when I get the chance. I also am an amateur artist, who listens to music 24/7. (1/?)
Hello there! Don't worry about it at all the more information on you the merrier. Reading this you honestly sound like such an awesome person to be around with and just hangout. Like I could just say something that's been on my mind for a really long time and it's pretty heavy but you completely just listen and understand. You're just someone everybody gets along with you know? Immediately when I read everything two boys came to mind instantly and though they may be the most basic answers I'd say I got the match pretty accurate. Or at least I'd like to think so lol. Thank you so much for sending this in!
I match you with Horrortale!Sans and Undertale!Sans
Alright so immediately off the bat you may be thinking 'how the fuck did I get here?' and honestly that's a valid question. You don't exactly see the two and think that they're best friends who could both share a very cute human. Axe reflects Sans in such a way that really disturbs him. If the human just made one different decision Sans would've been left in the underground to starve with every other monster. He also isn't very fond of how Crooks appears and it kind of haunts him that in another timeline he failed Paps. Axe on the other hand isn't fond of Sans because he feels like he always acts high and mighty. He doesn't like how Sans can sit around and act like Axe is some sort of freak when Sans isn't even a completely innocent monster himself. He just acts like a lazy idiot but he isn't. It also doesn't help that whenever Axe looks at Sans he's just reminded of how his Frisk wronged him. He's reminded that he isn't the monster he used to be because of the head injury he endured and the hardships underground. As mentioned before, one wrong move and at the end of the day Sans and Axe are one of the same. They both reflect the parts of each other that they would rather live without confronting.
There's immediately a lot to unpack here from the start. Getting the two to even begin to compromise on a poly relationship with you is admittedly going to be a challenge. It would require you to be able to firmly hold your ground and get them to sort their shit out. It's a lot of conversation and trust needed in order for this to work out. In the end, they both come to the compromise after a lot of discussion and setting boundaries of what is and isn't alright with them. Sometimes they might clash a bit and have those issues resurface (its very rare since both skeletons when needed are amazing at concealing their emotions) and you'll need to act as the middleman. At the end of the day it's all worth it to them just to see you happy.
Let's start off first with Sans. It's amazing how I've gone on for a bit and I haven't even technically started. The fact that you don't really like going out of your way to go out unless asked to is a bit of a relief. It's not that Sans doesn't like socializing, it's just that a lot of the time he really needs a break to just relax on the couch and nap with you, you know? He's got a lot on his mind and Papyrus often scolds him for sleeping and with Grillby's it can at times be overwhelming when he just needs peace and quiet. Just knowing that his cute datemate isn't going to do any of that helps him relax. It's going to be a lot of just enjoying each other's company even if it's quiet at the start. The silence between you two isn't ever uncomfortable though, just enjoying your company is enough for him. Of course there will actually be times where he does offer you to go to Grillby's and when you say yes he's always really happy to share his favorite bar with you. When you two sit together at his usual spot it's a lot of him joking around with you and absolutely looking at you with heart eyes when he gets a certain genuine laugh out of you. He's actually teased about it a lot the few times you don't accept his offer to go to Grillby's. Sans lives to see you smile with his jokes and he just tells them that they're jealous he ended up with such a cute datemate and they didn't. If you ever find yourself exhausted and you need to go home after you're bone tired just tell him and he'll teleport you right home no hassle.
Once you reach a certain point in your relationship Sans will start to gradually accept your affection. You'll need to ease him into it, since he's really not used to anybody besides his brother showing him any sort of affection. Of course before this he's absolutely bombarding you with flirty puns numerous times but physical affection? That's going to take a while. However once he's used to it you can absolutely smother him all you want. He'll only get embarrassed if it's in a public place like Grillbys but he's good at hiding it for the most part. In front of people like his brother he'll still be a little unsure but for the most part it's like a running joke where Pap yells at him to knock it off and Sans pushes his buttons a little. It often goes a little like this:
Papyrus: SANS! I DEMAND THAT YOU UNHAND THE HUMAN THIS INSTANT!
Sans, a hand on your waist: what human?
Papyrus: THE ONE IN YOUR POSSESSION
Sans, pulling you closer: this human?
Papyrus: SANS
Sans: this one right here?
Papyrus: SANS STOP
Sans, moving his hands a little lower:
Papyrus: SANS PLEASE WE'RE SURROUNDED BY CHILDREN THIS IS A HUMAN CHILD'S 5TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION
It's all in good fun and he never goes further than that. The one place he'll draw the line is if you get a little too sexual for him in public. Especially if his brother is right there. He prefers to keep that stuff just between you and him.
Okay now onto Axe! Unlike Sans, Axe would rather stay inside for the rest of his life than go outside. His appearance discourages him from wanting to do so. If you're with him this mentality will probably be projected onto you as well. He won't really ask you to go out anywhere (unless it's somewhere he specifically knows will make you happy) so in terms of that don't expect much from him. Axe is really happy that you don't really like going out either way and you'd rather spend time with him inside the house where it's safe, warm, and he can keep an eye out for you. It's comforting to him that he can know where you are and that you're happy with him. His favorite moments with you are when you've got your head in a book and he sees your face relax as you get lost in your own little world. It's just the cutest thing. Axe absolutely adores the fact that you're clingy because unlike his counterpart (assuming that at this point he obviously trusts you) it doesn't take time for him at all to want to cuddle you, hold you in his arms, kiss you, etc. He's shy about none of it. The only thing you'd really need to look out for is when you try and initiate affection yourself. It's not that it's unwelcomed; he just doesn't take surprises well due to the nature of his underground. Make sure that you let him know what's coming and you'll both be perfectly fine. During the few times that you two are in public together he's not shy about showing the world that you're his. The only time where he might ask you to step back a little is when you're with his brother. He doesn't like Crooks seeing stuff like this because he still has an instinct to protect him from things. Not that you'd ever try anything of course.
An aspect about you that both skeletons greatly appreciate is how you're very honest with the people that you love and that you act as the friend who listens. They've both found themselves in the same position as you and now that you're dating both of them it's a wonderful change of pace. You all can sit down and vent to each other instead of only listening to others rant and you all absolutely trust each other. Honesty and integrity are both traits the skeletons really look for in a datemate. There's basically no secrets between the three of you and for your skeleton boys thats definitely new for them. As for your talent with singing and art? They genuinely can't get enough of either. Whenever you draw something? Sans will literally stare and wonder how he ended up with someone as talented as you meanwhile Axe has already grabbed the drawing and put it on the fridge. If you ever try and talk yourself down both of them are immediately on your case about how you shouldn't put yourself down and that everything you make is a masterpiece. Axe will literally also ask you who the fuck made you think like that and where do they live. He isn't joking. Sans won't be as vocal about it as Axe is but he's listening in as well. With your singing they both love your voice to pieces. Sans will hype you up to every single person at Grillby's and even encourage you to let others hear your talent. If not, that's cool too. He can just sit and listen at home. Axe mostly likes to ask for you to sing to him when he's having a really rough day or when it's late at night and you're both alone. What can he say? It helps him sleep.

Joker Asserts Dominance Over Banjo
It was a wild day at the Smash Mansion. It had been revealed that Terry Bogard would be making his way to Smash Bros, Banjo and Kazooie had finally arrived, and even SANS (from Undertale) was here! It was exciting for the fellow fighters to meet Sans, along with Banjo and his Bird friend. Everyone was crowded around the bear and bird duo, along with the skeleton.
Everyone except for Joker, that is.
As much as he wanted to meet Sans (he was a big fan of Undertale), he was scanning the scene with an air of dismay. He was almost certain he had been replaced by Banjo and his bitchy bird (who was not unlike Morgana), as they crowded around him and bombarded him with questions about his hometown now that Gruntilda wasn’t terrorizing Spiral Mountain anymore.
He secretly yearned to be at the spotlight, savoring his extremely extra and flashy moments as a Phantom Thief. But with Banjo being a cultural icon, it wasn’t very likely that he would be getting the spotlight soon.
Actually, scratch that.
Make it never.
He would never be popular ever again. He frowned as he gazed longingly at the other fighters, wishing they would notice he wasn’t there. But they wouldn’t. They wouldn’t notice him. Not over Banjo. He glared at the pudgy bear as his saddened frown turned into a rage-filled grimace. That bear, the one that took all his friends from him and left him to rot.
Damn him.
Damn him to the darkest, most sin filled pits of hell.
Hey, wait a minute.
Sin.
Joker’s eyes widened as the back of his mind made a plan. A devious plan to get rid of Banjo and Kazooie once and for all. A smirk split across his lips as his tongue licked and covered them with saliva. “I know what to do…” The Phantom Thief muttered devilishly as he slunk further into the shadows, planning on hatching his wicked plan very, very soon. “You better enjoy your time here, scuzz-fur and bird brain, for it’ll be very short.” He chuckled ominously as he disappeared from view.
***
It had been three days since Banjo, Kazooie, and Sans had come to stay at the Smash Mansion. It had been eventful, to say the least. The child fighters always fought over who would get to fight Banjo next, Pit would always be next to Sans, cracking terrible angel-themed puns (which Sans himself highly approved of) and Fox was surprisingly the only one to wonder where the actual hell Joker went. The vulpine pilot brought this up at the lunch table while talking to Palutena, Olimar, Kirby, and Ganondorf.
Palutena made a face like she left the oven on at her home as she realized that Joker was gone for the span of three days and she never noticed. “I don’t think he’s in trouble, he can take care of himself. He did kill a god, after all.” She said, despite the immense guilt and worry seeping into her words.
“You don’t sound so sure of that Palu.” Fox replied.
Kirby piped up. “You think he ran away cause he thought we didn’t love him anymore?”
McCloud’s ears flattened against his skull as remorse flooded his senses. “Considering his past, it’s very possible.” He said sadly.
“And the fact we’ve been basically latching onto Banjo and Kazooie doesn’t make it any better.” Ganondorf pointed out.
“You’re right, though I wish you weren’t…” Olimar, who had stayed silent the whole time they were talking, decided to put his piece onto the puzzle and help them in what way he could by throwing his input out there.
They all decided to put all their efforts into finding Joker and convincing him that he was still loved and wanted in the Smash Mansion.
***
“Where do you think he’ll be at 5:30?” Joker’s voice questioned.
“I dunno. Probably the garden.” Sans shrugged.
“Great! You just have to walk up to him, start up a conversation, tell him that there’s a fighter he never met, bring him to me, and bingo! Considering your charisma, quick wits, and his stupidity, there’s a 100% guarantee this’ll all work out!” Joker shot up from his seat and clapped his hands, fully knowing Banjo and Kazooie were going to get what they deserved very soon.
“Hehe. The funniest thing about this plan is that it’s not really a lie. There really is a fighter he never met, due to you hiding yourself so well.” Sans chuckled dryly.
Joker shrugged and nodded his head in agreement before sitting down once more. He looked at the clock. It was 5:27. He smiled broadly as he turned to his bony accomplice. “It’s time!” He beamed. “Sans, you must go to the garden!”
The skeleton winked at his Phantom Thief friend as he got up and started to walk out before turning his head towards Joker quizitivly. “What do you plan to do with them once you have them, kiddo?” He asked.
His beaming smile turned into a sadistic smirk as his eyes narrowed in an almost lusty way. “Something very, very wicked, my bony friend!”
Sans snorted loudly. “Okay. You do you kiddo. But i’m watching.” The skeleton had the final say as he left the room with an objective in mind for once.
***
It was bright and sunny when the bear Banjo and his bird friend Kazooie (who was tucked away in his backpack) strode into the garden to look at the flowers and cool his mind. He had been there for a few minutes when he heard the sound of someone walking towards him. He turned around to see Sans strolling on the path, while absentmindedly looking around, until setting his eyes on Banjo and waving to get his attention.
Banjo waved back and hopped over to the skeleton. “Lovely day, isn’t, Sans?” He cheerily called out. Sans shrugged his trademark shrug. “Yeah, I could guess so.” He replied. “Guessing is all you can do with that thick skull of yours, hollow-head!” Kazooie crowed. Banjo slapped the breegull on the back while muttering a hushed “Kazooie!” reprimandingly and looked up. “I’m very sorry about that, Sans.” He apologized profusely. Sans shrugged once again. “Nah, it’s nothin kid. Besides, I need you to come with me. Apparently there’s one fighter we somehow never met. I was shocked myself when I first met him. He’s a real piece of work, that’s what I say.”
Banjo’s shocked expression turned into one of excitement. “Well where is he, Sans?” The bear asked. The skeleton chuckled. “He’s somewhere in the back halls. Here, i’ll take you to him.” Banjo nodded swiftly and excitedly as he walked behind Sans, who showed them the way.
Sans snickered silently as he led the way to, unknowingly to Banjo and Kazooie, their doom.
Mission accomplished.
***
The door to the storage room opened as Sans walked into it with Banjo and Kazooie behind him. The group looked around the place in confusion as they wondered where this missing fighter actually was. Sans scratched his head, despite how impossible it may seem. “Huh. That’s strange. I thought he would be here.”
“Why would he be in a storage closet?” Kazooie piped up. Sans said nothing as he used his telekinesis to shut and lock the door, much to Banjo and Kazooie’s surprise. Banjo turned over to Sans while Kazooie flew out of the bag and attempted in vain to open the door. “S-Sans! What are you doing!” He gasped out.
“Helping me, worm-face!” A mysterious voice boomed. The lights went brighter, enough to reveal the mysterious figure, a teenager with a coal black ankle-length tailcoat, along with a dark gray high-necked waistcoat, that was embellished with shimmering gold accents, ink-colored pants, brownish-black shoes with pointed tips, a pair of  bright red gloves, a black and white birdlike domino mask which drew attention to his eyes, which were blood red and almost glowing. The boy grinned as he descended from the top of the shelf, crimson eyes shimmering evily.
“Hey! Who are you?” Kazooie squawked loudly, obviously angry at being betrayed by Sans. The masked teenager smirked. “The name’s Ren. Ren Amamiya. But to all, I am known as Joker, the Phantom, the Trickster, and, hell, some even know me as Akira Kurusu, although Akira Kurusu is actually my middle name.” He cleared his throat. “But enough with that, I shall soon have my revenge, so you don’t need to hear my life story.”
Banjo tilted his head. “Revenge? On us? Why?” He asked in confusion. Joker shook his head. “Ever since you came here, nobody has talked to me, or even noticed that I was gone! Before you came along, I was loved and cherished by all! You stole everything from me!” He started to quiver with rage, and jealous, anger filled tears began to grow in his eyes as he lost more and more of his composure and began to be driven more and more by his own hatred. “And you’ll pay!” He growled. “You’ll pay for everything!” He snarled as he lunged straight for Banjo, whose eyes were wide and scared, and gripped him by his arms, claw-like fingers drawing blood from the frightened bear, eyes wide, insane, and flickering from blood red to silvery gray.
Kazooie then leapt onto Joker and started pecking at his hair, to which the phantom released Banjo and started scratching and clawing furiously at the freegull before finally hitting her hardly in the chest and watching her fly from his head to the ground in a crumpled mess. “Banjo…” She coughed weakly. “G-get out of here now…” Banjo shook his head and tried to run over to Kazooie, but tripped and fell over a bone which Sans conjured. The skeleton walked over and tied up the bear securely, so that he couldn’t escape while Joker did the same for Kazooie. The phantom thief crouched next to Kazooie and grinned. “I’m going to enjoy this a lot.” He taunted. Kazooie grimaced. “What are you going to do, scum-bag?” Joker brightened up, despite just being insulted. “This.” He said right before grabbing Kazooie and licking her beak. The breegull squawked in disgust as Joker licked her a second time before putting her head inside his mouth. Kazooie cawed and crowed as she attempted to escape Joker’s maw, but to no avail as Joker continued to swallow her whole until she was fully in his stomach chamber, making sure to remove the ropes binding the bird. Joker licked his lips and patted his bulging stomach contently, whereas Banjo looked the fighter in fear, for he had just watched Kazooie get eaten alive, by a teenage boy, no less! Banjo’s eyes widened and he gulped as Joker set his sights on the bear and started to walk in his direction. The phantom crouched, his distended belly sticking out. He tilted Banjo’s head up to his eye level. “You’re gonna be with her soon, so don’t worry about a thing.”
“Kinky.” Sans commented as Joker loosened the ropes on Banjo so that he could eat him easier. Joker then licked his nose, before putting his face inside his mouth and gulping and, despite the bear’s struggling, managed to swallow him whole as well. He fell to the floor huffing and puffing after he found out he was too heavy to move. Despite this, Joker was being washed over by a wave of euphoria that wasn’t about to end any time soon. He rubbed at his own stomach, not understanding why the hell he was so happy about it, but then it hit him: Banjo and Kazooie were at his mercy. If he decided not to lift a finger, they would both be converted into pudge on his figure, and he liked that. A whole fucking lot. Perhaps, he thought, perhaps he would try this on someone else. Maybe that meddlesome assist trophy Waluigi would be an ideal next target, for he was very, very annoying. Maybe.

Edge understood the importance of control. It was a lesson he’d learned barely out of childhood with his first LV burning in his soul like a fiery coal.
He’d seen what a lack of it could do to a Monster, the slavering, mindless, LV hungry creatures who lived on the distant outskirts of his Snowdin. Once a Monster reached that point it was considered a form of Mercy to let them dust, usually in a trap to keep their LV from affecting another.
With years of practice behind him, Edge’s will was iron and while some might consider him imposing or distant, it was all a matter of control. But today was testing his will.
Despite working long hours, he and Janice were still behind in their work, too much was happening, too many things piling up and up, towering haphazardly on their proverbial plate. His temper was on a short fuse, he was snapping too easily, sharp words forming quickly and with force.
Intellectually, he knew this. Far back in the recesses of his mind where warning bells were jangling away. But alarms only worked when they weren’t ignored in favor of paperwork.
A knock on his door interrupted his concentration and before he could even decide whether to let them in, the door swung open. His snarl of irritation died away when Asgore entered the room, his bulk filling Edge’s office in a way few others could manage. None of the chairs would fit him comfortably but he never seemed to mind standing.
“Howdy,” Asgore said, his smile easy and serene. “I was hoping you had a moment to talk.”
It sounded like a question but Edge’s experience with both Monarchy and leaders had taught him that there was only one answer to those types of questions. Asgore’s demeanor was deceptive, a lure into security, and people who worked with him learned quickly the determination that lay beneath it. He and Edge were not specifically friends but if nothing else, Edge respected what lengths Asgore went to for his people.
“Of course,” Edge told him crisply, pushing aside his latest report and giving Asgore his full attention.
“Working hard, I see,” Asgore nodded at his desk, “But you always are. To be honest, the Embassy depends on your work ethic a great deal, you and your secretary--”
“My assistant,” Edge interrupted coolly. “Janice has the same clearance and does similar work to some managers in other departments.” He ignored the fact that six months ago, he would have called her a secretary as well and that the ink was barely dry on paperwork to change that on her employment profile.
Asgore only nodded, still smiling, “As you say, your assistant. We depend on you both, from the legal department to PR. All the work you do is extremely important to us. Which is why I’m sending you home.”
“What?” Edge stared at him, uncomprehending.
“I’m sending you home,” Asgore repeated, and his serenity was lined with steel. “You’re taking the rest of the week off.”
“I…what?” Edge sputtered. He gestured at his desk, the piles of paperwork and folders scattered on top of it. “I can’t possibly…do you know how much work I need to do, I can’t just leave, I—”
“You can and you will,” Asgore told him. He was unmoved at Edge’s protest or the clutter of his desk. “I’ll give you an hour to finish what you’re doing and delegate out anything that cannot wait. In the meantime, I expect that in that hour, I won’t hear about any other interns that you brought to tears?”
“Is that what this is about? That little fool should appreciate that’s all I said to him, I—”
“It is not what this is all about,” Asgore interrupted him, gently implacable. “You’ve had a great deal happen the past few months, both personally and professionally, you could use a few days to yourself to get back into a suitable frame of mind.”
“Upsetting one intern does not mean there is anything wrong with my frame of mind!” Edge snarled. But he glanced away first when Asgore only looked at him, a certain understanding and sadness in his eyes. Of all the Monsters here, Asgore was one of the few with LV himself, and he understood far more than Edge would have preferred. He sighed, glaring uselessly at his desk. “Fine. I’ll take the rest of the week.”
“Wonderful!” Asgore said cheerfully. “Janice will still be here working, although I’ve warned her that she’s only allowed to stay for her normal shift and overtime is strictly forbidden. As your assistant, I’m quite sure she can handle things, without you.”
“I’m sure,” Edge said, unable to hide his grumpiness. Having Janice here would keep him from doing any work in secret, which he suspected was Asgore’s plan all along.
“Enjoy your time off!” Asgore called as he strode back out the door, leaving Edge with his one hour to decide which reports could wait without burning down the world.
~~*~~
Stretch was home when Edge walked in, fully two hours before his normal time and about six from when he’d been coming in the past week. Asgore wasn’t wrong that he’d been working long hours; if he’d only asked, Edge could have simply cut back.
Instead, he had a most of a week to sit around his home and contemplate all the work he could be doing.
How very relaxing.
The fact that his husband was not at all surprised to see him meant that he’d either been warned, or worse, had a hand in arranging this.
Edge only nodded at his greeting and kept walking into the kitchen, rummaging through the refrigerator for ingredients. He almost didn’t care what he made, but he needed to make something. Cooking was usually a good way to get a handle on things, the focus and precision required was an excellent distraction and Edge would be able to lose himself in it until the simmering in his soul eased.
Or he would have, if the kitchen door hadn’t swung open directly behind him. “hey, before you get going on that, i was thinking—”
Stretch trailed off when Edge didn’t stop, pulling out his cutting board and setting his gathered vegetables around it. Stir fry was a possibility, it would take a decent amount of time and mindless focus.
Focus that splintered when Stretch draped himself heavily against Edge’s back, his arms dangling over Edge’s shoulders. “babe, listen for a sec.”
“Not now,” Edge shrugged, drawing away physically when Stretch resisted. The freshly washed vegetables surrounding his cutting board were all awaiting their fate with the chef’s knife and he selected a carrot, neatly julienning it to matchstick size pieces.
Stretch drew away but only went as far as the table, slouching down into a chair.
“do you really need to do that right now?” Stretch said with a touch of irritation that grated crossways over Edge’s own, raking against his already raw nerves. “can’t we just have leftovers or something tonight?”
“I’ve already started,” Edge said curtly. Bell pepper joined the carrots in a neat pile of their own and had Stretch known Asgore had planned this? Had he helped? Stretch didn’t like Asgore and made no secret of it, but he wasn’t above using what means he had to get the results he wanted. “At this point I may as well finish.”
“you wouldn’t have started if you’d listened to me,” Stretch snapped, “and those are fucking vegetables. i’m a shitty cook but even i know you can stick those in the fucking fridge for twenty-four hours without the nutrients leaking out. use the microwave for once, come out here with me for a while and fucking relax!”
“I don’t want to use the microwave,” Edge ground out. Jicama was next, the peel falling beneath his knife in one long ribbon. “I want to finish this.”
Stretch stood up, his chair screeching irritatingly on the floor and probably leaving a careless mark, and all Edge wanted was quiet, he wanted to finish this, he wanted the heat in his soul to settle—
“if you would come sit down for five fucking minutes and quit stressing out about everything, you might get to relax for once. you need to—” Stretch started and the fragile hold Edge had on his temper snapped.
“What I need is for you to get the fuck out of my kitchen,” Edge shouted, slamming down his knife, “and let me do this! I don’t need you floundering around in my way and if I wanted your opinion on my stress, I would ask! GET OUT!”
It worked, in a way. Stretch only looked at him, his eye lights shrunken to pinpricks. Without another word, he shortcutted out and Edge was alone.
One deep breath, another, and Edge picked up the knife again. He worked in silence, slicing the vegetables quickly at first. Slower as time dragged on, a trickle of coldness slipping through his anger, a faint prickle of regret that widened into an ache.
He couldn’t shake Stretch’s hurt expression away from the back of his mind, his wounded silence, and he was worried, Edge knew that, he did know. Stretch knew him, he knew how to pry his way beneath the layers of Edge’s restraint better than anyone but Red, knew the places in his psyche that were sore, barely healed, and when he wanted, he knew exactly how to press them.
Carefully, Edge set his knife down again and looked down at the neat piles of cut vegetables, the greens and oranges and purples, and almost he gave in to the temptation to sweep it all off the counter to the floor, to scatter it to the ground. Instead, he breathed a long, slow moment of cooling breaths. Then he took out containers and carefully filled them, setting them all in the refrigerator, before leaving the kitchen.
He went upstairs to their bedroom, walking through the empty room to the ensuite bathroom. Stripped off his clothes, distantly noticing with bitter humor that he’d gone into the kitchen and started working without even removing his suit jacket. Small wonder that Stretch had been concerned. Methodically, he hung up the suit, tossing the rest of his clothing in the hamper, and turned the cold water on full force.
Standing beneath the spray was like being pummeled with icicles but Edge stayed until his bones were numb and his teeth were chattering. Until control was starting to settle into his grasp again and his soul no longer burned in his chest like the beginnings of a fire.
It was only when he was dry and dressed, in jeans and a soft pullover, that he went in search of his husband.
Stretch was not difficult to find.
He was sitting in their backyard, smoking, the chickens pecking eagerly around his feet. It was a deceptively warm day, an anomaly in the middle of the ongoing winter and Stretch forwent a coat in favor of his normal hoodie, a newer one that Edge had given him for Gyftmas, with the body a deep black and only the sleeves and hood a bright, cheery orange. It looked good on him and Edge hadn’t even noticed he was wearing it earlier.
The ashtray at his elbow was overflowing, a testament to how long he’d been sitting out there.
Edge stepped out through the sliding door and stood in front of him with his hands in his pockets. Quietly, he said, “I’m sorry.”
“it’s okay,” Stretch told him on a cloud of exhaled smoke. He kept his gaze on the chickens, nudging at Nugget gently with the toe of his shoe. She pecked at his trailing, untied laces and found them to be unpalatable, returning to search the ground.
“It’s not. It is not okay for me to shout at you.”
Stretch only shrugged. “maybe, but i’m not about to die from it, either. shit happens and i’m a big boy, i can take it.”
“Rus,” Edge sighed. “I’m trying to apologize.”
“you succeeded. the whole ‘i’m sorry’ thing was a pretty big clue. how about you let me accept it?” He finally looked at Edge and the side of his mouth tipped up in a faint smirk as he tamped out his cigarette. ”but hey, if you’re going to wallow in guilt, you can do it over here. c’mere.”
He caught Edge by the forearm and tugged, drawing Edge in until he almost fell into his lap. It felt a little awkward; they usually did this the reverse way, Edge was much heavier than Stretch, his bones denser. But he wasn’t about to say no after biting his head off.
It felt better to be close to him, soothing, his cool fingers wriggling into Edge sleeves at the wrists to touch the bareness of the bones above his gloves.
Stretch nestled his face into Edge’s collarbone with a contented sound. “babe, it really is okay. you hardly ever snap, and i knew you were trying to wind down. i probably deserved it, should have left you alone to begin with.”
“You don’t deserve it—" Edge tried to protest.
“well, then, i understand, how about that? i know you have lv, babe. i may not have any,” and there was thin humor in his voice, buried into Edge’s pullover. “not this time, anyway, but i can understand it. i remember.”
Edge exhaled shakily, his fingers digging in to the shoulders of Stretch’s hoodie almost unconsciously. Stretch hardly ever talked about the resets that way. He mentioned seeing his brother dying on the rarest of occasions, after a nightmare usually, but to speak of Temmie or the human…
He hadn’t meant to dredge any of this up with his unruly temper.
“Love—" Edge started, choking a bit on it. Stretch drew back to look at him in alarm.
“woah, hey, it’s okay,” Stretch said. His fingers smelled like cigarettes when he reached up and traced Edge’s cheek bone, unpleasant but familiar, and Edge caught hold of his hand, pressing a kiss to his knuckles. “i’m good. i’m not perfect, never pretended to be. i can be pretty fucked up sometimes and i can fuck up things even more. but you’re still here.”
“Of course I’m still here,” Edge said, absurdly stung. “I’ve always told you I would be. I’m not leaving you, not for anything.” Stretch’s warm smile soothed a bit of that hurt.
“i know. you’ve told me that a lot.” He nuzzled a sloppy kiss against Edge’s teeth, drawing away before he could respond. “so i fuck up and i’m sorry. and you fuck up and you’re sorry. it’s okay. it’s gonna happen. don’t expect me to remember that every day,” Stretch said warningly. “i’ve got it for today, though, so we’re good. and i’m not the only one allowed to have a bad time. you’ve been pretty busy the last couple days. never a moments peace, eh?”
The invitation to talk was blatant. Edge shook his head, allowing himself a moment of weariness. He shifted to rest his chin on the top of Stretch’s skull, curling into him. “There are moments. Unfortunately, they serve as bridging points to the next catastrophe.”
“ain’t that the truth.”
“Until Humans accept Monsters, I suspect we’ll only see more problems. But then we will also see more solutions. It will take time and hard work, but we’ve made a great deal of progress already.” Edge hesitated, then added, firmly, “I’m going to speak to Asgore about adding another person to my team. Janice and I simply can’t do everything on our own anymore.”
“sounds like a plan. that’s my baby, always positive.” Stretch twisted away, giving him a sweet smile before he leaned in and gave him a real kiss. Edge sighed into it, allowed Stretch to press his tongue slyly, coaxingly, between his teeth. While he’d been staying late at work every night, they’d done nothing but sleep when he was home. The temptation for more was overwhelming.
He wasn’t partial to the location and Edge wasn’t about to let things get out of hand in their damn backyard. He preferred a certain amount privacy for lovemaking, familial kitchens notwithstanding.
But even if one of their neighbors chose that moment to peek over the fence, they wouldn’t be able to see him slipping a hand between them, rubbing his thumb down the hard length that was starting to strain the front of Stretch's pants, a testament to a fact Edge already knew. That having the person you loved sitting on your lap was a difficult thing to ignore.
The sound Stretch made, guttural and wanting, was an enticement and a goad as one. He was about to pull Stretch to his feet, it would only take a moment for them to shoo the chickens back into the coop, and their bedroom would still be filled with daylight, the better to indulge himself with a view of Stretch’s pretty bones.
He’d just shifted to stand when his phone went off.
Pained, Edge closed his sockets and let his head drop to Stretch’s shoulder.
“you may as well look at it,” Stretch said with resigned amusement. “the way things are going lately, it could be important.”
All too true. Edge slipped it out of his pocket and frowned to see the text was from Doggo, of all Monsters. He was one of the few who had chosen to remain in Old New Home when most of the others had left and he lived a few houses down from Red.
might want to look in on your bro, lotta noise coming from his place
His concern must have shown past his normally impassive expression because the amusement on Stretch’s face faded.
“what’s wrong?”
“I need to go,” Edge said slowly. “My brother is—"
He hesitated, unsure of what to say, of how much not to say. His lack of explanation didn’t faze Stretch.
“go,” Stretch said immediately. He nudged Edge off him when he didn’t stand. “go on, do what you need to for your bro. i can take care of myself for a little while.”
Involuntarily, Edge glanced down at Stretch’s lap.
Stretch gave him a rueful smile and didn’t bother closing his knees. Not that it would have hidden anything. “i can take care of that on my own too, if needs be. go,” his smile faded to seriousness, “be careful?”
He should probably find that insulting but then, Stretch had met his brother. Edge nodded and stole a last, lingering kiss before he went inside to grab his keys and his coat. He took a moment when he sat down in his car to breathe, testing his control, his focus.
Whatever issue his brother was having was going to take every bit of his hard-won peace, Edge was sure.
~~*~~
Despite the snow having mostly melted from Red’s driveway, Edge still parked on the street, walking up to the front door instead. He could hear the sound of clattering, breaking, shattering, even from here.
It was no surprise really that Doggo had chosen to text him rather than checking on Red himself. His brother didn’t have any LV but the fact that Monsters were still wary of him showed good sense in Edge’s opinion.
Red had never needed LV, even in Underfell.
Edge knocked briskly on the front door, loudly enough to be heard over the sounds of destruction. The sounds stopped and the silence within was more unnerving than the loud crashing.
He didn’t wait for his brother to answer. Instead, Edge tested the knob and found the door unlocked. He pushed open the door and stepped inside.
Instantly, he was surrounded by dozens of jagged bones, each dripping with virulent magic that Edge already knew would drain his HP, the KR reacting to his LV. He stood perfectly still, waiting, and looked at his brother.
Red was standing on the other side of the living room, his hand extended towards him, his left socket engulfed in vivid, glaring crimson. Edge couldn’t say for certain that Red was even aware it was him standing there.
The moment dragged on, the magic dripping from the bones landing on the floor with a hiss, spattering before it disappeared. Slowly, Red’s hand fell limply to his side, the glare of his single eye light dimming as the other slowly relit.
“hey, boss,” Red offered with a wide, feral grin. He staggered back a step, two, until he was leaning against the wall, then sagged down it until he was sitting, his legs sprawled out in front of him.
The destruction was impressive, even for Red. It looked like every dish in the house was scattered around the room in pieces. The sofa frame had collapsed in on itself, the cushions torn remnants of stuffing and springs, and the coffee table was little more than splinters. What he assumed was the mangled remains of the television was in a corner, and there were papers scattered everywhere like feathers from a pillow, books plucked free from their shelves and their pages torn free.
Edge only gave the room a brutally unimpressed look before stalking over to his brother. He kicked away as much of the broken glass as he could before he sat next to him, his elbows resting on his updrawn knees.
There was at least one thing unbroken, held in Red’s free hand and more than half-empty.
“Give me that.” Edge took the bottle away and examined the label, shaking his head in disgust. “You couldn’t get single malt?”
Red laughed silently, tipping his head back to look at the ceiling. “nah, they lock that shit up.”
“That’s never stopped you before.” He took a long swig and grimaced, handing it back and wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.
Edge didn’t usually drink alcohol; he preferred his thoughts to be clear, precise. It did not mean he couldn’t.
“What a pain in the ass you are,” Edge told him, thoughtfully, swallowing against the sharp burn of whiskey lingering on his tongue.
Red only laughed again and took a long pull off the bottle. His voice was rougher than normal, hoarse, and Edge wondered if he’d been screaming. “yeah, a pain in everyone’s ass,” he didn’t quite hesitate, hardly more than a pause when he added, “you know i’m fucking sans.”
Edge didn’t say of course, but it was a near thing. “Yes.”
“yessss,” Red let the word hiss free like a snake and said nothing else. He tossed the bottle from hand to hand, not even flinching when he finally missed and it crashed to the floor, whiskey gurgling from the opening. He sighed, watery and thick, “don’t matter. we can’t both have liabilities.”
Edge didn’t ask him what happened, didn’t ask for an explanation. He only rescued the bottle before too much could be sacrificed to the carpet. “Yes, we can.”
“bro—“
“We can,” Edge insisted. He took another drink and coughed, “Besides it’s too late now. Breaking things off won’t change how you feel.” He had learned that from experience, may as well attempt to let his brother learn from his mistakes.
“i can change how he feels,” Red said darkly. He snatched the bottle back and took a long swig, draining nearly half the remaining liquor.
Edge wondered if that were as true as his brother hoped. “Quit hogging that.”
“don’t worry, i got another.”
They sat in silence until the bottle was empty and Edge set it down gently amidst the scattered broken glass on the carpet, a dead soldier. Another appeared almost from nowhere, a different brand name that tasted just as foul.
Red was leaning heavily against the wall, his sockets closed. The shadows under them were deep, entrenched stains of darkness. “how’s the honey bun doing, anyway.”
“He’s fine,” Edge said, automatically. It was a struggle to keep his words from slurring. But thinking about Stretch was always warming, for his soul and currently, other parts as well. “He took up knitting recently.”
Red made a soft, amused sound, an unexpected invitation to continue.
“I wouldn’t say he’s very good at it,” Edge said, contemplatively. He hadn’t seen much of his husband’s attempts but what he had seen involved a decent amount of swearing. “So far he’s started on a project three times that I’m aware of and unraveled all of them to start over.”
“perfectionist.”
“Only when he wants to be. Knitting seems to fall into the same category as his experiments.”
“not all of them,” Red said, slyly. Sometimes Edge thought his brother was incapable of ignoring a chance to needle him.
“Don’t,” Edge said, but there was no heat in it. “Have another drink.”
Obediently, for once, Red did. “what else is he up to?”
“Why are you asking?” Edge asked suspiciously.
“talking about him makes you happy. so tell me more. just…keep talking.” His brother did not say please. It didn’t mean Edge couldn’t hear it.
Slowly, Edge did, telling his brother about Stretch’s different shenanigans, describing their trip to the Farmer’s Market and the dog shelter. Red only spoke to ask questions or add a pun, sharing the bottle back and forth as Edge talked until he was hoarse and kept talking, alcohol smoothing the normal sharpness between them.
Red didn’t mention Sans again but that was all right. Edge never expected miracles.

Chapter 4 - Interlude
Sans prided himself on being able to sleep anywhere, at any time. The occasions on which either Papyrus, or Toriel, or Frisk, or some random person had found him asleep in the most unconventional of places were too many to count. It was almost like its own kind of magic: no matter where he was, he only needed to close his eyes for a minute before he dozed off.
Tonight, Sans couldn’t sleep.
It was close to midnight and he was still sitting in the living room, bleary-eyed, slumped into the couch, staring at the TV without paying attention to the program, his phone next to him on the armrest. He had considered calling his brother about a dozen times since he left, but always held himself back. Sans didn’t buy the movie night excuse for one second, but it was clear that Papyrus wanted some time away from him. So much so that he had left for an entirely different universe.
Groaning, Sans buried his face in his hands. In hindsight, it had probably been a bad idea to leave Papyrus in the dark about the Royal Guard. (Actually, there were a lot of things that he probably shouldn’t have left Papyrus in the dark about.) Welp, no use dwelling on that now. The damage had already been done.
Sans grabbed the phone for the umpteenth time to check for any missed calls or messages. Nothing. He didn’t even know what he expected. His brother was probably busy having fun – if not watching a movie, then cooking, or playing board games, or doing whatever else with the tall, edgy skeleton he had befriended. At least, that was what Sans choose to believe, instead of contemplating everything that could have gone wrong in that dangerous alternate universe where Papyrus had run off.
(It didn't help that for a long time now, time had been steadily progressing forward in both their universes; the time loops – or ‘resets’, as Frisk had called them – were a thing of the past. If something did go wrong... there were no more do-overs.)
Sans fiddled with his phone. Should he send a text? Could he send a text without coming off as overprotective? Usually, doing nothing was his favorite pastime, but now he grew more and more restless with every minute spent not doing anything. Just checking in can’t hurt, he decided and typed out a quick message.
u ok bro?
He was about to hit ‘Send’ when the phone suddenly sprung to life.
Sans almost dropped it when the ringtone started to blare from the device, and scrambled to keep it from hitting the floor. One glance at the screen told him that it was indeed Papyrus calling.
“hey bro.” Sans tried to sound nonchalant as usual, despite his racing soulbeat. Why was Papyrus calling? Had something happened? Was it even Papyrus on the phone and not somebody else calling to tell him that–
“HELLO, SANS!” The cheerful tone of what was definitely his brother's voice dispelled the worst of his fears. “I AM SURPRISED YOU ARE STILL AWAKE! I HOPE YOU HAVEN’T BEEN STAYING UP FOR MY SAKE – I WILL BE STAYING HERE FOR THE NIGHT! WHICH IS WHY I CALLED TO LET YOU KNOW!”
Sans relaxed back into the couch. Everything was fine, of course it was. Papyrus was just having a sleepover. While Sans might not be entirely on board with his brother's choice of friends, this was much preferable to the more… unfortunate scenarios his tired mind had come up with.
“AND THERE’S ALSO A... SMALL PROBLEM.”
And with that, Sans was back to worrying again. “yeah?”
The long pause before Papyrus spoke again did nothing to reassure Sans. “WELL... HOW TO PUT IT... SANS, PLEASE DON’T FRET, BUT–“
If Sans hadn't been fretting before, he certainly was now.
“–WE MIGHT BE EXPERIENCING SOME MINOR, UM, TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES??”
“whaddaya mean?” Sans’ voice came out as more of a croak.
There was another pause before Papyrus said, in a smaller voice than usual, “THE MACHINE ISN’T WORKING.”
"wait, what?" Sans took a minute to process that. “you’re stuck in that hellhole?” he finally blurted out.
“IT’S NOT A HELLHOLE, SANS, DON’T BE RUDE!” Papyrus actually sounded offended on behalf of the alternate universe.
“i'm coming over.” Before his brother could protest, Sans had already taken a shortcut to the basement and was typing coordinates into the machine.
“SANS, I DON'T THINK THAT WILL WORK,” Papyrus commented through the phone. “LIKE I JUST SAID, OUR MACHINE IS OUT OF ORDER AT THE MOMENT, SO I'M AFRAID YOU'LL BE–”
“unable to connect,” Sans muttered, staring at the blinking line on the display screen that proclaimed the same message. His hand fell back from the control panel and hung useless at his side.
“WELL, YES. BUT WORRY NOT, BROTHER! WHILE I WILL ADMIT THAT THE SITUATION IS… LESS THAN IDEAL–”
“‘less than ideal’?” It wasn't like Sans to get worked up about anything, really, but this was about Papyrus, and he couldn't just let his brother brush off the danger he was in. “paps, you're stuck in a world of murderers and–”
“HEY, NOW YOU'RE BEING UNFAIR!”
An exasperated huff came through the speaker from a distance. “Hand me the phone, Creampuff.”
“WHAT? NO, I-”
A brief scuffle was heard before Fell’s voice came through the speaker much more clearly. "Comic. Calm down, and listen."
There was a commanding tone to the words that made Sans shut his mouth almost immediately. It was probably a skill that came with being second-in-command of the Royal Guard; Sans had heard this tone from Fell before. He still didn’t like it.
“The machine on our side is currently nonfunctional due to a power outage,” Fell continued. “There is no damage to the machine itself, as far as we can tell. Once the power lines are repaired, Rus will be able to return. Understood?”
Sans nodded automatically, not even thinking about the fact that this was a phone call and Fell wouldn’t be able to see his response. So… this wasn’t a long-term or permanent problem with the machine, then. Good, but it didn’t change the fact that Papyrus was stuck there now.
Fell sighed. “Your brother is not in any danger. I will– hey!” Another scuffle could be heard.
“AS I WAS ABOUT TO SAY BEFORE I WAS SO RUDELY INTERRUPTED,” Sans could almost hear Papyrus glaring at Fell, “THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO NEED TO WORRY! JUST THINK OF IT AS ME BEING ON A SHORT VACATION!”
“you never take vacations,” Sans pointed out, but the fight had already left him. There wasn't anything he could do, anyway.
“WHILE THAT MAY BE TRUE – IN THE HYPOTHETICAL SITUATION IN WHICH I WOULD, HYPOTHETICALLY, TAKE A VACATION, THERE WOULD BE NO NEED TO WORRY!”
That didn’t do much to reassure Sans, but it did manage to draw a dry chuckle from him. “alright. guess i’ll just leave you to your ‘vacation’ then, heh. try to come back in one piece, ok?”
“BUT OF COURSE! I WILL SEE YOU SOON, BROTHER.” With the tone Papyrus used, it sounded like a promise.
After another exchange of ‘see you’s and ‘take cares, the line went silent. Sans let out a sigh and sank back into the couch, dropping the phone on the cushion next to him.
It would be fine. Papyrus was a grown adult, a capable monster, and this wasn't his first time in that dark alternate universe.
He would be fine.
He would.

Ooooh my stars can you do more PTA Sans scenes?! I absolutely adore that AU!!
Sorry this took so long. Weeks of sickness is getting to me. Not to mention making up jokes can take hours.
Anyways…. PART 3 OF THE PTA SANS COLLECTION!
ENJOY
~Undertale~
Sans: *comes in* okay, what’s going on? Frisk has been late to five doctor’s appointments because the teachers won’t let them leave until i come get them.
Helen: *motions for him to sit down* I’m afraid we just can’t trust your child to leave the class anymore. He keeps writing fake notes just to get out.
Sans: *blinks and sits down* fake notes? whoa whoa, what? that doesn’t sound like them.
Helen: *nods* Yes, he’s quite the troublemaker. Not being her father, it’s clear you don’t know him as much as you thought. He makes fake doctor’s notes, clearly written by him.
Sans: well, how do you know? I always write their notes since Tori’s teaching.
Helen: Well, for one, it’s all types up lowercase. Probably so we don’t recognize her handwriting (he doesn’t seem too bright).
Sans:… typed?
Helen: Mmhmm. Typed up on a flimsy piece of paper. All lowercase and with bad spelling and grammar. And in Comic Sans no less! *slowly coming to realization* If he really thinks the teacher and…. I are dumb enough to let… that… pass…. *blinks*
Sans:…..
Helen:….
Sans: *sighs* y’know, it’s pretty hard being a married working mother when you’re single, unemployed, a skeleton, and most importantly a dude, but damn it, Helen…. Frisk and i donated fifty cans to the food drive. i think we deserve some respect here.
Helen: Well I’m head of the PTA, so there really is no-
Sans: how many cans did you donate, Helen?
Helen: That doesn’t really matter-
Sans: how many, Helen?
Helen:….. *looks down* Four.
Sans: really? wow. i would’ve though you would’ve had the time to donate more with how much time you spend bitching about my kid.
~Underfell~
Sans: *hands Frisk money* here’s twenty g. vending machine is around the corner. don’t go around spending it all in one fuckin’ place. now run along, ya little shithead.
Frisk: *snatches up money and runs off*
Daniel: *walking when Frisk suddenly races past him* Hey, watch where you’re going. *sighs* Little shithead.
Sans: *suddenly next to him* uh, what the fuck did you just call my kid?
Daniel: What? You call them that all the time!
Sans: yeah, it’s okay when i say it because they know i still fucking love them. when you say it, you actually fucking mean it.
Daniel: then maybe you shouldn’t speak to your child that way.
Sans: then maybe you should mind your own fucking business or else!
Daniel: Or else what? It’s your fault you don’t love your child enough!
Sans: *stops* oh… you fucker… *chuckles evilly* i’ll show you love, asshole. *disappears*
The Next Saturday
Daniel: *helping his young son onto his bike* Alright, Cody, today’s the day you’re going to learn to ride like all of your friends. *hands him his helmet* Now, it may be scary at first, and you may fall down a few times, but remember that I will be here to help you-
Cody: *puts on helmet* It’s okay, dad! I already know how! *rides off on his bike perfectly with a smile*
Daniel: *shocked* What? How did he-? When did he-?!
Sans: *rides by on his tricycle* ha ha asshole! i taught your kid how to ride a bike! you’re never gonna get that back! *rides off into the sunset*
~Underswap~
Sans: *finishes checking off the last name* AND DONE! THAT’S EVERYONE! *grins* GOOD WORK, EVERYBODY! THIS FUNDRAISER WILL MORE THAN HELP THE BAND GET NEW EQUIPMENT! SINCE MARIA’S CHILDREN RAISED THE MOST, THEY GET TOP PRIZES. *walks over and hands Maria a bone* HERE! A TOKEN OF MY ETERNAL GRATITUDE!
Maria: *smiles and takes it, shaking off how weird it is* Aw, thanks, Sans. I really appreciate it. Cindy had fun selling to all her friends.
Sans: WELL CINDY IS DOING AN AMAZING JOB! HERE, A BONE FOR HER AS WELL. *hands her a smaller bone* TELL HER THE PRIZES WILL BE HERE IN A WEEK.
Linda: Bones? Don’t you think that’s kind of weird?
Sans: *tilts head* I’M JUST SHOWING MY GRATITUDE. DO HUMANS NOT LIKE THAT?
Linda: It’s just kinda weird with all the bones. What’s with you monsters and your obsessions with bones? Or is that just a skeleton thing?
Sans: *thinks hard* I’M ACTUALLY NOT SURE, LINDA! I’VE ALWAYS THOUGHT IT WAS WEIRD THAT YOU HUMANS LIKE TO GET MARRIED THREE TIMES AND PULL THEIR CHILD INTO THEIR DIVORCE BATTLES THUS DRASTICALLY AFFECTING THEIR SCHOOL WORK AND MOTIVATION TO DO THE ACTIVITIES THEY LOVE SUCH AS BAND. OR IS THAT JUST A LINDA THING?
~Swapfell~
Sans: AS HEAD BOOSTER MOM-
Gloria: *aside to her friend* As you’ve proclaimed fifty times this meeting.
Sans: - I AM THOROUGHLY SATISFIED BY THE RATE AT WHICH WE WERE ABLE TO HELP FUND ADEQUATE  EQUIPMENT FOR OUR CHILDREN. NOW THAT ALL OF THIS HAS BEEN SETTLED, LET US DISCUSS SETTING UP THE STAGE ON THURSDAY TO GET READY FOR THE SHOW. I ASSUME IT MAY TAKE US A GOOD SIX HOURS TO GET IT READY.
Gloria: Wait- what?
Sans: WE NEED TO SET THE STAGE FOR OUR CHILDREN. WE MUST MAKE IT PERFECT; OUR CHILDREN SHALL ACCEPT NOTHING LESS.
Gloria: Six hours of setting up? Look, I don’t have time for that.
Sans: IT WILL BE IN THE AFTERNOON. YOU CAN’T SPARE YOUR TIME FOR AN HOUR?
Gloria: I still can’t make it. I have a busy schedule. Can’t we use some of the money from the fundraiser to hire a few people to do that.
Sans: THAT MONEY IS FOR THE EQUIPMENT! FINE. I SHALL TAKE YOUR CHILD TO THE PERFORMANCE AS WELL.
Gloria: E-excuse me?!
Sans: IF YOUR SCHEDULE IS SO BUSY TO WHERE YOU CAN’T MAKE IT EVEN FOR AN HOUR, YOU WILL SUEELY BE TOO EXHAUSTED TO TAKE YOUR CHILD TO THE PERFORMANCE THE NEXT MORNING. DO NOT DESPAIR. MY MUTT CAN EASILY TRANSPORT YOUR CHILD.
Gloria: You are not touching my son. Look, my schedule is packed tight and there’s nothing I can do about it.
San: GLORIA, YOU’RE A STAY-AT-HOME MOTHER RAISING ONE CHILD. I COULD GET CANCER AND DIE OF IT IN THE AMOUNT OF TIME YOU SPEND WATCHING “THE REAL HOUSEWIVES” IN A SINGLE DAY. IF YOU CAN’T SPARE A SINGLE HOUR, WHY ARE YOU IN THE PTA AND BOOSTER CLUB TO BEGIN WITH?
~Horrortale~
Sans: *sits down in front of the desk* so what’s the deal, Suzanne?
Suzanne: *folds her hands* I’m afraid it’s about Aliza.
Sans: what’d she do this time?
Suzanne: *pulls out a hand-drawn picture of King Asgore getting stabbed by a little kid* The teacher showed me this. Aliza drew it in her spare time; she’s starting to really scare the other children.
Sans: *looks at it and laughs* ha, that’s just Asgore, the former king, being slain by a human who condemned us to rot in the Underground and starve to death.
Suzanne: Why would she draw such a thing?!
Sans: the kid’s growin’ up. soon she’ll be old enough to follow the last one’s footsteps and slay the Undyne. i think it’s kinda her dream at this point. little rascal. kids, amaraite?
Suzanne: You-you actually encourage your child this to do this?!
Sans: hey hey, calm down. don’t worry, Tori and i have already sat her down and had the talk with her.
Sans: college comes first.
~Altertale~
Lillian: Oh, hey, Sans. How’s Kate doing in class?
Sans: *smiles* she’s doing very well. however, i have a few… concerns.
Lillian: *sits down* Concerns? What’s wrong? Is she misbehaving?
Sans: well… somewhat. she’s been spreading around very foul language as of late. swear words and the like. do you know where she could be hearing these words?
Lillian: Oh dear! I have no idea where she could have picked this language up. I’ll give her a grounding when she gets home. How bad is it?
Sans: she’s been saying these words every chance she gets. *turns around* Katie? can you come in, dear?
Kate: *pokes her head in and giggles* Fuck!
Lillian: Hey! Watch your fucking mouth!
Sans: *silent*…..
Lillian: What?
Sans: Lillian do you even have ears?
~Underlust~
Karen: Did I hear right? You’re signing up to be the Sexual Education teacher.
Sans: you heard right, babe. i thought that if it should be anyone, it should be someone with tons of experience and a scientific background.
Karen: That’s….. extremely problematic.
Sans: i kinda get where you’re coming from; you don’t want someone like me teaching your children. trust me, they’re in no better hands than mine.
Karen: Says the one with dozens of past sex partners and only one boyfriend.
Sans: says the one with three marriages and four children and yet somehow clearly not getting enough sex in her life.
Karen:……
Sans: and pfft. “dozens?” you underestimate me. smh, boo, smh.
~Echotale~
Martha: My child just had a cold, is all.
G: no, he has the flu. he needs to stay home. i thought i told you to get him vaccinated.
Martha: Oh what do you know?
G: *hands her his PhD*
Martha: *tears it up*
G: *pulls out another* i know what i’m talking about, Martha.
Martha: Wha- *tears that up as well*
G: *pulls another PhD out* i’ve won this game before, and i’ll win it again.
Martha: *snatches it up and crumples it* How do you have so many?!
G: i made sure to print, like, fifty before i got here. *pulls out two more*
Martha: *smacks them away* You’re insane!
G: *pulls out four more* you can’t fight the inevitable, Martha.
Martha: *backs away* What are you doing?!
G: *pulls out thirty more* *PhDs are all she can see* i’m gonna vaccinate the fuck out of your kids Martha, and they will live a healthy life.
~Outertale~
Anna: -and that’s why I believe every child should be given gluten-free lunches. This is what we should be spending our funds on, not a play about peace between humans and space monsters. It has good intent, yes, but these lunches are far more important!
Sans: *has been silent this whole ten minute period*
Anna: Sans? Are you even listening to me?
Sans: of course.
Anna: Your thoughts?
Sans: just missing the sounds of the cold vacuum of space. that’s all.
~Reapertale~
Elizabeth: *lying in bed, asleep* *eyes shoot open when she hears a creak*
Sans: *slowly rises from the ground and out of the darkness* greetings human mortal. my faithful messenger, Frisk, has told me of your ways. what is it you desire, human mortal?
Elizabeth: *eyes wide, shaking and sweating in fear* M-more coin f-for the schoolhouse? A-and a new writing slate?
Sans: very well. the contract has been sealed. you have five.
Elizabeth: F-five? Five what?!
Sans: no… make it four. *slowly sinks back into the darkness* *appears next to Frisk* this is probably the best thing i’ve done in centuries. alright, who’s next on the list?
~Dancetale~
Beatrice: *grabbing some brownies from the food table* *turns around and shrieks in surprise and drops her paper plate*
Sans: *breakdancing right in front of her*
Beatrice: *sternly* Sans, for the last time, I’m not changing my mind. We’re not wasting our funds on a dance club when they’ll never use it as a future skill.
Sans: *continues breakdancing*
Beatrice: Sans, you can’t keep doing this every time I refuse-
Sans: *breakdancing harder*
Beatrice: S-Sans, I-
Sans: *breakdancing intensifies*
Beatrice: S-stay away from my family-!
Sans: *just breakdancing* *only breakdancing*
~Aftertale~
Frisk: *made a science project featuring Geno and Sans, and how their existence proved the theory of multiple timelines*
Geno: *hops off the table once the science fair ends, pulling sticky notes off of himself*
Sans: *doing the same* first place, kiddo. we’re proud of ya.
Frisk: *smiles proudly*
Helen: *approaches and crosses her arms* Well it’s quite and achievement for an idea so absurd.
Geno: *pulls the last sticky note off of him* Excuse me?
Helen: *turns her head* I just believe Frisk is too much of an… overachiever. We already know he’s saved the world. Why should he rub it in everyone’s faces when he clearly has an advantage over everyone else.
Geno:… lady, i stand here as living proof of the existence of both multiple timelines and universes. i spent countless lifetimes within the Void in endless loneliness and agony, only to be released by this special kid right here. they deserve every award they get, especially when second place was an airplane model built by you, not your kid.
Helen: *cheeks turn red* What?! These are just harmful accusations!
Geno: Helen, i’m a firm believer that people truly can change, but we saw you double dip with Maria’s salsa at the meeting. we know you’re that kind of person.
~Machinatale~
Sans: *looks through the plans* Wait… we’re getting rid of the computer lab? Why?
Sharon: *looks over* Hmm? Oh, that’s just a request for now. We need it approved by the administrators. Children need to tear their eyes away from a screen and hold something real.
Sans: How else are they going to get all the information they need? They’re too young to earn smartphones.
Sharon: The library, of course.
Sans: Okay, yeah, but kids are only allowed to check out two books at a time. Why should they spend so much time trying to find a book with the information they need when the world’s database is at their fingertips?
Sharon: *sighs* They don’t need a screen to figure things out. They spend too much time on the internet.
Sans: They need computers to do the proper research from multiple sources, as well as print out papers. Research could be conducted within minutes, not hours.
Sharon: She can do that at the library. *scoffs* Of course you would be all over technology. You’re a robot. What makes you think you’re smarter than a loving parent?
Sans: Sharon, I have more processing power than modern day’s best calculators, and yet, somehow your bullshit still isn’t adding up.

Tumblr media
♦ Hi! It’s been a little while, hasn’t it!
♦ TL:DR; I’d like to start things up on Underfade soon, ideally sometime during the very end of the year or within the beginning of next year! My other blogs, such as Fadedtale, Fuwaribi and similarly, will continue to be on hiatus.
♦ But while we’re not back in action quite yet, but I’d love to give you all a status report and ramble a bit, if you guys have the time to spare!:
        -- UNDERFADE/FADEDTALE RELATED --
❥ What’s going on with your AUs? Are you going to be reviving them?
♦ I’d love to revive them, and I’m very much planning to do so!! I’m hoping I can get back to doing Sunday updates in very late December/early January, life permitting!
Of course, I need to add that I’ll be concentrating on Underfade first and foremost before doing anything else. Fadedtale, Fuwaribi and similar blogs of the past and future will be placed on hold until I’ve gotten far enough with Underfade. But with that said...
❥ What’s happening with Underfade?
♦ I’d like to get past the RUINS arc (finally, am I right?) before finally changing Underfade’s name.
That’s right: Underfade, as an AU name, is officially old news! It was a funny name at first, as my lack of English comprehension never knew that underfades were a hairstyle, but now I don’t think it quite translates what I want from this AU. Once the RUINS arc is over, I’d like to kick off things really going downhill for our main character by changing the title appropriately.
I’ll give you a hint on the new name it’ll have; it’s been the title of this blog all along!
Otherwise; I have to be honest. I’m not happy with how I’ve paced the story at the start, but I have no intentions on changing what I’ve established. I enjoy having Frisk react to and obtain knowledge and capabilities thanks to the things anons suggest, so I will not be taking that away!: however, Underfade has always had a goal in mind, so I’ll try my best to write and pace things better with that goal as a focus.
Whether that goal continues to stay the same, or whether that changes due to others’ suggestions... we’ll see how that goes with this upcoming revival! Nonetheless, I look forward to working with everyone in the future! o9
❥ What’s happening with Fadedtale?
♦ Fadedtale will be running on a longer hiatus than Underfade.
I’d like to establish a few more things in Underfade before being able to, essentially, tell two stories at once. Additionally, there are aspects of Fadedtale that I’m deeply unhappy with and would love to change as soon as possible -- so if anything? Fadedtale will be undergoing an extended hiatus, followed by less-than-gentle tinkering-slash-arc for good measure, and then the blog would be open for RPs and asks of all sorts.
To be clear: Fadedtale will be undergoing an arc, in a similar format to the way Underfade is formatted, before being reopened to interactions. If people were around for the event I had with Fadedtale’s Chara reveal, it will be similar to that. I hope people will be able to have fun with it when it happens!
       -- UNDERTALE RELATED --
❥ CIN, CIN, CIN, MAD MEW MEW
♦ ohmygod Mad Mew Mew
-- I, I don’t own a Switch, so I haven’t been able to see anything regarding Mad Mew Mew beyond social media. But I was VERY EXCITED about her as she was making her debut on Tumblr!
❥ CIN, CIN, CIN, DELTARUNE
♦ OH MY GOD 𝔻 𝔼 𝕃 𝕋 𝔸 ℝ 𝕌 ℕ 𝔼
-- In all seriousness!
(A.) While I’ve never stopped working on Underfade and Fadedtale things, Deltarune has absolutely revived my drive to roll my sleeves up and get things done on here.
(B.) While many headcanons regarding the Undertale universe for my AUs have changed in response to Deltarune, I’ve every intention on respecting what I’ve revealed prior to my hiatus and what these AUs have had determined for them. Essentially, Deltarune’s revelations changes nothing about what’s to come and why things are that way.
(B.2.) -- However, as Fadedtale actively works with alternative universes much more openly than Underfade, I may make an exception on those grounds to switch stuff around. The abovementioned changes must take place before this, however.
(C.) Kris Deltarune is a huge favorite. Please talk to me about them on my personal Tumblr or, if already in possession of it, on Discord.
(C.2.) While I’d love to kick up a Deltarune blog (coughKrisblogcough), I will be holding off until I get a lot of Underfade and Fadedtale content out before indulging appropriately. Unless people are okay with a very lazily run and sketchy blog that barely updates, then by all means.
      -- GENERAL NEWS --
❥ How’ve things been?
♦ Admittedly, pretty up and down. 2018 has had some incredible highs, namely my college graduation and the completion of my thesis film, as well as some heavy lows -- which I will not go into detail. This year’s very much felt like a step back for each step forward in many regards, but some things don’t change at least!
❥ What have you been up to lately?
♦ deviantART, mostly! Tumblr queueing, secondly. Writing stories, both Underfade/Fadedtale related and original whenever I’m not drawing. And, looking for work in real life and keeping my head above water, whenever I’m not online, ah ha :’D
I’m semi-active on Discord, usually!! This year hasn’t been the kindest on my mental health, so I’m sorry if I ended up ignoring a lot of messages between now and the past year. I’ll do my best to answer any messages in the future.
❥ I want to talk to you! How do I do that?
♦ Discord’s your best bet!! but if we don’t share a Discord server or if we haven’t RP’d prior to my hiatus, I’m afraid that option’s unavailable. My personal tumblr, skybluescarf, your next best bet!
-- That should be all for now! Thank you all for your time and patience.
I’ll see you all later!

Okay, time to talk
After reading the comments in my last post about the activity cease, i realized i wasn’t being clear enough. I apologize if someone got concerned about me and if you got the wrong idea, i’m clarifying a couple things.
Why are you leaving? Did something happen?
I’m not going anywhere and no, nothing happened. I meant to say i can’t draw that much anymore, i’ve lost most of my drive to do so, and i don’t know what type of content could get me back into it. I still read Undertale and general BL/Yaoi content but i can’t put together any ideas. This blog might turn into a scrapbook that i won’t update very often and that won’t be entirely consistent or single-themed. It could turn into a blog for mostly reblogs too. I could simply walk away little by little until i have nothing left to share. I can’t tell rn. I tend to change, that’s why my sona is a Polymorph.
Will you still draw?
Yes. But this blog has always been dedicated to ships and BL/Yaoi. I’m getting slower every day when it comes to draw that, and there’s days i just don’t want to touch a pen. When i have an idea, i sketch it because that’s already natural to me, but what if i say i haven’t had any ideas for this specific blog in the last month?
Are you deleting this blog?
No. It will stay the way it is, my stories will remain here, i will remain here, at least for now, you can still talk to me and ask me anything you want.
As i said, you’re free to unfollow, but you’re also free to stay around and see what happens next (if it happens) even though i don’t know it myself.
Maybe you just need a break!
Believe me, i’ve tried. I know myself enough. It’s been a month or more since i’ve lost most of my capacity to enjoy drawing. It has become mentally painful unless i have a very solid idea. Last time it happened with my writing, and before Undertale it passed at least four or five years since i was able to write more than two text lines.
Do you have more blogs?
Yes, yes i do because i divided my content in different “genres”. That is not the reason i’m letting this blog aside. I have a NSFW blog, an original art blog, and a webcomic blog that i might try to get back to when the next year starts. I’m still uncertain about all of them because my motivation is so drained, but they fulfill other type of roles for me and the themes of it aren’t as exhausting to work with as this blog. I’ll probably put energy into keeping them going.
Are you leaving forever?
Forever is a big word. I don’t know when or how i could turn back into my mindset to draw three artworks a day or write a full fanfic/story in a week. It might not happen again, it may take another five years like the last time i stopped writing *shrugs* Who knows?
I have a very capricious creativity after all.
To all the support comments left in the last post, thank you. I apologize i can’t create anymore content for you at the moment, but it was fun while i was able to. Thank you.

The Kings Beneath The Mountain - Fic Questions
SOOOO...
@audaciousanonj asked a few questions, and then @rabbitpietale decided to challenge me to do ALL the questions for this fic, so I’m doing all the questions for this fic.
Please send me questions for not-this-fic.
I’ll put it under the cut. It’s long.
1: What inspired you to write the fic this way?
I was in an angst mood and started writing for a few hours and ended up with a huge, disconnected mess. A week later I decided to publish the first part since it was pretty solid and could stand on its own. Then I made the mistake of trying to continue before I was really ready for it.
I don’t really remember the exact inspiration for the first night of mad typing. It was probably a migraine. That’s the cause of most fics I write down.
2: What scene did you first put down?
HONESTLY? It’s a scene way in the future. Like... 20 chapters ahead if it continues at the pace I want to? I’ve got doubts about going down that route for a few reasons, so there’s a chance the fic will divert before it ever gets there, but it’s... uh... it’s really not pleasant.
Maybe if I do divert I’ll spin that off into another fic. I do really like the scene. I just... I dunno. Self doubts.
3: What's your favorite line of narration?
It’s a paragraph, not a line, but this:
Undyne would have known what to do. She knew all sorts of things about magic, and about Asgore, too! She knew how he handled things, the way he made it all work. This was knowledge he desperately needed now. And it just would have been lovely hear her stories and share a cup of tea! (Papyrus himself hated tea, but he drank it all the time now. Asgore must have had good reason for drinking the stuff. Which flowers did he use again…? He was so forgetful lately.) They didn't have to spar or cook or do any of the stuff they used to. They could just chat or walk around the garden and reminisce about older, better times. His joints hurt so much; that sounded more appealing. She'd probably think it was boring, but he could make it fun! She could play piano for him and he could try to sing along. They should have done that more. It was fun. Or maybe they could watch some of those baby cartoons together. He didn't know which one was her favorite, and he felt now that he'd really like to know.
I just love their friendship so much and it hurts knowing how much he missed her and how much he was ignoring about his own self-destruction while still thinking about her opinions and ways to spend more time with her.
I also like this ultra secret future snippet:
Creativity was always strongly associated with humans, and for good reason.  Papyrus had seen so many old maps and books about human buildings and architecture. If, with unlimited time and resources, you asked a single human to build you two great cities, you would get exactly that: two cities. Different streets, different buildings, different names. A monster, on the other hand, would just build the same city twice. After all, the first was fine, wasn't it? There was no reason to betray tradition-- even if it was a tradition of just a few short days.
There’s another actual line that might be my favorite but it’s spoilers.
4: What's your favorite line of dialogue?
Of what’s currently written:
“WOWIE, UNDYNE! I DIDN'T KNOW THERE WERE FRIEND RULES!” “OBVIOUSLY! That's rule number two of the Friend Rules!!” “AND WHAT'S NUMBER ONE?” “‘Don't talk about Friend Rules!’” “BUT YOU JUST--!!!”
I also like:
COOLSKELETON95: THERE ARE LOTS OF THINGS FOR BABIES THAT ARE STILL VERY GOOD FOR GROWN MONSTERS! LIKE MILK! AND DEADLY SPIKES!
ALPHYS: * ummmmm * spikes!?
COOLSKELETON95: OF COURSE! KIDS LOVE SPIKES!!!
There’s a conversation way down the line that I love (part of the sequence that might get cut that I mentioned) but the whole thing is spoiler-town.
5: What part was hardest to write?
The next chapter. (:
I’m serious. It’s awful. I thought  I would be able to get it done months ago! It’s not really all that hard, it’s just finding a balance, because the way the scene plays out really determines the direction of the story in a lot of ways. It’s just the chat with Undyne, it’s not some big surprise, but it’s hard! It doesn’t seem to want to work out right! And I get overwhelmed when I try to work on it.
The dinner with Sans was really tough, to, and the conversation that followed dinner. I didn’t want to give too much away from what Sans was thinking or what he’s aware of and that made it pretty tricky getting the dialogue to not go the wrong way.
The brothers actually wanted to talk things out and this is an Undertale fanfiction. It cannot be allowed.
6: What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?
It’s really long.
And uh... aside from Papyrus and Alphys friendship showing a bit it hasn’t really reached any of the “different” parts yet.
Fun fact though: pretty much every detail of the King Papyrus ending Papyrus came from is the reverse of the details of my other (planned) King Papyrus fic Observe:
TKBTM:
Fell down 9 months in
Aborted genocide run
not Frisk’s first rodeo
features at least 2 timelines
Papyrus banned himself from sleeping
Papyrus has near-perfect reset memory (from origin timeline to new timeline)
Flowey died in Origin timeline
KPCV:
Takes place 1 year into reign
“Coward” run
the first Frisk run
the only Frisk run
Papyrus sleeps whenever he can he gets it now
No reset memory, only deja vu
Flowey lives
7: Where did the title come from?
It’s a reference to Asgore’s intro-to-battle music, which translates to The King Beneath The Mountain. Only there’s plural kings. Because Papyrus is also a king.
It’s really clever, you see. I’m really good at names.
8: Did any real people or events inspire any part of it?
Naw, not this one. This one is just pure self-indulgent fulfillment of my Papyrus angst needs.
9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?
Not really! There’s a lot of scenes that I changed or cut and by the end of it there may be a very different ending than the self-indulgent trash I was aiming for but right now its not that far.
Here’s a cut part of the scene where Sans and Papyrus are goofing off after Papyrus throws a glove at Sans’s face. Originally he missed:
“i feel so attacked right now. i better get going before you start throwing your boots too. ‘m weak, not sure my sole can handle it!”
“ARRRGHHH!!!” Sans had shortcut a short distance away before the shoe could properly land, as both knew he would.  They’d played this game many times, but it never got old. If anything, it only got better with time. It was hard for Papyrus to maintain his look of great offense while he was holding back a giggle. He started to chase after him, using his magic to prevent himself from tripping from having only one shoe.  “GET BACK HERE!!”
“i wouldn’t do that! you’re running a temperature!” Sans dodged out of the path of the second shoe before it even came close. “later!” Sans yelled from his spot down the road, then shortcut out of sight once more, this time for good.
Papyrus smiled as he floated above the ground and gathered up the strewn pieces of his gear.
10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story?
There’s no pairings here besides maybe one or two if-you-squints in the future. And one of those squints is... really not a healthy relationship if you read it as a relationship. Please don’t ship that.
11: What do you like best about this fic?
This isn’t clear yet but it’s super self-indulgent on my favorite tropes.
12: What do you like least about this fic?
This isn’t clear yet but it’s super self-indulgent on my favorite tropes.
13: What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn't listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?
hmmm....
You know, I don’t really listen to music when I write. It doesn’t work. (Conversely, I MUST listen to music while I draw). I can’t remember what I was listening to around the time of writing, since music usually plays a role in brainstorming.
Maybe a nice, soft, sad orchestral ASGORE. Or if it exists, a soft, sad, orchestral ASGORE/Bonetrousle mashup.
14: Is there anything you wanted readers to learn from reading this fic?
Sleep is healthy.
15: What did you learn from writing this fic?
“Nope! Still can’t handle longfics! A pity!”

Undertale Comic, Now or Later Question...
Thank You, and Happy Hunting or well Questioning (so to speak). And Welcome to the world of the Undertale Comic ‘Shattered Remnants’
(Skip down to the Italicized portion for the actual question to Undertale and fans of undertale comics, though anyone can be involved with asking questions)
Hey everyone, man the last year was rough on me. Not only have I failed to post my fanfictions and art from DA and Fanfiction on here, but I’m falling behind on doing the same to AO3.... Anyways that’s not why I’m here or what’s important to say...
I’m in the process of making an Undertale comic, having recently come into the fandom. I was well inspired while making a fanfiction into creating a comic based around certain events in my fanfiction, but standing as it’s own story that will separate/detach itself from the fanfiction I’m writing into an entirely new story and narrative.
However, with that said. Though I’m not a fan of such (of personally doing so) I often include OC’s in my work as I feel I can’t really claim something as my own like a story and even art without having something that I own in it. This is my personal beliefs towards myself and the way I work when I go to write stories (trust me I’ve tried my hand at not doing this and attempting the opposite, but I always seem to back off last minute and add a main character eventually that I own)
Though in this case of both my comic and fanfiction it’s sorta necessary otherwise the story I created wouldn’t make sense without the characters I own… Or frankly even exist.
If you're curious the story centers around Frisk’s family above ground (from earth) and what exactly transpired with them. What has occurred in the time of his disappearance and what efforts the community at large are giving towards finding the missing child. I came to the conclusion to write this, as besides seeing a room at the end of the game in the neutral run, there isn’t much if at all that we can actually perceive about his life above ground. Besides the facts that are revealed by his room and that he can easily accept the idea to be adopted. There isn’t much after the fact that we can surmise. E.G. is his family alive? Abusive? Dead? Is Frisk in fact an orphan? None of this is known. Although it’s widely accepted (or so I’ve seen) that he’s in fact an orphan. I’m still led to wonder what in fact happened to his family that would lead him to a place such as Mount Ebott. And thus this story was born. It delves into that idea of his family, and what consequences or events have occurred in the city/town he once called home since the time of his disappearance. For years I was a criminology major, I had to study the mental, physical, and community effects of children going missing. As well as those infamous cases that go national. How media likes to find people to condemn, and how sadly communities on their own do the same. It’s a hard reality what happens in these cases. It became something of interests when wondering these questions for myself and considering what in fact would a child rather Frisky, going missing who may not have family left look like.
The comic itself differentiates itself from the main story at the climax of the first act and centers itself more into the middle of the second act of my story. Where it has become it’s own narrative with the same characters and only sharing the background with the original fanfiction. Although, it may have a few differences in even the background (as I’m making the comic like I said entirely it’s own story). As stated above, the comic centers itself around the events after the main team/group found themselves in the underground world seeing it has no official name I called it ‘Underlin’ (Under-l-in) The team by unfortunately lamentable circumstances have been separated in this deadly underground hell. That’s all I’m actually giving for now. I feel giving too much will spoil the story. Or at least where we begin in the comic, and how I move about the other spectrum of the fanfiction. And besides I want to see what questions you send in, as I may use those to give more info on the story itself. However, I infer that you please don’t ask questions intentionally about plot or stuff to do with the main story just the characters here themselves. As that will be answers later for you. Although, you can ask about them and characters in Undertale, like how they would likely interact with each other, stuff like that no biggie (I’m not limiting the reactions to just the oc characters, as I will happily include Undertale characters reacting to possibly certain things they say just as well or in classic Sans fashion interrupting the point for example (I won’t give away what I plan on characters doing, after all that will ruin the fun). Just don’t expect them (or have me write the characters responses) to give away any specific crucial plot details. Those will come later revealed in the stories I’m telling themselves. This is really all just for fun and kicks while I’m working on the first few episodes of the story and also the little mini episode comic that I made to go with the main story just for kicks. As I sit creating this, expanding the intro, and even having one or two minor spin offs that I’ll post around the time of the first chapter/episode/prologue episode. I began to realize today that Unlike the fanfiction (which will be slower on updates then probably the comic itself) I’m probably posting this without people getting a full depth of my characters. Most of whom for the sake of the comic will hang more as memories in the background. Except maybe a select few for when I need them and one that is obviously in the forefront with the main characters. Still each of them have reasons of importance in the comic. Considering this, before I post the story or even a sub story connected to it in comic form.
Would you guys like me to do a little ‘Question and Answer Panel’ with the characters to get to know these OC’s a little better?
I know often people do this after somethings become popular. I feel using this method here would better prepare people for the characters, to relate with them when they come around then just being blindsided by a new individual in the picture (I feel like Sans would make that a joke considering picture and comic could go hand in hand as a joke, couldn’t think of one at the moment of posting though so just pointed it out). Anyways, I’ll open it for you guys to ask whatever questions you want. I’ll give maybe a week if I get enough interests/questions (depending on how quickly I get responses) and at most a month to send questions aimed at specific oc’s or all of them to get an idea of who they are. I did this because I feel drawing the characters reactions to the questions would be more fun then me just making a dull description because interesting things can come out of it.
Anywho, out of the few OC’s I have, the ones who are mostly my “main” OC’s are:
~Dalean ‘Dale’ Bentley Kewish
~Benji ‘Ben’ Rufus Euphoria
~Kyleen ‘Kyle’ Olive Tenison
~Nova Jordan ‘N.J.’ Leander Kewish
And MAYBE… ~Douglas ‘Doug’ Quinten Carter
With one or two question slot that you’ll hopefully find adorable for: Baby and Pupkin ‘Buppie’ and no that last one is not a misspelling.
Can’t wait to hopefully see questions you have to ask for these characters that I can make a little fun comic style for them to answer. No question is off limits (Except anything vulgar, please I’m trying to keep it PG-PG-13 at most) Remember there’s no stupid questions, only stupid decisions (Couldn’t think of anything better. And yes-yes that does make me sound like a pretentious teacher now doesn’t it) Have fun asking questions. I’ll have character drawings out soon of each character so we can exclude questions of what they look like and such from the question poll.
Thank You, and Happy Hunting or well Questioning (so to speak). And Welcome to the world of the Undertale Comic ‘Shattered Remnants’ And So It BEGINS...
Always Yours, Blurr’s Girl Blazin’ Blaze

Oh jeez, I didn't actually think I'd win. Okay, uh, if it would be okay, the big four skelebros finding out that their s/o (humanoid) actually had like, huge feathery wings, +they wore a big cloak to hide them? They can fly w/ them, and all that jazz
(i do love that about raffles - chance is a fickle thing, but wonderful at the same time! this is an interesting prompt - i haven’t spent too much time considering the implications of such a person in the undertale/au worlds, so i’ll interpret it as best i can as my mind tends to very naturally consider the implications thereof.)
(in any case, congrats on winning the raffle - i hope you like it!
UT Sans:
You shouldn’t underestimate someone like the classic Sans.
Truth be told, your wings were aching for how long you had been hiding them - nearly two days straight now, without a moment of being able to shake them out of your cloak. Thankfully it had it’s own magical properties that completely sealed in your wings, even for a passing gust of wind that may lift it - but the sensation was pins and needles as time dragged on, and if you could feel every feather in them every one of them would all be aching. But at last, Sans had fallen asleep in the field near on the blanket laid out for you and your friends’ picnic, and the others had disappeared in the forest, looking to play a game or gather wood - or both.
Your shoulders were on fire, your wings just longing to catch an updraft and stretch out, just for a minute, then you would be good to tuck them away again.
… Sans has been a light sleeper for a long time yet, though.
So when he felt the strange hitch in magic near him, even something so low and nearly unnoticeable, it woke him up. He would’ve ignored it… if not for the sudden soft fwump of your unfurled wings catching that first beat of free air.
His eyelights disappeared as he watched you spiral into the sky, effortless and joyfully light in your movements.
Granted, you nearly fell out of the sky when you looked back down and caught him staring at you, but still.
He has so many questions, and while he may wait until a more private time to ask them, you won’t get out of them for long. In the end, he’s intrigued, and once he guarantees all is well, he’ll realize his infatuation has grown only stronger. It won’t be long before you’ll find yourself figuring out how to take him out on flights in secret, both of you feeling the most free you’ve ever been while gliding under the clear night sky.

UT Papyrus:
He was really just trying to be hospitable.
You were always wearing that cloak. He caught you on longer days spent together rubbing at your shoulders, a distant expression of discomfort on your face - and then other times you fiddled absently and insistently with the clasp, as if you wanted nothing more to take it off and relax. He wanted that for you, too! The way your face lit up whenever you were at ease around him, that delightful laugh of yours that had his magic betraying his adoration across his cheekbones, the sharp way your mind worked out puzzles and riddles with him - he loved it most when you felt welcome and at peace, so surely he could relieve you of that cloak, at least in the safety of his home.
Granted, you always refused when he offered… but still.
That’s why he’s the Great Papyrus - he’d find a way to put you at ease, one way or another.
Yes, even if that way happened to be sneaking up on you while you were at the stove, with a grace and stealth completely unbefitting a seven-foot-tall skeleton. Before you could react, his fingers had easily slipped around you to your front, undid the mechanism of your clasp, and he slipped your cloak off with the graceful flair of a matador.
He promptly was sent flying into the living room by the nearly violent explosion of your wings into reality.
You screamed at the sudden sensation and almost sent spaghetti flying right after him - but horrified realization dawned over you just as quickly, and you took several steps forward to check on him - but were stopped by the instincts of countless years of hiding.
Thankfully Sans wasn’t home, because as Papyrus recovered and jumped back to his feet and anxiously hovered without approaching in turn,  it quickly devolved into a shouting match of mutual worry and love and horrified apologies.
Of course, Papyrus is in no way upset at this revelation - he understands your reasoning all too well, and while he desperately wants to shout to the entire Undernet about this wonderful new thing he found out about his s/o, he’ll keep your secret the safest it’s ever been with another soul.
… Also, I hope you like getting your feathers preened, because it won’t be long before Papyrus handily claims the sole right to massage your tense wings and gently check your feathers while you stay at his house.
UF Sans:
To be honest, your secret wasn’t much of one for long with Red. If you’re his s/o, you both lean heavily towards loving physical affection, at least in private - and you quickly figure out that with both of your trust issues, if you want to make this last, you’ll need to come clean about this. Perhaps you were friends for a long time first before caving into your attraction for him (and vice versa), perhaps not - but either way, you armed yourself with your resolve and feelings for him and managed to pull him into seclusion in his room one afternoon.
He started out with his usual dirty flirting, and tempted as you were to put it off just one more day, you were able to step back from him with the reassurance to him that… well, stars above you cared for him, and if he trusted you enough to let you so deeply into his life, then you were damn well going to do the same.
Your fingers flipped undone the mechanism of your clasp, and your cloak fell to the ground. Your eyes closed as relief and tension momentarily bled out of you and your wings unfolded into reality, still bent to avoid knocking anything open, but spread enough to span more than half the room.
When you finally felt brave enough to open your eyes, you caught Red staring at you, hands hovering half-outstretched, his eyelights burning a bright crimson that matched the softer glow of his cheekbones.
… A full, painfully silent minute later, you had to be the one to speak up first.
It all ended up coming out as if pouring from a spout that you had simply broken off, his ongoing silence and unreadable but not outright discouraging expression making it far easier to simply reveal more about your history and at why you were hiding - and why you were revealing this to him now, accidentally turning into you tripping over yourself as you confessed just how strongly you trusted him-
He finally cut you off, his face blazing crimson in a way that didn’t at all match his serious and conflicted and adoring expression. He’d simply pull you into a hug, his hands skating over your wings for a moment and drawing a shiver down your spine.
… After a bit of time that simply devolved into exploration, he’d ask a few simple questions about it, but just to round out his knowledge and satiate (for the moment) his building curiosity. He knows too well the need to hide everything that could mark you as vulnerably different, though, so he’s got your back in ways you’d never even dare to consider asking.
If anyone tries to blackmail you… well.
They’d turn up missing soon enough.
UF Papyrus:
He’d held a respect for your mysterious refusal to remove your cloak the entire time he’d known you. Even at your first meeting and his brash attitude, a part of him begrudgingly felt admirably towards your standards on your appearance in that facet.
Once you’re his s/o, however, he finds the curiosity simply eating him alive. He has standards, though - and damn, you respect his penchant for the black and red and spiky, so he can’t quite put himself up to demanding you take it off to satiate his curiosity - really, he’s never seen you without it, and even he has removed his signature red scarf around you on the heated occasion…
… Well. That doesn’t mean he won’t tail you once he figures out your scattered weekly sessions to disappear into the woods. You never go at the same time, and never by the exact same route, but always for hours on end, and always with a notable relief in the buildup of tension in your shoulders and back upon your next time seeing Edge.
He is nothing if not sharply observant - even as loud and harsh as he is, there aren’t many details that escape him. So even if this doesn’t have to do with your strange cloak and a few other odd pieces of behavior, he’ll at least figure out what you’re doing out there in the forest, for better or worse.
It actually takes him several weeks’ worth of attempts to track you the full way - you nearly caught him the first two times, and a few more following that you simply somehow managed to lose even him.
It was nighttime, the week he finally followed you for the full hour and a half you trekked into the woods, the week he finally caught you step into a clearing halfway around the mountain, far from any other sentient soul -
It was nighttime when he saw your cloak slip to the ground, when he saw your wings unfurl under the washed-out light of the moon and stars, when he saw you crouch down for just a moment as your wings shook out, fanned - and when he saw you take to the skies.
For nearly an hour he watched you, disappearing on occasion in low banks around the safe side of the mountain, only to return and circle high, high above, free and unrestrained in these moments you stole for yourself.
You nearly decked him in the ribs when he cleared his throat behind you after you landed.
The following moment, as you caught your fist before it made contact, as you watched his brow ridge draw upwards, as your wings fluffed up in horror and instinct, you thought you could truly feel your soul drop out of your own chest.
… He didn’t mince words, in the end, asking you several questions, which you found yourself nearly shell-shocked answering as plainly as he asked them. Your mind caught up quickly enough, and you knew that it was make or break either way - he’d either accept all this, or you’d be on the run… again.
After just ten more minutes, you found yourself once more silently staring at Edge. You had crossed your arms, and were holding your ground, despite your racing heart - you knew him well at this point, knew how many decisions and options and outcomes he was thinking through at breakneck pace as he returned your hard gaze.
When he reached out and took your hand, you forgot how to breathe.
When he slowly, so very slowly, lifted your hand to press your fingers to his mouth in a semblance of a kiss, you felt your chest constrict with the sudden flood of far too many feelings.
He smirked then, a devilish look to his flashing gaze, and said that he always knew you were more than most fools bargained for.
US Sans:
It might’ve been a bad idea to pass out on the couch with him after a long, late night of watching a certain old sci-fi series that he had been unable to come across Underground.
You were both the cuddly sort when it got down to it, and ever the gentleman as he was he had provided you with blankets and pillows and the most absurdly wonderful and gentle scalp massages you had ever experienced - so it was only natural that you’d end up so comfortable as to fall asleep, your head tucked just perfectly near his collarbone, his arms wrapped around you as you both nestled closer in your dream-ridden states.
You were both rudely awoken when your wings flared outwards - promptly shoving you both off the couch with the force of their reappearance.
As it turned out, Blue was apparently inclined to fiddle with whatever kaid within hands reach when he slept… including your specially-made clasp.
So there you were, straddling Blue with your hands planted on either side of his head, your wings flared in instinctual search for better balance. His eyesockets were wide, his bright blue starry eyelights trained on you with a bewildered fierceness you were certain neither of you were expecting at this hour, or this situation -
He blushed slowly cyan as you blushed a deep red of your own.
So very, very slowly, he lifted his hands. You had plenty of time to move out of the way, and you knew he intended it as such - but you remained willingly frozen as he relaxed just a tad more and his arms shifted just that little bit more…
You shuddered as his fingers slid down your feathers. You bit your lip and colored a little more at the look on his face as his eyelights searched your expression for any pain, any sign of discomfort - but he found none, and with a small, encouraging forward shift from you, he gently continued his exploration.
The words of adoration and praise, so soft, gentle, and private, had you burying your face into his shoulder as his deep chuckle ran further thrills through you.
At his almost surprisingly gentle questioning, you began to explain your background, and how you had to hide them, and the nature of your cloak - his attention never wavered from you, and as you talked he continued exploring your wings. You paused on occasion, redirecting or instructing him, and by the end of your explanation he felt like an expert with his soothing touches to your ever-tense wings.
He swore he would keep your secret - and with the twinkle in his eye, you had a definite feeling that you were facing a future where an incredibly cunning skeleton was going to find increasingly clever ways to help you spread your wings in private, with his careful eye and hand to provide every kind of support you could dare hope for.
US Papyrus:
He’s anything but inclined to push you on revealing whatever it is you're hiding, honestly. He has his own secrets, far too many to be healthy, but as you respect his he respects yours - it’s clear you have no ill intention through the bright way your soul shines, so he trusts you well enough.
… You realize, though, that even as his s/o… things won’t develop further unless you both place further trust in one another. And while you desperately want to know what it is that haunts his nightmares and hides behind the darker shadows of his gaze when something threatens the few things he cares about… well, you won’t push him without showing him that you are as open with him. But you also aren’t entirely willing to bare yourself without reciprocated trust.
So one day you offer him a deal as you’re about to head home.
You want to be closer - yet you know you’ve both got your reasons for what you hide. So… if he’s willing to share some of his past and what affects him so strongly, you’re willing to do the same.
His eyesockets go wide, and you give him a tired grin, expecting that bit of mild disbelief. Still, you give him a peck on the cheek, and tell him that you’ll see him tomorrow either way - no hard feelings.
He texts you a little after midnight, asking if you’re free to talk.
He appears at your door and knocks the moment you send off your positive response. You go through your traditional knock-knock routine, breaking just a bit of the anxious tension that flared in you all over again - and if you were reading him right, eased him a little too.
You took his hand when he ended up standing in your entryway, vaguely at a loss for how to continue. With ease you led him to your room, and sat yourself cross-legged on the mattress - a quirk of your brow and your lips drew a huff of a laugh out of him. He joined you then, his back meeting the wall as he settled in and tucked his hands back into his hoodie pocket.
You tilted your head slightly as you considered him, curious about what was running through his head…
Your mind made up, you lifted your hand to your cloak’s clasp. You hesitated for just a moment, softly warning him that what you’re about to show him is… unexpected, at best, but to not freak out or anything. He nods, just the once, an uncharacteristically serious set to his tired face.
You undo the clasp, and unfold your wings.
Well, truthfully, you only partially unfold them - while your room was tactically set up to allow you to walk around like this, the sheer span of your wings was certainly enough to be intimidating, and that was the last thing you wanted.
You waited, expecting an ongoing silence for at least a little bit as he reeled, or prepared to drill you for hiding something like this-
What you didn’t expect was his near-immediate “holy shit.”
Your own eyes widened nearly as much as his sockets. Within a moment, you were laughing so hard you were bent double.
Of all reactions, this may have been the best you never could have seen coming.
It took you another minute, particularly because Stretch had ended up blushing and laughing on his own at his slip - but you got your laughter under control and were able to give him a short explanation of what… what it was all about.
He listened intently, the faintest trace of a blush still on his face. At last, he asked a few questions - just a few, ones that you felt like he had been weighing the entire time you talked, but there was a promise of deeper exploration to come.
Afterwards, he opened his arms to you - no demand, just an offer, should you choose to accept it - and you do. Grateful and relieved and fighting a slight giddiness from the wave of emotions, you returned his embrace easily, the pair of you ending up mostly laying down as you laid half over him with your wings comfortably folded. Tentatively, one of his hands stroked your wing - eliciting a pleased sound from you, and a relieved one from him.
Another few minutes passed... but slowly, slowly, he began telling you of the source of his nightmares.
SF Sans:
You… weren’t actually officially Spike’s s/o yet when he found out.
You had known him for months by the night he invited you back into the workshop he kept at home. Against so very many odds, you had become incredibly close to one another - the fact that he was at last inviting you back here, somewhere you knew only a few other living souls had ever been allowed, said as much.
He walked you around the room with absolute ease, explaining a few of the different tools, machines, blueprints, even some of the strange books marked with ancient languages and even a few runes you recognized-
When he picked one up and flipped to an open page as he spoke about an ancient language that worked through words of power and intent, and one in particular that acted as a powerful sealing and illusionary spell, you froze. He showed you the page as he stepped to your side, his arm brushing against yours.
The rune on the dark, aged parchment perfectly matched the engraved pattern on your clasp.
He said nothing more, simply meeting your gaze with an unreadable expression as your focus slid to him.
Several moments passed, the eye of the storm meeting the slow balancing of the scales.
Finally, your breath returned to you, and you sighed, a small, rueful smile playing at your lips as you shook your head. Your gaze went to the cracked door, and back to him - with a simple wave of his hand and the spark of purple magic the door shut and locked. You nodded, then turned and faced him fully, taking just a step back.
Your hand hovered at your clasp for a moment as you considered him - he simply stood there observing you, and despite his measured expression, you knew him well enough to be able to catch that eager, curious spark to his eyelights - a puzzle nearly solved, a number of suspicions nearly tied together, and most importantly… a wary but present trust, even as he looked ready to snap a release on his own magic should the need arise.
With practiced ease, you undid your clasp.
You’d be lying if you said the shock that froze his confidently easy posture didn’t provide you some slight pleasure.
In just a few sentences as he stood frozen - this clearly not quite what he had been picturing - you explained your circumstances, your need for secrecy… and you left unsaid, but so very clearly presented, the measure of staggering trust you had just laid in him.
His gaze returned properly to your own at last. He then closed the small distance between you both, the tension only growing more thick -
His arm scooped around your waist and his other hand tipped your head back slightly as he pulled you close and kissed you for the first time.
To say that you responded well would be… an understatement.
Eventually, you ended up spending hours in there, talking more in depth about all manner of details on both your sides - the depths of his research was staggering, providing all new facets of consideration for a background you had never truly been able to explore for your own safety.
All the while, his hand held yours, your fingers intertwined.
SF Papyrus:
He had just taken an actual bullet for you.
Anti-monster resentment and outright violence was on the rise, and one human faction in particular was growing in its boldness as it took to hunting down not only monsters but the humans that associated with them. Russ had tried to push you away for a short while, plainly stating that it was for your own good, but you had validly argued back that you were friends with other monsters anyways, and had no intention on changing your behavior just because of the danger of a particularly violent group of assholes. He had taken to escorting you whenever you wanted to go out, if you were willing to have him - and if not, you had a feeling he was doing so anyways.
Tonight you were returning home from Muffet’s, a little too drunkenly on both your parts to safely teleport, and - well, what mattered is that now you held Russ in your arms, a strange fluid that matched the golden color of his magic oozing through his shirt from his ribs. The humans had been readily chased away by the blinding beam of concentrated magic he had shot from whatever the hell that dragon-like skull had been.
But stars, Russ was looking worse and worse. He told you to go, that the humans would be back soon, and he could hide himself away for now. You swore at him and told him to shut it, frustrated affection marring the effect.
It was only a few more seconds of delay before you made up your mind. You certainly couldn’t haul him anywhere fast enough walking - but…
Your hand grasped the clasp of your cloak. Consequences be damned, you would at least get him somewhere someone could do first aid. You met his gaze then, and told him to trust you - that you’d get him to safety.
With your clasp undone, you unfurled your wings.
Russ swore long and low under his breath, and whispered something about the ‘real angel’. You were blushing a bit, but chalked up his rambling to the effects of pain.
After a bit of struggling and a hushed apology for jostling him, he was on your back, and you were holding him as tightly as you could. With a few beats of your wings you were in the air, shooting high into the sky with a handful of updrafts, banking on safety in the obscurity of distance as you swerved to angle towards your destination.
Despite the circumstances, you couldn’t help but smile and flush a little deeper yet as Russ managed to whisper a few scattered words of adoration while you soared through the night sky.

Frisk on the Road to Damascus: A Pseudo-Essay on Converting to Undertale
Tumblr media
So 664 days after it was released, and 382 days after I purchased it, I finally, finally, finally beat Undertale.
And... I loved it. Controversial opinion: it’s really good.
But it took me a while to love it. Let me explain, because I’m sure y’all are super interested in me doing so.
I had about five false starts playing Undertale, and all five of those false starts was how fucking irritating I found the sound of Flowey and Toriel’s dialogue. I have a hypersensitivity to sound, especially frequencies, and the sound of Flowey and Toriel’s dialogue is... not pleasant, especially at first aural blush. I got used to it when it when I finally powered through it, but if there were any major changes I would make to Undertale it would be better sound controls - being able to cut the audio down on the dialogue by even 25% would make a big difference to it on an accessibility ability level* ** It was Undertale that first ‘inspired’ me to get Tumblr Saviour - first because I didn’t want to be spoiled by a game I heard was good and wanted to play relatively unspoiled, and later because  I didn’t want to be reminded of the game I was having so much trouble with.
What was it that made me pick up Undertale long enough to get through it? As usual, it was podcasts (there’s a small paper to be written on how podcasts got me interested in pro wrestling, but that’s a whole other story.) The superlatively good Let Me Tell You About Homestuck podcast relaunched a little over a year back (shoutout to excellent co-hosts @yuri-librarian and @betgirl ), and when I found out I dived back in, and in the process rediscovered my love of Homestuck. Homestuck and I had a falling out during the gigapause and Homosuck - at the time it felt like the webcomic’s author was pissed at his own comic and actively self-sabotaging it, and even though I caught up with the comic before the ending I was still disgruntled with it and not willing to engage with it much.
But listening to LMTYAH re-ignited fandom joy within me - a euphoric Road-To-Damascus re-conversion I can only describe as ‘George Bailey coming back to existence at the end of It’s A Wonderful Life.' I gleefully snatched-up the pesterlogs and clutched them to my chest. I waved cheerfully at [S] Descend and [S] Cascade. “Merry Christmas you old mspaintadventures!” I shouted at the top of my lungs as I pelted through the snow to hug my beloved Beta Kid family again.***
You can’t discuss Homestuck anymore without discussing Undertale, which was so clearly fed by Homestuck, which was in turn fed by Undertale, because media is an incestuous slurry. Part of the issues with coming back to the Homestuck dialectic table is that you can’t ignore that big ol’ bowl of Undertale sitting between the roasted trans-media experiments and the mashed potatoes. If, every time that bowl gets passed around, you put your hands over your ears and and scram ‘LA LA LA LA LA I DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT’ then the other guests are going to look at you funny and your nearest neighbour is going to conclude that they’d rather sit through that pompous lecture by the vegan on the other side of them after all.
It’s not a great dining experience, is what I am trying to explain with this increasingly overcooked analogy. I wanted to eat with the rest of the guests - I wanted to watch @revolutionaryduelist’s video on Undertale themes and Homesick themes. I want to suck it up, be an adult, and eat like a goddamn grown-up.
So I grit my teeth, grabbed the bowl, and started shovelling large spoonfuls down my throat. I think this is how grown-ups eat right?
I didn’t like the taste at first. What brought me to Undertax more than anything was the idea of the pacifist run. The games that have this as a legit option are few and far between, and some of them (e.g. Dishonoured) get downright nasty about it. Undertake wasn’t nasty about being helpful, but it didn’t make it easy, either.
Some of you may  feel the need to note that ‘the pacifist route isn’t supposed to be easy,’ to which my response would be ‘shove it up your bum you git-gud wankeroos.’ There are two types of ‘hard’ in video games - one of challenge, and one of ability. The excellent puzzle game The Witness doesn’t greatly challenge ability (for sighted people, at least) - by and large almost all of its puzzles just involve drawing a line. The Witness is hard because the puzzle are so tortuously, mind-bindingly challenging. By contrast, a platform like VVVVVV doesn’t preset much mental challenge - it barely has anything like a puzzle that I can remember, but in terms of ability it requires lightening-fast reflexes and great timing (Somehow I beat that game -I still don’t know how).
Undertale is not a hard-challenge game, it is a hard-ability game, and I flat-out suck at its bullet hell mechanics. All my frustrations with the game were met at the bullet board - if I could make one other major change to the game it would be slightly improving the speed of the heart cursor. Time and time again I violently cursed because I had just missed getting out of the way of something with a cursor I found sluggish and unresponsive, as though my keyboard was laggy. A poor skill level coupled with what felt like hardware problems made for an increasingly difficult experience, one in which I felt like the game was almost taunting me: “oh, you want to be a good person, huh? Too bad - you lack the skills to be a good person. You’re not going to get through this without resorting to killing, you intrinsically violent, terrible person."
Staying alive through the confrontation with Undyne drained me, and by the time I was on my second iteration of Mettaton being a shitheel I just felt burned-out. The story still felt pretty flat, and wasn’t really drawing me in. The hardest decision I had had to make was at the very beginning of the game - Toriel’s home, and Toriel herself, were so lovely and sweet that I still resented the game for making me have to break her heart. I didn’t want to leave her house, I just wanted to stay and live a nice life with her in the Underground. But no - the game wanted me to have  heroic destiny and shit so fine, guess i’ll go back to the surface I don’t have much interest in seeing. Since leaving Toriel’s house all I had wanted to do was return to that tranquility and warmth, and instead I just got more monsters trying to kill me. The stuff with Papyrus had been very funny, but the game still wasn’t sinking its claws into me - it was a quirky but light RPG, funny, but not funny or deep enough for me to understand why a big bowl of it was sitting at the Homestuck dialectic table other that Toby Fox had worked on both things - which seemed like a weak reason to include it. (Remember the Homestuck dialectic table? That didn’t stop being a thing or anything)
So I walked away again and did other things over several weeks, possibly months. I finally came to terms with the fact that my vision is permanently damaged and got myself a Kindle so I could read again. I read a book on the Apollo programme and took another crack at Bleak House. I watched an episode or two of Lucha Underground, got caught up on The Adventure Zone, and went through every post ever posted on @revolutionaryduelist’s Tumblr. I fantasized about buying a new computer. I told myself to watch the Little Witch Academia TV series and forgot every single time - and so on.
And then I watched Car Boys.
Car Boys is one hell of a ride, no pun intended, a strange mishmash of video game fault testing and emergent meta narrative that ends up surprisingly emotional and affecting - and as the credits rolled I made the always unwise decision to wander down into the Youtube comments, where I discovered the fun ‘Car Boys is just like Homestuck’ argument which, natch, led me back to thinking about Homesick and Video Games - and, ultimately, Undertale.
“Fine,” I told myself, “I guess I’ll beat it, at least to finally have one thing in my over-glutted Steam Library I have actually seen-through to completion.”
So last night I booted up my Steam, made the conscious decision to stop trying to get my just-bought 360 controller to work with Sonic Adventures DX via wine (it keeps crashing), and booted up Undertale.
For a while it was just fine again. I don’t like Alphys, even after beating the game: she reminds me of a lot of shitty people I’ve known in my life, and the story uses her lack of self-confidence as sort of a moé defence - ah, look at how cute she is, isn’t that adorable, she feels bad about what she’s done - without ever actually examining that behaviour in any critical detail. Alphys being an adorkable anime fan and her relationship with Undyne are all great character traits - but it doesn’t make her a good person, and the game never truly calls her to the mat in much the same way that it sort of glosses over Asgore having condoned the murder of six other humans (but he comes into the story so late I find him less of a character and more of a symbol.) Alphys gets a whole ‘trip to the dump/romance role-play’ subplot after being revealed to have deliberately ordered a bunch of monsters to at least make a pretence of killing you in order to make herself look like a hero - and that's before you get to go into her basement and learn the really shitty shit she did with dying monsters' souls. I mean Jesus Christ Alphys how come nobody calls you on this!
But I’m getting ahead of myself. I helped Mettaton’s ratings, left him to be patched upped by Alphys, and made my way to the castle walls - and the writing started to get really good. I loved meeting with Sans and his talk about the true nature of EXP and LOVE, loved walking into the throne room for the first time, loved the moment when I realized Toriel was the Queen-in-Exile - coming upon the New House was genuinely moving… but then I reached Ashore, and it wouldn’t let me TALK to him, and I didn’t like having to fight him after a full pacifist run, and also he was really hard.
So I swallowed my pride a little and googled vague hints for ways to make the fight easier. I learned that yeah, I absolutely had to fight him, and then I went and ground Cloud Glasses back and forth to the Temmie Store to unlock the Temmie Armor and earn the cash to stock-up on my beloved Bisicles. So equipped, I went and fought Asgore for the final time, thus beating this game that everyone raved about for reasons I could not understand.
Then the game ended and suddenly started to get really, really, really good. Much like Homestuck in Act 6, Undertale’s starts pushing the boundaries of games themselves, using save files against you and deliberately crashing the game. Omega Flowey is a goddamn nightmare, a visual headache who rails against you and the concept of friendship, and while he was a frustrating fight for the first time I felt like this was less a reflection of my shitty skills and more a deliberate choice of the part of the game to show what monstrous power he wielded.
As I was sent back into the world, I was eager to go find Undyne. I had to look-up where she lived because I had totally forgotten that her house existed - in fact, I had forgotten Papyrus had ever said anything about meeting up at Undyne’s house, so I never befriended her in my original run. The moment Undertale moved from a game I was starting to enjoy to one I knew I loved was the moment Papyrus leapt out Undyne’s window - late in the process to fall in love with a game? Perhaps, but so it was.
Missing Undone the first time through felt so narratively satisfying to me that it wasn’t until writing this that it occurred to me that it was something that didn’t have to have been missed - the run-in with Undone hardly ends on a high-note: after a miserable shield-fight and a whole lot of fleeing you give her a cup of water and she slinks-off into the night. It wasn’t something that exactly screamed ‘She’s Ready For A Friendship Lesson.’ I kept expecting her to show back up somewhere in New Home Castle for Round 2: Redemption Boogaloo, but it never happened. Then Sans got Anubis on my ass, the King of All Monsters got murdered by a flower and my game crashed on purpose - sort of forgot about her no-show appearance.
So there we were: breaking windows, sipping tea, making the worst goddamn spaghetti it’s ever been my misfortune to make**** and having a wonderful time. Other than my general misgivings about Alphys being let-off way too lightly by the narrative*****, after that first reset Undertale was practically a perfect game for me. The ending made me feel mushy and sappy, the epilogue where you get to pace around and talk to just about everyone felt so unbelievably RIGHT - if you want to head out and make one last personal connection with everyone you’ve ever met, you can pretty-much do that. Ben Croshaw wrote quite elegantly that Undertale represents “the triumph of kindness, reminding people of who they were before tragedy twisted them.”****** That kindness is what makes the game so compelling - what makes reading-up on the Genocide route feel so legitimately horrific and transgressive. It’s going to stick in the back of my mind every time I am needlessly rude to someone, overly sarcastic, or just my usual ‘less kind than I wish I was’ self. Homestuck wallets just went on sale today and I immediately bought one and then felt bad for all the Tumblr posts I saw for worthy causes - I SHOULD GIVE UP ALL MY WORLDLY POSSESSIONS TO THE POOR AND GO PREACH THE GOSPEL OF ACTING WITH MERCY as Undertale teaches.
It’s the kindness that will stick with me - and dear God, reading about the Genocide routes makes me nauseated. I’m the guy who claims that this time his Mass Effect play through will be Renegade and then goes 100% paragon again except for being rude to Anderson (because screw that dill weed - oh, geeze, I have failed Undertale again.)
Anyways, long, convoluted, not-very-coherent opinion: Undertale is a good game. Sorry it took me so long to learn that.
*but if we’re going to talk about accessibility in video games we’ll be here all year: an especially big fuck you to all those games who don’t let you change the font size for all of us with really poor eyesight (which is to say essentially all games).
** And what is it with games being embarrassed to have their text dialogue scroll past without some kind of irritating sounds? Undertale at least uses the noise as a form of expanding character identity, but the world is littered with sprite JRPGs who think dialogue is best accompanied by a garbled, repeating beep.
*** Re-experiencing the comic multiple times gave me so many more insights I never used to have. Revisiting Act Six and Homosuck, especially through @betgirl‘s eyes, I found so much to love. Which there is some serious problems in it (The Dancestors and Abuser Gamzee), there’s so much more joy, depth, and thought then I remember. I don’t know if, at the time, with the broken pacing, it was possible to see the shape of the narrative arc that Andrew Hussie was trying to tell - the deconstruction of the nature of storytelling, video games, and the ‘Problem of Mario.’ It’s really good, you guys, and you do yourself a disservice if you have never read it.
**** Undyne is right, by the way: homemade pasta is unquestionably the best and super easy; its only major flaw is that it’s just time-consuming, especially if you’ve got to hand-crank an antique pasta machine to roll it out. KitchenAid sells a pasta roller attachment for their mixer for an amount that justifies a class uprising all on its own.
***** I’m not some weirdo going ALPHYS MUST BE PUNISHED but Alphys should really, you know, actually apologize for the shit she pulled. Yeah, she says ‘I got scared of my amagalgamtions and cowardly didn’t tell their families about it,’ but not being honest about it is the most insignificant issue here. Much more pressing and things like Experimenting On A Human Soul, Actually Making the Amalgams In The First Place, Setting Up A Bunch Of Death Traps So She Could Insert Herself Into Your Life As A Hero. I can forgive Alphys - I think she is a genuinely good person who made misguided and out-right foolish mistakes and should never have had the job she had (I hear Toriel fires her in one ending which fuck yeah Toriel, only one with sense.) Undertake doesn’t need to re-write a damn thing about Alphys - I would just like one more scene in which Alphys admits culpability for the original problem rather than just an aspect of the fallout.
****** And it should be stressed: Alphys deserves kindness (and a good therapist). I don’t want a kangaroo court or anything like that - my issue is with the narrative, not Alphys personally.
Asgore, though… dude kinda murdered six children? Do people talk about that, because they ought to.
