I may get into the ask box or I may disappear for another 4 years.
but for now
The Seven Deadly Dungeons and Dragons
I don’t play DND but my girlfriend does and she’s sitting next to me so let’s go
-In this AU they’re all normal humans who just get together and play DND sometimes.
-Merlin is the DM.
-Merlin sits for hours writing all sorts of lore and intricate backstories only for them to commit their classic chaotic shenanigans and screw with all her plans. Luckily, she’s good at thinking on the fly.
-Meliodas plays as a halfling paladin from a noble background. His character’s goal is to get information and find his brother.
-Diane plays as a half elf barbarian (my gf thinks this is contradictory but in a fun way) (“she’s too pretty to be a half orc 🥺”)
-Her goal is to find her sisters murderer and bring them to justice.
-Ban would play a tiefling rogue. His goal is to revive his dead lover (Elaine is alive but she thinks DND is ‘nerd shit’ so she just stays at their home. sometimes she’ll come and watch them though)
-King would play a gnome cleric. He is from the fae realm however it recently got raided and he is seeking revenge from the perpetrators.
-Gowther would play as an automaton wizard. His goal is to find out what happened to his creator and gain a heart.
-Escanor would play as a half orc barbarian (when he rages it’s like his daytime form when he’s normal it’s his nightform)
-His goal is simply to find friends who don’t think he’s strange and he simply goes along with the gang because he feels accepted.
-Elizabeth would play as a aasimar cleric. Her character writes stories and is going on the adventure simply to find inspiration.
-They all gather together and play in Escanor’s basement. He makes a little food spread. They don’t appreciate him enough honestly.
-Escanor and King are chronic note takers. They have notebooks full of the lore.
-Diane also writes notes but she writes them aesthetically like
Liones is the country we live in
and highlights it in pastel. She never writes down useful information and spells everything wrong. King usually helps her with his notes.
-Ban forgets everything lore wise and all of his abilities. He never knows when he can use sneak attack and keeps getting in trouble for trying to pick pocket his party.
-“I just think it’d be funny if he wasn’t actually a good rogue because he’s so big”
-Gowther would keep getting the party in trouble by using dunamancy on random NPCs. Merlin is sick of his shit and having to rewrite the plot of her campaigns.
-Meliodas always has weirdly good roles. They have investigated whether his dice are rigged and they’re not he’s just crazy lucky.
-Elizabeth would put a lot of thought into her characters backstory and motives. She would have a very thought out lore.
-Hawk is Escanor’s cat that they all loved so much that they put him in the game as a pig that can eat ranged attacks if a 20 is rolled and also is immune to poison
-Gowther tries to romance every npc. He rolls nat 20 for every persuasion check and Merlin has to let him have the most rizz in game.
-The party all met in the Boar Hat and decided to help each other reach their goals.
-In this canon the Boar Hat can also move. Meliodas has a spell that can create the Boar Hat to be constructed infront of him.
-They all met in real life because Merlin works with Escanor and they got talking about it and she was like “Hold up let me bring my friend Gowther” and then Gowther invited Meliodas who then invited his girlfriend Elizabeth and best friend Ban and then Ban was like “Hold up we need this dude too” and invited King and King’s girlfriend was like “Omg i wanna join” yeah
-King would paint a lot of miniatures
-Elizabeth would be a dice fiend. She would have so many dice and a cute bag for them.
-Meliodas and Ban both use the same pair of black dice that have chipped paint. They just pull these crusty dice from their pockets. The numbers are barely legible anymore.
-Merlin makes her own dice out of resin and sells them on etsy.

If I may for the fic asks; 🏅 💭 🍰
Curious about any of these, whichever one takes your fancy! ^_^
-C
What is something you recently felt proud of in regard to your writing (finished a fic, actually planned for once, etc). Oh hmmmm!
I GOT AN ASK TELLING ME I WAS SOMEONES FAVORITE MERLIN FIC WRITER!???? AND YOU talked to me about loving my fics so much!????? I'm also kinda proud because I think I might be nailing the side characters in my lastest longfic. I think I have their personalities and diouluge down pretty well even if they are not POV characters. And since the longfic is gonna include lots of cannon side characters due to the nature of it's story that's gotta be a good thing! What is a headcanon you have about your own work? Gwen's Mom died to disease around the time Morgana's father did. It was one reason they bonded. Not sure if it's really a headcannon because it is actually mentioned. Modern Arthur once he returns is a chocloholic. Again not sure if that counts as headcannon. Most of my headcannons are mentioned because they tend to come as I am writing. One that is not exactly explicitly mentioned in depth is that Gwen being with Morgana helps her not go down the dark path or to turn from it some some of my cannon AU worlds. Morgana doesn't feel so alone and feels like she has someone who is hers. (besides a possible sister)
Name one of your fave comfort fics (doesn’t have to be your all time fave). The ones that come to mind are not actually mine. Do I need to pick one of mine? Ok first thing to know is I'm weird. Whump comforts me. I dunno why but it does. (perhaps because some of the things that happened in the past, perhaps how my brain works IDEK) So some of my comfort fics are actually hurt/confort/whump. here is one If we are NOT talking whump I am a huge fan of these two They are the first Merlin fics I read and the ones that made me notice merthur worked perfectly and ship it. (Then I went back and watched the show like "OMG HOW WAS I BLIND TO THIS!") If I have to pick one of mine I would say that any of my fics that are hurt/comfort/whump with plot (instead of Plot with Hurt/Confort/Whump) So any of my fics that are under 40K Tend to be a comfort to write? I get less anxiety with them. I would not give up the plot focused longfic ones for the world though.
THESE WERE FROM THIS ASK GAME!

Fic Writing 20 Questions
Thanks for the tags @khorazir and @raina-at
How many works do you have on AO3?
13
2. What’s your total AO3 wordcount?
268,623
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Sherlock (BBC). I may try my hand at a Merlin fic in the next year, but we’ll see ...
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Beautiful Pictures
A Week in November
Lines in the Sand
The Man with the Cartier Frames
That Time of Year
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes! I love getting comments, so it’s the least I can do (even if it takes a few days). I love when authors respond to my comments, so it’s only fair.
6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Like many of the people answering these questions, I don’t write angsty endings. I considered it for Jam (I almost didn’t include the epilogue) but I love a happy ending.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
All my fics have happy endings. If I had to pick one as “happiest”, I’d say The Man With the Cartier Frames.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I have not, luckily. I’ve had a weird comment or two where I’ve thought “why did you tell me that”, but nothing super negative.
9. Do you write smut?
Not really? I’ve written some mature scenes that allude to things, but don’t go into detail.
10. Do you write crossovers?
No. I have particular objections, but I doubt I ever will.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes, Lines in the Sand has been translated into French and That Time of Year into Russian.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I haven’t. I don’t object to the concept, but I’m not sure I’d be a great collaborator given my current writing style. I think I’m better at betaing which gives me a way to work with other fic writers.
14. What’s your all time favourite ship?
This is really tough. I feel like it’s okay if your “all time” favourite ship changes every five or ten years. I mean, I am a very different person at 40 than I was at 25. My favourite to write is definitely Johnlock—they have a great dynamic and are both really interesting characters in their own rights. So, they are definitely up there. The other ship that comes to mind in terms of those that have really stood the test of time for me is Goren/Eames from Law & Order:CI (a very small fandom). Goren has a lot of Sherlockian traits and Eames is just incredibly cool (and both actors are gorgeous, which doesn’t hurt!).  I discovered Merlin in the last year or two and really like Merthur (honestly, I also really like Mergwenthur which I never thought would be my thing, but Gwen is so lovely), but it’s too early to tell if that will last long enough to be on my all time list!
15. What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Corsi, my NHL Johnlock AU. I have a couple chapters written, but I started it a long time ago and my writing style has changed a fair bit since then. I think I’d want to go back and rewrite the first chapter, but that seems like a waste … so, instead, I will just leave it to languish.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think I write Parentlock really well. I have young kids, so it’s relatively easy for me to make kids read age appropriate (which they often don’t in stories, be they fic or published). I hope I am also able to convey that delicate balance that parents feel—namely adoring their kids with every once of your being while wanting to throttle them.  Basically, I think I can write believable kids and believable parents.
I also think I am okay at creating cases, mainly because I become a bit obsessed with making the pieces fit.  I like internal consistency!
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I can’t plot out a fic well enough that I can post anything before it’s done. Which means, that I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to write a truly long fic (say longer than 50K words).  To have the motivation to write something that long, I think I would need the dopamine hit from posting and getting feedback. But, I just can’t see me ever posting a fic before it’s completely written, because of how often I go back and revise as I write. Particularly for fics with any sort of case—I’ll have the loose parameters of the case set out, but the details won’t emerge until I write. Which may mean I have to go back and edit earlier content to make those details work (internal consistency!). Even things like John’s work schedule or the timing of a phone call or what time Rosie gets out of school may change a half dozen times as I write to make the other pieces work.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?
I think it’s fine, but it’s best if you have a half-decent knowledge of that language. The only language I would use is French, should that ever come up.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
X-Files (this also seems to be a common theme)
20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?
Ugh. This is an impossible question. I really like Beneath the Surface—I love epistolary fics and I think I did pretty well with text exchanges in that one. I am also pretty proud of Jam. So, I suppose those would be my faves.
Hmmmm, I think I am late to the game here so anyone interested in doing this, consider yourself tagged!

The Things We Thought We Knew (But We Really Didn’t)
Wrote this on a lark after reading some stories that floated the au idea that (for one reason or another) Blinky and Jim were related. Either from him being James Lake Sr but not knowing it, or from Merlin's magic randomly choosing one of Jim's mentors be the "base" for Jim's half-troll form and Blinky was the one picked.
I know that, for one of those fics, the author had some interesting evidence they put forward on their tumblr for how Jim and Blinky resembled each other from the start and how it was just MORE OBVIOUS when the two were the same species.
I thought it was fun and decided to throw my own hat in the ring, but with my own twist.
.
In 1995, around the start of spring, Blinkous Galadrigal went missing.
He had gone to the surface to help the current trollhunter, Kanjigar the Courageous, by collecting some more research material that had been dropped by traveling trolls that came to visit Trollmarket. He didn’t return before dawn or in the following days. The only hope that the worst hadn’t come to pass, was that his remains had not been found.
Something that Arrrgh, his closest friend, would point out each time he left to search for him again. He refused to give up hope.
.
The same morning that the scholarly troll vanished, a man was found unconscious in a back alley wearing nothing but a set of ill-fitting, brown overalls and rushed to the Arcadia Oaks Hospital.
He’s unconscious for several weeks and the doctors can’t find any records for him. They dub their patient “James Doe”, and wait patiently for him to come around and hopefully give them insight into who he is and where he came from.
When James finally awakens, he can’t answer them. He can’t remember where he came from, how he ended up in the alley, or even what his name is.
He’s a man that doesn’t exist and, while the staff can theorize for hours based on speech patterns and accent (a middle-american scholar that may have spent some time in England? Apparently the way one speaks can tell a lot about where they came from), they still have no answers.
All he can do is climb to his feet and move forward.
.
After James is cleared to leave the hospital (and stumbles on the surname “Lake” to use for his paperwork), he gets new clothing in his size and temporary residency in the Arcadia Homeless Shelter.
He also makes a friendly acquaintance with a kind volunteer by the name of Barbara O’Neil, who helped him find those options in the first place and gave him someone to chat with numerous times during his hospital stay.
.
Several Months later, and a stronger friendship forged between the two, Barbara learns that a friend-of-a-friend was looking for an assistant for his job and hasn’t had much luck finding one. So she passes along the suggestion to James.
Norman Polk is a friendly, relaxed man despite his intimidating height and many scars. Most shockingly, he can wield magic as easily as he breathes and seems fairly sure James has some too.
Mr. Polk is a detective, who works to help the everyday person with his gifts as much as he can but has trouble keeping track of the many papers, books, and research that come with the work. And, for James, he’s willing to give him a chance even with his mysterious background.
The work comes easily to James, hunting for the truth and searching for answers is familiar in a way he can’t explain. Handling the paperwork and research is laughably easy.
He gets the job.
(When his new boss learns that he’s been living in a homeless shelter, he insists that James move into the spare room in Norman’s office/house.)
.
Two years pass, and James transitions from being Norman’s assistant to his business partner. The sharp-eyed researcher to Norman’s people-wise instincts. They work well together and have a reputation that can’t be sneezed at. It’s something both of them view with pride.
He’s also realized that he’s fallen for his friend Barbara. Hard.
With the encouragement of their mutual friends, they try dating. It works out better than either of them had expected.
.
James proposes at the end of 1998, their wedding the following summer of 1999.
.
In the Spring of 2000, they learn that Barbara’s pregnant and James Lake Jr. is born on October 10th.
The new parents are delighted with their baby boy, despite the anxiety and sleep deprivation throughout. He’s nicknamed “Jim” and he’s a healthy, active little boy with loving parents who work hard to care for him.
Life is good for the small family.
.
Until Jim’s 5th birthday, when James and Norman are called away for an emergency case. James Lake Sr. never comes home.
That night, the missing Blinkous Galadrigal is miraculously found by Kanjigar wandering the sewers of Arcadia in a daze, clutching a bag of assorted magical items in one hand and a minuscule bit of broken metal in another.
He has no memories of where he’d been for the past 10 years, what he’d been doing, or why he’d vanished.
Once he’s confirmed to be the real thing, he’s brought back to Trollmarket, where those lost 10 years remain a mystery. The strange possessions are tucked away in the back of his library, and teased at the back of his mind from that day forward.
.
On the surface, the disappearance of James Lake Sr becomes an unsolved mystery and a rampant story in the Arcadia rumor mill.
The rumor sting, weighing heavily on the remaining members of the family. Especially as those rumors spiral beyond control, becoming progressively more vicious as time goes on.
Norman tries to keep the hope alive, showing Barbara magic that shows that her lost husband is still alive even if they don’t know where he is. He keeps searching for clues, hints, anything to lead him to his missing friend. He reiterates, over and over, that James wouldn’t just abandon them. He loved Barbara and Jim far too much to do that to them.
.
Three years later, his search is cut tragically short because of an accident with a drunk driver that took his life. The accident hurts  so much,  and Barbara’s hope fades with each following year.
But her friend, Allison (and her husband, Thomas), pitch in where they can to help with the burden. And her neighbor, Nancy, gives her a place to go when her home is too much. With their help, she doesn’t fall apart, even when the rumors and snide remarks become too much.
.
When Jim turns 12, eight years after James went missing, she decides she can’t keep waiting.
She files for James Lake Sr to be declared legally dead.
(The rumors abruptly die at that. Something small and spiteful in her chest is pleased with that.)
She can feel her heart breaking throughout the process and she finally lets herself grieve at the end. The most she can gather herself together to say to Jim is that she’s not married to James anymore.
Now she’s a widow raising her son on her own, and the only route left is forward.
.
The year of Jim’s 15th birthday, Jim is chosen by the Amulet of Daylight to become the first-ever human Trollhunter and his life is turned upside down.
The following three years of his life are chaotic. Filled with magic and monsters, joy and fear, history making triumphs and soul crushing losses. There is so much happening he can barely handle it.
It’s surprising how comfortable he is with his new mentor, Blinkous “Blinky” Galadrigal. Something about the troll just- clicks with him and he can never seem to put it into words. Blinky puts those feelings into words for him, the day the troll calls him his son.
(A small, buried part of him wonders if this was what he could have had if his own father had stayed.)
.
Barbara finally opens her heart again and tries to build something new. Even as her mind whispers how similar Blinky sounds to James, how much his human form resembled her missing husband, how much he and Jim resemble each other no matter the form either of them were in.
There’s no way to test if a human and a troll were related, and she doesn’t think her heart could take being wrong if she let herself hope again. No matter how badly she wishes she could finally have an  answer.
(James had built his life from amnesia that had been potentially caused by magic. Norman had warned them when they started dating that, if that magic broke or was reversed, he could lose his memories again. Blinky was a troll, but a troll could be turned human… No, she couldn’t let herself be wrapped up in theories.)
.
But, eventually, the losses became too great.
Loss of friends, loss of family, loss of home. One Pyrrhic victory after another that weighed them down.
When the true purpose of the Krohnisfere offers Jim the chance to go back and save the precious people they’ve lost, he takes it.
In the hearts of his surviving friends and family, they all hope it will work too.
.
.
.
.
It’s 1998 and James Lake bolts awake in the middle of the night with a strangled gasp, as if from a terrible nightmare.
Laying in the dark of his room at the house that he shares with Norman, his heart racing a mile-a-minute as his eyes adjust to the darkness, he remembers.

I may be slightly high on fever right now (fuck my life I worked myself into being sick again) but I've just seen Horns.
Yes, Horns, that movie Daniel Radcliffe made back in 2013, I think. And yes, I'm late to the party but Merlin's saggy balls the movie slaps!
Do I have to say spoilers from here on forward? I'm going to say it anyway, your choice from now on.
And it slaps partly because I can't just see Iggy. I don't see Harry either, but I do see Daniel picking a movie which happens to get even with HP on so many things.
First of all, you get Jily on screen. You just do. End of. You also get a sort of Snape. You get the whole "no one believes me" and "the authorities have turned on me and are blaming me for something I didn't do". You have a forest, and no it's not the Black Forest but it's a pretty significant place too.
And then, oh shit, then... Lee, who happens to be obsessed with Merrin (talk about a Snape and Lily parallel) not only actually kills her - and I don't mean in the way Severus got Lily killed in the books and the movies - I mean actual murder. And the fucker tries to kill our boy Iggy, and you know what saves him? Merrin's love, symbolised in the shape of a necklace.
But, hear this out, Lee gets viciously killed by snakes. Snakes Iggy has befriended. My boy Iggy could be a parselmouth, and the movie just leans on that aspect. And when Iggy dies in the end, angel fallen from grace turned into the devil while he was at it, his body is scorched, bloody scorched, but does not disappear into thin air.
Does it feel like Daniel picked that screenplay to spite someone? Sort of, and I love him for it.
Did I just watch the thing as a weird time-travel/fix it AU where Voldemort does not exist yet Harry embraces the whole heir of Slytherin thing and avenges his mother while absolutely wrecking havoc on a small rural town of lumberjacks? Where he befriends all the snakes and uses them to fuck Snape up while in demon shape? Did I mention he has angel wings for a very short while? Did I mention he gets the "unwanted child" treatment in this too?
I don't know. It could be the fever talking, but our boy Daniel made a fine choice when he decided to play Iggy in Horns.

i loved the reality show setting you made up for the reincarnation au!! 🤣 It made cackle.
It may have inspired me a little...
Merlin: *having a drink*
Morgan: I'm with child.
Merlin: *chokes on his drink, then coughs* Pardon?
Morgan: I'm with child.
Merlin: That wasn't supposed to happen. *thinking about what he's seen in his visions*
Morgan: 😡 Well, it did. And it's your fault.
Merlin: My fault? *scowling*
Morgan: Yes, yours, Merlin. Henry's fault as well.
...
Merlin: *staring at Morgan's belly with a frown*
Morgan: What? *hand going to her belly*
Merlin: You keep doing that.
Morgan: Doing what?
Merlin: Putting a hand to your stomach. Why?
Morgan: It's soothing. Also, your child is restless.
Merlin: Ah. *nods*
Morgan: 🙄 *grabs his hand, putting it on her belly* Here, feel this.
Merlin: *feels movement beneath his palm, plus a vision* Morgan?
Morgan: Yes?
Merlin: There's two of them.
...
Morgan: *slaps Henry*
Henry: *groans* What did I do now?
Morgan: I'm not just having one child, I'm having two.
Henry: *blinks* Huh, must be his virility.
Morgan: *glares* Shut up. This is all your fault.
Henry: Umm? Congratulations is in order?
S!Merlin: (eye twitches)
Henry: I brought her some new fruits, you know.
S!Merlin: tell me why i shouldn't end you right here?
Henry: Because you are happy and don't know how to show it in a healthy manner?
S!Merlin: (wind gathers around him like a storm)
Henry: (eyes flash gold, responding) all i'm saying is that i'm happy for both you! (vanishes in a burst of magic, his laughter echoing in s!merlin's quarters)
,,,,,,,,,,,
Anna, who's hanging out in Henry's estate: (senses stong magic) wha..
Henry: (drops into a heap beside her chair after he teleported)
Anna: Merlin? What's going on?
Henry: (manic glee in his eyes, shuffles on his knees to rest his chin on her armrest) Morgana
Anna: ???
Henry: THEY'RE HAVING TWINS
Anna: LMAOOO (drops a kiss on henry's head)
Henry: !!!
Anna: umm (covers her lips while smiling)
Henry: (stands up and picks her up from the chair to swing her around)

Intellectually, I know that I'm really not adding any more fanfic with my Destiel deep dive than I did when I went deep into Smallville, Star Trek, Stucky, or Merlin, particularly when factoring in my demanding standards of what I'm willing to pick up (re: I may be casting my net wide, but I'm still screening out all sorts of AUs). But it's still the fact that I'm doing this all at once, so it FEELS like I'm adding more than those.
I mean, I'm looking at having over 3000 fic added, which means I'm easily pushing to the 25000 point in total when counting everything else, and I intend on still adding more fandoms into this...
Y'know that timeless space I want to enter in to so that I can write ALL THE THINGS? Yeah, it's also for getting to read all these too.
My mother has had this shirt for most of my life that says "God put me on this earth to accomplish a number of things. Right now, I'm so far behind, I will never die." That's what this is beginning to feel like.

You fiddled with your jumper, pulling it down gently to make sure Draco’s shirt wasn’t visable in any way. Once you were happy you picked up your bag checking you had everything, your wand, your dads cloak and in particular the marauders map which you stole from Harry’s dorm earlier
As you were about to zip up your bag when the door to your dorm opened abruptly, hitting the wall as it did, revealing your brother being backed into the room by Ginny whist making out “Evening” you say amused, scaring them half to death
They jump apart, relaxing as they see you although Harry looks a little embarrassed “Hi y/n” Ginny smiles “I thought you’d be away by now sorry” she lets out a giggle
“Hey Gin, no worries I’m just leaving now” you say with a smile beginning to walk by them “I’m not ready to be an aunt yet so be safe” you nudge Harry who lets out some kind of noise looking mortified “Have fun” you sing as you close the door behind you, oh merlin did you love to tease your twin
Making your way down the stairs you wave at Neville as he sits in the corner with Seamus and Dean before heading to the door, but as you are about to exit you hear your brothers voice “Y/n!”
You spin around spotting him jogging up to you “Hey…wow you work fast” you jest wiggling your eyebrows
“Ha ha very funny” he deadpans but you can see the blush creeping on his face “I was wondering if you’ve seen the map or Ron and Hermione” he inquires
Fuck, you think, of course now he notices, it’s only been going missing for near 5 years “Nope” you lie before tilting your head “What does Ron and Mione got to do with it?” you question
“Me and Gin think they’ve started hooking up” he explains
“Finally” you say with a chuckle, relaxing a little knowing he’s not quite figured it out yet
He nods “I know long time coming believe me. Anyway, if you do see them let me know because I think they’re the ones nicking the map every week…I’m not mad just curious” he says genuinely “and...I may also have a bet on it with Gin” you giggle at that
“Sure thing and same, I’ve got one on it with Georgie…” and Dray “Nice chatnbut I’ve really gotta get going” you give him a smile before starting backing out of the common room
“Where you off to by the way?” your brother inquires
Merlin can’t a gal sneak off to see her boyfriend in peace anymore? “Just have some astronomy work I need to do because I fucked it last time…oh I borrowed the cloak so I can sneak easier on the way back” you quickly clarify “Hope that’s alright”
He seems to buy it “Yeah course sis” he gives you a small side hug “You want me to pack up some stuff for you if you’re going to be late?” he offers knowing you all have to get up early for the train back home tomorrow
You’re eyes light up but you also feel a twinge of guilt in your stomach “Yeah that would be great thanks” you reach out giving his arm a little squeeze before heading off
Tumblr media
Sneaking into the Slytherin common room was almost second nature to you now, with Draco slipping you the password and your dads cloak it was a piece of cake. You pushed the door gently open to Draco’s dorm, you hated his father but the private room he got for his son undeniably helped with keeping your relationship a secret.
You and he had been dating since 5th year but had been friends long before that, unlike your brother your introduction to Draco was a lot nicer, even if it only happened to be around 5 minutes apart. You had walked right into him on the train, then asked if you had seen a boy matching your brothers’ description to which told you to away from him because he was a wanker and you replied teasingly ‘That’s kinda hard but I know what you mean, we did share a womb’
After that you didn’t really speak until you were paired together the following year, finding that you both rather enjoyed the others company and hence began sneaking around. As the years went by you slowly develop crushes on one another, the yule ball being the point you both realised it, seeing him with Pansy and you with George killed the two of you, of course neither worked out, both of you realising your dates were actually your best friends not potential lovers. After that night your hugs were just that little bit longer, touches lingering, talks deeper and the tension between the two of you only kept growing, so much it took less than a week into your 5th year before he finally kissed you
You dropped your bag lightly, smiling as you saw Draco’s sleeping figure. Pulling your jumper over your head you draped it over the chair by his desk, quickly slipping off your shoes along with your jeans before you climbed into bed next to him. You smiled as you cuddled into him, hand slithering around his torso and your head nuzzling into the side of his chest
He hummed in his sleep, stirring as you gently left a couple of kisses on his jaw “Evening love” you feel his voice vibrate from his chest, arms coming to wrap around you as he pressed his lips against the top of your head
“Hi Dray” you smile into his chest “You don’t mind the surprise visit, do you?” you check, tugging on your bottom lip
His lips turn up “Never when it comes to you my love” he finally opens his eyes looking down at you with the softest smile he reserved for those he loved most
You lean up kissing his lips tenderly “I’m going to miss you” you pout burying your head into the crook of his neck
“Me too” he replies with a sad smile “It’s only two weeks this time” he strokes your hair, heart aching at the thought of not being able to hold, let alone speak to you for so long
You nod gently into him before placing a kiss “Can I stay here the night?” you mumble into his skin
He nods “Of course baby” he squeezes you gently “Want me to dig out the alarm clock?” you pull back nodding but your face is sad “Love” he cups your face
“What are we going to do when we graduate?” you ask quietly, maybe it was the impending distance that brought this on but it was something you needed to think about
He shakes his head “I don’t know” his thumb strokes your cheek before tracing over your lips lightly “But we’ll figure that out together” he assures you before thinking for a second “I’ll have full access to my Gringotts account on my birthday so even if I’m disowned…” he says the last word quieter “…we’d still have money”
You mouth parts in a happy shock before you smirk a little “You realise I too am rich…not Malfoy rich but enough that I could take care of you” you assure him, bopping his nose
He chuckles “How about I buy us a place to live and you decorate it, you’ve always had the better sense of style” he kisses your forehead
You nod “Fine but it needs to be a cute cottage and pets count as décor, right?” you tilt your head a playful look painting your face
“Anything you want” he says truly, smiling at you in complete admiration “But right now we sleep” he places a lingering kiss to your lips
As he breaks away you pull him in again “I’m not very sleepy” you mumble into his lips
“I see how it is” he replies lifting your hips on top of him “Just here for one last shag eh?” he shakes his head pouting teasingly
“I can leave if you-” he doesn’t even let you finish before he’s sitting up and pulling you in for another kiss
Tumblr media
The next morning was a blur, hurrying back from Draco’s dorm at 5am to try and grab some extra sleep and pack before you had to rush to the station. You used to sit with Harry, Ron and Hermione but after making friends with Neville and Luna you now sat with them, you loved it but as a twin you missed your brother dearly even on a short journey like this.
After saying your farewells to Luna and Neville, you find Harry, seeing him wave at Ron, Hermione and Ginny as they headed off “See you soon” you shout towards them as you approach your brother, earning a ‘byes’ and ‘miss yous’ from them before you turned to give him a hug “Hey” you smile into the embrace but something felt off “You aright?” you pull back looking at him with concern
“Yeah” he confirms but his smile is strange
As you were about to question it you felt someone bump into you “Watch it” they snap and your heart skips as you recognise the voice
“Me watch it? I think you need to get your eyes checked Malfoy” you clap back with a challenging smirk
“Of course out of everyone its the Potters that are blind as bats” he teases with his own smirk, eyes trailing up and down you in particular, you look cute in that lovely, he places the thought into your head, it was times like this you actually loved Snape for teaching him how to do that
“Fuck off Malfoy” Harry says harshly, grabbing your arm and your bags before pulling you away quickly
Did he wake up on the wrong side of the bed? Draco looks at you surprised, sure he and Harry were enemies but your brother was never one to get angry for nothing.
You just shrug discreetly mouthing ‘love you’ seeing him return it before Harry dragged you out of his sight “Harry!” you hit his hand as you get out of the station “What’s wrong?” you weren’t mad at him just worried about him, did something happen on the train you didn’t know about?
He looks around “What’s wrong?” he repeats back to you before pulling out the map “What’s wrong is you lied to me” he looks at you betrayed, hand clutching the paper in what you can’t tell is either anger or disappointment, perhaps a mix of the two?
Your mouth parts, oh Godric he knows, you panic, breathing picking up “Harry…” you start but the confrontation is cut off by your parents
“Harry! Y/n!” your father calls out
You turn your head at them still processing while Harry quickly stuffs the map back into his bag “This isn’t over” he whispers to you quickly before turning to your parents “Hi!”
“Hey” you say with a fake smile, you were happy to see your parents but the thought that Harry knew made you feel sick
Tumblr media
Harry didn’t know you had been stealing the map at first, he just assumed you had been borrowing it to pull pranks or for sneaking off to the kitchens after curfew. However, since you’d returned for 5th year he noticed it going missing more often and now he was dating Ginny this year he finally observed how you also didn’t return to your dorm some nights, the map always coincidentally gone every time. He thought maybe it was like him with Ginny, trying to keep a new relationship quiet until you figured it out but even then, he had told about his feeling for Ginny because he needed advice pursuing them, so it hurt that you didn’t do the same
He did try to figure out who the person was, he ruled out someone in Gryffindor pretty quickly, for a while he thought maybe it was Luna and you were nervous because it was a girl, but then he came across her hanging out with Ginny on one of the nights you were gone and that theory was thrown out the window. Eventually he decided to nick the map back, swiping it from your bag last night before you left, watching as you headed down to the dungeons. He then began to understand why you were so secretive and didn’t tell him, you were dating a Slytherin, but the bit that made his blood boil was the ones whose dorm you entered
The thought of the boy who was his literal nemesis and his sister together made sick to his stomach, he felt so betrayed and wanted in that moment to march down there, confront you both but more importantly beat the blonde to a pulp. He eventually calms himself, okay he realised you had the cloak and there was no logical way he could get in there but still baby steps. As Ginny fell asleep in his arms he lay staring at the ceiling, unable to sleep at the thought you, his sister, his twin spending the night with him, his enemy, his bully.
He always knew you were softer with Slytherins, a trait you got from Lily as you often gave the twins a piece of your mind when the targeted those just because they were Slytherin, and you defended some of them. But Draco? The boy that called Hermione a mudblood the first time they met, insulted Ron for his family’s situation, bullied him and many others countless times, that Draco, how could you?
He pretended to be asleep when you returned to your dorm, sneaking a glace he saw you looked tired, a little sad and had some purple marks on your neck. In that moment he didn’t know what this was, was it two enemies relieving the tension? Had Draco seduced you to get back at him? He was going to have a civil conversation but when he saw the way Draco’s eyes were on you at the station, the smirk on his face that now had new meaning and he just snapped
The following morning you and Harry hadn’t spoken, luckily your parents nor godparents had noticed probably just assuming you were tired from the train “So I was talking with Molly and thought that we could head the burrow for a breakfast on Christmas day? Maybe we could bring the presents with us?” Your mum suggests with a smile
Both you and Harry perk up at the idea “Can I invite Hermione?” Harry asks as she chops down on a bit of pancake
“She’s already coming, I believe Ron bet you to it” your father wiggles his eyebrows knowingly
“Will you be coming Uncle pads, Uncle moony?” you ask with a small smile whilst trying your best to avoid Harrys eyes
Sirius nods “Yup considering our little pup will be there” he grins at you
“Where is she anyway? I thought the shop was closed for the holidays?” James inquires
Your uncle hums “It is but there is some work that needs to be done” he replies shrugging while Remus and Lily let out small chuckles
“Mum? Uncle?” Harry eyes them as do you although you have a feeling you know what it’s about
Lily and Remus share a look before the latter turns to his husband “You’ve really not caught on yet, have you?” he says amused while you smile knowing for sure what’s going on
Sirius’ face drops “Caught on to what?” he asks baffled
“Oh!” you let out a small giggle as the penny drops for your dad “Which one?” he makes an F with his hands before attempting to do the same a G but gets confused with how to do it
Your godfathers’ eyes widen as his mouth forms an ‘o’ watching your dad still trying to make the letter “Oh no she’s too young for that” he shakes his head wiggling his pointer finger
“She’s almost 20” Your mum interjects “Besides Fred is a nice boy” she says
Remus nods in agreement “I mean he did take her to the yule ball love…all the signs were there” he places his hand over his husbands giving it a little squeeze
“I thought that was just as friends like y/n with the other one” Sirius sits back in his chair like he’s just heard she’s gotten married or something “Still…she too young and Fred is too similar to me” he huffs before eyeing you “You better not get any ideas” he points at you
Harry scoffs “Too late” he says but then his mouth drops, a flash of regret across his face before he looks at you apologetically, sure he was mad but that was nothing compared to if your parents and godparents found out
“Y/n, what is he talking about?” your father looks at you, the look he’d never given you before, usually his stare down was fake because as soon as your mother left he’d be wanting every detail of the prank or mischief you just pulled but right now it was real and it scared you
“Umm…” you flounder trying to speak eyes becoming glassy, your brother while interested in knowing all the details, okay definitely not all the details, felt awful seeing the sister, the sister that was never phased by anything looking so fearful
“Sweetie?” your mother gently prods
Your mouth must have opened countless times before something came out “I was going to tell you after graduation” you saw lowly, Harrys eyebrows knit together, tell you?
“Who?” your dad question, tone almost judgemental
“Jamie” your mum scolds but you can tell she’s eager to know
You stab at the food on your plate “Bit of a double standard guys” you say trying to avoid the subject of who you were dating “Harrys dating Ginny and you pat his back, but when the girls start dating someone we get the third degree”
“Don’t do that” Sirius eyes you “I know that tactic, I taught you that tactic” you knew he was right and now you were screwed
You stay quiet for a second debating your options but none seem great, only idea you could think of was throwing your pancake at him and apparating the fuck out of there “He’s in my year” you admit reluctantly
“House?” your dad inquires
You freeze, eyes flicking to Harry who looks somewhere between worried and disappointed before looking at your mother, giving her pleading eyes as she is the only one at the table that could maybe understand. She seems to catch on, closing her eyes for a second before a reassuring smile emerges on her face, your uncle Remus also catches on while Sirius and James take a few seconds but when they do you grimace at your fathers’ tone
“Oh hell no” your father shakes his head “There is no way you’re allowed to date a Slytherin…I mean I don’t want you dating anyone till your 30 but a snake oh no” he says a little melodramatically
“Are you mad?” your uncle adds earning a nudge followed by an annoyed whisper you couldn’t make out from Remus
“Leave her alone she can make her own decisions” your mother defends you but a part of you knew even that would be short lived once his name was revealed “How long have you been together sweetie?”
“Since the start of 5th year but we had been friends since around out 2nd” you elaborate, seeing your brothers jaw drop in your peripherals
“Since 5th year?” Harry says in shock, his brain trying to process it “Do…do you love him?” he asks warily
You nod “Very much” your eyes start to tear up
“What Slytherin?” your father finally asks the dreaded question and when you don’t answer he and your uncle begin guessing
“Nott?” nothing
“Zabini?” nah da
“Better not be Crabbe or Goyle” that earns a look of disgust “Thank god” your uncle sighs in relief
“Malfoy” Your father says jokingly, your uncle laughing with him but it quickly stops as they see your face “MALFOY!” he says furious
“Dad…” you squeak out
“No” Sirius shakes his head “You can’t be dating my cousin’s purist spawn” he refuses to believe it
You look at your other uncle who looks a little disappointed, your eyes then go to your mum who looks more conflicted than anything else “How could you love someone like him? I thought I raised better” that hurt, your father so enraged he couldn’t register the heartbreak on your face
“You aren’t to see him again” Sirius says your father nodding next to him
“Uncle Remus?” you look at him but he has a look that tells you he does agree with your other uncle and father “Mum” you turn to her, voice cracking
“Sweetie…I don’t...umm” she looks like she’s trying to process but the lack of understanding makes you stand up
“Where are you going? You aren’t leaving until we get to the bottom of this” your father points to the table “Don’t you-” he starts but you apparate away
Your family stares in shock for a few minutes before Lily speaks up “You knew, didn’t you?” she asks looking at Harry who nods slowly
“You told us Malfoy was a prick?” Sirius exclaims “Harry how could you let that ferret wiggling his way-”
“Love” Remus places his hand on Sirius’ back rubbing circles in attempt to calm him “How long have you known?” he then turn to the boy inquiring in a gentler tone
Harry sighs “I knew she was sneaking around with someone but I didn’t know who because she was taking the map with her every time. So last night I stole it and that’s when I saw her meeting Draco…I hadn’t had time with the train and things to talk to her about it” he confesses
“Saw her where on the map?” his father asks in a tone that makes Harry think he’s going to murder someone
“The astronomy tower” he lies
“Where Harry?” his father sees right through them
He closes his eyes “His dorm room” Harry days quietly and that was it for his father and uncle both standing
“Where are you going?” Lily stands up as well
“To get some answers” James replies before walking over, looping his arm with Sirius
Sirius pulls out his wand “And to kick arse” he states before apparating himseld and James
Lily and Remus barely have any time to react to them as Harry stands up “Hon-” she starts but he cuts her off
“Sorry mum but I need to go find y/n” Harry apologises before apparating himself
“Firewhisky?” Remus turns to Lily who looks like in all her years of dealing with four marauders, 3 children of marauders and the entire Weasley clan this is what was going to kill her, not because she was angry at you but from the stress of the situation
“Yes please” she nods quickly
“I’ll get the emergency chocolate too”
Tumblr media
Draco sighed as he lay on one of the couches in the library, staring up at the ceiling, it hadn’t even been a day and he already missed you. His thoughts were interrupted by a bang, jolting up as he hears it again almost like someone is trying to break the front door down. Distantly, he hears how he assume can only be Dobby opening the door followed by muffled shouts
Standing up he walked over to the door, heart stopping as he recognised the voice “COUSIN!” Sirius screeched
“What is the meaning of this?” Lucius exclaimed as he greeted their uninvited guests
“Sirius?” Narcissa says completely bewildered as she sees them “Potter?”
Both of them had no idea how to react, even Lucius was concerned by the fury in their eyes but hid it well “Why are you here?” he asks clearly annoyed
“Your son seduced my daughter” James accuses
Draco felt like he was going to throw up, oh Salazar did he have nightmares about this day, it was a good run, he thought placing a mental bet of which of the people in the next room was going to kill him first
“That’s ridiculous” his mother laughs at the notion “The only think we know of your daughter from Draco is how annoying your son is”
“Besides our son already learned his lesson with dating Half-breeds from the Parkinson’s daughter” Lucius states,
Draco jaw clenches at the slur “Don’t you dare call her that!” Sirius speaks up “Where is he?”
Draco didn’t know if he should run, hide or just accept his fate but luckily his mother came to his rescue “He isn’t here” Narcissa replies quickly
“Bullshit” James mutters
“What makes you think they are an item?” Lucius asks sceptically
“Harry caught them and she revealed they’ve been together for over two years” Sirius informs them
He just has to ruin everything, Draco sighs leaning his head on the door not realising it was ajar, stumbling a little as he reveals himself “Oh shit”
“Oh shit is right” James replies
It was safe to say Draco getting your fathers blessing was most like off the table as he and Sirius bolted towards him and then proceed to chase him around the house and surrounding grounds for a good ten minutes before they were all spent, hunched over catching their breath outside in the garden
“Why” James puffs staring up at him
“Why what?” Draco pants brain not quite functioning from the impromptu workout
“Y/n” Sirius runs his hands through his hair, putting it into a bun as if he’s gearing to fight the boy “Explain to us how a bully like yourself manages to worm their way into my goddaughter panties”
“Mate” James shoves him “Terribly worded...” he points at him before Draco “...but you have 1 minute to explain before I catch my breath enough to run again”
“We worked on a project in second year and we became friends, in secret because me and Harry hated each other…” Draco begins explaining only to be cut off
“Why? Jealous of my son?”
“Yeah” Draco to their surprise admits “Harry is better than be at almost everything, he rejected my friendship which in hindsight was fair enough. I was a prick especially in first year but y/n’s friendship helped me realise that all those ideals my parents fed me were crap. And no, it didn’t happen right away and I still called people slurs but she never gave up on me…she never abandoned and I fell head over heels for her” he explains
“Why keep it a secret then?” Sirius asks with a scoff “If you love her so much why hide her like dirty laundry-”
“Pads mate, try to paraphrase in a way that doesn’t make me want to hit you too” James snaps at him before once more turning back to Draco “Again the question stands”
Draco could have laughed at your father and godfather if he didn’t hear the former say ‘too’ in reference to punching “For a few very good reasons” is all he could say
“State them” your father says crossing his arms as he and Sirius waited not so patiently
“Okay…” Draco takes a breath “First, we didn’t know how us being together would work out and…we knew it would cause a tidal wave of gossip…we also didn’t want everyone butting in and watching us constantly, having all of their opinions affecting and putting strain on our relationship” James and Sirius’ face soften as they quickly realise the boy makes valid points “Second when we knew this was real and we were in love we were scared that not only my family but hers would overreact…can you blame us considering…” he gestures to them “And third, we were going to reveal everything but after we graduated, got access to out accounts so if I was disowned or she was we would have funds to rely on”
The last point makes your father think “Wait you and her were planning on what running away together?” that was when Draco saw it hit him, the regret washing over his face, a similar one on Sirius’ as well
“That was plan B” Draco mutters “Hasn’t y/n told you this?” he asks confused as what exactly occurred before he starts to worry
“No…” James shakes his head before he curses “Fuck”
“Where is she?” Draco knew he had no right to ask but he needed to know
Sirius shrugs “We don’t know she apparated away and then we were so mad we came to kick your ass” he points at him
“What? I need to find her” he pulls out his wand racking his brain to figure out where you could be as he figures it out he hears his father
“Don’t you dare” Lucius stares him down with the biggest glare he had ever seen, if looks could kill Draco would be death about 3 times over “You leave and you are disowned” he says plainly “Cut off and never welcome in this house again” he gestures to the grounds
Draco looks at his father flicking to James and Sirius a moment before he smiles “So be it” and with that he thought of you and apparated
He landed somewhere in the woods, not quite sure why until he catches sight of a treehouse. You had brought him here once when you both managed to sneak out and see each other once over summer, you told him how you and harry built it and it was still your safe space even if Harry had long since grown out of it.
As he climbed the ladders he heard sniffles, heart clenching as his head popped up and saw you curled in a little ball crying “Love?” he says softly as he stands up properly but it still startles you
You stare at him for a second before launching yourself into his arms not questioning how he is here just happy that he is “Draco” you mumble as you burying your head into his chest “I’m so sorry, I was reckless and harry found the map and now my whole family…” you ramble
“I know” he cuts you off gently
You pull back moving to sit on one of the old benches “How?” you ask as he sits down next to you
He takes your hand in his “Your Father and uncle paid me a visit” he cringes but chuckles as your eyes comedically widen
“They didn’t…merlin I’m so sorry dray” you close your eyes as you lean your head on his shoulder
He lifts your head up smiling at you “Hey it’s okay” he brushes some hair for your face “It felt kinda nice to have it all out in the open…even if I thought I was going to get Kedavra-ed for a moment” he let sout a nervous chuckle
You giggle a little “How did they react? Your parents I mean” you squeeze his hand
He let out an empty laugh “Could have been better…” he hesitates before continuing “I’m officially homeless, disowned and only wealth is the clothes on my back” you mouth parts “But…I’ve never felt this free in my whole life” he reassures you
“Dray…” you didn’t know what to say
“You don’t need to say anything” he shakes his head like he read your mind “Although maybe help me convince your parents to let me stay with you…or failing that I could live here” he jokes to which you giggle nudging your nose with his
Your moment is cut short by your brothers’ voice “You really love her, don’t you?” he asks in a much softer tone that Harry was expecting
“Yeah” Draco answers without hesitation
Your brother nods “I don’t like it…” he points “And I might actually throw up if I think about the logistics too hard” that makes small smiles appear on you and Draco’s face “Oh and you bet your arses there will be a ban on PDA around me but…” he takes a deep breath “If you’re happy then I’m happy. I might not understand, or how all this…” he motions to the two of you “…happened but you’re my sister and I love you” he finishes
You both stand up and walk over “Thanks” you say giving him a hug, staying there for a bit before pulling away
Harry kisses your forehead before looking at Draco who’s standing rather awkwardly but Harry could see the visible weight that had been lifted from him, he looked genuinely relived…however even with that in mind “I’m not hugging you”
“Wouldn’t want you too” Draco replies with a small smile
Tumblr media
“Lily, Moony you here?” James calls out as he and Sirius return to the house
“Living room!” they hear Remus distantly shout
Walking James smiles “Hey…” he greets before seeing the scene “Oh no the emergency chocolate is out” he mumbles to himself
“HI!” Lily cheeses at them from the couch
“Is she…” Sirius whispers at his husband gesturing
“A tad tipsy” James and Sirius nod “yes…I am too but just a little bit” he motions with his thumb and forefinger
James looks around as he seats a seat next to his wife, cuddling her back as she wraps her arms around him “Where Harry?” he wonders
“Went to find y/n” Remus replies, also becoming a little touchy and as he leans into Sirius, taking his hand “How did it go?” he asks sobering up ever so slightly “You didn’t actually kill him, did you?”
James shakes his head “No but he is officially disowned and homeless” he informs
“What?!” Remus look at them in shock while Lily seems too tired to register
“It’s true” your voice makes them jump, all turning up to see you, Draco and Harry standing in the door way
“Hi” Draco greets with a cringy smile and the most awkward wave known to wizard
“You think there’s room for one more at the table mum?” you look towards her
“Course sweetie…hello Draco I’m Li…lily” she says gleefully with a little hiccup
“She’s a little drunk” Sirius informs you
“Oh…” you let out a small laugh “Dad, can Draco stay with us?” you ask hopefully
“No” your expression drops
“But he can stay with us” Sirius adds, yours and Draco’s faces lighting up “It wouldn’t be right not to help you the way I was when I got disowned, besides we have a spare room now our daughter has moved out and…” he remembers the original conversation “…apparently seeing Fred Weasley…Moons I need to make another drop-in visit…” Sirius says standing up
“Oh no you don’t…” Remus pulls him down quickly before turning to Draco “But yeah sure you can stay with us”
“Thank you” Draco gives them a grateful look
“You’re welcome but if you hurt her I’ll kill you” Your father threatens
“And I’ll make sure it’s slow” Sirius adds
“And I’ll eat you…oh yeah those rumours are true…what?” Remus turns to Sirius who nudges him before laughing nervously “I may be a little drunker than I thought…the emergency chocolate is boozy” he confesses to which you, Draco and Harry chuckle
“Welcome to the family son” Your father says but scrunches up his face as soon as the last word exited his mouth “Nope too weird…Just welcome”

Dressed in Crimson
Spencer Reid x Female Reader (Royalty AU)
Tumblr media
Summary: Spencer is a stable boy with a passion for learning and Reader is the princess of the palace that he serves in. They’ve been in a secret relationship, the two grow restless about not being able to be out in the open.
A/N: Guys I’m so excited for this one I really really loved writing it- it’s my fourth fic for my 30 fics in 30 days for April and it’s also written for @omgbigfluffwriting !!! I kinda immersed myself into this quite a bit- and it’s my longest oneshot I’ve ever written 🤭The specific historical period theyre in is not specified and the world that they’re in is entirely fictional and not based on any specific point in history- if you’ve ever watched Merlin that’s kinda the vibe I was thinking of just without the magic lol (please still ignore that the gif does not have an accurate clothing choice from Spencer I just wanted a good shot of his hair that I thought of while writing this) i feel like it’s becoming so obvious how much I love historical fiction lol 😂 I’d like to hear from you guys also so if you want to drop me an ask here! It can be about anything 🥰 hope y’all enjoy!!!
Warnings: 18+, Reader has a horrible Father, subtle hints about sexism, Classism, Period typical clothing, Reader and Spencer fight for a little bit, Smut, Dom Spencer, Fingering, Handjob, Unprotected Sex, Day dreaming about fucking in public, Spencer’s possessive as hell, Ignoring the potential consequences of a creampie
Main Masterlist Word count: 4.7k
My day started out like any other with my corset made of whalebone being cinched tightly around my figure with my chemise underneath of course. Every time the ends of the laces were pulled taught on my body I thought of the days where I could get away with not having this wretched piece of clothing cutting off my breath. Those days had been so long ago, when I was just a small child, almost so long ago that I had to strain my memory to recall it. It wasn’t even until I was done clutching my mother’s skirts before I started to be forced into the confines of the worst invention in history. I would have rather muck in the mud in pants like the men, unless there was a reason for me to actually want to wear a dress.
Today, I had chosen a crimson colored gown, one of my only favorites. The front of the bodice was adorned with embroidery, one embroidered with a glistening gold thread. The sleeves were long and ever so slightly off my shoulders, ending just at my wrist. It had been perfectly handcrafted just for me, a seamstress being hired to slave away at each detail with precision. If it had been up to my father the seamstress would have been paid little to nothing for this masterpiece, but you had your own coins stashed away from your allowance to give extra to anyone that gave you goods and services.
The dress was my favorite almost solely because of someone else’s appreciation for the lush fabric, no one needed to know about that though. I did like to look nice on certain occasions, but only special ones. There was no special occasion scheduled for me to have a reason for wearing it, well none that the greater majority of the court would know about.
Only my maid Emily knew what my excursion would be today, why I dressed up so nicely. There was no feasible way for me to hide my dalliances from her, especially the one I was about to go to as it required some higher levels of stealth to be able to evade my father’s guards.
His name was Spencer, one of my father’s stable boys. I loved him more than anything, definitely more than any potential match that was arranged for me.
I gifted him whatever I could without raising suspicion, though I often hid my purchases if someone asked by excusing them as more frivolous in nature, such as a new dress. Spencer had no real need for pretty things as he’d said before, except from myself- those were his past words not mine. And, he did express to me how much he loved the dress I was wearing right now, which was tied to how we had first met.
When I first met him I had been looking for a fabric in the market stalls. I hadn’t really wanted to, I was content with all the dresses that I owned right now, they had no ornament on them, just how I preferred. However, my father demanded I get something fancier for some sort of frivolous ball that was coming up that undoubtedly had no reason to take place besides bleeding everyone else dry.
I brushed hands with him for the first time as I was looking for the material I wanted, something just fancy enough to appease my father. The stall filled with fabrics bordered one that had stacks of books, I would have much preferred to be looking at that one. My hand had gotten close to the edge while I was inspecting a fabric and it had bumped into a man who was looking at one of the books.
When I had looked up to see who had brushed my hand I was met with frantic eyes filled with apology. His stuttered apology had covered my attempt to assure him that it was fine, it had taken me grabbing both of his hands to steady him for him to listen to my reassurance.
When he had introduced himself to me after I asked it flowed into a long conversation. I could have talked to him forever, I would be content to never talk to anyone else. For a stable boy he was exceptionally smart, which I learned was from his mother who had made sure he was educated even in poverty, specifically through having him read anything she could get her hands on. From then on our blossoming friendship had flourished, and had eventually developed into more.
I slung a shawl over my shoulders made out of a fabric of similar color to my gown and also grabbed a purse filled with coins with a smile due to my reminiscing . It wasn’t cold enough for one of my velvet cloaks just yet and most of the walk down to where Spencer was housed was indoors.
The walk from my rooms in the main part of the castle to the stables on the lower floor towards the East end was longer than I would have wanted. Truthfully, I wished I would not have to live in a castle at all, I’d rather live in the small house that Spencer lived. It was just past the castle grounds at the edge of the surrounding village adjacent to the stables so he did not have to walk far for work in the mornings.
My feet tiptoed down the corridors carefully, I was lucky that I had figured out to be somewhat light on my feet otherwise I’d be caught swiftly for sure. I passed by the rooms of most of the lords and ladies staying at court, I always wondered why some chose to stay here, it was positively suffocating here. The door I used to go outside was through the kitchen, that had a myriad of breakable things strewn about that I had to stealthily avoid. Luckily, I knocked nothing over that would have woken up the cooks who slept just a room over. Turning the handle of the door had to be a slow process so no one would hear the creak of the knob while it was turned, but I did successfully make it out with no disturbance.
Beginning the stretch of my journey that was outdoors was perhaps the most risky. Guards were stationed around the perimeter of the castle in greater numbers compared to the ones indoors which were only stationed by important rooms. I weaved my way through, in some aspects it was even more confusing than the inside of the castle. Hiding behind each of the pillars was the most effective way to avoid them, the construction of them making a series of small blind spots. I had just snuck behind one of the last ones when one of the guards nearest to me moved forward a little. I stopped breathing immediately, holding it tight in my chest while I plastered myself as close as I could to the back of the pillar. My nails dug into the stone of the pillar in fear, if I was ever to be found sneaking out at night or worse in the presence of Spencer, I would either never leave my rooms again or be whisked away into marriage even earlier than planned.
When the guard did not move to investigate further I let go of the breath I was holding, still making sure to let go of it slowly so he could not hear me. Moving swiftly forward after I had taken a breath was a bit of a challenge, my knees had gone weak with fear. I pushed myself to take each step even with the weakness in my knees, there was no way I could linger any longer.
Finally I was no longer walking on stone, I was walking on the muddy earth now. It was nice to feel the ground under my feet instead of the harsh stone, it told me that I was now only a handful of strides away from Spencer’s home.
The leaves littering the ground mixing with mud crunched under my feet even as I tip toed carefully. The guards may be in the distance now, but I didn’t feel keen on testing how good their hearing may potentially be.
Passing the stables was the last marker for my journey, then I would be able to see his home too. As I passed the sleeping horses by anticipation began to replace the fear inside me. It had been a while since I had been able to come see him, making me yearn for his touch even more.
His home came into view, even in the dead of night I could make it out if I squinted my eyes hard. My pace picked up exponentially when I landed my eyes on his humble abode. It was a quaint home, fallen into disrepair as he could not afford to fix it on the meager salary that my father paid him. The purse of gold that I had brought with me was exactly for that, the repairs. He would most likely protest the gift just like any other thing I had tried to gift him. From my experience the most effective way to get him to accept anything was to leave it there with no conversation about it. I think it made him feel less guilty even though in my opinion he was owed the money in the first place, no one should have to live in squalor when they did their job every day without question or complaint.
When I finally was at the entrance of his home I entered through the door swiftly, too impatient to wait or knock. Stress melted from my shoulders when I caught sight of him, hunched over one of the books I had given him, candles strewn around to give him enough light to read.
The candles he had lit to be able to read in the night illuminated us both with a glow. He would always compliment me whenever we found ourselves in similar lighting such as this, but in my opinion there was no rivalry. Each time the candle flickered it brightened up every highlight of him, letting me see his wild curls, brown eyes deeper than any others I had ever seen, and a body that I had no doubt was crafted to perfection illuminated in a beautiful glow.
I went to compliment him just as he always did with me, but I became mesmerized when he stood up, then moving his way closer to me.
“It is nice to see you, it feels like it’s been an eternity.” It may seem dramatic for him to say that it felt that long, but I echoed his sentiment willingly.
“It is nice to see you too, Spencer. I agree it’s been far too long.” I was sure it had been at least a full moon cycle since we had the pleasure of being alone with one another, our duties to my father keeping us separated.
It had been painful whenever I would go out for a ride on my horse, to see him hand me the reins of my mare and be unable to reach out to touch him. There had been one day, about a week ago, that I had let my hand brush against his own for a moment while he handed the reins to me. It was an innocent brush of a touch, that also had a barrier in the form of my leather gloves. To anyone else it had meant nothing, but to me and him, it meant everything.
His eyes were blown wide with desire, as I suspected mine were as well. We let ourselves take in the sight of each other for a minute longer before Spencer broke the silence with a request,
“Drop your shawl, so I may see you better.” A stable hand commanding someone of such a stature such as I would’ve seen him whipped if it was any other person before him. His boldness was not unexpected, it had taken a while for him to grow so comfortable with my company. In truth, he had been quite scared when I had first met him. It was perfectly understandable considering his employer was my father, who was not known for his kindness. And, even then after his fear had faded he still had a shy exterior for a while, it only had been lifted when we began to become extremely comfortable around each other. We were each other's only form of solace in this world, we could only escape our reality when we were together.
Instead of having malice in my voice like other nobles would I simply pulled the shawl more taught around my shoulders and teased, “Why should I?”
The expression on his face was one of the ones I loved seeing on his face the most, a sly smirk. He came closer to me, with careful steps as if he was waiting for the right moment to pounce. We were so close together when he stopped moving, but still not touching. He was playing a game with me, not touching until I obliged him. As he leaned in to speak into the shell of my ear he was careful with the way he tilted his body forward so I could only feel his breath on the small portion of my skin, “Because you like it when I look at you.”
My arms fell to my sides releasing my shawl to fall from my shoulders onto the floor at his words, as they rang true. I did want him to look at me and also, of course touch me.
“You wore your favorite dress.” He observed, still not quite touching. I didn't need to answer the statement he made with the thought in my mind ‘I wore it for you’ because I knew he had already figured that out. His observational skills were keenly honed in by his constant reading whenever he had the chance, often reading books that I had gifted to him. He even sometimes read well into the night, straining his eyes in the darkness when the candle was almost merely a wick. I had found that out the first- and sadly, only time I had the opportunity to stay overnight. Since then I had pushed him to get more rest as I knew how hard he was worked to the bone during the day, courtesy of my father.
His eyes were staring at my dress, pupils blown wide, his mind seemingly off in another world maybe thinking about all the things he wanted to do to me.
“Please, touch me.” I didn’t need to speak loud, only a soft whisper for him to hear me because of how close he already was to me. So close, yet so far.
He raised his large hands, calloused from working so hard day in and day out. My own hands were soft from the expensive creams I had been pampered with since I was just a small child. I liked his hands better, they showed the hard work he used everyday to cultivate his beautiful mind and body.
I subtly licked my lips in anticipation of his touch, wanting to feel every inch of his hand roaming my body, from the tips of his fingers to where his palm met his wrist.
His fingers then started to trace over the top of my corset, just a hair away from touching the swell of my breasts. My chest was rising and falling with each breath, each inhale pushing it slightly closer to his fingers. With each fall of my chest I felt the need to quickly let go of my breath, so I could once again inhale and be brought closer to his touch.
“Please touch me.” I repeated, breathless from forcing myself to breathe into his touch.
“I am touching you.” His fingers still did not move to touch my skin, only the crimson accented in gold. It was his turn to tease me now, I was at his mercy, ready and waiting for it.
I could beg again, though quite obviously I could not convince him with it. As he was running his fingers over the cloth for what felt like the millionth time, still not touching me, I teased him back instead of begging, “No you are touching my dress.”
A mere ghost of a touch from his fingers then floated across my skin. What should have calmed my heaving chest from my gasping breaths only served to make my breathing even heavier. The slight touch was still not enough, only making my desire for his hands to roam every inch of my body even more severe.
“Perhaps I should take your corset off, to help you breathe better.” He said, as if he read my exact thoughts.
“I like your thinking.”
I was then spun around so my back was pressed into his chest. It soothes my desire for his touch some, but we both had barriers of cloth preventing me from fully feeling him. I could feel some of the warmth that was hidden underneath his shirt, which was made up of a much billowing white linen that compared to his trousers.
If my skirts were not so large I wondered if I were to push back if my behind would come in contact with his cock and whether or not his desire would be as prominent as the slickness dampening the bottom layer I was wearing. I’d have to find a way to find a pair of trousers then, sometime soon, so I could try to grind into him at a later date. There was no doubt that we’d surely find ourselves in a similar position again.
As his hands started to undo the laces of my corset with care, despite both of our desperation, a thought slipped out from his lips that I’m sure he intended to keep to himself, “I wish I could call you mine in public.”
“My father would kill you!” The taste of my voice would have been bitter in anyone’s mouth, quickly spat out in the same way I said those words. Perhaps my quick anger to his innocent thought would be insane to some, most would probably consider it a sweet thought. However, he knew from previous conversations that when those sweet thoughts were expressed that all I could feel was a heavy sadness sitting inside me, instead of desire.
Tears clouded my vision, so much so that I did not see Spencer’s arms come around me to envelop me in an embrace. I flinched a bit at first, but then melted when I realized it was him. We held each other for a while as I sobbed softly into his billowy white shirt.
He stroked my shoulder with his large hands that I loved, but the corset he had not taken off fully yet was blocking me from feeling his touch the way I wanted.
“Take it off please.” I begged softly, I wanted to feel his skin on mine, and not just his lips or his hands. I wanted to feel every inch of him.
The laces of my corset were already half undone because of his previous attempt at getting it off of me. He finished the job, pulling the corset off of my body, tossing it down to the floor. He may have loved the dress, but he was showing me through his actions that he loved what was underneath more.
Turning me around was his next step, so he could properly kiss me. The pressure was soft at first, as if he was testing the waters to see how I would feel. Feeling his soft lips on my own just made me want to pull him in further, and I did so. My fingers tangled into his curls as the kiss devolved into pure passion, we were both throwing ourselves fully into it, trying to express our feelings nonverbally.
His own hands moved to cup my breasts as he backed me into the cot he slept on every night. I did not let him push me down on the bed so he was on top of me like normal, this time I wanted to be on top for a while. When I straddled his hips the first thing I felt was his cock straining in his pants. I unbuckled them so I could wrap my hands around his cock, I wanted to feel his thick and heavy length in my hands. Precum was already dripping down his hard cock as I pumped his length with my hands. My own arousal was dampening the underneath of the skirt I still had on. Spencer confirmed it himself when he snuck his fingers underneath the fabric to play with my pleasure spots. We both groaned as his fingers entered inside me while he rubbed circles into my swollen pearl.
My skirt was bunched up in his hands, pulling up all the way to the tops of my thighs. He soon got fed up with the skirt being in the way though and maneuvered me to shuck it off of me as fast as possible. Being bare before him did not make me wither in self consciousness, it made me lean into his touch even more.
He leaned up to kiss me again while I grabbed his length and restraddled him. I was definitely wet enough to have him enter me, my separation from him making me desperate, it had been so long since we had the chance to be together like this.
I then sunk down on his length slowly, it was for me to adjust to his size and to relish in the feeling of him sliding inside me. I stilled on top of him as the back of my thighs hit the top of his, he filled me with perfection. Spencer only let me be still for a little while before his hands gripped my hips and started to guide me to roll my hips. The pace I set- well Spencer was the one who set it, was slow and deep, I was languidly rolling my hips while he thrusted up into me at a similar pace.
My face twisted in pleasure as his thrusts became more powerful, still at the same pace but with more force behind them.
“Fuck- I want everyone to know that you’re mine!” It was the exact same thing he had spoken to me earlier that had sparked anger and melancholy inside me. This time it caused a spark of pleasure instead, making me think about him fucking me in front of everyone claiming me as his.
“My father would kill you.” This time when I said it it was gasped into his mouth with little to all anger disappeared from it.
My words made Spencer growl which was swallowed by a possessive kiss. He then flipped me over roughly, my back now pressed into the cot. A high pitched squeak had escaped my lips unintentionally in surprise, it was quickly changed into a moan when he entered me again. This time the pace did not start off slow as I did not need to adjust to him inside of me.
“I don’t care.” His speech was agitated as he pounded into me, holding my legs open with both hands spreading me out for him to see everything, “No matter what anyone says or does, you’re mine.”
Pleasure sparked through me at his possessive words, I grabbed desperately at the cotton sheets trying to hold onto something as my finish was fast approaching. When the cotton sheets were not enough of a stabilizer for me I lifted my hands up to wrap around the back of his neck and pull him close.
“Come on I know you’re close, I’m close too baby.” My nails dug into his neck and back during the latter half of his sentence causing him to slightly wince. I knew he enjoyed it though because of the question that he groaned out next, “Can I cum inside you?”
Biting my lip hard was painful as I nodded my head in response to his question that had me falling over the edge. The consequences of him finishing inside me danced in the back of my head, I chose to ignore them as he did. I did not care as he filled me and I rode out my release, even if I was to somehow get pregnant because of our recklessness it did not matter. I’d gladly have his child, even if it meant I’d have to go on the run.
Instead of falling on top of me directly after finishing like I’ve heard most men do with their wives he gently removed himself from my entrance and laid down beside me on the cot. Bliss was mingling in the air between us, both unburdened by any of our problems that would become a reality as soon as I left for the night. For now we would just hold onto the bliss until it was cruelly snatched away from reality.
Spencer had a solution as always to our problems, and seemed to be thinking about the same thing I was with his next suggestion,
“Run away with me.” We were both covered in sweat that had cropped up from our activities, a contrast to the chilly air outside and in the castle. It was nice to feel warm every time I was in his arms, It was hard to resist being greedy and deciding to stay in his arms forever. It had crossed my mind more than once, but there was always something stopping me from going through with it fully. I opened my mouth to point out all the reasons why that would not be possible when he added, “And, before you say no I want to ask- what’s stopping you?”
His reasoning was sound, as it often was. My mouth opened and closed, struggling to find a reasoning before I accepted that he was right. The only potential downfall was my father’s forces searching everywhere to find me, but it would be worth it. We could also easily cross the border into nearby lands ruled by someone else that was not in alliance with him. I already felt lighter thinking about being free from the confines of the castle- and hopefully my corset. Though I would have to keep the crimson dress I wore today, even if I only wore it around him, It was his favorite and it symbolized the day that we met. He glanced over at me just as I did the same, looking right into his eyes as I spoke,“Alright.”
The light that sparked in his eyes made my heart soar, I could feel just from his gaze how ecstatic he was to spend his life with me. I didn’t need any words to know how much he loved me.
We basked for a moment in the presence of our love, Spencer broke the silence again when he started planning,“You need to go pack!”
I moved myself to sit up even though my limbs protested, wanting to sleep after our post coital bliss. A soft smile was exchanged between the two of us, “I’ll pack light, only the stuff I need.”
The purse of gold I had brought for him would no longer be used to fund his repairs, but to fund our life together. I climbed on top of him again leaning forward to capture him in a kiss that was much more chaste than the ones earlier in the night.
“I. love. you.” He whispered in between kisses making my eyes wet with tears. They weren’t born out of sadness, but of happiness that I had someone to love me as much as Spencer did.
“I love you too, I will see you soon.” I pulled myself away from his lips even though I did not want to, I then got up to leave reluctantly. Though it was easier than previous departures as I knew that it would be the last one that I would have to complete. My whole being was lighter and happier than I had ever felt before as I snuck back with a spring in my step. The only hint of what I was about to do, where I was about to go, was the mud stained at the hemline of my crimson dress.

Soulmate AU Part 4 (final part):
Uther continues to be very OOC and Merlin is presented to the Kingdom; luckily enough, everyone already loves him. The Future starts to come together...
Part 1  Part 2  Part 3
The summer passed in much the same way the previous year had; awkwardly polite conversation between Merlin and Uther, Leon panicking at everything, Gwen being exasperated, Morgana and Merlin pissing about, and Arthur watching it all with exponentially growing fondness.
Eventually, it was Yuletide again. Yuletide meant Arthur’s 18th birthday. Arthur’s 18th birthday meant revealing Merlin to the Kingdom; announcing him as The Crown Prince’s Soulmate.
There was an odd mix of feelings surrounding the upcoming event. Both Arthur and Merlin were ecstatic at the idea of not having to hide and sneak around anymore, but Merlin was a foreign peasant boy. The common people would love him, Nobles and Foreign dignitaries? Not so much. Granted, Arthur had a powerfully intimidating presence, when he chose to display it, Morgana could glare anyone into submission, and even Leon was known to be passive aggressively threatening when it concerned Merlin’s safety and respect, but not all could be daunted into compliance. Merlin would surely face discrimination.
That, and the growing spotlight meant that it would become much harder to keep his magic a secret. With Uther’s insistence that Merlin be... part of the family, they’d already had a few close calls.
Thankfully, not much else had changed, or it had changed for the better. Arthur and Merlin still scared everyone else shitless when they popped up to each other, but Morgana’s visions seemed a lot less terrifying now. Leon still had heart palpitations when Merlin and The King were in the same room, but Gwen, Gaius, and Hunith relaxed more; the Physician especially could see the pride glowing in Uther’s eyes, and the awkward fondness he held for Merlin (even if that wouldn't protect him if Uther discovered his magic).
Nevertheless, no ones’ fears or aspirations stopped the passage of time (though Merlin, in his increasing power, had put it on his “List of Things to Try Before I Die”), and Arthur’s crowning ceremony crept closer, day by day.
Hunith, Merlin, Leon, Gwen, and Gaius were gifted front row seats to the event, and as annoyed as Uther was at having the front row taking by commoners, a servant, and a young knight, he didn’t dare argue; he’d learnt that it was pointless now. Morgana was stood behind Uther’s throne at her own seat, giving Arthur a rare smile, not a hint of teasing in her expression, and Arthur returned it easily, comforted by the dream she told him she had the previous night (of adoring crowds and a grinning Merlin) despite his nerves.
The ceremony of course went of without a hitch, a rare smile on Uther’s face, and tears on all the faces of Arthur’s front row.
After an uproarious round of applause and chants of “Long Live The King, Long Live The Prince!”, the room cleared, leaving only Uther, Arthur, Morgana, Merlin, and a few faceless guards.
(Gaius, Hunith, Gwen, and Leon rushed off, wanting to be at the front of the crowds in the courtyard when Arthur and Merlin were presented to the Kingdom.)
Merlin didn’t hesitate in rushing up the steps to Arthur, wrapping his soulmate in a tight hug and whispering his pride into his blushing ear. For once, Morgana didn’t roll her eyes at the display of affection; Arthur may have occasional spurts of arrogance, and the two of them still acted like immature children occasionally, but she loved them both dearly. Uther did roll his eyes, though he could not hide his fondness from Morgana, who raised (yet another) teasing eyebrow at him. He glared at her half-heartedly before clearing his throat, and the boys jumped apart with a start.
He wordlessly nodded towards the door of the Throne Room, and walked out regally, his steps fast and heavy and his cloak billowing behind him. Merlin and Arthur followed quickly, hand in hand, and Morgana walked closely behind them, the guards bringing up the rear. The group finally made it to the large double doors that opened out onto the balcony above the courtyard, though it was two corridors previously that they began to hear the cheering and festivities below.
Arthur could feel Merlin’s hand shaking in his own, and squeezes it comfortingly, giving him a reassuringly soft smile as he murmurs, so Uther can’t hear them:
“Don’t worry, it’ll only be a few minutes, then we’ll come back in. You’ll be introduced to nobles and such during the feast,-”
When Merlin begins to look even more distressed, Arthur rolls his eyes good-naturedly and continues before his Warlock can interrupt him:
“-yes, I know, we’ll have to mingle, but this evening, it’s just us and the others. We’ll take some food and wine back to yours, and we can have some fun and all fall asleep in front of the fire together. Alright?”
Merlin takes a deep breath and nods, but before he can say anything, Uther stops his conversation with one of the guards and abruptly turns around, his face tersely concerned.
He takes one look at the boys before tutting and stepping towards them. Arthur freezes in shock as Uther begins to run a gloved hand through his hair, neatening it out and flattening it properly under the newly placed crown before stepping back again with a satisfied nod of the head. Arthur’s wide eyes stare straight ahead, and Morgana (having snuck in front of them to watch the whole ordeal) has to stop herself from snorting at his face. If she thought that was funny... well.
Next, Uther’s eyes move to Merlin, where he gives an even more disapproving tut and steps forward once more. He removes one of his gloves quickly, wetting his thumb with his tongue before wiping it just a little too harshly along Merlin’s nose, muttering-
“How the hell are you always so Godamn grubby?”
-to himself. Morgana doesn’t manage to hold in her giggles at that, clamping a hand over her mouth as she dedicates this whole scene to memory forever. Arthur is staring at his father with not even an attempt to hide his bafflement, but at this point, Uther is too busy brushing invisible lint off of Merlin’s shoulders to notice the incredulous stares from the three teenagers (and all the guards).
He finally steps back, huffing out a sigh, and muttering-
“That will have to do, I suppose.”
-before turning back to the doors and gesturing to the guards. Morgana, and Arthur have only a moment to regain their composure before they are ushered out on the balcony; Merlin staying back as he had been informed to do that morning, though he can hear the cheers get impossibly louder as the three royals greet their people.
Arthur glances back, just quickly, giving him one last smile before facing his people and standing in support of his father’s kingly speech:
“My people! Today, on this year’s Winter Solstice, my son has come of age!-”
The crowds had quietened significantly when Uther began, but another cheer went up at his words, and he paused, holding a silencing hand up:
“-I now present him to you, as Crown Prince Arthur Pendragon, heir to the throne of Camelot, my successor!”
His hand moves to gesture at Arthur, and the Prince steps forward as The King steps back, a wide smile on the blonde's face as his people cheer for him. He waves back, eyes searching the crowd for Hunith, Gaius, Gwen, and Leon; they meet gazes just as Uther steps forward once more, holding his hand up again:
“There is other news! It is...-”
He looks to Arthur, settling a hand on his shoulder and giving him a small smile. His voice quietens a little, but it can still be heard by the crowd:
“-it is with great pride, that I announce-”
The moment ended as quickly as it had started as Uther turns back to the crowds below, raising his voice again:
“-that my son has found his soulmate!!-”
Arthur had been expecting loud cheers, but their audience grows quiet and still at the announcement, as if frozen in suspense. As he peers over the stone barrier, he can see almost everyone in the crowd pairing off slightly, pulling their soulmates closer as they wait with baited breath to see their Prince’s partner.
Inside, Merlin takes a deep breath, but relaxes slightly when he sees Arthur unclench his own nervous fist, holding it behind him in preparation, invitation, for Merlin to take it in just a few moments:
“-I present to you, a close family friend of the royals,-”
(Morgana scoffs and rolls her eyes, but thankfully no one is paying her any attention.)
“-a skilled physician in training, and a trusted citizen of this Great Kingdom,-”
He gestures towards the door behind him, and Merlin takes his first shaky step forward, coming into line with Arthur as Uther finishes:
“Merlin, of Ealdor!”
Arthur and Merlin walk to the front of the balcony, hand in hand, as the loudest cheers Merlin has ever heard explode from the crowd. Despite the thunderous noise, Merlin can still pick out the cheers of his mother, uncle, friend, and older brother, and the leisurely applause from Morgana behind him, and he smiles in spite of his nerves. Arthur squeezes his hand once more, and they raise their joined fists to the crowds as they grin, struggling to hold in their laughter at the sheer amount of joy on the faces of everyone (bar Uther, of course, he just looked marginally happy)  present.
Merlin has become even more recognised around the kingdom; normally seen trailing Gaius (who is also well-known, and well-loved) or, as inappropriate as it might be (at least according to Uther’s council), hanging around with Morgana and Gwen during the day. The castle’s servants and the majority of the knights had guessed that Merlin was the soulmate of either Prince Arthur or the Lady Morgana, what with how often he was with them and the way King Uther was apparently ok with that, and gossip spread like wildfire. But the loud cheers just drive home how well-loved Merlin is, and he tears up in response.
Merlin and Arthur finally step away from the edge of the balcony, and Uther continues his address of the people, though it passes by in a bit of a blur for Merlin, and he tunes out fairly quickly. He’s vaguely aware of Arthur running a soft thumb over his knuckles, and Morgana stepping towards him to clutch the edge of his tunic (loud crowds had never been her thing), but the speech and the cheering are drowned out by his racing thoughts.
~
Uther’s speech finally came to an end and the crowd dissipated. The King rushed off immediately, after sending what could almost be described as a respectfully fond nod in Merlin’s direction, but Morgana, Arthur, and Merlin luckily had nothing pressing to attend to before the feast, and had around an hour of time to waste (read: relax).
Despite Leon escorting the three of them to Merlin and Hunith’s home dressed in full armour, sword strapped to his hip, the journey took twice as long as it normally did, with various nobles and citizens alike wanting to stop them in the street and congratulate them. Arthur and Merlin were endlessly polite and extremely grateful for the support of their (now shared) people, but Leon’s forceful insistence that they “have somewhere important to be, My Lords, My Lady” went quietly thanked.
Hunith, Gaius, and Gwen met them at the house, and a round of tight hugs was shared; all staring fondly when Hunith wouldn’t let Merlin go for love nor money, whispering tearful exclamations of pride in his ear.
The hour felt like it passed in mere minutes, but it was enough time at least for Merlin to relax a little. Morgana and Gwen helped Hunith get ready, and Merlin definitely did NOT tear up when she came out of her room dressed like royalty, a string of Morgana’s pearls around her neck. Arthur and Morgana had deliberately stored a spare set of clothes here so they didn’t have to go back to the castle to change, and the Prince just about managed to force Merlin into a new jacket and cloak (”Why?!”  “Because you have to, it’s protocol, you have to be dressed differently.”  “That’s fucking stu-”  “Merlin, I love you, but shut up and get changed.”  “...Prat.” ) .
The seating arrangements weren’t too terrible. As per normal, Uther sat at the head of the table, with Arthur around the corner on the King’s right and Morgana to his left. Merlin sat in between Arthur and his mother; Leon was, unfortunately, on guard duty, though thankfully he was being assigned to Prince Duty (training, hunts, patrols, bodyguard, etc) more and more, meaning he was stood at the wall behind the two boys.
Thankfully, the only stranger anywhere near Merlin was a respected Camelot noble seated opposite him, and he seemed far more interested in boasting about his son to the King in the hopes of winning him a knighthood than he was in Merlin, and payed barely any attention to him other than the occasional distasteful glare (they did not go unnoticed by Arthur, and simply guaranteed that his prick of a son wasn’t going to end up anywhere near a sword).
So all in all, the feast wasn’t too bad. Merlin’s stomach was turning a little, but Arthur’s hand on his thigh under the table and his mother’s shoulder occasionally brushing against his own calmed him right down, though he still kept well away from any alcohol or too-rich foods, worried about making a fool of himself or turning his stomach even more.
The Gang also had Gwen serving them. Morgana had given up on her pleas to have her join them at the table fairly quickly; she could argue with Uther endlessly on many things, but she knew she was never going to win this one. At Guinevere’s insistence that today wasn’t about her, and Morgana shouldn’t ruin Uther’s tenuous good mood on Arthur’s birthday AND coronation AND soulmate-reveal-day, she gave in. But Merlin appreciated the feeling of friendly eyes, both Leon’s and Gwen’s, on his back for the course of the feast.
Just like during the celebrations of Arthur’s knighting ceremony, the tables were cleared from the room to make way for music and dancing, though this time Arthur and Merlin didn’t have to hide their partnership.
Merlin’s stomach turned more at the mingling he was forced to do, answering awkward questions about the purity of his blood and where he came from and his education and his understanding of social etiquette, almost all of which were phrased in condescending and/or downright spiteful ways. But the way Arthur’s arm, looped through his, tensed, and the scowl the Prince sported when Merlin couldn’t bring himself to, partnered with Leon’s comforting shadow (and even Uther’s, when the question’s strayed into cruelty) made him feel at least justified in his discomfort.
Morgana, at the quiet request of Merlin, spent the entire night by Hunith’s side, shielding her from the malicious glaring of nobles who felt cheated by her accidental winning of a position in the royal family. She was granted at least a little respect due to her being a relation of Gaius, who was highly respected and close to the King, but that was about as far as her favour went, and she was eternally grateful for Morgana’s steadfast presence and silent-but-deadly brand of defence.
The night passed slowly, but not so unpleasantly that Merlin was too desperate for it to end, though that changed rather jarringly when he found himself without Arthur for the first time. The Prince and Merlin had been stood next to each other, though involved in different conversations; thankfully for Merlin, he had been having a rather lovely chat about country-life with the wife of a knight. It was when she was pulled away by her husband to converse with another that Merlin realised that Arthur had also been pulled away by whoever it was he had been talking to.
Merlin tensed when he couldn’t immediately spot his soulmate through the crowd, but took a calming breath when he did spot Leon stood dutifully against the opposite wall, Guinevere next to him. That was fine, it wasn’t Arthur, but it was better than nothing, and he allowed his anxiety to swirl in his lungs for only a moment before he began his soft-stepped journey across the hall.
He caught Leon’s eye, thankfully, and the knight frowned slightly at the empty space next to him before sending a reassuring smile his way, nodding in encouragement and understanding.
Alas, he only made it halfway when he was stopped by a rather harsh hand on his shoulder.
He turns around, barely swallowing a gasp and a flinch, only to come face to face with the noble he had been sat opposite during the feast. The hand was uncomfortably tight on his shoulder, and Merlin wanted more than anything to push it away, but instead he forced a smile on his face and bowed his head respectfully, hoping beyond hope that Arthur would make a reappearance or Leon would see his discomfort and be able to come up with an excuse to abandon his post:
“Lord Otto, a pleasure to see you again.”
The drunken Lord let out a huff of sarcastic laughter, pressing his thumb even more severely into Merlin’s collarbone:
“Hmm, a pleasure indeed. Tell me boy, how is it that you, a peasant, think yourself worthy of such a magnificent soulmate?”
Merlin’s eyes widen in shock. No one had been so obviously disdainful, but the over-indulgence in alcohol, the Lord’s privileged seat at the table, and Merlin's lack of any sort of protector had evidently given him a boost in confidence. Merlin stuttered for a few moments, not quite sure what to say, before quietly coming out with:
“Well... I... don’t really know, I-”
He’s interrupted by a far softer hand on his other shoulder, but is even more shocked when, instead of Leon or Arthur, he found The King stood by his side, flicking an incredibly scornful gaze between Lord Otto’s hand and face. It does nothing to dissuade the Lord, and Merlin can’t disguise his wince this time when the hand once again tightens it’s grip.
Merlin had hoped he’d been subtle, but the clenching of Uther’s jaw tells him he had not been; before he can worry about what social rule he had broken and how Uther was going to punish him for it, The King finally settled his glare on Otto’s face:
“I must insist that you remove your hand from my boy’s person, and refrain from making such improper inquiries.”
His cold tone almost sends a shiver down Merlin’s spine, but the confusion of having Uther being in defence of him (a Warlock) stops the reaction before it even starts. The Lord glances up at the crown sitting strongly on Uther’s head, seemingly reminding himself of his company, before dropping his hand from Merlin’s shoulder as if he’d been burned.
He bows his head shallowly, making himself look as subservient as his pride could manage, and Uther gives him a barely restrained look of disgust when he looks up again, interrupting any quivering apologies he might have made:
“It’s getting rather late, and you’ve indulged enough for one night, do you not think? I suggest you end your evening here, Lord Otto.”
All three knew that it was not a suggestion, and Otto bows once more before muttering a humiliated, red-faced “Right you are, Your Majesty” and waddling out of the hall, towards the guest chambers.
Merlin let out a breath, his face just a little flushed as Uther spares him a quick, concerned glance before pushing him gently towards an on-going conversation between Arthur and a group of knights on the other side of the band. Merlin lets out a relieved breath when he sees his partner, but quickly frowns in concern when he then sees the tense line of Arthur’s shoulders and the way his eyes were darting around the room. He’s obviously paying only the shallowest of attention to the conversation at hand; but then they meet gazes, and the tension drains out of him as he sends a relieved smile Merlin’s way.
Arthur politely excuses himself from the conversation, using the blinding smile that only made an appearance when he was manipulating courtiers and nobles, before making his way through the crowd towards Merlin, evidently trying to disguise his desperation. Merlin was absent-mindedly aware of Uther keeping pace with him, the supportive hand on his shoulder-blade not leaving even when Merlin sped up slightly.
(If Merlin had been thinking about anything other than just being at Arthur’s side again, he would’ve found the odd mix of disgust and gratitude for Uther’s presence very confusing.)
They finally reach each other and Arthur grabs Merlin’s hand gently, pulling him to his side and landing a soft kiss to his cheek. Uther finally removes his hand from Merlin’s back, and it’s the absence of touch that reminds Merlin of The King’s presence. He turns quickly, hand safely in Arthur’s grip, to give Uther a flushed, timid smile:
“I... uh... thank you, My Lord.”
Uther gives him a tight smile, though you’d have to be blind to miss the slight fondness in his expression as he shakes his head:
“Hmm, I’ve been looking for an excuse to get Otto out of here for at least an hour, the man is intolerable, his incessant rambling about his unremarkable son even more so.”
Merlin nodded awkwardly and tightened his hold on Arthur’s hand, but before either boy can say anything, Uther lets out a deep breath, relaxing his shoulders and settling hesitant hands on one of their shoulders each:
“I... am proud of you both, and I wish you all the happiness in the world. One day, this Kingdom shall be yours, and it will be golden under your rule.”
Merlin almost manages to forget the whole... unforgivable genocide thing, and gives The King a weak, though grateful smile, running his thumb over Arthur’s knuckles when he feels the blonde shake slightly. Arthur tears up at Uther’s words, but thankfully manages to keep his voice steady as he quietly replies:
“Thank you, father, we will do everything in our power to live up to your legacy.”
(An utter lie, considering they plan on undoing pretty much everything he’s known for the moment they come into power, but Uther doesn’t need to know that, and the sentiment remains.)
Uther gives Arthur one last gentle smile, before lowering his hands and straightening his posture, going from awkwardly doting father to detached mighty King within a second. He nods at each of them before turning and walking regally away, his cloak billowing behind him and his golden crown shining atop his head.
Arthur tilts his head in question and tugs Merlin’s hand slightly when he sees the small frown on the younger’s face:
“Merls? What did Otto do? He didn't hurt you, did he?!”
Merlin looked up at him in shock before blinking away the surprise and chuckling:
“Ah, no, nothing like that, just asked how a peasant ended up with such a magnificent soulmate.-”
Arthur looked like he wasn’t sure whether to be flattered or offended on Merlin’s behalf, so he settled for an odd mix of the two:
“-That didn’t bother me though, it was... Uther called me his boy.”
Arthur dropped his chin slightly in shock:
“He what?”
Merlin shrugged:
“He said “I must insist that you remove your hand from my boy”. It was very... disconcerting, and oddly endearing considering what he’d do if he knew what I was.”
He whispered the last part quietly, and Arthur raised his eyebrows in surprise before chuckling quietly:
“Wow, never thought I’d see the day. My father being protective of a commoner and telling me how proud he is all in one evening, perhaps the world is ending.”
Merlin snorts, rolling his eyes and softly responding:
“Hmm. He may be a bit of a prat, but he does love you, and he has his moments.”
Arthur narrows his eyes at Merlin good-naturedly, a smirk dangerously close to breaking out on his face:
“You know Merlin, you may be right, but you’re still the only person I allow to say it aloud without sanction.”
Merlin just smirks and raises an eyebrow; Arthur laughs, and the world feels right.
~
It was late by the time Arthur and Merlin finally decided to call it quits. Morgana, Gaius, and Hunith had left around an hour ago, Gwen following them the moment her shift ended. Technically, someone had come to take over from Leon about halfway through the night, but he stuck around, patrolling the shadows of the room with one eye on Merlin always.
(The boys had insisted that he should go home and relax, but were quietly grateful when he stayed.)
They had been wanting to leave for hours, and normally they could easily get away with such an absence, but this particular celebration was in their honour, it wouldn't do to leave too early, so they finally made their way out of the hall when the crowds had halved and it was approaching midnight.
Uther gave them one last pat on the back when they said goodbye, and the tension practically melted off them when they stepped foot outside, despite the freezing temperatures of winter in the dead of night.
Leon stepped out just a moment after them, and the three of them make quick work of the journey to the house, not wanting to dally in the frigid air and just a little desperate to find themselves in the comforting presence on the family they had built.
They arrive just in time to find Hunith pouring out mugs of hot chocolate (a luxury that Merlin and Hunith never had in Ealdor), and Gwen adding another log to the fire. The next round of hugs was quicker than the last; everyone was tired and eager to settle down, to push the insensitive questions to the back of their minds and revel in the positive feeling of things moving forward.
Arthur had removed his cloak immediately upon entry, folding it precisely and leaving it on the table in the hall, his golden circlet following shortly after, cushioned by the soft fabric, but Merlin excused himself to their bedroom, changing into comfier clothes and washing his face. He had been looking forward to leaving all night, but now that he was home, he found all he wanted to do was collapse in bed and sleep, Arthur securely in his arms.
A knock at the door broke him out of his slow moving thoughts, and he frowned slightly, Arthur wouldn’t knock:
“Come in.”
It was Leon that opened the door, having rid himself of his sword and most of his armour (a pain in the arse, considering he’ll have to wake up early to put it all on again, but oh well), and he stepped into the room, quietly shutting the door again behind him. Merlin sent him a tired smile, but Leon saw through it and raised an eyebrow:
“You alright, Birdy? Anyone in particular you’d like me to embarrass during training or council meetings?”
Merlin laughed and shook his head:
“No, that definitely won’t endear me to people. Honestly, it was a lot better than I was expecting, and having Arthur scowling at people and Uther defending me was rather entertaining in the end.”
Leon snorted, muttering a quietly amused “yeah, I bet” before stepping forward and enveloping Merlin in a tight hug, one hand on his back, one in his hair, holding him close. Merlin melted into the embrace, clutching the back of Leon’s tunic tightly as the older man swayed on his feet slightly, murmuring:
“I’m proud of you, little brother. You handled everything just fine, the kingdom loves you; you’re doing great.”
Merlin lets out a deep breath and steps back, though was grateful to feel Leon’s hands still on his shoulders as he replies:
“Thank you. Honestly, I’m just exhausted, I don’t know how I’m going to deal with this for the rest of my life, and I... I don’t want to disappoint Arthur.”
Leon rolled his eyes good-naturedly and ruffled Merlin’s hair:
“You could never. He loves you more than anything in this world, Birdy, you’re made for each other, after all. He would abandon all of this in a heartbeat if he thought it would make you happy.”
Merlin frowns slightly, clenching his jaw:
“Yeah, I know, that’s what worries me. We’re meant to... bring about a golden age or whatever, and we can’t do that if we leave, but I’m not sure I’m going to be any good at the... politics, or the court manipulation or anything that comes with... with running a Kingdom. I know it’s a long way off but...-”
Leon nods in understanding and squeezes Merlin’s shoulder softly:
“You’ve got plenty of time to learn. And hey, if you want to stay away from the politics? Fine, Arthur and Morgana have plenty of expertise in that area. You’re a physician, Merls, not a courtier, and the kingdom already loves you, not because you’re a good politician or anything like that, but because you’re a good person, and you’re worth loving. Just keep being yourself and you’ll be absolutely fine. And besides, you’ll always have us lot to fall back on when you’re unsure; you’ll never be alone, little brother, I’ll make sure of it.”
Merlin nods and sniffles slightly at Leon’s words, giving him another tight hug. They step back into the hall, and Leon gives Merlin’s hand a gentle squeeze:
“Ready? I can tell them you headed to bed, if you just want some sleep?”
Merlin smiles and shakes his head, pulling Leon to the living room, where everyone is undoubtedly crowded around the fire surrounded by blankets and pillows.
~
From that day forth, Merlin’s life becomes a lot more... official.
He was officially given sword-fighting lessons by a few of the older knights, though thanks to the lessons Leon, Arthur, and Morgana had given him already, he held his own pretty well, and they were more than impressed with the skill level of someone they had assumed was a complete beginner.
He was officially invited to the occasional council meeting (at least the boring, everyday ones). He was always a silent spectator, his participation discouraged, though his presence expected; Arthur always made a point to ask his opinions afterwards though.
His new duties and lessons, on top of his pre-existing duties as the Physician’s Apprentice, AND having to keep his magic hidden and his reputation intact, was all somewhat overwhelming for Merlin, but the steadfast support of Arthur and Morgana when it concerns politics, and Gaius talking Uther down when The King wants Merlin to be more involved in court life, definitely help him in everyday life. Gwen’s hugs and Leon’s hair ruffling are certainly God-sends as well.
The oddest thing was the way people addressed Merlin now. He wasn’t even of age yet, but people were calling him Lord, and servants bowed at him in the corridor. There wasn’t much he could do about the nobles without making some incredible social faux pas, but he always flushed at the servants and insisted they stop bowing and just call him Merlin, at least when no one else is around.
Thankfully, both visitors to the Kingdom and local nobles tone down the snootiness, especially when Uther publicly shows Merlin respect and rumours (correct rumours) spread of Arthur and Morgana’s protectiveness.
Merlin’s birthday was celebrated minimally, though there was, once again, a mix of feelings upon the realisation that he was now only one year away from being of age, and things would surely get even more intense when that happened. But they all tried to push it from their minds, at least for the time being.
As winter broke and the sun came up on what was undoubtedly a Spring day, Merlin felt the most refreshed he had in a long time, though his mood dropped instantly when he, Arthur, and Morgana were summoned to Uther’s private study... only to be given another mini, awkward “I’m proud of you” speech, and given a week off.
Of course, Arthur was still somewhat expected to keep up with his training at least a little, but really, there was nothing forcing him to.
They exited the study flushed with pride and excitement at the prospect of doing whatever the hell they wanted for a week, and met Gwen in the hall. She was worrying her lip between her teeth when they saw her, but she instantly relaxed and raised a questioning eyebrow when she saw the grins on their faces, and Morgana explained what had happened.
It was that evening, whilst relaxing in Arthur’s chambers, that Merlin heard the dreaded echo of “Emrys...” in his head.
He groaned, dropping his head in his hands, out of both frustration and the pain of another’s voice unexpectedly materializing on the inside of one’s skull.
It was just Arthur and Merlin in the room, and the Prince immediately moved from his own chair to kneel in front of his soulmate, running his hands up and down Merlin’s arms as he shakily asks:
“Merls? What’s wrong?”
Merlin just looks up at him blearily, one hand taking Arthur’s and the other rubbing his temple:
“Fucking... scaly arsehole.”
Arthur tenses and frowns as he answers:
“I thought he had given up months ago? Why is he calling you now?”
Merlin shrugs, slumping back in his seat:
“Who knows, he didn’t say, he just-”
“It’s important, bring your little... friends, if it makes you feel any better.”
“-never mind. He just said it’s important, and I can bring my “little friends” if I want.-”
He snorted in dry amusement before continuing:
“-as if I would’ve listened if he told me to go alone anyway. I really thought that me thinking “Fuck Off” as loud as I could helped him get the hint. Apparently not.”
Arthur rolled his eyes before looking to Merlin in concern:
“Well... do you want to go? Or do you want to just hope he goes away again?”
Merlin sighs, but before he can answer, the voice echoes once again:
“I will not go away this time, young Warlock. This is important, and I have very little else to entertain myself with, other than being an annoyance to you. Come.”
He huffs in frustration, standing abruptly and taking Arthur’s hand, dragging him to where their swords are kept as he grumbles:
“He’s not going away this time. Let’s fetch Leon and head down.”
Arthur dutifully follows, strapping his sword to his hip and locking the chamber doors behind them, not speaking until they were approaching Leon’s door:
“No Morgana or Gwen?”
Merlin halts, clenching his hands tightly as he thinks for a moment:
“Hmm. No, I don’t want to freak them out. We can tell them what happens later, but I don’t want Morgana to have to face him again.”
Arthur nods, and knocks quietly on Leon’s door. He opens quickly, and Arthur and Merlin are thankful that they didn’t wake him, though quickly notice his panic when he sees their grave faces and swords.
The explanation is quick, and within a few minutes the trio are making a stealthy journey down to the Dragon’s Lair. There are no dramatic appearances this time, the great lizard is already perched regally on the edge of the platform, waiting for them.
He tilts his head when he sees their tense forms at the gate:
“I’m grateful that you did not bring the Witch.”
Arthur and Leon look to Merlin in confusion as he bristles, tightening his grip on the sword at his hip as he speaks:
“Yeah, well, I didn’t fancy you trying to kill my best friend again. What do you want?”
The dragon does what the trio guesses is the closest to an eye roll and dramatic sigh that his great form can manage, before lowering his head and speaking in English:
“If you won’t listen to me, I suggest you use your new found, though temporary freedom to meet with the Druids. They have all relevant information on the prophecies, you can learn of your destinies from them. The closest camp is a day’s ride from the Eastern border of Camelot.”
Merlin raises an eyebrow, but Arthur beats him to it:
“And how would you know that? How did you know we had time off?”
The dragon tilts his head and huffs out a dry laugh, the hot air making the trio sweat under their thick cloaks (it may have been Spring, but it was still cold) :
“I know a great many things, young King.”
Merlin and Arthur can practically feel the way Leon tenses, even from a  few paces away. The man, ever the knight, was obviously incredibly uncomfortable with the idea that this dragon knew the goings on of the world, could listen in on conversations, all while being chained in the basement. Before either knight can say anything, Merlin tilts his head, a challenging look on his face as he regards the dragon:
“You... you keep saying destiny, but destiny is pre-written, the whole point is that it’s going to happen no matter what anyone involved does, no matter the interference. So why are you so desperate to have us know it, and work towards it? Us knowing or not knowing won’t alter things either way, unless it’s all a pile of shit and you’re manipulating us.”
Arthur smirks at Merlin’s quick mind and Leon looks impressed, the two of them turning their own challenging gazes on the rather thoughtful looking reptile. He mutters something along the lines of “you weren’t so bloody clever last time,” before lowering himself even closer to the ground, closer to Merlin:
“If I were manipulating you, then I wouldn’t send you to a third party known for being pacifist and unbiased, would I? Destiny isn’t completely certain, it is simply one of many likelihoods, the most... benefitting likelihood, is the destiny of you and your soulmate.”
Merlin scowls:
“Benefitting for who? Something tells me that one day you’re going to ask us for something, and we’ll be powerless to say no, thanks to all this... help you’re giving us, and it’ll be a mistake. So, benefitting who?”
The dragon shifts his jaw in such a way that resembles a smirk, speaking once again in the rasping language that Leon and Arthur don’t understand:
“Do you not want magic, yourself, your people, to be free, Emrys?”
He raises himself to his full height, stalking towards the ledge and stretching his leathery wings out. The trio manage to hold their ground in his dauntingly large presence, but their hands do tighten around their weapons:
“Go to the Druids, tell them Kilgharrah sent you.”
With that, he tips himself over the edge, falling for a second before snapping his wings out once again and shooting upwards towards the shadow-bathed ceiling, thick chain clanging loudly with the sudden movement.
Merlin huffs and turns to ascend the steps without another word, grumbling to himself about “stupid fucking dragons” and “my one week off and I have to deal with this shit” . Leon and Arthur look to each other with a shrug and a mix of genuine concern and mild amusement on their faces, before hurriedly following Merlin back through the castle.
~
Thankfully, it took almost no effort for Arthur and Morgana to get Uther to allow them to leave the Kingdom on their little vacation. It being under the guise of “visiting Ealdor” meant that it was perfectly within the realm of reasonable requests to have Leon tag along as “protection” as well. Guinevere was coming because they of course would need a servant whilst they were out and about (though Uther was definitely beginning to suspect that something more was at play between Morgana and the serving girl).
Unfortunately, Hunith was unable to get the week off work at such short notice (mother of the Prince’s soulmate or not), and there was no way they’d be able to justify asking The King for Gaius to tag along, so they didn’t even try. But they set out the next afternoon, having filled Gwen and Morgana in on Kilgharrah’s rather vague and annoying directions.
Neither of them were particularly happy that they had gone to see the Dragon without them or that they were just... doing what he said, but destiny or no, consulting the Druids on Morgana’s visions and Merlin’s magic was still a good idea, and they’d never get a better chance.
Just like Kilgharrah said, they found the Druid camp two days into their journey from the city, almost a day’s ride beyond Camelot’s border. They had to be careful, wear disguises, but they were travelling through virtually untouched wood so they didn’t run into anyone, not even a pesky group of bandits made an appearance.
When the first tents came into sight through the trees, the group stopped to take a breath and prepare themselves, giving each other one last round of dubious looks before beginning to walk again.
They barely make it to their third step when Merlin pauses and takes a stuttering breath, clenching his fingers around Arthur’s sleeve in a white-knuckled grip. The others crowd around him worriedly, but relax (only slightly) when he looks more confused than anything else. Before they can ask what’s wrong, he peers between them towards the tents:
“Uh... how are you- are you Druid? Is this one of you?”
Arthur’s eyes widen as he realises:
“Someone’s in your head again?”
Merlin nods distractedly but doesn’t move his gaze, speaking louder:
“Hello??”
Finally, a middle-aged man steps out from the camp; he wears floor length, dark green robes, and his silver hair almost falls to his shoulders. He gives the group a kind smile before finally focusing in on Arthur and Merlin, bowing his head slightly:
“My Lords. Our seers saw you coming some days ago, and we felt your presence the moment you entered our wood, Emrys.”
Merlin clenches his jaw slightly:
“Please don’t call me that, my name is Merlin... and... Kilgharrah sent us?”
He says it as if it’s a question and the Druid gives Merlin an assessing gaze, before nodding slightly. Before he can verbally respond, Leon steps subtly in front of the others. Morgana rolls her eyes at his protectiveness and Arthur huffs, but before they can challenge him, he asks:
“What do you mean, you felt his presence?”
He tilts his head again and smiles slightly, as though amused:
“Em- Merlin is rather powerful; we can sense him from miles away, his magic is incredibly... distinctive.”
Merlin frowns, holding Arthur’s hand protectively in his own as he side-steps Leon:
“What does that even mean? I’m not that powerful.”
The man shakes his head slightly and gestures behind him:
“Come. I imagine you have many questions about many things. The camp awaits your presence, My Lord.”
Merlin frowns at the title, but the Druid turns his back and begins walking back into the centre of the camp before he can challenge it. He gives a small shrug and a quiet “well, here we go” to the others before following his trail, Arthur’s hand still clutched tightly in his.
They all receive peculiar looks as they walk through the camp. Life seems to stop as everyone pauses what they’re doing to stare at the intruding teenagers (and Leon), but they keep their heads down, all letting out a relieved sigh when the man leads them to a tent, gesturing for them to sit around a table, and closing the fabric gently behind him.
He turns around with relaxed shoulders and an easy smile, not acknowledging that none of them are sat down and are instead gathered in a huddle by the table:
“My name is Iseldir. Druids don’t have strict hierarchies, but I’m considered the chieftain here, welcome.”
He looks at Merlin as he speaks, and the young Warlock nods slightly. He opens his mouth to speak, but shuts it again with furrowed brows; Iseldir raises an eyebrow and Merlin hums thoughtfully before trying again:
“I was going to introduce everyone, but something tells me that you already know who we are.”
Iseldir smiles again and nods, the expression on his face looking something similar to pride:
“Yes, I know who you all are. I see that you are learning to trust your instincts, My Lord.”
Merlin grimaces:
“It’s just Merlin, please. It’s bad enough that everyone at the castle calls me Lord now, I’m not even of age yet.”
The Chieftain’s smile widens in amusement as he nods, and Morgana is the next to speak up, her hand clutched tightly in Gwen’s as her voice shakes only slightly:
“We were sent here to learn about our... destinies?”
Iseldir nods, politely ignoring the way Merlin reaches behind him to grab Morgana’s wrist comfortingly, and how Leon and Arthur rest their hands near their swords:
“I have everything we need laid out here; it isn’t too complicated and we should get through all of it by this evening.”
The teenagers finally move to the seats, but make no effort to hide the way they shuffle the furniture to be sat closer together. Morgana and Merlin are sat in the middle, Arthur and Gwen flanking them protectively; Leon remains standing, a hand on each of his magical kid’s shoulders and a blank, though slightly challenging look on his face. Iseldir raises an eyebrow, but doesn’t comment, moving to sit on the opposite side of the table and shuffling a few papers around before looking up with a smile:
“Let us begin.”
~
The general mood of the room could be judged accurately by how tense Leon was at any one moment. Though he remained standing, he was relaxed and curious when Iseldir told them about the extent of Merlin’s powers (which Merlin looked incredibly dubious at), and he smiled proudly when they were told of Merlin and Arthur’s intertwined destinies (the nature of their soul-bond means he already knew they had some sort of great future, and this only proved it).
It was when Iseldir hesitated slightly as he gave Morgana a pitying look that Leon tensed up, and tightened his grip on her shoulder.
“You must all remember that destinies are... tricky. They are incredibly difficult to avoid, but it isn’t impossible; the future is not set in stone.-”
Morgana takes a deep breath and straightens her back, taking Merlin’s hand in her own and settling her face into a determined grimace:
“Just come out with it. Just tell me.”
Iseldir gives her a comforting smile as he nods, turning a sheet of incredibly ancient looking paper over and pushing it across the table towards them. On the scroll is a old, rough charcoal drawing of a woman with long, dark hair, her clothes somehow elegant and tatty at the same time. Her face is covered by a hood, but her arms are outstretched and violent looking flames extend from her hands, burning and destroying all the foliage drawn around the edge of the paper.
Morgana reaches a shaking hand out to touch the drawing but withdraws her hand before she makes contact, ignoring the tears gathering in her eyes as she looks up at Iseldir again:
“That’s me, isn’t it? Burning things?”
Iseldir nods slowly before speaking, his voice low and gentle, understanding:
“It is said that if you come into your full power, you will unite with The Once and Future King’s Bane. Your heart will freeze over, you will become consumed by hatred and fear and bitterness, and you will work tirelessly to bring about the downfall of Camelot, the downfall of Albion.-”
Arthur interrupts:
“Albion?”
Iseldir moves his gaze to the Prince, giving him a tight smile as he explains:
“The Kingdoms to be united under one name, Albion, with yourself as King.-”
He looks back to Morgana, his smiles turning just a little encouraging:
“-Like I said, the future is not set in stone. Arthur’s Bane came into existence several years ago, we’re keeping close watch on him; he has yet to show any... troubling, signs, nor have you.”
Merlin scowls slightly in though, before slowly saying:
“Arthur’s Bane is... a person?”
Iseldir raises an eyebrow and nods, letting out a breath of subtle relief when Merlin seems more genuinely worried than murderous.
Gwen is the next to speak up, her voice strong and her face determined:
“None of that is happening,-”
She reaches forward and aggressively turns the scroll over, squeezing Morgana’s hand as she continues:
“-not ever.”
Leon’s gasp has everyone’s eyes drawn to the overturned sheet, only to see a colourful image appear on the paper. The first figure to materialize is clearly Morgana, though in this drawing she is grinning, hood down, eyes golden and flowers in her hair. Next, Merlin and Gwen appear either side of her, Merlin’s eyes also glowing as he summons matching flowers in Gwen’s hair, Gwen who is pressing a kiss to Morgana’s cheek. Leon and Arthur appear next, in full armour with bright grins, a golden crown on Arthur’s head.
Iseldir chuckles, looking up at Merlin who is giving himself a satisfied nod as the golden glow fades from his eyes:
“Trusting your instincts indeed; you didn’t even need an incantation, very impressive.”
Merlin shrugs before turning to Morgana with a grin. She returns it with a shaky one of her own, once again feeling not-quite-so-scared thanks to the ever-comforting presence of her family.
~
They slept that night in a large tent that had been prepared for them, and were woken up early the next morning. They were given a proper tour of the camp and introduced to a few people.
Leon had questions about how the camp was run, in terms of enforcing rules and staying safe, so he was quickly introduced to a few of the elders. Whilst he had been reluctant to leave the others at first, Arthur’s teasing laughter and Morgana’s rolled eyes convinced him to spend the day away from them, learning about as much of Druid politics as he could.
Merlin and Morgana were quickly introduced to the strongest magic users, and whilst Merlin was taken aside to be given some lessons on healing using magic, Morgana was taught meditation techniques and breathing exercises by the camp’s most respected Seer.
Gwen sticks mostly with Merlin; whilst she had no magic to heal with, the herbal knowledge that was being shared was fascinating and she was eager to memorise as much of it as possible. She of course wandered over to check on Morgana occasionally, at first out of concern, but then out of pride, out of a desperation to never forget how relaxed and happy and at-home her soulmate looks.
Arthur spends the morning with Merlin, but quickly grows bored. Perhaps he should take more interest in healing considering how often he and the knights get injured, but he’s already got Merlin, Gaius, and now Gwen, so why waste the effort? Instead, he finds Morgana and the Seer. The sense of relief he feels to see his sister looking so at ease with such an easy smile gracing her face is almost overwhelming, but he doesn’t disturb them, sitting a little way away and silently watching them.
The Prince didn’t even realise he had fallen asleep until the tell-tale pop and the sudden shadow of someone stood above him jolts him from his nap. He opens his eyes blearily to see Merlin crouching next to him, an amused smile on his face and his hand out-stretched:
“Come on sleepy head, the others are waiting for us, it’s time to eat.”
Arthur takes a deep breath, allowing Merlin to pull him up before he stretches and rubs the sleep from his eyes. The sun was only an hour or so away from touching the horizon and he could see no one else in the little patch of woods Morgana had previously been sat in:
“Morgana?”
Merlin smiles softly, taking Arthur’s hand and leading him back towards the tents:
“Happy. She joined me a couple hours ago and we were practicing some simple spells, turns out she has more magic than just visions-”
At Arthur’s slightly affronted expression, Merlin chuckles and rolls his eyes:
“-You were exhausted, Arthur, don’t deny it. You got this holiday because of how hard you’ve been working, we didn’t want to wake you. We’ll show you a few tricks tomorrow alright?”
Arthur pouts and huffs slightly, fighting the smile trying to appear on his face as he nodded his agreement. Merlin just laughed at him again as they entered the meal tent, finding spaces with the other three.
~
The next morning was just as relaxed, though this time the five of them stayed together.
Leon, Arthur, and Gwen sat against a fallen log as they watched Merlin and Morgana show their magic off. A small audience of Druids had gathered as well, on account of Lord Emrys’ presence, and whilst Morgana tired quickly, not used to having such free access to the magic that had been inside her for years, Merlin could go for hours. He used few actual incantations, manipulating water and flowers and floating lights with just a little concentration and some imprecise waving of his hands.
Noon, unfortunately, came rather quickly, at which point Leon sighed and stood up, giving Merlin a sad smile before looking to Arthur:
“If we want to be home with a day to spare, we should start the journey soon.”
Arthur nodded in agreement and the rest of the group joins Leon in standing. The Druids disperse fairly quickly, but Iseldir stays with them, giving Merlin a pat on the back and a wide smile:
“It was a pleasure to have you here My Lor- Merlin.”
Merlin snorts in amusements but nods his appreciation, and the five of them wander over to their tent to gather their belongings whilst Iseldir collects the horses.
It’s only half a candle mark before they’re riding back out into the forest in the direction of Camelot. The teachers and elders, including Iseldir, wave them off with proud smiles, and whilst Merlin and Morgana are sad to leave this sanctuary behind, they were grateful for the freedom and safety and lessons they’d had, even if it was less than two days. Their utter faith that things would change when Arthur took the crown, that one day Camelot would feel just as safe, gave them something beautiful to look forward to as well.
Their journey home was just as uneventful as the journey out. When they finally pulled up into the courtyard with a day and a half of their free week left, Leon took everyone’s horses to the stable and informed a servant to tell the King of their arrival, whilst the others headed straight to Merlin and Hunith’s house. They had to wait for Hunith and Gaius to finish their actual jobs, but soon enough the whole group was crowded around the kitchen table.
Arthur and Gwen (who, though no one else would admit it, has the best memory of all of them) re-tell the prophecies and destinies.
Both Hunith and Gaius were furious once again at Morgana’s so-called destiny, but smiled proudly at her determined disposition, and the obviously magical drawing (the flowers seemed to move and the golden eyes definitely glowed off of the page) that Merlin pulled from his pocket. The others hadn’t even realised he’d kept it, but are grateful.
Next, Merlin and Morgana talk about their lessons. Gaius was intrigued by the healing knowledge Merlin and Gwen had gained, and after double checking that the door was locked and the curtains were drawn, they even showed off a few spells to their captive audience.
(There were times that Merlin showing off even the slightest bit of magic would give Hunith a heart attack and nightmares for days; she finds it doesn’t bother her so much anymore. She knows that Arthur, Morgana, Leon, and Gwen would never let anything happen to him, and the new stories of his apparent great power certainly helped ease her mind as well.)
Finally, Leon spoke about what he had learned from the elders; all bout how they keep camps running, their democracy, and how knowledge is preserved and passed on. It was a little boring, if any of them are being honest, but the bright grin on the knight’s face kept them from interrupting him.
Eventually, it came time for everyone to head to their respective beds and sleep. There was no denying that they’d had an amazing few days, but it was also a few days of constant activity and sleeping rough... they were all exhausted.
As Arthur and Merlin curled up under the covers, grateful for the slightly chilled night making cuddling easier, they let out simultaneous breaths of relief.
Arthur ran a hand through Merlin’s hair softly as he quietly spoke, aware of Hunith asleep in the next room:
“You think we’ll be alright?”
Merlin sighs and Arthur tries not to let the anxiety in his stomach swirl too violently at the lengthening silence. Finally, Merlin turns over to face his soulmate, shuffling even impossibly closer and giving Arthur a small smile. Arthur doesn’t comment on the nerves in the younger man’s eyes:
“There’s all this pressure on us to fulfil our destinies, to save the world, it’s a little... overwhelming. My whole childhood I tried to forget the fact that being Prince Arthur Pendragon’s magical soulmate would mean... everything, in one way or another, some day. And now that day is fast approaching, I can feel it, and I still have no clue what I’m doing. And that’s not even considering Morgana.-”
Arthur’s hold around Merlin tenses at the mention of his sister, and Merlin presses a soft kiss to the underside of his jaw before continuing:
“-I would give up all of it, everything, to save her. To see her happy. But... do I really have the right to make that decision? My people are counting on me, but you and Morgana and Leon and Gwen, you come first, and you always will.-”
Merlin rolls onto his back again, staring at the ceiling with furrowed brows as Arthur watches him mournfully:
“-I’ve spent so long being terrified of the fact that I know you would give up your crown if I just asked you to, and now I’m close to making the same decision myself; giving up everything for one person, to the detriment of the world.-”
He turns his head to face Arthur again, tears in his eyes:
“-I don’t know what to do, Arthur.”
The Prince clenches his jaw, having to push down the swell of anger at... everyone really. Kilgharrah, the Druids, the Gods, whosever idea this whole destiny shit was. Arthur often thought of himself as a fully matured adult whose place in the world was clear, but at times like these, he’s reminded of how young he is, and how Merlin is even younger.
He pulls the Warlock into a tight embrace, tucking his dark hair under his chin and running a soft hand over his back:
“I will stand by you, always, and we’ll figure it out, we always do. The future is fluid, Merls, we just have to keep an open mind and push through. We’ve all been through a little bit of hell, but that day? That you can feel approaching? That’s the day we change the world. I’ll force my father from the throne if that’s what it takes,-”
Arthur feels Merlin tense to argue, but rushes on before he can say anything:
“-not just for you, but because it will be the right thing to do, one day. This Kingdom, and then the world, will be golden, and the five of us, and Gaius and your mum, will be together every single step of the way. Ok? You don’t have to do anything, Merlin, not alone, not ever.”
Merlin relaxes again, and Arthur can feel his sigh of relief across his collarbones. The room goes silent for a while, and Arthur only just hears Merlin’s quiet words before he slips into a sleep filled with peaceful dreams full of meadows and flower crowns and golden eyes:
“Yeah... I think we’ll be alright.”
~
THE END!!
After thinking about it for a few days, and re-reading the series, I’ve decided that I actually like the ending here!
I hope y’all enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it, thanks anon for sending the idea to me all those months ago! :)

——————————————————————
“P-please? Just this once?’ Yachi begs, fingers gripping your sleeve like a vice.
You’re sorely tempted to refuse her ridiculous request, but you can’t bring yourself to. This is Yachi Hitoka, your best friend, though currently she’s a nervous wreck fretting over her first date with Yamaguchi Tadashi. The sweet, freckled Hufflepuff chaser has finally worked up the courage to act on his painfully obvious crush on Yachi - both veritable balls of sunshine, so sweet and anxious and caring that you can’t imagine a better match.
So you don’t understand why on earth you’re being asked to tag along on a double date with one Tsukkishima Kei.
It’s not that you dislike the guy – far from it. You’ve had a crush on him yourself ever since Yachi started hanging around Yamaguchi in your third year, sucking you and Tsukkishima have been sucked into their orbit, reluctant moons revolving around twin suns. But you’ve tucked it away since Tsukkishima doesn’t seem to have an interest in anyone at all – in fact, half the time his snarky replies and cold silences make you think he barely tolerates Yamaguchi as a friend, let alone yourself.
Still, refusing Yachi is tantamount to kicking an injured puppy, so you swallow your reservations and agree.
‘Thank you!’ Yachi cheers. ‘We’ll have fun, I promise!’
-----------------------------------------
It’s summer, and your blouse is sticking to your back as you dash through Diagon Alley. Tsukkishima and Yamaguchi are already waiting in front of Flourish & Botts, the former barely even granting you a nod, though he does give you the courtesy of removing his headphones, while Yamaguchi bounces on the balls of his feet to greet you cheerfully.
‘Woah there Yamaguchi – keep your enthusiasm for your date’, you joke, and he grins back at you.  And he does – stuttering and blushing as Yachi arrives. Yachi herself is no better – you swear you can hear her teeth chatter as she greets all of you, though she beams when Yamaguchi presents her with a small posy of flowers with clammy hands.
‘They’re cute’, you remark to Tsukkishima as you walk beside him on the way to the first stop -  Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour.
‘Mm’, he responds, his face blank.
You know he doesn’t suffer fools – worse still, talkative ones, so you fall silent until you reach the ice cream store. To your surprise, he pulls the chair out for you, and accepts your offer to share a cup of ice cream with you, a tilt to his lips when you automatically order a strawberry shortcake sundae – it’s his favourite after all.
Yachi and Yamaguchi seem to have gotten over their initial shyness, chatting up a storm in their own little world. You’re excluded, as you expected, but you’re glad for their sakes.
‘Excited about the last year of school?’
You glance up from your melting sundae, surprised that Tsukkishima is the first to break and initiate a conversation. From your interactions with him, he’s deliberate and methodical in his thoughts and words, so you take a few beats to formulate a response.
‘Yes and no, really’, you answer honestly.
He raises a thin blonde eyebrow, wordlessly beckoning you to elaborate.
‘I’m excited for our classes, the syllabus seems really interesting this year’, you say, wincing at how desperately nerdy you sound – but you’re a hopeless Ravenclaw, and advanced Arithmancy and Astronomy excites you. ‘But it’s scary isn’t it – knowing that it’s our last year, and having to make all those important decisions that are going to affect us, years down the road?’
He hums thoughtfully. ‘I get that’, he responds, hands steepled under his chin. ‘I’m deciding between doing further studies in magical history and going pro – just for a few more years. But I know no matter what decision I end up making, I’ll probably end up second guessing myself’.
‘Why can’t you do both?’ you find yourself saying before you can stop yourself. His brow furrows a notch. ‘You’re great at both, and I can’t see why you can’t as long as you put your mind to it’.
You cringe at your cheesiness, expecting him to snark at you for your Hufflepuff-like optimism the way he does with Yamaguchi, but you’re surprised once again when he mutters a quiet ‘thanks’, a flush high in his cheeks, and then asks -  ‘And what about you?’
You wonder if he’s merely being polite, but his tone is serious, and his eyes are intently focused on you, so you tell him about your plans of taking on further studies in Arithmancy, perhaps even enroll in a Muggle university to study Mathematics for a semester or two, before working in Gringotts. The goblins may be archaic in their beliefs about the magical world, but their application of mathematics is extremely advanced.
‘It suits you’, he comments. You want to ask him what he means by that, but Yachi pipes up from across the table.
‘If you’re done with your ice cream, do you guys want to check out the magical menagerie? Yamaguchi’s going to get a cat!’
Before you can agree, Tsukkishima tells Yachi and Yamaguchi to go on ahead, drolly reminding them that they’re on a date, and they should go spend some quality time together. So they head off with wide smiles, shoulders bumping. They’re so sweet together it almost makes your teeth ache. Well, at least you’ve been dismissed as their reluctant chaperone, and you’re about to wish Tsukkishima a polite farewell when he taps your shoulder.
‘Let’s go check out Flourish & Botts. I’m sure you have books you want to check out’.
You blink – because you do, but you don’t expect Tsukkishima to accompany you, let alone be the one seeking out your company. He doesn’t even wait for your assent before he sets off, and you have to jog to keep up with the pace his long legs set. Thankfully, he notices you’re still lagging behind and slows down, though he teases dryly – ‘you know, at the rate you’re walking, I’m not sure we’ll get there before sundown’.
You pointedly look up at the sun, still high in the sky, before levelling an unimpressed glare at him. He only smirks in response – and you’re so flustered by how attractive his expression is that you nearly trip over the threshold to Flourish & Botts. He catches you with a steady hand to your elbow – and now your heart is fluttering – is this how Yachi is like all the time? If so, you should really cut her some slack – the thoughts crowding your mind so distracting that you hardly hear Tsukkishima call your name in concern until he shakes your shoulder gently.
‘Are you alright?’ Tsukkishima repeats, with a frown.
‘Y-yes’, you reply, cursing your traitorous heart again. He doesn’t look like he believes you, insistently pushing you towards an empty couch.
He clicks his tongue. ‘Don’t move’ he orders, before he disappears, probably to get the books he has his eyes on.
You sink into the cushions, resisting the urge to bury your face in your hands in embarrassment. An hour spent in his presence and you’ve already turned back into a lovesick fool. You’ve told yourself countless times to just get over your silly crush on him already because it’s not going to do you any good.
Yamaguchi’s complained to you and Yachi countless times about girls asking him if Tsukkishima is single, but you don’t see him taking an interest in anyone at all – spending all his time instead in the library and on the Quidditch pitch.
He’s the stone faced beater from Ravenclaw. People wonder sometimes if ice flows in his veins – but they don’t see the determined set of his jaw when he’s ploughing through homework and assignments because he knows he’s going to have to spend the whole day in training the next day, the glint of satisfaction in his eyes whenever he wins a match or scores a good grade, the patience he expends tutoring Yamaguchi (along with Hinata and Kageyama) in Ancient Runes –
Oh Merlin. You’re a hopeless case.
You jump when he returns and drops into a seat beside you.
‘Oi, what’s wrong with you’, he mutters a tad scornfully, though he drops the book you were eyeing onto your lap.
‘N-nothing. T-thanks!’ you answer, internally cursing yourself for even picking up Yachi’s speech patterns.
Get it together. You’re not a fool.
He hums, browsing his own book.
It’s pleasant spending an afternoon in a nook reading books. It’s not so pleasant when your heart palpitates every single time his knee grazes yours - and if you shift just a tiny bit to the left you’re pressing against his side and - oh
‘Are you sure you’re ok?’ he asks, frowning again, when he notices you’ve been reading the same page for the past fifteen minutes.
‘F-fine’, you stammer, warmth flooding your cheeks when he leans his face dangerously close to yours, bringing his palm to brush against your forehead.
‘Your temperature’s fine’, he mutters, but he doesn’t pull away – and oh gosh, you’re so close you can count every single lash on his eyes, your traitorous heart causing you to drown in the quiet concern in his eyes – and oh -
You’re not quite sure who makes the first move because your eyes flutter close, your nose bumps against his and you feel his chapped lips against yours for a split second before he pulls away.
You open your eyes.
Did that truly happen?
Judging from the blank expression on his face, the past few seconds were probably just a fever dream. But there are signs that cool, quiet Tsukkishima isn’t his usual self - a flush creeping up the back of his neck, his fingers gripping the pages of the book so tightly it starts to crinkle.
‘What was that?’ you blurt out, confused.
‘What was what?’ Though his voice remains calm and collected, his flush has traveled all the way to the very tips of his ears.
‘Nothing’, you answer, dropping your eyes back to the open book on your lap, your mind in a whirl. Surely you didn’t imagine that, right? Did you just - did he just - wait, you’re confused again, what’s going on?
Your thoughts are interrupted by elegant, long fingers slotting between your own. ‘Silly’ he mutters, but there’s a fond twist to his lips and a softness in his eyes that you’ve never seen before.
‘I’m pretty sure I’m not the only silly one here’, you respond, in a sudden swell of confidence, though your pulse is sending tremors down your spine, your breath catching in your throat. ‘I’m pretty sure you’re the silly one too’. You curl your fingers over his and lean into his side.
He hums diffidently. ‘I guess it might seem that way’.
You both share a shy smile.
-----------------------------------------
Yachi is smug when you confess to her later that Tsukkishima - no - Kei asked you out as he walked you home that evening.
‘I told you that we’d have fun!’, she says, grinning cheek to cheek. Then she starts rambling on and on about future double dates with her and Yamaguchi in Madame Puddifoots, where you can share couple sundaes and steaming mugs of hot chocolate - wouldn’t that be wonderful?
You resist the urge to tell her that Kei has sworn off any future double dates - let alone at the white and pink lace bedazzled monstrosity of a cafe, and his suggestion of a quiet afternoon spent at his favourite bookshop cafe sounds far more inviting to you.
You’ll let Yamaguchi break the news to her later, on a more appropriate date.
Instead you just smile to yourself, thinking of the quiet affection in his voice as he wished you farewell, and the suppressed delight in his eyes when you called his name just as he was about to turn away and surprised him by pulling him down to you and pressing your lips to his cheek.
Yachi’s right. You did have fun after all.

I swear I have normal Narnia headcanons. However, none of them are featured in this post.
So! If you've been following my series of posts about my Inhuman Narnia AU and the couple of oneshots I posted on ao3 under ASkyOfKai, you've probably noticed that in this little universe I've created, Narnia is sort of...sentient. And I've just realized that I've only actually gone into depth about this on Discord with my friends who are probably very tired of hearing about it. So I'm making y'all suffer through it instead. Welcome to Inhuman Narnia 101, please take your seats because this is going to take a while.
Warning for religious themes, theological discussion, and some dark fantasy/inhuman/body horror concepts that involve blood and physical changes.
BEFORE I SAY ANYTHING: Please keep in mind that an AU is meant to be an alternate universe that may not follow canon information. If anything in this post contradicts canon on the creation of Narnia (it undoubtedly will), pay it no mind, this is an AU. It doesn't have to follow canon.
First off, a little explanation of the Inhuman Narnia AU in general. Basically I came up with this AU after seeing some other people on tumblr post about the Pevensies being not quite human after their time in Narnia. Just eerie, cryptid, a bit of dark fantasy kinda stuff. And I was like, "I'm in love, sign me up, I have ideas." I did not sit down and develop this all at once. The worldbuilding I've done for it has come slowly over the past few weeks through posts, fanfics, and discord rambles. The idea of Narnia being a sentient earth deity of sorts is a recent one and there is already so much to it. (Also I call her Narnia because it's convenient, she has other names but I haven't bothered to like, actually make any up so Narnia is what she's called.)
The most important thing to note starting off is that Narnia is not supposed to be a replacement for Aslan, nor is she necessarily "the hero to his villain". Aslan and I have an interesting relationship, as he is literally God/Jesus/The Holy Spirit/etc and I no longer really identify as Christian. While there are times that Aslan definitely takes a more antagonistic route in my writings, I don't actually see him as a bad guy, nor as a good guy. As God, he literally removed from our concepts of good and evil (in my opinion). The same goes for Narnia being an earth deity. I am a Christian-raised pagan, and I definitely subscribe to the idea that gods and deities are not subject to humanity and our rules. Narnia is not a good goddess, she is not a bad goddess, she simply is a goddess. Plain and simple. The dichotomy that exists between Narnia and Aslan in my writing is generally that of opposing deities, but this isn't a hard and fast rule. There were and still are times when they're friends, working towards the same goals. There are times when Narnia's power is stronger than Aslan's and times when Aslan's power is stronger than hers. There is no simple 1:1 comparison between them.
So, getting into motivations and why Narnia as a deity even exists. Essentially, I asked the question, "How do the Pevensies become inhuman?" and voila earth deity Narnia was born. Now, the basic in-universe mythology I've worked out is that Narnia and Aslan are two deities from separate dimensions that came together to create a new world, the world of Narnia. Aslan is the one who oversees things, he's the one who comes up with the ideas, and he's a little less attached to the world as a whole because he's a Creator, not an earth deity. Narnia is, however, and she literally makes up the world, she sort of runs the entire thing on a physical level, and she is much more attached to it. So she's always kinda taken on this role of making the things in her world the way she wants them. For the most part, she and Aslan designed everything together and they're both happy with it blah blah blah. Well, Aslan then decides to bring a few humans from this other world he's created to Narnia. And she affects them a bit (I've got headcanons about Digory and Polly that I haven't posted anywhere yet but I might soon), but it isn't until Aslan brings the Pevensies over that she really gets to experiment. See, there are other deities in the world that kinda rule over the various lands on a surface level (patron gods for Telmar, the Archenlands, etc, they just have less power than Narnia and Aslan) so she has a little less power over the people in those places, but the country of Narnia is both her land and her so when the Pevensies become the Kings and Queens and live there for 15 years, she's very connected to them. And it's through this connection that she starts to affect them. Honestly, I'm not sure if Narnia even knows what she's doing when she starts stripping away their humanity. I think it's that she can feel they're not from her world and she doesn't like that. She wants them to be a part of her, she wants them to belong in her world just the same as everyone else. (Side note—I know Telmar and some other lands in canon are based on people finding portals and coming through and I'd like to say that she does affect them a bit, takes away a bit of their humanity, but it's not to the same extent as the Kings and Queens of her lands).
"So Kai," you might say, "You keep empathizing that she is literally the land and the land is her. What the hell do you mean by that?" Well, essentially, she is...the...land. Basically if you've read Percy Jackson Heroes of Olympus, there's this idea that Gaia and Tartarus are both physically their domains and able to take on a smaller, human shaped physical form because they're gods and not restricted by human ideas of only having one body. Narnia is the same. Her physical form is both the entire world and whatever smaller shape she might appear in to people. However, we have to acknowledge that their world is differently structurally from ours. There's magic, there's talking animals, and in my Inhuman AU, there is a literal Heart of Narnia at the center. Like a physical, beating, human-shaped heart. Except it's a lot bigger than a regular human heart. Also it's golden. And many many many miles underground. So anyways this is where she's centered. It's basically where her soul is. Probably under Cair Paravel because I just came up with that idea and I love it. And radiating out from it are veins of magic and blood, and these stretch all across the world. Now here is where we get into blood magic and some of those fun terrifying concepts I've come up with.
Narnia has her own blood, of course, but also whenever one of her Kings or Queens bleeds in battle, she kinda pulls it down through the earth into her own heart and veins. It doesn't really do anything to her or them in particular, it's just a fun side effect of them having a patron pagan god. Yes this includes Caspian after he becomes King. Also Peter's blood turns golden because he's the High King, and then later Caspian's does too because I just really like imagery of Ben Barnes bleeding gold. (Side note—when Peter returns to England, his blood goes back to red, but it does remain a brighter red than blood generally is).
Diverting for half a second here. Now, in both my regular Narnia writings and my Inhuman AU, Lucy is very very connected to magic. In my regular Narnia fanfic, she studies with the druids, who are sort of like BBC Merlin's druids. They're just like, chill dudes who run around in camps doing magic and making prophecies and shit. However, in the Inhuman AU, they are a lot darker. One of my favorite ideas with the Inhuman druids and Lucy is that they are so connected to Narnia's magic and her Heart that their hands become stained with blood. Is it their blood, is it Narnia's blood, is it someone else's blood? Idk, don't ask questions. But yea, their hands are permanently stained reddish-brown to almost black. In my regular Narnia stuff, I still like the idea of Lucy's hands being stained and go with just earth magic, dirt stuff for the reason why. But yea no, in the Inhuman AU her hands are stained with blood because of blood magic.
So getting a bit more into how Narnia affects the Pevensies now because I love talking about this lol. She doesn't consciously chose how to change them, though she does call them her creations. Generally the way her magic affects them is by connecting them to to the land in some way and bringing out certain traits they have. So for Peter it's his eyes flickering between regular blue and the amber of a lion's, feathers appearing on his back that grow into wings, having a strength greater than that of a giant's. His blood is golden and on clear nights, the Aurora Borealis in the sky is reflected across his skin. For Susan, her skin glints like glass in the sun and she can briefly glimpse the future. Her wounds are sewn shut with golden rays of light, her eyes are cracked but clear, and she seems to glow faintly in the night, a bit of the sun's radiance shining through her. Edmund has a bit of a star's power lodged in his throat, and can manipulate words, uses them to influence people and their actions. His skin is frostbitten in places, a side effect of ruling the Woods where the White Witch once held so much power, and in some spots his bones shine under the ice that spreads across his skin. Lucy has the stained skin from her stronger connection to magic, and when she speaks words from the Old Language (the one Aslan and Narnia used to shape the world itself), her voice echoes and rasps. Her teeth are too sharp, her smile too wide, and when she disappears underwater, she can stay for hours without surfacing. I want to get into Eustace and Caspian now too but this post is already extremely long and I've still got a bit to cover, so we're just sticking with the Pevensies for now. So yea, Narnia doesn't pick what she does to the Pevensies, she just connects herself to them and through that connection, they change. The magic that she is made of, that Narnia the world operates on, that's what changes them. However, as I stated already, she does call them her creations and feels extremely responsible for them.
Wrapping back around up to the beginning, this is the biggest source of conflict between her and Aslan as of the canon timeline. I like to believe that the lamppost incident was an accident, that Aslan didn't actually mean to send them back at the end of LWW and it was pure coincidence, wrong place wrong time stuff. That being said, it did happen and Narnia really didn't like it happening. The Pevensies did return to their (mostly) human selves in this AU in England, so when they came back in Prince Caspian, she felt disconnected from them again. She reacted to this by digging into them even harder on a spiritual level and essentially speedran them back to being inhuman throughout the timeline of PC, which generally takes place over a few months in my mind. I don't remember how long it was in the book, it's been quite a while since I read them, but it's only like a week in the movie and like eff that, overthrowing a kingdom takes a bit longer in my opinion. Now there are a few divergences here. 1. They all stay at the end of PC and yea that's it, they go back to being Kings and Queens and it's like a second Golden Age but with Caspian there as well. 2. Susan and Peter stay, Lucy and Edmund go back and it's a repeat of the human/inhumanity cycle for them + Eustace in VOTDT and then they stay. 3. Everything happens exactly as it does in canon and it's a constant cycle of humanity/inhumanity with the character's various trips and finally ends at The Last Battle. I like all versions and I tend to leave things a little open to the reader on what exactly happens, or I would if I could actually finish some of my drafts and post them. As you can imagine, Narnia likes 1 the best and 3 the least. She really wants her Kings and Queens to stay and rule her lands and like be awesome and stuff. However, Aslan prefers 3 the best and 1 the least. So again, neither of them is really good nor evil, they just have differing opinions on how the world should be run and what the Pevensie's fates should be. I do tend to side with Narnia, I really like exploring these concepts of inhumanity, but I also really like the concept of a cycle. That's very common in mythology.
So anyways, that's a bit of an overview on earth deity Narnia and her role in my Inhuman AU. If you made it this far, congratulations, and I give you explicit permission to use any of my ideas in your own writing/fanart/whatever, as long as you tag either my tumblr or my ao3 (lord-of-christmas-lights and ASkyOfKai) because I need more Narnia+Inhumanity content in my life. Thanks for reading all this and I'll probably be back very soon with elaboration on Eustace and Caspian's inhumanity!

Tumblr media
Halloween was never a holiday that interested you. At least that’s how it used to be…
Growing up with a non-magic family, the festivities had never seemed that interesting. You couldn’t figure out the appeal of a holiday dedicated to something you didn’t believe in. The ghosts, the ghouls, the whispers of magic on the air – it all appeared juvenile. Of course, you would buy the occasional pack of sweets for the school children that scurried around the neighbourhood, demanding treats on every doorstep. However, you never went out to celebrate yourself, uninterested in the costumes, the decorations, or the general air of mischief that circulated that that time of year. You had no rose-tinted nostalgia for the holiday, and no desire to dress up or carve Jack-o-lanterns.
All this changed when you met Jimin.
When you had first received your letter from Hogwarts, both you and your parents had been shocked. You had no idea up that magic even existed, and yet, there was the letter in your hands, screaming the contrary to all you believed. A well constructed prank? The look on your parents’ faces suggested otherwise. Your parents explained to you that magic truly did exist, and while they themselves were non-magical, one of your aunts was actually a witch, who had also attended Hogwarts in her youth.
With that revelation, your life flipped on its head.
After a summer spent pleading with your parents to let you go, you finally arrive at Hogwarts, filled with wonder at the new world you’ve uncovered, and amazed that your family were able to hide this from you for so long. Sorted into Slytherin, you find yourself surrounded by witches and wizards who are already familiar with this alien lifestyle – students who’ve been watching Quidditch matches since they were babbling babies, and who are already familiar with simple spells. New and alone, you find yourself  estranged from your peers.
That is, until your first Halloween at Hogwarts.
✽ ✽ ✽
[First Year – October 31st]
On the night of October the thirty first, the girls in your dormitory are preparing for the Halloween feast, with excited chatter, tying up their hair, putting on their robes, and admiring themselves in the mirror.
You sit on the edge of your bed in your robes, swinging your feet, and feeling out of place, like a pulled muscle. You’re unsure of the customs of witches and wizards, and are sweating at the thought of messing up tonight, doing something that will instantly single you out as muggle born. Nerves clamouring as you listen to two of the girls, Padma and Beatrix, whispering about all the possible treats you’ll be served that evening, all of which you’ve never even heard of before, you decide that waiting around in the dorm is just making you feel worse. You get up and walk out of the dormitory, heading to the common room. You were hoping to avoid the commotion, but soon realise your mistake, having only walked further into the confusion. A group of boys are huddled in the corner, helping each other with their ties, while a gaggle of girls giggle in the other corner, glancing at the older boys who walk past with robes billowing. Some prankster has set off a magical miniature firework which crackles dangerously close to the green tapestries hanging from the wall.
You swallow, feeling all the more daft as you watch, excluded, while the rest of your peers enjoy themselves.
“Hello.” Startled, you spin around to the source of the voice.
A boy stands in front of you. You recognise him to be Park Jimin from your potions class. You haven’t spoken to him at all, but have often noticed him – for his undeniably friendly demeanour and his distinctive laugh which always travels around the potions class, followed by the shout of “Park Jimin, and Kim Taehyung! What is so dreadfully funny that you deign it appropriate to interrupt our lesson?”
Unsure if Jimin is speaking to you, you glance around to see if there’s anyone else, and then, suddenly mute, point to yourself.
Jimin laughs. “Yes, I’m talking to you.”
“Oh… Uh, right… sorry. Hi.”
“I didn’t mean to spook you,” Jimin says, a smile playing on his lips at your lost expression, “You just looked a little lonely, so I thought I’d put you out of your misery.
He must have noticed the alarm passing across your features, as he quickly continues, “Oh, Merlin, that sounded like I was planning your assassination or something! I just meant, I wanted to talk to you, since I didn’t want you to be by yourself.”
You laugh, “Well, thank you. I must have looked pretty pathetic, huh?”
“No… well… maybe.”
You open your mouth in mock shock, and then shrug, “It must be super obvious I’m new to all of this.” You gesture to the robe you’re wearing, and clear your throat, lowering your voice, “I’m… from a muggle family.”
You know that wizards and witches from muggle families are a lot more happily accepted by the magical community than they used to be, but it is whispered that some Slytherins still cling to elitist ideals about pure blood magic wielders. You had been both surprised and nervous when you were sorted into Slytherin on your first day. Despite this, you feel at ease explaining to Jimin, who’s currently smiling at your with a friendly curiosity.
“Ah,” Jimin nods, “This must all be very strange for you then.”
“Yep. It wasn’t until my letter from Hogwarts that I even believed that magic was real!”
Jimin’s eyes go wide, “I can’t even imagine what that must be like.”
“On top of that,” you continue on, your barriers breaking down as you easily chat with Jimin, “My family were never really into anything that even hinted at magic or the supernatural, so we never celebrated Halloween!”
You didn’t think Jimin’s eyes could widen further, but he manages to surprise you. “You what?”
A blush rises to your cheeks, and your eyes dart to the floor, suddenly embarrassed. “Yeah… not once.”
“Well, not to worry,” Jimin says, “Look at it this way – this is going to be the best Halloween of your life.”
You can’t argue with that.
“You’re in for a treat,” Jimin assures you, and you grin.
Around you, the crowd of Slytherin students have begun to meander out of the common room. “It must be time for the feast to start,” Jimin is bouncing on his toes in excitement. Feeding off his energy, you cannot help but feel excited yourself, despite not knowing what to expect at all. You follow him down the maze of corridors that make up the old school, leading you towards the Great Hall.
Entering through the grand doors, your mouth involuntarily falls open. Carved pumpkins float above the tables, casting a delicate glow over the array of delicious treats on display. There are plates piled high with tender meats, savoury pies and glazed vegetables. Sweets of all varieties sit in carved pumpkin bows, overflowing with colour.
You follow Jimin to the Slytherin table, where he offers for you to sit next to him. Across from you, at the Hufflepuff table, Jimin’s friend, Taehyung, waves at the two of you frantically.
Jimin grins and waves back, before turning his attention to you. “Well? First impressions?”
“This is all so amazing,” you gush, still transfixed by the wonderful foods piled in front of you. A mixture of delicious scents sing in your nostrils.
You wait patiently while the headmaster rumbles through his speech, welcoming each and every one of you to the feast. You’re salivating when you are finally allowed to start on the food. Despite knowing you should start with the savoury food first, your eyes are drawn, irresistibly, to the sweets. You reach for a handful of jellybeans from one one the plates in front of you.  Just as you stuff a handful into your mouth, JImin catches sight of you and begins shaking his head vigorously in warning.
Too late. A cacophony of foul tastes hit your tongue. You’re not sure what you’re supposed to be tasting, but it is not good. Eyes watering, you try not to gag.
“Here, here!” Jimin hands you a napkin, and you discreetly spit out the barely chewed mouthful, folding the napkin over a few times, hiding your faux pax in shame.
“What on God’s green earth was that?” you ask, hurrying to take a sip of water.
“Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans,” Jimin explains , “They’re well known, but I guess you haven't grown up with wizard snacks… Basically, eating one is  a gamble. You could get a delicious one. Or you could get an absolutely disgusting flavour. They’re made to cover any possible flavour under the sun. Some of the worst include skunk’s spray and vomit.”
“So that’s what that was...” You try not to think of it, despite the ghost of bitterness haunting your tongue.
Jimin chuckles, “I thought you were being incredibly brave eating so many all at once…”
“I’m new to all of this,” you remind him. Having regained your composure somewhat, you give him a nudge, “I dare you to taste one too. Just so I’m not alone in making a complete fool of myself.”
Jimin grins, “Okay, I’m up for a dare.” He roots around in the bowl, picking out a red one, which he pops in his mouth. “Mmm… cherry.”
You frown, “That’s cheating. You must have known red would be good!” You pick up a red one yourself and place it on your tongue, only to have the disgusting taste of liver clamber across your taste buds. You don’t need to tell Jimin how disgusting this bean is. Your face says it all, as Jimin begins laughing. You begin searching for the napkin again, but Jimin says, “No, no, you’ve committed. You gotta swallow now.”
You open your eyes wide, begging, but he continues, “I dare you.”
Your brows furrowing in effort; it takes all your strength not to retch as you swallow. “That’s not fair,” you say, “How come I got so unlucky?”
Jimin shrugs, “There’s about a fifty percent chance you’ll get something nice.”
You cross your arms on the table, “I still think you must have cheated somehow.”
“How about you try something tasty instead?” Jimin gestures to the other nice looking foods in front of you.
Your brow crinkles, “How am I supposed to know there aren’t other weird foods you wizards eat?”
Jimin begins spooning things onto your plate, “Don’t worry, these are all good. Cross my heart.”
You watch him pile foods higher and higher until you beg, ‘Stop, there’s no way I can eat that much!”
“Sure, but you gotta at least try a little bit of everything,” Jimin encourages, so you pick up a fork and make your way around the plate, sampling every flavour. You start with the meats, which are just as tender as they look. The chicken melts in your mouth, and the gammon is sweet and salty in the best possible way. The vegetables come next. You’ve never been a big fan of vegetables, but these could make you rethink that stance. The carrots are sweet, glazed with a honey dressing, and the parsnips are well seasoned. But the main stars of the show are the desserts. A myriad of flavours hit your senses, each one more delicious than the last. Sweet spices, creamy caramels, and smooth frostings all harmonising a ballad on your tongue, making you squirm in your seat with joy.
“Are they good?” Jimin asks, and you nod enthusiastically, mouth still full. “What’s your favourite?”
You point at one of the pastries as you swallow the last bite, “It’s all good, but I think this one is the best.
“Mmm, apple and redcurrant tart,” Jimin nods in approval, “That one’s good.”
There’s still so much food piled on your plate, but you’re too full to take another bite. You lean back, and sigh contentedly, gazing up at the starry sky that spreads out above you, stars winking down.
“I may be new to Halloween, but I could certainly get used to this,” you say.
“We’ll just have to try and make next year all the more exciting then,” Jimin says, and you give him a grin.
“Challenge accepted.”
✽ ✽ ✽
[Second Year – October 28th]
“We’ve got to make this Halloween better than the last year!”
Jimin is sat cross legged under a crooked tree, leaves just staring to turn orange and gold. You’re standing next to him, well wrapped up, not enjoying the cold that autumn brings with it, as you stamp your numb feet and rub your frozen hands together.
“Oh yeah,” Taehyung grins up at you from his spot next to Jimin, “You don’t normally celebrate Halloween, do you?”
You shake your head, at him, and his grin grows all the wider, and all the more rectangular.
“How do we top last year?” Jimin wonders, while Taehyung struggles with opening a chocolate frog pack.
“You don’t have to try and top it,” you say, finally taking a seat next to Jimin, and immediately regretting it as cold seeps into your rear. You pull your cloak around you. “Last year was fun. And next year can be fun too...”
“We could throw a party!” Taehyung burst out, interrupting you.
“Would we even be able to host one?” you ask.
Jimin’s brows are furrowed in thought. “That could be a good idea,” he says, and Taehyung smiles in pride, as he finally gets the chocolate frog pack open, only to watch as the chocolate frog hops away, finally freed from its cardboard cage.
“No, come back,” Taehyung digs in his pocket for his wand, but It’s already too late, the frog has hopped into the bushes, out of sight. Taehyung sighs, then digs in the pack for the card. “Hmm, Salazar Slytherin,” he says, staring at the card inside, “I already have him.”
“I don’t,” Jimin pipes up, “I’ll trade you the rest of my sherbet lemons for him.”
Taehyung nods, and you watch the two boys exchange, wondering what all the fuss is about. Jimin shows you the card, where a man poses proudly. You’ve got used to seeing pictures that move on paper, but you’re still always mildly impressed.
“You’re still missing the important detail that we don’t have anywhere to host a party,” you point out, and Taehyung shrugs, as he pops a sherbet lemon in his mouth:
“We can just use a common room. The Hufflepuff common room is close to the kitchen, and you don’t need a password or anything to get in. I bet I could get some of my Hufflepuff friends to help set up.”
“When would we do this?” you ask, giving in reluctantly to Taehyung’s infectious excitement.
“We can do it after the Halloween feast,” Taehyung suggests, and Jimin nods in agreement.
“This sounds great,” he says, glancing at you in anticipation, “What do you say?”
“I’m in.”
The two boys cheer.

[Second Year – October 31st]
The next few days pass in a flurry, with Jimin and Taehyung passing notes around the classrooms, letting other students know of your plans. As only students from their respective houses are normally allowed in their house common room,  each student is told to keep the plans a secret from the professors.
As the evening finally arrives, Jimin is a ball of energy, struggling to contain his smile, as you walk down to the Great Hall for the feast.
All the way through the feast, you can’t help but think about what’s to follow, excited about the party that is in store later.
As soon as the feast ends, you follow Jimim along with the few other Slytherins who are going o the party, walking with the rest of the Slytherins, heading back towards the Slytherin common room. At one of the turnings on the way, you and Jimin make a left off the normal route, and begin to make your way back, following stairs down to the basement where the Hufflepuff common room is located. Reaching the door, you give the secret knock you had arranged with Taehyung beforehand.
His head pops around the door, a conspiring grin on his face as he lets you in. The Hufflepuff common room is round, with circular windows close to the ceiling which give a view of the darkness outside. House plants line the shelves of the room, some dripping their leaves down the earthy walls. Taehyung and his friends have added orange and gold streamers, with carved Jack-o-lanterns grinning from the alcoves and crevices.
“Ta-da,” Taehyung spreads out his arms, spinning around to show off his – and his friends’ – hard efforts.
“This is amazing, Taehyung,” you tell him, and he gives a wide smile:
“There’s more, come take a look at this!”
You let him lead you and Jimin over to a table stacked high with sweets. “I managed to scrounge these from the kitchens.” He gives a wink, “This is why it’s good to be friendly with the cooks. Hope you saved room.”
You hadn’t saved much, and you eye the sweets sadly, afraid that any more food would make you pop. There’s even apple and redcurrant tart. You cast it a wistful look, before letting yourself be distracted by Jimin and Taehyung.
Slowly, other students begin to trickle into the common room, some of them older students, most in the same year as you. Music begins to float from a corner of the room, and so, you grab Taehyung and Jimin, lading them to the centre of the room, where a few other students have started dancing.
Swaying in time with the music, you laugh as Taehyung and Jimin goof around in front of you, clapping along to the beat. The air is filled with happy chatter. You drink in the atmosphere, swept along by the other’s enthusiasm.
Taehyung notices a few of his friends from Hufflepuff and waves, before going over to say, “Hello”, leaving you alone with Jimin on the makeshift dance-floor.
You suddenly feel a little awkward, dancing alone with Jimin. You keep on swaying, smiling over at him every so often. His eyes are often on the floor, his dancing slowing to a gentle sway, but occasionally his eyes connect with yours before flicking down to the floor again.  Perhaps he’s feeling just as awkward as you are.
All of a sudden, there’s a shout, and the music cuts out. You halt, Jimin frozen at your side, while the other students twist their heads, looking around, trying to figure out what’s going on.
“What is the meaning of this?” Above the other heads of the students, you can just about make out the head of one of the tall Hufflepuff prefects. “You do realise that there are some students who are trying to sleep after the feast, right?” He strides forward, the other students parting in waves before him. “I think I see some non-Hufflepuff students here as well,” he comments as he passes by you. You pull your cloak around you, trying the mask the Slytherin colours on your jumper. “I have half a mind to report everyone in this room to the headmaster.”
“Aw come on,” one of the other prefects, a boy you recognise as Jung Hoseok follows behind his peer, “These kids are just having fun,” he places an arm on the other prefects shoulder. “Let’s just say it was a mistake – a learning experience – and move on. I’m sure it won’t happen again.” He gives a wink to Taehyung, who’s stood across from you, trying to look guilty.
“Alright,” the prefect snaps, “But if I hear even a single whiff of another party being held in this common room, I will march each and every pupil responsible down to the headmaster’s office myself, mark my words.”
With that, the party disperses – very quickly. Streamers are swept away with the flicking of wands, and the candles in the Jack-o'-lanterns instantaneously snuff out.
Grabbing Jimin by the sleeve, you both make a bee-line for the exit, giving Taehyung a reluctant wave as you leave.
“Well, that wasn’t as successful as I hoped,” Jimin whispers, as you make your way down the corridor, heading back towards the Slytherin dorms.
“Maybe not,” you say, “But it was fun. Did you see that prefect’s face? I thought he was going to explode with rage.”
Jimin snorts with laughter. “Sorry it wasn’t the best of Halloween experiences.”
“What do you mean?” you say, “It’s gotta be one of the best. At least top-three.”
“You haven’t even celebrated three Halloweens yet!”
“Exactly. So it’s been one of the best.”
“Well, we’ll just have to top it again next year.” Jimin decides.
✽ ✽ ✽
[Third Year – October 28th]
Moving into your third year you find yourself gifted with a little more freedom around the school. It’s the year that you’re allowed to visit Hogsmeade, and you’re an uncontainable ball of energy when the weekend closest to Halloween rolls around, marking the first date that the third years are allowed to make their way down to the all-wizarding village.
On the Saturday, you and Jimin meet up with Taehyung on the steps outside Hogwarts, and make your way down to the village.  All the way JImin is talking excitedly about how he’s planning on one-upping the Halloween festivities from last year.
“We can’t have another part  like last year,” Taehyung says, “No way am I willing to get us all in trouble again.”
“I know,” Jimin sighs, “But we’ve gotta do something exciting, right?”
The topic of Halloween soon fades away as you finally reach Hogsmeade. The village street is blanketed by leaves in red and orange, with cheery lights shining from the windows of shops, giving a cosy contrast to the drab autumnal sky.
“Where do we go first?” Taehyung asks, and you and Jimin share a look, before you both point to the sweets shop, Honeydukes.
“Do you guys think about anything other than your stomachs?” Taehyung asks, following after you, as you rush for the cosy looking shop, nestled under a crown of fallen leaves that adorn its low roof. Your eyes widen as you enter, drinking in the view of the magical sweets packed in jars from floor to ceiling. You pick out sherbet lemons, Jimin’s favourite, and he buys a packet of apple and redcurrant tarts from the pastry display. He shares the still warm pastries with you as you exit back into the cold air, and debate where to go next. Taehyung is eager to visit Zonko’s Joke shop, while Jimin needs to visit Ceridwen’s Cauldrons to get a replacement cauldron after an unfortunate incident in your last potions lesson involving an explosion and a very angry potions teacher. You make your way around the village, stopping in at each shop you want in turn, before finally stopping at the Three Broomsticks where Jimin offers to buy the three of you butterbeers.
As he leaves the table, Taehyung gives you a look that you struggle to interpret. “Looks like Jimin is super excited for your third Halloween.”
You laugh, “He’s more excited than I am.”
“Well sure, but he wants to impress you.”
“Huh?” you blush, not sure what Taehyung’s implying, “Nah, he just wants us all to have fun.”
“Yeah, but he wants you especially have fun,”  Taehyung goes on.
“Well of course, I’m his friend.”
Taehyung rolls his eyes. “You aren’t normally this oblivious, are you? I can’t possibly be speaking to the same person who’s aced all her divination and dark arts tests this year. I am, in fact, speaking with a moron, who’s somehow possessed the body of my friend.”
“Come on Taehyung, stop being daft” you give him a shove from across the table, “What are you trying to say.”
“I’m saying that Jimin likes you,” Taehyung enunciates every word, “As. More. Than. A. Friend. And you’d have to be an idiot not to see it.”
You shake your head, perplexed. Before you can question Taehyung further, Jimin is standing at the table, trying not to spill the three butterbeers as he sets them down.
He squeezes into the space next to you, while Taehyung gives you a meaningful look, and you blush.
“Well, cheers to our first Hogsmeade visit,” Jimin raises up his mug, and you do the same, clicking your overflowing mug against his and Taehyung’s, trying not to slosh any more of the golden liquid down the side than is absolutely unavoidable.
You take a deep sip, letting the warmth seep from your mouth down to your stomach and out to the extremities of your body, ears to fingers to toes. “Oh man, that’s so good,” you say, eyes wide as you set down your mug, wiping at the froth that was left on your lips.
Taehyung and Jimin both nod in agreement, and you settle back comfortably on your chair, pondering Taehyung’s words, as your two friends begin to argue over whether chocolate frogs are actually a good snack, or if they’re only good for the collectible cards you get with them.
✽ ✽ ✽
By the time you leave the Three Broomsticks, the sky is beginning to darken, with orange coloured clouds crowding out the deep navy of the sky.
Jimin suddenly stops in his tracks, spinning around to face you: “I’ve just had a great idea!”
You wait, curious, edging him on with your raised brows:
“I have an idea how we can celebrate Halloween this year,” he continues. You and Taehyung’s silence is encouragement enough for him to continue. “We should go visit the Shrieking Shack. I mean… I know it’s a bit early for Halloween. But it’ll be the perfect haunted experience.”
An uncertainty pools in your stomach, cold and clammy, as you stare at the abandoned house that looms over Hogsmeade. It’s rumoured to be the most haunted house in Britain. You mull over the idea in your head. “Don’t you think it’s dangerous?”
When you first arrived in Hogwarts, you were startled at the sight of actual ghosts, which you had gone your whole life beleiving to be a superstition. The ghosts at Hogwarts were friendly, but ghosts haunting an old abandoned house… you weren’t so sure.
Jimin shrugs in response to your question. “Who knows.” Seeing you hesitation, he gives a tug on your sweater, “Come on. I’ll keep you safe if anything happens, I promise.”
Taehyung raises his hands in defeat, “Listen, I don’t think I’ll stay. It’s getting late, and I just remembered I have a divinations homework to finish. But you two should go have a look and find out if it’s really haunted!”
Before you can stop him, Taehyung is spinning on his heel, and heading back for Hogwarts. Not before he flashes you a quick wink, and you suddenly realise that he’s trying to give you some alone time with Jimin. Or maybe he’s trying to give Jimin some alone time with you. You’re not sure what to think, but you feel uncertainty digging its roots deep, planting you firmly on the spot - right beside Jimin. His presence is suddenly incredibly distracting, feeling his heat so close beside you, battling against the cold autumn evening. His breath billows clouds on the air, his dark eyes blinking curiously at you, pleading.
‘Alright, fine. Just a quick look!”
Jimin grins, and you allow him to pull you to the Shrieking Shack that stands, creaking, on its own, ostracised from the other buildings in Hogsmeade. The building is rounded off by a rickety fence, casting a shadow over you. A cold fear trickles down your back, but you steel yourself, determined not to make a fool of yourself in front of Jimin.
Jimin gives you a leg-up over the fence, before climbing over himself, and suddenly, there’s nothing separating you from whatever might reside in the house. A cold wind tugs at your hair and scarf, pulling away your frozen breath.
Your fingers are threaded through Jimin’s. You don’t remember grabbing him. He squeezes your fingers.
You walk forward together, slowly. At the door, Jimin murmurs a spell, and the door creaks open on unstable hinges. Inside, the house is dark, and the strong smell of mildew rises to meed your nostrils.
“Maybe we shouldn’t go in,” you whisper, trying to steady your shaking voice, “We’ve got close enough.”
“No, come on,” Jimin hisses, pulling you closer. Swallowing your fear, you follow after him, huddled close for comfort. The house feels colder than the outside breeze, and your fogged breath clouds your vision.
As you step further into the bowels of the house, your ears pick up on a hissing, muttering sound. Your freeze, paralysing fear sinking its claws into your spine, and Jimin pauses beside you, hand damp in your own. Straining your ears beyond the pounding of your own heart, you hear – yes, those are definitely voices.
Carefully, cautiously, Jimin leads you forward, down the corridor to the door that is partially open, where the voices emanate from. Pressing his finger to his lips, Jimin peers around the door to find…
A group of sixth years smoking cigarettes. As the door swings open, revealing you and Jimin, one of them glances up and then nudges the other one, “Hey, look what we got here.”
“Oi,” the other, who seems to be the more authoritative, stands up, “Scram.” He makes a grab for his wand, but you and Jimin don’t need any more prodding. Turning on your heels, you flee for the door.
You and Jimin don’t stop running until you reach the entrance to Honeydukes, shuddering out shaky laughter that fogs the cold air.
Jimin’s hand is still in yours, not having let go through the entire experience. You don’t comment as he keeps his fingers laced through yours as you walk back to Hogwarts.

[Fourth Year – October 31st]
The school is abuzz this year. Your professors have decided to host a ball on Halloween night, which all of the older students are allowed to attend. It won’t just be any kind of ball, but a masquerade ball, in keeping with the tradition of wearing costumes for Halloween.
Excitement shoots through your veins as you get ready for the night. You’re incredibly happy with the dress which your parents had sent to Hogwarts. It’s purple with a skirt that flares out and shimmers in the light, seemingly changing colour dependant on the light that strikes it’s folds and frills, shifting through shades of blue and aquamarine. You take one last look at your hair in the mirror, tucking a stray strand behind your ear, before you put on your mask of purple lace, matching your dress.
Your roommate, Padma, helps you tie the silk ribbon keeping your mask in place, and gives you a smile. “You look amazing.”
Blushing, you glance down to the floor, unsure how to take the compliment. “Thanks, you too.”
Her face flushes with happiness before she walks away to help Beatrix with her dress. Satisfied with your appearance as you cast one last glance over your reflection, you make your way out into the Slytherin common room. From the common room window, you can see the full moon shining on the surface of the Hogwarts lake.
You spot Jimin, despite his mask, immediately. He’s wearing a dark suit, with a black shirt and tie, and a black mask to match. Sneaking up behind him where he’s standing with a group of other Slytherin boys, you give him a tap on the shoulder.
He turns around, and a smile spreads across his features, “Wow, look at you!” He picks you up and spins you around, while you squeak his arms. “You look amazing.”
“You don’t look so bad yourself,” you giggle as he sets you down again, breathless.
You catch a flush of colour beneath his mask, and your mind flicks back to Taehyung, who’s been dropping hints that Jimin has a crush on you for most of the past year. You’ve been trying to ignore him, but you can’t help but notice the small hints Jimin gives out without meaning to. The thought of him crushing on you fills you with a warm, happy glow. It’s nice to feel liked, and you silently find yourself hoping – wishing – that it might actually be true.
Of course, you haven’t done anything to confirm it, not ready to put him – or yourself – on the spot. But moments like this make you all the more curious.
“Come on,” Jimin motions to you as the crowd of Slytherins begin meandering to the great hall.
You thread your fingers through his, and let him lead you along the corridors to the Great Hall, happiness fizzing pleasantly in your stomach at the touch of his hand in your own.
As you make your way into the Great Hall your breath leaves your lungs. Even after four years, when you think you’re used to all that magic has to offer, it throws another glittering spectacle your way. The entire hall is cloaked in a purple glow as the sky above your head opens up to the marvel of glowing colours from the northern lights. You know that the real sky won’t have the aurora borealis shining outside, yet it has somehow been summoned to light one room in Hogwarts castle. The whole hall is filled with sparkling streamers, and candles cast a warm glow against the cool lights shining from the sky that makes up the enchanted roof.
“Hey, look,” Jimin nudges you, “Your dress matches the sky.”
You look down at your dress, the purples and blues swirling in the seams of the material and smile. “Well it would be a shame not to go dancing when I look so good in this light,” you say, and Jimin grins, letting you lead him towards the centre of the hall, where a few other students have started dancing.
Holding onto Jimin’s arms, stronger than your remember, you spin around the dance floor, held close to his warmth.  The sky above your head is a glittering shimmer of different colours, ghosting past your eyes, with your gaze fixed on Jimin. His face is mostly obscured by his mask, but his eyes are clear to you, fixed on your own - dark pools of emotion that you can reach, interpret, if you just give yourself one moment of vulnerability. If you just give yourself one shimmering moment of honesty.
Your eyes rip away from Jimin’s, your face blushing, unsure of the feelings that you’re encountering. You notice Taehyung in your periphery vision. He’s standing at the edge of the dance floor, with a mug of butterbeer in his hand. Normally, you know that he would run over to you and Jimin, a grin on his face and a greeting on his tongue, but he seems to sense the same shimmering uncertainty hovering between you and Jimin. As he stands quiet at the edge of the dance floor, he gives you a wink, and then weaves his way back into the crowd.
This is what he’s been trying to encourage all this time – one moment of vulnerable honesty, where both you and Jimin open up enough to realise what’s so obvious to anyone else. You’re tired of waiting for confirmation.
Tipping your chin up, you push your lips to his in a rush of courage, almost as if you had drunk Felix Felicis. You can feel surprise rolling through his body, as he keeps his hold on you. Slowly, easily, he melts into your kiss. His lips open to yours, and with a whirling head, you give yourself over to the desires you had been ignoring for so long, fingers finding purchase on the soft hair at the nape of his neck. Your nerves conduct a symphony of excitement as everything you had needed was understood and relinquished to you in that moment.
As you part, both breathless, both smiling, you say,“Shall we step outside – just to get some fresh air?”
Jimin follows your cue, with an “Absolutely,”, walking after you as you weave your way through the crowds, out the door of the Great Hall, and towards the exit of the castle. The air is cold as you step out, and your shiver in the gauze of your shimmering dress, beautiful, but useless at protecting against the chill.
Seeing you trembling, Jimin removes his blazer and places it over your shoulders. You breathe deeply, enjoying the fresh crisp edge in your lungs.
Outside, with the real stars shimmering above you, unmasked from the aurora borealis that shimmered in the Great Hall, you turn to Jimin. You remove your mask, glad to let the cool air fall onto your cheeks.
Jimin takes off his mask as well, and you rake your eyes over his expression, hunting for a hint of regret at the kiss you had shared. There’s nothing but joy in his face.
As the rest of the school parties inside, you and Jimin share your hearts out in the cold.

[Fifth Year – October 31st]
Jimin is taking Halloween celebrations very seriously this year. After all – it’s not just Halloween, it’s also your anniversary. One year of being a couple.
That’s why, when the Halloween Feast ends, instead of heading back to the common room, he leads you out of the school, sneaking through back passages and hallways until you’re outside, with the brisk wind whipping your hair.
“Where are we going?”
Jimin keeps throwing you knowing glances, pushing his fingers to his lips.
Impatience bubbles below your skin, but you allow him to lead you on to the edge of the lake, where you find a spread of your favourite snacks and drinks on a checkered picnic blanket, surrounded by candles that suddenly flicker on with the murmur of a spell.
“I hope you saved room for desert like I told you to.”
“Wow, Jimin,” you kneel down on the blanket, absorbing the array he’s arranged. “This is wonderful!”
“I hoped you would like it,” you can barely see it, but in the candle light, you notice a faint blush on his cheeks.
“I love it,” you assure him, leaning across  to give him a kiss on the cheek, and the blush deepens.
You allow yourself a few tastes of the of sweets that Jimin has provided, including the apple and redcurrant tart that is, magically, still warm, before lying back on the picnic blanket, snuggling up to Jimin, who provides an arm wrapped around you to fend off the chill.
As you stare up at the cloudless sky, with stars winking down at you, a wave of satisfaction spreads through your chest. You wish you could pause your life at this moment, bound by Jimin’s arms.
“Thanks for an amazing year, Jimin,” you murmur, and you feel his grip around you tighten a little, as he squeezes you.
“Thank you too. Here’s to many more.”
With no once but the stars watching down, you lean in to kiss him, pulling him closer. His body is firm and warm, a perfect distraction from the cold air that presses in from all other sides. After a year, you have so many emotions to share with him, so much love to give him.

[Sixth Year - October 31st]
On the sixth year, your year group is allowed to go on a short school trip to a castle nestled in the mountains. The main goal of the school trip is learning of the history of some magical relics that were discovered around the area, as well as observing rare magical creatures that live in the area for your Care of Magical Creatures course.
The part you have been looking forward to the most is the Halloween celebrations. While you’ll be missing the normal Halloween feast, your teachers have allowed you your own room in the castle, where you can have a party with your year group.
The small room in the castle is cozy and cheerful, with a fire flickering in the hearth, and a tables piled high with food, making your mouth water and your eyes glisten.
When you and Jimin walk into the room together, your hand finds his, squeezing in excitement.
Taehyung walks up behind you, and throws an arm over each of your shoulders. “How are my favourite love-birds?”
Jimin laughs, “We’re good. You enjoying the school trip?”
“Sure… Although our group didn’t see anything exciting when we went orienteering. I swear the way the teachers spoke about it, I was certain that this place would be swarming with unicorns, But I suppose, even in areas where they’re more common… they’re still pretty rare.”
You bite your lip, not sure if telling Taehyung that the group you and Jimin were with managed to spot a young unicorn while you were out. Instead you say, “Isn’t this a nice change of pace from the normal Halloween feast?”
Taehyung looks around the room, a nostalgic smile on his face. “Yeah, it’s nice. Really nice... It’s strange to think that this is our penultimate year at school. It doesn’t feel that long ago we were just getting sorted into our houses.”
You feel Jimin’s squeeze your fingers. “Yeah, it’s going to be so strange when we have to leave,” he says.
“We’ll all stay friends when we leave Hogwarts though, right?” you say, and without any hesitation both Jimin and Taehyung answer - “Absolutely.”
✽ ✽ ✽
That night, you hear a knock on your dormitory door. Cracking it open, you peer out to find Jimin outside. “Hi,” he whispers.
“Jimin, you know we’re not meant to visit other students’ rooms at night,” you chide teasingly.
“I know, but I wanted to see you. Can I come in?” You peer up and down the corridor, but the entire hallway appears empty.
You nod, and let him in. The rooms you’ve been allocated at the castle are large, almost as big as the dorm rooms you’re assigned at Hogwarts, but you don’t have to share this one with other Slytherin girls. A large four-poster bed stands at the centre of the room, where you will be spending the night.
Excitement leaps up to your stomach as you realise that you’re alone in a bedroom with Jimin for the first time in a long time. Your professors are normally strict about students mingling in the dormitories at Hogwarts, so it’s difficult to get any intimate alone time.
You know the same thing is on Jimin’s mind, as his eyes fall to the bed. With a grin, you lead him over to soft mattress,  frosted by the thick duvet. Pulling him under the covers, you wrap your arms around him, your lips finding his in the dark. As he gets lost in the heat of your body, you murmur your love to him, whispered into the empty darkness beyond the haven of your bed. You learn new ways to know him, discovering new parts of him. The night stretches out to infinity, wobbling, and then collapsing with your secretly shared ecstasy.

[Seventh Year - October 27th]
As it’s your final year at Hogwarts, some of your year have been tasked with helping to organise events. Of course, Jimin offered to organise the Halloween Feast, but now, as the night creeps closer, you can see he is getting more and more nervous.
When he comes back to the common room after another planning meeting, his tension automatically translates for you with a sigh, as he flops onto one of the chairs and rubs his eyes.
“You doing okay?” you ask, although you know he’s not.
His hair flops over his furrowed brows as he hangs his head. “It’s fine. I just… I want to make this Halloween Feast the best it’s ever been, and I don’t know if it’s all going to come together the way I want...”
You make you way to the back of his chair, and begin to massage the tense muscles in his shoulders. “I’m sure it’ll be amazing.”
“But don’t you see?” Jimin looks up at you, straining his neck, “This is going to be the last Halloween Feast we have at Hogwarts. It’s got to be amazing! Or I’ll let you down.”
“No matter what, if I get to celebrate it with you, it’ll be amazing,” you reassure him, bending to plant a kiss on his forehead.
He smiles, and you feel his muscles relaxing against you. “Well, no matter what, you’ll be in for a treat, I promise.”
“I always am, when I get to spend all my days with you.” You plant a kiss on his lips this time, feeling him smile into you.

[Seventh Year – October 31st]
The day of the Halloween Feast rolls around, and you meet Jimin in the common room, both dressed up, ready for the feast.
Jimin’s face melts into a soft smile, seeing you, with your hair tied back, and your gown billowing out around you as you run up to hug him. You can smell his cologne as you pull away from him, dizzying you, as it clings to your clothing – a reminder that he held you close.
“You ready for this?” you ask, and he gives you a nod, hand squeezing at your own.
You let him lead you down the hallways to the Great Hall. You take in every detail, knowing you’ve got a limited time left to appreciate the unique crevices of Hogwarts, with the twisting staircases, and the curious paintings. You’re not sure what will happen once you graduate. Will you have to go back to a non-magical life with your parents? Or will you get to stay in the world of magic, using the skills you’ve learnt in potion making, divination, and spell casting?
Jimin’s hand grips yours tightly, and you know he’s thinking of what will happen after you leave as well.
As you step into the Great Hall, your worries are quickly swept away.
The Great Hall has been completely transformed. Candles float in the air, burning flames of blue and orange, sparking up to the sky, which burns golden from the setting sun. Crystals dangle down from the ceiling, cascading light across the hall. The tables have strings of lights shining around them. At first glance they appear to be fairy lights, but when you look closer you realise they are actually specks of light floating on their own, like fireflies. Pumpkins sit on the table surrounded by flowers, and sprigs of ivy cascade down the table legs.
“You really outdid yourself,” you tell Jimin in a hushed tone of reverence, “This is beautiful.” He glows with pleasure as you sit down at the Slytherin table.
You feel a poke behind you, and turn in your seat to see Taehyung, who’s stopped on his way to the Hufflepuff table. He grins at you, “Amazing, whoever worked on this did an amazing job.” He grins at you, while Jimin flushes at the indirect complement.
Clasping a hand on Jimin’s shoulder, Taehyung says, “Good job, for real,” before he’s ushered along by some other Hufflepuffs who are trying to get to their seats.
The night seems to go by in a blur of dazzling lights and delicious food. You sit back in your chair, as a house elf comes around offering tea and mints after the dinner. “This was amazing,” you tell Jimin. “I’m sad it’s our last Halloween at Hogwarts. I want to do this all again”
Jimin nods, “It doesn’t need to be the last amazing Halloween we have together though.”
You smile. “Of course not.”
“Hey,” Jimin shuffles in his chair, “I know you might want to go to university after this, but… what would you say if, after all that… we moved in together?”
You blush, thinking it over. You and Jimin have been together for so long, it only seems like a natural conclusion that you would end up together after this. Yet, it seems difficult to imagine what it will be like to be with Jimin outside of Hogwarts, in a hazy future. All you know is that if Jimin’s a part of your life, then the days will be bright.
Without giving it any more thought, knowing exactly what you want, you say, “Yes. I’d like that very much.”

[Four Years after Graduating from Hogwarts - October 31st]
It’s the day of the Halloween party – the Halloween party that Jimin has become famous among for hosting at his house. Somehow, without you noticing, late afternoon has slunk in, and you’re helping Jimin add the last finishing touches to your house, making sure all the foods are ready for when guests arrive.
You look around at the spread of food crammed on the small kitchen table. “Not too bad, Park Jimin” you say, giving him an approving smile.
“Well, I couldn’t have got it all done on time without your help,” Jimin says, making his way over to sweep you into a hug. He smells of spices and vanilla from helping you to bake in the kitchen. There’s flour on his hands, which has definitely ended up on your jumper. Nothing a little bit of magic won’t fix.
“Hey,” he pulls away from you, “I was going to ask after the party, but I’m too excited to wait.”
You furrow your brows, wondering what he’s getting at.
He licks his lips, looking down at you, and you see his Adam’s apple bob. “I was wondering...” he pauses, and your hearts starts thudding against your rib cage.
“How would you feel about marrying me?” JImin asks, eyes searching yours.
You don’t give him any moment of hesitation or uncertainty. You’re already pressing a kiss to his lips before your remember directing your body to do so. “I’d want nothing more!” you murmur as you part.
“Good,” he laughs, nuzzling your neck as you hold him close. “Now I won’t have to return the ring I bought you.”
✽ ✽ ✽
After you wave off the party that evening, Taehyung being the last to leave as per usual, Jimin pulls you into the living room, where the remains of the party still linger in the form of dishevelled decorations, and the last crumbs of the snacks you baked.
“Well, did I manage to out do all the Halloweens you’ve had?” Jimin asks as you both snuggle up on the sofa.
“You definitely have,” you assure him, “I mean… you proposed to me!”
“Well, I guess I’ll just have to do even better by actually marrying you next year,” he retorts.
“October wedding?”
“Definitely.”
“I’d like that a lot.”
