homura akemi analysis post pwease

so firstly, I am painfully aware I am in the minority here, whoever may be reading this if you disagree w my views on Homhom its free to scroll LOL

Homura was the first character I absolutely fell in love with, like just obsessed. I think its because the way the show is laid out they are obviously trying to lead you to think she’s sus or an antagonist & only after you reach her backstory episode you’re supposed to be sympathetic to how much she’s sacrificed. I always knew right from the beginning she was obviously protecting something, cold characters are almost always using the facade as a form of armour.

Homura in the original timeline has no one, shes just gotten out of the hospital, never had a friend and probably believed for a long time she would not survive. She’s incredibly meek and she doesn’t know herself or who she wants to be at all. Obviously we only get a glimpse at original timeline Homura but its pretty obvious she’s very impressionable. When people heal from something after believing it was sure to kill them, in Homuras case her heart condition, most people go one of two ways: cherishing every moment and valuing their newly gifted life or being incredibly reckless because they’ll only be losing what they were never meant to have to begin with. I think it was a combination of that factor, her existing loneliness and Madokas pure genuine friendship that fuelled Homura to protect her originally.

She was so starstruck by Madokas selflessness to protect other magical girls, animals, and humanity as a whole. Madoka was the exact type of person Homura looked up to. Obviously none of them knew at that point about the inevitable demise once you form your contract so maybe the decision wasn’t AS weighted, but like I said before Homura seems to view her life as expendable, so the cost of devoting herself to protecting Madoka wasn’t the loss of her future, but her newfound purpose. Also I think she definitely only expected to have to reset once. Lol, poor girl you really got trolled.

Outside of wanting to protect Madoka, wanting to be like Madoka, is one of her biggest motivations. She wants to be selfless so Madoka doesnt need to. She essentially wants to give Madoka the long healthy life she was gifted from the universe. Obviously it doesn’t work like that lmao but the whole time she’s trying to take her miracle and let Madoka enjoy it. In her eyes Madoka deserved it more than she did. Madoka was brave and loving so she should get to live the long healthy life. Homura saw herself as none of these things, so the guilt was unbearable. She made her wish first and foremost to protect Madoka the person she valued above all else, but also to give herself a reason to go on. Homura has a very low impression of herself, seeing herself as completely aimless until her wish, at which point she starts to view herself as tool or a stepping stone for Madoka to get to enjoy a life without any sacrifice.

Homura wants to be to Madoka what Madoka was to her which was a glimmering hope for the future. Madoka showed her the value of human connection and love. She is naturally selfless and courageous from somewhere within and Homura isn’t. They are both selfless but it comes from very different motivators. Madoka believes everyone deserves to live with as little suffering as possible & she’s brave enough to step in when help is needed. She cares deeply for every living thing. Homura doesn’t see that far ahead of herself. Obviously its never stated that she has depression or imposter syndrome or survivors guilt but I definitely think she does. She’s selfless only because she sees no value to herself. She’s very timid by nature. When they’re both about to turn into witches and Homura suggests letting themselves turn, that they could give up together, be together as witches forever, this was her true nature slipping back in. Her nature to take whatever is given to her, accept her inevitable demise. Stop looking through to a better future and get stuck looking whats staring her right in the face in that moment. Extremely depressed outlook. I feel like a lot of us can relate to feeling like its not worth fighting for a better future, to just take the pain, that its somehow deserved & at least it’s the fastest way out. This is clearly one of the earlier timelines as she still has her glasses. This moment is probably one of her deepest regrets going forward, and a catalyst to the personality shift from insecure & soft into cold & mysterious. Madoka not accepting the offer of giving up is a blinding reminder how different they are. How obvious it is that she is so much weaker than Madoka. This incident, in combination with Homura being very meticulous about never wasting what little time there is per reset, as well as getting farther and farther away from the original timeline where their friendship formed organically, and not to mention watching Madoka doomed to die or turn into a witch over and over again is the foundation of the emotionally distant Homura we see throughout the final timeline.

I feel like I could definitely say more but like I said before I havent done a rewatch of pmmm is at least a year or two at this point. Even tho I’ve seen it upwards of 10 times I still feel a little bit rusty lmao. It’s on my watch list again tho so maybe I’ll write a deeper analysis once I do!

ok. so. The Princess Bride. i read it yesterday.

and right up front, before even a review, i’m gonna go ahead and list everything objectionable in the book that i can recall. please don’t take the length of the bullet pointed items to follow as an indication that the book was wildly problematic and offended me at every turn; it wasn’t and it didn’t. but there were some things that made me go: 😑 or 😒, and here it all is, presented with context, before anything else, because to be honest, i didn’t expect any of it. the film is relatively spotless, which is pretty rare for that era, and if any of you are thinking of reading it, you could do with being more prepared for this than i was.

first off, racism. two passing remarks. one isn’t even in the story proper; it’s in the first whole long intro bit from the author/narrator. that takes some explanation, i suppose: like in the film, the story is presented as a book having been written by “S. Morganstern,” except instead of a grandfather reading to his sick grandson, the narrator is interjecting with notes on the original text that he has abridged. the beginning is a whole long shpiel that, in my opinion, could have been significantly pared down with absolutely zero loss to the story (which! hey! the film did perfectly! go figure!). anyway, the first racist remark is an absolutely tasteless line in which the narrator pisses and moans about his fat son, making a crack about “painting him yellow” and making him a sumo wrestler. y i k e. the other passing remark is from Miracle Max (really, truly, the film version of this scene is miles better than the book version, but contains an important plot detail, so you should prob still read it, but i’ll give you the lowdown if you wanna skip). he refers to Iñigo as a sp*ck (rather bafflingly, i might add, bc Iñigo is a Spanish man... from Spain... not a Hispanic or Latino man from Latin America. so. i mean i’m certainly not an expert on slurs but... i have never in my life heard that term in reference to a person from Spain, and am virtually certain it was invented to refer to ppl from the americas) and in the same breath uses an objectionable term for a Polish person. sooo... again: y i k e. what gets me is that... these could’ve just been edited out? why weren’t they? i mean i know why but

fat shaming! see above. though to be honest, any true negativity about fatness is restricted to the author/narrator’s interjections; there are a few minor fat characters in the story and those depictions, without being too long-winded or spoilery, didn’t offend me (fyi: i’m fat). if you want the details, please feel free to message me about it.

if we can go back to the whole long beginning shpiel from the author/narrator, it’s just... eh. he comes off as kind of a jackass, tbh. not even halfway through it i found myself more than a little impatient for the story to begin, and that could be at least partly because the film spoiled me with a lovely, not annoying, not problematic scene of Granddad Columbo reading to Baby Fred Savage where no one made any racist remarks or ragged on fat kids. the basic gist, if you want to skip it, is that the author, as a kid, had this book read to HIM by his father, who was a Florinese immigrant, and nearly illiterate in English, but still labored over reading the English translation to his American-born son, who adored the book and requested it read to him dozens and dozens of times over the years, refusing to read it himself (though he read plenty of other books). as an adult, he buys his son the book, and is crushed when the son doesn’t like it. he then reads it for the first time, and realizes his father skipped over huge, boring blocks of text. he read his son only The Good Parts. so he decides to edit that shit out himself and release the abridged version he loves so much. add into that some complaining about his wife and some extra blah blah, and that’s pretty much it.

you remember the scene in the movie where The Man In Black/Westley almost slaps Buttercup for what he believes is lying? in the book he actually slaps her. not that his actions seem supported or endorsed by the text, but still, there you are. Buttercup does push him off a cliff soon after, though, so. i wouldn’t call that ‘even’ exactly but, shrug

Vizzini, in the book, has a fucky leg and his back isn’t quite straight, and he’s referred to repeatedly as a “humpback” or “hunchback” which needless to say is Not Kosher

that, as i recall, is it. i hope i’m not forgetting anything. now onto content/trigger warnings:

alcoholism. this shouldn’t be a surprise if you’ve seen the movie: Iñigo has some, shall we say, issues

Fezzik’s parents were... terrible. CPS would be all over them. spoiler: basically they emotionally blackmailed their son into fighting professionally, which they knew he hated, by telling him they’d abandon him if he didn’t

Buttercup has some kinda messed up (read: unsettling but in no way graphic) nightmares after leaving Westley when they’re found by Prince Humperdinck at the Fire Swamp, mostly involving bearing children to the Prince who she once again is set to marry

the slurs and whatnot i mentioned above

violence, obviously. nothing worse than the film as i recall.

that’s it i think.

okay. all that said. did i enjoy the book? yes i did. a lot.

now, you might be thinking: jesus, Kathleen, after all the shit you just listed? and to this i reply: listen. there is no Unproblematic Media, so you either enjoy some things that are flawed, or you enjoy nothing at all. there is plenty of objectionable shit in Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit! fucking plenty! and i love those books! and so do plenty of other people! in my own humble opinion, the good story is worth the shitty bits, because the shitty bits aren’t like, fundamental to the plotline. the story isn’t built on offensive humor or nasty, bigoted attitudes. and they’re also not the most egregious examples of Objectionable Content i’ve come across- not by a longshot. there are levels to offense. there are tiers of bullshit. this is on a far lower tier than a whole host of other things i could mention. but if any of this stuff i’ve listed crosses a line for you, i totally understand and respect that. that’s why i’ve bothered to list it at all. imo, how you respond to objectionable content is important: you don’t ignore it or excuse it, you acknowledge and criticize it. and if you still enjoy whatever the thing is, you allow yourself to enjoy it, without getting hissy or defensive with people for whom the objectionable content ruined the book/movie/whatever.

there you go, there’s my disclaimer for having enjoyed the book. your mileage may vary.

okay. so. review time.

Buttercup is a far more interesting character in the book than the movie, for which the movie can’t be faulted all that much, because you can’t easily translate a character’s inner monologue/unspoken thoughts to the screen, especially not with the time limit that comes with the medium of film. but watching her struggle with her feelings and life choices (and... lack thereof, since her choice is between marrying the prince and being put to death, which isn’t much of a choice, even if she tries to reason it out later by telling herself she COULD have said no... and initially did) creates far more of a bond between her and the reader in the book than, personally, i felt watching the movie. also she has a great line after Westley calls her beautiful at their reunion- she says something like, ‘everyone’s always calling me beautiful, i have a mind too, why don’t you talk about that’

Both Westley and Buttercup are immature, naive, and foolish in the beginning, and if Westley strikes you as Extra Dickish, a) rewatch the film! he did act like a bit of a dick, there, didn’t he? b) remember that in the story he’s a young man between the ages of eighteen and twenty five, which in my considerable experience is the age at which young men are generally at their peak of Asshole. sorry dudes

and not that Buttercup herself is a complete peach! she deals very poorly with her emotions in general and acts kinda shitty herself once or twice. i won’t say too much lest i spoil everything that’s different between the film and the book.

Prince Humperdinck is also a more three dimensional character; still a rat bastard tho.

onto Fezzik and Iñigo.

as i have said in other blog posts, these boys are... pretty much the whole reason i sought out the book. and... jesus.

you get all the way into the tragic backstories that were only hinted at in the film. okay, Iñigo’s backstory was more than hinted- but of course you go so much deeper in the book- and Fezzik’s was less than hinted, reduced mostly to a peek at the insecurity that Vizzini exploits and preys upon to keep him in line. not that you’d have to expend a great effort to him to keep him in line; his personality is docile and non-confrontational. truly not the slightest bit aggressive by nature. he’s also kinda clingy and needy, which is a thousand percent understandable given his childhood, and tbqh doesn’t need to be browbeaten for Vizzini to keep him on his short, cruel leash. which makes it all the more painful! hurrah! 😭

also you actually get to meet Iñigo’s father, Domingo Montoya, in a flashback, aaaand... i kinda love him. probably predictable if you know me.

anyway. tragic backstories. which further illuminate the emotional and psychological issues that make them so dependent on Vizzini, and turn them to lives of crime in his employ. poor boys! oy gevalt. sympathy abounds; i honestly don’t know how you could go through the book and not fall at least a little bit in love with this duo, whose friendship is precious and adorable and a balm to the soul that is aching from their painful life stories and unhealthy coping mechanisms. they’re each, very plainly, the only friend the other has in the world, and are constantly helping and bolstering one another. it’s heartbreakingly sweet. i think those boys will be alright as long as they stick together.

and now, the repeated theme of the book, that is presented with far less intensity in the film: life isn’t fair. which, one supposes, is true. but while the narrator’s framing of that assertion may give you the same misgivings they gave me- bitching about his fat son and his less than ideal relationship with his wife- you can also step back and appreciate it as a wee pearl of wisdom. life is often unfair, but that doesn’t mean it’s altogether bad or that you can’t enjoy it. idk, that’s my attitude, man.

i could talk about the ending here, but i won’t. at least not too much. not to spoiler-ish-ly. if you don’t want to know anything about the book’s ending at all, feel free to not read the last bit here, except for the very last lines which are bolded.

the ending to the book is different than the movie. there is a more philosophical, open ended conclusion than you could really get away with in a movie. at least this movie.

just throwing it out there: i believe in happy endings. ones in real life. but i kind of disagree with the author a little bit, in that i don’t think happy endings necessarily have to be perfect and unblemished to qualify as happy endings. that may be the way “happily ever after” is generally presented, but to me, “happily ever after” means, maybe some shit happened, but none of it was completely devastating, and in the final analysis, life was satisfying. that’s the kind of real life happy ending i’m aiming (and hoping) for. this might sound vague but i hope it’ll make sense if you read the book.

The temptation in the wilderness

Jesus was led by the Spirit out into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, after which he was very hungry, and the tempter came and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to turn into loaves.’ But he replied, ‘Scripture says:

Man does not live on bread alone

but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’

The devil then took him to the holy city and made him stand on the parapet of the Temple. ‘If you are the Son of God’ he said ‘throw yourself down; for scripture says:

He will put you in his angels’ charge,

and they will support you on their hands

in case you hurt your foot against a stone.’

Jesus said to him, ‘Scripture also says:

You must not put the Lord your God to the test.’

Next, taking him to a very high mountain, the devil showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendour. ‘I will give you all these’ he said, ‘if you fall at my feet and worship me.’ Then Jesus replied, ‘Be off, Satan! For scripture says:

You must worship the Lord your God,

and serve him alone.’

Then the devil left him, and angels appeared and looked after him.

Jesus fasted for forty days and forty nights and was tempted.

At that time Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry. The tempter approached and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves of bread.” He said in reply, “It is written:

One does not live on bread alone,

but on every word that comes forth

from the mouth of God.”

Then the devil took him to the holy city, and made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written:

He will command his angels concerning you

and with their hands they will support you,

lest you dash your foot against a stone.”

Jesus answered him, “Again it is written,

You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.”

Then the devil took him up to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence, and he said to him, “All these I shall give to you, if you will prostrate yourself and worship me.” At this, Jesus said to him, “Get away, Satan! It is written:

The Lord, your God, shall you worship

and him alone shall you serve.”

Then the devil left him and, behold, angels came and ministered to him.

Reflections (4)

(i) First Sunday of Lent

We have just begun the Season of Lent. There are no flowers decorating our altar. The colour of vestments has gone from green, the colour of life, to a more sombre purple. The gospel reading gives us the rather disturbing image of Jesus in the wilderness being tempted by Satan. Just after his baptism and before he begins his public ministry, Jesus spends forty days in the wilderness in fasting and prayer to prepare himself for what lay ahead. After that period of forty days, while still in the wilderness, Jesus was put to the test by Satan. The first two temptations begin with the words, ‘If you are the Son of God…’ These are subtle temptations. Satan recognizes Jesus’ identity as Son of God, as proclaimed by God at the time of Jesus’ baptism, ‘this is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased’. Yet, Satan puts that identity to the test by suggesting that Jesus use his power as Son of God to work extravagant miracles, turning stone into bread, jumping from the pinnacle of the Temple. Then he will quickly have a large following. People will always be impressed by extraordinary signs. The third temptation was also subtle. Jesus came to proclaim the presence of God’s kingdom, to create an alternate kingdom to all the various kingdoms of this world. Satan offers Jesus all these kingdoms of the world, the very goal of Jesus’ mission. However, such an offer comes with a huge price. Jesus must first worship Satan and not God.

Jesus was tested in a very fundamental way in the wilderness. His very identity and the character of his life’s work were put to the test. He was tempted by what appeared to be a great good, a quick path to having a large following and acquiring dominion over all. Jesus came through this testing ordeal; he resisted the temptation, and remained faithful to the work that God had given him to do. The gospel reading suggests that what allowed Jesus to come through this time of temptation was the word of God. Jesus resisted each temptation, by quoting from the Scriptures, ‘We do not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God’; ‘You must not put the Lord your God to the test’; ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve him alone’. The word of God guided and empowered him in this time of great vulnerability.

When Jesus gave his disciples and all of us the prayer that has become known as the Lord ’s Prayer, it included the petition, ‘Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil’. Jesus seems to have been aware that just as he was tempted in a very fundamental way, so too would his followers be tempted. Just as his identity as Son of God was put to the test, so too would our own baptismal identity be tested. This gospel reading is placed at the very beginning of Lent because Lent is a season when we are invited to become more aware of the reality of temptation in our own lives. Jesus was tempted by what appeared on the surface to be something good, a quick and easy route to the coming of God’s kingdom. We are not usually tempted by what is obviously bad. Rather, temptations emerge out of some good that we selfishly desire for ourselves alone. The most memorable story of temptation in the Jewish Scriptures is the temptation of Adam and Eve which is our first reading. The writer of that story understood the subtle nature of temptation, how what is good and pleasing has the greatest power to lead us astray. It is said of Eve that she saw that the tree that had been placed out of bounds by God was good to eat and pleasing to the eye and desirable for the knowledge that it could give. Strange as it sounds, goodness provides the occasion for temptation, the goodness around us in other people, in places and events, the goodness within us, in our talents and gifts. The power of goodness or beauty or knowledge is such that we can be tempted to pursue them in a selfish way, in a way that seeks to control them for our own personal advantage.

If the first reading and the gospel reading remind us of the power and nature of temptation, Saint Paul in the second reading reminds us of an even great power at work among us and within us, and that is the power of God’s grace, released through the death and resurrection of Christ. In the words of Paul, ‘the good act of one man brings everyone life and makes them justified’. In the verse immediately following where our reading ends, Paul puts it very succinctly, ‘where sin abounds, grace abounds all the more’. In our struggle with temptation we have wonderful resources at our disposal, the Holy Spirit, the word of God, the sacraments, the inspiration of faithful followers of the Lord. We enter Lent in the knowledge that the Lord who was tempted in every way that we are is powerfully present to us in our own testing times, and will remain faithful to us, even when we fail.

(ii) First Sunday of Lent

When any one of us looks into our hearts with any degree of honesty, we become aware that we are not all that we could be. We can identify situations we were in that we did not deal with as well as we might have. We can think of people that we did not relate to as well as we might have. If we have values that we try to live by, and most of us do, we recognize ways in which we failed to live according to those values. As Christians we take our values from the gospels and the New Testament in general. We hear the call to follow Jesus, to allow him to live out his life in and through us. Yet, we know that we do not always respond to that call or follow through on it. To that extent, the story of Adam and Eve in today’s first reading is the story of us all. They heard God’s word; they intended to keep that word, but when their fidelity to that word was put to the test, they failed the test. They acted in a way that was contrary to God’s word; they put what they wanted before what God wanted. What we have come to call the original sin, since the time of Augustine, is perhaps better called the typical sin, the sin of us all. Adam and Eve are everyone. Paul acknowledges as much in this morning’s first reading. Having stated that ‘sin entered the world through one man’, he immediately goes on to state, ‘everyone has sinned’.

There is an emphasis on the reality of sin in the readings for this first Sunday of Lent. That emphasis is certainly there in the first reading, and, to some extent, in the second reading as well. Yet, in this morning’s gospel reading there is no trace of sin. That, of course, is because the gospel reading is not really about us; it is not about everyone. It is a story about one man who was unique, at least in one respect. The letter to the Hebrews speaks of Jesus as one who ‘in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin’. Like Adam and Eve he heard God’s word; like them, his fidelity to God’s word was put to the test; unlike them, he passed the test. He remained true to his identity as the faithful Son of God. The gospel reading this morning, then, tells a very different story to the story told by the first reading. Those two reading are at opposite ends of a spectrum. Then we have the second reading which comes between those two opposites. Paul in that reading is aware of both of those stories, the story of sin and the story of grace, the story of Adam and the story of Christ. Paul contrast what he calls ‘one man’s fall’ and ‘the good act of one man’. Both of those acts, Paul says, have consequences for all of us. Both the story of sin and the story of grace have left their mark on us. Yet Paul is convinced that the story of grace, the story of Jesus, has left a much more significant mark on us that the story of sin, the story of Adam. That is why he says in that reading, ‘the results of the gift (of grace) outweigh the results of one man’s sin’. A few verses just beyond where our second reading ends, Paul puts that conviction very succinctly, ‘where sin abounds, grace abounds all the more’.

As we begin Lent the readings remind us of the reality of sin and temptation and of our proneness to yield to temptation; they remind us that the story of Adam and Eve can easily become our story. More importantly, however, the readings also remind us that Jesus’ victory over sin is also our victory and that his story can also be our story. We have been baptized into Christ; his Spirit has been poured into our lives; he lives among us and within each of us. He is all the time working to live out his own life of faithfulness to God in us and among us. There is a power within us and among us greater than the power of sin, and that is the power of the risen Lord. In one of his other letters Paul says, ‘it is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me’. That is something we can all say, to some extent. The realization that Christ lives in us, that his power is at work within and among us, and that this power is greater than the power of sin, gives us hope, makes us confident as we try to keep on taking the path the Lord is calling us to take. We may fall down, but the Lord is there to lift us to our feet again; we may struggle with some weakness or other, but it is never a doomed struggle because, a Paul says, ‘his power at work within us can do immeasurably more than all we can ask or imagine’. When we struggle, he struggles with us. Lent is a time to allow the risen Lord to live out his victory over sin in our lives more fully, so that when Easter comes we can renew our baptism promises with conviction.

Today is the first Sunday of Lent. The colour of the vestments has changed from green to purple. The flowers have gone from the altar. This is a sober season in the church’s year. The readings for the first Sunday of Lent have a sober theme to them, the theme of sin and temptation. Probably the context in which we use the word ‘temptation’ most frequently is in the Lord’s Prayer, ‘Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil’. In these two petitions, Jesus was teaching us to take the reality of temptation seriously, to take evil seriously. We need to keep on asking God to deliver us from evil, to keep us from falling when we are tempted, when we are put to the test.

Jesus himself knew the power of temptation. This morning’s gospel reading is Matthew’s account of how Jesus experienced the power of temptation just after his baptism and just before he began his public ministry. This was a fundamental temptation that was directed to the very core of his identity. At his baptism Jesus’ identity as Son of God was affirmed by God, ‘You are my Son, the beloved’. It was that identity, which defined who Jesus was, that was put to the test in the wilderness. The first two temptations begin with the phrase, ‘If you are the Son of God...’ It was Jesus’ fundamental trust in God as Son that was being put to the test. He was tempted to turn stones into bread, on the basis that God could not be trusted to provide for him. He was tempted to throw himself down from the pinnacle of the temple to test whether he was really God’s beloved whom God would protect. He was tempted to worship Satan as a shortcut to power and glory rather than trusting God and surrendering to God’s purpose for his life. The core of who Jesus was being put to the test. If he failed this test, everything else would fail. His ministry would be ineffective before it had begun. Jesus did not fail to test. He was true to his relationship with God; he relied on God alone, and in particular on God’s word, to repel the temptation to behave in a way that was contrary to the person that he was.

Jesus included a petition relating to temptation in the Lord’s Prayer because he knew that our own baptismal identity would be put to the test, just as his was. As Christians, the fundamental relationship in our lives is our relationship with God and our relationship with God’s Son, Jesus, and it is that relationship which will be put to the test more than once in our lives. At our baptism we became sons and daughters of God in Christ, members of the body of Christ, the church, and temples of the Holy Spirit. That is who we are as baptized in people, and it is that which will be put to the test as we go through life. The baptism which we are about to celebrate reminds us of our own baptism and gives us an opportunity to renew our own baptism. When we witness a baptism we hear the call to be faithful to our own baptismal identity when it is put to the test. This morning we also have among us some of the children who are to make their confirmation this coming month of May. Confirmation is a moment when we confirm our baptism in a very public way. Our parents brought us to the baptismal font to be baptized, but we bring ourselves to confirmation. The young people who are to be confirmed are being asked to stand up and to confirm their baptism for themselves. They are to say their own ‘yes’ to Jesus, just as in today’s gospel reading Jesus said his own ‘yes’ to God in spite of the strong temptation to do otherwise. The young people who are to be confirmed have each written a letter, with their parents’ approval, in which they state that they will stay away from alcohol, at least until a certain age, and that they will stay away from all dangerous drugs for life. In this way they promise to stay away from all those substances which will leave them vulnerable to temptation, the temptation to deny the person they have become through baptism, and the person they are called to be every day of their lives. They will bring forward their letter at the time that the bread and wine for the Mass is brought forward.

We need good inner resources if we are to be faithful to our baptismal identity. The Lord himself is our primary resource in times of temptation; he is always praying for us. What he once said to Peter and his companions he says to us all, ‘Simon, Simon, Satan has demanded to sift you all like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail’. We should never be slow to draw on that rich resource of the Lord’s prayerful presence to us when temptation comes knocking on our door. God’s word is another great resource for us. Just like Jesus in the wilderness, we too can be strengthened by God’s word to remain faithful, if we allow that word to find a home in us.

(iv) First Sunday of Lent

It has often been said that conflict in life is inevitable. What matters is how such conflict is handled and dealt with. The ‘peace process’, as it has become know, is an effort to deal with a conflict on our own island, one that has brought death and destruction to many. The hopes that were present before Christmas for significant progress in the resolution of that conflict have been dealt a serious blow in recent weeks. We continue to hope and pray that those who are best placed to bring some resolution to this conflict will not give up on their efforts. We are aware of conflict in other parts of the world, particularly in the land of Jesus. There seems to be some hopeful signs of progress in the resolution of that long standing conflict. In the narrower sphere of our own lives, we can find ourselves from time to time in some form of conflict with others. We sometimes need to call on a third party to help us to resolve such conflict.

We can also be aware of conflict within ourselves; we can be pulled in two different directions at once. Sometimes we know deep down that one of the two directions we are being pulled in will not serve us or others well. We have traditionally spoken of this as an experience of temptation. The gospel reading describes Jesus’ experience of temptation. We are given a glimpse into an inner conflict as he begins his public ministry. At his baptism, Jesus had an experience of God his Father, assuring him that he was the beloved Son, and filling him with the Holy Spirit. Shortly after his baptism in the Jordan, he had a very different king of experience in the wilderness, an experience of Satan, tempting him to take a very different path to the one on which his baptism had launched him. At his baptism, Jesus was sent forth by the Father in the service of others; in the wilderness, Satan tempts him to be self-serving - to look out for his own physical needs, to gain a following by indulging in the spectacular, to sell his soul for the sake of power and status. The gospel reading portrays what must have been a very real experience of temptation for Jesus; it gives us a glimpse of a very real conflict within him. At the very end of Jesus’ public ministry, we are given a glimpse of another conflict within Jesus. In the Garden of Gethsemane, he struggled with the temptation to avoid the cross that lay before him by pulling back from the mission which began at his baptism. On both occasions, at the beginning and end of his ministry, in the wilderness and in Gethsemane, Jesus resisted the temptation that assailed him. He resolved his inner conflict in favour of remaining faithful to God’s call and to the mission that God had entrusted to him.

The letter to the Hebrews says of Jesus that ‘he has been tempted as we are’. In becoming like us, Jesus experienced temptation as we do. None of us are strangers to temptation. We have all known our own version of Jesus’ wilderness and Gethsemane experiences. If it was a struggle at times for Jesus to remain faithful to God’s call, it will certainly be a struggle for us. We will find ourselves pulled in a direction that does not correspond to God��s will for our lives. Unlike Jesus, we will sometimes find ourselves taking that direction, going down a path that does not correspond to what God wants for us. In that sense, the story of Adam and Eve in the garden, which we read in today’s first reading, is the story of us all. According to that story, God allowed Adam and Eve to eat of the fruit of all the trees in the garden, except one. They had great scope to enjoy the goodness of God’s creation, but there was a limit. They were tempted to ignore this limit, to reach for something that was out of bounds for them, and they surrendered to that temptation. Their failure to be faithful to what God asked of them stands in sharp contrast to the faithfulness of Jesus in today’s gospel reading. St. Paul in today’s second reading reflects on that contrast between Adam and Christ, between what he calls the fall of Adam and the good act of Christ.

If the story of Adam and Eve is very much our story, St. Paul would remind us that the story of Jesus can also be our story. We have been baptized into Christ; we receive him in the Eucharist; his Spirit has been given to us. When we are tempted, therefore, we do not stand alone. At such moments, the Lord is present within us and around us, helping us to be faithful to God’s will for our lives as he was. The Lord wants to live out his faithfulness to God in each one of our lives; his grace is at work in our lives to enable us to be as faithful to God as he was. Lent is a season when we are called to move from being an Adam figure to becoming more of a Christ figure. It is a time when we consciously strive to allow our lives to be shaped more by the story of Jesus than the story of Adam. In Lent we try to identify the temptations that are most significant for us; we acknowledge honestly the ways in which we have surrendered to such temptations, and we invite the Lord to enter our lives more fully, so that the story of his faithfulness to God’s call becomes our story to a greater degree. If that happens for us this Lent, even is some small way, we will stand with confidence to renew our baptismal promises this coming Easter Sunday.
