Xie Lian really is a menace BUT I thinks it's cool that before it was revealed he intentionally cooks bad to honor his mother that we get the scene (in the show at least, I don't remember if it happened in the books) where he stops Banyue from eating the disaster he made and he cooks her something that is actually good enough to eat. He will really feed crimes against humanity to everyone else, including Hua Cheng, but not Banyue because that is his daughter and she needs to grow big and strong. She probably thinks that everyone else are just super picky eaters because Xie Lian's cooking is actually fine? But she's never had his "real" cooking aside from that very first time and she just thought it was a mistake, not par the course.

Honestly I wish that she didn't spend so much time in that jar (what is she even doing in there? Is it like a Pokeball or something?) and that we got to see more Dad Xie Lian with her. Xie Lian is fucking terrible with all of the other kids (he even makes poor Guzi eat his shitty cooking) but maybe he just always wanted a daughter and that is why he treats Banyue better?

Like… we finally got Xie Lian and Hua Cheng to admit to each other that yep, it’s mutual! Woo! But then…

Then we’re confronted with a ~300 page flashback to the most terrifyingly heartbreaking and traumatizing time in Xie Lian’s past and I just… ugghhhh 😭

He was so very close to completely giving in to the agony and hate. And I felt that.

But by the end, he still manages to see a sliver of hope in the world and decides to pick himself back up and continue to save people as best he could.

Xie Lian is a certified Cinnamon Roll and a badass, and I can honestly say he’s one of my favorite fictional characters of all time.

Side note: Do we ever find out what that last mural depicts?? Did Hua Cheng paint something that was just so lovey dovey it was cringey? Or did he go all out and paint some straight up filthy nasty sex? Either way would honestly be hilarious but I’ve gotta know 😐

I am 100% completely convinced that on Mount Yujun when Hua Cheng burst into thousands of butterflies that he did not mean to do that. That man was freaking out so bad at finally finding Xie Lian again and holding his hand and helping him and Xie Lian being right there that when he finally saw just the slightest glimpse of Xie Lian’s face and the thought of Xie Lian seeing him that his nerves took over and he burst into thousands of butterflies. All throughout the walk, Hua Cheng was trying his damnedest to keep it the fuck together (literally) but he just couldn’t anymore. You cannot convince me otherwise. He held Xie Lian’s hand all through the walk, but then he shakes Xie Lian’s hand off the next time they meet? Yeah, he’s scared he’s gonna explode into butterflies again and that would Not Be Cool and Ruin His Image he’s curating for Xie Lian as this cool reliable guy he can come to for help and depend on.

headcanon that throughout the 800 years, xie lian would just talk to ruoye. like all the time. villagers would think he was insane sometimes cause it just looked like he was talking to himself. when they were alone ruoye would talk back, doing some weird version of sign language that only xie lian understands. then after his 3rd ascension, he starts talking to ruoye when hes on some mission, and feng xin and mu qing are like "who are you talking to" and he just lifts up his arm and ruoye pops out a little and xie lian is like "him ! :)" and then ruoye starts talking back and fengqing is just making confused sounds in the corner cause this ribbon is just floating around and making shapes and xie lian is like "oh youre right we should do that !!"

forever obsessed with the way hua cheng didn’t really intend to enter xie lian’s life. he just wanted to see him. check on him. was pleasantly surprised to have such a nice chat. i get the feeling that he just wanted to make true on the promise he made as a wisp—“I want to protect them. […] then I won’t let them know I’m protecting them either.”

then when they arrived at puqi shrine, he had every intention of leaving—he already did everything he intended to. it’s xie lian who invites him in and asks him to stay at the shrine.

Been thinking about how it was a drought that started the downfall of Xianle. About how when Xie Lian descended he used the Rain Master's hat to make it rain where the drought hit the worse--Lang-er Bay--and how he kept doing so even after the fighting started. About how Xie Lian insisted on doing so even when it drained so much power to run around like that and no one even knew he was doing it. He kept trying to make it rain, but a hat can only hold so much water. It could only make a light trickle for a short time before he needed to run to get more water to bring. Thinking about his own downfall, the chain of events and how he couldn't keep making it rain after some time, stretched too thin.

Thinking about how, after his banishment, Xie Lian chose Lang-er Bay to lie in to give the people one last chance. How on the last day it started raining. Heavy. A downpour so heavy that that man with the rice couldn't even see Xie Lian in the road until he sat up and tripped over him. How that man gave Xie Lian his bamboo hat, the same type of hat that Xie Lian used to bring rain to this very place, to shield him from the rain.

Something something Xie Lian's downfall started with a drought, and was brought back from the brink by the rain in the same place it all started.
