A way too serious reading on Fire in the Sky focusing on Skyfire

The first impression we have of Skyfire is Starscreams vision of him. He says they were close friends before the war. Skyfire is portrayed as a representation of innocence, he is the last cybertronian to know what life was like before the war, and untouched by the horrors of it. When the actual Skyfire is revived, he is in the future in the middle of a war, where for him, he was just a while ago he was a civilian scientist. He knows that this isn’t Cybertron, subconsciously or not, he is essentially trapped with the Decepticons, and with Starscream, who despite saying they are close friends, Skyfire treats Starscream more like an acquaintance. However, Starscream is the only thing that he has left from his old life, so he would naturally stick with him

 It doesn’t take long for Starscream to establish control over Skyfire. Starscream who not only has a ranking superiority over Skyfire, but in life experience. He is 5 million years older, most of which was spent as a warrior, and as the second in command. He tells him that he will make Skyfire his second in command once he takes over. Skyfire thanks him, telling him that he will give Starscream credit. It makes you wonder if this is what their relationship was like before the war, if Starscream believes that being close friends means that someone is willing to be subservient to you.

Then his first encounter with the Autobots. This is where Skyfire is alone, and you can see his actual personality, albeit still under the manipulations of the Decepticons. They engage in combat but stop when Spike and Sparkplug are in danger. When Skyfire goes over to help them, he speaks very softly for the first time since his reactivation. A gentleness for organisms that shows his true calling as a scientist. He then tells them the lies that he was told, showing he does genuinely believe in what Megatron and Starscream told him, like he looks up to his superiors.

So, when Skyfire raises a protest to the treatment of the humans, Megatron warns him that he’s stepping out of line, but it was Starscream who tightens his leash. not hesitating to shoot his hand as a punishment. Starscream should know how Skyfire should love organics, but maybe he saw this as an opportunity to taint Skyfire even more. Skyfire was shocked but not to Starscream shooting him, but to why they wanted to harm the humans. He does not question being shot by Starscream at all, filling in a picture of them before the war even more. Skyfire had also said that these humans were his friends, despite most of their very brief meetings being the humans terrified of him. This also makes you think if Skyfire before had any real friends other then Starscream.

When cornering a group of Autobots, Starscream said that the years under the ice had diminished his loyalty coefficient. And once again you wonder, ‘how did Starscream treat Skyfire before??’

Even after acknowledging their old friendship, the moment Skyfire refuses Starscream, he once again, does not hesitate to shoot Skyfire for being ‘wrong’, the Autobots look on in horror for Skyfire, Ratchet and Hound even saying something about it before getting destroyed -in Skyfires eyes- by Starscream, who steps on him before walking off. Another display of establishing his control. In the very short time that he’s been reactivated, Starscream has already shot Skyfire twice for miniscule ‘mistakes’ and Skyfire doesn’t even question why he was punished so harshly by being shot, only thinking of others.

Ratchet fixes up Skyfire the best he can after revealing that they are functioning they get interrupted by Starscream who orders his trine to fire at will at the Autobots, not caring that they were fixing up Skyfire. Ratchet doesn’t leave Skyfires side, tugging at his hand and saying ‘I won’t leave you here’ before getting shot. Skyfire stirs, this is probably the kindest anyone has been to him after being frozen and losing everything he knows.

Skyfire does join the battle, on the side of the Autobots, finally seeing a way out from the Decepticon grasp, and literally throws Megatron away. He ends up fighting Starscream, who only a little while ago had such a positive view of Skyfire, is now willing to kill him permanently. It’s almost like he would rather have Skyfire dead then have a Skyfire who is alive, but does not fit the loyal subservient imaginary image he has of him in his mind.

Starscream has far more experience in battle and although they both crash, Starscream will show up next episode, totally fine. However for Skyfire, in his final moments, fires a blast to bury the crystals, and himself to save his new friends. Perhaps that’s all he knows, instead of landing safely, he did everything he could to be useful to the very end. But in doing this he found freedom from Starscream, in death.

does anyone else get so upset when you think about all the things that happened to your f/o... all the things they went through? all the things they haven't healed from? the pain that they may still be enduring? how you can do your best to help them but you can't protect them from everything. so you just love them the ways they needed before, how they deserved. and you see them happy because they finally accept, at least in some ways, that they do deserve it. they deserve love like all beings do

It’s honestly hard to believe that an entire year has gone by since star and I got married. If anything, it’s felt like no time has passed at all. Today is quite bittersweet for me, but it’s so wonderful to see how far the two of us have come and how far we’ll go. Ah, I don’t know what to talk about; there’s just too much to say. He’s my wholly everything—my perfect star. We complement each other. No matter what we’re doing, he makes me feel like my heart’s going to explode. A Thematic Analysis of Chapter 2’s Killer

Drdt spoilers. Obviously

There’s a lot of people who have started liking Ace more since this episode. I am not one of those people. He’s always been my favorite character. I’ve suffered from paranoia as well, and it sucks when people don’t take that shit seriously. Just because it’s irrational doesn’t mean it’s not harmful, and just because it’s stupid doesn’t mean the person suffering from it is stupid. I related to him a lot because of that. His issues are constantly downplayed by the people around him. Either that, or they think he’s irreversibly crazy for fears he can’t really control.

But besides that, I like him because his brain is fun to pick apart. He has so many problems. It’s a genuine shame he’ll never be able to get over them. It’s not the direction I expected his character to go, but it makes a lot of sense.

All that glitters is not gold.

The title made me think that a “good person” would be the killer, but it was Ace, a “bad person.” And his victim was Arei, another “bad person.” The people who died this chapter were the cast’s “worst people,” people who were outcast by everyone else for being bullied. But this chapter also shows their human sides—maybe they were only bad people because they were never given a chance to be good, like Arei. Maybe they were pushed to extremes because nobody treated their problems seriously, like Ace. Meanwhile, the cast’s “good people” are all revealed to be worse than they seemed. That was the thematic reason behind the motive secrets. Some of the others have done things far worse than Arei or Ace.

Nico was someone most of the cast liked. They were never mean to anyone, and they were constantly the victim of Ace’s bullying. They were easy to like, or at least easy to not hate. They quickly formed a bond with Hu (because Hu seeks out people she thinks need her protection). But in this chapter, they tried to kill someone. They admit themselves that it was reprehensible. Nico is a “bad person”.

Hu was supportive of everyone in chapter 1, positioning herself as a motherly figure. She was kind, caring, and helpful. But in chapter 2, she infantilized Nico to the point that she thought they can’t speak for themselves during the trial. She let biases cloud her judgement. She derailed the trial without good reason, because she wanted to be helpful to Nico, even when they weren’t asking for her help. Hu is a “bad person”.

Levi was called a good person by Eden at the start. He’s polite, takes care of other people, and reached out to Ace of all people. But in this chapter, it’s revealed that he did all of that for his own convenience. He doesn’t care about other people. He’s a murderer. He’s a “bad person”.

Levi threatened Ace, making Ace’s paranoia worse. Nico tried to kill Ace, confirming Ace’s idea that he was going to die if he didn’t get himself out of the killing game. Hu defended Nico, confirming Ace’s idea that everyone was against him.

The so-called “bad people” are cursed to die, while the so-called “good people” are shown to have been bad all along.

And isn’t that far more interesting than showing that good people can do bad things, and ending it like that? Now all the so-called “good people” have to live with the fact that their actions led to Arei’s death, without having been Arei’s actual killer. Arei was killed by the cast’s mistreatment, negligence, and trivialization of Ace Markey.

Thematically. Not literally, of course. Ace did that.

But their culpability in Arei and Ace’s deaths, even tangentially, shows in full color the consequences of letting their flaws go unchecked.

And in the context of Nico and Hu specifically, I can’t wait to see how that impacts them in the long run. Chapter 2 was all about facing the darkest sides of some of these characters. So wouldn’t it stand to reason that Ace’s death would influence some of them (like Nico) to examine their actions more closely and try to grow from them?

I can see Nico cutting off their friendship with Hu after this. She refused to acknowledge their fault in the situation. Since Nico is an objective person, I think they’ll understand the part they played in the Ace/Arei situation, and want other people to understand it as well. They won’t want Hu’s misplaced protection anymore.

And for Hu, I have no idea where she’s going after this. After her performance in this trial, where her flaws were pointed out to her by all the other characters, is she going to reflect and change? Or is she going to regress first, especially now that Ace, who she believed to be a villain, actually snapped and killed someone?

A big theme of chapter 2 has been growth. Ace shows the consequences of not growing. He was pushed to murder because of the rest of the cast not confronting their flaws, and he himself committed the murder because he didn’t know how to change.

It’s a bit of a hopeful spin on his death, but I’ll be honest—I’m still majorly bummed out about it. His life has just been terrible and will be terrible until it ends. He’s a horrible person with blood on his hands. He’s a coward and a bully who is hated by everyone. It’s all he’ll ever be, because he’ll die before having the chance to be someone else. Nico, through the sheer coincidence of having their murder interrupted, will be able to grow and change. Ace never will. A terrible life and a terrible death for a terrible person. And he won’t be missed. Not like Arei. Not like Min. Not like Xander. People like Nico, Rose, and Eden may feel bad about it, but no one will miss Ace specifically, because no one likes him.

If you were able to change and become a better person, it only means you were a good person to begin with.

If you weren’t able to change, it means you were doomed from the start. There’s no use trying.

There’s another world where people took Ace’s fears seriously. Where they didn’t dismiss him as a joke at the start and a volatile dog at the end. He might’ve survived if that happened. No matter what David says, bad people can change, if they know how to do it.

When this chapter finishes, I might make a full thematic analysis of it. There are still a bunch of things to say. I’ll just leave this post off with: Nico survivor stocks going up! Invest now!

Tim going “oh Dick is my favorite Robin actually” and Jason being in genuine distress and feels his heart break and a lump form. It’s not like he should be Tim’s favorite- not after the tower.

Jason doesn’t hear the part where Tim goes “I just mentally outgrew the ‘Robin magic’ earlier than normal because of the way I grew up. Jason was still my Robin growing up but Dick was my magic Robin. So I guess they are both my favorite- but if had to give an answer, it would be Dick only cause I got to experience the magic part with him.”

Because, well, Jason is TIM’s Robin. Jason’s Robin was running around and saving the night when Tim was the age when Robin means the most to you. And, again, the magic part was gone, but god was J!Robin Tim’s.

Or

“Oh Jason was 100%. Jason was my Robin growing up.”

And Jason’s heart drops to his stomach because he doesn’t deserve that. He almost killed the kid. Hell, if Tim would have fought back that day, he would have.

Jason should be the farthest thing from Tim’s favorite. He should be below the last.

“While I didn’t experience the magic with him, I could still feel his energy and enthusiasm and whatever when he was Robin. He made me, a dumbass 8 year old, feel safe to run around and take pictures. Sure, Dick did, but I was a little too young to feel the safety part of it.” Is what Jason doesn’t hear.

Just Jason not knowing/feeling worthy that he is Tim’s favorite Robin.

Although painful to watch, it felt incredibly validating. It was so annoying watching some people say this show was “only about class” while dismissing the BS that Simon had to go through. The abuse was ten fold because he’s POC and S3 finally exposed that.

That being said, and on a more positive note, it was so incredibly sexy when Simon sang happy birthday to Wille in Spanish (he feels safe with him!) and when Wille admitted to fantasizing about stroking those beautiful curlssss (and then actually did it). 🥹❤️‍🩹

do you guys ever think about how in third life grian and scars love actually felt like love in regards to other seasons? how they would dance with eachother in the desert and make eachother flower crowns, embroidering lilacs and poppies on each others clothes, holding hands, killing for eachother- actually killing eachother.

how by last life grian wanted nothing but a break from scar. wanted nothing to do with scar. flat out forgot about him and only interacted with him when he needed something while scar was still infatuated with grian. still holding onto the same cactus flower he gave him in his pocket, months after it had already wilted away

how in double life was the perfect opportunity for them to interact with eachother again, finally after a whole season of being separated they could make up again only for scar to realize it wasn't the business that made them drift apart. it was grian, not wanting anything to do with him anymore. it was grian getting tired of him, letting go of the love he had for him and throwing it away while scar held onto it until his hands became red and sore. scar never wanted to stop loving him but grian never wanted to love him to being with.

how grian cheated on him, lied to him, ignored him, had little to no trust in him. only showed any actual care about him because they shared health, he wouldn't have even batted an eye if they didn't. and scar only stayed because he didn't know how to live without loving him. only stayed with a man that ignored and cheated on him because he didn't wanna be alone- he didn't know how to be alone without destroying himself in the process

but how limited life was different. limited life was the season scar finally learned how to let go of grian and focus on people that actually give a damn about him. and when he finally started doing that he finally learned what it was like to actually be loved. not just appreciated, not just wanted but actually loved- he died with the comfortable yet cryptic feeling of not loving him anymore

then secret life comes around and he's finally content without being codependent on grian. without having to know his input or opinion on what he's doing he's fallen out of love and he's okay with that. he's okay with throwing away the wilted lilacs and poppies hes kept in his pockets after all this time. he's finally okay with not having him and once he is grian isn't. he's asking him to team up, something that's never ever happened before. he notices the dead flowers in his hair and stray sand on his clothes. he's gone back, he never left the desert and scar doesn't wanna admit it but he has. but once he won, he was alone again. right when he was okay with it he got it. being alone for an entire year (it's canon you guys. you guys it's canon and it HURTS :((() but being alone for an entire year makes him reflect obviously. it makes him think about how everyone just walks all over him and how he just lets it happen without doing anything about it. it makes him think about how much actually misses the desert. he can't help but despise what grian did but god does he miss him

AND THEN WILD LIFE????? HUH???? what the hell do you mean grian is trying to get a monopoly on sand. you mean scar? the one that started monopolies in the first place? no he's busy having a monopoly on a green plant with his blond, british, bird friend while living on a mountain. his ass not only went back to the desert he fucking ran back to the desert once he heard word of grian being there. he's okay with being alone but if he had the chance, he'd go back to season one.

I love how Plague Doctor #40 brought this nostalgia into Serovolk's conversation. They look at each other with such docility and remember when they were younger and went to this cafe, but more than that, I love how Sergey's current hair reminds them of their youth and that's why this dialogue brings this affection and nostalgia.
