So why Amalthea?
:3 you've triggered my special interest
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the lady amalthea is the human form of the last unicorn (book by peter s. beagle) - transformed against her will to protect her from the firey red bull, a beast that hunted unicorns to captivity for the horrible king haggard. a king incapable of happiness, except when he looked upon the most beautiful monsters in the world.
the lady amalthea was a woman who used to be immortal. the most beautiful monster, timeless and wise, forced into a mortal body. a body that rots around her, forced to age, forced to empathize, forced to experience love, pain, and sorrow which she previously was incapable of feeling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
as a unicorn she was incapable of regret, guilt, love, or empathy - just like the rest of her kind. but as a human, she learned all of those things. she fell in love, she began losing herself and wanting a life as the princess of a heroic prince - which she could've had.
Tumblr media
by the time she was finally transformed back into a unicorn, having completed her quest to save the others of her kind, the damage was done. now she was a creature unlike any other. an immortal being who experienced that which she never should have. it was to protect her, but in the process she became the loneliest monster in the world. her quest was to save the others like her, and in the process she lost herself and became something new. something that nothing in the world could ever understand.
as a unicorn, she wasn't the lady amathea anymore. that name was given to a human girl who was in love with a human prince. but the girl was part of her now, forever holding a grave in her heart.
Tumblr media
the last unicorn is a story about an immortal monster, the most beautiful being in the world, losing everything in the pursuit of not being alone. she would've lived her life as she always had and always will, if she never learned about the other unicorns being captured. she was alone, enjoying watching lives come and go in all their messiness and love. she could've stayed that way forever, without care, because she knew there were others like her in the world. but when she heard she was the last one in the wild, she had to find them. in the process of that, she completely loses herself.
the last unicorn is seen as a fun fantasy, but in reality, it's a beautiful tragedy. ergo, @amaltheas-anguish

made a visual bingo sheet for doing @batmanisagatewaydrug 's 2025 book bingo since my memory is a lot better with images + I'm not a person who remembers or pays a lot of mind to genres so I'd just forget anyhow B)
also, a few of my friends and i are doing this book bingo together in my server, if any of my moots want to join in!
book titles & my reason for choosing them under the cut:
Literary Fiction: If We Were Villains - M.L. Rio (blind pick from storygraph)
Short Story Collection: The Collected Short Stories of Roald Dahl - Roald Dahl (roald dahl is on this list already so i figured i'd read some of his other stuff, too!)
Sequel: Two Hearts & The Way Home - Peter S. Beagle (sequels-ish to the last unicorn which is one of my top fav pieces of media of all time I NEEEED THESE)
Reread a childhood favorite: Matilda - Roald Dahl (LOVE THIS BOOK & MOVIE SO MUCH!!!)
20th century speculative fiction: The Left Hand of Darkness - Ursula K. Le Guin (i've been trying and failing to read Wizard of Earthsea due to lack of time + its juvenile tone so hoping i can find something i like in this book instead!)
Fantasy: Iron Widow - Xiran Jay Zhao (been on my TBR forever and finally have an excuse to prioritize it)
Published before 1950: The Phantom of the Opera - Gaston Leroux (ALSO been on my TBR forever, attempted to read it once via audiobook but the audiobook reader was so bad at reading that i had to put it down. hopefully my library has a print copy!!)
Indie Publisher: Those We Do Not See - Angie Gallion (looked on the list that the tumblr post recommended, ended up at red adept publishing and blind picked)
Graphic Novel/Comic Book/Manga: Dragon Quest - Adventure of Dai (recommended to me by luca! he first recommended dragonball to me and i had to decline because that's is SO many chapters FHSJDFKL)
Animal on the Cover: The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World - Robin Wall Kimmerer (obsessed with all of kimmerer's works and need to read them all NOOOWWWWWW)
Set in a Country You Have Never Visited: The Fox Wife - Yangsze Choo (this was recommended to me right before i left kansas by the person who did my hair so it's only been on my TBR a short while, but i'm always super eager to read books that were personally recommended to me!!)
Science Fiction: Time Shards - David Fitzgerald, Dana Fredsti (was on my TBR in storygraph, i don't remember adding this so it might as well be a blind pick FHKSJDHF)
2025 Debut Author: The Woman In The Wallpaper - Lora Jones (blind pick!)
Memoir: Leading Lady: A Memoir of a Most Unusual Boy - Charles Busch (recommended to me by my coworker at my old job who was an elderly gay man who spent his life in theatre, extra excited to read this one!!)
Essay Collection: Fanged Noumena: Collected Writings 1987-2007 - Nick Land (on my storygraph TBR, i think i saw some quotes from a tumblr post and added it?? i THINK)
2024 Award Winner: Dance with Me - Georgia Beers (blind picked from the Lambda Literary Awards since they focus on LGBT+ works!)
Nonfiction: Conflict Is Not Abuse: Overstating Harm, Community Responsibility, and the Duty of Repair - Sarah Schulman (recommendation from a tumblr account i follow for book recs on activism and mental health)
Activism/SJ: Revolting Prostitutes: The Fight for Sex Workers' Rights - Molly Smith, Juno Mac (same as above!)
Romance Novel: Norwegian Wood - Haruki Murakami (was on my storygraph TBR)
Horror: Annihilation - Jeff VanderMeer (i am vaguely aware that the movie version of this book is dogshit and i've heard the book is LEAGUES better so i want to take a peek for myself)
Published in 2000-2009: Reading Like a Writer: A Guide for People Who Love Books and for Those Who Want to Write Them - Francine Prose (ohhh i added this to my tbr recently-ish but i don't remember where i found it, i am SUPER interested in this though as both a writer and an avid reader!)
Historical Fiction: Babel - R.F. Kuang (blind pic, partially influenced by the fact that luca brings up the tower of babel so often that we have a spiritual "mentioning tower of babel" jar in place)
all i need now is the library rec (i'll be moving in walking distance from a library in a couple weeks), the read & make a zine (i'll poke around archive.org to find some interesting ones & potentially want to make one myself about my old cat who passed) and read & make a recipe (i cook at home rather than eat out most of the time so this is gonna happen prolly within like a week of 2025 anyways)

The Last Unicorn (1982) and Tales From Earthsea (2006) are foundational nonhuman movies to me, and I want to talk about them, because they mean a lot to me.
The entire story of The Last Unicorn's unicorn being turned human by Schmendrick, and feeling so much grief for her true form, while also slowly losing who she was and becoming someone entirely different, is so profound to me, and I don't see people talk much about it. That to me is nonhuman media, straight up. It's become more profound as I've aged and picked up on the themes better, though it was still one of my favorite movies as a child. I relate now to the unicorn's sense of duty to her forest, as well as her sortof lesser divine nature. Not a god really. More a spirit; something powerful and special, borne from and tied to the Earth to watch over some of its other creations. Like her, I am something powerful, with an air of something just beyond full human understanding, but not unearthly.
Tales From Earthsea is very different from the books it's based on, which is why a lot of people disliked it, but I thought the detail of people whose spirits were truly free becoming dragons was a fantastic addition. It's my favorite part of the movie. It gave me hope as a child, and speaks to me deeply now. I felt when I was younger that if I wanted for it enough, and believed it to be possible, that I may one day wake up as a dragon, and fly off to find a place I could call my own.
I also really loved werewolf media. I read a lot, and many werewolf movies are horror (which meant I wasn't allowed to watch them until I was older), so most of the werewolf stuff I liked took that form. Wereworld, Wolven, a few Goosebumps books, plus some nonfictional books about the history of werewolves were all things I enjoyed. I wanted to be a werewolf for a while, so much so that I believed I could become one. Though I think a lot of that was the deep wishing that I could transform into something nonhuman. I don't connect well with canines nowadays.
I think I have transformed in a way. I've shifted from wanting to be a dragon, to internally being fully draconic. My soul itself, if such a thing exists, is fully a dragon. And yet it's crammed into this human body. I've transformed, my body just hasn't caught up.
Anyway. Do y'all have media you think captures your nonhumanity closely? And, are there any nonhumans who'd want recommendations for media representing their species identity? I've seen and read a lot over the years (lots of werewolves, some cats, couple mermaids/sirens, various birds, fairies, dragons, horses, robots/AI, etc), so I may be able to give decent suggestions.

Sooooo you have an original story you’re working on?? 👀
I'm glad you asked!
Yes, I do! A whole series in fact. Not sure what the overarching title is gonna be, if there is one, but I usually just call it the Hywel Universe. I even have a side blog for it! @hyweluniverse
It's mostly just reblogs of things that remind me of the characters, but you'll find a few mood boards and excerpts there too!
Gonna try not to infodump too much, but my gosh I love talking abt this story and its characters. They're my babies!
It first started when I saw a piece from a 1983 art book by Hayao Miyazaki.
Tumblr media
When I saw it, I got a surge of inspiration to write a story about a boy finding a mermaid in a place she normally wouldn't be. That idea became the first book, Hywel and the Mermaid! I've been working on it since freshman or sophomore year of high school and I have the first manuscript done, but it's far too short at the moment, so it's still a work-in-progress!
It's about Hywel Annesly, a thirteen-year-old Welsh printmaker's apprentice who finds a mermaid his age named Runa hidden in a room above his workplace, and he promises to get her back to the ocean she was captured from.
I went in wanting Hywel and Runa's story to be like something from Ghibli (esp Castle in the Sky, my favorite movie ever), but honestly, Hywel and Runa's relationship is more like Jen and Kira's than anything! When writing this story, I take inspiration from many things, esp the books I read as well as movie like The Last Unicorn and others by Ghibli, Jim Henson, and Don Bluth, for example.
The rest of the series follows the lives of the Annesly family as it branches out into other families, from the first book in 1909 to the current last book in 1983. So far the other books are Hywel and the Griffin's Feather (1911, Hywel returning a magic feather that was stolen from a griffin so the griffin can have its powers back), Anita and the Werewolf (1967, a werewolf girl going abroad for college and learning to love the lycanthropic side of herself thanks to meeting Hywel's nephew, Connell), Nico and the Manhattan Manticore (1969, Anita's younger brother struggling to deal with all the changes in his life, and bonding with a captured manticore named Kian along the way), Lonely Jim and the Myth-Protectors (1920s to 1950s-60s, the backstory of Connell's older brother), and Stella and the Skriker (1983, a detective investigating mysterious murders in New York City and reluctantly enlisting Nico's help).

What's your favorite story? Can be a book, movie, game, whatever tickles your fancy! 😄
My favorite book is Dracula. I've read it a good four times which with my attention span is unheard of. I still feel the suspense every time I read it even though I know what happens.
My favorite movie is The Last Unicorn. I'm aware it's also a book, but it isn't my favorite book. The film is elevated by its visuals. The art style is impeccable and so are all the voice actor performances. It's pretty faithful to the book as well. (My second favorite film actually is a Dracula adaptation, Nosferatu, the 80s version with Klaus Kinski; so you can see there is some overlap in this category of favorites lol)
I don't actually play a lot of video games but I do like the plot of Red Dead 2. The whole game is a big question of "if the hero dies at the end anyway, does it matter that he left his old ways and tried to be good if the outcome is the same (yes it does matter)" It's also a love letter to the best parts of America (its diversity, the wide spectrum of culture, natural beauty and wildlife) while at the same time being a stark condemnation of its multitude of sins. Mostly I love a good redemption arc.

4 5 6 9 12 14 18 19 20 21 22 24 25 and 26 (freebie: favourite h/c or whump headcanons because I’m a Fiend) for Boromir, Faramir, Éomer, and Théodred >:)
ALSO SIR PLEASE STOP DOING HELLA FUCKIN EDIBLES TOO FAST 😭🤣 I WORRY
SKSDHJFKJSDJ TYYYYY
Boromir—
4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?
UM. ok this is so fucking. this is SO DUMB but 1) Boromir is just inextricably tied to fantasy to me sorry BUT. im sticking him in The Sword and the Sorcerer bc i think if ANYONE deserves to get to mess around with a three-bladed magic rocket sword its Boromir
5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?
Shock Me! by Baroness
6. What's something you have in common with this character?
loyalty :3 also bad at quantifying my own emotions sdkjhfsdkjf
9. Could you be roommates with this character?
YE. i think i could totally be roommates w/ him
12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?
Boromir struggling with self harm impulses was sth that just kinda came up naturally in one fic + then got expanded on and now its. a very important hc to me actually, as some1 who also struggles w that
14. Assign a fashion aesthetic to this character.
HRM. this feels like a cop-out answer but truly from the depths of my heart i think modern AU Boromir just dresses like Sean Bean. he'd just dress like a dad
18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?
Boromir&Faramir sibling relationship is Everything to me forever + ever
19. How about a relationship they have in canon that you don't like?
huh. idk? i think all the relationships he has are interesting so there's no specific relationship that's bad on a fundamental level. like i think Denethor is a shit parent and i do not think he and Boromir have a GOOD relationship. but it IS narratively interesting
20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?
HM. like Merry and Pippin obviously but also i do think he and Éowyn would get on like a house on fire if they got to meet.
21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?
hmmmm i like putting him in situations where hes Loved. my Boromir/Théodred/Aragorn fic is one of my favs just bc i like Spoiling Boromir. he deserves to be spoiled sdjkfhsjk
i dont.. Know that theres anything i dont like abt writing him??? hes very cathartic to write
22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to ths character? Something you don't like?
same answer as above pretty much :3 i love when hes treated with tenderness and love by the narrative
+ ive bitched abt this before but fics that just make him a brute are the woooooooooorrrssst. like. thats. thats so antithetical to even the most BASIC reading of his character. worsties how do u get him THAT wrong???
24. What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?
HM. HRM. idk :3 hes very special 2 me like he is THEE comfort character rn so idk anyone else off th top of my head where im like oh theyre Like Boromir
25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?
i did not care abt Boromir when i was a child first getting into LotR. Sighs. i was a legolas + merry/pippin stan. NOW he is thee singular guy of all time forever. i wld die 2 defend him <33
26. FREEBIE QUESTION!! — favourite h/c or whump headcanons?
ok kinda already answered in 12 but i do love any fic exploring how Boromir reacts when like. it sinks in tht he doesn't have to shove everything aside to be this unbreakable pillar of strength. u know
Faramir—
4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?
oh easy. The Last Unicorn. like again sorry ik its fantasy still but theres such a quiet melancholy to that story, and so much love and care.. I think Faramir would fit right in
5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?
Living Pyre by Khemmis
6. What's something you have in common with this character?
far too willing to sacrifice ourselves in search of approval

ye :3
12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?
he's so autistic. to me <3333333
14. Assign a fashion aesthetic to this character.
i feel like he wld rlly like corduroy. modern au i think he'd still lean fantasy-inspired for his fashion sense
18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?
Faramir&Aragorn and Faramir&Pippin friendships ilyyyyy
19. How about a relationship they have in canon that you don't like?
same answer as Boromir skjhfskjdf
20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?
Aragorn!! autism2autism communication
21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?
Faramir is so versatile w/ writing skjdfhskj i love him for angst, i love him for fluff... guy of all time (he deserves so many hugs)
he's very introspective so character studies are also very fun w/ him
(nothin i dislike wrt writing for him)
22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to ths character? Something you don't like?
sth i like? love reading character study moments w him as much as i like writing them :3
dislike? woobification. he's an extremely capable soldier in his own right and captain of Ithilien's rangers. he does not need to be Babied
24. What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?
ties in2 my answer for four but the Lady Amalthea from The Last Unicorn actually. like again idk Faramir is so autistic-coded And trans To Me and just. yeagh. ethereal otherworldly magical creature trapped in a body that is fundamentally wrong + suddenly dealing w/ people who expect things of her that she just doesn't comprehend/expect certain reactions she cannot/does not give.
and her growing to love Lír because Lír takes the time to learn how to woo her in ways that truly work for her (instead of the ways princes are Supposed To woo their loves).
i think if Faramir got to watch/read The Last Unicorn it would rewire his brain love + light
25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?
again i never rlly thought much abt him originally. now tho? [aragorn kinnie voice] thats my whole entire little brother
26. FREEBIE QUESTION!! — favourite h/c or whump headcanons?
HRM. i think he does wind up with burns on his torso/arms at Least. at least. i do like the tenderness of him letting Éomer help look after the scarring
Éomer—
4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?
ummmm not so much sth i would put him in but i do think he should be allowed to marathon the Fast & Furious movies while intoxicated. fast cars hunky guys ridiculous stunts, 10/10 extremely fun
5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?
HM. ok this is like. in the context of Éomer/Faramir but Ride On by Cruachan
also Hulde Aan De Kastelein by Heidevolk
6. What's something you have in common with this character?
HRMGH. big fan of horses
9. Could you be roommates with this character?
uhhhhh yea?? maybe?? I feel like we might butt heads a little but not too bad
12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?
he’s nonbinary to me :3
at some point I’ll continue that post expanding on th theoretical overlap between Iron Age Norse conceptions of gender/mysticism and Rohan. but he is nonbinary To Me
14. Assign a fashion aesthetic to this character.
farmer fashion lmao. again modern au Éomer is like. jeans work shirts boots etc. purely practical clothing + 100% has a farmer’s tan
18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?
I love his relationship with Éowyn like I do love sibling relationships so much. also really love his relationship with all of the Three Hunters like they’re so funny together
19. How about a relationship they have in canon that you don't like?
same answer!! nothin I really dislike bc even his negative relationships are super interesting
20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?
i genuinely really enjoy his + Gimli's banter i think they should get to be Actual Friends. that wld be a really fun dynamic i think
21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?
again idk anything super specific?? soz skjhfsjk i feel like im giving lame answers but i will say i do think its very funny that every time ive written a sex scene with Éomer its been outdoors. no beds for that Rohir
22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to ths character? Something you don't like?
hmmmm im a weak bitch for Éomer/Faramir fluff fics :3
for dislikes— similar vein to Boromir but fics that make him a brute or treat him like hes stupid. feels weird besties
24. What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?
HM. i feel like i Should have an answer for this but i dont -_-;; th brain has been on 24/7 LotR lockdown for. So Long now. so i try to conjure other characters n my mind goes Blessedly Blank
25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?
look man. look when i first read lord of the rings all the way through, i was a weird trans autistic teen dealing with chronic depression and such a massive disconnect from humanity i was fully convinced i was a changeling. i was NOT paying attention to the Men in these books i was paying attention to one (1) elf and two (2) hobbits
impression of him now is [kinnie voice] brother in law :]
26. FREEBIE QUESTION!! — favourite h/c or whump headcanons?
touched on this briefly in one fic but i do think Éomer falls into a similar trap as Boromir where its like. "why should i bother Processing Emotions when i could kill 20-30 orcs instead. i will certainly not regret killing 20-30 orcs. wdym 'how am I feeling?'"
sth sth sth throwing himself recklessly into battle to combat crippling feelings of uselessness bc his cousin/practically his older brother is on his deathbed, his uncle is close behind and he's been exiled from his homeland, leaving his sister in the clutches of a skeezy little slimeball. getting hurt + not having the injury properly seen to until After bc, you know, he's got 20-30 Orcs To Kill
(don't be like Éomer. take care of yourself)
Théodred—
4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?
idk how much this counts but i wrote a fic retelling the story of Aran + Asmund with Boromir + Théodred, so that :3
5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?
ok well i feel like Théo is such a blank slate character with how little we know of him in canon that i can't give as solid an answer, but I'll drop the songs I've used to title Théo-centric fics:
Shine by Baroness (Boromir/Théodred)
Blot by Månegarm (Boromir/Théodred/Aragorn) < this one fits my personal vibes for him extremely well
+ technically, My Mother Told Me (Théodred&Éomer&Éowyn)
6. What's something you have in common with this character?
Big Sibling w/ two younger siblings sdkfhd
9. Could you be roommates with this character?
ye!! we could vibe i think
12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?
Well Again, I Think Théo Is An Extremely Blank Slate. BUT Théo being trans is deeply deeply important to me
14. Assign a fashion aesthetic to this character.
modern au Théodred dresses practically when he needs to but otherwise very cozy. hygge is real and he Is embodying it
18. How about a relationship they have in canon with another character that you admire?
sth sth i feel repetitive im sorryyyyyyy but his sibling relationship w/ Éomer + Éowyn is SO important to meeeeeeeeee
19. How about a relationship they have in canon that you don't like?
Same Answer As Everyone Else lol
20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?
BOROMIR. like i think they were more than best friends (wink) but also they are just. Best Friends. the basis for every lasting healthy relationship
21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?
he's very lighthearted 2 write. i love writing silly lil romantic fics w/ him. nothin i particularly dislike sjnjsfd
22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to ths character? Something you don't like?
i havent actually read any Théo fics other than the ones i wrote sorryyyyyyy sdnfsjdfhk
24. What other character from another fandom of yours that reminds you of them?
i think i have actually pulled some of my voice for him from Lír in The Last Unicorn and Taran in the later books from the Chronicles of Prydain, so there u go :3
25. What was your first impression of this character? How about now?
Forgot He Existed. now i have a big soft spot for him lol
26. FREEBIE QUESTION!! — favourite h/c or whump headcanons?
ok this was sth i totally misremembered based solely off of the supremely excellent skeeziness of Brad Dourif's performance and just the way he says "oh.... he must have died sometime in the night" when he visits Éowyn while she grieves... anyways i think that could easily be read as Gríma having sabotaged Théodred's recovery

I was tagged by the lovely @keldjinfae and asked to list my top 10 movies. It's always a struggle to pick a top ten, but here are my current top ten in no particular order.
Sliding Doors - Fantastic movie with a great soundtrack. I love the way it explores the ideas of parallel universes and the what ifs around our daily choices and experiences. It's just so damn good.
Spirited Away - I'm a huge Alice in Wonderland fan and this has very similar vibes. It's also so much more than a trip through a strange world. It's a story of growing up, of loss, of finding yourself, and figuring out who you are. Miyasaki's films are always so beautiful, but this remains one of my all time favorites out of his works.
The Princess Bride - there are very few perfect movies out there, and this happens to be one of them in my mind. It's a wonderful blend of romance, humor, adventure, whimsy, and fantasy.
The Last Unicorn - while the Red Bull terrified me the first time I saw this as a kid, the movie itself remains one of my all time favorites. The art is gorgeous, the soundtrack so beautiful and fitting, and the story is such a good one.
Lilo and Stitch - this is just such a great movie. As someone who was a weird little child, Lilo resonated deeply with me. And the whole theme of family, both blood and chosen, gets me every time.
Star Wars (the original trilogy) - I enjoyed the prequels and sequels well enough, but it's the original three that remain my favorites. Such a huge part of my childhood and just so much fun.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy - these were such a love letter to the books and it shows in ever aspect. The cast was perfectly chosen, the locations were amazing, the set, costume design, special effects, and soundtrack were all crafted just right to suit the film and the story. Like the books, it is a powerful story and in some ways I think the movie version hits a bit harder. I still love the books, but I love the movies just as much.
Tucker and Dale vs. Evil - I tend towards comedy-horror and dark comedy over pure horror in general. This one is both an amazing horror film and a great comedy. It's also a very sweet story in a lot of ways. My all time favorite thing about it is that it turns the whole scary redneck/hillbilly/country folk think on its head. As someone who grew up in the rural south and whose kin are very much country folk, I really appreciated that aspect a whole hell of a lot.
Atlantis: The Lost Empire - I tried to avoid listing too many Disney movies, but this one is such an underrated Disney film. Cute archeology/history nerd plus band of misfits plus otherworldly and amazing woman plus well done villains and a great adventure backdrop just make this just a fun film. If you've never seen it, I highly recommend giving it a chance.
The Martian - this goddamn movie makes me cry over potatoes. That said, it's a great film filled with science, snappy jokes, heartwrenching scenes, and a fabulous cast. Plus Sean Bean gets to live! And he gets to explain a LoTR reference, which always delights me.

PEOPLE I'D LIKE TO GET TO KNOW BETTER .
Tumblr media
alias / name: jay, jaz, j-dawg, jj, the whole she-bang
birthday:  oct. 29
zodiac sign: scorpio
height: 5'5"
hobbies: video games, writing, art but its a hate-love relationship, and reading. love graphic novels, literature, comics, etc.
favorite color: purple
favorite book: song of achilles is a classic. i think about the writing in it all the time. my friend got me the six of crows trilogy for my birthday a couple years ago, loved that too. love the way cloud atlas is laid out. the night circus is one of my old-time faves too.
last song: inside · chris avantgarde
last film / show: finally watched the menu. it was a good watch.
recent reads: haven't sat down to read a book in a minute ... but i've been meaning to reread the last unicorn (another favorite lol)
inspiration: poetry is what i always come back to. when i write, it's really important how things flow / sound in my head, and i'll re-edit sentences over and over to get that sort of "sound" across. poetry does this the best. i always listen to music too, which gets me into the mood. books and fanfic and movies that make me think or inspire me also help, but rping for me a lot comes down to my writing partners. it's all a hoax to get people to write for me. i sit down and reread my partners' responses 4-5 times usually to make sure i didn't miss a single thing.
story behind url: frankly trying to come up with urls irritates me (im not very creative in that sense) so i just fucked around with her name until it wasn't taken lmao
fun fact about me: my second cousin is trent reznor from the nine inch nails. all of my friends call him "dear cousin trent". i don't have any actual contact with him because my family is a mess, but it's always a funny thing to bring up.

hi hi hi!!! So sorry if this is weird but im genuinely overjoyed that you liked the last unicorn so much!!!! It's one of my favorite films I love the score and the animation is SO pretty and Molly's "how DARE you" gets me Every Time. The book is very good too (more drama surrounding Haggard's downfall)!!! The story is so interesting to me and it's definitely a favorite in my family (alas, none of my friends seem to know it :[ ). Also!! https://youtu.be/M57VN_b9FRM is an incredible video about the film and its legacy!!!!!! I hope you have a good one!!!!
<3 <3 What a lovely sweet message! I look forward to watching that video, thank you! That is exactly the kind of content I love to watch!!
Molly's "how DARE you" is possibly my favorite moment in the whole book!!! <3 <3 <3 - It was the moment when I was going through the story where it like, truly slapped me in the face and went This Is Something Extremely Special And Rare Which You Have found.
Literally, the second Molly was first onscreen (I watched the movie first), I said out loud to no one, "Well, clearly this is the most interesting character in the movie, but she is an ordinary-looking middle-aged woman, and so of COURSE the narrative won't give this character her due." - AND THEN SHE JOINED THE PARTY AND BECAME A MAIN CHARACTER!!!! I was over the fucking moon!!! :D
Also, Christopher Lee as King Haggard? Be still my heart! What wonderful work!!!!

About the Blogger Ask Meme
tagged by inimitable, resplendent @exlibrisfangirl
Favorite Color?
I'm a sucker for jewel tones, of any kind. My hair is currently mermaid adjacent, with some magenta-pink, teal, teal-blue, blue-purple all kinda up in there. If you're interested? Unicorn was the brand I used. Semi-permanent, layers well. Very pigmented, so you can get intense color by just painting it on your hair, OR blend it in w basic bitch conditioner for a pastel variant.
Favorite Food?
It's hard to choose any one. I've had a lot of realllllly great food in my life, but? A forever fave is definitely gado gado. It's Balinese. Steamed vegetables, tempeh, rice, fried FRESH tofu, served with a flavorful, spicy peanut sauce.
Sweet/Spicy/Savory?
It...depends? Sweet & Spicy? Korean bbq wings. Yes, please. That. Just Spicy? Spicy Miso Ramen, or Thai Curry. The only one that I can't really do is Savory. I'm extremely sensitive to salt.
Last Thing I Googled?
I was double checking the og Buffy series air dates, bc I wanted to check my memory before declaring that yeah, Peter Hale totally would have been the right age demo to be super into it.
Currently Reading?
Endless fic. Nerve pain flare ups in my hands make holding my books unpleasant, sadly. So, I tend to consume fic via primarily podfic. I have too many reccs for this ask, so I'll save that for if anyone asks.
I do read text versions too, but holding my phone can sometimes be a lot when my hands are hurty, so. Before my hands got really bad, though, I was reading my hefty anniversary edition of "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman.
Last Series?
I. Don't want to just say "idk, fic" again, so I'm just gonna use this section to shamelessly recc "The Protector of the Small" series by Tamora Pierce.
Last Movie?
Thor: Love & Thunder.
I was up, wanted to watch something, and am not the type to pan a movie based on movie bros' Strong Opinions tm tm. It was...I mean? Not as good as the last one, but not exactly the world ending failure people were crying about. Christian Bale was a lot, though. A Lot. I'll give them that... they weren't wrong there.
Last Song?
Baby's On Fire (cover) as performed in the movie Velvet Goldmine. It fuckin slaps. It is my entire jam, because I am glam rock trash.
Song Stuck In My Head?
thankfully??? Not a one. I have a brain that hyperfixates. When I let that happen for songs, it will play it on repeat while I'm trying to sleep. So, yeah. I have methods for preventing that.
Something I Want?
For my body to slow its roll on the inflammation train. Ig this is what makes Hashimoto's vs a non autoimmune thyroid disorder ""fun."" When a flare up kicks off, everything goes hog wild. All at once. Like a symphony orchestra of discomfort.
Dream Trip?
Reykjavik, please and thank you. Or the Laplands in Finland. I've been to Bali a few times, and I love it. Costa Rica was beautiful, too. But, like? I just want to be somewhere with polar nights, bc I am weird like that, ig.
Currently Working On?
Self care. I've been doing the caretaker of a caretaker thing for a bit, and my spoons are limited.
Time?
2:38 am (lordT. To bed with me)
So, like. To the tagging others bit...
Sorry babes for being my only tags for a response, but I think everyone else I know has done this or been tagged? No pressure to reply, obvs. I just didn't want to let this die on my doorstep

Saving this to discuss with my animation teacher later, because YEAH THIS IS A NOTICEABLE PROBLEM. And the worst part? A lot of companies/films that try to 'pander' to the group that wants original stuff and who wants more detailed animation and detailed physical effects and good rep and a grounded, logical perspective on anything at all don't get any kind of widespread recognition. Some of the most incredible films I've seen in terms of artistic skill, detail, and grounding have barely been cult classics. We gotta be really really loud about the kind of stuff we enjoy. We gotta share it with eachother and have big, public discussions about it. We can't let examples of the quality of work we're so desperate for fade into the background, because this is how we got here.
Like look at Into the Spiderverse. It's an incredible film in every way, shape, and form, and it was noticed for that. Granted, it can't be considered an original work, and it's made by a very well-known company, but fuck if it isn't a damn good film. And people saw it and noticed it. Very loudly, in fact. And now? We have Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which is a new film in very much the same position as Spiderverse. It's playing up nostalgia for a long dead horse, and is also blatantly trying to ride the success of a VERY successful artsy film. But people love it, because by god at least they're doing something different that what they've been doing for actual decades that feels rich and full of actual effort and color and art.
We got The Last Wish because we loved Spiderverse, and that is our lesson. You want something? Be LOUD about it. They're only stifling themselves because they want to make money and think everybody prefers old works to originals. If we show them that they'll get money from creative and daring films, then we can at least start to get some stuff that mimics love and art and effort.
So now, because I want to encourage everybody to discuss obscure stuff that is the epitome of quality in at least one designated area, I'm gonna give some short rambles about some of my favorite films of all time, beginning with a long rant about my favorite and then descending in no particular order.
MFKZ/Mutafukaz (2017) - fucking stellar animation. Like, beyond anything I've ever seen, coming just short of Spiderverse (and maybe Cartoon Saloon's stuff, though even then, only if you prefer their art style imo). It's so incredibly dynamic and fun, and as a bonus, features The Toxic Avenger and Guillaume Houzé in its soundtrack, which makes for a spunky, techno feel and enhances every bit of action. This instantly became my favorite movie upon watching it for the first time a few years ago. It absolutely has its problems (pacing is way too fast to catch even most of the story on your first watch-through, some portrayals are potentially problematic (though I can't comment on that), and it's a bit of a disaster in terms of the logic of the plot itself). But I don't think that detracts from the pure visual candy this film is.
Birdboy: The Forgotten Children (2015) - similar style and quality of animation to MFKZ, but this time, the plot is much more parsable. It's very dark and nihilistic, but with undercurrents of hope that are oh so important to remember especially in this day and age.
I Lost My Body (2019) - beautiful animation and a wonderfully crafted dark atmosphere.
The Hallow (2015) - best practical effects I've seen in a long, long time.
The Ritual (2017) - a rare example of a book-to-movie adaptation that's better than the book (without the book being shit). Movie stays mostly true to the book, except it adds in complex metaphors for trauma. Also the sound and creature design are both top tier.
Lights Out (2016) - not the best executed horror film, but displays an absolutely terrifying concept.
Buried (2010) - much better executed with an arguably more terrifying concept, since this one is based in reality.
The Last Unicorn (1982) - this movie was my childhood. Stunning animation, and just, so so beautiful in just about every way. I have yet to read the book it was based on.
Annihilation (2018) - fascinating horror/scifi/fantasy film. Features an almost entirely female cast, and some incredible creature, environment, and sound design.
Upgrade (2018) - another horror/scifi movie! I love the soundtrack of this one so much. Plus, it has a really interesting premise!
fucking constant reboot remake reboot remake reboot remake reboot remake!!!!!!!!!! the tv has only been around for like a century you literally cannot be out of ideas already

I am honestly glad monster high is officially been killed...the cgi child like reboot was okay, I didn't have a problem with it at all, it fit the target audience 100%
but the new reboot they're doing is just a woke, satanic - well woke is satanic in its core definition, if your a Christian you'll understand this, for those who don't understand - Satan, lucifer is woke himself. All of the woke hot garbage agenda comes from him, "shocking I know" lol - anyway, back to the topic; they changed possibly more characters personality, changed who they are originally to fit the woke agenda they even changed one or more character sex - to again please the woke sex cult, to be exact...and I honestly believed back in the day till this date..until I found out through reddit fanatics that it has always been a theory including the doll community as well - that it was true that clawdeen is bisexual, and...I forgot the rest lol cause of this ugly as heck live action movie, it was the only reason how I remembered this old news discussion.
But as I stated already it was false, it was made up by the fanatics that desperately wanted to project their personal life styles onto a children's TV show a bunch of adults - don't try to make up excuses that teenagers were the ones that asked for this a lot of times when they weren't, I still remember those early day comments and majority of the children viewing MH were more interested in how the show progressed, who Frankie gonna ditch next, or who she is gonna actually end up with, to making a huge stack of monster high oc - that's what majority of the children that watched MH were focused on, yes I know of the woke parents indoctrinated they're children towards their woke ideologies, that they will be asking for such stuff, however, they weren't as many as the regular child audience.
Nonetheless, it doesn't surprise me that the creator of MH is lgbt, - I found out by the time the lady gaga doll collab released, it hit me right there and then - of course, the books "hinting" it honestly more like treasure hunting hiding it because nick ain't about that life at said time this was occuring, they don't want to get again caught by grooming situation *cough* icarlycreatorandpeopleonnick , but yeah, i can see why they told the groomer - I mean creator for MH to not put that into the children's TV show back in the day...until they broke it off this year with loud house..really terrible show, I believe there may have been a before first lgbt stuff on nick content?? But that's the only one that I believe was the first time they've done that towards going on with there other grooming tactics lol.
Now the gromreator...trying to fuse groom + creator here e.e....not working, creating a monster name hahaha....- had stated on his Instagram that he was just gonna slap all types of grooming(making the entire cast well some of them, lgbt) content originally for MH but nick again didn't want to around said time - they need to rail in those fishes before they do such acts. So knowing that this happened...it sucks cause I love monster high, my first favorite monsti was Frankie stien until I learned about her just being a terrible, cheap dollar teenage whore...yeah...once you realize this- it..it don't look right even if they try to 'fix' it by potentially making her love interest be that unicorn Grey rainbow hair guy - sadly it didn't even last, like jeez they really destroyed her character on the relationship department and back then up until before this entire reboot live thing occurred people despised the heck out of Frankie and now people love her(note; reddit go to r/monsterhigh and scroll past until you find the post about Frankie being none binary - look at the comment section, and I do believe there is another one as well discussing it too) - not kidding, because she is none binary..because of that..they will ditch the real og Frankie- accept..like you're just trying to half butt clean a stain that has been left there for too long mate - it ain't gonna work for those who can see, smell the pandering, and yes they should've created a new character for that instead of grabbing an already existing character which really does fit with draculaura but we shall get to her in a minute, - fairly it doesn't really matter the real Frankie, will always be a skank, and a terrible ghoul nothing that you do will change about this character.
After me accepting that Frankie is like this, I drifted apart from the series, but, I did try my best to keep up with it by rewatching each web episode on their website back in the day. Thanks to me rewatching the episodes my love for drac, blew up - like drac, Gothic Victorian, Lolita cutie pie drac stole me away - I drew all my attention towards her until they gave her a wrong "boyfriend" ..sigh..I had hoped it would be someone else but yeah not into the whole pairing sorry, and clawdeen as well - I fell in love with her she was adorable, sassy and what made me love her even more was the matter of her being into fashion - her story progressing in the France movie was really sweet..but, that's not to state that I didn't like any of her outfits she wore cause boy oh there were times that i just couldn't stand some of the outfits at all she wore. I loved some but others ew.
Now in the live action, as I stated before I would be mentioning said quote i mentioned how they should have created a new character instead of stinking being lazy pieces of poop and taking an already beloved established character..again this a reboot to the series so..it doesn't surprise me but it disgusts me. They already *have* a witch character, so what do they do with draculaura? For those who don't know yet, they swapped her entire characteristic of what she does - just slap the witch gross sticker on her and call it a day..I am not gonna lie that I was upset about it but I already had moved on from it since i know that will never be og draculaura, even though..in the game that I have for MH I find out that she vegan..I forgot about her profile bio it's been so long and my memory ain't well at times, so me realizing it again, is yeah..not into her being vegan like I get it she's trying to avoid blood but she can still eat meat just cooked - i never understood why she couldn't eat cooked meat..- it doesn't have no blood at all lol plus it's coming from animals.. while clawdeen got 0 problems eating meat with the rest of the characters as well as ghoulia being a zombie xD - it just I don't get it.
...With that being stated, I am done here, MH was a good show, it was fine while it lasted for me, now I have since moved on from it..though I will never move on from my favorite ghouls, I already have cut ties with media that has woke imagery in it..that includes og MH it had way too much of it, now the new one is gonna have a ton on blast it's just not my tea anymore, I rather continue following the lord then just engross myself with something that is vile.

im sorry youre feeling bad! i dont know if you've ever talked abt this before but if you HAVENT id love to hear about your favorite movie 🤍
My favourite is a bit hard to fully pin down, but I can definitely give my current top three movies I’m always up to rewatch!
Ravenous: I think I’ve made everyone I’m really close with see it, a few repeatedly. But a surprisingly clever and wildly homoerotic black comedy/horror movie explicitly about white supremacy and colonialism and attempts to oppose those, with a fantastic soundtrack? Always, always up to rewatch.
Is Near Dark necessarily a great movie? Not especially. The protagonist is absolutely, utterly loathsome in every second he’s on the screen. The ending makes me mad every time. It’s still one of my favourites, nonetheless. The central idea of the Western is almost always that of enclosure, of a way of being that’s in its last days and the tension thereof, and it does that so well with the way the murderous vampire drifters are clearly doomed even without the shitty loser dude who joins them. They’re irredeemable in every way except for their genuine fondness for each other and they do it with the sleaziest glamour.
I’m definitely also finding myself Extremely Normal about Only Lovers Left Alive. About the opposite kind of vampire movie, but equally about what it means to exist in a changing world, what’s worth getting up at night for, what it means to have others and care for each other. It’s lovely and stylish and still manages a kind of hope amid crumbling unlives and I like that. Eve is a whole mood.
Honourable mentions: Survive Style 5+, which I think everyone should watch, it’s the most mental-health-improving art I know, The Last Unicorn (though the book is more trans, the movie has Christopher Lee)

He was kind and fascinating and genuinely interested in everyone he spoke with, and an endless fount of anecdotes. When it was my turn, I had him sign two copies of The Last Unicorn--one for myself and one for my niece, who was two years old at the time. He signed her name (Eliza), and when I told him she was named after the main character in My Fair Lady, he told us that he played Colonel Pickering on stage, and sang a bit for us. Such a dear, lovely gentleman. He has my adoration for life. <3
pinkusponkus: #I met him at a showing of his movie and have a print that he signed for me#when he learned my name he sang me Hard-Hearted Hannah#I love him
augustdementhe: #I had the pleasure once#He told me I reminded him of his first girlfriend because she also had a sick ass afro (his sentiment my description)#I need to get the book
ravencromwell: #GOD. god this is just such a magnificent example of#humans being awesome#and yes. yes in a world which so often feels drowned in its own horror. in the refusal to bridge gaps across shared humanity. the refusal#to be kind. it is so fucking important to amplify the good. [I love this thread especially viscerally because it was sparked by one of my#fav authors: Kingfisher is a person whose books are infused with so much kindness and humor.while refusing to look away from the violence.#very much to me following in Beagle's footsteps. and so that she helped make this feels fated and perfect]#queer stuff#Peter S. Beagle#book babbling#lit geekery
alchemyarchetype: #i met him and told him i wanted to be a writer#his response was along the lines of#“then you're a writer!”
bibliomancer7: #He's come to Dragoncon several times#and I go to every panel he's on because he's ALWAYS worth listening to#and his readings; he's an AMAZING reader#and I am deeply sad that the audiobook of him reading The Last Unicorn apparently has rights problems#I would pay SO MUCH money for that
labradorduck #i meet him when he came to Toronto#he was very nice#we were properly warned though that the signing line was long and slow because he is going to tell each and every person a story#and he did
crittymonster: (https://www.tumblr.com/crittymonster/748633483608571904/got-the-chance-to-meet-him-at-a-qa-film-showing?source=share) Got the chance to meet him at a Q&A + film showing at a small, local theater. He was wonderfully witty & very warm with the audience. Glad to hear that's just who he is.
tea42: #i love his writing so much#i met him at a con#his is lovely#he sang to me#charming charming man
khealywu: if you like The Last Unicorn, or Peter S Beagle, i strongly recommend ‘Tamsin’! it’s one of my favorite books.
#definitely one that would have formed min. 45% of my personality if i’d read it as a teenager#instead i read it in my twenties and it formed 13% of my personality#it’s so good#there’s a ghost and the protagonist falls in love with her#after moving to somerset from manhattan#and the wild hunt and a bunch of other fey creatures#and the bloody azzizes and the ghost of judge lord jeffery’s#it’s amazing n7calibrations: Close to 10 years ago, there was a limited run of The Last Unicorn in theaters, and he made an appearance to introduce the film and sign autographs after. My mom got us tickets. He told a little story at the beginning about how he wasn't originally a fan of the band chosen to write the theme song for the movie. I forget the specific phrasing he led up to it with, but I'll always recall him joking about how if he wasn't careful the newspapers were going to have a field day running the headline "Peter S Beagle Hates America!". Also, if you havent, you should also read his 'The Innkeepers Song'.

I've met him in person btw and he's a fucking sweetheart

[ID: Text-intensive Twitter thread from the Shapeshifters chest binders Twitter account in reply to a post by artist and author Ursula Vernon. Vernon says, A non-zero number of you apparently did not know that The Last Unicorn was a book before it was a movie. It is by Peter S. Beagle. It is made of spun glass and fairytales and iron knives and there are individual lines that I would give my lungs to have written. Shapechangers replies, I saw him every year at NYCC for several years straight, bought something at his table, asked him to sign it, and we spoke. He remembered me from year to year, no small feat at that con. He remembered which stories he'd told me. One year I came back with a different gender on. He squinted at me a bit and said thoughtfully, "I've seen you before in this place." All I had to say was, "last year you told me the story about the inoshishi." And his face cleared, and he leaned in with a grin and told me about a German guitarist who he traveled with, twice. Who transitioned between the first and second time, so he'd gotten to meet this person all over again on the second round. It was a wonderfully kind way to let me know that everything was fine. I was fresh out of the closet and I needed that, and maybe he could see it. The Last Unicorn is the best book in the world and I will defend it and its author til I die. the end. /end ID]
I don't usually talk about celebrities; artists, when I do, and I'm keenly aware that one needn't be a good person to be a hell of a heartwrenching artist. But Peter S. Beagle has written a few of my favorite things in the world, he's an excellent singer and filker, and this Twitter thread was dreadfully important to me. I don't want it going away as Twitter becomes Shitter, because it's so often bad news, isn't it? It's important to me to share trans joy.

TAG GAME!!!
Thanks for the tag @froglatte you know I luv u girl
Rules: tag people who you want to get to know better!
Favorite Color: Easy one. This is Maroon 100% through and through. Its a good color to wear, for makeup, or even hair dye. It works as a color for anything and matches with almost everything. Omg I love Maroon. Also, sidenote, I saw a maroon C8 Corvette at work yesterday and fell in love.
Currently Reading: Grace dont yell at me, Im still reading Howls Moving Castle but nearly done. Just so busy at work I haven't had time. Next up on the docket is The LA BB Murder Cases, followed by The Last Unicorn and then finally all 5 books in the Tian Guan Ci Fu(tgcf)/Heaven Official's Blessing series. This last series is gonna be a workout, its 750k words long all combined. Also (I looked it up) that IS longer than the bible.
Last Song: A Place Where Were Better by The Everyday Anthem -> this song is a masterpiece, this album is a masterpiece and its a shame this band is no longer active. Highly encourage a listen, this is an emotional piece tho.
Last Movie: BLACK WIDOW *chefs kiss* go watch it y'all, it was VERY good!
Last Series: Finished Season 3 Part 2 of Attack on Titan. So if you've seen the anime you prob know about where Im at so all I can say is WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING!? Also, I may be slightly infatuated with the one and only Captain Levi Ackerman, but im also pissed off at him rn (iykyk) like he's so hot but im UPSETTI!!!
Craving: So usually I have chocolate cravings often, but rn I would kill for some chicken and dumplings, but the good thing is im making that for dinner tonight!
Tea or Coffee?: Coffee all the way. So far this summer I have had 2 cups of coffee (give or take) to start every morning of work. I don't think its enough to develop an addiction, but I honestly just need the caffine boost. Also my roommate introduced me to frog lattes, so those are fun!
Sweet Savory or Spicy?: Tough one. For the moment I'll say savory, but it depends (and spicy is a close 2nd). Sometimes I would kill for some indian biryani, spicy italian sausage, or jalapeño chili, but other times I just want a banana split
Currently working on: Nada. Will be wrapping up my summer job soon and preparing to go back to uni, so my time is very limited.
No pressure tags (only if yall want to 💜): @mamaturtle11 @by-the-primes @wammyhoe @mello-dramatics @approximatelypi @animealexjoans
