heeseung is a diligent and mindful boyfriend who carries a lot of high expectations, not only towards his partner, but especially himself. whenever i read for him, i get a lot of insecurities and doubts concerning the romantic aspect of his life.. he's someone who defines so much of his own worth and value by what he can do for people. so best believe if you get to a place of dating him, he'll be immensely focused on pleasing and satisfying you. his significant other will be the main thing occupying his mind; he'll be obsessed about you. like all he'd think about is; “what can i buy for y/n? was my gift or date idea good enough? how did they react? what more can i do for them, so they feel happy in this connection, i'm worried they feel bored.” he'll have all these questions in his mind constantly. i feel like you two might share this tendency to hyperfixate on the people you love. you might share this pronounced earthy and airy energy, where both of you can be prone to overthinking, but at the same time, go through life expecting a lot from yourself, as well as the people around you. hard-workers in several different ways. you yourself might also not be the type to be easily satisfied.

heeseung would be so sweet; he’d try his best to not say anything that’d maybe make you uncomfortable. if he happens to slip up his words, he’d immediately correct himself afterwards, words stuttering a little. after you two are more familiar with one another, he’d be a little more bold and flirty— the way he’d have the smallest of smirks toying on the corner of his lips as he tells you, “you don’t have to be afraid or anything, you can just touch me, y’know?” but in all honesty, he’d be such a natural at this— a really professional and amazing partner, who just knows the right words to say…

jay would be so lovely; a dictionary example of a gentleman— never pushes you past you comfort zone, and always reassures you that those accidental touches are completely alright with him; would take care of you behind the scenes— gets you a bottled drink whenever he visits the vending machine for one, passes you his heat pack whenever you’re feeling extremely cold, always checks in on you during long shoots, vice versa…

jungwon would be so caring towards you. looks out for you nearly every minute of the day; always makes sure to grab an extra snack for you, just because you may feel a little awkward to take one for yourself; always brings you a bottle of water at the start of every shoot— he’s like your water patrol, always making sure that you’re well hydrated, especially under such weather conditions. is such a hard worker— tells you that it’s a hundred percent alright for your arm to graze against his own, not wanting the hovering of your hands to disrupt the essence of the choreography…

riki would be a tad bit bashful, but for the most parts, he’d be pretty sweet; at the start, he’s all “uh hello”s and short, straightforward replies. as time passes by, however, he starts being more open, especially in his forms of expression; is never hesitant to tell you a cheesy pickup line, or some horrid joke. feels so comforting to talk to— in fact, he’s already creating little inside jokes between the two of you. when it comes to dancing, he’s so, so focused; always monitors your pair dance parts with such concentration, and is sure to compliment you afterwards, hands raised for a high-five…

For Sally:

Amy (if she lived) she would totally welcome Sally with open arms and make sure she's alright. She would probably ask Sally why she ended up at the studio, if she's hurt. hungry, or thirsty. Then she'll make sure Sally is alright and try to figure about if she got hurt or anything.

Owen would go: "Ah shit another kid?" Then Amy will scold him and tell him to be nice. Owen might just awkwardly ask if Sally likes puppets and probably sit downs and teaches how to play poker before Amy tells him not to make bets with puppets again

Anthony would be like a fun uncle to his niece, he probably bought her some geeky shirt and showed his matching tattoo he got with his GF. He would call her every day and asks how is college doing. He also played the drunk telephone with her as Beth was trying to figure out what he was saying to Sally and vice versa for Sally to Beth

Jake probably met her because of Amy or Beth. He would make sure she's ok during her visits, and he might even ask her what motivated to visit the studio and if Nick or the others caused her some trouble. He might even do some voice impressions and share some funny stories about working with Amy and Owen.

Sarabeth "Beth" would pretty much act like a big sister to Sally. She will get her a drink to chat about Anthony being an idiot, discuss work and how their editor "Ericka Swan" is a bit insane. Both would also bond with Anthony and go to theme parks with Blue Scout (Hannah Pierson) and Space-buns Scout (I think we called her Hollie or something like that. They're from our duality AU) Basically a family bonding time

Brendan would basically hold Sally and ask if she's Beth and Anthony's kid. Then he would be chocked that Anthony has a niece

Kimberly "Kim" would be all like: "You got a niece, Tony-tunes? Cool"

Jordan would simply pat Sally's head and give her some chocolate. They tend to be the cool sibling friend

Victor might recognize her as his granddaughter from one of his kids (not sure if Anthony has a sister or brother), but he probably won't get too close. Sally probably doesn't want anything to do with him either since Anthony has been like a big brother to her.

Mitchell "Mitch" would love her as cousin

Mortimer, he probably recognized Sally from the pictures in Anthony's wallet. He didn't know she was his niece, but knew she was connected to his host like Beth was.

Riley probably would be done with having to deal with more youngsters somehow tied with the weird conspiracy guy that tried to take Mortimer to the police. At least she's glad she doesn't act like Exliza or Beth.

Nick might find Sally tolerable and even share some of his finest works with her as a way to impress her (in the Platonic sense)

Daisy would try to make her a pie, and then want to know how the hell is she related to Anthony Pierson.

Blue Scout "Hannah" loves her as her cousin and a sorta aunt figure

Space buns Scout "Holly" loves Sally as her best friend and she often asks when they can visit "Uncle Anthony and Aunt Beth"

For Exliza

Amy's first reaction to Exliza would be something like "Huckleberry hot chocolate pie, it's Exliza?!" Then she proceeds to be nice and apologizes for their bad experiences and have a nice cup of tea

Owen is all like "Ah Shit here we go again" and proceeds to get the first aid kit and those children's leashes to make sure Exliza doesn't jump into trouble.

Jake would be aware of the complicated history she had with Amy. but nonetheless would be happy to help Exliza in future projects and even ask if how is she doing with her puppets.

Anthony would be somewhere within "HOW THE HELL IS SHE ALIVE" and "Well at least she doesn't take our group as a joke" and then gets her a beer because his life is a mess.

Beth would be all like "I think she's some sort of Uncle Owen version of a lucky charm." and a combination "WHAT DO YOU MEAN SHE DOESN'T USE THE FIRST AID KIT?" Then she would faint if she heard about Dolly-

Branden might be happy to have another chaotic been to take care of and try to adopt evil puppets with.

Kim would be all like "Piersons, are you sure you guys are not madmen magnets or something?"

You two were eating ramen in the living room, watching a movie. Heeseung, too caught up with the movie, had ramen noodles hanging out of his mouth as he blankly stared at the TV. You looked over at him, almost spitting out noodles. He looked like he was spaced out or crazy, mouth hanging open, noodles almost falling out his mouth.

You slowly got out your phone, taking a pic.

"Did you just take a picture of me?" Heeseung asked, snapping out of space. He quickly swallowed the noodles and regained his composure. "No." You held back a laugh "You're lying let me see." He argued, trying to reach for your phone.

You held your phone back, just out of his reach, "No, you're going to make me delete it."

You were trying your hardest to hold back laughter, but failed.

"You should've seen yourself, you looked hilarious!" You laughed, holding your stomach from laughing too hard "Give me your phone!!" He yelled, trying to snatch your phone from you. "Noo~ I'm going to set it as my wallpaper." You replied with a cheeky grin.

Heeseung ended up tackling you, tickling your sides until you dropped your phone.

"HeEseUng nO!"

Jay:

Laying on the couch, Jay was too busy on his phone to pay attention to you, who was now bored. Tired of scrolling through your phone, you decided to mess with him for a bit.

You snatched his phone and ran into the hallway.

"Pay attention to me!" You whined, sticking out your tongue to aggravate him "Y/N, give me back my phone!" He shouted, getting up from the couch.

He went to the hallway and tried to snatch his phone back from your hands. After a few tries, he got tired of playing around. He picked you up and threw you over the shoulder.

"Jay! Let me down!!" You shouted, hitting his back "Not until you give me back my phone!" He replied.

He carried you to the bedroom and placed you on the bed, tickling you.

"This is what you get for stealing my phone, you're going to die from tickles." He said "nO. StoP iT." You laughed, still holding onto his phone "Do you really want the gravestone to read, 'Here lies Y/N L/N, died from tickles'?" He questioned "Okay, okay!" You gave up, handing him back his phone "Thank you." He said, giving you a kiss on the temple, "The next time you want attention, just tell me, alright?" "Okay." You smiled.

Jake:

You were playing with Layla while Jake watched.

“Who’s a good girl?? You are.” You said, as you gave Layla belly rubs, “Jakey, doesn’t it seem like she likes me more?” “No way, she loves me the most.” He replied “You sure about that Jakey??” You teased as you hugged Layla.

Layla licked your face before going back to smiling with her tongue out.

“See? She loves me now,” You said, “Layla, do you wanna stay at my house??” “No way, I’m not allowing that.” He replied, “Let’s see who Layla goes to.” “Alright.” You agreed.

You and Jakestand in opposite sides, urging Layla to come closer. Layla was a bit confused on who to go to but after a few seconds, she went to you.

You bursted out laughing, “She loves me the most now!”

Jake practically fell to the ground, eyes closed. He was quiet for a few seconds before screaming, “LAYLA!!”

He stood up back up and tackled you, sweeping you off your feet and throwing you over his shoulder.

“JAKE LET ME DOWN.” You screamed “TAKE BACK WHAT YOU SAID FIRST, LAYLA LOVES ME THE MOST!” He replied “NEVER!” You shouted.

He started to spin around, making you both dizzy.

“JAKE STOP I’M GETTING DIZZY!” You shouted “NOT UNTIL YOU SAY THAT LAYLA LOVES ME THE MOST!” He replied “OKAY, LAYLA LOVES ME THE MOST!” You teased “AAAHHHHH!” He screamed in frustration.

He puts you down on the couch and when you thought it was over, he started to tickle you.

“AGH JAKE!” You screamed “Repeat after me, Layla loves Jake the most and I will always be second place.” He said “NO!” You replied “I’m not going to stop until you say it.” He said “OkAy, LaylA lOves jAke tHe mOst aNd I wiLl alWays bE seCond PlaCe.” You gave in.

Jake stopped tickling you and smiled in victory.

“But we both know that’s a lie.” You commented, holding back a laugh.

Here comes the tickling.

Sunghoon:

“Rock, paper, scissors on who does the dishes?” You asked “Sure.” Sunghoon agreed.

“Rock, paper, scissors, shoot!” You shouted.

“YEAHH!” You shouted “WAit waiT, best out of three!” He argued “Too late, you’re doing the dishes.” You replied, sticking out your tongue “You were just lucky, best out of three, you won’t win that’s why you won’t do it.” He complained “Alright you big cry baby, just to prove that fate has chosen you, Park Sunghoon, to do the dishes.” You replied, smirking.

“Rock, paper, scissors, shoot!” Sunghoon shouted.

“NOOOOOOOOOO!!!” He shouted, “YOU THREW ROCK TWICE THAT’S CHEATING!!” “NO IT’S NOT YOU’RE JUST SALTY!!” You replied.

Sunghoon gave up and threw you over his shoulder, heading towards the living room. “Let me down!” You shouted, hitting his back “Not until you admit you cheated!!” He replied, laying you down on the couch “And what are you gonna do if I don’t?” You questioned “Tickle you.” He replied.

Hands at your sides, aggressively tickling you.

“AGHH SUNGHOON YOU’RE GOING TOO FAR!” You screamed, laughing “NO YOU DID IN ROCK PAPER SCISSORS!” He argued “WHAT ABOUT THIS, WE DO THEM TOGETHER!” You compromised “NO YOU DO THEM!” He argued “SUNGHOON PLEASE!” You begged, trying to swat his hands away from your sides “Fine! But you owe me ice cream afterward!” He said.

Sunoo:

You and Sunoo were doing each other’s makeup. You wanted to prank Sunoo, so you decided to ‘accidentally’ put a bit too much blush and drew hearts all over his face, saying “It’s a Valentine’s Day theme makeup look, relax Sunoo.” “Alright, but you better not do anything funny.” He replied “I won’t.” You lied.

After you were finished, you quickly took a picture and told him to open his eyes.

“Y/N WHAT IS THIS?!” Sunoo screamed, “You said you wouldn’t do anything funny” “I’m sorry! You still look cute though!” You replied, laughing “No I don’t! I look crazy!” He replied, pouting “I’m getting revenge for this!”

Sunoo tackled you, tickling your sides.

“AHH KIM SUNOO!!” You screamed “You brought this upon yourself Y/N L/N!” He said, laughing as well “Sunoo, I’m sorry!! It won’t happen again!” You apologized “That’s not good enough, try again!” He replied “Kim Sunoo, the visual of Enhypen, the most handsome guy I know, the boy with the most duality, my sunshine, I’m sorry for doing that to your precious pretty face!” You shouted.

Sunoo stopped and smiled, “You flatter me, Y/N L/N, but don’t do that again!”

He laid on top of you, head on your chest and arms wrapped around you. “I can’t promise that, but you have a free pass to do that to me.” You said, “Deal?” “Deal, I guess..” He agreed with a pout “I can tell that you’re pouting.” You said, kissing the top of his head, “I love you Kim Sunoo. Don’t ever forget that.” “I know,” He replied, smiling, “I love you too Y/N L/N.”

Jungwon:

You and Jungwon were playing a game on the Nintendo Switch. You kept on winning which made Jungwon a bit frustrated.

“Are you cheating?” He asked “How am I cheating? You just suck.” You teased “No I don’t. Watch, in this match, I’ll win.” He replied.

While playing the game, an idea popped into Jungwon’s head. When you were close to winning, Jungwon suddenly started to tickle you. “YAH YANG JUNGWON YOU CHEATER!” You shouted, trying to finish the match “You’re winning too much!” He replied, “It’s not fair!”

In the end, you won that match.

“A cheater for sure.” He said “You cheated during that match!” You argued, “I was lucky to win.” “Ah, whatever, I shouldn’t be making a big deal out of it.” He said, pouting.

You looked at him, feeling a bit bad that you made him pout.

“It’s alright Jungwon, you can always improve.” You said, “Do you wanna watch a movie and cuddle?” “Can I pick the movie?” He asked “Of course.” You replied, “Want me to go get some ice cream to eat as well?” “Yes please.” He answered.

You went to get some ice cream from the kitchen and went back to the living room with two spoons.

“Cheer up, Jungwon, next time I’ll go easy and let you practice with me.” You said, giving him a kiss on the cheek.

Ni-ki:

You two were laying in bed, Ni-ki refusing to get up.

“I guess it can’t be helped.” You sighed, getting up.

Before you walked out of the room, you looked back at Ni-ki, his eyes still shut.

“Looks like I’ll have to eat Bungeoppang by myself.” You said loudly, speed walking down the hallway before Ni-ki can tackle you.

You thought you were safe until you were swept off your feet. Ni-ki had you over his shoulder.

“Well that was quick.” You commented “Don’t eat Bungeoppang without me, you can only eat it with me.” He said, his voice hoarse “Yeah, yeah,” You replied, “So you won’t get up when I tell you to but you will when I go to eat Bungeoppang?” “Bungeoppang is for life.” Ni-ki replied.

Ni-ki carried you to the kitchen, placing you down next to a chair.

“I’ll get the Bungeoppang, you sit tight.” He said “Alright.” You replied, holding back a laugh, “We still haven’t brushed our teeth.” “Bungeoppang first, we’ll brush our teeth after.” He said “You mean, you’ll brush your teeth after,” You replied, “Come and brush your teeth when the Bungeoppang is in the microwave, it’ll taste better if you do.” You gave Ni-ki a peck on the cheek before heading to your shared bathroom.

A/N: It took forever to write for all of the members but I’m glad I did but Sunoo’s ending is just 😩😩 I wasn’t able to put in the entire request for all of the members but it still had parts of it. I hope you enjoyed it!

Your dates would consist of going bowling together, theme parks, a walk in the park — you can count on having a fun time with heeseung!

He would just want to impress you );

He’s be always so attentive to you and remember even the littlest of details about you

You’d be in a shop together looking around and he’ll tap your shoulder, showing you a lace shirt that you instantly fall in love with

It’s just your style!

You’d ask him how he knew you would like it, to which he would simply mumble  with, “you told me a few months ago that you like shirts like this.”

You’d just stand in shock like :ooo

Please he loves you so much, if it’s something that you tell him you like or don’t like, he’ll immediately store it in his memory! He wants to know so much more about you 🥺

Your dates are definitely what you look forward to whenever you see him!!

But at the same time on those late night after-practice dates he just wants to make sure that you’re not staying up too late all the time just to make sure he’s doing okay after practice, his y/nnie needs their sleep too ):

as for dates, to me he seems the type to be into really spontaneous and random things!! He’d love going somewhere fun or just simply randomly travelling with you without a destination!

He especially loves to sneak out of the dorm late at night and meet you at you and his favourite park.

It’s located at the top of a really tall hill, and you’ll both spend hours sitting on the swings, chatting away with little care for the rest of the world or the time as you both simply giggle at each other’s jokes and contentedly talk about anything and everything; watching the city lights glow from hundreds of metres below you

He’d offer you his jacket when the temperature drops by a few degrees suddenly

You’d be like no!! It’s okay you should also stay warm, I’m okay 🥺

But then because he is such a sweetheart he’d huff and sit next to you on the swing, making the single-seater far too cramped as he tries to supply you with his body heat if that’s the only way that you’ll accept not freezing to death 😠

But then you’ll both slip due to there not being enough space for both of you on the wing, and your both fall flat down on your butts lmao

You’d both freeze, staring at each other blankly on the floor

but then you’d both crack up and laugh for the longest time — hushing each other in-between giggles from the fear of maybe you were being a bit too loud and could wake some people up?

But then you’d both fall into giggling messes once again as you blame each other for causing the other to fall down ):

You’d eventually sit together huddled on a bench, sitting in silence and simply staring out at seoul’s twinkling night lights as you share his leather jacket: heavy and warm as it drapes across you and his’ shoulders

But eventually you’d both finally head home! — your eyelids soon growing too heavy and both of you afraid of accidentally falling asleep at a park at 1am lmfao

idk why but i can just see a lot of late-night dates with jake,, such as

baking cookies together at 1am???? probably has happened twice already in your relationship aha 😁

honestly you both spend so much time together casually that you end up arguing on whether that time where he randomly showed up at your house wanting to make relationship bracelets together was really a date or not lmao

he is also so <3 so incredibly sweet too though uGH. he is a sweetheart and like heeseung he will remember every little detail of you which will be useful for when he comes up with more date ideas in the future (

on dates such as eating at a restaurant together he will always bring you flowers like the gentleman he is.

it’s kinda funny because when youre both on a date together alone with no other people around you both become complete crackheads

OK SO i mostly stan 1 relatively new but pretty big group called ENHYPEN. lemme just,, Enhypen commonly stylized as ENHYPEN, is a South Korean boy band formed by Belift Lab, a joint venture between CJ ENM and Hybe Corporation. This group was made through a survival show called I-LAND and out of 23 competitors 7 ended up debuting as enhypen. Something interesting i think about this group is that they don't have designated positions except for oldest, youngest and leader so everyone is basically good at everything though some has their strong points.

1. Yang Jungwon (the one in the emerald green clothes)

So hes the Leader of enhypen! very mature mom friend, very caring and always thinks about other peoples feelings. All rounder, has vv stable vocals and good at popping (HE DID IT IN HIS SLEEP ONCE DHSGFJ PRECIOUS BB. Also adorable and has sceri duality. ALSO HES 17 his bday is feb 2004 WHICH MEANS HES THE YOUNGEST LEADER IN ALL OF BIGHIT He also trained and competed in professional taekwando.

2. Lee Heesung (the one with slightly blue hair in the top left)

He is the oldest at 19 years old (15 oct 2001) Very famous at I-LAND and among bighit trainees in general for being one of the best trainees and aces. He has perfect pitch and also is a reallyy good dancer. Although he is the oldest hes very playful and pure crackhead energy really. OH ALSO he trained with TXT and are pretty close with their members.

3. Jay / Park Jongseong (standing up with cream blazer and also next to the guy with pink hair)

He is the second oldest at 19 years old (20 april 2002) often compared to Levi ackerman. Looks intimidating but soft asf. was in one unit with sunghoon when i-land started and before they came in the room everyone was so awkward and after Jay came in everyone started talking so very moodmaker. Lets his younger mates tease him and never fights back. also hes fucking rich thats it (his dad owns sinar tour)

4. Park Sunghoon (sitting down with brown blazer)

Hes 18 (8 dec 2002) He used to be a professional figure skater and competed in international competitions before he decided he wanted to be an idol. He has a lil sister and he takes care of her so well so wholesome cry. Hes naturally funny and says whatever is on his mind and its just hilarious. He can also be jokingly narcissistic and its rlly funny. He was also ranked num 1 visual by I-LANDers.

5. Jake/Sim Jaeyoon (sitting down with red blazer)

Hes 18 (15 nov 2002
) Lil aussie boy. Very softie has a dog and obsessed with said dog (its name is layla its adorable) also has a rich dad and also has trained the shortest. In i-land he was an icon of growth because of how much he grew and improved despite his short training time.

6. Kim Sunoo (pink hair)

18 yrs old (24 june 2003)
hes the aegyo KING and soo confident. Hes really good at lifting peoples moods and is a ray of sunshine. Hes also an icon of growth too because he was the first one eliminated from i-land and came back and ranked 1st kjdshfg mint chocolate ice cream and selfie lover

7. Nishimura Ni-Ki (the one with the long kenma like hair)

He is the maknae and 15 yrs old (9 december 2005) he literally debuted at 14 like WHT how what am i doing with my life. He started dancing at a really young age and is really really good at it (he can memorize a whole choreo in 10 mins. He really knows how to make the older ones laugh and gets treated like a baby even though hes one of the tallest shhs

ok basically the concept of iland was 12 people got to stay in iland (where they had amazing facilities and could potentially debut if they were there) and then there was ground for the remaining trainees who didn’t make the cut, so they trained in the “ground” building and if iland lost members during a test, then pp from ground would replace them

so sunoo was in ground for most of pt 1 which made me v sad bc i wish they gave him a chance bc he showed so much improvement </3 he was so good and got good scores too

but he actually wasn’t one of the members who made it to pt 2 v easily, he was part of the 6 who got in through global voting

but with the global voting he ranked #1 out of everyone 💆‍♀️ king shit

he didn’t get that much screentime in pt 1 but when he did, he WORKED the angles so ppl could notice him

he literally practiced in front of a camera the whole day so he knew that clip would air

but sunoo worked REALLY hard and he was so positive and cheerful despite how stressful and depressing iland was

literally everyone was shocked when they found out he had health issues bc he was always so bubbly and cheery

  Okja is a fable – at least if feels like one – about an giant animal raised in the simple but idyllic surroundings allowed to run wild and free in the mountains of South Korea. She’s been raised and cared for with love by a young girl, Mija (An Seo Hyun), who’s her constant companion.

Mirando’s newest CEO, Lucy Mirando, is intent on convincing the world that under her leadership, Mirando Corp.’s a GMO free, environmentally friendly paragon of capitalism working to solve the food shortage, looming on the horizon, for consumers. These “Superpigs” are the solution…

Tilda Swinton’s bracingly bubbly, slightly disaffected Lucy Mirando is a brilliant caricature of the greedy corporate head of industry intent upon being a beloved icon in the public eye. If she reminds you of anyone, it’s purely coincidental as this isn’t an uncommon desire among the rich, powerful, but dying to be popular crowd. Lucy desperately wants to outshine her sister Nancy, the last CEO, and her energy reflects her frantic need to be liked, be successful, and not be called psychotic… Swinton’s performance is, at times, deliberately disjointed – like she’s a marionette whose strings are just outside the visible spectrum. You’re almost convinced she sits like a broken doll in a corner somewhere in between moments of being “on” in front of the bright lights and crowds.

The duality of her persona is set into sharp relief when set against the subtle machinations of her smooth and suave right-hand man Frank Dawson (Giancarlo Esposito) and at stark contrast to her portrayal of Lucy’s twin the unapologetically ruthless Nancy (also played by Tilda Swinton).

After this game show like opening, the scene shifts to the mountains of South Korea where we see a grownup Okja for the first time. Okja is a rotund, hippo-sized animal with a puppy-esque quality and the joyfulness of dolphins at play (assuming of course those pods of dolphins we see happily leaping at sea aren’t actually death squads returning to home base from some nefarious dolphin mission… ok, that went left) and a marked intelligence.

Mija believes she’s liberated Okja from the Mirando Corp. so, when a film crew and television personality Johnny Wilcox (Jake Gyllenhaal) show up with Mundo Park – the analyst responsible for collecting Okja’s data – Mija’s confused. Johnny Wilcox is there to announce the winner of the Superpig contest and take the winner, Okja, back to headquarters. Mija is the last to know that her friend’s days of freedom (and living) are now numbered.

This is Jake Gyllenhaal as he’s rarely (if ever) been seen on camera. His geekish, self-absorbed, semi-maniacal portrayal of a mostly-washed up television animal expert borders on the slap-stick.

Johnny Wilcox is deliberately cartoonish (it’s his trademark) and as the film progresses and his complicity begins to overwhelms him, his behavior becomes even less cohesive. It’s equal parts hilarious and harrowing. He literally comes apart at the seams on film. His performance is a jarring note in among a range of subtle and nuance character portrayals but given that he’s playing a man who existed as an overblown caricature of a person to begin with, it felt somehow fitting that as the mood of the film went to dark places, his inability to reconcile his conscience with his actions would turn him into an over-emotive hot mess of crazy. It’s a deliberate step outside the tone of the unfolding drama which further serves to cast the action and intentions of all the involved parties’ around Mija and Okja in a justly ominous light. It does more to drive home the horridness of the choices being made than many of the more overt moments because of its disturbing outlandishness.

The heart of Okja is about Mija’s all-out offensive to save her friend and bring her back home to their mountain. Along the way, she flees her well-meaning grandfather, heads to Seoul, gets rowdy (this little girl threw herself into more than just the role for this film), then meets the ALF, a group of animal rights “freedom fighters” lead by Jay (Paul Dano), determined to expose the evils of the Mirando Corp. and use Okja to do it.

Inserting this group into the narrative brought a needed outside element. It elevates this film to a story beyond the linear arc and deepens the exploration of the corporate/consumer often combative power dynamic and relationship without being heavy-handed. I don’t know if it was intentional, but the ALF members are a living embodiment of the white savior trope shown for what it truly is. A self-indulgent belief that its morals and goals are not only somehow superior and therefore their actions are also just and justified but despite being interlopers, they know best how to save us all. The moment when this group must face its own culpability in the harm done to others is poignant and well placed.

Mija is duped, lied to, and used at every turn but never ceases in her battle to be reunited with her superpig best friend (if you want to know what “ride or die” really looks like, Mija is an object lesson in action).

The final act of the film is like a macabre stage production with its message front and center for your viewing consumption. Okja is never preachy but the undertones driving the plot and more than a few character’s overt motivations is unmistakable. But, it pushes through to the end remembering this is ultimately a story about a girl, her superpig and their journey in all the best of ways.

Okja takes its theme(s) and gives us a highly developed satire that plays out like a parable and feels like a much-needed invitation to reexamine how we see ourselves not only in relation to each other but to the greater world around us without trying to shove its objective down our throats.

Okja is how do you present something clearly controversial in nature to the masses in a way it can be received and processed without sparking project killing hostility or acrimony. It’s an unsettling, and at turns uncomfortable, tale but it’s beautifully told and spectacularly handled.

Note: This film is a mix of subtitles and dialogue in English; be sure you’re fully dialed in when you sit down to watch otherwise, you may miss something important (I really want to be quippy here but it would be a spoiler so… sigh, I won’t).
