when opla sanji says “you tried it?” about his dish to luffy with an almost childish excitement in his voice and when usopp says he’s the best cook in the east blue and when he’s in the background smiling to himself when nojiko is eating and enjoying his food i can’t help but think about the little boy who cooked for the rats and mice in germa because he had no one else to try his food after his mother died, the boy who was scorned and laughed at for wanting to be a cook and banned from cooking and how much every one of those moments would mean to him, how much it would make him smile, how elated he would be knowing that someday he has a whole crew of people to feed, who love his food and are not shy about letting him know it and yeah i’m incredibly sad about it

Infatuation
opla!Zoro x reader
Summary: Zoro's emotions for you are so repressed he doesn't even know he has them.
WC: 2.3k
Warnings/tags: drinking/hangover, all fluff
Tumblr media
As he grabbed yet another bottle off the counter of the bar, Zoro's eyes turned to the empty space in the middle of the room, cleared away so the drunken patrons could dance to the music being played onstage.
You were there, in the mess of bodies, twirling and dancing with reckless abandon, and he felt something in his chest. A flutter, perhaps. Maybe even a jump. His hand instinctively lifted to his chest, trying to be subtle, but ultimately failing. It was luck that nobody happened to be looking at him.
He had been feeling the strange palpitations for a while now. Every once and a while, his heart felt strange in his chest, his stomach flipped, his insides grew warm and fluffy.
He wasn't exactly happy about it. The feeling was so unnatural to him and he hoped that it would stop so he could feel normal again.
On the other hand, the feeling wasn't bad. It was unfamiliar, but it wasn't painful. He'd prefer if it was. It would be easier to see it as a problem. Instead it was fluttery. It was nice.
It had to stop.
He'd marked each previous incident in his head, and he ran through each one, trying to figure out a reason behind it.
The first time it happened was when he was sitting on deck, relaxing after a workout. His heartrate was elevated, but he was settling down, just in time for you to come out, doing your own work.
You drew your sword, going through a few stances, slowly going through the movements, one at a time, each movement careful and precise. He watched your process, admiring it. You looked over at him, noticing his stare.
"You like what you see, Roronoa?" You asked, swiftly executing a decapitation, before sheathing your blade.
His heart beat quickly as he watched that sequence of events. He frowned, trying not to call attention to it.
"You leave your sides open." He critiqued. "Oh yeah?" You grinned. "You do." "I'll have to work on that then." You drew your sword again, going through the motions one at a time, but Zoro was too startled by the sudden jump of his heart to stay and pay any attention.
You were known for your flirtatious remarks, but they were given out to nearly everybody you knew. Not just Zoro. Sanji had been on the receiving end of a comment or two, along with Nami and even Usopp once. It could be said that you flirted with Zoro the most, but your comments were often accompanied by flashy shows of swordsmanship. It was for the bit more than anything.
And for the most part, he hadn't felt anything like this before. At first, he had hated it, but he soon grew to understand that was a part of you and consequently, your friendship with him.
The second time was in the galley. Sanji was preparing dinner and you had come in, asking him if he needed help. He said yes, and you joined him, helping slice vegetables.
You got the hang of the chopping board quickly, and without much time passing, more than enough vegetables had been cut, and you went and sat down at the table, along with Usopp, Nami and Zoro. "Didn't know you could handle a knife like that." Nami said, sipping a glass of lemonade Sanji had given her.
"Yeah, I'm a bit of a natural." You bragged, giving an overly cocky smile.
And then his heart did it again. A flutter. This time he didn't leave, but he stopped listening to the conversation. He tried to tune it out while he thought about how strange it was.
You were attractive, a fact backed up by multiple members of the crew, but what really made you shine was your confidence. There were two types of confidence you liked to show. Genuine and comedic.
Your genuine confidence showed itself after a fight, in the fiery light in your eyes and the heaving breaths you took, as a victorious smile spread across your face.
Your comedic confidence was sassy and dramatic. Usually undeserved, but the way you presented yourself with that cocky smile- akin to the one you wore when you had finished fighting- was undeniably amusing, if not attractive. It was the type you tended to use when flirting.
Zoro liked both confidences on you. The look in your eyes complimenting the quirk of your lip, a complete lack of fear on your face. You were brave and you believed in yourself. It was beautiful.
The third time was when he had gone out for a walk at night. He was unable to sleep for whatever reason and decided that maybe a walk would help.
You were on night watch, sitting alone on a banister, gently kicking your legs. At first, you didn't notice him, your eyes were skyward, scanning the stars.
He watched you for a bit, your face completely serene as your eyes drifted across the sky. He almost didn't want to disturb you in this rare moment of peace. You were constantly on edge, in need of something to do, somewhere to be, that he never saw you relax.
It was as he studied your features, that his heart once again did a flip against his rib cage, and he quickly hurried back to his room.
To see you so calm for once, not burdened with a sword and scars and a point to prove, was a rare occurrence. To see what you were like completely alone, exposed to the world, open and liberated, it was a strange sight, but a welcome one.
You were open. Bare and exposed and completely unguarded. And deep, deep down, in a place Zoro refused to acknowledge and hardly even knew about, he loved it. He wanted to see you like that again and again, one million times over, until he forgot that you had ever been burdened in the first place.
And then, the palpitation at the bar. His brain, working on enough alcohol to make him at least a little tipsy, tried to connect any dots, but came up empty. It wasn't the food he ate or the amount of exercise he had done. The times were all arbitrary and nothing made sense.
"What's wrong?" You had sauntered up to the bar and sat down next to him.
"What?" "Your brow was furrowed. You were thinking. Which is rare for you, you know." You laughed at the insulting joke, before putting in a drink order. "What's eating you, Roronoa?"
He sighed, figuring someone might as well know if his heart decided to take him out in his sleep.
"My heart's been acting funny." He huffed. "You better not be dying." You said seriously.
"I'm not." He said it so defensively you had no choice but to think he was lying. "Oh my god, you are?" Your eyes widened in fear, looking around for help. He grabbed your arm to calm you down. "I'm not dying. I don't think. So don't go telling everyone."
You settled, but your eyes shone with a new, concerned light. "Are you okay?" You said it so sincerely, his heart did it again.
"It just happened." He warned. You looked at him, scanning him for any signs of pain.
"Does it hurt?" You asked. "Because it looks like it isn't doing anything." "It just feels weird. Like it's jumping." You thought for a bit, trying to understand. "Jumping?" "Yeah. Like it speeds up. It makes my whole body weird. Kinda like when I'm drunk, but it happens when I'm not."
You leaned back as your drink arrived. "Huh. It doesn't seem bad if you get to feel drunk without drinking." You mused. "Heck, I'd give up quite a bit to feel like that."
"Yeah. Don't tell people about it though." You saluted with two fingers before walking back to the dance floor. "You got it, Roronoa."
His heart did it one more time. It was growing in frequency. He could only hope this was an outlier, no indication for the future.
For the rest of the night he pondered this strange situation, and he thankfully didn't get another flutter in the bar.
The night went on and he eventually decided to go back to the ship, stumbling, a bit drunker than he had expected to get, walking in a wobbly line.
"Hey there, Roronoa."
You appeared, and he was reminded of the night he saw you looking at the stars and once again he felt tingly. You looked incredible at night, illuminated by the streetlights, and with less inhibitions than usual, Zoro voiced his opinion out loud.
"You're very attractive."
You were not nearly as drunk as he was, having had some restraint back at the bar. "Wow. How much did you have?" You hoped he couldn't tell how warm your face just got.
"Just a couple." He responded, trying to walk again, though his drunken gait was nowhere near ready to support him. He leaned heavily to one side and you caught him, nearly being taken down by his weight, only aided by him catching himself on the way down.
"Whoa there." You helped him back to his feet. "I can't wait to see the hangover you get tomorrow." He hummed as you helped him walk back to the ship.
The walk was longer than it should have been, most of your energy put into making sure he didn't fall into the water. You assumed everyone else was already asleep, which was good for them, but you wished you were asleep too.
You got him to his room and watched as he fell onto his bed, tugging off his boots and kicking them across the room. He lay down and shuffled awkwardly to get his belt off, his swords bouncing off each other in their sheaths. You watched as he manoeuvred the swords around his body and tried to carefully rest them against a wall. You watched as they nearly fell over, and you managed to run and catch them before they hit the floor.
Taking the blades, you carefully set them on the floor, flat, so as not to run the risk of them falling over later in the night.
"So, you think I'm pretty?" You asked, leaning over him as he settled in. "Did I really say that?" He groaned, not sounding half as worried as you expected him too, given his tough guy persona. "You did. But that's a problem I'll make you worry about when you're sober. How's your heart? Still fluttery?"
"A bit." "You should talk to a doctor about it if it starts to worry you. We can't lose you Roronoa."
"It happened again." You raised an eyebrow. "Wow, it's happened twice in front of me, you'd think I was the one causing it." He laughed. "You were there for all of them."
His comment meant nothing to him, but you connected the dots. "I have?" "Yeah. And you're the only one too." He briefly frowned. "What are you doing to me?"
Your jaw dropped as your brain found the answer to his troubles. Were you the reason his heart has been acting up? Was it just the flutters of a crush instead of a heart problem?
You stepped away from him. "Just get some sleep. You'll need it." And you left him to his business.
Alone with his thoughts, Zoro sat, drunk and wondering what had scared you off. You had been hovering over him one second and left him alone the next. What had he said to make you react like that?
He wasn't sure, but he decided that along with admitting that he thought you were pretty, that would be a problem for him when he sobered up, and tried his best to go to sleep.
He slept like a rock, and when he woke up, his head was pounding against his skull. A hangover. Of course.
He stayed in bed for a while, until he heard a knock at his door.
He opened it and came face to face with you. A memory reappeared. Him calling you pretty.
"Hey." You refused to let him begin whatever he was about to say. "Good morning. Breakfast is served." You left before he could say another word, but he noted the way your mouth curved slightly upward as you turn away.
He closed the door, wondering what he said to you last night, trying to remember.
He remembered calling you pretty, and talking about his heart flutters then-
"You were there for all of them. And you're the only one too. What are you doing to me?"
His face dropped as it finally clicked. That couldn't possibly be right. Him? Like you? Like that? It was out of the question. It was insanity.
Except it wasn't insanity. It made sense. Terrible, horrific sense. The way he liked spending time with you, the way his eyes subconsciously drifted towards you whenever you were present.
He wanted to slam his head against a wall. Had you figured it out? Had you told everyone about his stupid heart flutters and how you were the reason he felt that way?
He stepped out of the room, ready to accuse you of lying about his heart, noting that you stood just outside the door.
"You wanna talk about last night?" You offered. "What did you say to them?" He demanded immediately, praying that he had gotten to you before it reached the others.
"I haven't told anyone anything and I won't. That's your business." That settled him, if even a small bit.
"Though, if my theory about your heart flutters is correct, I wouldn't say it's unreciprocated." You winked.
Zoro's heart jumped in his chest as you walked to the kitchen, smiling back at him. Another flutter. He was screwed.

Write A Kiss Request: Monkey D Luffy (One Piece) x Reader ...a kiss as a promise
Tumblr media
(prompt list here) & 2025 Request List - requests open
...a kiss as a promise for Luffy
You had never seen colours quite like it. Deep oranges burning into dark reds, rippled with blues so rich they seemed tinged with purple. It seemed the closer your ship drew to the Grand Line, the more ethereal the whole ocean became. Perched in the crow's nest on the Going Merry as the sunset painted the horizon in deep speckled tones, you wondered how you ever felt at home anywhere else.
It had been a couple of months since you left your island home in search of adventure and intrigue, all sparked by the moment you met a man more extraordinary than the night sky itself: Monkey D Luffy.
It had felt more natural than breathing when you met the famous straw hat captain, the two of you instantly falling in step in a way the rest of the crew chuckled about behind closed doors. Luffy always had such a strange way with people, often chaotic and always unpredictable. But you brought a quiet calm to the pirate that no-one had seen before, giving him a stable harbour in his life's stormy sea, slowing him down enough for him to finally settle and rest. On beautiful nights like tonight Luffy was more drawn to you than ever, the ship's proximity to the fated Grand Line only filling him with need to hold you near.
"Nami thinks we'll be in the waters of the Grand Line in just two more days." You expected Luffy to sound more excited about the announcement than he did, his eyes fixed straight ahead at the sunset as he spoke. His stony gaze betrayed the smile on his face, an air of uncertainty hanging in the space between you, his confidence seeming to falter for the first time.
"And then you're one step closer to being king of the pirates. You'll be achieving your dream soon." You reminded him, his smile softening into something more sincere as you closed the distance between the two of you and let your hand rest on his shoulder. He brought one arm up around your waist, his hand settling on your lower back as he held you and spoke again,
"Do you think someone can have two dreams?" He looked squarely at you as he said the words, the intensity in his eyes sending a shiver down your spine in anticipation.
"I think so. What's on your mind Luffy?" Your free hand swept a lock of hair out of his face, giving you a little more of him to examine as you searched for the meaning behind his cryptic words.
"You'll stay with me, right? When I've achieved my dream and I'm king of the pirates, and you've lived out your dream too. You're not going to go somewhere else after all this, are you? Or can it be somewhere we can go together? What happens after the Grand Line?" His words dripped slowly from his lips like honey, each one a falling grain of sand in the hourglass of time he feared would drive you apart.
It wasn't unusual for Luffy to cling to you like this when you were alone together, his arms encircling you whenever he could. But this the first time he'd voiced his need to cling to you beyond that. A first look to a future that he knew he needed to have you in. From a man who skated through so much by just knowing things would work out somehow, this moment of desperate uncertainty struck your heart with all the meaning it carried. Luffy had a second dream. One he believed in just as strongly as his undeniable destiny as king of the pirates. Luffy's new dream was you.
"I'll still be by your side when all of our adventures are done, Luffy." Your thumb stroked soft stripes over his scarred cheek, his brow dipping in thought as he pondered your reply. Wide brown eyes rose to search yours, deep murky pools of hope and need.
"Do you promise?" It was impossible to say no to a question posed so sweetly, his inner child shining through in these rare moments of vulnerability he saved for only you. You decided to do something you hadn't before, something you hoped would portray the enormity of your affections for him better than words ever could. You leaned forward, hopeful the rest of the crew weren't keeping a watchful eye over their fearless leader, and kissed Monkey D Luffy. It was just a gentle peck, his lips as warm and soft as his heart, the sea around you seeming to settle into a moment of serene silence the moment you touched him. Luffy made no effort to move, his arms lightly locked around your waist as he leant just the slightest bit of weight forwards, just enough to feel his lips press against yours. Your eyes fluttered shut as you stood frozen in time, letting the endless well of love and admiration you have for your captain spill out from your heart.
When you blinked your eyes open the sky had grown darker, and you couldn't tell if a second or an hour had passed as the two of you embraced. You pulled away and rested your forehead against his, breathlessly whispering the words he needed to hear,
"I promise."

Evil goblins and fiendish ghouls had chased you from sleep, your skin covered in a thin layer of sweat and your chest heaving up and down in a struggling effort to calm your pounding heart.
You gripped at the thin sheet you’d brought from the ship, keeping it nice and tight over your chin. Your feet worked slowly to wind the fabric around them all in some foolish hope that the thin, flimsy sheet would keep you safe from whatever horrors might be lurking within the dark corners of the inn your crew was resting in for the night.
Your breath sounded all too loud in your ears.
So loud you feared it might alert whatever demon wished you harm of your sleeplessness.
Though, in the more logical part of your brain, you doubted such demons and monsters and creepy creatures would be able to hear your breath over the room shaking snores emanating your sleeping crew mates litter around the small room. But you weren’t truly thinking with any sort of logic.
Not after that dream.
No, no, no.
All your mind was insisting on repeating was the wicked laughter and horrid sights your nightmare had entailed. All it did was have you panic and freak out over every little bump and spooky sight you spied out of the corner of your eyes.
You tried to hyper-focus on the snores that overpowered the space.
There was Zoro’s chest rumbling snore.
Luffy’s mouthy rushed sounds were broken up by a murmur of words along the lines of meat or hungry.
Sanji’s, which was a little more breathy but would let a rumble of a snore loose here and there.
Chopper’s was a cute little Wee-wee-wee, Franky’s snore a strange whizzing noise, Brook gave a sound not much unlike his laughter, and then Nami’s, whose breath came out in an audible whoosh, which she would deny if you ever brought it up.
The only one who was deathly silent was Robin…but Robin slept like someone holding their breath which gave off its own eeire loudness.
There was one snore missing from the collective. The nasally snore was the one you were truly searching for and its absence only made your heart beat painfully against your ribs.
“...Usopp.” You braved, voice coming out weak and hardly even a whisper.
A long pause filled the space. A pause that had your brain coming up with horrible ideas about what might have happened to him.
“...yes?” You almost breathed a sigh of relief at his voice breaking through the dark, but the way it spoke on a weaver kept those monsters close at hand.
“Are you awake?” You whispered back.
“Of course not…I’m--sleep talking.” You would have chuckled at his humorous lie had your throat not been so tight in fear.
“Usopp?” You quietly called again.
“Yes?” Your fingers wound tighter into your sheets.
“I’m…I’m scared.” Just voicing it made your fear-filled brain race with terrifying ideas.
What if acknowledging your fear made the monsters even more bloodthirsty?
“Oh…well…I’m definitely not scared…nope. Not one bit.” The tremble in his voice told you otherwise, but you didn’t comment on it. You never commented on his lies, not when some of them gave him the strength to be brave in the most horrific of situations.
You prayed his faked bravery would keep the nightmares away tonight.
“Oh…good…good.” You responded, squeezing your eyes shut so that they wouldn’t continue to play tricks on you.
“It’s…kinda dark, huh?” Usopp spoke, your eyes instantly flying back open as if you might be able to see him in the darkness of the room.
“Just a little.” You breathed.
Luffy mumblingly demanding food gave your conversation pause.
“And…you’re kinda far away…would be hard for me to protect you from all the way over there…you know…if someone were to break in.” Your breath hitched in your throat on a terrified gulp.
“Why--gods, why would you say that?” You all but whimpered in your fear, eyes glancing upward to look at the dim light seeping in under the doorway as if someone might come busting in right then.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean--” Usopp’s voice came out in a rush of nerves. “If you come over here…I could keep you safe…like so safe.”
“Please?”
“Please,” Usopp stressed.
You took a deep breath in and out, stealing your fears, before you rushed to your hands and knees. You fumbled around, sheets tripping you up and making you stumble over a bony body that could only belong to Brook. You panicked an apologily, though surprisingly the skeleton stayed asleep as you all but climbed over him and rushed through the dark to where you knew Usopp lay.
Calloused and warm hands reached for you blindly. Hands that grabbed hold of you tight and helped pull you close.
Fearful curses spilled from your lips as you and Usopp struggled to wrap his fluffy blanket around you both.
You latched yourself around Usopp who latched right back onto you.
Snores filled the air once more once your fumble in the dark settled.
Your heart began to finally slow and calm now that you were wrapped up so nicely and snuggly within Usopp’s arms. You’re eyes drooped in your need for sleep when--
“Not to make you even more scared.” Usopp started, pulling a greatly displeased sound from you.
“Usopp.”
“But were you maybe scared because that pile of jackets on that chair turned into a terrifying shadow demon?” Despite your better judgment, you glanced towards where that chair sat in the corner. A chair that looked so hulking and demon-like in the darkness. Your fingers pressed a bit deeper into the flesh of Usopp’s back. “Cause I’m not scared of it, but I know you might be.”
“Only part of the reason.” You felt Usopp gulp down the growing dryness in his throat.
“And…the other reason?” You shook your head as you buried it against Usopp’s chest, deeply taking in his scent of gunpowder and something fresh--like fruit.
“I really don’t think you want to know.” You murmured into his skin. He chuckled nervously, scooting down further to bury his face in your hair.
“Heh…yeah…smart.” You two fell quiet, breath and heartbeats beginning to match each other. Beginning to pull you into sleep you so so craved.
The air filled with quiet.
An uneasy quiet.
A quiet that let you two hear the soft creaking of the single bed you two lay at the foot of.
Breath became thin.
Arms gripped so tight they locked in place.
Hearts pounded like some menacing drum against each other.
You both braved the sound and turned your heads slowly upward.
A shadow peeked over the edge of the bed to look down at you two. One the dim light only confirmed was real and not some figment of your imagination.
“You know,” The silky smooth voice that spoke was chilling. So chilling you almost didn’t recognize it as Robin’s voice. “Statistically you are more likely to be murdered while awake than while asleep.”
Horror clutched at your heart at the stats Robin offered up to you two. Horror that had you and Usopp utterly frozen in place.
“I hope that helps,” Robin spoke before slowly slinking back towards the head of the bed.
Zoro let loose a bone-rattling snore once Robin was settled back down.
“....I--I don’t think that helped.” You breathed.
“I…yeah.”
Your nightmares, Usopp’s own fears, and Robin’s chilling facts only made it that much harder to find sleep. Eventually, the warmth Usopp gave off lulled you into a mercifully dreamless sleep.
