fic writer wrapped: how much did you write? what were your favorites?
I was tagged by @youcalledmebabe to talk about what fic I wrote this year :3 this is a cool idea thanks for making this and including me!
I published about 75k this year. and wrote more than that because there's an additional 100k in the vault but let's not talk about it. onto the fics:
🌕 bomber’s moon
feels like I wrote all my clegan fic in a manic fugue state 1 trillion years ago but this is probably the best thing I wrote all year. the setting was fun to write and I've always liked writing fics about sexual exploration and the intimacy that can be found between two people if they're brave enough to open themselves up to it. perverted? maybe. but I enjoy exploring vulnerability. also loved doing research on wartime london for this fic and including landmarks/places american GIs were encouraged to go. writing the air raid scenes was interesting as well. also enjoyed raising ethical questions about wartime bombing in general and how our protagonists have blood on their hands :D

horny freak kink meme bullshit but the idea was so brilliant I had to write it. loved writing this setting. loved writing about the drunken bliss of those few days surrounding VE day. loved writing about how eerie and disturbing the whole affair would be. loved exploring how fucked up and angry it would make you even when the war was won. I liked the metaphors I used in this to contrast what's categorized as "dirty" in the eyes of nazi society aka homosexuality, gender fuckery, being a grunt in the american paratroops, and in joe's case being jewish, with what is actually dirty and immoral aka the nazi regime. the house being pristine vs. joe and web being dirty and all that. the veneer of beauty and normalcy vs. the actual dark underbelly of what propagates that shiny facade. what's that tumblr post that's like yes this 5k blowjob fic I wrote is a character study. well in this case it's true... oh yeah and I love men in women's underwear <3

including this one mostly for yna because she is so nice about it and made me much more proud of it with her lovely fic rec series. these shows just have the best most interesting settings to work with it's really so fun being able to bounce around from england to germany to the netherlands to france to austria I am so obsessed with it. I loved writing about holland and immersing myself in this celebratory atmosphere and imagining myself there and trying to translate that to the page while also exploring joe's discomfort with it all considering what they're there to do. I think joe has a such a unique position in the company to recognize the cost of all of this. and web is so fun to write when he's being goofy and embarrassing. joe being a prickly asshole is a great contrast to that and I love writing their banter so much. web asking way too many questions and joe entertaining him because what the hell is this guy's deal... web with lipstick marks all over his face is an image I've created in my head that will stick with me forever...

I’ve found that the most telling evidence that Something Else is amiss in the broad dislike of Scott is the lack of enthusiasm for Sciles. Compare it to Supernatural, which was also big at that time: 2 young attractive male leads (DOB being 3rd billed aside), good chemistry (both on-screen and IRL as friends), comedic dynamic, unbreakable bond, occasional flirting, etc. Sciles should have been THE pairing by almost any metric. Sterek had the antagonistic dynamic to set it apart, but given how much people water it down to fun banter or erase it altogether in fic, that canonical difference clearly wasn’t all that essential to shippers’ enjoyment. Allison comes up ALL the time as a complaint but other fandoms seem to be able to demonize and/or erase canon girlfriends without much of an issue. It leaves very, very few explanations when you look at it from that POV.

When I first entered fandom, I wasn't very interested in relationships; I focused more on character development in relation to plot. When I wrote, it was primarily gen fiction. As time passed, positive interactions with the fandom (there can be some!) led me to consider relationships as an important part of the greater whole. But one thing I never quite understood is the hostility to both Scott and Stiles's friendship and Scott and Allison's relationship. Unlike some people, I don't think that a non-canon relationship like romantic Stiles and Derek or Stiles and Peter simply can't work. I've written Sterek myself. It's always confused me how fandom seemed to seek validation for those ships by tearing down both of Scott's primary canonical relationships, which are completely unrelated.
Now, you know, I eventually came to several conclusions about why this happens, which I have talked about a great deal and will continue to talk about. But it's always key to me when actually grappling with an issue is an attempt to understand the other side. So I asked myself, for instance, why was Scott and Allison's canon romantic relationship so unpopular? It seems to me that those opposed to it have four major complaints which I have seen expressed in print.
It was heterosexual, and that is somehow bad.
It was stupid and dangerous: a newly bitten teenage werewolf falling in love with the teenage daughter of werewolf hunters was a recipe for disaster.
It distracted the lead protagonist (Scott) from the issues he should be addressing and the people to which he should be listening.
As the primary canon relationship of the first two seasons, parts of the audience felt it was being forced on them.
With the exception of the first one, which still mystifies me to this day, these others could have some value. I mean, the Romeo-and-Juliet trope is an old one, and people may be tired, in this modern age, of seeing it being re-enacted again. So, why don't you take an amble with me over to AO3? If these are legitimate fandom concerns, then it should hold up when we examine Teen Wolf's peer group of supernatural adventure shows.
Let's look at the famous Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003); it seems that the top two ships represented on AO3 are ...
#1 Spike and Buffy Summers
#2 Angel and Buffy Summers
Strange that the heterosexual canon ships of a vampire slayer and a vampire remain two most popular subjects. But that's an old show. We've changed. Let's look at something with more direct relevance. Tyler Posey was up for the role of Jacob in the Twilight film series (2008-2012). What ships are most popular there?
#1 Edward Cullen and Bella Swan
#2 Alice Cullen and Jasper Hale
Okay, interesting but there are still differences. There is less emphasis on inherent conflict, I guess. And those are movies, let's move back to television. (I will now switch from 'heterosexual' to 'man/woman' because some of these characters are definitely bisexual.)
True Blood (2008-2014) was a far more adult television show, so it would expand beyond the mainstream that the fandom finds so cloying:
#1 Eric Northman and Sookie Stackhouse
#2 Bill Compton and Sookie Stackhouse
Or maybe not. But that's premium cable targeted at a different audience. Let's look at the competitors, such as The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017) which ran coterminous with our show.

Or its spin off, The Originals (2013-2018)

It's kind of weird that these all have a certain pattern that the most popular ships to write about are all man/woman ships with built-in oppositional obstacles. Now, there are shows whose fandom are focused on non-heterosexual relationships, such as Supernatural, and while I haven't watched it and never will, I'm told that one of the reasons is that any canon man/woman ship was doomed by the narrative impulse to whack female characters. There's Legacies, which I don't know much about but it seems to be focused on a woman/woman ship and isn't that refreshing?
But I think, to paraphrase my favorite show, if three times is a pattern, five times might be a trend. It seems that fandom doesn't really have any problem exploring canonical problematic supernatural man/woman relationships as long as there is a particular trait among all the people participating in those relationships. Can you spot the pattern for yourself? Can someone explain to me why these are the most popular ships in their respective fandoms but those same characteristics make Scott and Allison's relationship distasteful. Of course, and always, we have to remember one thing

Off days never brought anything good.
Spencer was constantly tired. Constantly overworked. Constantly in need of an actual break, some time to breathe- but with time to breathe, came time to think, and his thoughts were never good when left to marinate for too long.
They turned to the past. To the Parable. To what he used to be, before the other Narrator swooped in and saved him. To what the fellow had said to him, the story he'd told him, and the knowledge, grief-laden in his voice as he surmised that this was all he'd ever know, probably.
To… to his Narrator.
"Useless."
"Stop trying to change the story, Stanley."
"No one cares, Stanley."
"Go back to your office and leave me alone, Stanley."
"Useless."
Spencer grimaced as the ghosts of his past assaulted him with the voice of one so familiar. See, he'd- part of him had hoped, when the other Narrator came to him, explained things, and showed him another option. Part of him had hoped, with such a burning intensity that seared through the pain of apathy, that maybe, maybe, the fellow could get through to his Narrator. There was more out there, there was a future, they could be happy and not trapped together and- they could be together, if only the bastard would look around him for once, would tear his eyes away from those of his fans, his admirers, those faceless masses that demanded more, more /more/ of the two of them.
There was probably something broken there in him, too; dragging him to perform higher and greater, pushing him to push Stan- Spencer, to be more than he was, more than they were, but.
He didn't want to think about that. Not then, not now. Admitting the Narrator was just as fucked up as he was invited a sort of self-loathing that Spencer had to deal with from enough other sources, thank you.
But, god. He really could have loved the man, is the thing. There was a camaraderie there, once upon a time. A power imbalance that belied friction, sure. A dismissal of anything real the Protagonist felt in the moment. But there was banter, and softness, and a lack of such a great ego in quieter moments, that had grown something tender and fragile in Spencer's heart, before the sudden attention ripped it out and tore it to bitter-green mulch.
He missed his old companion- not friend, they hadn't gotten there yet.
But they could have, and fuck, Spencer hated how much his heart keened for that could-have.
The sounds of the bar drifted lazily around him, blocked out by his tumultuous thoughts. It wasn't the bar he worked at; god, no, drinking at his own workplace would have been the most awkward thing ever. It was another place, a little ways away from his apartment that he could walk back, which. He probably would. He didn't want to shell out for a cab, and today was turning out to be one of those bad head-days that always ended in him stumbling home in the dark, thoroughly drunk.
He… should probably work on that sometime soon. Maybe wasn't the best way to cope with everything, but.
Later.
The Narrator's voice flickered through his ears, old insults and apathetic dismissals growing in volume and pitch as he sat there. Grimacing, Spencer swirled his beer and leaned back to down the rest of it, already thinking towards what he might order next. Maybe that local cider- he was feeling in a fruity mood, and he did like cranberries-
He must have been a bit more drunk than he anticipated, because when he threw back the last of his drink, he overshot it a bit. Would have been fine, if not for the fact that the bar was already a little crowded, and in tossing his head back like that, Spencer inadvertently smashed it into someone's arm.
"Excuse you!"
A spike of irrational irritation made Spencer grumble. Yeah, sure, he was the one that bumped into the guy, but the sheer annoyance in the other man's voice set off part of his brain that had been conditioned to antagonize did not want to deal with it.
He turned to apologize, but the guy cut him off before the words were even out of his mouth. "God, how rude, it's like nothing even exists outside your little bubble, isn't it?"
Ohh, that smarmy tone of voice made Spencer's hackles rise, and the effect was only amplified as he fully turned and got his first look at the offender.
Tall, thin, pale and pretentious; this man was as out of place in the dingy bar as a three year old would've been. He wore a slim-cut vest and well-pressed button-up, little crescent-moon glasses on the end of a nose currently turned up and being looked down.
For a brief, horrifying second that stole Spencer's breath away, he saw the Narrator. His Narrator.
But he blinked, and the differences became more apparent. This fellow was shorter; where his Narrator had always needed to tower over him, to make him feel small, this man was probably about Spencer's height. His hair was longer, pulled back in a ponytail, and blonde- a stark contrast to the darker shade of brown his Narrator had worn. His glasses were tinted an shade indescribable in the dim bar, and his voice was higher, more clipped, and decidedly American.
All in all, while something cold had cinched tight along Spencer's spine at first glance, the longer he actually looked at this man, the more he eased up.
The similarities were kind of uncanny, though.
Spencer blinked at the snapping of fingers inches in front of his face. He'd drifted while looking the man over, distracted in his thoughts, and it had been noticed.
"Are you even listening?"
Spencer looked this man in his cold blue eyes - and there was another difference, where his Narrator's had always been black and empty - looked at his arched brows, the way his pretty lips curled in a sneer, and oh, there was another thing he'd tried his best to ignore about the fellow back then, about the form he'd taken and worn like such a well-fitting suit.
A heat he'd done his best to block out then and ignore now started burning again.
Fuck.
"Well?"
Spencer swirled the last of his drink in his glass, considering.
…yeah. He could use with a distraction.

It didn't take much to turn the stranger's irritation with Spencer into a more… carnal interest. Just a bit of lounging back on the bar, making sure his arms were plenty visible. Tilt his chin up a little in challenge, shoot him a hooded, heated glance, and boom. Hook, line, and sinker.
Spencer knew he was hot. He didn't use it very often, but when he did, he knew how. He was practically gay catnip, and proud of it.
So, smash cut to an hour later, Spencer was balls-deep in this man whose name he might have gotten before immediately forgetting, slim hips clutched tight in large hands as his shitty Murphy bed creaked with every thrust.
The man had complained about the tiny apartment - thank God Spencer had had the foresight to clean up a little, didn't want any dirty socks lying around and moldy dishes piled up - but was quickly silenced with a mouth over his own and a hand on his dick.
They moved fast and dirty, little foreplay needed when Spencer had turned his rugged charm up while they were still at the bar. Hell, he'd seen his effect on the stranger on the way to his place, gait measured and lightly-awkward as he was ushered up the steps and through the door. But it clearly wasn't enough for him.
"Come on, I was under the impression this would be a fun lay, but you're really showing your ass here," the man huffed, knees tight around Spencer's hips as if he's trying to physically drag the man in closer.
Spencer shook his head, picked up the pace even more. "Shut up," he hissed, voice thick as he forced the words out through a throat that didn't want to cooperate.
The man's back arched with a particularly rough thrust, a shivery sigh escaping his mouth, but the sneer still pulled at his lips. "I mean, you're doing fine, but with the way you talked back at the bar, I was expecting better than fine. You're really disappointing m-"
Spencer growled again, low in his chest as he let go of the stranger's hips with one hand and grabbed him around the throat. The words coming out of his mouth were too similar, too familiar, and he did not want to examine why they turned him on even more, why they sent a thrill of pure excitement up his spine and straight to his dick. He just wanted the man to-
"Shut. Up!"
All restraint gone, Spencer dragged him closer by the grip still on his hip and by his throat, nearly off the bed as he plowed into that tight ass. Knees locked around his waist, sharp heels digging into the backs of his thighs but he didn't care, he was getting close, he could feel it. His alcohol-soaked brain and his frustrated and confused libido warred inside him, danced with his irritation, tangoed with the mixed and muddled feelings on his past, and took a deep and self-satisfied bow arm-in-arm with the man below him now panting, thready whines eking through Spencer's grip around his throat, that pretty blush dripping down his chest and staining the skin around his nipples dark and flushed. His back arched, pressing his cock between their stomachs, hot and leaking as Spencer covered him, dwarfed him, used him and took him apart.
Spencer was close, so close, he could feel the tension building in his gut, his balls drawing up tight but it wasn't enough, wasn't enough. He was close, but holding onto that feeling was hard, like sand slipping through his fingers as he chased it down. His legs shook around Spencer's waist, cock jumping with every thrust, and as he looked up with dark eyes and long blond hair splayed out on the dingy pillow beneath, he grinned sharp and feral and Spencer saw someone else there, suddenly, someone with darker hair, shorter hair, darker eyes and a voice came out that wasn't this stranger's voice, that was someone else-
"Finally, you're starting to actually listen."

The man's face overlaid with his Narrator's in his mind's eye again. The look he'd given Spencer, his words mixing and changing in his ear. The way that that, all of that, had just hit just right and been what- what pushed Spencer over the edge.
God.
Fuck.
He scrubbed away the tears that had started to fall, unbidden and unwanted, and hauled himself to his feet. He needed to go clean up, eat something maybe. Not think about this anymore.
…and maybe get another beer.

The following day felt like a blur knowing that you would have to go back to work later that night. You spent most of the day sitting on the couch watching TV, trying to get the dream from last night out of your head. No matter how hard you tried to distract yourself with what was on the screen, the image of Ballora dancing in the purple landscape was still burned into your brain. Fed up with the ballerina imagery that refused to leave you alone, and coming to terms with your crush, you decided that the best thing to help you get some closure would be to write a letter to your fictional girlfriend (with no intent on letting anyone see it). You walked over to your bedroom and dug around for a stray notebook you usually used to help you keep track of your finances, it definitely wasn't being used for keeping track of grocery costs today. "Dear Ballora, I'm sorry about shocking you yesterday. A woman as pretty as you shouldn't have to go through something like that, you don't know me and I don't really know you. But I don't think I would mind if we ever did get the chance to."  Relief surged with every word you penned on the paper, feeling satisfied with what you wrote you decided the only thing left to do would probably be to throw it out or burn it. As you tore the page from the book, your eyes caught a glimpse of the alarm clock next to your bed. Realizing you were going to be late for work, you stuffed the "letter" into your jeans pocket without thinking and put on your best shirt before scrambling out the door in a panic.
After another long elevator ride filled with banter from your automated guide, you once again found yourself standing in the Primary Control Module. Handunit (with the voice of an angsty teen due to a misclick on the elevator tablet) like before, instructed you to check the lights in Ballora Gallery once again. Still feeling a bit of hesitation like last time, but knowing what to expect, you pressed the blue button on the control panel. Ballora wasn't on her stage like before, you had no idea where she could be and just how big her room even really was. You spent a few seconds trying to pinpoint her location or at least a sign for where she could be, feeling like a kid at a zoo. You noticed something in the corner of your eye, what seemed to be a tall black mass in front of the glass. Your heart sank once you realized that she had been standing directly in front of you the entire time, hidden in shadow. You flung yourself away from the window in fear, squeaking like a scared puppy. Once that embarrassing moment was over, you went to press the button for a controlled shock. You stopped yourself, the thought of Ballora possibly being in any sort of pain prevented you from pressing the button, only after reassuring yourself that she was just an inanimate object did you press it. Dead silence followed once you pushed the button, you tried pressing it again, still no response. Despite something being very wrong, Handunit redirected you to Funtime Foxy's window asking you to do the same as before as if everything worked as intended. Like Ballora, Foxy was off of his? her? their stage but you managed to spot them near the window a lot quicker than you did Ballora. "Great." Handunit said in an unrecognizably distorted voice, before repeating itself for a few more times. Handunit's voice returned to normal explaining that it had a problem with the alternate voice options and for you to press on to Baby's room. Little did you know that tonight would change everything you thought you knew about these characters.
There you found yourself crawling through Ballora Gallery in the pitch black darkness. The past half hour or so had you questioning your sanity non-stop. One minute you were standing in Circus Control like normal, next minute you're fending off creepy baby dolls under a desk and taking advice from a 7'2" lady clown. You weren't sure if you could fully trust Baby, but given how she had helped you survive the Bidybabs, you felt like there really was no other option. There's NO way animatronics should be able to do what you saw, or talk to you the way they have. It all felt like a nightmare, one that you REALLY wished you could wake up from, or some kind of elaborate joke being played on you by your coworkers, but no; this was all VERY real. Baby had instructed you to do the exact opposite of what Handunit advised and to instead crawl slowly through Ballora's room to get to the breakers and restore power to the building. It made enough sense given Ballora's design seemed to always have her eyes shut, naturally, moving fast would generate noise for her to pick up on. Despite the perilous predicament you found yourself in, you felt almost glad to have a chance to get closer to Ballora (even if she was as dangerous as Baby made her out to be) dare you say, thrilling even. You could hear a music box on the far right of the room, the catalogue did mention that Ballora could play her own music during dance routines and now you'd be using it as your way of keeping track of her position. Eerily enough, it sounded exactly like the music you heard in your dream the night before. Ironic given the circumstances.
             The next few minutes were spent in an anxiety inducing cycle of inching your way across Ballora Gallery by crawling flat on your stomach and stopping any time you could hear Ballora draw near. Little by little you could see the door to the breaker room slowly grow larger in the distance as you drew closer. It looked like a sanctuary in the distance, like an oasis in the middle of a blistering desert, leaving you with a sense of relief until you heard Handunit's voice blare through the auditorium speakers: "It seems you are taking a long time. Please proceed as quickly and as quietly as possible.”  Your heart jumped into your throat. Damn thing nearly gave you a heart attack and worse it probably just alerted Ballora. With that in mind you'd have to pick up the pace(as quick as you could be at least). You were a good ways past the half way point and the door was so close you could already make out the shape of the handle, nothing could ruin this moment . . . except of course Ballora spinning right in front of you.  She was still shrouded in the darkness of the room, but you could just barely make out her features in the dim light that hung above the breaker room door. Her beauty was mesmerizing, the mixed feelings from the first night came back ten times as strong. You felt terrified but at the same time, excited being able to see her so up close and in her element. Her blue "hair" was tied back in a neat bun with a silver pearl tiara on top of her head that glistened in the pale light, you could see the tutu around her waist twirling around on it's own as she spun. Seeing her beauty in person, even in such a dire situation, made your dream from last night feel like nothing special. A part of you wanted to greet her, but given the likely outcome it was for the best to refrain. "Would she really want to talk with someone who tased her like a wild animal?" you thought to yourself, feeling an immense amount of guilt over the night before. Reality felt like it was falling apart with the revelation, but there was no denying Ballora was a sentient being with her own thoughts and emotions. You had become so caught up in your own thoughts and emotions you had failed to notice sooner that she left as quickly as she came, her music growing fainter and fainter in the distance.
With the encounter over, you slowly stood up and placed a hand on the door knob. On the breaker room's door was another poster, this time of a familiar face (kinda). It was none other than Freddy Fazbear himself, but not the one you remember growing up with as a kid. This version of the bear was all white with purple accents instead of brown and had a noticeably smaller muzzle, but the biggest change of this incarnation was the inclusion of a small handpuppet version of Bonnie where his right hand should be. It was kinda strange how one of the main characters from previous versions was nothing more than a toy this time around you thought to yourself. After doing a double take behind your back to make sure Ballora wasn't close, you carefully opened the door and stepped into the breaker room. One sequence of events involving resetting the power while keeping Funtime Freddy at bay later, you stepped out of the room exhausted and rattled. You couldn't tell what was more burned into your brain, the bear's shrill voice calling for you while he searched around the room or his high pitched puppet telling him to go back to sleep or that the noise was because of mice. All that mattered was you survived and once you made it out of here this nightmare would be over, that is, after crawling through Ballora Gallery a second time. The cycle of crawling and listening for the music box began anew, only now you really didn't hear her this time around. You weren't sure if whether that was a good thing or not. The tension felt even higher than the last time you did this (something you didn't think was possible). Just the thought that you could run into her at any minute and with no way to anticipate it sent chills all over your body. If you had to guess, she must've gone back to her stage for the time being and was resting(?).  After several minutes, you began to relax ever so slightly as the vent to the control module drew ever closer, right as you were starting to feel optimistic you heard a sickening *crunch*. The "letter" from earlier had slipped out from your jeans pocket and ended up under your knee, flattening it. It startled you enough to the point that you might have yelped in surprise if the situation wasn't so dire. Which it would be soon.
"Is someone there?" a feminine voice called out, much to your horror. That voice couldn't belong to anyone else but Ballora and once again you found yourself entranced by her, despite being in a perilous position where one small mistake would spell out certain death. And yet, you found yourself wanting to call out to her, to answer the woman's question, to just have a chance to speak with her even for a moment. Her soft, soothing voice spoke again, "I can hear someone creeping through my room." Resisting the temptation, you wisely held your tongue and stayed silent for what felt like a minute or two (maybe 3 for good measure) before pressing forward leaving the crumpled paper behind in your haste. Much to your relief, Ballora lost interest not long afterwards. "Perhaps not." the ballerina's words echoed through the room one last time before you slid yourself inside the vent's entrance leading to your sanctuary on the other side. "Good night Ballora" you said to yourself quietly as you worked your way through the vent walls. The vent doors automatically shut behind you once you slid back into the control module, signifying that your venture was a success. With your tasks done for the night, HandUnit gave the all clear to return home. You nearly cried hearing those sweet, sweet AI generated words. The nightmare was over . . . for now at least.
After what felt like an eternity of walking, you made it to your front door. After fiddling with the lock & key in total darkness for a few seconds, the door opened and you quickly made your way inside (after doing a double take just to make sure none of your coworkers possibly followed you home). Slamming the door shut, you slumped downward and let your back rest against the door as the weight of the world finally caved in. You felt like you had just stepped out of a warzone and could only stare blankly at the carpet in front of you, just one night ago you were enjoying yourself at a new job where everything seemed normal and absolutely nothing could go wrong. Now here you were having to come to grips with the fact that children's entertainment robots were fully sentient and ENTIRELY capable of killing you at any given opportunity like some sort of syrupy sweet Terminator. The world seemed to spin around as you slowly stood up, after getting your bearings your first instinct was to run over to the kitchen sink and vomit. With that out of your system, it was time for bed. Despite your best efforts, you couldn't get any sleep that night. You'd spent most of the night staring up at the ceiling, anytime you managed to close your eyes and rest you'd wake up not long after in a cold sweat. The experiences from tonight were still so fresh in your mind that any attempt to sleep was hindered by nightmares about animatronic bears or being trapped under a desk while baby dolls tried to pry their way in. And then there were dreams about Ballora. Despite her being just as deadly as the others, your brain just couldn't conjure up any kind of horrific imagery and at worst you just found yourself back in her gallery, crawling through the darkness. If there was one thing you were to say was nice to have experienced though, it was getting to actually see Ballora up close and hear her voice for the very first time even if for only a few moments. Eventually you gave up on sleep and decided to just to spend the rest of the night watching tv on the couch. There wasn't much on at this hour, news, documentaries, reruns of shows that ended decades ago. You eventually settled for some crappy, cheaply animated soap opera about a vampire and a woman. Anything to get your mind off of work and the fact that you would have to go back at some point. After an episode or two, something about it stuck with you despite it's (lack of) production value. The idea of a vampire, an eldritch monster being able to fall in love with a normal suburban woman just filled you with such a strong sense of hope and desire. When you first realized your crush for Ballora, you thought you were crazy but now, knowing that she was a truly living being that while dangerous, still had her own hopes, fears, dreams, and a soul, it made you start wondering; maybe it could work?

Return to Shirogasu Island
I have been watching My friend stream this game lately, and it is like, the definition of a Hidden gem 
the best way I can describe it, so far, is that it's kinda like Danganronpa put into a more ‘traditional’ Whodunnit plot, and if the 'Worst Boi'(The Byakuya or Nagito type, namely the former) was the Protagonist, it follows a detective who goes undercover investigating the death/supposed suicide of a wealthy man, going the Island which the man had been invited too. Meeting several other guests with there own sorts of Quirks, before a Guest ends up dying there and thus this has to be investigated as well.  I think that is the most I can say on the actual plot without delving mildly into spoilers.
The Detective is an Asshole and is oh so Hilarious for it, he has several insulting bits of narration, its nonchalantly dropped that he has ties to the Mafia, he is like, so horrible and the Banter he has with the character Neneko(Who acts...A Lot like Toko from DR srsly it's almost like she wrote this) is great. There is also a young girl named Aurora I think who he actually ends up being really sweet towards, which results in a Dynamic like, as Austa put it comparing him with Aurora to him with everyone else

I have not finished the Game, so this is not really a Full review, but it is great so far and my Friend who has gone further said the rest is good too. Its funny, charming, has an interesting and entertaining story and Characters, and it is so damn underrated it does not even have a tv tropes page, seriously give this damn game more love

Well, in The Beginning . . . there was a man in a kilt.
I’ve always figured that if there’s something you want to do, you should start doing it, and if it’s the right thing, the universe kind of comes out to meet you. So, I started writing a novel about a man in a kilt, and the universe brought me a television show.
I’ve been indirectly responsible for a lot of strange things since I wrote Outlander – from:
. . . five seasons (so far) of a hit TV series
. . . the names of dozens of purebred dogs, racehorses and housing developments
. . . thousands of babies named Brianna or Jamie (no one has ever, to my knowledge, named a child ‘Murtagh’, which is puzzling . . .)
. . . Lord John Grey’s Tea
. . . symphonic band compositions
. . . a musical
. . . a Scottish woolen mill specialising in tartan
. . . a marvelous pair of cookbooks
. . . three million knitted cowls
. . . dozens of female fans who lower their trousers at book signings to show me ‘Da mi basia mille’ tattooed on their tailbones (as my husband remarked to me, ‘Well, how many people can say,“Kiss my ass” in classical Latin?’)
. . . a 72% increase in Scottish tourism (as Visit Scotland was kind enough to tell me), and
. . . an excellent whisky called ‘Sassenach’
But this book may be one of the strangest, and definitely one of the best!
I’m deeply honoured that Sam and Graham have asked me to write the foreword to one of the most interesting, unusual (to put it mildly . . .) and hilarious books I’ve read in a long time. I’m not quite sure what you’d call it, but then I’m used to not being able to describe my own books in twenty-five words or less, so this is probably not a problem.
To start with, it’s a buddy book. Two good friends banter (and bicker) their way across the Scottish Highlands, risking life and limb in that casual way that makes men attractive. Why? Well, because they’re both Scottish and they have both been a large part of Outlander (not just the television show, but the whole weird phenomenon), have realised that they are Scottish (wearing a kilt every day for two years will do that to you), and want to find out where their heritage came from and what being Scottish actually means (aside from being born liking whisky)
It’s also a road book. (Think Jack Kerouac, but with fewer drugs, more paragraphs and no sex. Well, almost no sex . . .).
Our two friends are in fact making a television series about several historical locations in the Highlands. Accompanied by a small film crew – including a talented makeup artist and a drone operator – they visit spectacular historical locations in the Scottish Highlands to learn the true history of some of the best-known massacres, fights, betrayals, beheadings, and other typically Scottish recreational activities. This is the story of that journey, accomplished via an aged Fiat camper van, tandem bike, kayak and any number of other improbable modes of transport that only make sense to people suffering from testosterone poisoning.
And on their way, they talk. Not only to each other, but to themselves. In some of its phases, the book is a twin memoir. Each man recalls his life as an actor – in bits – because every actor (like every writer) pretty much makes it up as they go along. Which means a lot of the stories are of the kind that are only funny to the protagonists with twenty years’ perspective, but are endlessly entertaining to the spectators.
These reminiscences include a good many stories from the Outlander set, as well. I’m only on set myself intermittently, but I do recall the day in Season Two when Sam’s horse – which he was preparing to mount – decided to take its mother’s advice and relieve itself before setting out (there’s reason why most costumes are made in multiples). And another occasion during Season Two wherein Graham was required to ride a mechanical horse (as the director said to me, ‘It looks like shit, but you won’t be able to actually see it on film’)
The mechanical horse was carried on the back of a truck, followed by another truck with a camera, and Graham was supposed to leap into the mechanical horse’s saddle while moving (supposedly jump-ing from another horse). This being television, they filmed the scene many, many times to ensure enough footage to get the effect they were after. When they finally stopped, Graham staggered downhill from the road where they’d been doing this, pausing by me and Anne Kenney (brilliant writer of the other episode in that block of filming) to say, ‘I’ve just been having a conversation with my balls. They said, “We’d really rather you didn’t do that again”’. And staggered on, muttering, ‘I knew I should have worn a cup this morning . . .’.
And finally, there’s the actual history of the ‘clan lands’, woven through this tale of a journey. The travelers reach the most interesting/famous/relevant Highland locations, where they do learn what their history and heritage are, assisted by some of the most colorful inhabitants of those places.
So, you’re actually getting four books in one! (A real bargain . . .).
But the most important part of this book is the friendship between its authors, that colours and illuminates every page.
I was both intrigued and immensely entertained by the story, but also touched on a personal level. One of the most unexpected aspects of the whole ‘Outlander phenomenon’ is the amazing way in which it seems to draw people together. People read the books and watch the show – and they want to talk about it. So, they form fan groups and book clubs and Facebook forums, and deep, lasting friendships, all because of a shared love of a story.
I will always recall one woman who brought me a book at a signing, who told me that she lived alone, had been alone for many years, seldom got out and had no family – but that she’d become attracted to the story, found others who felt likewise, and who invited her to go with them to book-signings, premieres and conventions. ‘Now I have friends!’, she said. She cried, and so did I.
I hope you’ll feel that sense of friendship in these pages.
A final word, since this book is all about returning to one’s roots: Some years ago, one of my novels won the Corine International Prize for Fiction, and I was invited to go to Germany to accept the award. This was rather a Big Deal for the German publisher, and they took advantage of my presence to have me interviewed by the entire German press corps; newspapers, magazines, radio, television, literary journals, you name it. By the end of the week I was sleep deprived and a bit glazed over when I met a nice gentleman from one of the literary journals.
Delightful man, he went on at great (and flattering) length about the books. He loved my narrative drive, my characters were tremendous, my imagery transcendent!
So I’m sitting there in a pleasant daze, thinking, ‘Yes, yes, go on . . .’, when he suddenly said, ‘There is just one thing I wonder: can you explain to me, what is the appeal of a man in a kilt?’.
Well, had I been totally conscious, I might not have said it (then again . . .). Anyway, I looked at him for a moment and said, ‘Well . . .I suppose it’s the idea that you could be up against a wall with him in a moment.’
<ahem>
A few weeks later, home again in Arizona, I get a packet of interview clippings from the German publisher, and on the top is the interview from that journal. The publisher had attached a Post-it note, saying, ‘I don’t know what you said to this man, but I think he is in love with you!’.
A man in a kilt. A very powerful and compelling image, yes . . . And now you have two of them . . .

I’m close to halfway done with Midnight Sun and I have some thoughts. It bothers me how much SMeyer writes Bella as the definition of “not like the other girls,” but also how much I see myself in Bella. Disgusting, considering Bella is Smeyer’s self insert. The clumsiness, not wanting to be the center of attention, being nerdy, being terrible at sports and dancing. I can relate to that stuff. Certainly not the fiction protagonist I’d want to find myself in.
Some other things that intrigue me; was Edward always unable to put together Charlie‘s thoughts? I don’t remember that. Granted I haven’t read the books or watched the movies since I was a young teenager. I was also wondering about Tanya and the Denali Clan, did they have much of a role? Something that surprises me is how teenager-ish Edward’s actions/thoughts can be. When I first read the books I always saw him as mature, so sure of himself. I guess one would be if they were as old as he is but Midnight Sun really reminds us that this emo sparkle boy is mentally 17.
Speaking of the Cullens, I love how much I’m seeing of their banter and personalities compared to what I remember from Bella’s POV. I’m really into the potential vampire lore that Smeyer denied us. I feel like if this story wasn’t so focused on Edward and Bella we could’ve seen that stuff fleshed out. Where do other vampires live in the US? Where in other countries? What are their laws or activities? We see so little of other vampire clans outside of the big battle scene in Breaking Dawn (?) or when we occasionally are introduced to the Cullens’ vampire friends. You’re telling me that Edward is the only vampire to ever develop feelings for a human? That every other group of vampires just see humans as prey? I know the Cullens are considered different from many for being “vegetarians” and for living as a family but still.. Also! Stephanie Meyer, your obnoxious Mormon ass incidentally went and wrote Alice as sapphic. I bet you’d hate it if you knew some of your readers thought this. The way Alice talks about loving Bella?? Hello??? Edward even refers to Alice being Bella’s girlfriend. I know this is being used in the way straight women refer to their friends as “girlfriends,” which is super obnoxious to me as a lesbian, but come on..! Alice is sapphic and polyamorous. I’m calling it. She is happy for Edward and Bella and truly loves Jasper but she has feelings for Bella too. No one can take this from me. Okay, so onto another topic. We all hate how racist this series is, it’s so focused on white people and has racist writing choices. I would’ve liked if the Cullens were diverse. Not just in race but in sexuality, gender, perhaps there could’ve been disabled vampires? Think about it; these are killing machines with great physical ability, would any physical disability they had as humans be gone with their change to vampirism? I think it would be good writing and good representation to have say, a vampire in a wheelchair for example. As someone with dyscalculia and ADHD I would enjoy reading about learning disabilities as well. Meyer writes about how smart Edward and Bella are in academics. I grew up learning that I would never truly be perceived as smart because of my dyscalculia and other learning disabilities.
I also like the idea of a trans vampire, someone who spends their new life as an immortal working on their gender expression how they see fit and becoming happiest with their body. They have all the time in the world after all. Obviously give me all of the lgbt vampires please. Onto race diversity, I had a thought, could a Native vampire exist in the Twilight canon? Imagine a Native who feels conflicted with their new vampire identity and how their heritage warns them to stay away from the Cold Ones. Becoming the thing your family and community despise and having to decide where your loyalties lie, if your loved ones would even accept you? Smeyer did the Quileute tribe soooo fucking dirty. I am so pissed. Who the fuck... what the fuck? Who the fuck involves an indigenous community in their writing, without permission, and doesn’t give said tribe funds from their earnings from the book(s)?? This lady’s racist, homophobic, slut shaming, holier than thou attitude is so prevalent in her writings and it worries me because she influenced a whole generation of young teenagers with her books. I was one of them. Not to mention she tried to play off that Edward and Jacob’s treatment of Bella were somehow romantic and healthy! Today’s young adults saw that shit! You’re a grown woman Stephanie. You romanticized toxic behaviors in your books targeted toward a young and impressionable audience. I’m thinking about how many of today’s preteens and teenagers will go read the Twilight saga for the first time due to Midnight Sun’s release. They will think that racism, predatory relationships and shaming girls for liking popular things (See Bella “not like other girls” Swan for reference) is acceptable. I’m a hopeless romantic, a dreamer, so I hate when these books easily make me go “aww” internally even when I know it’s not “aww,” it’s unhealthy. I’m old enough to know what is a red flag in Bella’s relationships but not everyone who reads them is old enough to understand that yet. Baby me certainly didn’t see how Edward and Jacob were both not good for Bella. I was too caught up in the Team Edward and Team Jacob craze. (Baby me was Team Jacob by the way. I’m a trashy furry who loves werewolves, I can’t help it.)
My final thoughts for now anyway: in the dedication our wonderful author says that this book is for the fans who were first young teens when reading Twilight, something like that. She writes that she hopes we achieved our dreams. Not the exact wording but you get it. I remember when I read that dedication page I felt immeasurable sadness. I haven’t reached my goals, lived my dreams or become a successful young adult. I’m still that socially awkward, clumsy, unremarkable person I was when I first read and watched this story. (Ew. Once again why do I sound like how Smeyer describes Bella? I’m cringing.) I’m stuck being a nobody because I’m too scared to change. I know this rant is about Midnight Sun/the Twilight saga and isn’t about me but damn that shit hit me like a ton of bricks.

Hehe I also think apple boy relates to the part about social interactions as he is just a cute precious shy boy that doesn’t have the best communication skills (˶◕‿◕˶✿)

as i said earlier, it is an ungodly length but i hope you can enjoy my late night, book-drunk opinions anyway!

guess who just finished “ruin and rising”?
i’m seriously not okay. someone send help. i got lots of thoughts, none of which you are obligated to read but this seems like the best place to share.
oh and spoilers, duh.
for starters. woah.
i can’t say it was what i expected but i had known that what my heart really wanted was kinda far out of reach. the ending felt real and feasible, complete with love and loss.
in terms of “ruin and rising” alone, i think it was possibly the strongest of the three books. the pacing was good, nothing felt like it dragged on too long or went too fast for its own good. i think that was really important as well, considering the fact that there was always something going on. literally,, always. no one ever got a damn break.
mal’s “death” hurt me more then i had expected. which honestly leads back to one of my main gripes with this story. the love square (which i elaborate on later in this post, just hold on a bit). i’m not going to lie. i hated mal. through the middle of “siege and storm” up to page 168 of “ruin and rising” (and even then it was a long road from hate to crying over him). he was an ass, i think we can all admit that. for awhile there, i even jumped on the “fuck mal” train and had no plans to stop at any station anytime soon. for the longest time, the relationship with alina felt so fragile and forced, like the only reason it existed was because leigh had written it into existence. though, as i read on, i saw why it was so strained and saw the eventual resolution, which i will admit i was happy with. mal and alina, however annoying and troupe filled their personalities were, did develop as characters. and their relationship made some semblance of sense in the grand scheme of things. does that mean i forgive the “on-again-off-again”, “cold-shoulder”, “we-cant-be-together-in-this-lifetime” bullshit? no. does that mean i suddenly love mal? also, no. does that mean i ship them? ugh slightly. does that mean in a magical dream world where i got to chose what happened, they’d still end up together? impossible to say. BUT i can say, that they deserved each other. and i am happy that they got their peace together like they both always wanted (no matter how out of place it felt at any point), especially considering the fact that she literally had to kill him.
my dear dear darkling... i knew what fate awaited you and yet, when the time came... it hurt just the same.
okay,, that was a bit dramatic. but come on. leigh wrote a damn good villain with aleksander morozova. i meAN, thE lAYERS. he was a horrible person and yet, so many of us still love him. he killed for fun, manipulated no matter the cost, preyed upon the weak because he could, literally blinded his own mother and still! i can’t help but love him. there was so much human woven into his darkness. the moments of simple longing, of exhaustion, of loneliness. in all honesty, if there had been a way to humanize him, to erase or explain away his atrocities and have him just be aleksander again, i feel like i would do it. but, in the context of the story i do understand why it wasn’t possible. redemption for the darkling was off the table, no matter how much humanity still remained. but that’s what makes him such a good character. you want him to be different because you can see the good and all the potential for things to change, for them to rule ravka side by side, but at the same time, he’s the same man who is still actively creating more shadow demon creatures to eat whoever he wishes. you can’t resist him and that’s why he’s so wonderful, yet horrifying at the exact same time. (though don’t worry i am still a trash can and the darklina ship is still superior in the love square. again, i promise i will get there).
i feel like i have to talk about how much i loved the “secondary characters” (i struggle to call them that because they actually run this shit). i will say, at first, i hated zoya. i am not a big fan of the “mean girl” troupe or the “i’m-prettier-than-you-and-i-know-it” thing but... she really grew on me. i looked forward to zoyas comments and constant bitchiness, as did the characters in the books. and when she left the note and the blue kefta with alina in the epilogue,, oh god my heart. and the ragtag crew of grisha making up the remainder of the second army were amazing. their banter and dialogue were some of my favorite scenes to read in “ruin and rising” and i want books just filled with them and only them. david and genya deserve the damn world, adrik was so great, nadia and tamar are so precious, and i will miss harshaw’s weird ass more then you’ll ever know. don’t even get me started on misha and oncat. they are the true stars of this series, you cannot convince me otherwise. god i love them all so much, what a brilliant cast of characters. except the apparat. fuck the stupid ass apparat.
i know what you’re thinking. “you forgot nikolai.” no. i promise you, i most certainly did not. i just love him so much he gets his own chunk.
i mean, how could he not? he’s one of those rare, genuinely perfect characters that are impossible to not love. and i don’t mean perfect because he has no flaws or he’s written unnaturally, i mean perfect because of all of his flaws. he is arrogant and calculating, brash and unapologetic in his ways, but he’s also kind and caring, witty and charming and way too clever for his own good. i rooted for him more then i have ever rooted for someone in my entire life. he made everything ten times better. you can always count on his ass to pop up in a flying ship with a shiny pair of boots, a witty remark, a new plan, and too many ideas.
now, the important business... the ominous love square.
i think the words i used were “one of my main gripes with the story” which is true, but i think leads to a bigger issue with some of the characterization in the story. the “love square” was a term i thought of in relation to the many overlapping and confusing ships that center around alina (obviously being mal, the darkling, and nikolai). all of the ships were so entertwined and written over top of one another that there was no other way for me to describe it and the square seemed like a nice enough analogy. it just felt like way too much on everybody’s plates.
i love nikolai and alinas friendship. i mean, LOVED it. because i loved it so much, i found the little nods to a ship odd and unnecessary. their story line was very focused on the fact that ravka would need a king and queen, hence the scene where he gives her the emerald and all but proposes right then and there. however, that scene would have made scene and carried the same weight had there not been the splashes of romance both before and after. now, i understand why people ship them. and honestly, if under different circumstances, i probably could’ve and would’ve shipped them myself. they would have had one of the best marriages in a society where you didn’t get to marry for love. but it just made everything more complicated. people would’ve speculated on a ship had there been no kisses or pining, soley based on the possibility of a marriage and because of their close friendship so, why was the canon addition of it necessary? i just couldn’t get behind it when i loved their platonic relationship so much and when there were two stronger and more developed ships, waging war in the background.
now, my final bone to be picked... let’s be real for a second, alina in “shadow and bone” sucked. she was annoying and had no personality beyond being a sad, lonely, orphan in the darklings sparkly new grisha world. though i will say, in the later two books, i grew to like her. her character development did its job and i actually think she grew to be a pretty good protagonist. she did her best with the cards she was dealt and i think she did really well. however, her inability to pick a boy constantly bothered me. after being in love with her best friend for literal years, she is really ready to be be the first lady of the second army. and yes. sure you could justify it. she wasn’t getting letters in return, she’d been away for months, she was adapting to her new life, the darkling made her feel seen and wanted which is all a very new feeling to her. but then she goes right back to mal after he makes a confession that he didn’t realize he loved or needed her until she was gone for months (this was one of my biggest problems with mal. my problem only grew when he spent the entirety of “siege and storm” being a dick. but like i said,, we have reconcilied. we are fine now). there were times throughout the series where i genuinely didn’t understand why they were together, why i liked them together, or why i even wanted them to end the series together. alina even asks mal at the end of “ruin and rising” if there entire relationship was based solely on the fact that mal was the last amplifier and the fact that she even had to ask really says something. was their entire romance because of the amplifier? was it because of the “we-are-just-meant-to-be-together” thing? or was there actual chemistry? i really couldn’t tell sometimes. and the darklina ship was even more twisty and winding. he went from telling her deep dark secrets because he wanted to hear the girl he loved say his name to literally threatening everyone she loves because he wants her weak and all to himself. like,, whAt? (again,, layers) and don’t even get me started on the darkling and alina apparition interactions. those were a wild fucking ride. i felt like i was getting manipulated along with the both of them in those. but maybe that was the point of the darkling and alinas relationship. it was supposed to be so horrible yet so electric that you couldn’t pull away. but i doubt the same was meant to be said for mal and alina.
now i feel like i may be coming off in the wrong way. i loved more about this series then i didn’t. but me gushing about every fine detail and conversation that made my heart melt wouldn’t make for the most interesting read, if it was even coherent. all in all, i think it’s safe to say the grisha trilogy is great. does that mean it doesn’t have flaws? of course not. does that mean the flaws outweigh the good and the actual point of the story? absolutely not. my small complaints about a few things really do not take always from the fact that i love this series. i would love anything written by leigh bardugo, especially in the grishaverse.
if you’ve made it this far, that’s commitment. thank you brave soldier. don’t take anything i’ve said with anything more than a grain of salt. seriously. if this is your favorite series, don’t let my lil complaints ruin your day. because really, the good outweighs the bad here tenfold. i’m just a girl with a lot of opinions and a platform to share them at four am... it’s a dangerous game.
but, goodbye grisha trilogy. you have served me well and i will return to reread you soon. but for now i will do a lot of writing (i already have so many fic ideas brewing) and read all the fan fiction and tumblr posts i’ve been avoiding for fear of spoilers.

I had a moment of intense self-centredness and, internally, wailed: Why isn’t the world filled with more books that appeal exactly to me??? 
I’ve concluded that it’s like I have an inner story-troll sitting inside me shouting: Tell me a story! I try to appease it by presenting it with books, one at a time, and seeing how it reacts.

The City of Brass by S.A. Chakroborty (narrated by Soneela Nankani): I think this Middle East-inspired fantasy was just not the story I was in the headspace for -- it was longer, with more complicated worldbuilding and fewer answers. Possibly I’d have followed the political intrigue of Daevabad better had I read this in one gulp (I got halfway through the 20-hour-long audiobook before it was due back and I read other books before picking up the ebook). I liked the two protagonists, enough that I’m curious about what happens to them next, but the second book is 23 hours long and undoubtedly won’t resolve everything either. Maybe another day.
Tuyo by Rachel Neumeier: Ryo is left as a “tuyo” -- a sacrifice to be killed by an enemy -- as a sign that his tribe will withdraw from the Ugaro’s war with the Lau. But his captor doesn’t want to kill him, he wants Ryo to help him stop the war. Neumeier effectively creates tension between people who are polite, honest and honourable, and shows an intriguing relationship, defined by mutual respect, fealty and something more familial. There’s also some unusual magically-defying-physics-as-we-know-it worldbuilding but apparently I was far more interested in the character dynamics. I enjoyed this. Sequel, please?
From All False Doctrine by Alice Degan: My favourite book this year! Toronto, August 1925. Elsa Nordqvist, who hopes to write her MA thesis on a recently-discovered Greek manuscript, is at the beach with a friend when they meet two foster-brothers. This meeting deftly sets up everything which follows. The cover says “A Love Story” but this is also like a cross between a Golden-Age mystery novel and a fairytale retelling, with bonus academia and Anglicanism. I really like how much these characters value their friendships, their lively, intelligent and often honest conversations, and the way the romance unfolds. It also feels like a story written just for me and a hard one to review because my reaction has been very personal.
The Haunting of Tram Car 015 by P. Djèlí Clark (narrated by Julian Thomas): Set in the same city as A Dead Djinn in Cairo, this novella follows two agents from the Ministry of Alchemy, Enchantments and Supernatural Entities as they investigate a possessed tram car. The world-building is vivid and cleverly, thoughtfully, imaginative. But, perhaps because of the mood I’m in and because this story isn’t interested in exploring the personal lives of its detectives, I have no feelings about this.
The Angel of Crows by Katherine Addison: Sherlock Holmes wingfic involving Jack the Ripper murders. Not what I’m looking for in a Holmes retelling. But I was sufficiently intrigued by something the author wrote. I really like Crow and Dr Doyle (arguably more than their original counterparts). My interest wavered a bit during the second half. It closely mimics the style and structure of the original mysteries in many ways and that’s not my favourite style. I wanted fewer cases to solve, and more of Crow and Doyle interactions. I liked the ending, enough to be glad that I hadn’t given up halfway through.
Making Friends with Alice Dyson by Poppy Nsowu: Australian YA. Alice plans to spend her final year of high school staying invisible and studying hard, but is thrown into the spotlight after someone posts a video of her dancing with Teddy Taualai. I loved how intensely this captures Alice’s emotions and perspective, and how the story explores that people have different emotions, perspectives and needs. Alice seems to me like someone who might be on the autism spectrum -- and whether or not that’s what the author intended, it’s great to see characters like her represented. I wish it had unpacked her relationship with her parents more, but that didn’t negate how much I enjoyed this. 
Always and Forever, Lara Jean by Jenny Han (narrated by Laura Knight Keating): I can’t remember why, after I read To all the boys I’ve loved before and P.S. I still love you in 2017, I decided against reading the third book. It turned out to be my favourite. I loved it! I had a different experience of finishing high school and applying for university, but I find Lara Jean’s perspective intensely relatable: she has strong opinions about aesthetics; she’s nostalgic, introspective, stressed by uncertainty; she enjoys spending time at home with her family. I liked how this book captures her wonder at the intimacy of knowing another person well, and how, although she sometimes worries about their future, she has very few doubts about Peter himself. I haven’t come across very many YA novels in which a teenage girl is so secure being in a relationship. 
The Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley:  After her sister dies, Eva stays with family friends in Cornwall, where she and Katrina spent summers years ago. I wasn’t expecting time-travel. I like time-travel stories, and I like how Kearsley handles it here. Eva’s choices make sense, given her situation, and the story emphasises that, even though she cannot control when she travels in time, there are still many choices she can actively make. So Eva becomes fascinated with 1715, because of the people she meets there and the relationships they develop... but I wanted to spend more time in the present-day Trelowarth, with its rose gardens and new tea room.
Flyaway by Kathleen Jennings: After she receives a mysterious note, nineteen year old Bettina flouts her mother’s rules for ladylike behaviour and embarks on a roadtrip with a couple of forgotten friends in search of her brothers, who disappeared three years ago. I loved some of the descriptions, especially seeing a rural Australian setting for this sort of fantasy. Jennings creates a wonderfully eerie atmosphere and the mystery kept me reading. However, the folktale parts of the story are dark, uncomfortably so. Very successfully Gothic, just ultimately not really my brand of Gothic.
The Duke Who Didn’t by Courtney Milan: There’s something so incredibly soft about this romance -- yet at the same time, it’s about two people who work fiercely towards their goals, worry about things, and are acutely aware of the discrimination they and other they love face as Chinese people in late 19th century England. Chloe and Jeremy’s relationship is characterised by banter and gentle teasing that reveals just well they know and accept and care about each other. Moreover, they have friends and relatives -- and a community -- who are supportive. I really enjoyed reading this and appreciated how low-angst it is.
The Threefold Tie by Aster Glenn Gray: Very tender. The characters convinced me that they were capable of communicating honesty with each other and making an unconventional relationship work. I liked the prose, which is no great surprise. 
Hamster Princess: Whiskerella by Ursula Vernon (aka T. Kingfisher): This time, adventure finds Harriet at home: her parents are throwing a masked ball so she can “meet some nice young princes without terrifying them”. But the princes are all preoccupied with a beautiful stranger, and Harriet is distracted by the mystery: who is this hamster, how did she get in without an invitation and what sort of magic is behind her glass slippers?  I think this is my favourite of Harriet’s adventures (so far). I loved the humour in this one.
Echo North by Joanna Ruth Meyer: When Echo finds her missing father unconscious and half-frozen in the woods, she is given a choice by the white wolf. A retelling of “East of the Sun, West of the Moon” with elements from “Beauty and the Beast” and “Tam Lin” thrown in, this has so many things which appeal to me, including an unexpected and wonderful library. Yet I found it frustrating and slow; the prose and the characters are rather straightforward, and I predicted nearly all the twists (bar the finale). But I believe that this tale could delight a younger, or a less critical reader.
The Disastrous Début of Agatha Tremain by Stephanie Burgis: In the two years since she turned sixteen and dismissed her governess, Agatha has been free to disregard ladylike behaviour, studying the books in her father’s library and teach herself magic. But then her aunt arrives and insists upon Agatha making a social début. This novelette is another story that I suspect I’d like more if it had been longer, if some of its ideas had been expanded upon and some of the relationships been given more space to develop. Agatha’s aunt and her motivations were unexpected, and I wasn’t entirely comfortable or satisfied with how that was resolved.
Snow Day by Andrea K. Höst: This novelette takes place after the Touchstone trilogy, more specifically after In Arcadia. Two outsiders get to see Cass and her family on Snow Day, and reveal a bit about their upbringing on Kolar.  This feels very much like fanfiction which just happens to be written by the author. It is fun to see familiar characters through others’ eyes and the expanded worldbuilding is interesting, but as a narrative, it seemed somewhat incomplete. (Maybe she’s planning something more with these characters?)

I know it’s been a month since part one of this review (which you can read HERE), but I had to collect my thoughts on this book! Not because I had mixed feelings about it - it’s honestly one of the best books I’ve ever read - but because it made me so emotional. I did write a review on Goodreads, which I’m posting below, and after that I’ve included several passages that moved me as I read. I marked a LOT of them (sorry, library), so I hope I can narrow them down. Having said that, this will get long, so more under the cut!

****I guess you can say there are technically spoilers beyond this point, but since this is all historical information, many may already know these details. ***
Before I get into that though, I want to clarify a few questions I brought up when I was only half way through the book. I wondered about their letter writing and why those letters were destroyed. Turns out CS Lewis burned all of the letters he received because people wrote to him about very personal things, and he didn’t want those being published after his death. So, that makes sense, I guess, though it still doesn’t explain what happened to the letters he wrote to her, unless he burned those too after her death for the same reason. Jack (what his close friends called Lewis) had a civil marriage with Joy first because of immigration issues, and she and the boys lived in a separate house. However, they still spent a lot of time at the Kilns (Lewis’s home) and lived there briefly at different times. Their relationship, according to most sources, wasn’t physical at that time (however, does anyone really know for sure except for the two of them?), and the book depicts it that way. The church refused to marry them because Joy was divorced, and this was a major issue for Jack due to his faith. Only after a sympathetic priest married them in a hospital did they consummate the marriage.
The major source material for this book was an unpublished manuscript called Courage containing forty-five love sonnets Joy Davidman wrote to CS Lewis. David Gresham, Joy’s son, found them in the back of a closet in 2013. Most of the chapters in the book start with lines from these sonnets. And these sonnets are definitely intimate and passionate. I’ll confess, it’s a little weird when you imagine that famous picture of CS Lewis we’ve all seen a million times, bald headed with his pipe. Like reading sexy poems someone wrote to your grandpa. Nevertheless, the love story crafted in this book was breathtaking.

I almost don't know where to start with this book, it was so good! The writing style, the phrasing, the characterization, it was all stellar. I felt like I knew Joy personally reading this. I also loved how the author didn't romanticize Joy or Jack (C.S. Lewis). She wrote them flaws and all, including their physical traits. This isn't Hollywood, air brushing the protagonists so they fit society's definition of "sexy." This book proves you don't need attractive people to tell a passionate, romantic love story. Love is so much deeper than that. I think that can sum up this entire book: love sees past our flaws; love is attracted to our minds and our souls, not just our faces and bodies; and love blooms best when it's rooted in a strong friendship.
This book also tackled the sexism rampant in the 1950s and how that impacted Joy, who broke the mold on what a woman should be. It makes you realize how the social norms of the day influenced Lewis's friends and their opinions of Joy. (Tolkien despised her.) You also feel Joy's oppression under these expectations and understand why Jack's friendship meant so much to her. He viewed her as an intellectual equal, something she was desperate for. I also was heartbroken over the poor medical care she received simply because she was a woman, with the doctors often completely ignoring her to address the men in her life and making light of her symptoms. Today, she might have lived.
I refuse to read other reviews because I have a feeling many Christians won't like this book. Joy is not a sanitized Christian heroine. She would definitely fit in more with the "bad girls" of the Bible like Rahab and the woman at the well than she would with Sarah or Hannah. She was a real person who came to faith late in life. She made mistakes even after her conversion, and some of them will make the reader uncomfortable. There were a lot of gray areas in her life and in her relationship with Jack that aren't easy to grapple with. So if you're looking for a black and white, squeaky clean, shining beacon of virtue you'll be disappointed. But if you're willing to take the journey with Joy, it's a fantastic tale!
Now for some of my favorite passages! (The book is in first person from Joy’s point of view):
“What could I have done differently? I begged the tortured Christ in stained glass.
My parents had warned me - Why can’t you be softer, nicer, and kinder? Prettier? More like Renee? {Renee was a cousin and one of her husband’s many affairs.} Why couldn’t I? Was this my punishment for such self-will?”
“I stayed and felt the enormous noise vibrate through my body. Chills ran through me, and I shivered with the unceasing sounds, which were cleansing me, coursing through my veins, through my mind and my spirit. The tenor and fifth ringing together, not synchronized or in harmony but in perfect sublime sound. My boundaries dissolved; transcendence enveloped me. God was with me, and always had been. He was in the earth and the wind, in the ringing and the silence, in the pain and in the glory of my life.”
“In his office Jack didn’t just read; he went deep inside the work his eyes fell upon, taking apart the sentences and themes. And while I was nearby, he would often call my name.
‘Joy,’ he’d say, ‘what do you think . . . ‘
Off we’d go into a theological or thematic discussion. Sometimes I feared I would wake and be back in the rambling, falling-apart house in Staatsburg, Bill stumbling drunk down the hallway smelling of sex and whiskey, and find my time with Jack had only been a dream. But instead I sat in the armchair of his office at the top of the staircase discussing the meaning hidden in stories.”
“It’s not an apology, Jack. Can’t you see? It’s grace, the kind that hunts us down and doesn’t let us go. It brought us together. The grace that keeps the planets in their orbits and causes lilies to open their faces to the sun.” I dared to meet his eyes with mine. “It’s love.”
“No.” I took another sip of sherry. “I’m confused . . . . About Jack, I don’t know. This time it’s not just about some physical need. For goodness’ sake, the man smokes sixty cigarettes a day and then his pipe in between. He’s seventeen years older than I am. But he still has this great gusto for life - for beer and debate and walking and deep friendship. Christianity most definitely has not turned him into a dud. This isn’t some lust-fueled fantasy. It’s the connection between us. The discourse. The empathy. The similar paths. This isn’t some obsession with getting something, Belle. It’s the feeling of finally coming home. basically i just watched megamind and wrote down everything that made me go “hey that’s good”
1. The opening monologue slaps I literally do not care about your “cliches” it’s GOOD
2. “8 days old and still living with my parents...pathetic right?”
3. The idea that Megamind is inherently good since his origin story should have been his dad saying he’s destined for “greatness” but the greatness got cut off uwu
4. Literally just the fact that Megamind was about to go to the Rich Nice House and his destiny changed at the last second,,,everything about this movie makes it a cinematic masterpiece

50. Tropes in this movie in general are so fun. This isn’t some uninspired genre parody. They don’t just subvert tropes in the exact way that you’d expect. I feel like the way that this movie plays with the superhero genre often feels unique and creative

Some people look down upon following structure to a T, but sometimes it’s satisfying when a movie perfectly follows structure and this movie’s structure is flawless

56. Right after fighting w Minion when Megamind looks in a cracked mirror and frowns at his reflection but then changes into someone else, into Bernard, and then smiles? THE CINNAMON TOGROPHY, THE STORYTELLING

When Hal is just an incel whose feeling of entitlement is framed as disgusting and he’s not supposed to be sympathetic and Roxanne’s rejection of him is not framed as evil but rather completely justified? VERY epic of them, this movie would have SMASHED the pop culture scene if it came out today
58. The GRAVITY of the part when Roxanne accidentally reveals Megamind in the restaurant is so powerful that I can STILL barely watch it even though I’ve seen it so many times
59. The part that immediately follows where Roxanne shuts down Megamind is SO well done. Roxanne is giving out some harsh words to our dear protagonist, but she is not framed as the bad guy. The great thing about this scene is that they let Roxanne call out Megamind on how he’s been a jerk and she gets to be RIGHT. How very cash money of them! The emotion here isn’t anger at Roxanne because she’s ~being mean~ to Megamind. It’s a sting over the fact that she’s right, and the heartbreak over the dramatic irony of us knowing that Megamind is becoming a better person and Roxanne having no idea. Now Megamind is left with a decision that will show who he truly is on the inside: he could either retreat back into safe, evil ways for the rest of time because it’s easier to be bad because then no one expects anything from him and rejection is easier to handle, or he could ultimately choose to grow from this and recognize how he was wrong and how he has to change. The execution of this midpoint is exemplary.

Had I encountered Angelo (or a character like him) in any other series, I’m not so sure I’d have liked him to the extent I do in Baccano!. I mean--if I were watching a classic Hollywood Western-style movie with Angelo as the main protagonist, would I have been particularly endeared to him? For all that I like and am entertained by his quintessential old-school badassery in Baccano!, his stoicism and deliberate ‘cool factor’ aren’t necessarily traits I tend to latch onto. I am someone who tends to favor side characters to ‘main characters’, after all...
...so it’s precisely because I’ve encountered a character like Angelo in a series like Baccano! that he’s more endearing to me. Narita absolutely indulgently wrote him in as the archetypal Hollywood Western gunslinging protagonist with Antonio Banderas-style badassery and machismo--but Angelo is ‘main character-ish’ in a series where everyone is ‘main character-ish’, and a mortal among immortals, ancient mercenary groups, martial artists--all manner of as powerful or more powerful people as/than he.
Angelo therefore stands out and and doesn’t stand out at all. He is highly skilled and inherently badass, and his skill is simultaneously exceptional and overshadowed within the Baccano! context. “Stoic badass gunslinger seeks revenge on group who decimated his drug cartel employees” could function as a movei’s main plot all on its own (with “looking after the young boss to whom he’s an unassuming father figure” as a viable B-Plot) -- but he’s just one protagonist out of many in the 2002 arc, and his own plot line is invariably entangled with those of others. 
Angelo is no guard dog, but in some respects he’s a bit of an underdog in Baccano! despite being top dog material for any other series. And I always have a soft spot for the underdogs and underappreciated characters, at the end of the day.
That he’s not stoic 24/7 definitely factors into my endearment as well. His banter scenes with Firo in 2002-A definitely rank as some of my favorite interactions in the whole volume: he’s sincerely apologetic about his ‘ask first, shoot anyway, ask questions after’ incident; and he and Firo have mutual respect for and good chemistry with each other! Which is refreshing! 
(Refreshing not only in the sense that he’s not one of those “stoic stonewalls impassive even with friendly allies” types, but in a meta sense as well. Think about how Firo’s encounters with new one-sided friends have tended to go up until 2002; his encounters and subsequent interactions with Christopher and Ladd, for instance, involve much exasperation on his part, sometimes alongside a helping of irritation and repulsion. It’s refreshing to see him meet someone new and actually get along with the other guy for once. Heck, he doesn’t just admire Angelo’s skill, he openly says he’d love to hire Angelo as a bodyguard. It’s great.)
Admittedly he’s not overly expressive, but still; he’s got his soft spots (bit of a movie buff) and his fury when the Demolisher puts others’ lives in danger. We know, of course, that he loves his unseen wife; what I’d love to know--or better yet, see--though, is what sort of relationship he ends up having with Carlos. In 2002 he’s essentially more of a father figure to Carnea than he is to the son he hasn’t yet met. I’d love to know more about the later years, for Carlos’ sake as much as Angelo’s (and Carnea’s, for that matter).

Anons wanted an explanation for the placements I had on my previous tier list, but upon going back and looking it over, I realized that I wanted to move a few characters around, so I ended up getting a new template and remaking it. 
I wrote little bits about each character [yes, each one] below the cut, but be warned, it’s long. 
SS  
“I love you so much that I would sell my soul to make sure you’re happy”
Lee Everett: Lee is a goddamn legend. He deserves to be at the very top. He’s one of the best protagonists I’ve ever played as in a game, his backstory is incredibly interesting, and his relationship with and dedication to protecting  Clementine never felt forced and is one of the highlights of S1. Even now, having replayed S1 a million times, seeing him get bit and slowly become weaker and weaker as he refuses to give up on Clementine still breaks my salt encased heart. Watching him die in the end never fails to put that lump in my throat. I love him.
AJ: I love this kid. I was so worried that they wouldn’t do him justice when the game was announced and I saw the trailer, but I was floored by just how much I grew to love him. He feels like my kid, my responsibility and I want him to grow up strong and smart, but also human. His voice acting is terrific, and I think he’s one of the best child characters we’ve ever been given in video games. His relationship with Clementine rivals Lee and Clem’s relationship and that’s what I wanted. This kid earned his place at the top. 
S4 Clementine: This Clementine is my absolute favorite. While I love all the Clementine’s across the four seasons, I feel like she truly hit her peak in S4. I fucking love her, I’m proud of who she grew up to be, and seeing her journey to this point only solidifies that she’s my favorite. She’s strong and stern, but she has her softer moments with AJ and Louis/Violet, and what else is there really to say? She’s Clementine.  
Louis: ....Do I really need to explain this? I mean, c’mon. If you’ve been following me for a long time- shit, if you’ve only been following me for a few minutes, then y’all know how much I love Louis. I can say with 100% certainty that Louis is my favorite non-playable character across all four games. I’ve made numerous posts, answered over a hundred asks, written thousands of words about him. Everything about him from his character design, his personality, his traumas, his voice acting, his expressions, his relationship with Clementine and AJ and Violet and Marlon and everyone- He’s the best. I love him. 
Rosie: Rosie is the bestest girl in the world. ‘nuff said.

“I fucking love everything about you.”
S1 Clementine: Alright, before y’all come at me with the whole “Why isn’t little baby Clem SS tier you monster??” let me explain: I adore S1 Clementine. She’s still in S tier, after all. However, after playing through these games several times over again, I realize that this really is just the beginning of Clementine’s character and her growth. She’s lovable, she’s cute, and I want to protect her, but she’s not... a compelling character? She doesn’t fully come into herself and develop a stronger personality until S2. Like I said, I still love her and I can’t deny the impact that she had on the characters and us players, but she’s not my favorite Clementine of the bunch. 
S2 Clementine: I fucking love S2 Clementine. I’d actually say that she’s my 2nd favorite Clementine. I give S2 a lot of well-deserved shit, but she is the high point of it all. Something about her character is compelling to me, like how she’s stuck with a bunch of adults who underestimate her yet want her to do everything for them and she just... is so done with it hahaha. But her growth is what it really does it for me. We went from little baby Clementine who whimpered at a small cut on her finger to a Clementine who fucking sews her own arm up, covers herself in walker guts with barely a flinch, can shoot a gun with great accuracy and take down walkers like they ain’t shit, and can survive and make her own decisions. Also, her instant connection with AJ is great. Love it. Love her. 
Javier Garcia: Yo, I love this beautiful man. This man is honestly the best part of ANF, and without him it would’ve been such a shitty game. I found his backstory as an ex-professional baseball player booted from the league for gambling a cool concept. He’s hilarious and charming, too. Honestly, he deserved a better game with better, y’know? The only reason he’s not SS tier is because of the writing and his nonsense with Kate when you don’t want to romance her. It makes it seem like he led her on and then was like “Wait nevermind lol” which is annoying, but other than that, he’s great. Love his relationships with most of the characters, and the ending he got was pretty good. 
James: I don’t talk about him as much as I should because I find James fucking fascinating. If they ever made a DLC or a mini-game for twdg, I want it to be about James and his journey in finding and joining the whisperers, his relationship with Charlie, and how he escaped them. His views on walkers, his survival and killing skills, his past traumas haunting his every moment for fear that he’ll revert back to what he was, his extreme pacifism that ironically turns violent- just what a cool fucking character. And while he has his wild moments [cave scene, anyone? “Oh ouch!” hahahahahaa] he’s still one of my favorites. 
Violet: Oh, Violet. She’s amazing. I love her so damn much. If there’s ever been a character that I see a lot of myself in, it’s her.... which is why I tend to be a little harsh with her sometimes, but I can’t deny that she’s one of the most well-written characters across the whole series. She’s not perfect [both she and Louis do have their tiny inconsistencies that I blame the writing for] but that’s a good thing. And while I don’t ship her and Clementine, I 100% get why a lot of people do. Their relationship is adorable and way more compelling than her previous relationship with Minerva. 
A
“I love you <3″
Carley: My beautiful girlfriend... you were taken away far too soon. Carley’s one of my favorite characters from S1. I wish we could’ve had more time to explore a relationship between her and Lee, but what we did get is enjoyable. She’s a badass, and I will always love the moment she tells Lilly off for being a little bitch, even though it results in her death. Not a day goes by where I’m not salty about that one. 
Molly: Molly’s a goddamn badass. She scales buildings like it’s nothing, she named her weapon Helga, and her backstory with Crawford and her sister is terrific. Also, she’s funny and I love her. That’s that.
Omid: This dude was literally a light in S1. He brought us some humor when we needed it [ “...You broke that dude’s face.” ] and his relationship with Christa was so sweet. Also, him and Lee bonding over being history nerds? Yes, please. It’s bullshit that he was killed off two seconds into S2 but hey... S2 had a lot of bullshit in it so...  Justice for Omid 2k19. 
Luke: *deeeeeeeep inhale* Big Brother Luke did not deserve that bullshit. Literally one of the best characters in S2 and y’all just.... did him dirty like that. And for what? To make room for Kenny and Jane? Bull. Shit. Luke was so damn good, and the only reason he’s not higher is because of what they did to him after ep3. He starts out so kind and supportive and seriously like a big brother character then SUDDENLY he’s stupid and “makes it” with Jane while walkers are trying to eat us and then he gets himself shot and then fucking dies and akjsjdlkjasdkjaslkjasdklerwedascasads- 
S3 Clementine: ...So, here’s where y’all will probably get pissed. S3 Clementine is my least favorite of the bunch. Don’t get me wrong, I still love her and she is still in A tier, but... how do I explain it? She’s in her 13-year-old, emo/angsty phase and it’s hilarious when it shouldn’t be. There are moments where I do become emotional for her, like when David takes AJ away and Javi hugs her, or when Gabe dies and she’s saying goodbye, or when she gets her first period, y’know moments like that! BUT... then we have moments where Javi goes to talk to her and she’s all “HAVING PEOPLE IS GREAT AT FIRST BUT EVENTUALLY EVERYONE DIES” or when she straight up shoots that guy who gave her faulty bullets OR WHEN SHE’S LIKE “IMMA KILL ME A LINGARD” AND.......... it’s too much for me! I can’t take her seriously when she’s this angsty, even when I understand why she is the way she is. Again, to reiterate, I still love her but in ranking all four Clementines, she comes in last for me.... and I can already hear the shit that’s gonna be thrown my way haha
Conrad: The most underappreciated character in S3 and it’s nonsense. Don’t come for me, but this dude is my favorite npc in S3. I love Conrad, and I wish we got more of him. He does have his own little arch if you keep him alive through the end. His grief over Francine is heartbreaking and his downward spiral that leads him to act out and threaten Javi, Clem, and Gabe so that he can get his revenge is wonderful. And btw, he does apologize for pulling the gun on them and makes up for it in the future. And y’know what moves him up into A tier? The moment you let him kill Badger. One of the best kills of the game. I prefer it over beating the shit out of Badger myself. 
Aasim: This boy is my son, and I’m sorry, but he’s really fucking cool. You’ve got this kid who was sent to Ericson for being a pyromaniac [according to Kent, it’s not actually mentioned in game] and grew into this guy who documents everything so that they’ll have a form of history to look back on and help not repeat mistakes. His banter with Louis is funny, and even though he gets fed up with Louis for not taking anything seriously, he still cares deeply about him given how he reacts when Louis loses his tongue. His crush on Ruby is adorable, too. I just love him, he’s great. 
Marlon: Now, originally I put Marlon in a lower tier [the “I like your role in the story” type of tier] but upon reflection I actually find Marlon to be a compelling character. He’s high on the list because of how well he’s portrayed. Marlon has some of the best voice acting across all the games. There isn’t a single moment where I don’t believe what he’s saying, which says something. There are moments where Clementine will say something and I go, “Really? That’s the take they went with? Okay...” but not with Marlon. For only being in ep1, he played his part really fucking well. I won’t defend any of the shit he pulled because it’s awful, but I understand everything he did. He is a coward, a sheep hiding in a wolf’s coat, pretending that he’s got everything under control and putting all the pressure of a leader onto himself and it eventually breaks him. I know they killed him off to further the plot and show how ruthless AJ can be as a child growing up in the world, but I wish he survived past ep1 so that we could really get into the meat of his character. I’ll say it: I love him as fake-friend-to-full-on-antagonistic-character and his role within the story. 
Mitch: I fucking love Mitch and the only reason he isn’t in SS tier is because of how goddamn dirty the writers did him. You give me this boy- this butterknife wielding, foul-mouthed, angry, hilarious, bomb-making boy and make me fall in love with him and THEN YOU KILL HIM OFF IN THE STUPIDEST WAY POSSIBLE. “Oh, lemme just run at the crazy lady with a knife and- OOF! It appears I’ve been throat stabbed bleh-”  I’ve complained about this since ep2, but lemme say it again: Mitch had so much potential to be an amazing character but never got the chance to because we had to add to the death count and make us more afraid of Lilly even though it didn’t do shit because it was a reaction kill rather than one made out of malice. 
Tenn: Tenn is such a tragic character for me. In my personal canon ending, he dies because he was “messing up again” and AJ shot him. This poor kid was so full of hope that the walkers would go away one day, he’s so genuine and never wants to hurt anyone, even if they’re trying to hurt him, and he’s so fucked up from seeing Minerva that he stops thinking and tries to go to her even as she’s being devoured right in front of him. Tenn is like this game’s Sarah, but done right. He deserved better, but he was a well-written character and I love him. His friendship with AJ was so sweet which makes it even more heartbreaking when he dies. Yet another terrific child character. 
B
“I like you and/or your role within the story”
S1 Kenny: This dude is such a chaotic topic. I feel like 90% of the fandom has an incredibly strong opinion on him, and of that 90%, 45% of people absolutely love him and if you say anything negative you’ll get a boat to the head while the other 45% loathe him. Then you’ve got the 10% who don’t have such strong opinions, and that’s where I fall. I like Kenny, and I like S1 Kenny more than his S2 counterpart. He has a great arch throughout the season regardless if you’re his best pal or not. He has some funny lines, some emotional scenes. I’ll never forget the first time I played the scene where Kenny’s crying over Katjaa’s dead body while Duck is laying against the tree on the brink of death. And I definitely will never forget the part where he finds the boy in the attic. Overall, I like him and what he brought to S1. 
Katjaa: She was really sweet and her death broke my heart. I don’t have too much to say about her, but I liked her a lot. She loved her family and met a tragic end. 
Ben: Fucking Ben, man. This poor kid. Another character with wasted potential. I’ve mentioned this plenty of times before, but I wish we could get an alternative ending where Ben was the only one who survived and became Clementine’s new caretaker. There was so much room for growth. He just wanted to help out but kept screwing up and it’s just.... sad. 
Christa: I’ll be honest, the first time I ever played S1, I didn’t like Christa. Something about her rubbed me the wrong way and I didn’t care about her as much as I did Omid. However, the more times I replayed it, the more I grew to love her. She’s strong but sweet, and you can’t deny how much she loves Omid. And while I wish we did get to know what happened to her in S2, I can live with it remaining unknown.  
Chuck: As much as I like our guitar playing hobo friend who deserved so much more, I would probably put him a tier lower if it weren’t for the advice that he gives Lee on the train. Because of him, Lee stopped treating Clementine entirely like a little girl in need of protection and cut her hair, taught her to use a gun, and furthered their communication by building a plan together. Without Chuck and his wise hobo words, Lee might’ve fucked both of them over. Also, Chuck’s pretty badass with that shovel, he got a lot of chuckles out of me, but his death was off screen and disappointing. 
Andy St John: Okay. Okay okay okay. Andy. He is so high here [and so much higher than his mom and brother] because to me, he’s the scariest of the St John’s. Why? Because he’s the most normal-appearing of the three. He acts and talks like any normal guy would. He’s someone that I could see myself running into in real life. He’s so good at hiding how fucked up he is from everyone, unlike his brother who you can just look at and go “hahahahaha no thanks” and his mother who’s character design is just awful. I find him to be the strongest of the three, the smartest and the most dangerous. And the final fight between him and Lee is amazing. I love how you can be so furious with him that you keep punching him even after the prompt goes away and then his face goes all purple and swollen. Easily the greatest antagonist in S1.
Eddie: This dude is the best character to come out of the 400 Days dlc. End of story. 
 Alvin: He gave me a juice box and that automatically puts him here. Real great guy but we didn’t get too into his character. Wish we could’ve, though.  
Rebecca: She grew on me tbh. Didn’t like her in ep1 when she was being all pissy and all, but for the most part, she’s pretty good. 
Mike: I will forever wish the writers went through with the concept of Mike being one of the guys who attacked Christa because then he could’ve had a better character backstory. Regardless, I still like him. He’s pretty funny. 
Nick: Nick? Oh, you mean PURE WASTED POTENTIAL. I mean, they really did give us this super flawed but sympathetic and interesting character and kill him off-screen. They really did that. Honestly, S2 really pisses me off sometimes for the way they treated these characters. It all goes downhill once everyone escapes. Yeah, yeah, blah blah not everyone gets a meaningful death blah blah but y’know what? You can do better than that. I loved Nick and I was so excited to see what they’d do with him in the end but NOPE! Justice 4 Nick 2k19
Pete: What a good dude. He stuck by Clementine’s side even when everyone thought she was bit. Love him. Wish we saw more of him. 
Sarah: Ha. Ha. PURE WASTED POTENTIAL 2.0. What else needs to be said? This girl had the foundation for a great character but again, NOPE! I really liked Sarah! I wanted to teach her to use a gun to protect herself! The loss of her father fucking broke her and it was hard to watch but I wanted more and just ahaklsdjlaskjdlkakjaskjsaadkljas ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh-
Ava: Yo. Ava’s a fucking gorgeous badass. Really liked her and how she was sweet on Clementine. Also, it’s interesting that she stuck by David’s side like that. 
David: I have a lot of mixed feelings about David. On one hand, the complicated relationship between him and Javier is good, even if it’s a little bullshit at times. On the other hand, David’s an asshole.  But he’s a great antagonistic character. I do love that about him. The shit with him and Kate was a little annoying, but only because they didn’t ever elaborate on anything. On what level was the marriage fucked? Was it straight-up abusive? What happened to David’s first wife? Why did Kate and David get married in the first place? I got questions! But, like Javier, I think David deserved a better game with better writing. 
Jesus: This dude parkour kills walkers. Pretty fucking badass. 
Tripp: I feel like I don’t like Tripp as much as some people. I like him fine, but I know a lot of folks gush about him. I think he’s a good dude, a little pushy with Eleanor, but he’s loyal and strong. 
S2 Lilly: I fucking hate Lilly. I hate her so goddamn much. She pushes every wrong button with her bullshit “Where's our new recruits?? Lee would be so disappointed knowing he taught you all the wrong things! You’re one of my people now, Clementine” AND THE GODDAMN “Yes, Ma’am” SHIT. Nothing irks me more than every time someone from the delta acts like Lilly’s the baddest bitch and call her “Ma’am” I HATE IT AND I HATE HER. SHE KILLED MITCH. SHE KIDNAPPED MY CHILDREN. SHE DARES TO TRY AND HURT LOUIS LIKE HE’S NOTHING. AND I HATE EVERYTHING ABOUT HER....... That being said, y’all are probably thinking “wtf if you hate her so much why isn’t she in F tier???” and that’s because no other antagonist in these games has ever gotten this strong of a reaction out of me. Lilly is a damn good antagonist. She’s not perfect, and there are definitely things I would change or add, but she does her job and makes me absolutely livid [yeah yeah I know ha ha ha ha] every time she’s on screen doing her bullshit. I hate her and that counts for something. She’s easily the best “villain” in the entire series. 
Ruby: I love my funny little hot-headed medic. Ruby’s amazing and I love her. 
Willy: This kid really grew on me. I thought he was weird and creepy at the beginning but I adore him now. His brotherly relationship with Mitch should’ve been explored more, and at times his voice acting is kind of jarring, but I still love him. 
C
“You’re fine, I guess...”
Duck: He’s fine. I like Duck. I like the “what if” scenarios we’ve come up with surrounding his character, and his death always puts a lump in my throat, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to say I love him, y’know?
Doug: Again, he’s fine. He has some funny moments when you save him, and he’s got a cool little panda bear on his sweater but... yeah. He’s okay. 
Mark: Oh hai Mark. He’s cool, and the reason he’s not lower is because the iconic moment of finding him in the hidden room with his legs chopped off choking out the words “Don’t... eat... dinner” forever haunts my nightmares. 
Russell: I’m not a big fan of most of the playable 400 Days characters, but I think if I had to pick a favorite, it’s Russell. His backstory of being with the group that believed in the power of 7′s [I think it was 7 I dunno going off of memory here] was cool and his weird thing with Nate was fun and disturbing. He’s a pretty cool character. 
Carlos: I’ve made posts about Carlos before and how I think he had a lot of potential, but looking strictly at his role in the game and I’m left underwhelmed. I did get a lot of shit for where I placed him in my previous tier because he was [and still is] above S2 Kenny but I’m not going to lie and say I like Kenny more than him because... I don’t. I just think Carlos should’ve been given more development.  
Carver: A cool antagonist who was defeated waaaaaay too early in the game. They were doing a fantastic job at making me hate him with his treatment of Clementine, beating the shit out of Kenny, murdering Alvin and pulling all that shit with Rebecca, but killing him off so quickly didn’t make it feel as satisfying. Again, underwhelming. 
Sam: This pup betrayed me and he ain’t no Rosie, but we played frisbee so he gets a C I guess
Gabe: Y’know, Gabe could’ve been so good. But every time I play through ANF, he ends up annoying me more than Ben. What does that tell you? He’s fine, but he could’ve been a lot better. 
Mariana: I’m not so much “meh” on Mari because I think she’s sweet and likable! The problem is I don’t want to put her any higher because really? What did she do? She died horribly because Badger’s a piece of shit. 
Abel: Meh this guy’s garbage. I only put him up a little higher because the scene with him in the basement is really good. 
Brody: Brody is like the Mariana of S4 for me, just a bit better. I do like her. She had some development but her whole purpose was to die by Marlon’s hand and get the plot going. Would’ve loved to learn more about her, but I couldn’t give her anything higher than a C. 
Minerva: Controversial opinion but........ I don’t like Minerva as much as a lot of people do. If I could be brutally honest, if I were ranking these characters solely on how I feel about them without looking at their roles in the games and character development, Minerva would be in E tier at the highest. However, I can’t deny how tragic and complex her character and backstory is. It’s similar to how I feel about Lilly, but different. I think she’s just so fucked up from the delta that she’s become a husk of who she was and it results in her constantly pissing me off with all her shit. Also, the bridge scene alone bumps her up. That shit was crazy in a good yet tragic way. 
Omar: At one point, I forgot Omar existed until he got shot in the leg...... but he’s also God so y’know. I like him but I also had to make up my own little backstory for him so...
D
“Meh”
S1 Lilly: I don’t care about S1 Lilly in the slightest, she’s awful. They made her way more compelling in S4. And she killed my girlfriend which is bullshit on it’s own.
Jolene: If I could rewrite S1, I would’ve thrown out the Stranger and had Jolene be the kidnapper. As Danny said, “What a waste.”
Bonnie: She’s pretty disappointing, tbh. I didn’t like how the game help pushing her onto Clem and overall she’s pretty forgettable. 
Vince: He’s okay, I guess. He killed a dude one time. And shot a guy’s foot off.
Wyatt: “Meh” hahaha Eddie was a cooler character than he was
Jane: I wish Jane had been the Molly of S2 and stayed gone after she left the first time. I like that she taught Clementine some useful survival tactics and that’s what puts her on this tier, but I think we all know how I feel about the whole Jane vs. Kenny thing by now so... 
S2 Kenny: This Kenny actually moved up a tier because I fully took in everything he’s been through thus far and.... “Meh.” I don’t think he’s good for Clementine, I think she and AJ need a group like Wellington. I recognize that he’s a lot of people’s favorite, but like I said above in his S1 counterpart, I’m the 10% that doesn’t have that strong of an opinion on him. I’d much rather discuss other characters over him. 
Sarita: Forgettable, really. Except for when you get the chance to cut her hand off. That fucking scream of hers is anything but forgettable, yeesh. 
Walter: Again, mostly forgettable. His death was sad, and I do think he’s a good example of what happens when you’re too trusting in this world, but overall he doesn’t stand out to me. 
Kate: I probably would’ve liked Kate more if her romance wasn’t so damn forced. She has some funny lines, but she’s also pretty selfish and fickle when it comes to a lot of things. And I will forever be annoyed at her inability to keep her mouth shut about her and Javi’s relationship [or lack of] in front of David. 
E
“I don’t like you but you’re not the absolute worst, I guess...”
Danny St John and Brenda St John: I put these two together because they have the same issue: They’re fucking creepy. Where Andy was normal and deceiving, these two look like they want to cut my legs off and eat them. I think they’re much weaker in character than Andy was, even with Danny’s weird sexual fixation of his gun and Brenda talking about her husband. 
Vernon: He’s not the absolute worst because I do feel a little sympathy for him losing his daughter, but everything else just makes me not like him. 
Shel and Becca: Easily my two least favorite characters in 400 Days. I had no real interest in either of them. 
Arvo: This guy. I didn’t put him in as the absolute worst because of all the unnecessary shit Kenny put him through. No wonder he wanted to get the hell outta there. 
Clint: I literally couldn’t give a single shit about this dude or what happens to him. 
Eleanor: I don’t like Eleanor. I found her annoying. Her one good quality is her want to help people, but that want didn’t do much to help Tripp now did it, Eleanor.
F
“The absolute worst”
Larry: Did you expect anything else? Fuck this guy. 
Stranger: Worst final antagonist ever. You’re telling me I have to fight this Mister Roger’s tootsie pop? I’ll bet you $1 I can do it with one hand. Fuck this guy. 
Troy: Fuck Troy. All he does is smack Clementine around and then get shot in the dick. 
Joan: This lady is a laughably bad antagonist. The worst fucking “villian” jfc...
