uhh, reading an old fic I never finished, apparently I hc that sunil smells like warm carrot cake?? it sounds nice but when I describe smells with "warm", it means there's a fleshy undertone to it. so if you pick up sunil after he's been sleeping for 4 hours and sniff him, he'd smell like an off carrot cake. big pro of having a pet, my chihuahua smells like doritos🙏

I actually love smell hcs cuz it gives me an idea on how the characters一 or how I think the characters live which leads to more ideas and such. no surprise, sunil likes things and himself to be kept clean. not as clean as russell but yk, tolerable and nice. takes great care of himself, too. I wouldn't say russell has a notable smell like sunil, he's so clean that he doesn't even have a smell. he's got a faint smell that is just russell... russell smells like his DNA. his house has that unique smell that can't be described, ykwim? and it's not bad either, I guess I would call Russell's faint smell as new furniture. yeah.

since I'm here now, ig I'll just explain the rest of what I think the main 7 smell like.

My mind immediately went to Minka, I think she smells similar to Russell except she has a smell that's actually notable. She smells like if you baked a potato pie using sharpies. "Sugar, spice, and everything nice" ahh monkey. It's not warm either, it's fresh. Like sharpie potato pie with a side of fabreeze. I don't exactly know what this means for Minka. I'd say she's doing fine. Living. Painting.

Zoe... I think she just smells like blanket. A well taken care of blanket, and not one that's sitting in a shelf or cabinet with other blankets for like 3 years, no, like a blanket you washed 2 weeks ago. Obviously she also smells like prefumes and stuff. A Sephora store, even. That is only when she is pampered up, though.

Pepper makes her own scents for herself but it majorly depends on how she's feeling. When she's not, she does have her own smell, and it's not anatomic skunk fart smelly, it's weed and mint cream smelly. If pepper doesn't have a mint smell, that is NOT her, that is a fake, don't go near her. And yeah, I did mention weed but I really mean more like a hemp cream. I do love both smells of weed and mint though, nostalgic scents. But here's the "smelly" part... she also smells a little like an abandoned meat farm. She just has to not be upset for that weed mint smelly smell to happen naturally, or else she is fish bomb stinky.

Vinnie smells, erm... Not the best. Could use deodorant more often, especially before dancing. I'm sorry😭 He doesn't smell sweaty all the time though, ofc. I think he smells like... minions kid perfume and olive oil. That's the smell I think reflects vinnies living habits. Are reptiles even capable of producing their own smells? (yes) Whatever, the gecko has hair. HIS HAIR, actually his hair does smell pretty nice. Coconut oil, maybe? It's not like Vinnie doesn't care about his hygiene, he just needs to work on that more. Mother never taught rahh

I think Pennyling smells the best, actually. She tries hard to smell good. Who'd wanna hug a fuchi panda? :( She learns from Zoe and Pepper about layering and what scents fit her best. Her smell is heavily based on what she puts on, so you'd less likely catch her smelling anything less than nice. So I'd say that she often decides to smell like Christmas-feel milk chocolate. It's a warm, cozy smell. While her natural smell is like leafy citrus. Very earthy.

No, I don’t. But I did have 2 step kids for a time and I miss them dearly.

I used to use it a lot, but as my mental health has improved I’ve started using it less. I never really thought about it until just now though. Weird.

Today! It was a good cry though. My aunt told me about how I’m a whole different person now that I’m medicated and I was proud of myself and how far I’ve come in my mental health journey.

Hands and eyes. I’m a sucker for brown eyes.

I was never a sports person. I recently found out I like watching hockey though!

Here’s my take on Barraki Mantax, prior to his mutations (and technically up-to-date with his current circumstances in canon)!

For reference, Mantax’s mutated appearance;

I know I wrote earlier about how Mantax could easily be a member of Sidorak’s species, but at the time I was also working on some concepts for Mantax’s own unique species that I ultimately fell in love with! The idea is that they’re some kind of mix between feline and gecko, with the ratio varying between individuals- In Mantax’s case, I wanted to make him have more of the vibes of a jackal. I guess this makes Mantax a catboy.

I hope my inspirations from the original set are fairly obvious, as is the visual connection- The big manta fins become shoulder armor, the crotch and thighs, some detailing on the forehead, etc. I wanted Mantax to come across as a lithe and stealthy assassin, while still befitting the look of a regal conqueror who made Toa look comparatively lowly- And in turn, his mutation more jarringly fleshy, alien, and hideous.

Ultimately, I recognized I was free to take plenty of artistic liberties here as well- A lot of characters really change between their regular and mutated versions, having used the Toa Hordika and Karzahni as a frame of reference, although between the Toa Hagah and the Rahaga, the sky really is the limit to how different a mutation can look.

Likewise, I didn’t want Mantax’s face to look too similar to his mutated one, otherwise I feel the weight of his mutations and how the Barraki feel about their own lessens- Especially when you remember how it was easy for the Matoran to mistake them for Rahi, and the Barraki’s insistence that without transforming back, they could never reach that originally glory and charisma befitting the emperors they once were.

On another note, I had fun with the idea that Mantax’s tail was always a thing and reinterpreted it as feline, like a sleek jet-black panther that stealthily stalks his prey. Mantax is characterized as an ambusher, so I wanted that ninja-esque look to him, and the eyebrow ridges were a happy surprise that I rolled with alongside his sunken eyes, to evoke that perpetual grimness of Mantax’s. His legs I made digitigrade like a reptile or feline, with the claw sticking out the back taking inspiration from the set’s foot pieces, while the paws form a curved and bulky shape- Also like the set!

Overall I’m pretty happy with this drawing, it was a cathartic return to drawing, and I hope I was able to convey that sleek and armored look, while layering it over a lithe yet buff physique, with mechanical bits in the gaps and joints to compliment the more organic shapes of Mantax- It’s fun balancing organic with mechanical to evoke the concept of ‘biomechanical’ to those without context, and I took some inspiration from the style of the movies as well! This was a really fun creative exercise, especially since Mantax was my first and one of only two Barraki, so it was very nostalgic at the same time!

For now, I guess this is my personal headcanon for what pre-mutated Mantax looks like, and it’s ‘canon’ within YaBr. Fun fact, I’ve also interpreted Lariska to be the same species as Mantax, albeit with just a bit more gecko in her feline/gecko ratio. Ultimately I also wanted each Barraki’s species to be able to be stand out in their own way, and inspire its own list of characters- Seeing as how they’re all members of Mata Nui’s six ‘prime species’, despite us never really seeing nor hearing about anyone else aside from Ehlek’s people.

Prologue - Cordelia

May brings with it the memory of battles fought and won and the ever looming presence of a war not quite lost but certainly nowhere near done. As I hand out threadbare blankets around the flickering fires of the temporary war camp, I have to force my mind not to stray to all the people who should be here but are not. Well, the one person, really. I don’t allow myself to dwell, for I know that if I let my heart open to loss, there will be no hope at closing the hole left behind. No one here will tolerate that.

Yet no one criticizes Halen when she fumbles and breaks her fragile composure, storming out of the planning tent, the memories glistening in her eyes threatening to spill over. No, when it’s her, they rush to comfort her, to appease her, and they tell her to take all the time she needs. After all, has the poor girl not been through enough? they whisper pityingly as though we all haven’t lost others to this fight. But, of course, it’s not my place to comment on the actions of the mighty Chosen One. Even if she is my friend.

I look down to find my hands are empty. Tir has taken the last blanket from me without my noticing, and he’s settling down against his pack with his bare feet at the fire. I scowl; he isn’t allowed to speak against Halen either, despite being her older brother.

Heaving a sign, I slump down next to my friend and pull a corner of the blanket over myself. Tir shifts slightly so I can lean against his shoulder. We don’t speak. There are no words big enough to dispel the cloud of grief that hangs over us.

I know Tir is thinking of Zo today, just like he knows I’m thinking of Cherry.

Both of us, I’m sure, are also thinking that Halen ought to be here. She ought to be spilling those tears she always threatens and apologizing meaninglessly for deaths that aren’t her fault. Since when did she choose to be distant and calm? Couldn’t she at least have the decency to break down with the rest of us?

I scowl at a gecko as it skitters through the dirt toward the treeline to the west. I should say something to Halen. I should scream at her, sob at her, cry out until she understands that we need her as a friend, not just a commander.

My mind made up, I stand quickly, earning a confused stare from Tir. “Where are you off to?” he asks, his voice thick.

I shake my head. “Somewhere that isn’t here.”

He chuckles and reaches up to squeeze my hand. It’s enough. He was never one for many words.

I smile sadly down at him and set off to the eastern shore, where the purple and gold tents of the Eneris royal tents have been set up. Their fire and sun emblem shines bright on the tent flaps behind guards dressed in layers upon layers of robes and wraps and blankets. I scoff. The army settled just twenty yards away is shivering under thin blankets and dying fires while the royals and their company dine on mutton and venison. Not that I’ve come to expect anything else from them. They recruited Halen and built this army from the ground up—of course they believe themselves worthy of a few more precious coins exchanged for better conditions.

Even today, the first anniversary of Monvira’s troops storming villages and uprooting lives, they haven’t so much as acknowledged the flood of pain that’s sweeping through their army. I wonder if they even know what May first means to their people.

I stop mid-stride, staring straight ahead at the Strategy tent, where I know Halen spends most of her time these days.

It hits me: May first. The sky is clouded and the birds are silent, but it’s May first and no one bothered telling me that I forgot my birthday. Which was April thirtieth. No one noticed.

Weariness pushes at the back of my eyes, and I blink heavily against the tears blurring my vision. Memories from last year flood my mind as I turn and hurry towards Halen’s private tent. It bares the same colors and seal as the others.

I collapse on her bedroll and let out a single sob.

Last year, on the night of my birthday, Cherry had wrapped a blanket around us both as we stumbled back to our village after a whole day spent together at Renton Lake. She’d kissed my hand and twirled me toward the hut I shared with Halen, giggling in the moonlight, her dark unbound hair spilling over her shoulder like a waterfall of night. The memory rips through me, forcing another sob out of my quaking body.

The next morning, she’d been gone.

I’m not sure how long I lay there, my tears collecting in a pool around my head, but eventually the shaking subsides and leaves behind a solemn heaviness. Only when I hear the tent flap ruffle do I stir. There’s a small gasp, then: “Delia?”

Halen’s nickname for me only makes the smallest dent in my sorrow. I push myself to a sitting position, sure that my face is red and splotchy and my hair wild and tangled. All in all, I don’t blame her for looking taken aback. “Delia, what is it?” she gushes, crouching before me and taking my face in her hands. “What’s wrong? What can I do?”

This is exactly what I wanted when I stormed in here. Now, I nearly laugh. It’s pathetic, really, all this time I’ve spent cleaning up after Halen, chasing her, thinking maybe she could do something that would fill the cavity growing inside me. I see it now, as her hazel eyes rake my face. “Nothing,” I tell her. Her thumbs are soft as they wipe away the tears that trickle down my cheeks. “Not anymore.” My voice is scratchy, and I push down against a wave of shame. I’m better than this. I’m better than breaking down in my friend’s plush tent. I’ve never been the emotional one—that was always Halen.

I wipe away my tears, feel myself stand and walk out of the tent, my mind still occupied with hazy revelations I’m too exhausted to fully pursue. There’s a feeling in my gut, the only one that matters right now, and it’s an overwhelming cry to get out.

The grass is silent under my feet as I walk, and I’m distantly aware of Halen calling after me. Her cries of “Wait!” and “What’s going on, Cordelia?” follow me, even after she stops.

I keep walking.

I don’t look back.

All right, I suppose. Come to pillowfort and my musings will be supplied to you :P Today I rescued a tiny gecko caught in a spider’s web, and admired some cumulus congestus clouds sailing beneath a layer of altostratus. It’s been very gloomy here but we didn’t get much rain.

Yesterday I fell in love with these wonderful teacups that I got for $6 each.

I love some of the contradictions or bugs in the final scroll- and I’m going to assume that all three of my best buds were too dense to get on the dang boat without me. So that means they were either going to run head first into bullets in the final fight, or die in the explosion. Unless I went and dismissed them inside the facility and grabbed them in the time limit they were doomed and I’m not doing all of this a third time just for that -.-

Don’t like how it says I went and killed the death claws- I most certainly did not.

Anyway. Fallout 2. I definitely have complaints but I’m not so sure that’s what I want to emphasize as I close this out and yet I fear I will end up doing just that.

This WAS fun. It genuinely was. A lot of the changes and quality of life upgrades from Fallout 1 are wonderful.

But.

This just wasn’t as much fun, man. Front to back top to bottom start to finish it just wasn’t.

It was fun, I’d call it a good game, and I’m CERTAIN every single hardcore oldschool fallout fan is ready to toss me under the bus for such words but yeah. Didn’t do it for me nearly as much as Fallout 1 did or as spiritual successor (of a spiritual predecessor, lol) Wasteland 2 did for me.

It just felt. I don’t know. Bland in a lot of areas story wise, boring elsewhere, and combat was annoying for some rather dumb reasons.

Story: So many areas are just trying to be interesting but don’t really have much for you to do that feels nice to do, whether it’s lack of impact or just the conflict itself lacking hooks.

I couldn’t begin to care about getting a mining chip to get a SICK 1000 dollars in a game that throws so much money at you that I ended with like 50k after giving up on money hours and hours and hours prior.

I couldn’t begin to care about a quest that’s just 3 different shades of the exact same “mostly evil” gray.

I could care about some of the cartoonishly evil or goody two shoes things, I’m a sucker for some of those. And some of the quests did have some interesting layers like the Mutant haters in Broken Hills being framed and that being a sub-plot you could unravel for some extra xp. But then that quest had a weird bit of you not being able to just tell Marcus and felt a little arbitrary in what you could and could not do (and this isn’t a complaint about a quest in an old game not having 3000 endings, it’s a complaint about the quest being framed as if it would have those multiple options but then it just kinda doesn’t).

Companions got a lot more going for them and don’t block you anymore, but they don’t have enough going for them that they aren’t liabilities more often than not. I lost so many hours to just baby sitting them and I regret every second of it, I made mistakes doing that. I should have sacrificed the bag space and gone solo which would have made more sense anyway because bag space exists for profit and profit is something you will NEVER struggle with in this game.

At least the way I played. All this comes with the caveat of the settings I chose- due to how Fallout 1 hit me I went on easy this run so maybe my money was due to that. Hard to say.

Oh and my combat complaint is mostly weapon based. It’s kind of a carryover from 1 where there are too many skills for not enough weapons, but here it’s a bit different. FO2 has a decent chunk of weapons, but a lot of them are basically the same stats with a minor difference between them- AND THEY ARE SPREAD OUT LIKE CRAZY.

As a character that picked one weapon type (Small Guns) I spent like 15 hours with one gun, then 15 with my second, then the rest of the game with the 223 until the last dungeon had me using the gauss weapons.

There ARE a lot of small guns, but you never see them (likely because they are level-drops ?) and it made gameplay extremely bland. I just don’t remember this problem in FO1, things seemed to continue growing steadily until you were done and that was that.

I know I have more under my hat to talk about somewhere in there, but this was an all nighter project to finish this title so it’s all mush right now.

To close I’ll just say the most obvious take aways from Fallout 2.

Gecko is the greatest city in the world and I would die for Harold (as any FO fan would), and FUCK Vault City and it’s isolationist slavery loving shitbirds straight to hell.

Rilla will never stop being fascinated by Arum.

He sleeps beside her, between she and Damien, and even that is a thousand page treatise on the concept of trust that she wants to memorize front to back. When he sleeps alone he curls into a ball, tail wrapped around himself like a cat, but in the bed they share he is more apt to sprawl, hand and hand and hand and hand reaching out until they can find a soft source of warmth, until he can pull his lovers close against him and curl around them instead.

It’s easier to really learn him, in sleep. He tends to get irritable with her if she stares at him too long in the daylight. Which is fair, Rilla reasons. Analyzing the bone structure of your monster is a process that requires more direct observation than anyone would reasonably call polite… but Rilla can’t help herself.

Arum’s body is like a puzzle in some ways. Like four or five puzzles piled up together, actually. She’s been taking notes about the subject in longhand, in code, because she doesn’t think he’d appreciate her trying to categorize him so thoroughly- but it isn’t even about the science, anymore. The inhumanity of him, the irrationality; it draws her in. Curiosity has always been Rilla’s weakness, and Lord Arum is a curious creature indeed.

She wants to know him. Every part of him.

She can’t decide, yet, how to organize her observations; mostly she tries to take him part by part, layer by riveting layer.

She has pages dedicated to his eyes. The first thing she learned about him, really, was that he could see better in the dark than a human, and his eyes only got more interesting from there. Diamond-shaped pupils blow out wide in the dark or with arousal, or narrow into thin, dangerous slits when he’s focused. Irises, bright violet. Bright like actual violets, saturated and bold with narrow flecks of a darker shade arranged around the pupil in a subtle starburst. She and Damien must be the only creatures alive who have gotten close enough to see those flecks of plum among the violet, the only people he would trust enough to let that close. He lets them close enough to see, and then he allows his eyes to close regardless, a set of nictitating membranes sliding horizontally over the purple before his proper eyelids close as well.

Another fascinating layer, those membranes. They’re translucent but fogged gray, waterproof, protective; she’s noticed them slipping closed without the outer lids when he’s startled, or when he happens to go out in the rain [a note on his clothing in the rain: it is waterproof as well, though whether that is through magic or the skill of monsters’ weave is impossible to determine, and when she asks for clarification Arum dismisses the question in so particular a way that she is unsure which possibility is more likely]. It’s a useful trait, one that Rilla appreciates because it’s another layer of protection for those unique, beautiful eyes.

She can’t take more notes on his eyes in sleep, though. Instead, she ghosts her hands over his scales, over the subtle patterned expanse of his back as he snores gently into Damien’s hair.

The long, elegant curve of his spine is crested with a subtle ridge of raised scales, like spines or horns, nearly an inch long at the base of his skull and down between his shoulders, and barely higher than the bumps of the rest of his scales lower down [the first time Rilla runs her fingertips along the ridge Arum snaps his teeth in the air, hissing through them in surprise and delight, and Rilla smiles, then repeats the gesture]. Aside from some mild sensitivity, they seem primarily cosmetic, and Rilla can’t place what specific creature the trait is stolen from.

The entire expanse of his scales gleams magnificently, even in the low light of the nighttime Keep. He’s mottled in vibrant dark green and in black, with speckles of gold dotting down his front. The scales themselves are small and near as thick as light armor on his back, on the outsides of his arms, along the top of his tail, and in bigger, softer, smoother plates down his neck, his stomach, underneath his arms, between his legs. He is textured, cool, everywhere she can lay her hands [she has made a point to lay her hands nearly everywhere, by now].

The second pair of arms is completely unnatural relative to any nonmagical reptilian, and they should be completely incongruous with the rest of his frame, but his body fits together with infuriating ease. Arum’s torso is slightly longer than it would otherwise be to make room for the second set of pectorals that the extra arms necessitate [when he stretches in the morning his musculature ripples beneath his scales like the billow of steam, and Rilla could easily spend the rest of her life cataloging every configuration of angles at which his arms could be arranged atop the pillows of their shared bed], and his musculature there is lean but shockingly strong.

The pads of his fingers are textured with hair-thin ridges that help him stick to walls and ceilings when he scurries along at his shocking speed, similar to those of a gecko [Her list of creatures that Arum has traits in common with is absurdly long, and longer when she includes her speculations on his internal anatomy], and the same is true of his toes. His claws on all four limbs are dangerously sharp [more recently, he files down the claws on his lower pair of hands enough to dull them, complaining bitterly about the fragility of humans in general, but the first time he can reach out for the two of them, touch them without fear of causing harm, his expression falls to something raw and earnest and tender] [the claws on his upper hands remain sharp, and there is a certain thrill that comes with their careful touch as well].

His legs are powerful, long, a zig-zag of artful curves. He walks on his toes when he’s upright, his heels in the air and adding to his already impressive height, but he can turn his ankles oddly when he drops to all six limbs, slithering viper-quick whether he is crossing the floor or climbing a tree or wall or ceiling.

Arum’s tail is primarily meant for balance, and it’s not quite so deft as to be entirely prehensile, but he has enough control that he can grip a small object with it or curl it around something solid to stabilize himself [he is equally likely to curl it around either of his humans to pull them closer unexpectedly, to add an extra layer to an embrace].

Arum’s teeth are [she mentally places a line between her more clinical observations and those that belong in the previous category] gorgeous, knife-sharp, terrifying, with long vicious incisors and jagged molars. Insectivore teeth, meant for piercing and crushing exoskeletons, and they flash bright behind his thin lips when when he snarls or speaks or laughs.

There is a crescent of little divots above those lips, the labial pits he uses to sense heat; a snake trait among the more dominant lizard features. In the scatter of her notes she has them sorted into the category of particularly anomalous with his extra arms and his frill.

His frill: infuriatingly out of place [speaking only for the purposes of classification: in the social sense, Rilla is only ever grateful for the fragile, expressive webbing that flares around Arum’s head in surprise and embarrassment and indignation, because it’s one of the easiest ways to tell what he’s feeling, besides his tone of voice]. It bears only passing similarity to the same feature on nonmagical frilled lizards; it drapes along the sides of his head when at rest instead of folding at his neck, it’s smaller relative to the size of his head, and the folds revealed when it flares are colored in bright patches of bluish-green and gold-

“Amaryllis.”

For half a moment she thinks that he’s murmuring in his sleep, which would be an interesting first, but then one of his eyes slits open and fixes her with a violet glare.

“I could feel you staring even in the depths of sleep, Amaryllis,” he mutters, voice thick and growling. “What, precisely, is causing you to think so furiously at this time of night?”

His irises are wide black diamonds in the mellow dark, his long tongue flicks absently to scent the air, his chest rumbles with each breath he takes, and every piecemeal part of him fits together in an impossible harmony, every edge that by rights should be jagged instead slides smooth. Rilla knows she’ll never unravel the entire tapestry of Arum, and that knowledge fills her with the thrill of challenge, with breathless awe, with overflowing love.

“You,” she says after a pause, hoping the enormity of her feelings doesn’t bleed too much into her voice. When he goes startle-still, she leans down to press a kiss to his cheek, where she knows he can feel the tickle of her warm-blooded heat. She doesn’t pull away then, sighing against the texture of his scales and pressing her hand to feel the slow drum of his heart in his chest. “Just thinking how damn stunning you looked all wrapped up with Damien.”

Rilla isn’t Damien, and she can’t make the tangle of science and wonder and connection in her mind sing as prose, or verse. Her coded pages read exactly like her field notes: pointed, unadorned, though admittedly a bit more biased. Arum knows her, though. He knows the deeper context around her flippancy, the way she uses informality as a source of comfort.

He breathes a laugh and it tickles Rilla’s ear, and he nuzzles his face against her own. “I would love to pay your flattery back in kind, Amaryllis, but if we wake the little knight now he’ll be utterly useless in the morning,” he grumbles, letting his eyes slip closed again as he pulls her closer.

“Sweet of you to worry about tiring him out,” she replies in a teasing whisper. He growls at the implication that his worry is unselfish, and Rilla’s mind flies off again. The entirety of Arum’s vocal system is a wild mystery, how he can duplicate human language with such an incompatible tongue and lips, and that isn’t even getting into the mystery of how he makes those rattling noises, those growls, those purrs. As far as Rilla is aware, purring is not a typical trait in a lizard, so she can’t even begin to speculate what animal instrument is hiding in the hollow of his throat.

“You are thinking again,” he hisses through a sigh, smiling with his eyes closed and letting his claws drift gently up and down her bicep. “I can hear your mind churning when you go still like that.”

“Sorry,” she says wryly, pressing another kiss to his neck.

“No apologies, my Amaryllis, but you need your rest as well as he does.”

Arum tends to save his pet names for Damien (Rilla suspects this is because they have a much more profound effect on the knight than they would on herself), but it does send a giddy little thrill through her when he slips enough to call her his. “I know, I know,” she says. “I’ll get to hibernating or whatever.”

He chuckles low again, his fingers tracing soft soothing circles on her arm, on her back, his breath lifting his chest beneath her palm, and the combined rhythms are nearly hypnotic. “Would it-” he pauses, and she can feel the hesitation drift through him and then dissolve like parchment in water. It’s easier for him to let himself be soft like this, in warmth, tangled up together in the dark. He hums above her and asks, “Would it help if I sang for you?”

Rilla will never stop being fascinated by Arum, and she’ll never stop being surprised by him either.

She nods against his shoulder, because she thinks her voice will either crack with laughter or too much feeling if she tries to talk, and Arum presses his mouth in an almost-kiss against her hair before he starts to sing. He sings close and quiet against her skin, his voice rough and low and inhuman, and Rilla smiles against his scales as it works in concert with the movement of his hands. It's soothing, stable, perfect.

There is comfort in a curiosity that cannot be answered, Rilla thinks as she drifts. Stability in a mystery that can unfold and unfold and never reveal a conclusion. Rilla has always preferred answers to questions, but Arum-

Arum is a question she intends to ponder for the rest of her life.

Day 24 and 25

Day 24, 25 and 26: Trikala>Lamia>Thiva

The sun came out! Three days ago, I gifted my overshoes to Kastoria. Two days, Trikala’s Airbnb owner now has a beautiful pair of threadbare, elasticity long gone Castelli leg warmers, and has no idea of the significance of this gift. This is a cyclist’s version of a striptease...which can also and was performed on the move in the last few days: the jacket, the arm warmers and then a few miles later, the leg warmers.

It was the first morning I left without having consider any layering choices. I felt an awful lot lighter after being charged €8 for two cappuccinos, and I found a bike shop who pumped up my tyres and sent me on my way with a new inner tube after my puncture set bounced off somewhere in the previous day’s ride. Maybe Hades horrors got THAT close. Enjoy, you savages!

Greece has really surprised me, in a multitude of ways. Firstly, it’s people. I know a few Greeks. In fact, Dmitri who is married to Katherine and currently looking after my house and dog, Nyla (how dogs should be) is from Corinthe. He and the other Greek seem lovely. However, here, if I’m totally honest, on the whole, appear to have a serious attitude problem or a chip on their shoulder. You’ll get what you need from them, but blimey, they won’t make it easy! And on the whole, everything they do for you seems to be a massive chore; they tend to look decidedly pissed off! Yet, despite this, I quite like them. It’s like they don’t really give a hoot what anyone else thinks about them. You’ll do things their way or you’ll go without. Is it because of the long and deep Greek tragedies and history that floods its many mountains and plains? I thought that Italians were expressive, which they are. But Greeks don’t want to be expressive but if you push them, you’ll probably see the wrong kind of expressive!

Take for example, the owner of the hotel I’m in right now. The pool is not in use, it’s in the middle of nowhere and whilst it’s clean, so is a travelodge or Premier Inn, but none typically have atmosphere and are extremely functional. Bed, check in, restaurant and bar if you’re lucky. As I rested for the first time by the lovely looking pool on this trip, the owner came over to speak to me declaring his position as if I should congratulate him. And then proceeded to try and get me to cancel my booking.com booking, drive up to the cash point with him in order to pay cash and get a €10 discount for the most expensive and overpriced hotel for the whole 25 days to date. After telling him I’d think it over for while, and the hassle of getting in a car to go to get cash, and concerned that cancelling the booking after the cancellation period had passed with the possibility of double payment and no recourse, I told him it’s not worth it. I’d also be charged a currency fee for the withdrawal (I haven’t mentioned it, but a few days ago, in supposed trusted company, I was set up and pickpocketed. That in itself was genius how it was staged. Luckily they only got away with coins from 8 different countries and my international card. But that has made the cash process a little tricky). Mr owner, who clearly thought very highly of his negotiation skills, stating Booking.com make billions, and me being a seasoned traveller must play the system all the time. Am I missing a trick here? Maybe, but after much insistence after his persistence, he got the message. But this is my experience of Greeks.

Moving to the cycling. I’d been warned by said Greeks that Greek drivers were about the worst you could find. Be careful, I was warned. The roads are very busy and Greeks don’t deal with cyclists at all well. This really set me up to see Greece as a country I needed to get through to get to Athens and the end of my cross-continent adventure. The truth is I have been totally amazed. It has been, day after day, the best cycling I’ve done anywhere in Europe, including Spain and France. Not only are the drivers considerate, stop and wait at intersections for the cyclist to pass, they indicate, pull out, wait, and many toot and wave encouragement. The roads are empty, generally in great condition and all around, the scenery continuously draws you in. The culture is rich, untouched. I saw my first living snake on one road, the same road I saw many geckos between Kastoria and Trikala. The sides of the roads are dressed with millions of poppies, Aloe Vera, cacti, hemp, olive trees. I’m yet to reach Athens but I haven’t once felt unsafe due to traffic. Wild dogs, yes. I’d rather not repeat those.

Both Lamia and Kastoria were gems on an unplanned route. I don’t feel like seeing Thiva as I’m full of hay fever and possibly a cold, so am uninspired. It does have an interesting past though and was an important as a city and in Greek mythology. But I’m very happy here in my apartment away from everywhere: the calm before the storm, returning to relative reality tomorrow.

I don’t know why this area for cyclists seems to be so undiscovered, but I’m so glad I made the decision to come inland. The coast will undoubtedly be much busier than this incredible, mountainous and flat landscape from Albania to Athens. I couldn’t be happier on my bike than I’ve been for the past four days.😊. The balance of vistas for this trip have been perfect: mainland, coast and now mountains. That pretty much covers it! I later hear from Mr Owner as he reluctantly demanded my card payment as he saw me sat on my balcony because he wasn’t there in the morning, that 30 Hungarian cyclists were arriving the next day. For them it’s a short flight away. They’re obviously in on this secret nirvana that is Greece.

The days have rolled by and here I am, one ride away from Athens. I’m still focused, but also excited. 71km till I pack up my bike, having dipped my feet and maybe even swum in the Aegean in the last few miles of my Odyssey...surely that is classed as a transcontinental bike ride? 😃.

Packing away my winter gear, my shorts and t-shirt for the last time, throwing away all the bits and pieces I no longer need, and counting the hours...one more sleep and Athens...

The day has arrived, and still, with only 71km to go, I’m not 100% certain I’ll make it to Athens! I guess I will believe it and relax once I walk into the hotel, and ask for my bike box. Having received an overweight charge relating to my box apparently weighing 67kg heavier than the maximum for my shipping cost (which is 27kg and having weighed it before booking, know it’s actually 19kg), I am expecting to find an adult size stowaway inside. So the very first thing I will be doing on receipt is asking a member of staff to hold my phone and video me opening it as evidence to send to UPS, who will otherwise pursue an additional £146 shipping cost. I tell you this as I don’t want you to fall into the same cunning trap.

A fellow cyclist, Steve, currently pedalling through France, shared this lovely insight with me after I’d shared the view of the Aegean Sea af Lamia’s castle. Around 10k from me, I could have by rights, pedalled over, dipped my toe in the water and got aboard the nearest train to Athens. But didn’t! Steve shared this: In Xenophon’s Anabasis when the 10,000 Greek soldiers saw the Mediterranean after there march out of Persia they shouted for joy Thálatta! Thálatta! The sea The Sea! They knew they were home.

I haven’t got that excited yet, but I’ve placed my Sainsbury’s order...Istanbul tomorrow...by plane 😊

The bells have chimed outside, I’ve eaten two cereal bars, a banana and half a pint of milk for breakfast and I will be hauling my knackered, ageing body on to the bike just one more time here, for up to 3 hours...and then it’s done...hopefully! See you in Athens 😃

Sorry for the delay on this. Its pretty simple and rather overgrown and messy right now but here you are!  Eventually I’d like to have the colony in Drea’s exo terra when she gets her upgrade. 

It has a drainage layer and is bioactive with some leaf litter (though CUC is just springtails and dwarf white isos at the moment).  

you can actually see some eggs in the corner of the tank… they were laid under the glass lip of the tank.  Normally they lay their eggs in one of the many bamboo tubes they have, which I rotate in to the nursery tank (which is their old tank theres some pics of it on my blog somewhere i think). 

They are basically cryptids.  I hear them way more than I see them but they do come out to bask under the UV light ( Arcadia 2% compact bulb on the outside of the screen top) or to lick water drops off things after they get their spray down.   

Theres also have an 8watt Jungle dawn for plant growth and a heat mat on the back of the tank which is attached to a matt stat. 

They are pretty entertaining !

Most beautiful scene (scenery/shot wise): Kate swimming and floating in the pool (before the water turns red lol) Unanswered question/continuity issue/plot error that bugs you: Like... there’s no way anyone could come out cold turkey that friggin’ quick within a couple hours. It usually would last within three days. Best promo: Season 3, I think. At what point did you fall in love with this show/book: I think it was the scene when Kate had the conversation with Richie by the pool. I loved how the creators made the interaction less creepy compared to the movie, and I found it pleasing with all these changes they made from the movie for the show. There were a lot of things they changed that I found it appealing, AND THEY CHANGED SETH’S ANSWER AND WANTED KATE TO ACCOMPANY HIM, LIKE THAT’S WHAT I WANTED TO HAPPEN FOR 20 YEARS, AND IT HAPPENED! 😩🙌🏽 It’s like they gave me everything I wanted, but wasn’t expecting to happen lmao.
