as a huge unreliable narrator enjoyer i love the fact that the raven tower is narrated by someone who cannot lie. so the narration is not unreliable, and any kind of uncertainty is always couched in "here is a story i have heard" or "i imagine", but it scratches the same itch as unreliable narration because the evidentiality of the narration is still so central, just in the opposite way. stories that don't care about where the narrator is getting their information or what biases are present in the way that information is shared with us are on one end of a spectrum, and stories that do care about those things are on the other end, and the raven tower is firmly situated alongside the unreliably narrated stories even though the whole point is that the narrator is as motivated as it is possible to be to never say something that is untrue. and it's fascinating to see how ann leckie manages to build suspense and subvert expectations without really at any point deliberately misleading the reader. every time i reread one of her books, the bouncing of the dvd screensaver in my brain gets a little more frenetic. how does she do what she does. ann leckie what is your secret.

dark justiciar shadowheart is genuinely so interesting to me as like... a facet to her character. like it really hammers home how desperate she is for shar's love and affection (+ the validation and love from other worshipers of shar). like in a lot of ways I get that it seems shocking to others / some fans because it really does contradict some of the morals we see her express BUT imo that just speaks to the level of desperation she feels. her comments on how shar "must" love her for her to survive the shadowcursed lands, or the bit where she talks about shar nurturing her and loving her and sounds... almost more like shes trying to convince herself more than shes trying to convince you. theres a bit about other sharrans not thinking she had earned her name, and of course the mother superior not thinking she was ready / worthy of being a dark justiciar. like shes just so completely desperate to feel unconditionally and securely loved, and to earn the approval of others that shes entirely willing to injure herself in the process (as well as.... the people who actually love her, of course).

not to mention that mechanically, afaik, she can only end up there if shes encouraged to by the player. ie... she needs to know someone else approves.

i really like the dichotomy of everyone respecting Nana as their friend off stage (and the darker feeling she has that they All take from her in one way or another except Karen) but inside the stage duels as performers with her as their ultimate test, they're all still prideful enough to treat it as every man's glory for themselves, making it so they can't hold a grudge against Nana outside the Revues because to everyone the Revues are Just Business and a space for words that don't belong outside it- which plays into the repression that's hurting all their relationships, they really thought of everything making this series

How are you adjusting to the whole Norse mythology situation?

LEO: I’ve mostly been bugging some of the older einherjar, and Hunding, a little bit, to figure this place out. Do you know how cool it is that some people have been here since the industrial revolution?? There's no way that I'm the first of my dad's kids to make it here. I just don't know who to talk to about it.

King is a gang leader whose wife died when his kids were young. He adopted Artificer after she died, and for the most part had an okay-ish relationship with his kids when they were young. Once Mantis was old enough to babysit, he started working more and seeing his kids less. This created a strain between him, June, and Arti. He is only in contact with Mantis.

Mantis is the oldest of the siblings, and is the only sibling who remembers their mother. As the firstborn in the family, he will also inherit the majority of his father's wealth and status. He was a bully to his siblings growing up, especially Artificer, as he saw her as a threat to his status. While he idolizes his dad, their relationship is nowhere near healthy, and sometimes wonders how his life would have turned out if his mother was still alive. However, he doesn't dwell on it, and for the most part accepts his life as is.

Juniper is the middle child of the family, and it's very apparent in how her father treats her (or, in this case, doesn't). Being younger than her brother, and not naturally gifted like Artificer, she was brushed aside as unimportant, just someone to make the family larger. She moved out as soon as she turned 18, and cut contact with her father when she did. She got her masters in teaching, and is now looking for a job as an elementary school teacher. She still cares for her siblings, trying to keep in contact with them. However, it's hard to reach Mantis without seeing her father, and Artificer doesn't like to be reminded of her past. June sometimes wishes she had more friends, but is overall content with where she is in life.
