She flushes. “Clearly not.”

“Innocent creatures deserve to be protected from impending stampedes.”

She half-snorts. “Especially not you.”

Those words had been the start of a night to remember. Specifically because of the way Riza was handily beating Roy in a simple betting card game.

“You’re simply awful at cards, sir”

“I am not,” Roy said, eyebrows furrowed as he analyzed his fan of cards, “you just happen to be incredible at cards, Lieutenant.”

It was late, the only light in the room was the standing lamp they had moved from the corner to provide vision for their game. The new moon outside hadn’t helped their lighting situation either, but Hawkeye appreciated the stars that dazzled the night sky in the moon's absence. 

Riza had bet well, playing intentionally and taking all of Mustang’s cards. Roy bet wildly. He often relied on luck when it came to games, and according to the other members of their team that luck was normally in his favor; Havoc was one to complain about lost wages after a night of drinking and poker. But Riza knew Mustang, and she also knew that sometimes his ego needed to be checked. Unfortunately for him, that responsibility usually fell in her capable hands. It was her responsibility to pull that luck out from under him, force him to face reality every once in a while.

“It's not very fair,” the Colonel finished his last thought absentmindedly. He finally laid down a card and Riza sighed, gathering the cards into her growing pile. Roy let out a frustrated growl.

“Just know, I surrendered that card willingly,” his finger pointed an irritated finger at the now hidden card, and then at the center of her face.

She smiled, amused, “Do you plan to get it back later?”

“Of course.”

“And how do you plan to do that?” one of her eyebrows was raised in a questioning gesture. His eyebrows grew closer, irritated at her teasing remarks, and Riza let out a little bubble of laughter.

How did they even get here? Sitting among scattered cards on the rough worn floor of an inn in Eastern Amestris, teasing each other like they were teenagers again.

okay so it would have to be an AU, but I LOVE this idea, because my mind immediately goes to a college AU:

-Roy and Riza are rivals of some kind. Perhaps they're both RA's at the same dorm? Warring Greek houses? TAs of the same class?

-and obviously they hate each other at first sight--Roy ACTS and SEEMS like a womanizer, which immediately pisses Riza off. And Riza acts like a fucking goodie-two-shoes according to Roy, which automatically makes her insufferable.

-but then someone (Maes, I'm positive it's Maes) has a party and they both get drunk and lo and behold they hook up

-naturally they both tell themselves "it was a mistake i'm never going to talk to them again". and of course that monday they get thrown into a group project of some kind together, and it's lasting the whole damn semester

-and their proximity forces them to start talking to each other.

-and oh no they become Level 4 friends and lock each other's tragic backstories

-the whole time they're still...you know...banging at regular intervals...because at some point they kind of decided to become fuck buddies and here we are.

-and they fall for each other at the same time but don't say anything because they think the other person still hates them deep down

-so they're peacocking around insulting each other and having ABSOLUTELY BANGER SEX

-anyway they eventually figure it out and live happily ever after

I hope that was an adequate answer! It would be very fun to write someday--we'll see if I ever have the time. Thank you for the ask!

2021 Year In Review

delicate by @lantur (FMA, a Riza Hawkeye character study spanning from pre-canon childhood to well post-canon. Plenty of Royai, naturally. Words cannot give justice to how good this fic is and how much I love it!)

snipers solve 99% of all problems by silentwalrus (okay so like. I’m not usually a crossover person but holyyyy frick frack this FMA/Harry Potter one is fun. Still ongoing and basically 80 chapters of Edward Elric bitching about wizards and saying fuck 3,000 times. I hadn’t laughed this hard since I read The Martian.)

Son of Thorns by @truthwatcher-vez (The Stormlight Archive; I’m admittedly wayyy behind on this one, but it’s a post-RoW fic centered on Renarin Kholin. He definitely deserves some time to shine after we were robbed of content for him in RoW 😤 The author’s Rlainarin series, Chasms Between, is also excellent!)

Controlled Burn by madelinescribbles @okiedoketm (FMA role reversal where Al & Ed are climbing the ranks of the military and Roy commits human transmutation, blinding himself and getting Riza stuck in a taxidermy hawk. Ongoing fic, the characterization is soooo on point despite the role reversal, and the plot is so intriguing!)

Five good/positive things that happened to you in 2021

Seeing friends again!! I got to go visit a good college friend I hadn't seen in years since we graduated, and another friend I'd only seen once since we graduated came to visit twice! (Why do all my friends live across the country?)

I wrote. So much. Fanfiction 🤣 Hit a major slump this fall when rising COVID cases in my area started to make work hellish again, but I'm starting to get back into it!

Started therapy for the first time back in May. Also recently started a new antidepressant, after a bad adverse reaction scared me off from them for a while. Still have a long ways to go, but I'm feeling much better, and I haven't had an anxiety attack at work since.

Realized I'm asexual! Which explains soooo much about my life 🤣 Still coming to terms with it in some respects, but simply knowing brings so much peace and pride in my identity.

I got a Tumblr in 2020 but this was the year I really started becoming active in a few fandoms and really connecting with people on here! It's been a blast, and I love freaking out about shared interests with you all💕

I have a habit of reserving way too many books from the library meaning that I haven't gotten around to reading most fanfics yet, oops. That's on me.

@ta1k-less - I adore her writing style!! Fun fact, one of her atla fics was probably the first multichap fic I had finished in roughly five years. She's very funny. Love how she fleshes out Ishvalan culture. Also draws sometimes and has started IDing her own art. Mostly FMA, multifandoms, tags fandoms.

@edisacornball - boomer he knows Edward very well, if that makes sense. Like, reading his fics I can tell that he understands Edward as a character very well. His Edwin fics are great. Has been in the FMA fandom for 15 years or something, which is crazy to me. Multifandom, mostly FMA.

@calangkoh - metas count as writing. So not a fic writer, but their 03 metas are wonderful. Obvious spoilers for 03 if you haven't seen it yet. Sideblog, all FMA.

Gahh I just wanted to say thank you very much @royaiweek for giving me the opportunity to participate in such a wonderful event this past week! Writing about Roy and Riza has both broken my heart and cursed my soul all at the same time, and I really can't get enough of them!

I also wanted to say thank you very much to everyone who has reblogged or liked or left a kudos or comment on one of my fics this week! I'm trying to get through the replies with finals and such, so I'll get to yours soon!

You know what I love about Royai? The possibilities are endless. Arakawa just created this masterpiece with such a rich world and fascinating characters that you can really go anywhere with them. You want a wholesome family fic with Roy worrying his mind over a pregnant Riza? Step right up. Spicy undercover with mutual pining and jealousy? Yup, got that too. Tooth-rotting fluff? Darker themes and moral philosophy? An entire slew of AUs? Full multi-chaptered fics that will rip your heart out and heal it all at the same time? FAM WE GOT YOU.

And that's not even mentioning the entire rest of the FMA cast.

I commissioned @chewytran to draw this scene from my Royai Father's Day fic In My Loving Care and I don't think I'm exaggerating in the least to say that this blew me away and exceeded all my expectations in every way possible. ❤

This fic was very raw and intense to write, but also very healing to express the kind of love these two share. This scene in particular is very dear to me and a turning point in the story, and I don't think anyone else could have captured this moment so well in their art.

I very highly recommend commissioning this amazing artist with all my heart--she was always so very kind and I got soooo excited whenever she updated me! Thank you so very much again, my dear friend!

Raven Cycle Big Bang 2020 Masterlist

The 2020 Raven Cycle/Call Down The Hawk Big Bang has come to a close!

When we started this event we couldn’t have known what 2020 would end up being, so our appreciation goes to all participants for being so resilient and marvellous and sticking with us until the very end.

I… honestly have too many to count 😂 off the top of my head, here’s what’s marinating in my Google drive as we speak!

for fma: (1) the next instalment of a study in reformation (college au royai; i was reminded of this by @eomma-jpeg and @thatisadamnfinecupofcoffee 😆) and (2) a fic centred around dressmaker!roy that i was discussing with @littlewitchbee the last time 🩵 i also have a song in the works and i really liked the lyrics for this one but i cannot for the life of me settle on a melody that appeases myself 🥲

for spy x family, aka my latest and current hyperfixation: (1) Eden AU, which will be a one-shot (famous last words but my brain cannot take anymore multichaps FR); (2) a 5+1 thing that’s basically a character study of Yor and is an excuse for me to write smut under the sloppy guise of healing from grief or whatever it is; (3) the next instalment of all the love we unravel, where we get a glimpse of protective loid (yes @nightofnyx8 I see you and I love you); (4) a ridiculously complicated longfic that is too much plot and too little writing, predicated on the tag ‘lovers to strangers to enemies to coparents to enemies/lovers’; (5) a song that is loosely related to (4); and (6) some other bits of family fluff in the form of very half-assed one-shots that may never see the light of day 😆

Do you prefer writing one-shots or multi-chaptered fics?

Honestly,,,, one shots.

I have loved writing in the meadow and it was a serious test of “can i even …. Can i even write that much” come to find out that i can 💀

But i like little snippets and cute quick ideas. I also um love writing makeout scenes and those are easier to pump out in one shots lol. I am also a whore for instant gratification, so one shots are just more fun for me

BUT i really like multi chapter. I have a big college au in my mind that i hope will see the light of day but im not sure.

40. If someone were to make fanart of your work, what fic or scene would you hope to see?

Oh my gosh oh my gosh idk idk uhh heres ideas for in the meadow

I really love the scene when milly and knives are sitting on the bench in chapter… 8? And @noaafishfieldguide did art of that and i sobbed

But i think…. Any fanart is incredible but i would love to see peoples interpretations of moments when knives and milly are alone. Like sitting at the apple tree or just hanging out around each other

There are some moments in the coming chapters that i would ummmm i would love to see fanart of…..

But i have other works !!! most of my other stuff is already based on sketches so there’s already artwork, but i’d love to see people draw for any of those,,,, especially the royai one…….

53. How do you spend your time when it comes to fanfiction? Are you primarily a fic reader, writer, or a perfect 50/50 split of both?

Ummmm no. as of late my fanfiction reading has been put on the sidelines bc ive been writing and editing so much.

Before in the meadow it was like 80% reading other fics and 20% writing my own oneshots that never saw the light of day.,,,, but now its like 95% of the time im writing my own and when i need inspo or someone posts something awesome i will read it

I just get caught up in my own stuff… i literally write it for myself lol

Hello friends and followers!

7000 follows stuck up on me a bit out of the blue and that number just keeps going up (as of posting I’m sitting just shy of 7.2K), so I thought I’d do something fun as a thank you for all of the amazing support I’ve received over the years!

Here’s what you do!

Send me an ask (on or off anon) with an option from A (characters and ships), B (au settings), and C (optional dialogue prompts)! There are four fandoms listed (BNHA, Fairy Tail, ATLA, and FMA), eight subcategories for settings (including canonverse), and 50 different dialogue prompts to choose from. You must specify if you want your request to be sfw or nsfw. I’ll be working on these as quickly as I can, but I’m prone to writing longer fics, so keep that in mind!

2) Is there a trope you’ve yet to try your hand at, but really want to?

probably high school or college au! i think there's a lot of room for interest and intrigue there but i've never actually done one.

3) Is there a trope you wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole?

enemies to lovers. i'm sorry, i know, i've committed a cardinal sin in fandom. but i have reasoning--this trope has honestly been ruined for me because of just how bad it has been done so many times and while it does give for some good erotic (possibly homoerotic) fight scenes, i just don't think i could write it in practice.

7) Share a snippet from one of your favorite pieces of prose you’ve written and explain why you’re proud of it.

forgive me for the long snippet but it's this section from i see the morning sun:

Roy rushed to the eastern side of the balcony, taking in the beautiful sight of the orange, pink, and near-red gradient against the blue sky. It’d been years since he truly watched the sun rise, and as the sun broke across the horizon, tears brimmed in his eyes. He leaned against the railing, taking in the sight as he emotion overcame him. He didn’t know if there was any natural sight better than this.

And then Riza joined him. Her amber-brown irises shone almost red in the increasing sunlight, orbs of swirling color against bruise-like circles underneath her softened eyes. He’d been unable to see her features fully until now, and it occurred to Roy just how tired his lieutenant looked. By the pallor in her face and her sunken cheeks, it pained him to see the current state of her visage.

But it was Riza. He could see Riza. All of her beauty for him to behold and in the light of the morning sun, nonetheless! For all of two weeks, Roy believed he would not see her again. But he saw her now, and he saw her for all that she was. His lieutenant, his Riza, his Queen.

i love hospital royai, there's a lot of angst and emotions to explore in their dynamic, especially post-promised day. and i really liked writing in a sunrise for roy because one of his last sights was the sky just before dawn in the scene at hughes's grave.

11) Is writing your passion or just a fun hobby?

it is a hobby that i am extremely passionate about, i think that's the best way to put it!

I’m so sad that I only have 3 fics to rec this month because real life caught up to me :((((( my job had a huge event for Juneteenth that I was mostly in charge of putting together so I’ve had zero time to read. Hopefully I’ll make up for it in July but for now please enjoy the fics I did get a chance to love this month <3
