i started reading ttsbc bc of my friend and mainly for the desert duo AND ITS SO GOOD. LIKE. I WANT MORE! i thought it other ships wouldnt be as interesting for me but i got so invested in this series!

Ok, so their hammocks when they were kids were patchwork, they were kinda just made of whatever material was on hand that Etho's supplier was able to get ahold of! Back then the Anarchy was only a few years ago, so the supplies in the under-city were much sparser. So in the over-city they have much nicer hammocks! Like, soft spreader bar hammocks with lots of nice pillows and stuff!

And of course, they have their beloved plushies from when they were first adopted! Grian has his stuffed llama Pizza, Pearl has her stuffed dog Tilly, and Jimmy has his stuffed cow Daisy! They're pretty beat-up, but they're also very comforting, a memory of the first night when the three of them felt truly safe in their lives.

Jimmy is the only one, except for Joel, who knows about Lizzie driving the train (or maybe not)

Jimmy and Joel tolerate somewhat of Grian visiting them at work, Joel says "it's less boring with this idiot here" Jimmy thinks alike (maybe not the idiot part, sometimes he thinks he's more of an idiot, at least his clumsiness makes him feel that way)

Grian definitely didn't blackmail Joel and Jim (no Tim) because he saw Lizzie in the driver's seat (but nobody would probably believe him anyway if he one day decides to tell on Lizzie, his reputation of being an annoying prankster has exceeded him by far)

Joel always yells at bdubs because he's scared of getting the train delayed and he hates horses

Zedaph works as an engine driver too (Lizzie always needs to be careful not to accidentally walk in on him, because he sometimes replaces Jimmy last minute)

Gem, tho not alway very enthusiastically, helps out when someone falls ill (the pay isn't shabby so "why not" she thinks)

Gem owns a small boat on which she sometimes sleeps, she can't live on it completely because it would be to isolating

Gem loves to poke fun of Joel at work because she knows he's been scolded for ruckus behaviour before and now he needs to swallow his pride to the amusement of Gem (Lizzie, tho not in front of others at work, loves to join in on these shenanigans)

✨️Welcome to my Grian HeadCannon rant✨️

Hi, so I'm writing this on my phone while watching Hermitcraft. Lol. These are thoughts that have been bouncing around my head for a while.

-Grian's wings-

I think they shapshift. Think about it. We, the audience and the artists, are constantly making different variations of Grian. Either through the art itself or through headcannons. "Cannon" wise, we are the Watchers, and We gave Grian his wings.

There's Parrot Grian, which is pretty much default Grian at this point. Then there's white winged Grian, which could either be a dove or a chicken. Theres the desert birb Grian because of Life series Desert-Duo. There's the recent King Fisher Grian because of his fishing addiction this season. Then there's his Watcher form, which usually ends up being biblical accurate angel. Which I think the multiple wings are the different kinds of bird avian hybrid We make Grian into. (This will probably be the only "original" thought that's been going through my head. The rest of this is me compiling HCs I've heard/seen/watched and have been brimming full to talk and analyze, tho the analyzing will probably be a different post lol)

-Grian's Family-

There's a lot of HCs when it comes to family connects to Grian. There's YHS background that left him as an abandoned kid in Japan. Nadia225 gave Grian adopted Mafia parents, which is really cool, and you should watch their videos because they're really talented. And they gave Grian Bio-parents where one is a Water and the other is a Listener. And they're royalty. There's HCs of him being adopted by Philza (which honestly makes no sense to me because I think Grian is older than Philza. Character wise too.) And then He gets adopted by Xisuma. So parental figure-wise, there are a few to choose from.

Sibling wise... that's even bigger. There's the classic Jimmy and Pearl. There was one of Scar and Pearl being sibs to Grian. (The sibling dance animation that I can't remember the youtubers name to credit) There's Etho, through choice, with Nadia225 (or that's how I've interpreted their interactions lol). And then there's Martyn who gets thrown in, too. (But this just might be me.) Back to parent Philza, Grian gains Wilbur, Techno, Tommy, and occasionally Tubbo as younger brothers. I guess We see Grian as a big Family dude. (^○^)

Extended family tho... I have yet to see anything about aunts and uncles, not even grandparents, and my brain isn't coming up with anything.

Parent Grian always ends up adopting Tommy, but I think I've seen at least 2 fanfics where it was Tubbo instead.

-Watcher Relationships-

It's so weird. Like. Do We have a Feral Sibling relationship with Grian. Or are We mortal enemies. Is he traumatized by Us, or has he fully accepted being a Watcher. Like, I love the angst fics as much as the next Watcher, BUT PLEASE, I NEED MORE POSITIVE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN US, would love any fic recs anyone has, lol.

-Martyns cannon-

I still need to actually research this one, but at the end of Evo (Grian pov) it is /heavily/ implied that Grian joins the Watchers, seemingly by choice. Then I moved on to hermitcraft 6-9 and binge watched that. So if there's any Martyn Cannon that can be added on plus his "headcannons" feel free to do so!

I have said this again but I love those fics where tango and Jimmy being two hybrid races but both hail from big social races so both are pretty clingy towards their friends and romantic interests. So when they saw each other they immediately got crushes on each other because their instincts are so similar.

For example:

Flocks and Pyres both have strong emphasis on food giving half because the Nether is a horrid ecosystem and half because flocks need to share food in their original nomadic life style.

Flocks and Pyres both also have massive emphasis on gift giving. Flocks tend to focus more on handicrafts and pretty stones while pyres focus more on jewelry and yes gold. (Yes Jimmy was so attractive to Tango because he has golden wings. Even tho avians taste like Grian sleek and powerful wings over his fluffy mess while Jimmy was interested because pretty man like the hopeless romantic avian he is.)

Not to mention the whole nest and den instincts going brrr (Blazeborns are more about making a place safe for their other half while avians is more about making a comfortable and pretty place for their other half. Which is why when the ranch burned tango didn’t have a good time)

So like they are singing to the same song pretty much. (I also have this headcanon where Jimmy mimics blazeborn tango noises using chirps as a unconscious form of courting/flirting. And it’s adorable)

So pretty much what is romantic for blazeborns are also romantic for avians. Usually because of different reason but similar in effect.

Grian in a dress? Or Mumbo?

Grian is now I’m a dress and loves it, I was gonna draw mumbo aswell but I didn’t like how his sketch was going so I ditched it, I might draw him in a dress later if I feel like it.

I changed up some stuff regarding brushes I used and like this outcome better so hopefully I don’t switch more stuff up and confuse myself again lol

He definitely loves this tho, his wings are pretty big compared to other avians so sometimes even avian moded clothes are still a bit restrictive but since the dress is backless and the corsets back is shortened he has full motion with his wings, and he is very happy about it, he really needed that wing stretch with all his pesky birb chaos! =D

Bubble says: Long sleevesssss, OoOooOoo I can stretch my wings out fully! This is amazing, I should wear dresses more!

It has taken me far too long to get the chance to respond to this ask and I have been so impatient because adjsaklfhaskghjd someone actually saw and enjoyed my unedited babbling about avian!mumbo :')

anyways I think I already said most of what I have coherent ideas on, and the rest is just nebulous vibes and happiness and fluff and hurt/comfort potential, but! I can share doodles and also reiterate/expand upon stuff I have already said

(putting it below a cut so I can make it soso long)

WING FLAPPIES!! I feel like this would definitely be something he'd appreciate about having wings, because I feel like it would be a more satisfying expression of emotion than like. stomping or bouncing or whatever. He would also totally struggle to control his avian body language, you can read his wings/ears/tail like a book, he's so unused to paying attention to and stifling his bird gestures. (Grian finds this beyond hilarious especially, because he can read Mumbo even better than everyone else being another avian)

His wings are red and black, though I haven't entirely decided if I'm gonna switch which goes where to make it match Grian's wings better. Since Grian is a Scarlet Macaw, Mumbo really ought to be too, but that would look just. so goofy. with his color scheme

AND SPEAKING OF LOOKING GOOFY- his wings look so silly for the first couple weeks. Until the feathers grow in properly, they're just kind of gradually more fluffy. raw chicken. wings. stuck to his back. because that's what baby parrots look like apparently! And then also pin feathers, before finally being pretty feathery bird wings

He also just accidentally passively collects the other members of Boatem's clothes. Grian does this too, but intentionally. Mumbo just does it without realizing and then gets confused about it because he doesn't understand the whole nesting thing, so someone else has to explain it to him

Oh and Mumbo tries to just go about his life without any changes or accommodations for his wings at first, because he doesn't want to ruin his clothes or generally have to change his routines. Grian and the others do not put up with this and persuade him to take proper care of the wings instead (<- this is a constant uphill battle for months)

On a more overarching note, Mumbo initially Does Not Like the wings, because they're just tiny and kind of ugly things that get in the way of his elytra and make him have to get all his shirts edited and they don't really do anything but cause him problems. Then once the wings start getting feathers and stuff and they have to start making preparations for learning to fly, it kind of becomes a bit of a bonding thing that brings Boatem together, with Mumbo starting to get used to them and accept them, and everyone else being able to help out with their care some (preening, stretches and exercises...).

Ultimately (probably sometime around HC 9), Mumbo ends up quite loving his wings in the long run. Once they're fully grown they're actually pretty impressive (since he's so tall they end up being a fair bit larger than Grian's, much to his annoyance) and Mumbo ends up putting a fair bit of effort into their upkeep and keeping them all nice looking (at least, when he's not too busy with other projects). He does still find a bunch of the other avian traits a little embarrassing (nesting, chirping, dietary restrictions, wings giving away his thoughts...) but he gets used to them.

i'm going tell you... that they met before the vex arc :3c

vex commune is a great place! a little village with a wall partially around it, full of vexes who work together to survive. they have little farms, one single old goat, and they go out to hunt. and they are very against the hunters. they actively fight any that breach their area.

they're also rough. sharp-edged. they solve arguments through fighting. (their vex form can heal them so it's not like they're putting each other out of commission) they don't shy away from violence, and they like to live unapologetically. and... they do more than just survive. they make drinks and have little parties and celebrations, they dance and spar, they have communal events and train together. they go on patrols and have each others' backs. they're very protective of their own! a vex pack!

there's one more vex oc that will be in this arc, nadia. she's more of a calmer, guiding presence. she's older, and she's lost her mate, and... just like scar and grian, she isn't originally from this world :3c

grian being an avian is definitely tricky. (they're honestly just surprised he's even alive, with feathers like that—)

as for him being scar's mate, they definitely think he can't possibly give scar what scar (as a vex) needs. this becomes obvious when they ask grian about their mating marks, and why only grian is marked. (they don't know about avians and feathers.) they think surely this is unfair for grian's partner!

cue grian stressing himself out that they might be right and he's a bad mate to scar.

while the others learn to accept grian and realise they might've been wrong, grian also learns about vexes! for example, that they also like their wings touched, and it can be intimate and soothing for them! (just another failure on his part.)

of course scar is fiercely protective of his partner and madly in love though, so they're gonna be okay <333 and the others will eventually come to understand, too. it might just take a while, because it's all so very new to them.

(in the rp bit, you can see that it's even noted that there was a shift over time, right in this sentence: Despite claiming victory during their previous dispute over insensitivity, Kane clearly cares to get this right.)

Even a Watcher is being Watched

-"BECAUSE IM ME"- Those simple words came out of the mouth of the dirty blond boy muffled by his closed teeth,he was angry, not at "tim" for confronting him, no no, he couldn't anyhow, he was mad at himself.

He was mad that not even he, a watcher, A god, being of chaos, creator of the so-called "Death games", that he as powerful as can be is still a cursed soul.

When grian first noticed was on the first day, on the first game, when he accidentally killed scar, although grian didn't tough of it for the first few days, it become more and more clear how no matter how much he tried to keep scar safe, it will bounce back, to the point in where it was a red and green duo, the duo that destroyed its own home, in where grian was forced to kill that same man, the man he screamed at to put some clothes on and be more protected, the man who'm he promised loyalty to, and the man he loved most, just that; kill him with his own fists, on the remains of his desert, close to a grave.

He never will forget the pain it caused to kill that man, the man who didn't hit grian even tho he was "betraying" him.

Pain knowing that Scar was willing to let grian take his life away from home.

The blood on his knuckles, the phantom feeling of his hugs, of grian's fist against scar's face.

Thats why even if it was for 10 seconds of that pain, he could not take it and decided to take his own life.

The second time was also to that cat-loving-guy, he told him to not be together again and that "everything that happend before does not matter now".

At that point he understood that those events where part of his curse, like Jimmy's,just that not so obvious, yet again on his ignorance,thinking that he could break it on a heartbeat,but no. He hurted the brunette and himself with those lying word's, and not just Scar but also his teammates, mostly Mumbo, who he made sure to take out the "game" taking once again the life of someone he loved with his whole heart.

The feeling was more bearable now, and that made grian feel sick.

The thrirth game was one of the hardest

As someone might think, being the soulmate of the person you first loved and abandoned is not a easy thing.

He tried to be as cold enough, to drive Scar away but it didn't budge, he just forgave grian and continued to be at his side, that something grian never got happy for.

And yet again he managed to hurt Scar one more time, on the search of something, someone else, he found a second-fake-soulmate; He and BigB called themself's "secret soulmates" even tho the secret part did not last more than a few days before Scar overheard them, hearing how grian was with someone else, doing all the things he wished grian to be with him.

Yet never said anything directly, just that one chance for grian to be truthfull with some "cookies", a painful reminder for the avian of what they used to be, and a reminder of the fact that he should not be griving over the thing he destroyed.

Not to mention the death of his secret soulmate, and his own soulmate being because of grian's own recklessness.

On the forth game it was more easy to deal with at least on the beginning it was, he got to see scar over the distance, and got a small group "bad boy's" he was happy for a while, even played as a watcher making more boogie's, to not "being sastificed with how fast the kill was made"

Grian's was feeling a little bit better over his curse, even Tim was having improvment's not dying first.

He even forgot about it, everything was going as good as it could, alies and enemy's not being that apart, for both good and bad. He made shinenigans and even a few good moments with his teammates.

That until that day, the day grian killed both of "his boy's", one was not his fault or so grian says to not get over the fact that both curses are coming back.

The other one was also an accident, people knew him too well, they knew that he could not get over a button unpressed. Yet it backfired for Lizzie pearl, and himself

Once again killing one of his teammate, close to his death.

And to no other than the "canary of death" the so-called "Death omen" even, his almost brother, bestfriend and also someone he loved and adored.

He could not forgive himself for doing it again, and for being sickeningly happy for it.

Grian never understood how his watcher's feelings and his more "humane" feelings could co-exist and yet they did, creating even more wilt on his already dying heart.

in empires s1, both scott and xornoth have trouble walking through doors because of their antlers. Like xornoth will be chasing someone or something then he just hits the doorframe with a CLANG or scott will be trying to get outside and he just gets stuck and has to get someone to free him

speaking of those antlers my own hc is that when scott found the book in that tomb, he went from a regular elf to having the antlers and like deer ears / deer hybrid thing, during his elsa arc he shed them / he sawed them off because he felt he wasnt worthy but they grew back and sometimes have icicles hanging off them

jimmy hates the crust on sandwiches in all universes

c!purpled and c!punz are brothers, or at least sort of, c!purpled is an alien who crash landed on earth at like 5 years old and tiny 10 year old c!punz found him and they became very close, c!punz taught him earth culture

Poor Scar wakes up and finds the avian glued to his side. Grian won't leave him alone and nimbly chases him through the habit all morning. The Vex hybrid collapses exhausted. This is the end, he thinks, that thing is finally gonna eat me...

The near-harpy creature approaches, dark eyes trained on his form and...

Drops a serving of rations in front of him.

Scar blinks confused as the avian purrs and lays down next to him. Talons that could sever limbs gently lift a piece of food towards his mouth. Slowly, Scar reaches for the morsel, never taking his eyes off Grian. Is it a trick? Is he toying with him? Is he fattening him up before he tears him apart like the last potential mates?

But when he takes a bite Grian only purrs louder. The feathers adorning his neck fluff up and a jewel red wing fans over Scar's form. The purrs become a strange, almost human hum as Grian lazily looks up and scans the environment for danger.

There's something... almost comforting, Scar realizes, as he's sheltered beneath the hybrid's wings. He can't remember the last time he felt an inkling of security in this hellscape. Though like all the other experiments, this is probably just a cruel trick that will end when the avian tires of him.

But for now he's content nestled under crimson wings, listening to the haunting song of a fellow trapped creature. And for just a moment, Scar relaxes and pretends like the safety he's feeling is could be real.

What specific stuff does the fandom do that bothers you? Just curious I love seeing different peoples input on this

I'm personally just so tired of watcher grian (but I love avian grian tho). I love the designs and all the fanart, but it feels like he's the centre of everything and like he's the main character.

Which I get, grian is popular and the fans love him.

But I'm the same way with Scar, honestly. Scar, for me, is the centre of anything I make, cause he's my favorite hermit. So I'm not gonna complain about everything being grian centric when I do the same thing- just with a different hermit.

Personally, I find it really annoying when I try to find a fanfic and I specifically put the scar-centric or mumbo-centric tag and I get fanfics around grian where scar and Mumbo are there just to support and comfort him.

Or if I exclude the tag grian-centric and include the tag scar-centric and yet I still find fics centered around grian. It's so frustrating to me.

But, as I said in the tags of the post, these people are making this stuff for fun and I'm not about get mad at them specifically.

I find it frustrating, but hey, it's not hurting me and I can make my own stuff so that's exactly what I do!

So I know in Traveling Thieves, avians are meant to forget their loved ones & their names from the colony when they're sold off, including forgeting their own name as well and not using it (tho so far all avians we've had the pov of have been seen defiantly holding onto their own name at least, even if they don't give it out). And we've seen a lot of it from the main 3 avians how they'll be thinking about their cousins but the names would be struck out and such, presumably to symbolize either fuzzy memories or trying to block the memories out. But I'm curious about how successfully they've managed to actually block out those memories. Is it truly from purposefully trying to forget because of the rules, or is it just from how long it's been that they've genuinely started to lose memories?

These question may be answered when we eventually get the big meet up of all the different groups, so feel free to ignore this if the answers would give spoilers, but what would happen if two hypothetical hybrids who knew each other from their colony later met in the old continent? Like, I know they probably wouldn't say anything out loud about the recognition because they aren't allowed to, but would they still refer to them by name in their mind when thinking about them? I imagine it would be an internal battle between the rules that they were raised on, which state they should forget their past attachments and therefore consider the other a stranger, and the other part of them that remembers and can't close off those memories.

And I know the situation would be probably very different for our main 3 avians versus any hypothetical ones, what with being family and also Grian & Pearl having masters that are actively trying to help them unlearn the rules of the colony and how the rest of society treats them. But I assume we'll eventually see how those 3 react in that situation anyways further along in the series, so I'm more curious how it hypothetically would work for avians who maybe weren't like super close or anything, but they did know each other enough to remember each other's names. Do typical avians make themselves forget just because they're following the colony's teachings, or is it more about potentially trying to distance themselves from those memories so that they don't hurt them further by reminding them about when life was a little better and they weren't slaves yet?

Sorry this got really long and rambling. I'm just having lots of thoughts

Ok, as you said, some of this is spoilery, so let me try to explain this the best I can without spoiling anything 😆

They are not actually forgetting anything. They are trying to repress those memories as per the rules of their conditioned headspaces. When they are sold from their colonies and collared, their ties are cut, which is something they are raised knowing about. They know what it means, and therefore when they are sold, they've been so heavily conditioned and trained into these headspaces that they immediately begin repressing those memories.

In your hypothetical scenario, where two avians who knew each other in their colony but perhaps weren't super close ran into each other out in the Old Continent, they would most certainly recognize each other.

Again, I want to stress this, they are not actually forgetting anything.

There is no erasure of memories, no supression so intense they genuinely forget stuff, none of that. They still have all their memories, they just compartmentalize them and do not address them.

So if I were writing from the perspective of one of these avians looking at the other avian, I would probably have them refer to the avian by name, but struck out like you mentioned I do with Grian, Pearl, and Jimmy. It would be the same thing. And of course they would never say each others names aloud, and would give no outward indication that they recognize each other.

Hopefully this makes sense! I know it's a bit of a confusing concept 😅 if you or anyone else have any more thoughts or questions I'd love to hear them! I have a ton of fun world building, after all!

impulse always helps skizz to preen his lil wings, he's doing it so careful. and in last life there was two guys with wings. it's funny how both jimmy and skizz have little neat wings and grian's are so much bigger, he actually can fly on them. but they're more messy.

so when tango was sitting, nervous about jimmy being a canary hybrid and tango literally knowing NOTHING about birds and wing stuff, impulse was like

"ok, look, jimmy's wings are very sensitive, you need to be careful with them. never tell grian about it, he'll kill you, even if jimmy allowed you, grian just angry guy. idk, it's something with guys with wings, respect it. DON'T, i said, DON'T think about making nest, please.¹ it's something like your nether gem, but more... um. just don't."

and other other stuff. jimmy would be so surprised that tango knows even little details and still loves him

Idk if this is a fic i actually read half-asleep or if my brain just made it up but something something scenario where jimmy steals a bunch of tango's spare clothes to make a nest in the ranch and tango's like?? i guess?? he's cold? and someone has to explain to him that it's just a thing avians do and tango made him feel safe enough for that instinct to come out. and tango's like. What are the elemental!scarian thoughts? (also could you do like a really brief summary of what happens in elemental pls)

Ok so basically in Elemental its a city right with water, air, earth, and fire people and most of the fire people are from another country. Basically main character is a fire girl, parents are immigrant from fire country, and she's supposed to take over her dad's fire shop but it's like horribly not up to code and a water guy who just happens to be a city inspector bursts through the pipes by accident when fire girl gets angry and melts them a lil bit so the whole thing is them trying to not get the shop shut down after water guy accidentally reports all the like not great architectural stuff n blah blah scarian time

So instead of elements it's like hybrids bc we Hermitcraft fans love our hybrids. Fire is Avians, so Grian's the mc. Water is vexes and I cannot find a single way to justify this but what am I meant to make Scar if not a Vex or Elf, and Elves aren't hybrids sooo... but yeah that's all my current thoughts about it bc brain can't come up w an original plot and there's already like so much angst in the movie so it felt scarian appropriate.
