there’s a trend going on on tiktok rn where everyone’s posting their AP art portfolios + their themes and it’s making me so salty. not bc any of them are bad, but bc when i took AP art (for one semester lmao) my art teacher gave us SO MANY STUPID guidelines that our topic had to fit into. i can’t rly remember what they were but our topics had to be super complicated and unique and have all these underlying meanings to it…… but some people ive seen on tiktok had like complete freedom with that and it makes me so mad😭 i feel like i would have actually enjoyed that class and not dropped halfway through if i could have picked whatever topic i wanted instead of what my teacher wanted us to do. she was also strict with what mediums and styles we were allowed to draw in 😐 no digital, no linework, nothing “stylized”, had to be realism. and honestly my portfolio sucked bc of that lmao i HATE art teachers who put so many dang restrictions on their students because they want stuff done “their way”!!! like where is the fun in that!!!!

I always get self conscious when people talk about the amount of thought the goes/went into their art because there is.

there is no upper processing happening when I'm designing a character or background. my hand starts moving and my brain shuts off. I recognize there was probably a point in my life where this WASN'T the case but. like. it's why my art is like. mostly flat and lifeless. my art is never intended to tell a story because when I intend to I get angry/frustrated to the point of wanting to break shit because it's not going right. and I've tried to tell stories with my art both comics and stand alone pieces and it all feels fake or flat or.

idk.

I've TRIED to start and finish a piece where I've made conscious choices beyond "does this look good/right" and "am I being offensive in ways I'm aware of with anything here" but it just. makes me want to scream.

I learned people told stories with their art and I tried to and I stopped drawing for 5 years despite having. before that point been doing art studies for 8 to 10 hours a day for. 2 years.

I mostly just think it's because I have nothing to. say.

"Nobody wants to work anymore."

People are sending an average of over 100 job applications per day. They are often forced to send these many because companies are so disrespectful of the candidate's time and resources and will often not even bother to reply. Some people only get an answer 2 months after, and I've heard of cases where they only get an answer 5 months after. Lots of these answers end up being negative. Some interview rounds stretch over months or even a year, and if the company gets word that you are applying to other companies, you get dropped. Sometimes, after being rejected, they get contacted by the company as if they are a completely different person that never applied after the company finds them on LinkedIn. They are being asked for 3 to 10 years of experience for entry-level jobs that pay minimum wage (entry-level means no experience required). They are being told that they are hired and to show up on Monday to then arrive there on Monday and be told that they weren't hired and were actually proposed for an apprenticeship and needed to show up that Monday to take a timed test which will determine if they get the apprenticeship or not. They are being turned down from jobs because they failed an abstract AI made personality test that if the people that work at that company now took would also fail. When they ask for fair wages, they get fired and replaced by refugee workers who have no choice but to subject themselves to the atrocious proposals these companies make to them because they either do that or live on the street and starve instead of being cramped into a home with 19 other people. They are being discriminated against and refused even an interview for being LGBTQ+ or neurodivergent (here if you need to take medication during work most people will go to the bathroom so that no-one sees them and need to devise a plan to go at times where they can make it look like a habit instead of a timed occurrence). They are being asked uncomfortable personal questions that are illegal about their personal life because they are women, and no one enforces the law on these questions being illegal. They are struggling with getting any job at all because they were unable to finish their education due to circumstances beyond their control.

You don't get to tell people that they are lazy or don't want to work when you never had these struggles when you worked. You don't get to blame people for how atrocious and predatory companies are these days. You don't get to look at the job market today through the rosy tinted glasses that you saw it back when you could walk into an establishment with a 4th grade education and simply ask if they are hiring. If you dislike the generational divide, then stop acring like you are better than the generations that came after yours.

You definitely do not get to blame refugees for taking the atrociously predatory job offers that companies are making because they know they can get away with them. If your country was suddenly on the side of a losing war, would you stay there and die? Force your parents to stay there and die? Force your children to stay there and die? Stop calling them immigrants. If you choose to leave your own country to work in a country with better pay and benefits, you're an immigrant. If you feel forced to leave your country because staying could cost you your life and the life of your loved ones, you're a refugee. If you're still trying to push the "these immigrants are taking our damn jobs" rethoric that US racist republicans tried to push back in the early 2000s about Central and Southern Americans, you're an idiot. If you think that this is a problem exclusive to the West, look up bǎi làn (摆烂) a phenomenon currently occurring in Mainland China. Tǎng píng (躺平) has evolved into bǎi làn. People went from being so disillusioned that they stopped trying to not even trying at all because they feel like there's no point. If it keeps going like this, it will affect the global economy since the only reason the West can afford cheap manual labour is the atrocious treatment of its own citizens by China. Companies will just find someone else to explore, like they are already doing with refugees. Like they are already trying with all of us.

filial love - honestly didn’t care for this one very much because it was meant to just be more fodder for my AP portfolio but turns out my mom likes it a lot!! she says it reminds her of “the lion of judah ✝️” (whoever that is) so i was happy to give it to her! she displays it in her room so her fondness really carries this one’s rating: 10/10

play nice with your brother!! 🐻‍❄️ - i like this one a lot! because it’s one of the only paintings my hardass art teacher let me use neon colors on (or at least as neon as u can get with oil paint). usually he just paints over my colors to make them grayer. that guy… otherwise this one is just not very interesting. 8/10

koi pond 🎏 - PRIME EXAMPLE OF WHAT I MEAN when he paints over my stuff with gray!!! i was so excited to paint this one and added all sorts of flair that i like—pink dots as leaf highlights, super detailed colorful water—AND THEN HE JUST WENT AND SMEARED ALL MY DETAILS 💀💀💀 so i Hate this one and avoid looking at it as much as possible. 0/10 below it is a version from a diff angle that i did in an hour with shitty free acrylic verrryyy recently in college, and u can just see how i went ham on the colors right?! eugh. what could’ve been… 🪦

with heavy heart ❤️ - a pretty big old lady (18x24”). i feel obligated to like her because she won me the congressional competition for my district so i got to go to the capitol to see her framed there and briefly meet my stale white bread representative but HONESTLY all i can think about is how hideous my makeup was at the time and i get upset. 🙁 i do think this granny is very pretty though!! 7/10

my ocean blue 🪼 - this one im not sure if i like it or only tolerate it. i just wanted to paint a super colorful coral reef!! "🐠🪸🫧" you know?? but my mom and teacher said it Needed a message for ~intrigue~ so they brainstormed together (without me) and made me add this random ass child with a VR headset smack dab in the middle… something about cyberreality? IDK i just want her ass gone so badly. i also never got around to finishing the stripes on that fish in the front but nobody calls me out on it so it's whatever 🤷‍♂️ LOL 4/10

radial self portrait 🎯 - HUGE DEVIATION IN STYLE not only bcuz this one’s gouache instead of oil but also because i got to paint without an old man (art teacher) hovering over my shoulder!!! 😸 it was my first time painting something super stylized and i realized that painting can actually be Not Agonizing!!! 😸😸 this was at my summer camp where we had to come up with a radial pattern using a compass (i hate that little pointy shit) and then combine it with our self portrait. it’s me having a headache! i painted this in a single stressful sleepless night because i have HORRIFIC time management when i’m left alone so it’s pretty sloppy. also at the time i had those blonde e-girl bangs hahaha… i still like this one a lot!! i was just SO happy i didn't have to go photorealistic AND i could use my favorite colors (mainly hot pink)!!! 10/10 😸

One of my more vivid memories of high school is from a project in graphic design; we had to create a font by hand and draw an accompanying image to create a fake poster for a fake production.

For my image, I decided to draw a robot girl, and I was very excited because I was allowed to work digitally (at the time I was drawing su fanart almost daily so this was nothing short of a cake walk) During my process my teacher (that I very much liked and respected) came by and commented how it was looking “very Steven Universe” and to “be careful with that.” She gave me a paused direct look with this statement to make sure I got the message.

I remember being caught off guard by the comment and unsure how to take the critique. I wasn’t even trying to emulate a Steven Universe style, though it makes sense that it being half of what I drew all the time would yield these results. I remember feeling quietly ashamed and unsure of myself, the work that I was creating, and my relationship to my favorite cartoon.

Today, when I draw, I unconsciously go out of my way to make my art look as non-StevenUniversey as I can manage. I look at my old art and “be careful with that” pops into my head without warning. I think about cringe compilations featuring steven universe fans playing ukeleles (like me and my friends did in hs) and the many rant videos, and that infamous calarts artsyle post, and this horrible horrible feeling that looking like Steven Universe was the worst possible thing for my art to be.

Being an impressionable insecure teenager isnt a unique story, and to me it kinda feels silly how I’m just now confronting this strange shame that’s cast a dark shadow on my art, my youth, and a tv show I hold closer to my heart than I’d let myself admit. I truly dont think my teacher meant the unique kind of harm or lasting seed of shame that it ended up being. Maybe I was meant to go through this period of shame + reflection + acceptance. Maybe it was worth it to get to today to write this post. To leave a love and then return to it, stronger and wiser, and ready to love again.

• They would teach art

• One of the favourite teachers in the entire school

• None of the assignments they give are what the school board tehnically require, but they encourage creativity

• Also he has no care when it comes to grading so you can come to class with a roll of toilet paper and still get an A

• There is no learning in his class, it's more like an extended break

• I imagine they don't even show up half of the time

• It's a miracle they haven't been fired

• (The miracle is called Nadia)

Nadia

• As a teacher, i think she'd do history or geography

• But overall, she's definetly the principle

• If the school is short staffed, she can definitely multi-task

• As a teacher, she'd be very strict

• No talking, no whispering, no phones...really follows every rule

• And she's a little harsh on the grading too

• But it isn't hard to get a good grade if you listen to her lectures and take notes

• She's also very willing to help and really aims to teach

• If you ask, she'll find the time in her day to go over everything with you

• The obvious answer is chemistry and/or biology

• But i feel like his classes would be so much more

• He gets really immersed in teaching and he knows how to hold the students attention

• He's not a strict teacher by any means, but he does want everyone to learn

• When it comes to grading he's very flexible

• If he thinks you understand the subject, he'll give you a good grade even if it's not EXACTLY by the book

• Of course, he's open to helping students with his own subject but if you need help with other subjects, he's willing to help in that department too

• If you wanna get out of a class, just ask him about his day before he starts the lecture. He'll start rambling about random things until the class ends

• She would teach language and literature

• She's also very liked by the entire school

Got revenge on my teacher for only dress coding certain girls.

Remembered this out of the blue and thought I’d share.

Background info: I (16f at the time) went to a school that was K-12. We had multiple principals, one for the elementary school, one for middle, one for high school, and an overall principal who was in charge of all of them.

The principal of the high school, who I’ll call Ms. Smith, was notorious for only giving certain girls dress code violations. It always seemed to be the more “developed” girls that got in trouble. I once confronted her about it after she dress coded a friend of mine for having a short skirt while ignoring the fact that mine was even shorter. She mumbled some bullshit about my outfit being “more modest overall” and gave my friend a demerit (our school’s policy was 3 demerits = detention).

This really rubbed me the wrong way. So I hatched a petty little plan.

I was in charge of the art club. I’d been planning a project where I gave 10 disposable cameras to each grade in the HS to pass around and take pictures of their day. Afterwards I had them developed and mounted a display (before you ask, thankfully all of the pictures came out PG).

I knew I had to get permission from the principal. Instead of going to Ms. Smith, I decided to go straight to the principal of the whole school, Mr. Jones. He gave me the green light. I didn’t inform Ms. Smith of the project.

On the day I distributed the cameras, Ms. Smith found me during 2nd period and informed me she’d confiscated them due to not getting her permission. It was then that I informed her that I didn’t need her permission, because Mr. Jones had given his. She started at me with a sort of goldfish expression. I told her I’d be happy to return the cameras to each grade, but I had class, so could she do it? After an awkward pause she agreed. I thought the idea of her having to visit each individual classroom to eat her own words was hilarious. Even though she’ll never know why I pulled that stunt, it brought me joy to know I’d embarrassed her just like she embarrassed my friend.

from the midwest US (so there's not that much), but i was raised very much in borderline appalachia and the older i've gotten the more i've come to appreciate that as part of how i was raised, so i would say quilting! i was taught to quilt by the women in my family and i still cherish the connection to them through that

band of brothers in 8th grade, my history teacher would play it for us and i'm pretty sure he used it in place of actually teaching but he was a real one and also a drill sergeant so i don't think anyone argued with his methods

In honor of the Summer Olympics, fun fact about me: I was on the swim team* in high school. 🏊

Here's a poster my mom made to cheer me on during Senior Swim Night. 💛💚 (She took this photo of it back then.) I remember being so moved by how cute it was and her attention to detail; my hair looked exactly like that because I was growing out my childhood bangs, and the frog and duck are stuffed animals I had (and I remember they were SO soft), and they looked exactly like that as well 🦆🐸

*As you can imagine by just looking at me, I wasn't particularly good, at least for swim team standards (and if you think I'm small now, I was even smaller back then—when HS began I was scrawny and 4 ft.-something). Sure, I'm faster than normal people, but we're talking competitive swimming here.

I was the textbook definition of a bespectacled nerd. I had no hand-eye coordination (which is ironic as someone who can draw, I know) so forget about any other sports that required me to catch or hit flying objects.

Pretty much everything else I did, I excelled at naturally and without any effort: art, writing, piano, foreign languages (in jr. high I won the Best Spanish Student award and my freshman year German teacher called me a "German prodigy" which I didn't even know was a thing that existed but apparently it does). But athletics? That was the one activity I actually had to work hard at, which made the sense of accomplishment I got whenever I finally mastered a new swimming skill even sweeter. There's value in doing something just because you enjoy it, regardless of your ability.

I also had a late start in that I didn't learn how to swim until I was 9. (I wanted to when I was 6 but when my dad went to sign me up for lessons they were all booked, and he saw that there were openings for ice skating and asked if I wanted to do that instead. So other fun fact [that's also funny but in a different way because it was so unlike me as a tomboy]: I did Figure Skating when I was a kid.)

I was on the JV team. At meets, I was usually assigned to the slowest heat. (Although to my credit, whenever I was put in a relay, I was always made the anchor.) I could barely ever dive properly. I did open turns instead of flip turns, which slowed me down even more. And you know what? I didn't care. I loved swimming. I loved just being in the water. (Whenever we had dry land training after school I used my other extracurriculars as an excuse and skipped practice (sorry, Coach) because I didn't see the point if I couldn't be in the pool (yes I now realize those skipped workouts would've helped me be a better swimmer).) I wasn't in it to win it; I was genuinely in it for fun, for, well, the love of the game. Giving it my all, beating my own personal bests, feeling strong. The adrenaline rush of standing on the starting block, the Pavlovian response to the beep, the moment the roar of the crowd fades into the background and it's just you and the water. The camaraderie, cheering on your teammates. During practice they'd play music on the speakers (I remember my first time hearing "Sk8er Boi" was in the water doing laps); I'll never forget one random snapshot in time when the sound system was blaring "Heaven Is a Place on Earth," and the girls who were up on the blocks were dancing to it, and I thought to myself, "You know, maybe it is."
