S.E.E.S, but Pokemon. (Kudos to those who can tell who's who without the readmore)

More info after the cut!

Tried to make everyone look like themselves without adding clothing/accessories. More difficult than expected, but a nice challenge!

I imagine either only persona users can use their moves (at all, or effectively, not entirely sure which) or when they use their personas (personamon?) they appear as an altered version of their fully evolved forms. Kinda like the second one better, as a way to use more powerful attacks and keep in theme with Persona games

Tried to keep them with their elemental affinities:

Mitsuru Kirijo: Sneasel. It just had the right vibe for her, and I curled the tail (feathers?) to make it look like her hair (although Akihiko is standing in front of most of them).

Akihiko Sanada: Pawmo. I needed electric type, and with his affinity for boxing and being fit, I figured an electric/fighting type would work well for him! Didn't want to do Pawmi because it wasn't yet fighting type (maybe he evolves sometime after The Fire) and didn't want to do Pawmot because no one else is evolved, so having him be max evolution would feel *weird*.

Shinjiro Arakgaki: Scraggy. A solely phys skill user HAS to be fighting type. There were several choices for him - Mankey was one, I believe - though something about Scraggy's appearance made me go with it.

Minato Arisato / Makoto Yuki: Castform (Sunny). I like to make the wild cards pokemon with several forms, or the ability to transform in some way. His 'base' form in Tartarus is Sunny, since Orpheus has fire attacks, but he shifts with whatever element he's using.

Yukari: Ducklett (Shiny). She was just going to be normal ducklett, but then I remembered the shiny was pink, and it makes her more 'special' and talk of the school, so I decided that's fine haha. Flying is the wind equivalent, here, so it was hard to Not make her some sort of bird. It works though, I think!

Junpei Iori: Charcadet. Needed a fire type, and charcadet seemed spunky enough to be him, out of the ones available. After Chidori [redacted], his personamon changes from an Armarouge-equivalent to a Ceruledge-equivalent.

Fuuka Yamagishi: Psy attacks don't exist in p3, though they do in p5, who I also already pokemoned, but Psychic still fits both psy attacks and navi abilities, so I'll let them overlap. She was able to avoid being killed in Tartarus for 10 hours, so she would have been using teleport to keep herself safe, as well as other psychic moves to detect where shadows lurked. Wanted a pokemon not usually known for attacking, to fit more with the navi role.

Aigis: Iron Valiant. Another phys-heavy user, so I wanted fighting type, and Iron Valiant happened to be just that. Looks like Gallade/Gardevoir (*is* Gallade/Gardevoir but in the future/ an alternate dimension?) but is also distinctly Robotic. Luckily most people pin the oddness about her as 'why is she fully evolved and in highschool' rather than 'hey, that's not a pokemon I know, what the hell'.

Koromaru: Houndour (Albino). There are not too many fire/dark pokemon, to go along with Koro's fire/curse attacks, and one of them just Happened to be a dog. I had to. I also made up an 'albino' coloration, based off of real albino dogs. If shiny, as a genetic mutation exists, then others can as well!

Ken Amada: Dedenne. Very similar to Koro, there are exactly two (2) pokemon that are electric/fairy, as I equate bless to fairy type, and one of those was a legendary. So Ken is Dedenne. It oddly works out, since he looks up to Akihiko, and they're both small, rodent pokemon (who happen to be their pkmn generation's equivalent of pikachu :P)

I have Many more thoughts on this crossover, if anyone wants to talk about it! I have a few more P3 characters planned out (Strega, pharos, ryoji, nyx avatar), P4's Investigation team, and P5's Phantom Thieves, though I need to actually Draw them all.

"Wily's forces might be being controlled from his tower, but the commands sent from there to his forces abroad are actually broadcasted via a signal booster in that pyramid over there. Meaning if you can take the pyramid"

Then we can shut down all his forces worldwide that aren't in the immediate area of the Battle Frontier

Or better yet, issue a return command to send them all here, and then back where they came from!

So once the booster's taken it'll be easy to just fly in through those skull eyes right to hs gate"

Fortunately going up to the pyramid was easy enough, right up until they reached the bones leading up to the entrance. These unfortunately seemed to be a timed electric gate. They are very tempted to just walk through the gate. However, that is a very stupid idea. Notos slashes at one of the bones, attempting to destroy it. They're thick and unyielding, but it does seem like the current is only projected from one side of each the bones on either side. Perhaps blocking that side might disrupt the current.

…anyone have a particularly tall ground type? especially one who’s extra immune to electricity?

Quasar's Golurk does that, and across one of the three sets of bones, the current can't run anymore

everybody's almost through when one of aforementioned traps activates a Tatepakkan due to Raygor just barely crossing outside of the bones' radius, knocking the Golurk off step with the sudden pain. The last to cross was Virus, and she was right between the bones when the Golurk started to fall, reestablishing the current. Viper pulls Virus out of the way, narrowly avoiding getting electrocuted

Virus's surprisingly speechless, she clings onto Viper tightly. Oppy also tries comforting Virus, as she sees both her and Viper as new friends (perhaps mistakenly in Virus's case but oh well)

Going into the pyramid, there are lyrics flying over a massive pit of spikes. Without warning, blocks appear, then retract and appear a different place just as suddenly Kaladin looked at this once, and he shook his head. This was a good reason to use Light.

"... You have got to be kidding me."

"Any objections to being flown over, speak now."

I got no problems, it's already been one hell of a week. Virus, are you gonna fly over or do you wanna hitch a ride?

Notos calls out Battery, Sargent, Andes (Shiny Noivern), and Esper. Mercury, on the other hand, realized they don't have any flying pokémon. That's a lie, actually. There is one. Volbeat. Which cannot carry an entire human being across the murder pit. Which leaves either A.) Asking someone to carry them across (ew, talking to people) or B.) parkour (oh no. spikes.)

A shadow in the room… shifted. Became darker. Became a maw into Distortion. And out tumbled a certain Hisuian Zoroark! Who then landed as a sprawled mess on a section of safe flooring.

Well... You're on an incursion for real now. Hope you're prepared, as things tend to get hectic. But you probably already know that

Malkah crossed her forelimbs in the Bridge Four salute. With everyone's flying arrangements made, the Yoku blocks were easily defeated. What wasn't were the flying Wily bots - Lyrics and Tellys, but also these strange yellow blobs that would fly in from the side and then leave. Oppy was quite hurt when touching one. Fortunately the blocks left as soon as they arrived, but they grew more frequent as they ascended, until they came to an open room with a stble floor, and a machine with a forcefield - the signal booster!

“I guess we just… junk it? And we’re good?”

"It's not going to be that simple." Three... Two... One...

right as Ballade finished, the yellow blobs returned, but this time they formed a massive humanoid shape, with one evil red eye glaring at them

Wily Fortress Boss 3: YELLOW DEVIL

“… What the fluff.”

hey I know that guy he was in Smash Bros. you gotta hit the eye or something? That's how this works right?

Bingo. The issue is-

Yellow Devil shoots a few laser blasts from its eye at Top, Viper, and Malkah

-actually getting an opening to pull it off!

“Only ranged attack I knOW WEARS ME OUT! Aaark!”

Malkah did its best to dodge the lasers, using Shadow Sneak as a mobility tool rather than an attack as Viper jumped out of the way.

Ingrid return, Emmey you're up!

she releases her Garvantula Emmey who begins shooting electric attacks at the Yellow Devil as Viper shoots him with her Quick Boomerang attack. Virus has an idea, she uses her Gemini laser to clone herself, this distracts the Yellow Devil so Viper and friends could stay out of trouble while attacking. Notos shouts, causing their four pokemon to screech in response, shooting various ranged attacks at the beast’s eye. Malkah’s got Teru-Bozu and Chiri out, letting them use their ranged attacks as Enker raised his spear.

"Everyone! Stay behind me when it shoots! I'll block its fire!"

Viper and Emmey move behind Enker. This was met by the Yellow Devil closing its eye, and splitting its body into yelow blobs flying at Virus, reassembling at her location, hitting Viper, Virus, and Enker. Enker... admittedly wasn't expecting the splitting just yet. He took the hit, but it didn't charge his attack at all. Top Man desperately tries shooting beigomas at it, but only one connects with the eye Mercury glared at the Yellow Devil. Remember the laser rifle from p1? Yeah they're just shooting with that. Their aim isn't great, but they at least hit the thing once or twice. Probably. It's enough that Enker is able to move the girls away, or rather, Viper, as luckily that was a duplicate that was created by the Gemini laser. The replica disappears after being hit leaving the real Virus a ok.

JUDGE ABOVE WHY DOES NOTHING WORK ON THIS OVERSIZED BLOB OF SQUEEZE CHEESE???

this outburst is punctuated by Andes firing boombursts at the eye. A Zap Square from Quasar connects with YD's eye, causing it to close, and again split into pieces lobbing itself across the room, this time at Quasar and Oppy. Oppy narrowly avoids the yellow blobs, landing next to Ballade. Vasilyev fires his plasma cutter and the Power Stone at the eye, keeping up movement as he does so.

Whatever it is, looks like the eye is holding it all together! There's 7-8 defence droids in the Devil Line. During their fights with Mega Man he took them out with Electricity and explosives! If you have any of those weaponry use those now!

Ballade followed this statement up with a barrage of Ballade Crackers. Luckily Viper was still firing her Quick Boomerang at the Yellow Devil. Mercury switches to Electric attacks, firing off a few Sparks.

I’ve got something explosive but I’m not sure how big the boom’s gonna be! Grows said they’d never tested how much nitroglycerin was in the batch I’ve got! JUST USE IT!

"You'll never know unless you use it!" “Oh dear.” EVERYONE DOWN!

Vasilyev takes out a bag, made of cloth, and lights a spark on it before tossing it with his suit’s gravity gun (esque thing)

Oppy grabs Virus and gets her down (luckily that was not a duplicate Virus). Malkah's down on the floor. Viper reads the room and gets down. She also protects her Garvantula from the upcoming explosion.

Onto the floor we go. Yay. ^_^

The bag explodes roughly on contact with the Yellow Devil, filled with around 6-7 pounds of nitroglycerin, stabilized in liquid form inside fruits grown from an alien world. Thankfully Vasilyev got lucky - Yellow Devil's eye was open, and thus a blast of that power tore through the Yellow Devil's systems, and took quite a bit of the room with it. Thankfully the floor survived, but the top of the Battle Pyramid is no longer skull

Why didn't you use that earlier?

Quasar elbows the metal Top Man. This is less effective than he would have liked

It could have done nothing or it could have killed us all, I wasn’t sure. Grows could have put anything into it! Think I saw them make one with napalm in it once…

Viper and Virus are both trying to recover from the loud explosion sound. Notos clambers out from the pile of debris they’d been half buried in, grinning widely despite a slight limp on their right leg. Malkah’s still a bit disoriented from the blast. Quasar looks over to the signal booster, which is no longer shielded

Now to send a signal to all the Wily bots across the world to come here and then enter standby. That will stop the attacks for a while until we get Wily outta here

Hi There!

Hm... man made looking Glitch Pokemon? There are certainly a few that have a more machine like quality.

Most prominently ゥ .4 (pictured here) is a very mechanical looking pokemon with almost robotic looking features. Its body is made of an alloy much stronger than steel, though it does not have classification as a steel type. It's also a good deal smaller than most glitch pokemon, being only about 5 meters tall. It used to have a reputation for being dangerous around one of the labs I used to work at. Though upon moving to Glitch City I've learned it is actually very calm once it's been trained out of its tendency to surge.

Additionally there are several glitch pokemon that either strongly resemble Magnemite or possess heavily magnetic qualities.

The most commonly seen of these, TRAINER, resembles a very large cluster of magnemite, as if dozens of them had been stuck together in a large chaotic mass. They are generally fairly docile, however, and don't possess the strong electrical capabilities of a magneton. They prefer to hover away from civilization and feed off electrical charges.

The largest and by far the most volatile of the magnetics is -pkmn. This pokemon weighs about 5000 lbs and can grow up to nearly 60 feet tall as a result of its intense levels of magnetism. Its body is often so covered in metallic debris that it can be difficult to tell where the pokemon's body actually begins. Usually when viewed in the wild, it will be within a giant mass of metal it's attracted. As a result of this it is very prone to causing surges or explosions. Studying these can be a challenge since its intense magnetism can cause Pokedexes to lock up and malfunction when in range. When calm, however, its magnetism creates a low, melodic hum that can be heard for miles.

Finally there is O, another magnetic pokemon with so much variety in its shape, size and density that it cannot easily be given an exact height or weight! O's height, weight, appearance and stabilizations differ based on its gender, of which there are five unique ones! At its largest, female O can grow to be nearly 40 feet in height, and stabilize into 'M, while the smallest, ☿, tend to stabilize into Arcanine and begin at only 2 feet tall. Other stabilizations are males, into Nidoran Male, and two more that stabilize into Slowpoke and Cubone respectively. Each stabilization retains varying amounts of electrical charge and will sometimes possess enough steel plating to make it register as a steel type along with its primary typing!

Reuniclus is best described as a rebellious teenager, don’t be fooled though. She won’t listen to anyone telling her anything but will listen to her Zom with no issues. You can bribe her with Bitter- Burger Steak Curry, she’ll just be salty. Despite how she acts Zom loves her the way she is, why else would he buy her a punching bag. She’s very appreciative of him.

Spunky Lizard . Heliolisk is almost always sunbathing so he generates a lot of extra electricity, he’s the reason Ramshackle has electricity. Well and every other electric type. Since he has so much extra energy he’s always ready for battle. When Heliolisk gets excited he tends to shock everything in radius, it’s a wonder how Zom’s still alive. Heliolisk is also in Zom’s “10 Strongest Electric Types” so he’s a powerhouse. Also portable shade, he doesn’t mind having either PKMN or people under his frills. He’s is also taller then most other Heliolisk being 4’ 00” instead of 3’03”. He also keeps breaking into Savanaclaw and Scarabia plz send help

Ditto is an Interesting case, they can copy a human down to the T but struggles copying PKMN. They’re carefree and playful, like a toddler due to this, they enjoy being Zom’s “Lil’ Helper”. Ditto is quite obviously the opposite of Zoroark. Ditto doesn’t like being alone either so Zom gave them a Whooper, they’re best friends. Also there was no Azul was gonna win but that’s besides the point. Just a happy lil’ baby.

Did you know Leafeon’s cells are related to a plant? Yeah she acts like a plant, photosynthesis is common thing for her. She’s loves taking baths as well. With a very heavenly scent around, Zom makes sure she looks as best as she can. Leafeon is however a little trouble maker, unintentionally. She digs little holes and lies down in them a lot, so expect to just randomly trip around Ramshackle. Or she’s “planting” new stuff everywhere to lots of trimming has to be done. Leafeon doesn’t really fight but will if necessary. Absolutely loves when Zom decorates her in a variety of flowers and various plants. She has to put on a little show afterwards and will follow Zom around to show off new look.

i tried to emulate red’s team for ichiro lol. the pachirisu on there is a nod to the team that won competitive champions with a pachirisu on the team but i think i’m going to change it to something on the pawmi evolution series because i love pawmi lmao

jiro’s team is a lot more cracked than i thought it was while putting them together lol. initially i wanted the bros to be fire, water, electric for their colours but you can’t tell me cinderace wasn’t made for jiro lmao

a handful of saburo’s pkmn have pkdx entries that mention prickly attitudes lol

the bros all have a rowlet evolution because bukuro!!!!!!

samatoki’s pkmn either have something to do with his name or general tragic vibe lol. his salamence is a rival pkmn to ichiro’s flygon and that incineroar is his fighter spirit

officer jenny in the anime had an arcanine so so does juto lol. the machop is his muscle he likes to bring along on missions (like rio) and the others represent his various interests. lopunny lol

bugs and tough mons were what i was going for for rio. i think i’m going to change aggron to bastiodon tho for its shield head 🤔

ramuda’s pkmn are either cute, unfortunate or both lmao. i went with type null but i did give ramuda a mewtwo at one point. it’s a legendary tho so i’m thinking of changing it 🤔

gentaro’s are all about his vibe really lol. tropius tho is there for his love of dinosaurs 🤗

dice’s pkmn are all primed for wild living lol. gyarados was a magikarp dice won from gambling and he fully intended to eat it lmao. aegislash is a remnant from the life he left behind

jakurai’s team i think needs a revisit 🤔 but for now, happini represents his renewed vow to heal/save and the others are graceful ass kickers lol. tentacruel is there because of his rhyme anima tentacles lol

i wanna say kalos but i know that's just because i maxed out the hours on my pokemon X cartridge back in the day, so it's the region that feels the Most Familiar to me. in terms of actual aesthetics / world design it's probably unova, since it's based on a real-life location i'm familiar with (NYC / the tristate area) and i find its take on that to be charming. shoutout to sinnoh also because platinum was the game that got me really into pokemon to begin with.

N, although picking him feels a bit like cheating since he's a bit outside the standard mold for rival characters in pkmn (he's older than the player character and isn't challenging the league alongside them). so honorable mentions to silver, barry, and bede as well

powerful trainer and gym leader

doesn't specialise solely in electric-type pkmn, but rather electric-type moves. this allows flexibility with his pkmn choices and makes him far more difficult to combat than many other specialists.

one of the few higher up league individuals that actually did very little regarding cyrus' torment and reign, which has earned him plentiful scrutiny from inside the league and outside.

as implied by canon, he experiences depression. specifically, he experiences major depressive disorder. it's genetic and, he's found, resistant to medication. medication helps alleviate some symptoms, but others maintain severity. he has peaks and dips, but finds himself at a lower baseline than the general population

unlike what's implied by canon, he isn't dislodged or otherwise cured by the player character giving him a challenge in a battle setting.

a big aspect of my portrayal with him is the battling with mental health, and its holistic impact on his relationships and life. volkner had attempted ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) and found that, during the second round when they scrambled up his usual team and had to scrounge up replacements, they missed crucial bits of information regarding his level of anesthesia. this resulted to him having awareness during and after the procedure, instilling fear, distress, and anxiety in him and prompting him to drop the procedure entirely.

also for anyone interested in AU ramblings, please enjoy the literal essay i wrote under the cut lol

THE PREMISE:

AU where pokemon exist in the DP canon. Universes are merged, so Amity Park exists alongside Kanto/Unova/etc in their respective real world locations.

Danny’s parents research/hunt dp-verse ghosts AND ghost pokemon. Their research is focused on the ghosts of once-living creatures, and also identifying the difference between “dead” and “living” ghosts. ex. A Yamask can be born from an egg, which means it never died, but it can also be the spirit of a dead person.

While the Fentons aren’t actively trying to exterminate every ghastly or duskull, they still have some serious prejudices against ghost types, and they DEFINITELY hate dp-verse ghosts as much as in canon.

The portal accident happens normally. Danny was due to get his first pokemon around the start of freshman year, but the accident (and his now spiraling school grades) put it on hold.

Instead, Phantom is exploring the ghost zone one day and passes by a Hisuian Zorua. Danny doesn’t think much of it, but the Zorua follows him home and quickly causes trouble. It seems to have a nasty grudge against humans, playing dangerous pranks against Amity Park’s residents and forcing Danny to send it back into the zone. After several return trips, it settles down and decides that it’s more interested in this not-entirely-living-or-dead kid than getting revenge. After that decision, Zorua quickly becomes Danny’s partner.

Since Zorua are inherently timid creatures and a Hisuian variant would attract a lot of attention (not to mention Jack and Maddie’s possible reaction), Zorua is almost always disguised as something other than its true form. Seeing a Unovan Zorua on Danny’s shoulder is common, as are Rowlet and Hoothoot. No one’s really sure where Danny caught them all, but they don’t care enough to ask.

Phantom, on the other hand, can be seen at night playing with a ghostly variant of Zorua previously thought to be extinct.

absol (stalks him for a year because Danny is a Walking Disaster and triggers all of absol’s danger senses. maybe it tried to prevent the portal accident and failed?)

eevee (lots of potential, connections to mutations/~molecules getting all rearranged~)

parents were pushing for eevee to evolve into umbreon, but………

sam:

bulbasaur (grass type, connection to “save the frogs” episode)

shiny purrloin (technically the family pet, but is fond of sam)

helioptile (generates electricity, connections to desert and ”hotep ra” episode)

rotom (initially a pest who possesses his tech, later forms a rotom phone relationship)

maddie:

weavile (intelligent, vicious hunter. has hands to help out in the lab)

houndoom (hunter, pack animal, loyal)

slaking (lazy and unassuming but very powerful. has hands to help out in the lab)

porygon2 maybe? (gift from vlad with the intention of hacking their systems)

^^^ weavile and slaking are maddie and jack’s starters. houndoom and porygon2 are bonded to the whole fenton family rather than one particular person.

crobat (vampiric, requires friendship- aka vlad isn’t completely evil)

skitty (nicknamed maddie)

noivern (vampiric, violent and cruel but can be tamed. maybe it bonds to Danny and defects?)

hydreigon (destructive and overwhelmingly powerful)

^^^ most of vlad’s pokemon are just displays of wealth and power. he hasn’t seriously bonded with any of them except for crobat, his starter, and skitty, his “sister’s cat”.

also a note that im not necessarily choosing pkmn that perfectly match a character’s theme or aesthetics, but instead ones that are realistic for them to have in this universe!

WORLDBUILDING NOTES:

Starter pokemon are gifted by the child’s parents. Traditional starters like charmander/bulbasaur/squirtle are only available to those sponsored by a prominent pkmn lab and/or rich parents.

Having a full team is rare unless you’re a full time trainer… it’s just too expensive to house and feed them. On a similar note, shinies are basically unheard of unless you’re stupidly rich.

Pokemon journeys are still considered a rite of passage, but aren’t a universal experience. Not everyone participates, and those who do usually only get 1-2 badges before quitting. The average age for new trainers is around 13-16, though legally you can start at 10.

Amity Park is a ghostly hot spot just like Kanto’s lavender town. There are a few gravesites, but not nearly enough to justify the amount of activity it receives.

The ghost zone primarily contains “dead” ghosts, but “living” ghost pkmn are attuned to the zone and use natural portals to traverse the world.

The Fenton family’s pokemon are all either dark or normal type, for type effectiveness and immunity against ghosts respectively. Any pokemon they give to their children will follow the same type theme in the hopes that they will join the ghost hunting business.

Danny:

was very excited to start his pkmn journey, but with his new ghost instincts demanding he protect Amity Park, he can’t see it happening anymore. Also, while Zorua gradually grows more confident and helps Danny with ghost fights, it still hates having human attention drawn to it and wouldn’t enjoy the publicity of gym battling.

is friends with loads of ghost pkmn, but he never officially catches any besides zorua. They’re residents of his haunt, not his teammates.

if the accident didn’t happen, his starter would either be hoothoot (because of spooky from the initial show concept) or a common dog like poochyena or lillipup… the Fentons spent all their money getting jazz a fancy eevee so Danny’s starter wouldn’t be nearly as impressive :’) rowlet would only be a possibility if gifted from Vlad, though Danny’s parents wouldn’t approve as it evolves into a ghost type.

Sam:

is very anti-battling at first. She felt that battling was abusive and was probably very loud and in your face about it lol. However, Bulbasaur loves to battle and wants to use it as a way to get stronger and evolve, so after a messy disagreement, Sam begins to see it in a healthier light. She still advocates for better pkmn rights, but is careful not to speak over those she’s defending.

would probably join team Aqua, Magma, or Plasma for at least half a day before realizing theyre evil lolol. (then she’d work with Danny and Tucker to defeat them on the exact same day)

Bulbasaur has a lengthy pedigree and comes from a line of contest winners. Neither it nor Sam have any interest in continuing that tradition though.

is the most likely person in the DP cast to become the champion.

Tucker:

is neutral on gym battling. He thinks the concept is cool and likes watching the championships on TV, but is way too much work to actually participate in. His pokemon feel the same and are happy just helping with his electronics.

is obsessed with Silph Co technology rather than new PDAs. He’s always buying their newest gadgets, even if he doesn’t have a proper use for them.

babies the hell out of his pokemon. helioptile is his little angel who can do no wrong and he’s always shielding it from dangerous situations (which becomes a bit of an issue as ghost fights increase in frequency.) With rotom, hes always double checking that its comfortable in his phone, if it wants to possess anything else, if he should upgrade its appliances, etc etc.

Jazz:

never went on a pokemon journey. She thought it was a waste of time since she didn’t want to become a trainer anyway. However, ghost hunting helps Jazz discover her own love of battling, so now she kinda regrets it.

eevee eventually evolves into sylveon. Its prehensile ribbons help Jazz multitask and its empathetic nature assists Jazz with psychology. Also it can scare away Vlad’s dragons lolol. Maybe it evolves in the middle of a fight against him?

if she gets any other teammates, it should reflect her desire to keep Danny safe. Maybe a honedge? usually Danny’s the one with a sword in fanon, but i think jazz deserves one too!!!

i think because. even the most powerful, threatening ones, like mr giant bee with drills hands and big fucking spider who eats your electricity and calls you a bitch... they’re often really weak nonethless they have TONS of weaknesses, even the tanks like golisopod have their drawbacks (again, emergency exit detested), so it makes sense considering that he’s this big loud guy, someone who’s feared even if his peeps are considered a joke, known to be violent and destructive, but at the same time he’s much more fragile than he’d like to admit

i think he sees, however, the exact opposite? exactly because of all their weaknesses and because they’re considered “starting area pokemon” bug types are often underappreciated, underused and most importantly understimated, and especially in the last few gens we got some bangers. he sees the underdogs, the ones rejected by society, and immediately gets attached to them

hey, can i ramble about how awesome pkmn black/white is? cool

specifically i wanna talk about the gym leaders, because they’re one of my favorite details in the games. for the first few generations, gym leaders were just a means to an end, people designed to fight you with specific types of pokemon. they existed entirely to be gym leaders and nothing else. yeah they had design quirks that gave them a vague sense of a life and personality besides gym leading, but they were never actually expanded upon. gens 1 and 4 were good examples of gym leaders with backstory. however, they just never. Did anything with them beyond gym leading, save for a couple short cutscene bits or literally having to track them down to fight them

now gen 5 REALLY amped up gym leaders and the elite four as well, and i love it. each of them is extremely involved in their jobs and hobbies outside of their gym leader status, and they’re reflected in their gym locations. i’m gonna bulletpoint this list of people because it’s an easy-to-digest format

1. Cilan, Chili, and Cress: Grass/Fire/Water leaders from Striaton City They’re restaurant owners and chefs! Their gym is literally within their restaurant, and their waiters challenge you along the way, so it’s dinner and a show! (also all of their names are based on herbs/spices)

2. Lenora: Normal leader from Nacrene City She’s an archaeologist and the curator of the city’s museum along with her husband Hawes. Yeah, this woman’s married! Don’t think that’s been an explicit thing before! She’s also super well-read, with a huge library in the back of the museum, and her gym is hidden underneath the shelves! That’s wild.

3. Burgh: Bug leader from Castelia City He’s an artist and possibly a fashion designer as well! His first gym was an art gallery with honey walls, but his updated gym from BW2 was filled with bug-spun silk and his final floor was flooded with rainbow paint. I don’t know if he’s actually into fashion as well, but I remember he was in a Nuzlocke comic I read, and I could see that fitting for him as well with all the silk.

4. Elesa: Electric leader from Nimbasa City She’s a flippin’ supermodel! Originally her gym was at the end of the rollercoaster ride in Nimbasa’s amusement park, but in BW2 it was changed to a runway with other models challenging you as you advance.

5. Clay: Ground leader from Driftveil City He’s the operator of a mining business! It’s interesting that mining is the main export of a port city, but hey, there’s two caves nearby and his gym is literally a massive crystal-filled mine. He’s super responsible with all that to take care of!

6. Skyla: Flying leader from Mistralton City She’s a cargo plane pilot! Her gym is beside an airport runway and within a mail carrier building. She even flies the player around to certain areas, so she’s still capable of piloting planes as well as battling trainers!

7. Brycen: Ice leader from Icirrus City It’s unclear what he does in BW (he’s like vaguely a ninja/monk?), but in BW2, turns out he’s an actor! You can’t battle him in BW2 but you can find him in PokeStar Studios in his own movies! Just looked it up - he had originally been an actor and then got himself hurt in a stunt gone wrong, so he retired and went to train himself to be more mindful and knowledgeable. Then he went back to acting later on. That’s some good backstory right there.

8. Drayden/Iris: Dragon leaders from Opelucid City I wasn’t actually sure what they did either, but Drayden is the mayor of Opelucid City and Iris is just a very excited Dragon-type trainer from the Village of Dragons. Drayden had to stay in Opelucid as its mayor, while Iris trained hard and became Champion once Alder retired. Both of them had very different goals in their strength!

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE

9. Cheren: Normal leader from Aspertia City After the events of BW, Cheren becomes a teacher at the Pokemon School in Aspertia, and continues battling as a way to teach the kiddies! It’s a really great position for him to have taken since it aligns with both of his passions: learning about and battling with Pokemon.

10. Roxie: Poison leader from Virbank City She’s the bass guitarist and singer of her very own rock band! Her gym is within a dark and graffitied music club, and her band plays their music on the stage!

11. Marlon: Water leader from Humilau City Honestly not sure what he does, he just seems like a surfer dude who really likes swimming and being in the water n stuff. Maybe he helps out with the Marine Tube? I dunno, that seems plausible.

BUT WAIT, THERE’S STILL THE ELITE FOUR

12. Shauntal: Ghost-type user She’s a novelist! She even has a pen and notebook in her hands as she battles you, and she shares little snippets from her stories every time you challenge her. That’s so cute!

13. Grimsley: Dark-type user He’s a gambler, and really good at it, too - very fitting for a Dark-type trainer. However, he’s got more backstory than I remembered (from Bulbapedia): “He is the son of a distinguished family that fell into ruin. As a result, he developed a gambling addiction.” He eventually went to Alola and got good at Mantine Surfing but that’s not as important. He’s still good at games.

14. Caitlyn: Psychic-type user She seems narcoleptic... Like, her room is literally a giant canopy bed and she’s basically in her pajamas when she fights you. She’s like if Musharna were in human form: constantly sleepy but fueled by their psychic power. Oh! She used to be an assistant in the Battle Frontier Castle in Sinnoh! Forgot about that important bit! And she apparently is actually psychic but is kinda like Mob from MP100 where it gets out of control if she gets too emotional. Neat!

15. Marshal: Fighting-type user He was an apprentice to Alder, and is a very disciplined fighter. His Elite Four room is a big boxing ring and he wears a mouth guard and wears an outfit reminiscent of a gi, so he seems like he could be a boxer or an MMA fighter.

hhhhhhh okay i’m done now

wait, not yet. the coolest thing about all of these guys is that pretty much all of them are involved in the story outside of gym stuff, they all know each other, and at the end of BW they come together to help apprehend Ghetsis

OH AND NOT TO MENTION in BW2 all of the gyms get their own custom remixes! those all further amplify the gym leaders’ aesthetics and sidenote i so wish that’d come back it was srsly super cool

what i’m trying to say is gen 5 was fantastic and did a lot for gym leaders that hasn’t been replicated since. even for alola, that’s kind of debatable; their backstories and trial placements were greatly expanded upon in the same way, but the level of overall involvement in the story was still greatly reduced
