so you're a fan of blue? name five shades and rank them with hex codes
Been sitting on this one for a while, but now's as good a time as any.
#00FFFF - Cyan. Eye-searingly bright and saturated, deliciously attention-grabbing in any dark background. I love that while technically it contains just as much green as it does blue, everybody knows that it's a blue and not a green. An incredible color, and my personal favorite. (Someone once ID'd me from a screenshot in part based on the fact that my username was in this color, which I find absurdly delightful)
#0000FF - Blue. Ole reliable. El classico. Crisp, distinct, regal; a staple, a pillar. RGB saves the best for last.
#73D7FF - Sky Blue. Lighter, softer, and a bit warmer than cyan, this is a staple when composing looks made of lots of different blues. I love a lot of different colors of the sky, so the hex code here is vaguely indicating a region rather than making a strong stance about which is the skyblue.
#007FFF - Azure. Halfway between Cyan and Blue. The name comes from Lapis Lazuli, the mineral used in the first blue dyes, and the word's incredible mouthfeel compliments the color well. It's good stuff!
#0006B1 - Deep Blue. As you might have noticed from the list above, I'm a girl who likes her colors saturated, and so the only color on my ranking that isn't the full FF of blue is gonna be coming in last. Still, I can't deny the subtle strength of the darker blues, the quiet certainty of the ocean hues, and I find them extremely effective when used strategically with their brighter blue brethren.

✨️, 🐰, 🧡 , 🐸!
I’m so sorry, I thought I responded to this earlier but apparently Tumblr deleted my draft and never posted it—I promise I haven’t been ignoring you!
Let’s try this again—responding to your ask game questions, Take 2:
✨ Do you have any nicknames?
Not a ton—“Maya” is a hard name to shorten or nickname. (And yes, I’ve heard “Maya-Papaya” approximately ten million times.) My family has many nicknames for me, though—I won’t share all of them here because they’re personal, but one that I like is “Princess Moonbeam,” which my mom usually calls me when she’s telling or texting me good night in the late, late hours when I typically tend to stay up.
I’ve also been called “Maya the Water-Chugger” by my friends (that one should be pretty self-explanatory—hydrate or diedrate!), “Machine-Gun Maya” by a middle school teacher (because I type so fast it sounds like a machine gun firing), and “Carl Sagan Jr.” by a DIFFERENT middle school teacher (that one should also be pretty self-explanatory—I was a little astronomy nerd.)
🐰 What do you think says the most about a person?
My very generalized answer is: how they treat others—if they show them respect or understanding, or not.
🧡 A color you can’t stand?
I tend to like most colors, but really bright, saturated ones like magenta (hex code #FF00FF), bright green (#00FF00), or bright blue (#0000FF) tend to hurt my eyes and I don’t really like their use in digital art. My favorite colors are anything in the purple-pink-red range, so I like magenta in theory—just maybe a slightly less eye-searingly bright shade of it, please?
🐸 Describe your aesthetic.
Do…do I even have one? My fashion sense is basically “the first T-shirt and leggings I pull from my closet every day” (usually with a desultory attempt at color-coordination, and maybe matching earrings if I have the time and motivation). And what T-shirts and leggings I own are dictated less by a sense of personal style than by what A) doesn’t cost a ton, B) is comfortable (I’ve worn the same bunch of leggings since 9th grade because they’re some of the only pants whose texture doesn’t bother me), and C) has things I like on it.
I guess in terms of personal style/aesthetic, I like colorful things more than…not-colorful things? Instead of muted or monochrome palettes, I like bright colors (as long as they’re not TOO eye-searingly bright, as mentioned above), especially anything in the pink-purple-red range. A lot of things, although not all, in my dorm room fit this color palette.
But honestly, if my clothing or decor has Spike Spiegel on it, then I’m happy.

SDJGSSGHUTD SO LIKE NEARLY A YEAR AGO YOU SENT IN AN ASK TO ANOTHER BLOG (i remember seeing the post at the time but i misattributed the ask to an anon. but im also 90% sure it was how i found your blog cause your leprechaun romance post is right after it in my drafts)
about how equius has really bright blood compared to other trolls and might be a mutant and they kind of shut it down like "erm actually hes just mutantly strong (they call him abnormally strong in comic, the word mutant isnt used for him like it is for others like sollux. also not the question) and the hiveswap characters all have the same colour (hiveswap isnt canon)" but you were so so real for that BECAUSE LIKE
ive practically got a thesis on this. equius has the brightest blood for a troll sans karkat (though still isnt as bright as a true #0000ff would be. but like its indistinguishable from egberts text blue its that bright) and the darkest text colour/ largest difference between text colours second only to feferi whos text is darker but to a far less drastic degree and gamzee whos text is actually lighter, probably tying in to his uncaring attitude towards the cast system.
and like. part of me is willing to accept the fact that its just because his sprite was made first w/o thinking and the text colour thing had to be changed last second + a too dark blue against a black background would be hard to read but like. then youve got equius' dynamic with aradia and her rust blood status and his feelings of inferiority and then later on theres (red!) arquius
and so like.... blueberry blood equius as a mutant rust blood in the same way karkats a candy(/cherry) red blood as a mutant lime blood
(and you might point out that lime isnt equidistant (ha equi-) from rust like indigo is so karkat be an olive for that to work, to which i point you to the fact that as far as homestuck colour theory is concerned all shades of green are the same. its why JADE harley has TRUE GREEN text/eyes and JADE blood is BLUE GREEN and calliope is a called LIME blood and her blood is TRUE GREEN but TROLL LIME bloods are YELLOW GREEN and TRUE GREEN is olive)
(olive which in nepetas case is substantially darker than most other trolls, again, probably for readability compared to jades and limes and what was at the time jadesprites, later jakes, colour but also like. the meowrails. the symbolisms. the contrast. you get it)
all shades of green are functionally the same (same with purples+pinks and also blues but the blues are weirder cause all the blues still have their own unique symbolisms and dynamics in colour theory while being intrinsically connected and also blue girls. yknow. i digress.)
anyways my point is they hated you because you spoke the truth and your the only one whos been right about homestuck ever
thank you I’m flattered
You’ve really thought about this a lot
What are you thoughts on guardian emulation theory as an alternative to inversion theory?
Or troll mother grub vestigial parisitoidism theory as an explanation for troll biology?

Playing with Power
A different approach to rebuild Afghanistan
Dessau Institute of Architecture Masters Programme
Studio Peter Ruge - #0000FF- Too Little, Too Much
Angela Maratea - Playing With Power
After a long evaluation and taking into account several factors, the project will revitalise the rural area of Ghani Khail, making it more liveable with the aim of attracting more local people and families to the village. Nowadays the village has few houses and a lot of free lands, and the few habitations that are located there, are run down, without electricity and heating. The design will aim to increase the density of the area, designing new sustainable houses, with electricity and heating service, but always taking into account the Afghan culture; obviously, as the Wardak and Chak Dam is situated in the area, the agriculture will remain the main job of the residents. However, the main goal of my thesis is trying to find a solution to drought and ensure that the inhabitants have safe water and acceptable sanitation.
In order to do so, the village will have a school for girls, with a department that will function as a safe house for women as well, and this building will also be a rainwater harvesting cam- pus that will provide drinking water for the entire village. Rainwater harvesting is the oldest and most sustainable way of collecting, storing, and purifying rainwater for drinking. It contributes significantly to green living and addresses human water demands during droughts and it has the potential to be a major source of water for drinking, bathing, and cooking in areas like Ghani Khail. The rainwater collected will be treated before use, especially if it is intended for drinking. Moreover, the expense of installing and maintaining a rainwater harvest- ing system is both effective and cost-efficient.
Finally, what I hope to accomplish with this project is to attract more local people to the village, including girls for studies, women for protection, and families for a better quality of life without having to leave their homes and jobs, while also hoping that this project will be valued and considered for future projects in other rural areas with similar climate and economic conditions.

Have figured romantic and familial relationships ala the quadrant system from homestuck including my take on leprechaun romance. I spent entirely too long on these but please tell me what y'all think! Info is also below the cut for screen readers. Please credit if you use any of the ones I made…
An important note: Any of the romantic ones can involve intimacy/sex or not it depends on the relationship in question. Regarding both soulmate and foundmate relationships if it is an adult and a child the bond is always a familial one. Any of the relationships can be monogamous or polyamorous. Many bonds also may start as found but turn into soul over time via white/prism or red/heart. There are also many that have both involved (such as Ben Solo and Rey from the Star Wars sequel series being both “love/affection”/matesprits (soulmates) and “we can be great together”/ambitners (foundmates).
Each bond has a hue/flavor adjective, a hex code for the color and meanings listed.
Any of the bonds can include/start as platonic feelings/friendship because friendship is just that versatile. Technically any of the romance can be found or oul mate thee are jut general rules. However, familial relationships are separate from the romantic ones. (mint and star don't mix because one is familial and one is romantic, etc)
~
Romantic Soulmates (instant connection)
Matespritship (mate + esprit)/Heart: red (#FF0000) can be either soul (instant connection) or found (bond formed over time). Is flush and symbolizes “love/affection” and pertains to romance, though it shares territory with sellove due to being a symbol of love/affection in general no matter the type of bond.
Moirallegiance (Moira/fated + allegiance)/Diamond: pink (#FFC0CB) Is pale and can be seen even among family members because there is white/prism in it. It means “to have a best friend”.
Rhympatible (rhyme + compatible)/Balloon: fuchsia (#FF00FF) It is smooth and the meaning is “like attracts like”.
Starverence (star + reverence)/Star: orange (FFA500) Is bright and means a “celebrity or heroic crush turned to love”, or “pure admiration”.
Repotract (repair + contract)/Moon: yellow (#FFFF00) is dappled, like moonlight reflected in clear water. It means “mentor and student” and a good example of this would be Aang and Katara from Avatar: the Last Airbender especially in season 2.
Pursuitance (pursuit + romance)/Pot of Gold: gold (#FFD700) is shiny and symbolizes the “thrill of the chase”.
Appreagnetism (appreciate + magnetism)/Clover: green (#3CB043) is lush and symbolizes “a breath of fresh air”.
Shelender (shelter + tender)/Rainbow: blue (#0000FF) is cozy and means “nurturer and nurtured”. It also tends to be very cuddly.
Gambolship (gambol + relationship)/Horseshoe: purple (#A020F0) is cheeky and means “partner in mischief”. Sirius Black and James Potter would be a good example of this, even if they don’t end up together romantically.
Kismesissitude (kismet/fated + nemesis)/Fleur De Lis: black (#000000) is pitch and means “to have a number one rival”. The spades seen in homestuck canon are…not healthy. I chose the fleur de lis because it symbolizes french royalty and a proper rival makes you want to be the best version of yourself. (The spade from homestuck I thought about for a long time and figured that it symbolizes the toxic relationships like Gamzee/Terezi or Spades Slick/Black Queen. Aka plenty on Alternia but it’s not how proper kismesissitudes are supposed to be. An example of a good nonintimate/no sex involved kismesissitude is Goku/Vegeta from Dragonball Z. One that could involve intimacy/sex should they get together would be Seto Kaiba/Yami Yuugi if the latter had his own body.)
Auspisticism (auspicious + allegiance)/Club: gray (#808080) is ashen and means “keeps the peace”. Usually at least 3 or more involved in some way, so a lot of OT3s fit into this I’d think.
Diametrothal (diamond + betrothal)/Spiral: silver (#C0C0C0) is curly and means “opposites attract”.
Romantic Foundmates (bond formed over time)
Ambitnership (ambitious + partner)/Infinity: crimson (#DC143C) is ruddy and means “we can be great together”. Another example of this pair aside from Reylo is Sephiroth and Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy 7.
Belovant (beloved + confidant)/Circle: carmine (#960018) is elite and means “in my inner circle”. This one makes me think of the Inquisitor with their romantic interest at the end of Dragon Age: Inquisition, as well as any video game protagonist with their main love interest.
Fitteure (fitted +treasure)/Music Note: ginger (#BE5504) is lyrical and means “ lets make music together”.
Shomradeship (sharing + comrade)/Flag: bronze (#CD7F32) is solid and means “under the same flag”. The Summoner and Marquise Spinneret Mindfang are like this.
Miavity (mixed + gravity)/Looped Arrow: dijon (#C49102) is heady and means “we circle each other”.
Esseond (essential + bond)/Upside Down Triangle: goldenrod (#DAA520) is classy and means “vital member of the team”.
Enlightace (enlightening + embrace)/Lightbulb: tuscany (#FCD12A) is sheer and means “you inspire me”. Naruto Uzumaki and Hinata Hyuuga from Naruto are a good example of this type.
Aortimith (aortic + locksmith)/Key: asparagus (#7BA05B) is firm and means “you have the key to my heart”.
Invignon (invigorating + companion)/Paw Print: juniper (#3A5311) is wild and means “you bring out the animal in me”.
Dialorum (dialogue + forum)/Speech Bubble: dark green (#466D1D) is gabby and means “we can talk for hours”.
Pamurse (pamper + nurse)/Medical Cross: basil (#32612D) is gratis and means “I’ll take care of you”.
Genespoil (generous + spoil)/Gift: mantis (#74C365) is lavish and means “I want to spoil you”.
Uplifer (uplifting + rescuer)/Flotation Ring: aqua (#08787F) is stalwart and means “I’ll always rescue you”.
Speciour (specific + amour/love)/Magnifying Glass: sea (#3C9992) is plucky and means “we can always find each other”. Ruby and Sapphire from Steven Universe have this type of bond.
Heroier (heroic + musketeer)/Quatrefoil: prussian (#003153) is hardy. It means “all for one and one for all”.
Sincerort (sincere + comfort)/Tear Drop: yale (#0E4D92) is mushy and represents “you can cry on my shoulder”.
Protelief (protective + relief)/Umbrella: cobalt (#0020C2) is stout and means “get under my umbrella”.
Nomadus (nomadic + locus)/Arrow: egyptian (#1034A6) is astute and symbolizes “looking towards the same direction”.
Stronst (strong + boost)/Dumbbell: eminence (#613385) is hale and means “bringing out each others’ strength”.
Chivard (chivalric + guard)/Shield: mauve (#D7A1F9) is adamant and means “I will protect you”.
Excitark (exciting + spark)/Lightning Bolt: jam (#A50B5E) is electric and means ‘you have my attention".
Twiame (twin + flame)/Flame: eggplant (#311465) is sassy and symbolizes “you light a fire in me”.
Compatony (compatible + symphony)/Heart Monitor Line: wine (#722F37) is rhythmic and means “we’re on the same wavelength”.
Cheresire (cherished + desire)/Target: maroon (#800000) has a sharp hue/flavor and means “you’re on my radar”. It can also be represented by the eyes emoji (👀).
Familial Soulmates (instant connection)
Deromise (depths + promise)/Hands Shaking: scarlet (#FF2400) is thick and symbolizes “the blood of the covenant”.
Enerfaction (energizing + satisfaction)/Whoosh: sunshade (#FFAD33) is swift and means “cool breeze in the summer”.
Thundise (thundering + surprise)/Sideways Lightning Bolt: lemon (#FAFA33) is shocking and means “shock to the system”.
Melequality (mellow + equality)/Rocking Chair: pear (#D1E231) is mellow and it means “you help me relax”.
Strision (striking + expression)/Harlequin (#3FFF00) is vivid and means “lets make a mark”.
Swiftation (swift + collaboration)/Trophy: malachite (#0BDA51) is nimble and means “teamwork makes the dream work”.
Thrillpade (thrilling + escapade)/Pair of Dice: cyan (#00FFFF) is flashy and means “you challenge me”.
Pricynergy (priceless + synergy)/Oyster with Pearl: cerulean (#2A52BE) is precious and means “little things matter”.
Wonderisity (wonder + diversity)/Four Pointed Star: cornflower (#6593F5) is quirky and means “understanding differences”.
Stantment (standards + commitment)/Prize Ribbon: wisteria (#BDB5D5) is robust and means “defining my expectations”.
Intuiding (intuitive + understanding)/Telescope: orchid (#DA70D6) is nifty and means “you get me”. I maintain the theory that Hans and Anna from Frozen were actually this and not romantically inclined and were instead trying to conform to heteronormative expectations.
Ascendity (ascending + nobility)/Crown: cerise (#DE3163) is silky and symbolizes “you make me feel like royalty”.
Familial Foundmates (bond formed over time)
Merndred (merrymaking + kindred)/Theater Comedy Mask: bubblegum (#FFC1CC) is fresh and symbolizes “it’s always fun when I’m with you”. King Bumi and Avatar Aang are a good representation of this bond.
Simnection (similar + connection)/Peach: deep peach (#FFCBA4) is ripe and represents “two of a kind”. Despite being depicted as reincarnations of one another, I think that Princess Serenity and Usagi Tsukino as well as Prince Endymion and Mamoru Chiba are examples of this type of bond. It’s very specific and thus not very common.
Idylarmth (idyllic + warmth)/Daisy: daisy (#F8DC75) is pastoral and symbolizes “a ray of sunshine”.
Imprelight (impressive + delight)/Honeycomb: honeydew (#DBDDBD) is sweet and represents “you blow me away”.
Stylisel (stylish + parallel)/Candy: mint (#3EB489) is chill and personifies “cool and refreshing”. This style of relationship makes me think of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan from the Twilight franchise-if yknow it wasn’t a toxic dumpster fire. I also believe that a lot of familial relationships are mistaken to be romantic or vice versa the other way around due to issues with any number of those involved.
Thriream (thrifty + dream)/Spiral Shell: seafoam (#3DED97) is billowy and symbolizes “want to be part of your world”.
Elegaty (elegant + tranquility)/Lotus: lilac (#C8A2C8) is ethereal and symbolizes “tranquil and free”.
Spontanial (spontaneous + special)/Snowflake: periwinkle (#CCCCFF) is graceful and represents “pristine and clear”.
Growflection (growing + reflection)/Stalks of Wheat: wheat (#F5DEB3) is keen and symbolizes “we flourish more when we’re together”.
Enthusivel (enthusiastic + marvel)/Sand Castle: sand (#C2B280) is bouncy and represents “you make me feel so alive”.
Playment (playful + agreement)/Pair of Marbles: cloud (#C5C6D0) is jolly and means “forever a good time”.
Healthern (healthy + pattern)/Dew On a Leaf: mist (#C9D3D7) is crisp and symbolizes “the brightness of morning”.
Other Bonds
Sellove (selfless + love)/Prism: white (contains all colors) (#FFFFFF) can be either soul (instant connection) or found (bond formed over time). is referred to as serene flavor or hue. Aka a bond beyond description. The Signless and the Disciple would fit into this category.
Any Other Notes
I still have a lot of examples missing from the types of relationships, so any input would be appreciated!

Heard you take prayer requests. This may be silly but there's a flash drive I had in middle school that I lost and I'm still very sad about it because I had a lot of self-written songs on there. I have a feelings the drive is somewhere in a landfill since it's been years but if there was anything I could do to have it back in my possession I would do it. It was blue like 0000FF. I forgot the brand. I was wondering if you'd be willing to pray for it to find its way back to me. Thanks if you do <3
Oh this is perhaps the most interesting prayer request I have ever gotten. Yes of course I will pray that you find your flashdrive someday💙

ooh, what this? don’t know if it’s last played/watched or the last NEW thing played/watched….. i’ll go with the former.
last song: rite of passage, moulettes! i’ve listened to preternatural.. wayyy too many times lately. rite of passage isn’t my favourite song from the album, that would be parasite, but it’s definitely up there :)
favourite color: ah… bright blue, if it wasn’t extremely obvious. every app and site with customizability is exactly the hex code 0000ff. and i have an entire tag on my toyhouse for characters with that specific blue. minor obsession.
last movie/show: i’m not big on shows, but as it so happens the last one i watched was doctor who (thanks to one of my friends AND my mother relentlessly exposing it to me).
on my watchlist: a lot of things, good god, i really have no time to watch stuff. serial experiments lain is the only one i can remember right now, but my list is so incredibly long.
last game: rain world, unsurprisingly! i’m playing with a friend right now :) he’s surprisingly good at the game for only having played first yesterday. we’ve just about passed the wall right now, and we’ll be en route to moon after. kind of want to make him suffer through the leg/underhang and shaded.
last book: i haven’t actually… read any books, for quite a while. i mainly just don’t have the time! but the last book i read was the punch escrow, and it wasn’t half bad.
sweet/savoury/spicy: savoury!! all my favourite foods are savoury. sweet is a gamble most of the time.
last search: i’d first like to comment on bone cell cute. i’m going to google that after i see what my last search was. said search was “han tyumi”, since i was listening to king gizzard and the lizard wizard’s han-tyumi, the confused cyborg. i’ve been listening to a lot of their songs lately. (good news about “bone cell cute”, the plush of a bone cell from my favourite plush company shows up! i own a muscle cell from them.)
current obsession: not much of an obsession in the full meaning, but rain world has been my big thing for the time being. if it wasn’t very obvious. i love them slugs.
fic i’m currently reading: oh, this is a good one. i’m not exactly in the middle of reading any fic, but i am in the middle of writing one. i won’t disclose the fandom, but you can go find it if you’re curious. i’m an easy guy to spot!

Last song: Dentist! from the 1986 Little Shop of Horrors movie
Favorite color: Red :]
Last movie/show: If I recall correctly, Mao Mao: Heroes of Pure Heart! I've been listening to Channel Toon News on and off recently and half of every episode is dedicated to just going over and chatting about an animated movie or show. Mao Mao just happened to be one of them, and it was something I wanted to watch at some point, so....
Next on my watchlist: The Dungeon Meshi anime, but I'd like to read the manga first
Last game: Oh boy... I've been cycling through a couple of games everyday for a bit just to get the daily rewards, but the last I've played played would be A Little to the Left
Last book: Umm... I'm almost finished reading Calvin and Hobbes? I would like to read House of Leaves though, but for that I think I'd need my own copy
Sweet/savory/spicy: Savory
Relationship status: Taken by my beloved woowah 💖
Last thing I searched online: "defunctland tweet filmmaking"
Current obsession: Not big on anything at the moment, but I guess the biggest thing is Find Everything (findeverythinggame.com btw)
Greatest flaw: My massive ego, and this goddamn skin
Fic I’m currently reading: None

Discussion Masterpost - This is How You Lose the Time War
If anyone doesn’t like how I referred to them/quoted them, please let me know, and I’ll fix it immediately!
Summary: This is probably the most active discussion we’ve ever had! Isn’t that neat? Generally, people had one of two reactions to this book. Some people absolutely adored it, and it’s easy to see why. They mentioned the beautiful love story and emotional (not to mention gorgeous) letters as what made them enjoy the book so much. Others found it too difficult to grasp. This was mainly due to the unusual and lyrical prose, that left them feeling lost and confused.
Book Reviews:
Elfspectation’s review: “I wish it was a little… easier to read? Normally I love scifi but this was much more high concept than I’m accustomed to.”
My Review: “I could appreciate the crafting of the metaphors and images but was never really moved or touched by them. Red and Blue felt like mere ideas and not real people”
Rey’s Review: “I dived in, already bracing for the angst and the banters and the underlined fluff of course. And it did come, through letters, through gestures.”
Ann’s Review: “I love time travel stories, and this book did have an unique approach. Yet the universe remained very vague, and distant.”
Generalblizzarddreamer’s Review: “It reminded me of an elaborate chess game. Just the whole idea of these to groups of people going head to head and trying to trick the other person reminded of the strategy needed for winning a good game of chess.”
Melissa’s Review: “The concept is beautiful, I just wish more time and thought was dedicated into it because this feels like a middle school fantasy when it should be something way more complex than that.”
Megan’s Review: “I was also SUPER CONFUSED the whole time I was reading”
Questions and Asks:
Ann shared that the book might be turned into a TV series, and asked “Do you think it would translate well to the big screen?”
I answered: “I’m very sceptical. The best thing about the story is the letters, and I just can’t see how you would translate that into film.”
V answered: “If its animation I think there’ll be a lot of stuff to play around with..So if that really does happen..I am so up for it!”
Minerva asked Ann and me: “What did you think of the book, how could this book relate to other time travel books, in general if you could time travel to a part of your life; what could you change and why?”
Ann answered: “This book was very vague about actual time-travelling… rebraiding strands of time, going deep under cover in the time-line, there even seemed several timelines… It wasn’t very clear to me.”
I answered: “I think there’s so much to admire here: the creativity and uniqueness, the gorgeous writing, the letters. It’s such a beautiful book! But at the same time, it has some major flaws.”
Ann asked: “Sometimes Red and Blue would start their letters with little nicknames and play on words. [...] Did you have favourite ones?”
I answered: “There was one that I liked so much I made a note of: ‘0000FF’. It made me laugh :)”
Ann asked: “Which character intrigued you more? Blue or Red?”
I answered: “I think Red intrigued me more, just because her world seemed so alien.”
I asked: “How does This is How You Lose the Time War compare to other novels in the [sci-fi] genre?”
Generalblizzarddreamer answered: “It’s more lyrical than other sci-fi books and relies more on the character to tell the story rather than the plot that the others rely on.”
I asked: “What did you think about the allusion to Romeo and Juliet?”
Ann answered: “I didn’t think it really applied [...] the characters were rather world-weary, while the youthful romance of the play was the tragedy of it all.”
Elfspectations answered: “I was thinking that maybe the hint in that passage was that this book parallels a version of Romeo and Juliet in a Strand where it was written as a comedy.”
I asked: “Do you think that people can truly love each other through words alone?”
V answered: “I think it’s a very pure and intimate way to fall in love. You don’t know the external appearances so you fall in love with what they truly show you, their thoughts and the connection which grows slowly.”
V asked: “I am quite confused about the shadow that followed red..I didn't really understand who it was or what it was and its significance. What do you think it meant?”
I answered: “I think it was Red herself. [...] she went back in time and traced their steps, and this future Red was the shadow.”
I asked: “Do you wish the book had been longer? If so, what would you have liked to see more of?”
V answered: “I would’ve actually liked to read more about how did the war came into being..or what position were red and blue in and why they did what they did”
Ann asked: “I was sometimes reminded of The Starless Sea as I was reading last month’s pick. Did you have similar feelings?”
I answered: “Both books have what I think is called purple prose (?) where the writers use language that’s very poetic and metaphorical, but sometimes they go a little overboard.”
I asked: “How did you feel about the setting and plot being secondary to the character's love story?”
Generalblizzarddreamer answered: “I think I would have loved to see more of the love story but the plot and setting was fascinating to me :)”
Other Cool Stuff:
This interview with the authors of the novel, talking about their writing process and how they came to work together.
This fanfic that Amal El Mohtar personally recommended (thanks to Ann for sharing!).
A very cool artist, Laya, made wonderful artworks based on this book. My personal favorite is this one.
This cool journal spread by Emma, based off the book.

Books read in April
I probably spent more time reading but I also read a handful of novellas and a couple of children’s novels, which means I read more books than usual.
Many of these were, if not outright retellings, than heading close to that sort of territory: faeries and fairytales, Sherlock Holmes, Jane Austen, and Norse gods...
Favourite cover: Masque, maybe.
Reread: Nothing, too busy reading new things...
Still reading: Cinder by Marissa Meyer.
Next up: There’s a new Murderbot novel out in early May!!!
(Longer reviews and ratings are on LibraryThing and Dreamwidth.)
*
The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul by Douglas Adams (narrated by the author): Adams’ descriptions are clever and unexpected, and he strings together a series of events even more bizarre and unexpected than his descriptions. Sometimes I felt exhausted on behalf of his poor protagonists, bounced from one mishap to another, but I was impressed by Adams’ ability to turn this madness into such a coherent story.
Flamebringer by Elle Katharine White: A solid, tense conclusion to Heartstone and Dragonshadow. However, I suspect it would have made more of an impact had I read the first two books recently. It assumes that the reader remembers more worldbuilding details -- about history and family connections and magical folk -- than I did. And because I found such details confusing, I didn’t pay close attention to some of the history and politics revealed in this book, and those things turned out to be unexpectedly important. A trilogy in much need of a glossary.
Hamster Princess: Harriet the Invincible by Ursula Vernon (aka T. Kingfisher): A very amusing take on ‘Sleeping Beauty’. Upon learning of her curse, Harriet accurately concludes that she must be invincible until it strikes -- and when the time arrives, she’s determined to avoid falling into an enchanted sleep. This is heavily-illustrated. The pictures are great, but were often awkwardly displayed in the Libby e-book.
The Art of Theft by Sherry Thomas: More of a heist story than a murder mystery, which may explain why I found it less compelling than The Hollow of Fear, although admittedly, it has its suspenseful sequences. Thomas does some interesting things in expanding her portrayal of the era as well as Mrs Watson’s story, taking Charlotte Holmes and her trusted associates to France on a mission along with someone from Mrs Watson’s past. I liked that Livia gets to play a more active role in those adventures. But I expected to like this more.
Love Lettering by Kate Clayborn: Meg is desperate for inspiration and company. She comes up with a project, looking for hand-lettered signs around New York, and invites along a former client -- who has turned up to question Meg about the hidden message in the wedding program she designed for him and his ex. A story about signs, secrets and the importance of having difficult conversations. I liked how those themes are explored in different areas of Meg’s life: making an effort to get to know Reid, setting boundaries with a new client, and trying to stop her best friend from drifting away.
Once Upon a Marigold by Jean Ferris (narrated by Carrington MacDuffie): Christian was brought up in a cave by Edric the troll, who discovered Chris hiding in the forest. Now Chris is in love with the princess Marigold, with whom he has exchanged letters carried by pigeon but has never met. If I had discovered this in 2002 when it was first published, I suspect I’d have been delighted by its gentle, whimsical, almost-fairytale-ness. These days I tend to want more complexity and more emotion and, often, more critical engagement with the genre’s tropes. But this was still pleasant company while I did a few hours of housework.
The Shards of a Broken Sword novella trilogy by W.R. Gingell:
Twelve Days of Faery: King Markon’s son appears to be afflicted by a strange curse, because accidents and misadventure befalls any girl the prince flirts with. When an enchantress offers to deal with the curse in exchange for the expected reward of the prince’s hand in marriage, Markon gets swept up in her investigation. This is so much fun. I liked the way it focuses on a middle-aged father, rather than any of the more usual candidates for this sort of story, like his son or any of the young women affected by the curse. And I enjoyed Althea’s confidence and practical competence.
Fire in the Blood: Another story interested in twisting fairytale tropes. A prince sets out to rescue a princess from a tower, but neither of them are the protagonist -- that’s Rafiq, the prince’s enslaved dragon, forced into human-form. Rafiq has been dragged along on this quest and quietly hopes that his vicious master will fail to unravel the tower keep’s protections. I enjoyed this. The tower keep, with its magical puzzles, was an intriguing setting, and it was rather satisfying to see Rafiq and the princess’s serving girl subtly undermine the prince’s efforts without drawing his ire.
The First Chill of Autumn: The first two standalone and take place over a few days. This does not. It begins with Princess Dion’s childhood. At seventeen, Dion is sent on a tour of her country and discovers the truth about the Fae’s influence. She ends up joining forces with characters from the previous books. I liked each of these sections. However, this could easily have been expanded into something novel-length and been stronger for it. If more time had been given to Dion’s relationships -- with her sister, Barric and Padraig, and maybe her parents -- the ending would have made more of an emotional impact.
“A Tale of Carmine and Fancy”: This short story takes place during The First Chill of Autumn. I didn’t care about Carmine one way or another when he turned up in the trilogy, so I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this.
A Posse of Princesses by Sherwood Smith (narrated by Emma Galvin): Sixteen year old Rhis is one of many princesses invited to attend festivities held in honour of a crown prince. My first impression -- a nice-but-unremarkable story with an irritating audiobook narrator -- quickly changed. I got used to the narrator’s voice. I really appreciate Smith’s portrayal of social interactions and of group dynamics from the perspective of someone who is trying to understand why others are competing for attention. And once the plot took off, I was hooked. I have mixed feelings about the very end but that didn’t change how much I liked the rest of the story.
The Two Monarchies sequence by W.R. Gingell:
Clockwork Magician: Several years after Blackfoot, Peter starts at university. Because Peter ends up messing around with time-travel, there are scenes from his future in the previous books. It’s interesting getting those moments from Peter’s perspective and fitting the puzzle pieces of his story together. I also felt invested in Peter’s journey even though he spends a lot of time being arrogant and oblivious, because I knew that there must be a significant change up ahead. The way his dawning realisation is handled was unexpectedly satisfying. I also enjoyed seeing more of Poly and Luck, and getting to know Glenna.
Masque: A murder mystery which turns into a Beauty and the Beast retelling. Lady Isabella Farrah is determined to investigate after a friend is killed at the Ambassador’s Grand Ball, even if doing so annoys the official investigator, the masked Lord Pecus. Isabella is excellent company. She’s quick-witted, resourceful and uncowed. I really enjoyed watching her banter and meddle. The Beauty and the Beast elements are cleverly woven into the story, and even without the murder investigation, there’s enough to make it a unique take on an old tale. A delightful standalone companion to this series.
Frankly in Love by David Yoon: Frank Li has watched his parents react to his older sister’s choices and he knows they will never accept him dating anyone who isn’t Korean. So he and a family friend, Joy Song, pretend to date. Fake-dating is one of my most favourite romance tropes but I’m not a fan when it’s a cover for actually dating someone else -- I don’t like others getting hurt by the deception. Despite that, I found this YA novel engaging and unexpectedly moving. And an absolutely fascinating look at being the child of immigrants.
The Night Country by Melissa Albert: The Hazel Wood was excellent, sharp and compelling, but I didn’t enjoy the sequel much at all. In the first book there’s a much stronger thread of hope running through the darkness.
This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone: The letters exchanged between Red and Blue, two agents on opposing sides of a time war, are vibrant and memorable, playful and poignant. I particularly enjoyed their different names for each other. (“Dearest Blue-da-ba-dee”, “My Dear Mood Indigo”, “Dearest 0000FF” -- that one made me laugh, “Dear Red Sky at Morning”...) The scenes in between leave many questions unanswered about the war being fought. I couldn’t shake the uncomfortable feeling that if I actually understood what was going on, I wouldn’t like the characters. Nevertheless the letters are brilliant, and I can deal with uncertainty for the space of a novella.
A Dead Djinn in Cairo by P. Djèlí Clark (narrated by Suehyla El-Attar): This novelette is too brief to involve what I enjoy most about murder mysteries, like carefully prying into people’s motives or characters forming supportive relationships in the face of an atmosphere of suspicion and unease. It is possible I’d like this worldbuilding in a different story, and that I would care more about Special Investigator Fatma el-Sha'arawi if I spent more time with her.
The Jane Austen Project by Kathleen A. Flynn: Rachel and Liam, a doctor and an actor-turned-academic, are sent back to 1815 to befriend Jane Austen and uncover an unpublished novel. Time travel allows for portraying Austen’s world with historical accuracy from the perspective of a woman with contemporary attitudes, and creates interesting challenges and anxieties. There’s a high degree of wish fulfilment in meeting Austen, but also realistic complications and consequences. This book impressed me even though -- or perhaps because -- it wasn’t always comfortable or to my taste. I’d have adored it, had things been slightly different, yet it’s nevertheless gripping and thought-provoking storytelling. I respect that.

About Viri
If you have no idea what I’m talking about: Viri is an OC I’ve drawn once. He is Winter’s best friend, and he is Clematis’ roommate (they go to the same college). He works at the souvenir shop on the Tour Floor of the lab a majority of my OCs work at. Viri uses he/him pronouns.
More information is under the cut!
He’s going through college so he can start a business, and has taken many majors to do this. He used to work at a coffee shop, but when Winter mentioned that there was a position open at the lab Winter worked at, he really couldn’t refuse (more time to spend with friend). It’s an easy job, to him, since he only needs to interact with kids, teachers, co-workers, the occasional scientist from the lower levels, and one really stubborn HEXbot. The occasional scientist is often Dr. Vinstock, since they’re the only one who can get the HEXbot downstairs.
The very stubborn HEXbot is 0000ff, who somehow manages to run up the stairs faster than the scientists can use the elevator. 0000ff often “annoys” Viri by messing with the merchandise, taking apart the vending machines, etc.. 0000ff ends up putting the machines back together (”reluctantly”), so it doesn’t really annoy Viri that much. Dr. Vinstock doesn’t really annoy him, either, since all they really do is scold 0000ff and buy a stuffed animal.
I mentioned in his first post that he has a tendency to fall asleep by accident, no matter what. He also sleep walks, but only sometimes. Most of the time, a scientist on the Tour Floor walks him to the break room before he can get into anything dangerous (the Tour Floor is actually three floors: Main Floor, Crash Testing, and the Edibles Department). He’s often stopped on the Main Floor, but he has walked into Edibles once (Meri’s S/O stopped him before he could walk into a flying soda can).
He likes sewing, and plans to open a business that makes clothes. He is currently doing things locally, since it’s easier for him. A majority of his clothes are either altered or made by him in some form, so he has a lot of experience, but he still ends up pricking himself by accident.
During the lab accident, he was trying to reason with the door robot (affectionately called “Hooty” by everyone in the lab) to open up so they could get their coffee. Clematis was delivering coffee that day, so he was also trying to reason with Hooty to open up so people could get their coffee. At the time Hooty was infected (it went unnoticed, since Hooty has no HEX lights), so the virus just trapped people in the facility. Meri later commented on how there were “literally no other exits from the facility other than the fire exits”, and that should have been a safety hazard.
