Complete Stephanie Brown Timeline & Reading Order

(*for the Post-Crisis/pre-Flashpoint era)

Steph spent over a decade as a supporting character, which means until she finally got her Batgirl run, her appearances are scattered across various bat-books, and hard to track (let alone order) if you don't know where to start. Which is what I’m here for!

This will run through a basic explanation of Steph's entire timeline up to Flashpoint, including every appearance in chronological order. (Well, minus some pointless cameos where she appears for a single panel/line.) If you're just reading for Steph, there are many issues listed where you could just skim through the non-Steph portions.

For the very abbreviated version:

Steph first appears in Detective Comics vol 1 #647-649 as the Spoiler, working against her dad.

She returns and becomes a regular supporting character in Robin vol 2 (1993), which includes getting together with Tim, and going through a teen pregnancy.

Steph starts to appear more across other Batfamily books, particularly Batgirl vol 1 (2000) (while still being a regular in Robin).

For a short time, she is welcomed into the inner circle and trained directly by Batman, before being rejected again.

After Tim is forced to quit, Steph becomes Robin briefly.

Shortly after being fired, she is killed.

Steph returns with a very brief explanation, and floats around as a Robin supporting character again.

Finally, she becomes Batgirl and gets her own run in Batgirl vol 3 (2009), which lasts until the reboot.

Full timeline and issue listings below the cut! I’ve tried to make it possible to just grab the listed issues, ignore any (lower-case s) spoilers, and get a fresh read for yourself OR to read in full for a thorough timeline.

Early Days

Detective Comics vol 1 #647-649 (in 1992) - ft Batman, Robin

(Batman: Knightfall begins here; irrelevant if you’re just reading for Steph. Tim starts dating Ariana Dzerchenko.)

Robin vol 2 #3-5, #15-16

Stephanie is introduced wanting to stop her father, and teaming up with Batman and Robin to that end. The next two stories are also Cluemaster-centric, with Steph and Tim working together again (sans Bruce). These stories are spaced out by irl years.

Batman and Robin figure out Stephanie's identity right away, but she remains unaware of theirs. Bruce is against Spoiler, considering her lack of training to be a hazard, and perhaps remaining wary of her morals after Stephanie nearly kills her dad in her first appearance. He wants to keep her safe, but it mostly manifests in criticisms. Tim is more conflicted, backing Bruce up, but also thinking he's too harsh.

(Note: Steph’s mom is called “Agnes Bellinger“ in her first appearance, but will later be renamed Crystal Brown.)

Steph takes a regular role in Robin, and almost all issues here include Tim. Stephanie started as a cynic, only motivated by stopping her father and perfectly happy to leave her enemies to die, but develops here. She finds a passion for helping people, and embraces mercy. R#45 includes a brief mention of her considering quitting the Spoiler thing, but that isn’t followed up on, and she remains active as a newbie vigilante.

In this era, Steph also gets her first stories with neither Bruce nor Tim present in Showcase and Huntress/Spoiler (which also introduces her temporary boyfriend Dean), her first narration in R#40, and meets others in the hero community. Steph is affected by the Gotham-wide earthquake, which also indirectly gets her dad out of prison, but not strongly tied to the plotline.

Now that Bruce is rarely around when he sees Steph, Tim typically makes cursory complaints that it's too dangerous for Steph to be Spoiler--and then works with her and relies on her and enjoys her company nonetheless.

Also prominent in this era is Steph's crush on Tim, despite him having a girlfriend. Ngl, the 90s values and drawn out love triangle can be rough to get through. Steph keeps making moves even when Tim is uninterested. Tim sends mixed signals here too, only wanting to be with Ariana one minute, and then saying he's also attracted to Steph the next.

Secret Origins 80-Page Giant, fifth story - backstory

Tim and Steph finally start to date in R#56, and Tim breaks up with Ari. Tim thinks it's unfair to date at first because he can't tell Stephanie his identity per Batman's rules, but Steph insists she's okay with it. This won't become an issue in their relationship until later; for the moment, they are happy and tackling the problem together.

Just a week after getting together, Steph realizes she's pregnant with Dean's baby. Over the next issues, she decides on adoption, hangs up the Spoiler costume while pregnant, and starts home-schooling. Tim uses the Alvin Draper alias to take her to Lamaze class and meet her mom, who appears regularly here. Originally a neglectful addict, Crystal is now sober and much more present for her daughter.

Chuck Dixon's conservative, anti-choice politics are blatant in this arc: abortion is eeeevil, some silly teenagers think being pregnant is cool, and a baby needs a mom and a dad.

A minor wrench is thrown in Steph and Tim’s relationship when Jack Drake moves the family to Keystone City in R#62, but Tim returns for Steph’s birth anyway, and convinces his dad to move home shortly after.

Batman Chronicles #22, second story - ft a creepy Uncle Dave

Steph’s mom finds out about Spoiler. Although she’s not mad--even delighted at the idea of Steph sticking it to her father--she is insistent that it’s too dangerous and tries to forbid Steph from taking up again. Obviously this does not work; Steph just hides it from her.

Though a major plot for the rest of the Bats (including in Tim’s plots in these same issues), No Man's Land is really just a side note for Steph.

After NML, Steph and Tim happily reunite, but Tim is having problems he can’t or won’t talk about in his Tim Drake life. Steph not knowing his identity really starts to be an issue here, both because of his secrecy and her insecurity.

In other news, Steph is instantly starstruck by her first meeting with Black Canary--whose identity is not secret--and she tries to angle for a partnership. She also first hears about Oracle. Her introduction to Secret is a lot less pleasant, by which I mean Secret attacks her. Whoops.

In the final arc in this era, Tim’s two lives have gotten too close, Steph has gotten wildly jealous, and she’s determined to discover his identity. Also, she tells her mom here that the boy she’s dating is Robin-yes-that-Robin.

Batman takes Spoiler to the cave for the first time, and reveals Tim’s identity to her--behind his back, which Tim is very upset about. Since Tim is mad at him, Bruce decides to latch onto the new kid and starts training Steph. He is nice to Steph for once in this era, and it's the closest she's been to the inner circle yet. Batman takes her training seriously and genuinely talks to her.

Here she meets Cassandra and Alfred. Neither is particularly warm at first, but Cass asks for Steph’s help to read a note in Batgirl, and the seeds of their friendship are planted in the ensuing team-up.

Almost all appearances here include Bruce, but Steph interacts with Tim less. They reconcile in that last arc, but despite being theoretically on good terms again, still don’t talk much.

The last arc also sees Steph’s dad return to their house, whether Steph and her mom like it or not. (Hint: they don’t.)

Joker: Last Laugh, in which The Joker breaks out a number of supervillains and "jokerizes" them, starts here. (The continuity of this story is extremely vague and messy, but this order is as accurate as I can possibly make it.)

Steph's first significant role in a bat-family crossover also contains her first on-panel interaction with Barbara (who makes no effort to hide her identity), and the first time the three iconic Batgirls (past, present, and future) work together. Steph helps Cass resuscitate an accidentally-killed villain in Bg#21, marking a turning point in their relationship.

Towards the end of the storyline, Tim is thought dead, and Steph is thrilled when she finds this isn’t true. She also appears on-panel with Nightwing for the first (and only pre-Batgirl) time...immediately after Dick has beat the Joker to death in a fury. So, uh, no small talk for their first meeting.

Bruce Wayne: Murderer/Fugitive sees Bruce arrested for murder and the family scramble to solve the case. (Note: the official order of this storyline is Wrong and I will ignore it because I am Right.) Stephanie, unaware of Batman's identity, is out the loop but still effected. She finds herself locked out of the Cave without explanation.

Steph seeks out Dinah and Barbara instead, remaining with them through most of this storyline. She also works with Tim again in R#99, with no apparent tension. Dinah finally helps Steph get her father and the Riddler out of her house in BoP#40. However, Dinah pulls back on their not-a-partnership in BoP#43, citing her work being too dangerous.

Cass has the same concerns, and Steph is irritated in Bg#27 when Cass keeps forcing her out of the most dangerous fight and knocking her out to avoid arguments.

R#100 begins Jon Lewis's run on the book, with some usual new writer switch-ups, and Steph maintaining a strong presence. Steph and Tim are back together (though I'm not sure they ever broke up, so much as just took some space), better off with all identities known, and very sweet in this era. Steph’s friendship with Cass also gets closer.

On the flip side, per R#106, the Birds of Prey off-panel decide to stop mentoring Steph, and Bruce no longer wants her around, now that he’s returned from being a fugitive. In the ensuing issues, Steph really considers if she wants to keep being Spoiler.

Things get messier with the new of Cluemaster’s death. Steph really struggles to process--and with her mother's reaction. She starts sleeping in a motel to avoid going home after R#110.

The non-Robin issues here don’t technically have a single correct placement, but per my longer order work best where I’ve put them. In Batman: Family, Steph is called in along with Batman’s greatest network of allies, despite him still disapproving of her. In YJ#50, Steph has a brief conversation with Secret about the latter’s attack.

Batman sets a test in GK#37 to prove Spoiler isn’t good enough. :( After she fails, he moves from largely ignoring her to outright disavowing her and instructing others to do the same. Steph's friendship with Cass disintegrates when Steph realizes that Cass agrees with Batman. Her interaction with Dinah is brief and tense.

Cluemaster's death continues to hang over Steph, and she’s having a really hard time. Tim is the only consistent presence in her life at this point. In R#119, she admits to him she’s still living in a motel, and he pushes her to go home. She reconciles with her mom.

Bill Willingham takes over Robin with #121, dropping that plotline, and writing Steph as more jealous again. She and Tim are alright for these first few issues. Steph breaks her leg during a fight in R#123, but keeps in shape over the next few issues.

Meanwhile, Jack Drake finds out his son is Robin and forces Tim to quit...

Laying low under his dad’s watch, Tim doesn’t speak to Steph for a few weeks, while she gets her cast off. Their reunion in R#126 is happy--but then, in a very stupid plot point, Steph thinks Tim is cheating on her and writes him off. She sews a costume, breaks into the Cave, and declares herself Robin. Bruce, continuing his pattern of replacing kids who aren’t talking to him at the first chance he gets, takes her on happily. Alfred’s objections are ignored.

As Robin, Steph once again finds herself on great terms with Batman, who is nice to her and intent on her training--right up until he suddenly isn’t. Though she interacts multiple times with Alfred here, she is still not let in on Bruce’s identity.

Despite their last meeting ending with Steph disavowing the friendship, with Bruce’s approval she’s also on good terms with Cass again. Things are a little more iffy with a skeptical Barbara, but still alright. But her relationship with Tim is on the rocks after she ghosts him. The only other hero Steph gets to interact with as Robin is Superboy in TT#13, who is incredibly unhappy to find someone other that his BFF in the costume, and pretty rude to Steph about it.

Steph finally talks to Tim over the phone in R#127, after he finds out about the new Robin from the news, but she misses their planned meet up for a case. It’s the last time they speak before her death.

In the last issue here, Bruce abruptly turns around from his friendly behavior and fires Steph for ignoring his orders. Fan debates over whether Bruce legitimately wanted Steph as Robin or was bitter towards Tim or trying to lure him back, or any combination thereof, continue to rage.

Steph tries to prove herself by starting one of Batman’s “contingency plans” to consolidate all of Gotham’s gangs, which instead ignites a gang war when she doesn’t have all the information. Cass sees her for the last time in Bg#55, and spends much of the storyline searching for her.

A distraught Steph gets some reassurance from Catwoman, who is perfectly content that Steph knows her identity, before sneaking out, determined to help. She finds Batman’s agent Orpheus--cornerstone of the plan--just before Black Mask kills him. Then some awful issues where Black Mask tortures her. Steph escapes and fights him, but is injured further when she refuses to kill him. Fleeing over the roofs, she’s found by Batman and taken to Leslie Thompson’s clinic, but her injuries are to severe and she dies anyway (until the retcon comes).

More subjectively: reading this storyline exclusively for Steph is a horrible experience. The beginning is a little rough--but everything after Black Mask catches her is horrific. The Robin issues are the worst of the bunch, contrasting a happy storyline for Tim with misogynistic literal torture for Steph.

Batman is nice to Steph on her apparent deathbed, assuring her she really was a true Robin--not that it makes up for his terrible treatment of her before, or abhorrent behavior in this storyline otherwise.

Death

Out of universe, Stephanie’s death was intended to be real and permanent, and issues over the next few years reflected that. Steph obviously doesn’t actually appear here, so I will be less thorough and just cite a few issues with heavy references:

Batman #634 - Epilogue to War Games. Includes, in flashback, Bruce telling Tim about Steph’s death

In the wake of the gang war, almost everyone except Bruce leaves Gotham.

Robin/Batgirl: Fresh Blood - Tim and Cass both move to Blüdhaven (recently abandoned by Nightwing), where their shared grief leads to them bonding for the first time.

Steph’s death continues to linger heavily over Robin and Batgirl, and their lead characters. Cass is broken and grieving for her first friend. Tim, whose dad died mere days after Steph, is falling into a dark place.

Batgirl #61-62 - Cass hallucinates Steph at a moment of near-death.

Batman Allies Secret Files (2005) #1 (last story) - Interesting discussion between Tim and Cass, partially around Steph. Lead-in to War Crimes.

Batman: War Crimes - I do not recommend this story. It introduces the idea that Steph could have been saved, but didn’t get the medical care she need. The initial suggestion is that Bruce delayed saving her--but then, of course, it turns about to completely absolve Bruce of any wrongdoing, and instead commit character assassination on Leslie Thompson. It also sees Steph’s identities revealed to the public and her father back from the dead. HOWEVER, after universe-shattering event Infinite Crisis and Steph’s return, almost everything from this storyline was retconned out of existence. Arthur Brown being alive is pretty much the only thing that remains.

Batgirl #72-73 - Cass hallucinates Steph before dying, again.

Infinite Crisis occurs here, followed by a year time skip.

Robin #156 - Now also mourning best friend Superboy/Kon, Tim talks a jumper off the ledge. Note: because of all the losses Tim had in a short period, there is unfortunately not that much time to focus on Steph specifically, and more taking his grief as a whole.

Birds of Prey #99 - Barbara tells a would-be Batgirl about Steph’s death, to warn her of the dangers of vigilantism.

Nightwing #139 - Part of The Resurrection of Ra’s al Ghul. Tim nearly uses Lazarus water to try to resurrect his dead loved ones.

Robin vol 2 #170-172 (in 2008) - appearances very brief, but references all over the place.

Gotham Underground #2-6 - (Awkward to sort with the Robin issues, but this is the best spot for it.)

Robin/Spoiler Special #1 (both stories)

A purple-clad vigilante appears in Gotham--not Spoiler, but she gets Tim thinking a lot about Steph again...right at the same time Spoiler has returned. She starts out watching Tim from afar, coyly seen in glimpses in panels, before finally being revealed to readers.

Her role in GU is mysterious to the point of complete confusion. The Penguin recruits a number of low-level lowlifes and gives them stolen costumes and tech. He notes one girl with better training than the others--her face conveniently hidden from readers--and gives her the Spoiler costume. Spoiler also gets invisibility tech, and carries a minor and largely unexplained plot thread. I genuinely thought this must just be someone else in the costume at first, but it’s later made clear it is Steph. Just not, you know...why she did any of it or what the point was.

Her real return arc is in Robin, alongside Chuck Dixon’s return to the book. Spoiler returns to fighting crime, and is revealed when she swoops in to warn Tim of a trap. For some reason, she’s very resistant to admitting it really is her, until Tim (and Bruce) tracks her down himself in R#174.

Steph explains how Leslie faked her death to protect her. Bruce admits he always suspected she was alive (oh, retcons), and for some reason is now happy to welcome her back. Despite never having been told before her “death,” Steph also knows Bruce’s identity now. Alfred is delighted to see Steph. Her survival also comes as a huge shock to her mom, who didn’t know either.

Tim’s initial elation turns into very mixed feelings over the deception. Spoiler and Robin team up again, but tensions persist. The lack of resolution to their romantic relationship hangs over them as well--especially now that Tim is maybe seeing another girl from school, Zo.

The second story in R/S Special is largely a flashback to Steph’s time in Africa with Leslie over the time she was faking her death. I’m...not sure they ever specify more than “Africa” :/

Chuck Dixon was replaced with Fabian Nicieza shortly after for the final stretch of Robin. This span of time is tied up in Bruce’s disappearance at the hand of the Black Glove (from RIP), and then in the aftermath of his death (from Final Crisis). Steph is very much treated as a side character in Tim’s story here.

When Bruce vanishes, she’s worried over Tim’s increasingly shady decisions. It turns out she’s also been following orders secretly given to her by Batman before he disappeared, to keep Tim away from the Black Glove stuff and help him in Bruce’s absence. Obviously this only makes things more tense between her and Tim.

Steph tries to learn more about Batman’s disappearance over in Outsiders. As Cass is now part of the Outsiders, this contains their first appearance together since Steph’s “death”...which is extremely underwhelming and addresses none of that at all.

(Bruce dies either before R#177 or after #182. It’s awkward to place, as it is for really all the bat-family books. He’s only referred to as missing in #177-182, and not as explicitly dead until #183. Usually I would prioritize that to say he only dies after #182, but because Tim is in complete denial over Bruce’ death anyway, we could indeed stick Final Crisis right after RIP, as Morrison claimed. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The timing of FC is fucked up anyway, so it’s not like it will ever read smoothly.)

Despite the tension between them, Tim asks Steph to come with him as moral support in TT, when he feels compelled to quit the team so he can focus on bat-problems. (This issue breaking up the Robin storyline is awkward, but it really only can work in this exact spot.)

With Batman gone (and some help from villainous Jason Todd), Gotham’s gangs are stirring against each other. Steph, for some reason, keeps trying to follow Bruce’s secret orders push Tim to be a better vigilante. She hires an assassin, Scarab, against Robin and tries to make a deal with Tim’s old nemesis Ulysses Armstrong, resulting in her being shot, Tim having half his head burnt off, and many people dying. It’s, uh. Not great in- or out-of-universe. imo might be Steph’s worst storyline.

Tim is furious about all of this, and in the immediate aftermath of two kids dying, declares he doesn’t want to see Steph in the Spoiler costume ever again. While I hate the way Steph was written in this story, admittedly I...have a hard time faulting Tim for being upset in this scene.

Red Robin #2 (end of issue)

Steph does not appear in the main story of Battle for the Cowl, but does appear in the GG framing issues, which go before and after it respectively. Steph considers her future, and again decides to stick with vigilantism. In Alive, she and Tim have a much calmer talk after the blow up in Robin--though Tim still doesn’t believe in her.

Later, in RR, when Dick expresses concern over Tim to her, Steph goes after him to check in. He coldly rejects her worry, shortly before he leaves town to find Bruce.

Steph finally becomes her own starring character in Batgirl. A “three weeks ago” flashback explains that Cassandra left Steph the costume before vanishing (and contains the only other post-death content they get together).

The other bats quickly realize she is not the same Batgirl. Barbara disapproves at first, but comes around and the two soon form a close bond. Babs takes on a deuteragonist role in Batgirl, sharing narration and having subplots of her own. She gives Steph guidance, Oracle-style support, and resources--including Steph’s own costume starting in #4. With the new Batman & Robin operating out of the penthouse/bunker, Batgirl and Oracle take over the Cave.

Steph juggles Batgirl with the start of her first year at college, and hiding her resumed vigilantism from her mom. Other supporting characters introduced here include the bitchy girl at school; another classmate Steph is crushing on; and police detective Gage, the Gordon to her Batman, who she enjoys flirting with.

As a new main member of team bat, Steph gets to meet and interact with a lot of people in this era. Dick initially does not approve, even telling Babs to get out of the Cave, but he comes around by the end of the story arc (#5-7). This is also Steph’s first meeting with Damian. She is as annoyed as everyone is upon meeting Damian, but takes it in stride, and the pair work together pretty successfully. Over in WF, she meets Supergirl for the first time, and the two become fast friends.

Shortly after, Tim returns to Gotham, displeased to find Steph in the suit instead of Cass. He’s unkind, Steph snaps back, and they bicker...but cool off, work together, and make up. The role reversal from their very first appearances--Steph now the bright optimist and Tim falling to the pitfalls of cold loner--is clear. But by RR#10, Tim outright apologizes and asks for her help with his Ra’s al Ghul problem.

Steph and Barbara move from the Cave to a new base, “Firewall,” beneath Barbara’s apartment building. In #22, Steph goes to London on a mission for Bruce/Batman Inc, where she meets and befriends Squire/Beryl Hutchinson. She gets to the actual mission in B Inc, infiltrating a villainous finishing school.

In the final arc before the reboot, Steph discovers her father is alive. When he puts her under the influence of a Black Mercy, Batgirl is taken to the very hostpital where her mom works. Crystal obvious recognizes her, protects her identity, and is ultimately proud of her daughter. <3

Today is the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin. Before that, Type 1 diabetes was a death sentence.

For perspective, I've been diabetic for about 25% of this discovery's history. When my grandparents were born, this treatment did not exist. If you ask me, "what time period would be fun to go back to?" I can't even speculate more than one hundred years back, because I know I couldn't live in that world.

Today, I'm going to pick up four boxes of insulin from my local drug store. My endocrinologist is renewing my prescription, so I'm set for several months to come. I lead a more difficult life than someone without Type 1 diabetes, but I do live, and so do my relatives and friends with the condition. Thank you, Banting, Best, Macleod, and Collip (and all those dogs), for letting me do that.

One hundred years later, after insulin's discoverer gave his patent away for $1 so as never to profit from the discovery, pharmaceutical companies are forcing people to ration insulin or go without entirely due to unchecked price increases. This is particularly true in the US, and is a major reason why I did not stay there after graduate school. There, and in much of the world where insulin is expensive and scarce, people are dying. Things are starting to change, but not soon enough. It's been one hundred years, and we need to do better when the alternative is death.

Insulin is worth being grateful about, and its exploitation is worth being angry about. One thing to be aware of is that it is a treatment only, not a cure. Diabetes is still high-maintenance, and I still have a very complicated relationship to it.

Today, though, I'm choosing to focus on my gratitude, and being alive, and being able to go for a walk with my friend in the rain-scented air, do some trivia, see a show.

They say the change in the first child to receive a dose of insulin, 100 years ago, looked like magic.

Just fyi, & happy “Independence” day

If you guys see a post about a Change.org petition against Mark Zuckerberg to stop him from suing Native Hawaiians for land on Kaua‘i island, like, IT’S A WEIRD SORT OF MISINFORMATION.

I saw it 2x on my dashboard, and thought, huh? This sounds really familiar, didn’t this happen awhile ago? (Spoiler: 4 years ago, but the petition was made a week ago?!). Please don’t reblog that useless petition, or delete it if you already did.

Here’s why this whole business makes me feel like 🤮:

1. Sometime in 2016, the Facebook guy was looking at his Kauai property and thought, hm, I need to own the beach over there, too (you know, how greedy rich people are).

2. He filed a bunch of quiet lawsuits to figure out who owns the land surrounding him and bid them out. Turns out the property is owned by hundreds of different people, some Native Hawaiians since The Great Mahele (Kuleana Act & disastrous Alien Land Ownership Act) in 1850, but most of the owners were descended from one Portuguese plantation “worker” (must’ve been high up in the chain of command to be able to buy so much land back then).

3. Turns out only one descendent was paying taxes on and taking care of the land, some descendents knew about this private beach and used it, still other “family” members didn’t even know about their 0.5% parcel of land until they got notice of the lawsuit.

4. Facebook guy and tax-paying guy sorta kinda team up, the other cousins are outraged. Facebook guy eventually drops out of this lawsuit/family dispute due to local public outcry HELLO OKAY YOU SEE HOW THIS IS OLD NEWS NOW?, but then tax-paying guy is still like, Yeah, I need to consolidate the parcels under only my ownership, let’s continue this lawsuit. It’s in everyone’s best interests that I own the land. (...So family drama wasn’t over. I don’t know how the story ended, but whatever.)

Moral of the story: Zuckerberg still a poop-blazing example of a truly complete, total haole who doesn’t understand the significance of kuleana lands.

And also importantly, a lot of that disputed land was privately owned by a Portuguese man, who bought it using money earned from working the plantations, yes, oh the strange irony in that due to the fact that it was the plantation businessmen who overthrew Queen Lili‘uokalani, and brought the unconstitutional end of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1893. This is just an example of how super rich people like the Facebook guy exacerbate and contribute to the continued systemic oppression of Native Hawaiians, how stupid laws and the Facebook guy got local, even native, families fighting against each other over land piece by piece, and how the State of Hawaii is in fact COLONIZED stolen land in the first place (happy independence day for who now?).

Initially what annoyed me so much is the false premise of the petition, whoever posted it barely looked into the background behind it (I mean, it’s 3-4 years old news, why make a petition now).

But then I got myself worked up thinking about how this whole story in itself reads as some kind of...mockery?...of Native Hawaiian issues, how the person who posted it obviously doesn’t actually care about understanding the history and importance of native lands and just wanted to point a finger at this Facebook dude since he’s trending. And how there’s hundreds of thousands of people just joining in on this ignorance, signing that totally useless petition without knowing any better (like petitions are great, but this one is just....so misguided).

Anyway, instead of signing that petition for a lawsuit that’s no longer even happening, there are other better ways to show allyship with indigenous people.

Planning tips if you dont have time to bullet journal or want more structure or want something less expensive. To those who do want to bullet journal but dont have the means to get a fancy shmancy notebook, there is a cheap alternative to the leuchtturm book at walmart and since they habe collaborated with a youtuber they have put out a better product from the last notebooks they had. The notebook is exceed they have dots and look quite similar to leuchtturm. I definitely recommend checking it out.

Alright here is my tip and a mini story time. I really wanted a planner that didnt have days of the week or daily pages. All i wanted was a plannar with months. This proved to be extremely difficult. I looked at staples and office depot and couldnt find what i was looking for. The prices ranged from around $30-$14 which is a lot of money if u ask me. I decided i needed to go to the stores to check out the planners. I asked my friend who has a car if we could check out both places, so we went to office depot first. Nothing... then we went to staples, where I looked for like 20 mins. We only payed for like 30 mins of parking so i was looking kind of frantically for something that i could use. I finally was about to call it a day when i decided to take one last sweep through the whole store. This is when i noticed a shelf at the end of an aisle that had travelers notebook looking notebooks. Normally you buy a nice cover and then you buy inserts. Its a way to customize your planner. I was thinking that I didn't want to get the whole cover and multiple inserts, but it dawned on me that i didn't have to, so i just got the insert. This was like $7, I want to say it was around $4, but I can't find the price on the website anymore, so I'd rather round up a lot. This insert has like 3 years worth of calendar spreads, so I think its it's definitely worth getting.

Now for why I even wanted this type of planner. I don't have tasks to do everyday, so for me, having daily pages just isn't worth it. Then you may ask why not have the weekly pages, and to that i say because I like being able to see the overview of the whole month and the weeks at the same time. I got a packet of weekly spread stickies and i use those every week and I put it on the month spread. I used to love bullet journaling, but i have no time for it, and if I start one and don't continue with it, it stresses me out and i become unhappy. I have color coded all my classes so i can just write deadlines on my monthly calendar and whenci look at it, I immediately know what what subjects ill be focusing on for the week.

This is a very long post, but i hope ive explained things enough and thats its all understandable. This is a very inexpensive way to plan and it doesnt take up a lot of time. Of course you can decorate it which I do when i have time. I love seeing a beautiful bullet journal spread, but usually, the notebook is expensive and the process is time intensive. I wanted to give this as an option for those who need something more on the go and readu for action right out of the bag. I use muji pens that my roommate from last year got me, and some sarasa pens. I really dont use the zebra mildliners, so im glad i didn't get a huge pack. I really love the uni propus highlighters because of the beautiful colors and the little window it has to see what you're highlighting. My favorite pencil since middle school is the pentel twist erase with 0.5 graphite but it comes in 0.7 as well. Hopefully this has been informative and gives you some ideas for planners in the future. I just realized that this is in time for the new years, so that's a fun surprise. I love you all, and i can't believe ive been a part of this community for about 4 or 5 years now! My Nani’s Nankhatai

Hello friends! This right here is pretty much the only cookie recipe I can’t mess up! My grandmother sent me this recipe and it’s so good I have to share!

Ingredients:

1½ cups all-purpose flour

½ cup besan/chickpea flour/gram flour/whatever name you know it by

⅓ cup sugar

4-8 tablespoons** ghee (clarified butter) or butter

2 green cardamom pods

One pinch salt

¼ teaspoon baking powder

*Note: You need ⅙ as much sugar as flour, no matter what ratio you use.

**Another note: the amount of ghee I’ve added has fluctuated depending on the weather. When it’s colder, there’s more ghee heaped onto each tablespoon because ghee is more solid when cold. When the weather is warmer, I need to add more spoonfuls of ghee because it’s more liquid and runny.

Steps:

Mix the flour, salt, and baking powder in a bowl.

Open up the cardamom pods. Grind up the seeds. (You can use a rolling pin to crush them, that’s fun! Or just use a grinder.) Add them to the bowl and mix well again.

Add the sugar to a different bowl.

Add the ghee to the same bowl as the sugar and mix until it’s fluffier and a lighter color. If you’re unsure of the quantity of ghee you need to add because of the subjectiveness I explained above, err on the side of caution; it’s easier to add more ghee later on if the dough isn’t what it’s supposed to look like.

Add the butter/sugar mix slowly to the flour mix. I recommend using your hands! The dough should be a little crumbly, but it should easily hold shape when you roll it up into small balls in your hand. (See the pics below for a reference!) If you’ve added all the ghee and the dough is too dry, just add more ghee a little at a time. If the dough is the right consistency but you still have more ghee+sugar mix to add, stop and throw in a bit more sugar, then mix.

Once you’ve got the right consistency, roll up small balls and flatten a bit between your palms.

Bake how you would usually bake shortbread. I think it’s like. 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes? If you’re using a toaster oven, probably go for around 250-300 degrees Fahrenheit and maybe a bit longer. There should be little cracks on top, and they should be a little brown.

The hardest part: wait for them to cool. Then, MONCH.

Variations!

If you don’t have any besan, feel free to go just full-on flour! Also, ladoo besan and kala chana besan work in this recipe too!

Replace part or all of the ghee with butter. Ghee isn’t in the cupboard of every family, but using butter gets great results too! Just soften the butter in the microwave for 10 seconds or something so that you can mix it up with the sugar.

Double/triple the amount of cardamom you add! I actually usually add 5 pods because I like to live my life with maximum flavor.

Our ingredient lineup! I used kala chana besan instead of normal besan or ladoo besan, but it’s fine in the recipe. Usually I would use one of the other two, but this is totally fine! Note the little steel bowl between the kala chana packet and the baking powder. It’s called a katori, and it’s what I use instead of measuring cups for the flour, besan, and sugar. This is important to note because when I’m talking about “cups” in the recipe above, I’m actually measuring stuff in one of these little guys instead. :

The amount of salt I used! I just sorta dumped it onto a tablespoon.

The amount of baking powder I used. I was lazy and didn’t want to pull out a teaspoon, so again, tablespoon was used for this one too! :

The amount of cardamom I added:

The ground-up cardamom, mixed in with the flour. Since I ground it up pretty finely, you can’t really see it, but it’s totally fine if yours is a little coarser:

1/3 katori sugar, in a bowl:

The sugar mixed with four heaping tablespoons of ghee. As you can see, it becomes fluffier and lighter than the plain unmixed ghee in the contained to its left. Unfortunately I couldn’t grab a picture of the quantity of ghee I added because my hands were greasy, rip!

The dough after all the ghee was mixed in with the flour. It’s still a little too dry:

I added one large tablespoon more of ghee to fix the dryness of the dough:

And here’s one little flattened sphere of that dough, to know roughly the size and shape you’re going to eventually put on your tray and stick in your oven:

And finally, here’s the cookies after they popped out of the oven, with a lighting change because the sun set while they were baking! As you can see, some of them are a little smaller, because my mom rolled up those ones and she makes them smaller. It’s all good though, and you still get great results! Since I used kala chana besan, these cookies are a little darker and a little less yellow than what I usually get, so don’t be worried if yours aren’t this color! :

now that I have slightly more energy (and because my sleep schedule is wacked out due to pain meds), I can give a bit more of an in depth surgery update

my laproscopic endometriosis excision surgery was scheduled for this past Thursday morning. we got in on time and everything stayed on schedule. the surgery itself was 4 hours. I was taken care of by an amazing surgical team - they were great at calming me down and treated me with the utmost respect and commission every step of the way

I haven't yet spoken to my doctor, but he said he'd be calling on day 3 or 4 after the surgery, so I expect to hear from him this weekend, but he has spoken to my mom already and told her he found a TON of endometriosis all over the place, mostly on my bowels and intestines. I am so glad to know that it's gone

recovery is going pretty smooth, with only a minor hiccup yesterday having to do with the gas they used during the surgery. when you get laproscopic surgery, the doctor needs to expand your abdominal cavity with CO2 gas so they can see easier, and it's very common to have referred pain afterwards, even though they try to get as much out as they can. yesterday morning the pain was extremely intense - uncontrollable crying, etc etc. but we called the doctor's office and they were able to recommend some over the counter stuff for me to take, and by the end of the day yesterday I was walking unassisted!

today I should be able to shower and take the outer bandages off. the incisions themselves are like 0.5 cm wide, so they shouldn't give me too much trouble. they haven't so far.

after I speak with my doctor I might reblog this post with more info about what he found and anything else interesting I hear. I'm so glad to be on the other side of this!!

Virgin Olive Oil and Diabetes + common health problems

While doing some unrelated research on the effects of Salicylic acid on Rats, (used in things like acne treatments as well as veterinary ear cleanser,) I stumbled upon this interesting article about the effects of Virgin Olive Oil (VOO) on rats with diabetes.

Not only does it help the aspirin work better, it seems to have a similar effect to aspirin when used alone. I continued my research on diabetes in rats to reach this article so you know what to look for, but also not to worry too much as it is uncommon. (Out of my 15 years of rat experience, I've only witnessed one rat professionally diagnosed with diabetes, but it is important to understand as many of the health risks to your pet as possible so you know what to do in case you do encounter an odd behavior that might be an early warning of health problems.)

Some more common health problems to look out for are;

Head tilt ear infection

(if you notice an odd/bad/sweet smell near your rat's head on either one or both sides, immediately treat with ear cleanser, (or olive oil if you can not obtain pet ear cleaners, but I strongly recommend trying to find the cleaner regardless as it can be used to clean dirty/stained/oily rat tails and claws,) but only use sparingly as the Salicylic acid can build up in their system and cause toxicity as it takes a long time to be expelled through the rats urine. Take the rat to a vet if you can afford to because a head tilt ear infection greatly lowers mobility and quality of life because once their head is tilted, the rat does not usually recover it's balance, even if the infection is eliminated, due to the destruction of the inner ear mechanism.)

Mammary gland tumors

Extremely common in female rats, (30-90% of females, 0.5-16% in males) (the reason I switched back to male rats tbh,) and starts as a small lump along the underside of the rat that grows pretty quickly. The tumor can grow until it is almost as large as the rat itself before the rat's body can no longer sustain both the rat and the tumor and the rats immune system fails, leading to multiple health failures until she passes. The only way to prevent the death is to get the tumor removed, as most of these tumors are benign. (If the tumor has a blue colour, it is almost always malignant/cancerous.)

Pituitary tumor

20% of female rats and 7% of males. (Spaying can reduce this to 4%) This tumor is under the rats brain and causes neurological problems. The symptoms commonly progresses slowly, (but can progress rapidly,) leading to compromised mobility that is most easily noticeable in their arms and hands as they struggle to hold food, and may start to have porphyrin caked onto their wrists. The rat may start to act confused, hyperactive, and show other odd behavior due to the tumor causing pressure on the rats brain.

Abscesses and cysts

I've had a few rats, (including Reggie, actually,) that have gotten abscesses or cysts. Abssesses happen when a scratch or bite or other irritant causes puss to accumulate in the the skin, causing a bump. In the case of cysts, it is a buld up of rat oil and dead skin in their oil glands instead of puss and it doesn't usually grow as fast or get as big as an abscess. I've seen an abscess get to the size of a marble, but they range in size. Abssesses and cysts can resolve themselves on their own, opening and draining with the rat cleaning the wound himself and the rat may not even scar. However, if an abscess is not healing or if the puss is too thick for the rat to deal with themselves you can assist them with draining and cleaning the abscess as well as trimming the fur around the effected area. In the case of cysts, you can squeeze out the build up and clean the wound. You may have to drain the cyst multiple times before it heals completely. Reggie had a cyst the size of a grain of rice around his shoulder/collarbone that he couldn't deal with himself, and even though it was not bothering him at the time, he had had it for a while with out change so I squeezed out the build up for him and treated it with polysporin. The cyst did not return. (Males are more likely to get cysts because they are extra oily. Reggie is at a disadvantage for this as well, as he has no undercoat to move the oil through his fur so I wouldn't be surprised if I have to repeat this experience multiple times.)

Rats are also very likely to contract Respiratory illnesses from the bacteria mycoplasma, or a secondary bacterium or virus. The only way to combat it is meditation.

Rarely, rats can have allergies, but if your rat is sneezing a lot or gets the 'hiccups'(actually a type of sneeze,) often times they have respiratory illness. Almost all 'fancy rats' have some level of mycoplasma, even if they are asymptomatic and may only start to show symptoms of an infection once their immune system is compromised.

Simple wounds and sprains

Simple wounds like scratches and bites that are not life threatening can be treated with polysporin. If the polysporin does not stop an infection from starting, the wound can be cleaned with hydrogen peroxide, as long as you clean all of it up after because it is toxic if ingested. Sprained ankles can sometimes occur, (I've delt with 2 rats with sprains,) and as extreme as the swelling may look, if it's foot is not broken it will heal, surprisingly, with in a few days. (If you do suspect a break, it is better safe than sorry to go to the vet if you can afford it.)

Mental health

Rats can have anxiety or become depressed, with similar symptoms humans. Rats can become depressed if left alone for too long or are in an inappropriate environment or develop anxiety if not handled properly or if the rat has experienced trauma. Just like people though, some rats are just more anxious than others. (Reggie for example has anxiety but he has been handled since he was a baby and spoiled.)

This became a longer post than I expected, however knowing as much as possible about your pets health risks is important to provide care for your pets in the case of an illness, wound or emergency.

hello so i reblogged a questionnaire a lil bit ago and i’m going to answer them now because...why not

1. how old are you?

im 18!

2. are you in high school or college(university)?

college

3. what year or grade are you in high school or (university)?

im a freshman in college

4. what is your school’s grading system look like? do you like it? what problems do you have with it, if any?

so my university has a standard letter grade system for most classes and pass/fail for some courses that don’t really need a grade. i do like it because it’s what i’m used to, however, a lot of times having a letter grade system can be more stressful because it makes you feel like anything but some kind of A is mediocre and not good enough, when in reality, a 75% or above is better than average.

5. if you are in high school do you plan on going to university or college? if you are in college do you plan on finishing and if you do, do you plan on continuing on to other graduate or professional schools?

i plan on going to veterinary school after i finish my undergraduate degree! if i end up changing my major to my second choice(music education is my second choice), then of course I won’t be going to vet school.

6. if you are high school what do you plan to study in college, if you plan to go. if not, what do you plan on doing after high school? if you are in college what is your major? do you plan on changing it?

i am currently studying biochemistry and molecular biology and i have a minor in music! i dont plan on changing it at this point, but if i do, i’d change it to music education.

7. why are you picking or why did you pick what you are currently studying?

i want to go to vet school, and biochemistry has almost all the requirements for vet school admissions. also, i find it interesting

8. do you go/plan to go to community college, technical college, or a four-year institution? how did you make your decision, or how do you plan to?

i am at a 4 year university, and i went here because it fits what i want to do

9. what factors did you consider when picking a college, or what factors do you plan on considering?

the college I chose is in my hometown, which is probably one of the deciding factors(i really wanted to be close to home). the campus is very pretty and small as well, and i really wanted to go to a small college. i could have potentially gone to The Ohio State University because i’m about 20 minutes away, but the camous is so big and i know i would have hated it. the school also has a good music program, soi can continue playing even though it isn’t my major

10. what is your favorite pencil?

i love my muji mechanical pencil and also the papermate clearpoint!

11. what are your top three favorite pens?

pilot juice, muji gel pens, and sharpie pens

12. do you prefer wide-ruled paper, college-ruled, dot-grid, or graph paper?

college ruled is my favorite for class notes, graph paper for revised/nice notes/math work, and blank for planning generally

13. do you use different types of paper for different courses or classes?

i use college ruled for almost everything except math homework(i use graph)

14. do you use a backpack/bag for school or college and what kind is it? why did you choose it? price, quality, function, design?

i use a backpack, i have no idea what brand it is, but its the perfect size for everything i need to take to classes and its also really pretty(it has a black background with flowers on it)

15. what is your favorite outfit to go to class in and why?

i generally wear leggings and a sweatshirt/sweater just because they’re comfy and also look cute! if its warm enough, i wear flip flops but if not, i wear my vans or converse.

16. what is something you always have to have in your backpack or bag?

usually my laptop and pencil case

17. what is your least favorite subject and why?

math!!!!!!! will always hate. guarunteed.

18. have you ever gone to tutoring, if so, how has it helped your academic endeavors?

i have not

i haven’t

20. has your mental health ever suffered during high school or college, and what did you do to cope?

holy shit yes. i suffer from depression and anxiety(depression for almost a year and anxiety for 4 years). i could make a whole post about this but in general, i make sure i give myself time to relax. it can be so so hard to take care of yourself when you suffer with things like this, so even if you can barely get out of bed, try to make time to do things that make you happy. for me, it’s drawing, netflix, and video games.

21. do you like to listen to music when studying? if so, what genre, if you have a playlist share it!

22. do you prefer to study at a library or at home at your desk?

depends what i’m working on and how much i have to do. if i feel like i have to be totally focused, i go to the library, but if i have some time to take breaks and get distracted, i just stay in my room. I also hate going to the library on my own, so sometimes i stay in my room anyway if no one can come with.

23. what are your top three items you keep on your desk?

my lamp, my laptop, and whatever drink i’m drinking while working( i always have a drink so i avoid snacking lol)

24. do you feel as if you are more productive during the day or in the evenings?

evenings for sure

25. if you exercise, do you feel as if it affects your productivity and if so how?

i do marching band which is usually my exercise, but i don’t work out. working out just exhausts me and i don’t have energy to begin with(ye ye depression)

26. do you participate in any extracurriculars and if so how do you manage your time?

marching band and wind ensemble! i’m also joing KKPsi, which is an honorary fraternity for music service! i am not great at time management, however, i plan out everything to hold myself accountable

27. do you use a bullet journal, a planner, or to-do lists? do you use a combination of all three?

i use a combo of all three! i’ve been bullet journalling a lot recently, but i also use a planner during busy weeks when i dont have time to make a spread and i make to do lists for weekends

28. do you have a note-taking style?

nothing specific

29. do you have a color-coding system?

i like to make every different topic/spread a different color. also, when i make notes, i like to highlight vocab words.

30. what do you believe is one of the most overrated studyblr trends?

100 days of productivity. its impossible to be completely productive for 100 days straight. shit happens, and i understand the purpose of the 100 days challenge, but i think it also takes a toll on you mentally.

31. what are your career goals, how do you plan to reach them?

i want to be a veterinarian or someone that works with animals somehow. i hope to go to vet school and then have my own practice or join another practice.

32. do you use a laptop? if so which model? how does it perform, would you reccomend it? if not, what model would you like?

i use a macbook air! it is nice because it is easy to transport, but occasionally the functionality can be questionable(storage space is always my issue). i do reccommend it, though. if i could get a new laptop, i’d probably get a macbook pro.

33. do you use a tablet? if so which model? how does it perform, would you reccomend it? if not, what model are you interested in?

i don’t, but i think having an iPad would be nice!

34. if you post pictures to tumblr, do you use a camera or your phone, if so, what is the model?

i use my iPhone 6s

usually .5 or .7

i tend to study for a majority of the day most days, but it always differs. i have no set timetable

so i am in 8 courses right now. Biology, Gen Chem, Bio Lab, Gen Chem Lab, Calculus I, The History of rock n roll, Wind Ensemble, and Marching band.

39. how long until you graduate? in credit hours, semesters, or years?

i still have 3.5 years left of college, which is 7 semesters

40. how did you find the studyblr community?

honestly i dont remember, it was so long ago

i was in a big funk my sophomore year of high school. i had no motivation, i hated learning, i hated everything tbh. but them i found this community and it inspired me and showed me that studying can be fun and pretty while also being a learning experience!

43. what is something you are too afraid to be involved in at school or college and why?

in high school, i was very afraid to get involved with a lot of things, such as theatre and some other clubs just because of anxiety.

i write them mostly, but my biology professor talks really fast so i usually type notes for his class

netflix, eat, play video games, probably other stuff i’m forgetting

honestly i just look through lecture notes and hope for the best. occasionally i do practice problems but not often

i rewrite them because it helps me memorize things

math of any kind! i also hate biology right now just because my professor sucks

i recently got out of a relationship, but im open to being in a relationship with someone

it was very hard to manage it honestly, but i did what i could to make time, even if it was only just having a meal together.

if i find the right person, yea! being in relationsips is great, especially because you have a companion to help you when you’re struggling

52. do you worry about GPA, if so why, if not why?

oh my god yes i do. i have to have a certain GPA to keep my scholarship money and to stay in the honors program, plus i just want to do well.

53. did you or do you plan to take the SAT or ACT, how did you feel about the exams? did you study for them? have you taken it more than once?

i did take both the SAT and ACT. i did well on each, but the SAT was a lot harder for me. I got a 1220(i think) on the SAT and a 31 on the ACT. i took the ACT twice

54. did you or do you plan to take the GRE, LSAT, PCAT, MCAT, DAT (or any other grad exam)? how did it go? how are you or how did you study for it? have you taken it more than once?

i’m going to take the MCAT

55. do you or did you take AP classes is high school? how do you feel about how they prepared you for college? did your school require you to take the exam?

yes i did take AP classes! i took 9 total, and they overall did help me learn how to manage time better as well as how to study. we weren’t required to take the exams, but i always did

56. do you or did you do the IB program in high school? can you explain it more for those who are unfamiliar with it?

i did not, however the IB program is basically an intensive high school honors program that is very writing intensive. its like AP on steroids

57. do your or did you take dual-enrollment classes? how did you feel about how they prepared you for college?

i didnt but i wish i did!

i applied to 5 colleges. i already knew where i wanted to go, but i wanted to be safe just in case i didnt get in, so i applied to the 5 i was most interested in. I also wanted to see if any other schools would give me a lot more financial aid.

59. how did you make friends in college or high school?

through band! in both situations

60. has your friend group stayed the same throughout your time in school?

yes actually! i’m still very close to all my high school friends and a few of them go to my college as well. of course i’ve met new people but i. also still have the same friends

61. how does your friend group influence your goals?

we all have our own goals, we just encourage each other and act as an outlet for stress

62. what is your favorite thing to learn about in your free time?

music and current events

i like to eat carrots/pretzels with hummus or oreos

being depressed or tired

yes. wednesdays are my hell days class-wise, so i refrain from doing work on those days after my classes are over

i really love reading but i never have time

coffee with full caffeine! i always add creamer, and i drink it because it wakes me up

i have notebooks for every class and binders as well

i either recycle them if they won’t be necessary anymore or i keep them in my closet

my band director was very impactful on my life just because he was my teacher for 5 years, so we had a good relationship

my film and lit class had a massive impact on me. it made me think in very different ways

my dad inspires me a lot because he worked so hard to find a career he loved and kept going until he got there. he’s also endlessly supportive of me
