Only One Choice, Part 2, Chapter 9
Read it here on AO3 / Tagging @today-in-fic
When she wakes, she momentarily can’t place where she is. The room is dim and there’s a soft whirring sound, a warm body tucked close against her back. Mulder’s apartment, she remembers. They’d decided to make it a double feature, collecting their clothes and switching out Mars Attacks for Twister. She must have drifted off at some point, with Mulder spooning her on the narrow couch, and the automatic rewind on the VCR kicked on when the movie ended. She pulls in a deep breath and his arm around her waist tightens momentarily.
“Stay,” he croaks from behind her, sounding as though he had also fallen asleep.
“I can’t, Mulder,” she replies, twisting her body around to face him, her nose pressed into his chest.
“Why?” he asks, brushing his palm up and down over her back.
“Because, I shouldn’t.” She knows her tone isn’t all that convincing.
“Says who?” he asks, though not indignantly.
“Says…I don’t know. Me, I guess,” she replies in a defeated tone.
He sighs, then pauses to consider his words.
“I don’t want to pressure you. But the idea of not seeing you again for a week kind of makes me want to die.” His words are soft and measured, communicating honesty, not frustration.
“That’s very dramatic,” she answers with a teasing lilt.
“I know, I’m sorry. I’m pathetic.”
She worms up until she’s close enough to kiss him, pressing her lips to his cheek and then his mouth.
“You’re not pathetic,” she says tenderly, “you’re actually very sweet. I’ll make you a deal; I’m not going to stay the night,” she quirks a smile at his dramatic frown, “but we can get dinner tomorrow, and if you want to have coffee one day this week, you can come down.” She gives him a hopeful smile.
“That seems like a fair deal,” he says, kissing her forehead. “But if you get home, or wake up in the middle of the night, and realize you’ve made a horrible mistake, just call me. I’ll come right over.”
“I promise I will,” she says, then disentangles herself from his arms and collects her purse and shoes. She says goodbye to Priscilla, then bids a very long and very kiss-filled goodbye to Mulder before he finally releases his grip on her. As she waits for the elevator she hears the patter of his bare feet on the hallway floor and turns to see him skittering towards her, pulling her into one last kiss before he runs back to his apartment door, waving at her with a coy little smile.
Once she’s buckled into her car, she lets out a deep breath. She’d barely made it out of there; if Mulder had asked one more time, kissed her once more on the couch, she might have caved. Might have stayed the night, and might have done who knows what else. She can easily see the strong potential for this budding relationship to fast track to being more serious than she feels ready for, and it scares her. She’s never felt this strongly about anyone so soon after becoming involved with them. Clearly he has a strong pull on her, given that she cheated on Ethan with him, it’s just a lot, and she’s a person who likes to think clearly and make rational decisions. When she’s with Mulder, she loses the ability to think rationally.
When she’s home and tucked into bed, she does wish he were there, curled up behind her. Knowing she could call him and he’d be here in fifteen minutes is tempting, but she talks herself out of it. Not yet, not until she’s sure that this is more than just animal attraction. More than wanting to prove she didn’t destroy her relationship with Ethan over nothing.
It has to be more. And she suspects that it will be.
———
“Okay, spill it,” Missy says, and Dana looks at her with a mildly shocked expression, not even having fully taken her seat at the cafe with a mocha in hand before Missy gets down to business.
“Hello to you, too, Missy. How was your evening?” she asks her sister with a facetious tone.
“I hung around by myself and wondered what kind of action my little sister was getting that I wasn’t, so please, indulge me.”
Dana laughs and shakes her head, debating how much detail to give.
“It was nice, we just watched a couple movies, ate pizza, drank beer.”
“...and?” Missy asks expectantly.
“...and, we watched Mars Attacks and Twister,” Dana answers, knowing that this is not the information Missy is asking for.
Missy drops her head to the side with a frustrated glare. “Dana, quit being a prude, or I’ll just make up my own story and tell it to you right here in the coffee shop, I know you’d love that.”
Dana makes a face. “Okay, fine. Yes, we...fooled around. But we didn’t have sex.”
“Really, why not?” Missy questions incredulously.
“Missy, it’s not that abnormal not to sleep with someone on the second date,” Dana retorts with an annoyed tone.
“It is if they’ve already gone down on you and you’ve been obsessing over them for almost a year,” Missy shoots back.
“Well, regardless of your unsolicited opinion,” Dana replies, “emphasis on unsolicited, I’m choosing to wait a bit, and there’s nothing wrong with that.”
“Fine, whatever floats your boat, Sis. Please elaborate on ‘fooled around’.”
Dana scoffs. “We...kissed, and some other things. Why are you asking for all this detail, Missy? I don’t recall you ever asking me to be this explicit regarding my sex life with Ethan.”
Missy rolls her eyes. “I’m willing to bet Ethan was into missionary with the lights off. This Mulder guy has serious sexual energy, he seems like the kind of man who knows what he’s doing. When’s his birthday?”
Scully frowns at the memory. “October 13th,” she answers flatly.
Missy shoots her a surprised expression, but suppresses it quickly. “Oh, wow, okay. Um, so he’s a libra. That’s a good thing, libras are very generous lovers.”
“I have seen evidence of that, however my pants stayed on last night so nothing to report in that respect,” Dana answers, taking a sip of her coffee to avoid looking at her sister.
“But his didn’t?” Missy asks with a smirk, and Dana purses her lips but doesn’t respond. It’s as good as saying yes.
“Dana Katherine Scully,” Missy teases with a knowing smile. “Some things never change.”
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” Dana asks defensively.
“Oh please, Dana, we went to the same school, you don’t think I heard the story about you and Marcus behind the gymnasium?”
Dana’s mouth hangs open in shock.
“Well, I hope he enjoyed his favor being reciprocated nine months later,” Missy continues, then adds “did you swallow?”
Her mouth drops open wider and she slaps Missy gently on the upper arm. “Melissa, don’t be gross!”
Missy is giggling and swatting her away. “You know what Dad always said, Dana, ‘a Scully sees it through to the end!’” She crosses her arms over her face in self-defense as Dana peppers her with little slaps, though they’re both laughing.
Finally, the tittering subsides and they are both back in their respective seats, catching their breath.
“So when are you seeing him again?” Missy asks, tucking her feet underneath her legs.
“Tonight, actually.” Dana answers self-consciously.
“Oh really? So soon?”
“Well he practically begged me to stay the night and said he didn’t want to wait until next weekend, so it was somewhat of a compromise,” Dana answers, the arrangement sounding like a red flag to her own ears.
“Dang, he’s got it bad,” Missy remarks with a little frown. “Is it too much? Are you doing that thing?”
“What thing?” Dana asks defensively.
“That thing where you get overwhelmed when someone is really interested in you and you sabotage it?” Missy ventures.
Dana furrows her eyebrows. “I don’t do that,” she says, but her tone suggests that she may not believe herself. “I just don’t want to get all caught up in the excitement of a new relationship and not look at things objectively,” she finishes.
“You know,” Missy says helpfully, “that exciting new relationship, not thinking clearly, crazy in love feeling is something most people like, Sis.”
Dana shrugs. “You know me,” she says plainly, “I’m not really one for excitement.”
“I have a sneaking suspicion that Mulder is going to put that to the test,” Missy retorts with a smile, and Dana cringes.
“I think you may be right.”
———
Her demeanor when he picks her up for dinner seems just a bit guarded and is markedly different than it had been when they parted ways last night. He brushes it off, figuring that things between them are still new and awkward, and recognizing that he’s probably coming on just a little too strong.
The day has been grey and cool, and she’s wearing jeans and an oversized blue sweater, her hair pulled half up into a little bun. He smiles warmly at her, but stops short of telling her how amazing she looks, sensing that she might not want to hear it. They make their way to a little Mexican place near her house and she is polite but quiet as they order, munching on chips and salsa with a pensive expression.
“Are you okay?” he asks cautiously, and she nods. “I’m freaking you out, aren’t I?” he adds, and she shakes her head gently, but looks at him with wide eyes from beneath her lashes, and he knows it’s true.
He sits back, running his hands through his hair. “I’m sorry, I don’t want to make you uncomfortable. Is it the sex part or the feelings part?” he questions, and when her eyebrows lift in surprise he suggests “Both?”
She laughs softly and shakes her head. “It’s really not you, Mulder, it’s me. I’m just not very comfortable with the whole,” she swirls her wrist around in the air, “whirlwind feeling, when things are new.”
He leans forward on his elbows and looks at her seriously. “Tell me what you need me to do differently, Scully, and I promise I’ll do it.”
“Maybe just...don’t act as though I hung the moon?” she offers with a pained expression. “I’m just a human person like anyone else, faults and all. It makes me worry that when you really get to know me you won’t like what you find.”
He gives her an amused smirk. “At the risk of further idolizing you, what’s not to like?”
“You want me to write a list?” She asks, returning his smirk, and he gives her a half shrug, half nod. “Well, if I’m basing this on what my family, friends, and past partners might say; I’m very rigid in my thinking on most matters, take myself far too seriously, am emotionally distant much of the time, don’t really know how to have fun and...I cannot carry a tune in a bucket. Basically I’m a total stick in the mud.”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” he says, smiling at her. Her self-consciousness is wildly endearing.
“Okay now you have to go,” she says, picking at her paper napkin.
“Oh, what are my worst qualities?” he clarifies, “Jeez, this could take a while. Um, I’m very singularly focused, as in whatever I’m chasing down at the moment I become completely obsessed with to the detriment of all other things in my life,” he casts her a little glance to confirm that she understands that this is what he’s doing with her, which she does.
“I’m a workaholic, though that’s a lot easier to manage when I’m not all that invested in what I’m working on. I’m terrible with things like birthdays, anniversaries, or generally sentimental things, I just forget them completely. I’m also persistent to a fault, and have a hard time letting things, and people, go, even when I should,” he looks at her again, and she gives him a tight-lipped smile. His worst qualities are the ones that are at risk of scaring her off right now.
“Well then, perhaps,” Scully offers, “I’ll work on not trying to shut you out, and you can work on not trying quite so hard to get in.”
“We’re still talking about feelings here, right?” he jokes, and she rolls her eyes.
“There’s another flaw I forgot, making jokes at completely inappropriate times.”
She smiles at him, with teeth, and he knows they’ll be okay. He needs to be mindful, but he hasn’t totally fucked it up yet.
The rest of their meal goes without incident. He talks about spontaneous human combustion while she calmly explains why it’s medically and scientifically impossible. The way she can disagree with him without talking to him like he’s a lunatic endears to him even further, but he works hard not to let it show. When the waiter comes by and asks about dessert, she shakes her head.
“I have ice cream at home,” she says after the waiter leaves, “saves us five bucks.”
He masks the surprise and delight he feels knowing she’s essentially just invited him back to her apartment, and absolutely does not allow himself to hope that she’ll let him stay the night. It’s a work night after all, and she’s just made clear that she has a tendency towards rules and guidelines; sleepovers on a school night seem like something she’d be against.
Back at her apartment, she gives him a quick tour, having neglected to do so when he was here last week, and he’s impressed though not surprised by how grown up and clean her place is. It matches her personality perfectly, and that makes him like the place immediately.
She opens the freezer and pulls out a pint of ice cream, then retrieves two spoons and hops up on to the counter, which brings them just about face to face height-wise. The cold blast from the open freezer has hardened her nipples and he avoids looking as they pass the pint back and forth, taking alternate bites and talking about their favorite and least favorite flavors. Soon enough, the tub is empty, and she sets it and the two spoons to the side, leaning back against the cupboard behind her. He steps closer into the space between her thighs and places his hands gently on her hips.
“Do you want me to go?” he asks in a neutral tone, not wanting to sound like he’s trying to persuade her.
She quirks her mouth to the side in consideration. “Maybe not just yet,” she says, then hooks her legs around the backs of his thighs and pulls him closer.
He suppresses a victorious smile and instead leans forward to kiss her, simultaneously slipping his hands under the hem of her sweater. She jumps a little at the contact, and he realizes how cold his fingers must be from the ice cream. He pulls his hands free, rubbing them together briskly in the space between their bodies as he continues to kiss her smiling mouth. When he’s satisfied that they are warm, he returns them to her bare sides and she hums in approval. Her hands find the back of his neck, scratching through his hair as his fingers trail their way up the ladder of her rib cage until they meet with the soft underside of her bare breasts. He wants to make mention of the lack of bra, but isn’t sure if calling attention to it would make her self conscious, so he says nothing and just enjoys it. Brushing his thumbs along the seam where chest becomes breast, he moves to kiss down her neck, teasing at the skin behind her ear with the firm tip of his tongue. Finding the spot she seems to like the best, he then runs his thumbs up until they meet with her hardened nipples and she emits a little moan that goes straight to his dick. He stays on this particular combination of rolling her nipples between his thumb and forefinger while licking and kissing her neck until she’s tightening the grip of her legs around his hips, seeking friction. He pushes the fabric of her sweater up slowly enough that she has plenty of time to tell him if she wants to stop, but once her breasts are exposed and his mouth is wrapped around one of her nipples, he is absolutely sure that she doesn’t. She lets her head fall back against the cupboard, breathing hard through her open mouth. He brings the fingers of one hand to the button on her jeans, then pauses.
“Okay?” he asks around the nipple between his lips, and she hums out an “mmmhmmm.”
Flicking the button open and easing the fly down, he slips his hand palm-up under her panties, drifting down through her neatly trimmed hair and into the slick heat of her. She’s deliciously wet, and knowing he caused it makes him feel weak in the knees as he rubs his groin against the edge of the counter, even more turned on than he had been before. He slides his fingers up and down over her swollen lips, his tongue still lapping and sucking at her nipples alternately, and she is panting and quaking beneath him, hips writhing and fingers digging into his neck telling him that she wants more. He circles his dampened thumb around her clit and she whimpers, clutching his head to her chest. His middle finger finds her entrance and swirls around it, not quite entering, and she stills, waiting, anticipating. When he continues with his same teasing movements, she lets out a frustrated breath and speaks.
“Please,” she whispers, her voice pained.
He smiles against her breast, slipping his finger inside, and she moans low and long, throbbing once around him. He experiments with different ways of touching her, inside and out, and soon she’s gasping and breathing raggedly, flexing her hips into his hand, nearly suffocating him with her breast in his mouth and he feels like he’s in heaven.
“Oh god,” she moans, then goes still for a long moment as he feels her walls clench tight around his finger. Then she’s coming, throbbing rhythmically and pulling his face up to kiss her, pouring her blissful moans right into his open mouth and clutching him as close as he can get with one hand in her pants. Finally, she touches his wrist gently and he pulls his hand free, enveloping her fully in his arms as they kiss with just as much passion as they started with.
“That really wasn’t what I had in mind when I suggested ice cream,” she says against his mouth, and he smiles, breaking the kiss.
“So that wasn’t some kind of ‘dessert’ double entendre?” he asks, pulling back slightly and looking at her flushed cheeks and still-dilated pupils.
“No, but I’m not exactly devastated that you interpreted it that way,” she replies with a playful lilt.
“So...what now?” he asks cautiously, neither wanting to overstay his welcome nor do what Frohike delicately calls ‘hit it and quit it.’
She bites her lip and considers the question. “You wanna hang out for a bit and watch TV? I’ll have to kick you out at 9:00, it being a school night and all.”
He feels his mouth stretch into a broad smile at the confirmation of his suspicion that she calls it early on work nights.
“Sounds perfect,” he replies, then steps back so she can jump down from the counter, re-fastening her jeans while casting him a mirthful glance.
They snuggle up on the couch and half-watch whatever is on, but mostly they talk, and kiss, and laugh. He finally asks her about the little gold cross necklace she’s always wearing, and he finds himself further enamored with how complex she is; a woman of science and religion, beautiful and strong, smart and fun. He’s working hard to temper his expression of it, but if he was only ninety-five percent sure he was in love with her when he said it back in August, he is one-hundred-twenty percent sure now.
True to her word, she kicks him out at 9:00 and promises that they will get together for coffee this week once she takes a look at her autopsy schedule and knows which days she’s free.
Once in his car, he drops his head against the back of the seat with a satisfied sigh. All week at work, his colleagues will ask him what he’s smiling about, and he’ll tell them truthfully that he’s just really, really happy.

 JOHN'S POV.
Gerry pats my back as if he just told me I had to work an extra shift, but he is not (Y/M/N), and I can't react casually.
"John?"
He calls, devoid of ceremonies as if we already had this routine, and makes an invitation move for me to join him on the varnished red table, and I do, for the main reason of making him rewind the words.
I walk the walk and take a chair in front of him.
"Can you please repeat what you said?"
I go back to the kitchen, leaving her with the TV for a while. She asked for water, and somehow I can't find cups and can't stop walking in circles around this suffocating kitchen, murmuring the phrase 'Gerry was wrong, he was wrong.' under my breath like a lunatic.
"Are you okay?"
I turn around, and she is leaning against the wall.
"Yeah, yes, yes."
I try to breathe between the repetitions, feeling like I've lost some of the control over myself, and I wasn't myself with her walking around this apartment, haunting me as Gerry did, what caused the expected concerned look on her face for a moment.
"Okay, triple confirmation."
I could feel the hotness in my hands, and with that, the unrequested wetness starting to form.
"I don't function very well in the heat."
She giggles and stupid weather talk saves me for now.
"I will get you the water. I just need to find the cups." I turn around spotting, the earlier invisible cups on the dish rack above the sink. "Right there."
I go to them, with the feeling of stupidity over my shoulders.
"John, can I ask you something?"
                                                                            (Y/N) POV.
He turns the cups up, placing them on the counter slowly, and nods at you before opening the small beige fridge under the dark wooden cabinets. He inclines the torso and grabs a glass jar that seemed too recently filled and not cold enough.
"You and Gerry got pretty close when he was...You know." You breathe in and continue. "Do you know anything about these letters?"
John is pouring the water in the cups, and besides that, he doesn't move a muscle.
"No, I really don't."
Putting the water jar back into the fridge, he then takes a bag of ice out. It makes a cracking sound against the sink, he rips the bag with the help of a knife, looking impatient.
"It is okay if you do. It is not Mark, that's for sure."
You laugh, but he is still quiet while putting the ice cubes on both cups.
The most unusual feeling hits your core, hard, there was no way to miss it, and it is easily discernible.
John hands you the cup with a condescending smile. Your fingers touch slightly; the cold glass refreshes your palm.
"You know. I love Gerry. I'll always will. He was romantic, charming, but awful at poetry. I mean, he had this band back in Ireland, but his friend, Shawn, was to one who wrote all the songs. Writing about his feelings wasn't his thing, I have all the birthday and anniversaries cards to prove it."
You laugh to yourself and watch John start to gulp the water aggressively as you continue the thought.
"I know he told not to get stressed about how the letters were coming, but yesterday I was reading the letters before bed. I realized only some of them have PS: I love you on it, and only some of them have words I know Gerry wouldn't use, ever."
He finishes the liquid in less than a minute, using the back of his hand to wipe his lips while avoiding eye contact, which only made you annoyed.
"John." You called, his eyes shift for a second towards you, blinking twice.
"You can call me crazy, but did you wrote some of the letters?"
                                       JOHN’S POV.
"Listen. I know this is full of good intentions, but someday the letters will stop coming, and when they do, what will she do?"
Gerry reclines on the seat, and for a moment, I let myself get fooled by the idea of putting his mind on the right track.
"I know, but I'm only doing this because I have a reason to take a leap of faith here."
I sigh. My hands were unquiet. I untangle my hair back, feeling an enormous amount of overwhelming frustration.
"And what is that reason?"
"You."
Complete quietness resides between us, although I wanted to say some words back at him, mimicking the same lack of ceremony with which he approaches everything.
"Tell me you're joking."
Gerry smiles, but not at me.
"Good afternoon, guys. What can I get you?"
A John C. Reilly look-alike appears with a notepad on my right.
"Two beers, please." Is Gerry's order.
"I'm not drinking in the middle of the day, dude." I protest, and his eyes roll back.
"I'll have them. If there is a God, he knows how much I need it."
"So, only two beers?" John C. Reilly asks. Gerry's eyes brighten up and squint towards him.
" You look like someone." The waiter heavy sighs and I breathe out, avoiding eye contact with both of them. It is when I noticed through the large windows heavy dark clouds spreading in the sky.
"I will get your order now."
He rushes out, and Gerry laughs, pointing his thumb at the poor man, who was probably disgracing both of us right now.
"I swear to god, can't get his name straight right now." He starts to snap his fingers towards me, like asking for a plus one on his guessing game, and for a moment, I envy how fast he could get adrift from things, that are just not only things but people, (y/n).
"Gerry, can we talk? Actually, talk about this, not get drunk, not get distracted. I know this is hard-."
"You don't, you really don't, unless you are on this seat; You just want to be nice about it, and that is okay. You are the good guy, and you do good things, but sorry if I need a couple of beers to get forward with it. This is not me taking out on the fact that I'm dying. I just need to drink."
He inclines over the table, spreading his hands under his chest. For some odd reason, my mind traces back to the day when (Y/N) appeared at the bar, hyperventilating, throwing the umbrella on the ground, with desperation written all over her face.
It was raining heavily that day, and the news couldn't stop reporting about the flood on the subways stations. I turned the TV off immediately when she burst through the door, falling into (Y/M/N) arms like a child and sobbed aggressively while we tried to figure out what to do. That was the day I knew about Gerry's fate.
"Look. I know what I'm doing sounds in a way, bad for her, but what I'm counting on you to be there because I know-.'' He stops, closing his eyes for a second, suddenly I feel heavy, and still can't anticipate what could be coming from him.
"I know you and her, had a thing before we meet-."
"Oh no, no, no, no-." I cut him straight, wanting to leave, even with the dark clouds threatening to get me on the way, above.
"Shut up, okay, be a grown-up about it and let me finish."
He breaths out.
"I need your help with the letters because you are good at writing and being a poet or whatever you did in college. (Y/N) loves this stuff, and I want the letters to be special, and I want you to be involved in the process, help her to recover. When I'm gone, she is going to need... good people around her, who... loves her."
"Gerry, please."
He ignores me.
"It is going to be her choice in the end, okay? but I only trust you because if you love her enough to see her every day with me and not interfere, then you love her enough to do this. I know I'm twisting the knife, I'm sorry, but she will need you. Of course, she has her mom, who I don't know if it is happy or sad that I'm going to die, and her friends, who will eventually move on, while she is going to feel left behind, she will need someone new, but also someone who knows her, who was always there."
My stomach tosses and turns, and I don't want to trust my senses.
"I thought a long time about this. I can't be selfish; I literally don't have the time. I want (Y/N) to be happy; just see this as a blessing because I rather be you than anyone else, and I have a motive, believe me. Just promise me you will take care of her. Come on! are you denying a dying man his last wish?"

Could you write the first time Mulder and Scully ever drank during movie night? I'm just so curious about how that started since we know it's canon XD I'd love to see your take!
Okay!! This is my FIRST ever prompt, I hope I do it right! I am not exactly Tumblr savvy, more of a Twitter and AO3 gal, but I was given a prompt by @gaycrouton who is quite possibly one of the sweetest people ever and so I am answering the call. I hope you enjoy this story, I had fun writing it. ❤️
Something They Drank
“Beer is okay, right?” Mulder asked Scully as he stood in front of his near empty fridge. “I don’t actually have anything else, well tap water, but …” He looked at her and shrugged. “Sorry.”
“No. Beer is fine. I mean, we’re off duty, on our own time, and God knows this case was enough to drive someone to drink. All those circus folk and the ‘Fiji Mermaid’ hanging about. I’m sure I’ll have nightmares about it for weeks,” Scully sighed, leaning against the door jamb into his kitchen. “As if Tooms wasn’t bad enough. Now I’ll be thinking of that twin somehow possibly either ripping from inside The Conundrum’s body or being slowly digested in his stomach. Either scenario is horrifying.”
Mulder stared at her and shook his head. “Jesus Christ, Scully. Thank you for that disturbing visual,” he shuddered, taking two beers from the fridge, opening them, and handing one to her. “Now I’ll be thinking about that and how I was almost impaled on a bed of actual nails. Skewered is not the way I want to go.” He tipped his beer to her, and they clinked their bottles together.
“So you mentioned a movie on the phone. Which one did you have in mind?” she asked, turning and setting her beer on the table as she shrugged off her coat. Picking up the bottle again, she looked up at him. “Please, no circus, carnival, or overly graphic movies.”
“Oh, overly graphic, Scully? What kind of movie night did you think this was?” he teased her as he stepped closer to her, raising his eyebrows. She rolled her eyes and walked into the living room, his eyes following her, allowing him to look her up and down while she was not aware of it so he was able to avoid the possibility of a slap.
She was wearing jeans. Dana Scully was wearing dark blue jeans, and a soft, periwinkle, purpley colored sweater that he wanted to rub between his fingers. He imagined that it was just as soft against her flesh as the blanket his grandmother used to have. The one that he loved pressing his face against. He figured Scully would not appreciate his face buried in her soft sweater, but a guy could dream. She slipped off her shoes, and he saw a flash of purple on her toenails before she sat cross-legged on the couch.
Oh, God …
Seeing her comfortable like that in his place made him feel a little bolder, and he walked into the room with a bit more swagger than normal. He knew she would not notice a difference, but he felt it and that was what mattered.
The last few days had actually done it too. In her trailer discussing the case, the way she had been sitting at the table felt very … casual and at ease with how they were with one another. Yes, they were discussing Jim-Jim the Dog-Faced Boy, and it had seemed hooky and silly, but the ease at which they just were, was nice.
“So,” he said, setting his beer down on the desk. “Nothing overly graphic … let me just check what’s in the VCR. Oh … no that’s … I’ll just save that for later.” He put the Hot Space Babes video over to the side, his cheeks flushed as he knew this particular one featured a red headed scientist who resembled Scully. Resembled her a lot.
“Just adding it to the other ones that aren’t yours?” she teased as she cleared her throat. He looked back at her and she smiled. God, she was so beautiful.
“Something like that yeah,” he answered and went back to searching for an acceptable movie to watch with his partner that did not feature big breasted women moaning.
“Ah! Got it!” he said triumphantly and put the movie in the VCR. He picked up his beer and sat down next to her as he reached for the remote, fast forwarding to the movie.
“The Princess Bride? Really?” she asked incredulously.
“Do you not like this movie?” he asked, looking from her to the screen and back again.
“No, no, I do. In fact it’s … one of my favorites,” she said quietly, her cheeks slightly flushed.
“Ahh. Cary Elwes takes another heart I see,” he pouted, and she laughed. He watched her and smiled, enjoying the sound of her happiness. It was few and far between that he got to hear it.
“Not Cary Elwes, exactly,” she said, taking a drink of her beer and looking at him. “I suppose, it’s more the character and just the general romance of it all.” At his raised eyebrows, she laughed nervously and glanced down at her lap. “Westley was in love with Buttercup for years. He never said it outright, but he showed her, every day. He … he took care of her, took her bossing him about, and always with his ‘as you wish.’” She lifted her head and smiled as that part of the movie started. Taking another drink, she remained quiet as she watched.
He watched her watch the movie, smiling and laughing as she drank her beer until it was down to the last few drops. She seemed surprised to find it empty so quickly, and he stood up, intent on getting her another one, wanting to keep the conversation going.
“Mulder, I’m fine, I don’t need another one,” she called, her tone holding a hint of embarrassment.
“Nonsense, I need another myself,” he said, grabbing two, knowing full well his was more than half full. Can’t let her drink alone, he thought as he popped them open.
Walking back in the room he saw Westley leaving, and he heard Scully sigh as he handed her her beer. He sat down beside her, put his new drink on the desk, and picked up his old one.
“Thank you,” she said quietly, holding the bottle in her hands and sighing again. “See, it’s not that he loves her so deeply, which he does and we can obviously and plainly see it, it’s … it’s that he feels he needs to be worthy of her. He leaves her to prove his worth, to … secure a future for her, for them, and that alone is so romantic.” She took a drink and sighed again. “She didn’t … it wasn’t necessary, at least I don’t think it was, for him to leave to have money for marriage. She lived on the farm there, she wasn’t a noble or fancy woman. What did he need money for?” Mulder shrugged and put his chin on his hand as he looked at her as she explained her thoughts on the movie. She took a long drink and then sighed once more.
“She loved him so much, Mulder,”she said quietly. “You could hear it in her goodbye, see it in the fact that she mourned his believed death for five years. She was lost without him, but that didn’t mean she was less of who she was, her heart was just missing it’s other half.” She scoffingly laughed, and he raised his eyebrows again. Glancing at him, she shook her head. “Ah, I’ll be quiet now, and we can watch the movie.”
“Scully, I know this movie by heart, I don’t need to watch it,” he said, catching her eye, she nodded and took another drink of her beer. “I am interested in what you think of it, though. So please, continue.” He smiled and she uncrossed her legs and put her feet on the coffee table.
Her bare, purple toenails painted, feet.
They were so small. It always astounded him that someone with such a large presence could be so tiny. Suddenly, some very unpartnerlike thoughts began to swirl around in his brain and he drug his eyes from her feet to avoid them.
“Can … can you rewind it?” she asked timidly and he grinned. Picking up the remote, he rewound it until she told him to stop, in a spot he would have stopped at anyway even if she had not requested it. He knew, because of course he did, the exact spot she wanted to see again. Westley was leaving and Buttercup was crying as she held him …
“I’m afraid I'll never see you again …”
“Of course you will.”
“But what if something happens to you?”
“Hear this now, I will always come for you.”
“But how can you be sure?”
“This is true love. You think this happens every day?”
“That, Mulder. That’s what I love about this movie. People can scoff or roll their eyes, saying it’s sappy romance, but …” she sighed and smiled. “He leaves and then she believes that he dies, but of course he doesn’t. But, when he returns … it’s been five years, and he hears she’s marrying the horrible prince. He can’t believe she would, but does she still love him, Westley? He needs to know if it’s as real a true love as he believed it to be, so he keeps his identity known from her, holds himself back until he knows for absolute certainty.”
“When she shoves him down the hill, and he’s forced to tell her as he’s basically falling to his death? Her poor sweet Westley …” Mulder said, shaking his head. She laughed and then looked at him seriously.
“But, Mulder, he needed to be sure,” holding his gaze, she swallowed. “She believed him dead, had mourned and ached for him. Though her heart was broken, she carried on. She had to. If he had returned, walked up to that farm, she would have been overjoyed. But so much time had passed, he wasn’t sure she could still possibly love him the same way. They were … things were different and he … But when he did know, when he was completely sure … that was it. Nothing could tear them apart again, not even the fire swamp.” She smiled softly at him, and he felt like she was someone he had just met. How had he not seen this romantic side to her before? How had he not recognized it in her?
“He had been mostly dead, Mulder, and still he came for her,” she whispered, staring at him. He held her gaze and judging by the fact that his first drink was still more than half full, he knew it was not the alcohol making him flush. “True love doesn’t come along every day.” She shrugged with a small smile, and he exhaled a breath he was not aware he had been holding.
“Wow, these must be some new kind of beers that contain truth serum or something,” she laughed nervously, peering into her bottle, and recrossing her feet. He took a long pull from his bottle, needing time to think of what to say. Nothing smartass-y, it needed to be genuine. He wiped his mouth and looked at her.
“I’ve watched this movie many times, Scully, and never viewed it as eloquently as you just explained. I always thought he should have told her right away and let her know it was him, not lead her on or tease her, but I do understand what you’re saying,” he said quietly. “He was scared and uncertain, her love hadn’t dulled or changed, nor had his … but a shift had taken place. He just needed to …”
“Be pushed down a hill?” she asked with a smirk.
“Sometimes, we men need that,” he laughed, and she nodded. “We need that push to tell us we’re being idiots.” He glanced at the movie again, finding he had lost track of where they were, something that had never happened to him before when he turned on this movie.
“I think it’s a lot more than sometimes,” she said, and he looked back at her. She took a drink and smiled sideways at him. He smiled back and nodded.
“Should we start over? Or is from here okay?” She shrugged, and he leaned back, finishing off his first beer and reaching for the other one. Scully got up, and he heard the fridge door opening and closing, then two bottle caps falling on the counter. She walked back in and handed him his next one as she settled down with her last one.
Her bare feet were on the coffee table again and he found them just as intriguing and enjoyable as the rest of the movie, which took them over three hours to finish. It was paused and rewound, laughed over and then certain parts were watched again.
After Scully left and he cleaned up the bottles and caps, he made a vow to always have some type of alcohol on hand for future movie nights. He liked hearing from her, and if it took a little liquid courage to loosen her tongue, he wanted it there for her.
He turned out the lights, laid down on the couch, and thought of her purple painted toenails. Smiling, he turned onto his side, determined to discover what the next color choice would be. Hopefully, he would at the next movie night.
Maybe next time he should bring some whiskey. Just in case …

“And I like the way you hurt inside; always waiting for the worst to get me by. And I like the way you hurt. After all you’ve done, look what I’ve become.” - Hurt [Get Scared]
Tumblr media
Jung Hoseok was a cheerful man.
There wasn’t any day passed when he wasn’t smiling, or screaming in pure excitement. Sure, there were moments where he acted all mischievous and the like, but most of the time he was joyful.
Almost as if he had no worries.
This trait was what attracted you to him in the first place. Not only that, but he was also optimistic. He lent you a shoulder to cry on, giving you a piece of wise advice and listened to your problems without any judgments. At the end of your ranting and cries, he always cracked a joke or pull some harmless pranks on to your other friends. Anything to make sure you didn't go to sleep sad.
He was so caring. The perfect boyfriend anyone could ever ask for.
Of course, that doesn’t mean he never experienced anger. He had, though, just like any other humans in this world. But it was rare, and the probability was small either. His friends could count on with one hand the times where he was truly mad, or at least, the small signs. Because despite his expressive nature, he possessed enormous self-control. The reason had to be very painful; severe enough to actually ignite his ire.
And an angry Hoseok was an intimidating Hoseok.
You squeezed your eyes shut, trying to erase the gory image from your brain. But it was a pointless attempt because how could you forget something that happened right in front of your eyes? And the fact that the culprit was none other than your lover himself, Jung Hoseok, made it all the more indelible.
You had never expected your sweet, ‘sunshine’ of a man to be capable of such violent act. The man that claimed to be hope; your hope.
Little did he know that your hope had long gone down the drain the moment he took a whip from the closet.
Then again, love blinds people from any logic. Even the most affectionate ones.
You had been bounded in this chair for God knows how long. Your muscles were stiff, and the rope chafed your sensitive skin. It might be bleeding, who knows. But you knew that it was nothing compared to what your brother suffered right now.
Hoseok cracked his whip against your brother’s raw back. Another scream followed shortly; a heartrending wail that pierced through the night sky. You winced, a waterfall of tears streamed down your flushing cheeks. No matter how many times you’d heard it, you could never get used to that grievous sound. Nor could you bring yourself to stop crying when your brother was laying on his stomach – chained in the bed you shared with Hoseok – bare-chested and full of injuries.
It all happened too fast; one minute you were heading to the kitchen to prepare some food for him, and the next you woke up in your dark room with a terrible headache.
Hoseok put down the whip at last – you'd lost count on how many times he used that on to your dear sibling – and slowly turned to face you. You squirmed in your seat, trying to free yourself but to no avail. Hoseok was advancing towards you, and you had never begged him to leave you alone so loud in your life. His stride was slow and deliberate; meant to intimidate you and consume your entire being with an unadulterated fear.
And he succeeded. Of course, he did. You had never seen this side before, and now you wished you could rewind the time.
The tremor in your body was palpable, bringing forth cold sweats that poured from the pores. They trickled down to his palm that settled itself under your chin, dragging your face close to his. His minty breath – something that you used to love – felt like a freezing wind during winter. It brushed against your wet cheeks as if wanting to freeze the tears midway.
He was close. Too close. You felt almost claustrophobic with the proximity. It was like being stuck in an elevator - with your enemy - for hours. Except you didn't know how long you'd been staying here. All you knew was that it was night, and Hoseok still wearing his work clothes. A red checkered shirt with its buttons opened, revealing his dark tank top underneath, black pants, and white snickers. It was an outfit that you had chosen yourself because he could be clingy and wanted to know your preferences in male clothing.
Even though he already knew it, unbeknownst to you.
“Who do you love the most?”
Ah, there it was. The dreaded question. The first yet portentous inquiry he’d spoken after hours of intense torture and unremitting pain.
It was unfair how he could easily ask that without thinking about the dilemma that weighted your mind. You loved Hoseok – you truly did – but he had become such an overwhelming figure in your life. Always hovering over you whilst shooting a cautious look to your friends as if they would steal you away from him. You had reassured him countless times before, that you were loyal to him and would never leave him for anyone. But Hoseok still retained his wary and overprotective traits because deep inside, he feared that you would change your mind and choose somebody else instead.
Women are fickle creatures, after all. And it’s only natural for a man to protect his mate.
          “I...”
What would you say? It’s not like you could choose who to love between a sibling or a lover. Both of them were kind to you, instilling warmth and love into your otherwise dull life. There was no bad blood; no family feud like those in dramas. They were supportive of your relationship with Hoseok, naively believing the mask of a doting and devoted boyfriend. And you, too, had fallen victim to it.
The cliché quote said ‘nobody’s perfect’. And yet, you were still beguiled by that so-called perfection.
But why? Why did he do this to him, to you? What could he possibly gain from this? Some kind of sick amusement? Satisfaction? Validation?
“Why...? Why are you doing this?” you sobbed, peering up through your wet lashes to look at his unusually hollow eyes. It scared you because they used to glitter with mirth. And now, it almost seemed as if you were looking to a doll. “Answer me, goddammit-!”
A hand clasped your mouth, preventing you from fully expressing your desperation and curses. You wanted to bite his palm for rudely cutting you off, but the fear of punishment forced you to stay put. Hoseok leaned forward, almost closing the suffocating space between the two of you. It could’ve been romantic had he didn’t look so cold yet empty.
          “You want to know why?”
His voice was eerily calm despite the mocking tone. It terrified you; to see him act so cool because you couldn’t predict when and how he would lose his temper. You used to have this naïve thought that he might be one of those ‘violent and rampaging’ type, and while the former could be proved as accurate, the latter was clearly debatable.
With his hand still attached to your mouth, you merely nodded in response.
“It’s because you want to leave me.”
Your eyes widened, both from shock and rage. How dare he accused you of something you hadn’t done. Hoseok might not be what you had thought about, but you never planned on leaving him. Unless-
“You think I’m accusing you.” It was scary how he knew you so well until he could correctly predict what you were thinking about. You supposed that you should be flattered with the fact that he had taken the time to understand you – your flaws and all – but this just proved to you of how deep his love was.
How long he had been watching you without your knowledge.
“I’m right, aren’t I?” He narrowed his eyes, and you suddenly felt very small. Like a frightened deer in front of a fierce yet calculating cheetah because he could – and would – chase you to the end of the earth if necessary. “You have been meeting with your brother under the excuse of meeting your old friend. Oh, what was their name again? Seojoon?”
          You gulped silently.
“There has never been a friend named Seojoon in your life, but I applaud you for your intricate lie in coming up with their background. Very believable, indeed. I almost fell for it.” He huffed out a derisive chuckle. “But you see, you can only keep up a lie for so long until it comes back to bite at you. And you have been found guilty.”
He continued, “I’m not stupid enough to let you go outside without my supervision, [Name]. Especially when you met the one person that should be the most supportive of us.”
Of course. Of course. How could you think that for one fucking second, you were free? That you could finally do anything and meet anyone you want? No, because the moment you accepted his confession, was when you gave him the reign to own you. To possess you as if you were some kind of a doll. A puppet to be controlled.
How fucking stupid could you be, [Name]?!
“But, no. Instead, he backstabbed me – us – by spouting out nonsense about how I’m not good enough for you and that I’m too possessive. Bullshit!” You flinched when he suddenly slammed his other hand against the table. “Your brother’s a fucking hypocrite, [Name]! How can you be so blind?! He’s trying to ruin our relationship!”
Hoseok finally released his palm before he could risk suffocating you any further and paced around the room in frustration. “And I can’t let that happen. No, no, no. I won’t.” He dashed towards you with surprising speed and grabbed your face. “You belong to me, remember? Forever and ever. We’re gonna marry someday and then we move out to another country or something. Far away from here, because this place’s not safe anymore.”
A manic smile slowly contorted his face when he noticed your trembling body. “Aw, why are you shaking? Are you scared?” he cooed, and you didn’t know whether he was taunting you or not. All you cared about was how you could burn this memory forever. “Don't worry, I’ll never hurt my darling. These are just the proofs of my love. ‘Cause we can’t have anyone to destroy something that we’ve built for so long, can we?”
Another tear slipped from your eyelids at the implication. Hoseok wiped them away with a stroke and smiled softly. You sobbed harder, chest constricted at the bitter nostalgia. The sight in front of you reminded you so much of his usual behavior.
The times where you were blissfully oblivious to his violent side. The times where he took you out on a spontaneous date and whisper some cheesy things reserved for your ears only. The times where he wasn't so crazy with you. Maybe he had, though. You just didn't know it. Yet. But you did now.
Where did all those beautiful memories go?
          “I love you, [Name].”

Where it all Began
OK, so I’ve created an Instagram account dedicated to showing the world what it’s like to be me. Might as well link a blog to it, amirite?
Why does that matter?
Now what?
What are you even going to be talking about, Katie?
Some questions that might be buzzing around your head, I know.
We all kind of walk through this world doing what we do every day. And maybe some of us find that significant, but maybe some of us don’t. If you see yourself as “just a student”, or “just a person in an entry-level, coordinator position, or “just trying to get by”, I promise you that means something.
About four months ago I made a move that changed my life so profoundly it has quite literally shaken me down to my core and showed me who I am, what I’m made of. But let’s rewind to just before that all happened.
I’m sitting on the couch of a family I nanny for in what felt like the middle-of-nowhere-Indiana. It’s just about 1:00 pm, the baby is asleep and I’m watching The Walking Dead. My tortured relationship has just come to a complete end (you’ll hear about him later, I promise), my roommate hates me (you’ll hear about her too, don’t worry), all of my college friends have moved to places like Seattle, and Chicago and I’m so sad I can’t even cry. I’m stuck in the cement that I’ve let set around me blankly staring at my MacBook Air as character after character dies and I. Feel. Nothing. I was supposed to have a skype interview with a company in New York but I consciously decide to skip it. “I forgot, I’m sorry, can we reschedule? No? Ok, thank you for the opportunity.” I can hear the script I’m writing for the email scene I’m about to direct. And that’s when my phone rings...
“Hi, is this, Katie?”
“Yes, this is she.”
“Hi Katie, this is Alex. I’m calling on the behalf of Agency. We were supposed to have a Skype call at 1:00.”
“Oh, yes, I’m sorry my internet isn’t working properly. I’m so glad you called...”
A little bit different than the original script I was writing, but I went with it.
Fast forward four months, and here I am; writing to you from my desk at that job in New York *shhhh* to tell you about why I need to talk to you; why I feel my story is important to tell, as is yours. I left that couch, bad relationship, horrible roommate situation, town one month later and I can quite literally say that I never once looked in my rearview mirror as I drove far, far away from that place in the midwest to a new one in Upstate New York.
And that’s when my life became perfect! The End...
I wish that was how it went. But everyone knows that putting distance between yourself and the problem(s) isn’t always the answer. Things follow you and more often than not, it’s time that we need. I really, truly, vigorously believed that leaving all of those people and memories and that place behind was the cure-all to this disease that, I thought, was my anxiety and depression (queue post for later about what I actually had going on in my cute little brain). I also thought I loved change! I was ready for it because change is always a 100% guaranteed breath of fresh air.
Wrong.
Not only was distance not a cure-all, it was isolating and the change was so vast and challenging, I wasn’t sure I could handle it.
My mother and I aren’t close. I remember smelling her nightshirt when I was little, trying to absorb something from her. Looking back I’m not sure what that was, really. Maybe it was whatever kindness she had left in her after my dad left or a smile. Her smell was always floral but sweet and I needed it to put me to sleep. There was a time when I found her, her scent, comforting. But as I got older I began to appreciate that less and eventually not want it at all. Our lack of a relationship isn’t entirely her fault. I recognize that I’m my own, closed off person, afraid to get to know the woman who brought me into this world. But after the transition to the North Country, I called her almost every day like I was five and I needed to smell her nightshirt to be able to rest. I cried that I’d never make friends here (shout-out to the wonderful humans who have taken me in and now call me their friend). I thought the midwest was desolate, but really I didn’t even know what desolate was until moving here. The midwest was a friend I’d become too familiar with and bored of. It was a place I took for granted and only saw the times I’d had my heart broken or falling outs with close friends or dropping out of college after four years of half-hearted-hard-work. But the North Country was an alien from a galaxy I’d never even heard of and couldn’t communicate with or relate to. I’d forcefully thrown myself at it only to realize it looked nothing like what I’d loved and known for so long.
For the first several months, I found no comfort here. The job was harder than anticipated and most of my coworkers, for lack of a better word, sucked. The agency was at the forefront of a rebrand and I’d come in at the worst, most disjointed time in their 41-year history as a company. So, not only was the job not panning out but like I said, I truly had no friends. It was sub-zero, constantly snowing, dark by 4:30 pm and I was beginning to resent the reason I’d come here in the first place; to get away from things that pained me. I drove to and from work in pitch black, every day. I love being outdoors, but I’d never been winter hiking and had no proper gear to get out there and no money to buy said gear. Everything was a mess of pure and hopeful expectations collapsing in on me and whether I created it or not, I felt I had no control over the clean-up.
But somehow, dirty clothes found their way into my hamper and friends were made, gear was purchased, work settled down. And now, today, I feel like I’ve finally gotten a grasp on my new life. It feels weird to write that down... “my new life”. But how I’m living now looks nothing like what it used to so I guess it really is “new”.
I’m taking canoe trips and becoming more active and going to therapy once a week. I had such a rough go for those few months, and so many things to sort out. Through therapy and some much-needed soul-searching, the only conclusion I’ve come to is that I need to take care of myself and SLOW DOWN (As my girl, Kacey Musgraves says, “I’m all right with a slow burn.” That’s kind of been my theme song for the last few months). Take that job, be patient with myself in adjusting, say yes to more experiences, but learn to say no when it’s just too much, do what benefits me. Sounds selfish, I know, but I’ve always given so much of myself to others and left none for myself. And I’m tired of feeling empty with nothing left to give to the most important person in my life; me. You might be thinking, “damn, she’s really taking this selfish thing seriously”. And that’s because I am. Going out with coworkers on a Tuesday might be fun, and I might be missing out on a few laughs, BUT going home to work out, and cook dinner and relax before another day of work is mindful and soothing and it’s what I need to feel like my best self. Learning to say no to things I feel I’m missing out on has been quite the process, but I’ve never felt empty or depleted doing it.
So to answer the questions I think might be buzzing around in your head...
1. This matters because I feel all stories are important and deserve to be told. It’s also part of my emotional wellness and healing. I went to school for writing and though I’m in a position in my professional life where I write content, I’m not writing anything I truly feel could change anything. Even if this doesn’t change your life, it will change mine (there I go learning to be all selfish again).
2. And now, I tell you how I try to stay sane, try being the keyword. There are days I still am so sad I can’t cry. And there are still days in which I miss that toxic relationship, distressed couch, and abusive roommate. But there are more days now than there ever were of fun mistakes and happy adventures. I guess when they say the only direction there is to go from rock-bottom is up, they’re not lying.
3. I’m talking about emotional wellness! A combination of therapy, guided meditation, exercise and *mostly* clean eating does it for me, and I’m curious to know what does it for you. I’m talking about being raw and open and honest with oneself, admitting to your mistakes, and honoring your flaws. I’m talking about obtaining contentment. People strive for happiness but really feeling happy isn’t something we’re meant to feel in our normal state. Happy, elated, excited are all things that take us higher, far above the level of contentment. Contentment is where I strive to be. Contentment is where I feel warm and secure and like I’m ready to take on whatever life throws at me because I can; because I’m standing on a solid foundation of neutrality that I’ve built with my own, small, chubby baby hands.
So... if any of this interests you, stick around and read a while. Also, check out get.well.soonish on Instagram to put a face to the name cause it’s a pretty good one ;).

RE: Paranormal / Ghost Hunting Software
From: Dennis A. Batchelor
Dear Ghost Hunting Enthusiast,
he Biggest problem I’ve found in my 30+ years of doing Paranormal Investigations and Ghost Hunting has always been keeping track of my equipment and safely storing the information I’ve gathered while doing an investigation.
Rather the information was from a personal interview or background history of the location it was always a major task not to lose or misplace my notes, not to mention how and where to store my EVP’s and photographs without having 20 piles of stuff lying around waiting to be lost.
When I became founder of my own investigative team the problem’s only got bigger. I  found the need to keep track of all the equipment, which over time began to be more and more difficult as my collection of tool, equipment and gadgets continued to grow and still does to this day.
I discovered that as my team began to grow I needed to have instant access to their personal info such as address, phone and email. Just as important, I needed  to be able to know what types equipment they’ve used and how many investigation they were part of.
When our team was small, it was easy to drop a couple emails to get information out to the team… But as we grew, sending email became a greater task as well. I thought to myself… how nice it would be if I could email everyone all at once with 1 click of a button.
But by far the BIGGEST Challenge was after collecting all the background information, doing all the interviews, noting information found during a preliminary investigation, gathering hours upon hour of information and data during the investigation, then reviewing the evidence ….
How could I put all this together in to one neat, professional looking package to give to the client?
” What If …”  I had Paranormal Software that would…….

Pure White Noise White Noise is a signal (or process) with a flat frequency spectrum. In other words, normal background noises can be neutralized so that any suspected paranormal voices or sounds will  then have a higher bandwidth and they become the centre frequency.
EVP’s is today one of the most fascinating areas of paranormal research.
Human-sounding voices from unknown origin are recorded on such electronic media as analog tape recorders, digital voice recorders, video recorders and other devices. Strangely, the voices are not heard at the time of the recording; it is only when the recording is played back that the voices are heard.
With the help of the White Noise CD you will be able to hear on your digital recorder the spirits respond, answer questions, even ask questions of their own.
Numerous ghost hunters, paranormal investigators and ghost enthusiasts have used White Noise like this to aid them on their paranormal investigations. This White Noise is a must have for paranormal investigations. The White Noise runs approximately 60 minutes.
This recording contains 100% genuine white noise, the best quality white noise you can get. There are “white noise generators”, which sell for a lot more, that are usually frequency-biased in their attempt to simulate white noise.
60 minutes of frequency-neutral and non-repetitive white noise. Don’t take any chances!
Get the “cleanest” white noise there is. Sound frequency  that contains every frequency from 0 Hz to 22,050 Hz (22.05 kHz) at equal power, with absolutely no distortion or repetitiveness, in stereo. This is as good as white noise gets!
If you want to begin introducing White Noise into your next investigation.
You’ll receive a 60 minute MP3 recording as a bonus, that you can download to your computer, burn to a CD and play it on sight at your next investigation.
Food For Thought, Think About This…
Are you tired of losing pieces of important information gathered before, during and after investigations?
Have you ever waste time trying to find information from a previous investigation?
Have you spent hours compiling a report for your client and think to yourself…There has to be a better way?
Would you like to contact all your team members with one click of a button?
Do you want to look professional ?
Then what are you waiting for?
The PLAN can help solve all these problems and offers so many more benefits in tracking your entire investigation from start to finish.
It will save you hours in allowing you to keep personal profiles on each of your investigators, keeping tabs on your expensive equipment and not to mentions neatly storing all the data including EVP’s and Photos in one complete file for easy and quick access for future reference.
And best of all you give your client a Professional complete report that will only add to your organizations credibility.
Not only that you’ll receive the White Noise CD.
White noise
neutralizes background noise and is believed to assist you so that any suspected paranormal voices can be heard more clearly as it’s frequency is above that of static or normal noise in a given area.
And you also get the ” Ghost Weather Station”   This comes in handy if you need to record the current conditions for your Paranormal Investigation report. So what’s all this worth ?

  Batman and the Signal #1
After years of teasing and buildup, Duke Thomas finally has a suit and a codename. As the Signal, he protects Gotham during the day, when the Bats are all sleeping. Besides being the only non-nocturnal member of the Bat-family, he’s also the first with powers, albeit, powers he doesn’t quite understand. He can “read” light, and is able to reconstruct images of where it’s been and where it’s going. Essentially, he has the ability to rewind and fast-forward his perception.
His first assignment, given to him by Batman, is to investigate the recent spree of metahuman teenagers – like Duke – popping up in Gotham. But even with his training under Batman, there’s no guarantee he’ll even survive his first day.
Duke Thomas has always been a breath of fresh air to the recent Batman mythos. For one, he’s not a dark haired white guy. (I know Todd was blond at one point; and also wish that Damian was more often depicted as half-Asian, but he’s not.) He’s also been a bit of a perpetual outsider; someone a distance removed from the Bats and Robins. So it makes sense to give him an entire 12 hours to himself, to become his own type of hero. He’s also got his own crew, the former members of We Are Robin, whom he’s let into his superhero life. In one issue, he’s already showing how he’s doing things his own way.
On the art side of things, Hammer and Martin are showing us a side of Gotham we don’t often see; what it looks like during the day. But also, Duke takes them into the streets more than the rooftops. Being a daytime hero means more groundwork, and also running into more people as they go through their daily routines. Despite what we usually see of the city, during the day, Gotham can be surprisingly bright and spacious. And the modern style of the new Wayne-funded developments even give the city a few shades of Metropolis. The brightness continues through Duke’s costume, which takes the yellow highlights found in Batman and the Robin’s costumes, and makes it the primary color. Eventually, even his black chestpiece is replaced with a more reflective material, bouncing the light back rather than absorbing it.
Between the half dozen Batman books DC has running at any given time, it’s easy to feel overexposed by Gotham city. Turns out all you need to make it feel new again is let the sunshine in.
  Batman: White Knight #4
Jack continues with his plan to take over Gotham – nicely – announcing his run for city councilman; and turning his campaign launch into a PR stunt when he gets Batman and Gordon to interrupt and arrest him for no reason. Blackport is already overwhelmingly in favor of Jack, and the rest of Gotham is slowly turning. Even Gordon is convinced by Jack’s plan to use the Batman fund to instead fund a new team of super-cops; and Jack hopes that Gordon can convince Batgirl and Nightwing to turn as well.
Meanwhile, Neo-Joker leads the mind-controlled villains on a raid of Gotham PD headquarters to steal files and find a way for her to reawaken Joker. She also tells Mad Hatter how she came to meet, and fall for, the supervillain.
But, for my money, the most interesting development is that Harley senses that somewhere along the line, Jack legitimately turned his plan to get revenge on Batman and the GCPD into a way to save and improve Gotham. And if anyone would know, it would be her, the person who knows him best, and a professional psychologist. Maybe the Joker really is dead.
And, of course, Batman keeps playing right into Jack’s hands – almost causing a riot at his campaign launch, and pushing Gordon away by refusing to listen to a plan that could help them both. If Bruce still has a chance at saving his own hind, he’s letting it slip past him awfully quickly.
SGM is really out-doing himself with the art in this series too, and can switch things from the sweetness of Jack and Harley spending a night out together, to the brutality of this Batman’s ways of taking out criminals, and the pathos of Neo-Joker’s backstory. Plus, there’s a garage full of the GCPD’s idea of what their Batmobiles should be like, and if there’s one thing he goes all out on – it’s cars.
  Batman #38
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, although, I can assure you you haven’t. One rich kid, two murdered parents, a butler, a desire for vengeance. But this isn’t Bruce Wayne. It’s Matthew, the son of a couple who worked on Wayne’s board. As Bruce, he assures Matthew that the person behind the murders will be caught, and that he’ll be taken care of. As Batman, he investigates. The first suspect is Zsasz. Shortly after this discovery, Zsasz’s parents are found dead in their home. But Zsasz didn’t do it. Then, another couple is killed.
Coming off the perfectly delightful Superfriends two-parter, King reminds us he can also write twisted noir Batman with this one-shot story that’s a twist, not just of the Batman origin story, but of all the twists on the Batman origin to come before it. It also plays into King’s larger arc of Bruce Wayne trying to heal past the trauma that’s defined him. Just because Matthew is very much like Bruce Wayne, and looks up to Bruce Wayne, does not make him Bruce Wayne, nor any of the Robins or other heroes with similar backstories. Sometimes, tragedy doesn’t result in heroes.
And, despite the darkness of this issue in particular, King still finds places to inject humor. The clues Batman ends up following to solve the mystery, down to his final deduction, could’ve come straight from the Adam West show – just add blood.
  Justice League #36
Following the opening of a congressional investigation into the Justice League, the chairwoman leading the investigation is assassinated by a Batman doppelganger. The next day, the public pressure from the investigation and assassination, as well as personal agendas not lining up with the team’s charter, further increases fissures in team cohesion as they try to prevent another international incident involving a nuclear sub in Chinese waters.
I can’t remember the last comic book to make me so stressed. If Priest succeeds in one thing this issue, it’s selling how stressed everyone in the League is at the moment. Aquaman’s balancing being part of the League with being the King of his people; Wonder Woman is starting to think that Batman’s rules are interfering with her mission of peace; Superman’s being called to testify at congressional hearings; Simon feels that the League’s charter is preventing him from saving lives; and Batman’s gotta somehow heard all these cats while also dealing with a doppleganger using his example to kill people. It’s a lot to deal with, and adding to all of it, the public ain’t the biggest fan of vigilantism right now.
I’m also really enjoying Wood’s art on this series. It’s bold and colorful, unabashedly heroic, almost to prove by aesthetics alone how necessary the League is in spite of the public’s doubts. On the other hand, he perfectly captures the stress in every heroes face as they deal with each-other and other mounting stressors. They’re larger than life, but also relatably human – a very fine line that he nonetheless walks.
  Green Arrow #38
Another Ferreyra illustrated issue, hell yeah! I don’t think I get this excited over any other artist. He kills it every issue he’s on. This one included. From Dinah kneeing Ollie in the balls, to a sunset on the beach, to an underground fight; he does it all with style and personality.
After Dinah and Henry rescue Ollie from the trench in the Pacific ocean Moira abandoned him in, Ollie has to make things up to Dinah for almost getting himself killed in the pursuit of money. Meanwhile, Moira resurfaces and reconnects with Malcolm Merlyn, and together, hope to pay back her debt to the Ninth Circle. Unfortunately for them, they’ve decided they’re already settled.
How else could this issue end but a three way fight between team Arrow, Moira and Malcolm, and the assassin the Ninth Circle sent to collect their debt? Well, many ways; but none as satisfying.
  Black Bolt #9
Black Bolt and Blinky visit Titania to tell her that her husband is dead. And then the three of them hold a funeral for Crusher Creel. It starts with a toast at his local watering hole, and ends with a visit from Captain America and Odinson, who come to pay their respects to a worthy adversary who died a hero’s death.
This issue got to me. I’m no bastion of emotional fortitude or nothing, but, because of everything leading up to this, this death meant something, and Crusher’s funeral means something too. Within the pages of this story, Crusher found love and redemption. That his funeral drew heroes and villains alike says that his life mattered because in the end, he chose to give his own for someone else’s. It’s a simple story, but a powerful one. We’re all loved. We all matter. No matter where we come from, we can all choose to be heroic. And that will matter too.
  Hawkeye #14
Kate remains captured by Eden, who gives her a moment with her mother to convince her to turn her back on Clint.
Meanwhile, Clint and Kate’s friends make a plan to find where Eden took Kate, and save her. The plan Clint comes up with after finding out where Eden and Kate are? Kidnap Madame Masque, who’s still in a Kate clone body, and pull the ol’ switcharoo on Eden. Like most of Clint’s plans, he hasn’t thought this one entirely through.
This is mainly a Clint issue, and it’s great how Thompson continues the tradition of writing Clint as an almost utter fuckup, but importantly, a likable fuckup who always tries his best.
Rise of the Black Panther #1
This series, which serves as a retelling of T’Challa’s origins and early years as Black Panther, has two Black Panther’s in it, neither of whom are T’Challa. The book begins with his grandfather Azzuri meeting Captain America and the two working together to defend Wakanda from Hydra; then follows the reign of T’Chaka, as told by his first wife, and T’Challa’s mother, N’Yami. Together, the story tells of two kings who broke tradition for the betterment of Wakanda. Azzuri gave vibranium to an outsider so that he could use it to save the world; and T’Chaka made a common woman his Queen, and gave her the resources she needed to study vibranium and develop new technologies from it. But, it is also a story of Wakanda being pulled onto the world stage as it is attacked by outsiders for the first time. Wakanda is able to repel them, but always at a cost.
This first issue does a great job at establishing the legacy that T’Challa inherits from his forefathers; a legacy of a recently unified country just beginning to expand past its history of secrecy. It presents T’Challa inheriting a country at the height of its power, but also, at its most vulnerable. It also establishes that whatever T’Challa does, he’s following in the footsteps of imperfect men. This issue ends with the stakes being that T’Challa has to be a Black Panther unlike any Wakanda has ever known. The next ones will have to tell us how he begins to become that.
  Paper Girls #19
The Girls, and Chris, decide to find old!Tiff before she gets smushed by the giant robots, and when we meet old!Tiff, she has a run in of her own with some future-folk. And through the whole issue, including the Girls and Chris finding old!Tiff and going to a church for safety, Mac doth protest KJ’s lesbianism way too much, to the point where her edginess begins irking the other characters.
Like pretty much every issue this arc, this one moves quickly, ending almost before you know it. And, a lot of this issue is characters playing catch-up with one another as they go over that Tiff is married to Chris, Tiff can see the fighting robots, and time-war. Like, it makes sense in-universe that the characters have to re-explain everything to the people who weren’t there for the initial exposition, but being that we the audience presumably know most of this, it stalls the issue and the overall story a bit too much.
Crosswind #6
Cason and Juniper finally meet in Seattle and prepare to defend themselves and each-other’s friends and families from the gang coming to kill them all.
Like all great finales, this is an issue full of self-actualization and beautiful bloody coups de grace, mostly from June, who finally stands up to her whimpering douchebag husband. Cason also actualizes, deciding what he wants to do with the rest of his life, being that he can’t go back after today. By the end of the issue, Simone manages to bring all of her characters to satisfying places, while still giving them some room for inferred growth.
Staggs, meanwhile, gets to finally deliver on the action and blood front, and even draws a poignant send off for her recently departed dog.
The final panel of this issue promises more Crosswind, but with such a satisfying ending, I have to hope the series continues as an anthology, showing us another incredibly freaky-friday.

How time flies when we are happy, it’s a great honour and pleasure to be your husband. I love you dear. Happy anniversary! You are the rhythm if I’m a song, And we hum the melody for a time very long!!! Happy wedding anniversary!!! You have helped me find the right answers to all the difficult questions life has thrown at me. Happy anniversary. You know you’re in a real relationship when making sacrifices for someone else, makes you happy from within. I love you, happy anniversary. You the best woman I have ever known, And when you came as my wife, my sorrows were automatically blown!!! Happy wedding anniversary!! A great idea is to pour your heart out on paper and write some great, personal, no-google wedding anniversary wishes. That way, she will know exactly how you feel and become extremely happy. You could also say those things to her directly. Apart from that, you could either take her out to a fancy restaurant and have dinner while chatting away about all kinds of things under the sun, take her to the place you first saw/met her and tell her how grateful you are to have her in your life, or spend a quiet day at home doing absolutely nothing other than enjoying each other’s company, the whole world aside. Getting her a meaningful anniversary gift is also a part of wedding anniversary wishes. There are so many couples who can’t be together on their special day. But instead of sulking about it, you could postpone your plans for another day and call or send some sweet wedding anniversary wishes to your wife. After all, there’s no rule that you can’t celebrate your love on other days of the year. Words can go a long way if they are the right ones. This is why you need to write how YOU feel and not copy words from somewhere. Not all of us are great writers but on days like those, it’s not the writing style that matters. It’s all about the meaning. So make sure it’s all you and that she gets the message loud and clear. Pour your heart out into those wedding anniversary wishes. Read the full article

--
Lin didn’t fall in love with you right away. When you auditioned for the ensemble, he was pleased with your skills and your potential. When you became fast friends with everyone and started to turn up in whatever dressing room the cast was crashing in during the afternoon, he laughed and got to know you. When you became the alternate for the Schuyler sisters, he was a little nervous, but you never seemed to be needed on the nights he was there.
When Pippa decided to take a month off, making you the full-time Eliza, he realised he was screwed.
The night of the first performance, Lin was uncharacteristically nervous. Groff sauntered into his room about an hour before places, most of his costume on though his hair was still brown and loose. “Hey,” he grinned and flopped on Lin’s couch, “you look nervous.”
“No more than usual,” Lin insisted, gaze fixed on the video game he was playing. Groff picked up a controller and joined in, a little player two has entered the game notification flashing at the corner of the screen.
Groff smoothly vaulted over an obstacle and grabbed the coins stashed there. “Is it Y/N?” he asked conversationally. Lin promptly dropped his control. He scrambled for it, swearing as his character was killed. Groff laughed, “How apt.”
“I don’t know what you mean,” Lin said resolutely, quickly regenerating his character. His slight blush gave him away and Groff smirked triumphantly.
“Someone has a cru-ush,” he said in a sing-song voice. Lin shoved him lightly.
“I do not have a crush,” he said, “Crushes are for high-schoolers.” He just enjoyed your company, had grown used to having you curled up in a corner, reading or chatting. You were kind and funny and of course he liked you. Just not like that, right?
--
It wasn’t until Helpless that Lin realised exactly how wrong he was. You were captivating. He found it difficult to concentrate on Renee at all when you were there, staring back at him with adoration in your eyes. He had to keep reminding himself that he it was just good acting and that needed to concentrate before he found himself messing up Alexander’s smooth flirtations.
You looked at him like he was the sun, and he found himself wishing he could pretend, just for a moment, that you meant it.
“Elizabeth Schuyler,” you curtsied, “It’s a pleasure to meet you?”
“Schuyler?” Lin was supposed to look at Renee but he couldn’t take his eyes off you.
Renee laughed, “My sister!”
He bent to kiss your hand. “Thank you for your service,” you said as he straightened.
“If it takes fighting a war for us to meet, it will have been worth it.” He extended an arm to you. You took it and the two of you moved into the dance.
The wedding march started playing and Lin’s heart was thumping painfully loudly. Oak walked down the aisle and tossed his flower petals and you sang your final “helpless”. Lin moved forwards and gently kissed you. He felt hyper aware of your hands in his, the slight brush of the veil against his face, and the fireworks display behind his eyes.
He was in love. As the lights dimmed, he decided to ask you out after the show.
The transition to Satisfied started and you moved away. Lin focused on getting into place, one arm around your waist. In a moment he would kiss you again, he realised. Your emotions were so rawly presented in your acting and the kiss- as staged as it was- had felt real. It had felt so natural to cup your cheek, pull you to his side, look down at you as if you were his world.
Rewind, rewind-
The stage started to rotate and Lin readied himself to go through it all again.
--
After the show he changed into a comfy pair of jeans,a t-shirt, and his favourite hoodie. He hurried downstairs, hoping to catch you before you went to the stage door.
When he arrived, you were talking to Daveed. Swallowing his disappointment, Lin pretended to be looking for his phone until Daveed grinned and left to stage door. “Hey Y/N,” he said, going for a casual tone but knowing he probably sounded anything but, “you doing anything after we stage-door?”
You looked around, checking to see if anyone else had made it downstairs yet. “Lin,” you whispered, unable to contain your excitement, “Daveed just asked me out!”
His heart sank. "That's great!" He managed to say. He should be happy for you, he knew- you looked happy, grinning and all but dancing around the room- but bitterness had settled in his stomach.
He was too late. Daveed had got there first. A small part of him hoped it wouldn't last. The rest of him reminded him to be happy for you and Daveed.
--
Three weeks later, you and Daveed were still dating. Most days, you were Lin's Eliza for a tantalizing two hours. The rest of the time, you were as distant as the stars.
Daveed was affectionate- pulling you to his side, kissing your forehead, your hands, your cheeks, your lips. Even when you weren’t together, he talked about you with a fond smile, writing rap verses about you between shows.
Lin resigned himself to a broken heart and tried not to dwell on every moment where he got to hold you, kiss you, and pretend you were his and he was yours.
--
In March, the whole cast got together to celebrate Groff’s birthday. Everyone gathered on the roof of the Richard Rogers, thankful that the weather was warm, and ate and drank.
Lin sat with Chris. “You alright, man?” Chris asked, passing him a beer.
“Hmm?” Lin asked, gaze still on where you and Daveed were dancing in the middle of the makeshift dance floor, “Yeah, I’m fine.”
Chris followed Lin’s gaze, understanding dawning. “You’ve got to move on,” he said sympathetically, “Y/N and Diggs are happy.”
Lin avoided answering by taking a swig of beer. He knew he had to move on, he had tried- fuck, had he tried. But every time he thought he might be able to move on, he would go onstage as Alexander and fall in love with his Eliza all over again or you would tell him a silly joke or start dancing to your favourite song backstage.
As the evening went on, Lin got progressively drunker. Chris had left at some point- his wife wanted him home a bit earlier- and Lin had been reduced to leaning on Leslie.
“I don’t think you should have any more,” Leslie said firmly, pulling the shot out of Lin’s grip. “Why don’t you go and lie down in your room?”
Lin nodded distractedly but did as Leslie had suggested. He headed down the stairs, pausing in the common room when he saw you. You were sitting on the table, legs swinging, quietly singing Helpless as you typed on your phone.
“S’beautiful,” Lin said and you looked up, pausing your singing.
“Hey Lin,” you smiled and your smile was like the song, “you alright?”
He nodded and walked over to you, leaning against the table beside you. He was drunk, he knew, but the nerves that he usually experienced when talking to you were gone, so it wasn’t so bad, really.
“You’re lovely,” he sighed, leaning his head on your shoulder, “my ‘Liza.” You laughed and Lin sat up. “Do that again?” he asked.
“What?” you asked, confused.
“Your laugh,” Lin gestured vaguely, “it’s nice.”
You hopped down off the table and extended a hand to Lin. “Come on,” you said, “lets get you home.”
Lin took your hand and let you guide him into his jacket and then out to a taxi. He leaned heavily against you. You got into the taxi and gave the driver Lin’s address, helping Lin guide the seatbelt into the buckle.
--
He must have fallen asleep, because the next thing he knew you were helping him out of the taxi and into the apartment building. “Where’s your key?” you asked gently. Lin stuck his hand into his pockets and handed you a pencil, a crumpled up piece of paper, his subway pass, and finally his keys.
“Here,” he said proudly as you set to unlocking the door. His apartment was dark, largely unfurnished because, even after a few months, he was mostly living in the theatre.
You helped him to bed, finding his pyjamas as Lin kicked off his shoes and threw his coat over a hook by the door. He headed through and flopped on the bed, on top of the covers. You laughed. “Lin,” you complained, “you have to get under the covers.”
Lin’s only response was a groan, but he let you prod him until he got into bed properly. You disappeared into the kitchen before returning with a glass of water and a tylenol. “Take this in the morning,” you advised, “sleep well.”
As you turned to go, Lin reached for you hand. “Stay-” he insisted, tugging you weakly.
“I can’t,” you said, trying to make him let go.
He wasn’t sure what made him say it, but he held on and said “I love you”.
You were silent for a moment, your expression unreadable. “Don’t,” you said quietly, your eyes closed. You pulled out your phone. You typed something out and clicked send, “you don’t mean that.”
“Do,” he insisted stubbornly, “lots. Wish you were my ‘Liza.”
You sat down on the edge of the bed. “Go to sleep, Lin,” you said quietly, “I’ll stay.” He loosened his grip on your hand and closed his eyes. The last thing he felt before he fell asleep was the feeling of your fingers running gently through his hair.
--
When Lin woke up in the morning he had a pounding headache and you were gone. He wandered around the apartment to make sure, mentally berating himself for telling you he loved you. You were happy with Daveed- you didn’t need him getting in the way.
Lin ran a hand through his hair, remembering you doing the same the night before. He was an idiot. A glance at the clock revealed that he needed to get going if he wanted to make it to rehearsal on time.
Andy wanted to run through some changes in the choreography for Yorktown, and it was all hands on deck. You would be there, he realised, and so would Daveed.
--
“Good work,” Andy said approvingly. Everyone grinned and started to put away their bayonets. Andy spotted Lin and called to him, “Hey Lin? Can we run It’s Quiet Uptown while we’re here?”
He nodded distractedly, looking around for you. When he had arrived, anxious to apologise to you, you had been nowhere to be seen.
“Looking for Y/N?” Renee asked, appearing at his side, one eyebrow raised. Lin nodded, wondering how she was always so good at guessing, “I heard about last night.”
“You did?” his voice seemed higher than usual and, if her smirk was anything to go by, Renee had noticed.
“So you love her,” she said, smirk settling into something more sympathetic. Lin nodded hopelessly. Renee hugged him briefly before heading to places. Lin headed to stand in the centre of the turntable, waiting for you to come and stand beside him.
Renee started to sing “There are moments that the words don’t reach-” and Lin found himself hoping for your forgiveness himself.
When he started to cry at the end and you were to reach for his hand, Lin wondered if you would. But your hand slipped into his and you rested your head on his shoulder. “I’m sorry,” Lin whispered as Renee finished the song.
You squeezed his hand. Lin hoped that meant he was forgiven.
--
He was just grabbing a couple of things from his room when you knocked hesitantly on the door and walked in. “Hey Lin?” you asked.
Lin turned his head so quickly he cricked his neck. He winced and rubbed at it. “Yeah?”
“About last night...” your hands were in your pockets and your gaze firmly on the floor.
Lin gulped. “I’m sorry,” he blurted, wanting to hug you in apology but realising that might be a little weird. “I didn’t want to-”
“I know,” you said. You pushed your hair out of your eyes- you had been saying you needed a haircut- and met Lin’s gaze. “Look,” you said firmly, “maybe there was a time where I felt... like that.”
Disappointment settled like a stone in Lin’s stomach. So he had been too late. “You did?” he knew he sounded hopeful. How had he missed any inkling that you might have felt the same?
“I did,” You took a deep breath. “But not any more. I’m with Daveed now and, whatever this is, it needs to stop.”
Lin nodded. “Friends?” he suggested, feeling almost scared. He couldn’t lose you- not now, not ever. Not his Y/N, not his Eliza. Except that you weren’t “his” Y/N.
You nodded, looking relieved. “Yeah,” you grinned, “Friends.” You hugged Lin tightly and Lin closed his eyes and hugged you back.
It would be enough.

The Time to Speak Up Is Now
I’m not here to complain about being the victim. In fact, I don’t even know if I’m the victim. People tell me I am, but each flashback brings forth feelings of guilt. “You know that’s the textbook definition of it not being your fault, right?” my current boyfriend said to me. “That man is a f*cking pig,” my therapist reiterated each session. “You should sue him,” my father insisted. But let’s rewind to before I shocked my closest friends and family with the news that I’d been sexually harassed at work.
I was 21 and freshly out of my first real relationship of three years. It was abusive, mostly verbally, but regardless, my self-esteem had dwindled down to nothing. I had to move out of my ex’s house and back in with my dad who lived an hour away. The only problem was my restaurant job of two years was right down the street from my ex’s, but I loved working there so much that I continued to make the commute. Fast-forward to two or three months of being single; I was incredibly self-destructive and lost. Childhood daddy issues aside, I sought for any male acknowledgment I could find to fill the void. I worked doubles almost every day. I had nightmares of my bed being glued to the ground of the restaurant (and if that doesn’t speak volumes then I don’t know what does). Needless to say, my social life was zilch. Niente. Nothing. The only people I saw were my coworkers and my boss. My boss had always been like a father to me; he’d listen to my problems, help me out financially if I needed it, supported my schooling and writing aspirations...until he reached down my shirt. To put this into perspective, he was three times my age (yes, 60 years old), married, and had three kids (all of whom were older than me). Regardless, I allowed it to happen. Yes, I had a few drinks, but I was coherent enough to know what was going on. He even asked permission and I said it was okay. To this day I absolutely regret that very moment. Soon enough, this man was reaching up my dress and squeezing my ass whenever I went to the back office, even to ask him work-related questions. I didn’t give him permission to do that; he simply assumed he could because of that one time I let him put his hand down my shirt. Eventually, I began to purposely avoid the office if I knew he was in there alone. At the time, I just accepted the situation as it was. I saw it as nothing more than a minor inconvenience. I was terribly mistaken. As time went on, these types of situations continued to escalate. I’ll never forget one of the first nights when we were the last two out of the restaurant and he whipped out his penis in the middle of a parking lot next to a busy street and asked me to “kiss” it. There is no other way to describe the feeling I felt besides pressured. Definitely pressured. I said no and used the excuse that we were next to a busy road to get out of it, but that only got me out of it for that night. Looking back, I should have slapped that man in his face. Apparently, spontaneously whipping out his penis wasn’t a one-time thing. It happened several more times. But one of those times I remember more vividly than others; something in my brain finally clicked. We were the last two in the restaurant again and as I was trying to leave, he unzipped his pants. I turned around and his penis was hard and out. He grabbed onto my arm and pulled my hand to touch it. He was obviously stronger than me and the way he pulled me was aggressive. At that moment, I knew THIS was not OK. “Don’t f*cking do that,” I said to him. After sternly giving him a piece of my mind, a piece that neither of us knew I had, he reluctantly apologized...but it didn’t change the massive amount of respect I had lost for him. Suddenly, I’d realized what a monster this man was.  This part of this story I’ve contemplated leaving out because it’s very personal, but if this has ever happened to another girl, maybe this will help her feel less alone. There was one particular night when we were behind the bar after all of the other employees left, and I let him go down on me. We were both drunk. I don’t entirely remember why or how it happened; maybe a deliberate mental block. He was sick and had a cold sore. I don’t need to say more. The tests confirmed it, many, many tears were shed, and I’ve never been so angry at a man in my entire life.  After all of the doctors’ appointments and money spent on medication, I dug myself into a deep depression. I felt as if I’d never be worthy of being loved by someone in the future, that I wouldn’t be able to have kids, that I’ve ruined my life because of this man. Evidently, all of this wasn’t enough for me to find a new job; I was horribly afraid of leaving my comfort zone. Soon enough, I found myself working with my boss’ son almost every day. He was about a year and a half older than me. We ended up dating very on-and-off for about three years. I think I did it as a self-defense mechanism so his dad would never make me feel like I had to have sex with him again. It worked–for the most part. The first few times we broke up (which was a frequent occurrence because you can’t force yourself to love someone if you don’t) his father still tried pursuing things with me. He would shower me with compliments...then ask me to follow him to another parking lot. Throughout the three years of dating his son, I attempted to re-establish that fatherly relationship I initially had with him, but this time as a father-in-law. His wife was such a nice woman and always bought me gifts around the holidays or when she went on trips. She had no idea I had slept with both her husband and her son. The guilt ate away at me every day. Not to mention, I told my ex that I slept with his father. He still stayed with me. When we finally broke up, I left the restaurant. I told my boss that his son knew about our affairs and now the two of them share the same knowledge. Naturally, my boss was shocked and afraid that his son would tell his wife if he were angry one day down the road. I had to remind myself that this was no longer my problem and I had to focus on bettering myself and my life. Weeks later, I tried contacting my now ex-boss to wish him a happy birthday but received a message back from his wife saying she and her husband are respecting their son’s wishes by not contacting me. And just like that we never spoke again.  For some reason, I was a little heartbroken. Maybe because I had been left alone with the reminder of this man every day for the rest of my life because of this daily, lifelong medication I have to take. Or maybe because I had to leave behind my other coworkers who I loved or the customers who I had grown close to. When trying to explain my feelings about the situation to friends and family, no one could understand why I allowed any of it to happen in the first place, which is understandable. Even I, to this day, cannot fathom why I let it go so far. Through all of this, the point is sexual harassment in the workplace is real; in fact, it’s an epidemic. Older men taking advantage of young distressed women is real. Depression and self-destructive behavior are real. All of these problems are real and need to be addressed and the time to speak up about them is now. I’m writing this because I want men and women in the workplace to be reminded that if your boss, or any of your coworkers, is making you feel uncomfortable in ANY way, you need to say something. It sounds easier said than done, but when it comes down to it if you don’t stand up for yourself, who will? It’s your body; your own personal bubble. DON’T go along with it because you’re afraid of losing your job or you’re worried they won’t like you anymore. DON’T put yourself in a situation where because you didn’t initially speak up you now have to avoid certain situations so you won’t have hands shoved up your dress or down your shirt. Similarly, if you’ve contracted a sexually transmitted disease, you’re not alone. You’re not incapable of being loved again and it’s easy to fall into this horrible pit of despair where you think that’s the case. It’s NOT. You are worthy of being loved. I repeat: you are not in this by yourself, no matter how isolated you might feel. Do whatever you have to do to love, appreciate, and respect yourself as a woman, as a man, as a human being. Don’t second-guess yourself; the time to speak up is now.

Review Game Detroit: Become Human
It’s a testament to the breadth of Quantic Dream’s branching storylines that I felt terribly guilty as the credits rolled after my second playthrough of Detroit: Become Human, as I’d played against my personal moral compass to test how far I could push the story’s exploration of the morality of artificial intelligence. This was very much the opposite of my mostly peaceful first run, and Detroit obliged my wickedness to a surprising degree, leaving a trail of bodies of those who had previously survived in my wake. And while it never seems to know when enough heavy-handed expositional dialogue is enough, Detroit: Become Human manages to be a frequently moving melodrama that bends to your choices with meaningful results.
Tumblr media
Each of those playthroughs took around 10 hours to complete, and during that time Detroit’s pace rarely lags thanks to the deft juggling act it performs, alternating between three android characters across multiple chapters: Kara, a housekeeper who must care for a little girl named Alice, Connor; a prototype police model whose assignment is to round up ‘deviant’ androids, and Markus; a carer model who believes androids should share equal rights with humans.
The trio of performances is excellent. Bryan Dechart is delightful as Connor thanks to his deadpan innocence, which makes for a great foil against the whirling dervish of his cynical partner, Clancy Brown’s Lieutenant Hank Anderson. Valorie Curry brings quiet strength to Kara, and excels at selling her love for her ward, Alice, who is quite possibly the least charismatic video game child to have ever existed. Jesse Williams employs all of his dreamy Grey’s Anatomy warmth as Markus and is never unlikeable, no matter how you choose to play him.
Based on your choices, you can change their personalities and the tone of their individual stories. In my first playthrough, for example, the relationship between a humble Connor and the android-hating Anderson played out like a knockabout buddy comedy. In my second, I let Connor’s ambitions take over, and his story was of a different genre.
Though Markus appears to fundamentally remain endearing no matter what you do (unlike Connor, who really can be played as a hero or villain), there’s a tug-of-war going on within him that throws up some of Detroit's most interesting moral quandaries. Kara’s story seems less tonally flexible but is the quietest and most intimate, which provides a welcome contrast to all the running and explosions you can opt into in the other two stories.

For the most part, supporting characters adapt to the way you choose to play, but there are occasional misfires. When I played as ‘nice’ Connor, for example, Anderson was far too aggressive toward him to be believable. When I played as ‘mean,’ or even ‘indifferent’ Connor, his fury made a lot more sense. At one point, Markus gained a lover very abruptly, and I felt I’d missed a slow burn somewhere. It’s noticeable when your choices feel they’re going against the grain of a more robust story.
I found all three of Detroit’s central characters to be dramatically interesting, which meant putting them in compromising situations – or worse, killing them – was a real fear throughout. It’s testament to the writing and performances that I found making decisions “just to see what would happen” teeth-clenchingly hard.
I'm a Real Boy
The backbone of Detroit’s story – meaning the one that’s relatively fixed in place despite the choices you make around it – is big, ambitious fun that takes Phillip K. Dick's question of whether androids dream of electric sheep to the nth degree. In doing so, however, it does suffer from a multitude of plot holes. Marcus appears to gain magical android powers when it suits him; Hank is impressed when Connor solves the most basic of mysteries; and one twist makes absolutely no sense if you look back on that particular storyline after having finished.
These were noticeable (and often pretty funny), but they weren’t deal-breakers for me. Detroit is audacious and silly as hell, but it’s got real heart to it. There were enough moments of quiet tenderness to keep me emotionally invested, and the stakes were suitably high - particularly in its final act - to keep me thrilled.
With this in mind, there is a lot of clumsy exposition and dialogue I was willing to forgive, as one would while watching a fun B-movie. But occasionally, Detroit ignores the standard writing rule of “show, don’t tell” to such an extent I was yanked out of the story. Bad guys spout monologues that spell out Detroit’s themes in capital letters. (There’s a compartment for androids on public transport, in case you didn’t get what Detroit was going for here.) Select side characters, like Hank’s harrowed police chief and the inexplicably wise and mystical Lucy - are loudly cliched, so we understand what their roles are without any real character development.
With the remarkable performance-capture technology – and performances – Quantic Dream has at its disposal, there’s no real reason for such heavy-handedness. Nor do I think Detroit is incapable of subtlety; some of the scenarios here are unusual and profound. But I wish its ideas had more room to breathe before being trampled by someone spelling out the meaning for us.
Characters are certainly capable of non-verbal expressiveness. The level of detail you can see in their faces is astounding; facial hair, blemishes, freckles, and moles are rendered in stunning detail, particularly in checkerboard 4K on the PS4 Pro. The animation is just as good; as Kara and Alice hurry through the rain on a freezing night, hunched over and miserable, I could have been watching two humans from the side-streets.
The world here feels very real, too, built with a sense of history. This is a miserable, dark version of a future Detroit where androids are so omnipresent that they’re old news, sold in chain stores for the price of a discount mobile phone. Little details from the sidelines tell the story of a burst tech bubble, like basements filled to the brim with discarded models or a street performer advertising the fact he is playing “human music.”
Though the path you are guided through in Detroit’s world is as linear as previous Quantic games, I felt like there was more time to enjoy these beautifully detailed environments. One of my favourite sequences involved chasing graffiti tags to find a particular location, which ended up being an eerie, silent excursion in a forgotten corner of the city. There’s also a marvelous scene in an abandoned amusement park which still creaked with enough life that I got a sense of what it might have been, once upon a time.
The way you interact with Detroit’s environments hasn’t evolved much from Quantic Dream’s usual formula, which is unobtrusive and mostly works. Action sequences are generally executed using timed button presses, swoops of the thumbstick, and occasional motion control, which evoke the action you are performing on a case-by-case basis. An android detective mode allows you to scan your environment to reconstruct crime scenes, and fast-forwarding and rewinding through these is a lot of fun, as is a new ability to ‘pre-construct’ scenarios before you execute them. I would have liked the opportunity to play around with the latter ability more than I was allowed to, in fact.
Like Beyond: Two Souls before it, though, Detroit: Become Human struggles to justify its multiple fight scenes with meaningful interactivity. Clicking on buttons at just the right time while struggling with an angry android encourages a welcome sense of participation in the fight, but you have to screw it up disastrously to fail. I understand that making combat a proper challenge runs the risk of introducing an immersion-breaking sense of trial and error, but I was left wishing the stakes were just a little higher after I ‘won’ each fight without really trying. Why make them interactive at all if the input feels so meaningless?
Of course, the way you play Detroit is primarily through the choices you make within it. While there’s that backbone of a story that can’t be shattered, which can occasionally result in frustration when it makes a decision for you to keep you from straying too far off the beaten path, I found its branching paths to be multiple and deep. Quantic Dream has been smart in making this multitude of paths transparent through flowcharts introduced at the end of each chapter, showing you just how differently it could have played out if you’d made another choice, enticing you to play through again.
Not every alternate choice leads to a drastically different story, but some will. Sometimes it might lead to the same result, but by a surprising new means. Sometimes it might change your relationship with another character and unlock a path that wasn’t there before. Sometimes it might result in death, whether that be of a supporting character or one of the central trio (they can all die at points throughout Detroit), or a dramatic action sequence with unexpected consequences. Comparing endings, not only between my first and second playthroughs but with other players, was astounding, particularly when I assumed everybody’s story had wrapped the same way as mine and found that nobody’s had.
For me, this is the biggest draw of Detroit. One playthrough really isn’t enough to see what it has to offer, and characters and world-building are interesting enough that it was a pleasure to go back to see what I’d missed in scenarios that are deceptively complex.
The Verdict
Detroit: Become Human is a poignantly pulpy interactive sci-fi drama where your choices can impact events to a greater and more satisfying degree than in most games of this type. Though I wish its story had been handled with a softer touch, especially considering the subtlety that can be conveyed through its tech and performances, its well-written and acted central trio were vital enough to me that I found myself feeling genuine distress when they were in danger and a sense of victory when they triumphed. Most importantly, Detroit offers a multitude of transparent branching paths that entice further playthroughs, and choices have a permanence that raise the stakes throughout.

Infertility + IVF
http://bit.ly/2oScE6k
Writing these sentences almost still feels like a dream. Well, I should rephrase, it actually feels like a nightmare. If you or someone close to you has battled with infertility, I wish I could reach out and hug them through the screen. It’s something I would not wish on my worst enemy. The process is like a big rollercoaster filled with ups and downs, and when you are down, not only are you down but IVF punches you in the face. It’s a war on your body and your mind. I am trying to be calm when I write this because my mom reads my blog and she would be upset if I dropped the F-Bomb in every sentence. But let me tell you… I am holding it in.
I debated a lot about whether I wanted to share my experience with you all. It’s been such a personal and individual journey filled with endless heart break. It was when I first read Caitlin’s posts on the subject and started opening up to the people around me that I found that infertility is much more common than you might think. A big part of my process has been being open with those around me because there is no way I would have been able to endure this process staying silent. The more I talked to people and the more I talked about IVF, the more people I was able to connect with and learn from. I usually don’t get this personal, but the more I thought about it, if I am able to help 1 person with the things I learned from this experience, it will all be worth it. I want those women(and men) going through these struggles to know that you are not alone. It has been harder than I can ever put into words. I am going to try to dig in as deep as I can so if you don’t want to hear about my uterus, it’s probably a good time to stop reading. For those that have any more specific questions, please feel free to reach out. By email, by DM, however you feel comfortable. I am happy to help in any way I can. Please know I do not consider myself a great writer but I hope to share my thoughts and feelings with you as eloquently as I can. While I am sharing my experience, please also be aware that everyone’s experience with infertility is completely different. I am not stating any of these things as fact, only letting you know what happened to me, how I experienced it, and what I learned.
How we got to fertility treatments Rewind to May 28th 2015 when Blake and I got married. It was the biggest and most important thing we had been through together to date and handsdown the best day of my life. After the wedding, we both knew we were ready to grow our family. We visited my gynecologist and got the run down. Get off birth control, genetic blood testing, prenatal vitamins, and time to get pregnant. Sounded simple right? After stopping birth control and letting my body normalize from the years and years on the pill, month by month would go by without good news. I know everyone tells you, “be patient, it will happen” but as the time started to pass, I started to worry. We then made a trip to our Gyno and started to talk about next steps. Before trying any fertility medications, we tried a natural IUI (Intrauterine insemination) where they basically place sperm inside my uterus to facilitate fertilization. Apologies for any and all science speak from here on out… I figure if you are still reading this you want to hear the in and outs so I will try to leave little out. It came and went… negative. At that point, our doctor decided it was time for us to go see a fertility specialist.
Moving onto a fertility doctor I found my doctor through the recommendation of friends in the area. When it comes to the importance of finding the right doctor for you, you have to like this place, and like it alot. You will potentially be spending a lot of time here so it’s important you like the people working there, and especially feel confident and trust your doctor. I had no idea I would have this kind of intimate relationship with a doctor’s office because I never thought I would have to consider IVF (In Vitro Fertilization). We had a consult with our doctor and came up with a plan to move forward with. We would try some hormone therapy medications (i.e. clomid, or femara) and try an IUI again to increase our chances of getting pregnant. Now, what I didn’t do when we met with our doctor was talk about our insurance and what our options were. This was my BIGGEST mistake. If you have recently started down this road or have just started fertility treatments and you have not fully digested whether or not you have insurance coverage and discussed with your doctor, STOP EVERYTHING YOU ARE DOING RIGHT NOW. While Blake and I had done INSANE research on our insurance coverage, we did not discuss with the doctor or staff fully. I think we kind of got lost in the shuffle in a busy week. While you want to point the finger, it’s really on you to know your coverage and make the most of it. We didn’t realize that our gynecologist wasted one of our coverage treatments on her office services. We wasted away coverage on a small procedure when we could have saved the coverage for IVF treatment. While I never thought I would have needed to save any of my benefits for IVF, I wish that the office would have counseled me better on our best strategy based on what we had to work with. Some people are not even lucky enough to have any coverage but if you have some, no matter how small it is, it’s so important to make sure you are utilizing it smartly. Some offices have shared risk plans where you can pay for a certain amount for treatment and if you are unsuccessful you sometimes get refunded a certain portion of costs. When you are spending thousands of dollars on treatment and medications, it’s important to get all of this information, as overwhelming as if might be, upfront. Trust me, get that info so you can have it in your back pocket.
The dreaded HSG test First things first, when you see a fertility specialist, they require an HSG test. This is the first of many uncomfortable things to come. Basically, they inject dye into your uterus while you are sitting on an x-ray table, legs in stirrups mind you, and they shoot the dye in to see whether it flows through your uterus and fallopian tubes. They take x-rays of this process to confirm or deny any structural problems you may have that could be an obstacle in getting pregnant. This was the first time that I went to trusty old GOOGLE and asked, “What is an HSG test?” what I read… was terrifying. This was my first lesson. The internet is a scary place and to take it with a grain of salt. I read horror upon horror story of the pain of this procedure. The whole reason it’s painful is that when the dye is injected it causes your uterus to cramp. I am not someone that takes a lot of medication, but I popped a valium or I would have likely had a panic attack in the waiting room. It helped me to relax and while the experience was not comfortable, it was not nearly as bad as I had read. We got the results of our test and found that everything was 100 clear so there were no issues. So we were sent back to our doctor for treatment.
4 Failed IUI’s The whole process is beyond overwhelming. I am lucky that Blake was able to come to so many doctors appointments with me because you have super limited time in each appointment to ask the important questions you have because everything just moves so quickly. I feel like when you are dealing with any health issue, you really have to be an advocate for yourself because it’s easy to lose track of your questions and get sidetracked when you are in a busy office. I started to keep a document where I would jot down questions for my doctor and track my progress. I am someone who is soothed by information. I want to know everything about what is happening in my body as scientifically as possible. I have had other friends that would rather be blissfully unaware. Everyone has their own way of coping so find what keeps you focused and centered and do it. I tried clomid for 1 cycle and that medication thinned my uterine lining so we switched to Femara. Femara is used off label in a similar way as Clomid to stimulate ovulation. You start by taking pills to stimulate egg growth and around the time of ovulation, you take a trigger injection to “trigger” ovulation. Then the next day you go in for your IUI procedure which is usually compared to the discomfort of a pap smear. I tended to get insanely bad cramps during this procedure so my doctor recommended 1 low dose valium to relax the muscles in my uterus and this was a life saver. After my second IUI at the fertility doctor, she wanted to take a closer look inside my uterus to make sure she didn’t see anything that would be hurting my odds of getting pregnant. I had a hysteroscopy, which is where they put a tiny camera inside your uterus to take a look around. Everything was clear which was great but I still did not have any answers on why I could not get pregnant. For our last 2 IUI cycles, I did injectable medications instead of oral meds. These “stim meds” are used to stimulate egg growth and egg quantity. So you do this carefully to get more than 1 egg growing to increase your chances. This was my first introduction to injections. I will talk more on that later (I HATE NEEDLES). After 4 failed attempts, thousands of dollars, you don’t even realize how much time just flies by. Our insurance coverage was flying out the window along with prescription medication coverage was filling up fast. Not to mention, our spirits were down. Way down. While friends were getting pregnant left and right at an almost comical rate, I was still not pregnant. We knew we would have to think about next steps.
IVF, I can’t believe we got here Before I started on this journey, you would hear the term “IVF” thrown around so easily and casually. While it’s true that many women go through the process, it’s not casual… NOT AT ALL. I think the fact that it’s so commonplace now takes away from the fact that it is an incredibly difficult, taxing, emotional, physical process that can have the most amazing rewards or the most deeply painful results. It took me a minute to wrap my head around the fact that I was indeed in this position. When you want something bad enough, it’s incredible the kind of strength you can find to pull you through. While I was down I was not out. I was ready. I was insanely nervous, read 3 books and was back to my dear friend google on all the forums reading everyone’s experiences from the good and bad to the ugly. I had also started acupuncture to prepare for my IVF cycle. Which was a whole other can of worms that I am happy to elaborate on at another time. I was as prepared as I could be. After all this waiting, I was finally ready to move forward.
It started again with a big talk with the doctor and making a treatment plan. Blake and I were SO excited after so much failure to finally be taking a more aggressive approach to getting pregnant. While I was excited.. I was completely terrified at the same time. As a 33 year old woman, I was in a good position for treatment. Blake is 31 and had everything tested and was perfectly healthy. We were lucky. The odds were with us. Some people are not that lucky including a lot of my personal friends and family. But, we were ready to start… the most expensive experiment of our lives. In the quickest way of explaining the process, you “stim” or stimulate follicle growth with injections and turn your ovaries into what I have come to call “an egg factory.” The goal being to create as many mature follicles for Egg Retrieval surgery as possible. You will then take a trigger injection to trigger ovulation and then the follicles will be harvested through surgery and fertilized with sperm. Then you sit and wait to see if they develop into embryos. Not so simple, but for those unfamiliar with the process, there you have it. From there on out, it’s an INSANE whirlwind. The doctor orders your medicine and there on your doorstep you get the scariest package of your life. A box filled with needles and medications. The box (well boxes) that came were filled with vials of meds, the scariest long needles you have ever seen, bottles of pills and other things. Overwhelming is an understatement. We piled our medications into a huge cooler and brought it to the doctors office. Nothing to see here, just a box of terror… no big deal. The nurses at the doctor’s office showed us how to mix and administer all the medications. Blake and I decided it was best for him to take full control of the medications so I could just swoop in, get my meds, and run back to the couch so I didn’t need to prolong the experience. The best piece of advice someone gave me was to put on my favorite show and have a sweet treat waiting to get me through shots. Make the experience as positive as possible. My shows of choice: The Office + Friends. Some people ice their injection sites so it causes less pain but I didn’t find that to help me and adding another step was not for me. You use these stim meds for anywhere up to 10-14 days depending on when you typically ovulate. (For most women this is day 14) As each day goes by, I became more fatigued, and more uncomfortable. I remember it being explained that it was the equivalent of having a bunch of grapes hanging in each ovary. Doesn’t sound very fun does it? What I didn’t mention previously is the side effects from all the medications even going as far back to the clomid. Again, please remember these are my personal experiences and everyone reacts different to the medications. I just want to be as transparent about my experience as possible. Even when it’s less than inspiring. The medicines made me INSANELY bloated. This was a constant. No matter what I was taking whether it be stim meds or hormones, I would be incredibly bloated. Weight gain came from also doing treatments for a year. Again, just what someone needs while going through this experience. More on that later. It’s all kind of part of it. I think the emotional part of the process is one of the biggest side effects of it all. I can’t begin to explain the kind of emotional place I was in. Crying at literally everything. So many hormones coursing through my body. It was a lot to endure without even taking into account the physical stuff. Poor Blake… and anyone that had to be around me at that time. It’s honestly all a mind game. I remember 2 days in right before my injections I was crying because I literally could not believe we had to do two injections in a row. I was just unraveling. Thankfully Blake is so calm and was able to put my mind back into perspective. Each injection was for a greater purpose. Getting us to our goal. While I am very much a realist, I fought hard to get and stay in a positive mindset. Toward the end it all became part of our routine. A day or two before surgery, I had to take naps during the day because I literally could not stay awake. I was wearing gym pants everyday because none of my pants would fit my insanely bloated stomach. I could barely reach down to tie my shoes. I was exhausted, but I was ready to get these eggs out!
Egg Retrieval Day I have only had 2 surgeries in my life so I was VERY nervous about the surgery. I know everyone thinks it’s so routine but I felt like I was going to have an anxiety attack the night before. I just NEEDED everything to go well. It had to. The biggest thing the day before was prepping what I would need during my recovery. Now, it all might be a little TMI but, we have gone past playing coi here. Stool softener was a must to prepare for those not so fun post surgery side effects, lots of electrolyte drinks (gatorade + pedialyte), BRAT diet foods, and one of the most important things, my heating pad. I ordered this one because it reminded me of being in acupuncture. I was as ready as I could ever be.
Surgery day went smoothly and easily. Before I knew it I was in the recovery room still woozy from anesthesia demanding how many eggs were retrieved. I probably asked the nurse like 5 times. We got 12 eggs. I had 20 brewing in my ovaries so the doctor said she felt this to be a little low but still good. So we did it. I was sent home to recover.
Post Egg Retrieval Recovery When you go through the IVF process, you read packets of information about the process etc in great detail. When I say packet it might as well be a small book. TONS of info that you need to read, digest and sign off on that you have understood everything. Again, more overwhelming experiences. On some of the last pages you find the complications due to surgery. I should have paid more attention to those. After surgery I was confronted with a lot of discomfort. Basically the follicles are removed from their shells and the shells remain in your ovaries and fill with fluid post surgery. This means, insane bloating and discomfort. I still have photos on my phone where I literally look 5 months pregnant because I was so bloated from fluid. I will save you the visual. I was basically laying flat for most of my recovery with alternating heating pads. The heating pads really soothed the ache and I highly recommend having multiple on hand. A few nights into recovery, I woke up in the middle of the night at 3am. I started to feel more discomfort and immediately felt sick and started to sweat bullets. I ran to the bathroom and before I could even get there I had sharp excruciating pain. The worst I have ever felt in my life. Blake had been sleeping and he finally woke up when I was laying on my back on the bathroom floor screaming from the pain rolling back and forth. I had no idea what was happening or what was wrong. Blake asked if we should go to the ER but I literally was in so much pain I could not move. What seemed like an eternity passed and somehow it lessened and I was able to make it back in the bed. I was now terrified to go back to sleep. The next day, we made an emergency appointment at our Doctors office. My doctor explained that we likely had a Ovarian Torsion. What happens is when your ovaries twist, it cuts the blood supply and creates the immense pain. What is really scary about Ovarian Torsion is that it is a very serious complication and if the ovaries do not untwist on their own, you need emergency surgery to untwist them and in most cases, you have a high chance of damage to your ovaries. The percentage of this happening is small, but, of course… it happened to me. I still have nightmares about it and after it happened I swore I would never do IVF again. Time passed and after a week at home resting, I finally left the house. Some women bounce back after just 1 or 2 days of recovery but this was not the case for me. I don’t know who those women are, but teach me your ways.
Embryo Results In the meantime when we were dealing with the after surgery complications, our embryos were developing and by day 6 the embryologists know which have developed to the farthest stage successfully and which ones have not made it. I remember I was home alone on the couch while Blake ran to the store to grab more food for dinner. Our doctor called and said she had some bad news: We only had 1 embryo that made it. Was this really happening? One embryo. I was hysterical. I desperately called Blake who didn’t have reception in the supermarket. I then called my sister who could not even understand me through the hysterics on the phone. I remember her voice that day… it was so filled with sadness. I can’t explain the feeling of having your future just flash before your eyes like that. It was clear from this, and from what the doctor told me, that the reason we were having problems getting pregnant was because of my egg quality. So insult to injury, my eggs are bad, and now we only had 1 chance from this whole process to get pregnant. We were devastated.
Blake and I had already decided we wanted to do genetic testing to ensure a safe and healthy baby so cells from our 1 embryo were sent off to get tested. We waited and we hoped that our one chance would be a good one. Weeks later, we got the call from our doctors office and our embryo was healthy. The best piece of news we had received in a long time. We were ready to start the process of our Embryo Transfer.
Prepping for Embryo Transfer The actual prep for the transfer is a lot less intense than the retrieval but it’s equally challenging with all the hormones. I spent a few weeks loading up on estrogen and taking other injections to find out right before my transfer that my lining was too thin. GREAT. If you don’t get your lining to a certain thickness, your embryo won’t be able to implant. Having a thick uterus lining is key and it was terrible news to hear everything we had done did not prepare my uterus to where it needed to be for implantation. Yet another obstacle in our journey. I remember the day our doctor told us we would have to start all over with our transfer medications. Right after I had scheduled an acupuncture appointment. This was not smart timing on my part but I tried to suck it up and head to my appointment. I got on the table and tried my best to relax. I had needles all over my face, arms, legs and my acupuncturist went to put my final needles in my feet and I felt a sting. Now, keep in mind, when your muscles are tense, sometimes the needles might sting a bit but they can adjust them no problem. It was not the day for a painful needle. I started balling uncontrollably and I couldn’t move because my whole face and body was covered in needles. My doctor started to clean my tears with cotton balls. It was a disaster. I was so overwhelmed and totally defeated having to start the whole embryo transfer process again. But, here we were. Round two. IVF can be one struggle after another and you just have to keep on pushing forward as best and as hard as you can. I was so close to the finish line. I had to pull it together and get back down to business.
For the second transfer attempt, we decided to use the same medications I used to stimulate my eggs to help my body increase it’s hormone levels more naturally. So we did what they call a “light stim cycle” while being careful not to encourage too many follicles to grow but enough where it would grow my uterine lining and raise the natural levels of hormones in my body. All of the estrogen I was still taking was giving me massive migraines but after some time they would pass. All the same side effects came with these meds including the bloating and emotional messiness. I was finally getting closer to my transfer and got cleared to start my progesterone injections. This is major! It means you are locked into a date and time and there is no turning back. Another injection hurdle: the progesterone injection. This was one of the scariest things to come in the mail. Since they are an intramuscular injection, they are long. 1.5 inches to be exact…. I know. Can you feel the trembling……….. I texted and called all my IVF friends to get their suggestions on how to get through it. The injections go into your butt so Blake did these as well. The first time, I was psyching myself out bouncing back and forth in the living room. Blake goes, “JUST DO IT!” I had to face my fear… it was going to happen. I stood up for these injections and squeezed a pillow and in the end, it wasn’t that bad. I mean, it’s not great, but I think I had built everything up so badly in my head. After the injection I immediately massaged it and sat on a heating pad. This helped ALOT. Apparently when you are doing these for a while, the progesterone can form little lumps from not distributing so it can make things more painful. It’s no picnic and I had a sore ass. But what are you gonna do. It was game time. We were getting closer to our transfer day.
Night Before Embryo Transfer I feel like the whole process made me nervous but this night I was the most excited. Everything was becoming very real. I could potentially be pregnant tomorrow. Well, not specifically but soon. Since my doctor wanted me on couch potato status for 3 days post-transfer, I wanted to get everything prepared the night before. I went shopping for my favorite snacks, picked up some books and magazines, cleaned the house, and laid out my favorite pajamas to be ready to come home and relax.
Embryo Transfer Day! This day was so surreal. I had scheduled my acupuncturist to come give me treatment before and after the transfer so I would be at my most relaxed state. We had a nice private room where the procedure was taking place and I got my treatment and Blake played some soothing music on his phone. (We actually played SirusXM Spa Radio. It makes me feel like I am getting a massage at a Spa. You have to check it out!) After my treatment was done, my doctor came in to give us the run down on what was going to happen. Before I knew it, our embryologist rolled in this crazy machine that was housing our embryo. It was WILD. His microscope projected onto the tv and we were able to see the embryo on the screen. Science is such a beautiful thing and it’s still a miracle to me that people are able to be helped in this way to have children. The embryo goes into a catheter and is then implanted via guided ultrasound into the uterus. We watched it all on the tv. I was so euphoric from my acupuncture, and so at peace, I felt so incredible good about the whole day. And just like that, we were done. I layed down for another 20 minutes and I was sent home to rest.
The Two Week Wait The first part of IVF is hard but when you get to this point, the Two Week Wait or “TWW” was the longest two weeks of my life. Like the whole process, it’s all about waiting and waiting some more. So it only makes sense the last part of the step is WAITING AGAIN. I know. Those who have been there, you know. The first couple days we spent having Blake wait on me hand and foot. I did start to get antsy on day 2. But I binge watched my favorite shows, read my books and stayed off my computer as much as possible. I was drinking and eating as many warm things as possible. It’s said to help with implantation and to keep your uterus warm and happy. Once I was off bedrest, we decided to take a couple day trip down to San Diego. Blake had to work and it was a nice time for me to just get away and take a break. During the TWW, you are also still taking progesterone shots so that was part of our process along with the other hormones I was on. I was desperately trying to distract myself so stop looking back at my calendar to see how many days were left until my blood work. Our friends, our family, and everyone around us were so excited to hear the happy news. Our fingers were crossed. It’s funny writing this now because I am forgetting some of the small details and medication we did during this step. I think it’s fair to say that sometimes, you kind of just block out some of your experiences because of how hard you struggled through them. While some of my memories are vivid, I feel like some moments I completely blocked out. I am digressing, but this wait was just as torturous as I had read in every fertility book and on every forum. But, if I had a bit of advice, keep as busy as possible. I know my busiest days and moments helped me to stop from obsessing over everything.
Blood Day The day of your pregnancy blood work, I headed in early in the morning for my blood draw. I remember telling the nurse how nervous I was. I was… freaking out. We give them our cell phone number and they would call us as soon as possible most likely in the early afternoon. I spent the whole day glued to my phone afraid to even hop in the shower in fear I would miss it. Now I know I said this earlier, but I am a realist and always try to be open to the realistic possibility that things could go good or bad. We are really talking like 50/50 chances here of whether we got pregnant. While you think about those outcomes, all our friends and family were throwing as much love and positive energy at us as they could. It almost started to annoy me because I knew that it was not a 100% done deal. I guess that is the realistic side of me talking but, I had to face the fact that there were two outcomes possible and I needed to at least be aware of that going into this.
My phone ended up ringing and I feel like it was happening in slow motion. I picked up and while I put the phone on speaker Blake came running into the room from the office. “Hi Kimberly, I have some very sad news…” I fell into my hands and I became hysterical handing the phone off to Blake who had to finish the phone call with our doctor. I was crying so hard I couldn’t see or speak. Lola came over and started to lick the tears off of my face while Blake finished talking to the doctor. Our IVF had failed and it was over. That has to have been the darkest moment of my life. The words seemed to linger and it was like someone closing the doors on our hope to have a family. Devastated doesn’t begin to cover what we were both feeling. I was inconsolable. If you had looked into my eyes, I likely had a blank stare on my face for the next few hours. We sat together on the couch and through the end of my hysterics, I said, “We have to try again.” The hours and days following were hard. Everyone that knew we had our transfer was waiting for the news. Everyone knew we would have answers, and were waiting for news from us. Not only having to process what had happened between the two of us but we would have to be vocal and let our families and friends know what we had just found out. Living that devastation over and over again. I decided that I could not be faced with anyone directly asking me about it or I would have broken down. So I started to send texts out to everyone in the loop to let them know what happened, that I didn’t want to talk about it, but that I would reach out if I needed anything. Everyone was so respectful and gave us the space and time we needed to heal. I wouldn’t say you ever fully heal from those experiences but, we grow and we become stronger. Writing and rereading these results have tears welled up in my eyes. But I have learned that through this process, I have found this hidden strength and resilience. IVF can also be terribly hard on relationships and I am so happy to have Blake in my life who has been the most supportive person through my wild and crazy moments, and through some of these really messed up times of struggle. We are stronger together.
Moving on to our 2nd IVF Cycle After our failed IVF, Blake and I decided that my body and our minds, and our calendars needed a break from the rigorous doctors appointments, injection schedules, acupuncture appointments, and constant stress on my body. We took some time off to just be together and to live. It’s been about 2 months since our bad news and I have to say I feel like my soul has had a refresh. Since Blake and I decided to do another IVF cycle, we wanted to fully let go and give my body a break before we started again.
I have spent a lot of time thinking about what i could have done better to get better results. I was thinking back about my realistic approach to the process and always balancing the fact that this was never a 100% solution to my fertility problem. While everyone deals with these struggles in their own way, I realized that maybe I didn’t let go 100%. Maybe I wasn’t as positive as I could have been. Could it be my fault that I had such bad results? Is this on me for not doing my best?? I consider myself a very positive person. If you ask my friends, they will back that up. But this process was much harder on me than I ever could have imagined.
Having the opportunity to go through IVF again, I feel a shift inside. Because this WILL HAPPEN for us. I know deep down that Blake and I will be be able to grow our family one way or another. And something has shifted inside me. We can never give up. We are strong. Much stronger than we can ever imagine. The strength you pull from to get you through these hard times is truly a miracle. After my time off to clear my head, I am feeling so focused, and feeling so much love. I am going to hit the ground running with a positive spirit and I know that we are going to make it through again. I actually started to read this book and found it’s words to be so helpful preparing for my next cycle. The powerful message of turning fear into faith(whatever that means to you) is something I am working on. Love over Fear. It has been a good read so far and I am only 3 chapters in!
I am an open book and while it’s very hard for me to put myself out there like this, I hope that my experience can help others open up about their struggles with infertility. Know that you are not alone. We are all here going through this together. I have found it so helpful to speak up and not feel so alone in it all. I have several friends going through IVF right now and I feel like we all hold each other up when we most need it. Whatever you are dealing with, no matter how big or small, NEVER GIVE UP.
While we gear up for another IVF cycle soon, I hope to share bits and pieces with you. Maybe that is just on instagram stories, maybe it’s some more blog content. I don’t really know what it will be. I am just going to go with the flow, and live the best life I know how to. I sincerely thank you for taking the time to read this post. It has taken me weeks. I am nervous to press publish, but I feel like writing about it has been a cathartic experience to me. I know it’s all over the place, and I know at some points it probably doesn’t make any sense. But it’s me and now it’s here. To all of you out there fighting the fight, I am with you.
