I binged this webtoon today and yesterday and it's rly good i like it sm... "your wings and mine"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didnt know what to expect going in(i keep my hopes low tbh) but I kept getting impressed w the writing... it's rly funny but also surprisingly emotional, it has me laughing out loud 1 moment and then crying the next and then laughing my ass off again... there's a lot of silliness but the serious moments don't feel out of place or cheesy at all bc they did such a good job of building the charas up to that point... and the genuine and heartfelt exchanges btwn the charas are simple but surprisingly feel fresh? like the writer was lowkey galaxy braining writing these kcdnfj And they actually did such a good job w the slow burn romance, it's so sweet and cute and fun to watch grow... 😭 i'm caught up now and im sad i need more

Honestly what makes me feel this more is the death of smackjeeves. Like homestuck had its plot issues but artistically it was so varied that it did push the nature of what digital comics on the web could be, other comic hosting sites and collectives were around and i remember people talking about comics a lot with fan content leading to new ones. Paranatural I found from when the collab crew (biggest homestuck VA group at the time) which lead to discovering hiveworks and even more comics on there. Comics would crop up on tumblr and deviantart with mirror links to personal webpages or Smackjeeves pages. Fan content for comics you’d never heard of were everywhere and people would discuss comics that had small followings and personal sites that you’d just find and get into and it was great. It wasn’t just homestuck pushing the medium but it marked an era where comics were a big thing that could be found online and would get really popular in a way you don’t really see as much today.
Now its all on webtoon where every comic is formatted optimally for a small phone that encourages the same scrolling you do on every other social app. Smackjeeves is dead. I don’t see people talk about comic fury at all. Webcomics outside of webtoon and MAYBE tapastic are niche at best. I’m sure tapastic would be more popular if its app wasn’t the most poorly optimized reading software I’ve had the displeasure of downloading. This isn’t to say there aren’t bad webcomics on either phone app, but because it has the same algorithmic content farm style of presentation you see with stuff like youtube, it really does just kill the fun of finding a comic since it will feed you all the really popular ones that the computer says is good first before it shows you anything new or interesting.
As someone who grew up with not just homestuck but that big boom of online comics during the early 2010s and still keeps up with comics in a big bookmark list, it really does suck that it’s been reduced to this state. If you want something to break out of that, give Comic Fury and Hiveworks a browse for something more interesting. The first is a spiritual successor to Smackjeeves in that it hosts comics for free with some degree of webpage customization. The second is a publishing site with so so many comics that I have been coming back to since 2014 or so with so many good reads. I’d give a list of my current reads that aren’t on just those sites, but this post is long enough and that bookmark page is full of as many living comics as it is dead links. Shit sucks and the popular stuff looks the same, but art will never die.
People don't like to admit it bcs cringe or w/e but Homestuck really did revolutionize the webcomic as a storytelling medium and I am endlessly frustrated that before webcomic artists could really stretch our legs fucking webtoonz swooped in, set a new, more restrictive standard, and then monetized and monopolized the ever living fuck out of the concept of The Webcomic until it drove away anyone who couldn't be a professional quality manga artist for free, and now the only webcomics that actually feel like spiritual successors to Homestuck are so obscure they're basically cult classics that you have to beg people to read.
Like it's just so wild to be in high school and see Homestuck be like "we're using like fifteen different artistic mediums to tell this story bcs we can" and be really fucking inspired by that, only to grow up and see basically every webcomic ever have to conform to One Single Standard or fucking perish.

Guys...am I hallucinating? Wasn't there a "blue eyes silver dragon" meme or joke?
Like, "Oh, you're trying to mug me with a gun, well, good thing I have BLUE EYES SILVER DRAGON"
Like, i'm dying over here. I swear this was a thing. My spouse thinks i'm crazy. Idk if this was a Pokémon or a Yugioh thing and the only thing I get in my search results are cards to buy on amazon 😭
I need like, a historical meme/reaction joke library. So I have come to tumblr. Pls help.

I'm sorry, but this should come as a shock to absolutely no one.
Tumblr media
Just a little bit of 'insider info' (and by 'insider' I mean I was a part of the beta testing crew a few years ago) Webtoons has been messing with AI tools for years. You can literally play test that very same AI tool that I beta-tested here:
Mind you, this is just an AI Painter, similar to the Clip Studio Colorize tool, but it goes to show where WT's priorities are headed. I should mention, btw, that this tool is incredibly useless for anyone not creating a Korean-style webtoon, like you can deadass tell it was trained exclusively on the imports because it can't handle any skin tone outside of white (trying to use darker colors just translates as "shadows" to the program, meaning it'll just cast some fugly ass shadows over a white-toned character no matter how hard you try) and you just know the AI wouldn't know what to do with itself if you gave it an art style that didn't exactly match with the provided samples lmao
And let's be real, can we really expect the company that regularly exploits, underpays, and overworks its creators to give a damn about the ethical concerns of AI? They're gonna take the path of least resistance to make the most money possible.
So the fact that we're now seeing AI comics popping up on Webtoons left and right - and now, an actual "Webtoon AI" branding label - should come as zero shock to anyone. Webtoons is about quantity over quality and so AI is the natural progression of that.
So yeah, if you were looking for any sign to check out other platforms outside of Webtoons, this is it. Here are some of my own recommendations:
ComicFury - Independently run, zero ads, zero subscription costs (though I def recommend supporting them on Patreon if you're able), full control over site appearance, optional hosting for only the cost of the domain name, and best of all, strictly anti-AI. Not allowed, not even with proper labelling or disclosure. Full offense to the tech bro hacks, eat shit.
GlobalComix - Very polished hosting site that offers loads of monetization tools for creators without any exclusive contracts or subscriptions needed. They do offer a subscription program, but that's purely for reading the comics on the site that are exclusively behind paywalls. Not strictly anti-AI but does require in their ToS that AI comics be properly labelled and disclosed, whether they're made partially or fully with AI, to ensure transparency for readers who want to avoid AI comics.
Neocities - If you want to create your own site the good ole' fashioned way (i.e. HTML / CSS) this is the place. Independently run, offers a subscription plan for people who want more storage and bandwidth but it only costs $5/month so it's very inexpensive, and even without that subscription cost you won't have to deal with ads or corporate management bullshit.
Be safe out there pals, don't be afraid to set out into the unknown if it means protecting your work and keeping your control as a creator. Know your rights, know your power.

i forget if youve mentioned this already, but do you follow the sctir webtoon at all? asking because i decided to use that as my "in" with the sctir story, so i would read enough of it to get hooked and then seek out the actual novel. this is my usual approach, and its worked well as always, and im all set to go to read the novel, but i wanted to know what the opinion is on how faithfully the webtoon follows the novel, so i know if i can start from where the webtoon leaves off or if i should just go from the beginning?
i also started from the webtoon and then started the novel from the very beginning and while you can switch off from one to another, i'd recommend my approach! there are some changes made in the webtoon, some events switched places, some characters were introduced later etc etc, plus if you ask me, the energy is different. the novel has.... gloomier vibe... i guess.... it treats yoojin as less of a comic relief in a way? plus yoojin's inner monologue is a joy to read, he is incredibly funny and very bitchy, which you don't get as much of in the webtoon, i think? (plus don't mind me sounding unhinged but i feel like the webtoon downplays yoojin's "not too sane" side in his behavior and his relationships, as an exmaple you could look at him and yoohyun where his nightmares or yoohyun's belief in him only mattering to hyung was played for lau- /dragged away by the guards/)
TLDR you can jump from one to the other, but i a) won't recommend cause i am a bit bitter about it but also b) don't remember the chapter that would be the best to start from if you do, so that one you'll need to figure out somewhere else, sowwy !

🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾 CHAPTER FOUR
Dinner had been going smoothly.
You all sat down at the kitchen table to eat; the table laid out, with help from Soobin and Kai, with food you prepped with a last-minute trip to the grocery store. The food all matched their dietary needs that you hastily listed in your phone’s notes after asking them earlier in the store.
Your guests dig in as you carefully watch their reactions, knowing that if they were not pleased you would be upset but if they were pleased you would still be upset because you still don’t know how you were going to make enough money to keep the house, get necessities, and help for the guys.
Yeonjun nudges you shoulder as look at him confused.
“I’ve been calling your name.”
“Oh, you have? What’s up?”
“Thank you for making us dinner.”
And he grins at you showing his smiles, canine teeth on display. You weren’t expecting that, you feel your face heat up.
“It’s no problem.” Throwing a smile back at him.
“Can you pass the salt?”
Beomgyu shrugs at Yeonjun. “I don’t know, can I?”
The fox hybrid rolls his eyes, “Can you please pass the salt?”
“I don’t like the way you said ‘please’.” Beomgyu moves the salt farther from Yeonjun.
“Pass the salt, mutt.”
Beomgyu’s eyes widen as his jaw slacks. “What did you call me?”
“Mutt – which is what you are!”
“Holy fuck.” You lean forward resting your elbows on the table, cradling your head in your hands in hopes to quell the throbbing headache you were currently nursing.
Your headache could have dissipated if not for the incessant noise in the form of arguing happening at the dinner table. Thanks to Beomgyu and Yeonjun’s fight, Soobin and Taehyun tried to calm them down, Kai in turn made a passing comment about how Soobin finally figured out how to read the room making Soobin argue with him. Taehyun could only do so much when Beomgyu then began insulting Soobin as well.
Shutting your eyes, you press your palms against your ears in attempt to drown out the noise, but to no avail. Your patience breaks when Yeonjun begins throwing salt at Beomgyu, and in turn, adding unnecessary levels of salt to the food on the table – the same food you just spent so much time preparing.
“Oh my god!” You stand up abruptly causing your chair to fall to the ground and slam your hands on the table. “Stop fighting and sit down NOW!”
As if you had magic, all 5 guys immediately sit down in their chairs and shut up. None of them dare to move.
“If you excuse me, but I’m going to shower and then sleep in my room – alone. Wash the dishes and toss it the food because it’s too far salty to be saved.” You turn on your heel and stomp upstairs, slamming the bathroom door behind you.
You spend the rest of your night in your room, stewing in anger under the covers of your bed. The quietness in the room is a stark contrast to the kitchen.
Sighing, you pull down on your sleep mask and drift into a very unrestful sleep of constant tossing and turning.
🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾
After finally falling asleep once you heard birds chirping, waking up to no surprises in your bed was off putting. Usually by now either Soobin or Beomgyu would be putting half of their body weight on you after sneaking in during the night, but your outburst must have got through to them. You do feel bad, having an outburst in front of them after knowing for less than a week.
Gathering all your strength to get up, you get out of bed and begin getting ready for the day. Nothing too exciting since you just showered and changed out of your pajamas into stay-at-home clothes. It was surprising that when you walked out of your room to the bathroom to hear no loud noises from downstairs where the guys were.
When you’re done, you go back to the kitchen to see that it was spotless, and the trash was taken out. You peek into the living room to see if any of them were on the couch, but it was empty. Calling out their names as you move about the house as your nerves are growing. You hope that they didn’t run away.
As you frantically run around the house, a figure in the widow makes you pause. In the background are your roommates.
“Uh, you guys scared me why are you–?”
Stopping mid sentence at the sight of Soobin in his dog form, looking lethargic.
“Holy shit, is he sick?!”
Taehyun tells you, “We think he ate some chocolate.”
“Shit. Is there anything I can get him? Some over the counter meds to throw it up? I’ll call my friend again.”
🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾
After a long phone call with your friend, you have the list of medications that will have Soobin feeling better in no time. You’re browsing through the aisles of the pharmacy with your headphones on playing your favorite playlist when a tap on your shoulder pulls your attention. Turning to your left as you pause the music playing to move the headphones to your neck.
The pretty redhead smiles at you with a dazzling smile as she says your name with the sweetest tone.
“Uh, do I know you…?”
“It’s me, Maddie!”
You feel the air get sucked out of the room as the sound around you turns into tv static. This can’t be the same Madeleine that you were best friends with for the first 2 years of middle school until the first day of 8th grade she decided to stop which broke your 13-year-old heart.
It’s true that when you’re 13 – it feels like the entire universe is against you, but you’ll never forget that feeling when you jogged up to her at 7 AM all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed dressed up in new clothes and ight makeup you begged your mom to let you wear only to watch Maddie’s face turn to disgust as you waved. The malice in her voice as she made fun of your outfit and acted like the last 2 years meant nothing to her. But you change your mind a lot in middle school when you’re desperately trying to fit in.
“Oh, Maddie. I didn’t recognize you.”
She surprises you by throwing her arms around your shoulders, “You haven’t changed!”
You’re not sure if that was a compliment or a jab at your style for not changing since middle school, too stressed out over Soobin’s health to mull over it too much. You pat her back and move backwards, turning your attention back to the shelf to grab the last bottle you need, dumping it into the basket.
“It really is nice to see you again after all this time.” She tells you.
“Did you enjoy going to Academy for high school?”
She snorts, “I barely made it a month before being homeschooled! Didn’t have any friends the rest of high school. It sucked, but kinda serves me right for being so nasty to you in middle school.”
Oh, so she did reflect on how her actions have consequences.
“I have to head home, but it was… nice seeing you again.” You say with a small smile.
Maddie gasps as she grabs your free hand. “We should get lunch and catch up!”
The comment makes you freeze in place as her hazel eyes stare into your soul, trying to telepathically make you say “yes”. You love seeing the goodness in other people and people do grow up and change, but part of you wants to protect your younger self and turn her offer down.
She notices your hesitation. “Here, I’ll write my number down if you want to have lunch. No pressure!”
And with that, she twirls around and walks out of the store, leaving you to wonder if she stopped you from outside the store window or if this was all by coincidence.
🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾
“Guys, I’m back!” You yell into the house as you put the car keys into the bowl by the door. You hear the footsteps of the guys rushing from downstairs as you slip your indoor shoes on.
Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Kai form a wall around you as they throw question after question at you. It’s when you take your coat off when their faces turn from glee to grimace.
“Something reeks.” Yeonjun snaps
“Um.” You say taking full offense of his comment. Quickly ducking your head to your armpit to see if your deodorant wore off only to still smell “fresh & clean”. “Excuse you.”
Taehyun shakes his head as he takes your coat from you, holding it as far away as his arm length would allow him. “No, we smell someone else.”
“But I didn’t –.”
You remember that Maddie hugged you. The guys are probably smelling her with their hybrid senses, in fear of causing another fight like last night’s dinner, you step backwards.
“Is there anything I can do? Take a medical grade shower? Lather tomato paste like a skunk attack?”
“Don’t see other people.”
Kai hits the back of Beomgyu’s head as he complains.
“Well?” You cross your arms in an attempt to lessen the smell of others.
“There’s one thing that would help.”
“Yeonjun.” Taehyun grits out.
“What? I promise I’ll try to be understanding.”
“Could we… scent you? Like rub your wrist against our neck, it’ll transfer our scent to you and you’ll smell like us. Like our pack.”
Oh.
If you think back to your freshman year of college, you remember reading something about scenting with hybrids for your intro to humanities class. How it calms one to have all members of their pack smelling like them.
“You think I’m part of the pack?”
Without missing a beat Kai answers, “Of course you are.”
The thought of being welcomed into their pack makes your heart flutter. This is all you wanted growing up – people that wanted you.
“Well, I won’t stop you from scenting. It’s okay, guys.”
All their jaws slack as their eyes flicker to each other, still unsure if you’re agreeing. You nod once more at their hesitation and with that final confirmation, Yeonjun and Beomgyu pull you into a hug. Your eyes widen at how close up you’re seeing these eternal beings; Yeonjun’s full lips that trace over your left wrist, Beomgyu’s long lashes brushing against your right wrist, Taehyun’s nose over your left shoulder, and Kai’s blonde hair tickling your right ear as he finds your pulse point below your jaw. You tighten your fists as you try your best to maintain your composure at the slightly intimate moment.
You duck under their arms and through their legs when you see Soobin standing at the edge of the staircase, holding his stomach.
“Soobin! I have your meds!” You rush out as grab your purse that was placed on the couch, hastily grabbing the various bottles. Offering your hands out to him as your chest moves up and down.
“Thanks.” He weakly smiles as one hand goes to grab a bottle.
🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾・・・🐾
Soobin begrudgingly takes the meds you bought him and, thankfully, he’s back to his regular self within the hour.
You turn to leave the guest room to let Soobin rest more when you pause at the doorway. The first two times you woke up, you had woken up with Soobin sleeping next to you (and on top of you), so you assume that he has a habit of doing this. And you still feel bad for how dinner went.
Oh, screw it.
“Can I sleep next to you?”
Soobin sits up as he gives you a confusing look.
“I’d like to have a little sleepover. I feel bad about how dinner went and then you got sick.”
“I would like that.”
You head back to your room to grab your pillows sending Yeonjun a smile as you pass him by in the hallway. Soobin scoots over as you lay down on one side, putting the pillows in between you two. He makes no mention of it as you close your eyes.
“Good night, Soobin.”
“Good night.”

Here we go...
Edit2 : removed the nevermore tag for a reason vv
Edit; removed the nevermore tag because
1) nevermore has NOTHING to do with this situation, nevermore is a comic, this is completely different drama that involves a horrible person. Nevermore is a GREAT webtoon that brought a second family together for me, Im not hating on the comic. Im only involving the tag to gather attention to another side issue (its not bigger than the crimson issue. That issue is the main issue and the victims need more focus than anything).
So I haven't said anything about previous events so far, and my point still stands as I will remain quiet as everything has just come to a head with it all. It'll still sit here and marinate and reveal everything about the drama. A lot of people don't know, but all of this drama that happened? (Not the crimson drama, the previous drama about the mass ban) Has happened because Nora (or Sardonyx) personally went out of her way to lie and tell everyone what was happening. Most of the bans were innocent, if not all. And I was scooped up into it by nora herself and told the same shit, and I was only told the right issues involving it because someone who is close friends came forward about it all, and told me and showed me the truth.
Nora(Sardonyx) has had a hold on every dramatic situation, she has lied, been a hypocrite, a two face, and has shown she cannot be trusted. She has decided to talk shit and speak about all of this to a 13 year old, and Nora is 27. Everyone knows this, she is a manipulator who will try her best to make others look bad to get the heat off her back. Another issue with nora is previous conversations I've had with her, in light of them, some of the conversations we've had, she has made toxic remarks towards others. Bad mouthed almost every patreon, and has dragged me into it. I tried to match her jokes, tried to be friendly and laugh along with her. And in that, I'm sorry on my end. I never intended to hurt others, but she has. Again, I dont have any of these screenshots because I did leave any server I was associated with her in, and can't prove it on my end. She probably could, with cherry picked screenshots and edited ones as well.
I again apologize on my end for that, she has manipulated me through every part of our dms and has influenced me to be just as bad of a person. I've learned to be better, and I have talked with one of the people she has talked bad about and we are both on good terms. If no one knows this by now, she is still in the main server, after showing proof of her Threatening to kidnap and torture, her nasty remarks, she has tried to tell others that another person is Homophobic, which was untrue and that would have resulted in a ban. In the end, she's still there. And She's getting away with threats and others. I highly recommended staying away from her, as she has lied, manipulated and bought her way through everyone.
Another issue with nora is her banner situation, she has used NSFW fan art as a banner, fully exposed, unblurred fan art. Not going at the artist, but Nora using that art as her main banner on discord has resulted in minors seeing it. She has spoken to two people who asked her to change in, because they and others were uncomfortable and this was her response.
Tumblr media
She used the main nevermore discord, a server that had NOTHING to do with the situation. Also her lying in this reply, she talks to minors. (Not in the crimson disgusting way-) but she does actively dm minors at the time it happened. She wasn't considerate. And the kidnap and torture mention, well. She never got banned for threatening two people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I blocked out the other person and the victims names, as I don't know if they want to be named or not. Some people know who she is but for the sake of tumblr, I'm blurring her out. Through some of mine and her dms, there was some playful flirting going back and forth. Note on playful, by the way, but her being engaged and having a partner and telling me she thought all of it was real? Someone needs to hold her hand when they tell her this....(not me, dont let me go near that crazy woman she might K&T me too...)
But yeah, they were playful, pretty heavy flirting and it got detailed, SURE, its PLAYFUL FLIRTING. it happens. But her saying she's a "lesbian in a straight relationship"? Someone needs to hold her hand and to tell her AGAIN because this just aint it...
But she's still there, I've left the main nevermore server because of her. Because of her lies and manipulation, she has dragged others into this. People who had no involvement in this, but thats her way. She has done it before, DMing other people because she can't fight her own battles. She has to have others do it.
In the end, all I have to say is, Nora (sardonyx) is the one behind all the drama that happens, and will continue to be the one and will continue to get away with it. I highly advise to keep your distance from her , if not well...none of this would have been posted if she didn't go around acting like a 14 year old and spreading rumors about me.
Nora, if you're reading this, tell Eric i feel so bad for him to end up with someone as pathetic as you. And that the person you wanted to get freaky with found out how much of a horrible person you are. And I hope others do the same.
anyway..be careful with her or you might end up kidnapped and tortured <3
(stay safe)

2025 Book Bingo Plans
I've started planning out some of what I'm going to read for @batmanisagatewaydrug's 2025 book bingo (read more here), and to get myself hyped, I'm sharing the books I've set in stone, as well as recording some ideas I have for the other spaces!
Tumblr media
I've been looking forward to Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins for a while now, I'm interested to see if it will live up to the philosophical examination it sets itself up as.
I got the illustrated copy of Eragon by Christopher Paolini/Sidharth Chaturvedi for Christmas, so that's kind of a no-brainer for the re-read.
Heavenly Tyrant by Xiran Jay Zhao I'm also getting for Christmas, but it's the pretty Illumicrate version, so it's not getting here until January or February. I took a gamble with Iron Widow and got the hardcover, and I was not disappointed (I've read it 3 times and am going to reread it once I get HT, and will certainly reread both in the future), so I expect the fancy one will be money well spent (by my aunt but still).
I am just assuming that My Friends by Fredrik Backman is going to be set in Sweden, because all of Backman's other novels are set there. Hopefully I don't need to find a new book for the category lol. If I do this one will probably fit Literary Fiction anyway.
I've been working my way through my reread of the Hitchiker's Guide trilogy by Douglas Adams, and think I can finish the 3rd in the next few days, so I'm all set up for the 4th going into 2025 :)
I stopped reading Desert Solitaire by Edward Abbey when school got really rough last year and have wanted to go back to it for a while. It was recommended to me by my dad, and one of his favorite books. In the 100-ish pages I've read, I've found it to be amazing as well.
Things My Son Needs to Know About the World by Fredrik Backman was going to be my memoir choice until I realized it was actually essays.
I saw Death In Rocky Mountain National Park: Accidents and Foolhardiness on the Continental Divide by Randi Minetor while just wandering Barnes and Noble and was sure I had to read it when the title made it clear it wasn't going to blame animals for the actions of humans.
I've wanted to read Last Chance to See by Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine for a long time, but the concept alone has always made it a little too sad to convince myself to pick up. This year will be its year though.
I promised my roommate that I would read The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson last year so that we could watch the show for Halloween. I'm following through this year instead.....
My reasoning for Thud! by Terry Pratchett is simple. I like Discworld, I like Ankh Morpork, I like the Watch novels, I like Sam Vimes.
Below the cut are some of my ideas for the sections I haven't filled yet (anyone should feel free to send me as many recommendations for these as you want):
Literary Fiction:
All The Names by José Saramago (recommended by my dad)
The Summer Book by Tove Jansson (recommended by my roommate)
Short Story Collection:
And Every Morning The Way Home Gets Longer and Longer, The Answer is No, and The Deal of a Lifetime by Fredrik Backman (this is not technically a collection, but it is a group of short stories that I really want to read)
20th Century Speculative Fiction:
The Martian by Andy Weir (I just want to read it)
Published Before 1950:
TBD Agatha Christie novel (I stole my dad's books acquired a lot of these and want to read some)
Indie Publisher:
Something from this list
Graphic Novel, Comic Book, or Manga:
Nothing Special by Katie Cook (I read this on Webtoon as it's been coming out, it has some of the best panel transitions on the platform, and I really want to see how she translated that to book form. Also I want to own the books bc I love the story and refuse to pay Webtoon money for it)
Animal On the Cover:
A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains by Isabella Bird (I was looking at the "local" shelf (not at this book in particular though) in Barnes and Noble, and a woman (not an employee) came up to me to tell me this is one of her favorite books ever and now I must read it)
The Girl in Red by Christina Henry (I help run a blog here cataloguing books with little to no romance and/or sex in them for people who are sex/romance repulsed, and someone submitted this. I also read a book years ago that I loved, but I didn't have Goodreads even at that point, and all I really remembered was the cover and opening. I've been looking for a while, and I think this very well could be it)
City of Nightmares by Rebecca Schaeffer (I loved her Market of Monster's trilogy and the Webtoon adaptation, and have been meaning to read this for ages)
Descendent of the Crane by Joan He (recommended by my other roommate, plus I liked her book The Ones We're Meant to Find)
Going Postal by Terry Pratchett (re: the reasons for Thud!)
2025 Debut Author:
Honestly, no clue here. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it
Read a Zine and Make a Zine:

Bookseller or Librarian Rec:
Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea (in 5th grade, we did a unit where the class was split into 3rds and we each analyzed 1 book. The kids who read this book loved it. I really wanted to read it then, but never did. Then in 8th grade a librarian recommended it to me, bringing it back to my memory, but I still didn't read it. It lives on my TBR because I feel like I need to read it for 10/13 year old me)

because of the lack of female protagonists in... pretty much every genre, really, people tend to hype up a lot of series as "better than the average [insert genre]" just because it has a female protagonist rather than male
(personally i think girls deserve formulaic schlock, too, like how bofuri is basically the average MMOVR with a black haired plain looking boy repeatedly stumbling upon cheat powers except the protagonist is a girl)
but when i look for new titles saying "i want interesting worldbuilding where we get to see how this fantasy world works as a society and the court intrigue goes beyond high school level mean girl bullying" and people respond with titles like "i'm in love with the villainess" it's like asking for a grilled steak and getting handed a hamburger
burger's good, but not what i'm looking for
so here's a list of my manga/webtoon recommendations for stories of political intrigue in fantasy worlds with a female protagonist (not all of them are isekai or regression or reincarnation, most are straight up just fantasy world):
The Holy Grail of Eris
The story of a kingdom after the villainess is executed for attempting to poison the heroine beloved by the crown prince. Our protagonist is Constance Grail who finds herself being haunted by the ghost of the villainess Scarlet Castiel who saved her from suffering the humiliation of having her engagement broken because of a false accusation.
Scarlet claims that she has been framed, and together the duo is set to find out the truth regarding her death sentence.
Saying more than this would ruin the plot twists, but read this if you're interested in a story where it makes sense for a ducal daughter to be sacrificed in exchange for a lady of a lower class as the nation's queen.
Itsuwari no Freya (localized as Prince Freya)
A small kingdom struggles to defend itself against a powerful warmongering kingdom with the leadership of their cunning prince. Except, the prince has died. To prevent the flame of hope from being extinguished, the prince's inner circle employs the aid of Freya, a village maiden with the same face as the late prince.
There is no time to prepare her to learn the ropes of politics. Now Freya must plunge immediately into international turmoil and figure out a way to secure support from other nations with the help of the prince's knights and, of course, her own charisma and intelligence.
Ebony (localized as Lady Evony)
Sensational news sweeps the nation: the Grand Duke has put a criminal under his protection. Evony was accused of her father's murder and ended up suffering all kinds of abuse in the hands of the prison wardens who despise her.
Yet her time at the women's prison was also the only time she was able to gain education in a misogynistic nation who still bars women from learning while other countries have a headmistress for their famous college and traveling tradeswomen.
As she heals from the wounds inflicted both on her body and her heart, she realizes she wants to become someone who can stand equal to the Grand Duke and not just a fragile flower to be protected in his garden.
Great if you're looking for slow burn romance where the main couple are equals instead of the usual "obsessive yandere male lead who holds to power/lovely lady who struggles to be useful" or "stupid but doting male lead who needs his very smart lady to show him the way"
Also great if you're looking for a korean webtoon where all their problems CANNOT be solved by the protagonists being wealthy capitalists
The Falcon Princess
While other webtoons tend to focus on noblewomen's tea parties as a source of conflict, The Falcon Princess focuses on a kingdom in the middle of being invaded.
The protagonist is a princess on the run when the imperial palace ends up ransacked by the enemy nation. She wakes up as a falcon and ends up finding herself as her kingdom's commander's messenger bird.
Despite the language barrier, the princess helps the commander figure out the enemy's location, strategy, and various ways to defeat them and finds herself becoming a symbol of hope who leads the army into reclaiming her nation.
JK Haru is a Sex Worker in Another World
Last but not least but is definitely the most controversial pick. Haru is a girl who gets reincarnated in another world after she got hit by a truck alongside her otaku classmate.
While said otaku is living his best life as his power fantasy becomes a reality, Haru refuses to be his girl in exchange for a comfortable life, even though the only job she could have in a misogynistic world where women can't even eat at a restaurant without a chaperone is at a brothel.
And yet, she doesn't hate it. Although the customers can be rough, she befriends the other prostitutes at the brothel and figures out how to enjoy her job. It's a story that depicts sex workers with respect, acknowledging their struggles without turning it into misery porn.
It also asks an important question regarding the trope of "overpowered isekaid protagonist changes the world for the better": CAN they actually change the world just because they have cheat powers? After all, societal issue isn't something you can solve using brute force and money alone

===
The fluorescent lights flicker above you, a sign that they needed to be changed. But it doesn't bother you as you look down at your phone, admiring the art of the new manhwa your friend recommended you. It was all you could do really, enduring the cold air filling the room.
The T.V in the background also doesn’t catch your attention despite playing your favorite show.  Usually, you would abandon your phone in favor of watching the images that play on the screen, the volume just loud enough for you to hear. But the story of this novel-turned webtoon is more captivating, especially with the beautiful blond and cunning female lead scheming ways to free the silver haired male lead.
Must be nice, to be rescued.
“It’s good, isn’t it?” your friend’s voice draws your attention, grinning as they sit on the chair they pulled up to your bed. “But remember, the content is dark.” They warn for the nth time. Like that would bother you.
“Oh please, I’m not that sensitive,” you refute while rolling your eyes. “Besides, if I was, you wouldn’t have recommended it to me. We both know that.” A playful pout forms on your face as they ruffle your hair.
“Yeah,” they say, “but sometimes people change their minds, you know?”
“Like you?”
“Hey! You can barely handle gore so good luck with it.”
“Gore,” you snort. “Doesn’t bother me as much. But since I love you, I guess I’ll listen.”
They hum, retreating their hand from your hair. “You should also read the novel once you’re done with the current episodes. It adds more context and includes the stuff the webtoon left out.” Yawning, they look at the clock on the way. A mumbled complaint rumbles in their chest. “Sorry, but I have work in the morning.” They linger on the uncomfortable bed before getting up to stretch.
“Alright.” You hope they can’t hear the disappointment in your voice or the way your eyes become dull. “Make sure to text me once you get home, okay?”
They reply with a thumbs up.
It doesn’t take them long to gather their things and walk to the door, opening it. However, they don’t leave the room before looking at you. “I’ll bring your favorite snack tomorrow. As a gift.” You pretend that their grin is teasing.
“Good. I would kick you out otherwise.”
With a wave of their hand they disappear into the hallway, the door closing behind them. The room feels empty. Adjusting yourself to get comfortable, you lay on your side, leaving the T.V on.
The noise lulls you to sleep despite the gnawing loneliness pulling at your heart. Pulling the cover over your head, you close your eyes.
- - -
The dream you had the day before your public engagement announcement was what made you realize you were stuck in a fictional series.
Everything was normal when you woke up a month before it. No drama, no unfortunate accidents. The cup of tea you were enjoying that day was the sweetest you ever had, rare tea leaves that were a pain in the ass to find. But your father searched long and hard, wanting to give them to you as a happy little sweet gift. It only made sense, since it was your birthday and all.
Well, you wish it just that; a birthday gift. Instead, it was an apology gift, him refusing to look you in the eye. At the time you had just assumed he was embarrassed, not that he was being eaten away by guilt that threatened to swallow his entire being whole. The sad part was that he didn't tell you the plans for your future until after you sat down for teatime.
“...How’s the tea?” his voice had trembled but you didn’t notice it. You should have, especially with how small his voice had become, nearly a whisper. You were too caught up in your jolly mood.
“Oh, it’s sweet - like honey!” placing your cup down you raise up from your seat to hug your father who sat across from you. He became stiff before returning it, his embrace tighter than usual. You thought it was out of adoration a father would hold for his daughter. Not of the father who was signing her death papers.
“I’m glad.” When you stepped back he followed, bringing himself up to his feet. A heavy sigh that came from his chest before he finally looked into your eyes. You mistook the look of regret and horror in his for the uneasiness of your reaction towards the news. Still, he allowed himself to grab you by the shoulders.
You misplaced the trembling for excitement instead of fear.
“(Name), my daughter…” your father closed his mouth and shut his eyes tight. His grip on your shoulders tightens. Now you realize he did that so you wouldn’t run out. “I have some important news for you.”
“Oh?” you cock your head, somewhat excited and somewhat worried. You wait for him to finish.
“I…” opening his eyes he’s unable to meet your gaze. “I…found…a  fiance for you. He’s from an extremely well-off family.” He finishes but it sounds incomplete. You should have questioned him more.
“A fiance?” you asked, blinking while your mind processes the information. “Did you find him recently?” truthfully, you didn’t like the news, but you knew it would happen eventually. But you can’t deny the slight bitterness you felt, the news slightly dampening your mood on your birthday.
You got over it pretty quickly. Too quickly.
“Well, yes? Kind of. His father would talk to me sometimes, insisting that the marriage would benefit us both." He left out the part where it only meant for your father-in-law and possibly yours, too. Not for the soon-to-be bride and groom.
“I see.”
Your father looks at you in shock, asking “aren’t you upset?”
You shrug your shoulders, hiding the annoyance. “Well,” your hands grab his wrists, squeezing them to comfort him - despite how it was your future married life and not his. “I knew it was going to happen eventually. It wasn’t a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when.’"
He shakes his head, releasing a low and forced chuckle. At the time you just assumed it was from astonishment and not self-hatred. “You’re too forgiving,” he lets go of your shoulder and pulls his arms back. “But rest assured that the wedding and engagement party will be grand.”
He never mentioned how your married life would be. That you would be in good hands. That your husband will take care of you and how you’ll grow fond of him as time passes. Or how your in-laws would be lovely. He couldn’t force himself to lie to you.
Your father couldn’t tell you how the marriage would chain you to your husband’s family.
“Father, I don’t really care about that.” you laugh, softly hitting his shoulder. His expression didn’t become playful as usual. Instead it was grave and your heart painfully rattled at the sight.
“I know you don’t - but they might.. Just endure it, okay? I promise the party and ceremony will be decent, at least.”
You never thought to ask what he meant by that. Decent? Right after he called them grand?
“I’ll trust you, then.”
Little did you know that your trust would crumble away the moment you laid eyes on Dion Agriche, his face stoic and eyes glued to something past you.
-----
….why were you remembering that now? While Jeremy is running his mouth about his brother and Roxana wiping your mouth with a rag. Hana had given her the rag once she returned, stepping to the side at her orders.
Roxana offers to bring you to her room to freshen up, and your heart nearly leaps out of your chest with bliss. “It’s fine, lady Roxana,” you reject the offer, knowing that you’ll be caught in her web. Seems she’s already thinking of ways to use you. That or she genuinely felt bad.
You couldn't tell. Her facade was always perfect.
“I insist,” she smiles sweetly but it doesn’t reach her eyes. Does anyone else ever notice this? Aside from Dion?
“Just accept it already.” Jeremy cuts in, stretching his arms above his head. Odd. The boy was nearly codependent on his sister, not willing to share her attention. Yet he’s sharing it - her - with you. “Besides, it’ll give you more time to avoid that asshole.”
His words should have sounded playful, teasing, but they were filled with pure venom instead. Dion’s number two hater truly worked hard for that spot.
“I’m flattered that you’re considerate of me,” your hand raises to pat his hand only for you to swiftly bring it back down. What were you doing!? He wasn’t your brother. Nor a friend. Just someone who happened to be related to your husband.
That and a little murderous punk.
Though, you couldn’t miss the disappointment in those blue eyes. Why was he acting like this?
Jeremy stays quiet for a bit, lost in thought. Your legs start to become weak the longer he doesn’t say anything - was he going to mock you? Lash out? Turn to Roxana and say that you’re not worth anything after all?
“You deserve better than him. That’s all.” Your mind blanks. To say that so bluntly and in the open…
You just notice that Roxana stayed quiet in the background. Observing. Weighing the options.
“I…” do you agree with him? You don’t want to be with him - that much was obvious. But you’re not sure if you deserved a happy ending. Maybe a slightly better one than this, though.
You stare at him like a deer in headlights. What answer would be the best one? Agree with him only to find out it was a test? Reject his view and say that he’s the one who deserves better? Wait, why was he so involved with this in the first place.
And why did he look at you so sincerely?
You’ll get the answer for that later, or so you tell yourself. Frankly, you’re scared to find out. But curiosity always kills the cat.
“...it was a marriage arranged by our parents. If they saw that we were the best for each other, then we’ll listen. That’s how it is.” Indirectly saying you agree somewhat could be a bad idea. But you also don’t want him to think that Dion was your ideal husband.
“‘Best for each other,’ huh? Well sometimes they’re -" Roxana cuts him off.
“Jeremy,” she says, “don’t you need to get ready for practice?” She lovingly pats his head. The boy beams at her before becoming petulant - not wanting to leave his sister’s side but was obligated to.
“Right, right… it’s nothing more than free labor though.” He complains while starting to leave. If he lingered for even a bit he wouldn’t be able to drag his feet to his destination. “I’ll see you later?”
“Tomorrow,” Roxana respondes. “I have something to do.” Jeremy reminds you of a puppy with the dejected look in his eyes and small frown. But with the promise of staying with him tomorrow, he brightly grins - you could almost forget his brutal personality.
“Well then, I’ll be off.” he groans at the thought of the bothersome chore.
But before leaving, he leaves you with ‘adivce’ :
“You should escape before this place digs its claws into you. Dion included.” You’re left speechless as his figure gets smaller and smaller, watching his back as he leaves. Why were you given advice anyway? First, by Dion, now Jeremy - was this a test?
Then, you realized that it’s only you and Roxana - without your noticing, Hana had left. Ordered by Roxana, perhaps?
What was she going to add to this strange night?
“Jeremy means well.”  She doesn’t acknowledge what he said.
“Yes. Of course.” You refrain from asking her why. “It’s… a bit cute.” for now you silently add, turning your head to look at your sister-in-law.
“Mhm, he is, isn’t he?” The blond toys with a strand of her hair, dainty fingers twirling it. “Although, I must admit that he still has a lot of growing up to do.” Yes, yes he does.
“I think it’s the same for everyone at that age; even for me.” she titters with you. It was faked on both ends. Yet it was mutually accepted.
“My offer still stands.”
“Oh, but I’m fine - I'm all cleaned up.” you lie. But her offer puzzles you - what would she gain from it? And while you would love to avoid your husband for a few extra minutes, you didn’t want to owe Roxana anything. Being in her debt was the same as signing a lifetime contract.
You held no emotional importance to her. It’s only reasonable to think that she’s doing this for Jeremy’s sake. And you really, really need to find out why these characters - people were acting so weird.
“Besides, I’m sure that your brother is waiting for me.”
Her pointer finger taps against her chin in thought. Her ruby eyes look towards the side and you can’t read her expression. Beads of sweat threaten to slip down your face. You hope she doesn’t notice.
“After some thought, I realized something.” She brings up once she looks at you again. You tilt your head, confused.
“You never once referred to Dion as your husband.”

Tickletober day 3 - Cuddles
Prompts by @tickletober
I’m not sure how many of you know “Batman: Wayne Familly Adventures” but to everyone that doesn’t know it. YOUR MISSING OUT ON AN ACTUAL MASTERPIECE. Honestly I found out about it not long ago and my heart just melted 🫠. This WEBTOON is everything I wanted Bruce to be for those kids and more!! I sincerely recommend it to everyone even if you don’t really know the DC universe. (Every character has a short introduction that explains everything you need to know) Honestly if you love found family trope or fluff or anything… READ IT !! The second chapter perfectly lays out the vibe of the comic so you don’t have to go far to see if you’ll like it.
After this long introduction (I tried to keep it short I really did 😅) Happy TkTober to everyone!! 💜 (And read the comic or I’m gonna go Duolingo on you and break into your homes🗡️😈)

How should someone write for a comic? I want to start a comic but I’m a bit in the dark for how to write one
This is a very, VERY broad subject that, like the question of "how to draw comics", is very multi-faceted and impossible to tackle in one response. Especially because I myself also will not have all the answers.
What I will say is that regarding writing comics, let's say webcomics, it's not an uncommon thing in the slightest to see writers come into communities like /r/webtoons and ask for people to help them draw their passion project and to that I say... please don't LOL That's not to say that's what you were going to do at all, just wanted to throw that out there as an initial opening disclaimer. Ultimately the reality is that in webcomics, many of the people creating these projects are artists first and writers second (as one of those skillsets is way more accessible than the other), and already have their own passion projects that they're working on. So if you're going into purely writing comics, you're gonna need to manage your perspective on the industry and how it functions from a writer's POV rather than the POV of an artist who picked up writing as a consequence of wanting to get into comics.
That said, the beauty of writing comics is that, in general, it requires a lot less overhead than drawing a comic. That's not to say that it's necessarily easier, because god knows writing presents its own unique challenges, but writing a script generally takes less overhead and resources than turning that script into a comic. I can pump out 10 episodes of rough scripts for Rekindled in a day or two, with tweaking and editing along the way, but actually drawing those episodes takes weeks LMAO (and I wouldn't be able to pull off a lot of the stuff I do now without the help of my assistant @banshriek who not only provides a lot of expertise in drawing backgrounds, but lightens the workload in their help with shading and rendering! they also provide great feedback when it comes to the roughs stage <3)
So if you're starting out, just like the advice I give to budding webcomic artists, it's about starting. Build that experience, get some projects under your belt no matter the size or length that you can use to show your skills (and shop around for feedback from those willing to give it!), etc. Familiarize yourself with various genres, both writing AND reading! Like scripts for film, writing a comic script doesn't HAVE to come with the visuals even if that's the end goal, you don't HAVE to relegate yourself to finding an artist to draw your comic and then posting it online in the hopes it'll get seen. There's a lot that can be done with a simple comic script, whether it's sharing it to the world as is, adapting it to a novel, or pitching it to publishers/agents. Being a comic writer comes with a lot more flexibility in that way than being just a comic artist with no script (though, again, most indie comic artists will simply pick up writing to create their passion projects, it's a much bigger task for writers to pick up art for the sake of creating a comic).
Also establish your goals. Is your plan to write for some major industry some day? Or would you rather stick to writing for smaller productions? Just like with drawing webcomics, you should be setting your expectations in places that are reasonable to meet, rather than shooting for the top of the game right off the bat. If you're wanting to get into writing comics, your first major goal should be something like writing a complete script and NOT, say, getting to write for Marvel/DC lmao
As for the actual writing of comics, I highly recommend you read Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics, it delves into both the history and technical aspects of writing, drafting, and pitching comics in a very easy to understand way (it's a comic about making comics!)
Here are some other helpful resources I was sent by a pal recently that might also help familiarize you with the process of getting into the actual industry as a comic writer!
I hope this gives you at least a good place to start from! Again, it's ultimately a very broad topic that will vary from person to person (esp when it comes to the differences between genres and target demographics, ex. someone writing an action comic isn't likely going to use the exact same processes as someone who writes romance), but I hope this at least helps you find some direction in it all so you can establish your goals and start making steps in the direction you want to go in.
Good luck!!! <3

Roundup-Catch up: August 2024!!
Let's catch up! Looking back at my list of August reads my head spins a bit. Most of this year I got way too eager picking up series from my shelf or the library and was juggling maybe 5 series at once. Which did a huge disservice to the reading experience for some of those series as I wasn't giving them my full attention. It wasn't until August I managed to wrap up most of them and enter the more focused way of following or reading through a series that I had previously. But in the frenzy I still had some great reads.
I had always heard whispers of No Longer Heroine by Momoko Koda but I'd never crossed paths with it. But when the english run of My Love Mix-up ended I had a huge contemporary High School Romance shaped hole in my heart and this is one of the titles that's filled it (I will get to the rest). I love mess, I love stories of teenagers learning to navigate the minefield that is human relationships so I can be the opposite of nostalgic for a time that, praise be, I will never have to relive. But I also read titles like this wondering how a constructive conversation around it could be had among young readers who from my experience can come off very frustrated and unsympathetic to the type of drama it depicts where the heroine and hero's feelings and decisions are extremely irrational and reckless. I really like the Yen Press, but as a license acquisition it feels kinda random? And in my honest opinion if you're 10 years late to a title you kinda have to make it an omnibus or collectors edition because waiting for individual volumes for, again, an over 10 year old series is pretty frustrating. But I will stick around to the end.
Yumiko Ōshima's Sava series was one of my favorites of 2022. The way she captures me with stories where honestly "nothing" really "happens" just floored me and made me optimistic for Goo Goo Datte Neko de Aru. A diary comic that begins with the passing of the cat Sava and her purchase of the cat Goo Goo (Short for Good Good). But Goo Goo isn't the only cat that enters her life. In rather rapid succession stray kittens begin entering her life. We follow for over a decade her journey rescuing, rehoming, and caretaking of countless stray cats (the latter to the dismay of her neighbours). Reading it today it highlights the challenges of clashing attitudes over stray cats and how these populations should be taken care of if at all. Famously it is also a chronicle of her cancer survival journey but its a rather short part of the whole but nonetheless maintains the Ōshima charm.
I want to make a gift recommendation for the upcoming holiday season: Your Letter by Hyeon A Cho. While I've had some really really good encounters with Korean Manhwa, Webtoons is still a world unknown to me. I think the Ize Press initiative bringing Webtoons to print in english is extremely cool, but the lineup just hasn't had any titles that caught my eye. Until Your Letter. A 10 chapter single volume story that I liked so much for its artistic presentation and the story it was telling about bullying and finding your place in a new environment that I immediately was overcome with the need to pass it along, which I did. Really think it would make a great gift for anyone 5th grade and up who are interested in comics. OR it can be read for free in its entirety on Webtoon!
Satou Gashi no Ie by Kyoko Fumizuki was a title picked up a bit at random. I'd gotten a taste of her work in the Suki Desu, Kono Shoujo Manga anthology and was one of the more memorable entries in an already extremely well curated collection. Satou Gashi no Ie is a 5 story one-shot collection with to meeee back to back hits. The titular story centres on a teenage boy named Richard who suddenly appears at his childhood's friend Elsie's school with a baby in his arms, that he claims to be his, and that he's a widower. But there are too many holes in his story. Who exactly is the baby's mother and how did he come to care for her at the end of her life? And how does this change Richard and Elsie's relationship? There's a warmth to Fumizuki's artistry in this era and the way that she hits all the story beats that really drew me in and augh I honestly have no words for it. This collection really stood out and among her peers I've yet to read anyone who could compose manga exactly like this. And you know what's cool? You can (In Japanese) read this and a handful of her other work from the same era for FREE on Manga Library Z!! (JP only) NOTE: crazy enough, on this very day (Nov 26) Manga Library Z suspended services but diligent users of nyaa have made sure that the works available there live on

With the Avatar the last airbender live action lighting the zutara flame, I wanted to recommend to all Zutara fans to check out the webtoon comics called Subzero by Junepurr. It's a enemies to lover's, marriage of conveniences, fire and water romance that's perfect for all your zutara needs and it's honestly just a great read with royal court drama and an epic romance. And also there's dragons.🔥❤🌊

Historical Fiction Recommendation
A bit of an unusual post, but I recently learned about the existence of the Desert Peach comic series created by Donna Barr and I need more people to know about it because it's a true gem. A big shoutout goes to @darksideoftwenty who introduced me to this comic, otherwise I may have never even knew that it existed!
To put it simple, the story is about Rommel's fictional gay younger brother called Pfirsich (sidenote, this is literally just the German word for peach and not actually used as a name, but it's still cute😅). He is the leader of a small support unit of the Afrika Korps, which consists mostly of people that are considered "misfits" in other parts of the army. The individual stories consist of all sorts of adventures and shenanigans but also have overarching plot points.
Tumblr media
I think it's important to not let yourself fool by the potential first impression with this comic. At first glance, Pfirsich may seem like the absolute stereotype of the effeminate gay man, but there's actually so much more to him. This applies to the other characters too, as the story goes on and we get to know more about them, their personalities just become more and more well-rounded. At least since issue 3 I've been absolutely hooked.
For a comic that was written in the 80s and 90s, I was also extremely impressed how delicately it touches on and handles topics that are still relevant today, and manages to balance chaos and silliness with more serious and darker moments. Of course, not everything may be politically correct by today's standards and you should keep that in mind, but honestly I think there are pieces of media that are far more recent and still did things like this much worse.
The comic is available entirely for free on Webtoon, so if WW2 fiction is something you're into you should definitely give it a try. Apparently there was also a musical made back in the 90s that was based on the comics, but I could barely find anything related to it, I wish there existed recordings😭 Please note that although there aren't really depictions of sensitive content - injuries and (partial) nudity may occur but are usually quite simplified thanks to the art style - but due to the subject matter, it is targeted at adult audiences.
I'm currently at issue 18 and can't wait to continue reading! Here's just one small excerpt showing Pfirsich and Erwin (dancing together and I love how small it makes Erwin look xD), their brother relationship is hilarious and just absolutely adorable <3

Webtoon comics I think are underrated.
Now, I just want to make it clear that when I say “underrated” I don’t mean as if it isn’t heard of or been read, just that it’s underrated in the sense that nobody talks about it, makes posts about it, fanfics, fan arts, etc.
…and if you haven’t read these then I highly recommend you do!!! It’s so worth it, trust! I’ll add in a little review too!
1. DEATH: Rescheduled (Thriller)
The story in short is about a world where you have the Kill Law, a law where you are legally allowed to kill one person a year, no consequences. However the “Penny” Kreyul and his friends disagree with the Kill Law and are going to put an end to it no matter what.

Death: rescheduled had me so captivated that I refused to sleep before I finished reading. I even spent money on this shit because it was so entrancing! My favourite episode was by far 66, it was so funny and it builds up ships and just pure wholesomeness of the group.
The characters all have great personalities, the story is amazing and omg the art is so beautiful. You’ll love it.
2. Sable Curse (Fantasy)
This story follows a young girl named Tarron, a girl who is cursed and will die in 6 months. Her (honestly abusive) parents decide to take her and her sister to a holiday retreat. There she ends up finding new friends, herself, potential love, and maybe even a cure for her curse. But as it turns out, she’s not the only one cursed either.
Tumblr media
This story is amazing! The art is wonderful, the characters are perfect, some we hate, some we love. We learn throughout the story more about this curse, and even about this special holiday retreat. There is so much mystery to uncover and it is one of my favourite webcomics.
Now, I’ve heard that most people have actually read it, but I encourage that we make a proper fandom for this series!
3. Marionetta (Fantasy)
Two best friends decide to go out and visit the travelling circus. However after a while Julia’s best friend Kamille disappears. Julia is determined to find her again and hunts down the circus, where her best friend is now living. Julia is still going to bring her home and end up losing something very valuable. Her life. For this circus is for the dead. Now Julia has to uncover the true secrets behind the circus whilst still trying to bring her and Kamille home. Will she manage? Or will she have to kill Anthonn Gremminger to save her life?

When I tell you this webcomic is a roller coaster of emotions. There are plenty of ships to chase, characters to stan, and many theories to explore. I love this webcomic so bloody much and I was actually surprised that there wasn’t a lot posted about it.
This is such a cool and dark story, with lovely and cute art. I could talk about it for hours.
4. After School Activities For Unripe Apples (Drama)
A wholesome slow burn between Mi-ae and an old childhood friend, Cheol. When another year starts and Mi-ae needs to take school more seriously the son of the family friends shows up in her class, but now seen as Lucifer, a hostile boy who ends fights - but is that the boy Mi-ae remembers? Who she know knows and loves?
Tumblr media
This is a cute, funny and entertaining webcomic. You would think that things would be so simple, however due to school, parents, and other issues the characters face of themselves and others, it is difficult to understand and accept your own feelings. This is exactly why I love this series so much, it’s relatable and adorable. We especially love Mi-ae.
There are a few fanfics out there, but honestly where is the love it deserves??
5. My universe (Romance)
Apart from the normal college life Hayeon lives, she has this special gift.. she can communicate with the universe. She ends up communicating with an alien, who she gives the name Ujun. They want to be able to actually meet each other, but alas that is nearly impossible. But imagine the surprise when Ujun ends up taking over the body of one of Hayeons classmates, and crush, Hyeonsu. Now they must figure out a way to send him back whilst still spending some time together. However the peacefulness and secrets can’t be kept as the aliens are taking over. What will Hayeon do now? And can she even trust Ujun anymore?
Tumblr media
Now this story deserves its own universe fr. The art is super cute as is the story, however things get more complicated as the story progresses. When I was still reading this the first thing I would do in the morning is read the next episode as soon as I got the daily pass because it was so good! Obviously I’m not going to spoil the ending, however the waves of emotions this series brings you is inhuman.
All in all it’s a fantastic webcomic that deserves so much love and attention!
6. Stray Souls (Fantasy)
In a world of magic and string weaving, some are fortunate and some are not. Eylin isn’t particularly good at string weaving, however that doesn’t stop her and her friends from stopping the wicked and doomed Amethyst King. Follow along the difficulty journey with friendship, love, and a whole lot of mystery. But what is it all worth in the end?
Tumblr media
Holy moly this story is AMAZING. The plot is genius and the art is fantastic, the characters are so original and all have such amazing personalities!! Although, it’s a bit hard to keep track of them all😭 still love them all.
All in all it’s so amazing and has so much potential to be incredibly popular, yet there is no fandom!? Give it attention!!
7. Spirit Fingers (Drama)
Adorable Amy Song is incredibly self conscious and insecure. She has no support and no confidences, however after stumbling upon an art club drawing each other and their wacky poses - she ends up becoming their model too. After meeting a cute guy and getting his number she enters the group herself! This group accepts her with love and so much care, and she finally starts to feel more confident in herself and her art! She might even get a boyfriend!

This is quite literally the cutest and most heartwarming webcomic I’ve read in a while. And there is no one talking about it!!’ It’s been around for sooooo long too!!! When I tell you I cry, and laugh, and smile so hard at every chapter!! If you love a heartwarming, coming of age, and found family comic - then this is perfect!! And the art is beautiful!! It’s a perfect read for artists!!
Miss Amy is literally so relatable for those who don’t feel very pretty or have any sorts of insecurities regarding looks or academics. It’s a beautiful, long, and mostly free (if you’re fine with ads) comic, and it’s the best thing I’ve ever found.
Now! So far this are all the webcomics that come to mind! I think all of these are great and I just know that so many more will enjoy these if they gave them a chance.
I’d love to talk about these with other people, and I’d even love it if others would like to share some webcomics they believe are underrated too.
All of these comics are from Webtoon, and are so worth your time! Please let me know if there was anything I missed.
(I might add more in the future 😉)
Edit: sadly the pictures are now a little awkward and too big for my liking… but I hit the limit of 10 pictures 😔🙏
💗- Anyways lots of love!
