The echo of the dead
Scott Barringer x Fem!reader
Jepeers Creepers!AU
Terror, angst
Warnings: Explicit deaths (not Scott or reader), panic attack, a demonic creature hunting and killing teenagers (Scott being a great, protective boyfriend)
Author’s Note: I just LOVE this movie — it’s one of my favorite classic horror films. So I thought, “Why not mix two things I adore?” In this imagine, I changed a bit of the original plot and also renamed one of the main characters, Scott Braddock, to Jack, just so your beautiful little heads don’t get confused. Hope you enjoy!!
It was supposed to be just a school trip for the basketball team.
In broad daylight, everyone was excited—Scott and the other guys were singing loudly, while Minxie, Rhonda, Chelsea, and I laughed at their antics. Everything was going well. Everything was fine. Until that bone-made throwing star pierced one of the bus tires.
Now, the sun had vanished from the sky, replaced by a deep darkness, illuminated only by the moon and stars. That horrid creature was flying above us, over the bus—which was now completely destroyed: shattered windows, the roof torn open by a grotesque drill, and our friends’ bodies scattered on the ground, mercilessly killed.
Scott, Rhonda, Jake, Minxie, and I were crouched between the seats. Rhonda was hiding with Jake in the aisle ahead of us, and Minxie was in the seats beside us. Scott’s arms were around me, trembling, just like I was. Both my hands covered my mouth, trying to prevent any sound from escaping. My cheeks were wet with tears that wouldn’t stop falling—tears of pure fear.
I flinched at every little noise—the distant crack of something breaking, the sound of the wind hitting the broken windows, the metallic creak coming from the roof. Everything made me shudder. Scott held me tighter, as if he wanted to protect me from all of it. I felt him gently press his face against the side of my head and, with a slow and tender kiss, he whispered in my ear:
“We’re going to be okay. We’ll get out of here, I promise…”
He lifted one hand and began to gently stroke my hair; his touch was almost like an antidote to the panic. I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to hold back the sobs threatening to explode inside me, and just nodded, too scared to speak. A muffled sob escaped, low and stifled between my fingers.
Then, the ground trembled slightly. The bus vibrated entirely, as if something very heavy had landed on it. The silence that followed was dense, suffocating. Everyone held their breath at the same time.
Then, like a nightmare taking shape, he appeared.
The deformed silhouette of the Creeper emerged through the rear window, his eyes glowing a sickly red under the moonlight. The creature pressed its monstrous face against the cracked glass, scanning the bus’s interior, sniffing out fear. Panic was immediate. Everyone stood up at once, running toward the front exit, bumping into seats, shoulders, and stumbling in desperation.
Jake was pulling the door latch hard, but it was stuck, as if fear had materialized there too, in the details. Rhonda looked back—and her choked scream came out as a ragged sob. The Creeper was now inside the bus, crawling upside down along the ceiling like a hellish spider. Its clawed feet scraped the metal, making a sharp, cutting sound.
“Hurry, Jake!” Scott shouted, going to help him.
With a dry snap and painful creak, the door finally opened, revealing the night. A strong wind blew into the bus, as if calling them.
“Run!” Jake shouted, pulling Rhonda by the hand.
We all ran into the field, our feet sinking into the uneven ground, not looking back, thinking only of escaping that cursed creature. The bus was left behind like a war scene, a tomb of memories we’d never forget.
And the Creeper… he was coming after us.
He exited through the opening in the bus roof—that grotesque drill he had created—and watched us as if we were mere pieces in his demonic game. The Creeper’s eyes scanned the field with sadistic calm, as if he knew that no matter where we ran, he would eventually find us.
Scott held my hand tightly, keeping me close as we ran side by side. Our feet sank into the dry, rough ground. We were silent, but terror roared inside. Then we heard the sound. The unmistakable sound of wings cutting through the wind. Strong. Fast.
I didn’t have the courage to look back.
I just kept running, aimlessly, until we spotted a seemingly abandoned barn in the distance. It was old, with creaking wood and broken windows—but it looked like a refuge.
Suddenly, behind us, I heard a strangled scream, a sound that cut through the air and made my blood instantly freeze. My body stopped instinctively, and I turned around. And there they were. Rhonda and Jake, my friends… their necks pierced by those same bone-made throwing stars—the same ones that had punctured the bus tires earlier.
A desperate scream escaped my throat, involuntary. Tears flooded my vision, and for a moment, I couldn’t move.
“Run!” Scott shouted, pulling me back to reality. “Let’s go!”
I ran.
We entered the barn, breathless, consumed by a fear that no longer fit in our chests. We desperately searched for a place to hide until we found a corner between hay bales and loose boards—a narrow, tight space that would protect us for now. We squeezed in there, clinging to each other.
It was only when the adrenaline began to subside that everything hit me at once.
I started to cry. They weren’t silent tears; they were trembling, uncontrolled sobs. My whole body shook as scenes of the deaths replayed in my mind: the blood splattering, the echo of the dead, the screams that still echoed in my ears. Each one was a memory too painful to bear.
Scott hugged me tightly, wrapping his arms around me. He lowered his head and rested it against mine, not saying a word for a few seconds, just breathing with me. He was comforting me, but I knew… he had lost friends too. He was also shattered inside. But even so, he was protecting me. He was putting his pain aside to take care of mine.
I felt him take off his team jacket and place it over my shoulders, wrapping me up. It was warm, smelled like him—earth, sweat, and something familiar. I was trembling less now.
“I’m here with you…” he whispered, almost like a prayer.
We stayed like that for hours. Sitting on the cold floor, leaning against the aged wooden boards, holding onto each other as if we were the last refuge for one another. The night outside seemed endless.
At some point, my eyes began to grow heavy. My sobs ceased, turning into broken sighs. I dozed off there, on Scott’s chest, while he absentmindedly ran his fingers through my hair, staying awake, watching, protecting.
A dry noise outside—a mix between the creak of a stepped-on board and the muffled dragging of feet—startled me awake. My body reacted before my mind could understand what was happening. I sat up with a jolt, heart racing, and looked at Scott, who was already on high alert. He slowly rose, crouching, eyes fixed on the barn entrance. He extended an arm backward, creating a protective barrier, keeping me hidden behind him.
My breath caught in my throat. The ensuing silence seemed eternal—until two figures emerged from the shadows.
“It’s us!” said a muffled, almost desperate voice.
It was Chelsea, her face dirty, eyes brimming with tears. And right behind her, Andy, also breathless, clothes torn with dirt and sweat, his face covered in blood.
An overwhelming relief washed over me. I stood up, staggering, and before any words were spoken, Chelsea ran to me and hugged me tightly, holding me against her chest.
“I thought you were dead…” she whimpered against my shoulder, squeezing me as if to make sure I was real.
“I thought you guys…” my voice faltered, and all I could do was hug her back with all the strength I had left.
On the other side, Scott quickly embraced Andy, and without wasting time, he whispered urgently:
“Minxie found help. A man—I think it’s the Taggarts. They’re on the other side of the field.”
The mention of Minxie being alive made my chest tighten. Scott looked at me with determination, wrapped his arm around my waist, and helped me stand up completely.
“Let’s go,” he said without hesitation.
We left the barn quickly, careful not to make too much noise. The stars still blanketed the sky, but a faint gray glow was beginning to stretch along the horizon—dawn wasn’t far off.
The moment we stepped into the open field, my body froze.
There he was. The Creeper.
His grotesque, twisted body lay motionless on the ground. A long spear pierced straight through his chest, pinning him into the grass. Standing beside the creature was an older man with a hardened expression and eyes locked on the monster—old Taggart. Even wounded, he held the spear firm, his gaze steady with the resolve of someone who had waited a long, long time for this moment.
Around him, the few kids who had made it out alive were falling apart. Minxie was on her knees, hands over her face, crying softly. The others whispered, some in shock, some trying to comfort each other—but none of them looked like they truly believed we’d survived.
The tense silence was broken by a hoarse, guttural shout—Taggart.
He gripped the spear with both hands, arms trembling from the effort, eyes locked on the fallen creature. The Creeper didn’t move, but that didn’t satisfy him. With a roar full of years of hate, he drove the spear deeper into the monster’s chest.
And again.
And again.
Each stab came with a wet, sickening sound—bones snapping, flesh—or whatever passed for it—being ripped apart. It was brutal. Merciless. But no amount of revenge could ever bring back the ones we’d lost.
I couldn’t keep watching.
I turned my face away, eyes clamped shut. The tears came before I even noticed—tears of sorrow, of injustice… for my friends who would never come back, for the screams still echoing in my head, for the memories I’d give anything to erase.
I felt Scott’s big, warm hands gently touch my face. He cupped my cheeks like I was made of glass, pulled me into him, and kissed my forehead over and over again with a tenderness that broke something inside me.
“It’s over,” he whispered against my skin. “It’s over, Y/N. We’re safe now… you’re safe.”
His voice trembled just slightly. I knew he was crying on the inside too, even if he tried to stay strong for me.
That’s when Minxie, still kneeling in the grass, her eyes locked on the fallen creature, spoke—softly, distantly, like she was in a trance:
“He’s not dead… he’s just sleeping.”
“He’ll be back… twenty-three springs from now.”
Everyone turned to her. The air seemed to freeze.
Old Taggart, hands still resting on the spear driven into the Creeper’s chest, looked at us. His face was sweaty, lined with age, and calm with the weight of someone who’d already made peace with his purpose.
“Twenty-three years from now,” he said, voice steady. “I’ll be right here waiting for him. With this aimed straight at his face.”
The field went quiet again.
Only the sound of wind rustling through the trees remained—a dark whisper of what was still to come.
Scott turned back to me, his eyes red from exhaustion and emotion. He didn’t say a word, just pulled me into his arms like the world was still falling down around us and I was the only thing that mattered. The hug wasn’t rushed or desperate—it was steady. Like someone holding on to what they’d nearly lost for good. I buried my face in his chest, breathing in his warmth, his scent, the impossible sense of safety in such a broken night.
And there, in the middle of that field, surrounded by silence and loss, we stayed.
Just two survivors learning how to breathe again.

okay, so I want to make a post going over and explaining my OC universe. it is currently called "Mortal" (as i currently see it as a tv show) but that's probably subject to change. actually, a lot of this is subject to change as time goes on and I develop my story, but here's what I have for now!
anyways, thanks if anyone reads this and i hope i can explain things and make them make sense lol. disclaimer that i am NOT a worldbuilder, i just love characters and love making them interact. i love my guys!!!!
General Setting:
In the Mortal universe, there is the Celestial Realm (where the gods and angels reside) and Earth (same as our modern day earth). The humans on Earth are unaware of the existence of the realm, but the gods control elements on Earth nonetheless.
I made my gods inspired by greek mythos, so each one controls a different element on earth (ie god of war, god of fire, god of nature, etc). Each god has their own set of angels that they themself created, and the angels serve as sort of... servants for the gods, fulfilling their duties or "jobs", but they're also seen as pretty objects/pets to dress up and parade around (think of the pearls from SU), so they tend to have very little agency.
Angels have different rankings: Seraphs are high ranking and are kept at the heels of their respectful god. Regular angels are in the middle, fulfilling their duties and running society. Demons are low ranking angels, cast out for one reason or another and demoted to the ranking of demon as a punishment, made to do tasks deemed unsightly for higher ranks, and are generally treated pretty poorly, even by other angels. (side note: demons are identified by their broken halos, having jagged edges instead of a solid ring of connected horns)
also, there are MANY hundreds of gods and angels in this universe, but I only focus on a select few because I'll be damned if I make that many characters LOL.
Characters:
okay let me actually get to the characters of this story lol. I should also mention all of the gods and angels in my story are genderless, so I will be using they/them for all of them, but any pronouns are absolutely fine!
Saturna
(2nd image is an example of Saturna's angels)
Saturna is the god of the gods, having created the celestial realm and earth. They are a recluse, quick tempered, and a control freak. They have a deep love for all of their creations, but seldom know how to express it beyond making sure everyone is "perfect" in their eyes.
Saturna's personal angels are known as "Saturna's Own". They are the most powerful angels in the realm, and Saturna treats them as such, spoiling them and allowing their angels to get away with things even when its their fault (this will be important for later in the story).
Adoryx
Adoryx is the god of love, and the creator of my characters Abaddon and Luvrina.
Adoryx is rather unserious, whimsical, a bit ditzy and emotional at times, but still respected among the gods. They tend to dote on their angels a little too much, but rarely take the feelings of their creations very seriously, still seeing the angels as nothing more than little pets. Though they sometimes show favoritism, specifically towards Abaddon.
Luvrina (or just Rina)
(angel form + human form)
Rina is a high seraph under Adoryx's command, and also Abaddon's twin. They portray themself as overly friendly, bubbly, and in control, but their relentless smiles and sickly sweet talk usually come off as creepy and intimidating. They are a stickler for the rules and take their job as seraph very seriously, willing to throw others under the bus to save their own ass. They strive to be seen as the "perfect" angel, and will do anything to keep up that image.
This will be explained further down, but Rina is the antagonist of this story. When Abner is sent to Earth to redeem themself, Rina is tasked with following them and keeping an eye on them, making sure Abner is doing what they're supposed to. Rina doesn't skip a beat in attempting to sabotage Abner in their endeavors.
Abaddon (Abner)
(angel form + human form)
Abner is one of the two main protags of this story! They are vain, brash, and would rather die than be emotionally vulnerable. They tend to care little for people around them, but their one soft spot is Rina, who they are the closest to (at least for a while...).
Abner was created (alongside Rina) to serve under Adoryx many eons ago. For a while, they were obedient to the gods, but once they got a taste of Earth, they started to think "is this really all there is? am I going to be a servant forever?". Despite their growing doubts, they begrudgingly fulfilled their duty as a high seraph, but found respite when they were allowed occasional trips down to Earth as a guardian angel.
Their story kicks off when one day an angel from Saturna's Own heckles Abner out of nowhere, leading to a rather violent scuffle where Abner loses control of their strength and ends up killing the other. Saturna finds out about this and, enraged, threatens to kill Abner for harming one of their own. Adoryx manages to talk down Saturna, begging for Abner's life, and instead Saturna punishes Abner by demoting them to demon and banning them from ever stepping foot on Earth again.
Abner lives out their punishment for a while. They are ridiculed, their story being spun by Saturna to make it seem as if Abner was the instigator, and everyone believes they committed this act on purpose. Even Rina, their closest friend, believes this story and proceeds to distance themself from Abner, even going so far as to ostracize and talk down to them at any chance they get. Abner is truly left with no one to trust or lean on in these times.
After some time, they go to Adoryx and beg them to talk to Saturna. Adoryx reluctantly agrees, somehow convincing Saturna to give Abner a chance to redeem themself. If Abner is successful in their mission as a guardian angel, their status will be restored, but if they fail, well...
Thatcher Black
Here's the other protag, Thatcher!!
Thatcher is a Christian Priest in his 30's. He's a very kind, caring, and detrimentally compassionate man, willing to do anything for anyone, but this tends to let people easily take advantage of him. He's a very anxious person, constantly seeking other's approval, even when he has to bend over backwards for it, seeing himself as someone responsible for taking on other people's stress, but never voicing his own. He's a very "I can fix them" type.
Abner is tasked with being Thatcher's guardian angel, and their meeting goes...interestingly. Thatcher's worldview is shattered when Abner reveals that the almighty "God" is not real, and never has been, leading Thatcher into a spiral, and over time this breakdown forces him to leave the church, feeling as though he is lying to everyone (and himself) when preaching his sermons. He deals with it the best he can, trying to piece himself back together after this revelation, but it's definitely something hard to recover from. Oh, and on top of everything, he has to deal with Abner being the worst roommate ever.
Abner drags Thatch into all sorts of (a lot of the time) dangerous or unpleasant situations, much more preoccupied with living it up and partying on Earth than taking care of him. Despite Abner's crude and uncaring nature, Thatcher ends up head over heels in love with the angel, wrapped around their finger and willing to do anything for them. I'm not sure if Abner returns these feelings, but the two definitely form a...bond, of some sort. Sort of teetering between romantic, platonic, dysfunctional, and unlabeled. Toxic yaoi, if you will.
The story mostly revolves around Thatcher and Abner's shenanigans and their growing, messy relationship, but the general plot of Abner dealing with the feelings of their incident is important as well! I just tend to focus way more on the "romance" aspect because its fun for me lol.
Spoilers, I guess, but I feel its an important story beat: Thatcher dies at the end! I go back and forth on the actual cause, but I feel it has to be by Abner's hand in some way (a complete freak accident, though), just for that delicious full circle story and tragedy <3
okay. i think thats all..........again, thank you SO MUCH to anyone who reads this!!! i appreciate the fuck outta anyone interested in my characters especially Thatch and Abner because they are very dear to me! 💚

Headcanon idea: Reader has had a bad week and ask his boyfriend (Pedros boys) to maybe look after them and sing to him. How would each character respond?
I’m just gonna do some of my favorite Pedro characters since none were listed. Hope that’s alright. Thanks for the request! 💚
Pairings: Pedro Pascal Characters x Male!Reader
Warnings: None!
Content: Headcanons, Fluff, Comfort
A Bad Week
Joel Miller
You came back to Jackson, beat up and tired. You opened the front door to see Joel reclining on the couch. He got up as soon as he saw you. You throw your pack down and prepare to be yelled at for being so reckless. But Joel would only pull you into a warm embrace. He looked upset. He moves his hands up to the side of your face and presses a gentle kiss to your forehead.
“Are you alright, darlin’?”
Joel asks and you shake your head.
“I feel like I was just hit by a bus.”
You said honestly, leaning in to hug Joel again. He accepted and started moving backwards to the couch. He lays down carefully, pulling you with him, and making sure to avoid any sore spots you have. He moves a hand up to run through your hair and trace patterns on your back. You would fall asleep in his arms and he would stay in and relax with you the next day.
Agent Whiskey/Jack Daniels
Jack had been gone for a month, off on a mission for the Statesman. You had been drowning in paperwork all week and you just wanted to go home and cuddle up with a bottle of whiskey and drink yourself to sleep. You finished your last paper, relief written all over your face, and got up from your desk. Your back and neck were sore and throbbing from sitting at a desk all day. You grabbed your coat before leaving the building and driving home. You pulled into the driveway and noticed that Jack’s car was parked in front of the house. You smiled before turning off the engine and climbing out of the car.
You walk up to the house and see that the door was already unlocked. So you walk in and put your keys away.
“Jack?”
You call out to your boyfriend. You hear rustling in the kitchen so you shuffle over. You see Jack standing at the counter with a whiskey bottle in hand. You grin and hug him from behind, nuzzling into his shoulder.
“Welcome home, sugar.”
Jack said, his tone playful.
“Did you miss me, sweetheart?”
He asked before turning around in your arms.
“Desperately.”
You said with a smile. You leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to Jack’s lips before taking the bottle from his hand. You took a swig, grimaced, and set the bottle down on the table.
“Jeez, I can see you’ve had a rough day just by the bags under your eyes.”
Jack says, putting his hands on your hips.
“Rough week actually. Been drowning in paperwork for days.”
You roll your eyes and he kisses the tip of your nose.
“How ‘bout I try and make it better.”
Jack grins and moves in closer.
“Go ahead.”
You laugh and wrap your arms around his neck.
Javi Gutierrez
It has been a stressful week for both of you. You finally got a day off and it didn’t take much convincing for Javi to stay home as well. You woke up in an empty bed, Javi had already gotten up. You still felt tired but you probably couldn’t fall asleep without Javi next to you.You got up and lumbered out of the bedroom to see Javi making breakfast. He didn’t notice that you had walked in so you stood in the doorway and watched him with a smile. It took him a few minutes for him to spot you in the doorway.
“Buenos días cariño!”
You smiled at him.
“Good morning love.”
Javi jogged up to you and pressed a soft kiss to your temple. He gave you a bright smile before making you a plate and sitting down at the table with you. The two of you ate in a comfortable silence with Javi looking over at you every now and then. You helped clean up before Javi made you sit down on the couch.
“We have the whole day to ourselves. What do you want to do?”
You knew that Javi wanted to have a movie marathon for a while and you just wanted a break from work. So you suggested it.
“How about a movie?”
Javier lit up. That was the exact answer he wanted. He put on a movie and cuddled into your side on the couch. The two of you spent the rest of the day watching movies and relaxing.
Javier Peña
You flopped down on the couch with a huff. Another day. Another lead that goes nowhere. Being a detective was hard and Javier knew that you took your job very seriously. But he wished that sometimes you would give yourself a break. You had gotten home from the precinct an hour ago and you hadn’t moved from your spot on the couch since then. Javier looked up from the files on the table and saw that you still hadn’t moved. You hadn’t said a word either. Javier loved to hear how your day went and the silence was eating him up.
“Are you okay, baby?”
Javier asked, sounding slightly worried. You stayed quiet, not bothering to speak. You were tired and stressed and you just wanted this case to be over so you could get it out of your head. Javier got up and walked over to the couch. He knelt down and brushed a hand through your mussed hair. You kept your eyes closed and your mouth shut. Javier knew that you weren't asleep but he kept quiet anyway. He slowly rubbed circles on your back and whispered comforting things to you. He needed to make sure you were alright before he could do any of his work.
“You need me to get you anything?”
Javier asked, knowing he probably wouldn’t get a response. But to his surprise, you shook your head. No words but a response nonetheless. He smiled softly before kissing your forehead and getting back to the table. He turned on your favorite TV show before he got back to work. The small things Javier did for you always made you feel appreciated. You finally got up from your prone position on the couch and walked over to Javier. You kissed the top of his head and walked back into the bedroom. Although it was a stressful week, you were glad you had Javier with you to make it better.
Din Djarin
Another bounty caught. This one took you days to find. You turned in the bounty and started back to your ship. You could think of nothing except getting back to Nevarro. You missed your boys. Once you got back, Grogu was the first one to greet you. He babbled happily when you hopped out of your ship.
“Hey buddy. Did you behave while I was gone?”
You asked the little guy as he hobbled over to you. You picked him up happily and looked around, knowing that Din would be close by. He was sitting on the porch of your shared little house. He was watching you and Grogu and you knew he had a smile on his face even through his helmet. You put Grogu down, letting him follow behind you when you went to go sit with Din on the porch. You let out a sigh as you sat down next to him.
He turned his head to face you. Neither of you had to say anything. He knew you had a rough week just by the look on your face and the tone of your voice when you talked to the kid. You leaned your head back against the house and took a deep breath in. Din grabbed your hand and held it in his. He had taken off his gloves. You let the deep breath out and smiled. You were home.
I'm just now realizing that the request included singing. I am so sorry. I didn't read that until I went through my inbox. Again hope this is alright 😅

Step By Step Ep 2 Stray Thoughts
Last week, we met my new favorite Gay in Pat, and the biggest man we've ever seen in BL in Jeng. Pat is a new employee in the digital department of a large company, and he seems to get a lot of the shit jobs. Jeng is their new manager, and may be the son of the company owner. Pat is going to have beef with his superior, Ying, who tends to thrust her work on him. Pat is so gay and definitely attracted and attractive to Jeng. I'm excited to see where this goes.
Love it. Jeng has taken control of the department because he wants to keep the department viable and keep everyone's jobs. They all hatin' on him and he's got their backs.
I am not someone who does good work with people hovering over me while also under time pressure.
Throwing someone under the bus in a meeting like this generally just makes everyone look bad. I totally get Pat sniping back at her, even if that's also a bad look.
Pat was legit about to swing on this dude for haranguing him.
Pat crying in a stall after being berated repeatedly is so real. Pent up stress from feeling disrespected will do that.
They're literally in a meeting about how they need to work together more, and are cheering because they think Pat will be reprimanded or fired.
They're using the audio really well to keep us informed of Pat's current mental state.
I like Jeng getting Pat out from under his seniors to work on a new project.
There goes that energy. They're still being catty at lunch.
It was a genuine relief to see Pat work successfully with Nan on his presentation. It's amazing how quickly people bounce back when you treat them with professional respect and courtesy.
Do these other folks have nothing better to do than worry about what Pat is up to?
I think Jeng's feedback on the PowerPoint is all valid, but because Pat doesn't really have a holistic vision of his role none of it is connecting for him. He just heard that he's still doing a bad job.
Also, I feel like Jeng should talk to Nan about rumors and not Pat.
UP POOMPAT!!!!! WELCOME BACK!
I don't know what Put and Pat had before, but that was awkward as hell.
"I always have to be dramatic." Me too, Ae. She seems suspicious about Put.
I like sending yourself flowers to tamp down on rumors.
Curious that Pat trusts Nan enough with the fact that he's gay, even though he (very understandably) doesn't want to come out at work.
I'm loving the way Pat's professional life keeps clashing with things in his private life. I suspect Put wanted to be closeted as his star rose, and it became a breaking point for him and Pat. Now he unexpectedly runs into him giving a presentation at a work event.
I'm wondering where Pat went when he left Thailand.
Pat should not have gone rogue in this meeting. You don't blindside your superior like that.
I wish they'd let Pat beat the shit out of this guy. He keeps fucking with Pat and needs to taste some fists.
Jeng has a good seme stance.
Jeng does not seem to deal well with all of these emotions. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem to appreciate how worn out Pat is by this hostile working environment.
Hey, now, Pat, don't break your laptop because you're mad. How many times do I have to tell y'all to break your enemy's shit and not your own??
I like Poppy's character. They probably shouldn't be this trashed doing a performance interview, but this scene is surprisingly fun.
I'm excited for the fallout of this peer review.
This show is really fantastic so far. It's been nice having a workplace show that feels grounded in the workplace as the primary setting and as the source of most of the complications and obstacles. I also really like that Pat feels gay in a recognizable world context. I also got to see Up today, and he looked so sad with his yearning after Pat.

You spit a mouthful of blood into the snow before you even thought about turning the doorknob. Any random passerby would look at you and think you were attempting to rob the place. You couldn't say you disagreed, though: your hood was pulled over your head and you held a tire iron in your singular non-bleeding hand.
You knew it wasn't wise to let the old-money Baltimore socialites catch you in such a compromising position, but you had to double-check your mental map of the house one more time. Hannibal would undoubtedly be cooking; hopefully so in his element that he wouldn't notice you slipping by. Will was the one you had to worry about. When it came to you, he'd become as alert as a German shepherd with protective instincts to match. Where he was in the house was anyone's guess, so you needed to be on guard.
You removed your heavy boots and opted to leave them outside. You then tossed the tire iron behind a nearby planter and slowly, quietly turned the knob. The door creaked as it opened, making you cringe. The sight of neither of your partners immediately running up on you was a bit of a relief; you hadn't been discovered quite yet.
You just needed to make it upstairs so you could barricade yourself in the master bathroom and use that oh-so-rare sliver of privacy to cover up your bruises. Then you could climb down the trellis, grab your shoes and make a proper entrance with hello kisses and whatnot.
"[F/N]?" Hannibal called out before you could even breach the threshold.
With no thought on your mind other than "fuck", you turned your head away from the direction you heard him. "Yeah, I'm home."
"I'd rush to give you a kiss, but I'm a little tied up at the moment." He said, undoubtedly grinning to himself as he trussed a chicken with sturdy cooking wire. "So you'll have to come to me."
"Oh, yeah." You called back. "Let me just get cleaned up first."
"If you insist." He said with a dramatic dip in his voice. "But hurry right back. Dinner is almost ready."
Hurdle one was cleared. Now all you had to do was clear the second, much higher hurdle.
You ascended the stairs, but forgot to skip that one consistently creaky step that always alerted the dogs. A small army of dogs came pouring into the upstairs hallway, blocked only by the baby gate Hannibal had installed as a compromise. Enthusiastic barks filled the foyer as you desperately tried to calm them down from the top step.
"Winston! Max! Harley!" You rattled off as many names as you could remember. "Hush, please!"
"[F/N]?" Will said, turning the corner.
You momentarily considered throwing yourself down the stairs. It would be easier to explain the bruises and you could still soak up that sweet, sweet throuple affection without having to tell a story that even you didn't entirely believe. Common sense, however, kept your feet firmly on the ground.
Will appeared in your line of sight. You pulled the brim of your hat down and stuffed your hands into your pockets. "I, uh- forgot how to open the gate again."
The dogs parted in Will's path and he looked at you with suspicion as he effortlessly opened the gate. "Is everything okay?"
You turned your head to the side. "I'm fine. It's just really cold outside."
"I'm sure those wet clothes aren't helping." Will cocked his head. "We can start by throwing that hoodie in the dryer-"
Before you could pull away, he pushed your hood and your hat off in one fluid motion. He knew what was going on.
"I'm no doctor, but I don’t think busted noses and black eyes are side effects of low body temperature." He said, folding his arms.
You put your hand up, unintentionally revealing the bruises on your knuckles. "You learn something new every day."
You tried to scoot past him, but he grabbed your hand and pulled you back.
"[F/N]--" Will said, a blistering fury beginning to percolate in his chest. "Who did this to you?"
"I ran into a bus stop." You lied, not even trying to make it sound believable.
"That bus wouldn't have happened to be headed to Dacula, would it?"
Your silence spoke louder than any excuse you could think of.
Will sighed. "Right. I think I know what happened."
"Will, I-" you protested.
"Save it for dinner." He scolded. "I'm sure Hannibal would love to hear this."
You'd been found out it was much worse than anticipated. You felt like you were on trial, which, given the circumstances, you could have actually been on trial in a real court of law on the charge of aggravated assault. However, that didn’t make you feel any better.
Hannibal demanded an explanation and couldn't wait until dinner. He was willing to let one of his culinary masterpieces burn in the oven, knowing of course that a much rarer delicacy was in the cards once you gave him a name.
He brushed his finger over an open cut under your eye. A light click of his tongue reached your ears as he examined your face.
"Give us a name, love." Hannibal probed, holding your jaw between his fingers and following the trail of bruises down your neck. "Who did this to you?"
"It's not a big deal, really." You assured him, squirming against his grip. "I started it."
"Now that, I find hard to believe." Hannibal contested. "You're not a preemptive strikes kind of person."
"Nor would you go all the way to Dacula to throw a few punches." Will added, approaching you with an ice pack.
"Okay, so maybe I finished it." You corrected.
Hannibal smiled proudly to himself. "That's more like it."
"What exactly did you finish?" Will asked, gently placing the ice against your bruised knuckles.
You sighed. You mentioned Dacula once and they already knew the answer. They were just waiting to hear you say it.
"My ex-boyfriend, Sidney." You leaned back on your one good wrist. "He was a being a completely irredeemable shit, as usual-"
"Details, darling." Hannibal said in too singsongy of a voice than was really appropriate while wrapping your hand in gauze.
"Acting entitled, talking like I belonged to him-"
"You have no idea how little that narrows it down." Will shook his head.
You were compelled to agree, but couldn't bring yourself to admit that and the fact that you ever dated Sidney in the first place. "Right."
"That isn't out of character for him." Hannibal said.
"And certainly not enough to make you willingly drive back out to cousinfuck nowhere to beat him up." Will finished.
"I didn't go out there with the intent to beat him up!" You contested. "He said that if I could meet him for coffee he'd never speak to me again. I know it's a lot of gas money, but I really was gonna hold him to the whole 'never speaking to me again' bit."
"So what happened?" Will asked, growing impatient.
You looked at the ground, embarrassment stopping the words at the tip of your tongue.
"Somehow, he caught a whiff of our... arrangement." You tightened your hands into frustrated fists. "And he made some really shitty comments about... you."
Hannibal and Will exchanged looks. They let the silence linger, urging you to fill it.
"He went into obscene detail about how mmf threesomes are his favorite category of porn," you tried not to gag as you recalled the disgusting details. "And then said if I 'let him watch', he wouldn't tell the local baptist church that I was a whore-"
"The man is a pig." Hannibal said, matter-of-factually.
"I got up to leave." You continued. "Obviously. Then he said he knew where you lived. Announced it to the whole diner. Started to go through his list of semiautomatic weapons. So to make sure he knew I meant business-"
"You threw the first punch." Hannibal finished the thought for you.
You nodded. "Naturally."
Will smiled to the floor and pushed his glasses up his nose. "I would have loved to see that."
"As much as it pains me to say," Hannibal began, resignedly agreeing. "It's only fair that you stand up for us the way we stand up for you. From time to time."
Will brought your bruised knuckles to his lips. "Though we desperately need to teach you how to dodge. Because the next time you come home covered in scratches, someone will pay."
You took both of their hands. "I should get beat up more often."

I made excuses for Cas' until S12. When he switched allegiance from Dean (and Sam but we know it was always Dean) to Jack....that was a bitter pill to swallow. I get that Dabb wanted Cas to play Dad, but we never saw that organically develop. Overnight, Cas went from Team Dean to being All About Jack and "Dean who?" Jack dying from Chuck's magic gun - the horror! Dean also dying - eh, whatever. Dean saying soulless Jack should die - the horror! Jack saying Michael!Dean should die- eh, whatever.
I don't know why some fans think Dabb was a Destieler when he fractured that relationship almost beyond repair. 15x18 did help bring things back on track but still, it's hard to forget four years of Cas stealing from, lying to, and throwing Dean under the bus for Dabb's Creator's Pet.
Agreed 100%! Honestly, that whole gross plot with Kelly-the-incubator (who had no personality or backstory or loved ones and only existed to die birthing the actual important character 🤮) and fetus Jack brainwashing Cas into caring about him is why season 12 is one of my least favorites.
Cas and Jack's "father-son" bond was founded on nothing! Cas went from not giving a shit to suddenly devoting his entire existence to this creature he didn't know! With the way it was presented it couldn't have been read as anything other than brainwashing, yet we were just supposed to run with it and squee accordingly over Dad Cas and Special Snowflake Jack. Bleh.
If Dean and Cas' bond had been established the same way--two seconds of ominous glowing followed by insta-love and devotion--Destiel would have never, ever been a thing. If a brand-new character were introduced and Dean instantly fell in love with them without even an introductory conversation, fans would've been (rightfully) up in arms. In terms of substance, complexity, and thematic richness, it was frankly insulting that Cas and Jack's bond was implied to be remotely in the same league as Cas and Dean's.
Turns out that building a compelling, worthwhile dynamic between characters actually takes time and dialogue and even conflict! Radical notion, I know.
#ask#fuck jack#hate that little whitebread textbook-mary-sue cousin oliver woobie writer's pet#he played a big part in ruining cas' character#i'd argue he played the key part in ruining the show as a whole

Secrets of the Shore (Chapter 1)
Pairing: Pogues x reader, eventually JJ x reader.
Summary: This is just my rewrite of the show Outer Banks with my own twist by adding another main character which also happens to be John B’s twin sister.
Note: Hey guys! Thank you so much for the support of my last couple of fics. All your messages have been so kind and so sweet! I’ve made a rewrite of the show with a new character that eventually falls in love with her best friend. I’m gonna be posting a new chapter three times a week. Let me know what you guys think!
Word Count: 4.3k
Warnings: None
Chapter 2
"That's what, a three-story fall to the deck?" John B tip toes across the middle of the roof as he sips out of the can of beer in his hand.
I lean to my right, pressing against JJ's shoulder as we sit on a construction slack used to hold construction workers as they work on the siding of the home. Scaffolding, I think it's called. I narrow my eyes at my brother, counting down the seconds until he falls.
"I give you about a one-in-three chance of survival," Pope jokes from the deck below us.
John B shrugs. He licks his finger and holds it up in the air as if he's feeling which way the wind is blowing. "Hm. Should I do it?"
"Yeah, jump." Pope holds up a power drill and points it at John B like it's a gun. "I'll shoot you on the way down."
"You'll shoot me?"
"Yep." Pope closes one eye and pretends to shoot it. "Pow!"
I roll my eyes and look forward again, letting the beer slip down my throat like a refreshing glass of water. The warm North Carolina air presses soothingly against my freshly tan skin and I bask in the sunlight. Its days like these that I like the most. Days where none of my best friends have work, we're drinking causally, and joking with one another. Even if it's on a construction site in the middle of Figure Eight. But the idea of getting caught just gives me an adrenaline rush.
"They're gonna have Japanese toilets with towel warmers," Kie says as she walks out of the unfinished house.
"Of course. Why wouldn't they?" JJ says next to me with a shrug like it's not the craziest thing that a Kook would own.
"This used to be a turtle habitat, but who cares about the turtles, I guess."
"I can't have cold towels."
Kie looks up at John B, shielding her eyes with the back of her hand. "Can you please not kill yourself?"
"Don't spill the beer. I'm not giving you another one," JJ says.
As if on cue, John B's foot slips. Luckily he catches himself, but his beer, however, drops to it's death on the deck below. As John B steadies himself I release the breath I didn't even know I was holding. I take another greedy gulp of my warm beer to steady the nerves in my chest.
"Whoa! Oh, shit," John B curses.
"Of course you did," JJ rolls his eyes playfully. "Smooth."
"A plus, really." I glare up at my brother, feeling his mischievous smirk right back at me.
"Dumbass," Kie mutters under her breath. She looks up at me as if waiting for me to say something, but I only giggle to myself. John B can be clumsy but he's not going to accidentally kill himself.
"Hey!" I hear another voice shout behind us towards the street and front of the house. A voice that doesn't belong to any of my friends or my brother.
"Hey, uh, security's here," Pope says.
Immediately knowing what that means, I jump to my feet with the help of JJ right after he slugs the rest of his beer. A delirious grin dances along my lips as I hop down to the main deck.
"Let's wrap it up!"
"Boys are early today."
"Humpty Dumpty, let's roll!"
My legs take off after my friends through the house. Adrenaline rushes through my veins and straight to my head like a power high. I can't even feel my legs as they jump over wooden slacks and construction tools. The high from running from the police is better than any drug JJ can get his hands on, even the good stuff.
"Gary is that you?" JJ plays along before accidentally running into him, making him slip on his feet before running the other way. I grab his wrist and pull him closer to me to catch up. "Gary, good to see you man!"
I laugh as my feet land on the freshly cut grass in the front yard. "You're asking for it."
"JJ!" The obese cop chases after us, recognizing my best friend's face instantly. I'm not surprised, not even a little bit. JJ had his fair share of run-ins with the law.
"They're going out front!" I hear another cop shout. I can barley hear through the wind rushing through my ears.
We run into a tall white painted fence that blocks us from our car, better known as the Twinkie. Hopping fences is something I've learned to become better at after doing it so many times. However, I can't say the same about Pope. He's always struggled.
I swing my legs over the fence and land with a small 'oomf.' I look over my shoulder for my slow-poke friend and see him falling over the fence, landing on his side. I laugh as I pick him up by the shoulders.
JJ is waiting for us, clapping his hands like a coach on the sidelines at a football game because his players aren't running fast enough. But there's a smile on his face. "Get up, Pope, fatso's coming!"
"Hey!" The guard shouts behind me. He's halfway up the other side of the fence, but he doesn't have the strength to pull himself over completely. "Come here you little pricks!"
I hear the familiar honk coming from the van John B and I learned to drive in. My brother and Kie are waiting for us in the front seats of the Volkswagen van that would look better in the 70s than the 2020's but I love it. It fits our friend group perfectly. Plus I'd choose this car over any fancy Mercedes Tourons usually drive. The only time I've ever been in one of them is when I snuck off with a golf player from Georgia after a boneyard party. It was luxurious of course, but nothing like the Twinkie.
"Bus is leaving!" John B says as we get closer.
"Come on!" Kie yells at us from the passenger seat, banging the flat of her palm against the door.
I dive through the back first, landing on my elbows and rolling over. Pope and JJ follow less than a second later.
"Hey, hey, hey!" Gary calls after us as John B steps on the gas.
JJ leans out of the sliding side door that's still wide open. I lay on my back watching him as I try to catch my breath. His smile is contagious. For a boy who's been through hell and back, he smiles a lot, and I love every second of it.
He holds out his beer can as if he's offering it to the cop who's still trying to catch us...if he can catch up to it. "Check out Gary, gunnin' for a raise. Come on, Gary!"
"Wait. Slow down. Hey! You little pricks! Hey!"
"You're gonna give him a heart attack!" Kie tries to scold him but she can't fight the smile on her lips either as she watches from the side rearview mirror.
"You're so close! You can do it. There you go. They don't pay you enough bro."
"JJ, stop. Stop!" Kie says through her laughter.
I love Kie. She always tries to keep the peace between her friends and the world itself. Always the girl who raises money for charities that protect this Earth and save animals and solve world hunger. She's going to change the world someday. Her and Pope. Maybe if they can tolerate each other, they'll do it side by side.
JJ slumps back into the van with a toothy grin. He sits next to me and pulls me up so I'm sitting up straight. He dangles his arm around my shoulder and I lean further into his side. If I could choose one position to be in for the rest of my life it would be this one.
But I'd never admit that.
"Oh, come on. That sort of initiative is just begging to be punished," JJ says.
I hum in response and lean back into the seat behind me and stare out the window. A view of passing vibrant green leaves takes over the window as John B drives. The scene comforts me. Summer is my favorite season. No school. Just work and friends and the Outer Banks. Paradise on Earth, some may call it.
It's the sort of place where you either have two jobs or two houses. Two tribes, one island. We're currently driving through Figure Eight, the rich side of the island. Home of the Kooks. So, guess where we don't live.
As John B drives further South, the houses get smaller and smaller, feeling more like home. This is the South side. Or as we like to call it, the Cut. Home of the working class who make a living bussing tables, washing yachts, running charters. The natural habitat of...drumroll, please...the Pogues. That's us. Pogues, pogies, the throwaway fish. Lowest members of the food chain.
I know... a little harsh, don't you think?
So, the downside of the Pogue life is we're ignored and neglected. But the upside of the Pogue life? We're ignored and neglected, which means we do whatever we want, whenever we want.
The second John B parks the car, the boys are gathering all their fishing gear and we set off to our next destination. The marina.
"Nice haul, dude. Look at that!" JJ teases my brother when he reels in what I think is the smallest fish I've ever seen. If it was orange, I would have thought it was my old pet goldfish from when I was six. "Been all bait for, like, three weeks."
John B pulls the fish off his hook and tosses it in JJ's direction. JJ flinches back, knocking into me and almost throwing me into the water below. That was probably my fault, though. I shouldn't be sitting on an open ledge, dangling my legs twenty feet above the water.
"Watch it, idiot!" I smack JJ upside the head after letting go of the death grip I had on his bicep when I was about to fall to my death. Well...I'd probably survive, but it would hurt like hell.
"It's not my fault you chose the most dangerous seat!" JJ retaliates.
Yeah, that's JJ. John B's best friend since the third grade, which subsequently makes him my best friend since the third grade too. He's about as local as they come. Latest in a long line of fishing, drinking, smuggling, vendetta-holding salt-lifers who made their living off the water. Second best surfer I know. First being me of course. Mild kleptomaniac and a future tax cheat.
"Yeah, Mar, you should really get down from there," Kie says, walking over to me to help me down. I decide not to put up a fight. If I'm going to break my leg, I'm gonna do it in a surfing accident or something cool, not by falling off the dock.
Kiara. Or Kie as we call her. When not saving turtles or listening to Bob Marley, or getting a dolphin tattoo, she hangs out with us. I'm not really sure why though. She's a rich kid, actually. Her family owns the Wreck, this Outer Banks institution. Total cash down with the tourists and my current job. You know, I'm not really sure how her parents feel about us. But they like me enough to bring them money towards their restaurant. I bring in a lot of regulars. Advertising is kind of my thing. I'm pretty sure all my friends, even my brother, have a thing for her.
Kie hands me a water bottle and lays her legs across my lap. She lies down on the wooden bench and bathes in the sunlight the day still has to offer. Kie is my best friend. Best secret holder known to man, for the most part.
"I think she needs a leash," Pope adds, making me pass him a glare.
"The only thing useful about a leash is how I can strangle you with it," I say.
"Kinky," JJ says and winks at me. "That's my girl."
John B slaps JJ upside the back of his head.
I'm lucky my sunburnt skin is hiding the blush that creeps along my cheeks.
Pope glares at both JJ and I which only makes my growing smirk widen.
Pope...the brains of the operation...finalist for the Lucas T. Vanderhorst Merit Scholarship. And the smartest person I know. Little bit of a weirdo. His father's this legendary character, Heyward. Anything you wanted on the island, Heyward could get for you. Now, I'm not sure Heyward knew what to make of his oddball son, but it didn't matter. He was a Pogue, just like the rest of us.
"Trust me, if a leash was that easy, I would have tried a long time ago," John B mutters with a hint of a smile.
John Booker Routledge. My insufferable twin brother. Pain in my ass. Number one partner in crime. I hate him but I love him. Pretty much like any sibling relationship. We live in an old fish shack on the marsh. The Chateau as my dad use to call it. My dad disappeared at sea nine months ago looking for a shipwreck. I mean seriously, who disappears at sea these days? I miss him a lot. He may have been a little neglectful, but he took care of us the best that he could. My mom, however? She split when I was three. Last I heard she was in Colorado. At least I think it was Colorado. Honestly who knows and who cares.
Since my dad vanished, my Uncle T is supposedly my legal guardian. At the moment, he's in Mississippi, building houses which means it's just me right now, on my own, hangin' out with my brother and my friends.
Three months after my dad went missing, he was officially presumed dead. John B is more of an optimist than I am. He refuses to sign the paper and until he sees a dead body, he's not giving up. I back John B's decision, but I'm more realistic about what happened to my dad. The ocean, although my favorite place to be, is also one of the scariest.
My dad is probably dead and I will never get the closure that I want. So I'm dealing with it the best way I can, although I'm pretty sure everyone is a little worried about me, especially Kie now that John B is starting to follow in my footsteps by exhibiting reckless behavior.
But I'm getting better now. Day by Day. At least I wasn't acting like I did when my dad first left us.
~ ~ ~
I woke up with a slap to my ankle and my head buried deep into my pillow. I groan from the abrupt living alarm clock that's now pacing my room and throwing clothes from my closet at me. It only makes me squeeze my eyes tighter in hopes for at least five more minutes of sleep.
"Seriously, Mar, we need to go. We're late." John B rips my blanket off my body, leaving me exposed in just my pajama boxer shorts and a tank top. The sudden chill sends goosebumps up my arms and legs.
"Go without me." I push myself up on my elbows and grab the clothes he threw at me. I knew meeting the social worker alone wasn't an option. Even if one of us goes to this stupid meeting, it will prove to the social worker that we're not being responsible enough to keep DCS off our backs. As far as they know, Uncle T is still living with us and keeping us safe.
"You have five minutes." John B ignores me and leaves my room, slamming my door shut.
I roll my eyes and tumble out of my soft bed. I slip on my jeans shorts and a white t shirt that I tie in a knot to make it a crop top. Underneath it I have on my plain black bikini, knowing that I will be surfing the second we get home. The News has been reporting a storm for weeks that's suppose to hit tonight. Vicious waves and crazy winds sends a thrill through my body.
We arrive to the social worker's office only two minutes late. I thought that was a sign of responsibility, but the social worker only looks at us with distaste as we sit in the two chairs in front of her desk.
"John, Marleigh, it's come to our attention that you two are unemancipated minors living on your own." Her hair is pulled back into a tight low bun and her glasses are perched on the tip of her nose. Her suit looks way too tight for comfort, like it's squeezing the life out of her.
John B scoffs and leans back into his seat as if we have nothing to worry about, but I know his heart is beating just as wildly as mine. "No....no." The social worker raises one brow in suspicion and glances in my direction to either confirm or deny what John B is saying. John B sees this and answers for me. "No."
I just shrug as a response, which only makes the social worker more weary. She leans into her desk and folds her hands on top of our folders that are piled in the middle. "I need honesty to help you. That's what we want, right?"
"Yeah. I'm being honest."
"Okay, then when is the last time you spoke to your uncle?"
John B looks down at his watch and purses his lips. "Uh...thirty-four minutes ago."
"When's the last time you saw him?"
"Two hours and...forty-three minutes ago?"
I hold myself back from rolling my eyes. It's clear on the social worker's face that she's not buying into any of John B's lies.
She sighs and turns to look at me. "We're gonna come out there tomorrow to talk to your uncle. If he's not there, we're gonna move forward with foster care." Foster care. The words make me dig my nails into the wood of the arms of the chair I'm in. The last place I ever wanna be is in foster care. I want to stay here on the island with my brother and our friends. Not with some random family who couldn't care less about us in a place I'm not familiar with. "I want to assure you, we're gonna find you a safe and loving home."
She says it like she's offering us a better life, one that we would want, one that sounds like the better option but it isn't. I ignore the worried look John B sends my way and watch the seconds go by on the clock above the door. We basically have twenty-four hours to find Uncle T or someone to be pretend to be him.
~ ~ ~
The winds begin picking up early in the afternoon, the rain hitting by 5. On my way home from working at the Wreck, I watch people board up the windows of their stores and homes. All John B and I can do is hope that our little shack won't blow away by morning.
Unfortunately for Pope, he's at our house when John B catches me leaving the house with my board. When he tells me to stop, I'm prepared to put up a fight. I've been looking forward to surfing in this storm all day - something I can use to push the DCS lady out of my head and the promise she made that sounded more like a threat.
"You think you were gonna go out without me?" John B smirks and leads the way to the beach.
Pope follows behind us like a lost puppy, basically talking to himself as he tries to convince us that this is a bad idea. We stop at the edge of the beach. It's almost impossible to see the ocean through the wind and the rain.
"Those aren't surfable waves, bro," Pope says, squinting through the rain that splatters our faces wet.
"Says who?" I say, passing him a devious smirk and make a run for it towards the ocean.
I paddle past the choppy waves, letting the water knock me around like a feather in the wind. When I see a decent looking wave to ride, I prop myself up on my feet and stand. I lean into my board. The warmth that's taken over my body outruns the cold water I fall into when the waves crash over me. My body tumbles under the water and my board bumps against me. I try to swim back up to the surface but the current is strong. I don't know where I am and I can't see under the water. My nose burns when water rushes up my nostrils. I squeeze my eyes tight and just swim upwards in hope of reaching air. Maybe this was a bad idea, but the thrill is still keeping me excited.
I finally reach the surface after what feels like years. John B and Pope's screams are dull against the whistling wind. I hop back on my board and give the two guys a thumbs up and a wicked smile. Pope looks like he's about ready to have a heart attack and John B breathes out a sigh of relief as he paddles closer to me.
"You alright?" He asks me.
"Fine," I yell against the wind.
John B nods. He looks like he's about to say something else, but something over my shoulder catches his attention. I turn myself around, intrigued at what's he's seeing other than the water, clouds, and a bunch of rain. Then I see it. A boat that barely looks afloat, so far out that it looks like a speck against the rain.
"We should probably go," I say. I don't want John B's mind to run to what might have happened to Dad out there. Maybe he was caught by a storm like this, maybe his boat went overboard and his body is out there floating with the fishes. I don't know. The last thing I need him to do right now is speculate. Even if the same thoughts are running through my head, John B thinks he's still alive. These thoughts will keep him up all night. He doesn't move, however. "John B let's go."
~ ~ ~
JJ is already laying on the pull out bed in my living room when I get out of the shower. JJ crashes here most days of the week. He'd much rather be here than with his drunk abusive dad. Our friends don't know the extent of how shitty his relationship really is with his dad. But I do. I found out when I was thirteen. JJ snuck through my bedroom window after a tough night with his dad. His face and torso were covered in bruises. It took everything in me not to burst out in tears right then and there. But for some reason, he trusted me of all people with his biggest secret. I cleaned him up and let him sleep in my bed with me. Every once in a while we repeat the process. Sometimes he's not even hurt, he just shows up. And I let him in because I like having him there.
I fall onto the mattress next to him and prop my head up on my hand, leaning on my elbow. I run my fingers through his hair, feeling satisfied and bubbly when he moans in response.
"When did you get here?" I ask him.
"You were in the shower. Don't worry I didn't peak, but I was tempted," He says into his pillow.
I use the same hand I had woven in his hair and punch his shoulder playfully, making him fall on his back. His lips turn up in a grin.
I lay there for a second, looking up at the ceiling. My eyes feel heavy, the events of the day officially taking over my body. I peek an eye over at JJ who's watching me carefully as if I might break under his fingertips.
"What?" I grin to myself, thankful for the darkness so he couldn't see the blush on my cheeks. Again.
"You all right?" He asks, pushing my hair out of my face so he can look straight into my eyes.
"Why wouldn't I be?"
JJ hesitates, like he's trying to pick the right words to say. I watch him closely, studying every mark and crevice on his face. Beautiful and clear like always. Even when it's covered in bruises and blemishes, he's handsome. I could look at him all day.
"You hate storms," He says.
"I can sleep through anything," I tell him. "And I don't hate storms. They make for...eventful surfing days."
His face drops to a more serious one. "You know what I mean."
I do. Storms have never really frightened me. Not really. But ever since my dad disappeared nine months ago, I worried that he would get caught in a storm like this, that by morning there would be a knock on my door from an officer who would tell me that a dead body has washed up on shore and they ID'd him as my father. The image leaves me with nightmares on nights like tonight.
JJ's the only one who knows this.
I don't like talking about it. Like JJ, we have this in common. So instead of telling him I'm fine and him not believing me, I pull the blanket at the edge of the mattress over our bodies and tuck myself into his side, laying my head on his shoulder. A position so intimate for just us "friends." I hope he can't feel my heart pounding beneath my skin, against his side. I let my body soften against his, feeling sleep take over me. I fall into a dreamless sleep next to JJ, hoping that the storm will be gone by the time we wake up.

Dot’s SWTOR 1 Year Roundup
Happy New Year (please save me from the fireworks); I’ve just realized I have been playing SWTOR for over a year now, so to entertain me while I wait for some of the fireworks hype to (hopefully) fizzle out enough that I can sleep, I decided to dig through the halls of Discord conversations, screenshot logs, etc., to catalogue some of my favorite moments, thoughts, and other odds and ends of a year and change with the game that still has me outrageously stuffed in its pocket over a year later, lmao.
I’m not really a big New Years person myself and I generally don’t partake in much of the reflection or resolutions bit, but... this got a bit emotional, I have to admit, lol. This game’s truly been part of some of my best memories for 2022 and it was really nice to stop and appreciate that a bit.
I remember starting SWTOR because I was fishing around for a new game, probably in a patch lull of XIV or something, and I distinctly remember thinking and saying, “it’s free to start, what’s the worst that could happen?”
And that turned out to be one of the best decisions for me, apparently, lmao.
Long post ahead XD
A lot of my early SWTOR experiences were logged on my other laptop that’s since been repurposed for school use, so I don’t have a ready log of everything, but throwback shout out to Jedi Consular starting it all. This one’s for you, Yuon. For the best damn Jedi Master a padawan could ask for!
I made a lot of fond memories bringing one of my favorite OCs to the SWTOR universe - many serious Star Wars experiences, and many others where I said stupid shit and made mental memes.
That time we fought a load of Sith on Voss to the mental soundtrack of Toxic by Brittany Spears! Also, the origin of one of my friends saying probably the funniest thing I’ve ever heard about him and that was “man’s lightsaber has more meat on its bones than him.”
They weren’t wrong. Also, SWTOR is a perfectly functioning game that knows how dualsabers work. (Love you, SWTOR)
(Sir, I don’t think that’s how you experience with Valkorian worked.)
And there was also this explanation I had to offer to friends at some point in my ramblings, which is maybe the most relatable thing I’ve ever had to say about gamer inventories:
Judging from my screenshots (I have. Too many. Let’s not talk about it), Tyr came crashing into my life May, 2022. And I wolfed down the Imperial Agent story in ungodly time. Baby Tyr is too powerful for the post editor atm, but I have screens of him confronting Jadus from like the 10th and two days later he was on Corellia. Checks out, given how ravenously I completed his second run lately.
(Baby Tyr finally earned rights to join the post after a bit more writing, apparently, lol)
And under a week after that, I gave him main character problems and he was dealing with KOTXX! The power of love for your favorite glowstick, I mean, OC!!!
This also collectively means that I managed to finish all 8 class stories in under a year - several of which I’ve run at least twice now. It’s been an absolute blast and I’m still exploring different ways they can play out with different alignments and decisions. It’d felt like it’d been a while since I’d been so taken with a game and it’s genuinely been a pleasure to experience it again.
And, of course, diving headfirst into Tyr’s story drove a lot of my creative output this year. I love developing characters, getting invested in them, but I’d gotten into a bit of a struggle bus with it for a while before I plunged into Tyr’s experiences. It was probably midnight or so when I wrapped my first SWTOR fic or two and I just decided to say fuck it and take the plunge, post the thing and whatever happened happened.
Well, it turned out: what could happen would be a long series of fics and headcanons later, one of my favorite OCs, and a slew of lovely interaction with a truly wonderful community. I can’t say enough how much joy I’ve had getting into this game and throwing myself into the deep end of the community’s love for it and their characters. In the last several months, especially, I’ve made some lovely mutuals that have truly, genuinely made this year better. If I may indulge in some individual shoutouts, @captainderyn and @eorzeashan, you’ve both been incredibly delightful highlights to my last several months and it’s been an incredibly valuable pleasure to me to share circles with you! And, of course, my bestie mvp @fatewalker-phoenix who has put up with my descent into this madness from the beginning, lol, and whom has also been one of the best damn friends I’ve ever had in the last few years. Enabler, listener, and supporter extraordinaire, life has truly been better with you in it <3.
This year, I also participated in my first few Secret Santa gift exchanges, both irl and in fan spaces! I was delighted to share in the experience and they were incredibly rewarding! I look forward to participating in more of these opportunities in the future.
I’ve got a whole second run of the Agent class story under my belt in the last month and Savosta and Rhystyl’s friendship has also become really fun to work with and explore. I’m fondly looking forward to another year with this game with so many ocs that have become so near and dear to me.
And a big, big shout out and thanks to y’all for being a part of it. <3
Warm wishes for a kinder 2023,
-Dot
(PS, victory appears to be mine!! The amount of fireworks going off by the end of this writing is significantly lower than when I started, lol!)

BnHA Chapter 291: The Endeavor Pamphlet
Previously on BnHA: Dabi showed up atop Gigantomachia’s back and was all “you’ll never guess who I really am!” and the readers humored him and were all “who?” and he was all “TODOROKI TOUYA” and we were all “WOW └(・。・)┘ OH MY GOSH I WOULD NEVER HAVE GUESSED”, except for Shouto and Enji who were GENUINELY SHOCKED. Anyway so Touya was all “and guess what I’m doing right now!” and before anyone could even try, he was all, “STREAMING MY EMMY-NOMINATED MINISERIES ‘HELLO, I’M EVIL BUT ALSO TRAGIC AND SEXY, NOW LET ME TELL YOU ALL ABOUT MY DAD WHO SUCKS’’, THAT’S WHAT.” And everyone was all “oh my god” and Touya was all “ヽ(⌐■_■)ノ♪” for basically the rest of the chapter, and that’s pretty much it! Oh, wait, except for the part where he also doused himself in bleach in a fit of pure theatrics, which is actually pretty much the main takeaway from the entire chapter really because it was just wild af. ANYWAYS.
Today on BnHA: Horikoshi introduces Baby Touya, the world’s most enchantingly sweet character, and is immediately all, “I sure can’t wait to tell you guys all about how his fucking jaw burnt off.” Thankfully he doesn’t (YET), and we cut back to the present pretty quickly, where Dabi explains how he took all of his brain cells that should have been used to stop him from pouring bleach over his head, and instead put them all toward his big brain plot of releasing an elaborate video detailing Endeavor’s various abuses and crimes, and even throwing Hawks under the bus as well because WHY NOT. He then leaps off of Gigantomachia’s back (like I said, no brain cells) all set to blast them with a Prominence Burn, only to be stopped by none other than THE LEGEND HIMSELF, MOTHERFUCKING BEST, PRETTIEST, NICEST, MOST OUTSTANDING MOTHERFUCKING JEANIST. Who’s no doubt outraged by the crime against hair he witnessed only moments earlier. GO GETTIM JEANY BOI.
so I haven’t had time to answer any of them because this has been the stupidest week, but I just wanted to tell you guys that I received no fewer than nine asks about Dabi’s hair. which, in a week filled with election memes and tumblr’s most cursed fandom briefly rising back up from the dead, is a pretty impressive feat for him if you ask me. like, I know I was making fun of it basically nonstop, but it sure did generate a lot of discussion so maybe I should rethink my opinions on Dabi’s PR strategies now, idk
anyway. it’s Saturday. time to catch up on this shit. let’s see how fucked the Todorokis are
OH NO HE’S CUTE

HOLY SHIT THIS IS TOO MUCH TO FUCKING PROCESS. I’M JUST TRYING TO ENJOY MY DAY HORIKOSHI, ARE YOU REALLY GOING TO TRAUMATIZE THIS POOR CHILD RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY SALAD
“thanks for being all right” the fuck
who allowed this child to be so cute. I’m serious. who signed off on this
how could a child this adorable possibly want to murder his equally adorable baby brother. please, your honor. there must be some mistake here
guess how prepared I am to read all about Touya’s tragic past. mm. that’s right. zero ready. none ready
anyway. TWO THOUSAND DEGREES LOLOLOL. NO TRACE OF A CORPSE HOW CONVENIENT. A PIECE OF HIS LOWER JAW BONE FFFFMSGHKLSh. LOVELY. LOVELY
LMAOOOOO

listen you guys. I just want to take a moment to appreciate that Horikoshi Kouhei did one of two things here. either (1) he planned it out FROM THE VERY START that Touya would be born with red hair Because Fire Powers, but would then have his hair turn white due to trauma, thus making the Dabi/Touya connection very slightly less obvious, although Let’s Be Real Who Are We Kidding. OR, (2) the anime got it wrong and gave him red hair, and rather than allowing this plot hole to continue to exist, Horikoshi took it upon himself to concoct this elaborate storyline and pretend it was never a plot hole at all! in which case I sure hope someone at Bones is sending him a VERY nice Christmas card this year. got this man sweeping up all your messes for you. you’re just lucky he has some sort of wild compulsion to address these things
anyways!!

FATHER AND SON. how sweet. :| still zero percent ready for any of this btw
STOP BEING CUTE

THIS IS RIDICULOUS. I’M SO MAD RIGHT NOW. HE IS THE SINGLE CUTEST CHARACTER IN THE ENTIRE SERIES, and do you even know how many other baby characters I’m betraying in order to say that?! baby Kacchan, baby Deku, baby Ochako, baby Shouto, Eri, baby Hawks. I’M LOOKING YOU DEAD IN THE EYE RIGHT NOW AND TELLING YOU THAT BABY TOUYA IS CUTER THAN ALL OF THOSE PLEBS. AND YOU’RE LOOKING BACK AT ME RIGHT NOW ALL “YEAH IT SURE IS A PITY ABOUT HIS JAW MELTING OFF THOUGH.” THAT’S IT, I QUIT THE SERIES
and Enji’s smiling at him. he’s so proud of him. but then Touya won’t be able to do it, and Enji’s gonna stop training him, and Touya’s gonna feel like a failure and keep pushing himself in order to try and win his dad’s affections back, because that’s all kids fucking want, all they want is just love, that’s fucking it, you couldn’t just give him that?? and then he’s gonna immolate himself fflkdlskfh THERE YOU SEE HORIKOSHI, I KNOW THE WHOLE STORY ALREADY, YOU DON’T HAVE TO DO THE WHOLE “SHOW THEM THE DEAD DOG” THING YET AGAIN YOU PIECE OF SHIT
OH SNAP THERE GOES THE TWIN THEORY. R.I.P.

BABY FUYUMI. PRETTY CUTE. NOT AS CUTE AS TOUYA THOUGH. HEY LOOK, NO REASON TO GET MAD AT ME I’M JUST STATING A FACT HERE
YEAH THIS IS GONNA GO REAL WELL OH BOY

I keep pressing the emergency stop button but this industrial tragedy machine just keeps on chugging along anyway, I’m pretty sure this thing is not up to code

:| I am so sorry sweet boy, Horikoshi is only getting started with you
FUCKING HELL WITH THIS NARRATION

but he wasn’t actually a child to you, he was just a little puppet child for you to live vicariously through!! and then you went and did the same fucking thing with Shouto afterwards and never learned your lesson until just six months ago!! fucking hell, Enji
so now he’s all “Touya is dead, that’s an unforgivable lie” fflkdhflk motherfucker does he look dead to you. if you really think that, tumblr and twitter have got a little over five years’ worth of archived theory posts to show you
oh shit Touya’s countering with “it’s an unforgivable truth”, which, damn. I actually think Horikoshi’s dialogue is one of his weaker points as a writer a lot of the time, but that comeback was snappy as fuck

actually guys, now that I’ve seen how ridiculously fucking cute baby!Touya was, I can almost understand why Shouto and Enji never put the pieces together before lol. any passing similarities would have easily been dismissed on account of he’d need to be at least 10x more adorable in order to get the full resemblance
OH MY GOD

NOW YOU SLEEP??? SO YOU POINT BLANK REFUSED TO PASS OUT WHILE YOU WERE BUSY MAIMING ALL OF MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS, BUT NOW THAT THERE’S AN OPPORTUNITY TO SEE YOUR REACTION TO THE “YOUR LIEUTENANT WAS SECRETLY RELATED TO ONE OF YOUR WORST ENEMIES THE WHOLE TIME” BOMBSHELL, YOU FINALLY DECIDE TO GET YOUR FORTY WINKS. I SEE
WOW DABI

I’M SURPRISED YOU DIDN’T ALREADY HAVE YOUR ANCESTRY.COM RESULTS PRINTOUT READY TO FOLD INTO A PAPER AIRPLANE AND ZOOM ON DOWN TO HIM
LOL NEVERMIND

gotta say, so far The Endeavor Pamphlet is just about as spicy as I could have hoped

(ETA: Natsuo’s face as he watches his beloved dead brother come back to life only to literally and metaphorically set everything on fire in one fell swoop is :/. why must you do this to me Natsu. can’t you see I’m trying to throw a Welcome Back Jeanist party here.)
HAVE YOU READ THIS?! TODOROKI ENJI ABUSED HIS OWN HEIR, AND DABI WROTE IT DOWN RIGHT THERE

WELL HE’S NEVER GON’ BE NUMBER ONE NOW / NEVER GON’ BE NUMBER ONE NOW / THAT’S ONE LESS THING TO WORRY ABOUT / THAT’S ONE LESS THING TO WORRY ABOUT
btw I neglected to mention this last week, but yes I do recognize and appreciate that this is Can’t Ya See-kun himself whom Horikoshi has chosen to be the face of this existential crisis which the general public is about to experience. rip CYS-kun
OOF

excuse me. putting aside the implications of Dabi sharing this context-less murder video of Hawks with the entire world for a moment, I just have to pause for a sec here, because when exactly did he get a chance to edit this all in?? complete with voiceover that seamlessly ties in with the prerecorded footage of him with DNA test results sans shirt?? you’re telling me this motherfucker, with all the smoke that was in the room thanks to his own quirk, somehow got a PERFECT SHOT of the PRECISE MOMENT when Hawks drove his feather knife into Jin’s back, using his MAGIC CAMERA THAT HE I GUESS HAD THE ENTIRE TIME IN THE POUCH RIGHT NEXT TO HIS BLEACH BOTTLE, and then immediately somehow got this very next shot as well FROM AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT ANGLE

ALL THE WHILE IMMEDIATELY RUNNING THROUGH SCRIPT REVISIONS IN HIS HEAD, WHICH HE THEN PROCEEDED TO RECORD... WHERE, EXACTLY?? WITH SKEPTIC, WHILST RIDING ON MACHIA’S BACK??
AND THIS IS ALL YOU HAVE TO SAY FOR YOURSELF???

and this after I just wrote that whole long paragraph positively GLOWING about this man’s ability to plug up a plot hole. jfc. just scratch out every damn word I said lol. just forget all of it
are you fucking kidding me, the footage was from the cameras Skeptic planted on Hawks??

that’s... actually... okay you know what, it still doesn’t make any sense in the slightest, but the determination to address it nonetheless... just, dammit... I feel like I’m constantly at war with myself over whether or not I want to shake this man’s hand or slap him lmao. whatever, then!!
anyway, since Shouto and Enji can’t actually see the damage that Touya is dealing to the hero industry even as they speak, Touya is taking it upon himself to give them the highlights

I think it’s a testament to how much Endeavor cares about Hawks that he managed to zero in on that comment even amidst all the craziness of his eldest son returning from the dead to announce how he’s been carefully plotting their destruction for years and years. like, he heard “Hawks” and his face immediately went like that. you think he’s worried that Dabi did something to him? because he’d be right to worry lol
so the Endeavor Pamphlet narration is now explaining all about how Hawks totally killed the Number 3 Hero Best Jeanist as well! yep... he sure did... totally...
OH MY GOD WE’RE CUTTING TO HIM AHHHHH
Hawks, that is. lol. not Jeanist. NO, JUST MY POOR HALF-DEAD WINGLESS BABY SON

NOOOOO HIS LITTLE WING STUMPS. BUT SOMEHOW HIS FACIAL HAIR IS STILL INTACT. OH TO BE AN ANIME PRETTY BOY BEING SET ON FIRE. “HEY, TAKE IT EASY, WATCH THE FACE”
EXCUSE ME WHAT

interesting! we suspected as much, I think, with the clues that Ending dropped, and the little flashback right after the name reveal. still not clear how Dabi found out about it though!
looooool okay here we go, breaking out the heavy-handed holier-than-thou shit now

you know, I do find it interesting how trying to model themselves after All Might’s noble Symbol of Peace image has kind of ended up being the heroes’ undoing here. like, I could write a whole essay on this, but what it basically boils down to is that they were all trying too hard to be perfect. All Might went out there and did his thing and was amazing, and so the powers-that-be built an entire system centered around this seemingly-infallible person, and they acted like the system was infallible as well. and so most of the population ended up becoming complacent over the years, and meanwhile the people who were unfortunate enough to fall through the cracks understandably wound up disillusioned and perceiving the heroes as these false idols
anyway, but I think one positive takeaway from this is that the new up-and-coming generation of heroes represent a breakaway from that system. like, imo what we’re witnessing is the downfall of the Perfect Hero, and the rise of the imperfect hero. and this new generation doesn’t shy away from their failures or pretend like they never happened. they pretty much can’t pretend, because their failures are all right out there in the open for everyone to see. Bakugou Katsuki, just to name one example off the top of my very biased head, has had his own personal character journey basically play out right in front of the media’s eyes. his humiliation at the sports festival, his kidnapping by the League, and all of the fallout afterward. this isn’t someone who can ever go out there and convince the world that he’s perfect. but what he can do, instead, is show the world that he’s trying. that he’s trying with everything he has to do his best, to be the best. rather than this untouchable godlike image, it’s instead the image of someone painfully human who is nonetheless striving with everything he’s got to keep moving forward, flaws and all, and work his way to the top
and ultimately I think that’s going to be a much more positive image to send out to the world when all’s said and done. because rather than merely inspiring awe, heroes like that inspire people to take action themselves. or at least that’s what I hope! and not just Bakugou, but the others as well. we’ve got Shouto, whose own personal trauma is being aired in front of the whole nation even as I sit here ranting. we’ve got Deku, who cries at the drop of a hat, and who fought to become a hero despite being quirkless (and I think it’s only a matter of time before that eventually becomes public knowledge as well). tl;dr because I’m getting way too long-winded here, but these kids have effectively been humanized in a way that the old generation never was, and I think that’ll go a long way towards building trust between them and the people they’ll someday be protecting, and inspiring the next generation in hopefully a much healthier way
anyway so where were we. ...oh yes, Dabi was explaining that heroes only protect themselves, and is presumably building up to his grand conclusion of “therefore you should all just let the villains take over and burn down the world”
omfg. YOU GUYS

DOES CAN’T YA SEE-KUN’S SHARK FRIEND ACTUALLY CALL HIM “CAN’T YA SEE-KUN.” HE HAS A NAME YOU KNOW!! UNLESS HE LEGALLY GOT HIS NAME CHANGED TO CAN’T YA SEE-KUN. OH MY GOD
ALSO, IS THAT CAN’T YA SEE-KUN CRYING IN THE BOTTOM RIGHT THERE OMG. GIVE THIS CHILD A HUG. EVERYONE STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING RIGHT NOW AND HUG HIM
BAKUGOU IS BARELY HANGING ON THERE LOL. GOTTA STAY CONSCIOUS... SO MUCH TEA BEING SPILLED... FOCUS... CONCENTRATE
IIDA’S ANGLING HIS HEAD IN A WEIRD WAY, LIKE DUDE. LOOKING SUSPICIOUSLY SNUGGLY THERE. MMM THESE IIDABAKU CRUMBS
HADOU IS ALL “WHAT EVEN IS ACTUALLY GOING ON” LMAO
LASTLY, POOR SHOUTO OMFG. WHEN YOU’RE ALL FINISHED HUGGING CYS-KUN THIS CHILD NEEDS YOUR ATTENTION!!
so now Dabi’s leaping off of this ninety-foot-tall gargoyle man like that’s a normal, smart thing to do. unless he can fly too now? saw his dad doing it back at Fukuoka and was all “hmm”
OH MY GOD SOMEONE TELL ME RIGHT NOW WHAT WORD SHOUTO IS USING TO ADDRESS ENJI, THESE TRANSLATIONS LOVE TO MESS WITH MY HEAD

ENJI GET MOVING DO YOU NOT SEE THOSE TEARS!!! SNAP OUT OF IT YOU BIG TREE
AHHHHH

OH KACCHAN YOU WOKE UP A LITTLE MORE THERE, HUH
lol he and Deku both look so determined but they’re basically sitting ducks. their “oh shit” faces do look remarkably like their “TIME TO SWING INTO ACTION” faces but don’t be fooled, they have one good arm and about six pints of blood left between the two of them. looks like this one’s all on you Shouto
-- AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH --

BAH GOD... WHAT’S GOING ON HERE... THAT’S BEST JEANIST’S MUSIC
y’all. can’t even talk right now, my brain has completely shut down lol. just. ...

jacqueline wilson’s ‘love lessons’
tw: abuse, pedophilia, characters making Bad Decisions, long unnecessary spiel about my childhood like I’m running a recipe blog
It’s funny how loads of the authors who helped shaped me into the vaguely humanoid being I am today have names beginning with the letter ‘J’; Judy Blume, Jeff Kinney, John Green, J.K. Rowling (yikes, I know) … and Jacqueline Wilson.
I’ve never owned a Jacqueline Wilson book of my own; they were always borrowed from a friend, or from a friend of a friend, or from a friend of a cousin- you get the gist. Her books, for me, come with an entire aesthetic: something reminiscent of yard sales, and reading under the covers with a flashlight, and being lulled into a false sense of security by the deceptively innocent Nick Sharratt illustration on the cover until someone’s best friend gets mowed over.
So I knew what I was getting into when I picked up Love Lessons. I knew this was going to be Fucked Up; and boy, was I right.
(Here’s the part where I warn you about spoilers.)
From an abusive dad to creepy child predator teachers to slut-shaming and victim blaming, this book has it all.
The main character is Prudence ‘Prue’ King, who is homeschooled at the beginning of the book, along with her sister, Grace. Their parents remain rooted in the early twentieth century, and are very strict about- well, everything. No TV, no computers, not a single mobile phone in the house; their clothing worse than the orphans’ from Annie; and their father remains distinctly distrustful of modern institutions like the school and the hospital; and so on, and so forth.
Daddy King suffers a stroke, and has to be taken to the hospital. Meanwhile, Mrs. King (a floppy, spineless woman who lives in fear and awe of her, frankly horrid, husband) sends the girls to school, behind the then invalid Mr. King’s back. Cue Prue and Grace being the freakshows of the school, with their strange clothing and overbearing mother.
Grace manages to make friends, but Prue remains alone. The kids are dicks, the teachers are dicks… well, all of them but one. And that’s the art teacher, Mr. Raxberry (I just couldn’t get over that name; it seems like something you’d name a mythical plant from Pixie Hollow or some shit. I’m assuming it isn’t an actual name, since the spelling & grammar check on my computer doesn’t seem to recognize it), or Rax, as he’s called.
Oh, yeah; Prudence’s favorite subject in school is art, and she’s a whiz at it. This is relevant, because reasons.
And here’s where stuff gets murky. Prue develops a crush on Rax- which is perfectly normal. I’m definitely no stranger to it; I’ve had crushes on my teachers, my mum admitted she used to think one of her professors was cute. And yeah, as I grew older, I grew out of those crushes and now have a markedly more refined taste in men (unless he’s 5’ 7’’, born in ’97 and named Bang Chan, I don’t want him); and my mum married my dad, so I’m assuming she did, too. Admittedly, now that my dad teaches at a university, it’s icky to think that there might be students who have crushes on him- but I digress.
My point is, loads of us have liked our teachers. But I doubt the majority of us have acted on it.
And Prue actively showing her interest in Rax isn’t the worst part. That’s a spot reserved for Rax reciprocating her feelings.
Guess Ezra Fitz and Ms. Grundy (yes, I watched Riverdale; please don’t cancel me) have a new addition to the Creep Club.
The age of consent in the UK is 16, if I’m not mistaken. Prue is 14. She’s just barely become a teenager, and she’s being preyed upon.
Because that is what Rax is. He’s a predator; he preys upon this vulnerable girl who’s never been in a relationship before- hell, she’s never even had friends- her father’s abusive, so she obviously doesn’t have the best experience when it comes to men- she’s unpopular at school, with the students and staff alike- and he lures her in. I don’t care how bloody nice he is to Sarah, or what a good dad he is (well, he’s really not, seeing as he cheated on the mother of his children WITH A BLOODY FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD CHILD)- the guy’s a fucking pedophile.
I was staunchly stuck at a yellow light with him; like, sure, maybe Prue thinks he’s flirting with her- maybe she’s looking at this all wrong, she doesn’t know how relationships work- see, he drew a picture of Sarah, too, in his secret notebook- Prue’s just reading into this too much- up until he says he loves her.
Dude. Humbert fucking Humbert. She’s fourteen, for Christ’s sake, and you’re married. You have two children. She’s a child. She’s probably closer to your son’s age than she is to yours.
(This is the part where I bury my head in my pillow. And scream. Extensively, and with passion.)
The book does make some genuinely good commentary on slut-shaming and victim blaming and abusive parenting. And on one hand, I can see why so many people find issue with the romanticization of the when I kissed the teacher trope- but I can defend it, too.
The book is in Prue’s perspective. She thinks she’s in love with Rax, so obviously, she’s not going to throw in some valuable moral at the end- because she’s too young and inexperienced to think otherwise. And sadly, there are loads of instances of child abuse that go unreported because the victims just don’t know better.
What I have issue with is how the school dealt with it, ultimately. Prudence, a child, has to deal with the consequences of the actions of a literal child predator. Sure, Rax ‘clears his name’ by cooking up some bullshit story about how it was only a crush and he didn’t encourage it, but you’d think other adults would know better and, oh, I dunno- dig deeper into it, instead of blaming it on a child?
“She says you told Mr. Raxberry you loved him and he held you in his arms and fondled you.”
Which Prudence denies, because, again, she doesn’t know better. She then goes on to say that they did nothing wrong. To which the adult speaking to her, in this case, the principal, Miss Wilmott, goes on to say:
“I’m not sure that’s entirely true… I feel that there are some aspects of your friendship that could be considered inappropriate.”
FYI, lady, he kissed her- multiple times (not that kissing her once makes him any more redeemable), and told her he loved her, and admitted to fantasizing about running away with her and leaving his family behind. Fun fact: do you know Prudence is underage?
You’d think that Miss Wilmott would maybe give this whole fiasco a favorable ending, but it turns out she listens to school gossip;
“I haven’t been at all happy with your attitude. You don’t seem to understand how to behave in school. I’ve heard tales of unsuitable underwear and then a silly romance with one of the boys in your class. I feel that in the space of a few short weeks you’ve made rather a bad name for yourself… I don’t know whether you intend to be deliberately insolent but you certainly come across as an unpleasantly opinionated and arrogant girl… I can’t help feeling that you’ll be much better off elsewhere. I shall try hard to engineer a suitable transfer to another school.”
And then she comes out with this gem:
“If you won’t leave, then I shall have to ensure that Mr. Raxberry finds another position.”
“No, you can’t do that! He’s a brilliant teacher.”
“You should have thought of that before you started acting in this ridiculous and precocious manner. If I were another kind of headteacher, I would have Mr. Raxberry instantly suspended. There could even be a court case. He would not only lose his job, he could find himself in very serious trouble. Did you ever stop to think about that?”
Girlboss, gaslight and gatekeep. The fucking trifecta.
Also, by ‘another kind of headteacher’, does she mean the kind of headteacher WHO DOESN’T LET CHILD PREDATORS ROAM FREELY WITHIN THEIR HALLS?
This bitch is out here blaming a child, a literal child, for the crimes of an adult man.
The only time Prue seems aware of the fact that Mr. Raxberry is actually a very shit person is her immediate thoughts that follow after she tells Miss Wilmott she’ll take the fall;
I so wanted to save darling Rax- and yet why hadn’t he wanted to save me? Had he told Miss Wilmott it was all my fault, that I’d got a ridiculous crush on him, that I’d made ludicrous advances to him? … I wanted to tell this horrible, patronizing woman how hungrily he’d kissed me, but I couldn’t do it. I loved him. I had to help him.
NO, SWEETHEART; YOU MOST DEFINITELY DO NOT.
And maybe I’m going overboard with all these excerpts, but here’s what Rax has to tell Prue, after school, following her expulsion:
“I let her think the worst of you, the best of me, just to save my skin. I said it was ridiculous talking about a love affair between us. I said you simply had a crush on me, and that I was just trying to be kind… You were brave enough to stand up to me and force me to acknowledge the truth… I love you… That’s why I had to take a risk and see you this one last time. I didn’t want you to think I didn’t care… Every night when I close my eyes, I’ll think of us together in this car and how badly I wanted to drive off with you. I’ll imagine us walking hand in hand at the water’s edge… I wish I wasn’t such a coward.”
(I burrow into the pillow further. I’m trying to suffocate myself.)
And that’s where I think Wilson went wrong. Sure, Prudence getting expelled for something that was completely out of her hands is unfair, and horrible, but it’s real. That shit can happen.
What’s bad is showing Rax in a positive light after all that. If only Wilson had written Rax to not be the Romeo he thinks he is. Make him ignore Prudence, throw her under the bus in front of her face, instead of this star-crossed lovers bullshit it’s made out to be. Show your younger audience that Rax is not a good man. I’ve got a little over two weeks left for my twentieth; I can see why this is unacceptable. But I was a little younger than Prue when I watched Pretty Little Liars, and my only gripe with Aria dating Ezra was that Noel Kahn was so much cuter.
It shows when you scroll down the Goodreads reviews; you’ve got adults giving it one or two stars, and teenagers giving it four or five, with their biggest complaints being, “but Toby was cuter!!!”
Other non-pedophilia related complaints regarding the book include: Prudence being unlikable- which I didn’t really notice, considering she reacted to some people way better than I would’ve, even at 19 (which probably says a lot more about me than it does about Prue, but oh well). Still, Prudence obviously isn’t the most prudent of people- and again, she’s fourteen. Look me in eye and tell me you weren’t an arsehole at that age (unless you’re fourteen now, in which case, I assure you that you’ll look back on yourself someday and go ‘wtf was I thinking’). Bringing up Toby’s dyslexia in an argument was low, though.
There were people who thought the Kings’ almost-Amish lifestyle was exaggerated and unrealistic, but I assure you, it may very well be real. There are 8 billion people on the world- it’s fair to assume that several of them are complete weirdos.
Grace was a sweet character, and I adored her with every fiber of my being. As were her friends Iggy and Figgy. Honestly, I would’ve loved a book about Iggy, Figgy and Piggy’s (mis)adventures too.

Honestly, I haven’t been chatting enough about Owl House Season 2, so I’m gonna make some bullet points here about what I’ve been loving from these first five episodes.
-Lilith & Hooty’s whole friendship dynamic. It’s very nice, ironic, funny, and super cute to see two polar opposites become the most unlikely of friends. Also, it adds a nice change of pace to a side character, like Hooty, who was the guy no one liked to hang around with much as a running gag in Season 1. Now Hooty has someone who enjoys his company and values much of what he has to say, too. Lilith knows what it’s like to not have people enjoy their company, as she made choices that winded up putting her in a place of solitude from actual healthy socializing. For a long time Lilith didn’t have anyone to genuinely consult, until this silly freaking Owl tube came along to give a sense of safety after abandoning her ideals that defined this Witch for a couple of decades.
-Getting me to actually care more about King’s role in this story line. King wasn’t someone who really clicked with me in Season 1′s run time. I liked his episodes centering on the sibling dynamic he had with Luz sure, but not any one of them made me go, “This character is actually very endearing and want to see more of their journey.” , where I took King more as an overall decent member of the cast at best. Echoes of the Past seriously surprised me in how well it executed his backstory showcasing the strong connection he has to Edalyn & Luz in general as a found family. The revelation of how Eda & King met, on top of her dubbing him with that name this little guy cherishes, paints a picture of how much Eda truly cares about the young demon. Edalyn wanted him to feel good about his place in their world, which only ended up being a mistake she’d have to correct afterwards in this episode. Echoes of the Past was such a lovely surprise in how well it succeeded in building upon the lore of this interesting world and giving King’s development more of a dramatic and tragic revelation of characterization. I’d arguably say what they did with King’s may be the best part for me in Season 2, thus far. It really was that much of a shock for me in what they accomplished.
-Amity & Luz, my God where do I even begin with these two cute love birds? If Grom Night was the story’s way of acknowledging Amity has got a crush on Luz, then this episode lit a spark underneath our main heroine’s interest in her romantically. When Amity charged in against her parent’s improved abomination saying like a badass, “Get away from my Luz!”, anyone could see how mesmerized Luz looked at her actions. Part of me thought they’d continue doing the unaware protagonist trope, where Luz wasn’t aware of Amity’s feelings or even gains a crush of her own, either. Really enjoying how Dana Terrace and her crew have been approaching this representation of LGBTQ through making the whole concept of Lumity romance feel super organic from both ends. It’s no longer a one sided deal with only Amity having feelings for someone, who helped make her once miserable life so much greater. Luz now views her in the same inspiring light Amity did in Grom Night’s story of seeing this person as more than a friend, but a significant individual she wants to share her life and world with back on Earth. This is how you do a romantic representation without beating viewers over the head of how much you’re pushing boundaries. Let the characters actions speak on how they feel about each other.
-Gwendolyn’s introduction the story was a very welcoming one, as it gave more of a complicated shake up to how interesting, yet tragic, Edalyn & Lilith’s lives are when it comes to their relationship with their respective parent. Lilith choosing to curse Eda already put many years of guilt upon herself, but to not get any attention afterward from her mother’s top priority becoming curing her sister’s curse instead? Talk about another way to look it as Lilith feeling more down in the dumps for putting that curse on Eda. Lilith likely felt as if she didn’t deserve to be loved after throwing her sibling under the bus to get into the Emperor’s Coven, which led to a long struggle of trying to makes amends. Bringing their mother into Season 2 was a terrific way to shed more light onto how this crazy family operates and show just how much the curse affected them all emotionally on different levels. Eda had to distance herself from others, Lilith searched to find answers on her own, and Gwendolyn poured so much of her life into wanting to help her youngest child, at the expense of forgetting about Lilith’s needs. A great representation of a flawed, yet still loving, family tree.
-Showing Gus’ magical illusion abilities in a seriously cool, albeit disturbing manner, of how even if he may be limited to using just one type of magic doesn’t mean it’s not powerful. How they went about evolving the strength of illusions being used to even physically fool people into feeling the touch of it, while showing a greater strain on its user casting said spell, adds a new level of awesome to Gus’ abilities. It shows he can become a great asset to his friends in the future of growing events and not just get sidelined unfairly, due to a growing power scale of some kind. That was another one of my favorite parts of the episode, beside that whole deal many are talking about surrounding Lumity’s very great growth in Through The Looking Glass Ruins. Give it up for the future MVP Gus over here, as I can see this stuff coming into play against the Emperor’s Coven conflict possibly in Season 2′s finale when shit gets very real.

Can you do Hungary for the character meme?
send me a character and i’ll list:
favorite thing about them: Honestly, gotta be one of my favorite genders. She was a fan favorite back in the day and for good reason. To my memory, she’s the only one of the female characters we see be involved with their military. It gets me thinking of how the others get involved in their own and if their status as a country overrules the fact that they’re afab. Then again, children nations fought so like who knows. She likes being strong, she knows she’s good at fighting, but she can also be comfortable doing domestic things. She has a good balance of both these sides of her. Outside of that, she’s a very cheerful person and I think is in good touch with her emotions once she has the chance to explore who she is outside of being a fighter. She’s honestly so sweet to the people she cares about and you can tell she has a lot of love in her heart.
least favorite thing about them: I guess this isn’t as much as a problem anymore but because she was one of the very few afab characters, she got shipped around a lot and got very over sexualized. Again, I don’t see it coming up as often anymore so we move on.
favorite line: “OMG, are you trying to tell me you’re God?” / “I just recently converted to Christianity so I don’t get all the fuss but I’m sure they’ll teach me to freak out soon enough.”
brOTP: Poland, Belgium, Ukraine, Czech
OTP: Pruhun, like please it’s just really good. They’re such a bi couple. Her and Austria are cute as well but Prussia just has the upper hand for me.
nOTP: Gonna throw France under the bus for a change.
random headcanon: She is an expert horseback rider. It’s honestly such a freeing feeling to her even more so that it’s seen often as a leisure activity these days. The feeling of soaring through the air at a perfect leap and landing and running and going just takes her heart. She gets really focused on it, the landscape just coming in a blur around her but she just naturally feels what to do. Her horse very much is an extension of herself and has been her companion for hundreds of years.
unpopular opinion: I don’t think Austria forced her into being anything. She had to grow up in an environment that required her to be strong and it wouldn't until she was much older that she decided for herself to “act like a frickin’ lady” to quote. She can encompass both.
song i associate with them: Bird Song by Florence + The Machine, Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land by MARINA, Runaway by AURORA
favorite picture of them: Look I know when she wears her uniforms or even the Halloween costume where she’s a prince she looks fantastic but there’s something so soft and comfy about this. Again, Sapphic brain.

The Big Three x Reader Imagines
Anonymous said:
I don't know how many characters you take for headcanons but here it go... How do you think The Big 3 would handle having a crush on a first-year student? If this excees your maximun on characters, just a one headcanon or scenario with favorite Big 3 it's perfect too ^^
Tamaki
When he first meets you, it’s when he’s helping out Present Mic
That’s when you walked in to give him a note from Mr. Aizawa
Tamaki didn’t know how, but Present Mic knew you
“Ahh, Y/n! There’s my champ! How did training go?”
Tamaki just sat on the sidelines, trying not to be obvious when he was staring at you
You explained how you had gotten hurt, and then gestured to your leg that was wrapped up
“Recovery Girl wanted to give me crutches, but I told her I’m not a weakling!”
Tamaki couldn’t help but chuckle, and that’s when you finally noticed him
“Oh forgive me, this is Tamaki! Tamaki, this is Y/n from Aizawa’s 1-A class. Y/n, this is my student Tamaki. He’s apart of The Big Three.”
A first year student??? With a body and face like that???
Wait, no... she shouldn’t think such dirty thoughts.
Over the next few weeks, he somehow runs into you a lot
Like... too much to be just a coincidence
Little does he know that you are just as smitten with him as he is with you
You give him your number, and it takes the power of Nejire and Mirio to get him to text you
When he does, you’re so happy
The four of you make plans to go to a café down the street, and you guys have a good time
You learn that Tamaki’s shy, but he has a lot to say
Mirio makes sure to ask a lot about you, hoping that you and Tamaki will build something cute
Him and Nejire already ship it
Over the next few weeks, Tamaki finally grows comfortable around you
That is, until the dance comes around
Tamaki is terrible at dancing, but lucky for him you aren’t
“That’s it! Every day, from 2 pm to 4 pm, we are dancing!”
You teach him everything Mina taught you
You guys grow close, really close
Finally, the dance comes around and Nejire dresses you up in the cutest dress possible, which happens to show off your chest immediately
Tamaki is quick to let you borrow his jacket
You tell Tamaki to go dance with a pretty girl when he says that the prettiest girl there is you
You’re not stupid, and end up dancing with him the entire time, laughing and joking
You realize that you couldn’t have had a better time with anybody else
When you’re walking home, it starts raining, so you two squeeze under an umbrella and hold hands
When you’re about to go inside your dorm, he decides it’s now or never and kisses you
You kiss back, and smile
Is he dating you now? He needs to talk to Mirio and Nejire for several moments about how he’s questioning everything.
But he doesn’t question that you like him, and he likes you back.
You’re his favorite person in the entire world.
Nejire
When Aizawa calls her, Tamaki, and Mirio to his class, you stick out to her
It’s like there’s a glow around you the entire time, and she can’t look away
She doesn’t really hear much before they have to go back to class
She’s not stupid! She knows she likes you!
She makes it her mission to know your name, quirk, friend group, and to find your old year book
She even makes her two best buds help her out
They think it’s creepy, but at the same time cute
She’s just so fond of you!
She finally talks to you in the cafeteria and is her own bubbly self
She easily becomes friends with you and invites you to a movie
“You’ll be my date!”
You both laugh it off, but she has a plan
She buys your tickets first, far away from all the people
She then buys you one soda with two straws, and your favorite candy bar which she made Tamaki find out
By the end of the scary movie after Mirio found out you were easily scared
You’re holding her hand and pulling her close
She isn’t watching the movie
Near the end of the night, you’re holding her hand tightly as you walk home to your dormitory
Good thing she had Mirio dress up as a ghost to scare you from the bushes
By the end, you two cannot be closer
“I don’t know about you but I had fun.”
You agree, and she bends down to kiss you
You kiss back slowly and passionately
“Well then I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Gosh, why do you have to be so cute?
Mirio
Mirio couldn’t be in love with you! You’re like a little sister to him!
At least that’s what he is thinking when you walk by him in that bathing suit in swim practice
Mirio always comes to your swim meets, you’re just so good!
But you also look sooooo good.
He doesn’t like the way your young coach looks at you. Mirio wants to kill him.
Doesn’t he know that you belong to Mirio? Or... as a friend obviously.
Today Mirio cannot think about all that though, it’s the day of the Sports Festival.
After months of you and him training together, it’s your time to shine.
Your quirk is amazing, and you easily make it into the top 4.
You’re fighting Tokoyami when he run around him, swing your legs around his head, and throw him out of the arena.
Mirio jumps out of his seat, along with most of the arena in applause.
Mirio’s crying, he’s literally crying
He’s only known you for three months when you got into 1-A
But ever since then, his life was changed thanks to you
He was able to talk about his issues to you, have sleepovers with you, and he had taught you how to drive
You two needed each other more than you’d ever know.
But during that entire time, you had only talked about one dream of yours!
Winning the Sports Festival!!
And here you were, about to accomplish your dream
As the final round came, you weren’t able to talk to anyone
The festival had already gone on for too long
Your final opponent is one of your classmates, Katsuki Bakugo
“Just so you know, I’m not going easy on you because you’re a girl, or my friend.”
“Just know I won’t go easy on you because you’re a guy, or my friend.”
He grinned, and then the sound signaling the start rang out in your ears
In a moment of desperation, Bakugo leapt forward, explosions coming towards you left or right
In the smoke and dust, you were able to run out of his sight and disappear into the dust
Mirio was watching, terrified as he watched fire graze your skin and burn you
He heard you yell, before you jumped behind Bakugo
From above the arena, Mirio found himself biting his nails in worry
You were getting hurt, and going up against one of the most violent people he knew
It didn’t matter that you were one of Bakugo’s only friends, he wanted to win
But so did you...
it scared Mirio that he knew that neither of you would give up, and with both of your quirks together, it would be a messy fight.
The fight was mainly Bakugo firing shots at you, and you dodging every one of them
It was obvious that you were showing off, hoping that hero agencies would take note of your skill against someone so desperate to hurt you
Mirio and everyone else could see Bakugo quickly running out of energy, but so were you
You looked thirsty, out of breathe, and like your entire body was aching
You were using your quirk to propel you around like that, and Mirio knew that you were already overdoing it
Luckily he had packed his backpack with chips and your water bottle
The moment Bakugo took a moment to breathe, you ran at him and kicked him in the stomach, sending him out of the stadium into the wall
“Katsuki Bakugo is out of the arena! Y/n L/n wins the sports festival!” Midnight yelled into the speaker, beginning to walk up to you before you fell to your knees weakly, smiling ear-to-ear
The entire stadium erupted into screaming of joy, as practically everyone had been rooting for the cute, sweet girl against the rude, loud, violent guy
Even Endeavor could be seen clapping off the sidelines!
Mirio looked around to see Ochako shaking Asui ecstatically, Denki and Sero crying happily for their Minecraft girlfriend, and Aizawa and Mic, who were staring, happily shocked, at you.
Mirio just sat there though, staring at you with hearts in his eyes
You were the most perfect thing in the entire world
Once you were finally let go of the nagging press and all the wonderful pro heroes congratulating you, you got in line with your friends to board the bus
“Y/n! Wait!”
You turned to see Mirio sprinting after you, hoping to catch you before you went back to school
He needed to talk to you now or never
“Here! Don’t forget!” He handed you your water bottle and a bag of chips, as well as the sweatshirt you had asked him to hold
“You’re so sweet. Tha-”
He stopped you mid-sentence by kissing you, cupping your face sweetly
You pulled back, appalled by your best friend’s actions as a regretful look spread across Mirio’s face immediately
“I’m so sorry Y/n, I’ve just been feeling a certain way about y-” Mirio was interrupted by you squirting a little bit of water onto his face from your water bottle
“You’re so cute Miri.” You winked at him before turning to the bus, to see all your classmate’s faces pressed against the window, not even trying to hide the fact that they were watching
“Might as well give them something to watch.” You laughed, before grabbing his collar and pulling him into another deep kiss

Favorite Benny books?
Ok so. Tumblr crashed as I was typing this on mobile. I am retyping it on desktop cause fuck this site, and I Have Opinions, and my friend I will let you hear them or so help me!
.... This got. Really. Really long. I am adding a read more to spare you guys from that.
Ok so! As a preface, I haven't read many VNAs with Benny in it, and of her solo books, I still have 2 of her Legion books to read.
I'm going to (re)start this with the VNAs!
Love and War: a very classic answer perhaps, but it is a really good introduction for Benny, even if the book has its flaws and can certainly show its age nowadays. Cornell absolutely nails her right off the bat, and from her very first page, Benny is just a character that keeps you interested. Not only does she work great as a counter to both Seven and Ace, but she also brings a breath of life to the whole range the way only a prose character can.
Plus, I think one of the greatest successes of that book lies in how Benny appears as a rounded and flawed person from the beginning. She’s not your ordinary girl dragged to a whirlwind of adventure and an universe of wonders, but an older, adult woman, with a good chunk of life experience and adventures already behind her, and while setting foot inside the TARDIS opens up a new and unexpected chapter in her life, it does also remain just that. A chapter. Benny had a life before the Doctor, and from that moment, while noone could have predicted it then, she would have one after him as well.
The Left-Handed Hummingbird: I just finished that one last week, so it’s obviously both fresh in my mind, and one I'm thinking highly of at the moment. Well I mean, it’s Orman! Or course I love it. She really is great at writing both intricate, large stories, and yet focusing on the personal, on the human side of things. And I find that this book does a great job at putting benny in the role of the grounding presence both for ace and the doctor, as well as exploring how time traveling as they do, and dealing with seven’s schemes can be frustrating for benny. That whole tardis team is a mess, and none of these people really… work well together, but it’s because they’re so dysfunctioning that they’re fascinating, and orman absolutely nails that.
Theater of War: A very different type of book, it is honestly a fun romp, and it has Benny being an actual archeologist, down to dealing with the academia side of things. And it’s the little things, but I love it when Benny books remember that about her tbh? Also, it has some nice theater theming, and well, as an introduction for brax, it certainly works well! It’s one of those VNAs that I think is just fun. A well crafted story with good takes on the characters, that’s always enjoyable to me!
Return of the Living Dad: Orman again?? What a surprise! But frankly, I love how this book is all about Benny and her daddy issues, be it with the Doctor or well, her actual dad. Between that, her budding marriage with Jason, and finding out so many old wounds reopened, I just. Really love how raw Benny can be under Orman’s pen? How underneath it all, she still has that side of the scared orphan that lost both parents to a war she was far, far too young to ever comprehend, and how that just left her rebelling against the world in general, and resenting deep down her parents for that abandon. I mean, it’s neat character stuff, but it can very easily be written as dull & cliche shitte you know? And Orman really… always get down to the heart of it all, and boi does it make for some great reading.
The Dying Days: It’s a very fun book, and well, technically works as the first round for Benny as the lead woman after all! It’s a joy all throughout, triumphant where it needs to be, and managing to both celebrate the Doctor and what he brought to the VNAs, as well as setting up the stage for Benny to go on to her own range. It’s basically one last run of the old team, and well. I do love Benny & Eight, and yes I am blaming Parkin for it. Also, big brained take to have Eight give her Wolsey because I love that cat and Benny deserves a cute kitty in her life. We all do.
Ok!! Now on to the NA, and my personal favorite era!
Dragon’s Wrath: It’s a fun one!! I do really like the story being centered again on archeology first and foremost, and it’s a good romp that has some really good take on Benny. Especially the trial scenes, I love how those one get down to Benny as someone who despite everything, loves history, and cares very very deeply about the artifacts she uncovers. Also, it introduces brax as a mainstay of the dellah era, and does so in a rather nice way. Overall, a very enjoyable book!
Beyond the Sun: Benny & students stranded on a planet with mystery to uncover, that’s already a fun premise, and then throw in all the various queer themes present, especially with Emile, and the whole scene of them all in drag performing on top of a bus, and it’s just a rather good book. Plus, I love how it mirrors the whole VNA Doctor mantra, except with a very Benny twist. Sometimes cruel, sometimes cowardly, but trying her damndest to do good. And well, that’s just Benny isn’t it? I always harp on about the very heart of Benny being her humanity, and if there’s something that book highlights, it’s that.
Deadfall: Jason takes center stage in this one, and well, I do really love Jason. It’s overall a fun book with some nice lore ideas, and I love how it works Cwej in the whole Dellah setting. Also, at least it’s a story with Jason in the lead that doesn’t end in utter tragedy, and that’s always nice!
Tempest: Ok so. That book isn’t great. The story’s cliche, the characters aren’t the best, and the plot itself? Forgettable, it’s another in the list of “sort of base under siege story in the dellah era” which you’d think wouldn’t be super common and yet! So… why am I listing it here? Cause the concept of the planet!! The idea of a world of storms and disaster, run through via a blind train as the only means of transport? The fantastic animal life described in it??? That book left an impression of me, and that’s not something I can say of all of the others.
The Medusa Effect: … Justin Richard writes a good Benny. Like, legit. I love how that one really works with the setting & history of Dellah, and gives further information on the planet’s involvement with the Dalek war. Plus, it also got some really, really nice aesthetics. I am soft for good aesthetics ok? Benny, dancing with a skeleton on the deck of an old spaceship made to look like a cruise liner in an hallucination/dream sequence type of thing? Sign me right up!
Beige Planet Mars: That one is a blast. I remember just, absolutely loving it when I read it tbh. Between the overall description of Mars, the further Lore Implication of the Mars invasion & all that, as well as it basically being one last round of more… Normal dellah books before everything goes to hell? It’s one i’d highly recommend if you want to have a good time.
Tears of the Oracle: Probably my favorite of that whole range? (apart from dead romance, which I am not counting as a benny book) I love just, how much overall… feelings isn’t quite the words i’m looking for, but i can’t think of a better way to put it… there is throughout the book? It was thought to be the end of the NA as it was written and well, that shows. I love how it weaves the whole mystery of “what happened to that legendary archaeologists?” with the whole side of what’s basically some of the only survivors from dellah going on one last round of discovery. The status quo of the range was destroyed quite a few books before that one, but imo, it’s there that they take the time to stop for a bit, and just. Deals with what that means in actuality. And ngl, I love the entire sequence of Benny & Brax walking through the wreckage of what used to be their home, it’s a scene that works really, really well.
And well, it does a great job at setting up the future as well after all! Yes, there’s still 3 books after it, but when you look at where Big Finish picked up… they went for what Tears of the Oracle was setting up. It really makes the transition flows well between those two, unlike my rambling for a full paragraph before going to “here’s the BF books I like”
The Doomsday Manuscript: A very good start for the range! Not only does it set up the whole collection, but it also introduces the Fifth Axis as a major threat, and does so in a wonderfully well paced book that keeps you hooked throughout. I like how it also sets up Jason’s loss as something Benny is still suffering over, as well as how she hasn’t lost hope in finding him again. Plus frankly, it’s also a really good story.
The Glass Prison: You’d think that for a book where Benny spends the majority of it in prison and not very active due to being near the end of her pregnancy, not much would happen, but the way Jacqueline Rayner builds up an atmosphere of unease, mistrust and a genuine disturbing ambiance throughout the book is just, fantastic.
Genius Loci: This book. This book!!! Ben Aaronovitch writes an absolutely powerful story of Benny as a young woman, lost and finding herself faced with far more responsibility than she ever thought possible. The way he writes the whole mystery, while also making Benny as a 20yo not only believable, but quite distinct from Benny as the adult we’ve all come to know and love is just. So good. My main grip with this book is how abruptly it ends, and how we’ll never get the sequel. I want to read Terra Incognita and more of Benny slowly finding herself damn it!
Dead Men Diaries: Just like Doomsday Manuscript, does a great job at establishing the collection as well as the recurring cast. I really enjoy most of the stories in it, and I think BF started out so strong on those books srsly!
A Life in Pieces: I love it so much. It’s pure brax at his most manipulative, and for such petty reasons. I really like how it both deals with the aftermath of the Fifth Axis occupation, as well as the repercussions Brax’s schemes have for the people living on the collection. Also, it’s just 3 very good novellas in a row that build up to something more, and I always like seeing that.
Nobody’s Children: That book has the best Draconian story in the entirety of doctor who and related. Like, yeah just that. It’s also nice to see the fallout of the Mim/Draconian war. It’s one I didn’t expect a lot out of, and frankly, I ended up really loving it.
The Vampire Curse: The middle novella is one I absolutely hated, but the other two are really good, and mixing benny and vampires is just, very fun. Also!! Predating the Predator is in it, and it is a really good take on vampires in a science fiction setting that also has some nice creep factor as well, and manages to be both a good vampire story, and a good sci fi story, which isn’t always an easy balance to find.
Life During Wartime: It’s a surprisingly hard hitting anthology about living under a fascist regime, and the compromises you have to make, the personal sacrifices and small rebellions. Honestly, there’s a lot I love about it, but certainly one of my favorite moment, is when Benny, having to dine with one of the officers, miss jones & jason, sees that the officer is nearly on to her hiding peter away, and that split second moment of “if I have to, I am willing to kill everyone in this room to protect my son” before he just laughs it off, it’s a lot of tiny moments that build up to a really well done ambiance tbh.
Something Changed: While it did the terrible, terrible sin of introducing Doggles to the world, I really love the concept of every chapter after the first being a different split universe, and how they’re all spiraling more & more out of control. It’s got some really good stories in between too, though they can also be rather hit & miss. An aspect I love about it too is how impactful Wolsey’s death ends up being.
Present Danger: That one is fun, I love how it’s basically everyone vs the deindum, a situation slipping more and more out of control, mixed with some neat stuff one the deindum’s whole temporal deal. It’s again a bit hit & miss, but it’s still a blast, and as the last anthology of the collection era, it does send it all off with a bang.
Welp. Far, far too many words later, and here we are!!! I love Benny a lot ngl, and I genuinely think that prose is the medium best suited for her. I have been rather disappointed with the more modern books, I find them far more bland than what I personally expect from Benny but ah well. Can’t always get everything.
And while it’s neither a book, nor even an official story in any mean, the fanfic “Sepelio” that’s an Hannibal au set in the Dellah era is great, and the benny story I have been enjoying the most lately. I would be remiss not to at least mention it!

Falling For You But You Are Worlds Away: Chapter 3
A/N: I had a day off from school and finished some of my homework so I had some time to write. Please don't expect this consistency, it's a rare occurrence lol
AO3
Simon’s stomach was in knots all day. Several times, he felt the urge to rush to the restroom and throw up.
His first couple of days in New York went fine. His aunt and cousin showed him around all the tourist areas, bought him souvenirs, and took him to their favorite restaurants. He even got a picture with Elmo at Times Square. (Why were there so many Sesame Street characters?!) They also got him a new phone number, showed him how to navigate the bus and the subway, and talked to him in English so he could practice.
Simon’s English wasn’t terrible, per se. He grew up watching shows and movies in English with Swedish subtitles. And he didn’t do too bad in his English classes. But, he never had to speak it 24/7 before.
So, when he walked into his new school with Ana, he was immediately bombarded with all the English words, phrases, and slang – it all made his head swirl. Ana introduced him to some people she knew, they spoke to him in English, and he stumbled through his answers. And, sadly, because Ana was a grade ahead of him, he was left alone to fend for himself when it came to time to go to classes.
He did manage to fake confidence, introducing himself to his classmates and answering a few questions. He could follow the lessons just fine and answered when called upon by teachers (except in American History, he definitely needed help there). But, for the most part, he stayed quiet.
At lunch, he sat with Ana, who introduced him to her friends. All three were girls. Two of them were Latina, Alicia and Luz, and one girl was white, Elizabeth (“You can call me, Liz,” she told him). They spoke to each other in Spanish (even Liz) and it was the first time all day that Simon felt the unease in him boil down to a simmer. It was still there but hearing the familiar language was a comfort.
And he now knew why Ana insisted they packed lunch – the school’s food didn’t look that appetizing. Even Hillerska had better food. (And thinking of Hillerska made him think of Wille, which just made him feel depressed again.)
When his last class of the day finally dismissed them, Simon was ready to go home and take a nap. He was exhausted – physically and mentally. But, Ana had other plans.
“Hello, everyone! As you can see, we have someone new joining us today!”
She gestured to him with a flourish and Simon blushed in embarrassment as many eyes focused on him – curious and interested.
“This is my cousin, Simon, he just moved here from Sweden. I hope everyone makes him feel welcomed. Please don’t scare him off.”
Simon awkwardly shuffled his feet as he waved. “Um… Hi… Um… I’m Simon. Sorry, uh, my English isn’t very good. But, I’m practicing.”
He was met with silent nods and Simon almost sighed in relief. Almost.
“You look familiar!” A guy with long blonde hair piped up from the back.
Simon’s stomach churned and he wanted to run away. No one was supposed to know who he was. They reassured him that the whole thing died down fairly quickly in America. How many of these kids have watched the video?! Did they know who he was as soon as he walked in?!
“You look like a Spanish version of Nick Jonas!” continued the guy.
The churning calmed a little.
Ana glared, placing her fists against her hips. “Shut up, Darren. Simon is not the Spanish version of anyone.” She paused and glanced at him. “But, if he is, he would be Harry Styles.”
“It’s the curls!” a girl with dark hair with pink tips called out with a grin. “They’re really cute!”
Before he knew what was happening, Simon was bombarded with compliments about his hair and face. He could swear he had never been as red in his entire as he was in that moment.
Soon, a different guy stepped up, willing everyone to calm down with his hands. “Okay, everyone, stop simping over Ana’s cousin. It’s time to start the meeting! We have a lot to talk about today!”
Ana nudged Simon and gestured with her head to the back of the classroom. Simon followed her. She took a seat next to the window. The empty seat beside her was across from the guy who spoke up earlier.
As the guy at the front (“That’s Dominic, he’s the president of GSA,” Ana had whispered to him) began to go over the agenda for the day, the guy next to Simon leaned over.
“Hey, I’m Darren,” he whispered with a toothy grin. “I’m your resident pansexual.”
Simon bit his lip and whispered back. “Simon. Do we… have to share our sexuality here?”
Darren chuckled and shook his head. “Nah, you’re not obligated to. Some people are here just as allies but a couple do end up figuring themselves out. So we tend not to label or share labels. But, I don’t give a shit, I want everyone to know they have an equal chance of dating me. So, that includes you.”
He winked and Simon, to his horror, felt himself blush again. He was just gonna end up looking like a tomato by the time he returned to Sweden if he kept this up.
“Darren! Anything you wanna share with the class?”
“Nope, prez. Just welcoming our new member. Please proceed, you know we love listening to your gorgeous voice.”
Dominic raised an eyebrow at him before getting back to what he was saying.
“I’ll get you to say ‘yes’ to me, eventually,” Darren muttered under his breath.
Simon couldn’t stop a chuckle from leaving his lips. Darren flashed him a grin and, for what it was worth, Simon finally felt a bit at ease.
He snuck a look at Ana, who caught his eye and smiled, encouragingly.
Maybe she was right. He could meet new people here and make new friends. Maybe, for just a few months, he could forget everything that happened in Sweden and just be... back to normal.
He was willing to try. If only this empty feeling inside him would go away.
.........
If Wilhelm thought that Christmas break without Simon was bad, being at school for a month without Simon was worse. Everywhere he looked and turned, he half expected Simon to be there, looking at his phone or eating a clementine or flashing Wilhelm a smile that made his cute dimples appear.
More times than he could count, Wilhelm had run after Sara, practically begging her for any information on Simon. The girl always refused him.
“Give her time,” Felice said to him one day after another failed attempt. “She loves her brother and she’s on his side.”
“I just want another chance to apologize,” said Wilhelm. “I want to make things right. And I want to at least be friends with him again.”
Felice wrapped an arm around him. “You will. Just give it time, okay?”
Wilhelm had agreed, if only to reassure himself that he was going to be fine. Maybe the longing would stop. Maybe he would wake up one day and just accept the fact that Simon was no longer in his life.
He knew it was all a big fat lie but it was okay to dream, right?
Which was why he decided to take his chances that one Saturday. Students were allowed to leave the school grounds on weekends to visit the town, if they so pleased, so Wilhelm took advantage of that. With Johan driving and Malin in the passenger’s seat, they left Hillerska for the day and headed to Bjarstard.
His stomach was filled with butterflies. Excitement or nerves, he wasn’t sure. Maybe it was both. He ran over various things to say in his head. But, when they pulled up in front of the familiar one-story home, he forgot it all.
Nevertheless, he raised his chin and marched with determination to the front door. He hoped Simon was home. That Wilhelm could finally see him. That they could finally talk. He just hoped he wasn’t overstepping any boundaries, that was the last thing he wanted to do.
Clearing his throat, he raised a fist and knocked, firmly and loudly, against the door. It took a minute but, eventually, it slowly opened, very slowly.
Linda peeked out, looking wary and cautious. But, when she saw Wilhelm, the guarded look switched to surprise.
“Wil… Your Royal Highness,” she greeted with a slight bow of her head.
Wilhelm hated it. He preferred Linda’s casual treatment of him as if he was any other kid. He supposed he didn’t deserve that anymore after what he did to her son.
“Wilhelm, please,” he said to her, managing a small smile. “Hello, Linda.”
The woman smiled, fondly, and she opened the door a bit wider. “Hello, Wilhelm. How are you, cariño?”
The gentler tone eased his worries.
“I’m… fine.” He cleared his throat. “Um… Is Simon home?”
Linda’s smile disappeared. “Why?” she asked.
Wilhelm flinched, hating that the guardedness in her voice was back. “I just want to talk to him. He left Hillerska and I… I just want to apologize again and… Please.”
He must have looked rather pitiful because he could practically see Linda’s resolve melting. She stared at him for the longest time, contemplating. Finally, she nodded and let him in.
Wilhelm’s heart skipped a beat and he had to hold himself back from running in and calling out Simon’s name. Malin, dutifully, followed behind him, shut the door, and stood guard.
“You can head on to the living room,” said Linda. “I’ll make us some tea.”
Wilhelm nodded and did exactly that. He made himself comfortable on the lumpy couch and looked around. The place looked neat and chaotic as always. A basket of Simon’s favorite, clementines, was placed at the center of the coffee table. He once told Wilhelm that it was the one fruit he couldn’t live without.
Then, he spotted a new addition against the wall that led towards the bedrooms. Well, not new per se but it was no longer in Simon’s room. (And, thinking of Simon’s room led him down a path of memories that made the longing in him increase tenfold. Where was Simon? Was he out for the day? Wilhelm would wait until night if he had to.)
“Here we are.”
Linda arrived with a tray filled with two mugs of tea and a plate of cookies. She placed it on the coffee table before handing one of the mugs to Wilhelm.
“Thank you,” he said taking it and looking back at the fish tank that was now placed against the wall. “Why did Simon move his fish out here?”
Linda, who was in the middle of placing the plate of cookies on the table, looked up towards the tank. A sad smile graced her lips.
“Well, I have to remember to feed them now so it’s easier if I see them,” she said, picking up her own mug and settling on the couch.
Wilhelm frowned, confused. “Why do you have to feed them? Doesn’t Simon do that?”
Linda looked at him for a moment, sad again, and took a sip of tea before placing the mug on the table. She tugged her wool sweater tighter around herself and crossed her arms at her stomach.
“Wilhelm,” she began. “I want you to know that… I’m not angry with you, okay? And, I’m sure that Simon isn’t either.”
Wilhelm’s stomach churned and he took a polite sip of the tea before following Linda’s lead and placed the mug on the table.
“What happened to both of you… you don't deserve it.” She reached out, probably to touch his hair, but refrained at the last minute. Instead, she patted his shoulder and pulled her hand back.
Wilhelm longed for her motherly touch.
“But, as a parent, I had to protect Simon.”
He swallowed the lump in his throat and brought a hand up to rub at his tightening chest. He didn't like her tone. It was foreboding. The gentle calm before the storm.
Linda’s eyes flickered to his hand and scooted closer. She placed a gentle hand on his cheek. Wilhelm leaned into it.
“Wilhelm… cariño… Simon left Sweden.”
Wilhelm’s world crashed.
“There were stalkers, they kept following him home. And the reporters wouldn’t stop asking him questions and one day… he got hurt.”
The tightening in his chest wouldn’t let up and he rubbed harder.
“I had no other choice. I had to send him away for his own safety.”
Stalkers... Reporters... Simon got hurt because of him. And, now, he was gone. No longer in Sweden.
“W-Where?” he managed to ask.
But, Linda shook her head. “I’m sorry, but I can’t tell you.”
Wilhelm’s eyes stung. “L-Linda… I-I’m s-sorry… I’m so… s-so sorry…”
Finally… Finally… Linda moved closer and pulled him into a hug. Wilhelm couldn’t help himself. He hugged her back and cried into her sweater.
She rubbed his back, whispering, “I know. It’s okay to cry, Wille. It’s okay.”
Wilhelm didn’t know how long he cried but, at some point, he did calm down. Maybe it was because Linda started humming a nice melody to him. Or maybe he was just spent and tired. But, not once did Linda let him go. Despite everything, she still chose to comfort him.
He had to force himself to move away from her arms, guilty and grateful at the same time.
She smiled at him. “Feeling better?” she asked.
God, it reminded him so much of Simon always asking after him that he wanted to cry again. It was clear to see that Simon got his gentle kindness from his mother.
“Yes,” he croaked. “Thank you.”
She picked up his mug and handed it over with a pointed look. He obediently drank the now lukewarm tea. It did little to soothe his sadness, but it was still nice.
“He won’t be gone forever,” said Linda with a smile. “When this all dies down… when the country forgets and moves on to something new, he’ll come back. Just… for now… I need him safe in a place where no one knows him. It’s what’s best for him.”
It made perfect sense. But, it didn’t mean that Wilhelm liked it. Simon was further away from him than ever. At least, if he was still Bjarstard, Wilhelm could still visit. He could still try to rebuild their friendship. And, when he was finally ready, he could ask Simon to give him another chance.
But, now, Wilhelm didn’t even know where he was. And Linda clearly didn’t want to tell him, worried she was about Simon’s safety. (A part of him wondered if she was also protecting Simon from Wilhelm. That thought hurt but it wasn’t out of the realm of possibility.)
“Would you like to stay for lunch?” Linda asked. “It’s kind of lonely with just me now, with Sara at Hillerska and Simon...” She trailed off and sighed.
Wilhelm pressed his lips together. “I don’t want to impose.”
She patted his arm and offered a smile. “Not at all. Your bodyguards can join us, too. I have plenty. I’m still not used to eating alone.”
The temptation was too good to resist. Besides, he didn’t want to return to Hillerska and suffer through a meal where August only sat a couple of chairs away, always wanting to talk to him even though Wilhelm never responded.
“Alright,” he agreed, smiling back.
Linda beamed and stood up. “Okay, good. I’m almost done cooking. Make yourself at home.”
“Can I… Can I feed Simon’s fish?” he asked, nervously.
Linda chuckled. “Of course. Their food is right on top. You can just move the cover. Simon says four shakes is enough.”
With one last smile at him, she gathered up their mugs (she left the cookies on the table) and headed off to the kitchen. He heard her extend the invitation to Malin, who thanked her and promised to call Johan in.
Pulling himself together, Wilhelm stood up and approached the fish tank. A small container labeled “fish food” in Simon’s familiar print was on top. He picked it up before carefully moving the cover to the side. He counted out four shakes and watched as the little bits of food floated down towards Olle, Oski, Felle, and a fourth fish whose name Simon never told him (because Wilhelm had distracted him enough to forget).
“I miss him,” he whispered, watching them eat. “I bet you, guys, do too, right?”
The fish ignored him.
Were they mad at him, he wondered? Did they know what he did? Did Simon cry in front of them?
Sighing, Wilhelm put the cover back and the fish food on top of it. Then, he headed off to the kitchen to help Linda set the table.
It was the least he could do.
...
A/N: Yes, I went back to watch the scene and counted Simon's fish lol

OH-EM-GEE-
It's really been a while since I updated this story, I really thought it was a couple of months ago, I’ve been very busy lately and just kept pushing writing for later, and later transformed into 8 months! I had to admit that I also had a huge block with this story, but recently I got a lot of inspiration and energy, chapter 6 is almost ready but editing needs to be done after all. Hopefully this would be a good one! There’s more details coming in future chapters and also new characters! I got a thing for OCs recently, I feel they add more personality to the story!
Enjoy!

5: Aldera Chronicles
‘Just a good day’ That was what you prayed, asked for last night, and what you tried to repeat to yourself to keep calm and serene while you looked desperately for your earphones. As soon as you did, you connected them to your phone and searched for the loudest song you kept in your collection.
“Oi! I’m talking to you dumbface!”
The loudest one of all.
After the whole ‘neighbors fiasco’ you got stuck with Bakugou on your way to school, both of your mothers insisted that you should go to school together at least today, so you could ‘amend your differences and get closer’ you almost gag at the suggestion, but your mom looked so ecstatic about the idea of you making new friends, after all she hasn’t looked that excited in a while, so you could not find yourself saying no to her.
Although you ‘accepted’, that didn’t mean that you will stay with him all the way to school, right now you were still in their field of vision, so if you left him behind, they will notice. You were just waiting for the perfect moment, as soon as you made it to the end of the street and turned to the left, you will take that as a cue to hop on your bike and leave him behind eating your dust.
“What a shity morning, stuck with this idiot. That friking hag threaten me to change the wifi password if I didn’t come and to top it off, she had the fucking nerve to take my phone, fan-fucking-tastic…” Bakugou was right in front of you grumbling angrily and throwing profanities left and right. His anger was more than evident; he was more hunched over than normal; his hands were way deeper in his pockets to the point you thought he could rip them open and his feet were stomping on the ground with such intensity that you could almost feel it vibrate under your own.
Despite the fact that you could not see his face, you could bet your (F/C) post-its that there was an extra deep scowl and curled pouty lips ‘decorating’ his face right now. You tried to distract yourself with your phone and avoid Bakugou as much as possible, it was bad enough to spend more time with him than you already did in school, not to mention that unwanted encounters may become commonplace being next-door neighbors.
You sighted dejected at the thought, you really were kind of excited about moving to a new city, Musutafu was way bigger than Sapporo was, with bigger malls, parks, shops, restaurants and more fun things to do. But sadly for you, Bakugou manage to crush your hopes and expectations as soon as he opened his mouth, hell, even by existing actually.
Your attention was snaped back to reality when the sound of cars passing by and other students came to you. You got on your bike again, getting in front of Bakugou so you could reach the avenue faster, “Oi! Don’t go in ahead of me dumbshit!” You ignored him as he yelled at you, his words more and more inaudible as you got farther.
After a few minutes you had lost him completely, he probably went the opposite direction to the bus stop or the train station, Aldera was close, but not enough to go walking, you did it there in twenty five minutes with your bike if you took your time, fifteen if you were in a rush, you made sure to verify how long it would take you to get there the days prior that you had to actually go back to school.
You decided to relax and enjoy the view of the city and listen to your favorite songs like the day before. Luckily the Tatooine Station was open, safe and working at its fullest.
“Not a single villain in sight, phew, how good that they managed to clear the area otherwise I would have had to…” Suddenly memories of your crossing trough Dump Beach™ came to you, that was an experience you were so willing to don’t repeat ever again. “I wonder who else from my school had to make a detour like me yesterday, or if someone was involved in the incident… those ladies said it was a middle schooler, but it’s quite ambiguous data to make any conclusive statements, there are hundreds of middle schools in Musutafu and the commercial district is in the center, so it could be anyone.”
You stopped in front of a crosswalk, waiting for the light to change. ‘I’ll ask Midoriya if he knows something else, he probably passed by or something’. You had to admit that you were kind of excited about the idea of befriending the green head, even with his nervous, anxious, jumpy and shy personality he gave you a kind and sweet vibe. His insecurity gave away his true nature; his clumsiness, the nervousness, overanalyze everything, the mutter, for some they could be annoying but you found it rather and oddly fascinating, it made him feel real, genuine and honest.
‘He’s almost like…’
The chirping sound of the traffic light snapped you out of your rampant thoughts announcing that the light had finally turned green. You started off with your bike along the rest of the pedestrians and continued on your way to the school.
The rest of the way to Aldera passed without any hitch, you left your bike locked and took your stuff to walk to the shoe lockers like yesterday, just a few feet ahead you distinguish a very familiar mop of green curly hair. He seemed slightly hunched and deep in thought, probably way too deep in thought to the point that you could see a colorful smeared aura surrounding him and the word mutter coming out of his mouth. And you were not the only one, as you could see the people around walking away, with slightly perturbed expression on their faces. You just took it as a cue to let your presence being known.
“Good morning Midoriya!” You hopped by his side and greeted him enthusiastically. The poor thing almost had a heart attack and jumped out of his own skin as you just scared the shit out of him. He released a muffled scream and seem to calm down a tiny bit to immediately turn the shade of a tomato and babble a greeting.
“G-G-G-G-G-Good mo-morning Shinohara-san! You-You-You caught me by su-surprise.” He squeaked as he covered his face with his arms and his eyes moved erratically to look everywhere but you.
“Did I scare you? I’m sorry! I guess I let myself go a little bit.” You trailed, resting a palm against your nape.
“Oh nonono! Please don’t apologize! Y-Y-You were been courteous after all. He whispered breathlessly at the end fidgeting his fingers nervously. “I…nobody ever greets me or says good morning, I didn't expect it and that's why I got a little nervous. T-That’s all, so don’t worry.” His little confession shocked you for a moment, it was really depressing to be honest but it motivated you at the same time.
You beamed confidently at him, “Well Midoriya, I recommend that you get used to it then, because I intend to greet and say goodbye to you every day without fail from now on.”
He looked up at you with a surprised and somewhat puzzled expression, his fingers started to twitch nervously, his countenance became even redder if that was even possible.
“B-B-B-B-B-But Shi-Shinohara-san-!”
“Shush, shush, shush! I am not going to put it up for discussion this is how it’ll be from now on and it's over.” You placed your hands on your hips, a slight scowl adorning your face to accentuate your mock annoyance. “Besides, who will run away from Bakugou with me after I tell him how much of an asshole he is for the umpteenth time in a row?”
You relaxed your demeanor again, offering him a goofy smile, so he could notice that you weren't even mad to begin with. The poor greenette thought for a smidgen that he made you angry and that worried him profusely. But one glance at you told him that you were being sincere, he was scared that you could be trying to play a prank just to make fun of him as it has already happened to him so many times. that alien feeling of relief and tranquility invaded his chest, apparently the chance encounter he had with his childhood hero had been a good omen and brought him more good things that he could imagine.
His eyes teared up with hope and a squiggly smile adorned his face, he dried his tears with his gakuran sleeve and clenched his fists excitedly.
“So, what do you think?” you asked eagerly.
“I look forward for it!”
.
.
“Did you see what happened yesterday at the commercial district? It seemed pretty rough” You commented to Midoriya absentmindedly while you took your uwabaki from your locker. He visibly flinched as he heard your question almost dropping his shoes in the process.
“Ye-Yeah, they said that the pro heroes could hardly put up a fight because of the villain’s quirk.”
“Right? Hopefully All Might was nearby, otherwise who knows what would have happen. I wonder if the hostage is ok, I didn’t watch the news last night so I’m not pretty sure what exactly happened. Do you know how it was?
He flinched again and turned his head to you rigidly as you raised an eyebrow at his sudden odd behavior.
“I do-don’t know a lot but I read that everything was ok afterwards, the hostage walked out with just a couple of scratches, so there’s nothing to be concerned about Shinohara-san, it’s pretty nice of you to worry so much, especially since the hostage…” Midoriya looked down and tapped his trembling indexes together; he wanted to tell you something, but didn’t know how.
“Come on Midoriya, you already told me the hostage is ok, what can be so bad that you are hesitant to tell me?” You inquired him softly.
“Is nothing bad per se, well, you’ll see the hostage…” He paused and looked in all directions to check if anybody was listening. Ok, weird. He got a little closer to you and cupped his mouth with his left hand.
“The pe-person captured yesterday was-”
Your little hush-hush conversation was interrupted when the metallic sound of a locker being abruptly opened echoed in the sudden silent space. Your ears located the unexpected noise behind you and instinctively you turned to see what had caused such a ruckus.
A couple of lockers from you, a really angry and really frustrated Bakugou appeared right in front of your eyes. You observed how out of the blue everything and everybody seemed to freeze in time, and all eyes were on him. The atmosphere turned tense, every person there watched attentively his every movement, talking with just a glance, some people were whispering among themselves no even taking their eyes off him.
‘What the hell is happening?’
He took his uwabaki and slammed them on the floor, removed his shoes and buried them unceremoniously in the locker, slamming the door shut. He grumbled, trying fruitlessly to put his uwabaki, cursing that he couldn't put them on as smoothly as he would’ve liked. He suddenly stopped his movements, acknowledging the unwanted attention he was receiving.
“The hell are you looking at you fucking losers?! Why don’t you mind your own damn business, huh?!”
His voice echoed with fury at the school entrance, despite their obvious fear, nobody moved an inch, all the eyes glued on him. He finished to put on his shoes and stomped further inside. At the corner of his eye he noticed your presence and immediately stared at you, he seemed even more infuriated than before, this clearly soured his mood even further, if that was even possible.
You returned it with one of your own, as intense or more as his, the attention seemed to turn your way as your little staring contest became longer, Midoriya nervously looked between you and him, probably waiting for another showdown to break out, just like yesterday. Everybody’s breath hitched by the minute, but you didn’t back down, your (E/C) eyes met the fiery inferno of his crimson ones, after a couple more seconds he just tsked and stomped away with his hands buried way deep in his pockets.
After he left, the clock started ticking again, everyone took a breath of relief, averted their eyes from his retracting back and continued their lives like always. Midoriya’s shoulders relaxed significantly at the time that his soul slowly returned to his body. When you noticed him more calmed and focused, decided to address the elephant in the room.
“What. The. Heck. Just. Happened?” You whispered bewildered. “Who peed on his cereal? If this is something usual here, I’ll be more than glad to take my bike and go all the way back to Sapporo.” You crossed your arms over your chest and stared irritated at his retracting back.
“Well, now that Captain McTantrum™ left, what was that you wanted to tell me about yesterday’s incident?” You asked relaxing your demeanor to something more gentle and friendly. Midoriya flinched slightly and his poise appear suddenly uneasy.
“Um, well, the person-the-the person th-th-that got trapped by the mud villain, tha-tha-that person…” Midoriya tried over and over but it was useless, he couldn’t complete a single sentence without stumbling over his own words. Noticing that using his words would be useless, he looked at you in the eyes to then wander his gaze, pointing to something behind him. You started at him completely lost while he kept repeating the same cycle of looking at you and then looking away, urging you to get what he was trying to say, not moving his head once, like he was unsure to look back.
You exanimated what was at his back; just a couple of students walking to their respective classrooms, friends greeting each other, and Bakugou turning to the right at the end of the corridor to go upstairs-
‘Wait, Bakugou?’
Then it hit you, the awkward silence when he arrived, the unwanted starring, the murmuring, his more than usual foul mood, the outburst, Midoriya’s reluctance to tell you, he probably though he would get into trouble with him if it reached his ears that stupid Deku was talking shit of him to thief bitch. Everything made sense now. You broke out of your trance and looked at Midoriya “Was Bakugou?-” He eagerly nodded his head, satisfied that you finally understood him.
“Oh, I see…”
“Y-Yes…”
“…”
“…”
“HOLLY SHIT-”
.
.
With the issue clarified and only five minutes left before the class started you two proceeded to go upstairs as well. Midoriya and you made small talk with some intervals of comfortable silence here and there, soon enough you both reached your classroom, people chatting lively when you opened the door. Midoriya walked in just behind you as you made it to your designated seats.
‘If I’m not wrong, Math is our first class of the day’ your mind wandered to other school related topics while you seated at your desk, just as you did the bell ringed and your teacher entered the classroom and started his lesson of the day.
.
.
Midday finally came, which mean it was finally lunch time, you invited Midoriya beforehand to eat with you, he timidly accepted, after a lot of nervous quacking but you could tell he seem excited about the idea. As soon as the bell that announced the so waited lunch break ringed, you proceeded to pack your books and stationery into your bag and take out your bento when your desk was crowded by what it looked like to be all the girls in your class. One of them, a girl with short brown hair and blue eyes was the first to approach you.
“Hey Shinohara! Do you want to have lunch with us? We didn’t actually have the chance to talk yesterday and we thought it would be nice to know you better.” She spoke.
“Yuki-chan is right! Is refreshing to have another girl in the class after almost three years since we are very few, with you we are eight now!” Said another one of them visibly thrilled.
“You looked so cool yesterday when you confronted Bakugou!”
“I think nobody has managed to do that and live after it, or actually do it”
“Right?!”
“So awesome!”
They gave you a really kind and chill vibe, chatting and praising you animatedly. Although they seemed to really enjoy Bakugou’s antics against your green head classmate, well, nobody's perfect, noted. You can’t judge the book by its cover, but when you looked at them, it’s impossible to not think about…
The offer is almost irresistible.
Almost.
“That sounds lovely! But Midoriya and I agreed to have lunch together today, so I’m afraid we’ll have to leave it to another time.” You almost cringed at how cutesy and honeyed your voice sounded but they seemed to buy it, until their expressions made a 180. Their faces were shocked and almost offended at the thought of you putting him over their proposal. It was a ‘are you for real?’ reaction over all. You kept smiling at them to emphasize that you were serious, when the girl that talked first tried to dissuade you.
“B-But why don’t you eat with us today and leave your lunch with him for tomorrow? I’m sure Midoriya won’t have a problem, right?” She turned and looked at him just as the rest of the girls did after she, Midoriya flinched nervously holding his bento at the unexpected attention he was receiving.
“Eh…! I…! Well… Um…”
“You see! He’s ok with it!”
‘He hasn’t even said a thing!’ You thought trying to conceal your disbelief. ‘Let’s put all the beef on the grill then’
“Oh, I got an idea!” You chimed. “Midoriya! Why don’t you join us for lunch too? That way nobody eats alone and we get to know better! It’s a win-win plan! What do you think?” You were not dumb, although it was true you can’t judge anybody by a simple glance, you had a somewhat firm idea of why they were so eager to mingle with you, so you just did what you thought it was necessary to make sure it was not that, and what a better way than with your nerve-wreck of a friend.
‘What a better way to know someone’s character than by the way they treat others?’
The poor guy looked like he was about to have a seizure and your classmates were not any better; they looked at you even more astonished than before, and you could swear that they started to sweat. Suddenly they look to be hesitant, even the more insistent one. They looked at you, at each other and then at Midoriya.
“I-I think you are right, it wasn’t very nice to insist after you already had plans with…Midoriya, I guess we can leave it for another day.” The others seem to agree, a bit crestfallen but relieved nonetheless.
‘I knew it…’
They shortly left after that; you kept your friendly smile until they finally disappeared behind the door, when they were out of your view completely you let your smile fall and collected your lunch from your desk. You marched to the door, but stopped midway when you noticed that certain someone was still standing lost in his own world, mumbling nonsense as usual.
“Midoriya” You called him, he seemed to have got out of his trance and looked at you eyewided, confused and bewildered.
“Huh?”
“Are you coming or what?” You said smiling.
He stared at you genuinely surprised, but he swiftly shook his head and walked towards you.
“Yes!”
“A-Are we going to eat outside?” he asked curiously.
“I mean, it’s a beautiful day the temperature is perfect and this would actually be the first time ever that I had the chance to be outside in early April without freezing my butt. Do you have any place in mind?”
“No, I-I always eat by myself, so I prefer to stay in the classroom” He answered somewhat ashamed.
“Its ok, I know the perfect place.”
