Echidna warriors are inclined to let the youngsters in their tribe win small battles to encourage confidence. They are also inclined to humble those who boast too much confidence lol.

What gets me most about the delivery of, “Maybe there is someone small there that needs my help…”, is the underlying heartbroken manner Roz says it.
Roz absolutely doesn’t regret adopting Brightbill. What she DOES regret doing though is inadvertently deeply hurting her child by keeping the tragedy that brought them together a secret.
It’s slowly clicking for her at this point how deeply fond she’s grown toward him. That natural maternal aspect has become apart of Roz and it’s never going away, no matter what she tries to tell herself.
What I found really touching, yet profoundly sad, is the other line she says to Brightbill’s refusal on accepting her help to fly.
“Your life is not negotiable. If you are willing to do this, you can fly away. And we can both go to where we belong.”
This line portrays where Roz’s priorities truly lie in intentions. She isn’t doing this in the hopes of earning his forgiveness. She isn’t going to scold him for rejecting her as his mother, either. All Roz really wants is for Brightbill to be happy and find his place to fit in. Even if he no longer sees her as his mother. That really hits me hard on rewatches of this movie.
Roz’s completely selfless act of motherhood in helping him to fly in time for the migration is so inspiringly uplifting and heartbreaking all at once. Roz believes she has hurt her son too much to deserve a second chance, yet is still willing to put aside how she feels deep down to help him achieve his goal.
It adds onto why the migration scene is a brilliant work of show don’t tell between Roz & Brightbill’s dynamic. They realize how much they need each other, but are too afraid to openly approach it understandably after what had happened between them. Believing this to be the last time they’ll ever see each other again.
God, this movie has so many loving details.

"Maybe there is someone small there that needs my help..."
This is such a throwaway line but it says SO MUCH. 😭 We saw how Roz first responded to the concept of motherhood. She's not programmed for it. The child stalks her and slows her down. She is damaged and her warranty voided by taking on this task. She's literally lost pieces of herself.
She was just moments before this told that she was defective because of this.
But it doesn't matter. Raising Brightbill has changed her forever. I have heard from my and other mothers that that is very much the norm once you have kids. She believes she has ruined everything, but I don't for a second believe that she regrets taking him in.

It's a part of who she is now, and she loves it. It gives her purpose. She doesn't want to part ways with Brightbill, but in this moment, she's trying to make peace with the fact that she may not have a choice. Even if she has to part ways with Brightbill, she doesn't want to let go of that part of herself. She's still a mother. She always will be. Maybe there's someone small there that needs my help...
#the wild robot#roz the wild robot#brightbill#this movie has so much nuance behind it#the little details really enhance this story greatly

Now that the holidays are moving on out once again, I can have free time to post this. Sonic 3 is hands down the best entry outta all three films, no contest.
It streamlines the Sonic & human characters formula more nicely. Jumps right into exactly what many were wanting. That being Shadow’s amazing introduction. The fucking CHILLS I got hearing that acoustic Live & Learn at the start played by Maria in Shadow’s brief flashback. That’s when I knew I was in for a real gaming movie treat. Keanu does such an excellent job capturing Shadow’s threatening presence, yet contrasted by the underlying melancholic nature, of his tragic background.
What Sonic 3 does best is the conflict between how Sonic & Shadow’s grief plays a big part in the overall thematic use of Live & Learn throughout its run time. Sonic & Shadow’s baggage influences their future lifestyles.
For Sonic, he obviously yearned for a proper family and friends after years of being in hiding. Losing Longclaw at such a young age left deep scars on him. Shadow of course mirrors this losing the only person who didn’t see him as a tool of destruction to fear. Maria in the movie may not have a compelling backstory with terminal illness, but this iteration’s personality is highly entertaining to make up for the exchange. You can immediately buy into why this Shadow would want bloodshed unleashed. Movie Maria is a cheeky, sneaky, and playful kid that gets Shadow to open up emotionally. To stop the mindset of not having to become what these scientists see him as, a monster.
Sonic 3 is the most compelling entry thus far because they take what defines Sonic & Shadow’s backgrounds. Putting them against each other in the third act.
“I’ve spent fifty years reliving what they did to her…This is WHO I AM inside!”
To no surprise, Shadow’s characterization is my favorite part of this whole movie. Any time he appears on screen you know shit is gonna normally hit the fan hard. Sonic’s first thrown down with Shadow at its start sells what a bigger deal he is out of every threat this blue blur has faced previously.
What makes it much harder for Sonic to deal with is when he learns about Shadow’s past. Realizing he is a broken guy, who had his chance at happiness unfairly ripped away puts things into a much bigger perspective. It’s not just about stopping Shadow anymore, but proving his ideals are strong enough to save him from that encompassing pain.
If there was any real critique I have against Sonic 3, it’s Jim Carrey as Gerald. For as much as I enjoy his usual antics as Eggman, they should’ve dialed it back a bit more on Gerald. He should’ve been a much bigger starker contrast in his darker dramatic intentions. This isn’t to say he doesn’t have great moments with Gerald. When he stops screwing around to play it straight, Gerald gets some great dialogue. One line he says to Eggman near the end made me internally go, “Holy shit. That hurt to watch.”.
That criticism aside, Sonic 3 is a love letter to what made SA2, and Shadow The Hedgehog most importantly, an insanely iconic entry for Sonic’s franchise. While my favorite movie outta this whole year goes to The Wild Robot, Sonic 3 is certainly up there in my highlights.
Go see this on the big screen now.

That’s what makes Brightbill’s story so heartbreaking, yet uplifting, at the same time. All of the odds were immediately and unfairly stacked against him.
It’s severely fucked up that within this moment he’s nearly drowned by these bully geese, almost gets eaten by Rockmouth, and finds out afterwards Roz had accidentally crushed his family.
Which embodies what nature is all about being a harsh reality of every animal for themselves in survival.
Wild Robot reminds me so much of a Don Bluth film because God damn this kid gets put through emotional Hell in its middle act.
The circle of life isn’t pretty, but there is an underlying ironic beauty to it as well through Roz giving Brightbill a second chance to live his life to the fullest.
These tragedies throughout makes Roz & Brightbill’s moments of emotional clarity hit harder in retrospect.

You know, I was annoyed for a while at the inclusion of the "bully geese". Like yes, bullies are a crucial part of any story about the "underdog" but if you're like me (esp. if you grew up in the 80s and 90s), you've gotten tired of them REAL quick.
But then I realized: this is yet another factor of one of the film's messages and that's "Y'all, nature is cruel."

This is VERY much something that happens in the real-life wild to runts. Not only are they easy prey, like the film straight-up told us, but they're an easy target among their own kind. In the fight for food, mates, territory, EVERYTHING - runts are smaller and weaker and the easiest individuals to subtract from the fight. (I would normally give a video here as a real-life example but I don't wanna Youtube that. ; A ; You understand.)
It even happens within sibling groups for the same reason. Sadly, if Brightbill's siblings had survived, there's a very real chance that they wouldn't have treated him much better. His "chance to be normal" probably would not have played out like he expected. 😭
#roz the wild robot#the wild robot spoilers#the wild robot#brightbill#the middle act is heartbreaking yet show the beauty of life#brightbill lost his family but gained a devoted mom that defied everything to save his life#it also paints the rockmouth scene in a more morbid light#put Brightbill’s mom in the same scenario and she would’ve only focused on getting the more capable kids to safety if they were in danger

One of my favorite things to do when a great animated film comes out on digital is sit and watch it slowly so I can mull over all the visuals: lighting, animation, background stuff, etc. I'm still catching details all these viewings later and WOW this one hurt. 😭
#the wild robot spoilers#roz the wild robot#the wild robot#I loved these little quiet moments in the film#letting the characters simply stir in their own emotions#this scene in particular is so heartwarming and heartbreaking in unison#roz reminiscing on helping brightbill fly#yet is reluctant to approach him with open arms#she doesn’t want to cause him anymore pain#but also doesn’t want to leave the island either
