If Dream was given the BIGGEST. LARGEST. benefit of a doubt of all time, then the truth is:
He isn’t careful with his words or actions.
He CANNOT fathom the consequences of his carelessness.
He can’t be bothered to consider the responsibility of his position before making decisions that inadvertently hurt other people because his fanbase is large, has negative actors, and speak on his behalf. DESPITE whatever he actually intended.
This leads to speculation from those outside of his fan base on his intention, insight to his unconscious motives and exposes his ignorance.
He is impulsive (in his words), prideful, and entitled. It prevents him from understanding the above points.
He is somewhat narrowminded and shortsighted when having to deal with said consequences.
It alludes him why certain topics need to be treated with the seriousness and severity it deserves.
It immensely upsets him that he cannot control his image to the wider public.
For some reason he cannot see that context doesn’t matter as much as the impact does. He focuses SO MUCH on explaining WHY something happened instead of acknowledging YES, it happened. He downplays those consequences in order to emphasize his “rationality”.
Perhaps creators should be taught how to handle an audience before being thrusted into having a sphere of influence.
As Tubbo said, being sexist/racist/etc is technically subjective. I do believe Dream isn’t purposefully racist, sexist, homophobic etc. That is my BOD for him. That’s what he believes for himself also. This is NOT, HOWEVER, how his words and actions come off. It can be interpreted as sexist, racist, transphobic, sinophobic etc to the wider audience. Not to mention the manipulative tactics and weaponized incompetence. He doesn’t realize this, which is why he’s so confused and trying so hard to control the perception of himself.

One thing I think people forget is that sans probably wouldn’t talk about missing his home and never being able to go back and giving up unless he absolutely felt he had to
with frisk he’s pretty sure that’s the time traveler that could very well end the entire world. He’s trying to reason with em as a someone he’s hoping could be a friend at that point because he’d really rather not have that happen

yeah agreed, sans goes out of his way to not talk to/with papyrus about their life before the underground. remember the newsletter q&a? (this is more a theory, but judging from their behavior i personally think papyrus is an amnesiac/sans thinks he is, and he's trying to spare him the grief of remembering).
his memories and mementos are stored behind his house for a reason, he's had his realization that he'll never go back already: there's no sense in reopening that wound again if he has an option to avoid the topic.

And he wants everything.#xxc leaves song lan thinking its the best course of action to atone but my god. No it wasn't. Poor communication crown actually goes to xxc#but it's what xxc he feels he deserves - continued sacrifice to atone. He wants to want nothing.#both are very stuck in the past in ways that are not actually accounting for their actions#It's easy to look at xue yang and go 'dang you need to get over your childhood trauma'#but that very much ignores that fact that we - real human beings - define so much by our childhood pains.#Growth is having to come to terms with it and trying to move past it...and not everyone is ready for that.#I have a lot of thoughts on that matter but I'll let it be for now.#Anyways. i'm sure it's been said somewhere before but thinking very hard about "no man, however great, can know his destiny. like everyone he must live and learn, and so it must be for the young warlock.." like. the very first line of the entire series. explicitly said by kilgarrah to apply to merlin as well. and yet kilgarrah tried otherwise. he told merlin up front what his destiny was and tried to push him away from living through the bad things whenever possible.
and it feels like kilgarrah reflecting on everything after the fact because he thought he could change it!! he thought maybe by telling him the good stuff it could be happy this time. maybe merlin could become the greatest warlock and help arthur become a great leader and fulfil all of those prophecies and make all those great things happen but also he could kill mordred and destroy morgana and erase all his enemies and still be that great person.
except he couldn't, of course. and by telling him and trying to control the narrative kilgarrah sealed his fate; destiny doesn't allow for choices. it just doesn't work like that, and they all learned, and kilgarrah lived and learned and is left simply with that lesson: that no one can know their destiny.
