Drabble Prompt #161: “Tell me a lie.” - “I love you.” JUST BREAK MY FUCKING HEART, WHY DON'T YOU? (Oh man, Heli, PLEASE make it hurt. I need a big, big oof 😭)

What year is it? Where are you? What’s my name?

It’s dark the first time he asks you these questions. The two of you smothered by the filth of a collapsed building, blood dripping from a split on his forehead into your mouth.

2023. In … where the fuck are we, Buck?

He wipes the blood from your nose-bridge and it smears it further up into your hairline. You’re fine, you assure him, but a large welt is forming from where your skull cracked under the falling ceiling. And then suddenly, in the soot grey silence of dust, stars blossom over Bucky’s face and he spins into a million fractures.

The room returns in a rocking motion of planetary misalignment— a roar of primordial birth. Grey, still, but rushing in like a storm.

Your head turns to the side to find Bucky and Steve peering down at you. Their voices are fading away as you waggle a finger. You guys okay?

Bucky chokes on a desperate laugh and catches himself against the jet’s wall. Steve kneels and brushes a tear from your cheek. His fists are clenched tight and before you go you hear him spit a long and vengeful string of curses.

The trauma lingers and your brain is sending out Morse codes of electrical activity, disrupting its natural frequency. You seize intermittently— at least three times on the hospital bed.

The nurses are slower than he is, so when Bucky gets there first, he follows their protocol and checks you with that annoyingly mundane prodding.

What year is it? Where are we?

You gurgle and flip him off. 2023. Med bay, goddamn it— anymore dumb questions?

He laughs. Why are you such a pain?

You have a question for him in reply. Where’s Steve?

It’s immediate, the way Bucky frowns a miserable crescent moon that hangs low on his face. He’s back in the field, finding the fucker who blew the room out.

Your cracked lips seal themselves shut, the grimace speaking louder than words ever could.

You and he know better than most how Steve changed after the Accords, tuning himself out to every feeling except for the one that keeps him fighting. Bucky knows that when you gaze into some unknown distance, you’re thinking about how your Hercules has transformed into Ares. Gold tarnished into red, blooming blood.

The stars above the compound snuff themselves out by sunrise and Bucky jerks awake with Friday alerting him to your bedroom. It’s midnight again and his bare feet slap against the floor all the way in. Time is a circle now, being asleep and awake feel one and the same, saturated with worry.

His hands are shaking when you lurch back to life.

What’s m—

You shudder, sh-shut the fuck up with that.

A sharp breath escapes his trembling mouth. I was going to ask, what’s my favorite color.

The same noise falls out of yours. Trick question, dumbass. Black isn’t a color; it’s a shade.

He stays on the floor for the rest of the night, and after the sun climbs across and makes its way back to the other side of the sky, he comes back and does it again.

In the dark, your sighs become ocean waves. Your hands gripping the sheets of the empty bedside sound like footprints in the sand. Bucky listens, half-asleep, to your whimpering like a slow siren call pulling him into the deep.

The interrogations come more frequently, because the doctor told him you might be experiencing other side effects from the injury. Someone needs to be there, to watch you, just in case. So, he asks you throughout the day all sorts of idiotic things. Mostly because of fear, sometimes because he’s secretly eager to see you smile.

He hasn’t seen a lot of that after the Accords. After Ares, he supposes.

What’s my birthday?

March tenth.

His brows raise in surprise— I wasn’t expecting that.

Where’s Steve?

You catch him off guard. He’s supposed to do the asking. The tile floor of the kitchen holds your tears on a Wednesday morning while your fingers scratch at the smooth surface, securing yourself in the moment.

I don’t know… haven’t heard since last Tuesday.

Your nostrils flare and Bucky wipes the corner of your eye. He tries to lighten the mood, tugging out a memory of an older day when you were the life of the party. Tell me a joke.

You stare into the fluorescent light hanging over his dark head. The shadow obscures his cheeks as he looks on. Your mouth is detached even as the silly question slips out. What is Beethoven’s favorite fruit?

Then, the end of Friday pitches you over in the middle of a shower. The caddy of shampoo and conditioner flies off its perch and scatters with a bang the same time your knees hit porcelain. Water rushes into your mouth and nose but you can’t feel it.

Bucky rips down the door, yanks the entire curtain off furiously and you, slippery with suds, into his lap. His one hand clears away the broken soap dish, the other turning your head to the side.

Come on! Come on, come on. Come back. Come back.

Three minutes feels like an eternity.

Your gasps finally wane, and you look up at him from your place on his thigh, leaned back on his palms, breathing hard as if he’s the one who fell. He reaches over for a towel, drapes it on top of your body and pretends like he hadn’t seen anything.

Who won the game last night? Bucky grunts. You blink spots from your vision, hand reaching up to find his face, to make sure he’s there.

S-sportball? C’mon, Buck. Like I fucking kn—

A long-suffering sigh. His heart feels like it’s about to jump out of his chest, and here you are, being a complete pain in his lap. He tries a different approach.

Who makes the best lasagna? Never mind– I know it’s me. His brain is discharging rapid-fire questions, trying to forget the shape of your body beneath the cotton sheet. What’s your third favorite animal? Who sings that song you like? Tell me about your ma. Tell me a story. Tell me a lie.

You laugh then. The one he’s been waiting for. The first one all week— all month, since your head cracked open. Since Steve left you for vengeance. It’s a clipped sound, not really a laugh, but he takes it eagerly with a fluttering in his chest.

I love you.

Bucky’s thundering heart stills as your head moves from its sideways position on his leg. Instead of his thigh cradling your cheek, his lap cradles the back of your skull. Beneath him, you peer, lips parted at the beginning of a sentence. He beats you there.

What? Why would you—

A lie, right?

Bucky nods stiffly. Misses the way you stare at the point of his chin when he tilts back. You’re a pain, you know that? Guess that’s how I know your brain isn’t knocked loose yet.

Friday dings tepidly, alerting the both of you to an arrival and soon enough, heavy and determined steps are echoing down the hallway. Stiff footfalls, commanding gait.

Steve. Ares.

You should head back to your room. He always wants to see you first.

A little hum sizzles from your throat as you pick yourself up, letting Bucky steady you with his arm. Not always.

It gives Bucky pause as he gathers the jagged ceramic bits and soap bottles scattered on the floor. Your voice is small and reluctant when you call his name. Bucky?

Yeah…?

The look you give him from the doorway half splits your mouth open, showing your teeth. When was the last time you gave him a real smile? Bucky’s brow furrows at the restrained moment pulling itself apart, lasting an eternity.

Your turn, Buck. Tell me a good one. Tell me a lie.

Infinity lingers. Steve’s steps are frozen in time, endless like the three minutes you seized in his lap tonight as he searches your eyes for an answer to the unasked question. It hovers and breathes down his back. It’s a secret. A fib. An admission wrapped neatly inside the pretense of a shared game.

He smirks and hopes the splintering in his heart doesn’t show on his face.

I love you.

White: Wait, only me? Wasn’t Asher going to be on for this scene?

Mod!: “No, change of plans! Sorry, Asher, but your going to have to hang a little more with Sparkie.”

Asher: I’m fine with that.~ good luck, out there, White! See ya’ll later!~

White: Okay then... I’m ready...

*Mod! raises a clap board that reads:

Asher The Fox Saga: “The Escape...”

Scene 2

Roll 12

Take 1

Main Actor: Ghost!White

They slap the board calling for action!*

*Ghost!White stands in line, now in their human form... She looks pretty uncomfortable... She was now nearing the gate... She can now see a strange being standing by the gate... it didn’t seem to hold any particular form, their body quivering and forming into a similar shap of what stood in front of it...*

Gatekeeper: Next...

*the voice was soft and rather gentle... White steps forward and instantly the being shifts to look like a human fox! They looked somewhat similar to Asher, but the color of their hair, ears, and tail, was more of a dark and light blue scheme... and their irises were golden rings staring right at White as she approached... White looks rather intimidated...*

Gatekeeper: ... What’s your name?

Ghost!White: White... C-can you tell me-

Gatekeeper: ah, yes...

*The being’s form wagered as they close their golden eyes...*

Gatekeeper: You were a really good mother... went after your own kit, I see... and sacrificed yourself for others. However...

*They open their eyes and they glow dark purple... Just like how White’s eyes were when she had been taken over by the demon and became an exe...*

Gatekeeper: You made a deal with the devil...

Ghost!White: I... I just want to get back to my kit... I don’t want to stay here...

*The chattering from the different animals and people that were in the line behind her suddenly cut off as though everyone had heard what she just said... The gatekeeper’s form wavered and their eyes contrast into a color of blood red as it took a threatening step forward... a growl comes out from it and the tone and pitch of their voice changes...*

Gatekeeper: Get. out. of the line, White!...

*White backs up in horror not believing the familiar voice she had just heard... The gatekeeper had sounded just like Asher! White backpeddles into another being that had been behind her, a majestic stallion that also looked down threateningly at White... in one swift movement the stallion had grabbed White by the nape of the shirt she was wearing and tossed her to the side! White tumbles heads over tails before landing near the fence next to the gates, now back in her fox form... She looks up as the chatter in the line starts back up again as though nothing had happened...*

Lost soul: grrr...

*White slowly turns to see one of the grotesque figures that had been trying to claw in through the fence... it held part of the shape of a human! If reached out towards her making her snap up and onto her feet! Before she knows it, she’s running... away from the gate and past the line of dead souls... She runs for a while before slowing down to a stop... She looks back to where she had come from, but blinked surprised... The gate and line of creatures were gone... She was back to where she had started when she first woke up... White lets out a shaky breath and sits down looking terrified... It takes her a while to look up and around her sadly, tears spilling from her eyes...*

Ghost!White: ... I’m sorry, Asher... I don’t think... I’m alive anymore... and... I don’t think I can come back to you...

*she lays down exhausted as she hears what sounds like thunder rumbling below her... The lighting around her slowly dims to a dull grey color...*

okay, so, the bella sara tarot deck. below the cut because it’s a LONG post.

My process: I decided to limit this to cards I physically own, even though all the newer cards do seem to be archived pretty well on the wiki, because I think shuffling and touching the cards is an important tarot aspect, and I wanted the deck to be functional. Not counting item cards and shiny variations, there are a total of 90 unique cards in the first and second series, the only ones I ever purchased, and luckily I have all 90!

Since there are 78 cards in a tarot deck, I had to pick out 12 to discard. I settled on several non horses (artemis the zebra, pedro the donkey, dino the dinosaur, kio the lion, treasure the seahorse, wavebreaker the dolphin), three foals (bellisimo, beauty, spottie), cajus for including a merman in the artwork, friends for featuring two horses and only one name, and dynamo because i simply felt the art style wasn’t very realistic and didn’t fit in with the rest of the deck.

From there I divided the remaining cards up by their “symbol” at the top. conveniently, there are four suits! I decided the heart best fit with the cups, the flower with wands, the moon with pentacles, and the horseshoe with the sword. Great. Then I dug through every pile and pulled cards I thought best fit each major arcana card, while keeping 14 of each suit to represent the minor arcana.

For the unfamiliar, bella sara cards feature a horse portrait, but also a little message of positivity. A little horse motto. It’s a strange franchise but 2007 was a weird time for all of us. I mainly used the messages to sort these horses, but aesthetics and name played a small role. I used this site’s description of each major arcana card to help because I don’t know that much about tarot tbh. all images from the bella sara wiki.

The Fool - Luna - “A wonderful and exciting world awaits you.” a few other cards mention having the heart of a child or seeing the world as a child, but this one really expresses the beginning of a journey, the openness to the world that the fool offers, if slightly more uplifting because. well. it’s bella sara.

The Magician - Tao - “The whole world is at your feet.” i was kind of hoping for a card that was more about being unique. but the magician also represents having what you need to accomplish your goals and should set forth. world’s your oyster. at your feet.

The High Priestess - Santos - “Be mindful of your senses and your intuition.” was slightly wary of assigning a stallion to this role but gender is dead and the high priestess is all about intuition

The Empress - Honey - “Create something beautiful. It will make you feel peaceful.” my first instinct was to make the titular bella the empress. But honey’s message about beauty, and her portrait surrounded by nature, won out.

The Emperor - Cantaro - “Develop your ability to lead. Ask a wise person for advice.” This card specifically mentions leadership and wisdom, a relatively easy pick.

The Hierophant - Angel - “Angel is coming. Make space and let heaven help you.” another pretty easy one, very few cards mention heaven or spirituality.

The Lovers - Yin & Yang - “You always have a choice.” i considered discarding these two early on, but felt the message was too tarot-relevant to discard, and they fit very well here. the only card in our deck with two horses who aren’t a mare and foal, reminding you of choices.

The Chariot - Tai - “Be resolute and energetic in what you do.” wavered on this one for a while but I think resolve and energy are related to determination and drive enough for this to work.

Strength - Thunder - “I give you courage. Now you can release your fears.” this is one where the portrait was pretty relevant - a few cards mention courage but this one is the most forceful and strong about it.

The Hermit - Mushu - “Find a peaceful place where you can gather new energy.” big hermit card energy, back away from it all and recharge

The Wheel of Fortune - Eagle - “See the world from above like an eagle.” fuck this card in particular. took me ages to find something that kind of matches, and even then it’s a stretch. the only real match here is that the wheel of fortune urges perspective, and so does this eagle colored horse.

Justice - Grey - “If you really want it, it will come to you.” this was a tough one too. The vaguely karmic aspect is appealing to pair this one with justice, but it’s still not the best match in the deck. i’m trying my best.

The Hanged Man - Yasmin - “Retreat and gather new energy for taking steps on the road.” the hanged man is about cutting your losses, sacrificing something small to move forward, and letting go of what’s not working. retreat seems like a good fit.

Death - Chung - “Let go of pain and sorrow. The road will open and everything will go right.” assigning a horse trading card to death was not a task i thought i would face. but i kinda vibe with this pick - death is about endings and new beginnings, so it’s important to move past your pain and onto new roads. also, traditionally, death rides a white horse.

Temperence - Peace - “Those who don’t think of winning or losing have peace in mind.” kind of a weird one, hard to find a good match, but I think this patient, peaceful war horse fits.

The Devil - Parlez - “Make a plan and commit completely to it.” crazy enough there really aren’t any uhhhhhh demonic horses in this children’s trading card series from ‘07. went with the interpretation that what traps you is your own unwillingness to move forward. also there is a skull on this horse’s forehead. kinda metal?

The Tower - Macon - “It is wise to accept that there are things you can’t do.” this card is one of very few that isn’t relentlessly positive and instead encourages you to accept failure. Let that tower, or stable i guess, crumble.

The Star - Star - “It is not what you do but who you are that is important.” i simply had to. nice healing message.

The Moon - Sheng - “Understand the past. Hold onto the great things and move forward alone.” the description for this bad boy mentions not allowing worry to cloud your past or future, and this horse is all about parsing your past to move clear-headed towards the future. nice moon colored palette.

The Sun - Bella - “Think positive every day! Feel the bliss of joy and energy that comes with it.” here she is, the figurehead of our series, the queen of happiness, joy, optimism, energy... our sun.

Judgement - Starfighter - “Believe in your vision and make it come true.” this was another tough match, i had to focus on the “you can change yourself and your future” aspect of judgement to make any of them fit, and this was my fave card that mentions vision.

The World - Sunny - “The wind blows. The sun is shining. Surround yourself with positive friends.” it’s not my favorite match, but it does have a certain element of being in the right place in the world, with a sense of completion.

Okay! so that’s the major arcana. For the minor arcana, while i did put the cards within each deck into an order I thought fit the ace through king, I was far less particular than with our major deck. Went with vague associations instead of real connection to each card. I’m also not gonna list out all my reasons, because while I may be an insane person, I’m not quite ready to dedicate that much time to this weird, niche late night project. Pictured below is the ace of each deck.

Suit of Wands/Flowers:

Ace - Shaman - “You are more powerful than you realize. It is safe and good for you to be powerful.”

Two - Feng - “This moment is full of opportunities.”

Three - Nanna - “Think positively. Your happy thoughts will grow.”

Four - Walter - “I love your company. Let’s have a good time together.”

Five - Shakira - “Goodness and generosity create loving energy.”

Six - Yung - “Don’t be afraid. Show who you are.”

Seven - Tiffi - “Paradise is a state of mind.”

Eight - Bosi - “Use all your abilities to make this a beautiful place.”

Nine - Jewel - “I will help you stay in a steady flow of abundance.”

Ten - Flipper - “I will embrace you with extra energy and magic. Then you don’t have to be afraid.”

Page - Pink Lady - “I am the spirit of your inner child. Be joyful and see the world as a magical place.”

Knight - Sarah - “Take a chance and follow your heart.”

Queen - Misla - “With me you will be safe and protected by heaven.”

King - Halloween - “I will keep you safe.”

despite the insane time investment this took, i really enjoyed looking at all the messages and comparing them to tarot meanings. maybe i’ll actually do some kind of reading with it sometime! i don’t know a lot about tarot but i think it’s really cool and the concept of using silly horse trading cards to divine my future delights me.

The rain is hitting the metal roof of the building and the sound of the rain is buzzing background noise. The TV is on but the volume is down. You all are focused on your own activities, You are reading a book, Hoseok is watching youtube videos on his phone sitting on the ground ,while Jimin play’s Candycrush saga on his own phone and Jin is talking quietly on his phone. A sound of thunder disturbs your peace and the lights goes out while Hoseok seems little troubled. “Great.” Jimin sighs and gets up from the couch. “I will go look for a flashlight and maybe some candles.” Jimin uses his phone as a light when he exist the room. You put your book on your lap useless now and glance towards Jin whose voice has gotten louder further the call has proceed. “What do you mean that you can’t make it? You can’t bail on me on last minute… No, I know but how I’m supposed to manage with so low staff? Okay, fine and goodbye.” Jin hangs the call and frustrated sigh leaves his lips. Jin looks really stressed heavy bags are formed under his eyes and veins are clearly visible underneath them. Jin is wearing loose brown sweater and pair of black slacks. “What’s wrong?” You ask worriedly and even Hoseok glances Jin from his phone. Hoseok is wearing tight white t-shirt, red lumberjack shirt tied on his waist and pair of worn black jeans. “A volunteer cancelled her sift on my clinic on last minute. It is bad already with current flu season, two nurses are of and another veterinarian got flu yesterday.” Jin tells and rubs his temple.

Jimin arrives the room lap full of candles and lighter on his hand. ’‘I couldn’t find the dammed flashlight, Jungkook must have it put somewhere else after his recent camping trip.“ Jimin sighs and puts the pile on the living room table, he takes one of the candles and lights it up with the lighter on his hand. His face is illuminated with the shadows created by the flame and for a second he looks like a ghost. The soft light of the candles lights up the room when Jimin moves around the room placing the candles and lighting them up. Jimin is wearing loose pair of baggy jeans with grey long sleeved shirt. Another sound of lighting enters the room and you can see a flash between the living room curtains. ’'I hate thunder.” Hoseok whines. “When I was a kid i used to hide under my bed every time storm came. You enter small hallway with several doors and stop in front of one where reads Kim Seokjin senior veterinarian. Next to him is door with a name of the other veterinarian who works with Jin. You knock Jin’s door and soon hurried steps arrives the door. When Jin sees you he smiles widely. “Hi, I’m clad you made it” He tells and comes in the hallway closing the door behind him. Best Marvel Comics to Binge Read on Marvel Unlimited

With an enormous swath of the world involved in varying degrees of social distancing, many of us suddenly find ourselves with a lot of time on our hands. Never fear! There are more options for streaming comics than ever before, and that means we have access to more of comics history, more hidden gems, and more epochal runs than ever before. But the variety of options to read can be daunting. That’s why we’ve put together a recommendation list of some of our favorite comics binge reads to help you through quarantine. Marvel Unlimited has been around for more than a decade. It runs about six months behind print release of books, so it’s a good way to stay sorta-current with the stories you love. But the real draw is the back catalog: with 25,000 issues in its library, you’ve got access to some of the most important and most entertaining runs of superhero books of all time. From Lee and Kirby creating the modern superhero comic in the pages of Fantastic Four through Chris Claremont and John Byrne revolutionizing the X-Men, and through several Wars (Secret, Infinity, or Civil), everything is here.

You don’t need us to tell you to read some of these stories. You know “The Dark Phoenix Saga,” Kraven’s Last Hunt, “Demon in a Bottle,” or Jonathan Hickman’s behemoth are all important and good. And some of them, Marvel’s even giving you for free. We’re going to skip over some of the obvious ones and point you towards hidden gems, the harder to find stories that fill in the edges of the Marvel Universe and make it such a rich, lush experience. We are also looking for monster runs that will keep you occupied – you can read six issues in one sitting with no danger of nearing the end. Some of these might take you an entire round of social distancing to finish.

A quick note about the reading guides: We’ll list out the issue numbers for most of these. Many of them may have their own separate entry under Marvel Unlimited’s reading lists – those are helpful, but these are definitive. One of them, we’re going to refer you to the events – to find those, you can go to “Browse”, then scroll over to “Comic Events.” And for one of these, we’re linking to the inordinately helpful Comic Book Herald. They’re a great site for comic reading orders in general, and have helped me through several other binge reads before.

This probably shouldn’t be on the list. It is in the conversation for the greatest runs on any superhero comic ever. But if you’ve never read it, you’re truly missing out.

If you watched Thor: Ragnarok and loved how it looked or any of its story, chances are you are going to adore this, the run that Ragnarok borrowed so much from. Walter Simonson took the Asgard realized by Jack Kirby, the mythological realm pumped full of color and Kirby dots, and turned everything way up to create the most iconic Thor run of all time. Simonson started the run on art before handing off to Sal Buscema, and Simonson and Buscema are two of the artists I could recognize by style the soonest. Everything is HUGE.

This run made so many characters wonderful, but Loki, Volstagg, and Beta Ray Bill are highlights. And have I mentioned the art? It’s incredible, and doesn’t suffer one bit when Buscema takes over. This is my favorite run on any comic of all time. You absolutely must read it.

X-Men: the Messiah Cycle

The hottest take you’re going to find on the internet today is this: the Messiah Cycle is the best era of X-Men comics. It has everything I want from the X-Men line: books have distinct voices and missions, but contribute to the overarching direction of the line. There IS an overarching direction to the line. New characters are brought to the front, and new ideas are injected into the line.

You get all of that from the Messiah era. Messiah CompleX picks up with Cerebro identifying the first mutant birth in years; Messiah War has the members of the Mutants with Claws and Swords era X-Force heading to the future to check up on that baby; Second Coming is when she returns to present day. Each one has a different tone; Messiah CompleX and Second Coming bring together every book in the line to tell their stories, but also let each creative team keep telling their stories and end up being the best-handled X-crossovers since Inferno. And Second Coming is the best straight action X-book I think I’ve ever read.

If you like these crossovers, you should absolutely check out other books from this era. Utopia X, a crossover between Uncanny X-Men and Dark Avengers, is amazing, as is Duane Swierczynski and Ariel Olivetti’s Cable and Zeb Wells’ New Mutants.

Mark Gruenwald’s Captain America

Full confession: this is my current binge read. After years of hearing about how wonderful Gruenwald’s Cap was, I finally decided to jump in and within three issues, I was texting people to scream at them for not forcing me to read it sooner. For starters, the goddamn Serpent Society turns into a union. In fact, the Serpent Society’s union meeting is the most fun I’ve had reading a comic scene in a while, and the fact that it is based on a real meeting of comic book creators from 1978 makes it both more accurate sounding and HILARIOUS (I think Constrictor is Gil Kane, when you read it).

But the real appeal is how much movie Cap is based on this era. Gruenwald’s Steve Rogers is a really nice guy. Everybody loves him, everyone respects him, and there’s not a lick of condescension or mean spiritedness about anything he does, from sparring with Black Knight to taking on a gang of criminal jugglers with Hawkeye to trying to help joke villains like Rocket Racer. He’s also extremely competent, and Gruenwald and artist Paul Neary do an incredible job of showing this, as Cap breaks into the West Coast Avengers’ headquarters while trying to figure out, through his jet lagged brain, what day it is. It only gets bigger and more traditionally superhero as it goes on, with artistic contributions from the likes of Kieron Dwyer, Ron Lim, and others.

You’ll see even more of this run’s influence in Marvel’s The Falcon and The Winter Soldier TV series on Disney+, as it introduces key characters who we’ll see on screen there, so get reading, and pay attention!

Runaways

Runaways (2017) #1-current

Rainbow Rowell’s current run as writer on Runaways captures the Marvel spirit better than just about any comic coming out right now. It’s a masterful mix of superheroics, joyful immersion in Marvel continuity, and soapy teenage drama. A lot of people are doing good work at Marvel right now, but nobody is hitting these notes as consistently well as this crew.

This book is remarkably accessible for something so steeped in its own history. If you’re new to comics, or if you’re here because of the Hulu show, you’ll find plenty to love. But if you liked the original series from Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona, you’re going to be shocked at how much this feels like if that same book had never ended. Even though the characters have grown and changed substantially, their voices are distinct and seamless. This is one of my favorite Marvel comics being published right now, and once you’re all caught up, make sure you add it to your pull list at your shop.

Remember that moment in Rogue One where Vader just kicked the shit out of everyone without looking like he was trying? If you were reading the comics at the time, that moment had already happened for you a full 18 months before the movie came out, in Darth Vader #6.

Star Wars: Darth Vader’s Best Moments from the Marvel Comics

This entire series is Vader killing everything he can. It’s like watching a space tornado. What’s especially surprising, though, is how Kieron Gillen manages to sneak some important character development into the book. While Vader slices through Sith intrigue and Rebel scum and the entire royal line of a mining planet and a bunch of others, we’re also learning about why he’s the way he is. This series takes place between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, so some of the lines that get filled in add to the rest of the OT as well. There have been several very good Star Wars comics since Marvel got the license back, but this run on Darth Vader is the best.

Ultimate Spider-Man

Ultimate Spider-Man saved Marvel Comics. Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley didn’t do it with flashy variants or crossovers. They did it by telling good, pure, core Spidey stories.

It’s hard to separate Peter’s origin from Ultimate Spider-Man from Peter’s origin in the 616. The Ultimate origin is so definitive and iconic in how it fills in the spaces between the necessary beats. Bagley’s art especially – even now, thinking about this series that I haven’t read in forever, I can still pull up Peter jumping over Norman’s car, or MJ’s face when she and Peter have “the talk.”

For the absolute best, and purest this book can be, just read the first 38 issues, ending with the first Venom arc, but the book stays solid for its entire run. Bendis’ work with both Peter Parker and Miles Morales is my favorite work of his career, especially when Miles joins the cape world, but nothing will ever match just how fantastic these first few arcs of Ultimate Spider-Man are.

The Annihilation Era

You will be hard pressed to find better comic book space opera than the Abnett/Lanning era of Marvel’s cosmic characters. Marvel’s cosmic line was an afterthought when these first started coming out. By the end, it was a widely beloved corner of the Marvel Universe that was popular enough to be mostly transcribed whole by the movies.

Guardians of the Galaxy Reading Order

The nice thing about this era of the cosmic line is how neatly the main books move from event to event. Annihilation tells the story of a cataclysm that befalls the universe, and how the remaining heroes – Nova, Star Lord, Silver Surfer, Drax, Gamora, Ronan the Accuser, and Super-Skrull, among others – fight a war to survive. Rich Rider gets his own solo Nova comic from there, and it leads right into Annihilation: Conquest, about the catastrophe that follows in Annihilation’s wake. It also sees the formation of the Guardians of the Galaxy as we know them and launches their book, before tying both comics together in War of Kings where the Shi’ar and Kree empires collide. Realm of Kings is the aftermath of that war (and has one of my favorite Shi’ar Imperial Guard stories of all time), and that leads directly into the conflict that mostly closes out the era, The Thanos Imperative. This is a great introduction and immersion in Marvel’s cosmic universe, and will have you hooked by the halfway point of the first crossover.

Black Panther

Black Panther (1998) #1-22, Deadpool (1997) #44, Black Panther #23-62

There are certainly better parts to this run, but there is a scene where Namor, T’Challa, Doctor Doom, and Magneto stand around an apartment outside of the United Nations shouting at each other about diplomacy, and to this day I still have not found a comic book more specifically designed for my interests than this one.

Best Black Panther Comics: An Essential Reading Guide

Priest is one of the sharpest minds ever to write comics. He’s so good at misdirection and storytelling – he will overwhelm you with style and flash, and you won’t even notice the subtle clues he’s dropping, or the way themes and characters weave together to show key parts of the story. This run on Black Panther is probably the definitive one for the character, and contributed a ton to the movie version, but there’s so much more depth (and humor!) that Priest puts into the Marvel Universe that it’s very worth reading.

Incredible Hercules spun out of World War Hulk and came out better than it had any business being.

Hercules exists in a unique place. Pak and Van Lente used him as a gateway to the mythology of the Marvel Universe – the Greek pantheon, but also the Norse pantheon, Japanese gods, Inuit gods, even Skrull deities. And several of these aren’t exclusive to Marvel, so you get a very clear and obvious statement about some of the differences between the Big 2 universes, some clever in-jokes, and the requisite moving story about godhood. This all comes with wonderful characterization, clever plotting and a great sense of humor.

Nextwave: Agents of H.a.T.E.

Read Nextwave after you’ve read everything else, not because it’s a good capstone to your Marvel experience, but because it’s aggressively anti-continuity, and (lovingly) EXTREMELY disrespectful of the rest of the Marvel Universe. It’s also one of the funniest comics Marvel’s ever put out.

This whole story is Warren Ellis brutalizing superheroes. Boom Boom from X-Force, Monica Rambeau (sometimes Captain Marvel, sometimes Photon), Machine Man, monster hunter Elsa Bloodstone, and Captain &#($$&*#!@ (or The Captain) are brought together by the Highest Anti-Terrorism Effort (H.A.T.E.) to fight Unusual Weapons of Mass Destruction. It’s aggressive nonsense, less anti-continuity than acontinuitous which isn’t a word but also fits the spirit of the book – characters make no sense even from issue to issue, and only serve the plot, but that nonsense later serves the plot. And it is an absolute tour de force from Stuart Immonen, who draws every type of comedy you can imagine – slapstick, absurdity, somehow sarcasm, puns – with incredible layouts and storytelling. This is not a good Marvel comic, but it is an incredible comic book that you’re going to love.
