My OCs
TW: towards the end there are mentions of a lesbian being outed, homophobia, murder, kidnapping, child experimentation, and trauma.
So, for a while I've had a group of OCs that are, like my main characters. Not just one or two either. Basically what I'm posting here is the bases for my OCs. So, whenever I go to write a story with them, i start with this and then change their personalities and backstories as needed. I figured I could put that basic information here and ask the tumblrverse to send me questions and stuff about these characters. This is so I can deepen their characterisation. They're not limited to a high school setting. That's just so I have some frame of reference for a timeline for these characters. Some have more information than others, because some of these characters I've had longer.
Also, if any of you have read or do read my Girl meets World x OCs story, the Serena Willis and Mason Lane in that story will probably have different personalities to the Serena and Mason described here, because they're in the Girl Meets World universe.
You'll see most of them kinda revolve around each other. These characters weren't made for a specific story. They're almost placeholders. They just kinda exist in my head and jump into any scenario i need. So here is the most basic barebones information about each. It's not a lot of information.
Hayley Riley is a bisexual woman who has blonde hair, hazel eyes, and caramel-colored skin. She is confident, though cold, distant, and uncaring at times. She is playful and sarcastic around her friends and is a good listener who gives good advice. She is protective and the most likely to get into a physical fight, though her words can be just as hurtful. Hayley can be very guarded around people she doesn't know well. She is attracted to both men and women, with a preference for someone's personality over their appearance.
Teagan Jane (TJ) Smith is an energetic, outgoing, tomboyish girl who is playful and enjoys pranking people. She is protective of close friends, romantic partners, and family members. She is a lesbian and doesn't get along well with her homophobic mother, though she has a very good relationship with her dad. She is clumsy and has red hair and grey eyes.
Alice Michaelis is Teagan Jane Smith's (TJ's) best friend. The three have been friends since they were five years old. Alice is fairly quiet but confident, graceful, and loves reading, especially fantasy books. She is polite, friendly, and distant unless around her friends, family, or romantic partners, with whom she is more playful. She is smart, peaceful, sweet, and caring, and the least likely to physically fight someone, preferring to use her words. She is attracted to men and women. Alice has dark blue hair, light blue eyes, pale white skin, and a gothic, doll-like appearance.
Ryder is an emo who has been friends with Hayley, Alice, and TJ since middle school. He's very guarded, moody, and sarcastic towards most people, but can be slightly more open and playful with his close friends and twin brother, Oliver. He's protective of his friends and Oliver and is willing to fight, like Hayley. He's also the second most likely to fight in the group. Ryder is attracted to both men and women but doesn't engage in casual hookups or dating just for the sake of it. He has black hair, blue eyes, pale white skin, and an emo look and style.
Aiden has been friends with Hayley, TJ, and Alice since middle school. He is friendly, responsible, and the voice of reason in the group. Aiden is the peacekeeper, keeping the more chaotic members of the group from going too far. He is the best listener and the best at giving advice. He’s protective but less likely to physically fight than the rest of the group, except Alice. He prefers to deescalate conflict, both within the group and outside it, and is unlikely to be actively rude or mean on purpose. Aiden is smart, kind, and one of the more open and trusting members of the group. He has light brown hair and brown eyes. Aiden is also the most athletic and sporty member of the group.
Mason is the final member of the friend group of Hayley, TJ, Alice, Ryder, and Aiden. He joined the group last, moving to the small town they live in during their freshman year of high school (or equivalent age in non-high school settings). Mason is very energetic, outgoing, playful, and jokey. He is the biggest prankster of the group and often teams up with TJ to prank the others. Mason is the most rebellious member of the group but is not mean or rude. He is the most open and trusting member, friendly to anyone who isn’t actively being mean to him or his friends. Mason is the “golden retriever” friend—energetic, slightly forgetful, and airheaded but not completely dumb. He has green eyes and his hair is naturally dark brown, but he dyed it purple with Alice's help. Alice naturally has blonde hair, which she dyes dark blue.
Reece is the golden boy of the school, with blonde hair and blue eyes. He's very athletic and is the captain of the football team. He's also very smart and one of the top students in every class. Reece is rich and popular, known for his kindness and friendliness towards everyone. He's always willing to help others and is often tasked with showing new students around the school. He used to be friends with Hayley, TJ, Alice, Ryder, and Aiden in middle school but gradually stopped hanging out with them as much before high school. They are still civil with him, but he's no longer really part of their friend group. He briefly dated Hayley in middle school, but they mutually broke up, deciding they were better as friends. He currently dates the golden girl of their school, Everley.
Everley is the golden girl of the school, with blonde hair and green eyes. She's very athletic and the captain of the cheer squad. She's also very smart and one of the top students in her school. Everley is rich, popular, kind, and friendly. She's always willing to help and take on additional responsibilities. She was never a member of Hayley, Alice, TJ, Ryder, and Aiden's friend group. Everley is currently dating Reece.
Serena Willis is the best friend of Reece and Everley. She has black hair and blue eyes. She's rich, athletic, and smart, like Reece and Everley, but isn't as friendly or helpful. Serena can be mean, rude, and snobby at times. She is a closeted bisexual who pretends to be straight and is also fairly cunning. Serena used to be friends with Hayley, Alice, TJ, Ryder, and Aiden but gradually stopped talking to them, like Reece. Serena and Reece have been friends practically all their lives as their parents were also friends. Serena used to have a secret crush on Hayley in middle school but never told anyone. She is currently dating Jason McCall. Serena is the vice captain/co-captain of the cheer team when in a high school setting.
Ryder and Oliver are identical twins with a close brotherly relationship but have very different personalities and friend groups. While Oliver is polite and friendly towards Ryder's friends, Ryder is much more dismissive of Oliver's friends and doesn't really talk to them. When he does interact with them, Ryder treats them similarly to how he treats anyone who isn't Hayley, TJ, Alice, Aiden, Mason, Oliver, Serena, or Reece—sarcastic, moody, kind of rude, and generally uninterested in talking to them. Oliver has the same black hair, blue eyes, and pale white skin as Ryder, but his style is much less emo. Oliver is more open and friendly, outgoing, nice, and popular. He has a much cheery disposition compared to his moody brother. Oliver generally likes people and is not rude, mean, or moody. He can be playful but isn't really sarcastic. He's more likely to light-heartedly tease and joke than make witty remarks or sarcastic quips. Oliver is one of the nicer members of his own friend group, being the second nicest. Oliver is athletic and on the football team.
Jason McCall is the popular bad boy and heartbreaker/player of the school/town. He's very flirty, playful, and confident. Jason is also athletic and is on the football team. He is dating Serena and is friends with Oliver, Ryder's twin brother. He has a twin sister named Jasmine, who is also in his friend group. Jason has a rebellious streak and can be cruel at times. He is attracted to both men and women but only dates women, as he doesn't want anyone to know he likes both. He has dark brown hair, blue eyes, and is muscular and athletic looking.
Jasmine McCall is Jason's twin sister and is friends with Jason and Oliver. She's very much the popular, cool girl—cool, calm, and collected. Jasmine is friendly towards most people and can be a flirt, mostly with guys but occasionally with girls. She's a loyal and trustworthy friend and sister who jokes around a lot and can be sarcastic. Jasmine tends to hide her emotions unless she's around her friends. She is generally nice but can be a bit mean and manipulative when she feels threatened by or jealous of someone. Jasmine has dark brown hair and grey eyes. She is on the cheer team when in a high school setting, making her quite athletic.
Carson is friends with Jason, Jasmine, and Oliver. He's a flirt and a heartbreaker who doesn't care about his partner's gender and is unashamed about his heartbreaker ways. Carson is very confident, chill, and relaxed. He doesn't really care about anyone who isn't his family or friends but remains popular due to his charisma, charm, and humor. He's protective of his friends and is very playful and jokey around them. Carson is on the football team and has light brown hair and green eyes.
Carly and Melissa are friends with Jasmine, Jason, Oliver, and Carson. Carly and Melissa are also cousins.
Carly is an outgoing, bubbly, girly girl who loves hanging out with and meeting new people. She loves fashion, gossip, and makeup. Carly is very sweet and friendly, being the nicest member of the friend group. She is a massive social butterfly and has brown hair and brown eyes.
Melissa, her cousin, has black hair and green eyes. Melissa is not as girly as Carly and is the biggest rebel of their group, though she isn't really mean. She is sarcastic, playful, and sassy. Melissa is protective of her friends, especially Carly, and can be quite distant and cold toward those she doesn't know well.
Both Carly and Melissa are athletic, popular, and on the cheer team. They have a close relationship as cousins.
Yes, most of these characters are attracted to both, this is mostly for shipping purposes, so I can have them get with anyone.
Additional information:
I go back and forth on the reason, like whether it's just rich girl problems or more traumatic and it generally depends on the story, but Hayley's parents aren't really around a lot and her house is the one they usually have, like, sleepovers at her house and stuff.
In a supernatural world they are the following:
Hayley is a vampire witch hybrid (born a witch, turned into a vampire)
TJ is a demon
Alice is a fallen angel
Ryder and Oliver are vampires
Aiden is a werewolf.
Mason is a magic user (Witch/Wizard/Sorcerer, either way he was born with magic)
Jason and Jasmine are werewolves because Teen Wolf + McCalls = I now have to make the McCall twins werewolves.
Carly is a witch werewolf hybrid (mum's a witch, dad's a werewolf, born both)
Melissa is a witch vampire hybrid. (Mum is Carly's mum's sister and also a witch, dad is a vampire. In my suprenatural AU, Vampires can be either born or turned but it is hard for vampires to have children and so most vampires are turned, not born)
I haven't really decided what Carson, Serena, Everley and Reece are. Kinda like the idea of Serena being a siren or mermaid but, like, in a H2O just add water way, where they can walk on land but if it rains bam, mermaid tail, because that's comedy folks.
Everley, Reece and Carson I don't know. I kinda want them to be something I haven't mentioned here. I'll probably do some supernatural research to find something, maybe in the faefolk area for Everley and Reece? I don't know. I feel like i used to think of Carson as a werewolf vampire hybrid but i have enough werewolf and vampires so i think I'll change that after some research.
I tagged them with first and last names. Anyone not with a last name I haven't decided yet. I'm sure i did think if last names for all of them but I can't remember some of them.
Sometimes I make the fallout between Serena and the others messy with the backstory that Serena outed TJ as lesbian, which resulted in TJ's mom kicking her out and living with Hayley instead.
that's not always canon though
TJ does usually end up living with Hayley either way.
Hayley's parents (if they're alive) are cool with TJ living with them.
Whenever I think of them with superpowers, it's usually the Hayley crew as villains, and the double J squad (Jason and Jasmine) as heroes.
the Hayley crew were kidnapped and experimented on and trained. They eventually became more powerful than their captors and killed them to escape and were labelled as villains ever since
Oliver was at a friend's house or something when Ryder was kidnapped and thought he was dead
Hayley was five and watched her parents get murdered before she was taken
TJ was probably sold or given to the people experimenting.
Sometimes, my characters get to just live happily and be chaotic. Other times i give them serious trauma and then make them suffer.

I do feel like the way Kyoshi was written in the Avatar reboot was lowkey influenced by the fandom's perception of her. Cause like in the original show she's really just portrayed as a pragmatist who's willing to kill if necessary. Like Aang is conflicted about killing the Fire Lord and she's like "well if I were in your position I'd do it but that's just me. Good luck." And then people started making memes where she's like a murderous psychopath who thinks extreme violence is always the solution. And it was funny at first cause it was just exaggerating for comedy but now everyone thinks she was actually like that in the show when she really wasn't. And then in the remake her introductory scene is her angrily yelling at this 12 year old that he needs to stop being a little pussy and be a ruthless warrior or whatever and the only explanation I can think of is that someone in the writer's room maybe looked at a few too many of those memes.

I'm turning that Sanuso Modern AU (In which they meet because Zoro forgets to pay at the Baratie and Usopp and Waiter!Sanji end up flirting all night while they wait for him to come back with the money) into a whole fic called "The very first night" that will approximately have 9 chapters and it's actually about Sanji going on a quest trying to find Usopp again and failing miserably. Congratulations, y'all have convinced me to write a long fic when I usually write one-shots. Let's see how this turns out!

Lately I've only been wishing to grab a comic about my favorite character and just have a genuinely good time reading it.
#I can't remember the last time I took a Deadpool comic and genuinely had a good time about it#I hate the direction they took with his character and it's so disrespectful that I don't even talk about I don't even think *any* Deadpool#fan genuinely talk about it because were so tired of his kids characterization we all just collectively decided to ignore whatever hell#marvel through at him#but rant aside#it's just–#I am not sure if comic books are fun anymore I don't even know who I am making content for half of the people on my notes haven't touched#comic book and aren't pretending to do so#people who read the comics tend to be so mean or bitter about it that even if you follow most will be angry about something#comic or fan related and I don't know if I can blame them but following that is draining#and as much as I was trying to be a good sport about it you make a post about comic book characters and#and the overwhelming response is 'I don't read the comics but'– following up by a take about them that doesn't even recognize any core#aspect of their personality that you can't even grasp you can't even recognize them#you can't recognize them on tue cannon you can't recognize them on the fannon#and no matter how engaging you try to make content about the fandom people just–*refuse* to read it. And then– they *refuse* to tag fannon#content as fannon#and *refuse* to leave either#Yes we are all having fun but how can a character tag be so so filled with people who have no idea of who they are#how can a character can be properly loved and take care of and have content that respect them if no one makes any attempt to *know them*#and it's disheartening because *comics* are supposed to be fun *fannon are supposed to be fun*#but for aome reason it's really *really* hard to have fun here anymore#I created this page to share my love for the characters I care about and see more content of people who care about them too#but I can't even *find* people who care about them any more and when I do they're all so angry and upset– And I *cant even blame them*#I just... I don't know why I am doing this anymore or for who I am doing this anymore#sorry to vent but it's been a while since I haven't been had a genuinely good time™ enjoying comics#I don't think even people who write those comics enjoy those comics or care about those characters#Sometimes feels like everyone is projecting on those characters rather than *writing about them*. And I can't find them anymore#fanfics used to be about love petters to characters who you love#nowadays seems like a competition to see who makes more funny words with tropes pre-written since 2007#vent

The Warleggan Ball by flipperbrain-awakes
Ross leans against a wall in the large room and contemplates the tumbler of brandy in his hand. George does not skimp, this amber liquid is quite good. Ross is well acquainted with fine brandy, risking much himself to import the best available through less than legal means. He scans the room, it is between dances and most of the guests are clustered together in groups, engaged in flattery and idle conversation. He had quarreled with his wife an hour ago, he knew his surly attitude and lack of attention had angered Demelza, and he could certainly understand why. Yet at that moment he was incapable of bending, of admitting he was wrong. And rather than making it up with her, he continued playing cards. His grief and outrage over the disgusting treatment of his friend Jim Carter, which ultimately led to his untimely death, had rendered him powerless to rise above his mood. But by God, Demelza is the last person to deserve the sharp-edge of his ire, and now he feels incredibly ashamed at his behavior.
He watches his wife chatting merrily with several solicitous gentlemen across the ballroom, without a doubt she has many would-be suitors were her husband not standing in the way. She glances at him, her eyes still flashing with annoyance and hurt, she is ravishing and haughty and so very tempting. Demelza is wearing a new gown, its fabric selected particularly for this occasion. It is the color of Spring and covered with delicate leaves and stems. Her décolletage is framed with the tiniest diaphanous ruffle which projects the opposite of demure, rather than disguising, it accentuates her bust and she is fully aware of its effect.
Ross has had enough drink this night, he sets his glass aside and walks over to speak quietly with the leader of the small orchestra assembled in the southern corner of the room, a few coins are discreetly handed over. While likely the poorest of manners to divert the musical program toward his personal goals, he cares not and strides determinedly toward Demelza. She sees him coming and her brows gather in anticipation of protest but Ross does not give her an opportunity to refuse. He takes her by the hand and leads her to the center of the dance floor. Demelza initially resists his embrace, she is still put-out and a little embarrassed by their earlier exchange… but then she turns her head and looks into his eyes and her anger melts away, he can be damnable at times but his feelings for her are written on his face.
Ross takes her in his arms as the music strikes up and begins to dance a dance that he has only seen once before, he holds his beautiful wife, his hand sitting familiarly at her waist, and leads her in The Walse. The steps are not truly known to him but he believes he can manage a fair representation, he has some skill at dancing though rarely used. The onlookers at the time he first witnessed this exercise were scandalized by the closeness of its participants, and from the expressions on many a face, they are once again. He grins inwardly at this but Demelza’s visage, her fine features gazing up at him, he is nearly overcome with desire. She is his complete focus, the only thing in this world that truly matters. That he could act an idiot and lose sight of that, well, he is an imperfect man.
They are a vision to behold on the ballroom floor, Ross expertly guiding in his version of this dance, Demelza following his lead like a woman who has been trained in this since girlhood. Their bodies move together instinctually as one, gracefully drifting and turning and whirling together. All eyes are upon them, but theirs are only for each other.

MORE????? I'm on a roll
~
ColorKiller Angst
Characters (UTMV): Killer, Color, Nightmare
Word Count: 948
Trigger Warning: Character death, gaslighting, toxic NM
Summary: Killer had been meeting up with Color in "secret" for a while now. Nightmare decided that enough was enough.
~
For such a long time before, Killer had been sneaking out of Nightmare’s mansion to secretly meet up with Color. What they had together was beyond words and honestly beyond Killer’s comprehension, he just knew it was something. Something that he didn’t have with anyone else. Something he never wanted to have with anyone else.
It was thoughts like those that disturbed him.
Especially now.
He had never even known what he was feeling, but he only wanted to feel them for Color.
Unfortunately for him, Nightmare had grown tired of these “secret” meetings of theirs and decided he would put an end to them.
He had let Killer have his fun, but all good things must come to an end to make way for such delicious despair.
So now, in the Waterfall of a desolate AU that had been their chosen meeting spot, Nightmare stood above a kneeled Killer, a tentacle wrapped around his soul in a threatening manner.
Just off to the side was Color, who had been pushed out of the way when Nightmare made his appearance. He was struggling to get up in the face of the sheer amount of Negativity in the atmosphere, but kept trying to inch closer to Killer, to get him away from danger, to protect him at any cost necessary. His flames were burning a vibrant purple and orange.
“... don’t…” Killer rasped aloud, but to whom he was begging was unclear.
Was he telling Color not to bother with him? Was he telling him to run?
Or, was he begging Nightmare to leave Color alone? Was he pleading with him to spare the only life he held any value to?
“I’ve grown tired of your insolence, Killer. With you constantly sneaking out to meet with this walking rainbow, you’ve lost your true reason for living; your only purpose. You do remember what that is, hm?” Nightmare asked him, cocking his head and smirking down at the pitiful display before him.
Instead of answering him, like he knew he should have, Killer stayed silent and stared at the floor.
“Killer… you don’t have to listen to him. It’ll be fine, I promise.” Color said to him, hoping desperately to prevent a stage shift.
Killer looked up at him momentarily and his soul throbbed. What was he feeling right now? Why did it hurt so much?
Whatever it was, it made Nightmare’s smirk drop instantly and his tentacle coil just a bit tighter. Tight enough to make Killer curl over himself and let out small, very obviously repressed sounds of pain.
“Stop that!” Color yelled at him as he summoned an arm blaster and prepared to attack. However, before he could hardly charge it, a tentacle quickly wrapped its way around his arm and tightened significantly, severely breaking it.
In response, Color yelled out in pain and hunched over, cradling his arm, or what was left of it.
Killer’s eyesockets widened and he looked up at Nightmare with such a desperate look and pleaded, “Please stop! Please!”
Reveling in such potent Negativity from the two skeleton’s, Nightmare just laughed at him and shook his head in amusement.
“You know, I’m feeling rather generous right now, so I’ll give you a choice: Come back with me and leave Color behind, alive; or leave with him.”
Silence followed.
“Don’t do it Killer. Go with him. There’s some sort of trick here, I know it. Please, go with him. I’m begging you.” Color begged him, his eyelight shaking as he could feel in his gut that something was so very wrong here.
“Well?” Nightmare asked, seeming to taunt him even with a single word.
“... I choose to leave with him.” He said, glaring up at the one so clearly superior to him.
“Oh, how disappointing.” Was all that could be said before a tentacle pierced its way directly through Color’s soul.
There was hardly any sound as Killer was forced to watch the most important person to him turn to dust.
The tentacle unwound itself from Killer’s soul, leaving him to support himself, which he could not do, instantly falling further to the floor and letting out sounds he didn’t think he could make anymore.
These sounds were ones of true agony. The ones that only come when you’ve just lost something truly dear to yourself. The ones that come after you’ve lost the one person you’ve ever loved.
“You know, maybe if you’d chosen to go with me, this wouldn’t have happened.” A small sigh and click of his tongue, “Look what your choice did, Killer. Look what you’ve done.” Nightmare murmured to him, right beside his ‘ear’.
A heart-wrenching wail was the only response to be heard before Nightmare sighed once again, saying something about a mess, before leaving.
As Killer sobbed, he apologized and screamed for forgiveness to the point that his throat had grown raw and scratchy.
He stayed there for so long, crying and screaming for Color to come back, that he was so sorry, that he hated Nightmare for what he had done.
Nightmare showed no signs of coming back, but that made sense because that was what Killer had chosen. He chose for him and Color to leave, but it was never specified like in the first option that both would be alive.
Killer stayed there so long, hunched over and crying to no end that he hadn’t noticed that his soul didn’t look target-shaped anymore. It now looked like an upside-down heart.
He was in Stage 1 and he wasn’t able to go back.
He was stuck with this agony and he would have to live with it forever.
And Nightmare was just fine with that.

tolkien said sam was the chief hero of lord of the rings. also frodo wouldn't have made it out of the shire without him. sam carried frodo on his shoulders in mordor and fought shelob all alone.
tolkien said sam was the chief hero of lord of the rings.
He didn't, apparently. The chief hero quote is a heavily misquoted, perverted phrase LotR fandom has perpetuated without using any critical thinking because it serves their bias. The entire quote, within the context of the letter, means and says something else entirely.
Since we now try to deal with 'ordinary life', springing up ever unquenched under the trample of world policies and events, there are love-stories touched in, or love in different modes, wholly absent from The Hobbit. But the highest love-story, that of Aragorn and Arwen Elrond's daughter is only alluded to as a known thing. It is told elsewhere in a short tale. Of Aragorn and Arwen Undómiel. I think the simple 'rustic' love of Sam and his Rosie (nowhere elaborated) is absolutely essential to the study of his (the chief hero's) character, and to the theme of the relation of ordinary life (breathing, eating, working, begetting) and quests, sacrifice, causes, and the 'longing for Elves', and sheer beauty. But I will say no more, nor defend the theme of mistaken love seen in Eowyn and her first love for Aragorn. But altogether it would hardly amount to the excision of a single long chapter.
People miss the whole context. Here, the theme is that of Love. The characters in question are Sam (rustic, simple love) being compared to Aragorn (higher, nobler love). Tolkien also mentions Éowyn because of her feelings towards Aragorn. It's not a comparison between Frodo and Sam. LotR is a story about the hobbits and all four serve a purpose in the story. They all start out as fairytale heroes but only three return with a gain. Frodo is the tragic hero of the tale.
Furthermore, in many of his letters, Tolkien talks about Frodo as the central character.
Here is a small consignment of 'The Ring': the last two chapters that have been written, and the end of the Fourth Book of that great Romance, in which you will see that, as is all too easy, I have got the hero into such a fix that not even an author will be able to extricate him without labour and difficulty. Lewis was moved almost to tears by the last chapter. All the same, I chiefly want to hear what you think, as for a long time now I have written with you most in mind. (letter #91).
Many people think since Sam is the only one (physically) present there, Tolkien is talking about Sam; but in truth, the one character who is in 'fix' here is Frodo. The main objective of the story is how will Frodo, with Sam's help, go to Mordor and destroy the Ring. Since Sam abandons the idea of destroying the Ring and chooses to follow Frodo's 'dead body', hence endangering the fate of the world, I doubt it has to be about him. We need Frodo to save the world. And we need Sam to save Frodo. Without Frodo, Middle-earth is doomed and the story and the plot cannot go any further than this.
In another letter to David Masson (1955), Tolkien says this:
'Surely how often "quarter" is given is off the point in a book that breathes Mercy from start to finish: in which the central hero is at last divested of all arms, except his will?
(emphasis is mine)
Frodo is the one who divests himself of all arms. And it's his will that's repeatedly talked about throughout the story. The central hero Tolkien talking about here is him.
In The Silmarillion, Frodo is the only character mentioned from the Fellowship. Gandalf is mentioned as Olórin, not Gandalf. Surely, it's a bird-eye view of LotR, but the sentence that was phrased as 'Frodo with the help of his servant destroyed the ring' could also have been said differently with Sam being in focus instead. In the letter #246, JRRT goes in extreme detail regarding Frodo, his heroism, his contribution to the quest, and his relevance in the story thematically. Frodo was the antithesis of Sauron and fought against him singlehandedly. The battle of wills, not any physical battle. In the Field of Cormallen, both Frodo and Sam are honoured, but Frodo is still bestowed with the highest honour for his service (they sang 'Frodo of the Nine Fingers in his honour). Tolkien's words on this:
Frodo deserved all honour because he spent every drop of his power of will and body, and that was just sufficient to bring him to the destined point, and no further. Few others, possibly no others of his time, would have got so far. The Other Power then took over: the Writer of the Story (by which I do not mean myself), 'that one ever-present Person who is never absent and never named' (as one critic has said). (Letter #192)
also frodo wouldn't have made it out of the shire without him.
It's been many years since I read the book, so my memory might betray me, but if I remember it correctly, Sam helped them in the Old Forest because he was the only not under the spell of the tree (Old Man Willow, I suppose). In other instances Frodo took precautions himself. He knew whom to trust. The rest was handled by Merry and Pippin while they left their home and met Strider. Frodo saved his friends from Barrow Wight at the Downs, was the only one to summon courage enough to get back at the Nazgúl while the other three hobbits were terrified. Are you sure you aren't making any overstatements in your comments?
sam carried frodo on his shoulders in mordor and fought shelob all alone.
His contribution in helping Frodo and getting him to Mordor, even on his shoulder, are undeniable. He has a long list of accomplishments, for which he was generously rewarded in the end. But his accomplishments don't make him the 'true hero of LotR', definitely not greater than Frodo.
I can't recall the taste of food, nor the sound of water, nor the touch of grass. I'm naked in the dark. There's nothing — no veil between me and the wheel of fire. I can see him with my waking eyes.
This was Frodo's condition while they were nearing Orodruin. He still didn't give up. No one else, I repeat no one else, was put through these conditions, not even Sam. There comes a time when the Ring physically forces Frodo to put itself on. He resists it and then finds Galadriel's phial. When Sam carries Frodo on his shoulders, he states Frodo hardly weighed more than a hobbit child. It was either Sam was rewarded for his kindness or Frodo had actually lost so much weight that he didn't even weigh more than a child at that time.
'All gave some and some gave all' is a quote I read somewhere. Frodo was the one who gave all he had. He was the kindest, bravest, and most selfless hobbit. Tolkien might have meant Sam to be the chief hero/main character, but that means that for a 'supporting character', Frodo is far more heroic, relevant to the story, because without him, the story wouldn't even exist.
___
I hope this answer was convincing enough for you, anon. Thanks for reminding me why I grew to dislike LotR fandom so much. Apparently, anything pro Frodo must be responded with "sam is the true hero" and "tolkien said so" without looking at the context of the phrases because it helps you with your own bias.
