“I heard your voice, so I came... Aoba-san.”

Hooo-boy, if that doesn’t get me emotional every single time. Call it my bias for eccentric bundles of sunshine and softness, or my crippling weakness for the secretly-handsome-and-devastatingly-earnest type, but you can’t change my mind: Clear is, hands down, DMMD’s best love interest. Character development-wise, thematically, romantically, he nails every trial thrown at him, gets his man,  and proceeds to break your heart in the tenderest, sincerest way possible. I am hopping with Huge Fan Energy, so this post is gonna be unapologetically long and self-indulgent and grossly enthusiastic. Yeeeee.

Look, DMMD meta analysis has been done to death, I get it. This game is old. But I think it stands as testament to its excellent production that it’s still a game worth revisiting years later — especially during these times when social contact is so hard pressed to come by and we all rabidly devour digital media like a horde of screeching feral gremlins. (Have you seen Netflix’s stock value now? The exploding MMO server populations? Astonishing.) It’s pure, simple human nature to want to connect, to cling to members of our network out of biological imperative and our psychological dependency on each other. As cold and primitive at that sounds, social contact also fulfills us on a higher level: the community is always stronger than the individual; genuine trust begets a mutually supportive relationship of exchange and evolution. People learn from each other, and grow into stronger, wiser, better versions of themselves.

Yeah, I’m being deliberately obtuse about this. Of course I’m talking about Clear. Clear, who is a robot. Clear, who is nearly childlike in his insatiable curiosity regarding the human condition.

And it’s a classic literary tactic, using non-human entities to question the intangible constructs of a concept like ‘humanity’ — think Frankenstein, or Tokyo Ghoul, or Detroit: Become Human, among so, so many works in various media — all tackling that question from countless angles, all with varying measures of success. What does it mean to be human? To be good? Who are we, and where do we stand in the grand scheme of things? Is there even a scheme to follow? … Wait, what?

Jokes aside, there are so many ways that the whole approaching-human-yet-not-quite-there schtick can be abused into edgy, joyless existential griping. Nothing wrong with that if it’s what you’re looking for, except that we’re talking about a boys’ love game here. But DMMD neatly, sweetly side steps that particular wrinkle, giving us a wonderfully grounded character to work with as a result. 

Character Design — a see-through secret

Let’s start small: Clear’s design and premise. Unlike so many other lost, clueless robo-lambs across media, Clear does have a small guiding presence early on in his life. It takes the form of his grandfather, who teaches Clear about the world while also sheltering him from his origins. It means he learns enough to blend sufficiently into society; it also means that Clear has even more questions that sprout from his limited understanding of the world.

Told that he must never remove his mask lest he expose his identity as a non-human, Clear’s perpetual fear of rejection for what he is drives much of his eccentricity and challenges him throughout much of his route. As for the player, the mystery of what lies underneath his mask is a carrot that the writers get to dangle until the peak moment of emotional payoff. Even if it’s not hard to guess that there’s probably a hottie of legendary proportions stuck under there, there’s still significance in waiting for that good moment to happen. And when it does, it feels great.

His upbringing contextualizes and affirms his odd choice of fashion: deliberately generic, bashfully covered from the public eye, and colored nearly in pure white - the quintessential signal of a blank slate, of innocence. Contrasted with the rest of DMMD’s flashy, colorful crew, Clear is probably the most difficult to read on a superficial scale, not falling into the fiery, bare-chest sex appeal of a womanizer, or the techno-nerd rebel aesthetic that Noiz somehow rocks. Goofy weirdo? Possibly a serial killer? Honestly, both seem plausible at the start.

And that’s the funny thing, because as damn hard as he tries to physically cover himself up from society, Clear is irrepressibly true to his name: transparent to a fault. He’s a walking, talking contradiction, and it’s not hard to realize that this mysterious, masked stranger… is really just an open book. By far the most effusive and straightforward of the entire cast, his actions are wildly unconventional and sometimes wholly inexplicable. But given time to explain himself, he is always, always sincere in his intentions — and unlike the rest of the love interests, naturally inclined to offer bits of himself to Aoba. It doesn’t take the entire character arc to figure out his big, bad secret — our main character gets an inkling about halfway through his route — and what’s even better is that he embraces it, understanding that his abilities also allow him to protect what he cherishes: Aoba. 

So what if he doesn’t fit into an easily recognizable box of daydream boyfriend material? He’s contradictory, and contradiction is interesting. Dons a gas mask, but isn’t an edgelord. Blandly dressed, but ridiculously charming. Unreadable and modestly intimidating — until he opens his mouth. Even without the benefit of traversing his route, there’s already so much good stuff to work with, and sure as hell, you’re kept guessing all the way to the end.

Character Development — from reckless devotion into complaisant subservience, complaisant subservience into mutual understanding. And then, of course: free will, and true love. 

At its core, DMMD is about a dude with magic mind-melding powers and his merry band of attractive men with — surprise! — crippling emotional baggage. Each route follows the same pattern, simply remixing the individual character interactions and the pace of the program: Aoba finds himself isolated with the love interest, faces various communication issues varying on the scale of frustrating to downright dangerous, wanders into a sketchy section of Platinum Jail, bonds with the love interest over shared duress, breaks into the Oval Tower, faces mental assault by the big bad — and finally, finally, destroys those internal demons plaguing the love interest, releasing the couple onto the path of a real heart-to-heart conversation. And then, you know, the lovey-dovey stuff. 

Here’s the thing: as far as romantic progression goes, it’s really not a bad structure. There’s room to bump heads, but also to bond. The Scrap scene is a thematically cohesive and clever way to squeeze in the full breadth of character backstory while simultaneously advancing the plot. In this part, Aoba must become the hero to each of his love interests and save them from themselves. Having become privy to each other’s deepest thoughts and reaching a mutual understanding of each other, their feelings afterwards slide much more naturally into romantic territory. They break free of Oval Tower, make their way home, and have hot, emotionally fulfilling sex or otherwise some variation on the last few steps. The end. 

That is, except for Clear. 

Clear’s route is refreshing in that he needs none of these things — the climax of his emotional arc actually comes a little after the halfway point of his route. When Clear’s true origins are revealed, he comes entirely clean to Aoba, fighting against his fear of rejection but also trusting that Aoba will listen. It’s a quiet, vulnerable moment, rather than the action-packed tension we normally experience during a Scrap scene. 

That doesn’t mean it’s prematurely written in — it simply means that he reaches his potential faster than the other characters. Because of that, he’s free to pursue the next level of his route’s development much, much sooner in the timeline: he overcomes his fears of his appearance, he confesses his love to Aoba, he leaves the confines of a largely dubious master-servant relationship and allows himself to be Aoba’s equal. Clear’s sprite art mirrors his emotional transformation all the way through, exposing him to the literal bone — and Aoba’s affection for him doesn’t change a single bit. Beautiful.

The whammy of incredible moments doesn’t just stop there, though. I don’t exactly recall the order the routes DMMD is ideally meant to be played in, but I believe Clear’s is meant to be last. And if you do, I can guarantee that it becomes a hugely delightful gameplay experience — in order to achieve his good ending, you must do absolutely nothing with Scrap. It doesn’t just subvert our player expectations of proactively clicking and interacting with our love interests; it grabs the story by its thematic reins and yanks it all back to the forefront of our scene. 

In every route besides Clear’s, Scrap is a tool used to insert Aoba’s influence into and interfere with his target’s mind. Using his powers of destruction, Aoba is able to prune whatever maligned thoughts are harming his target; in any conventional situation, using Scrap is the right choice. 

But one of the central problems in Clear’s route is his conflict between the impulses of his conditioning and his desire to live freely as a human would. Breaking free of Toue’s programming is what initially made him unique; growing beyond the rules imposed by his grandfather is what makes him human. In the final conflict scene, Clear’s decision to destroy his key-lock is an action of true autonomy, made with perfect understanding of the consequences and a sincere, selflessly selfish desire to protect someone he loves. In order to receive his good end, you have to respect his decision. It doesn’t matter which option you pick — by using Scrap, Aoba turns his back on every positive choice he made with Clear and attempts to exert his authority over him. This is Aoba becoming Toue; this is Aoba trying to reinstate himself as ‘Master’ right as he approved Clear as his equal. That’s blatant hypocrisy, and it doesn’t matter if Aoba is trying to do it for Clear’s ‘own good’ — that’s not Aoba’s call to make. If you truly wish to respect Clear’s free will, you will stand by. This is the truth of the moment: Clear has no emotional blockages that Aoba needs to fix. Believe in him, just as he believed in you.

The path to his heart is, and always has been, clear. Scrap was never needed from the start.

While Aoba might be the main character, Clear is undeniably a hero in his own route just as much. Tirelessly earnest and always curious, he leaps headlong into the unknown and emerges with his newfound enlightenment. He’s unafraid of weathering trials, even to the point of accepting death, and returns anew from oblivion to a sweet, cathartic ending. That’s about as textbook hero’s journey as it gets — if that doesn’t make him unquestionably, certifiably, unconditionally human, then I will scream.

And only finally… there is the free end. The final CG is like a throwback to our first impression of him: indistinct, purposefully obscured from proper view. But this time, we know better — and so does Aoba. Looks were never what mattered in Clear’s route. If you were patient, and you were open-minded, and you listened… well, what we realize now is that Clear was doing the exact same thing for you, too.

From a carefree, aimless robot-man with only the gimmick of “eccentric ditz” to carry him forward, we get a supremely more interesting character by the end: a man who has graduated from the well-intentioned but claustrophobic conditioning of his childhood; a weapon who has defied the imperatives placed on him by his creator’s programming; a wanderer who has, through unconditional patience and empathy, discovered love, and striven to become a better person for it. Who was it that ever doubted Clear’s character? He’s the goddamn goodest boy that ever wanted to be a real boy. Of course Clear is human. And in fact, he does it better than every single one of the actually human love interests. You can’t change my mind.

The Romance — kindness is really fucking attractive, okay.

Like I’ve said earlier, I have my Big Fan Blinds stuck on pretty tight. I might be conjuring sparks from thin air. But I think every choice was a deliberate creative decision on the writers’ part, and they deserve all the kudos for it — I’m just the lucky player who gets to enjoy it. But aside from Noiz (who I also think is a perfect darling as well — I could go on and on about him), Clear’s route is a model example for consent and healthy relationships in VN storytelling. This is reciprocated on both sides: never does Aoba infringe on Clear’s boundaries, and neither does Clear. They’re sensitive to each other’s needs and concerns; they ask for permission and stop when it isn’t granted (and when it is, boy do they get frisky — I’m not complaining!) I don’t need to say much more, because I think that consent is both fantastic and yes, incredibly hot (the scene in DMMD is tons more sad, go play Re:connect!). Good writing shows off the massive erotic potential enthusiastic consent puts into intimacy, and Aoba’s and Clear’s relationship is honestly a dream playground. The point is, I think Aoba and Clear genuinely do find equal balance in their relationship by the end of his route (and certainly through Re:connect). If you follow through Re:connect’s storyline, there’s even more thematic richness that comes through in the form of Clear’s greatest asset: communication. The couple get to discuss the long-term implications of them being together; they both offer concerns, points, and assurances to the other, and it’s just a soft, honest moment not so unlike the worries of a real relationship. Hearing is kind of Clear’s motif sense, but it’s really great to see that Aoba also subtly picks it up, really flexes his own communication skills to better engage with Clear. 

Point is, Clear’s route spoke to me on a lot of little levels. Design-wise, he’s already got a ton going for him, and his story builds upon it rather than against it, enriching his development and grounding him a little more solidly in the DMMD universe (and in my heart). His route, aside from being emotionally ruinous, carries a pretty solid chunk of world-building (only beaten out by Mink’s and Ren’s, probably), and the romance feels organic, healthy, and realistic. He’s not the only one with an excellent route, but he’s my favorite. If you read through all of this, you’re a real trooper and I’m extremely impressed. Thanks for tuning in. Peace.

The Scholar’s Love Ch. 4

“You are very handsome,” I croaked finally.

He stopped his cheerful chatter and bore his eyes into mine. I couldn`t see well but it seemed to me that he was blushing.

“You`ve never acknowledged my appearance before,” he almost stuttered.

I took a step towards him. His familiar smell hit my nostrils and this time it was even more alluring than before. He looked so strong and yet so gentle, so soft and so tempting.

“Do you have any preference?” my sister asked.

“Hm?”

“About your hair,” she laughed softly.

I shook my head.

“Do as you wish.”

I felt her warm soft hands touching my hair. It felt familiar, it felt safe, it felt like just back home. Only she could make me feel a little better when my mind wasn`t at ease. I needed this temporary comfort. Her humming, as gentle as a lullaby, soothed me.

I closed my eyes and my thoughts returned to last night when I came back to my room in the storm. I was drenched and livid, running wildly all the way to the scholar`s court. I tripped at the gate and fell on the ground. Then I puked because I couldn`t hold it any longer. The horror just threatened to burst from underneath my skin. The sight of Crown Prince in armor, covered in blood, looking at me wouldn`t stop haunting me even now.

I managed to get up and found the leather tube which flew from my hands when I fell. I took a look around and to my relief every single room was dark.  At least no one saw me coming in this state. Breathing heaving I pushed the door to my room open and entered inside. I hastily lit the lantern on my desk and after drying my hands in the curtains, opened the tube to reveal its contents.

I thought that the slaughter was the worst thing that I had seen tonight but the message inside was much more terrifying. It was a plea for help from the governor of the Eastern region and a list of corrupt official who wrongfully took the money designated to build dams. I scanned all the names from the lowest to the highest rank and the last one made me gasp. Junho, the Crown Prince… I stared at the writing, hoping that I hadn`t read it correctly the first time but his presence at the fight suddenly made a lot of sense.

I touched lightly the place where the governor had stamped his seal. That man was brave, brave enough to point out the second in command in the country after the king. But even if he didn`t, every single one of the officials were under Crown Prince`s wing anyway, so it was all pointing to him. The letter was probably meant to reach Minister Ha but was intercepted in time.

I left the letter on my bed and sat next to it. I had no idea what to do. The scheme was too big for someone unimportant like me.  I couldn`t reach the King on my own. No one would allow me an audience without me stating the reason and me stating the reason meant that I`d drop dead before I could even manage to stand before His Majesty.

At least for tonight I was safe because despite Crown Prince seeing my face, he had no idea who I was. That wouldn`t last for long though; it was a matter of time before he found me and killed me. I hugged my knees, the cold possessing my body. I probably should have changed but dry clothes were the last thing on my mind. Minister Ha`s manor would be under surveillance now and I couldn`t go there without exposing myself. My only chance to reach the king was Prince Jaehwan. I could only count that his love for Nava and his feelings for me were strong enough not to side with his brother. I couldn`t be sure, of course, but I was on borrowed time.

Attending tonight`s celebration was a big risk since every royal would be there but we weren`t supposed to have direct contact.  I was hoping that if the gods were merciful once and helped me escape, they could be merciful again and spare my pitiful life. I knew that the prince would look for me anyway because he promised to do so after the fireworks, so I had to grab the opportunity. Playing safe would only give the enemy enough time to track me down. The enemy. The word stuck in my throat and I felt like puking again.

“You look tired,” my sister`s voice brought me back to reality.

“I didn`t sleep at all last night,” I smiled and held onto her hand.

I wished that it was only a nightmare. I wished her warmth could make it go away.

“Don`t worry, I`ll make you pretty,” I caught her wink in the reflection of the mirror.

I could never become as pretty as she was.

In a month time her education as lady-in-waiting would be complete and if she was lucky or unlucky, depends on how one viewed it, she could be chosen as a concubine by the king. And if she remained after the initial selection she still had the chance to be favored by any of the princes. But my sister was too beautiful to remain unselected.

“Wouldn`t you like to be favored by someone younger,” I asked suddenly lowering my voice to barely a whisper because such talk could get us both beheaded, “Someone like… Crown Prince?”

She smiled and she pulled out a box full of hair pins and other adornments.

“I have seen him once when he came to visit the Queen,” she replied, her eyes still glued to the pins, “But I`d be more than happy to be graced by our King. Crown Prince has too many concubines for his young age, and  they say he is too greedy for beauty… and for everything else.”

My sister was not a scholar but she was well-educated and gifted with many talents. My father insisted that we were able to form our own opinions and defend them when necessary. I knew I could trust her observation. She was a skilled warrior despite not having held a sword even once in her life.

“Will you be okay here?” I couldn`t really hide my concern.

I had no idea when Crown Prince would find out my identity and if he would go after my family. And my sister was here in the Palace, all alone just like me.

“Of course, I will. You shouldn`t be afraid,” she finally picked a couple of things from the box, “What do you think?”

     “You have impeccable taste.”

I looked myself in the mirror when my sister was done with me. I had rarely seen myself this feminine - probably only on my birthdays and new year celebrations - but this time she had outdone herself. My hair was pinned in complicated ways she must have learned here. I don`t know if she had guessed that I liked someone and that`s why she put extra effort to make me beautiful. I never told her anything about the prince but sisters somehow knew these things.

I rose from the chair.

“I probably have to go now,” I threw a quick glance at the side table where I left the scroll I brought with myself, “I also have a gift for you.”

She took it and unrolled it.

“It`s a painting,” I added awkwardly.

A painting of two swallows sitting on a branch. My sister looked at it for a long time and my heart rate quickened. After what seemed as eternity she nodded.

“I will keep it as my most praised possession,” she smiled, “It`s lovely.”

I took a sigh of relief.

The music was too loud and the dancers’ movements were hypnotizing. There were also acrobats and a man breathing fire. Everyone kept talking and eventually I felt my head throbbing. I sipped from the wine and its taste mingled with that of my lip pomade.

Adra said I looked beautiful and I was willing to believe her but beauty cost me a lot. My hair was pulled painfully in elaborate braids held together by pins shaped like gardenias. My sister gracefully lent me her white dress with silver embroidery because mine were too plain and I wanted to look presentable. Mostly for the prince. I felt warmth creeping up my cheeks from even thinking about him.

Our table was far away from his. New officials were always seated next to the gates while the royal family sat on a grand table right before the House of Splendor and Joy. I couldn`t see them from there and I was very thankful for that. I knew that Crown Prince was there too and with my life hanging on a thread, I was glad to be so far away from him.

“You`re drinking a lot,” Adra noted.

She looked gorgeous in her fuchsia dress, fresh and bright like a flower in full bloom. Only the Queen was allowed to wear pink if someone else dared to sport that particular pastel shade of it or adorn themselves with cherry blossoms which was the symbol of Her Majesty, they would be executed on the spot.

“I`m nervous,” I admitted.

She threw a glance at some of the young scholars who kept smiling at their female counterparts way too much from across the dancers`stage and shook her hand.

“They can`t do anything to us if we stick together,” she patted my hand which was resting on the table.

But Crown Prince could. I drank again. Wine didn`t really soothe me but it made me feel dizzy and the cogs in my mind were spinning at a slower pace. If I took a couple of more sips, I would probably stop caring about the message at all.

Ten minutes before midnight we were all urged to rise from our tables and head to the terrace to watch the fireworks. Adra held onto my elbow as we made our way along with the rest of the female scholars. I kept my head low the entire way. Of course, we were far behind the royal family and I deliberately walked slowly but I couldn`t take any risks. I also wasn`t very sober so walking fast without tripping wasn`t an option for the time being.

We all huddled together with eyes fixed on the sky and hearts filled with excitement. And as the magnificent explosion of colorful sparks began, I felt giddy and ecstatic. The sky magically adopted so many different colors that Crown Prince and my demise didn`t matter anymore. I was once more a child who happily waited for a chance to glimpse the fireworks coming from the palace and had to spend hours in the garden wrapped in blankets. But fireworks from up close were so much more magnificent.

Someone brushed past me and I caught a glimpse of the prince. He gave me a wink when our eyes met and continued walking towards the garden. I quickly searched for Adra but she was staring at the sky, her eyes sparkling wildly. I quietly slipped away from the crodn of female officials and used the shadows as my cover along the way.

The garden was awfully quiet and there was no soul in sight. Everyone from maids to masters was at the terrace whispering and marveling the show. I saw part of Prince Jaehwan`s robes peeking from behind the artificial mountain and hurried his way.

I found him casually leaning on the rocks. I had never seen him fully regal and I stopped abruptly to marvel at the young man in golden robes. I had seen designs of it in the textbooks before but nothing could surpass real life: the blue dragon on his chest, the red flames on his sleeves and down the hems, and, of course, the prince with his soft eyes and sensual lips and the way he gave life to the ceremonial attire. For the very first time I looked at him not only as a handsome man who made me uncomfortable from time to time but as someone I wanted to touch and be touched by so badly. I didn`t know if it was the wine or the fact that we were all alone in the middle of the night but I didn`t even feel an ounce of shame for wanting him.

He smiled when he saw me and thankfully came to me.

“Miss Nala, how beautiful you are,” he gently spread my arms as if we were going to dance but he studied me from head to toe instead, “When I caught a sight of you tonight, I thought that you were a fairy.”

“Oh…” I only managed to mumble.

His touch, albeit not improper at all, burned my skin and the heat was spreading throughout  my entire body. I wanted him to hold me, I wanted to feel him.

“It would have been so nice if we could sit next to each other,” he continued unaware of my thoughts, “I wish we could have spent the evening together. Jongsu wouldn`t stop talking and he could be very annoying sometimes…”

The prince was probably going say something else but I simply leaped ahead and pressed my body against his. I felt him stiffen in my embrace but I couldn`t stop myself even if I tried at this point. He was too intoxicating. The fabric of his robe felt to smooth underneath my palm but the sensation I craved was of his strong back, of his hard arms, of his entire being.

I drew a few short sharp breaths and lifted my eyes to meet his while my chin remained resting on his chest.

“I want you,”  I almost pleaded.

He opened his mouth but no sound came out of it. Instead he just examined my face. I was so painfully aware of the heat exuding from his body now, that I could melt in his arms. His lips kept beckoning me and I couldn`t resist their call much longer.

There was a flick in his gaze and whatever madness had taken over me, now took over him. Before I could react, I felt his arms lock around me as he lifted me up and I felt my back against the cold solid rock. Next thing I knew the prince`s lips crashed into mine and I couldn`t help but moan because I had finally found out what they tasted like.

We continued kissing hungrily and I buried my fingers in his silky hair. His body was so firmly pressed against mine that tomorrow my back would be bruised but I didn`t care. All that mattered was that I could feel him.

“Jaehwan,” I whispered weakly and I started kissing his jaw and down his neck.

His hand was fumbling underneath my skirts but it was impossible to find bare skin due to excessive amount of undergarments we were obliged to wear. Still I could feel his fingers through the thin cotton. He squeezed my thigh.

“I love you,” he pressed his lips to my now exposed collarbone.

Our bodies were pulsating with energy I have never known before. I felt stupid for resisting him for so long. Nothing could surpass the euphoria of his kisses.

“Well well,” someone said and Jaehwan almost dropped me on the ground.

I gasped for air and my mind slowly realized that there was another person. Another person who saw me in this state – with my hair and clothes completely disheveled. And with a man. Shame hit me hard like a hammer.

“Brother,” Jaehwan exclaimed quietly and tried to shield me with his body as much as he can.

My mouth went dry. I felt panic rising in my body and I was afraid to look at the person. Still I forced myself to confirm my worst fears. Trembling I settled my gaze on him.

Crown Prince was smirking at me and there was recognition plastered all over his face. And his eyes screamed murder.

Bruce had no clue what was going on around him. He heard Diana ask that the goddess of witchcraft send him away and that her request was obliged. The words he wanted to say in protest felt like they evaporated in his mouth as he traveled through space and time to some foreign location.

He landed on his knees, surrounded by a crowd.

“Warriors!” a chorus of angry voices shouted as Bruce tried to recalibrate himself after such a forced teleportation.

There was the distinct shifting of armour amplified by the thousands reverberating around him, like a shockwave that was meant to knock him to his feet. All it managed to do was seize his heart with panic as he lifted his head to stare down his foes.

It shocked him more than he’d care to admit when he came face to face with an army that was made up entirely of women. Donning leather armour with ancient designs and medieval weapons in their hands, the female cavalry that threatened to skewer him with spears and swords and arrows reminded him of the costume that his so-called partner wore…

“Intruder,” roared an authoritative voice from behind the readied warrior. “Identify yourself.”

With all due respect, Bruce kept quiet while her surveyed what little terrain he could make out from the gaps in their forces. He spotted grass that was the color similar to emeralds, and trees that sway in the seabreeze. There was the sound of the ocean somewhere close but he couldn’t make out the direction it was in, meaning he had no obvious means to escape the angry women’s wrath. Carefully, monitoring them to determine whether or not he was allowed to move, he took the chance to see if he was enclosed in a circle by their army or if he was his back against a wall of some kind.

No matter which direction he cast his gaze, there were hundreds of furious glares staring right back at him.

“I won’t ask you again!” Warned the assertive voice from before.

Bruce knew that he should not press his luck any further he wanted to make it out of such a sticky situation alive, so he turned back around and replied with just as firm a tone, “Am I on the private island of the Amazons?”

Meeting their demands with a question urged the arches to pull on their drawstrings and the spear-throwers to tug their arms back. Furious, the supposed commander howled at him, “You were warned. Atta--!”

“Heads up!” Cheered a familiar, cocky, unwanted voice the second before something sharp landed in front of Bruce. The way it embedded itself into the ground was so fierce, he took a step back for fear of being associated with the soaring trident.

“Dammit,” he hissed to himself as many of the warriors turned to face the direction from which the weapon was thrown. Thinking on his feet, Bruce blurted out the only thing he could think to say in order to diffuse the arising tension. “We mean you no harm! We must speak with your queen--”

“Silence, heathen!” Demanded a woman with long brown hair, sitting on horseback and armed with nothing more than her animosity.

Bruce met her hatred with his signature indifference when a gust of wind rushed by him. “Hey Batman,” said the Flash, as chipper as ever. “Glad we got here when we did.”

Bruce had so many things he wanted to say to that, such as an inquiry about how they got to the seemingly secret island, or why he let Arthur announce their arrival like that. However, he lost his chance to when Victor landed next to him and filled in the gaps faster than the speedster. “Your magician friend really saved your ass just now.”

“You really couldn’t have picked a worse time.” Bruce said, vehemently.

Ignoring his derision, Cyborg scanned the group and whispered to him nothing more than a number, “Five thousand.”

The army was larger than he first anticipated. Unwilling to participate in a standstill any longer, Bruce kicked Aquaman’s trident down from its upright position and stood over the holes in the ground that its prongs had made. Then, he made sure that his voice carried its signature boom when combined with the distortion application in his suit as he proclaimed, “We seek an audience with Queen Hippolyta, on behalf of her daughter Diana! There are demons being made in the Underworld that threaten all of mankind, and she is down there fending them off on her own! She needs your help, now!”

The lie he told was small, but it helped to sell the emergency he was presenting to the army and their commander. As Arthur was pushed through the crowd with his hands in the air, his shirtless body offending the women greatly, Batman stood tall at the front of the haphazard Justice League in the hopes that his stoic demeanour would prove to them that his claim was legitimate and worthy of their attention.

It took longer than he would have liked - with images of Diana battling those lava rock-made demons passing through his mind at lightning speed sending him into a spiraling state of concern - but eventually, the commander spoke over the silence and the chirping cicadas to decree, “Bring them to the queen’s palace.She will know if he speaks the truth.”

Not one to bask in the feeling of relief, Bruce released an involuntary sigh when his spontaneous scheming managed to keep him alive. Considering the chaos that his involuntary teleportation caused, any turn of events that didn’t end with him being sliced in two gave him a fighting chance.

And, as a result, Diana too.

The great hall of the palace was shrouded in gold, almost as if every inch of the room had been bathed in the metal. Filled to the brim with what he assumed to be Amazonian council members, none of the other women had the same presence in Bruce’s eyes as the queen herself. Hippolyta stood in front of her circular throne, appearing domineering and spiteful as she glared at the gathered members of the League.

The gathered men.

“You four are quite brave,” remarked the queen with a false tone of admiration. “Traversing the Underworld, facing off against demons while some of you are nothing more than mere mortals, staring down one of my strongest fleets and commanding them to bring you to me.”

“If it makes you feel any better,” Arthur thought it was wise to chime in at that exact moment. “I’m not mortals like them.”

Hippolyta cracked a smile, Bruce noticed, but it most definitely stemmed from her righteous sense of hatred. “I know, Atlantean. You’re merely the one who threw his weapon at my warriors.”

No one in the room spoke, awaiting Arthur’s reply. Thankfully, the silence drew out over many beats, which was music to Bruce’s ears.

“Tell the queen what you told me, Bat-man.” Ordered the general from the field. Though he’s never told her his heroic moniker, he figured that it wasn’t that difficult to identify him in such a way given his costume.

“My name is Bruce Wayne. Your majesty, I didn’t mean to randomly appear on your island.” Bruce apologized in his own way.

“No? You materialized in the very spot where a raging purple fire spawned in our field.”

Bruce used her words against her, “You said it yourself - you know I’m mortal.”

Hippolyta’s eyes narrowed as she spat, “Then who sent you here?”

“Hecate.”

The mention of the goddess sent the Amazonian council into a frenzy after a collective gasp filled the space. For the first time since he met her, she reminded Bruce of Diana. When she was too distracted by his circumstances to present herself as the matriarch of the island, she had the same emotional pair of eyes as her daughter. Her shock, her cautious joy and her immediate curiosity all fought for dominance over her expression, painting a rather human depiction of the queen of the Amazons.

“What nonsense is this!?” Screamed the general.

“Menalippe!” Scolded the Queen, regaining her composure by the time she finished saying the woman’s name.

Menalippe was taken aback, but she refused to cease her inquiry. “He mentions a goddess from our history and expects us to believe him!? What, were his friends brought here by Poseidon!? Were they flown in on the back of Zeus’ eagle!? Our gods are not for you to speak of so lightly!”

Unaware of the fact that the Amazons thought of their gods as deceased, Victor raised his hand at Bruce’s side. “No, we were brought together by the magician Zatanna. She told us that Bruce needed us, and her portal brought us here.”

“Diana and I visited her—“

“Mentioning my daughter now too?” The wayHippolyta hissed at him made it easy to compare her to what he imagined Medusa would have sounded like.

If she was real.

But she wasn’t.

Bruce hoped, at the very least.

Unafraid by the growing animosity in the great hall, Bruce approached the bottom step of the staircase that led to the infuriated queen. There were whispers that also reminded him of snakes, but he persevered. “We know your daughter. She is a founding member of our team and all we want to do is to keep this world safe. She was with me while I investigated these strange stone-made creatures that were gathering… in the North, and it led us to ask a magician I know—a sorcerer who could help me locate the place where these monsters come from.”

He expected someone to interrupt him, to insult him or question his legitimacy. When no one made a sound within a millisecond after he said his last word, he decided to keep going.

“She sent us to the Underworld, and we met a woman in a cell. She said her name was Hecate. She had no idea just how long she had been trapped down there, but Diana realized that it had to be for thousands of years based on a story you told her about a battle between your gods.”

“And somehow, only you escaped?” Scoffed the general, all while the queen tried to hide her sparkling eyes by closing them tightly.

Bruce could tell that he was breaking through to Hippolyta. Her heart was drawn to his story and desperately wishing it were true. He couldn’t guess when she last saw Diana, but—

He knew when she had last seen Hecate.

He climbed a single step, much to the frustration of the Amazonian council. Menalippe even drew a dagger out of its hilt from her back and readied herself to strike. Bruce didn’t care for her threatening behaviour, not when he had a goal. Not when he knew he was so close.

“Your majesty,” he tried to coddle her before he would have to push her back into some of her deepest memories. “You didn’t know that Hecate was alive, and she didn’t know that the war with Ares ever happened. Her last happy memory is when you dressed her for her wedding to Hades. She was honoured to meet your daughter, and now they're fighting alongside each other against Hades’ demons in the Underworld.”

He knew that what he had said was a lot to digest, and it took the queen some time to fully comprehend what he was telling her. With her eyes still shut, Bruce could still make out the pride she felt given the way the corners of her mouth quivered as they fought off the desire to smile. Her expression was so telling, the typically combative Menalippe called to her with an uncharacteristic softness. “My queen?”

Bruce climbed another step and was immediately blocked by the general’s body. She leapt down to the stair right before his and leered at him. Unperturbed, he decided it was time to get to the point.

Bruce knew that the reason why Hecate sent him here was so he could ask the queen of the Amazon one thing. “So, your majesty, I have one request of you: please... take us to the gates of hell. The same one you took Hecate through all those years ago. Let us help your daughter. Let us defeat Hades.”

Gisaengchung (Parasites) [SPOILERS]

A lovely tale on why you shouldn´t trust people!

Sinopsis: 

A family barely subsists in a basement they call home. Unemployed and at the border of misery, a job opportunity is presented to the older son Gi Woo, which consists on giving english classes to the daughter of a high class family. Step by step he gains the trust of the owner and begins to introduce his own family as workers in hopes of getting more money from them. 

Writing and characters (+some acting):

I am not very familiar of Korean movies, I´ve heard about some good movies but never actually watch any from the country. Now, I´ve heard about Bong Joon-Ho since I watch one of his previews works called Snowpiercer and even though that kind of movie is not exactly my favorite I have to admit it was really well written and the visuals were really creepy but pretty in some twisted way. 

Gisaenchung´s story is really well thought, all the details fit together like a puzzle of 500 pieces or more. It had to be meticulously written so to make some sort of sense and even then some things dont make so much sense, but Joon-Ho has a cover: this movies is a drama, suspense and dark humor movie. When you have a super dramatic rich family with their over the top reactions and mannerisms in an only drama movie it would be seen as a joke if they were trying to look serious or be taken seriously, in this case works perfectly since they are used as comic relief, specifically the rich mom being the most gullible and most dramatic of all. Their purpose is accomplish perfectly and the sheer dumb and naive nature of the mother works in favor of our bunch of vermin. 

It is a very understandable and digestible plot: you have a poor family of scammers, they get an opportunity to scam a family, they proceed to scam the rich family by pretending to be strangers to each other and working as a house keeper, a driver and 2 teachers, and then they get discovered. At the simplicity it doesnt sound that entertaining I suppose, everything in between is simple yet complex and then it goes into fucked up territory almost from 10 to 110 really quick. 

This family are assholes! Like... Complete assholes, the name of the movie is after them! They take advantage of a character that is super anxious about her children and is super naive and is really lonely because of his husband leaving for work a lot and completely destroy 2 lives in the process too! They get the husband´s driver fired by framing him as a sex addict with a kink and the housekeeper is fired by making her look like a tuberculosis patient. This people are awful! They are manipulative, dangerous, assholes! And yet... you kind of root for them? That´s how good the writing is. You know they are awful, you know they are manipulative. Hell, at the beginning they use manipulation to probably get someone fire and get money from a small pizza company they work for as box benders. AND THEY FUCKED UP AT LEAST A QUARTER OF THOSE BOXES! They are not good! 

...But who can blame them for being like that? They are living in a really bad situation, they are stealing wifi from a neighbor so they can check a WhatsApp to see if the pizza place send them a message. They were talented at sports, the daughter knows how to work with programs like photoshop and probably other types, the son is really smart reason why he was given the job as an english teacher and to be honest he is kind of good at it. They are not lazy people. The situation is not good for them and they can´t exactly get a good job due to not having a degree. It´s actually kind of sad to see their potential being wasted due to their economic situation. Of course anyone would survive in however manner they can, even if that makes them a bad person in the process. 

You have a rich family that supports and loves their children, shown as getting both of them private ¨teachers¨ (not enough love I guess, due to not fucking checking this people up in the first place and only trusting the recommendations of a college student). They aren´t bad people, they treat their workers fairly and they respect them and when there´s reason to fire someone they try to do so respectfully as not to damage their reputation or shame them (so much). You should feel sorry for them because they are so nice and are being scammed but you can´t shake the feeling that they kind of deserve it for being so naive. Well, at least not the children, those kids have 0 control over who their parents choose. THE PARENTS ARE SO DAMN DUMB! The mother specially! So anxious about your children learning and exploiting their talents but not so anxious to get the first whoever that crosses your ears? You feel bad, for them and maybe you dont get angry, they antics are not anger inducing, they are hilarious because, as i explain before, they over react A LOT. I don´t know if that was a directors decision or if the actors did what they pleased, they fit too well in the scene to not be planned.

One thing that stood out to me were the dialogues, they made sense but they became a bit descriptive in certain points.There were really good silent scenes, there was a good balance between dialogues and silence, though I don´t know why I felt certain dialogues were too much? Maybe it was with their reactions as well, Korean and older Mexican movies have a thing in common and that´s a level of exaggeration. Sometimes it´s good, sometimes it gets the spotlight and not in a good sense. With the rich family there was no problem, it was with certain characters like the daughter of the scam family that overreact in one scene. Since they were drunk it kind of made sense but it there wasn´t exactly a follow up of his outburst. it passed relatively quick so it wasn´t much of a problem. 

Sound and music: 

The dialogues were well said, there was no difference in volumes and it had no noise. The silent parts had a good sound, whether it was background noises or music, it never felt out of place. The sounds were actually relaxing at some point, specially with the rain or water flowing. It had a good crispiness on them, they sounded natural and not manufacture with materials. The music wasn´t over used or overbearing, it was mostly in the background. It wasn´t almost present in certain scenes, you could hear it but it was very low. It didn´t had weird spikes and it was kind of nice. Not exactly the most memorable. 

Photography and art: 

First... Some examples:

I mean... WOW. The different lights, the shadows, the colors, the difference in lighting from each set. EVERYTHING IS GORGEOUS. Easily identifiable, with that I mean if you see this screenshots you would probably recognize them immediately. I don´t know how original the setting is from other movies but MAN is it gorgeous. The shots are most of the time open, details are hidden in the background (even when they can be a bit blurry, sometimes there something behind), the lighting is the first thing you´ll notice. There´s so much contrast between the highlights and shadows, even though most of them are not really strong. 

The colors schemes for each place are not entirely different, I think the reason is they wanted to portray that both families have certain similarities, mostly the only difference being the living situation. It´s really interesting how you can find warm colors in both families, they all love each other, both families support each other and their interests. The parents praise their children (even though the scam family probably shouldn´t praise illegality but, meh...at that point it can be consider too late)  

The art department went OFF with this one. You can feel the filthiness and close space they live in, their living situation is bad but they manage. The other family is clean and clear and it has to be perfect that way. I think there were 2 parts where they work even harder. 

(This is a kind of Spoiler for the end) When they use blood, it tends to look fake in some movies, in here it looks really, really red and dark. The makeup for the strangled neck also was a nice touch and look really good. 

The other part I think was really well accomplish and that also might have taken FOR EVER TO MAKE IT WORK, was the flood, because it not only involved flooding and ENTIRE NEIGHBORHOOD, it involved a toilet spewing black water out as if it was puking. How did they manage to do all that? HOW MUCH WAS THE BUDGET? Geez, How many TAKES TOOK TO ACCOMPLISH THAT?! It look hella gross and the way it was spewing water was very realistic. 

There´s an entire sequence where three members of the family gets out of the rich house and walks towards their home and each step they take they descend even more, but that´s not all, it is raining and water is flowing and pouring, it looks fantastic and the neighborhood gets flooded and there´s stuff out getting fucked over. The makeup and the art design were crazy here, I wish and hope and pray they got paid well because MY GOD this was hard work at its finest. 

Conclusion: 

I need to watch more of this foreign movies and so do you! If you haven´t seen any movie out of Hollywood, you should do so. Maybe this one is a bit too much though. It goes well but there are certain parts that are a bit slow and then it goes fast and then slow again, it can be a rollercoaster and I´d be lying if i wasn´t expecting the movie to finally end. It is entertaining and it isn´t that long (2:12 hours), it doesn´t have any popular references. This movie was thought to be seen by an international audience. If you as an USA Citizen (´cause I´m not calling you Americans, America isn´t a country and USA is not the center of it) feel uncomfortable to be shown or for your culture be mock, well TOO BAD GET USED TO IT! Nah, I´m kidding. The kid in the movie has an obsession with indians and the family acts like USA is like high standard but in a mocking kind of way? My brother actually thought it was a Get Out situation so... 

This movie has a perfect blend of suspense and humor, the drama is palpable, it is there, the suspense and dark humor are the spotlight though. The actors are really good and the dialogues are not complicated to follow. It is pretty funny, heartwhrenching at points (specially the end) and entertaining movie, if you want to start watching foreign films you could start with this one. 

The worst part of the story is that both sides are right to react the way they did, and it´s kind of sad. 

This is what I took from it:  Poor or rich, it doesn´t matter. People are humans and they all have needs. And those needs will be satisfied one way or another. When you have a family, You will do whatever it takes to make them happy and sometimes drastic measures will be used. 

Go watch it, you won´t regret it.

Blossom and Beautiful

Hi. I made another Fix-it fic because that ending sucked and as I was crying myself to sleep Knight and Day´s version of Someday came up. It went downhill from there XD

They had agreed on a beach wedding because Curtis kept asking and prompting and Shiro had been busy and stressed and didn’t really want to even think about the subject. Curtis had insisted, had shown him a whole row of pictures with different location and color schemes. Shiro was too focused on the latest problem he had to deal with at the Garrison plus Keith and the Blades´ visit the following day to think about much else. Shiro had pointed and hummed. He had also nodded more than once.

A month later, Curtis had happily announced to Shiro that he had found the perfect spot and the perfect flowers for their altar. Shiro didn’t even remember what he´d said. Keith had called earlier that day and the small smile he´d given Shiro was still playing around in his mind.

Shiro hadn’t really cared back then. Right then, he wasn´t really paying attention to the wedding´s final details like he should either. He was a bit distracted, had trouble putting on his suit, and at the altar he was having trouble with the flower that went on his suit.

Most of the people invited were already there, but Keith wasn’t. As Shiro recalled, he wasn’t going to show up and may have even been off planet at that point. That was what Keith had last said, and as a friend of Curtis´s approached him to talk about something concerning the chairs, Shiro felt himself space out.

He and Keith talked the day before. It had not been pretty. It had not been ugly either, just long, and frustrating, and they had kissed. One kiss among screams and pleas that neither of them would ever admit they made. Keith in his arms, staring into his eyes with an emotion that Shiro had never seen, not on him. Defeat.

“If you had told me before...” he´d said.

“I did, but you would never listen when I did. By the time you decided to pay my words any mind and decided that you... that you...”

“I love you.”

Keith had winced, closed his eyes in obvious pain. “Shut up.”

Shiro had pressed his lips against Keith´s forehead and finished the thought. “By the time I said what you wanted to hear, you´d moved on?”

Keith had jerked back, glared. He had looked offended, but also terribly frustrated. “I could never move on,” he´d said, and Shiro knew he was fighting to get every single word out.  “I loved you. I still do, but you have him now, and there´s no turning back. You found your happiness. Again. And it isn´t with me. Again.”

“Keith…”

“Now let me go, and get out. And you better know that I´m not coming tomorrow, Shiro. I won´t go through all of this. Again.”

In an uncharacteristic show of impulsiveness and desperation and confusion, Shiro had kissed him.

Keith had frozen. Keith had gasped. Keith had shoved him away with a curse and all the strength he could muster. “No. No! You don´t get to do that! It´s too late, Shiro. You are too late! Now get out.”

“But, Keith...”

“Get out.”

Shiro had left after they had both gone hoarse from so much yelling. Keith had let the tears fall in silence while he stared out his window. Keith had promised himself and Shiro that he wouldn´t go. He didn’t want to go. He didn’t want to see for the umpteenth time how Shiro was taken away from him in his face. He had talked to his mom later that night. He was set to leave with Kolivan the next morning.

Against his better and rational judgement, Keith ended up in a suit, in the bar barely half a block away from where the wedding was about to happen. His vision was blurry, his hand shook where he gripped the drink he knew he wouldn´t taste. He´d gotten there hours earlier, had already down two cocktails. He didn’t feel good, and he preferred to blame in on the alcohol.

And then something landed in his lap.

Keith blinked the tears away and tensed, hand balled into a fist before he even turned around. He didn’t glance at what was in his lap, only stared at the shadow looming over him.

It was Shiro. In a tank top and shorts.

Keith´s mouth dropped to the ground. He glanced at what was in his lap, found a small bag that already seemed to be packed with what he guessed were clothes.

Keith stared. Shiro looked somber, but he was blushing, anguish threatening to overflow his overall demeanor. There was also a bruise blossoming on his cheek.

“You don´t have to say anything, or do anything,” Shiro said, and knelt down in front of his stool, placed one hand on Keith´s thigh, grabbed Keith´s hand with the other. He swallowed hard. Keith couldn’t find his voice yet.

“I know doing this, asking this of you, is unfair, and that you have no reason to trust me, not in this sense,” Shiro started. “I also know it´s unfair because I want to be selfish and cling to what you said to me yesterday. I want to cling to that little thought that you still feel something for me. I want you to know and believe that I feel something for you too.”

Shiro paused, took a deep breath. When he spoke again, his eyes bore into Keith´s with uncanny and very real honesty. “Keith I want you to know that I love you, that I should have never done any of this because it is you who I want to be with. I want you to know that you´ve meant everything to me for too long, and that I should have acted sooner, better, because you deserve so much better than what I´m about to say.”

Keith´s throat felt cotton dry. Even so, he managed a hoarse, “What do you mean?”

“I want to ask you to come with me. I want us to run away. To a new place where we can start anew and... and hopefully get a second chance.”

Keith blinked once, twice, then frowned.  He glanced around the bar, found only the bartender and the one other client in the room also gaping. Keith´s frown deepened. He felt his throat close up. He felt his heartbeat speed up. The words that followed came out of his mouth in a confused and almost unintelligible jumble. “But the wedding. Curtis... you said... and I... it´s too late for any of this...”

“Maybe so, but, Keith. I want you to let me try.” Shiro leaned in, raised his hands to cup Keith´s face between his hands. When he spoke again, Keith could feel his hot breath against his face. “Keith? Please? Will you let me try, just this one time? That is all I ask, and I know it can be too much.”

Keith´s heart had never been made of ice, contrary to what people like James and Lance once believed. When it came to Shiro, Keith had never stood a chance, no matter what, or when. Keith wasn´t sure if he loved or hated that fact, or if Shiro was aware of it. He didn’t think Shiro knew just what a huge weak spot he´d always been to Keith.

He sucked in a deep breath, His hand shot out. His fingers tangled in Shiro´s shirt and pulled. This kiss was painful, as was the one from yesterday, but the pain in this one seemed duller, sweeter.

When they broke apart, breathless and flushed, Keith was the one who swallowed hard. He dug his free hand into the bag in his lap. “Shiro, if you ever make me go through anything, anything at all, once more...”

“I´m done for?”

Keith pulled him in for another kiss. Done for? Like Keith could ever be done with Shiro, even if he wanted.

“If we´re doing the classic rom-com slash drama runaway...” Keith mumbled, and let Shiro pull him to his feet.

“Already got us covered. The sound of the tins behind may be bothersome, but that´s about it.”

Keith paused, processed the words for a moment, then sighed. He ran his fingertips over Shiro´s cheek. “Did Curtis hit you? For… doing this?”

Shiro looked mildly upset at that. “What? No. He... he wasn´t really surprised. He... he left before the ceremony started, as soon as I told him I needed to come get you. He didn’t ask many questions. He said he had a feeling… ever since I chose to go with you and the Blades to the city ruins instead of going with him to choose the cake.”

Keith tried to squash the small surge of pride and victory that came with those words. “Then who gave you the bruise?”

“Oh. Uh, this was… this was Pidge. She was mad we´d forced her into a dress, but having made her do that only for the wedding to not go through. Well, she didn’t like that, but she did say to send you and everyone else their regards.”

Keith smiled. He walked out with Shiro trailing behind, ignored the tins hanging to the back of the car and slid inside. Shiro got into the driver´s seat. Keith dug into his bag and pulled out a pair of sunglasses. He put them on. Shiro turned on the radio.

“I don´t really have a plan of where we´ll go from here,” he said softly, and Keith got the feeling he wasn’t talking only about their route.

“I´ll help you figure it out. it´s something I´ve had planned for a while,” he admitted, and cranked up the volume before Shiro had a chance to answer.

Into the Sunset

Finally done the Jasper one-shot I’ve been working on!  It got pretty long but I’m still posting it here as promised.  Since I rarely write post-BD I ended up including lots of little headcanons that nicely accompany the storyline.  Enjoy :)

Summary: Ten years after Breaking Dawn, Jasper’s life is fuller than he ever could have imagined.  But there’s one dream he’s held close to his heart this whole time: to ride a horse again.

Jasper POV

It was strange enough that Renesmee and Jacob had invited Alice and me out to their place to hunt, and nobody else.  But the real mystery was Alice’s level of anticipation.  

“No, no!  The blue one!” She snatched the shirt I had chosen out of my hands, instantly replacing it with one of her twenty-seven favorite shirts and looking up at me with the golden eyes she knew I couldn’t resist. “Please?”

I side-grinned and reached back up into the closet without looking, letting my fingers rest on a button-down dress shirt that I knew would offend her color scheme for today. “What’ll you give me?”

The next thing I knew she had me scrunched into the darkest corner of the closet, pinning me to the wall with a kiss.  “I’ll give you nothing if you don’t wear it,” she threatened softly, her voice tickling my ear.  I closed my eyes for just a second, reveling in her desire, then donned the blue shirt.

“You’re a tough negotiator, ma’am,” I grumbled cheerfully, following her into the bathroom.  She was already rummaging deep into her “blue tones” makeup bag.  I folded my arms and leaned against the wall for a time, watching her with amusement as her excitement bubbled over into a fever pitch.  Gift or not, the fact that she was doing her makeup at human speed was a dead giveaway.

“So?”

“So what?”

“So what’s the surprise?”

She glanced at me in the mirror.  “There’s no surprise, why?”

I smiled at her reflection and pulled away from the wall, swaggering closer.  I wrapped my arms around her shoulders, bending to kiss the side of her neck.  “You’re a terrible liar,” I said in her ear, willing her to relax.  “That’s one of the things I love most about you, you know.”

“I know,” she said lightly, wringing one hand free to finish her makeup.

“What’s the surprise?” I asked again, pulling at her resistance more with every second.

She ignored me at first, but then spun around in my arms.  “Don’t you dare!  Nessie’s been working on this for… hmph.”  She clamped her mouth shut, growling deep in her throat.

I chuckled, releasing her fully.  “Well now we’re getting somewhere.”

“And you’re really going to love it, so no more cheating, if you please.”  Her excitement softened, blending with some of the ingredients her love for me was made of. We rested our palms together and then pulled them away, leaving only our fingertips touching.  We merely stared for what felt like our own private eternity, making love in that deeper language that barely requires any touch at all. I finally drew her closer.

“I put on the blue shirt,” I reminded her softly. She reached up in slow motion to finger the collar, lifting her face to ask for a kiss.

“So you did.”

We took the Ducati out to Renesmee and Jacob’s place.  It was still running like it had when it was new… better, actually.  Rosalie had kept up her usual regimen, and I had made a few adjustments myself.  This had to be the best bike I had ever owned, and I had owned quite a few over the years.  It handled “like a dream,” as Rosalie liked to put it, and as a scrambler, it couldn’t be beat.

I had never much liked riding inside a regular vehicle.  Everything was too cramped, too crowded, and far too loud and smelly.  And if you wanted to go off road, then what?  Motorcycles were as close as I’d ever get to being on horseback again.  Give me a vehicle that springs to life at the lightest touch.  That leaves me feeling free, leaves the stink of the machinery far behind.  There wasn’t much to be done about the noise, but the Ducati purred like a cougar, and that was good enough for me.

I’d tried the real thing a couple of times—riding a horse—once when I was new and once after switching to animal blood.  The first attempt went pretty badly, since I was still so wild.  The horse spooked almost immediately, which made me all the more desperate to make it work.  It went downhill from there, ending in a classic newborn temper tantrum that left me with a dead horse, two dead “siblings,” and a lot of explaining to do.

I decided to try again back in the seventies when I was out alone one day.  According to Peter, my scent had mellowed somewhat by the time he and Charlotte first met the family in ’69.  His theory was that the animal diet was diluting my scent along with my strength… according to him, a sure sign of a bad end to come.   Of how it just wasn’t meant to be.  Well, I hadn’t noticed myself smelling any different, and even if I did, Carlisle had all kinds of hypotheses about how our scents worked themselves out physiologically.  It wasn’t necessarily the blood.  Regardless, I figured that if Peter was right, then I might have better luck with the horse thing.  

So I tried again.  I even waited until the clouds had winked out the direct sunlight, just in case that had been part of the problem before. I took my time inching closer, and at first it seemed all right, but when I was within twenty feet it started sidestepping away.  Every time I moved, it moved.  I finally gave up and made a jump for it.  For a few exciting rodeo moments I thought it was going to work out, but it didn’t.  The horse calmed down, but its heart rate was dangerously high, and it was shivering in terror.  Never mind going anywhere.  I finally took pity on the poor thing and made myself scarce.  

Alice had never said anything about it. I still didn’t know if she had been watching right then.  But I had told her, back in that first couple of years alone together, how much I missed riding.  She hadn’t really understood.  How could she?  It really was a shame, though.  What I wouldn’t give to ride again.  To fly past the horizon with the feel of the wind in my hair… the soft drumbeat of hooves the only sound in the whole world.  To feel that synergy my horse Patch and I had felt in my human days, how we would become one in a sense, almost reading each other’s thoughts, whether we were saving each other’s lives in battle or just racing toward the sunset. The friendship, even.  Many of my most vivid human memories were of Patch: bringing him into the world just as the mare died, riding alone or with the others, or whispering my worries and dreams to him in the moonlight when the rest of my regiment was asleep.

I had asked Maria, after that first attempt, if she thought we could transform horses.  She said she had tried changing a couple animals before, but that it hadn’t worked.  It had been of our friendlier conversations, laughing over the possibilities: red-eyed horses leaping over buildings, cute little rabbits who could take down a human, wrestling matches with vampire alligators, things like that.   But the bottom line was, I’d never ride again, and that was a hard blow.  

“You’re doing that on purpose, aren’t you?” Alice scolded me, anxiously holding herself out to the right as I took a curve at an ungodly speed.  I guess my reminiscing had been playing itself out.  I laughed and gunned it into the next curve.  She shrieked and leaned out in the opposite direction—as if her weight would do anything!  She wasn’t scared of going off the cliff or wrecking the bike; she was afraid I’d ruin her outfit before Renesmee got to see it.  But she loved it, too.  We both did.

“Maybe,” I admitted, not at all sorry.  This was as close as I’d ever get to my wish: even more than the riding itself, this was what I wanted.  To feel her snug behind me as I rode, gripping her slender arms around me, lining her legs up with mine as we explored whatever was over the next hill.  To feel her pressing closer when she decided to get scared, even shrieking in my ear to slow down when we both knew she wanted me to go faster.

I finally left the road to cut the last corner off our trip, earning myself another round of scolding when the mud finally found us.  I thought, for just a second, about risking the little ridge off to the west that would give us a particularly beautiful view of Renesmee’s property, but it really was too steep and too muddy today.  I didn’t want to push my luck, particularly when it came to muddying The Outfit, because there’d be hell to pay.  It was the latest of Alice’s creations that would be kicking off her new online boutique.  Renesmee was only the website manager, but that didn’t stop her from chattering over designs with her boss.

This was the first time Renesmee and Jacob had lived apart from the family.  When they had first married back in Oregon, Esme had presented them with a cottage that was the twin of the new one she had built for Edward and Bella. But when we had moved here to Colorado they had decided to live a little closer to town than we cared to, and it was obvious they wanted a little more space from everyone.  Jacob, especially, had been itching to open his own garage. Half his customers were from out of town anyway, bringing their rusty old classics for restoration, but he still preferred that small-town feel of having plenty of business on a first-name basis.  

We slowed as we passed the row of farms next to theirs.  The air was filled with the rich aromas of growing crops and animals, as well as the accompanying humans.  I swallowed the venom, reminding myself that I had gone almost twenty years now… a new record.  Besides, I didn’t think Renesmee would appreciate me snacking on her neighbors. She and Jacob were actually friends with them.

Her property finally came into view.  They had bought an abandoned farm at the end of the road, situated just past the end of the pavement.  Easy directions for the human guests to remember, and it was less than a quarter mile from the edge of the woods.  I took a deep sniff over toward the trees to see what my dinner might be, but the farm smells were too overwhelming.  To say nothing of the ripe stink of werewolf.  My longing to visit the next-door-neighbors to borrow a cup of blood was gone instantly.  

The buildings seemed to be in pretty good shape, thanks to Esme, no doubt.  Alice and I were the last ones to come out here.  We hadn’t meant to wait so long, but whenever we had tried to plan a visit, things had kept coming up.  But they usually came over to see everyone at once anyway.

I wondered what this surprise was.  I wasn’t usually the one getting presents; everyone knew I didn’t like collecting useless junk.  Knowing Renesmee, it was probably a trip to see some little piece of history she had discovered: a preserved 19th-century log cabin, a little out-of-the-way museum, maybe something to do with one of the Native American tribes that used to live here.  

Renesmee and I had a special bond, going back to her second year.  I hadn’t known what to do with her when she was a baby, and truth be told, I was still watchful for something to go wrong.  She was all kinds of unnatural.  Each time she had one of those impossible growth spurts, physical or mental, my instincts had shivered even as I smiled along with everyone else… and I wasn’t the only one.  We were well past the danger of Bella giving birth to a monster, but that didn’t mean everything would be smooth sailing from then on out, especially when it came to her self-control.  But like the others, I was consistently blown away by how well things were going. There would be problems later on when she hit age six, but nothing outrageous.

Still, in that first year, I hadn’t interacted with her too much.  I wasn’t really the dolls-and-tea-party type of uncle, even if those tea parties including giggly recitations of Georgian-era literature. And she had changed a bit after the confrontation with the Volturi; nearly having your whole family executed because of your existence will do that to a kid.  She wasn’t afraid of me after that, exactly, but my scars were an uncomfortable reminder that I had once belonged to the darker side of the vampire world… the one she had brushed a little too closely against.  I often caught her staring at them.  And though I tried not to do it, she had sometimes caught me hanging back when the others gathered close and fussed and cooed over her latest stroke of genius.  I think she knew that I was generally a little less safe than the others, even then.

But she had also won my heart, there was no denying it.  Ever since meeting Alice, my life had been one of good surprises, and the fact that my niece could even exist was just the latest one.  But it was more than that; she seemed to have a way of thinking and feeling that full vampires didn’t.  I could sometimes feel her backtracking as she soaked up new knowledge, so easily rearranging her opinions and feelings about things.  She belonged in so many different worlds all at once… it gave her a unique ability to see different perspectives and react accordingly, and I admired that.  That, more than anything, was what finally put me at ease when it came to her future. Renesmee seemed to notice the change, and began asking me to do little things with her: teach her to play chess, explain a word in a book she was reading, come hunting when it was just her and Bella.  That last one was a little sad, because I could feel the anxiety behind her request, but I was happy to grant it.  And there was something irresistible about a kid of any species tugging on your shirtsleeve, silently asking you to bend down so she could ask you a question via her telepathic gift.  

Then one evening, when we happened to be alone in the living room, I had caught her studying me in that tilted-head puzzlement that all our kind tended towards.  I asked her what was on her mind, and, after a few moments of thought and indecision, she said she had been wondering if I had owned any slaves back when I was human.

I was a little taken aback, because it was a topic that didn’t come up often.  History was certainly one of my favorite pastimes, and we were all old enough for our own memories to qualify as “history,” so there was often plenty of chatter in the house about various eras and countries and movements and things.  There were some taboo items, based on personal prerogative and on the fact that there was a child listening now.  My participation in the Civil War wasn’t really one of them, but by this point it had all been said, and the others had usually tiptoed around the messier parts of my past. I didn’t see the point, but it made them more comfortable, so I let it be.  Carlisle was usually the one I was discussing history at length with anyway, and those discussions were usually theoretical.

So I was impressed, as adults often are with children, that she had skipped right over the rules and flat out asked me what she wanted to know.  I responded in kind, launching into an hour-long lecture about cultural incapacity and its ugly role in American history… and in my own.  She listened without interruption, soaking it all in until Edward finally came downstairs, radiating disapproval and telling Renesmee it was past her bedtime.

“She's just a child,” he muttered under his breath when she had gone upstairs to tell everyone goodnight. “Couldn’t you have toned it down a bit?”

“She’s never been just a child,” I shot back, loud enough for her to hear.  “Give her some credit.”

I had officially won Renesmee’s trust that night: trust that I wouldn’t baby her like the others did sometimes, at least when it came to answering her questions.  Whenever she realized that something was being kept from her, or felt smothered by the village that was raising her, I was quick to take her side.  Sometimes, in her older years, I was the one to find her when she had run off for a cry, to sit in companionable silence until she was ready to talk, if she wanted to.   When it was a true matter of safety, I would sometimes turn traitor to the cause, but I was usually forgiven.

Back in the months that had followed after that first evening lecture, Renesmee’s play-learning evolved into more organized studies.  Each member of the family, and occasionally some of the Quileutes, took over the tutoring in various subjects: science with Carlisle, art with Alice, literature with Bella, and so on.  I took on history and sociology.  That second year of her life—our last in Forks—was a special time for the family, where most of us physically retreated from the human world to focus on what was truly important.  

But that time also brought us closer to the human world, in a way, as we all scrambled to more fully understand the subjects we were supposedly experts in.  I had already enjoyed reading about world history, but now I was obliged to get caught up and take more than a passing interest in current affairs for her sake.  And while I still couldn’t muster much enthusiasm beyond the theoretical for myself, it was a wonder to watch her sponge-like little mind unfold and open to understand the larger world she lived in.  To help form that understanding… help prepare her to become a part of that world when the time was right.  Because it was soon obvious that Renesmee would have both the freedom and the desire to move freely out in that world, and to truly be a part of it in her own way. She would always be a part of the family, and in some ways the center of that family, but she was also half-human. She belonged in their world as much as she did in ours.  Even now, she was just beginning to spread those wings.  The property she and Jacob had taken, technically in town but on the edge, was a pretty accurate representation of that commencement.

“Hey guys!” she called from the front door as we walked up.  She leapt off the porch and dashed up to meet us, her Edward-colored curls bouncing to keep up with her.  I smiled to feel her unique love and stood back while she and Alice did their usual high-pitched fussing over hair, clothes, etc., then I got my hug.  She was being careful not to touch my skin.  She squeezed me an extra second, then pulled away with a mischievous grin.  “We’ve got a surprise for you, Jazz.”

“For me?” I echoed, feigning a double take.

“Liar,” she pouted, turning to Alice.  “You told him, didn’t you?”

Alice shook her head, glaring up at me.  “No, but he did weasel it out of me that the surprise was from you.”

“Shame,” Renesmee scolded me, sliding over to Alice’s side in conspiracy.  “I think we should make him wait just for that, don’t you?”

“No way,” Alice protested. “You know I can’t keep a secret this big for very long.”

Now they really had me interested.  A quick trip to a historical site didn’t qualify as a big surprise.  I reached for Renesmee’s hand to sneak a peek into her mind, moving slowly enough for her to dart away if she chose, which she did.

“Oh no you don’t! Dinner first.  JAKE!” she called back toward the barn.  Alice and I followed her over to where Jacob was just closing up shop.  I recognized Esme’s handiwork, since she had worked on the blueprints and sketches back at home when she had been restoring the barn.  Jacob closed the hood of a sparkling black Mustang and raised a grimy hand in greeting.

“Hey bloodsuckers,” he called out cheerfully.

“Well, if it isn’t the family dog,” I called back, grinning.  We exchanged our usual nods—our interspecies version of a high five.  No point in getting smellier than we had to.

“So what do you think?” he asked, wiping off his hands and joining us out in the wide driveway.  

“Good country.  Seems like the perfect spot,” I answered, nodding over toward the woods.  “Are you getting enough business way out here?”

“It’s slow,” he admitted, glancing sheepishly out at the empty parking spaces Esme had delegated to Emmett during the renovation.  “But I’m just getting started, and half my customers so far are from out of town anyway. There’s an old run-down body shop in town, so I’m not trying to step on any toes.  So,” he added, waggling his eyebrows. “Figured it out yet?”

“You’re in on this too?”

“Everyone’s in on it,” he teased, wrapping a meaty arm around Renesmee’s shoulders as she and Alice caught up.  She was buzzing with excitement now, just like Alice was.  Even Jacob was eager to get this going. “C’mon, let’s hunt.” He gave his bride a peck on the cheek and disappeared around the back of the barn, taking off his shirt as he went. Renesmee watched after him for a moment, braiding her hair into a quick rope down her back and tying it off.  She seemed happy.  I hadn’t realized how much I had missed having her, and even Jacob, around.  

We sprinted for the woods, joined a moment later by the enormous russet-red wolf that had truly earned a place in the Cullen family.  Renesmee somersaulted through the air to land on his back, and off they went in their own direction.  Alice and I shared a nostalgic smile, glad to see that some things hadn’t changed.

Alice didn’t feed; she was too worked up.  I made short work of a black-tailed deer, just enough to take the edge off in case the surprise involved human company.  Instead of burying the corpse I let out a shrill whistle, letting Jacob know where I was in case he wanted to have the meat.  He showed up in less than a minute, wolfing down the biggest chunks while Alice and I gave him some space.  When Renesmee found us and the carcass was buried, we returned to the farm, taking our time while Jacob went ahead to change.  It was a cloudy afternoon with a strong breeze coming down from the hills.  

“Over here,” Renesmee said once Jacob was back, steering us toward the town. But we slowed to a stop as soon as we hit the next farm.  The strong scent of horse overpowered the other smells, and no wonder; the back of their property was outlined with electrical fencing designed to keep in the residents. I counted five horses grazing contentedly, and was pretty sure there were at least three more non-human heartbeats coming from the stables.  “They’re boarders,” Renesmee explained, going off to the right to follow the fencing. The horses perked up as one by one they noticed our presence.  Two of them shied almost immediately, heading to the spot farthest away.

Renesmee took a running leap over the fence, motioning for us all to follow her. “It’s all right, they’re not home.”

Two of the three remaining horses got pretty upset to see and smell a line of monsters jumping into their backyard.  But I almost didn’t care; it just felt so… right, to be standing here inside the fence and the cloud of horsey scent, hearing the soft hoofbeats on the grass and dirt.  

“They look well cared for,” I murmured, running my hand along a stretch of real railroad tie fence that ran to the main gate.  The weathered wood felt familiar.  I could never live this close to humans… but what I wouldn’t give to have this next door.  Maybe this was why Renesmee had chosen this particular property?  She had always loved animals in a little-girl kind of way. Her room had gone through all kinds of phases: horse posters, unicorn figurines, intricate butterfly drawings, a dozen stuffed wolves, you name it.  She had gone through dozens of pets, half of which had somehow ended up living at the main house.  When she was five and visited the Amazon Coven, she had come back and redone her room into a mini-rainforest, complete with wildlife.  When she tired of our history lessons she had always pestered me for stories about my adventures with Patch.  I had to make most of them up, since I’d run out of real ones so soon. I could definitely see her picking this place just for the horses next door.

Alice tugged at my arm gently.  “Let’s take a closer look.”

I shook my head.  “Won’t work, darlin’.  They’re like deer; our scent is just too much for them.  If we keep still for a while they might get back to grazing.”

We held still for several minutes, and sure enough, the horses timidly came back out.  There was one who had stood his ground the whole time, though he had also been the farthest away to begin with.  He actually meandered closer as he grazed, seemingly unimpressed by our intrusion.  

“That’s a brave one,” I said softly, pointing him out to the others.

“Yeah,” Renesmee said.  Then she held out her hand toward him.  “Here, Thunder.  C’mere boy…”

And that horse came, just as calm as you please.  He trotted right up to her and nuzzled her hand like he was looking for a treat. She scratched under his chin, smiling back at me.  

I let out a low whistle.  “I don’t believe it.  I knew animals were a little easier around you, but this…”

“Oh, we’re old friends,” she said with a sparkle in her eye.  The feeling of eagerness that had been bouncing around between her, Alice, and Jacob spiked suddenly.  “Why don’t you come say hello?”

“I wish I could, Ness.  But I’ve tried before.”

Alice tugged at my arm again, harder this time.  “I know you have.  Come on.”

I didn’t want to break the fence, so I let me pull me forward.  Thunder shied a little as we drew closer, but he didn’t jump away like he should.

“Take it slow,” Jacob suggested.

I didn’t understand it.  We inched closer, and Thunder was alert and watchful, but he just didn’t seem to be afraid at all.  Soon I was standing right in front of him, his big dark eyes staring right into mine from under long lashes.  I slowly reached up and laid my hand on his neck.  He shivered once, flicking his tail, but stayed still.  In fact, he seemed to lose interest in me altogether, snorting over toward Renesmee as if to scold her for the treat sham.

“I think he likes you,” Alice pronounced with authority.  I just shook my head in wonder, stroking the warm, shining coat.  He was a little smaller than the Saddlebreds and Walkers that had been so popular back in my day, but he was broad and well-muscled… a glistening seal brown all over, with just one white sock.  I dared to reach even higher, and he lowered his head obligingly so I could rub his forehead.  His huge heart thudded on without a hitch.  I let my fingers tangle in his forelock, scratching him between the ears like I used to do with Patch.  I turned to Renesmee.

“How…?”

She shrugged, but she was beaming inside and out.  “I guess when a horse grows up next door to a vampire hybrid and a werewolf, he’s kind of over the scent thing. I’ll explain more later, Jazz. Why don’t you take him for a ride?”

I dropped my hand.  “Now that’s—”

“Would you stop looking a gift horse in the mouth?” Jacob grunted.  “Go get the damn saddle.”

“Second one from the right,” Renesmee added.  “And you’ll want to look in the cupboard just overhead.”

“It won’t work,” I insisted.

“Yes it will,” Alice laughed.  “And we have all afternoon, and then some.”  She felt truly confident, and full of relief and happiness as she watched me. Unbelievable.  

I ran my hand down his neck once more, then gently took hold of the rope bridle. He didn’t budge.

“Stables, Thunder,” Renesmee said softly.  “Go on now.”

It was like magic.  He shook his head once in disapproval, but he didn’t really try to shake me off.  He came easily, nodding and looking back at the other horses.  They moved further away as we passed.

I didn’t want to take him inside, where my scent would be too much in the still air.  As I had expected, the two horses that had been hiding in their stalls took one sniff and headed out to pasture.  Still, they hadn’t really bolted, and Thunder himself seemed right at home, having followed me halfway inside.  I was the one who was overwhelmed by the scent, not him; the air was heavy with molding hay and horse manure. It made me feel like the sixteen-year-old human I had been so very long ago, standing in the stables of my own ranch.  The saddle was a stranger to me, though… too many cinches, the skirt was barely there, and I couldn’t begin to make sense of the rigging.

“Well, Thunder… it’s just you and me.  Let’s see how you feel about this.”  The bridle and saddle felt far too light and flexible to my hands, though I supposed that could be due to my strength.

Thunder didn’t seem interested.  I opened the worn-out cupboard above the empty hook and almost laughed to find a box of sugar cubes.  I wondered if the humans really kept this here, or if Renesmee had taken it straight out of my stories.  I stashed a handful in my shirt pocket and held one out to Thunder.  He lipped it out of my fingers without hesitation.

“Good boy,” I murmured, feeling a knot in my throat.  I led him back outside, where the others were watching with big proud smiles, but giving us our space.  It was easy after that, save for my own unfamiliarity with the saddle and the worry that I’d cinch it too tight.  The bridle was easy because there was no bit.  I took a deep breath for good luck and mounted.  

“Told you,” Alice sang under her breath, though I couldn’t tell whether she was talking to me or Renesmee.  

Thunder began moving before I even took the reins. My knees did most of the work, urging him into a light trot out onto the grass.  We cut a wide circle around the pasture, scaring off his stablemates again.  I dug in a little harder on the way back, listening carefully to his pulse to make sure I wasn’t doing anything wrong.  He picked up into a gentle canter without a problem, slowing again as we approached the others.  Renesmee shoved the gate open, gesturing out toward the hills with a flourish.  “It’s okay,” she assured me.  “We’ve taken him out before.”

I shook my head in wonder, urging him forward again.  He hesitated inside the gate for just a second, looking back toward the house like a kid about to steal a cookie.  Then he took off.

I stopped breathing, feeling lost as I tried to catch the rhythm.  For the first time in my life, my vampire body felt heavy and awkward, jarring with the human instincts that were resurfacing. Thunder slowed a bit, fully aware of my difficulty, and scolded me over his shoulder with a long, nickering laugh.  

“Give me a minute,” I said, patting his neck.  “It’s been a while.  A hundred and fifty-four years.”  He nickered again, softer this time.  “That’s very decent of you,” I answered politely.

I let him explore the back fields of Renesmee’s farm as he liked, alternating between a canter and a running walk.  He seemed to know his way around.  I held myself as loose as I could, trying to let him show me what he was used to. We gradually fell into a peaceable rhythm together, and when I felt ready, we turned out into the hills.  I shortened the reins and leaned forward with more pressure.

“Let’s go, Thunder, git up!  Let’s go! Hup!”

He picked up a bit, uncertain, and then we were flying.  I shouted my encouragement, and he whinnied back with joy at the freedom, storming ahead wherever I asked.  I finally let out a whoop of sheer exhilaration, still unable to believe this was happening!  We zigzagged back and forth for a while before taking on the first hill.  He scaled it without effort and ran back down just for fun, then another.  It was absolute heaven to feel the wind in my hair without the sound of an engine… to feel the powerful muscles carrying me forward, connecting with good, solid earth in a staccato drumbeat that sounded like music.

Would he carry Alice as well?  I had to try. I wanted a little more practice first, though, and we still had a good chunk of afternoon left.  We slowed for a rest—he certainly wasn’t used to this much climbing—and found a little stream trickling down between the highest hills. Then we found a little path that wound through the trees leading back down to Renesmee’s place.  

In the years since Alice found me, I had spent innumerable hours in forests all over the world.  It always felt so healing to just bury myself out in nature away from everything, in a place that was so unlike where I had spent the first eighty years as a vampire. To just lose myself in a world that knew neither human nor vampire nor machine, soaking in the smells and sounds of life being quietly lived at its own pace.  I often spent that time with Alice, and sometimes with my brothers, but also alone.  It was a kind of peace that I had never thought to look for as a human, since I had never had any time to go off on my own.  And now, I got to share it with the kind of friend I had missed most of all.

We took our time on the path; Thunder didn’t seem to have come this way before.  We just explored it together, smelling as we went and turning our heads to various sounds. He was a companionable fellow, quick to respond and full of horsey chatter.  I found myself chattering back, falling back into the easy give-and-take I remembered having with Patch.  I didn’t know how often Renesmee and Jacob would like visitors, and I would be at the mercy of the human boarders’ schedule, but I would be back.  That was a shame about the humans; I could just imagine how the light would cut through the morning mist here in these woods during a morning trot.  I’d take whatever I could get, though.  However a horse like this had come to be, it was a miracle not to be wasted.

We galloped back down to Thunder’s farm, sending his stablemates scattering in anxiety again.  I felt an unfamiliar surge of warmth in my chest to see my Alice waiting for me there at the gate, watching me come home to her.  She had climbed up onto the swinging end, perched with her arms folded on the rail and a knowing sparkle in her eyes.  She knew what came next.

But first I swung down and paid my respects to my new friend, giving him a vigorous rub on his sweaty neck and mumbling the nonsense language that was starting to come back to me.  We looked into each other’s eyes for a bit and then he jammed his mouth into my chest, sniffing out the sugar cubes.

“Hey, okay!” I laughed, giving him his treat.  Renesmee and Jacob finally came up.

“Alice said you got lost in the woods,” she teased, reaching up to give Thunder some love of her own.  “Do you like your surprise?”

I shook my head.  “I still can’t believe it.  This is something I never thought I’d have again.”  I burst into a huge grin that spread quick through the group, and grabbed my monster niece for a real hug and an outpouring of gratitude.  I finally caught a glimpse of the memories she had kept secret earlier: a spindly foal that could only be Thunder, nestled snug in his hay with Renesmee only inches away.

“Even when he was small?” I asked.  “He wasn’t afraid?”

“He was born a couple weeks after we moved in,” Jacob explained.  “We actually got the idea from Garrett. He’s never tried it himself, but he had heard of vampire back in his day that raised a horse from birth.  You just have to expose them really young and keep it up, and they get used to it. Creatures of habit.”

“Still… even if he was used to you two, I don’t see how he’s not upset by a full vampire.”

“That’s because he’s been around them before,” Alice said.  “I haven’t come around, because I was afraid you’d catch the scent on me, but Emmett and Esme spent a lot of time over here when they were working on the house.  Carlisle’s been out here twice, and of course Bella and Edward.”

“And they brought some of your clothes a couple of times,” Renesmee added. “So he could get to know you, too.” She looked out at the other horses. “They’ve gotten used to us, sort of, since we spent so much time with Thunder.  But he’s yours.”

I blinked.  “What?”

“Surprise!” she said gaily.  

“Didn’t you hear me call it a gift horse earlier?” Jacob snorted.  “Listen, you can leave him here until you’ve got something ready back nearer the main house.”

“It won’t take long,” Alice promised, squeezing my arm.  “Esme’s been working on sketches of stables for months. She’s just waiting for you to come back and pick out what you want.”

My throat finally closed, full of emotion. I laid a hand back up on Thunder’s flank, feeling the warmth and listening to the heavy heartbeat.  He was mine.

“All right,” Jacob said, looking at his watch.  “Alice said they’d be home at 8:32, so you’ve still got an hour and half. Just put everything back where you found it.”

Once I found enough voice to mumble another thank you, Renesmee and Jacob went back home.  When she looked back I raised my hand in farewell, resting back against the gate and pulling Alice into my arms.  She leaned her head back against my chest, and for a little while we just watched Thunder stroll around the yard, unsure what to do with himself.

“Where to, ma’am?” I finally asked, turning her around.  She smiled up at me.

“You know.  And yes, it’ll work.”

I would have to ask her, later, what her role had been in all of this. Right now we had a dream to fulfill. I mounted again, reaching down to “help” Alice up.  She was actually pretty tense at first; all the visions in the world hadn’t prepared her for the feeling of sitting a horse.  As far as either of us knew, she had never done it before.  

“Hi, Thunder,” she whispered, stroking his flank.  

“Hold on to me,” I cautioned her.  “It’d be so easy to break his ribs if we’re not careful.”  She wrapped her arms around my waist, and I picked up one of her hands for a quick kiss.  “Ready?”

“Ready.”

I dug in and we were off, straight out the gate without hesitation.  Alice gasped, wrapping her arms tighter, but she kept herself quiet.  This was heaven, to have her with me like this.  I’d imagined it so many times, but this was even better.  It felt like I was finally able to let her see this part of me… to have her share in it.  The three of us sailed effortlessly through the tall grass toward the hills, rising and falling in silent unison as Thunder’s heart and hooves beat on.

Alice was beginning to relax.  I grinned to myself and reached back to grab her mid-gallop, swinging her around and forward into my lap.  She shrieked in surprise, latching onto me for dear life as Thunder reared up in response to the inhuman sound.  

“Steady there!”  I fought him back down, holding Alice with one arm as I managed the reins.  

“You did that on purpose!”

“Maybe…”

I pulled hard right, aiming for the ridge I had spotted earlier.  “Let’s see if he can manage this one…” I said mainly to myself.  Alice’s eyes glazed over for just a second and then she glared lovingly at me, relaxing and letting me hold her bridal-style as we began the rough climb. At least the mud was a little wet still; it gave Thunder’s hooves something to sink into.  We jostled and weaved our way up to the top, finally cresting the last bump and coming to a stop.

“Do you have any idea how amazing this is?” I said softly as we took in the vista below us.  The sun was growing big and orange as it sank toward the western horizon.  “To have this again… to have you here with me.”

“I can feel it,” she said, laying her hand on my heart.  I wasn’t surprised; my happiness was too big for just one heart at the moment.  I held her close and closed my eyes until I felt Thunder begin to shift impatiently.

I lifted Alice up into sitting astride, this time reaching around her with both arms to hold the reins.  She relaxed and lay back against my chest as we began our descent.  Her love burst over me in waves,  and mine wrapped around her, binding us together. This was meant to be… it always had been.  Just another piece of destiny she had taught me to believe in.  When we were ready, I laid a kiss on her hair and called out for Thunder to let it loose.  Soon we were galloping again, racing down onto the plain and out into the sunset.

Disney Storybits : Mickeytaro & The Proposing Plan

Another addition to my "Mickey-taro" idea that I did before! To repeat, it's a take on the Japanese tale of Momotaro/Peach Boy. Mickey is no bigger than a peach bit, and is on a journey to get the Lucky Hammer, a magical item that can make anyone and anything any size! Along the way he befriends Horace and Panchito who want to aide him on his quest. Things get complicated when the hammer is in the possession of the beautiful Princess Minnie, who refuses to give its location.

In this storybit, Panchito thinks he may have found a way around that little problem.

Panchito Pistoles was not a braggart, and was often called a humble man. Whenever he did brag, it was almost always about his friends, preferring to highlight the amazing things they'd done. But tonight was a little different – tonight he thought he was rather brilliant, and in the future he planned to tell everyone the story of this success. So far his plan had gone off without a hitch.

Step one, convince the princess.

“Mickey wants to speak to me in private?” Minnie had repeated the request, confused. “What do you mean? He can talk to me anytime he wants. He's a dear friend, you all are.” This conversation had taken place half an hour ago, and her highness had been on her way to her bedroom. As a result she had started to undo some of the pins and ribbons in her long, lovely black hair.

“No no, good lady, this is a very private talk he wants to have.” Panchito lowered his voice to a whisper, hoping to make her understand quickly before he was caught. “Mickey has some special things he wishes to tell you.”

She'd yet to wash off the layers of make-up on her face, yet it was easy to tell the difference between the blush that was from powder, and the blush that came naturally. Minnie reddened and reddened more with every passing second. “Oh, my.” She finally said, eyes cast down demurely. “W-well...I suppose it would be rude to deny him such a request.”

“¡Excelente!” Panchito clapped his hands together. “He'll be waiting for you in the gardens in a half hour! Don't keep him waiting!” Although he doubted she would, judging by that shy yet eager smile on her dainty lips. With the step completed, Panchito suddenly raced off to complete the next one.

Step two, distract the lady-in-waiting.

“I don't see why I gotta do this.” Horace had huffed, crossing his arms and leaning on the hallway wall.  This conversation had taken place ten minutes ago, and with every wasted minute Horace was unknowingly threatening to destroy the entire scheme. “Why can't you do it? She's a mean one, that Clarabelle! She's not gunna wanna be seen with me!”

“Oh please,” Panchito interrupted, trying to keep his cool. “I've seen the way she looks at you. It has to be you! Otherwise she'll find out where Minnie is, and the whole thing will be ruined! Don't you care about Mickey's happiness?”

Horace rolled his eyes, but sighed heavily. “Of course I do.”

“And don't you want him to get the Lucky Hammer?”

“Of course I do-”

“Then you find Clarabelle and keep her distracted as long as possible! For the sake of our friend Mickey! ¡Vamonos!” For extra emphasis, Panchito gave a kick to Horace's leg, and the disgruntled horse trotted down the hall to find the equally disgruntled servant. Horace was stubborn, but like Panchito, he'd give anything for Mickey's wish to come true.

Which left step three, which was telling Mickey, which he'd done five minutes ago.

“A plan to get the Lucky Hammer?” Mickey was intrigued but also wary. “Aw c'mon, Panchito, you heard the princess! She can't tell any of us where it is until the Demon King is defeated. No way, no how.”

“Yes way, yes how!” Panchito used his hand so Mickey could hop off of the window he'd been cleaning and ride on to the floor. “Trust me, Mickey, if this works – and it will work! - you will have that hammer in no time! And then you will be normal sized, and your Papa will love you, and all will be well! Just do everything I say, and there's no way you can lose!”

It didn't take long to convince Mickey, who had dreamed of being bigger than a peach pit for all his life. He supposed even if this plan, whatever it was, didn't work out then there would be no harm done. Besides, he enjoyed spending time with Princess Minnie. She was easy to talk to, always keen to hear his stories, and had a heart bigger than any regular-sized person's. He entertained the notion of having feelings for her, but tried to reject that thought soon after – not only was he a mere commoner, but what woman in her right mind would want to have a lover who fit in the palm of her hand? She deserved better.

And so Mickey went to the gardens, although he wondered why Panchito had said to “do everything” as he said if he was going to run away at the last minute. He dismissed it as another one of Panchito's overenthusiastic oddities and walked into the tall grass. Mickey wasn't sure where exactly she wanted to meet up, as a simple garden for her was an entire landscape for him, but as he walked deeper in he found a familiar clearing – the same spot where he first met Princess Minnie. But now it was covered in a thick, silk blanket, a golden candle-holder in the middle holding up two flickering red candles. Petals of various colors had been strewn about.

Mickey was immediately suspicious.

“Oh my goodness. Did you do all this?” came the sweet voice of the princess, who was now walking into sight. Instead of washing off her make-up and undoing her hair as she was supposed to before going to bed, she'd added on even more touches to her face and her hair was tied up in even more elegant curls. It was as if instead of donning the look a princess should have, she'd gone the extra mile to make sure she was looking as beautiful as she could make herself. She'd made an effort – which made Mickey's heart jump into his throat, until he realized what it was she'd asked.

“Uh,” Mickey struggled in his throat, looking around. “I guess? In a way?” This had to be Panchito's doing, but what the rooster was doing, Mickey couldn't guess.

“It's lovely.” Minnie smiled, sitting down on her knees and smoothing down her flowing robes, this one white with a pattern of red roses stitched on, creating the illusion that the petals were fluttering with every move she made. “I hope you didn't go to too much trouble.”

“It wasn't any trouble at all.” Literally. What was he getting into? “That's, uh, that's a nice kimono you got on. Ain't seen it before.”

“It's for special occasions,” Minnie replied, her eyes timidly turning away for a moment, hiding her lips behind her sleeve. Mickey's mind reeled - special occasion? Why was this a special occasion? Weren't they just there to talk? “I...I was told you have some special things you wanted to tell me.”

“Uhhh.” Mickey stretched the word out as long as he could, trying to decipher whatever was being presented to him. As his eyes bounced all over, he noticed a rustling in a nearby cherry blossom tree. At first, worry seized his body, and he made a motion to grab the needle of a sword on his belt – was it one of the Demon King's minions?

Nope – it was Panchito, who now hung upside down from one the branches, holding up a long piece of paper with hastily written words. Say “you're so beautiful!”

Mickey blinked rapidly in honest confusion. “You're...so beautiful?” He said out loud, and it took him half a second to realize what he'd actually said and who he'd actually said it to.

Minnie giggled, oblivious to what was happening in the tree or the panic flowing through Mickey's head. “You're always so sweet, Mickey. I've had so many people give me compliments, but it's... just different coming from you. Like you see me as Minnie, and not just the princess.”

“Oh. Well. Um.” Mickey fumbled, trying not to watch Panchito write something else on a new layer of paper. “I think we'd be friends even if you weren't the princess. You've always been real nice to me.” Okay, so they were complimenting each other. It was nice, but how was this going to get the Lucky Hammer? Minnie wasn't going to reveal its location over idle flattery.

… Right?

“I feel the same way!” Minnie chirped, her enthusiasm growing while she lost some of her proper royal demeanor. “Size, titles, none of it matters. The friendship we have is so much stronger than that. You always know how to cheer me up, and make me feel like a real person.”

Did he really have such an influence over her? Mickey momentarily pushed aside the thoughts of the hammer, more than happy to indulge in this time of sweetness. “I only give as good as I get, Princess! You make me feel teen feet tall! Everyone else always takes pity on me or tries to do things they think I can't do. But you let me try stuff. You let me...” Panchito was finished writing. “Um... You let me...”

Minnie waited patiently for him to finish the sentence, but Panchito had gone on a different tangent. Say “I want to be with you!”

Be with her? But he was with her already, they were right there, talking and -

And then the entire idea of the plan hit Mickey with the force of an exploding mountain. THIS was the plan to get the hammer?! He was supposed to – supposed to – seduce the princess?! Was Panchito out of his mind?!

“Mickey?” Minnie asked gently, lowering her head slightly to get a better look at her companion. “Is everything all right?” The revelation of Panchito's plan had caused Mickey's entire face to go as red as the roses on Minnie's kimono, and his tiny body trembled with great force.

“No!” Mickey shouted, intending to tell Panchito before correcting himself. “I mean, yes! I mean, that is, uh, I, um...” He wanted to make plans to kill the rooster in his sleep, but this matter had to be resolved first. “I don't know what I was thinking.” He struggled to make his voice stern, hoping that he'd make himself clear to Panchito, who was now pointing at the same words over and over in an attempt to make Mickey say them. “I must have been thinking something crazy. I must have hit my head. I was thinking about things that would never, ever happen in a million years.” He finished with a curt glare to Panchito. The rooster stuck his tongue out.

Minnie's body sunk with every negative thought, oblivious to the plan being made and defied all around her. Had Mickey been paying better attention, he might have picked up that Minnie thought of him just as fondly as he thought of her – perhaps even more. It was why Panchito had been so confident of the entire idea in the first place – he'd noticed the wistful gazes Minnie had whenever she looked upon Mickey, the sheer delight in her voice whenever she spoke of him, and the daily excuses she thought up so she could spend more time at his side. But being a princess, and a lady, it was only appropriate for the man to make the first move, so to speak.

Which wasn't all that helpful when the man in question had a mixture of self-loathing and obliviousness.

Mickey was tempted to pinch his arm to see if this was a dream, but he convinced himself that if this was a dream, Panchito wouldn't have been it, especially not obnoxiously giving two thumbs up. Mickey's heart pounded in his chest, a hard drumming that he would've believed the entire kingdom could hear. There was no way Panchito's ridiculous idea had worked – so, somehow, someway, he must have stolen her heart before this night happened. How he did it, Mickey couldn't fathom or guess. Around Minnie he was simply Mickey – nothing more and nothing less.

And to be honest, he hadn't a clue about his future. He had refused to go home until he was of normal size, and if he wouldn't ever be normal sized, then where was he to go until the end of his days? A lump formed in Mickey's throat. He missed his parents deeply – but he also loved Minnie deeply. The offer was more than tempting. He couldn't possibly give her what she deserved, yet she didn't care. It was a strange sort of happy mindboggling.

If he had nothing to lose anymore, then, well, why not?

“I like you.” Mickey blurted out, and regretted it only because of how childish it sounded. One didn't answer a potential marriage proposal with “like”. It was just the first words that popped into his head and had the power to leave his mouth. “I like you a lot.” As if that was any better! Then again, it wasn't as if he'd ever practiced or rehearsed for such a moment, since said moment had always bordered on the impossible in his mind. “You don't really...have to worry about all that happiness stuff. I'm happy enough when we're...together, y'know? Just being around you makes everything all better. So, you just be you, and I'll just be me. Like we've always done.”

It wasn't a wholly definitive answer, but they were both still young, and Minnie accepted he would need time to think it over. For now, she was greatly pleased by what she had heard. She lifted her hands up and kissed Mickey atop his head – it couldn't be said if her lips had knocked him over, or if Mickey was so struck with lovesick stupor that he fell onto his back. Either way, Minnie giggled, and Panchito believed his plan to be a surefire success.

Chapter 2: Enter Last Son of Krypton A

Breanna Wayne is turning 23 years old. It has been 4 months since Batman fought the Joker. While getting to know someone new at her birthday party, the contraption the media has taken to calling the Batsignal (thanks a lot, Gordon) lights up the sky. In the name of safety, Breanna sends her guests home and dons the cowl—only to run into the Man of Steel himself just a few hours after taking care of the situation. It turns out they’re both looking for the same thing, and Breanna reluctantly agrees to work with him for just this case. This chapter and the next 2 (split up into 6 different postings) will be one story arc.

It was only four months since the Joker had appeared, but Gotham society had already bounced back from their member’s deaths; it wasn’t entirely uncommon for people to go missing or die every once in a while. For Breanna’s 23rd birthday party, she hosted a calm celebration in the form of a gala at Wayne Manor. She and Alfred pored over the guest list for over a week, making sure no one was slighted and the proper amount of media was invited as not reporting press but actual guests. It was with a grimace she acquiesced to having the recently returned Oliver Queen and the not-currently-on-parole Lex Luthor.

“If I didn’t have to keep up appearances…” she muttered under her breath. Walking in a handstand behind her butler, Breanna felt sweat slowly dripping down her back and pooling in her bra strap. Whenever he stopped to dust something she started doing a series of push-ups as quickly as possible.

“But I’m afraid you do, Mistress. Unless you’d like the police and FBI and others still after the identity of Batman to make some obscure connections.”

Breanna grunted and started moving after him as moved from one hallway table to another.

“I still don’t understand the point of Batman versus Batwoman,” she gasped.

Less than gracefully she let herself fall back into a standing position, putting a hand on her hip.

“Why does there need to be a gender? Why can’t I just be the Bat?”

Alfred spared her a wry look before continuing his chore.

“I don’t have an answer to that, but I will say that the need to assign labels that have caused this misgendering your nighttime persona has given you an inkling more safety.”

Breanna clicked her tongue and turned around.

“I’m going to hit the shower, Alfred. When I’m done if you wouldn’t mind helping me get everything laid out for tonight that would be fantastic.”

As she walked back down the hallway—this time on her feet—Alfred called after her.

“Are you wearing the blue dress or the red dress tonight?”

Breanna paused and shrugged, glancing back at him.

“The blue one, I guess.”

He nodded in reply.

The Wayne family had employed only one servant since Martha and Thomas made the decision to stop hosting society events at their family home, and that same servant still continued to be the sole long-term employee. For the sake of the upcoming gala, however, Breanna and Alfred had hired a few chefs and waiters with catering experience and an event planner—Rachael Iverson—who took care of the details Breanna didn’t care about. She did care about security, the food, and the color scheme. As cliché as it was, the heiress' favorite color was blue, the same color as her eyes, without a preference for shade.

She was lucky to have no allergies but knew some of the guests had some food allergies and after contacting each of the invitees she had compiled a list of possible refreshments and the planner took care of the rest. The party itself was relegated to the ballroom and gardens only, and the individuals hired to take care of the decorating showed up just three hours before it was to begin. By then, Breanna and Alfred had made sure that any artifacts associated with her nightlife were carefully hidden or stowed away if not already. Her hair was in a simple bun, still wet from her shower, and she ignored the water slowly dripping down onto the neckline of her t-shirt as she spoke with the dark-skinned woman in charge of the whole party when one of her few true friends attending appeared.

Ever since their first interview, Breanna had corresponded with Lois Lane regularly, exchanging information and the occasional meme as it came across their respective attention. More pen pals than the traditional friend, the two women had arranged to get ready together. Breanna politely excused herself from her conversation and turned to hug the shorter woman. For once she wasn’t in a suit, rather Lois had chosen to wear a pair of worn sweatpants and a t-shirt that had obviously seen better days. Her hair was up in a messy ponytail and her own blue eyes were hidden by a pair of aviator sunglasses that Breanna commented on.

“Clark got them for me for my last birthday,” she explained.

Breanna smiled—she had heard much about Clark Kent and was excited to meet him that night—and gave Lois a quick hug.

“Come on in,” she said, gesturing up the steps of the Manor. Lois followed quickly, pulling a small suitcase behind her. Despite the risks that Alfred had repeated more than once, Breanna had impulsively invited the older woman to spend the night.

“Sorry it’s a bit of a mess, they’re about halfway done getting everything ready.”

Lois pushed her sunglass on top of her head, taking her time to look around the foyer.

“What you call a mess is still impeccable to me, Bre.”

Breanna rolled her eyes.

“Whatever, Lo, come on.”

They went up the main stairs quickly and passed Alfred, who moved out of their way with a slight bow of his head.

“Breanna, Miss Lane.”

“Hi Alfred,” Lois said with a grin.

“I have your things laid out on your bed, Miss Wayne,” he said with a soft smile at his ward. Breanna grinned at him; there was something akin to happiness in her eyes that he had not seen for some time.

“Thank you, Alfred. You’re free to go whenever you like.”

He scoffed and the two women paused to stare at him.

“I am not spending my night off anywhere but my room, as there are frankly too many episodes of Downtown Abbey to catch up on.”

Breanna and Lois turned towards each and began to giggle, watching as Alfred shook his head and walked off as regally as ever.

“He’s certainly a character,” Lois quipped.

Breanna nodded and began leading the way again.

“You would not believe the snark. Sometimes I wish I could just turn him loose on the reporters instead of saying anything: no offense.”

“None taken,” Lois waved her hand.

When they reached Breanna’s spacious room Lois put her suitcase on top of the bed. She began pulling her stuff out as Breanna disappeared into the bathroom. She came out with a small hand towel pressed again the back of her neck, mouth opened as if to say something. She froze when she saw what Lois was holding. Not a dress, though she could see some dark red fabric peeking out. No, it was a large glossy picture of Batman, Gotham’s defender. Lois had an eyebrow raised and her other hand resting on her hip.

“What’s that for?” Breanna asked, recovering quickly.

“I’m not dumb, Bre, you know that. When were you going to tell me?”

Breanna’s eyebrows furrowed in confusion, but she forced a smile.

“Tell you what? That I’m dating the Bat?” She laughed but the seriousness on Lois’ face did not go away.

“A little hard to date yourself but if that’s how you want to play it the fine.” She laid the picture down on top of Breanna’s dress and proceeded to pull out her phone from her pocket. She flicked it open and tapped the screen a few times before walking around the bed.

Lois looked back down at her phone, scrolling a little, and Breanna collapsed in one of her armchairs that faced the room while still providing a view of her balcony.

“You have always voiced your support of the current Commissioner, James Gordon, and the Bat seems to be an ally if not a friend of his. Also, when you were targeted by the Joker a few months ago, Batman did not show up like he did at some of the other victim’s residences.”

Breanna stared at her friend with wide eyes, frozen in the silence before letting her head fall into her empty hand. She rubbed her face while the hand holding the now-wet towel clenched into a fist.

“Is it really that obvious?” she mumbled.

Lois laughed a sharp honking noise, and curled up in the other arm chair.

“Obvious? That took me close to a year to put together, and I never would have thought to except for some of the things you said in our first interview that sounded eerily similar to what others were saying when talking about Batman.”

Breanna glanced at Lois, narrowing her eyes.

Lois gave her a look that screamed “What?” and raised her shoulders.

“I’m an investigative journalist. It’s what I do.”

Breanna fell back into the chair and closed her eyes.

“I know.”

They were both silent, both thinking before Lois shifted her feet to underneath her body.

“I’m not going to tell anyone if that’s what you’re worried about.”

Breanna’s eyes snapped open and Lois felt that something had shifted from the Breanna Wayne she knew to whoever this was in front of her.

“Oh? Why not? It would be the article of the century, better than anything you have ever written.”

Lois pursed her lips and crossed her arms.

“I’d never be able to write anything better, afterward, either. Besides, I think what you’re doing is important and it’s not my place.”

Breanna starred at her for a little bit longer before shoving herself out of the chair. She began to pace, half of her steps in the light from the balcony window-doors, the other half in the shadowed contrast of the wall. It was while she was in the shadow that she stopped, turning to face Lois better.

“I believe you,” she said at last, her voice serious.

Lois rolled her eyes and stood up, putting her hands on her hips again.

“I’m so glad,” she said sarcastically and walked back over to her suitcase. She carefully moved the picture of Batman—of Breanna—to the other side and continued to take out her things for the gala.

“I’m sorry, it’s just…I’m not used to having friends and with this secret I—”

Lois interrupted her.

“It hasn’t been easy making any, I imagine. Not without feeling like you’re lying to them the entire time.”

Breanna nodded and Lois stopped, her hands full of red material.

“The world needs its heroes, and some cities more than most. Gotham wouldn’t know what to do with Superman just like you wouldn’t know what to do with Metropolis. I hope this crusade of yours works out in the end. Gotham could use a little more light.”

Breanna swallowed and nodded. Lois closed her eyes and looked up at the ceiling, taking a deep breath.

“For heaven’s sake, Breanna, look at us. You’re a vigilante, a superhero, at the age of 23 and I’m just a journalist for a newspaper at 26.”

Breanna moved to lean against the edge of her bed, smiling again.

“I wouldn’t say just a journalist. You do have a Pulitzer to your name after all.”

Lois grinned, her blue eyes sparkling and the tension that had been present gone from the room.

“I do, don’t I?”

Bre nodded.

“That’s more than Clark can say.”

There are few people out there who don't know this famous line from the 2008 film that introduced us to the elusive Bryan Mills (Neeson, Schindler's List). It has become iconic along with the character and helped to launch two sequels as well as a television show - as of this past year. Premiering as a mid-season, 10 episode series, Taken garnered mixed reviews but was received well enough to warrant a second, expanded season, which is set to premiere on February 15, 2018.

The premise of the show takes us into Mills' (Clive Standen; Vikings) life long before the first movie takes place. He is young, single and a former Green Beret who gets mixed up with a drug lord named Mejia (Romano Orzari; White House Down). Mejia's ultimate death becomes his obsession after Mills' sister is murdered by the Cartel. Mills, in turn, attracts the attention of a government agent, Cristina Hart (Jennifer Beals; Flashdance) who recruits him to become part of an elite secret CIA team.

Throughout the season, this team takes on special assignments (hence the secrecy) that see them all over the world. Mills barely assimilates into this group but manages to hold his own. The intricacies of their missions don't always work out as planned and at one point the bane of Mills' existence, Mejia, temporarily slips through his grasp only to be once again captured and then killed by Mills. Apparently, this lands Mills in hot water as the season ends.

For some reason the "powers that be" think it is a good idea to take successful movies and make them into television series and occasionally it works but in this case, not so much. To be honest, besides the name and other minor details the show has absolutely nothing to do with the movie. It could be any other "spy" related drama but the higher-ups thought they would just bank on the popularity of the films to garner an audience and while the gamble paid off at first the show doesn't offer enough to sustain it.

The cast was well chosen but without the right material, they just don't get to show off their best. Standen exudes power and charisma on Vikings but there isn't the same level here; though, I don't think that is his fault. Beals is excellent as the woman in control and for me, she is one of the highlights of the show. The rest of the cast is fairly insignificant as many of them won't be returning for Season two (which frankly isn't a good sign). The episodes are simply bland and don't make me want to "tune in next week".

The Blu-ray is high definition video 1080p quality so the scenes have some nice detail to them. However, with the color palette is mainly muted with bluish tones that tend to blur the edges a little more than a brighter color scheme might. The DTS-HD Master audio 5.1 is clean and clear with generally good quality in the surround sound aspect. The disc set offers little in the way of extras other than some bookmarks, a trailer and one four-minute-long behind the scenes feature called Taken: On Set.

If you are hoping for the same fare as you are accustomed to from the movies, then Taken: The Complete First Season One is going to disappoint a little bit. However, if you want something to binge watch with some drama and action then you can pick up this Blu-ray set. Season two will have a mostly new cast and 6 more episodes so we will see how things change down the road.
