Do you have any entry level recommendations for someone looking to learn a bit more about Greek mythology? Iâd love to read up on it but Iâm not sure how to find reputable sources and avoid Americanisation.
I mean, at the risk of sounding crass, you're likely going to run into Americanization no matter what you do because America itself was built on many cultures, especially that of Greek philosophy and storytelling.
Buuut if you mean you wanna read some actual Greek myth content that AREN'T modern American spins on classic tales, Emily Wilson is a popular choice for many people dipping their toes into translated mythology as her translations are both simplistic and concise in their language choices as well as fun in their structure to read both internally and orally (iirc her translations are done in iambic pentameter which is very familiar to anyone who's ever read Shakespeare). I've been working through her translation of The Odyssey, it's been pretty enjoyable :)
I've also heard great things about both Lattimore and Fitzgerald, the latter of whom I will be reading next after I finish Wilson's translation. That said, I haven't read either of their works yet, so take my recommendation of them with grains of salt! (I hope you enjoy them though if you check 'em out! If you beat me to it, let me know how they went!)
OH also, I know it's sorta the opposite of what you're likely looking for as it's VERY influenced by modern contexts, but thanks to another anon I recently got into Destripando la Historia which is a super fun animated Youtube series that retells the stories of various different gods from different mythologies. If you're into stuff of the goofy anime variety, you might enjoy them, it's a Spanish series but you can turn on captions to read the translations! It's super beginner-friendly, it covers a lot of different stories and myths without getting into so much detail that it's overwhelming (but gives you a good kickoff point to start with!) and the songs and animations slap, Afrodita is one of my favorites haha
youtube
Overall the biggest advice I can give you if you're trying to avoid fanfiction-y / "Americanized" retellings is just to cross-reference. If you find a retelling you really like but aren't completely sure of its legitimacy as a functional retelling, keep reading, watching, and learning more. It's a skill like any other, and the more you read, the more you'll be able to pick out what's a legitimate retelling from studied scholars vs. what's fanfiction that you don't need to take too accurately or seriously LMAO
And honestly, nothing wrong with the fanfiction stuff! Mythology, in its very nature, changes over time, it's an inevitability and many of the myths we still draw from today are often derivative in and of themselves from even older versions that pre-existed them (see: Ovid).
it's okay if your introduction to Greek myth is through derivative fanfic, stuff like Disney's Hercules and even Lore Olympus ARE fun to consume for a lot of people and make for a good entry point into learning more about the myths!
What's frustrating - and what I tend to criticize the most here - is when the fanfiction gets advertised / sold as legitimate retellings; when the fanfiction grossly misrepresents the actual mythology and yet tries to claim it as legitimate anyways which results in fanbases that are running around with completely false information claiming it as fact. If you can give the team behind Hercules credit for one thing, their rendition may not be completely accurate, BUT the folks who made it never bragged about how much smarter they were than other people about Greek myth or call themselves "folklorists" when they didn't even have any formal education/training/etc. in it cough like another creator we know cough đ If we want to make a comparison between LO and a Disney film in terms of how it grossly misrepresents the themes and cultural contexts of the original stories it was drawing from... Disney's Pocahontas does exactly that đ
So if you want to avoid any "grossly" Americanized versions of Greek myth that are borderline disrespectful to the stories they're drawing from... yeah, that's usually a pretty indicative red flag LMAO
But outside of those very specific scenarios, just have fun with it, there really is no "right or wrong" way to engage with the mythology if you're simply just wanting to learn more, the beauty of it being mythology is that it's very diverse in its mediums and thus you don't have to be restricted to learning about it exclusively through academic translations or lectures. Of course, there are cultural intersections with these myths that shouldn't be ignored, we always have to treat it with care when engaging with it so that we aren't overwriting another culture's traditions or beliefs - but if you're simply wanting to learn about and entertain yourself with some amazing stories that have quite literally stood the test of time, do so however you see fit :)

Rewriting Veilguard Part 1 - The World State
Disclaimer: I don't hate the game, I actually think it's quite great given the development hell Bioware went through in those 10 years. This is more of a hypothetical universe where there was less of that behind the scenes drama. Just a fun writing exercise.
Expanding Veilguard's World State Editor
Like many of us, I was disappointed with the total amount of choices carrying over from past games being only three, one of which dealt with romance, two with decisions made in the Trespasser DLC, and all of them being from Inquisition. This already set the precedent that we shouldnât really be expecting the game to be as connected to our unique Thedas as we have come to be used to from previous titlesâno more uniquely flavoured codex entries, no more small but sweet cameos here and there that make the world itself feel like a larger place that we had helped shape.
Given The Veilguardâs very troubled production history of multiple delays, staff layoffs, and all-around restarts of the entire project, it is honestly a surprise that we even got three choices, so credit where credit is due. They made with what they had. But what if The Veilguard had this vision from the start? What if there wasnât any of this meddling? What if Bioware simply had more time and control? What if they could truly let us import the World State this game deserved?
Now, for this hypothetical rewritten playthrough, Iâm going off from the fact that the Dragon Age Keep will not be used; I actually found it a neat idea to tick my three choices in the character creator, and it would have probably been better had Inquisition done something similar. Why do I think that? Because it means we are not running into any dangers of servers potentially shutting down, leaving us trapped in the canon we happened to have imported last. Converting the Keep into an offline editor was a good idea, but unfortunately not executed nearly enough as, letâs face it, we all expected. So weâre gonna have some fun for Veilguard.
Disclaimer: Iâm going to refer to the gameâs title as Veilguard from now on, not âtheâ Veilguard. I really donât like the change of having a âtheâ in a series of otherwise one-word, or one-number, titles.
Of course, we have to be realistic about this. It is virtually impossible to implement every single decision from across all three games, and those that can be implanted canât alter the main plot too much. Certainly, we like to imagine and picture things, but letâs approach this from an actually doable point of view.
Right, so imagine you just finalised your Rook, and then get a screen titled âPast Adventuresâ. Not just âThe Inquisitionâ. And it would take up the entire screen instead of being shoved somewhere in the corner of the final CC page, which many people missed. I could have missed it too, had I not known beforehand that it was going to be there!
It would say something akin to âYou can customise the protagonists and several events from the games Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age II, and Dragon Age: Inquisition. These choices will have both major and minor effects on the plot of Veilguard. If this is your first Dragon Age title, you would be advised to skip this section for now, as you may otherwise risk getting overwhelmed. A default World State has been pre-generated for the game.â
Why did I add this disclaimer? Because it would show us, right from the get-go, that we respect both new and old players. If youâre a new player, feel free to skip this part as it wonât matter to you anyway and, quite frankly, you wouldnât want to spend an eternity in the character creator doing things you might not even be familiar with. But if youâre a returning player or someone who has read up on recaps and watched countless lore videos, come on right in, weâve got you covered, donât worry! We know how much time you spent meticulously crafting your World State for Inquisition, so join us and customise to your heartâs content.
If you choose to not skip ahead (honestly the only time I would click âskipâ on that shit is if I was a new player), you will be presented with three tarot cards, one shows the griffon, the Grey Warden symbol, one shows Kirkwallâs heraldry, and one shows the Inquisitionâs banner. Hereâs your previous three games. And now we get to customise them a little. The little gremlin in me would be quite gleefully rubbing his hands at this prospect.
Past Adventures: The Blight
We open the first slide and are immediately hit with a crimson screen and an ambient reprise of several of Inon Zurâs themes from DAO. I loved this part in the game, when you click to customise your Inquisitor and are immediately hit with âCalling the Inquisitionâ. Really great stuff for early emotions. Now letâs actually customise things.
The Hero of Ferelden
I do not expect us to actually be able to recreate the Warden in the flesh, but I believe they should be at least brought up in conversation or mentioned in codex entries and letters. Here are the things we get to customise about them specifically:
The Hero: Here, we get to tick the race, gender, class, and background for our Warden. Again, no character creator, just fancy tarot cards. But guess what? That would already be more than enough for what we can do. At least we know the game acknowledges their continued existence.
The Wardenâs fate: Did the Hero of Ferelden perform the ultimate sacrifice?
Romance: Who did your Warden romance, if at all?
The Companions
Now that our Warden is set, we jump over to DAOâs companions. Each companion has their own little mini-section. The first few questions will always be âDid you even recruit them? And if so, did they survive? If so, were you on good terms or not?â These questions, depending on the answers, will immediately lock or open the more specific ones. Which are, as follows:
Did the Warden have Morrigan perform the Dark Ritual?
What is Alistairâs ultimate fate?
Was Sten reunited with his sword?
What happened to Loghain?
What happened to Marjorlaine?
The Battle of Ostagar
What happened to the prisoner at Ostagar?
The Arl of Redcliffe
What is Connorâs fate?
Is Isolde alive?
Did you help Bevin and return his sword?
The Urn of Sacred Ashes
What happened to the Urn?
The Nature of the Beast
How was the situation between the Dalish and the werewolves resolved?
A Paragon of Her Kind
What happened to the Anvil of the Void?
Who rules Orzammar?
Did the Warden help Brother Burkel create a Chantry in Orzammar?
Did the Warden prove the Legion of the Dead was connected to a noble house?
Did Orta join the Assembly?
Wardenâs Keep
What happened to Sophia and Avernus?
Denerim
Did the Warden complete Slim Couldryâs crime wave?
Who rules Ferelden?
Who killed Urthemiel?
Awakening
What happened to Nathaniel?
What happened to the Architect?
What happened to Vigilâs Keep and Amaranthine?
As you can see, I have not included all the choices, just the ones I think can be carried over in both realistic and interesting manners. Not all of them will heavily feature in the game; in fact, many of them are for flavour and codex entries only, but there is still merit in those. We know there is a whole lot of stuff happening in the South thanks to the letters the Inquisitor regales us with. So letâs put some world-state uniqueness to those letters. But in this rewrite, some of these choices will, in fact, feature in a more substantial manner.
And thatâs Dragon Age: Origins done! Moving on to the next one!
Past Adventures: The Tale of the Champion
When we enter this screen, the CC assumes Kirkwallâs orangey-yellow tone and we get a reprisal of the key DA2 themes by Inon Zur, the most prominent one being, of course, Hawkeâs family theme. This one is not going to be as big as DAO, but there are a few important factors nevertheless, especially concerning possible deaths and survivals.
The Champion of Kirkwall
Unlike the Hero of Ferelden, Hawke will actually be customisable in this one. Because no matter whether or not they were sent to the Fade or Weisshaupt, there is always the potential for them to still be alive. So, here are the choices regarding Hawke:
The Champion: Here you can customise Hawkeâs gender, class, and personality.
Who did Hawke romance, if at all?
The Party
Pretty much every companionâs card, aside from a few, will have the questions âDid you recruit them?â, âAre they still alive?â, and âWere they friend or rival to Hawke?â at the forefront. Most of it is gonna be flavour, but itâs still my flavour, dammit!
What happened to Bethany or Carver?
What happened to Isabela and the Tome of Koslun?
What happened to Fenris and Danarius?
What happened to Merrill, her eluvian, and Clan Sabrae?
What happened to Bartrand?
What happened to Anders when the Chantry exploded?
Did Hawke approve of Anderâs actions?
Did Aveline marry Donnic?
The Tale of the Champion
Did Hawke protect the Bone Pit from all its dangers?
What happened to Feynriel?
Did Hawke let Zevran go?
Did Nathaniel survive?
Did Hawke side with the mages or the templars?
Fewer choices are carrying over here compared to DAO, but many of the events that occurred in DA2 are only relevant to Kirkwallâs immediate fate, which is already resolved by the time of DAI. Many of these will be flavour again, but some of them, Iâm not going to say which, will definitely have a bigger impact.
Right, weâre done with DA2, letâs move on to the last one!
Past Adventures: The Inquisition
And here we get to the big one, the game that most directly impacts much of DAVâs story. We click on the last page and get the green shades and DAIâs ambience themes, a beautiful reprisal of Trevor Morrisâ great hits. I would like to once again reiterate how emotional the CC music made me feel here when I was playing the game. Let us now customise our choices.
The Inquisitor
While the Hero of Ferelden will be a background figure in letters and codex entries, and Hawke more of a minor character with a significant role, the Inquisitor will have a much larger presence. Just how large, youâll find out soon. But for now, letâs customise them:
The Inquisitor: Here you can customise your Inquisitorâs race, gender, class, and specialisation. Their personality as well, for while it wasnât as apparent as with Hawke, the Inquisitor does still have a distinct range of dialogue choices. You can still be diplomatic, lighthearted, or even rough.
Who did the Inquisitor romance, if at all?
The Inner Circle
As with the other companion sections, pretty much all slides here will feature the âDid you actually recruit them?â, âAre they still around?â, and âAre you friends or not?â questions. Alongside a few specific ones that will definitely have more of an impact here.
Did Dorian resolve the issue with his father?
What happened to Blackwall?
Did the Iron Bull remain loyal to the Qun?
Did Cassandra rebuild the Seekers of Truth?
Did Cassandra discover the book of secrets and what did she do with it?
What happened to Harmond?
Which path did Cole choose?
What happened to Solasâ friend?
Did Varric track down the red lyrium source?
Did the Inquisitor give Vivienne the heart of a snow wyvern?
How was Cullenâs lyrium dilemma resolved?
How did the Inquisitor help Josephine resolve her familyâs fortunes?
Was Leliana hardened or softened?
The Path of the Inquisitor
Did the Inquisitor embrace or denounce their title of Herald of Andraste?
Did the Inquisition side with the mages or the templars?
What was the general principle upon which the Inquisition was founded?
Who rules Orlais?
Who stayed behind in the Fade?
What happened to the Grey Wardens after Adamant Fortress?
What happened to Samson or Calpernia?
Who drank from the Well of Sorrows?
Did the Inquisitor respect the rituals at the Temple of Mythal?
Who became Divine Victoria?
The Inquisitionâs Influence
Did the Inquisitor ally with the Hinterland cultists?
Was the rift in Crestwood closed?
Was Caer Bronach captured?
Did the Inquisitor make a deal with Imshael?
Was Suledin Keep captured?
Was Griffon Wing Keep captured?
Was Sutherlandâs company formed?
What tone did the Inquisitorâs judgments take?
Jaws of Hakkon
Did the Inquisitor learn Ameridanâs fate?
Was Hakkon slain?
Did the Inquisitor share the truth about Ameridan?
The Descent
Did the Inquisitor stop the earthquakes from destroying the Deep Roads?
Trespasser
What is the ultimate fate of the Inquisition?
What is the Inquisitorâs final goal regarding Solas?
Again, this looks like a lot, and it is, but bear in mind that a lot of these will only have minor impacts on the story in the form of cameos and codex entries. However, there are several major DAI choices that will have significant impact.
For our hypothetical rewrite, I shall not list every single choice I made for my imaginary playthrough. Instead, I shall reveal them as we go along so as not to clutter the space too much. And itâs a bit more fun this way.
And thatâs the World State editor finally done! I believe all of these choices are able to feature in some capacity, be it big or small. But no matter if itâs a big world-changing consequence or simple flavour texts and cameos, it will still be our Thedas, our own unique version of it that we helped shape.
Now that the past is dealt with, letâs look at the present. Next time weâll talk about Rook, the six factions, and why a DAO-style origin story selection would have not only been beneficial but very doable.

alright I wanted to get a lot of hours in to make sure I have an opinion that's not just my initial dislike.
main conclusion: this is a YA game. whether that's a blessing or a crime is up to you.
good things, spoiler free:
it's a casual game so it's very easy to start playing whenever, stop, then return to the game. the difficulty settings let you customize and make it even more casual, and the story will be served to you in neat easily digestible bits that do not necessitate you know anything about the franchise to enjoy it. it's fun.
the combat is really fun, smooth, and offers a lot of possibilities of matching and mixing, even if at the end of the day a lot of the skills are basically the same thing, just recoloured. it's very satisfying to play around with, and you can refund skill points at any point and try something entirely different. killing bosses feels nice.
there's plenty of voice acting that's very well done and expressive
the level design is very intuitive while still making exploration interesting and actually fun, and the decision not to make it open world was GOLDEN!
the puzzles, while somewhat rudimentary, are really fun to get into and feel satisfying to solve. you won't spend too long solving them and you will not become frustrated unnecessarily. where previous da games would be a really annoying game of connections, veilguard is a nice wordle session where you already got one or two letters settled.
the level art is beautiful and makes you want to actually look around and take the sights in. lighting design is awesome, bloom notwithstanding.
there are a lot of codex entries that are interesting to a long-time fan of the franchise, and actually satisfy some of the hunger for lore and good writing
there are multiple characters, both companion and side ones, that are interesting and have a lot of potential.
the narrative exposition of your rook's background is nicely woven in, and offers a lot of replayability potential to explore different backgrounds.
the fact that you get to explore many iconic places from the franchise is nicely done, both in terms of game mechanics and the underlying narrative reason. it's fun to finally see more of them and learn more about them.
bad things - under a cut both due to some spoilers and simply due to negativity that's about to ensue:
this is a really casual game that's even more basic in matters of storytelling and relying on YA fantasy tropes than inquisition was. it is basically like playing a dreamworks animation in form of a game. the only important thing is the power of friendship.
none of the decisions matter in any significant way - they do affect the game but it's still all about being friends and brave, and not much more matters.
the stakes are THE BIGGEST EVER! that means they don't matter at all. very marvel style where they had no other ideas but to one up the previous games in a sort of playground level of increasing stakes. oh, you are the strongest? well I am the strongest to INFINITY! oh then I am actually infinity + 1!!!
the choices presented are offensively shallow and both the narrative and the characters suffer greatly because of that. it's much, much worse than inquisition was in that regard: gone are the times of difficult decisions, risk, or thinking about politics. the only important thing is the power of friendship.
the main argument regarding the bad, YA writing is that "rook has to be a good guy and be buddies with everyone to defeat the big bad guys!!!" and I really hate it. you cannot be a cunt, you cannot be mean, you cannot be aggressive, you cannot make any choices at all that would affect the story in a significant way. you can only be a bit sarcastic - and it's done in a much more millennial "merp merp, adulting is hard XD" way. much worse than purple hawke. even inquisition let you do interesting things in terms of morality, politics, other characters...
adding to the above, you are everyone's best friend and everyone loves you and trusts you implicitly. characters who are total strangers will after one mission chime in with their mushy awe and remind you, every step of the way, that you are the bestest and bravest and most specialest. feels undeserved and shallow, and again the game treats you like a child.
the dialogue in the main quests is very basic and aimed at the most casual player. it's all skippable at no risk. outside of cutscenes, using the characters, the game treats you like a child that needs to be reminded of how its most basic mechanics work all the time, dora the explorer style. uh oh, can you see that door? it looks like it's blocked! oh no! we have to find something to unlock it with! do you remember what we did earlier today? let's try it again! can you repeat after me?
only side quests offer anything interesting in terms of writing and dialogue - and even that is scarce.
the music is so uninteresting and generic it only brings to mind a bad marvel movie where you try to superficially introduce some pomp to an otherwise underwhelming stand-off. it's criminal, honestly, and has zero character. I got literally excited when I heard one of the NPCs in the market play a tune based on one of the inquisition tavern songs because that was the only memorable piece of music in hours.
the romance is very rudimentary and the lack of any jealousy mechanics feels very YA again. flirting is underwhelming and even though there are plenty of "personal" missions with your companions, the writing and pacing doesn't let you become too attached to them.
the RP part of RPG has to be mostly done in your head. the characters have a lot of potential and most of it is wasted. if you like a given character, just go find a fanfic about them - don't count on the game giving you that.
cameos from characters from previous games are so cheap and shallow. the inquisitor is straight up from a disney movie. morrigan is sweet and nice and likes you so much. dorian is forced into a cutscene randomly as a very cheap attempt to pull in fans of the franchise. isabela looks like a knock-off doll you can buy at the cheap market and is also, ya know, fucking white suddenly.
the qunari are shit, both aesthetically and narratively.
any social and political issues from the previous games are entirely gone, whether it's the matters of the qun, slavery, elves, chantry, or mages vs templars conflicts. none of it matters because the stakes are INFINITY + 1 !!!!!!1
please i am dying to hear your opinion on veilguard
oh I have plenty. let me finish tonight's session of playing and I will return to this to ramble very, very gladly

WHOA LOOK IT'S
My ocs! I finally got around to compiling general info about the main ones I have (there are a LOT of others but they're more like named side character/NPCs that get introduced as the story I have for these guys goes on)
Lemme list off the five I have most developed rn, which form the team .wav(E) (pronounced "dot wave"):
Cora
Bold, brash, but quite cute (her words)
A bit of a firecracker
Her curiosity is as vast as her energy and wit
Has the cutest smile
Left the underground since the Inkantation and had spent a significant time adjusting to the surface culture (long before meeting her buddy Luke)
Has a secret passion for dancing, especially pop and hip-hop (very sharp sense of rhythm)
Lives and dies by Slosher. Until she has to pick up a secondary main in Squeezer too. And Tri-slosher. And Wiper.
Does gardening on the side. There are little succulents dotted around her apartment, about 8 in total
Cooks the most often out of the team, specializes in pan-fried dishes and stews
Likes hot tea (prefers herbal over fruit teas tho)
Had a fruit tea drink one time (it was a peach tea) and didn't like it at all. Had a sourness that detracted from the warmth that she normally likes from drinking hot tea, so she avoids them now
Cass
Captain of the team
Full name 'Cassidy', people usually alternate calling her between the two
Most connections to everything
Level-headed, abundant charisma (puts the rizz in charisma haHA), rarely phased by anything
A big sister of sorts to Cora. Cora took to Cass really well when she recruited her and her friend Luke after random queuing in Salmon Run and the like
Flexes anything, but will mostly stick to Blasters. Has been interested in both Tri-Stringer and Reef-lux as of late tho
Works part time at a boba store (the one where the team gathers together fully for the first time)
The boba shop's name is called Roomba Boba, which has little Squee-G bots that roam around and sometimes deliver drinks or carry napkin holders. Naturally, they're also really good at mopping up spills
Has also had many odd jobs in the past, including being a camp counselor at Camp Triggerfish and [CLASSIFIED]
She's really good with kids, always gave me those peppy young adult/senior-in-high-school vibes that always know how to hype up a crowd
Cooks just as well as Cora, but feels more in tune with baking than cooking. She comes over to her apartment to help make meals sometimes.
Tobias
Neighbor and teammate of Cora, whom he develops a firm kinship with since their first encounter at the first team meetup
Also goes by 'Tobes' or 'Tobo'
Looks reserved, but is very easy and sociable to talk with
Did stakeout in the military, and thus has the worst sleep schedule of the team out of habit
Loves tea as well, especially herbal tea. Has a dislike for coffee though.
Favors backliners as per his role on the team, but is also killer with Octobrush and Stamper
Works part-time at Ammo Knights (weapons maintenance)
Gives the best hugs
Enjoys meticulous work such as mechanical tinkering and Gundam building
Likes to take off his glasses when he's eating or needs to decompress
Luke
Cora's Turf and Salmon Run buddy prior to forming .wav(E) with Cass
Favors Brellas
The least composed of the team, screams a lot when jumped in battle
Overall, is one the that gets meme'd on the most lmao
Favorite candy is pop rocks. This information revolts Cora and Tobes.
Likes learning and making mixed drinks in his free time
Incidentally, is the heaviest drinker of the bunch
Microwave dinner degenerate lol
Loves Clam Blitz so much, he'll even play it on his own (pain and misery)
Rooms with a bunch of other rando inklings who aren't home often
Wears nail polish the most often out of all the members (the others like to as well, but not always since they get lazy sometimes)
Hira
Joins very late to the group (about halfway through the gang's Splatoon 3 arc), but signifies a meaningful development for most of the peeps
A reflection of "sweaty try-hards" who complain and tilt over their teammates (Me that was me, for a while....a dark time....)
Sweaty dualies main, is proficient with most dualies
Has a swear and an insult for every time something goes wrong in a match, especially when random queuing
Incidentally, has the biggest potty mouth out of everyone
Has a soft spot for strawberry milk (it calms her down)
Will sit down with a book or even a manga from time to time
Is actually very down to earth outside of league battling and has an overall calm and kind personality, albeit a bit cynical at times
About her encounter with .wav(E): Cass finds her at Roomba Boba one day (the boba shop she works at) and notices her being super down
So she sits with her and listens to her problem. It was a rather personal rmoment for her.
Hira's time in .wav(E) will be crucial to her improvement as a player mentally, not just mechanically, especially considering what happened with her last team
Much of her personal growth is inspired by the time she spends bonding with Cora, who also ends up being positively influenced in various ways
Rumors among the Octarians tell of a battalion that had fallen tragically in a battle with outside factions prior to the Inkantation Inkcident; nearly all members wiped out due to poor negligence and ill preparation. The few that were skilled enough to survive the ordeal moved on to serve and be decorated with honors among their newer ilk. Their festering resentment towards incompetence and inefficiency remained even after liberation, however.
#splatoon ocs#.wav(E)#splatoon#one day I'll have good art of them#until then it's nothin but picrew frames lol#i have so many facts and lore about them by this point#they've been cookin for 5 years now wow#i have more development lore for all these characters that i can share later once I have more time showcasing these characters in my fanfic#yes i have one#not i haven't finished the next chapter#i had to revamp a lot of things now so I jave to pivot from where I left off

thinking about the roles boredom and cowardice play in the progression of ts!essek's character throughout the series- when he's not fighting off a sense of death he's fighting off boredom and it's not until 2 or 2.5ish years after the campaign that he really finds his footing with either. he's dealt with possibility by necessity of his field and knows he could have walked infinite paths but he saw the bright clear line that leads from A to B and chose it eyes open if blindered and through sheer chance it landed him back at square zero. maybe it didn't even matter at all. so now what. infinity's here again but it's out of reach because he's closed so many doors. he's bored and scared and thus aimless because while being one is terrible being both is torture and he's wrestling with that as he rebuilds his life from the ground up.
#i feel like rn most questions i can think to ask about why ts!essek does anything boils down to varying ratios of#'he's bored' and 'he doesn't want to be dead' (as distinct from 'he doesn't want to die')#(unfortunately essek dying is against the ts rules though so there's no easy way out there)#'why does he go into aeor with caleb' he doesn't want to be dead#'why does he leave aeor' he doesn't want to be dead#'why does he visit verin after so many years apart' he doesn't want to be dead#'why does he leave nicodranas after getting a deal with yussa and ryn' he's bored#'why does he go to zadash with beau and yasha' he's bored#'why is he obsessing about his relationship with caleb' he's bored#'why does he go back to zadash even though he was warned ludinus is keeping an eye' he's bored#'why does he leave caleb to do hfb stuff after declaring he wanted to stay with caleb first and foremost' he's bored#i can elaborate on all those points#also the fact that his boredom is fought by challenge and (to a certain extent) fright#whereas his cowardice is fought by curiosity#they compliment each other#do it bored as the comfort zone and do it scared as the panic zone so the growth/learning zone lies between them#many thoughts#i have PLANS but i need to read more books to learn how to write them#touchsent lore#chanse chatters#i have a bad habit of assuming my everything comes off as shallow#like it feels deep to me but also i have been submerged in ts for three years straight so idk if i'm the best judge

Ughhhhhhh I hate writing and I hate not writing and I hate myself
#nearly bought a digital typewriter today. actually i DID buy a digital typewriter today. officially yes i have bought a digital typewriter.#the money for the digital typewriter has left my account but i have emailed them to cancel the order because i can't in good faith buy#a digital typewriter when i don't fucking WRITE#i thought it might help me get back into it. distraction free and while allowing me to not judge my own writing#and be continuously editing while i write and going 'i'm crap i'm crap i'm crap no one will ever read this and if they do they will think#that i'm garbage and that i should feel bad etc etc etc'#but it's too expensive and i have the feeling i wouldn't even like or use the thing once i got it#because the IDEAS! the ideas aren't coming to me. or rather they are but none of them seem to stick#i feel underconfident in writing any of them#and then i have old projects that i've always wanted to get back to like the tennis romance thing but SO much has changed since i first#started drafting it. like i don't even know if i like the main couple anymore. i kind of want to put both of them with different OCs of min#but it'd switch up the WHOLE story if i had a different cast#in fact most of the problem lies in the fact that i have this long-running bedtime story i tell myself every night with lore#and a massive cast of characters that i switch out depending on who i'm most interested in right now and every so often i incorporate new#themes and ideas and motifs and plot points sometimes based on media i've been watching because it's MY bedtime story and it doesn't matter#if i plagiarise in my own brain. but then obviously i can't plagiarise in real life#and none of my bedtime stories are GOING anywhere. sometimes i only get through a scene or two before i fall asleep#all of which means my bedtime story is not so much a sweeping epic novel but a sitcom with way too many characters#most of which are werewolves to be honest and sometimes for my own wish fulfilment one of them will walk out of my head#and take care of my problems for me by lending me ÂŁ1million or murdering my best friend's ex. in my mind obviously#so it's like. it's a case of getting in there and annexing off the stuff i think i can use#it's like yeah i've definitely written several romance novels in my head in the process of this but does it matter if they're IN my HEAD#to be honest i feel like my main strength is in creating characters. like i have this one family of werewolves i've been slowly but surely#adding members to since i was like 16. maybe younger? no yeah i think i made the first one when i was 12#they're compelling to ME anyway. i care about them. it's just PLOTS. i can't plot#if a book could just be a lot of dialogue and sex scenes and silly moments and character studies i'd be alright#i also can't describe settings. don't ask me to because i can't#and now i'm just annoyed with myself because i sat down at my laptop to try to write and instead i'm here complaining about how i don't wri#and if i had the digital typewriter... i mean i'd probably still be doing this i'd just no longer have ÂŁ300#i don't have the ÂŁ300 anyway. i hope to christ they refund my card i'm a fucking idiot

i LOOOVE thinking about fantasy disabilities!!!! i love figuring out what people would have to do to accommodate them! it's literally awesome!

everyone in mcyt fandom talks about bad inventories but i feel like we don't talk enough about the different types of bad inventory & the ways that inventories can be characterizing. i took most of these screenshots but one or two of them aren't by me and i've just had them saved for a few months sorry. i'm taking inventories from various people across various servers (wild life, dream smp, hermitcraft, lifesteal, and 2b2t) to illustrate my point here
like there are inventories that are bad because they're empty:
but then there's also inventories that are bad because they're full:
and, like-- the different ways an inventory can be bad are also characterizing? an inventory can be bad because the items aren't stacked; or because it's empty of anything useful; or because it's so full of building/fight supplies that there's no slots left for doing anything else; or because it's full of random junk. it speaks to a character's position (compare tubbo's diamond sword and empty inventory to ranboo's netherite sword or zam's full inventory of potions) and the rules of the server they're on (tubbo's not wearing elytra because elytra aren't allowed on the dsmp; zam's inventory has chorus fruit and wind charges but no ender pearls because ender pearls aren't allowed this season on lifesteal) and what their priorities are (building, pvp, lore) and how organized vs scattered they are and so much more. another inventory i like:
like!!! that's so instantly characterizing, for both the character and the server!!!! 5 stacks of end crystals + obsidian. 6 stacks of tnt. 3 stacks of god apples and a stack of chorus fruit as your only food. the bucket of lava and bucket of water for lavacasting. the fact that the flint and steel is enchanted with unbreaking. that's a STORY--of the character but also of the server! this is not the sort of inventory you have on most servers! it's so focused around griefing--explosions, lavacasts--and pvp, and the stacks of god apples as primary food source are an instant warning sign for widespread duping. the chorus fruit not for fights--ender pearls are strictly better, and he's got some so he clearly has access to them--which means it's for escaping traps, which means that's a live concern. it's got a lot of pvp supplies but it's so wildly different from the lifesteal inventory in ways that speak to the differences in server rules and cultures. like, horrendous inventory in many ways. also, very good inventory in some ways. also also, delightful inventory! fascinating inventory!!! inventories are such a delightful source of instant characterization i love them so so much
#mcyt#therapists dni#any british ants in the chat?#the lifesteal inventory is a screenshot from today's zam stream#but my /favorite/ lifesteal inventory screenshot is actually one from s4.#however the reasons it's my favorite are a bit of a tangent and i just wanted a reasonably representative Lifesteal Inventory#which is to say 'full of potions'#also debated doing a s5 screenshot from back when carrying ludicrous amounts of xp was the meta#n e ways . point is . I LOVE MINECRAFT STORYTELLING

I want to take a moment to talk about Gale's "obsession" with Mystra, because I've had that thrown at me a lot when discussing his character with players who hate him.
First off, I'd like to emphasize a point that many people already know: Mystra groomed him. Though his exact age when she "slept" with him isn't known, a new document that's been supplied in the epilogue confirms he was merely "eight summers" old when she took him under her wing and sent Elminster to find him. Mystra, in fact, has a vast history of grooming little boys, to the point that many parents hide their sons from her gaze if they show an early aptitude for magic. Though Gale did have other lovers before her, Mystra was really all he knew throughout his childhood, and the power dynamic was not equal. It makes sense that he'd have trouble pulling away from her at first, especially since she convinced him that she/the Weave were his only value in life.
Second, I want to discuss something most players probably aren't aware of. In D&D lore, there's a place called the City of Judgement. This is essentially D&D limbo, where all mortal souls go to be judged after death. Bad news for atheists, if you don't believe in or worship any gods, you're known as a "faithless", and since no gods will grant a faithless entry into their domain, your soul becomes part of the Wall of the Faithless.
In short, a faithless' soul will be sucked into the wall, where it will guard the city and suffer endless torment for all eternity. This fate isn't only reserved for faithless, however; it's also a punishment for fallen Chosen or anyone who's been abandoned by their gods. Like Gale. He's absolutely terrified, and he tells you as much if you romance him. If you keep things platonic, he alludes to it during the "go to hell" scene. This is compounded by the fact that raiding demons sometimes attack the City of Judgement, tear souls from the wall, and drag them to the Abyss, where they're used to spawn new low-level demons or to feed their masters. There's no good ending, whether a soul remains trapped in the wall or not.
Gale doesn't explicitly say it, but he's contemplating his own death here, as he probably did the entire time he was locked away in his tower. This is why he's so quick to agree to kill himself for Mystra's forgiveness. It's not because he's "obsessed" with her or because he wants her back, it's because he'll literally go to hell if he can't convince her he's worthy of her twisted sense of forgiveness. By the time we meet Gale, he's honestly over Mystra in all romantic sense, and even more so by Act 2, whether you romance him or not. He's simply...

âcatalyst.
pairing: hwang hyunjin x reader
genre: fluff, pining, non-idol au, best friendâs little brother au
word count: 5.4k
summary: when your best friend points out how there seems to be something more than just a platonic friendship going on between you and hyunjin, you couldnât help but start questioning everything youâve been doing together so far.
a/n: and we finally get y/nâs pov!! (and a little bit of hyunieâs as always lol canât help myself). there is a lotttttt of overthinking on her end so please go easy on her, she just got hit by facts she hadnât thought twice about before (thank u chan).
if anyone comes across this in the tags, this is part 15.2 of a social media series called heart out! you can read it as a stand-alone but i wouldnât recommend it since there are a lot of references to the previous parts of the story.
as always i hope you all enjoy! if you do, please let me know your thoughts on it<3
When you woke up that day, you never wouldâve expected to end up with so many unanswered questions by the end of it.
It was supposed to be a normal day â a great one, actually. You were having lunch at the Hwangâs household, and that itself was enough to make you happy as ever.
It had been a while since youâd last seen Hyunjin and Yejiâs parents, let alone shared a meal with them, so you took it upon yourself to get up extra early that morning in order to make some dessert for them âa lemon pie and a chocolate one, as they were Mr. and Mrs. Hwangâs favouritesâ and still have enough time left to get ready.
Yeji called you out as soon as she and Chan arrived to pick you up, ranting about how it wasnât necessary for you to bring anything, while you and Chan could only laugh, knowing well enough she was already eyeing the lemon pie and thinking of how many pieces she would have.
What only made it funnier to you was that you knew youâd get a similar reaction from Hyunjin once you met him at his parentsâ, only heâd be eyeing the chocolate pie instead.
Said and done, as soon as you entered their house and Hyunjin came up to greet you ânot without first letting you know just how hurt he was over you sharing a ride with your friends instead of himâ, he began to go on about how he told you that you didnât need to bring their parents any presents, like you said you would after his mother had so generously made you some soup when you were in bed with a fever a week ago. Nevertheless, you could see the way he stole a few glances at the chocolate pie, before offering to take it to the kitchen, while Yeji did the same with the lemon one. You could never get bored with these two.
Their parents, you knew very well by now, were just the same as them. It was clear where Yeji and Hyunjin got their humor and antics from.
You always had a very nice time with them, as theyâd always find the right topic to keep the conversation going. But then for some reason your dating life made it to the conversation at one point and Mingyu was brought up by their mother asking you about the âhandsome young manâ they met a couple of times; and somehow that alone would be the catalyst that set off a series of events that ultimately left you questioning your entire relationship with Hyunjin later that night.
âSo you are definitely not getting back together with him?â Their mother asked at last, once the whole âMingyu loreâ, as Yeji called it, had been covered.
âUmâŚâ you hesitated, eyes unconsciously locking with Hyunjin next to you, before you looked for Yeji, who was in front of him. âNo, weâre notâ.
âOh, dearâ she lamented. âWhat he did was such a shame, the two of you certainly made a very nice coupleâ.
âYou heard how he turned out to be an asshole, thoughâ Yeji pointed out, taking the words from Hyunjinâs mouth and inevitably having him and Chan nod in silent agreement.
âItâs a good thing youâre moving past himâ their father chimed in this time.
You nodded, giving him a gentle smile. You were trying your best, for sure.
âHis parents must be devastatedâ Mrs. Hwang lamented again, bringing your attention back to her.
This time, you couldnât help but let out a breathy laugh. âI mean, I got along really well with them, but I wouldnât go as far as to think theyâre devastatedâ.
âLosing a daughter-in-law as beautiful and attentive as youâŚâ she explained, bringing some heat to your cheeks that you tried to play off by taking a sip of water. âThe two of you wouldâve made such beautiful childrenâ.
The water you were drinking didnât follow the path down your throat it shouldâve at the sound of her statement, and you inevitably ended up choking on it.
âYah, mumâ Hyunjin called her out, gently patting your back as you tried to catch your breath. âCan we not mention children and her ex in the same sentence?â
âRight, sorryâ she apologised, handing you a napkin and giving you a soft smile before her eyes focused on her husband; ignoring the way Hyunjinâs hand remained unconsciously drawing small circles on your back until you were able to breathe normally again. âBut just imagine if we had that kind of genes in the familyâ.
âDid she just call us ugly?â Yeji frowned, locking eyes with Hyunjin, who couldnât help but chuckle instead of acting offended like his sister â in his eyes you were on a whole other level of beauty after all.
âHonestly though, even I feel offended nowâ Chan butted in. âI donât recall you wanting my genes this badâ.
âThey met you when we were already a couple, she probably wouldâve tried to bribe you too otherwiseâ Yeji let him know with a cynical laugh, having you all follow right after.
âTrust me, sheâs already pictured how cute your children will beâ Mr. Hwang let the couple know.
âCan we not?â Yeji pleaded with red cheeks this time. Chan, on the other hand, could not let the opportunity to tease her pass, poking her cheek and repeating in a squeaky voice just how cute their kids would be. âBack to the topic of Y/Nâs genes, pleaseâ she begged.
âJeez! Thanks, best friendâ you ironically said amidst an incredulous laugh, earning a finger heart and an obnoxious smile from her in response.
âMy point was,â their mother resumed her previous train of thought. âNow that Y/Nâs single, Iâm kind of wishing we had an older son. Imagine how beautiful their children would be if she became a Hwangâ.
Well, that certainly felt like a bucket of ice cold water being thrown right at Hyunjin.
âHyunjinâs right here, though?â Chan pointed out before the youngest could begin to get lost in his âquite angstyâ thoughts. âTheyâre both in their twenties, Iâd say thereâs hope for Y/N to become a Hwangâ.
And maybe, if you werenât too busy kicking Chan under the table, you wouldâve noticed the shy smile curving up Hyunjinâs mouth, as well as his slightly rosy cheeks as he looked down to his still nearly untouched food.
Maybe if Yeji wasnât too busy laughing at her boyfriend after getting hit and ever so poorly trying to comfort him, she wouldâve noticed her brother being all flustered, too.
But, thankfully for him, his parents did. And that was enough for them to nod their heads in silent understanding.
That was the last comment they made about your dating life that afternoon, having no trouble directing the topic once again towards Chan and Yejiâs relationship instead.
You, on the other hand, although had managed to do a pretty good job at following whatever topic was brought up for the rest of the meal, could not seem to let Chanâs comment go.
It was out of place. Way out of it. What did Hyunjin have to do with it anyway? Like, yes, they were talking about you becoming a Hwang and, yes, he was the only son they had, but that didnât immediately make him an option?
He was three years younger than you. He was only seventeen and still in high school when you met, whereas you were in your second year of university. It felt wrong to even think about it. And it was even worse considering that there was a reason his mum had explicitly mentioned her wish to have an older son instead of pushing you towards Hyunjin right away. It didnât seem right for them either, as far as you could tell from what had just gone down.
Which is why you couldnât let it go. Not even after you and Hyunjin got back to your place, like you had agreed to earlier that day when you decided to share a car with Chan and Yeji instead of him, and he wasted no time to secure his much needed alone time with you once you were done at his parentsâ.
Youâd excused yourself to the kitchen to make some popcorn while Hyunjin was comfortably resting on your couch as he looked for any romcom movie to watch while he sipped on the hot chocolate you made as soon as you got home, and you took those few minutes away from him to text Chan and ask for an explanation.
And, God, did you get one.
You re-read the conversation over and over after he went offline, unable to understand where the hell had it all come from.
âHeâs 23 nowâ.
âYou may have met when he was 17 but heâs an adult nowâ.
âConsidering whatâs currently going on between the two of youâ.
âIâm just trying to make you see and actually consider all your choicesâ.
âHyunjin is not a little boy anymoreâ.
Every single text, hitting harder than the other.
Of course he was no longer a little boy. He stopped being one a long time ago, you werenât stupid. But he was still Hyunjin, Yejiâs little brother. Nothing would ever change that.
You were supposed to care for him just like she did, to be there for him and protect him when the time came. He wasnât supposed to be âa choiceâ for you like any other guy could.
He was Hyunjin, the teenage boy who hardly talked to you the weekend you first met and would stutter almost every time he did, and who would so shyly let you and Yeji know dinner was ready whenever you stayed at theirs after that.
Hyunjin, the high school student youâd give some advice regarding the university admission test and applications throughout his last year of it, and whose graduation you attended later on.
Hyunjin, who made it to your university and would constantly ask for your help in his assignments, regardless of him having chosen a completely different major; and who youâd constantly check up on to make sure he was doing okay in his first year of it.
Hyunjin, who held you tight as ever the night Mingyu left you, and refused to go home like Yeji told him it was okay for him to until he was sure you were sound asleep and no longer crying, which didnât happen until way past four in the morning.
Hyunjin, who would text to check up on you every single day after your breakup, even if it meant getting very short, cold answers from the heartbroken and detached persona that had taken over your body the following weeks.
Hyunjin, who included you in his New Yearâs Eve plans and kept you company the entire weekend Yeji and Chan were away.
Hyunjin, who made it known he missed being as close as you once got to be years ago and took the lead to propose picking up where you left off.
Hyunjin, the man who had spent the entire past month making your days better by simply texting or showing up at your place â being there for you even when you didnât need him to.
Had you really missed how much he was there for you? When was it that the roles reversed and he started to look after you instead?
You jumped when the microwave started beeping, letting you know the popcorn was ready. Shoving your phone into your pocket, you rushed to pour the popcorn into a bowl before making your way back into the living room.
Hyunjinâs head snapped in your direction, unable to hide his smile as soon as he saw you.
You gulped, trying your best to calm your heartbeats down before you took a seat next to him right as he placed the now empty mug on the coffee table. Maybe you shouldâve texted Chan later that night, when Hyunjin was back at his place and you wouldnât have to face him right away after being hit with so many questions.
âI was like one minute away from going over there to see what was taking you so longâ he confessed.
âJust making us a small snackâ you smiled cutely, shaking the bowl in your hands to make your point.
âIâm pretty sure popcorn takes like three minutes to make in the microwave,â he pointed out, shoving a single one into his mouth. âYou took like sevenâ.
You scoffed in amusement. âDid you set a timer or something?â
âNo, but I watched three whole movie trailers,â he admitted, earning a breathy laugh from you. âAnd that without counting the minutes I spent scrolling through movies to watch. Iâd say you took at least ten minutes, actuallyâ.
âDid you miss me that much to actually count the minutes?â You couldnât help but joke.
âWell, yesâ he answered with no hesitation, and no signs of joking either; very unfortunately for your already shaken up heart. âI told you earlier that I hadnât seen you all week and wanted to spend time with youâ.
âWeâve been together nearly all dayâ you reminded him sweetly.
âNot alone, thoughâ his words made you feel warm inside, like they seemed to be doing a lot lately. âItâs not the sameâ.
âSorry,â you pouted, and that was enough for him to melt. âI got kinda caught up texting and⌠here, Iâll just leave my phone on the table so weâll just focus on the movieâ.
Placing your phone next to his on the coffee table in front, you leaned back against the sofa, tilting your head up towards the TV, so heâd hit âplayâ and you could get started on your movie night.
When five seconds went by and he didnât move an inch, you focused your eyes on him instead.
âHyunie?â You called him, moving your hand in front of him to pull him out of his thoughts and smiling once you did. âEverything alright?â
âYeah, um, I justâŚâ he struggled, having his eyes going back to your phone. âWas it work related? Like, was it⌠was heâŚâ
âI was talking to Channieâ you clarified when you got what was going through his mind. âDonât be silly now, you really think Iâd spend ten minutes of my life texting my ex boyfriend?â
âI mean, you guys have a project together now, soâŚâ
âStill, we can just get it over with by emailâ you stood your ground. âI only spend that long texting people I actually enjoy talking toâ.
He smiled, happy to know you would usually spend that amount of time texting âif not moreâ and, therefore, he was one of those lucky ones you enjoyed talking to.
Beaming after that realisation, and with the possibility of you talking to your ex out of the way, he grabbed the remote and pointed it to the TV.
âIs this one okay?â He asked, motioning towards the title â10 Things I Hate About Youâ displayed on it.
You nodded quite effusively. âWhat are you waiting for, itâs one of my favouritesâ.
He bit his lip, but not even that was enough to hide the wide smile taking over his face as he leaned back against the couch as well and finally hit âplayâ. Of course he knew you loved that movie. He wasnât choosing one only he enjoyed after all, and maybe knowing youâd get happy about it was the reason he ended up going with this particular one.
To be fair, he knew heâd spend half of the movie looking at you instead anyway. It was quite cute how you wouldnât notice, being way too immersed in the plot you mustâve watched a hundred times by now.
Every now and then, he would reach for the popcorn at the same time as you, with the mere intention of his fingers faintly touching yours, but by the third time they touched and he got no reaction from you, he decided he wanted more â having your fingers touch without you noticing was not enough.
So, he slid slightly down the sofa, just enough for his face to be on the same level as yours, and then he rested his head on your shoulder.
That, you noticed. Hyunjin realised by the way your body tensed up under his touch.
And, for a moment there, he considered sitting up and going back to his previous position, hating the thought of his proximity making you feel uncomfortable; but you greatly surprised him by leaning your head on his before he could do so, silently letting him know right then that you did in fact enjoy being this close to him.
In the end, he had nothing to worry about when it came to touching you, for you had made it clear a while ago that it didnât bother you. But, then again, he wasnât sure whether you were only enduring it or actually enjoyed it. He didnât know which touches were okay and which ones were crossing the line. And the thing was, so far, you enjoyed every single kind of physical contact he had tried with you. They were all brief, innocent even, sweet.
Him leaning his head on your shoulder hadnât made you tense up because he crossed some kind of line, but because, unknown to him, your head was a complete mess right then. Unable to let your previous conversation with Chan go, you were now questioning the meaning behind this small action of his.
âConsidering whatâs currently going on between the two of youâ.
Was this what he meant by that? You and Hyunjin being this kind of close?
This was the first time he rested his head on your shoulder out of all the times youâd been sitting down on your couch just like this, and now you couldnât tell whether you were overthinking too much because of your friendâs words, or whether you wouldâve started overthinking just the same regardless of it.
Yes, he had held your hand before, but it was an act for the hotteok lady not to feel ashamed after thinking the two of you were a couple.
Yes, you had cuddled through the night on this very couch, but it was only because you passed out without either of you noticing.
Every other âmajorâ touch you shared had an excuse behind it. Hyunjin lying his head on your shoulder, however? It didnât have one. He just felt like it, wanted to be close to you. And ultimately you ended up giving in and resting your head on his simply because you felt like it, too. It felt nice. Regardless of the mess going on in your head, you wanted to be close to him, too.
Was it even an overthinking matter anyway? Friends did this all the time, right? Both you and Chan used to do it a lot before you and Mingyu started dating. You and Yeji still did it a lot, too, up to this day. Why did it suddenly feel different with Hyunjin?
Damn you, Bang Chan. You certainly didnât need this right now.
Once again, your thoughts were interrupted by a sound. This one was softer than your microwaveâs beep, though, more like a buzz coming from one of the phones on the coffee table. Considering your phone wasnât on silent mode right then, you knew it was Hyunjinâs.
âYour phone just buzzedâ you let him know when he wouldnât budge.
âLeave itâ he replied simply, shoving another handful of popcorn into his mouth.
âWhat if itâs important?â You wondered.
He sighed, already giving in â as easily as he always did when it came to you. âIâm too comfy, can you pass it to me?â
You nodded in a second, unable to hold back the chuckle that escaped your mouth when you leaned over to grab his phone and he followed your movement, as he refused to lift his head from its comfortable spot on your shoulder.
Just as you were back in your place and about to hand him his phone, though, its screen lit up, letting you see a single message from Dahye.
As soon as you saw it, you panicked, practically shoving the phone into Hyunjinâs hands.
âSorry, I shouldnât have read thatâ you apologised, shamefully looking away.
Hyunjin frowned, sitting up in clear alert before he could check what you were talking about. His eyes opened wide once he read Dahyeâs text and he immediately realised what it mustâve looked like to you.
It was a simple question: âAre you coming over tonight?â
No hello, no âHyunjinie~â; just straight to the point, which couldnât help but lead you to wonder whether texts like this and him going over to her place at night were an usual occurrence by now.
Hyunjin had told you all about her at New Yearâs Eve. From how they kissed when he was drunk to how she wouldnât leave him alone even years after it happened. He told you it was one sided, that he was tired of her constant insistence. But then why did that one text from her make it seem like that wasnât precisely the case?
Unlike him, you hadnât read Hanâs message following Dahyeâs, for it had just been delivered when he checked his phone right then. You hadnât read the one message that gave the whole context to Dahyeâs obscure text.
âShe means to the pregame,â he was fast to clear up. âHan just texted me and apparently weâre going to a noraebang tonight and pregaming at Haeunâs. Dahyeâs staying with her, soâŚâ
You nodded, feeling like you werenât in the place to say anything. It was his life, after all. He could be with whoever he wanted. He didnât owe you any explanations. Fuck, did you want any explanations?
You didnât know if you were feeling embarrassed for reading a text message that was supposed to be private, or if you were upset over the idea that Chan had just planted in your head being tainted not even an hour later.
Maybe youâd been thinking too much over something that wasnât even there, being influenced by your best friend and what he thought was going on between you and Hyunjin. Maybe it was nothing after all.
But you couldnât deny that you did feel quite uneasy over her text.
Were you upset that she was talking to him? Were you upset they were possibly hooking up? Was it being about Hyunjin you were upset about? Or were you just upset over how much the scene playing right in front of you resembled the times youâd just started questioning Mingyuâs relationship with Hayun while you were still together?
The times youâd catch the suspicious text messages popping up on his notifications, how nervous he would get and how he would start to throw excuse after excuse for you to believe he had nothing to do with her⌠You knew this feeling all too well, and you hated that you were feeling it again, with Hyunjin of all people, when you were not even together, you had no feelings for him as far as you knew, and, most importantly, you knew he was nothing like Mingyu at all.
And yet, here you were, feeling the goddamn lump in your throat you had felt one too many times by now because of a guy.
âY/N?â He brought you back to reality. He looked worried. âI promise it doesnât mean what it looked likeâ.
You had to hold back the hopeless laugh that threatened to escape your mouth at the sound of his words.
Words you had heard and decided to let pass way more times than you were proud of, and which brought you right back to the downfall of your last relationship.
You didnât know which one of your concerns had to do with the trauma of your past relationship and which ones were actually related to the current situation you had just found yourself in.
When did it all stop being about Mingyu and it started being about Hyunjin?
âItâs okayâ you gave him the most genuine smile you could give him, to let him know you were alright. Still, he didnât look convinced. âYou should get going, thoughâ.
âI mean it, thoughâ he pushed it when he could tell you werenât convinced. âYou can go through the tââ
âHyunie,â you cut him off, this time with a soft chuckle. âItâs okay. I believe youâ.
Did you?
âBut apparently there is a pregame taking place in a bit, so you should get goingâ.
âYou donât even know at what time it isâ he pouted.
âItâs a little past seven right now,â you pointed out, checking the time in your phone. âIâm guessing at seven thirty? Eight at most?â
Looking down to the group chat with his friends and realising you were right, he only made his pout more prominent.
âAm I right?â You wondered with a teasing smirk.
âYesâŚâ he let out a defeated sigh.
When you laughed triumphantly, he leaned in to rest his forehead on your shoulder.
âI donât wanna go yetâ he mumbled.
âYou have to if you wanna make it in time with your friendsâ.
âI can always just skip pregameâ he suggested, then sitting up again and looking at you with a mischievous smile. âOr skip night out as a wholeâ.
âYah, Hwang Hyunjinâ you scolded him. âYou are not pulling a New Yearâs Eve stunt on me againâ.
âA New Yearâs Eve stunt?â He wondered rather amusedly.
âYou know, when you said youâd only stay with me until midnight and then ended up not going back to your friends that nightâ you explained.
âThis is different, though. We had plans beforeâ.
âStaying on the couch watching movies with me canât even compete with going out with your friendsâ.
âNo, youâre rightâ he nodded. âIt canât compete because staying in with you would win every timeâ.
âHyunjinâŚâ you tried your best to sound stern and not melt over his words. âGoâ.
âButâŚâ
âIâm not letting you skip yet another night out with your friends because of meâ.
âCome with me then?â He asked with puppy eyes.
You were quick to look away, knowing well enough you would fall for his charms otherwise. âIâll have to pass this timeâ.
âIs it because of Dahye?â He carefully wondered, taking your following silence as a yes. âWe can skip pregame and then Iâll tell my friends to make up some excuse for her not to join us at noraebangâ.
âHyunjin,â you couldnât help but chuckle. âYou donât have to do that, just go have fun with themâ.
âBut I wanna be with youâ he pouted once more.
âHyunieâŚâ it sounded like you were begging by now. âThe movieâs about to end anywayâ.
âAnd we were supposed to watch another once once it didâ he reminded you, later allowing a taunting smirk to curve up his lips when a certain idea made it to his head. âAre you so set on making me leave right now because youâre afraid you might not want me to leave at all if I stay any longer?â
You snorted, playfully yet gently poking his forehead. âSomeoneâs gotten a little too cocky, donât you think?â
âAm I wrong, though?â He pushed it. âDo you really want me to go?â
âHm?â
âDo you want me to go?â He repeated.
âYour friendsââ
âThatâs not what Iâm asking youâ he cut you off. âYou have this really bad habit of always avoiding my questions, you know?â
You found yourself lowering your head, feeling oh-so-little under his piercing stare.
Although Hyunjin loved seeing you nervous because of him and it was a very rare occurrence coming from you, right then, he wanted your eyes on him. So, placing two fingers under your chin, he tilted your head back to his eye level â both of you only realising how close you actually were when your eyes met.
âItâs a simple yes or no questionâ he specified, gently removing a strand of hair from your face. âDo you want me to go?â
âNoâ you answered truthfully this time.
He smiled brightly.
âButâBUT,â you emphasized before he could celebrate, leaning slightly back and lifting your index finger for him to pay attention. âLike I said, Iâm not letting you bail on your friends again, there will come a time theyâll get tired of it. You deserve to let loose and have some fun only with themâ.
âBut we were supposed to hang out todayâŚâ
âAnd we did?â
He frowned, clearly not happy with your answer.
âCome onnn,â you tried your best to convince him. âWeâll hang out again tomorrow anywayâ.
âWe will?â He perked up instantly, enough to make you feel shy all over again.
âI mean, if you want to, of courseâŚâ you corrected yourself. You had really become that used to seeing him both days every weekend now for it to be more of a given, huh?
âI believe itâs pretty clear by now that I always want to hang out with youâ.
You tried to hold back a smile â needless to say, your efforts were miserable. âOkay then, weâll see each other tomorrowâ.
âOkay,â he smiled, satisfied with your new plans. âLetâs go out this time, since staying in is too boring for you nowâ.
âWhen did I ever say that?!â
âWhen you said that this,â he motioned around your place. âWasnât competition for a night outâ.
âThat is so not what I meant?â You argued.
âStill,â he laughed, eyes softening when they locked with yours. âIâm taking you out for lunch, okay?â
You smiled timidly, nodding your head. âLetâs see if youâre not too hungover first. Might have to end up taking care of you insteadâ.
âNow I might get blackout drunk just to have you taking care of me tomorrowâ.
You shook your head in disbelief, unable to hide your amusement as you looked away. âNever mind, I will be sending either Yeji or your mum insteadâ.
âIâm joking, Iâm jokingâ he laughed, looking for your eyes to lock with his again and gently grabbing your hands that were resting on your lap. âIâll behave. Just let me take you out for lunch tomorrow, hm? Just us twoâ.
Staring down at your hands in his warm, soft ones, you couldnât help but get invaded with more questions than answers.
It felt nice⌠being touched by him felt nice. Being close to him as a whole made you feel all warm inside. And he was right when he joked about you being scared you wouldnât want him to leave at all if he stayed any longer, because truth was you already didnât. You wanted him to stay, as close as you were minutes before.
Was it okay for you to be this close? Both physically and also emotionally? To the point of talking every single day and finding a way to see each other more than you saw your own best friends?
Did you enjoy his touch so much because it came from him? Or was it because you missed being touched?
Was he like this with everyone else? With Dahye? Anyone else at all? Did he treat you differently from them? Or was he just a flirty person and what you were now considering to be some kind of special treatment was just him acting the same as he did with every other girl?
Were you beginning to fall for him? Had you really been that oblivious to your own feelings? Or were you just looking too much into it now because of Chanâs influence, and mistaking a platonic âand rather strongâ connection for something more?
Would Yeji be okay with it?
Too many questions were invading your mind, one right after the other, and you couldnât find a single answer to any of them just yet.
However, although you didnât know what you were feeling and were unsure about what demons were from your past and which ones were new, you did know one thing for sure: You were never as happy as when you were with him.
So, with a soft smile and a nod of your head, pushing any other thought for later tonight when you went to bed, you said the only thing you could answer to his request right then. âOkayâ.

Ok, as much as I have been hyping and playing 12 hours a day since it got out (still in Act 1 though, bc I'm a slowass player and completionist), I feel like I have to say something that is getting hard to ignore at this point... and I wanna preface this by saying that I am loving a lot of aspects of the game and I adore the writing when it comes to the companions, who I am obsessed with.
And maybe this will get better yet, as I generally heard the writing picks up once the story progresses beyond picking up all companions..
But I'm starting to get quite upset at the way the writing just does NOT care about the established lore and the politics of Thedas like at all, when to me - and many others - that richness, nuance and depth of the world is what makes the games so special.
(Spoilers below)
I looked past the way the elves in Arlathan just seemed to know that their gods are evil and Solas is "kind of a dick" but was right about that. When, you know, that made him basically the Satan of their pantheon up to now.. It was after all the tutorial stage of the game and I understand that you wanna ease newcomers into the lore. I could also handwave it in-universe with Morrigan being there - she could have filled the Veiljumpers in on the discoveries of the Inquisition or even what the Well told her.
It felt a bit weird that our contacts in every other faction just accepted this huge revelation without a blink, but again it was the early stages and I also get that having a discussion about it 6 times with different faction leaders would have been incredibly tedious. So I ignored that. And yeah, at least the First Warden found it hard to swallow.
The fact that they brushed aside the gods finding elven subjects - many of whom after all still worship them - with one sentence from Solas was disappointing though. Instead they chose to ally them with the Venatori and the Antaam who are the pure evil factions with no nuance or motive to side with them besides a comic book level of hunger for power. They didn't even throw in a sentence about the gods maybe speaking to the Venatori through the Archdemons to get them on their side or how it's very ironic that the Venatori, who want to make Tevinter great again, stoop to working with the pantheon of the people they oppress because they see them as lesser and other. No political exploration of the massive lore implications at all.
It really hit me when I picked up Davrin and he commented how Elgar'nan and Ghilan'nain blighting the world would really endear us (elves) to the rest of Thedas - this was the first time anyone actually mentioned the political impact of the elven gods being real, freed, evil and blighted on modern day elves at all, when this should be HUGE. It should be ugly. It should be complex. It should be explored in as many examples as bloodmagic and the oppression of mages was in DA2. It should be a central point of Act 1. (This btw made me love Davrin so much in that moment because this was the first time in the game for me when I actually felt like talking to a Dragon Age elf and even just that one line felt like home.)
And now I just did Taash's first companion quest and it seems Qunari lore is also being ignored (except for the gender aspect of it, which I look forward to). Taash's mum was a scholar and had a baby and the only problem about that was that it could breathe fire and was special but otherwise all would have been dandy? Like she would have just been allowed to keep Taash long enough to find that out about her baby if she was living under the Qun? That directly contradicts everything we know about how the Qunari's culture around reproduction and childcare works.
Sorry to be negative and talking myself into a rage - I know it's not something people want to see rn. But like, I realise you have to brush over some lore intricacies for brevity and to make it digestible for new players. But this is a world initially inspired by Wheel of Time and ASOIAF, both of which are interesting because of the depth of ficitional cultures, lore and politics, and hence it's also what gives Dragon Age its appeal. And now they take us to the most politcally interesting areas on the world map and just get rid of all of political depth?
That's really disappointing. Imagine if Winds of Winter dropped all political themes just because there's several previous books and it's been some a lot of years.
Also, I managed to play DA2 before I ever played Origins and they could introduce me to a vast established background of lore just fine back then.
Sorry. Rant over. But I had to get that out of my system.

About the "kwamis as mentors" angle: Interesting to read and analyse, yet I can't help but feel they were not necessarily meant to be seen as mentors. At least to me, they seemed to be kind of whacky mascot characters who are tied to the lore, who have a personality to crack a joke or point something out or cause a little situation or be cute, but nothing more.
They are rather naive magical entities chained to jewelry (a fact they don't seem to mind that much or think about at all except for Plagg) and all that talk about "being around for 5000 years" and having seen many holders before is just there to make them seem more wise than they actually act like. From what I've seen on the show I would even assume there's a threshold to how much they can even mature emotionally and understand humans. Sometimes Tikki and Plagg even come off as indifferent and egoistical towards their holders (like an example you gave with Tikki, or Plagg's fixation on cheese over Adrien at times).
So...sorry if I missed it, but why do you view them as mentor characters? You made an interesting post about rom-com vs magical girl and the magical girl part is exactly why I always viewed them just as critters to appeal to kids, but nothing more. I can see that the show's writing is so inconsistent that sometimes they are portrayed as wise but more often then not they are just background noise to get a little interaction on screen so that the characters are not talking to themselves about miraculous stuff or to point something out for the audience.
The show's writing is pretty weird, so there are elements that are hard to get a clear read on. The Kwamis are one such element. When they're one-on-one with their chosen, they often feel like mentors to me. When they're all together, they almost always read like "critters to appeal to kids" (mostly because there are too many of them to let them have individual personalities when they're all together). So while I think that they're supposed to be mentors, it's not like that's the only canon-accurate read.
To dig into what I mean by the one-on-one writing, let's look at this exchange from Feast:
Master Fu:Â See, Wayzz? If Marinette had kept her Miraculous, the sentimonster would have swallowed her right up. Wayzz:Â Or she would have transformed into Ladybug and fought it. Master Fu:Â Sometimes fighting is futile, Wayzz.
And then later on we get this:
Wayzz: Master, look! Ladybug and Cat Noir, despite their ridiculous costumes, they haven't let you down! Wang Fu: That's impossible! They don't have their Miraculous! Wayzz: Master, it's obvious it's themâwho else would do something so crazy? Cat Noir (Adrien): Hey, have a taste of this! Some exploding banana split from Bananoir! Ladybug (Marinette): Much tastier than any Miraculous! Wayzz: Look, Master, there's no use in running! Your disciples never give up the fight, no matter what! With or without their Miraculous, they are Ladybug and Cat Noir!
That's some pretty active mentoring right there.
Wayzz is probably the character that feels the most like a mentor to me. When he's with Fu, he feels like Fu's partner or adviser, which is why I think that the Kwami's aren't supposed to just be cute critters. They're regular ol' Jimmy Crickets meant to act as a conscience that the characters can talk to since this is visual media and you want a way for the characters to talk through their thoughts instead of having them do it all internally.
I also present this exchange from Desperada as evidence:
Adrien: Plagg, Ladybug needs me. She needs "Adrien"! Plagg: If you asked me, this whole idea is worse than cheese in a can. Adrien: She thinks I'm the perfect guy for this mission. Plagg: You can't be Cat Noir and another superhero at the same time! Which means that you're not the perfect guy for this mission. Adrien: The Lucky Charm told her I am. Plagg: That's not how it works. Why am I bothering? You're not even listening.
We then get Plagg reiterating that this is a bad idea through multiple loops, ending with this:
Plagg: Ah! At last, you've come to your senses. Adrien: I'm not sure Ladybug will have very fond memories of her experience with "Adrien Agreste". Plagg: Then make up for it as Cat Noir.
See? I told you Plagg can be a good mentor when he wants to! Tikki, take notes!
I'd even call this bit from Sapitos some quality subtle mentoring from Trixx:
Alya: Oh please, Ladybug! We'd make a great team! I could help Cat Noir and you every day! Ladybug:(her earrings ring) I'm about to transform back! Hurry! Alya: Please? Ladybug: I have to go! I'm trusting you! (opens a nearby door and goes inside, so she can detransform) Trixx: You're absolutely right, Alya. I'm sure the three of you would make quite the team! You have all the makings of a true superhero. You're strong, brave; but most of all, you're trustworthy.
Way to both build Alya up and reminder her of her duty, Trixx. Gold star. Quality mentorship!
So are the Kwamis supposed to be mentors? Who knows! I just see them fill the role often enough to feel comfortable judging them through that lens.
Miraculous also isn't the only magical girl team show to make the cute critters into mentors. That's a pretty standard path even though it's also common to see the critters used to sell merch/appeal to kids and nothing more. In terms of classic magical girl team shows, I'd say that the Kwamis are written way more like Luna and Artemis from Sailor Moon than Mini Mew from Tokyo Mew Mew.

Hello Ghesties, Ghouls & Ghoulettes! Welcome to Angels run-down show-down, where I (Angel) do a run down of the Ghovie for all you lovely folk!!
Didnât get the chance to see the Ghovie aka Rite Here Rite Now? Fear not for I am here! This post will contain a run-down of what happened during the Ghovie.
So this is your warning:
âźď¸SPOILERS AHEAD âźď¸
I will be breaking this down into separate parts:
Lore: contains all lore that was mentioned
Songs: songs that were played
And Theatrics: stage play and other attributes that happened.
Another fair warning: there is a possibility that not everything that happened in the movie is noted here, I may have forgotten some things!! But I will do my best to include everythingđ¤
Additional notes: many fans including me were worried that this project would be incredibly low quality due to the fact itâs a movie operated by a band. More so worried that the movie would be the same quality as the YouTube episodes. I can confirm that the camera quality for this movie is amazing. You can compare the filmography to Taylor swifts era tour movie. Each shot for rite here rite now is shot with a high-to-low speed motion camera. The audio quality is above and beyond, even nihils ghost is very detailed and realistic. Every film shot is synchronized with the songs and instruments (example: camera changes for each beat/camera focuses on certain ghouls for their assigned solo)
Lore:
Story: the plot of the ghovie is a showcase of their Kia forum concert mixed with short lore scenes. Between every 2-3 songs there would be a scene of Copia running behind stage and talking with imperator and nihil OR getting dressed and ready for his next performance.
When he talked with imperator and nihil, he mostly talked to them about what would happen after the concert. Nihil and imperator told him numerous times that he was âfocusing to much on the past and future instead of living in the moment, living right here, right now.â
Copia realizes this before he does his encore, so he goes out and does a great encore assuming heâll soon die. After the encore and when the concert is finished, unfortunately imperator dies and gives a note to Copia.
The note states that he will not die, but rather be gifted a new higher status in the clergy. In which heâll further be known as Frater (Latin for brother, which makes sense if we think about the title for sister imperator). And because there is no head for the ghost project they will bring in a new front man. The movie ends before the front man is revealed and we are left on a cliffhanger.
The lore for the ghovie is very similar and the same to what we already know! Not to much was revealed but here were the key points of what was mentioned:
âď¸the other brothers were not directly mentioned or shown on camera. The only references to the other emeritus brothers was the backdrop for the stage (stained glass windows portraying the previous brothers & nihil)
âď¸it was confirmed that Nihil was copias father and that during the kiss the go-goat music video sister imperator was pregnant with Copia.
âď¸Copia even acknowledges nihil as his dad, in one scene where he says âthanks dadâ
âď¸sister imperator ends up passing at the end of the movie but becomes a spirit and is seen with the rest of the spirits (nihil and the twins, yes, the twins seem in the YouTube episodes apparently have died)
âď¸the ghouls were not to involved with the lore except for the fact they all surrounded imperators dead body when she passed. (Idk if this counts as lore but) the ghouls also talked in the movie, only for a small scene though. Bass ghoul (Rain) is the ghoul that talked.
âď¸nihil says that he produced three songs. The third song is the one we see during the credits. Song is : the future is a foreign land, as shown here:
SONGS:
The songs that played were the ones that were played at the Kia forum shows. Songs that where played included:
âĄď¸imperium (pre - opener)
âĄď¸Kaisarion (opener/curtain pull) (also if I remember correctly there was a short clip of a harp but Iâm not sure if it was being played or not during that song.)
âĄď¸rats
âĄď¸faith
âĄď¸spillways
âĄď¸Cirice (he ciriced the camera making it look like he Ciriced us)
âĄď¸Absolution
âĄď¸ritual
âĄď¸call me little sunshine
âĄď¸con clavi con dio
âĄď¸ watcher in the sky
âĄď¸ if you have ghosts (acoustic version with two cellos, violin & harp ghoulettes. As well as a background vocalist ghoulette who did absolutely amazing! Also papa gives a speech about how âeveryone is important and that their presence at that concert was inspiringâ)
âĄď¸dominion
âĄď¸ Twenties (body painted skeleton dancers came out and performed on stage, they did cartwheels, threw eachother around and even picked up cardi)
âĄď¸year zero
âĄď¸spoksonat
âĄď¸he is (I cried)
âĄď¸miasma (nihil told Copia that he didnât want to die, but even when he did he was still happy because he got to perform and bring joy to people temporarily when they revived him. Nihil also told Copia to focus on the good in life)
âĄď¸Mary on a cross (animated in a scooby-doo style, where nihil chases around imperator as she fights him and runs away)
âĄď¸ mummy dust
âĄď¸respite on the spitalfields (each ghoul/ghoulette got a solo)
âĄď¸ kiss the go-goat
âĄď¸dance macabre (skeleton dancers come out for a second time with silk fans)
âĄď¸square hammer
THEATRICS:
Some silly theatrics that happened include:
đCopia huffing the gas from a whip-cream can before performing.
đjumped in a storage transfer crate and had a whole convo with nihil.
đhas a the tour manager (Ashley) come out on stage and change his shoes for him.
đonly Copia can see the spirits of his family, so when he would talk to nihil or imperator, spectators around him would think heâs crazy and talking to himself.
đmany of the behind the scenes crew of the band were included in the movie such as : Ashley(tour manager), and many of the security guards & jesus( you know who lol)
đremember when everyone was freaking out about the fact thereâd be a blowjob reference? Yeah well there was no actual blow job scene, the warning for the blow job was for when Kyle aka Jesus came out and blew away the confetti.
đthere is also a scene at the end in which Copia is flying away from the concert (I guess thatâs his preferred way of transportation lol??) he is flying in the hot air balloon we see in the cover for rite here rite now. He flies into space before falling, ouch!
đduring his flight thereâs a montage of sister imperator being pregnant with him, during this montage we see twins. Twin babies, twin children. We are unsure if this is a reference to Tobiasâs twins or if Copia has a twin.
.
If I forgot to add anything or got info wrong please feel free to leave a comment and I will correct myself as fast as possible!!
Donât you feel it Angel? I doâĄď¸

Qualia and Ascension in Rain World
(To clarify I'm mostly talking about base-game lore and not including Downpour, but honestly most of these things can transfer over)
Qualia
One thing thatâs relatively hidden in Rain Worldâs text and subtext is the concept of qualia. Qualia is described as being, âsensory experiences that have distinctive subjective qualities but lack any meaning or external reference to the objects or events that cause them.â Itâs a personal sensory experience that cannot be comprehended by another person other than the individual themself, and are often hard to convey via language.
Qualia is a reoccurring motif in Rain World, but whatâs more important is the way in which itâs conveyed to the player. The picture thatâs painted is that of a world or civilization that placed a great importance on the individualsâ experience, and itâs shown through pearls or environmental details.
Here are some examples of qualia appearing in the text through pearls.
âIt's qualia, or a moment - a very short one. Someone is holding a black stone, and twisting it slightly as they drag their finger across the rough surface. The entire sequence is shorter than a heartbeat, but the resolution is extraordinary.â
âA memory... but not really visual, or even concrete, in its character. It reminds of the feeling of a warm wind, but not the physical feeling but the... inner feeling. I don't think it has much utility unless you are doing some very fringe Regeneraist research.â
âThis one... is authored by Five Pebbles, when he was young. There has been an attempt to scramble the data, but it's sloppily done, and most is still somewhat legible. It's written in internal language, or thoughts, so it is hard for me to translate so you would understand.â
But the most prominent examples of qualia and itâs importance in this world are the Memory Crypts and possibly ancient naming conventions. The deep purple pearl (shortened) found in Shaded Citadel states,
âIn this vessel is the living memories of Seventeen Axes, Fifteen Spoked Wheel, of the House of Braids (âŚ) Seventeen Axes, Fifteen Spoked Wheel nobly decided to ascend in the beginning of 1514.008, after graciously donating all (ALL!) earthly possessions to the local Iterator project (Unparalleled Innocence), and left these memories to be cherished by the carnal plane. The assorted memories and qualia include:â
Ancients likely mutated their own neural tissue into the cabinet beasts we see in Shaded, which were used to store their memories and qualia before ascension. Even james said once "how 5 pebs got the rot is a good hint here" in response to someone asking how cabinet beasts work, and how they're made.
Adding on to this, ancient (and iterator) naming conventions seem to be built off of the concept of qualia, with them focusing on individual images or experiences.
Nineteen Spades, Endless Reflections
Droplets upon Five Large Droplets
Two Sprouts, Twelve Brackets
Looks to the Moon
Generally, this all points to a world focused on the expression and preservation of the individual experience. You could even consider some of the echo dialogue as more evidence for this running motif, but I already have too many quotes lol.
Ascension
So now time to talk about my interpretation of ascension. In short, you turn into a worm, but I should probably explain more than that.
So its been surfacing on rw-tumblr that the light in the end of the game is called the egg in files. Although file names shouldn't be taken as fact or canon, it is pretty obvious given the birth imagery.
But something a little lesser known is what happens to the worm that takes us down to the void-sea depths. Void worms normally have a bright glowing effect, on their body, which is present for ours as well. But after it unhooks us, it swims down, and when it passes us on it's way back that glowing effect is gone.
To be honest, I don't really think this can be interpreted in many ways, but the most obvious one and the one I personally subscribe to is that the worm laid the egg. Biology and spirituality really aren't that different in Rain World, it's implied that karma is stored in the brain through Five Pebbles's slideshow. Adding on to that, we see voidspawn after eating an iterator neuron. One's spiritual state is innately tied to their mental state, and that dictates what and what they can't perceive.
And for that reason I decide to take a more biology leaning approach to what happens in the ending. At face value, we are fertilizing the egg of a void worm to be reborn into a voidspawn.
Not only do void spawn and void worms have multiple characteristics in common, (worm like bodies, tendrils/tentacles, glowing heads, void spawn look microbial and void worms are likely some of the oldest "life" in game)
but voidspawn are seen inside egg-like coverings and share the same egg light seen in the end of the game, confirmed to be the same thing by Videocult in a livestream they did.
I believe that all this points to ascension being re-birth into a voidspawn, which eventually undergoes metamorphose into a worm. Higher-dimensional beings, who manifest and give birth to a new world.
So how does this tie in with qualia? Another thing you might know is that the area in which void spawn are most plentiful is Shaded Citadel and areas in Shoreline near Shaded. And shaded is absolutely packed with Cabinet Beasts, even outside Memory Crypts. I believe these qualia-storing creatures are what manifest voidspawn.
From what we see in ascension, it still looks physical and largely based around the real world. Hunter still has his scars and see's an iterator, survivor sees the slug tree in a more mystical and formless state, and monk sees survivor frankly just looking like a normal slugcat. I think that ascension is a product of qualia. We transcend our earthly knowledge via the egg, and our own qualia is used to give birth to a new world. This is why voidspawn appear most in Shaded Citadel.
Now I won't be getting into Void-Worm theories too much here, I'm mostly focused on ascension but I can't ignore the Gnosticism parallels. For those who don't know, Void Worms heavily resemble the Yaldaboath from Gnosticism, along with sharing some similar celestial motifs.
and running with that some people theorize that, like the Yaldabaoth, void worms are responsible for manifesting the material world. Ascension seems to be a mix of the concepts of Gnosis and Nirvana, but I believe it might lean more on Gnosis.
From my limited knowledge, Gnosis is a few things, some of which being a state achieved from experiences or intuitions, and an essential part to salvation is personal knowledge. While researching a bit, I came across this text by Peter Wilberg called "From NEW AGE to NEW GNOSIS" which brings up some comparisons between Gnosticism and qualia as well.
"Gnosis is subjective knowledge of an inner universe made up not of matter, energy, space or time but of countless qualitative spheres or âplanesâ of awareness â a knowledge obtained directly through inter- subjective resonance. It is the subjective science of this inner universe."
One thing though that has been brought up when discussing this is how this can be consolidated with the tone of the ending. It is pretty un-ambiguously happy, but if we're going with the Void worm Yaldaboath theory then that would put a bit of a sour twist on it right?
I agreed with these for some time, but now I actually think it ties in perfectly with Rain World's core themes as stated by the devs, "overcoming differences and finding empathy." I don't think the void worms are "evil" or malevolent, but I think they (and subsequently us after ascending) play a key role in demonstrating this theme.
By manifesting the physical world, we allow these souls to experience life and develop their own qualia so one day they can ascend themselves. We are shown compassion, and pass it forward.

â
Caladan.
There is a beauty to it that you cannot deny. It's captivating from the very first glance. An indescribable sight, unparalleled to anywhere else in the universe.
Of all the worlds you could be in at this moment, a part of you is glad it's Caladan. In spite of the circumstances that brought you here, you try to be grateful for it. Surely, there are worse places to live on than this.
Here, the ocean is vast, stretching far beyond the starlit horizon. A fresh breeze carries the salty scent of the water towards you. It tickles your skin as if it were a feather, the light coolness sending goosebumps along your arms. You tug your shawl more closely around your shoulders.
It is far from the hot desert landscape you know and love. Despite its recent hardships, that planet was once home to you. It still is. You wonder how long it will be before you consider Caladan as such. It's been one week since your arrival, and you're in a period of adjustment, which in truth, has not been too easy.
The beach is empty, unsurprising as the moon has moved far past its highest point in the sky. You can't sleep. You haven't for so long. Similar to all the nights prior, you had tossed and turned endlessly under silken sheets before deciding to go for a walk. You found no comfort in your bed despite the mattress beneath you being the softest there ever was.
It could be the chambers themselves, surrounded by four dark walls that are still very much foreign to you. You must get used to it, you remind yourself. In fact, it's more than just a room that you must get used to.
Tomorrow, your life will change more than it already has when you moved to Caladan.
Tomorrow is the weddingâyour wedding. Many esteemed members of the Great Houses will be in attendance, alongside your closest family and friends, who are now worlds away from you. They will all be present to witness you exchange vows with Duke Leto Atreides, a man you barely know.
You exhale a deep, long sigh and draw your knees under your chin. Gentle waves lap onto the shore, the white foam almost reaching your toes before ebbing away. You watch in comfortable silence, the hypnotic rhythm of the waves creating a sense of calm.
Unwittingly, your mind combs through recent events. You spent plenty of these last few days surrounded by those more interested in your upcoming nuptials than you are. You've grown weary of feigning smiles every second in their company, of pretending to be okay when you are far from it.
You feel alone. You are alone.
Itâs a sacrificeâleaving behind the life you had to help your struggling home world. Things are changing faster than the time you have to process them. But you can't afford to waitâthe sooner you marry Leto, the sooner your father and your people's burdens will go away.
You are doing the right thing. The noble thing. It's what you were raised to do. The last thing you wish is to be seen as a disappointment.
Still, it doesn't mean you have your worries and doubts. You lack experience, having never courted someone before. You question whether or not you would be fit to be a wife to the stranger who is the Duke of Caladan. You're well aware of the responsibilities you would have to uphold, the expectation that one day you will need to bear him an heirâŚ
You shut your eyes, trying to push past the feeling of your heart starting to pick up and thud heavily against your ribs. But the pit of anxiety gnawing at your stomach grows and grows, and it's a losing battle. Not even the ocean waves that mesmerized you moments ago could distract you from the mounting panic inside.
Your thoughts batter you from within like a storm raging out of control. The pressure and expectations others have on youâ that you have on yourselfâ can't be stopped.Â
They're too loud; they refuse to be ignored this time around.
Your body trembles, your breaths are short and shallow, and it feels like you are drowning; you're helplessly caught in a dangerous current that pulls you under the water. The weight in your chest drags you down and deeper, sinking and sinking until you hit the very bottom of the depths of your own mind, deprived of any air, any light.
It's only until a voice calls out your name over and over again that you resurface. Warm, gentle hands urge you to sit right back up, and you don't have it in you to fight against them. You don't remember curling up on your side, wound in a tight little ball, nearly burrowing yourself into the sand bed as if wanting to be swallowed whole.
"Breathe, darling... Listen to my voice and just breathe, alright? One... two... three..."
You can't see him, not through the hot, stinging tears obscuring your eyes. But you can hear him. His voice's hazy, soft lull is strangely familiar, yet you cannot place whose it is.
He coaxes you repeatedly, and you focus on his words as if they are your one and only lifelineâas if they are the calming waves reaching the shoreline.Â
You do as he says. You breathe.
"One... two... three... That's it, my lady. Deep breaths for me, and againâ one... two... three... Good girl, and again. Breathe..."
You're unsure how long has passed by the time your heart slows, and your breathing evens out. Your blurred vision clears once your tears have settled, and your eyes widen when you recognize the face before you.
Duke Leto Atreides kneels beside you, dressed in a manner you have never seen him in. He has on a loose white shirt and dark lounge bottoms, his graying head of curls mussed by the wind blowing past.
You're uncertain why he's at the beach alone at this late hour despite being seemingly ready for bed. Perhaps concerned guards informed him of your wandering about the castle in the dead of night. Did he come all this way in search of you?
Letoâs dark eyes search your face for the reason of your distress. Embarrassment sweeps over your cheeksâ you cannot imagine how much of a pitiful mess you look. God, what if you've ruined it? What if seeing you this way, so weak, and frightened, and pathetic, has Leto wishing to rescind his agreement to marry you? What if, what ifâ
"Hey, shh⌠Relax. There is no need to fret," Leto soothes. He must have seen the worry in your eyes, but instead of ridicule as you anticipated, he looks at you with concern.
You cast your gaze down, catching sight of your hand in his. He hasn't let go of it since finding you, and when he notices your muscles tense up from the anxiety that seizes your body once more, he squeezes.
Leto squeezes your hand firmly but nowhere near the point of pain. His words are a quiet murmur in your ears. "Don't go back there, darling. Stay here, on this beach. Squeeze my hand back so I know you're here with me. Can you do that for me, please?"
With his other hand, Leto places a finger under your chin to tip it upwards, meeting your eyes. Again, he holds your hand tightly and brushes his thumb over your knuckles. You concentrate on him, matching your breaths to his. The tension starts to slip away bit by bit, and when it does, you finally squeeze his hand back.
"There you go. Just breathe, you're alright," Leto murmurs with a small smile. It dawns on you how close he is when the sound of the ocean becomes second to his voice. "Better?"
You swallow, then nod following a brief pause, not trusting yourself to speak.
Moving slowly so as not to startle you, Leto picks up your shawl from the ground, dusting it clean of grains of sand before draping it over your shoulders.
You expect him to leave, seeing you have regained some semblance of composure. You much prefer that he would. You can't handle explaining to Leto what was wrong. Is wrong.
The air turns silent as you face the water, wiping the dried-up tears from your cheeks with your fingers. You don't see Leto in your peripheral vision, but he's there, watching you. You can feel it.
"Here," you hear Leto say. Glancing to the side, you find him still sitting next to you. He offers his handkerchief, gently motioning it toward you when he senses your hesitation.
With the slightest smile, you accept the piece of cloth, whispering a "thanks" and looking away.Â
It occurs to you then that this is your first true moment with Leto. Before today, you had only seen glimpses of him. The most time you have spent with him was during your first encounter, and even then, it wasn't for long.
You chalked it up to Leto having no genuine interest in you. Why would he? He has duties that are much more pressing than entertaining you.
It's not much of a surprise. It would be wrong of you to expect for more. Ultimately, this marriage is not one for love but born out of necessity. A political alliance. A guarantee that your people will be well taken care of. That's the agreement.
Not to mention, you've heard themâ those hushed talks amongst the servants and guards about how Caladan does not stand to gain anything from the union.
They are not wrong; many have supposedly expressed concern, including members of the Duke's inner circle. You wonder if he will come to regret his decision one day.
"You've had quite a fright there."
Leto's voice cuts through the silence between you. He shuffles from behind, sitting where he can better see you. You stop yourself from glancing down; it would be rude, and you don't want to tarnish both your image and your family's name even more than you already have.
"I-I am deeply sorry, my lord. You shouldn't have to see that," you manage to get out, catching the way Leto's brows knit together in response.
"There's no shame in such. Why apologize?" he asks you in a soft tone. "And please, there's no need for formalities. Call me Leto. After all, we are betrothed to one another."
Your throat suddenly dries at the reminder that the man before you is your soon-to-be husband. You wring your hands in your lap and give him a nod, skirting from answering his earlier question.
Leto is quick to pick up your nervousness. You can almost see his brain working to piece it all together and grasp what was happening when he stumbled upon you.
You dread what words Leto might say, fearing they will be judgments made against you. You hide from his piercing stare, picking at your nails until a pair of rough yet gentle hands gathers yours, halting you.
Leto squeezes your hands softly, very much like he did before, and it soothes the part of you that has always ached but you could never get rid of.
"You do not have to carry your burdens alone, my lady," Leto murmurs, leaning to catch your eyes once more, and he does. "Whatever it is, unload it on me. Now, tell me what's wrong."
It's almost cruel that your instinct is to doubt him. But if the sincerity bleeding into his voice wasn't enough for you to give him a chance, then it's the tenderness in his gaze. You see the understanding in them, the concern and genuine desire to ease your troubles away.
Your initial perception of Leto has been wrong. You've been wary of him. Intimidated. But this is no man holding no care for you. He could have easily walked away after finding you amidst a fit. Instead, he stayed. He's here when you were convinced he would never find the time to be.
You open up to Leto like a floodgate, admitting to him the thoughts that plagued your mind from the day you learned about this marital arrangement, your nervousness for tomorrow's wedding and your fear of solitude in Caladan in the days that would follow.
You feel selfish, guilty even, for saying all of this out loud. You have no right to complain when the locals here have treated you with only kindness. Others would dream of being in your shoesâof living in a beautiful land, gaining an honorable title, and having a husband who would make you the envy of many.
Why must a blessing cause you great grief?
Leto listens to every word with undivided attention. He lets you speak freely and honestly, never once interfering between your sobs and sentences. He clears his throat only when the whispering waves of the ocean have lingered in the space between the two for some time.
"You are right when you said some of my advisors opposed me marrying you," Leto begins softly, gauging every bit of your reaction as he speaks. "They told me it would bring no benefit to House Atreidesâthat all we'll do is use up precious time and resources for a dying planet already beyond saving. Their words, not mine."
There is a quiet beat. Leto glances towards the horizon, where the first faint inklings of dawn break through the skies. He continues: "I realized then that those men do not uphold the same values I believe in. Caladan has more than enough riches to go around. There is no humanity in turning a blind eye to people's sufferingâespecially when we have it in our power to provide aid.
"I've had plenty of disagreements with my advisors, but I couldn't allow those without hearts to remain on my council. My lack of presence is not because I had no interest in getting to know you. Rather, I was ensuring those who showed little care for my bride and her ancestral land no longer served as advisors of mineâa task that regrettably stole time I would have spent with you."
You fall silent. The breath that leaves you seemingly takes more of the load on your being. Your respect for Leto grows. You see now the kind, thoughtful, benevolent man he is.Â
How could you have been so wrong about him? You'd been irrational, too assuming. So afraid he would turn out to be the complete opposite when he gave you no valid reason that he's such. You should not have been quick to judge his character when you had known nothing about him in the first place.
"I... thank you, my lorâLeto," you eventually say, turning to him. Shame and remorse cling to your tongue. "I am terribly sorry again. Had my mind been sound, I would've realized my distress is unwarranted."
"Nonsense. You're overwhelmed; your worries were reasonable. All I want is the two of us to be on the same page," Leto replies. The warm smile that adorns his lips when you correct yourself and address him by name lingers. âLet's start over, shall we then?"
You watch as he stands on his feet, reaching out his hand towards you. With Leto's help, you pull yourself up from the sandy floor, shaking off the pins and needles stinging your limbs. He holds his hand out once more, this time for a handshake.
"Hello, I am Leto and welcome to Caladan. It is a pleasure to meet you and an honor to have your presence here."
A smile blooms across your face as you shake his hand, formally introducing yourself to Leto the way he had. "I cannot thank you enough for agreeing to this. I, my father, and our people are eternally grateful for your generosity."
Leto makes a small bow of his head, capturing your hand between his own. Something inside you feels lighter now. The air around you, once thick like water, isn't anymore.
"You will no longer have to worry about your home world. I will make certain they receive all that they needâas for you, as well. I am here for you, even if it's simply as an ear to listen."
A pause. Leto's voice melts a touch softer. He looks at you with eyes deep and brown as the bark of a pine. "In a matter of hours, you and I will wed. It's merely for formality's sake. What goes on between us as husband and wife is nobody's business but ours. Please know that I ask for and expect nothing in return for agreeing to this arrangement. You will never be forced to do anything you do not wish to. Ever. Is that understood?"
You take in Leto's words, becoming aware of the unspoken ones, those hidden between the lines. Their implications settle on you, and you let out a quiet breath of relief into the air.
"I do," you assure before adding, for what could be the hundredth time since Leto has joined you, "Thank you."
âYouâre welcome, my lady.â
The sun peaks over the skyline, casting bright golden rays over Caladan. Leto briefly glances in the distance, the silver strands of his mane and beard catching the light, and they glimmer before your eyes. He smiles wide, the lines on his face crinkling as he watches the sunrise.
You also find yourself smiling, spending a moment more studying Leto's profile before turning to what's ahead of you.
Caladan takes your breath away, even more so in the daylight. You can fully appreciate it now that the storms in your mind have passed, and it's as clear as the skies.
"It's a beautiful day to get married." Leto remarks as the two of you gaze out to the water. After basking in the peaceful silence, he meets your eyes again, offering you his arm like a gentleman would. "Come, let me escort you back to your room. We both should rest up a bit before the festivities start."
Nodding in agreement, you quietly say goodbye to the ocean and allow Leto to guide you away from the beach. The sand beneath your shoes eventually turns to a rocky pathway at the foot of Castle Caladan, its grandeur towering over you.
A warm hand slips into yours.
"From now on, you will never feel alone," Leto says, pressing a soft squeeze to your hand. His hold is comforting, and reassuring. âYou will always have me at your side, darling. I promise you that."
You smile at Leto, feeling something tender unfold in your chest when he returns a smile of his own.
You believe him, and for once, you think you will be okay.
