hii i have written up comparisons on the 3 main neoclones <3 grundo's cafe is definitely my favorite overall but they all have their pros and cons

grundo's cafe

- start with 6 pets, more expensive to expand than the other neoclones (done through buying tokens) and that type of token increases in cost every time you buy them

- by far the best for games in terms of number of games, optimization for mobile, and np payout + gives random item prizes including paint brushes (high earnings per game and high np cap, able to get even more if you do neoschool)

- most frequent negative random events (maybe i am just unlucky?)

- pant devil attractors are a necessity with how often the wheels destroy your items (i don't think this is just me)

- can buy a shield to protect your pet/self from random events/color changes but it is a) expensive b) gets damaged over time if not equipped to a pet and c) has to be equipped to each pet if you ever want to have them active without risking them

- has by far the most extensive and engaging holiday events of the 3 (at least judging by the halloween events lol)

- no fanmade pets but has the most exclusive color options of the 3, lots of alts including older style art (downside is that it's much more expensive to get the alt art than it is on moderneo)

- only neoclone that has alts of even older art like the old jubjub and zafara

- pets can't have the same name

- most dailies and games have a chance to give you a relic which can be sold at a high price or exchanged for warehouse credits to buy items like alternative color and shield tokens (relics decently common, can usually get 1 or 2 per day through quests, less common through games)

- has a lot of fun unlockable site themes (plus a dark mode) and a useful extra sidebar but not as well optimized for mobile as virtupet (have to zoom in and scroll around some)

- doesn't have as many pages of employment center jobs as moderneo and the payout is lower - np reward for basic jobs seems to be mostly proportional to how many items are being asked for

- seems to have the most active users of the 3

- only neoclone with a functional auction house atm

- has neoschool where you pick a subject and then answer a question + bring random school supplies every day and then are rewarded with a relic (worth more than ones you get from dailies) and double items/np from games for a week

- can have up to 24 pets from the start and can get more with an item called animalis (only about 300k currently)

- not the best for games in terms of number of games, mobile optimization, and np payout (very low cap on max np and low earnings per game)

- best way to make np through games is tyranu evanu which has a higher max np cap but isn't the most fun to play imo

- most frequent positive random events (constantly finding np on the floor etc)

- has lots of fanmade pets (including my beloved motere) and some colors exclusive to moderneo

- also has alts exclusive to moderneo (including v nice color palette swaps)

- pets technically can't have the same name but there's an option to add zero width characters so you can still use whatever name you want

- much easier to please the 2 kings and significantly higher np payout

- not as well optimized for mobile as virtupet (have to zoom in and scroll around)

- best for employment agency jobs - each basic job gives at least 10k no matter how many items are being asked for, has the most pages of options

- can give one item to a pet to have visible on their lookup

- more active than virtupet but less active than grundo's cafe - good for being able to get morphing potions from the magic shop, bad for trying to sell stuff

- start with 8 pets, you can get extra pet slots through the virtupet mall where you can buy stuff with using virtugems and np

- you can get virtugems by crushing items (more valuable items are worth more)

- the cost of the extra pet slot item does increase every time you buy it

- has some exclusive colors (including a plushie lutari that i really really like)

- equal to grundo's cafe in terms of mobile optimization for games, has less games but still a good amount, highest np cap but lower earnings per game

- can fully disable random events that change your pet color

- best mobile layout (don't need to zoom in and scroll around like you do for the other neoclones) though worth noting that the neopets central bar is off at the moment (you have to tap an icon over to get to the right page)

- pets can have the same name

- can give multiple items to pets as treasure that is visible on their lookup

- only one page of options for jobs at the employment agency, lower payout than moderneo but doesn't seem to be proportional to how many items are being asked for basic jobs like how it is for grundo's cafe

- by far the smallest player base, i am often literally the only person online lol

- nearly impossible to get some items like a plushie paint brush (no one selling them)

so i have a designated side account where i store all my permanent pets who are NOT xweetoks, since i keep all my favorite xwees on my main. i have a free slot on that side though, but i can't decide which pet to send there...

the two current contenders are:

Noxioh the halloween grundo (i love halloween grundos and when they dropped the spooky tokens of them i KNEW i had to have one)

1925 the invisible zafara (i want to give this pet a custom based on the vocaloid song of the same name, which May involve morphing and repainting them)

As I thought about Neopians being "trans-species", for lack of a better term, I realized that Larcy Phu's name doesn't fit with the Grundo language as established in canon, namely it is lacking in "X"s and "Z"s.

Therefore, he probably used a morphing potion.

I would say "thats it that's the post" but I actually have a bonus headcanon:

If you are a Halloween Larcy truther like me, it is worth noting that White Grundo Morphing Potions do not exist in-game, but Halloween Grundo Morphing Potions do!

i probably should have posted this before applications opened and closed recently, but i got burned pretty bad by my experience with moderneo, in particular their community management, so i’m not likely to recommend it for other people to join. i’ve said this before i think, but i don’t bring it up often- some lovely people have made some great custom art assets for the site, so i don’t want to discredit their hard work, and i know other friends and mutuals have been having a fun time there and i don’t wanna rain on their parade. i also don’t wanna look petty about stuff that happened a couple years ago.

my tldr advice is: don’t pay for an account there, because its not worth it. if you wanna sign up when applications are open again, its possible to have some fun there with the custom pet species and colors, but i would avoid the discord server.

anyway if you’re interested, these were my issues:

the mods and site runner’s ‘No Drama’ policies that would come down harshest on whoever spoke up about a problem (people getting called bullies for asking a user to stop making fat jokes was a memorable example)

the site runner won’t replace even the worst of the old racist site assets, even with placeholder images, because nobody can agree on the best way to do it. so they’re just. still there. and he doesn’t personally see the problem or really want to change them. i guess they hue shifted the green witch halloween pets to purple though

the site runner responding very poorly to my request that he not make a lynching joke, saying I was the racist for finding it racially insensitive, and only apologizing after multiple people patiently explained the connotations to him

everyone acting like i was crazy and overreacting for saying that it was creepy as hell that there was a guy my age, going on about how sexy 15 year old mega man characters were, just going around unquestioned in the discord server (a few months later they were finally banned because a callout from the mega man fandom surfaced that backed up what i was saying even further, and also that this person had a history of stalking)

 they have blocked other creepy people since then, to their credit.  however, i feel like those people were pointed out very quickly, before they had time to interact with the site runner and other people and establish themselves in the community- the person i pointed out had been very talkative and had made friends before revealing things like ‘having a self insert to ship with the 8 year old from paw patrol’, so they sided with him when i said his behavior and artwork was creepy

those were my biggest bad experiences. but like. it also has less html5 games than grundos.cafe and virtu.pet (they’re also buggier earlier builds- the site runner either no longer has access to the newer updates and games that the grundos devs share, or isn’t interested in implementing them), albums were never implemented and are unlikely to be added anytime soon, the site runner has a patreon for the site but has largely stopped updating anything, all while only accepting new members through patreon payments for the majority of the year (also i think applications are closed indefinitely now?? so it might be the only way to join now???)

oh also the economy is really really bad

Nostalgia

I'm going to relive my history with the site a lil, but it's already running long, so I'll put it under a readmore.

When I was first told of Neopets in ~2000 I was frequenting a Digimon oekaki (drawing board) and drawing Lopmon/Floramon/Kiwimon with alarming regularity. I joined Neopets because friends on the oekaki asked me to. I made a blue shoyru, which I painted purple because I liked the user hrobi's purple shoyru Antorcha and the art on the site card for Antikia Lighten. I think at the time I thought the site made the card based on the user's pet.

I joined my friends' guild, and in a guild event I won a silver paint brush and re-painted my shoyru. It was actually pretty interesting, because I was trying to make her look mirror-shiny in art I made of her, and that taught me a lot about colouring. I played for a bit over a year. I legit talked about 9/11 as it happened in that guilds' lil chat area. I had to calm down an American kid who went by the name 'Piggy' because her parents were REALLY upset about it and she was panicking. And shortly after I lost interest and the login details.

When I came back March 1st 2002, I made my kuroi_muchi account but occasionally I would look up my first account. It was wiped in the purge, however. The first pet I made on my kuroi_muchi account was a gelert... But I didn't connect with the old gelert art and didn't feel inspired by it.. Also, I forgot to capitalise her name, and that bothered me. I pounded her. She still exists on-site, but now she's a Woodland Poogle. As I write this, she is 8005 days old, so she is almost 22 years old, like my account. Her owner plays semi-regularly, but was last spotted about three months ago.

I still have the second pet I ever made on my current main, but she's on a side account. She's a Halloween Aisha named Itla, and given I always drew the red 'outfit' as part of her fur I don't want to remove it to put other clothes on her... She was my first serious roleplay character (a demon catgirl RP'd on MSN messenger) and now I like to joke that she's happily retired.

Shortly after making kuroi_muchi, I found a Neopet-themed Oekaki called 'Sako's Oekaki'. This drawing board was accessed via Sako the then-shadow aisha's petpage. Sako's petpage is now a jumbled mess of broken script, but it mentions the Oekaki to this day.

My Halloween aisha was quite popular there! The board focused quite a bit on aishas and roleplay, as well as art. There was an ongoing theme with angel and demon aishas - and my Halloween girl was obviously one of the demons. I'm not even going to say it was cringe - we were kids playing with concepts of belief and morality. I feel like that's pretty important when you are developing your world views. I made a lot of very dear friends there. Actually, I met my first ever girlfriend there. Long distance, but cute and meaningful. One of my friends from that board wanted to make plushie pets together, to match. Plushie grundo/chomby MPs were under 100k np, so we made those. He made a grundo, and I made Kijiwa the plushie chomby. And I kinda fell in love with plushie neopets after that. I wanted to make more... but then conversion happened and they lost a lot of their charm, and gosh they were EXPENSIVE, so I didn't until much later.

When the purge happened a lot of people had long lists of names they wanted, but I only had one. My name is Rain, and I like birds, and I like the meaning of 'rainbird' - a bird that sings to warn of an incoming storm. Rainbird was the only name I grabbed when it was released, and they became the pet to represent me. For a while I lab zapped them, unsure what would work as 'me'... But I eventually decided that they had to be a bird, and I would acknowledge my love of plushies and try to draw them the way they should look. So Rainbird is a plushie bruce. If Toy had been around I might have been tempted, to be honest! But I quite enjoy my fat purple penguin.

Rainbird is female on-site (but uses they/them) because I made them before my own public transition. It's one of the few things I might like to change, if it becomes easier/cheaper in the future. I am aligned more with masculinity than femininity, but... Well, it's fine to have little markers of how I've grown. Hell, I 'announced' my transition subtly with art of Rainbird. Before the pride flags were added to the site, and when discussion of the subject was against the rules. I wasn't discussing it, though. I just... drew a bruce wearing a bow.

I think I won a gold BC trophy for this picture.

It's probably silly that I can connect a lot of memories to a pet site. It's probably silly that I have a rainbow chomby plushie on my desk right now, when I'm in my mid-30s. It's probably silly how sentimental I'm feeling about all this. It's probably silly to be running a blog dedicated to a 25 year old site and the art that people make based on it. Sometimes it's nice to be silly.

This year I made Teald - based on an OC I have been writing and roleplaying for years. It felt like coming back, looping around to something familiar. I will take inspiration from strange places, and I will bring my inspiration back to places I know. I am glad the NCUCs came back - realistically, that faerie lenny mp probably would have sat in my SDB for years more. I just don't like the converted lenny art. But I knew that if Teal was anything, they'd be a faerie lenny.

I don't know why I felt like sharing all of this. Perhaps this too is a little marker I am leaving online, so I can look at it years from now and remember. If you read it all... well, thanks. The final Halloween post, my pets based on... assorted concepts! Here we have Hola_Blu_Kackeek, Nero_Don_Lino, squareroot, and Viris551! This... was a difficult one.

Hola and Nero were both adopted, so I didn't come up with their names, and their personality inspirations are just "artist" and "biker" which is already represented as best they can be in their main designs. So Hola's costume is a blue kacheek, and Nero's is a weirdly floral Emperor Nero.

Root is a pun, with both math and tree theming. Specifically, the Brain Tree, as the smartest and most Halloween-y of trees.

Viris is based on me frantically reading the Wikipedia article "Timeline of computer viruses and worms" and coming across the term for a rabbit virus, a virus that replicates itself quickly to overwhelm a system, hence the wild amount of grundos and the fire in the background (from the system overheating).

Robot Bori- Nice colors, nice design, incredibly cute face. i just love it. those little laser gun ears and tail with the rings are great whimsical touches

Woodland Bori- this is such a nice color, using jaggedy looking rocks for back plates was a great idea that ends up looking really good

Chocolate Bori- lovely shades of brown, the whipped cream looks nice, and the candy corn claws are very cute

Christmas Bori- great wintergreen looking color scheme, this is one of the nicer looking Christmas pets and one of the ones where you can very easily adapt it into a non-Christmas themed design through customization. i’m not sure the thicker fur on the legs actually translated over very well from the pre-conversion design, but I can forgive that

Halloween Bori- REALLY sick, love that the claws and skeletal armor are actually wearables that you can use in Halloween crosspaints for other colors, and that black and red color scheme works really well here

Mutant Bori- I just think its neat- one of the mutant pets that’s basically the same as the UC version, plus its just a really cute design

Plushie Bori- I LOVE the colors for the Plushie Bori, so even though its not quite as cute as the pre-conversion one, the new one is still what I’d consider one of the best Bori colors. Its also an instance where changing the direction of the eyes ends up looking cute and good!! 

Darigan Bori- a significant downgrade from pre-conversion Darigan Bori, but still is a nice shade of blue, has those sick looking spikes on the shell, and has a cute enough expression!

Faerie Bori- I’ve always loved this design, and even though this is yet another Bori where its definitely been downgraded post-customization, its still got the lovely colors and the unique wing design!!

Marble Bori- So this doesn’t read super clearly, but I really like blue, especially paired with yellow, and I think it has a cool swirly look to it

bonus:

the pre-conversion Darigan Bori had it all: sick design, cool pose, spiky, and expressive. RIP

the pre conversion Faerie Bori was absolutely one of my childhood dream pets, and I still think its absolutely precious

awww look at the old Plushie Bori’s little heart shaped pawpads... REALLY cute

the Robot Bori was a little less bulky pre-customization, but otherwise very similar, and I love it too

the Tyrannian Bori is cool. i like ankylosaurs. i would have maybe preferred if it was a little less mammalian, but i can’t complain too much, its neat

i forgot to do this for the blumaroo but here’s my least favorite bori color:

its speckled again :( 

i almost put dimensional here instead and wrote a whole thing about how i didn’t like how blown out it was, but then i realized that at least you could maybe use that for some weird angelic customizations... i think what bothers me more about this one is both the extremely small speckles again, and more importantly, how the shadowed parts have less contrast between the speckles and the green than the unshaded parts. its just a REALLY bad and weird look.

and its a bummer because i think speckled can be really cute!! i love the speckled Blumaroo, and the speckled Grundo... this one just really misses the mark

also because i forgot it last time, my least favorite Blumaroo is Christmas. its a close call between Christmas, Disco, and Dimensional though, i think those all really are a miss for me

SO I see your posts and art around the tag sometimes and I rly wanna know more about your neopets characters particularly K-422 (I think is correct numbers?? Your blue acara with the black hands!)

Yep you’re right! Well to start out…

More under the cut! Might get long–

As said in a previous post, K-422 (or just K is fine, Eroux will usually call her that) is supposed to be a rejected experiment of Dr. Sloth (not canon to his story or the neopets site but y’know this kind of stuff is fun to make up and I needed a somewhat good reason to make her a little….alien-esque. :’D ). *The experiment was a mind to body transfer, but unfortunately she can’t recall much of who or what she used to be (not that she cares much tbh) and while Eroux probably has an idea on who she was she never bothered asking him. So was she a human??? Was she another grundo???????  She was considered a failure however because after the transfer was completed, there was no signs of a reaction from her so she was assumed dead and left to soak in a tube. Truth being she was possibly in a deep sleep/coma.

Her other interests such as a love for space and…..grundos, may have been related, or she can just like them because space is cool af I mean gosh dang it’s pretty and the Grundos are cool/cute and whatnot– As for her opinions on Dr. Sloth….

~~~ONTO THE PRESENT~~~

Currently she and Eroux are living with Vermithias (a Pirate Eyrie), Koz (To-be-Halloween Hissi), and Maxwell (Ghost Kyrii) in Altador who were willing to take them in after their sudden arrival.

The “422″ in her name could be her experimental number. And the ‘K’ might just be the category she was in.

K-422 is actually reserved and shy around new faces but she’ll warm up rather quickly so in one second she can be all “//waves in the distance” and the next she’ll be all “HI WANNA WATCH ME EAT THIS DIRT”. In “other” situations she may attempt to hide behind something or Eroux or panic a little, or act overly excited.

She’s also a bit self-conscious about her wild wiggly wavy wacky taffy arms but she’s grown used to them (helps reach the top shelf wink wink).

She uses art to express herself a lot and loves to listen to music, especially excitable or dance music, makes her PUMPED.
