You got mr psaltarian headcanons to work with?

yes. maybe. sort of.

- grew up satanist, both of his parents were involved in the church but not the los angeles chapter. was more familiar with older forms of satanic worship before the church was modernized after the passing of papa -1 and the convent aligned more with puritan depictions of satanism (very ritualistic and coven-like, the sort of stuff that imperator preaches about which is why they get along so well later in life). is the oldest child and has a younger sister. doesn’t really talk to his family much anymore at no fault of any of them, he’s just a busy guy and it caused a bit of a drift in those relationships.

- met sister imperator when they were both novitiates after he was moved to the LA seminary (within the abbey there). the combined power of their autism and love of satan made them as close as they could be. sister wouldn’t take her vows for another year after psaltarian became a priest but they remained close and definitely were discussing their visions for the church privately until they both would eventually take up clergy positions.

- actually was a priest at the LA chapter for a decent amount of time (pre-nihil) before he was eventually pushed into the more archivist position he still works as now. a wise man here on tumblr dot com once pointed out that psaltarian’s name implies that he’s a historian-esque figure or at least is just aware of everything happening. he’s lurking and he’s stalking when you least expect it i guess (?)

- adding on 2 that. he’s manipulative in a really quiet way, it’s got an air of subtlety that sister imperator doesn’t have. psaltarian doesn’t Pretend to be people’s friends, he literally dgaf about what others think of him but he is very good at presenting himself as a trustworthy figure which makes it easy for people to open up to him. which is most often against his will but whatever. you know damn well he didn’t want to hear nihil writing a dumbass breakup track but it helped him become aware of her sudden disappearance which would be of interest to the unseen clergy (satan himself probably. maybe. if the olde one has enough time to give sister a get well call i assume he could be in cahoots with psaltarian)

- he’s a victim of resting bitch face, he isn’t always that stern. has a physical aversion to touch but there’s a part of him that does want that sort of intimacy, it just takes more work for him to be fine with it mentally.

- for 60s music i use the wanderer by dion (elaboration in the next section) for psaltarian inspo but for modern music i think the devil (didn’t make me do it) by twin temple is a good song for him.

- i need to clarify that psaltarian is as much of a fuckboy as nihil is. but he actually uses his brain which is where they’re different. i think he has a harder time forming attachments so he isn’t doing whatever villainous bs nihil is on by having several girlfriends at once. he’ll have the occasional fuck buddy he convenes with whenever the mood strikes him and semi-frequent sporadic hookups when he’s at a bar or orgy or whatever the hell satanic social events look like for the ghost church. anyways he fucks and sucks but he is responsible and not a complete dickwad about it.

- literally poured his life savings into that damn beach house because he was so intent on retiring there. part of his 50 year plan. and by god did he live by that, it’s probably one of the things he’s proudest of even.

- genuinely loves his job and satan and their religion and their church and. yeah. he just can’t stand the drama sometimes which is why he lives an hour or so away. prays several times a day, keeps a copy of the satanic bible in his bedside drawer, and will occasionally fill in for sermons when he’s needed.

Something interesting I've noticed.

All the characters in the Veilguard assume that Spite is a senselessly destructive problem gremlin, and that Lucanis is reining him in and preventing him from causing harm. Lucanis himself is very insistent that this is the case, and many fans are already accepting this idea as fact. But if you pay attention to Spite's behavior, the reverse is actually true!

Since Dragon Age's handling of mages, demons, and spirits has always invited players to use critical thinking and notice where the characters' cultural biases and prejudices don't line up with what's actually happening, I do think it's weird how few people are talking about this. I suppose it might be possible to miss, if you haven't seen the end of Lucanis' storyline yet and aren't paying close attention to Spite. But even before the scene where Spite's intentions are revealed, there are plenty of clues that he isn't as much of a danger as Lucanis fears.

Once you do reach that scene, it's pretty clearly revealed that Spite has been trying to keep Lucanis' self-destructive behavior in check all along. His efforts were dismissed as troublemaking by the team, but he's actually trying to look after Lucanis, in his weird demon-y way. However, even before his true goal is revealed, Spite's behavior is always consistent with that goal, not with the generic malevolence that Lucanis and some of the other companions ascribe to him. He typically isn't hostile towards anyone Lucanis isn't, with only one major exception. Spite is a bit more emotionally reactive and vindictive than Lucanis, for sure. Lucanis comparing him to a child throwing a tantrum certainly seems to ring true. But he doesn't do pointlessly evil things for no reason.

(That one exception was obviously unusual, too. That dude did something very blatantly rude, which provoked Spite. It was genuine douchebag behavior, and he had bad vibes and needed to get his ass kicked anyway. Spite's violent response was likely an overreaction, based on the information he had at the time, but he was still reacting to someone else's actions, not just randomly turning hostile.)

Of course, you could argue that Spite is acting out of self-interest, since everything that happens to Lucanis also happens to him. However, practically speaking, I don't think that matters very much. Their priorities align a lot, way more than Lucanis realizes they do. Lucanis and Spite share a common interest in survival, something Lucanis himself will point out shortly after you recruit him, and they grow to become a true team with shared goals by the end of their storyline. Under such circumstances, it seems a little pointless to try to distinguish whether Spite is being selfish or genuinely cares for Lucanis. Both amount to the same thing in the end.

In all three previous Dragon Age games, we hear Thedosians assume demons always want indiscriminate violence and can't be reasoned with or appeased, and in all three previous Dragon Age games, we repeatedly see this assumption proven wrong. It's at best a flawed guideline based on edge cases, or at worst, a hateful stereotype. Lucanis claims Spite can't be negotiated with, that "talk doesn't work on Spite" because of his fundamental nature. But by the end of the storyline, talking to Spite and reaching a verbal agreement is actually the only thing that successfully resolves Lucanis' conflict with him!

I don't think it's a stretch to suggest that Lucanis is simply wrong about how demons work. He's ashamed, scared, and traumatized by his experience in the Ossuary, which makes him prone to to intrusive ruminations about potential worst-case scenarios. And since he's not a mage, he is, through no fault of his own, practically guaranteed to be ignorant on this topic. Even many mages don't understand demons very well. It takes a specialist in spirit magic to explain certain things, as we saw in Inquisition with Cole and Solas. Lucanis is perfectly poised to have basically zero factual information about demons, but a ton of cultural and personal reasons to vilify his new possessed self. Considering this context, it really seems odd that fans are interpreting Lucanis' statements about Spite as unbiased narrative fact.

Then again, this is the same fandom where a lot of people apparently still think Fenris' mansion formerly belonged to Danarius. Fenris mistakenly thought it did in Act I, but he later explicitly corrects his mistake aloud! (As Fenris explains, Danarius was only staying there as a guest. The house actually belonged to a merchant who was an acquaintance of his.) So maybe I'm just overly optimistic about how much detail is going to stick for people. These games have a lot going on in them, after all, so I guess it's inevitable for people to miss some things.

Lemon Tea; What are Mornings like with them?

Tomura isn’t much of a sleeper— so mornings together tend to be rare and far between— but when he actually manages to sleep a full eight hours, the mornings you have together are very peaceful.

He isn’t a morning person by any means. He’s groggy, grumpy and completely nonverbal for the first hour or more. With you he can loosen up a bit, sliding his cold hands and feet into your general space, switching fingers every few minutes just to make sure they’re all warming up properly.

Some mornings he’ll wrap you in a bear hug that your absolutely positive could crack a few ribs— though you love it all the same.

This is the time you two have just to yourselves— no league, no missions, no plans for world domination— just two people laying in bed waiting for the sun to fully rise.

Peppermint tea; What do they get excited about?

A pretty obvious answer would be video games, but in all honesty, Tomura loves to talk.

To speak and be heard, to engage in conversation and bounce ideas back and forth— that’s what really gets him going. He loves to plot, to scheme and gossip about anything and everything.

Outwardly it’ll be nearly impossible to tell, he really isn’t the kind of guy who would let anyone know something this personal (so vulnerable), though everyone notices the spark in his eyes when he really gets going on a topic he’s passionate about.

If you were to ask follow up questions, to engage yourself fully in his monologues and spiels, it’s just like giving a kid a candy bar.

And if you were to get angry for him?? To enrage yourself over anything he may say, to become furious at the same situation or person he hates so much— it’s almost enough to fully break his cover.

It’s one thing for him to be elated over the prospect of another person feeling his rage, but it’s another entirely if he starts to feel yours. Stupid highschool bully stories, that one girl in band class that broke your flute— it doesn’t matter— he’ll start eating it up as if he hasn’t had a meal in years.

Chamomile tea; What is their sleep schedule like? Does it change around their s/o?

To put it bluntly, Tomura doesn’t have a sleep schedule— he sleeps when his body gives out.

Even before his memories had re-emerged, blotchy nightmares plagued him. Every morning he’d wake up sick to his stomach, the itch under his skin growing by the millisecond. So— he learned to adapt.

2-3 hour power naps kept the nightmares at bay and gave him enough stamina for whatever was to come. His lack of sleep was a large driving force in his erratic behavior early on, grumpy and irritable.

With you though, he finds the nightmares to be less oppressive. He still doesn’t sleep enough, but he finds that taking a couple days out of the week to rest fully isn’t so bad.

If he has a nightmare, the cycle will break back to its bare bones and it’ll take awhile to resurface. As long as you’re patient and as long as he’s willing, he’ll be back to sleeping properly.

Though as a whole, it could take years before he’s ready to sleep regularly again.

Earl grey tea; How did they court their s/o?

He didn’t. He isn’t a romantic— he honestly hated you when he started to feel more than just average companionship towards you.

Not a single bushel of roses were bought, no dates were had— hell— you didn’t even know you were together until about a month in when he got pissed at you for getting injured!

“If you ever do that again we’re breaking up.”

Any confusion would only piss him off more— giving you the silent treatment for a few days before he’d finally cave in with some very dead and very wilted wild flowers in hand.

“What is this??”

“Shut the fuck up and take them.”

He honestly just decides that you’re the one he wants— it doesn’t really matter to him how you feel about it.

Milk tea; What are their kisses like?

At first, Tomura’s kisses are gentle, childlike and timid— like he isn’t sure what exactly he’s supposed to be doing.

Then— they become untamed— sloppy and harsh. He bites and slobbers, prods and maims, anything to get as close to you as possible.

He won’t kiss you unless you’re completely alone, far away from any prying eyes and peaked interests. He’s not going to show that part of himself to anyone but you.

Teeth and tongue, cracked lips that— if chapped enough— can cut into your own. Kissing is a frenzy, very rarely will you ever get a soft peck or a loving press of his lips onto yours.

Coffee; Do they get jealous easily? How do they show it?

Absolutely. Tomura— even as a rising symbol of fear— is extremely self conscious.

He’d never let you leave— as stated above— he didn’t even really give you a choice when it came to being together in the first place.

But even so, the insecurity of you looking away from him, finding someone better or more handsome— it makes his blood run cold.

If there’s someone who touches you and lingers a little too long, if there’s someone you smile at a little too brightly, he’s not above taking their life. Of course it always starts with a threat, either to them or to you.

He wants you to tell him you’ll never leave, he wants you to crumble and cry and tell him everything is exactly as it should be. He is not a kind man, and in times like these it becomes ever apparent that he never will be.

Tomura protects what’s his, and even with free will, you belong to him whether you like it or not.

Rosehip tea; How romantic are they? How do they show affection?

Tomura isn’t romantic. At least not in the traditional sense. You can tell he cares by the look in his eyes or his apprehensive nature towards your roll in whatever the league may be doing next.

He keeps you away from danger, even though he, himself, is the biggest danger to you.

If you were to ask for something— anything— he would get it for you. He’s very straight forward, and he wants the people he cares about to able to do, and have whatever they want.

His love language is physical touch, and even though he keeps all the affection he has for you behind closed doors— as soon as those doors are closed, he’s all over you.

Running his hands up and down your stomach, gripping at the squish on your thighs, shoving his head into the crook of your neck, palming your breasts just to remember the feel of them.

He treats you like a fragile porcelain doll.

Black tea; What do they look for in a person?

Honestly he wasn’t looking. The concept of romance was completely uninteresting to him— he didn’t want anyone and he didn’t need anyone— he was completely fine on his own.

Though, he wouldn’t date a fellow villain— at least not one notable enough to be a threat. Tomura doesn’t do well with competition, he loathes the thought of racing to the top, he just wants to be there.

Finding a person who he can corrupt, who he can make his own— is something he’d enjoy greatly. That’s not to say he couldn’t fall for a league member, but it wouldn’t be someone worth his time— at least not in the beginning.

He wants a person he can talk to, touch, and unload upon. Someone who will remain consistent and stick by his side no matter what the cost may be.

Although romance isn’t his forte, and finding someone to love wasn’t something he had ever envisioned, he wants someone he can be with for life.

Pomegranate tea; At what point did they know they loved their s/o?

Truth be told Tomura was wrapped around your finger from the moment he decided he wanted you— though it didn’t fully kick in until a few months into your relationship.

You were in a fight— it was over something stupid that any other couple could’ve resolved within the day— looking back neither of you could even remember what it was about.

He was pissed, stomping around, seething and destroying anything he could get his hands on. He wanted to yell at you, to scream in your face and make sure you know this was your fault. But he couldn’t bring himself to do it.

Gradually, as the days passed and he became less and less bothered by whatever the two of you had disagreed on— he realized he wasn’t itchy.

He still had those rising tingles under his skin and he still had to rub away his discomfort from day to day life— but this argument, the infuriating way you had made him feel— it did nothing to his sensitive skin.

Slowly it became apparent that he hadn’t needed to dig into his skin at all. He was angry, he was upset and borderline furious with you— but he was comfortable.

For the first time in his life he was able to feel negativity without the pull of fire ants under his skin. That’s when he realized for sure— that he was absolutely, without a doubt, in love with you.

The villain life has no room for any sort of eloping or marriage— so he doesn’t ever really propose.

Sooner or later you just start to feel like a married couple.

You bicker and fight, you sleep together and sneak away to have alone time. The love he has for you starts seeping out more, he becomes a new version of himself just for you.

Then, once the Paranormal Liberation Front is active, Re-Destro asks about your partnership. It’s a simple question, curious and wide eyed.

“Who is this girl to you?”

It makes sense given the environment— you were not nominated as a lieutenant, though you stood by Tomura’s side like a shadow, waiting and watching— clearly in the ranks but with no flashy title to show for it.

And then, as if it were as simple as breathing, Tomura calls you his wife. Telling anyone who was around that he was the King, and by default you were the Queen.

Chai Tea; How do they spice up their relationship?

All in all, Tomura is a pretty boring guy. He drinks straight black coffee, plays video games and broods in silence 90% of the time.

Though, when it comes to you, he does try to make an effort. He’ll try out the games you like or your hobbies, and he’ll introduce you to his own in return.

He’ll teach you how to play chess, and that will inevitably turn into tradition. Once a week (if time will allow) you’ll sit down together, play a few games and just talk.

In the underworld, romance never will be easy to manage, and even though you make his days a little brighter, you’ll never be his top priority. World destruction won’t happen on its own, and nothing in his life will override his goals.

But these special little moments between the two of you are by far the best part of anything he’s ever going to accomplish.

The bedroom. As stated, Tomura isn’t a very outgoing person— he won’t take you out on dates or walks in the park.

But he will sit with you in a dark room, watch movies and eat junk. (Bonus points if there’s a blow job thrown in)

His favorite place to be with you, is when you’re alone and secluded. He wants to touch you freely, to run his lips down your throat and hold you close to his chest.

He wants to grab you, to hold and be held. To feel the warmth of your body completely engulfing his own.

Truly, his favorite place to be, is wherever you’ll allow.

He really doesn’t. Tomura has absolutely no idea how to deal with you when you’re upset.

If you’re angry he’ll get angry with you! He’ll wind you up and let you take it all out on whatever you so please. (as long as it isn’t him)

Expect absolutely nothing in regard to his comforting abilities. He might take you to the side and ask you what’s wrong, he may even give you an awkward hug! But that’s really all he’ll be able to do.

If you ask for space he’ll give it to you, if you ask for cuddles he’ll do his best! But overall, you’re the one who has to call the shots, and depending on what’s going on, he may just leave you to deal with it yourself. Because as stated above— regardless of how wonderful you are— you are not his top priority.

NOT AT ALL. You are his first (and final) attempt at love. You’re going to get all of his fuck ups, all of his learning curves and all of his shitty disposition.

He has no idea what he’s doing, and even years down the line he still won’t fully understand. Caring for another person isn’t the most insane thing in the world— he cares for the league and it works out fine!

But loving someone?? It’s just too overwhelming at times. Taking your needs into consideration without being asked, figuring out what you enjoy and how he can add that into his already insane schedule— it’s maddening.

You’re his first everything, and you’re just going to have to be okay with that— because you’re stuck with him whether you like it or not!

English breakfast tea; Would they want a family?

Tomura wasn’t even looking for love when he found it— let alone a family.

I really doubt he ever thinks about it at all, he’s never been someone who cared much about what the future would bring.

That isn’t to say if you wanted a family he wouldn’t cave. He wants the people he cares about to have and do whatever they want— if for you that means starting a family with him— he’s not opposed to it.

It wouldn’t be cut and dry though, and if you never pipe up with the interest he isn’t going to either.

If you do bring it up, he’d ask a lot of follow up questions. Such as,

“Why?”

Or

“What’s the point?”

He really wouldn’t know what to do if that situation occurred, but he wouldn’t say no— he may just need to think on it for a while.

If you were to become pregnant, be it a broken condom or failed birth control— he wouldn’t ask you to terminate. You belong to him— yes— but part of being in his grasp is being able to live your life any way you want. Aside from hero work or leaving him there aren’t many restrictions.

If push comes to shove he’d enjoy having a little family of his own! Seeing himself mixed with you in a smaller, separate, body— creating something after destroying so much. It would be one of the steepest learning curves he’s ever experienced, and he wouldn’t be the most present father in the early days of vomit and diapers— but he’d be there all the same.

Cuddling. He loves to touch and be touched. He doesn’t care if you play games with him, he doesn’t care if you kill and destroy— all he cares about is the fact that you’re there with him.

He loves when you run your fingers through his tangled hair, slowly separating any knots you find. He loves the feel of his hands rubbing against your soft skin. He craves your presence and he craved the feel of you.

It’s not always sexual— but those times when he can claim you, to mark you inside and out, he truly feels like he’s the most powerful man in the world.

He’s terrified of feeling vulnerable, so he pushes you away any chance he gets, refusing to do anything with you if there’s even a chance of someone else seeing. (And sometimes that person is you)

Here’s some chat guidelines for Per’s lives based on things he’s shared in all of them:

Per doesn’t refer to himself as Sodomizer. I’ve seen his friends still call him Sodo and he’s responded to Sodo. However, he doesn’t like his Sodomizer tattoo and he has stated that he doesn’t want people to refer to him as Sodomizer. It was done as a joke in reference to a friend’s band. It doesn’t represent him and he would like to get his tattoo covered up.

He’s not going to talk about his involvement in Ghost. He never talks about his involvement in Ghost. If he talks about Ghost at all, it’s in reference to seeing them live (in the past) or being invited to see the movie. Otherwise, he doesn’t talk about Ghost unprompted and he doesn’t talk about his relationship with Tobias Forge.

Some things are for fans/fandom only. He doesn’t need to know about fanfiction. He doesn’t need to know about ships / shipping. It doesn’t matter what he thinks about fictional names for the fictional ghouls in the fictional ministry fans created for Ghost. He’s not a part of that. That’s for fandom use only. Please separate Ghost fiction from reality.

He’s been getting very frustrated over discussions of his height and his hair. He’s not going to let his hair down because he doesn’t like his hair. He’s already answered questions about his height (He’s ~5’8”) multiple times. He doesn’t understand why people are obsessed with his height or his hair. (IMO, it’s okay to love those things about him. He just doesn’t necessarily want to talk about those things.)

Whether we like it or not, he’s not going to talk about political issues at all. He’s not comfortable talking about political issues, and he expressed that he would much rather people who want to make a political change to just do it rather than yell at him about it. He doesn’t condone the “horrible things” happening in the world, but he’s closed off from politics for whatever reason.

Stop asking about his sexuality. He’s said he’s straight multiple times now. He’s not dating his coworkers. Stop asking him what he thinks about LGBTQ+ people. He has repeatedly said he’s supportive of LGBTQ+ people. His opinion is that people should be able to be and do what they want as long as it doesn’t harm anyone else.

Be careful about heavy topics. (e.g. Someone asked him what he thinks of hate crimes.) You don’t know what topics could be uncomfortable or even triggering to someone, and it’s really not a great idea to bring in heavy topics to a livestream when a safe space for them hasn’t been established. That can not only be stressful for him, but for other people in the chat.

Edit:

There are a few fans who try to joke around with him by saying they're his girlfriend or wife or that they're married. Recently, someone told him in the live that they made a Character AI of him that was dating or married to them. This is very very serious parasocial behavior. We cannot normalize it in our fandom spaces. Do not encourage it. Report these accounts when you see them.

I’m sharing this not to be overbearing and annoying, but rather because the same things come up in every livestream and some fans are simply not aware of them. A lot of these things revolve around personal boundaries. Just remember that you’re talking to a real person and not the fictional ghoul fans have created for his stage persona in Ghost.

I feel like these are reasonable boundaries for a livestream that we can all respect. I’ve left out other topics that he doesn’t really care about or that he’s already answered because they’re not really harmful. (Yes, it can be irritating to see the same questions over and over but they don’t involve ignoring his boundaries).

Finally, if you’re going to watch his livestreams specifically to go attack him or his girlfriend with insults on Twitter or TikTok or any other form of social media then you need to figure out something else to do with your time. You are way too invested in someone you obviously don’t like. You are making yourself and everyone else miserable.

You don’t have to like him. You can criticize him for something he said or did that upset you. That doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to transgress his boundaries. That doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to make misogynistic comments against his girlfriend. That doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to wish harm on him. That is obsessive, “anti” parasocial behavior. It needs to stop.

✦ sometimes it pains me to see so many folks avoiding ivorycest like the plague, because, like ranfren itself, it's so unapologetically insane that you can't really hate it. even if you try. if you have a dash of sense of humor, you'll see it's hilariously canon compliant!

i've seen lots of people argue that "anything romantic/sexual between randal and luther would be inherently out of character", which i'll admit is a reasonable concern, but it's just not true. the issue is characterization: people keep projecting human-based tropes and behavior on cryptids, and that's where the knee-jerk "eugh" reaction comes from. because yeah, randal and luther aren't going to declare their Forbidden Love for each other and then passionately kiss under the moonlit sky, nor are they going to feel guilty about their attraction and part ways with a tearful "we can't! this is wrong!". it would be completely unnatural behavior for them. all that? made for humans. and pretty basic humans, at that. for ivorycest to work, both in and out of canon, you gotta fully embrace the weirdness, see beyond humanity and forget all old expectations you might've gotten from any other couple of siblings!

from my point of view, it doesn't even feel like it fits with the rest of the "-cest"s. and not because of the possibility that randal and luther aren't even biologically related (i seriously doubt they're even from the same species) - we all know that adoptive siblings aren't any less siblings just because they don't share DNA. plus, pseudo-incest is still a thing - but because they're so, so far from human nature and from other brother/brother ships that it's almost laughable, and sometimes genuinely puzzling, to apply ANY human labels to them at all. for example, would you call luther a cannibal because he eats people? no. because it'd be like calling a human cannibal for eating cows, and that makes no sense. words mean things.

to us, at least.

coincidentally, that's half of my point.

the ivorys adress each other as "brother", sure, but you cannot look me in the eyes and tell me that they fully understand what that means or that they care about it enough to follow the moral/ethical guidelines attached to such terms. you simply cannot. most times it feels less like they see each other as family and more like they're just...roleplaying.

but if you decide to call someone "daddy", just when does that make them your father?

randal, who could (but perhaps shouldn't) be considered the most resourceful of the two, uses "brother" as both title and honorific - like one uses "sir" or "ma'am" - but doesn't seem to be overtly attached to the familial aspect of it. again, he's not a human, and, as far as we know, our siblinghood doesn't come naturally to him - much like pain, guilt, conscience and a whole load of bodily functions that he also seems to lack. luther, on the other same hand, understands the caretaking implications of being the "older brother", but that's pretty much where his brotherly-ness begins and ends. if anything, he's incorrectly using the sibling label while playing parent; just without any trauma and/or responsibility attached to it. there's also the fact that he's the most powerful entity in the household and randal - no matter how many pianos he "possesses" or how many times he shoves himself in the space between the wall and the fridge - cannot possibly overpower him, also adds to this parent/kid dynamic; hence granting luther the (almost-meaningless) title of "master" and the authority over their dysfunctional home. that still doesn't mean randal perceives him as anything but a housemate, or playdate, for he doesn't really seem to keep up the role of mischievous little brother unless he's bored (often, not always).

so they use the word, but it lacks permanent meaning. in that sense, classic incest tropes - no matter if brocon or dadson flavored - don't really work. there's power imbalance, sure, but the familial bonds needed to reinforce that imbalance simply do not exist. randal is babied because he likes to be. he likes being taken care of and likes having rules to break. it's a character he plays. luther "takes care" of him because he himself likes doing it. he likes being a parent and likes having a reason to lecture & discipline. it's a character he plays. they don't actually need this dynamic to thrive, and it wasn't imposed on them by parents/caretakers or any set of misfortunes that we know of. they just deliberately chose to partake on it.

consequently, i don't think they feel what humans perceive as familial love (healthy or unhealthy) for each other. they're simply two powerful entities - whom we can assume have been at least friends for a long time - playing make-believe. creatures who have little to no regard for humanity as a species, and are only interested in their own antics. of course they do eventually commend certain humans for their achievements, and seem to find all sorts of comfort in our art/creations/traditions, but outside of that? they see humans as fragile beings as intelectually insignificant to them as most animals are to us. randal forcibly keeps one as a pet. not far from "master" luther, who keeps two.

again, the ivorys are clearly intelligent, specially regarding their own survival. they're not behind being purposefully dense when it comes to anything human that is even slightly inconvenient to them (huh? eating the delivery man's arm when we order pizza is bad? haha, i would never have guessed!). they have the means and understanding necessary to behave (and perhaps look) 100% human, they just...choose not to. they can bend reality itself to their whims, turn themselves and others into inconceivable creatures, all while feigning absolute normalcy at the chaotic world around them (werewoofs, carpet cats with human faces, alive walls and furniture...), and you think they'd draw the line at willingly distorting something as frivolous as family hierarchy?

with that said, by the rules of their own game, if they were to partake in any...non-platonic activities, it would only be considered incestuous because they decided it would be - by creating the dynamic and environment in the first place. and they would simply not fucking care if it is upsetting, distasteful or imoral by human standards. and that's the ship's whole flavor - that's why i love it so much! precisely because there's no such thing as the "oh, no! i accidentally fell in love with my sibling! woe is me!" (which i also love) with the ivorys. there's also not a "normal" way to ship them, even if you're adamant about them not being related or not seeing each other as family, because they're two fucking weirdos.

their whole relationship is so tastefully bonkers that i genuinely wouldn't be fazed if they spawned another creature to be their "littlest" sibling. honestly, who could stop them? and who's to say that, in their cryptic way, they're not a married couple? or buddies into weird roleplay? ultimately, it is undeniable that they - in at least one sense of the word - love each other enough to enable each other; and to indulge on each other's silly/straight-up-criminal fantasies.

to me, there's no (human) romance, nor seduction, involved. randal knows he'll get nothing by jumping on his brother's lap and performing the most disgustingly horny hentai rip-off scenario ever. much like he'll get nothing in exchange for sweet words, flowers and chocolate. it's part of the game. he knows he'll receive only a "<3" (♥︎) - which him and luther seem to be able to pronounce out loud - or a hummed, blank-faced lecture about needing either a nap or to drink more water. if luther is having a bad day, he might even receive some sort of punishment. and those are the reactions randal wants, the normalcy (if you can call it that) he counts on. if he wanted a different response, something genuinely human, he'd have forcibly gauged it off sebastian, nyon or even nyen. likewise, luther knows better than to come too close or to grab randal by the waist, lest he get bitten or not-so-playfully snipped with scissors.

but there's intimacy. so much intimacy. on waking up to the other's figure looming over them, on physically crawling under each other's skin, on wrapping hands and claws around each other's organs and muscles and bones, on faux eyes staring into faux eyes, on a eerie smile pressed against unmoving lips, on the suspension of disbelief, on the lingering smell of copper, on the flashing lights and sappy endearments and and-

and, i suppose, on the sex too. i don't think i can picture them having human sex - really, who am i to guess what these creatures are packing in their pants? for all we know, they might as well be ken-doll smooth down there - but if they were to ever consummate their relationship sexually, i feel like it would probably be as uncomfortable, off-putting, disturbing and offensive to the eyes as everything else they do. genuinely revolting from any possible point of view - unless you're a true monsterfucker. a ritual so gross that, for us, it resembles nothing but a cacophony of unthinkable horrors molding together wetly, but that, to them, feels nothing but heavenly from beginning to end. as close to divinity as such wretched demons/creatures are ever going to get.

the conclusion is that...me shipping these two isn't even about wishing they'd get together, because, in their fucked up way, they already are. it isn't about spiting other fans either. it's about having fun coming up with increasingly nonsensical scenarios hoping to come close to their freak ✦

If you try to analyze the way characters are coded to be scary or creepy or "inhuman" it's 99% of the time just them being disabled or neurodivergent or some other marginalized identity.

the fascist undertones of the series are incredibly evident, from the stranger-danger propaganda being given at face value with no commentary on how fucked up it is to just say it's reasonable for you to shoot someone you think is an alternate/looks weird (are white people not aware of all the poc and disabled people who get shot and attacked cuz their existence is seen as threatening?)

the public announcement shit is literally fear mongering except it's in universe proven to be correct because the universe alex has created is an inherently fascist one where innocent white Christians and their innocent white children are under attack from Real Demons (where have i heard that one before)

the THINK principles are akin to a cults guideline. how is the scary thing here that there are weird looking people out there that will Say Scary Shit to you (the idea of an Unknowable Truth as it's alluded to in tmc is bullshit and one of the dumbest Monster powers I've ever heard of) instead of the fact that society is gonna collapse because this shit will make people paranoid as hell, and start shooting their neighbors. But no, that would make it a GOOD series with something INTERESTING to say.

OH and the fact that the enemies in the series are somehow supposed to Look Just Like You (they could be anyone!!) but also look biologically impossible (so many of the alternates + The intruder just look like disabled or disfigured people put through a scary filter)

like, he clearly doesn't mind the inclusion of romances. Adam had a girlfriend. what he says he minds is "sexualization" which just so happens to include every instance of two male characters looking at each other or holding hands (because being gay is inherently sexual to him, which is homophobic btw. not a "boundary")

i could write essays about how every little single aspect of this series is, thematically speaking, dogshit garbage which appeals to the majority and barely admits the rest of us exist (which i wouldnt even care about so much if people didn't act like this series was at all unique or subversive)

I've talked for fucking hours about how every time i think it can't get any worse it somehow does. i've barely touched on the ableism here, haven't even mentioned the racism OR how all the female characters are defined by their relations to the male characters.

Whatever makes you feel comfortable!

The Villain Recruiters with Children

Apple Poison 🍎

Before his inevitable character development, Apple kept his distance from children whilst on the job.

He didn't hate children, but his aloof nature definitely gave an ominous vibe towards guests. Though his politeness and bluntness were, somehow, what drove kids to Apple.

As his icy exterior melts away, Apple begins to indulge in the children's games, silly requests, or just them asking for company.

This was made possible thanks to his crazy, vibrant coworkers who became a family. Especially Pretty Scar, who, in all her annoyance, helped train Apple to adjust to children's behavior. He's dealt with the hyena girl's shenanigans on a regular basis, dealing with normal children is a cakewalk compared to her.

Jack Heart ❤️

Oh, Jack loves these little buggers!

Entertaining the kids during the stage shows is the highlight of his day. The laughter, the cheers, the excitement! It practically fuels him with joy and the strength to keep performing.

Jack adores children! He'll play tricks and pranks to make them laugh. He doesn't mind babies either! If they start crying, he'll make goofy faces or dance to help them smile again.

Just a warning, though, chaos always follows Jack wherever he goes, being from Wonderland and all, so if he somehow ends up babysitting, know that your house will end up burning down.

Malfi (Malfie) 🪞

Malfi's not super into kids, but he enjoys their company more than Apple.

He's more than willing to show himself in all of his handsome glory off anytime for them, but he's not used to all of affection they tend to give him. They ruin his hair!

He does have a soft spot for them, though. They may ruffle his feathers from time to time, but he can't bring himself to dislike them at all.

Malfi had a difficult childhood, on account of his parents following nature's guidelines in throwing him out of the nest because they deemed him as "weak." He never had anyone to look up to, other than Maleficent, and his days before her were quite lonely.

Beauty and childhood innocence are sacred to Malfi, so if he can brighten up a kids' day with his gorgeous self, whatever happens is worth it.

Eight Foot Joe 🐙

Joe's not the biggest fan of kids, nor does he have the energy to deal with them.

Before he became more socialible, he would do everything he possibly could to get away from the kids.

If someone, particularly a little girl, is wearing an Ariel costume, Joe will scream at them to try and get them to go away. It's not the kid's fault, he just has trauma surrounding the royal family and Ursula back at home.

Eventually, Joe will realize that making a decent impression on the public is part of his job, so he'll get used to it. Again, he's very socially awkward, so interacting with anyone, let alone children, will take some getting used to.

That "I have no idea what to do" phase will fade soon enough. He'll accept children in a very "tired uncle" way.

Mr. Dalmatia 🐾

Dalma is surprisingly good with kids despite his slight prissiness.

Dalmatians themselves are a very energetic and active breed, so most kids enjoy having the dog recruiter around.

He may get scolded for running around like a dog in his human form, but no one can or really cares to stop him. By playing with the kids, he's technically still doing his job, so why bother?

On some days he will be more irritated than usual, like if the babies are too loud, his coat gets ruined, or is just having an off day, but other than that, bring them over!

Pretty Scar (Mzuri) ✨️

Children are adorable, and so is Mzuri, so of course, she loves kids to pieces!

Being a hyena and all, she's used to interacting with dozens of kids at the same time. Playtime is funtime, so long as her hair, dress, or makeup don't get ruined.

While her colleagues might find her obnoxious, she finds solace in the fact that the kids like her, so that's more than enough!

Ms. Hades 🔥

As the designated mom of the group, Ms. Hades is quite the expert at dealing with children responsibly.

She may not understand everything, given that she's spent all of her immortal life in the Underworld and heard all kinds of stories about betrayal, family murder, and massive family drama from Olympus, but upon realizing that their world is massively different than hers, she understands soon enough.

Sometimes, she'll spot children and their parents having fun and doing family things, and eventually, she gets a better understanding of human life and culture.

She becomes more friendly and hospitable towards the kids, and while she's still fairly strict with rough housing, she won't get too heated over it.

Veil 🔔

Veil was once incredibly uncomfortable towards children while she was still in France. Her childhood was full of abuse and neglect, and she found refuge in the church with the infamous Claude Frollo. All of this put together made her socially inept outside of her normal duties.

Despite that, however, working with the recruiters and talking to staff and customers has improved her social skills. She's even found that children are far easier to talk to once she grew to understand them.

Her singing voice often puts fussy babies or rambunctious youngsters to sleep, much to the parent's delight. The praise she earns for it sends her over the moon with joy.

Lady Hock (Hook) 🪝

Ah, the suave and adventurous pirate lady! A lover of the seas and of boisterous little tykes!

Similarly to Malfi, Hock wishes to protect the innocence and wonder of children. As such, she will grant the desires of any child who asks of her, whether their requests be sword fighting on the roof or singing sea shanties on stage.

Faja (Farja) 🌹

As much as Faja likes kids and their enjoyment of her magic tricks, she's still the hothead of the group. Patience is most definitely not her virtue.

Babies crying can get on her nerves real fast, and she doesn't have Ms. Hades' calm and collected nature, or Jack's funnyman persona, to help her out. But since she's around kids a lot (again, this is Disneyland), she gets more used to it. It still annoys her, though.

Faja will make the kids laugh, unintentionally, when her spells backfire, and she'll either be furious with them seemingly making fun of her for it, or she'll droop down like her flower in defeat.

But! If the spell, by some miracle, actually works and the kids applaud or demand an encore, Faja will be more than happy to oblige.

She may be more of a"spunky aunt" type than a "mom" type, but that doesn't mean she won't get all sappy when the kids say that they love or that she's their favorite out of all the recruiters. She'll just start bawling.

Why I think Nine Inch Nails Belongs On Every Error Playlist.

NIN might be my favorite band right now, so I'm listening to it constantly. I've connected the lyrics and sounds to Error and I'm going to explain why. I'm breaking up things into little groups to make things easier.

group 1) Error's stubbornness and anger group 2) his lonely :( group 3) his chaotic nature and weird self-contradictory behavior

If I designed music for Error I'd have a sturdy bassline to rep how unchanging his opinion is, and the playing instruments an electronic mess of thoughts and feelings for his shitty cycle of a mental state. NIN perfectly captures how I envision it soundwise.

Song: Only

The beat and the guitar 100%.

"I've becoming less defined, as days go on by, fading away well you could say I'm losing focus." This is the point where Error starts to feel the effects of real lonesomeness, like with Into The Void, which is just him waking up and realizing his situation, Only is a continuation of it.

"Less concerned with fitting into the world, your world that is." The Stubbornness.

"I just made you up to hurt myself." Error finding a way to cope with the crippling Nothing and lack of company by saying that the only real reason that he felt it to begin with was because he wanted to punish himself for something. And instead he finds more reasons to love things about the Anti-Void than hate it out of spite. Group 1 and 2.

"There is no you, there is only me." Him separating himself from other characters as something entirely different, he feels like he's nothing like them, and that aids in his incredible apathy towards other people, especially those with AUs.

Song: Into The Void

The start of the song adds onto itself bit by bit as it progresses, starting with a simple tune and then adding another intrument, a baseline, and zangy electronic shit. Kind of like waking up.

"Try to save myself, but myself keeps slipping away." The vastness of the void traumatizes everyone, just an empty white that goes on endlessly. I like to think this song could be used to depict Error's feelings about his home, how existentially scary it is and how it effects him.

The rolling tune, where near the three minute mark it swings up and then falls back down again in a sort of out-of-sync and deteriorating way, like a buildup to a strong emotion (anger, stress) and then switching to relief or calmness once it passes, he's dealing with the pressure of his own thoughts. This puts the song in group 2.

Song: GOSSIP (Maneskin)

WIth the hard+heavy beat with the wacky guitar, the sound of the song fits with the theme already.

"So sip the gossip, drink 'til you choke. […] you're not iconic, you are just like them all." Directed at Ink and their disagreements.

"Keep drinking and acting cool […] nobody likes a gloomy face." in reference to how Ink has control over his emotions and yet chooses not to agree with Error.

I think this song could be used to depict Error and Ink's relationship from Error's POV and show why they disagree with different reasons other than, "that one destroys that one protects, obviously they argue about that and only that." Error probably sees Ink defending AUs as not worth the time and energy, something that other people have conditioned him to do or something he thinks is a 'normal guideline' to follow. the irony is that while Error critisizes Ink about letting other people define who he is (even though Ink's actions are actually entirely his own) he himself locks himself up in a box of, "I'm the bad guy, I'm the destroyer. That's my purpose because I've heard it told to me so many times."

But not FGod territory, Error believes wholly in his goal, but embodies it instead of it just being a thing he has faith in. This song goes into group 1.

Song: Squares (That Handsome Devil)

Very nifty 1900's vibe is always welcome. "To refuse would be square. And that terrible label must be avoided at all costs." to add on to what shapes I use to draw Error with. Nobody wants to be Error, he's a square! He probably doesn't drink or do any other mysterious 'get high' activities now that I think about it. This song is once again about Ink and Error's dispute.

"Stupid bastards blasting telling me what's cool." he hates being told what to do, probably has some form of authority problem.

"Sorry girl, you're far behind where it is you draw your line." Error draws the line at Outertale because he's biased, and can't understand why Ink keeps going and accepting new variations. This song goes into group 1.

Song: Destruction (Joywave)

The beginning: "will the soundtrack please produce a sound? (chaos noise) go on, […] any sound! (another chaos noise) well, that's not quite what I had in mind." Error's a little shit and does the exact opposite of anything out of spite (for shits and giggles)

"Oh my God, I'm a giant with an appetite." I relate Error to a black hole, since he eats up AUs like one does to stars.

"Oh my God, there's nobody who can set me right. I've been sent to torch the palace down in broad daylight" he knows everyone thinks he's wrong, and he knows nothing can be done about it. And also the second line "I've been sent" to lose that sense of self and rely on a higher purpose.

"I've been creeping round I saw a little thing I didn't like You tried to hide I've been creeping round I saw a little thing I didn't like You tried to hide from me."

The song also has a very BIG vibe to it, like going somewhere. Walking up to a thing or person with an intent. I think this song could be used to flesh out how much JOY he gets from causing anarchy and destroying things. It gives him a sense of power, makes him feel free and in control, a very sought for feeling we all seek. Group 3.

I more of related the AUs to the TV shows in the song, it follows their everyday life, "Hot lights on your love life. Let me buy. Close up tabloid shots of your cellulite." I feel like that last line is more sarcasm towards it, "like sure! I'm totally all for your bullshit!"

"You're getting so obsessed its all we talk about." Again, could be used as a reference to Ink.

"Hypnotizing pages of advice From their demented fashion do's or dies." Hypnotizing like Error believes everyone else is being tricked into liking absolute garbage, and if you DON'T like it, you're a bitch!

"I won't ask a question, I'll state the truth It's everything I know and all I do."

The entire thing is very nihilistic, someone who's downright exhausted from things they feel like need to change but aren't being listened to.

"They're gunna blind date everyone until you love them too." adds onto what I said for Get Seduced, poor Error's the only one who has a brain huh? (What an asshole, really.)

"This is the answer to the question. This is the sound of the truth. This is the answer to the question. There is nothing you can do." He's near unstoppable and unchangeable.

"Digital style, digital hate. Digital god, digital pain. Digital violence, digital world. Digital boy meets digital girl. Digital silence, digital yell. Digital heaven, digital hell. Digital start, digital end. Digital birth, digital death." obviously, being digital makes it so there's a barrier between you and whatever you try to interact with. In reality whatever you do online is ultimately fabricated. Error's a glitch! A digital aspect that can't hurt you outside of the screen, and he's put up barriers and walls around himself and excludes everyone else as "not real", flipping the "nothing online is real" to make himself feel better.

YOU are digital. Not Error. It can't possibly be Error because that's reportedly not what he believes. Group 1 and 2.

I saw the "Are you satisfied?" on the album cover and got reminded of The Origins. Hiii Crunch!

The first half is Error asking what's gunna happen when people get bored of making AUs, all that energy will be completely wasted, what then? Would there be any point in continuing to stray from the original source if the end goal just fizzles out meaninglessly?

"Oh, what is it your justice, cut the hands of the thief? He was starving, his children were crying to be fed. And now they're bawling and dying. But at least you are ahead." getting left behind or entirely forgotten about, that's unfair, Error uses the excuse that nobody would want him to begin with because of what he does, and that's why he deserves to be as unreasonable as he is.

"You keep it, we don't want it." nobody wants trash cluttering up their multiverse! Just get rid of it! He says.

"Just be patient, keep waiting. That's what they always say. But you're tired and you're aching. And the pain won't go away." and his reaction to coping with that pain is to lash out at what he thinks is the cause.

Song: Head Like A Haunted House (Queens Of The Stone Age)

"Desperation can led to madness." Fun line that could be used as an art piece title for him lmao.

"Let you mock and then copulate me. A dirty trick and it's making me sick." explanatory with what I've already established.

"Tonight I'm gonna put up a fight, I'm gonna get a reaction that I'm right. [...] To trick them all because of which is why I'm ashamed. Petty disguises more like skins, a distinction, vice." he feels that everybody's just out to get him, and he feels the need to defend himself. Group 1 and maybe 2.

Again, these lines more or less can speak for themselves.

"Will you bite the hand that feeds you?" Error acting out against the Creators even though they're the ones that spawned him in. Kind of like a rebellious teenager.

"What if this whole crusade's a charade. And behind it all there's a price to be paid. For the blood on which we dine. Justified in the name of the holy and the divine." all the bullshittery of the multiverse and Ink's goal to preserve and spread it (a crusade) holds a horrible end for them all. Maybe things go up in one big explosion GIF and letting all the AUs run free ruins the structure of reality in the long run. Ink's justified in the eyes of the Creators because he upholds their desires.

"So naïve, I keep holding on to what I wanna believe, I can see. But I keep holding on and on and on and on." yeah this puts it in group 1 for sure. Stubborn.

Song: Jealous (Eyedress)

veering away from his outwardly asshole behavior. I don't see Error having great thoughts about himself. Maybe he appears confident and sure of his opinions as a way to cover up that he genuinely doesn't know how to communicate or get help in any way. So he pushes on that higher purpose excuse to avoid possibly getting hurt if he ever does try to reach out.

And if someone tries to get close to him he shoves them away all like.

"You could have anyone you want. Why would you want to be with me? You know, I'm nothing special." everyone already thinks he's a jackass, so why would anyone wanna approach him kindly?

"She tried to call me yesterday. But I didn't pick up. 'Cause I don't got time." he don't got time to get hurt and cry about it, not risking it. :(

finalizing lines to prove my point, "Only care about myself. 'Cause everyone's trying to hurt me. Just leave me alone. Just leave me alone."

Did Ray Bradbury Hate Mushrooms or Something?

Back in 1989, there aired an episode of Ray Bradbury Theater based, as they all were, on a short story by Ray Bradbury, called: "Boys! Raise Giant Mushrooms in your Cellar!" and it was a hoot. I'm not watching it again right now, so I'm just going off my memory from like three years ago. The plot follows a boy growing giant mushrooms...in his cellar. Mostly, his skeptical dad is uncomfortable with his son's increasingly creepy, often erratic behavior, and I dunno — the ending is very Ray Bradbury.

My point in all this is that there is a weirdness applied to the hobby of mycology, and it casts it in a light of, "Perhaps these mushrooms are a mind-controlling organism!" Now that I think of it, probably Ray Bradbury was not particularly unfond of mushrooms, or mushroom growing, and was in fact just weirded out by the fanatical fervor sometimes displayed by new hobbyists. The "cage-stage" of settling into a hobby, if you will.

I think that's something a lot of us can relate to; people with different interests to us tend to exhibit traits and behaviors we can't quantify or qualify, and sometimes that can be jarring. It's in seemingly every kids' show, probably in a lot of adult shows, too, and we always wind up rolling our eyes once we've seen enough episodes with the exact same plotline of, "Main character happy. New character different. Main character scared. New character cool. Main character happy."

I'm sure it's a very valuable lesson, but it reminds me uncomfortably of Mandatory Work Training. When I was in orientation at Wabash National, they had a video called Remember Charlie to instill a great sense of responsibility and safety into us all. The guy teaching the orientation curriculum made sure to let us know we would be fired on the spot if anyone started nodding off in the dim-lit room while we watched the hour-long video. He even hung out in the front and shone a flashlight on our faces to check if anyone was sleeping.

The thing I've learned about safety in the workplace, is that it isn't about the millions businesses pay every year on crappy safety videos for insurance purposes. It isn't about the amount of times your supervisor tries to let you know he's on your side — he couldn't care less if you used a noose around your neck as a harness when you're up on the ladder — and then boredly recites company policy. It all comes down to the fact that when they say it's your responsibility to be safe, they mean they have washed their hands of the whole affair; they showed you the video on how to do it right, and even if they never taught you to do it in a practical sense, they can blame you if they can prove you didn't follow the guidelines.

And then they'll put out a memo letting everyone know that donut breaks are effectively gone forever because someone almost stepped on a sprinkle and sprained their ankle. No, seriously. Someone at my workplace was walking, and saw a forklift, and was startled, so they wrote up a memo with new company policy stating that you aren't allowed to park Powered Industrial Vehicles at that corner anymore.

We have a memo up right now that we aren't supposed to have coffee makers or any other electric device in the room I work in all night. I used to have a coffee maker I would use from time to time because I didn't want to inconvenience my coworkers. My job requires someone be in this room at all times, so if I need to heat something up in the microwave, I have to make sure someone else is in here before leaving.

Now I can hear you saying that it probably could cause a short, or maybe I could start a fire accidentally, or it's just some kind of safety issue, but look me in the eye:

There is absolutely no reason for this memo. There is nothing to suggest that an electrical device (such as a coffee machine) set up in the laziest fashion, with hardly any safety precautions taken at all (except putting it upright, with enough water in the tank to do its job) would be any kind of issue. You would have to be a literal saboteur to create a safety concern of this sort.

LAPTOPS. Laptops are banned in here, based on the same memo. I know that's a security concern, but you know what kind of concern it isn't? Safety. You know what kind of a concern a coffee pot isn't? Security.

Anyway. That's pretty much all I have to say about that today. Toodles.

Why Loki’s Sylvie Is A Mary Sue

So I am firmly in the camp that Sylvie on the Loki series was/is a Mary Sue.  The last episode made me feel better and like maybe the show was doing a thing where they were faking you out that she was a Mary Sue only to show she was actually sort of a bad guy and I liked that.  But all the recent interviews make me think the show wants to go back to her being a Mary Sue.

But I feel like when I call her out for being a Mary Sue people tell me what are you talking about, she’s not a Mary Sue, bad things happen to her, etc.  But that doesn’t actually make her not a Mary Sue.  

Also, before we start, I know some people find Mary Sue sexist.  But I personally use the term for guys and girls. I don’t use the term to belittle women.  I use the term to criticize a poorly written character.

And I know Mary Sue is often used to describe fanfic characters.  But to me, this series is kind of like a fanfic because the writers took a character who had been in canon MCU material for ten years and then created characters around that character.  So, I kind of review it like I would a fanfic.  It’s very different than if the writers had created a brand new show with all of their own new characters.

Anyway, if you are not totally familiar with the Mary Sue term, then check this out:

I know the term Mary Sue probably means different things to different people.  But I have always used these guidelines when I write my own fanfic to make sure my characters never come off as a Mary Sue.

This article really gives you a full scale of what a Mary Sue is.  If you start reading it, you’ll immediately see why Sylvie is.  But I’m going to take out the parts that most fit Sylvie just to highlight why I believe she is a Mary Sue.  I apologize for this being so long.

Mary Sue Character Traits

Personality

Erm... what personality? The typical Mary Sue doesn't have one per se, because she isn't meant to be a character; rather, she's an entity by which the author makes cool stuff happen.

I feel like that is Sylvie in a nutshell.  She doesn’t have a personality.  I feel like even though she ate screentime, I still don’t really know her at all.  The writers love to say she’s badass.  That’s not a personality.  

Sometimes when I am writing stories for fun and creating new characters, I like to take surveys as my fictional characters.  Like the kind of surveys you’d see in a magazine, like personality types, what’s your dating style, etc.  I figure if I don’t know what my character would do in any of those situations, then I need to keep working on my character.  And if I was trying to fill out a survey pretending I was Sylvie I would have no idea what to answer because she doesn’t have a personality.  She’s just “cool”.

What little personality a Mary Sue has isn't as important as how other characters react to it. No matter how shy or socially awkward Mary Sue is supposed to be, other characters will be inexplicably drawn to her

This is so Sylvie.  Loki falls in love with her...why, exactly?  He falls in love with her in the big Nexus event moment...why?  Because she had a tough childhood?  Mobius spends like two seconds with her in a car and goes from hating her to saying she’s his favorite Loki.  For. No. Particular. Reason.

She's extremely persuasive; everyone finds her opinions to be better than their own

She enchants Hunter B-15 and then immediately Hunter B-15 makes it her whole entire life mission to back Sylvie up.  

And occasionally she'll be a complete asshole...This can manifest itself in several ways...The author wants to write a badass but doesn't know how. This leads to a character who mistreats everyone around her and is never called out on her abrasive, casually abusive behavior.

Sylvie talked down to Loki and treated him like garbage for all of episode three, but it was never portrayed as a bad thing and we never got any impression Sylvie later felt bad for the way she treated Loki

The author doesn't know how to hold back the character, meaning that she will succeed at practically everything. This means that when she encounters rules or authority figures who would otherwise prevent her from doing what she wants to do, she rolls right through them (and they praise her for her "boldness" in defying regulations). If a bad guy is violent and aggressive, she can beat him by being more violent and aggressive (with all that entails). It's impossible for her to go overboard because she's protected by Protagonist-Centered Morality.

Sylvie is shown as a kid to immediately be able to grab a Tempad and run away.  And she can kick ass way better than Loki, for no known reason.  She is always able to fight back against the TVA when they attack her.  And she can kill lots of innocent TVA agents but it’s okay because TVA bad, Sylvie good.

Skills

She will always be superior to the canon characters, regardless of what canon has established they can do or whether it makes any sense.

Whose skill was needed to defeat Alioth?  Sylvie’s.  Of course.  Sylvie needed to teach Loki her skills in order for him to succeed (!).  And again, she is literally called the superior Loki.

Relatedly, there's no effort to her skills. She never actually trains or learns anything to become more powerful; she just wins the Super Power Lottery, or is a freakish natural learner, or is just Inexplicably Awesome

We’re told Sylvie literally taught herself magic.  She literally taught herself to enchant people.  That. Makes. No. Sense.  Like, I have so many questions.  Like, why would it even occur to her to teach herself that?  And how????????????  This is really lazy writing.

Canon Character Relationships

Mary Sue is often designed to hook up with another character, often as a form of Wish Fulfillment. This isn't that bad in and of itself (okay, it is kinda weird), but Mary Sue accomplishes this without any sense of realism. She just grabs her lover's attention straight away, and their relationship will never face any obstacles or tension; it's true love from the start and nothing else. The biggest giveaway is if the love interest is explicitly the author's favorite character, and she essentially "cures" him of all the angst that ails him (at the expense of his characterization).

Yeah, so...this one should be pretty obvious to anyone who watched the show.  Loki literally falls in love with Sylvie immediately, and then he suddenly turns from “villain” to “hero” just because of loving her.  And this was definitely at the expense of his characterization.  And Loki just knows he falls in love with her.  There’s not even any moments of hmm what do I feel for this person?  It’s just true love, immediately.

She will be related to a canon character in some way. This (marginally) helps explain such phenomena as her being a Copy Cat Sue and other characters accepting her so easily.

Sylvie is a Loki variant.  They use this to help explain why Loki is drawn to her and why their falling in love immediately “makes sense”.

Most characters give her more heed than they normally would. The good guys never stop praising her

Seriously, it was so over the top and OOC for Loki to gush over her.  He literally tells her she’s amazing.  They don’t even make it subtle.

Characters' previously established personalities change in reaction to her. Proud, arrogant gimps suddenly acknowledge her superiority in everything. Reckless youths will listen to all her advice. Responsible leaders will defer to her instead. Villains will obsess with her to the detriment of all else. Extremely competent characters will become stumbling buffoons who require her help to do anything. Sweet, mild-mannered characters whom the author doesn't like turn evil and insult her. They all become unnaturally focused on her in some way.

Again, Loki’s whole personality changed in reaction to her.  He became a buffoon who needed her help to enchant the Alioth because of course he couldn’t do anything without her!  Hunter B-15 goes from doing whatever the TVA said to fighting the TVA just because of Sylvie.

Story Elements

Mary Sue is without exception a single-person Spotlight-Stealing Squad. The entire story hinges on her existence; if you removed her, there would be no story. 

Sylvie undoubtedly drove the whole story this season.  It all became about HER meeting the TVA heads because of HER trauma.  Loki’s life was only saved at the beginning because the TVA was trying to capture HER.  And SHE was the one who started the whole multiverse (!).

Mary Sue is The Chosen One, even if the setting already has one. There are many ways she can accomplish this: she can be a Sailor Earth type who "shares" the position with the canon hero; she may be vaguely "destined to help the destined one fulfill their destiny" (i.e. do all the work except the final blow so that the prophecy is still technically correct); or the canon hero may be revealed to be a Fake Ultimate Hero all along. Being the Chosen One doesn't necessarily involve her being a God-Mode Sue, especially as authors become aware of the phenomenon and try to avoid it, but it does make her critically important to the world and allows her to continue stealing the spotlight without the "god mode" label.

HWR wanted Sylvie to come with Loki in the end, like she was chosen all along right alongside Loki.  Like one of the most important characters in the entire MCU is now this character who we only met a few episodes ago.

Most Sues have an unusually Dark and Troubled Past. It's often used to create a Sympathetic Sue, but any type of Sue can have one

They tell us, over and over, how hard Sylvie’s life was because she was kidnapped by the TVA in order to create sympathy for her.

She almost never does anything wrong. In the rare instance that she does, it's usually; (a) a way for the author to disclaim her being a Mary Sue by introducing a single imperfection (that has no bearing on anything anyway), and (b) designed to show her smarts by making her feel instant remorse, and she'll be Easily Forgiven anyway:

So this one hopefully will not come true, as a lot can change between now and when the show is taped. But if the show goes on the way the behind the scenes team is talking, Sylvie immediately felt remorse for betraying Loki, and Loki has already forgiven her and is desperately looking for her.  Ugh.

Alternatively, she is more than capable of doing something wrong, be it in general moral terms or something that goes against whatever code she abides by, and she maybe even frequently does so, but don't expect the other characters or the narrative to ever acknowledge or comment on it in any real capacity. If the other characters do call her out, expect them to be treated like they're the problem for daring to criticize her at all.

Mobius calls her out for killing people, but Sylvie immediately says he’s a bad person and then Mobius agrees, because, of course.

She will often suffer from Special Snowflake Syndrome; i.e., she has a trait or backstory that sets her apart from her group or race.

She is the only female Loki, thus making her the special one among all the Lokis in episode five.

Presentation

In visual media, the camera just can't stop staring at her.

The camera would follow her in fight scenes rather than Loki.

Mary Sue Tropes

Okay, so there are specific Mary Sue tropes that Sylvie is.  One of those is Copy Cat Sue, which I think was referenced before.

Copy Cat Sue

A lot of fanfic writers...start to write something because of their passion for this character, but they find something about the character that doesn't mesh well. Maybe they're the wrong gender or are otherwise not close enough to the author's expectations...In any case, rather than put them through the Possession Sue process, they just get a Clone-O-Matic™ and out pops a Copy Cat Sue...the character might be intended as a replacement for the canon character, but without whatever icky traits the author hates. They'll then rob the spotlight, prove the canon character to be unworthy of his/her position, and either relegate the character to obsolescence or, perhaps, even remove them entirely.

Sylvie is basically a clone of Loki, she is a variant.  But she absolutely robbed the spotlight of Loki’s, and they literally call her the superior Loki.  I mean, they are literally not even being subtle about this.  And there was a feeling by myself (and a lot of other viewers) that Sylvie might ultimately replace Loki in the MCU. 

Black Hole Sue

Much like a black hole, this is a Mary Sue who "sucks in" the plot and characters to her. Characters will behave outside their personalities, logic will be defied, and rules will be broken for her sake.

Sylvie really does suck up all the plot and Loki definitely behaves outside of his personality just to fit the Sylvie show.

Jerk Sue

A Mary Sue who is mean or maybe even cruel, but are still treated as an ideal person.

Once again, Sylvie is basically a jerk all of episode three, but you’ve got Loki falling over himself to call her amazing in just the next episode.

Relationship Sue

A Mary Sue who exists to be the perfect mate for a specific character...this character has everything in the plot conspiring to enforce this One True Pairing...in Fanfiction, they are the perfect beloved of a canon character.

They literally have Mobius speculate that Loki falling in love with Sylvie is so extraordinary that it causes an entire Nexus event, that’s how huge this One True Pairing is (!).  And Sylvie is the love interest of Loki, the only character who had been around before the beginning of the series

TLDR: Sylvie has all the tropes of a classic Mary Sue character.  So calling Sylvie a Mary Sue isn’t being sexist or just randomly hating on the character.  If you use common Mary Sue characteristics to examine the character, she just has too many of these characteristics to ignore.

What would you say is your characters' greatest strength and weakness and what would they say is their greatest strength and weakness?

Well I think they’re all little shits but that’s beside the point....

Hmm... let me think.

Aeleanor/Aeson: I think one of A’s greatest qualities is there ability to listen. They can be silent for hours if that’s something that another person needs which I think is really special. Especially when a person just really wants to vent. However, they are very pragmatic when it comes to a lot of things in their life. If something doesn’t follow a set guideline then they’ll usually ignore it. Which has caused them to miss out on a lot in life.

Elaria/Ezra: I think E has a gentle heart. They always put others before themselves even though it’s not in the most obvious ways. Which is something you want in a future leader. I do think E, because of this, shields themselves a bit more when it comes to outsiders... which isn’t a good thing at all. They need to learn to love themselves just as much as everyone else.

Catherine/Caleb: Loyalty. C is loyal to a fault. If you’re lucky enough to earn their trust then they’ll be one of the greatest confidants you could ever ask for. On the flip side, I think a big weakness with them is their willingness to give people more chances. Which has caused them to get hurt on multiple occasions. They need to learn that not everyone deserves a second chance.

Lydia/Luca: Their openness. L isn’t afraid of telling people what’s on their mind. Of course, they’re always aware of how someone else is feeling but when it comes down to it L will tell you straight up what they think of you. They’re blunt in a way that’s not meant to hurt anyone’s feelings but can. However, they do struggle with grudges. L can hold a grudge till the day they die if they wish to. It’s something that they need to work on.

Samara/Silas: Their humor. S has an energy around them that pulls people in. Makes them laugh and smile because S just exudes warmth and cheer. Their wit causing people to crack. However, S sometimes doesn’t know when enough is enough. Even if they don’t mean any harm by continuing.

Milena/Maven: Their intelligence. M is very intelligent and they’ll always use that to help the people closest to them. Whether it’s with a project that they’re working on or something more trivial. M will always be willing to lend a hand. On the flip side, however, they don’t have that many people they’re close with... if there’s any at all. They don’t open themselves up at all. Which doesn’t help their self confidence when people do try to talk to them and then slowly stop because of their lack of social aptitude... a cycle that needs to be broken.

Natalia/Nikolas: Their integrity. N believes in themselves a lot. They believe that what’s right is right and what’s wrong is wrong. They know that there’s a gray area but they also believe that it shouldn’t define everything. They’ll be honest with you when they believe you need honesty... even if it hurts. They rarely ever doubt themselves. However, N does have a problem with stubbornness. If they believe that something is right, even if it could be wrong, they’ll fight tooth and nail for it. Causing a lot of headaches along the way.

Lauren: Her kindness. Lauren has always prided herself on maintaining her humanity. With everything she’s seen and experienced she has never wanted to lose herself in the pain and suffering of her patients. Has always tried to be a beacon that they can look towards in their most dire times. However, Lauren puts too much of herself into her patients. She cares too much... and while that may not seem like a weakness it’s one of her biggest faults. Because she’ll take the blame for everything that went wrong. Even if there was no possible way that it was her fault.

Faolan: His strength. I’m not talking about the physical kind... even though he could probably bench press a tree... I’m talking about his mental strength. Faolan, no matter what, will always protect his pack. He will keep his focus on doing so even if he’s at his weakest. Because he knows that his pack needs him. That his family needs him. However, Faolan has trouble accepting that he needs help. He has trouble believing that he can’t do it all... I’m not sure if it’s necessarily because of his pride or because he’s ingrained it into himself that he has to be able to do it all.

Aidan: Protectiveness. Once you have gotten close with Aidan there is nothing he wouldn’t protect you from. That boy would step in front of a flaming arrow for you. He would defend you against even the largest of foes. He would always make sure that you were okay in the end. However, he wrestles a lot with his pride. Aidan isn’t one to just brush away a bruised ego. He’s been belittled a lot throughout his life and he won’t roll over when he feels like he’s being slighted... even if it’s not even in a malicious way.

Irithiel: Leadership. Irithiel is an amazing leader with a heart of gold. She would do anything for her Riders. Would do anything to make sure that they were safe and sound. That they would be able to return to their mates and families. That the people of Gallinia and Haven were safe and sound at the end of the day. However, her wraith is something that can be one of her greatest weaknesses. When Irithiel has been pushed too far nothing can stop the hellscape that follows.

Aeleanor/Aeson: “My skills in diplomacy, of course. I wouldn’t be where I am now if it that wasn’t my greatest asset. I’m not too sure about weaknesses though. I suppose I can be a little callous at times.”

Elaria/Ezra: “I’ve always tried to have the best outlook on things. Even when things look bleak I’ve tried to look at the silver lining. But when I don’t think there is one things can get pretty bleary. I’m an extreme in both cases.”

Catherine/Caleb: “I’d follow the people I love to death if that’s what they asked of me. I would do anything to make sure that they were okay, but I don’t always realize that they don’t feel the same. That, while I would gladly lay down my life for them, they would gladly step aside and let me.”

Lydia/Luca: “I’m a pretty good at socialization when the times calls for it. Even though I have a problem of getting easily bored when someone’s talking and making it known.”

Samara/Silas: “I just like making other people happy. There’s no greater joy to me then bringing other people it. Though I think I sometimes overdo a tad bit. Because people tend to get mad at me fairly easily.”

Milena/Maven: “My reconnaissance work. I’m one of the best infiltrators in Haven. It’s something I pride myself heavily on. I suppose some would see my antisocial behavior as a weakness but I’ve never really cared.”

Natalia/Nikolas: “I’ve always liked listening to people. Hearing their life stories and what makes them tick. I’ve always appreciated making other people feel heard. But, I admit, that I get far too curious for my own good and sometimes ask too many questions within the span of the story.”

Lauren: “My ability to do my job well. I have saved countless lives because of my knowledge. Lives that wouldn’t of had a chance otherwise. I just wish that I was able to know more for all the lives that were lost because of me.”

Faolan: “Leading my pack has never been an easy feat but I’ve always managed. I think that I could do a better job and I’m sometimes too lenient but we get by.”

Aidan: “I’d do anything for my family. For the ones that I love. That’s not something that has ever changed within me. But I do have a tendency to hate almost everyone on sight.”

Irithiel: “My patience. You don’t get to be where I am without being patient. Especially when you have to deal with the people that I do on a daily basis. Though I do wish I could be better at reigning in my temper when it’s been fully released. Especially when I turn it on people who don’t deserve my ire.”
