Breaks my heart how 3GS was created to be an adventurer. He's got the whole personality for it. A leader, he's explored space, and now he's locked himself away inside that closet for years.
Do you think he ever thinks about those siblings he failed and left behind, and thinks he too deserves to be left behind. That this is his punishment. His anxieties only confirmed by the fact every person whose found him has left him again.
Deep down he wants so desperately for someone to help him to tell him he can leave.
